Let me tell you about my white privilege.  I didn’t grow up in a white community. I grew up in a Cree community where I was almost always the only non-Cree child in my class. I was very privileged to be called “white-man” every day for years, the worst insult anyone could throw at you, on the same level as a swear word.  I can still hear the contempt in the other kids’ voices as they spat out that word. I was a CHILD. I did not know what my people; my government had done to their people. I didn’t understand the reasons behind the hate. More importantly, I myself had done absolutely nothing to them.  It wasn’t MY fault.

What I DID understand is that when I was in grade four, my father had to come to meet me every single day, twice a day, at noon and after school. If he didn’t, other children would be waiting at the doors for me, ready to beat me up, because I was white.  I understood that my mother was at her wit’s end, trying to keep me in mitts and a hat because other children consistently stole them away from me.  I understood that people put worms and burdocks in my hair, because I was white. I understood that no boy would ever want to go out with me because I was undesirable.  I was a loser.  My classmates found out that my first name is Mary, and they laughed.  Mary Jeanne Chabot… no one would ever want to marry Jeanne Chabot.

I understood that I could never be proud of any of my achievements, because that brought on the next worse accusation: “Ever proud that one.” I learned to never be proud of myself, to never cry for anything, to never show happiness.

I was an outsider.  My very presence was a burden on my classmates.  They were obligated to tolerate my existence at school, on sports teams and on class outings. For years, I tried to figure out what was wrong with me. If I reread my diary from my teen years, entry after entry sounds like a constant self-critique. “Did I laugh too much today?  Maybe I should just not make jokes anymore.  People don’t like my jokes.  I shouldn’t have said this, I shouldn’t have laughed at that.  I was too happy, or too talkative or too something. I am too gross.” Many of my peers made fun of my hair, or my clothes. It took a long time for me to realize that THIS WAS NOT NORMAL and that most people (elsewhere at least) did NOT automatically hate me on sight or think that I was a homely, repulsive excuse for a human being.

THIS was my white privilege.  A word to the wise please, DON’T assume you know what anyone else’s experience is, especially not a stranger’s, because you don’t. That’s just not something you can tell about someone by the colour of their skin or their profile picture.  In fact, that could be considered (*gasp*) racist.

As an adult, I found out that I was not the only one who dealt with this kind of bullying. Any child who was paler-faced or who had mixed parents also had similar experiences, although to a  lesser degree. These others, after all, even those of mixed race, could all claim to belong there, could all claim their Cree heritage, whereas I could not. They had their extended family; aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, in the community, a kind of support circle, while I did not.

I have since heard the stories of some of my peers who grew up with parents and grandparents who had either gone through residential school, or were the children of those who had gone through residential school. Stories of parents unable to show affection to their children because they didn’t know how.  Stories of parents saying the cruelest things to their children because of the pain they kept bottled up inside.  Stories of broken families and multiple half-siblings from different step parents because people had never learned from their parents how to have a relationship and stay together. Stories of substance abuse brought on by depression and a feeling of worthlessness. Stories, many, many stories of suicide.

When a WHOLE population grows up in institutions, no one has their parents’ example to go back on.  You don’t get individual attention or affection or care from adults in an institution when there are a hundred more children with the same needs. Children need their parents.  What happened to First Nations people is exactly what would happen to ANY society if you put all the children into State run orphanages or boarding schools instead of letting their parents parent them.  Try to imagine the social dysfunction that would cause.  This is what, ironically, most conservative Christians are against.  This is why so many choose to home-school.  We should be the FIRST to recognize what a huge mistake residential schools were. We should own that, and recognize that social dysfunction is passed on from one generation to the next. It is NOT just something that happened years ago, it is STILL happening.  We need to recognize that and support them in their efforts to take back their culture and their lives, to deal with their hurts and become strong people, capable of mature relationships, communication, showing affection, and building each other up instead of tearing each other down.

When I moved away from my community, I had to relearn social norms.  I grew up in a place where you don’t offer money for a favour because it is understood that what comes around goes around.  I moved to a place where my new friends would constantly be upset with me because I didn’t offer to pay for their gas, or for some other thing. It didn’t occur to me because I, in turn, did things for free for them. I learned the hard way that you have to at least OFFER or people will think you are profiting off them. Had I been from an obvious ethnic minority, my friends might have been more understanding, might have explained things to me. But I was WHITE. I was supposed to know these things.

Even now, I have to consciously make myself do things a certain way in certain circumstances, because it doesn’t come naturally to me. Although I know this is how it is done here, it is alien to where I grew up. Job interviews are bad, because I dislike trying to sell myself.  I grew up learning never to be proud of myself remember? This also makes it hard for me to insist on getting something I am due, (at work or elsewhere) if someone doesn't feel like giving it to me. Bargaining is another thing I have a hard time with. (I usually leave that to my husband - yes a boy finally DID want to marry me, imagine that!) Where I grew up, you don’t try to pay people less for what they are selling. It makes you seem cheap.

Some of them grew up to have children blonder than the blondest of my own children.  They are STILL Cree and being brought up as such.  Had that been my case, for you to tell me that I needed to look past my experience and white privilege would have been quite hurtful.

Actually, to be honest, it WAS rather hurtful to me. A journey that was filled with very profound and direct experiences with my Higher Divine Self in direct connection to the Higher Realms and Source Intelligence.

A few years ago, Ram wrote a lovely post on yoga and positive psychology. He spoke of positive psychology as a new and burgeoning field of study, pioneered, in its current incarnation, by Martin Seligman and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. A serious yoga practitioner for decades, I was at the time just beginning to immerse myself in the study of positive psychology, and his thoughts on the connections between this area of psychology and yoga resonated strongly with me; I also found profound connections between the two disciplines. 

Now, having earned my Master's degree in Professor Seligman’s seminal program at the University of Pennsylvania, I can say with more authority that Ram got everything right, even down to his guide to pronouncing Professor Csikszentmihalyi’s daunting name. I love what he had to say about how we yogis experience the sense of immersion and timelessness, defined by Professor Csikszentihalyi as flow, when we practice. This is one of many connections that can be made between both the study and practice of yoga with positive psychology, and here, in this series of posts, I would like to explore some of the others.

I trace my original interest in positive psychology to a time, years ago, when I happened to hear a story on the radio about the happiness set point theory, the idea that some or perhaps all of our capacity for personal happiness is rooted in our genetic brain chemistry. This brand-new (at least to me) concept struck me as very plausible, and my initial thought was how fortunate I was, as I recognized my own capacity for happiness was on the higher side. Just a little more thought, though, had me questioning to what extent my years of daily yoga practice might have affected that capacity and “set point.” 

Like many—perhaps most—modern practitioners, I originally came to yoga for the physical exercise and health benefits, and I didn’t question or look deeply into the profound boost to my overall well-being I found there; it all got filed under the general category of “feeling good.” I hadn’t even been particularly interested in yoga when a friend pretty much dragged me to my first class some 30 years ago, but afterwards I could hardly believe how great I felt. 

This was the hook that kept me coming to yoga classes, and then led me to develop my own personal yoga practice at home, something that over the years became a cornerstone of my life. The deeper psychological and/or spiritual (depending on your orientation and point of view) aspects of yoga snuck into my consciousness gradually and organically as I stuck with the practice and became serious about it. The desire to share these benefits and contribute to others’ well-being is what eventually brought me to teaching. 

Once that set-point theory was brought to my attention, the chicken-versus-egg question it sparked about the link between happiness and the mind/body connection stayed with me. Even to this day, the difference I feel before and after practicing can astonish me. In addition, it wasn’t long into my practice that I understood the benefits I was realizing were cumulative as well as immediate. No matter what else is going on, a week with more practice time is better than one with less. When I compared what seemed to be my personal set-point—my tendency to be in a good mood and general orientation toward being a cup half-full person—with family members who presumably were genetically similar to me but struggled more with emotional equilibrium, I had to wonder what accounted for the difference. Yoga was such a consistent and positive part of my life that the possibility it was affecting my brain chemistry was one possible reason. This also raised some interesting questions for me about the overall connections between physical health and mental/emotional well-being. 

I gradually realized this was something I wanted to investigate. While looking for classes in health psychology, I happened upon an introductory positive psychology class offered through U.C. Berkeley extension, and I knew immediately it was for me. This intuition was affirmed throughout the 15-week course, which I found both fascinating and inspiring. It was in this class that I read Seligman's book Flourish and learned about the Master’s program he had developed and helmed at the University of Pennsylvania, which I later applied to, attended, and ultimately completed in fall 2016. 

I came to UPenn’s MAPP program with the intention of studying and writing about happiness and the mind/body connection. What I quickly learned was that this, and anything to do with the body and our physical experience of life, is a very recent area of study in positive psychology, which is itself a relatively new field. 

Positive psychology is the study of human happiness, often referred to as subjective well-being in academia, and of how we find fulfillment and meaning in life. While I was in school and would mention I was studying positive psychology, a common question, often asked ironically and with amusement, was “As opposed to negative psychology?” 

Well, yes. Although psychology is the overall study of the mind, it was developed mainly to study and find solutions for mental illness and pathologies, and this is largely where the focus remained for the first 100 years. This is understandable; human evolution gave us a negativity bias (which I will explore in more depth in a future post) to be alert to threats and better help us survive them. Positive emotions and experiences are, in evolutionary terms, secondary to basic survival. And there is no denying that mental illness is a serious cause of suffering for both individuals and society as a whole and requires serious attention. 

Beyond that, however, there is a whole spectrum of human happiness, achievement and even transcendence to be explored. This is the realm of positive psychology: What is it that is happening when things go right, psychologically speaking? What can we learn, and teach, about the positive side of the human experience? How can we build on that knowledge to create more happiness and fulfillment for individuals, and can we expand from there to develop more positive, harmonious functioning of organizations and societies? How, in short, can we create more happiness and authentic positivity in the world? 

Although this may be slowly changing, the concept of mind/body dualism, or the idea that mind and body are separate—and that the mind is inherently superior—is a strong, pervasive bias in academia. For this reason, there have been two parallel tracks, positive psychology and mind/body science, for quite some time. Again, this is changing, largely because of those, like me, who recognize that there are many places where these two disciplines intersect, and also that our experience of happiness, and indeed, of life itself, is inseparable from our physical embodiment. 

In fact, as science is rapidly discovering and recognizing, there is no discernible separation between mind and body, and there is a growing push in positive psychology to add the physical dimension to the definition of flourishing. My work in the field largely centers around the robust and growing connections between these two formerly separate tracks, and my belief that conceptualization of mind and body as separate is an entirely false construct. We are, each of us, one amazing and fully integrated system, operating on a continuous mind/body feedback loop. While we commonly refer to this as the mind/body connection—a term that reflects how ubiquitous the idea that they’re separate is — I would actually characterize it as the complete interconnection and integration of mind and body. 

We yogis experience this profound sense of integration for ourselves through our practice. While hatha yoga may be defined as a physical activity, the majority of practitioners recognize that the sense of well-being we feel after practicing goes far beyond the physical. And few would deny that feeling better in our bodies refreshes our minds, elevates our overall moods, and brightens our days. Although yoga is popularly associated with the body and the physical practices of asana and pranayama, the broader system of yoga is also, like psychology, the study of the mind. It could even be considered one of the precursors to modern psychology.

Disciplines such as yoga that aim to support body, mind, and spirit have moved from the fringes to the mainstream over the past couple of decades, as both direct experience and academic and medical research have given credibility to the purported holistic value of these practices. When I posted this Harvard Medical School article about the health benefits of yoga on Facebook recently, another yoga teacher commented “I don’t need science tell me yoga is good for me. My body/mind tells me every day.” I agree! Yet both the validation and the specific information that science can give us are useful. 

While I didn’t need science to validate my experience, positive psychology has been very helpful in giving me language to explain it. Prominent positive psychologist Barbara Frederickson, an expert on positive emotions, coined the term “upward spiral,” which is a kind of escalating positive feedback loop that occurs when an activity gives us a felt boost in our well-being, which then bolsters our motivation to repeat that activity. This was very much my experience when I was developing my yoga practice. When people have remarked on my “great discipline” in sticking with my practice for so long, I’ve long replied that it’s not self-discipline, it’s motivation, and I’m keenly aware that there is a distinct difference. My practice has always been based on, as we say in positive psychology, intrinsic motivation rather than any sense of obligation. I was delighted to discover that there has been extensive work done in positive psychology that has delineated various types of motivation, as well as what one leading scholar terms passionate engagement with an activity, and has studied their different outcomes. 

Three decades and counting since my first encounter with yoga, these positive psychology concepts describe my experience and process exactly and explain the reasons that I have remained so consistently motivated to come to my mat more days than not in any given week. It starts with the reliable, immediate, and profound boost to my well-being, body and mind, that comes from practicing. On top of the in-the-moment benefits, this consistent experience continuously reinforces and increases both my motivation and passionate engagement. It helps get me through the plateaus and inevitable days or weeks of resistance or boredom. Most compelling, perhaps, it has also helped me develop both confidence and self-reliance as I’ve learned how significantly I can affect my own happiness, and whether I have a good day or a lousy one. 

This is the stuff of positive psychology, and why yoga has been, for me, a happiness practice.

Hyperallergic: Linda Nochlin, Feminist Art Historian Who Changed the Game, Dies at 86

Linda Nochlin, who passed away on Monday at 86 years old, was an art historian, not a bomb-thrower. Nevertheless, when her 1971 essay, ironically titled “Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?,” appeared in ARTnews that January, it triggered a nuclear chain reaction that reconfigured not just the art world, but seemingly all areas of culture.

An authority challenging authority, Nochlin proved that the institutional barriers encountered by female artists at academies and museums made her question moot. How could there be great women artists if they were once barred from the schools, museums, and genres that conferred greatness? With great clarity and greater wit, Nochlin turned the question around, famously concluding, “The fault lies not in our stars, our hormones, our menstrual cycles, or empty internal spaces, but in our institutions and our education.”

It was my freshman English professor who advised my class to read Nochlin’s essay the winter of that same year. Almost immediately we could feel the explosion of energy — was it fission? — released in other corners of the culture.

Eleven months later, Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pitman Hughes published Ms. magazine. In 1972, John Berger’s Ways of Seeing, a critique of the implicit ideologies of Western art, aired on BBC television. Then, in 1975, Laura Mulvey’s “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema,” an analysis of how Hollywood films aligned viewers with “the male gaze,” was published in the British journal Screen. We couldn’t prove that Nochlin was a direct influence, but it seemed to many of us that Steinem and Berger and Mulvey stood on her shoulders. For me, Nochlin personified the heroine in Delacroix’s 1830 painting, “Liberty Leading the People.” (And I bet I wasn’t the only one who collaged and Xeroxed the Delacroix, adding Nochlin’s head to Liberty’s body.)

Had Nochlin written only “Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?” she would still be a seminal figure in the history of art. Yet that was not enough for this systematic thinker. If the academies and art institutions were hermetically sealed and needed their doors and windows to open to fresh thinking, then she would make that happen by educating generations of future art historians and curators with an expanded, some would say radical, curriculum. In 1969, she introduced a course at Vassar College (where she herself had received her BA in 1951) titled “The Image of Women in 19th and 20th Century Art,” which explored — among other topics — how male and female artists depicted women differently. (This led to another of her great essays, “Issues of Gender in Cassatt and Eakins.”)

Though both were transformative, it was neither Nochlin’s writing nor her pedagogy that had the most profound effect on me. What rocked my world was how Nochlin literally excavated the basements and archives of museums around the globe to rescue female artists from oblivion. In the 1970s I could name maybe three historic female artists: Mary Cassatt, Kathe Kollwitz, and Georgia O’Keeffe. Nochlin changed that when she co-curated, along with Ann Sutherland Harris, the landmark Women Artists: 1550–1950 exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Brooklyn Museum. They introduced me to Rosa Bonheur, Sonia Delaunay, Alexandra Exter, Artemisia Gentileschi, Berthe Morisot, and Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun, and 35 other important female painters.

The experience was as life-affirming as it was life changing. And the kick of it was Nochlin showed everyone that yes, indeed, there had been great women artists. That show was the gift that kept on giving, inspiring historians to explore the work by other neglected artists (for instance, Frida Kahlo and Meret Oppenheim) and to reattribute works originally thought to be by men to their female students. For years after that exhibition, women came up to Nochlin and described how the show changed their lives. Who knew before that women were part of an international artistic tradition?

One who never personally encountered Nochlin and read only her eye-opening books (for example, Realism, and her monograph, Courbet) might not know that she was a performative lecturer and cutup. It would be fair to say that she was a performance art historian. At a 1972 meeting of the Collage Art Association in San Francisco, she famously delivered a keynote on “Eroticism and the Image of Woman in 19th Century Art.” Rather puckishly, she compared “Buy My Apples,” a famous 19th-century photograph of a naked woman whose breasts rest on a platter of pommes, to “Buy My Bananas,” a photograph she took of a naked male colleague whose manhood dangles above a platter of the curved yellow fruit. According to those in the room, it was the first experience of many of the male art historians in that room of sexual objectification.

Nochlin was many things: she was a scholar, professor, activist, Francophile, and knowledgeable of all-things Yohji Yamamoto; as well as twice a wife, twice a widow, and twice a mother. First and last, though, she was a historian.

“Nothing, I think, is more interesting, more poignant, and more difficult to seize than the intersection of self and history,” Nochlin wrote in “Starting from Scratch,” the 1994 essay in which she remembers and reconsiders feminist art history and her role in that unfinished enterprise.

Rereading that essay, I realize she wrote her own epitaph (or is it an epigraph?) more eloquent than any I could match.

“In 1969 and the years that followed,” she wrote, “the intersection of myself and history was of a different order. It was no mere passive conjunction of events that united me to the history of that year and the ones that followed, but active engagement and participation, a sense that I, along with many other politicized, and yes, liberated, women, were actually intervening in the historical process and changing history itself: the history of art, of culture, and of institutions, and of consciousness.”

“And this knowledge even today, almost 25 years later, gives us an ongoing sense of achievement and purpose like no other I know of.”

Ep 8 - Set Goals: Design your Life!

What if you could predict the next five years of your life?  What if you could actually design the next five years of your life?  What if you could decide; how beautiful your home would be; how incredibly loving your significant-other would be; how much income you would have; how you would vacation in exotic and luxurious locations around the world; and how you would be so well-off, that you’d be able to contribute to causes that are important to you?  Wouldn’t that be amazing?  Wouldn’t that be fun, to have that amount of control over your life?  Listen as I share with you, how so many people have been able to actually design their lives.  And, how you can the same strategy to shape your future!

Monty Roberts Story

Growing up, Monty went with his father from stable to stable, farm to farm, and ranch to ranch training horses. Consequently he missed much of his high school education. As a senior he was asked to write a paper on what career he wanted to pursue. That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing in great detail his goal to build and own a dream horse ranch.

The next day he turned his paper in. Two days later he received it back. On the front page was a large red "F" with a note that read, "See me after class." When he saw the teacher, he asked why he was given an "F".

The teacher said, 'This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you'll have to pay large stud fees. There's no way you could ever do it.” Then the teacher added, “If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.'"

Monty went home and asked his father, what he should do.  His father answered “I know that this is important for you. So you have to make your own mind on this“.

After thinking about it for a week, he turned the paper back in exactly as he had first written it saying to the teacher, "You can keep the F and I'll keep my dream."

Today, Monty owns a 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of a 200-acre horse ranch in California.  He raises and trains thoroughbred racehorses.

He has a best-selling book titled, “The Man Who Listens to Horses”.

And, he was the inspiration for “The Horse Whisperer” with Robert Redford

Oh, and he still has that school paper framed over the fireplace.

Set Goals

Chances are, you’ve heard it many times.  You’ve heard the success stories.  You know you should do it.  And yet, if you’re like most people, you don’t.  What am I talking about.  As you’ve may have guessed, I’m talking about setting goals.

According to studies, less than 3 percent of Americans have written goals, and less than 1 percent, review their goals on a daily basis.

There are 3 main reasons people don’t set goals:

They just don’t realize the effectiveness of goal setting

Fear of failure (of not reaching the goal)

People simply don’t know how (to set goals)

Let’s break these down.

Effectiveness of Goal Setting

If someone very successful told you, the key to their success was goal setting.  Would you believe it?  Or, would you prefer to think that person is just lucky?  It’s just so hard for some people to believe, that something as simple as goal setting, can make such a difference.

What if I told you, that goal setting, can increase your luck?  Sounds crazy, doesn’t it?  But, it’s true.  Because when you focus on your goals, you’ll recognize opportunities that otherwise may be missed.  Have you ever been in a social gathering, with many different conversations going-on, and you hear your name mentioned?  It could’ve been from a conversation, far across the room, but you heard it!  When you’re clear on your goals, opportunities around you, suddenly become obvious.  And, you’ll feel compelled to take advantage of those opportunities.  And, then you, my friend, will be the person that others talk about, as being the lucky one!

The fact is, focusing on your goals, will help you to consciously, and unconsciously, make progress toward your goals.  It truly is a fascinating process.  A process that I’ll elaborate on in upcoming episodes on affirmations and visualization.

Fear of Failure

Let’s take a quick look at the 2nd concern, “fear of failure”.  The idea that you could “fail” when striving for a particular goal, is simply a perspective.  You actually deserve credit for any effort, that you make, toward a goal.  The only concept of failure, you should have, is failure to even try.  I want to challenge you to think about your goals in this way.  When working toward a goal, there simply is no failure.  Maybe the goal takes more time than you thought.  Maybe the goal takes more research than you originally planned.  If so, you can decide to take more time, to reach the goal.  Or, to put more effort into reaching the goal.  Or, with this additional knowledge, about what is required to reach the goal, you can decide, you’d rather pursue a different goal.  Pursuing goals always results in learning and growing!  The only fail, is not to try in the first place.

Finally, let’s address the last concern, how to set a goal, in the first place.  And, of course, we want to set goals that excite us, and motivate us.  So, let’s get to work!

How to Set Goals for Maximum Effectiveness

Alright it’s time to get smart!!  Smart is actually an acronym which will help us to set goals for maximum effectiveness.

S = Specific

M = Measurable

A = Attainable

R = Relevant

T = Time-based

Let’s go through each of these...

S = Specific

Vague goals produce vague results.  To get what you want out of life, you have to take the time to decide what you really want!  When you realize the power of goal setting, this gets really fun!!  You realize that you’re basically designing your future!

The key is to decide exactly what you want to achieve, and write it down, or log it in your phone, or computer.

By being specific, on what we want, your subconscious, will bring to your attention the opportunities, people, and resources, that will help you!

Let’s say that I’d like to further develop my presentation skills.  Well, instead of stating a goal of “improving my presentation skills”, I want to be more a little more specific, like:

“To give a keynote speech for a company”

M = Measurable

Just as we must know what we want.  We also must know how much, to what extent.  This drives the necessary changes that must happen to reach the goal.

This could be the amount of money you plan to save, the square footage of your new house, or maybe the number of days that you’d like to vacation each year.

To make my keynote speech goal, more specific, I’ll revise it to say:

“To give a 45-minute keynote speech for a Fortune 100 company”

A = Attainable

Because, I know that goals work, I love setting big goals!  Basically, my idea of what is attainable, has grown with years of goal setting.

You too, can set, and achieve, big goals!!  However, big goals may feel intimidating to you, if you’re new to goal setting.

Try setting a few small, more attainable, goals at first.  As you achieve a few goals, and grow your confidence, your sense of what is attainable will expand!

To make my goal attainable, but still a bit of a stretch, I’ll first target a Fortune 500 Company, and after accomplishing that, I can target a Fortune 100 Company:

“To give a 45-minute keynote speech for a Fortune 500 company”

R = Relevant

In an earlier episode we discussed the importance of Purpose.  More specifically identifying your personal Purpose.  We then formed a Mission Statement, which is basically a way of summarizing your Purpose.  That purpose, is your navigation system.  Your overall guiding light.

Does your goal align with your overall Purpose?  Does it feel right?  If not, perhaps the goal may not be in your best interest.  Maybe the goal is not worth pursuing.  On the other hand, if the goal feels like something valuable to you, and you really want to pursue it, perhaps your Mission Statement needs to be revised.

To further align my goal with my overall purpose to inspire people to improve their lives, I’ll adjust my goal as follows:

“To give an inspirational and uplifting 45-minute keynote speech for a Fortune 500 company”

T = Time-based

When do you want to have this goal accomplished?  Set a date.  The date should be far enough out to actually accomplish the goal.  However, it should also be close enough, to compel you to take action.

If our subconscious thinks we have an endless amount of time to reach our goal.  It’ll be in no rush.  But, if we have completion date, our mind can get to work, figuring each step out, to keep us moving forward, on schedule.

To make my goal time-based, I’ll change it as follows:

“To give an inspirational and uplifting keynote speech for a Fortune 500 company by December 31st, 2018.”

So you now have the recipe for setting effective goals.

Set Some SMART Goals

I’d like to challenge you to set at least 3 goals for yourself.  To help get you started, I’m going to breakdown some areas that you can focus on.  As, I read each area, I want you to think about where your life stands, in that particular area.  And, any changes that you’d like to achieve in that area.  This is a great starting point, in deciding which goals to pursue.

Categories for Setting Goals

Business (Career / Ventures)

This could involve a significant promotion where you currently work.

This could involve starting your own business.

Financial (Savings / Investments / Income)

How much would you like to have saved?

Maybe you’re interested in Real Estate investing?

Relationships (Family / Friends / Peers)

Would you like to spend more time with family?

Would you like to improve the quality of your friendships?

Health (Spiritual / Mental / Physical)

Are you interested to attend a yoga retreat?

Maybe you want to trim-up and gain more muscle?

Recreation (Relaxation / Fun Activities / Travel)

Maybe you need to schedule some time to rest, or do some reading.

Have you always thought going to an exotic country?

Personal (Education / Development / Experiences)

Is there a course that you always wanted to take?

Or, maybe you want to take up a new hobby, like photography.

Contribution (Philanthropy / Volunteer Work)

Is there a cause that you’re passionate about?

Or maybe you want to help beautify your neighborhood or community.
