Snake Charmer: Sesskag fic
Summary: Sesshoumaru is extremely amused by the prey currently trapped in his den. Kagome just wanted a vacation. Naga Sesshoumaru fic. Sesskag AU.
Rated M
Read on Ao3, fanfiction.net or Dokuga
AN: Sooo I might make a series of stories featuring Monster! Sess or Monster! Kagome. I've already written a vampire one and a werewolf one. Shall see! I hope you enjoy this.
Snake Charmer pt. 1
Impossibly blue skies free from clouds stretched out above her head that bright and cheerful morning. It was hot. Uncomfortably so, but Kagome welcomed it despite the sweat beading at the back of her neck. Clad in a two-piece bikini hidden by her cute blue summer dress, the cotton thankfully thin and breezy, she drank in the sunny scenery greedily.
Hawaii sprawled out, with its rolling hills, high cliffs and exotic greenery. True, it was a little tourist-centric where they were staying, but the Japanese college students could hardly complain.
"I'm so excited for cliff diving~" Eri grinned, practically buzzing as they walked down a road beside the ocean. "Kyle said he'd meet us there, right? Do you think he'd be more attracted to a confident girl, or should I pretend to be scared?"
Yuka rolled her eyes, adjusting the strap of her bag over one shoulder. "From the way you were flirting last night at the hotel, I don't think he'll care either way."
"Maybe just fake a dizzy spell so he can catch you in his big strong arms~" Ayumi giggled.
"And what about you? I'm sure his friend will be there."
"Oh, don't get my hopes up!"
The three laughed, noticing their friend's silence once the girlish giggles died down.
"What's wrong, Kagome?" brows knitted with concern, Ayumi gently tapped her shoulder.
Shaken from her reverie, Kagome dragged her distracted gaze away from the ocean. "Hm? Oh… nothing," she smiled. "I was just thinking about what that man tried to say to us."
"You mean the Native we saw earlier?" Yuka arched a brow. "Forget it, none of us know Hawaiian and when he switched to English it was a lost cause. None of us can string a sentence together."
"It's true, I forget most of mine when we left school," Ayumi sighed mournfully.
"I flunked English," Eri smirked.
Shaking her head, Kagome folded her arms and frowned, "maybe so, but I could pick out a few of his words. 'Water' and 'no' with some kind of motion with his hands. He approached us while Kyle was talking to us about the cliff diving location with that map. Maybe it's a dangerous area, and the man was trying to warn us?"
"If it was a warning, Kyle would have told us. He said it was fine, just that we should be wary of any rocks, but he knows the area. It's standard stuff," waving this off, Eri quickened her pace, heels clanking on the hot road.
"He knows the area better than a guy who lives here?" Kagome drawled, sharing a glance with Ayumi. Her more sensitive friend bit her lip, giving a weak shrug.
"Let's at least check it out," she said, adding more under her breath; "Eri is really excited. We can humour her a little by meeting with Kyle again today. None of us has to jump."
Releasing a breath, Kagome set her concerns aside for now. It wasn't like she wanted to be a wet blanket about it. Still, the man's wide, imploring brown eyes continued to nag at her mind. Such an expression could bridge the gap in communication. She'd practically felt his concern.
---
Kyle was a tanned, brown-haired boy travelling around the world. He struck Kagome as the adrenalin junkie type. Eri fawned over him, positively smitten. It was rare for a foreigner from London to be so well versed in Japanese, and they'd met through an online dating site, organising a get together while he was in Hawaii. Thus Kagome and the others had been dragged along. Kyle was practically their tour guide and means of verbal communication with English speakers.
His friends were less fluent in Japanese. The three shirtless blonde-haired young men flustered both Yuka and Ayumi, talking in broken sentences.
Kagome couldn't say she minded the male attention as they walked together to the cliffs. Obviously, they weren't up for anything permanent, just fooling around. Kagome had indulged in that sort of thing before. Unfortunately, it was quickly becoming boring. Men just couldn't get a clue. Whether it was a long-term boyfriend or a one-night stand, a playboy or attentive virgin, she found her experiences frustrating on a level she couldn't quite understand. It was lacklustre.
Perhaps today would be different. It would've been nice to hang out with Kyle's friends and get to know them if she could just rid herself of the man's warning.
"This is the spot," Kyle grinned, showing his dimples.
The group had stopped atop a cliff with a few trees littered near the edge. Yuka peered over the lip of the side, holding onto a branch.
"Wow, that's uh… quite a drop."
Kyle rolled his shoulder, muscles coiling. "It looks worse than it is. So! Who's going first?" he grinned wider, clapping his hands and rubbing them together.
Eri laughed nervously, hugging his arm, "shouldn't you go, oh fearless leader?"
"I believe in ladies first," sea-foam blue eyes strayed to Kagome, who remained a little uncomfortable.
"What about your friend?"
"Ah- she's a little afraid. I don't think she'll be jumping," Eri dismissed.
"Aww c'mon," Kyle broke away from her to gesture to Kagome, inviting her closer. "At least take a look. No point in walkin' all the way here and not seeing the view at least."
"I can see it fine from here," Kagome gave a smile that showed her teeth. "Thanks anyway."
"Kagome."
Judging from her friend's expressions, they clearly wanted her to act more respectful.
Biting back a sigh, Kagome forced a more amiable smile upon her lips and stepped closer to the edge, peering down.
To Kyle's credit, it was a stunning view. She'd never seen water so crystal clear and blue. She couldn't tell how deep it plunged, but the waves rolled pure white, not a blemish in sight. No deadly rocks either.
What had the man been warning us about?
"What do ya think?" a playful voice rasped close to her ear. Kagome felt the heat of his body draw near.
Her lips pursed, "it's beautiful," she allowed. Maybe she was being too much of a stick in the mud, it wasn't like her.
"Then- why not take a closer look?"
Hands shoved.
Blue eyes flew wide as Kagome felt her body careen forward, hair swooping back. Letting out a fearful scream, Kagome felt her feet drag and fly free from solid earth. Gravity pulled her down.
Falling was surreal, disorientating. She'd pretty much left her stomach back with her friends it lept so violently. She couldn't tell up from down, but the ocean swooped in closer and closer.
Instinctively, Kagome sucked in a huge breath.
Making impact with warm waters, she plunged deep beneath the surface, bubbles obscuring her vision.
Almost immediately, still, serene waters swirled into motion.
Kagome's heart thundered with alarm, bracing herself. She mindlessly kicked her legs out of instinct the second something started pulling her downwards. Trying hard to break away from the current, her efforts proved to be in vain as it swept her up like a whirlpool.
Kagome closed her eyes. It became impossible to know where she was, how far the surface lay beyond her reach. Her lungs strained.
Getting desperate, Kagome abandoned all logic and started to swim with the current rather than fight it. If she was going to die, she'd rather it be while doing something. Staying motionless didn't suit her.
Aching lungs grappled for air, and Kagome felt herself weaken. Desperate motions slowed. Her mind hazed with fog, becoming dizzy.
Gradually, she began to resemble a motionless rag-doll.
Something strong and sturdy wrapped around her waist, pulling her body.
Kagome weakly felt the sensation of being yanked. Shadows entered her murky gaze like she'd passed through a tunnel, lights soon reaching her again. And then she was suddenly flicked up and released.
Gasping the second her head broke free from salty waters, she sucked in sharp breaths and coughing violently. Kagome then promptly collapsed.
She blearily noticed the dim lighting and smooth rock she found herself splayed upon, shuddering. I almost died.
It took a few moments to adjust and control her breathing, but eventually, after laying there and recovering from the experience, Kagome shakily roused herself enough to sit up. Looking around, she found a cavern of sorts awaiting her. The layout was spacious. Rock walls sprawled around her, a single circular opening high above in the ceiling allowing a circle of concentrated sunlight to pour down into the ocean pool she'd surfaced in.
Kagome pulled herself onto a rocky platform, following a walkway around the water and leaving wet footprints on cool stone in her wake. Thick shadows lay beyond the opposite side of the pool, with a multitude of paths in the rock-face branching off in different directions. They looked as though they'd been hollowed out by a huge earthworm. Kagome wagered they were a maze of sorts.
No way am I going in there.
Glancing up at the natural skylight, Kagome bit her lip. Such smooth rock would be too steep and slippy to climb, and she doubted a helicopter passing overhead could spot her inside. She wasn't even sure how far she was from the mainland. Silence reigned within the lonely cavern, save for lapping water within the glittering pool. She couldn't hear any tourists or speedboats outside.
Kagome swallowed.
The pool.
She didn't exactly like the idea of chancing another swim. However, diving in again to reach the open ocean could be her only chance of finding help.
Putting it off for now, Kagome wandered around the edge of the pool, rubbing her arms absentmindedly. She felt shaken from the high fall alone, never mind nearly dying from a random whirlpool.
"That's what that man was trying to warn us about," she mused to herself, glancing at the water. "I hope Kyle doesn't push anyone else in. That bastard!" she seethed. She'd always been a strong swimmer, but if he had pushed in Ayumi, even with regular waters, the situation could've been dangerous. The idea of it only pissed her off even more. "When I get outta here, I'm giving him a piece of my mind. I bet he'll say - 'ohh it was just a joke.' Ha! You can tell that to my fist, buddy!"
A shadow moved to her left.
Kagome jumped, snapping her gaze to it. Sweat pricked at the back of her neck.
"H-hello?"
Nothing.
Well, it had been out of her peripheral vision. What a convenient time for her mind to start playing tricks on her.
Taking a deep breath, Kagome let the air whoosh out of her lungs. "And now I'm seeing things," she rambled, grasping her hair and wringing out excess salty water. "That's not unusual though, heck I think I see things passing by in the kitchen all the time. Totally nor- AH!" Kagome started badly, looking directly at the shadows. A sleek, long thing swept out into bright sunlight across the floor before retreating smoothly. It had been pale, covered in a sheen that resembled scales.
Was that a… tail?
Kagome took one step back. Then another. Whatever it was, it had been quite large.
She didn't want any of that. None.
Pivoting sharply, Kagome hurried directly towards the pool. Climbing down a rocky incline, she bent her legs, muscles coiling and springing free as she leapt, body arching into a dive.
She made it into warm waters, kicking her legs madly. Gliding down from rippling surface to murky bottom of the pool, Kagome swam towards an opening in the rock wall. Something large and solid slid beneath her stomach then- closing around her waist and yanking.
Kagome's mouth opened in a gasp- pulled from the water with a hard tug. She coughed the second she surfaced, spitting out saltwater and holding onto the thing wrapped around her waist.
The tail.
Kagome's eyes widened, squirming and trying to get free as water dripped from her body, watching the pool drift further away as she ascended. The white scales felt smooth, warm beneath her touch.
Gritting her teeth, Kagome tried to dig her nails in, only to find them repelled by deceptively firm coils.
"You do not possess claws nor fangs sharp enough to cut through my hide, little human."
Kagome jolted, whipping her head up.
Half-lidded, piercing golden-yellow eyes stared back.
She gaped.
Slit pupils dilated.
The man observing her with a wry smile possessed beautifully ethereal features. Pointed ears, exotic magenta marks slashing across his pale cheeks. A silver fall of long hair spilt down over broad shoulders, hanging off the high rock he lounged upon that overlooked the pool. He'd propped both elbows on his bent tail, resting a strong chin upon one hand. The tips of his fingers resembled long, frighteningly sharp claws. Kagome blinked, trying to make sense of his form. His head and torso resembled a human male- physique impressive. From the waist down, however, an impossibly long snake tail sprawled out. She wasn't sure how vast it spread, a little preoccupied.
"Listen pal, I don't know what stage play I've stumbled across, but great effects. Top-notch. The puppet feels really lifelike," she minded some slick hair from her face. "The contacts are hot too, but I'd really like to be set down now."
"Would you?" he purred silkily, tail twisting to flip her upside down. Kagome gasped as black hair cascaded in front of her face, hanging towards the distant pool. "Unfortunately, this one has no interest in releasing you. It has been some time since prey has willingly stumbled into my den like a lost filly."
Kagome's mind raced. Prey. Shit.
"I-I didn't stumble in. The whirlpool-"
"Ah, yes," he hummed, rising from his perch languidly. His form moved smoothly, top half easing closer without fear of toppling from the rock his larger half wrapped around.
"Hn… few mortals are foolish enough to jump from that cliff at noon."
"I was pushed," Kagome seethed, bristling as he prodded and turned her like prized meat hanging off a hook. "Hey! Watch it!" She swiped an arm out, cheeks flushing. "Put me down this instant!"
The Snake-man tilted his head, "curious that of all people, my prey this time happens to be a woman from my homeland."
Kagome had been too startled to really think about it, but they were indeed conversing in Japanese.
"So you're a Japanese demon, huh?" she squeaked. "Awesome. We can talk more about that when the blood isn't rushing to my head. Put. Me. Down," a growl hissed free from her teeth.
His lips spread into a half-smirk, half sneer, exposing sharp, glistening fangs. He turned her upright once more, only to coil more segments of his strong, pale tail around her. A part of it twisted and slid around her knees, parting them.
Something twinged between her legs- a bead of sweat, hot and salty where it rolled down her thigh in a lazy trickle.
Kagome's eyes widened as the moving tail constricted beneath her chest, restricting the use of her arms and squeezing the air from her lungs like he'd trapped her within a huge fist.
His body loomed close, face hovering near. His touch felt oddly human upon her chin: grip as firm as any other arrogant male's.
"The harder you struggle, the tighter my grip," he uttered, gaze and voice almost gentle in their rich cadence.
Kagome fought to keep her breathing even, becoming still. He seemed intelligent and well spoken. If that was the case, talking her way out of the situation might be her best bet.
"For the record, I'm Kagome," she said, trying not to tremble. "W-what's your name, Mr Snake man?"
Ivory lashes fell shut and swept open in a slow blink. His lips parted, hesitating, as though out of practice with speaking it aloud.
"Sesshoumaru."
The Killing Perfection.
It sounded like a bad omen.
Kagome swallowed and kept blabbing. "Oh, that's cool. Your parents must've been anticipating a nice blood thirsty baby. I'm sure they're very proud."
His expression darkened, and Kagome quickly shut up. Clearly, that had been the wrong thing to say.
Sesshoumaru tipped his head to the side, breath fanning over her ear. "For the record," he uttered, archaic speech clearly unfamiliar with the term but imitating her, "my kind are not referred to as 'Snake Men.' I am a species of Naga."
"I-I see, sorry for using the wrong term," Kagome jolted as something flicked out close to her ear, nearly brushing the shell.
His tongue. Was he tasting the air?
Sesshoumaru made a low, pleasurable noise in his chest.
"You know… unless you're into playing with your food, maybe there's a reason you haven't eaten me yet," Kagome was ever the optimist.
"Pray tell: what would that reason be?" he asked, nose brushing and gliding into her hair. She felt his body roll as he inhaled deeply, having a ripple effect down his entire tail.
Kagome shivered. Oddly, the heat of him wrapped around her sent thrills racing up her spine due to every movement being intimately felt. The anticipation, fear and adrenaline mixed into a cocktail of absurdity. She felt its effects pour liquid heat into her lower abdomen.
"You want someone to talk to. Even people called 'The Killing Perfection' can get lonely. A-am I right in thinking you're the one who pulled me from the water?"
"Indeed."
Though she knew it wasn't out of any concern for her, Kagome nonetheless felt a stab of gratitude. "Thank you for that, I mean it. You're terrifying but much preferable to drowning."
Golden eyes danced. "Your compliments leave much to be desired."
Kagome's lips twitched. "Do you see what I mean, though? Maybe you just want a delightful conversationalist."
"Hn, perhaps," Sesshoumaru adjusted her, so that she loomed above him, his head dangerously close to her chest, "or perhaps I do just enjoy playing with my food."
Kagome jolted and gasped as a regal nose glided up the valley between her breasts, lips skimming, a teasing drag. She tried to squeeze her thighs together- prevented by a segment of his tail that rose and undulated slowly against her core, rubbing. Shamefully, Kagome moaned. Her wet dress, plastered to her form- pitifully could not hide the hard peaks of her nipples as her body heated.
"You respond quite enthusiastically to me, woman," Sesshoumaru purred, tongue flicking out to lick a long, wet arch up her chest, collarbone and neck. "Have you considered...you might enjoy my 'playing' with you?"
Panting, she quickly stopped her squirming hips. "L-let's talk about this," she swallowed, catching her breath. "We could make a game out of it. A real one."
Thankfully, his tail stopped.
"I am listening."
Okay, keep talking Kagome. She shifted, looking at the glittering slashes of magenta cutting over his tail like stripes. It was safer than getting distracted by his enchanting eyes.
"Is there a way out of here other than the pool?"
His silky voice caressed her hearing. "Yes."
"T-then let me run for 15 minutes. If I find the exit- you let me go. If you catch me, then fair enough, I'm yours to eat or... or whatever," Kagome muttered, cheeks heating. "But I can and will defend myself during the run."
Sesshoumaru's claw-tipped fingers grasped her chin, turning her face back to look at him.
His eyes were hypnotic in their richness of colour. Slit, inhuman pupils only drew her in instead of repelling. They smiled even as his lips remained still.
"Nothing would please me more," he purred, free hand gliding down her stomach, making it twitch. "You possess a silver tongue, girl. I have not met a prey that could hold a conversation before."
"Thanks, you're not so bad yourself- when you're not talking about eating me."
Chuckling with rich tones, the Naga loosened his tail, unwinding it so that she slid over his coils down to the walkway next to the pool.
Standing on her own two feet again, Kagome righted herself, glancing up at the looming Naga.
"Run along, little filly," he uttered languidly. His soft, masculine voice oddly put her at ease even as she prepared to run for her life. Perhaps this was how he lulled prey. Kagome chose not to examine why she'd responded so... favourably to him. It was the humidity. The adrenaline.
Kagome headed for a tunnel, realising half-way her mistake. It was pitch black inside, and she had no light.
Almost as immediately as she'd stepped inside- green flames flickered to life upon the walls. Torches lit her way, scattered further ahead.
Steeling herself, Kagome took a breath, bursting into a run.

Chapter 89-2 thoughts
HA HA WOW WHAT A FUN CHAPTER AM I RIGHT
Also, hey, it’s me, the blog formerly known as kurisuumakise. I changed my URL slightly since last month! Anyway, spoilers under the cut~
Kazuma used an incantation against Yukine, and I was under the impression they only worked on ayakashi. I think his ayakashi form is coming out because of his emotions acting up (like how when Nora transformed in front of Hiyori a few chapters ago), but weirdly it doesn’t look like the crow from before. More like a cat.
(also want to throw back to my 89 thoughts where I wondered how stable Yukine’s new powers were. fuck.)
Could it also be the god’s greatest secret? Like, Yukine learned his past without his name breaking, but it still seems like his memories are peeking out from the cracks.
“He’s actually crying, isn’t he” stab me with a rusty fucking knife I hate this an unbelievable amount
Yato’s words “There’s only one thing I can do to save him, even if I have to do it by force” concerns me. What is he referring to? The blow he/Kazuma lands on Yukine at the end of the chapter? Something else?? He already apologized, and he’d never release him, so I’m afraid to speculate on What it could be if it’s not the aforementioned blow.
Speaking of, I have no idea what happened there. But I’ll get to that, I want to talk about Ebisu first
Apparently if they can find the sorcerer’s grave and destroy it, they can kill him. This is eerily similar to Yukine destroying his own grave (the fridge) a couple chapters back. But also, hello, Father backstory? ARE WE FINALLY GETTING AN EXPLANATION?
To recap, here’s what we know: He was a human, heaven/gods did some wrong to him, he died with a grudge, escaped Yomi, gained godlike powers along the way (whether it’s directly because he escaped Yomi or something that happened during/after his time there remains to be seen), and can now name shinki with a brush and hop bodies every lifetime.
If they defeat Father, I wonder what will happen to Fujisaki. Is his soul dead? I kind of hope it’s not so he can apologize for all the shit Father pulled while using his body.
anyway back to Yukine sobbing hours
we KNEW Adachitoka went full pain mode on Yukine seeing Yato as his father. but HOLY SHIT the way he insulted him, and imagined even at the beginning that Yato was being condescending and arrogant, just cut me deep to my core. He’s replaced all the fond memories he has with Yato with the terrible ones he has from his life. After all, one year of good memories can’t override 14 years of abuse...
Yukine, my boy, Yato loves you so much, he’s not the piece of shit you’re imagining, PLEASE,
We saw a bit more of his father’s face now, and I think I’m right in saying he looks rather young. It’s hard to tell, but to be the father of a 14 year old? (And however much older Yuka is?) He’s not exactly...aged.
“If I raise my hand against him, I’m no different from my dad!” and all my homies started crying. No, but really--the verbal confirmation that Yato also sees himself as a father to Yukine, and as such refuses to hurt him. Adachitoka has to stop oneshotting me with these sad quotes. “That boy loved people” “So even now my father is still killing me” “Come home, Yukine” and on and on with this FUCKING MANGA
okay so. The Hurt. Let’s start with the positives--Yukine didn’t lose his hand or any of his fingers. Looks like it got cut pretty badly, but I would have screamed if they pulled a Kugaha with him.
Also, he reverted from that weird catboy form and is now back to being emo. Is that because he got his feelings back under control?
I have a nasty feeling “I did it” referred to Yukine thinking he killed his father finally. ughhhhhh.
“I did it” could also refer to Yato attacking Yukine with the way it’s laid out on the page. I hate it here.
anyway Yato got stabbed through his stomach, looks like, and since Kazuma seems to be taking the same injuries, he probably has that wound too.
WHO WANTS TO BET THAT INSANE AMOUNT OF PAIN WAS WHAT WOKE BISHAMON UP. WHO WANTS TO FUCKIGN BE T. I swear if she comes to them only for Kazuma to die in her arms I will scream so loud Adachitoka will hear it in Japan aND THEY WILL KNOW WHAT THEY DID
As stated, I have no idea what to make of Yato attacking Yukine. I really hope Kazuma was the one who did it, since Yato JUST said he refused to lay a hand against him and Kazuma has insisted fighting is the only way. And god knows we love blaming things on Kazuma. But then Yato’s eyes went blank, just like when he lost control and almost killed Bishamon. Plus he said “That tree is...” and most people have (I think rightfully) speculated that’s where he buried Yukine’s body, so naturally he’d want to protect it. But enough to draw his sword against him?
I don’t know but I assume they’ll explain it next chapter
how many times can I say “they’ll explain it next chapter” and then the manga fucking ends and I still don’t know jack shit I’m putting on my clown makeup as we speak
Either way, Yukine still thinks Yato attacked him. And either way, Yato will blame it on himself. they have a LOT of apologizing and therapy to go through once this arc is over
Yato dying right above Yukine’s final resting place is a horrible fucking turn of events and I really wish literally anything Else had happened
anyway. The question remains, where will Bishamon go? Will she be able to track Yato and Kazuma down based on his pain, and save them? Or will she join Ebisu and the others in their research? Or neither? Maybe she’ll get Nana to have a weapon?
I think Hiyori and Nora are heading to Yato anyway, so with any luck they’ll find him and be able to save him. Hiyori becoming a doctor shoutout? anyone?
Or maybe they’ll meet up with Bishamon there and help Yato and Kazuma while she tracks down the sorcerer. I don’t know that she’s in any condition to fight, but [honks my clown nose] we’ll see next chapter
90 is coming a bit early next month, the 3rd for me, and I can’t tell if that’s better or not. Rip the bandaid off early, but also. idk if I can take it. That remains to be seen.
Another thing that remains to be seen is whether this is the most painful chapter of the manga for me. Right now it feels like it’s on par with 71, but time will tell. Especially since 71 at least had Yato and Yukine being ride or die for each other, and this time it focused on the “die” part.
Father naming Yukine was the midpoint of the Nora arc (this arc) to me, so now I think we’re getting close to the end. I really don’t see what else there is to accomplish now that Yato’s gotten hurt so badly. Maybe he’ll be in better shape than we thought and still able to go after Yukine? He got roughed up pretty badly fighting Takemikazuchi in the last arc, and his neck got sliced open that time too. But it’s really hard to tell the extent of the damage from just one panel. Obviously he couldn’t chase after Yukine. Then again, he did also just get concussed.
Yato can you please go one damn arc without suffering grievous injuries this is bad for my heart.

The Invincible Swordsman
Phoenix Swordmsman and Book of Ruin: I've seen nothing about the timeline placement of this, but I've seen known sign of the Knight Forms, but Kento is here and so are the Wonder Combos, so safest bet seems to be right before Jaou Dragon happened. Bacht, wielder of Mumeiken Kyomu and the Eternal Phoenix Wonder Ride Book was sealed in a book in ages last, but is unsealed and creates portals to destroy the world. Seems to have Megiddo working with him but none of the regular villain's are involved. Bacht, Kamen Rider Falchion, apparently aims to reduce the world to nothing, Sword of Logos opposes him. The Brave Dragon joins with two others, the Love Dragon (White) and the Pride Dragon (Black) to for the Emotional Dragon Wonder Ride Book, and Saber uses Emotional Dragon to defeat Falchion. End scene is a brief teaser of our hooded man.
REALxTIME: So we have S, our lead villain, announcing he will end the world with bomb in 60 minutes and remake the world in his image, he has a large cult of followers, apparently he created the bomb using the Thousand Jacker. Among the followers are the 4 generals Bell, Moore, Lugo and Buga. Each of them, as well as the other followers, using either a Slash Abaddoriser or a Shot Abaddoriser, along with a Crowding Hopper Key become Kamen Rider Abaddon, the 4 generals having some small variation from the other followers. Aruto attempts to fight S, Kamen Rider Eden, using Zero-Two but is defeated and winds up in another world, S uses the Zero-Two Progress Key in the Thousand Jacker to create the Hell Rising Hopper Progrise Key, Izu later retrieves the Zero-Two Key and Zero-Two Driver. The Abaddon's are spreading a red gas that sends people to the other world, we get that scene of Jin, Horobi, Amatsu, Yua and Fuwa all fighting together. Aruto learns the woman he's met, Akane, knows S, and returns, attempting to fight Eden again using Metal Cluster Hooper. Apparently most of the enemies are AI controlled nanomachine constructs controlled by a few individuals using ZAIA Spec, these were meant to medical nanomachines but changed after some stuff with Ark towards the end of the series, Nanomachines make up the red mist. Horobi finds and confronts As, who has supplied Eden with the Hiden and others tech he needed, she otherwise isn't present. Is tries to find Aruto using Zea and manages to awaken to original Is somehow and they merge. Eden intends to use the Hell Rising Hopper Key to end the world, Aruto manages to take it off him, can't shut it down and is forced to use it to transform into Hell Rising Hopper. He is in a rage state and defeats S and tries to kill him but Zero-Two stops him, revealing themself as Is, Aruto calms down. Akane was S' wife, she died but her consciousness survived in the nanomachine AI, S wanted to make a world where he could be with her forever, placing his mind in a Humagear. Bell, after learning the real goal, takes the Eden Driver and Eden Key by force and becomes Kamen Rider Lucifer. Then we get Aruto as Zero-One and Is as Zero-Two facing Lucifer together, S shuts down this nanomachine system returning everyone to normal while Lucifer is defeated.
And that's Zero-One, at least until 01hers MetsubouJinrai.net comes out. But with what else was announced this week I wouldn't have counted on it being the end even if that hadn't been announced.
Z: It's important to remember with this first scene that Yuki Mai isn't actually a villain. There have definitely been examples of defence force members who count as villain's, the guy from Ginga S, or the ones from Ultraseven 1999 come to mind, but she is purely acting on the information she has, information that has been given to her by the actual villain, who we know was a trusted figure if authority. Hebikura finally reveals to the rest of STORAGE his identity as Juggler, but a younger Juggler would have just killed her and the 1st SAAG soldiers. As Destrudos rampages in LA, STORAGE prepares their mission, Haruki will pilot King Joe STORAGE Custom, while Hebikura uses Windom. He warns everyone to escape if they have to, GAFJ will almost certainly attack them. Wait Juggler what do you mean you can't grow big on your own anymore? You did last time we saw you before this, what's changed? King Joe and Windom give it their all, but they're outclassed by Destrudos, and when it looks like it's over Bako comes in with Sevengar to assist, the two manage to hold Destrudos long enough for King Joe to blow it open and attempt to pull Yoko out. So like this arm wrestling obviously is happening, but it isn't real or something, it pulls Yoko out of Celebro's control, and Celebro vanishes, leaving the Belial Medal in Yoko's hands. As she's ejected Haruki saves her by being able once more to use Delta Rise Claw, accepting he may die because of the strain, as Z warned. Beliarok returns to fight this new opponent. Destrudos regenerates the D4 cannon and fires, Beliarok absorbing the whole attack and thanks Haruki for the amusement, before destroying D4 and shattering, the feedback reverting Z to his Original State. With the encouragement of STORAGE he stands up, and with a tough battle defeats Destrudos with a Zestium Ray against the D4 Ray. Seems Haruki made it, but Z collapsed leaving. Hebikura catches up to Celebro and is going to kill it when Yuka and Kaburagi turn up and capture it, he leaves them to it. Haruki decides to go with Z to help people out in the universe. Beliarok, having reformed in space, decides to join them.
The Absolute Conspiracy: Moving to right around 1974, almost immediately after the end of Ultraman Taro, while continuing the Second Chapter we now focus on Ultraman Tregear in his Early Style (Existing VA), and some of this content was already relayed to us in the shirt story about Tregear that came out around when the Taiga movie was meant to. Tregear is working as a scientist at the Science Research Bureau under the Institute Director, Hikari (Still Origina VA), where he is working to develop a familiar item to borrow power from various life forms. Tregear looks down on himself for failing to make it into the Inter Galactic Defence Force, but Hikari encourages him to take pride in what he can do. He is reunited with Taro (New VA for his younger self), fresh from his time on earth. The showing here is abridged, but Taro is able to assist with finishing the device, and it is named the Taiga Spark. Some time later Hikari goes missing, and, in a new detail, Tregear goes to planet Arb to find him, where he is depressed after his failure to save Arb from Bogarl, and swears vengeance, for the first time becoming Hunter Knight Tsurugi, he attacks Tregear to stop him from getting in the way if pursuing revenge, leaving Tregear shocked even Hikari could not resist the darkness, and he hears Tartarus' voice. He discusses this with Taro, feeling resigned, and while Taro promises to protect him Tregear for the first time seems resentful of Taro, not just in awe. The pair go to Planet Deastar, where Taro seeks Tregear's help to investigate a strange energy. Suddenly Night Fang appears, brought by Tartarus, while it fights Taro it makes Tregear experience an illusion, where Hikari/Tsurugi draws him to the darkness, which he fears, but when Taro's illusion promises protection he rejects that too, then Tartarus offers him the chance to live as he desires, to fear nothing, and shows him his future, both his absorption of Grimdo and the conclusion of the fight with Taro in the beginning of Taiga, where despite everything Taro begged him to return. Taro uses Ultra Dynamite to destroy Night Fang, saying they'll always stand for the Light, but as Tregear leaves he rejects the idea of Light and Dark, Taro desperately calls after him.
Saber: Saber sees scenes that look like the past rush past him as he follows Caliber, while back at the battle the Megiddo claim only the one who obtains the truth will survive. Caliber tells Saber, and the Megiddo tell the others, that at the end of the gate is the Contents page of the original book, the only page that still remains, with it they would be able to find the other pages and remake the original book and reshape the world in their image. The Swordsmen intend to destroy the remaining pillars, which would prevent Saber returning. As Saber fight Caliber brings up the possibility of the world having already been changed from its original shape, before causing Saber to lose both swords and Touma vanishes into Kurayami's darkness. Mei encourages Rintaro to act, certain Touma will come back, while Touma, briefly despairing, is encouraged by Kento's spirit and manages to return to the swords and face Kamijo once more. Blades starts destroying pillars, while Kamijo explains 15 years ago. Hayato had been his best friend, until the day he betrayed them, when Kamijo confronted him he revealed Luna was a way to connect both worlds. Saber and Caliber fought, Caliber claiming this was to save the world. Luna was lost as Touma saw, and we see the last thing Touma remembered, with Brave Dragon flying into Touma's hand seemingly if it's own accord. When Hayato, enraged, yelled that this was the only way to save the world, Kamijo was forced to cut him down, but concluded the ones responsible for Hayato's corruptions were Sword of Logos, and so he decided to bear their sins even if he had to ally with the Megiddo. He believes obtaining the universal truth will allow him to identify the true enemy within Sword of Logos. Touma won't accept this, given all the people Caliber has sacrificed. As Blades continues destroying pillars, Saber uses Dragon Arthur, Crimson Dragon and Dragonic Knight. There's a Dragonback duel, ending in a Rider Kick struggle, which Saber wins, then uses a finish with both swords to defeat Kamijo, Kurayami, Jaaku Dragon and Jaou Dragon all fall. Kamijo accepts his loss, but beseeches Touma to find who betrayed Sword of Logos, saying he might be able to find Luna. Before he can say more he is stabbed through be Desast, who takes his own book back. Kamijo's last words are to beseech Touma to take Kurayami to help his quest, but suddenly both it and the books vanish. He returns just as the gate closes, greeted by everyone. And here's a reminder of Shindai Reika, going to tell us why you kidnapped Sophia any time soon?
Kenshin Retsuden: And finally for this series we have an episode of Blades, listed as Chapter 15.5. In the aftermath of everything Rintaro is depressed over Kento's death. Mei tries to cheer him up with eclairs and tries at the lottery, but even those won't excite him. We learn from flashback his lottery win was how he got the camera, and how he explained about how Sword of Logos as his family was instilled in him by his master. Rintaro feels weak, a failure, remembering his first fight with Zooous and how he felt, with Mei trying to calm him down after the fight, in the present she reminds him he saved her from Zooous, and protected Kento from Caliber, because he refused to give up. She tells him how Kento had said he wished he was as strong as Rintaro, and shows him Kento had used the camera to make sure there was a photo of himself for Rintaro. Rintaro has tears over the picture of his family, and finds his resolve.
Kiramager: Naturally the Crystalian holiday of Crystals is just a pastiche of Christmas, but the behaviour induced by Crunchula's rap causes the team to seriously hurt the Mashin, but the Mashin are also affected by the curse. Fire does make a point that they might still genuinely feel that way. The whole rap battle is just hilarious, I do like Yodonna's outfit choice. An all mecha roll call is a rare treat, last on I remember was Go-Onger, which also had an all Robo roll call. All the mecha getting a bit of spotlight like this is pretty common around this time of year, I remember Shinkenger doing it. Something is up with Yodonna.

Tokusatsu Streaming Guide: Where to Watch Kamen Rider, Ultraman, and More
https://ift.tt/2VR6eGr
Ten years ago a fan of Tokusatsu (Japanese special effects shows, mostly superheroes) could have never imagined the access we’d have to these programs today. Back then official releases of anything outside of the American adaptations, particularly Power Rangers, seemed like a far off dream. However in the past few years especially there’s been a slow trickle of Toku shows becoming available to stream in North America.
In the last few months though that trickle became a waterfall as several new services have quickly become mainstays, finally allowing Toku fandom to finally enjoy their favorite shows legally. This also allows more casual fans a chance to experience these shows for the first time and that’s who this guide is mostly for. If you’re curious about the wider world of Tokusatsu and need a place to start, this guide should cover your bases for the many kinds of Toku series out there.
Just as a note, we are only discussing shows that are legally available. This also isn’t a comprehensive list. Many of the streaming services mentioned below have multiple Toku series available, we’re just picking a small sample. With that in mind, let’s dive into this ocean of Toku, shall we?
Kamen Rider (1971)
Available on TokuSHOUTsu (Shout Factory TV/tubi/Pluto)
The release that shocked and delighted Toku fans, the original series in the long running Kamen Rider franchise may be old but that doesn’t detract from its enjoyment. This is Toku in its purest form. Incredible fights, trippy special effects, bizarre monsters, and a strikingly bleak backstory for the main character.
Hongo Takeshi is kidnapped by the evil Shocker and transformed against his will into a cyborg. Worrying if his humanity is intact, Hongo still fights for justice as Kamen Rider. It may seem simplistic in our modern age of superheroes but there’s something enduringly appealing about Hongo’s quest to stop evil despite the wrongs that were inflicted on him.
Plus, come on, you can’t beat those trumpets that come in for damn near every music number. Highly recommend if you’re down for old school heroics or just want to enjoy some trippy 70’s TV.
Zyuranger (1992)
Available on TokuSHOUTsu (Shout Factory TV/tubi/Pluto)
Many people reading this are no doubt aware of Power Rangers, especially the original Mighty Morphin series. If you want to rock your world, you gotta check out the Super Sentai series Zyuranger. It’s as far from MMPR as you can imagine, with a team of dinosaur-evolved humans from 170 million years ago brought into the present day.

TokuSHOUTsu: Kamen Rider, Ultraman, and Super Sentai Coming to Streaming
By Shamus Kelley
The differences between it and MMPR will be the main draw for most and as you watch the series you’ll be impressed just how much the producers of Power Rangers were able to take this footage and remold it for America.
Ultraman Mebius
Available on TOKU
You can’t do a list about Tokusatsu without giving love to one of the big three, Ultraman. While the franchise’s original series sadly isn’t streaming (but you’ll be able to soon), you can’t go wrong with the 40th anniversary season Ultraman Mebius. Following the adventures of the rookie Mebius, the Ultra comes to Earth and joins up with the attack team (hilariously out of context) named GUYS. Mebius, GUYS, and even a few characters from past Ultraman series, fight off giant monsters attacking Earth.

Marvel Reveals Ultraman Details
By Shamus Kelley
Both a great introduction for new fans and rewarding for long time Ultra fans, Mebius is a fantastic show to jump headfirst into the hero that’s larger than life.
Garo
Available on HiDive
If you want something off the beaten path of the big three Tokusatsu franchises, Garo might be right up your alley. Feeling a bit darker than other Toku (and not just because much of the action taking place at night or in darker spaces), the series follows Makai Knight Kouga Saezima attempting to protect humanity against the evil “Horrors.” Along the way though he encounters Kaoru, who is set to die in 100 days, and he sets out to try and save her.
Everything from the look of the series to the designs of the Garo suit feel different from Sentai, Kamen Rider, and Ultraman and if you aren’t feeling the more traditional vibe of those series Garo might be right up your alley. It’s also the first in a very long and surprising franchise so if you like it, there’s a lot more to get into.
Space Sheriff Gavan
Available on Toei Tokusatsu World Official
The first of the not as often remembered Metal Heroes franchise (although some of the series in it were adapted into VR Troopers and Beetleborgs), Gavan stands out for just how wild it is from the jump. Sure there’s the story about Don Horror (wonder if he’s a bad guy!) trying to destroy Earth and Retsu Ichijouji (Gavan) being sent out to stop him but that’s all icing on the cake.

American Tokusatsu Shows: Big Bad Beetleborgs
By Shamus Kelley
Metal Heroes have a reputation for bonkers visuals along with great action and Gavan delivers in spades. From the opening seconds of the first episode we’re greeted with Gavan standing atop a robot dragon standing against a gloriously lush background of outer space. Lead actor Kenji Ohba is also stunning in his action scenes and he puts even the superheroes of today to shame with just how good he is in these hand-to-hand fights.
Love action? Love weirdness? Want to be cool and not go with the obvious choices? Gavan might be for you!
Android Kikaider
Available on Toei Tokusatsu World
An absolute smash hit in Hawaii that’s still talked about to this day, Kikaider is more classic ’70s Toku action if Kamen Rider wasn’t enough for you. Following the heroics of robot Jiro against the (obviously) evil DARK, the main draw of the series is not just the delightfully over the top action but also the compelling conflict between Kikaider and evil robot Hakaider.
We should also mention that while the first two episodes of all series on Toei Tokusatsu World are subtitled, further episodes that will be uploaded won’t have them and it’s being left up to fans to subtitle the rest. Even without subtitles though, Kikaider’s action should more than keep your attention.
Dynaman (Night Flight Dub)
Available on Night Flight Plus
Easily the strangest entry on this list, Night Flight’s Dynaman isn’t just the seventh entry in the Super Sentai series. Oh no, it’s a little known dub of the show that aired on USA Network’s Night Flight program in the ’80s. It’s a gag dub through and through and mostly relies on pop culture jokes and (and we’re being generous here) outdated humor.
Still, it’s a peek into one of the earliest examples of Toku being brought to America on a large scale. For that alone it’s worth checking out, especially for those interested in the history of Toku in America and exploring the “what if” of imagining this getting popular instead of Power Rangers.
Gridman The Hyper Agent
Available on TOKU
Bold proclamation to make, but Gridman has the absolute best design of any Tokusatsu hero ever. It takes what worked well enough for Ultraman but added extra detail in all the right places to create a truly iconic look for a hero.
Gridman follows three hip computer kids (Naoto, Ippei, and Yuka) whose videogame superhero is taken over by the interdimensional Gridman who then combines with Naoto. The computer hero fights against the digital monsters of the evil Kahn Digifer in some of the best looking fights of all the series we’ve mentioned. Some shows might have better action overall but the look of the computerized world of Gridman can’t be beat.

SSSS. GRIDMAN Episode 1 Review: Awakening
By Shamus Kelley
The show may look familiar to some American fans as its footage was used in Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad. Gridaman also experienced a revival in the form of the SSSS.GRIDMAN anime, which redid some of the concepts of the original series with a few easter eggs to Syber-Squad for very hardcore fans.
Special Rescue Exceedraft
Available on Toei Tokusatsu World Official
Look, I’m going to be real with you. I’ve only seen the first two episodes of Exceedraft. I have no idea if the whole series is good. What I can tell you though is that the first episode is straight up the most batshit wild episode of any Toku I’ve ever seen. It’s like if someone took the plot of Speed and said:
“Aha, let’s do this but condense it down to 20 minutes, add in some shiny superheroes, and make it way more intense.” Also, the title of the episode is “The Kindergarten Bus of Death.” Just watch it. If you watch nothing else on this list, watch this episode. It’s Toku on, well, speed and it’s fantastic.
Jetman
Available on TokuSHOUTsu (Shout Factory TV/tubi/Pluto)
What if Super Sentai, but a soap opera? It’s not that Tokusatsu had never had soap opera elements before or after this series, but Jetman took that idea to a level that’s still being talked about today. When Red Ranger Ryuu’s partner is killed in an attack by the (say it with us now) evil Vyram, the powerful “Birdonic Waves” are unleashed on four unsuspecting civilians. Ryuu recruits them and they become the Jetman team.
With strong characterization from the start, Jetman stands out by jumping into the romance between team members as Ryuu struggles with his growing attraction to White Ranger Kaori. It’s standard soap opera stuff, with a love triangle thrown in for good measure (which would have been better if Kaori was given more agency), but if you love those tropes then Jetman might be the series for you.
As we said earlier, this is only a small sampling of some of the shows available on streaming sites in North America. What are some of your favorite Tokusatsu series that are available to watch and which ones do you hope are picked up in the future?

Precure Day 140
Episode: Futari wa Precure Splash Star 42 - “Welcome Back! Michiru and Kaoru!” Date watched: 3 July 2019 Original air date: 3 December 2006 Screenshots: https://imgur.com/a/xgCNJSJ Project info and master list of posts: http://tinyurl.com/PCDabout
The title kinda spoiled it
Another excellent episode! We left off with Saki and Mai in a bind because the Fairy Carafe was stolen and Dark Fall’s agents were revived and now more resistant to Precure’s attacks. Dark Fall holds all the cards and Saki and Mai are stranded in the Land of Fountains. It’s a good setup! Where do we go from here?
The Plot
Princess Filia reveals to the girls that the Fountain of the Sun is in the Land of Greenery and uses her own power to transport the girls, their fairies, and herself there... but she loses her corporeal form and ends up as a sphere of light that possesses Korone, Saki’s cat. Meanwhile in Dark Fall, Gohyaan has revived the rest of the generals, but Akudaikaan chews him out for not kidnapping the Princess when he had the chance, as she knows the location of the Fountain of the Sun, so Gohyaan dispatches Karehaan and Dorodoron to track her down.
This is the only time all 6 of these characters are together
Back at the Sky Tree, Filia explains that she needs the Fairy Carafe to return her body, but the villains appear before she can tell the girls more. Saki and Mai transform into Bloom and Egret but their power isn’t enough to defeat the enhanced warriors. Filia pointedly comments that the two spirits (Flappi and Choppi) alone aren’t enough, so she, Korone, Moop, and Foop gather their power and wish for a miracle. In a very emotional sequence, they connect with the slumbering Michiru and Kaoru, who receive the last remaining energy from the Fairy Carafe, and then revive and rush to the Sky Tree to save their friends. It’s a touching reunion, and some words are exchanged between both the sisters and their friends, as well as the villains who were eliminated before they changed sides. Ultimately, words aren’t enough, and Michiru and Kaoru fight Dorodorn and Karehaan.... and they’re winning! The power that Moop and Foop especially lent them, combined with their powers of darkness, are the perfect counter to the blend of dark and light that the villains possess, and the sisters are able to negate Gohyaan’s powerup (Dorodoron flees instead). This allows the Precures to perform Spiral Heart Splash and destroy Karehaan, who dissolves into a bunch of mini-Gohyaan heads that bounce off.
The four girls finally have a moment to take in their reunion, and Saki and Mai cry tears of happiness as the camera zooms out and the credits roll.
(speaking of the credits, stick around at the end for my take on Ganbalance de Dance finally)
The Analysis
What a great episode. I could probably write pages about Michiru and Kaoru’s revival scene, the dialog and music and visuals all come together to make an emotionally powerful sequence. Bloom and Egret are overpowered, Michi and Kao feel so helpless and they can’t move, but they can tell their friends are in danger and they struggle their hardest, so their feelings connect with the energy Filia is trying to send and create a miracle. I love it. Also, you can really tell that Nishio Daisuke worked on Dragon Ball prior to this series because the sequence of the two powering up and emerging from the water is EXTREMELY evocative of something DBZ would do. Joke’s on me, he only worked on FW and MH and had no hand in this series, he was tapped for Powerpuff Girls Z instead. Still very Dragon Ball, I wouldn’t be surprised of some of the other staff had their hands in that before working on this.
Karehaan proves to be his own worst enemy. He doesn’t like working together, believing he’s strong enough on his own to dispatch the girls. He does make a better team with Dorodoron than with Moerumba though, as they don’t butt heads so much as Doro just kind of goes along with that Karecchi says, until it’s in his best interests to run. However, Karehaan’s arrogance and ignorance about Michiru and Kaoru’s betrayal allow him to overestimate himself and the threat the sisters pose. Together with Dorodoron, they actually do have the Precures on the ropes at one point, they could have defeated them there, but they hesitated too long and allowed the Kiryuus to save them. Ah well.
Princess Filia posessing Korone is..... weird, to say the least. For some unexplained reason, beyond simply habitating in his body, her power allows him to speak as well, independently of her, so you have this tiny cat talking in a pretty deep voice. Not the first time an animated cat has talked, of course, but since it’s not Filia speaking through Korone, it’s odd. I don’t remember how long this lasts, presumably up until the finale of the show... in fact I must have blocked it out of my memory completely because I forgot about it happening at all. Korone was portrayed as an intelligent cat up to this point, of course, but now he’s standing on his hind legs and talking like a middle-aged guy and it’s all so strange.
Last thing I want to touch on: animation. It’s uh.... not great here. Close-ups are passable, although the shading is often minimal. The faces may be a little off-model but it’s nothing extreme. Anything further out than a close-up is pretty bad though, especially for human faces.
I guess it’s the usual conserving budget for the finale syndrome but it’s still pretty laughable.
The Opening and Ending
Okay it’s time I finally talked about these.
youtube
The opening theme is called “Makasete★Splash☆Star★” or “Leave it to Us★Splash☆Star★”. While the FW/MH opening was a drama, the SS opening is more of a poppy, light rock number. The composition features lots of strings, bowed and plucked at key moments providing both the melody and the bass line. Some high brass comes in here and there and I think there’s some kind of synthesized percussion providing the rhythm. It could be an electric guitar, though, I’m having trouble picking it out. There’s definitely some guitar towards the climax of the song. Mayumi Gojo has been swapped out for Uchiaye Yuka on vocals, and she sings about how there’s strength in life and to use that as inspiration. All together, it’s a nice uplifting tune, and the visuals give us a good idea about what Saki and Mai are interested in, the fairies, and some action sequences. There’s even a scene of the Tree of Life glowing with energy that might be foreshadowing the end of the series? For the revamped intro starting with episode 31, they add a few scenes of Bright and Windy, as well as Moop and Foop, and impressively they edited all shots of Boom and Egret to replace the Mix Communes with the Crystal Communes.
Now, the ending!
youtube
“Ganbalance de Dance” is a little bit notorious for being used, and reused, and re-reused. Yes 5 and GoGo both used reversions of it for their second ending themes, and I kind of get it, because it’s a cute tune, but there’s another more important aspect: this is the first dance ending in all of Precure. Why a dance ending? Well, there was a rather popular anime that aired in Spring of 2006 that featured a dance ending, and the world would never be the same. That show was “The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi” and the dance, the “Hare Hare Yukai” took the world by storm. It’s speculated that Precure adopting dance endings was a copycat move. The timing lines up, Haruhi started in April and ended in early July of that year so Toei had time to say “Hey this is really popular, let’s do that in our show.” Dance endings were already commonplace in the contemporary Super Sentai shows as well, so there was precedent. (although somewhat ironically, the Sentai of that year didn’t have a dance) Whatever the reason, they did it again and again but the cell animation was not always the best, so they switched to CG with Fresh and never looked back. However, we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.
The lyrics to “Ganbalance de Dance” are half instructions for doing the dance, and half general uplifting messages about positivity and believing in yourself. The dance itself is fairly simple, due to limited animation most of the movement is in the upper body, so the girls twist their torsos and extend their arms while keeping their legs mostly still. when they move their legs, it’s only to stick them out and then back in, or to do some small marching. None of the more energetic moving around that later shows will use, again, probably a byproduct of the animation. Notably, since it’s cell animation rather than more expensive CG, they draw the girls in all three of their outfits: school uniform, Bloom/Egret, and Bright/Windy. The villains also dance a little, and I should point out that the text behind them reads “Uzaina” with only one “a” at the end. Suffice to say, I understand but I’m sticking with two. Also look at these guys.
Kintolesky is not present because he hadn’t been introduced in the show yet, and sadly they never update it to include him. This also marked the first reappearance of Michiru and Kaoru, only to segue into a shot of Bright and Windy and then they’re never seen again, but hey, it’s something.
Anyway, it all comes together to make a fun ending song. I’m sorry it took me so long to write about it.
I may revisit this if I think of more things to say about the episode, but for now I think that concludes it. Next time, everybody celebrates Michiru and Kaoru’s return....... but first it’s time for We Are Splash Gays: The Movie. Look forward to it!

Part 1
A knock at the front door of his apartment drew Arata’s attention. Yuka was back in Japan tying up loose ends after the rebellion had ended and Imani and Callie were undoubtedly spending as much time as they could with Ichirou before he had to leave, so who could it have been? Maybe Ayo, needing to get away from the Nishimora head for a moment? It wouldn’t be the first time. Still, he couldn’t deny the small part inside him that hoped that it was Yuka back earlier than expected, it had been way too soon after they reunited after the rebellion’s end that she had to go away again, and though they talked over the phone as much as they could it couldn’t compare to having her there with him. His apartment, just as he had left it when they fled all that time ago, felt lonelier without her there. How did he manage the quiet before Yuka?
Another knock drew him from his thoughts and he made his way to the door, his hand twisting the knob and turning to open it as the figure that was revealed on the other side stopped him in his tracks. His already pale features whitened further as if he had seen a ghost, and in a way he had, one from his past.
“Arata,” Olivier Delacroix said simply in lieu of a greeting. A commanding air that drew all the attention in the room towards her, her immaculately cared for appearance, she looked the same as she did all those years ago save for the coldness that now resided within her eyes. He hadn’t known whether or not she survived the war on the Delacroix by the Moore family but as the years had passed she became nothing more than a figure from his past. Something from days long gone. Unfazed by his obvious surprise the heiress stepped inside, scanning briefly over the apartment before her eyes flickered back to him. “I will admit it’s a surprise to see you alive and well. I wasn’t sure whether or not to believe my intel.”
Arata gathered himself the best he could and shut the door, brows drawing together. “I could say the same for you, after all this time I was sure you were--”
“Dead?” A soft laugh leaves her. “Yes, well, I almost was on a few occasions. These past years I’ve been laying low, avoiding the Moore’s while gathering resources.” A flash traveled through her eyes at the mention of the Moore family, but as quickly as it had appeared, it vanished. “But you, to find you alive, I’m even more surprised.” Her voice was amicable, belied her intentions until suddenly her hands shot out and shoved Arata back into the door with a loud thud. He likely could have dodged it if he had wanted too, if he hadn’t been caught off guard the way he had been. “Considering that nearly everyone who was in that room day, including my uncle,” her fingers dug into his shoulders, “died, save for Alexander Moore and his elf lackey. So why is it, Arata, that you seemed to have escaped with your life while every single other person died?”
He blinked down at her, a glare appearing once he understood what she was insinuating. “Are you saying that I-- Olivier, my mom died that day too. Do you really have the nerve to suggest that I knew--”
“I have the nerve,” she cut him off with a hiss, “to be suspicious of your continued survival and apparently currently peaceful life despite being present during that day.”
“You really think I’d sell out my own mom to be free?!”
“Watch your tone.”
Anger blazed in his eyes. “I’m no longer under you.” Gritting his teeth, his fingers curled around the hem of his shirt and lifted it, displaying to her eyes two of the scars he’d received that day from the bullets. “And there’s a third on my right thigh. These weren’t there before and you know it, my mom shielded me that day and used her power with the hopes that I’d be able to escape. She protected me and lying under her corpse is how I woke afterwards! Curb your paranoia, Olivier, I knew nothing about what Alexander Moore planned to do that day.”
Her eyes rested on the scars, the flame of anger suddenly gone and quiet until a scoff left her lips. “Can you blame me for being suspicious? I’ve had to look over my shoulder constantly these past years, paranoia is what’s kept me alive. Trusted allies are few and far between and enemies are many.” A hand released his shoulder and her fingers fell to skim across the raised flesh of a scar, her warm palm coming to rest flat against his stomach as her gaze grew distant. “I barely know who I can trust.”
Arata slid from her grasp and away from the door as he fixed his shirt. “Why are you here, Olivier? I have a life now, a family,” his eyes met her and his next words were pointed, “a girlfriend. I’ve left that life behind and for good. I don’t know what you’re planning but I’m not interested.”
In an instant her gaze refocused, no longer filled with that brief moment of near vulnerability as she straightened. “So cold,” she chuckled lightly, “I’d hate to think that the years stole away that dashing charm of yours too, mon chéri. You weren’t nearly as cold back at the manor when we--”
“Olivier,” he warned. “You didn’t come here to reminisce. You’re stalling.” Which was very unlike her. “Why are you here?”
Finally, a sigh left the woman’s lips. “Fine. But I would rather you sit down first.”

[ Frozen Flames and Shadowed Lights || Chapter Six ] [ @yukaikokoro @abyssaldespair ] [ Hatake Kakashi, Kottakawa Kumiko ] [ Blood, gore, animal death ] [ Verse: Divine Light ] [ Previous || Next ]
After a night of fitful rest, Kakashi rises with the sun - even after a few months off from his life on the road, old habits die hard. With the same efficiency and care, he repacks his few removed belongings into his saddlebags, ready to haul them down from the inn room to the stable beyond. Today, it seems, his real journey begins. With Kumiko now joining him, and the first landmark left behind...the rest seems to loom before him, the trail she traced upon the map fresh in his mind.
Once Kumiko rises and does the same, they take their leave, thanks given to the innkeep as they cross to the stalls. Drawing up the cinch on his gelding, Kakashi can’t help a perked brow at his companion’s mount. “Quite the beast you’ve got,” he notes.
Glancing over, Kumiko gives a soft snort. “He’s rather fancy, isn’t he? It comes with the rank...and he’s the horse I’ve come to trust most. He bore me down here...so I’m sure he can make the return trip, and then some. The horses from the north are just as tough as everything else born above the snow lines.”
“I don’t doubt it. He’s a magnificent animal.”
“Thank you.” Kumiko nods to his own. “Something tells me you’ve quite the bond with yours as well.”
“Aye. I’d probably keel over if someone could tell me the miles we’ve covered together.” He gives the gelding a pat on the neck. “There’s few places he hasn’t taken me across the continent. He’s even helped with a few contracts.”
“Oh really?”
“Let’s just say he’s a lot less skittish than most equines you’d meet.”
Small talk over, the pair mount up, carefully navigating through the streets as not to trample anyone. Already the main roads are bustling, and it takes longer than Kakashi expected to finally make it back out onto the open road.
“So,” Kumiko then begins, reins held loosely in one hand. “Seeing as we’re to spend at least a few weeks together, is there anything I should know about the infamous vom berech?”
“...before I answer that, mind telling me what that means?” Berech he’s heard before, and he...vaguely knows the term’s meaning. “Suigin called me the same.”
“It’s, well…” A pause to think how to explain. “Berech is a bit of a catch-all term for those who are both el’tahl, and el’ven. Typically it’s attributed to halfbloods or quarterbloods, but the more literal translation from old tongue is ‘between’. Not much of the first language remains - when the lands were divided and cultures began to branch out, it was lost and splintered. Then Common was made of a mish-mash of many languages. But you can still find bits and pieces.”
“And the ‘vom’? What’s that mean?”
“It, er…” A hesitation. “It sort of means…‘something created from nothing’…? Or perhaps ‘created’ is enough. I think Suigin was referring to the fact that your ven comes from something originally outside your body.”
“Ah...that makes sense.” Kakashi heaves a small sigh. “...well, I suppose that ties into your question, so maybe I’ll loop back around to it, eh?”
“I don’t mean to pry - don’t think I’ll wrestle from you what you won’t want to tell.”
At that, he gives a dry smile. “Even if you tried, I’d doubt you’d succeed,” he assures her. Still, he lapses into silence, thinking where to begin. “...I was born in a large city in the old Igni lands. Both of my parents, to my knowledge, were simple el’tahl folks. My mother died when I was very young - I remember little of her. And my father was part of the city guard. He raised me for a few years, but took his own life after an incident that brought shame to the family.”
Kumiko’s eyes widen. “...I’m sorry.”
“...it was a long time ago. From there, I was taken into the barracks early and started training to follow his career. When I was young, I made a few el’ven friends. Rin was one, and...Obito was the other. The one who gave me this,” he adds, gesturing to his vermillion eye. “Rin’s family is mostly terra mages, but she branched out into flora, and worked in an apothecary shop raising plants and making medicines. Obito was berech igni, an orphan from a large clan that was like the ruling class of the city. The three of us were always running around, sticking our noses into trouble. And then, of course...there was the time it finally went wrong.
“We were outside the city a ways, looking for new specimens of plant for Rin to start cultivating, and then there was a ruckus nearby. Rin insisted we go look, and we found a group of mage hunters attacking a lux mage. Rin know what she was in a moment, and insisted we help. Where Rin went, Obito followed, so...we joined the fray. It was a fairly even struggle, but I got clipped in the eye by a blade. Things started going downhill, and then suddenly...they all vanished. Rin later theorized the mage used the rest of her strength to send them through time portals. But...she’d acted a little too late.”
Pain shadows Kakashi’s face, and Kumiko glances aside. “...Obito had been run through just as they disappeared. And with so little ven left, the lux mage couldn’t save him. So instead...she asked if he’d give me an eye to replace the one I’d lost. Obito agreed, and she managed to perform the transplant before she…” A fade to silence. “...Obito passed not long after. We buried her, having no idea what funeral rites lux mages’ culture entails. But we knew Obito’s clan would want him back.
“Before she died, the mage told us to take a ‘treasure’ she had hidden in the hollowed tree at the edge of the clearing. And that treasure...turned out to be Ryū.”
“What?! So...that woman was…?”
“Her mother. Rin and I took her with us...Rin reported Obito’s death to the igni mages, and they went to fetch him, cremate him as is their way. But I was afraid to stay in the city. I thought they’d see my eye, and assume I’d killed Obito to take it. After all...there were no hunter bodies - they’d all disappeared. All that was left was his corpse, and the signs of a struggle. And Rin had concerns about the igni clan getting their hands on Ryū. So...we fled. For a while we stuck to the road, and it was while traveling we found out Obito’s eye changed me enough to let me use some igni ven. It scared me, at first...so when Rin found a little village to hide Ryū in, I decided to leave. I didn’t want to bring them trouble, or hurt them on accident before I trained how to use my new power. Instead, I started doing contracts. Mostly killing pests...which led to beasts. I was making a decent living, and then...a few months ago, Rin found me and told me all Ryū was up to, trying to remake the Summit. So I came back, let her wrangle me into being her advisor, and...now, here we are. And here she’s not…”
“...we’re going to get her back,” Kumiko affirms, tone sure. “...I guess now I know why you were so distraught. She means more to you than I realized, like family...I’m sorry if I came across as aloof to that fact.”
Kakashi waves a hand. “No harm done.” A pause, and then a glance. “...so? What about you, lady Kumiko?”
Snorting at the title, Kumiko thinks for a moment. “I was born an only child to the main family within my clan: Tamotsu and Yuka Kottakawa. As ours is the strongest, we were chosen to act as leaders within the realm of Glaciris. That mantle fell to my father from his, and to me when the time came. But, while he has trained and groomed me to be his successor...he and I have vastly different ideals for our lands, and our people.”
There’s a light sigh. “...my father agrees with the old ways. Of being cold, and cut off from the rest of the continent. His pride holds us to a different standard, and insists we tend to our own affairs, and our affairs only. While he is content to rule at a distance...I cannot keep myself so far from my people.” A warm smile blooms across her face. “More than once, I snuck from the manor and wandered the city. I wanted to see the people and places I would come to lead. And that was...when…”
Kumiko’s features darken. “...when Nori was assigned to me. When my father realized there was no holding me back, he instead insisted I be protected when I went. But I would not stand for that. Instead, I had Nori train me how to fight...how to survive. While I had been trained in the beginnings of channeling ven, I wanted to know how to wield a blade. What if my element was taken from me? I had to have another skill to rely on. All of that, as I walked the streets of my city, made me realize...I would never be as my father is. As he wants me to be. He holds himself far and away from our people, but that is not a road I can take. I want to warm them to me, as I seek to warm them to the world. I want to inspire unity both within our lands, and beyond them. El’tahl and el’ven alike...I want them to trust me. To have faith in me. When they began approaching me on our walks, I knew it was my destiny.
“So, I doubled down on my studies. Threw myself into learning all I would need to know, and becoming embroiled in the politics of the north. And it was that dedication that saw me chosen as the representative of Glaciris for the new Summit.”
Kakashi watches as Kumiko smiles to herself - it’s more than clear her words are fully backed by actions and intentions. “...my people have much to learn, and far to go...but I will not give up on them. I will lead them to a brighter future.”
The hunter gives a curl of his own lips, chuckling. “It’s quite the sight to imagine, you learning your swordplay and butting heads with your father. True, a leader cannot be everywhere, cannot know everyone...but I think I prefer your method to his.” A thoughtful pause. “...I’ve never known anyone from the north well, so I’ve no judgment to make. But if your actions are half so strong as your words, I’ll wager you meet your goals.”
“I hope so, Kakashi.”
From there, their journey fades into a companionable silence broken by random quips. But with so many miles and hours to go, most pass with little interruption. The plains of the heartland soon overrun with trees, and the path lines with dense forest, shaded as the afternoon ages. For a time, the ride is pleasant...but the pair’s keen senses soon realize something is...amiss.
It’s quiet.
Too quiet.
Glancing to one another in a silent bid to be on guard, they both startle as a ruckus sounds a ways down the road. Both horses jolt, dancing in the dirt as their riders work to soothe them.
“Easy,” Kakashi murmurs, calming the gelding to a snorting standstill. Something sounded like...snapping wood? Almost as if a tree had fallen, but...there’s no wind. Nor any wagon tracks to suggest someone out to fell them.
“What do you suppose that was?” Kumiko asks quietly, reassuring her stallion as he huffs a breath.
“I can’t say for sure...but it stinks of trouble,” he replies, brow furrowing. “For now, I think it’s best we get off the road. Circle around to the other side and keep our eyes peeled.”
“Agreed.”
Dismounting, they instead lead their hoses to the left, abandoning the path and carefully stalking through the trees. The tall trunks and broad canopies mean little light for undergrowth. Nice in that it makes it easier to see...but also to be seen.
A few minutes of silence eventually give way to growing noise. Another silent agreement, the pair tethering their horses in a thicket before creeping onward alone. Peering around a turn in the road from behind a fallen log, they both tense at what they see.
A wagon, goods splayed all over the road, is completely overturned. Nearby, an ox lies dead, neck clearly broken. The other is still tethered to the cart...and atop it, tearing into flesh with a wicked beak...is a gryphon.
“Twelve above,” Kumiko whispers.
“Guess that explains the noise we heard…what in the hells is it doing so close to town…?”
“...wait…” Patting Kakashi’s arm, she points. “...look!”
Cowering under the splintered wreckage of his cart, the driver is somehow still alive, currently unnoticed as the beast occupies itself with his livestock.
“...well I’ll be damned.”
“We have to do something!”
Sighing curtly, Kakashi nods. “...all right...can you create an ice wall?”
“A small one, probably. There should be enough moisture for me to draw from.”
“Good...when I give the signal, make a wall between the gryph and the cart. Use that to get him out of there, and back here into the trees. With those wings and that bulk, the gryphon won’t want to follow. I’ll be a distraction.”
“Will you kill it?”
Kakashi considers the wreckage. “...the cart’s not worth saving, and the oxen will spoil before they can be used. I doubt much of his merchandise is whole, either. I could just leave it to finish up the mess, but…” He drags a hand down his face. “...it’s too close to town. And now that it knows it can find easy prey on the road, it’ll just strike again.”
“...can you kill it?”
“Only one way to find out.” Before she can argue, he vaults over the log and heads toward the road, posture crouched and pace quick.
Swearing lightly under her breath, Kumiko follows, remaining hidden behind a trunk and awaiting Kakashi’s signal.
Making it to the cart, Kakashi taps the driver, who flinches with a yelp. Slapping a hand over his face, the hunter makes a curt gesture for silence.
Above them, the creature pauses...and then returns to its feast.
“My companion will come for you,” Kakashi whispers. “When she does, follow her back into the trees, and stay down. I’ll take care of the beast.”
“Oh, Twelve bless you sir - bless you!”
Sighing at the unnecessary noise, Kakashi peeks around, then waves back to Kumiko.
In a sprint, she gestures to the path before her. Water condenses from the air and the nearby forest, cooling at her urging and forming an icy barricade.
Squawking, the gryphon flutters in surprise as Kakashi runs out the other side.
“Oi! This way, bird brain!” he calls, sending a stream of fire from a palm into the creature’s face.
A shrill shriek cuts through the air, rattling Kakashi’s brain with the sound. Teeth grit, he watches Kumiko reach the cart, dragging out the driver and dashing back for cover.
Okay, good…
Summoning more ven, he directs dual jets to the wagon, the dried wood catching like tinder. Smoke billows up from the wreckage, and the beast shies from it with an angry cry.
Drawing his sword with a twirl, Kakashi squares off against his new quarry. Seems to be a young male, juvenile...not as big or strong as an adult, but more limber, and faster. No wonder he took an easy meal where he could. Odds are, he’s been having trouble hunting regular prey on his own. Also why he’s so close to town: likely driven out of any other established territories.
“Sorry friend, but you’re too dangerous to leave here,” Kakashi murmurs, watching as the beast crouches with a hiss. Bird talons dig into the dirt for a steadying grip...and then with a lunge, it leaps across the gap, beak wide open.
Tucking and rolling to one side, Kakashi makes to loose more flames...but the element sparks and flickers. What?! Out already?! But I -?
A screech gives him just enough warning to dodge again, trying to land a hit with his flailing blade. It grazes along a rear leg, blood arcing as the gryphon screams. Hardly deadly, but...it might slow it down.
Beyond the treeline, Kumiko settles the cart driver in their previous hiding place. “Stay here, don’t move, and don’t make any sound.” Accepting his shaking nod, she turns on a heel and sprints back to the road, watching as Kakashi dances with his foe. The cart is aflame, belching black smoke as the pair strike and dodge. Assessing the situation, her eyes narrow as she notices Kakashi seem to lag.
...he didn’t instruct for her to interfere, but…
Determined, she closes some of the distance before kneeling, palms planted to the ground. Ven bleeds into the earth, looking for something…
Aha!
With a growing roar, she struggles to drag up the water from beneath the ground, the liquid seeping up and following her command. As the gryphon moves her way, she begins firing shards of ice. The sharp projectiles earn a shriek as they cut through feathers and into flesh, garnering the beast’s attention to her, instead.
“Kumiko!” Kakashi shouts in warning.
Unphased, she slides under as the monster pounces, water shadowing her arms and rippling. Almost as if time slows, she raises her limbs as the hybrid’s underbelly glides over her...and with a thrust of energy, the element strikes forward, hardening into condensed ice that spears through into its abdomen.
A strangled cry of pain sounds, the beast landing in a heap as Kumiko comes to a stop. Panting, she struggles back to her feet...but it’s clear the fight is over.
Kakashi stares with widened, mismatched eyes.
...he...was not expecting that.
“...we should end its misery,” she then murmurs, wiping the sweat from her brow.
“...aye.” Closing the gap, Kakashi - wary of the talons - drives his blade up behind a foreleg, and into the beast’s heart. It gives a dying bleat of pain...and then goes limp.
Silence...save for the crackling of cart wood.
Withdrawing his sword, Kakashi cleans the gore from it before sheathing it, looking to the beast somberly. “Well...a life for a life, I suppose.”
“You were right - it’s far too close to town. Just a matter of time before a human fell prey,” Kumiko agrees, a hand upon his shoulder. “But...what shall we do with the driver? He has no way to the next city without his wagon.”
“And we’ve no time to backtrack,” the hunter muses. “I’d rather not take him with us for a week to the town beyond, either.”
“My...my good sir? And lady?”
The pair turn, and Kumiko’s expression flattens. “I told you to remain where I left you!”
Flinching, the salesman replies, “I...yes - I-I know. But I heard things go quiet, so…?”
“It’s dead,” Kakashi confirms, sensing his question. “You’re safe...though your goods are forfeit.”
“That’s no matter in the face of my life! You have my eternal thanks, good people. I...I have no coin on my person, but -?”
Kakashi shakes his head, raising a hand. “I wasn’t hired. There’s no price. Besides...it needed to be done.”
“Please, may...may I have your names?”
“Kakashi Hatake. And the lady is Kumiko Kottakawa.”
Bowing and bowing, the man finally dares to step into the road, skirting the carcass nervously. “Please, I hail from the town just south. If you should ever pass by again, seek out the Oakheart Trader! I’ll gladly settle the debt then! I insist!”
“It will be some weeks before we head that direction again,” Kumiko warns. “But your honor is appreciated. I’m afraid we’ve pressing business - we cannot take you back to town…?”
“Oh, fret not! I passed a patrol on my way out - they will surely soon about-face and find me, for I doubt the smoke will go unnoticed for long. I’m certain there will be help before sundown! You have done more than enough, kind sir and lady. Thank you, thank you!”
A bit unnerved at the praise, Kakashi just gives an awkward nod...then reaches to his side, unbuckling the dagger he took from the Luxerian armory. “Here. It may not save you from a beast of this ilk, but...I’ll not leave you undefended. And it should sell for some to help amend for your losses.”
Eyes wide at the pristine dagger, the man only becomes all the more reverent. “Your generosity, sir...it knows no bounds…!”
Trying to wave him off, Kakashi offers, “Stay in the treeline, and with your back to a tree. Wait for that patrol, and be sure to report all you saw.”
“I will, thank you! Safe travels, lord and lady!”
As the pair move to retrieve their horses, Kumiko gives a small snicker. “I think you’ve an adoring fan, Kakashi. Something tells me if you ever enter that shop, he’ll never let you leave!”
“Best leave that to you, then...after all, you were the one to strike the deciding blow.”
She waves the sentiment aside. “We worked together. Call it even.”
“As you wish.”
Aaand with that, we officially enter non-thread territory! We started this scene, but Kakashi bailed on me and blog stuff changed before it finished. I am...NOT the best at fight scenes, obviously xD Tbh it feels a little short, but...oh well. It’s mostly just a filler fight and an event for these two to bond a bit more!

My Persona
Here we go. It’s here, guys. I finally finished this strange mini-fan project. So the idea was to make a protagonist of the Persona series based on myself, plus a team roster. I felt like drawing some basic things to go with my writing.
Everything is under a cut but guys- guys- guys- I want to see other people’s ideas and stuff too! What would a protag based on *you* be like? Your world? Your shadow, your velvet room? How about what your persona/ultimate persona would be? Write or draw or whatever you do best and tell me or tag me or w/e because I think this is just the coolest idea! (Also if you have questions about this world I’ve built or it’s characters, I encourage you to ask me questions!!! I would love that!!! also reblogs super appreciated so more people can know about this and possibly get in on it?)
The Velvet Room And Surrounding World
The theme of this “game” is mystery, illusions and the performances we as individuals put on for other people.
There would probably be a significant part of the plot relating to investigating local mysteries and folklore when people start claiming to experience supernatural events related to local folklore. When bodies start turning up, the police get involved.
The Velvet Room is a falling-apart theater. The protagonist would first wake up directly in the middle of the seating with a ticket in her hands. (also this is a REALLY rough sketch of what I think the theater would look like, references here and here. In my head it would be a lot of torn out seats and debris).
The assistant of the new Velvet Room is Hugo. He has a beautiful singing voice, lighting up the stage in charisma and light. Off stage he’s aloof, preferring to conduct business over chit-chat. Sees himself as a caged song-bird.
The “mascot” character would probably be something related to a fox or an owl considering the mysterious/mystical aspects of this world.
Onto the main characters of this story-
My Shadow, My Persona, And I
First of all, disclaimer: when I say this Persona is based on me, I’m not a high schooler and I’m going into this with a LOT more introspection than I had as an actual 17 year old.
So the protagonist is based on me. If you don’t know me, I’m basically a dorky bundle of anxiety who really likes video games and comic books. I have struggle(d) with depression for a good part of my life which I’m now medicated for (yay college counselors). Also I have autism, something that gives me many issues in socialization as well as weird memory for random facts.
Okay. Here we go. The hard part of writing your own shadow is being incredibly honest with yourself. The shadow for the protagonist is in the form of a doll, a child that was to always been seen and not heard. To step out of place was to be shoved back into position or hidden out of sight of other adults. When I was actually 17, my parents had divorced and my father was no longer going to live with us. After years of abuse, I was coming to realizations about myself, a big thing being how years of emotional and psychological abuse had shaped my behaviors and attitudes. He was gone but I couldn’t just escape what he had done. I was “ruined” forever. It made me angry and extremely depressed which made me lash out at people. Hence, the face of the doll and the broken mask on the ground. It was all intertwined with the fear that I was going to become just like him. There was a lot of suicidal ideation and self-harm in this time period, including cutting up my knuckles with a razor. I don’t struggle with this like I used to, but it would be a lie to say that it doesn’t still affect me.
Going along with the doll theme, the dungeon or area of the protagonist would be an old fashioned doll-house. Traditionally since the protag wouldn’t have a dungeon and shadow, it would probably be a very short route.
The base persona would be based off of Red Riding Hood. A girl who is fooled by a wolf while delivering goods to her grandmother’s. While she picks flowers, the wolf goes to grandmother’s house and devours the old woman. Once Red finally arrives she, too, is devoured. They are both saved by the Woodsman who cuts them from the wolf’s stomach.
The ultimate persona of the protagonist would be Eos, the goddess of dawn. To me this choice is also symbolic for new beginnings and that you can grow as a person with each day through the choices you make. I love sunflowers, so of course I had to throw a couple in there.
Team Roster
User Note: I’m adding a couple quotes for all of them, including brief romance ones considering in *my* game you would totally be able to romance both genders.
Mia
Musical Theater star of the school. Because of this she’s rather popular and well-respected amongst her peers and teachers.
Very verbose from reading script after script after script in her down time. Will talk you to death.
Outside of school her clothes would be casual, but rather fashionable. An extreme opposite to Audrey’s “I woke up like this and put on the loudest t-shirt I could find” look.
For way too long in her life, Mia has been used by other people for various reasons- her talent, her looks and even for popularity reasons. Because of this she’s incredibly wary of people trying to get close to her. Extremely disdainful of shallow people and hollow compliments. Combined with the wary nature, she can come off cold and extremely rude when in reality she can be incredibly loyal and kind of a dork.
Once Mia gets to know Yuka, Mia would 100% walk up to anyone being a bully as they were talking to Yuka and go “Hello Yuka, my best friend, light of my life- Are these girls bothering you??” and use her popularity to get others to back off.
Her shadow is based on negative feelings about other people sucking up to her. Shadow Mia would be one of those glitzy theater divas telling the poor girl how she secretly loves all the attention and that “it’s not like you actually have a personality, anyways. If you REALLY hated all the attention, you wouldn’t do theater anymore.”
Her persona would be called Daae and would be based on the fictional opera singer Christine Daae from Phantom of the Opera. She is the female protagonist and object of affection of the titular Phantom, Erik. In the novel, she’s an incredibly tough-spirited individual, sending away her love Raoul to protect him and at some point even bashing her head on a stone wall to "escape” her imprisonment by the titular Phantom, Erik.
Quotes-
“I’m Mia. You’ve probably seen me on a couple posters around the school. They uh... really like putting them around everywhere, don’t they?”
(After relationship growth) “People just want to use you for whatever they can... It makes it hard to trust anyone. You’re probably one of the few people I feel so at ease with. Thank you for that.”
(Romance reaction) “Uh... I mean- I... I’ve never met anyone like you. I feel like I could tell you anything. To be honest, I’ve had certain feelings towards you too but I thought... I didn’t want to mess up our friendship. I’m glad that’s not a worry now.”
Yuka
Loves flowers, kittens, puppies- you name it. If it’s even mildly adorable, this girl probably thinks it’s the bee’s knees. Her clothes outside of school reflect this with funny slogans or cute patterns.
She has a lot of physical strength due to lifting weights and helping around at her family's restaurant. Probably can lift you.
Her family’s restaurant is considered a local treasure with the best cooking. She loves the work and would consider it an honor to run the place one day.
Gets bullied OFTEN because of her weight. She pretty much grins and bears it because she doesn’t want to fight with anyone or accidentally hurt another person due to her strength.
Her shadow is connected to the bullying and how she deals with it. Shadow Yuka is probably a punk/tough girl who says Yuka WISHES she had the guts to physically fight back with her bullies with no repercussions. After the experience, Yuka realizes that she needs to verbally stand up for herself and that it won’t make her as bad/worse than the bullies.
Yuka’s Persona is most likely Freyja, the Scandinavian Goddess of Love and War (amongst other things). Fun fact: Freyja is usually in a chariot pulled by cats.
Quotes-
“Oh hello, you’re the new girl. I’m Yuka! I know meeting new people can be scary but... Let’s be friends, okay?”
(After relationship growth) “I like who I am! But... I also don’t, you know what I mean? And it’s not because I’m fat or whatever. That kind of stuff doesn’t matter. I want to be someone people can depend on. With all of you guys, I feel like I can make a difference. Even if I’m scared, even if I feel like I’m not good enough, we can do this together!”
(romance reaction) “Really? I was hoping you’d say that but then I thought maybe I’d watched too many romcoms, you know? I think you’re really cute and nice and... (this goes on for several hours as she compliments you and admits feelings for you).”
Audrey
Plays games like it’s the air she breathes. To the point of it being a distraction from schoolwork and relationships.
Outside of school, she would probably wear obnoxious, bright colors. Generally, she’s very goofy and jokes around a lot.
Anyone tries to mess with you? This girl suddenly has a razor-sharp tongue and is very perceptive to a person’s flaws.
Lives with her uncle, a young and kind of hopeless guy who took her in after years of abuse by her parents was revealed to authorities. Her uncle feels a lot of guilt for not stopping things sooner.
A lot of her character development would involve encouraging her to get counseling for her trauma as well as realize she’s not a burden to her uncle or her friends. The protag and other characters have the choice to aid Audrey to get her grades up.
Her shadow is a result of negativity surrounding her current coping mechanism: escaping through media and video games. The shadow is most likely dressed as a stereotypical rpg character, mocking her that all she’ll ever have is fictional characters because she can’t let go of the past. As a result, Audrey realizes she needs balance between the hobbies that make her happy, and taking her future seriously.
Her persona is Rapunzel, a little girl taken by an evil witch after her father stole from the witch's garden. The girl was so beautiful she was locked into a tower so she could not leave. Many modern adaptations interpret this relationship in detail as emotional and even physical abuse. In a way this also represents Audrey wishing that her parents were not “her real parents.”
Quotes-
“Hey. The name’s Audrey. You like video games? I have some of the newest stuff and an extra controller!”
(After relationship growth) “I got another F on a test. My uncle is gonna be pissed. It’s hard enough he had to take me in because of family issues. My parents- How do I say this? They're really bad people. It’s easier to just... play more games than it is to think about the stuff they did to me. But when I play more games I tend to ignore other stuff too...”
(Romance Reaction) “Well, duh of course you like me, (laughter). I’m amazing! ...Wait. You’re serious? (protag name)... Not sure why you’d want to deal with me but... Never knew I’d get a player two.”
Connor
Will jokingly call the protagonist “boss” at first. Over time and after earning his respect, the nickname becomes somewhat-serious.
He has a love for romance and is a hopeless flirt. If you were to flirt back, however, he would be an incredibly flustered mess. After they get to know each other, he and Yuka would totally swap romance recommendations.
Is generally a huge dork, sometimes getting over-excited to see his friends or even people he’s slightly fond over. This can lead to awkward moments with any possible crushes.
He can be unintentionally very intimidating due to his height and body type which is basically solid wall of muscle. Will get emotional and sad when this happens, HOWEVER, will use it to his advantage if someone is messing with him or his friends.
Because of his appearance and, at times, goofy awkward nature, he deeply fears never finding someone who cares about him, hence the act of being a flirt. This especially hits him as someone whose brothers never had problems finding dates in high school and are all married now.
His shadow is a casanova kind of character that flirts with anyone they come across. He promises “I’ll be whatever kind of man you want me to be! It’s not like you’d like me any other way, right?” He’s desperate and shameless in how he gets attention. Acts dickish/almost stalker-ish creepy if you reject him.
His persona is The Hatter based on the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland. Lives on permanent tea-time to avoid decapitation by the queen. Throws the mad tea party with the March Hare. Likes to talk in riddles.
Quotes-
“Hey, beautiful. I’m Connor. Or I guess you could call me ‘your future boyfriend.’ You look like someone who likes being in charge. I like that. I’ll just call you Boss.”
(After relationship growth) “I hope I didn’t make you uncomfortable when we first met. You’re a really amazing person and I respect you a lot! My brother’s are all really good with being charming and I guess I felt like... I needed to be the same if I wanted people to like me. But just being me I’ve made all these friends. It’s cheesy but I’d do anything for you guys and I know you’d do anything for me. It’s best feeling in the world.”
(Romance Reaction) “I know we’ve flirted before, but I thought you were just joking around with me. You know me, I mean you saw that really embarrassing part of me and you still like me? You really are one of a kind, Boss.”
Kai
Way too vain and cocky for his own good. Kind of needs to be knocked down a few pegs. Besides that, he genuinely wants other people to do well and will cheer them on in his own way.
His casual wear still probably costs a fortune, even if it doesn’t look like it.
While he doesn’t always recognize how well-off he is, he’s more than willing to share the things he has with others. If he thought it was something they would enjoy, he would arrange some kind of weird field trip for the team to all to hang out on.
Comes from an extremely prestigious family and there is significant pressure to be the best at everything. Because of this, he has a panic-inducing fear of failure. A lot of his character development would involve accepting he isn’t perfect and that’s ok.
His shadow reflects the fear that he will never be good enough- that his fate is always to fail the expectations of others. Kai’s Shadow would dress like some kind of a punk or rebel, reflecting his at times bitter feelings towards his relatives for placing all this pressure upon him. “If I’m already a fuck up, why even try pleasing them?”
His Persona is Gray, based on the titular character from The Picture of Dorian Gray. Dorian Gray in the novel is a narcissistic young man who becomes infatuated with extreme hedonism and wishes for a picture painted of him to age rather than him. His wish comes true, reflecting not only his age but the darkness inside of him.
Quotes-
“Hello there. I haven’t seen you around here before. My name is Kai. If you ever need help around this school, come find me. I have many connections at my disposal.”
(After Relationship Growth) “Everyone in my family has reached a peak that could almost be considered perfection. It’s expected that I’m to reach those standards as well. We don’t make mistakes. But to err is human, correct? When I mess up, you’re right there to tell me it’s okay. And I feel normal. And at the same time like I could do anything. Isn’t that funny? I’ll go where my path takes me and even if it’s not where my family wants... I know you’ll be cheering me on. That’s better than any fancy award.”
(Romantic Reaction) “I promise we’ll take care of each other. Despite what you may think, you’re perfect. I’ll cherish you the way you deserve.”
Lucas
The mysterious writer of the Ghost Blogs, keeping detailed records of the murders, accidents and seemingly supernatural events in town. Who is he? A detective from out of town? A stalker watching the police’s every move? A possible suspect for the cause of these events? Nah, just a dork in a beanie with cat ears who really likes ghost stories.
Very observant about other people. Sometimes too observant to the point of being blunt and even insulting.
One reason he stays so on top of the recent findings is a police scanner he keeps in his bedroom and listens to all the time. He even keeps a list of different codes on his wall so he’ll understand everything.
His younger sister died in a drowning accident while swimming in river. They used to tell ghost stories to one another late into the night under the covers.
His shadow represents his guilt for not being able to stop the death of his sister when they were children. He resembles an old-fashioned cemetery caretaker that would guard or protect graves from body-snatching, as well as check old fashioned grave bells to see if the person was buried prematurely. His shadow would admonish him for clinging to ghost stories in some vain hope that he could see his sister again.
His persona is The Raven from the story of the same name by Edgar Allen Poe. It’s one of the most famous of Poe’s works. The author himself is considered by many to be the epitome of horror and dread. Ravens in mythology can represent good luck, death, or wisdom depending on the origin of the story.
Quotes-
“Heeeeeey. I’m um- I’m Lucas. I guess you found me. I run the Ghost Blogs. Nice to meet you.”
(After relationship grows) “I was supposed to be watching her. I looked away for just one second and the river swallowed her up. That was it. But now that I’ve talked about this, faced myself or whatever you want to call it- I was just a kid, too. It’s not like I knew any better about those waters. It’s hard to accept but thinking on it, I don’t think there was anything I could do to change what happened, even if I went back to that exact moment. I still miss her. But I have to let go of this guilt. Thank you for being here for me. It means a lot.”
(Romantic Reaction) “I’d say ‘no you don’t’ but I can’t mistake that look on you. It’s really cute, actually. You’re really cute. I guess saying it out loud now is okay (laugh). If you’d told me when this whole thing started that chasing ghost stories would lead me here, I’d say you were lying. Good thing I would’ve been wrong.”

#8 from prompt list #2, with Kylo Ren please?
8. “There’s only one bed.”
Staying in a small, rundown inn on an ice-planet was hardly a vacation for (Y/n). The mission itself wasn’t meant to be a holiday, just another run of the mill assassination.
Time away from Star Killer Base was always blissful for (Y/n). It was quiet and she was free to do whatever she pleased, so long as she took out her quarry before her deadline.
The only difference between this mission and the rest was her reluctant travel partner.
Kylo Ren, much to his displeasure, was dispatched to the planet to assist with the assassination. His reason for accompanying her was a mystery to the both of them.
A certain redheaded general made the decision that Ren needed more time in the field. The general probably had issues to attend to that he didn’t want Ren interfering with.
The two hadn’t said a word the whole flight to their destination, Yuka.
(Y/n) had of course heard of Kylo Ren, and vice versa. She was one of the most renowned assassins in the First Order. Maybe it was because she was top of her class at the Academy, or because she had one of the highest body counts in the history of the First Order.
Just because they had sterling reputations didn’t mean they were required to make conversation with each other. It was obvious they both didn’t want to be there.
A few minutes out from Yuka, (Y/n) finally spoke up, not taking her eyes off the planet ahead.
“We’ll have to leave the ship a ways away from town. Since we left later than planned we may be stuck in the blizzard we were hoping to avoid…”
(Y/n) glanced at Kylo Ren, noticing he was still sporting his black robes and chrome helmet.
“We’ll have to pose as a couple once we get to town, to get rid of any suspicion… You’ll also have to change.”
Kylo didn’t say a word as he turned and exited the cockpit, presumably to change his clothing.
(Y/n) had to admit, the thought of seeing the infamous knight without his mask had made her anxious. Hardly anyone knew what he hid underneath the chrome and the apparatuses.
Maybe he was scarred horribly, or he was missing an eye. Or maybe he wore it to conceal his true age, he could be ancient for all she knew.
Kylo Ren soon returned to the cockpit, his footsteps quiet compared to how they sounded in those heavy boots he always wore.
Curiosity got the better of (Y/n) and she glanced at him, freezing in place once she saw him.
Thick black hair, beauty marks dotting his otherwise flawless skin, perfect plump lips. Eyes so intense she could feel nothing and everything all at once when they locked with hers.
A sudden alarm from the console snapped her back into reality, drawing her attention back to piloting the ship. She had been caught staring at him and he damn well knew it. The situation was too much to handle, there was no way it could get any worse.
“I can hear your thoughts, assassin…”
It got worse.
From then on (Y/n) attempted to keep her thoughts clear as she struggled to keep herself from sneaking glances at Ren. Every so often she’d catch him smirking to himself or she’d here him chuckle. It drove her crazy and he knew it.
Convincing a local innkeeper that the two were a couple was easy, “Visiting family” was their excuse. The fact that Kylo and (Y/n) had just emerged from a blizzard also had him eager to get them into a room with a fireplace as soon as possible.
The innkeeper was kind enough to help Kylo and (Y/n) carry their “luggage” upstairs. (Y/n) silently prayed that he wouldn’t jostle any of the cases too hard.
While (Y/n) thanked the innkeeper for his assistance, Ren entered the room, freezing in his tracks when he noticed the singular bed against the wall farthest from them.
The door shut, prompting Ren to groan in frustration, his face turning a light shade of red in what (Y/n) assumed to be anger.
“There’s only one bed…” he pointed out, earning a deadpan look from the assassin beside him.
“Yes, I can see that, sir.” the sarcasm in her voice had Kylo glaring down at her, making the small room feel all the more colder.
“Well,” she added, attempting to save herself from certain death, “We did tell him we were a couple. And it is best to lay beside someone for warmth.”
Kylo only shook his head and approached the bed, setting his large bag down beside it. (Y/n) followed his lead, moving to the opposite side of the bed.
She turned her back to him and began undressing, catching the attention of her bedmate. He couldn’t help but stare at her now exposed skin, he only stopped when she tugged on a black tank top and a pair of First Order regulated sweat pants.
(Y/n) crawled into the bed and pulled the covers over her body, noticing how Kylo only stood there, staring.
“In the academy we had no separate rooms, changing in front of others without shame is a skill I picked up rather fast.” She explained, offering him a small smile.
Without a word Kylo turned around and slowly undressed, revealing the vast expanse of his body to her. More beauty marks dotted his skin, making (Y/n) smile softly. This was a sight she hadn’t expected, under all the robes and the mask he was still just a man.
Ren laid beside (Y/n) and faced her, sending a shiver down her spine. His eyes, those dark, intense eyes, bore into her. The look in his eyes urged her to speak, but as she parted her lips, no sound came out.
Finally, Kylo Ren broke the silence.
“Why did you stare at me? Earlier, on the ship…”
(Y/n) blinked, not expecting that from him. His tone was what caught her off guard more than anything.
He sounded so confused. So Insecure.
“I wasn’t expecting to see a man under that mask…I was surprised.” she explained, watching his jaw clench in response.
“Then you were expecting a monster? Some misshapen beast?” His voice cracked from all the emotions running through him, but each and every one was silenced when (Y/n) moved closer to him.
“I didn’t know what to expect… But I know I wasn’t expecting to see something so perfect…”
(Y/n) didn’t realize how close she was until a small sigh left Kylo’s parted lips, the puff of air fanning against her skin.
The feeling of fingers ghosting over (Y/n)’s exposed waist sent sparks throughout her body.
She watched through half-lidded eyes as Ren gently gripped her sides and pulled her flush against his body.
No more words were exchanged between the two as they nodded off, their lips painted with soft smiles.
