Fic-Writer Interview
Not tagged but picked up from @mercurygray :)
How many works do you have on AO3?
261!
What’s your total AO3 word count?
1,762,015!
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Affinity War (3182)
3 Simple Rules for Dating a Centenarian (2688)
The Great Madripoorian Snake Off (2245)
"Stare Enough" (1843)
Alright on Paper (1463)
Picture a t-shirt bearing the exhausted Ben Affleck smoking meme and the words, "I survived the MCU and so can you!" (My top 5 were written for Spider-Man and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.)
Do you respond to comments?
Respond and proceed to treasure forever.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
After poking around in my catalogue of fics, it's either one I wrote for Bodyguard, "Don't Ever Let Me Start," or "The Pretty Ones (Who Try to Kill You)" for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
Most of what I write does have a happy ending. Hmm... Love Me Like You Drew (for Nancy Drew) and "Same Day, Different Jumpsuit" (the one and only Natasha/Mobius fic on AO3) are both near and dear to my heart.
Do you write crossovers?
Nope! I'm a real compartmentalizer.
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Yes! So fun! It typically boils down to "I don't like the ship(s) and/or character(s) in this fic and am here to complain even though you tagged everything properly and I could have just scrolled past!" Fic hate is silly. I chuckle all the way to the "delete" button.
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
*shakes smut variety pack* What kind ya lookin' for?
Click here for my E-rated fics on AO3.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Yep, I've had people post my fics on other platforms without my permission, thinking that as long as they added my username for "credit," it was all good 🙄
Have you ever had a fic translated?
I have not, by choice.
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Nope! I'm an editor and an only child, so.
What’s your all-time favourite ship?
I've written for so many pairings (and a few trios), but Midge/Lenny from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has an evergreen ability to set my heart aflutter.
What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
Rude. Probably my Scream AU of Nancy Drew. I would love to write it, but I can't currently see going back and reacquainting myself with all the characters I'd planned to include.
What are your writing strengths?
I love writing humour, in dialogue or otherwise. Also descriptions packed with metaphor.
What are your writing weaknesses?
I. Hate. Plot. I'm here—on this planet, on the internet—to create atmosphere, not complex storylines.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
Love it! Like @mercurygray, I speak some French and Italian, so those are the ones I tend to add if I'm going beyond English.
What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Gilmore Girls (specifically A Year in the Life), and I am ready to return to it TOMORROW if Amy Sherman-Palladino provokes me with more bad characterization.
What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to?
Nothing comes to mind! With both ships and fandoms, I pretty much jump when I wanna jump. I'm also always open to hearing requests.
What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?
Oh! Oh! What a question! It's my baby, my Pride and Prejudice AU, For Now, We May Remain Silent. I wrote it with my copy of Austen open on my desk next to my laptop, going line by line. I worked on it while coping with the final illness and death of someone I loved very much, so a lot of love went into it, and I'm glad I have the fic as a reminder of that time.
From "Studio Tour," still my favourite chapter:
Here are her paintbrushes, disorganized and held in the loose grip of big, old coffee cans. The brushes rattle when Peter runs his finger over their handles, the faded red bristles spinning. A thick, flat brush with discoloured yellow bristles might be his favourite. Glancing over his shoulder, he furtively strokes the uneven hairs with his thumb. They all have this well-used quality that makes his chest clench confusingly. Michelle’s been living a whole life with these in her hand, he thinks, and I don’t know anything about it.

16, 30, and 75??
16. How many fic ideas are you nurturing right now? Share one of them?
Okay, so I have the final chapter of Gravity Well vibrating in my head and the entire rest of The Stars screaming at me to fucking get on with it already, but I also have a Mummy AU that I talked about before, and then a very little mostly visual idea I chatted about with one of my mutuals where Anakin is MENA and Padme is Mongolian. In a more interesting timeline....
There's also a little seed of an idea for a one-shot sequel to Sweater Weather where Din and Grogu meets Luke's family and that would end with Din half-joking about taking Luke to Mandalore, but I don't know if anything will come of that. Guess we'll see when actual sweater weather swings around my neck of the woods again.
30. Do you share rough drafts or do you wait until it’s all polished?
I used to post WIPs and they weren't all that edited either, but I had a few formative experiences that made me go the "don't post until polished" route. One was readers at FFN getting fuck-off angry that I took down a Transformers WIP because I was going to rewrite and polish the story. I never posted it back up. I'm so mad I didn't because now the only copies I have left of that fic are oooooooooold word docs and text files, and they're incomplete. Another was just... the sheer number of abandoned WIPs because I didn't plot well and wrote myself into walls. It was really discouraging and I got used to expecting myself to fail whenever I started a longfic. Then I really got into the habit of participating in NaNo every year, and the NaNo method of writing balls to the wall, like you're running out of time, until you hit the end of Nov. 30th. really changed the game for me. Like, oh, I should just writewritewrite until I reach the end, and now I have all this time to go back and see what I can cut out, what I can add, what I can do to put out a finished product.
I think the finest exampe and experience I had with that method was The Storm. It was originally a lot shorter because I was in such a hurry to finish this story that wouldn't leave my ass alone and I really wanted to get the fic out there while the dinluke ship and fandom were starting to take off, but when I was going over what I wrote, I realized that the story was missing time and I needed to create more time for these characters to sit in their heads, listening to the rain and to each other, and to get to know each other better. So I wrote in enough scenes to add a new chapter and create a story with a much better tempo and pace, and that story gave me a massive fic series for the ship. What the fuck.
75. What scene in [Fanfic Name] took the longest to write? What was difficult about it?
Umm.... not sure which fic we're talking about here. But like, just assume that either all the scenes in the chapter after the story's climax or all the scenes in the last chapter of a story take the longest to write. They always do. Coming down from the high of a story's climax (lol) or tying up every loose thread that needs tying up to finish a story is just insanely hard to do. I'm trying to wrap up Gravity Well right now AND I AM STRUGGLING. I've also been working tons of overtime while living in an environment where I can't ever relax, so it's a struggle and a fight to write everything down and feel satisfied.

20 questions for 20 writers
tagged by @hopefulnightlady !!
1. How many works do you have on AO3? i have an old account, my main one, and the secret smut side where i also threw my cod fic (moonjon) because i didn't really want them associated with my main. so!! across all of them, 46 but i also orphaned a bunch of homestuck stuff way back in the day
2. What’s your total AO3 word count? 265,026 on my main! but plus the sides it's 498,415
3. What fandoms do you write for? star wars, witcher, cod, assassin's creed, narnia, dc (dick grayson), fullmetal alchemist, final fantasy vii, hobbit, legend of zelda, maze runner, merlin bbc, naruto, and then many more one-offs i've never posted. used to write for voltron, teen wolf, and fake ah crew
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos? i'm still not comfy yet connecting my sides and my main unfortunately
5. Do you respond to comments? i used to respond to every single one, then got overwhelmed, and now rarely respond unless it's a direct question. i want to respond to all of them tho 😭
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? uhh i'm not big on angsty endings tbh, so if they're not happy endings they're still hopeful. angsty-EST? maybe my second biggest fic, that one is going to leave a lot of loose ends to be picked up in the sequel
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? my big main fic is gonna have like. EVERYTHING go right for them
8. Do you get hate on fics? i've gotten a few more like.... annoyed comments? but no outright hate. one person was pissed i didn't tag a specific character as trans even tho i had the tag trans and nb characters
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? yes, and they are on the same ao3 where i'm dumping my cod stuff. dfab trans smut! not super kinky, but not wholly vanilla, either. am ace and know what i like lmao
10. Do you write crossovers? yes, but as fusions! don't think i've ever written one where the different main casts interact
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? i think way back in the day, but nothing in the last decade as far as i know
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? not to my knowledge!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? yes but it never got finished and was never published, and it was years ago
14. What’s your all-time favorite ship? oh boy ummm not sure i have one, but i keep coming back to jangobi, og pricesoap, gersakier and yennskier, royed and edling, casmund, ezides and altdes, revalink, wangxian and zhancheng. i usually latch onto one character/blorbo and then explore a bunch of different ships with them? merthur has a very special place in my heart but i'm not as into it as i used to be.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? that one teen wolf longfic i started in 2015 lmao. i did SO MUCH world building and i miss it, but boy howdy was it more than i could chew
16. What are your writing strengths? shaping au things to insert into canon, or rather, lying through half truths and omissions, both on a doylian and watsonian level
17. What are your writing weaknesses? pacing and staying interested in a fandom for long enough stretches to finish long-fic
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? there is no excuse not to put the translations at the TOP of the chapter instead of the endnote, though i'm also of the opinion that it is very rare entire sentences need to be in another language ESPECIALLY if the character whose pov you're in understands the language. there are ways of incorporating dialogue in other languages cleanly, i've seen it done and am working towards it myself, it is just so often done so messily
19. First fandom you wrote for? shugo chara, i think. oh wow that was a long time ago. well, actually, one could argue the first i wrote for was canterwood crest lmaooooo but that was before i knew what fanfiction was
20. Favorite fic you’ve written? i am VERY proud of a rexobi au i wrote, and a pre-s2 dinpaz, but my revalink on my old old account will always hold such a special place in my heart
thank you for the tag, lovely! i don't have many friends on this side blog, so i don't have any to tag, except maybe @czigonas ? we're not friends but you follow my main and many of my side blogs and i'm always so happy to see your username in my notes! you've also got some STELLAR takes in the cod sphere, so if you're up for participating, i'd love to see your thoughts! no pressure tho~
