managed to accidentally brick my entire phone (temporarily) last night in an attempt to stop myself from reading past my bedtime which is a problem that would be much more easily solved by better self-control.... and yet
#.txt#i have a custom launcher installed so my home screen is limited only to a select number of apps & a media player visual#and they're all white icons to minimize the appeal of color etc#more streamlined and i like it#but the thing is when you set up a scheduled block with the app i use for limiting things around bedtime#you can do one where you select the only apps allowed instead of deselecting#which made sense for the secondary 'go the fuck to bed' blocking!#thing is being on my homescreen counts as using the launcher app#which i did not think to select as allowed because i wasn't planning to do any edits to the launcher ?#resulting in me getting kicked out of my book at 10:30. great. bedtime.#and dropped to my home screen! cool!#and given the popup that i'm being kicked out of my home screen.#but theres nowhere else for it to go. so i am now stuck on the 'this app has been blocked. do something else or go to sleep' page#very funny to realize that in fact i couldn't navigate to any other feature of my phone without going thru the home screen or app selector#both of which are part of an app i accidentally blocked

My response to the Closed Beta Survey:
People were asking me for more specifics on how I felt about the survey, so I guess I ought to outline in a larger broader sense what I think so far of Guilty Gear StrIVe.
Graphics:
Outside of individual characters/animations, the stage graphics needed some better rendering for certain objects. Things like grass and smaller objects looked “plastic” or “lego-like” in some areas, so that could be tweaked.
Lighting seemed okay, effects from various attacks also looked very good, and better than I was expecting at the time. Clash/Offset graphics need improvement so that they appear more obvious to players (I still miss Danger Time however... that added an extra spice to the game that GG has missed since the original Instant Kill screen in the first game, perhaps it can be optional in certain modes?).
The beta was especially slow in terms of load times between matches though, and even the matching function for netplay was sluggish as well.
I would like to see actual dramatic clash intros instead of “talking head sequences” for rivalries in the future... the first trailer suggested that was possible, so I hope they can actually achieve this once more like Accent Core once had for Sol and Ky especially.
Animation-wise, nothing really outstanding to note other than the fact I still find Ky’s battle stance to be somewhat strange for him, given the screen-facing perspective... I just find it particularly odd to have his battle stance changed so much since the older games. While Millia’s stance did change, it was more subtle, for example.
The Tension gauge didn’t seem to provide enough information to me, and was rather overly simplified, and I would like better notifications when my risc guard gauge is high. Character select still looks dull, though I did like the post-match rating system. I think players would benefit not just from ratings when they win, but tips and advice when they lose as well.
The lobby still needs a lot of work, but I did like the concept of only having access to certain “floors of the tower” depending on how strong you are as a player. It makes things feel more like a dungeon exploration than just a netplay lobby. Gatekeepers truly do exist... so such gameplay should reflect that.
I would like to see something closer to what Granblue Fantasy Versus has, times of day, weather, minigames to do while waiting between matches, or even just a place to mess around with stuff.
Sounds:
Everything sounded okay, albeit random. Normally I have sound effects much louder than music, as certain sounds serve as important “tells” during a fight. Voicework tends to come second to that, but I did note that in certain underground stage areas, character voices gained acoustics, which was an interesting change.
I also liked how the voices gained a dramatic echo like the Guilty Gear X era once had, particularly for Overdrive Attacks, which I hope they keep.
Controls:
I’m going to say this up front, but I never liked the concept of throw wiffs for Guilty Gear... while it might be more useful for games like BlazBlue, GG was more fast-paced, and generally geared more towards spacing and neutral attacks, giving throws an opportunity to neutralize an attack at close range.
This made throws safer, but also kept players in check who were always about close-range mixups. Option selects were also important in older games too.
Add to this, and I dislike the idea of them being attached to the Dust button. This makes it difficult to do things like run up and perform a Dust attack, or airdash in with a Dust without accidentally inputting a throw input.
Unless they came up with a way to better control throws as opposed to pressing Dust and a Direction (or give it a better input window), I’m not sure I like things how they are.
Another issue I have is the Roman Cancel Button... under most circumstances, the default Roman Cancel macro is P+K+S... this was always the default button in most games, but you couldn’t opt for other macros, like S+K+H, or P+K+H. This is important for characters who negative edge inputs, like Johnny or Zato, as they might need a different macro input so they can better “hold certain buttons” without having to rely on the default Roman Cancel input. This applies to other things like Slashback, Blitz, or Faultless Defense as well. Limiting input macros just leads to more problems if you ask me.
Gatling Combo cancels seem “okay” for now... and I understand why they put limits on Punch and Kick buttons, simply because those kinds of moves have higher priority and are safer in most situations. I think it makes sense to limit benefits when priority is on taking less risk in a fight.
In other words, using stronger attacks is more of a gamble, and therefore should get more natural benefits. Bigger risk, better rewards. This goes for guarding as well. While blocking itself isn’t taking much risk (or rather, raising RISC), players who use technique like Instant Blocking or FD blocking should get benefits from using it.
I don’t know if Blitzshield will return, but I wouldn’t mind if it did, especially if it functioned the same as Slashbacks in older games, especially on block or wakeup.
Gameplay/Nuances:
Not enough special moves/tools for characters to my liking... though some felt overpowered. Ky’s 6H acting like a Dust Launcher felt way too powerful for someone like him... though I can understand why such exists if it’s a slow attack.
Other characters felt “sluggish” at certain areas, like Chipp Zanuff and his combo routes (which would normally feel easy to chain together). Even Alpha Blade felt a bit slow.
Airdash Speed/Height also felt slow and limited. Also I don’t like the idea that forward Airdashes have the “Air Hike” glyph (DMC), but Air Backdashes do not as much. If they’re going to have air dash “tells”, it should work for any form of airdash. That’s especially needed for crossups and IAD situations.
Also it felt like Backdashes weren’t very safe, not to mention the damage output being too high.
I missed moves like Ky’s Grinders or Sol’s Riot Stamp... or even classic moves like Tyrant Rave Alpha, Sidewinder, or Crescent Slash.
Lots of characters felt lobotomized and overly simple to my liking, compared to their more developed older versions. Even EX characters felt more developed in the older games.
I’m still not sure how I feel about Roman Cancels having a “hitbox” or “launch hit” when they go active, but I guess it takes getting used to. It’s not a bad tool, but I’m not sure how effective such would be as a Dead Angle on defense.
I was also told that blocking reversal moves (DPs) in the air causes a large blowback... I find that interesting, but I don’t know if there’s pushback when blocking said moves on the ground.
It’s fine if you can FD moves to deal with reversals safely, but common blocking without Instant Blocks should at least have some knockback to put some value in reversal moves.
Other Stuff:
I liked the concept of getting to use normal attacks immediately after certain key special moves (like Sol’s Vortex), or the simplicity of the juggles. Though I hope they improve things like Dust Air Combos... right now Dust only causes launch on counterhit, there are no more ground Dust combos like Xrd had.
It also felt like the window for an air combo was very small as you could only do 3 hits at most after a Dust Homing Jump. I would like to see more uses of Jump Dust for characters, or even momentum-based combos.
Things like Impossible Dust (homing jump cancel) or even Jump Install would also be nice.
I would like to see more character-customization, like having different types of weapons/outfits, abilities, or stats, in an adventure-style game (like Granblue currently uses, but bigger in scale perhaps).
I would also like to see different modes of gameplay, like an Isuka Mode, or a 3-on-3 battle setup for team battles (not necessarily tag style, but KOF style teams as well).
I would also like to see GG Generations return... classic modes for every style of play:
GG1 Mode, GGX Mode, GGXXAC Mode, Xrd Mode, and maybe even a GG2 mode that makes special moves resource-heavy (like Granblue currently employs). Having separate modes of play would satisfy everyone... EX fighting styles as well, to further expand character play. Gold Bosses and Darkside enemies need to return as well.
I would also hope they explore the prospect of a GG animated film or movie, though that’s still wishful thinking. Having English novels would also help move things along.
Roster-wise, I just want everyone to return at their best, along with really cool new faces.
Closing Notes:
Experiencing the beta first-hand, I can definitely say it has Guilty Gear aspects at its core, but I felt wanting more. I know they can pull it off, and I gave them everything I could possibly want in the game.
There’s a possibility they might update the beta later on... so I hope I’ll get to participate in that as well.

App Like Snagit For Mac
Computer apps (or applications) are something we are used to having. When there’s something we want to do, we think of “Let me check if there’s an app for that”. Let’s face it–it makes our lives easier but not necessarily better. To-do lists? There are thousands of apps for that. Do you want to start to journal? Don’t worry–there are several to choose from.
However, not all apps are of the same quality. So, what is the best productivity app on the Mac?
What is the name of the web app that can snag a web page and allow you to edit it for testing (Not Snagit)? What is the best free screen capture tool to make a presentation? Is there an option on Snagit for Mac to output all screenshots to an image format rather than defaulting to the Snagit project format? Snagit 2018.2.3 - Screen capture utility. Download the latest versions of the best Mac apps at safe and trusted MacUpdate Download, install, or update Snagit for Mac from MacUpdate.
We all have our opinions, and declaring the “best” app is almost impossible. What might be the best app for me may not be right for you, and an app you love may not be quite what I need.
One advantage that Asian Efficiency has is we have a team that lives and breathes productivity and we’ve been evaluating tools and productivity methods for years. We debate apps internally every day, and we all come at it from different angles, backgrounds, and age ranges. This same team has helped over 13 thousand of our customers and readers with their productivity journey and has helped thousands reach their goals.
In addition, we have a highly intelligent productivity community called The Dojo where tools and techniques are shared.
When I started to compile our annual list of the best Mac apps this year, I polled the growing AE team and members of the Dojo to see what the favorites are. Our guarantee is that we have personally tried, tested, and used all the apps that we included in this list.
Here’s our list of the top 10 productivity apps of 2018, and some more tools that didn’t quite make the top 10, but are still great.
(Just remember – you want to avoid Shiny Object Syndrome. Only start digging into a tool if it is something that you actually need! If you don’t need it, set it aside for now. It’ll still be available when you’re ready to put it to use.)
Top 10
Whenever we set up a new Mac, these are the first apps we install. While we can use a Mac without them, we’re not nearly as productive. A good productivity app should reduce friction and amplify good habits, and all of these meet those criteria.
#1: Dropbox – Dropbox is essential for how we work at Asian Efficiency. All of our shared files, blog posts, media, etc. are stored in Dropbox which makes it very easy to collaborate on projects as a team even though we are located all over the world. This is the very first thing I install when setting up a new Mac as it provides the sync and storage foundation for my workflow. iCloud Drive is getting better and better so maybe someday Dropbox won’t be necessary, but for our needs it is hard to beat.
#2: 1Password – The absolute best password manager for Mac. Essentially it works by having you creating one master password, which then grants access to all your other passwords. These passwords can be randomly generated inside of 1Password, which means that all your individual passwords are incredibly strong and near-impossible to hack. You don’t have to remember all of these passwords though as your single master password gives you (and only you) easy access to all your other passwords and can even be triggered when unlocked via a keyboard shortcut that autofills the information in your browser for you. 1Password also gives you the ability to store credit card information, secure notes, software serial numbers, and other important (but sensitive) information like passport numbers, your SSN and bank account details securely. See an example of how Thanh uses it in his life.
If you need to securely share some passwords with others, there is 1Password Families and 1Password Teams. These let you have Personal Vaults and Shared Vaults so you can keep some passwords just for yourself and some passwords available to family members or co-workers. With 1Password Teams, you can make it so that some staff can launch and log in to websites without being able to see the password. My wife and I use the Family plan at home, and it is great to be able to share passwords for important sites.
#3: TextExpander – TextExpander does exactly what it says on the tin – expands text. It sounds really simple, but once you develop the mindset of watching for things you type repeatedly you’ll start to see hundreds of things that you can automate with TextExpander. You can even use the more advanced features like fill-in snippets, date/time math, and optional selections to create some very powerful and personal email templates. We have a video guide to using TextExpander if you need some help to get started with it. Some members of the Dojo prefer Typinator which is not subscription-based, but members of the AE team like TextExpander.
#4: Alfred/Launchbar – Alfred and Launchbar are both classified as application launchers, but that’s just scratching the service of what these apps can do. They allow you to find and open files quickly, perform quick calculations, search your clipboard history, control iTunes media playback, create custom searches, and so much more. There are even custom workflows you can create or install to expand their functionality and control your Mac with the keyboard. Think of them as Spotlight on steroids. Both of these applications are excellent, and which one you decide to use will be determined by personal taste (Mike and I use Alfred, Thanh uses Launchbar). Just make sure you pick one!
#5: OmniFocus – The absolute best task manager for Mac and my digital brain. OmniFocus is a powerful task manager with a very nice user interface which makes it a joy to use on Mac, iOS, and Apple Watch. OmniFocus has a lot of features and is very powerful so it can be a bit intimidating to get up and running with it, but if you invest the time to learn how to use it, it will be time well spent. We have a whole library of free OmniFocus tutorials here or if you want our step-by-step system you can join our course here. We’re really excited about OmniFocus 3 that is coming out in 2018 – among other features there’ll be tags, more flexible scheduling, and a limited web interface.
#6: Keyboard Maestro – Keyboard Maestro is an application to launch macros on your Mac, which can be used to automate just about any repetitive task. Basically, Keyboard Maestro automatically performs certain actions whenever a particular trigger is activated, which could be something like a hotkey combination, connecting to a wireless network, or even connecting a specific USB device to your Mac. Once you start applying these macros, it will change how you use your computer. Mike wrote an article about Keyboard Maestro awhile back that includes some video examples to help you get started. A recent Keyboard Maestro use case for me: when I start up my Twitter app on my Mac, it will automatically kill it after 5 minutes. This stops me from getting lost into reading about whatever the outrage of the day is.
#7: Hazel – Hazel is an automated file organization utility that can watch whatever folders you tell it to and organize your files according to whatever rules you create. For example, I have a Hazel rule that watches my Download folder and if anything is over 1 week old it labels it “Red” and moves it to my “Action Items” folder on my desktop, which I clean up at the end of the day. Hazel is also an essential part of pretty much any paperless workflow, and we have an article that takes you through a simple setup. For more Hazel tips, check out this article. Inside the Dojo we have even more workflows that are shared by our members.
#8: nvALT – nvALT is in desperate need of an update, but it’s still an essential part of our capture workflow. Forked by Brett Terpstra, nvALT is a quick way to take notes using just your keyboard. Just hit a keyboard combination and nvALT opens, ready to capture whatever you throw at it. As you type, it will search your existing notes and if you want to create a new note just hit “Enter”. It’s a very simple, lightweight program and best of all it’s free so there’s no reason not to try it. Rumor has it that Brett is working on a commercial replacement, but we’ve used it so much over the years that we will gladly pay whatever he decides to charge for it.
#9: PopClip – PopClip is a menu bar application that opens up an iOS-style interface whenever you highlight text on your Mac. It includes the standard commands like cut, copy and paste, but also has extensions that let you do a lot of different things (like formatting text or sending to OmniFocus). You can send emails, post tweets, apply Markdown rules, etc.
#10: Bartender – One of the great things about the Mac is that there are a ton of awesome Menu bar applications (like the aforementioned PopClip & nvALT), but if you have a lot of them your Menu bar will quickly become cluttered. Bartender keeps you menu bar clean by controlling which application appear in the main menu bar, which ones appear only in the Bartender menu bar (a sub-menu for your menu bar), and which ones are hidden completely.
Best of the Rest
There are a lot of other applications that we use on a daily/weekly basis that play a very important part in our workflows.
“Netflix for Apps”
There are a lot of great apps in this list. Before you pull out your credit card, we want to point you to a service that many AE community members love: SetApp. With SetApp, you pay a monthly subscription and get access to a large list of Mac apps, including many in this article. The subscription includes upgrades too.
As we mentioned last year, expect more productivity apps go the subscription route. SetApp is a great way to get some of the best apps for one price.
Communications & Calendar
Airmail, Postbox, MailPlane, MailMate – There are a lot of great email clients available for Mac, but Apple Mail (or Mail.app) isn’t one of them. Apple Mail seems to always have Gmail-related bugs, and it doesn’t support Gmail keyboard shortcuts which can save you a lot of time processing email. Fortunately, there are several great alternatives. Airmail is an absolutely beautiful email client that integrates with just about every productivity app out there. Postbox is a powerful email client with some unique features (like domain fencing, which prevents you from sending email from the wrong account accidentally). MailPlane is great if you like the Gmail web interface but prefer a native app, and MailMate is an incredibly powerful keyboard-centric email client if you like writing in Markdown. Inside our Escape Your Email course we go in more detail how to setup an email workflow with these apps for maximum efficiency.
BusyCal – BusyCal is an incredibly powerful calendaring application that has a lot of advanced features (like Mike’s personal favorite, the ability to set a custom week length view). It supports pretty much every calendar type available and is rock solid.
Zoom – ”That’s it, we need a replacement for Skype!” said Thanh when our Daily Huddle went off the rails due to connectivity issues one time too many. We settled on Zoom, and it has been rock-solid every since. All of our team meetings, both voice and video, are done with Zoom and we’re happy with it.
Slack/Hipchat – We have virtually no internal email here at Asian Efficiency, and much of that is due to Hipchat which we use as an internal communication tool. If you need an answer to something right away or need to have a discussion about a certain topic, a tool like Hipchat or Slack will allow you to reach a resolution much faster than an email thread. Atlassian, the maker of Hipchat, is releasing Stride, which we plan to test out this year. Tile app for mac desktop.
Tweetbot – There aren’t many great third-party Twitter clients, but Tweetbot is one of them. It’s a beautiful and full-featured Twitter client that has fantastic support for multiple accounts and lists, and also has powerful mute filters to block out the noise and show you only what you want to see. Now that Twitter has announced the end of their Mac app, it is even more useful.
Safety & Security
Backblaze – If you don’t have an online backup of your hard drive, sign up for Backblaze right now. There are several online backup solutions available, but the AE team likes Backblaze because the Mac client is much more polished and easy to use than some of the other alternatives.
Encrypt.me – Most people don’t think twice about using public wi-fi (but they should). Encrypt.me (formerly known as Cloak) is the easiest way to automatically secure your connection on public networks and keep your sensitive data safe from prying eyes.
Little Snitch – A firewall program for the Mac. It’s a little annoying in the beginning when every program starts calling home to check for updates, but once it’s up and running it runs just fine and will tell you when someone is trying to access your computer (or when an app is trying to connect out without your knowledge).
Graphics & Information Sharing
Graphic – If you are a designer or someone who works heavily with vector drawing and illustrations, you are probably subscribed to Creative Cloud and using Illustrator and Photoshop. If you don’t need that much power (or don’t want to pay for that subscription), Graphic is a well-designed and surprisingly feature-rich vector application that is inexpensive.
Snagit App Free
PDFpen – PDFpen is the swiss army knife of PDF editors. Developed by Smile Software (makers of TextExpander), PDFpen allows you to do things to PDFs you didn’t think were possible like edit text & images, and includes OCR to make your PDF documents searchable (which makes it an essential part of any paperless workflow). Asana for mac.
Snagit For Mac Free Download
Snagit – There are many apps for capturing and marking up screenshots (including Tapes mentioned below), but if you want an app that does it all, Snagit is one of the most powerful. You can quickly capture images and video with a few keypresses, do all sorts of annotations, and quickly share them to the clipboard or the cloud. If you share it to the cloud, it will automatically put the link in your clipboard. You can even do scrolling and panoramic capture to capture more than what you see on the screen at any one time.
App for iphone on mac. The MacBook Air features a Retina display with slimmer bezels, two Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports, 8th-generation Intel chips with Intel UHD graphics, up to 16GB RAM, and up to 1.5TB of SSD storage space. It is equipped with a T2 chip for security and it includes Touch ID along with an upgraded third-gen butterfly keyboard, louder speakers, and a Force Touch trackpad. Buy Now Just Updated • Apple in October 2018 introduced a new design for the MacBook Air, its most affordable notebook starting at $1,199.
Tapes/Loom – We are big on documentation here at Asian Efficiency, and we use Tapes often to record quick screencasts that are automatically uploaded to show others how to do certain tasks. This is also great for customer support as it allows us to demonstrate via video how to solve customer problems. Tapes hasn’t been updated in quite some time, but Loom is a more modern replacement.
Writing & Ideas
Byword – I tend to do most of my writing in Ulysses (see below), but Byword is a beautiful Markdown editor that is great for writing plain text that is not part of a larger project.
Day One – We’re big fans of daily journaling, and Day One is far and away the best app for this. The Mac app syncs with the iOS version, which is where this app really shines.
DEVONthink Pro Office – If you have a huge amount of information to keep track of, DEVONthink is hard to beat. You can capture research, documents, email, and web clipping to one place, and DEVONthink’s artificial intelligence can help you file and find the information you need. It’s a complex application, but many power users embrace it. Here is a quick guide we have written.
Evernote/OneNote – Evernote is a great tool for storing reference material. It’s free with a paid upgrade for additional features and more storage space, and allows you to quickly store information using the web clipper and access your information when you need it on any device. OneNote is free and has a huge fanbase, especially among Windows users. Its tight integration with MS Office makes it a compelling choice for people in that ecosystem, though the Mac app is more limited than the Windows version.
MindNode –MindNode is a great option for mind mapping software and has a beautiful user interface. There is iCloud sync between Mac and iOS, and it has a fantastic OmniFocus export feature. You can brainstorm project ideas and then have the project/tasks set up in OmniFocus with two clicks. Anytime I need to plan things out (including this article), I start in MindNode.
OmniGraffle – OmniGraffle is what we use to create most of our AE diagrams. It’s essentially the Mac equivalent of Microsoft’s Visio, except that it is much easier to use, and you can create some really powerful diagrams without having an extensive knowledge of modeling software. It also has an extensive built-in stencil function where you can search for extension stencils that other people have uploaded online to share.
Pages/Numbers/Keynote – Formerly known as the iWork suite, these three applications will meet the business/professional needs of almost anyone. And if you bought a new Mac recently, you probably got them for free. The real standout here is Keynote, which is both very powerful and easy to use. The animated transitions that are included with Keynote are top notch and allow you to make very professional looking presentations quickly and easily.
Reeder – If you still rely on RSS to keep up with your favorite websites (like this one) then Reeder is the best option available. Nothing else comes close in terms of design, and Reeder supports many different RSS aggregators like Feedbin, Feedly, Feed Wrangler, and many more.
Screenflow – Screenflow is an essential tool that we use when creating video course content (like the Dojo training videos). It allows you to record your screen easily and edit your screencasts with callouts, transitions, annotations, and much more.
Ulysses – Ulysses is an excellent pro writing app with a beautiful user interface that is designed to support your writing. It works well for writing blog posts, articles, and even longer-form content. You can export to HTML, Markdown, ePub, PDF, Word, or even straight to Medium or WordPress. These very words are being typed in Ulysses.
System Utilities
Amphetamine – Amphetamine is an updated version of the beloved Caffeine menu bar app. It has one main purpose: it keeps your computer (and more importantly your screen) from going to sleep. Very handy when on long Skype or webinar viewing sessions.
Chrome / Safari – macOS has a built-in web browser (Safari) that’s very good and very fast. I tend to use Chrome more as it is well-integrated with Google web apps and I like the way tabs work, but others on the Asian Efficiency team use Safari. One downside of Chrome is it tends to eat up your laptop battery a lot quicker than Safari. Which browser you use is personal preference.
Copied – This app allows you to copy and paste back and forth between your Mac and iOS devices. Think of it as Handoff for copy/paste commands. It isn’t as seamless as Universal Clipboard in iOS 10/macOS Sierra, but it gives you more control and flexibility.
CleanMyMac – Disk space can be scarce (especially on laptops), and CleanMyMac is a utility that shows you exactly what is eating up all your precious hard drive capacity and you can free up a lot of space with it. You can also keep an eye on your Mac’s health to make sure it is running at top performance.
Default Folder X – This could probably be in the Top 10 section, because when I use a Mac without it I miss it terribly. It adds a wrapper to the Finder’s Save window which gives you quick access to open, recent, or favorite files and folders. A real time saver.
Dropzone 3 – Dropzone is a menu bar application that does two things: 1) It allows you to execute common actions on a file by dragging over the appropriate “hotspot” (like uploading to FTP), and 2) it gives you a “Drop Bar” where you can collect files before doing something with them. Mike uses this all the time to collect a file from the Finder location before he drags and drops it into another application like a Keynote presentation.
Flux – Flux is useful for anyone who works at night and cares about their quality of sleep. The blue light from your computer actually messes with your body’s natural circadian rhythm and tricks it into thinking that it’s not as late as it really is so that your body stops producing melatonin (the chemical that helps you fall asleep naturally). Flux adjusts the color temperature of your screen to a “warmer” orangish shade that is easier on your eyes and doesn’t keep you up all night even if you have to work late. macOS now (thankfully!) has Night Shift built in, but many people find that Flux does a better job.
Moom – Apple has very basic version split-screen functionality, but Moom remains a very powerful window management app. Moom allows you to quickly move and/or resize windows by either hovering your mouse over the green “Maximize” icon or by setting your own keyboard commands. It allows you to resize windows according to pre-determined grid sizes, and has a ton of customization options.
Shush – Mike works from home a lot and has 5 kids, so his house can be a little noisy sometimes. This can be problematic for team meetings, but Shush allows him to mute his microphone except when he presses a hotkey to activate it. This way people on the other end of my Skype conversations aren’t distracted by the background noise. You can also set it as “push-to-silence” making this application an effective “cough button” for podcast recording.
Transmit – There are a lot of FTP clients out there that will get the job done, but Transmit is the best. It has a ton of features, a great user interface, and is the fastest FTP client out there. If you transfer files often, Transmit is great.
Webcam Settings – More and more of our time is spent on camera doing video conferencing, webinars, and recording video. Many times we don’t have professional lighting and camera gear to do this, so sometimes the video quality doesn’t look as good as it could. Webcam Settings is a little menu bar app that lets you adjust exposure time, contrast, saturation, and white balance for your built-in or external webcam. If you have an external USB camera that supports it, you can also adjust auto-exposure and focus, zoom, pan, tilt, and many other hardware-level controls. It’s not vain to want to look your best on camera!
VirtualBox – Are you a Mac user that needs to run Windows? One option is to buy a separate Windows computer, but I like to use virtualization software to run Windows on my Mac. There are paid utilities for this, but for my needs the free open-source VirtualBox works perfectly.
Everything Else
Deliveries – If you order a lot of things online, you’ll definitely want an easy way to keep track of your packages. Deliveries does this, and will even detect a tracking number on your clipboard and add it to the application for you. You can even get notifications when your packages are delivered if you’re so inclined.
Paprika – If you cook, you should check out Paprika as a recipe storage solution. Paprika syncs with your iOS devices for use in the kitchen, allows you keep your recipes organized, and can even tell you what ingredients you need to pick up at the store.
Soulver – This is one of those I-didn’t-know-I-needed-it-but-once-I-tried-it-I-love-having-it apps. The best way to describe it is a natural language calculator. It lets you work things out and do calculations, formulas, currency, unit conversions, and much more. These can all be done with calculators and spreadsheets of course, but there is something helpful about being able to work things out the way I think them. It’s one of those apps I leave running in the background and flip to to do a back-of-the-envelope calculation.
Be Focused Pro/Vitamin-R – We are big fans of the Pomodoro Technique for making progress on your most important task of the day. Be Focused Pro is a simple but nice pomodoro timer for the Mac, and if you need something with more power and flexibility, check out Vitamin-R.
Tooth Fairy – Do you use AirPods, and do you use them on multiple devices? Tooth Fairy is a small menu bar app that lets you quickly switch your AirPods to your Mac with the mouse or keyboard. No messing around in sound or Bluetooth settings required.
Timing – It’s difficult to know what changes you need to make unless you know how you are spending your time. Timing is a great Mac app that logs what you are working on (or are not working on, as the case may be) so that you can see how productive you really are. If you’re a Dojo member, there’s a discount code available for you inside the customer area (one of many perks being a Dojo member).
How can the answer be improved? Like Siri on your iOS devices, Siri on your Mac is your intelligent personal assistant that helps you multitask and get things done just by asking. For example, while you work on a document, you can ask Siri to send a message to your coworker saying that the document is on the way—without having to stop what you’re doing. Siri app for mac. May 27, 2016 Siri on iOS can launch an app, but that’s about the extent of its ability to control apps. With Siri for Mac though, I would want to be able to not only open apps, but also minimize them, close them, quit them, switch them, etc. “Hey Siri” is supported on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch with iOS 8 or later while plugged in. Not supported on first-generation iPad, iPad 2, and first-generation iPad mini. Siri Suggestions for Shortcuts are supported on iPhone 6s or later, iPad Pro, iPad (5th generation or later), iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 4. Apple Music subscription required.

Timery’s iOS 14 widgets in light and dark mode.
Widgets in iOS 14 are a genuine hit, in large part because of the visual customization advantages they provide and the ability to be placed on the Home Screen. Back when they were first announced in June, however, there was concern about one way these new widgets would be a downgrade from their predecessors: widgets in iOS 13 and earlier could offer more interactivity, even to the point of acting as mini-apps.
Due to limitations imposed by Apple on iOS 14 widgets, I was afraid one of my most-used widgets would become far less useful. That widget is for Timery, the Toggl time tracking app. Timery’s iOS 13 widget enabled not only starting and stopping timers right from its widget, but you could also see a real-time view of your current running timer. With iOS 14’s widgets, I feared Timery wouldn’t be able to update its widget’s data often enough to provide a real-time timer view, and I wasn’t sure how convenient the widget would feel when starting a timer would require launching the full Timery app.
Today Timery’s iOS 14 update has arrived, and I’m thrilled to report that my concerns were entirely unfounded. Developer Joe Hribar has managed to work around Apple’s API limitations as well as could be hoped, and deliver new widgets that actually provide more functionality than before.
The main reason Timery is able to offer more power than before, despite a new set of limitations, is that the app now includes a variety of separate widget options that, when used in tandem, can more than make up for what the app’s single iOS 13 widget could do.
Timery’s three widget types.
There are three types of iOS 14 widgets available in Timery:
Saved Timers
Current Time Entry
Time Tracked
The Saved Timers widget looks the most like Timery’s previous widget, and it comes in small, medium, and large sizes which provide launchers for one, four, and ten of your timers, respectively. Tapping a timer will launch the full Timery app and start the timer with no further action required on your part. The need for the full app to open is an unfortunate regression compared to the old widget, but I quickly got used to it.
There are a couple noteworthy details about the Saved Timers widget. First, from its configuration screen you can optionally activate a toggle labeled ‘Show Current Time Entry,’ which will cause the widget to not only display your timers, but also a real-time count of your current running timer. This recreates a key piece of functionality from Timery’s iOS 13 widget, so I immediately turned it on; my medium widget now features the two timers I use consistently, plus a live count of my current timer, just like the old widget.
Timery widgets on iPad.
The second thing worth mentioning about the Saved Timers widget is that you can use multiple versions of the widget at once to house different sets of timers. If you commonly use certain timers related to work and others related to school, or some other area of life, you might find it preferable to maintain separate widgets for those different groups of timers rather than throwing everything in a single large widget. Now that’s an option, and it never was with the iOS 13 widget.
The Current Time Entry widget is simple and straightforward: it takes the ‘Show Current Time Entry’ functionality that I just mentioned as an option for the Saved Timers widget and puts it in its own dedicated widget. It’s available in small and medium sizes.
The widget I’m especially excited about is the final one: Time Tracked. Available in all three sizes, this widget is highly configurable and provides a glanceable insight into the time you’ve tracked either on your current day or current week.
Viewing and configuring the Time Tracked widget.
My top feature request since Timery debuted last year has always been a reports feature, and while you could create something similar via a shortcut (especially starting today, as additional shortcut time periods are now supported), I still wished for a more native feature. Though Timery’s Time Tracked widget still isn’t a full-blown reports option, it does provide the data I would most want from such a feature: my total time tracked for the week. Being able to view the total time for the day is great too, but the full app’s Time Entries tab has always offered that total already; summing the full week’s worth of timers from that tab, however, is a much bigger pain. Before, I would always visit Toggl’s main site several times per week to get my week’s totals, and now I don’t have to because my Timery widget offers that data at a glance.
Time Tracked can be configured with a variety of options beyond simply whether you want your totals for the day or week. You can select which workspace to track, whether to filter by client, project, description, tag, or billable status, and you can also change how totals are organized and whether to have the widget round them up or not.
Speaking of configuration options, it’s also worth mentioning that all of Timery’s widgets can follow custom appearance settings. By default, the widgets will change between light and dark appearances automatically in following your device’s system setting, but if you’d like, you can manually configure any of them to retain either the light or dark appearance permanently – a nice option I haven’t commonly seen with other apps.
With today’s iOS 14 update, Timery has managed to ship widgets that offer even greater overall value than before. The need for the new widgets to launch the full app when buttons are pressed is a minor inconvenience and one I quickly grew accustomed to. But the flexibility now afforded by the option to use several different types of widgets at once, and configure them to your exact needs, is undoubtedly a net gain for the app and its users.
Currently I have a medium Saved Timers widget on my iPad Home Screen and iPhone Today view that’s stacked with a medium Time Tracked widget. Saved Timers displays the two timers I use most often along with space to show a live count of my current timer; Time Tracked displays the total time I’ve tracked for the week, broken down by timer. In the same amount of space that Timery’s iOS 13 widget took up, I’m getting substantive functionality upgrades. I have very few widget stacks installed on my devices, but this Timery stack is invaluable, and I expect many users will find stacks a great option for combining multiple Timery widgets moving forward.
Timery’s widget update is available now on the App Store.

The best Android shortcuts that aren't built-in
New Post has been published on https://nexcraft.co/the-best-android-shortcuts-that-arent-built-in/
The best Android shortcuts that aren't built-in
The beauty of Android lies in its customizability. Apps can hook into the operating system and add shortcuts that weren’t built-in, allowing you to streamline your device as much as possible. Here are four apps that help you do just that.
Add shortcuts that go to a specific screen within an app
The icons on your home screen give you quick access to your favorite apps, but most of those just take you to the main screen of whatever you open. From there, you still have to tap through to get to the features you want, and if that’s a process you repeat daily, it can get cumbersome. Some apps may allow you to create shortcuts for these functions (Google Docs, for example, lets you create a shortcut on your home screen that starts a new document), but not all do.
There are plenty of apps in the Play Store, however, that let you create shortcuts to specific “Activities,” or functions, within other apps. QuickShortcutMaker is one such tool. Install it, then long-press on the home screen to open up the “Widgets” creator. Tap and hold the “QuickShortcutMaker” option that appears in the list, and you’ll be able to add a shortcut to specific locations within certain apps. For example, you could create shortcuts that pop you directly into Netflix’s search interface, open your Amazon wish list, or instantly create a new item on your to-do list.
Again, some apps come with this functionality, and while figuring out which activity you want to target can feel a bit cryptic (because they’re named things like “.activity.PrefsActivity”), it can be remarkably useful.
Add swipe gestures to home screen shortcuts with Nova Launcher
Unfortunately, you can only fit so many icons on your home screen before the shortcuts themselves start to get unwieldy. If you’re tired of scrolling through pages of apps and you’re willing to replace your home screen launcher, you can get many, many more new shortcuts. You might lose some features of your current home screen, but you’ll gain a lot in return.
Nova Launcher is easily the most popular third-party home screen replacement, and it contains one of my favorite features of all time: swipe gestures. Nova allows you to add extra touch gestures to your home screen to invoke all kinds of actions. For example, you could swipe down on the home screen to see your notifications drawer, negating the need to swipe down from the top edge. You can customize these from Nova’s settings under “Gestures & Inputs.”
Even more useful, though—and my current addiction—is adding swipe gestures to your existing home screen icons. From the Nova home screen, press and hold on one of your app icons, then tap the “Edit” button. Select the “None” option under “Swipe Action” to create a gesture that will start an app, launch an activity, or perform any other function Nova supports. From then on, when you swipe up on that icon, it’ll perform the desired action.
I use this for all sorts of things. Swiping up on the Maps icon immediately navigates me home, swiping up on the Phone icon immediately calls my wife, and…well, I could go on. This works like the “Activities” widgets described in the first section, but you won’t have to dedicate home screen real estate to these shortcuts. Nova still has the ability to create Activity shortcut icons like QuickShortcutMaker does, though, which is handy if you want some shortcuts as their own icons and others as swipe actions on existing icons.
Add more options to the Quick Settings menu with Tiles
When you drag down from the top of your phone’s screen, you’ll see all your notifications. Drag down again and you’ll see the Quick Settings menu: a plethora of icons that, with one tap, will enable or disable features such as Airplane Mode, Do Not Disturb, or the flashlight. You can edit these tiles by tapping the pencil button, allowing you to add new ones or remove those you don’t use.
Android’s selection of Quick Settings tiles is rather limited, though, which is why Tiles, a 99-cent app, is a godsend. You can add any activity as a tile, or add tiles that toggle settings like adaptive brightness, launch the calculator, or perform all kinds of other tasks. I personally use this to enable and disable “Always On,” Android’s active display feature that can be useful but drains a bit too much battery if left on.
Tiles’ one inconvenience is that for certain tiles, you’ll need to plug your phone into your computer and run an ADB command to give certain permissions. If you’ve never used ADB or the command line before, this can be a little daunting, but tech-savvy users should be able to follow the instructions to make it happen.
Create custom voice commands and automate everything with Tasker
The tricks above allow you to create tappable shortcuts to tons of different functions, and that can speed up your life an awful lot. But what if you didn’t have to tap anything at all?
Tasker is an incredibly popular app that’s been around for years, and it’s a perfect showcase of Android’s hidden power. With Tasker, you can create rules that trigger specific events based on certain conditions. For example, you could have your phone automatically launch your music app when you plug in your headphones, or stay silent when it’s face down on the table.
Plugins expand its capabilities even further. AutoVoice, for one, allows you to create custom “OK Google” voice commands. If you can imagine it, there’s a good chance Tasker can do it, though it may require extra permissions from the command line or even root access in certain cases. If those requirements seem a bit too complicated, there’s still plenty you can do with Tasker’s most basic options.
Like the other apps we’ve discussed, Tasker can also create activity shortcuts and Quick Settings tiles, or you can use it to create your own apps. Just know that Tasker can be a bit complex depending on what you want to do, so be ready to experiment and do some reading if you want to truly experience the full scope of its abilities.

Lock Down Your Laptop With OpenBSD: Part 2
So you've got a nice fresh OpenBSD install on your laptop, and you're excited to use it. However the desktop environment it comes with is absolutely horrifying to use. Following up from the installation of OpenBSD found on This Blog Post, it is time to tweak out OpenBSD to have a nice and custom desktop tailored to your needs.
I will be configuring i3 window manager, although the setup process for a more well-known desktop environment (like GNOME or XFCE) is very similar in terms of setup.
Since I opted for i3, there's a lot more manual configuration- but the reward is much greater in terms of the ability to customize it. Anyways, this machine doesn't configure itself- so lets dive right in!
Installing Required Software
I wanted for a somewhat custom look, so this is what I set out to install:
i3-gaps
i3status
rofi
rxvt-unicode
chromium (yes, it's modded by the developers)
irssi
w3m
vim
openbsd-backgrounds (because it contains the xwallpaper app)
To install these, I logged in as root and ran the following command in the terminal (once connected to internet):
pkg_add i3-gaps i3status rofi rxvt-unicode chromium irssi w3m vim openbsd-backgrounds
With this completed and out of the way, configuration of the OS is now much easier and we're ready to actually begin configuration.
First Tweaks
There's a console at the login prompt that isn't my taste, so I wanted to disable it. To do so, run:
sed -i 's/xconsole/#xconsole/' /etc/X11/xenodm/Xsetup_0 echo 'xset b off' >> /etc/X11/xenodm/Xsetup_0
The first command comments out the execution of XConsole at the login screen, while the second one disables system beeps at the prompt.
Next thing is enabling the ability to save us some battery life, since we are installing on a laptop:
rcctl enable apmd rcctl set apmd flags -A rcctl start apmd
Apmd is the Advanced Power Management Daemon, and automatically handles the power draw for your system for you.
Since I created a user other than root during installation (let's call the username joe), it's critical to give the account access to doas.
echo 'permit persist keepenv joe' > /etc/doas.conf
The doas command on OpenBSD is actually slated to be the successor to sudo on most platforms, due to it's simplicity and ease of use. Many Linux systems already provide doas as an alternative to sudo due to how well it runs, and this one line just grants the same access you would normally have when using it. However, you can also restrict the access to specific commands depending on the user.
We want to also make the user a member of the staff group, as this group has access to more system resources than plain old users:
usermod -G staff joe
While we're at it, we might as well bump up some of the resource limits even further so our system will run like a dream.
Modify the staff: entry in /etc/login.conf to look like this:
staff:\ :datasize-cur=1024M:\ :datasize-max=8192M:\ :maxproc-cur=512:\ :maxproc-max=1024:\ :openfiles-cur=4096:\ :openfiles-max=8192:\ :stacksize-cur=32M:\ :ignorenologin:\ :requirehome@:\ :tc=default:
Then, append this to /etc/sysctl.conf:
# shared memory limits (chrome needs a ton) kern.shminfo.shmall=3145728 kern.shminfo.shmmax=2147483647 kern.shminfo.shmmni=1024 # semaphores kern.shminfo.shmseg=1024 kern.seminfo.semmns=4096 kern.seminfo.semmni=1024 kern.maxproc=32768 kern.maxfiles=65535 kern.bufcachepercent=90 kern.maxvnodes=262144 kern.somaxconn=2048
NOTE: If a setting exists already and is already higher than what you plan to replace it with, don't touch it. You'll just slow the system down.
What this does is allow for larger amounts of memory to be used by the user and allows the OS to have larger amounts of shared memory.
Awesome, Now let's get suspend working! First we need to run
mkdir /etc/apm
and then append the following to /etc/apm/suspend:
#!/bin/sh pkill -USR1 xidle
We can now run chmod +x /etc/apm/suspend and it will work properly.
Reboot to apply these changes.
FINALLY Setting Up The Desktop
First things first, we will want to configure GTK because the default keybindings are that of emacs- and ~~it stinks~~ gets the job done, but I don't prefer it. To switch to more normal keybindings, run the command
mkdir -p ~/.config/gtk-3.0
and then append the following to ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini:
[Settings] gtk-theme-name=Adwaita gtk-icon-theme-name=Adwaita gtk-font-name=Arimo 9 gtk-toolbar-style=GTK_TOOLBAR_ICONS gtk-toolbar-icon-size=GTK_ICON_SIZE_SMALL_TOOLBAR gtk-button-images=1 gtk-menu-images=1 gtk-enable-event-sounds=1 gtk-enable-input-feedback-sounds=1 gtk-xft-antialias=1 gtk-xft-hinting=1 gtk-xft-hintstyle=hintslight gtk-xft-rgba=rgb gtk-cursor-theme-size=0 gtk-cursor-theme-name=Default gtk-key-theme-name=Default
Now we need to copy the default i3status to /etc:
cp /usr/local/share/examples/i3status.conf /etc
Failure to do this will cause i3status to crash on launch.
Lastly, let's configure i3 to actually launch. Open /etc/X11/xenodm/Xsession in a text editor and go to the end of the text file. There will be a portion saying exec fvwm. Remove that line entirely and replace it with exec i3. Now search for anything in this file saying xconsole and remove it (this prevents automatic launching of a console in your desktop.)
If running Intel Integrated Graphics, it may be wise to do one final modification to prevent screen tearing. To do this, run the following command:
mkdir /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
This makes the xorg.conf.d directory. Now append the following contents to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/intel.conf:
Section "Device" Identifier "drm" Driver "intel" Option "TearFree" "true" EndSection
This configures OpenBSD to play more nicely with your Intel Integrated Graphics.
Finally, type reboot to reboot your system. You should be able to log in as your normal user and have access to i3 window manager. It will provide a "first startup" wizard to go through. If unfamiliar with i3, it is a tiling window manager that uses keyboard shortcuts to manipulate windows.
Once the configuration has been generated, we will need to configure i3 a bit further to allow for rofi and urxvt to work. To tweak these, we first need to edit our /etc/.Xdefaults file and add the following contents (note- this is the longest part of the entire task of getting a desktop working):
! === Rofi colors rofi.color-window : argb:c82d303b, #7c8389, #1d1f21 rofi.color-normal : argb:3c1d1f21, #c4cbd4, argb:96404552, #4084d6, #f9f9f9 rofi.color-urgent : argb:2c1d1f21, #cc6666, argb:e54b5160, #a54242, #f9f9f9 rofi.color-active : argb:2c1d1f21, #65acff, argb:e44b5160, #4491ed, #f9f9f9 rofi.font : Noto Sans 14 rofi.hide-scrollbar : true ! === URXVT URxvt*geometry : 80x30 "URxvt.font : 9x15 !Special Xft*dpi : 96 Xft*antialias : true Xft*hinting : true Xft*hintstyle : hintslight Xft*rgba : rgb URxvt.cursorUnderline : true URxvt*font : xft:Monospace:size=14:antialias=true URxvt*letterSpace : -2 URxvt.background : #1d1f21 URxvt.foreground : #c5c8c6 URxvt.cursorColor : #c5c8c6 urxvt*transparent : tue urxvt*shading : 30 URxvt*saveLines : 0 URxvt*scrollBar : false !black urxvt.color0 : #282a2e urxvt.color8 : #373b41 !red urxvt.color1 : #a54242 urxvt.color9 : #cc6666 !green urxvt.color2 : #8c9440 urxvt.color10 : #b5bd68 !yellow urxvt.color3 : #de835f urxvt.color11 : #f0c674 !blue urxvt.color4 : #5f819d urxvt.color12 : #81a2be !magenta urxvt.color5 : #85678f urxvt.color13 : #b294bb !cyan urxvt.color6 : #5e8d87 urxvt.color14 : #8abeb7 !white urxvt.color7 : #707880 urxvt.color15 : #c5c8c6
This chunk of configuration sets rofi (our app launcher) into dark mode, and changes the default terminal colors to be a little easier on the eyes with a dark theme instead of a eye-scorching manilla color... Only one change to go!
Wrap-Up
Open ~/.config/i3/config in your editor and go around 45 down. You will notice a section that says "Start a terminal". We want to change it's corresponding command to this:
bindsym $mod+Return exec /usr/local/bin/urxvt
This sets the i3 hotkey combo to execute urxvt instead of xterm.
Awesome! Since i3-gaps is installed, gaps between windows can be set up and configured if preferred. Otherwise, configuration is done, and you're able to install other software that you might want, such as Libreoffice, VLC, PCManFM, and other useful utilities (or games?)
Lastly, to set your desktop background, download a picture and save it to your preferred directory. In my case, it's located at /home/w00t/Pictures/wallpaper.png. Using my download location, I appended the following line to ~/.config/i3/config:
exec --no-startup-id "xwallpaper --stretch /home/w00t/Pictures/wallpaper.png"
Now my desktop wallpaper automatically sets itself on login.
There's other tweaks you can make- but this is meant to be enough to get to a system that's comfortable to work in and have an enjoyable time with OpenBSD. Until Next Time!

Hot take: iOS 14 – GSMArena.com news
Yesterday, Apple held its annual World Wide Developer Conference, where it announced new versions of all its major operating systems. Chief among these was the iOS 14 announcement, where Apple discussed a ton of new features that are going to find their way onto millions of iPhones come September.
After having watched the keynote and going through everything new in this update, it’s hard not to think of iOS 14 as one of the most influential updates that the platform has received in recent years and one that will matter to a lot of people going forward, especially those on the fence. What do I mean by that? I mean that this is probably the iOS update that is going to be the one that will make a lot of people jump over from Android over to Apple’s walled garden.
There are enough reasons to support this, but let’s talk about the things that Apple announced yesterday first. Apple came right out the bat with the changes to the homescreen and widgets, and I don’t think that was a coincidence.
For years, one of the common bugbears with iOS and the thing Android got right from version 1.0 was the homescreen. It’s difficult to believe that the iOS homescreen has remained largely the same since it was first demonstrated on stage by Steve Jobs back in January of 2007 at the now-defunct Macworld. A grid of icon is the first thing any iPhone, iPad or iPod touch user saw when they finished setting up their device, and it’s what they always saw no matter their personal preference.
Apple has been very strict about this over the years, never straying away from the formula even though the competition from Google and the various Android OEMs had clearly a more functional and flexible alternative. The homescreen sort of signified Apple’s approach to the mobile platform in general where it was very much ‘my-way-or-the-highway’ even though the intention behind it was always to keep things simple, even for the least technologically inclined among us.
But things change and so do people and Apple’s static grid of icon was no longer an adequate solution. Even long-time Apple users, who at one point may have appreciated the simplicity of the humble SpringBoard launcher had now started to get frustrated with the limited functionality on offer. And Android users, once they were done mocking the grid, would admit that the static homescreen was one of the things that would keep them away from switching to iOS.
Come September, that’s about to change. For the first time, users will have some flexibility with regard to their homescreen. You now have a makeshift app drawer in the form of the App Library, which neatly arranges all your apps in categories with a handy search function. You can now also just hide or clear the app screens even if you have apps on them as they are all inside the App Library anyway. And new apps will now go inside the App Library instead of instantly cluttering your neatly arranged homescreen.
But what really takes the homescreen in iOS 14 to the next level are the widgets. The widgets themselves are massively overhauled from their sad little former versions that lived in the left-most screen of your iPhone. All built-in iOS apps have a widget of their own and they have all been redesigned. Developers can also make new versions of their widgets and they can now come in different sizes.
Most importantly of all, the widgets can now be integrated within the grid of apps, something that Android has always been able to do. This means you no longer just have a static grid of icons and every person can now have a truly custom homescreen experience, which simply wasn’t possible before beyond just rearranging the icons. More importantly, it’s also a lot more functional and Apple even has some clever tricks like widget stacking that makes smart use of space.
So the homescreen is different. What else is new? Quite a bit, actually. Apple also finally relented and started allowing users to use their own browser or email app as the default. Prefer having your links open in Chrome instead of Safari? You can now do that. Want to use Outlook instead of Apple’s Mail app? You can do that too. It’s far from what’s possible on Android, where you can even choose your own phone, SMS, gallery, camera and music app but I think a lot of people are going to be happy with just being able to choose their own browser and mail app for now and Apple could always expand this functionality to other apps in the future.
Apple has also reworked how calls work on the phone. Previously, when you got a phone call, it would take up your entire screen and it would stay there until you manually dismissed it or the caller cut the call. Most Android OEMs have some form of floating notification to alert you of a call when you’re in the middle of another app. Well, now so does iOS. Any call, whether a phone call or from one of the VoIP apps on your phone, will not just show a floating notification on top, which can be easily dismissed. It’s easy to dismiss this as a silly new “innovation” (even though Apple never used that word for it) but it was always little things like these that made switching over to iOS just that much harder.
It’s the same with Siri, which no longer takes up your entire screen. In fact, Siri is just smarter now, with answers for a broader set of questions from various sources on the internet, being able to send audio messages and translate languages using the new Translate app in iOS 14. We don’t know how it compares against Google Assistant but Apple has clearly not given up on Siri.
Apple also updated the SMS functionality in its Messages app, and it can now automatically filter incoming messages based on whether they are transactions, promotions, or just junk. Some Android OEMs offer this functionality in their stock messaging app but most don’t, including Google. Considering SMS filter is the biggest reason to even consider a third-party SMS app, iOS 14 users won’t even feel the need to look elsewhere.
Apple also introduced App Clips, a feature that has been on Android in the form of Google Play Instant. In case you don’t know what that is, I wouldn’t feel too bad about it. Even though Google introduced this feature a few years ago, the adoption for it has been about as lackluster as most features Google introduces and forgets about.
On both platforms, the feature allows the user to use a particular app without having to install it first. A snipped of the app is downloaded to your device to allow you to use a part of the functionality, such as purchase something online using the website’s app. These mini-apps then disappear or you could choose to install their full version. For anyone used to using this feature on Android, Apple now has its own version that will likely see far more use and will have much, much greater adoption.
And that’s really the gist of this update. A lot of changes have been borrowed from Android, for the lack of a better term, but in the end, it doesn’t really matter. All that matters for you as a user is that there is now greater feature parity between the two platforms, which is great if you are already on iOS and also if you are considering moving over as you are now leaving behind fewer things.
It’s also about how Apple usually executes these features after it’s late to adopt them. Things like widgets and App Clips show a level of polish that has been lacking in their Android counterparts and from experience, we know for sure they would be far better supported by developers on the iOS side.
And we haven’t even really gotten into things that Apple does that you can’t get at all on Android. iMessage is a great messaging service used by millions of people and it’s only available on Apple’s platform. Apple continues to improve it and the latest version in iOS 14 is a major step ahead. Apple Arcade is a great place to find quality games that aren’t available on any other mobile device, just for the price of one monthly subscription. And although Apple TV+ is still trying to get off the ground, it already has some interesting lineup of shows, with more on the way.
But the real kicker is that iOS also has all of Google’s services available to it. Google makes all of its apps available on iOS and because they are made by a different team, they often get updated with new features even before their Android counterparts. The iOS versions of these apps are also often just better and show a level of care that is often mysteriously missing in the Android versions. You could move from an Android phone to an iPhone and still have your Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Drive, Google Docs, Google Keep, YouTube, and even Hangouts up and running in a few minutes and don’t miss out on anything. You can even use Google Assistant if you still don’t like Siri and now you can even use Gmail as your default email client.
And there are so many new features in iOS 14 alone that I haven’t talked about yet. Things like the great new Car key feature, which could be a game-changer if it trickled down to more cars. Spatial audio and automatic switching for AirPods, new Picture-in-picture mode, an enhanced system-wide search function, improved Maps, and a new Translate app, improved home automation, improved CarPlay, and just a ton of other features make this one of the most significant iOS updates in years.
It also goes without saying that a majority of iOS devices will get the iOS 14 update on day 1. Even Google’s smartphones don’t have a 100% track record of doing that, with other Android OEMs not even in the same picture.
With the launch of the iPhone SE recently, it became clear that Apple was gunning for the $400 market currently dominated by Android phones. The price and performance on that phone alone convinced some users to jump ship from their Android phones over to iOS. But with the launch of iOS 14, it’s clear that Apple really has Android users in its sight. It’s hard not to look at this update and be tempted even as an Android user. A practical one, at least, because unless you have some undying loyalty to the platform there are now fewer and fewer practical reasons to continue to stick to Android over switching to iOS if you are due for an upgrade.
Of course, this doesn’t mean you must switch from Android to iOS today as there are still plenty of good reasons to continue to be on Android. iOS, meanwhile, also continues to have its limitations, such as a relatively daft notification management system, and a locked-down approach to everything that irks some people. These are all things Apple can aim to improve for in future versions and if recent updates are any indication, we could see some changes sooner rather than later. But there’s no doubt iOS is improving a lot faster today than Android so while there have always been valid reasons to move from iOS to Android, there are now just as many valid reasons to go in the other direction.
That $400 iPhone SE just became a lot more tempting.

This review unit was sent to me courtesy of the lovely people at Videostrong, so thank you very much, and especially Emmy & Cheryl, for the help!
Videostrong Technology Co. Ltd. was founded in 1998. They produce a line of android based TV boxes and dongles, as well as hybrid boxes. Hybrid boxes are TV boxes which incorporate other abilities such as DVB tuners of different standards (T2, S2, ATSC and others) as well as capabilities such as HDTV recording (PVR).
KI Plus is one of the latest models which Videostrong put out, and they have delayed its release to get a more stable firmware working – which is appreciated. The advantages of KI Plus (aside from the Amlogic S905 chipset): integrated DVB-T2 and DVB-S2 digital TV tuners. Those allow reception of over-the-air standard and high definition digital TV transmissions, where available.
What’s in the Box?
As can be seen both in the unboxing video and the photo below, the package is pretty standard, with the DC power adapter, HDMI 2.0 cable, and standard IR remote control and user manual. It contain most all of what you’ll need, aside from a Digital TV antenna, which is not included.
Looks
The KI Plus is a rectangle made of black plastic, with the model name printed in white letters on top of it. On the left we can see the indication LED/Power button. The KI Plus can also be turned off and on from the included Remote control.
I also took screenshots of the Main and app screens, as they are different than the standard launchers usually included with these boxes:

Benchmarks and Testing
All benchmarks have been repeated 3 times and results have been averaged to give a more accurate reading:
Antutu Benchmark
The Antutu benchmark tests single core performance over multi-core as it is a better indication of the performance of one device over others in most situations. Antutu 6.0.1 crashed at the end of each run, although it did complete it. I also experienced sound artifacts (fast chirping sound) during the 3d testing, where music was supposed to be playing in the background. The results of the tests draw a mixed picture, where in the older 5.7.3 version, the box takes the very last spot of the S905 based boxes, but in the newer 6.0.1 version, it sits pretty in the middle.
GPU Mark Benchmark
GPU Mark tests 3d gaming performance and also provides a normalized score according to the used screen resolution (for a more accurate result). The test is quite short and should be taken as a supporting result to that of the more serious 3D Mark benchmark. Both graphs shows the same grim picture: This device is not optimized for gaming or 3d heavy tasks. In both it takes the place before last, coming only before the weakest device I tested so far.
A1 SD Benchmark
A1 SD Benchmark tests RAM and flash memory speeds. As can be seen in the provided graphs, RAM is much faster (by a factor of about 40) than flash memory – that is why it’s in smaller amount and is also volatile (does not keep its contents after a reboot). Here we see a mixed picture again, with the storage showing low results (in the last 4 places) while the RAM speed shows its muscle as it settles in the 4th place!
PC Mark Benchmark
The PC Mark benchmark test suite gives a more task/day oriented picture of performance. Things like photo editing, web browsing and video playback are tested. The KI Plus takes a nice middle seat as it shows it is more than capable at performing day-to-day android tasks.
3D Mark Benchmark
3D Mark benchmark is considered as one of the best ways to test 3d performance on Android (and other platforms). Interestingly, unlike GPUMark, 3dmark shows the KI Plus a medium score that makes it a descent box for casual gaming. This is supported by actual gaming I tested as mentioned later.
Video Playback testing (Using KODI)
Resolution Video Format Local Playback Network (Wi-Fi/LAN) Playback 720p (1280*720) AVC ([email protected]) Playing correctly Playing correctly 1080P (1920*1080) AVC (High@L4) Playing correctly Playing correctly 4K/UHD (4096*2304) AVC ([email protected]) Playing correctly Buffering and stutter 2160P (3840*2160) HEVC (H.265) Playing correctly Playing correctly 4K TS HEVC files HEVC (H.265) 10Bit Playing correctly only from Movieplayer app Does not play
There seems to be room for improvement in the playback capability of the KI Plus. Mostly when it comes to Kodi, as I experienced some instability with the customized version that comes pre-installed on the KI Plus. Bear in mind, this is an early production sample, and the device is not widely available.
I experienced some Kodi crashes out to the android desktop (or app list) and noticed that the KI Plus does not actually retain programs in its memory (most likely to keep better performance, as there is no task killer/memory cleaning app) – so if you would switch from Kodi out to the desktop (“Home” button on the remote), it will actually force close the app, and when you re-open Kodi, it will go through the initial splash screen and content update procedure again.
I also noticed that 10 Bit TS files do not play (at all) inside Kodi. I have tried Kodi 15.2 official release, Kodi 16 Beta 5, and SPMC 15. All had issues playing back content on this device, and one would not show video playback at all (16 Beta 5). The 10 bit content did play correctly in the included movieplayer app – but only locally as the app does not have network connectivity on its own.
This leads me to believe that the KI Plus needs some thorough work in regard to Kodi compatibility and stability.
Digital TV performance
This is a special addition, as this box supports DVB-T2 and DVB-S2 digital TV protocols, and does it well. This capability is accessible both from the app list, and from the remote by pressing a button labeled “DTV”.
It uses a special app that comes pre-installed, called “DTV”. Upon opening the app (each and every time) you’re presented by the choice of one of the tuners: DVB-S2 or DVB-T2.
You’re also presented, only on the first time, with the option of scanning for channels. You’ll need to make sure you get an external antenna (not included in the package) or have an existing digital TV antenna at hand. The scanning process was fast, and reception was quite great, even if I left the small antenna I used in the room rather than placing it outside the near window.
Picture and sound quality are both great, especially in HD, but standard SD quality is good and stable as well. Recording is possible – either to the (Micro)SD card, or to an external USB drive. This can be set in the app settings, and record schedules can be set from the EPG by clicking on the desired program to set recording, or within a program – clicking on the remote control record button to initiate. I have successfully recorded a test segment of a Full HD program.
I did notice two issues: the first being that certain HD channels could not produce sound, even though they recognized the audio track (usually AC3 encoding), and the second – de-synchronization between the video and the audio. The audio did slowly catch up with the video in time.
Issues and bugs
Kodi Add-ons did not always install properly at first time each time. Some required repeat attempts to get installed.
Google play games service crashes upon running, and so does not function correctly inside games.
Volume and/or information overlay comes up on kodi while playing back video without user interaction, occasionally.
10 mb bug is present. When attaching big capacity USB drives, they show as 10 mb drives, and do not allow file operations other than read.
Antutu 6.0.1 crashes out at the end of testing, and produces a weak chirping sound during 3d tests (when there’s supposed to be background music).
Digital TV – AC3 audio on some HD channels would not play sound.
The pre-installed Kodi 15.2 custom version proved unstable as it crashed out to the desktop several times, mostly when stopping playback, but a couple of times just while navigating the menu.
Other Kodi/SPMC versions did not work well on this box. They either showed a quarter screen playback image, no image at all, or had other issues.
Network performance
Network performance has been tested using Speedtest.net Internet speed measuring app, in WiFi and in Wired mode. My Internet connection is 200 Mbit Symmetric Fibre connection. The included WiFi is 2.4 GHz only (802.11n) and so is quite limited. Wired speed is good:
Wired, over power lines (AV500)
WiFi – 2.4 GHz
Gaming performance
I use an application called “GameBench” to measure frame rate and resource usage in games. The application did crash during testing, but I was able to run it long enough to gather resource usage information:
Asphalt 8 Airborne – a 3d graphic intensive racing game. The game run fine, but not completely smooth.
Angry Birds 2 – a popular 2d action game. Runs smoothly most of the time, with bits of slowdown both in-game and in menus.
Walking War Robots – an online robot warfare game that requires a game-pad (I don’t have a game-pad). WWR ran quite smoothly, but did produce an annoying static or distortion sound all through playing.
Conclusions
Did I like it? Yes, I did. The KI Plus is a interesting and good contender in the s905 crowded scene. The (now) standard s905 related issues are expected to be resolved in coming firmware updates, and this box offers out-of-the-box rooting (although I advise to install SuperSu to make the most of it). And then there’s the built-in Digital TV support. For many Kodi enthusiasts this box will give an almost perfect all-around solution which gives them crisp HD terrestrial digital channels which do not depend on internet availability on top of the good video decoding ability offered by the Amlogic S905 chipset.
Would I recommend it? Definitely. It has a few issues to patch up, but all in all it’s a great combined solution for a very good price.

Ubuntu Budgie Whistles Up a Better Remix
New Post has been published on http://thuocbacgiatruyen.com/ubuntu-budgie-whistles-up-a-better-remix/
Ubuntu Budgie Whistles Up a Better Remix
If you have yet to try the developing Budgie desktop, the latest release of Ubuntu Budgie is a perfect opportunity to experience a classy and user-friendly computing platform.
Budgie is one of the first home-grown Linux distros to release its latest version based on Ubuntu 18.04. The independent developer announced Ubuntu Budgie 18.04 last week, coinciding with Canonical’s release of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.
Canonical also offers a Budgie desktop option in Ubuntu Linux. However, the two Ubuntu-branded distros are not the same thing.
Ubuntu Budgie is maintained by a UK-based developer community. Formerly Budgie Remix, the Ubuntu Budgie distro is a desktop Linux distribution featuring the simple Budgie desktop. Ubuntu Budgie is not from Canonical.
The Solus community originally developed Budgie from scratch and tightly integrated the desktop user interface with the GNOME stack. Solus also offers the GNOME and MATE desktops. Ubuntu Budgie only comes in one flavor.
Ubuntu Budgie 18.04 is the community’s first Long Term Support release good for three years instead of the nine-month release cycle. This new release comes with numerous new features, fixes and optimizations.
The improvements include more customization options via Budgie Welcome, more available Budgie applets, dynamic workspaces, hot-corners and Window shuffler, plus a new GTK+ theme called “Pocillo.” You also get new applets as standard in the panel or available to be added via Budgie Settings.
Ubuntu Budgie Welcome Screen Ubuntu Budgie’s expanded Welcome Screen makes it very easy for new users to find what they need to get up to speed quickly. Showing Progress I have used the Budgie desktop with several Linux distros on and off over the last few years for a change of pace on a few of my secondary work machines. At first, I found Budgie to be a bit limited in what it offered.
However, with each new major upgrade, Budgie became more useful and flexible. It has now progressed to the point that it does not sacrifice performance in favor of simple design.
Ubuntu Budgie desktop settings Budgie desktop settings are easy to apply and provide an expanded set of options. I am particularly pleased with the latest release of Ubuntu Budgie. This distro’s implementation of the Budgie desktop has shown substantial growth in features and usability.
The developers are dedicated to mastering the user experience with just this desktop environment. That attention to detail has paid off.
Distro at a Glance Ubuntu Budgie comes with a choice of three stable releases. Besides the latest 18.04 LTS edition, you can install version 17.10.1 and the 16.04.4 edition.
The latest edition (18.04) has Long Term Support until Apr 2021. The previous edition, 17.10.1, is a standard stable release and follows the Ubuntu support cadence for three more months. The oldest available edition, 16.04.4, will receive community support only until the end of this July.
Ubuntu Budgie is available in 64-bit and 32-bit versions. Given the short support period remaining on the other two choices, go with the latest edition to get the best experience with the Budgie desktop.
The 64-bit latest edition works well with computers running 4 GB or more of RAM on both Intel and AMD processors. It also works on modern Intel-based Apple Macs. If your hardware has UEFI support, be sure to boot in CSM mode. In other words, turn off Secure Boot in the BIOS settings.
Minimum system requirements invite a wide range of legacy computers to the Linux party, including the following:
Pentium Dual Core 1.6 Ghz 2 GB of RAM 16 GB disk storage For better performance, your hardware should match these recommendations:
Pentium i3 4 GB of RAM 80 GB disk storage What’s Inside Out of the box, Ubuntu Budgie provides a complete set of applications for your daily basic computing tasks. The software center makes adding or removing applications quick and simple.
If you are inclined to be a software purist, you can spare yourself the manual labor by choosing the minimal installation option. It will give you a stripped-down install with just the Chromium Web browser and a few key utilities to get started.
You can elect to install third-party software for graphics and WiFi hardware components, along with MP3 and other media. You also can choose to download updates while installing the operating system.
If you bypass the minimal installation, you will get the latest version of the LibreOffice suite. Thanks to some tightly knit cooperation with Canonical, the installation process also bundles some useful Ubuntu-based applications:
spice-vdagent to improve performance in VMs such as GNOME Boxes and QEMU GNOME 3.28 applications; Nautilus 3.26 to ensure desktop icons support is maintained throughout the LTS period; Linux Kernel 4.15 to give you many fixes throughout the Ubuntu stack. Advertisement
Working With Budgie Budgie is designed for the computing experiences of modern users. Its display presents users with a simple and elegant design. It has a plain and clean style and is easy to use.
The Budgie desktop is not a fork of any other desktop project. Its designers planned for an easy integration into other distros, and it is an open source project in its own right.
Many of the limitations in earlier iterations of the Budgie desktop have been removed. Of course, those limitations were a tradeoff to simplify the user experience.
Budgie has an uncluttered design with little software bloat. To keep things simple and elegant, you still can not fully alter Budgie’s look and feel.
For instance, the desktop view remains uncluttered partly because you can not stick application icons anywhere. Another annoying feature of sorts is the inability to fully resize application windows.
One of my standard screenshot settings for distro reviews is to arrange a collection of interesting system tools or other running applications on the desktop. I still can not do that for the Budgie desktop. It is nearly impossible to squeeze in two reduced windows, especially if I combine the view with opened menu panels.
I still miss the ability to use favorite keyboard shortcuts, but I am much happier with the improved features for navigating among virtual workspaces.
So, there is a balance of good and not-so-good. Notice that I have not described these remaining limitations as bad things. Budgie just requires adjusting my workflow slightly.
Lay of the Land Parts of the screen layout resemble GNOME 3. A quick launch dock, called a “Plank,” hangs on the left vertical edge of the screen. You easily can pin application launchers there or remove them.
A panel bar sits across the top of the screen. It has a few nifty icons to drop down handy things like QuickNote, Night Light, and some standard system icons typical for most Linux distros. You easily can add applets to the panel.
Ubuntu Budgie desktop settings Ubuntu Budgie’s screen design includes a simple applications menu and functional top panel bar. Ubuntu Budgie’s main menu drops down from the top left. The menu is just as simple and uncluttered as the rest of the user interface.
Right-clicking on the desktop opens a limited menu with the ability to create a new folder, change background, open terminal window and organize icons.
The application menu has no cascading views. It is a two-column design.
The left column lists the application categories. The right column lists the individual apps in that category. A search window at the top of the two columns makes it easy to quickly locate any installed program.
Ravin’ Design At the heart of the Budgie desktop is Raven — an applet, notification and customization center. Combined with the system settings panel, it is the key to controlling the user experience through easy customizations.
To access Raven, use the super key + N key combination. You also can click on the Raven icon on the top panel bar. It slides out from the right screen edge much like the GNOME 3 virtual desktop display.
Within the Raven applet, click the Applets tab to access the controls for calendar, speaker and microphone. Click the Notifications tab to see unread system notifications.
Click the Setting gear wheel to open the Budgie settings panel. There you find two tabs: General and Panel.
Ubuntu Budgie strictly enforces the simplicity rule. Even the settings panel and the desktop right-click menu are neat and clean.
Bottom Line The Budgie desktop lacks the glitz and glitter found in more seasoned desktop environments. Animation is nonexistent.
However, this latest release makes good on Ubuntu Budgie’s promise to provide simplicity and elegance along with functionality. It goes further down the development pathway to improve on the simplicity to make Budgie a solid desktop choice.

Linux Life Episode 13
Well talk about a major turnaround this month I had really being finding it a slog using Linux. So I decided to run a few distros on the Xeon as it is now really a test bed machine as I have moved my primary machine use back to my i7 laptop.
So I tried Ubuntu Budgie, Zorin OS 12.3, Debian Stretch 9.4 and Netrunner Linux 18.03 all with varying issues and faults which put me off them. Either the software managers were glitchy or limited. Or in the case of Netrunner I really don’t like the KDE Neon menu system it’s horrid. I was about to give up but I had one distro left on the DVD pile.
That was Antergos Linux which is based in Arch. Now it had a good reputation but I had tried ArchSWAG previously and was not too impressed so my hopes were not setting a very high bar.
Antergos is an amazing system in fact I was so impressed with it after several hours of running it on the Xeon. I decided to install it on the i7 instead of the Ubuntu Studio 17.10 that I had been using for the last two weeks.
Being it is based on Arch it is an interesting system. Some programs you chose from the store and the Arch User Repository some will be already built and install immediately but some will build themselves from source.
Now building from source is always been an issue with most of my Linux experience but those in the AUR and all of the source pulled by the store is tested and confirmed working. Also it builds automatically meaning you don’t have to configure it yourself. Just Apply and wait for the build to be done by the system.
Its amazingly refreshing it may have a terminal but so far other than watching it build certain files with interest which you can do by selecting the Details button. I have only had to open the terminal to issue commands about three times and that was sudo commands to convert a Debian file to work with Arch using a program called DebTap.
It also is a rolling release schedule so it keeps the files right up to date. For example the kernel used by Ubuntu is still a 4.13 kernel in 17.10. Antergos is using a 4.15 kernel and is updated frequently. So it really keeps itself up to date and I like that idea.
I stated I converted a Debian file the reason being some programs take a little bit longer to reach the AUR due to testing. PencilSheep is a pretty new art program very Photoshop like which I was introduced to me by Ubuntu Studio but is only available in .Deb or .rpm which Arch does not use.
However a quick run through Debtap which converts the file into a setup that Arch can use and installed with Pacman (it’s the Package Manager but how can you not like a program called Pacman) and the next thing I have a fully working version of Pencilsheep running in Antergos.
Everything just seems to work and so far I have yet to find a major problem with it in any size, shape or form. It even managed to access my 3TB external drive being able to read and write files back and forth with no problems whatsoever, which no other version of Linux I have ever ran could do successfully. Antergos did not even batter an eyelid it knew how to handle it perfectly fine.
Now many may say I complain that Linux is techy and the OS building stuff from source does not get more techy. However it is totally integrated and seamless so very little intervention is needed by me. So far all it’s techy, it’s very user friendly.
As I said when I used SwagARCH it was far less integrated and I really was not a fan and it put me off Arch for a long time, but now I have discovered Antergos I have definitely become an Arch convert.
In fact I am slowly becoming a Linux convert, my usage of Windows is definitely dwindling as it seems so much slower than Antergos. I normally hit issues pretty quickly but so far I had one and that was not an Arch issue but a thing with Mate I am using as a desktop manager.
When I installed Thunderbird all the menus and dialogues were blank as was the text on screen. I asked at Mozilla but actually found the answer in the Antergos Linux forums Mate section. It was the post right at the top it may have moved now but I was astounded. Apparently Mate had set the Applications font to size 0 change it to a number greater so I set it to 9 and all is fine.
I even managed to get Minecraft and all the other Minecraft launchers such as AT Launcher, Feed the Beast and Technic Launcher to run as you can set up custom startup commands in the open command dialogue box as well as choosing the usual programs you can specify so I just set up a java -jar %f command and once you have set the executable flag in the properties it worked perfectly.
Steam and PlayonLinux was setup from the initial installer so that worked fine. One minor issue was upon initial launch Steam would not start but that was because I had a previous listing from my home directory which had been setup by Ubuntu. I deleted the .Steam directory and it all worked like magic so now big deal.
Now fair enough had you lots of games installed that would be a pain but I have about 4 games I play on Steam so I was not going to lose sleep to reinstall them. Took less than ten minutes.
As I said at the beginning I really was starting to find Linux a chore but Antergos really has got me back in the saddle and interested once again. So Congratulations to it. How long it will remain amazing I can’t really say but so far it has surpassed any expectations I had and keeps impressing me more and more each day.
I am sure the novelty will wear off but I am definitely finding myself using Linux more with this system, which is really odd as I was not the highest of advocates for Linux but it’s slowly creeping its way into my life.
Not completely Microsoft free yet but I am really getting that I very rarely use it now. I still use a couple of programs using Wine which you can see the icons in the above screenshot in the form of Photoshop CS6 and Foobar2000 but they are been used less and less as time goes on.
Anyway that’s enough for this episode. We will see where I am in the next episode. The podcast is in the works. I actually have stuff recorded now just need to finish the recording, edit them, add music and then publish. It’s on its way...
So until next time ... Take Care

HP Unveils World’s Most Powerful And Initial Detachable Computer Workstation
QMP style and manufacture to the highest normal a wide variety of Workstations. The $1,000 10-core model is quicker than all but two Xeon CPUs, according to PassMark , so the $two,000 18-core model should handily eclipse them all when it really is released later this year. HP has announced the company’s most strong workstation to date, the HP Z8 G4, as effectively as other models from the newly refreshed Z line. I will take some time to Google these around (Spending a lot more time on WC investigation then Air appropriate now, frankly), but let me ask you what I asked lowfat if you had to AirC dual Xeon’s, what would you recommend? OSHA inspectors cited the organization for violating section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Security and Wellness Act for directing personnel to eliminate diagonal structural members on communication towers without having making use of temporary braces or supports, and for enabling workers to be tied off to bracing that was not capable of supporting at least five,000 pounds.
With the new Intel Xeon processor W household, users from CAD to simulation will see application performance scaling. Some applications shortcuts are currently in the Unity Launcher (the button bar in the left of the desktop). Capable to efficiently serve the entire nation with our quick turnaround and fine quality furnishings, our workplace workstation choice is accessible from Atlanta to Seattle. It gives you an Intel Core i7 processor, up to 16GB of RAM to perform with, and a selection amongst a 500GB difficult drive or a 256GB SSD. Slot ekspansi BIOSTAR Racing Z370 GT6 terdiri atas slot PCIe 3. x16, 3 slot PCIe 3. x1 dan dua slot M.two dengan kecepatan transfer sampai 32 Gbps help teknologi Intel Optane. Save dual xeon workstation dual core to get e-mail alerts and updates on your eBay Feed.
The operation becoming requested was not performed simply because the user has not logged on to the network. Fitted with a prime of the line Intel Core i7 processor and 16GB RAM, this laptop makes no bones about its unprecedented efficiency. Privacy screening to workstations can be supplied utilizing modular, free-standing or desk-mounted screens. As noted, the single, higher clock cpu, may win out in a lot more single threaded scenarios, whereas the dual xeons, will win in the multithreaded instances. Featuring the newest Intel Xeon processors, massively scalable RAM, and 5 third-gen PCI Express slots, the HP Z Series Workstations are ideal for creative experts at the best of their game. Sign into your technique on the Computer or workstations (doesnt matter which) and go to your touchscreen with the Finish of Day choice.
Then apparently all the eight process gets assigned only to CPU1 and CPU5 (which are each at one hundred%, as reported by htop, and every process gets 25% of CPU time). Other than Foxit PDF reader, there is an Office trial and HP’s personal Remote Graphics Computer software, a clever piece of technologies that makes it possible for the user to access, share and broadcast from a Windows-primarily based device. The operation has failed because CSV volume was not in a position to recover in time specified on this file object. The hardware and software problems connected with the recent Computer workstation upgrade rolled out to missions need to also be taken into account (see paragraph 5.5.9). Some of our workplace desks are even developed to fit in a corner, so you can make the most of your workplace space.
While numerous hardening methods can be utilized for a kiosk method for guests, the PAW architecture is designed to supply higher security for higher sensitivity accounts, not higher safety for decrease sensitivity accounts. Like their predecessors, which stay obtainable, all of the new HP Z-series workstations function tool-less access. Desks with storage can be incorporated into a range of rooms in your house, from complete-sized computer desks in a home office, to a little perform desk tucked into your entry, or a family workplace desk placed well in your kitchen, it is all about your personal demands for placement and general size. It is one particular of the best-identified CAD (Personal computer-Aided Style) applications. As a side query, with regard to the limiting aspect in time to solution, I guess what I never actually know is how considerably time in the answer is spent with the cpu cores cranking away on the equations, vs updating the information in the RAM, but I’ll suppose for the time being that my CFD problem will be memory bandwidth restricted.

The Software Licensing Service reported that a token in the Token Store has a size mismatch. Consequently, promoting devices to consumers must be less of a challenge than Windows eight and 8.1 devices.
