Eternity, Bang Chan - 2024 // Eternity, Arthur Stace - 1932 to 1966.
In 1932, residents all over the city of Sydney started noticing something interesting, the word “Eternity” written on the pavement or wall, over and over again. The word was seemingly written by the same person each time, in a beautiful copperplate script. The mystifying and intriguing presence of graffiti before graffiti was commonplace had Sydney residents pondering who this "Eternity man" could be. In 1956, the mystery was solved- Arthur Stace, a former soldier and alcoholic, turned man of faith, had inscribed the word over Sydney's suburbs more than half a million times between 1932 and 1966. He chose to write the word in the early hours of the morning, when few people were around, managing to keep his identity a secret for over 20 years. Something about the word eternity, written in fleeting chalk on the ever-changing city streets, seemed to compel locals- Newspaper writers published account after account speculating on the identity of this unknown man and the occasional false confession helped to maintain the air of wonder and mystery that surrounded the anonymous "Eternity man". Even after his identity had been revealed, Mr. Eternity, as he came to be dubbed, continued writing his eponymous "Eternity" across the walkways and walls of Sydney for another decade, becoming a beloved character in the city until his passing at the age of 82, in 1967. Now, nearly 60 years after the final "Eternity" by Arthur Stace was written, his message of eternity still manages to permeate the minds of Sydneysiders- becoming a representative word of the city.
#As soon as I saw the music video was all him (and berry) walking around sydney and the song was called eternity I couldn't not think of this#and no one optimizes sentimental Sydney boy like Christopher Bang so.#Thus this idea was born.#stray kids#Bang Chan#christopher bang#bystay#skz#skzedit#stray kids gifs#skz gifs#sydney#arthur stace#cb97#funny how he wrote it in chalk and they've all long since been washed away- and he was poor and had no children#yet his little eternity signature means he'll be remembered a lot longer then he ever would have been otherwise#at the 2000 olympics they lit up an eternity across the harbour bridge in his writing#and there's a theater named for him too

I have a germ of a theory that good Christian fiction has stories that are less about shaving down your personality to meet some specific mold of what a good Christian looks like, and more about "how gloriously different are all the saints."
Not that the Christian life doesn't involve fighting against our own sinful nature and conforming ourselves to Christ-like behavior, but I think it makes for better, more realistic, and more universal stories when you also recognize that people have different gifts and flaws and they're going to be called to use their unique personalities to serve the kingdom of God in their own unique way, instead of assuming everyone has to conform themselves to a very specific (often secular-culturally based) image of good behavior. It makes for a much more vibrant story.
#catholic things#books#i'm still ruminating on charlotte yonge#because i usually contrast modern christian fiction with how the classics incorporated christianity#but she's the first classic victorian author i've found that i'd describe as writing christian fiction#which makes for a more direct comparison#she did handle religion in some very good ways#but i tried another of her books after 'heir'#and it reminded me of what i didn't like about the childhood section of 'heir'#but magnified a lot#she wants to show her children overcoming flaws#but she has a very narrow english anglo-catholic view of goodness#and that means her idea of christianity can come across as very judgemental and narrow-minded#things that are not actually sins in and of themselves are treated as moral failings inherent to other cultures#and the kids spend so much time worrying about cutting out sin that you don't get to see enough of their unique personality#i'd be willing to try more from her but i think i'd have to stick to the stories about adult characters

[ID: Two panels from Dungeon Meshi. The first scows Senshi clutching his face as tears start to spill out of his eyes, saying, "I've always... always wanted to have this soup one more time." He's not wearing his helmet in this panel, so his face is unusually visible, detailed and vulnerable. The second panel shows himself as a youngster, surrounded by his old mining team, all smiling at each other, one of them rubbing Senshi's head. Modern-day Senshi continues, "Thank you. All of you. Thank you." End ID.]
Holy shit. I anticipated some tragic backstory from the "I must feed the young ones" panels, but what I'd guessed was that Senshi might have become so devoted to cooking and eating literally whatever because he'd previously survived a famine and had seen children starve to death. I did not expect him to have been the child who was the sole survivor of a doomed travel party, one of whom was determined to feed Senshi first because he was the youngest, and that Senshi has lived with the fear of having inadvertently committed cannibalism by eating stew that he'd never quite known the contents of. I'm happy for him that Laios deduced and confirmed for him that it was griffin meat, that he was able to taste the meal that saved his life once more and remember the friends he lost. Seriously, I'm crying, and also earnestly relieved that while his backstory is pretty dark, it's not the type of fucked up I'd been preparing myself mentally for.
#Dungeon Meshi#Delicious in Dungeon#Dunmeshi#though it IS really worth exploring the ethics of cannibalism in survival situations#The podcast You're Wrong About has a really interesting pairing of episodes#in the Donner Party and Flight 571 Crash episodes#Both about disasters in which people wound up eating their dead to survive#and an interesting connection they drew was that it wasn't the cannibalism itself#that destroyed the lives of the Donner survivors#it was the horror and disgust and societal rejection they got for having eaten human flesh#even the children who had no idea what they were eating were treated with revulsion#and this is clearly the response Senshi feared facing if anybody knew what he'd eaten#But Flight 571 like a century later#the survivors were faced with a lot of understanding when rescued#relatively little condemnation and revulsion#by and large commentators acknowledged that they did what they had to do#and sympathized with how difficult and painful it must have been#which is what Senshi gets from his party#Laios wants to figure out the truth because he knows it's hurting Senshi not to know#But at one point Marcille straight up says that none of them would think less of Senshi if he did eat dwarf stew#Okay so this is Marcille 'ardent student of blood magic' Donato#but Chilchuck agrees#anyway I think that would be a particularly interesting conversation to have in a cooking manga#how do you safely eat a dead friend when that's all you have to survive on?#what are the nutritional benefits other than 'better than starving'?#what are the risks? There's prion diseases and all sorts you can get#they write it off as eating the dragon part but they DO spend seven days eating Falin at the end#ARE there any in/famous cannibalism cases in this world?#Do peopel argue about whether or not it's cannibalism if a dwarf eats a tallman?#enquiring minds (mine) want to know

Couple little things of reading to Leola, in three stages of quality. Realms Beyond Time isn't exactly at-age reading material, but it still sure makes her sleep.
Plus Discworld??? And The Dark Crystal??? (with friends)
Or at the very least, loving homages that could realistically exist 2000 years in the past. I should actually solidify what kind of stories Leola was told...
#TDP#The Dragon Prince#tdp leola#TDP Aaravos#tdp spoilers#y'all can look. Respectfully.#the age old tradition of traumatizing children with the Dark Crystal#I had to look for a preview of the novelization at the very least#Emergency sleepover provision of Y'all Wanna Listen to My Dad Read Something Horrifying But Fascinating???#Also have no idea how Discworld would work as a story but here's a Turtle World Legend anyway#It was so tempting to write 'You hear that sound#It would be the Agonizingly Long 'original' Princess Bride that most surely have put all those kids to sleep within the second chapter

It will be chaotic, because I can't force myself to make a structured post about it, I don't know why. Also sorry if my autocorrect does something stupid, I'm writing on the phone.
So, the Legendarium and causality, and good deeds, bad deeds and their results. This is the main topic of this post.
Is this post about the Legendarium? About real life? Both? Well, it surely is about the Legendarium, but not only. It's fuzzy. One of the things I like with tolkien is that such discussions get fuzzy and thinking about the books gives me insights about life.
There is a rule which I try to follow when writing or even planning something more serious (in the Legendarium context, but in general too, unless specifically going for a genre that's different): if a long-term success (in something that matters) is achieved by doing something morally wrong, those conditions must be fulfilled (not necessarily all clearly written out, but I must at least have a vague idea):
1. It could have been achieved in a good way, and it wouldn't be lesser. Or it wasn't really that important. (Because I refuse to accept "necessary evil")
2. Either something bad came out of it, or someone has to put effort into it not happening. I'm not sure how to explain it better (see later about handling other people's bad choices)... Anyway this makes the story feel more satisfying, more interesting.
3. How much of 2 is needed is proportional to how bad the thing was. Also if the character couldn't be expected to know much better, point 2 is less intense, though it's often still more interesting to have it.
I wonder how close to canon is this rule. Anyway I like it. Also, I tend to assume at least 1 when interpreting the canon, which likely influences my opinion about the Feanorians and the whole Silmaril business.
I'm not saying this is a 100% rule in real life, or even a technically 100% rule in te Legendarium, because omniscience is tricky… but it is a good rule in writing, I think, and even more so it definitely is a good rule in approaching decisions. If something can't work in a moral way, it won't work anyway or is not worth it. Nothing really worthy can be permanently lost by making the right choice. And so on.
It seems like there would be a symmetrical rule of good deeds not resulting in bad events but then we have the Children of Hurin. And what did Hurin do wrong? I have no idea.
But then, the Men are generally... And you could also look at Maedhros, but then, the exiled Noldor, and SoF in particular are also, hmm, I think "marred" is the word I should use here.
Still, I really prefer if there is something good coming of from good deeds, even distant and not seen by the person doing the good deeds.
Also, there seems to be is another rule, it's outright said. Things always turn out into a good ending, and you can either go with it or fall under it.
Example: gollum. He could have cooperated and jumped with the Ring willingly. He chose to betray Frodo, fell with the Ring anyway.
You also can, obviously, do a creative mix of going along and falling under. (Must I say: the two oldest Feanorians, it is this obvious?)
And falling under makes things more difficult for everyone, not just the person doing it.
Darn, I made this sound ugly and tyrannical. It's not. But I remember when I would say it is, and I can't explain why it is not. It's kinda like when you do a weird thing with your eye muscles and start seeing double. It's just not. I just can't explain it in a way this deserves. My apologies.
Anyway, bad choices make things difficult for everyone. Because we are connected to each other. I've already made a post about it long time ago, but generally...
Maybe if Saruman wasn't such a jerk weed have a Sauron redemption. (Maybe, it's always a maybe)
Maybe if Maglor didn't take pity on the twins, Númenor would fall much earlier and Sauron would be more successful. And so on and do forth.
It's always a maybe, and nobody determines anybody else's choices, but still, we do impact each other. It's hard to think about, because it's over if the places where a) it's worth to try b) there's no guarantee of anything... (Which are most places, I guess). Both on the Silm and in life, people are interconnected. But also everyone is responsible for their decisions.
It's hard to not blame characters (or people) too much. It's hard... In general it's wonderful but difficult, the whole concept.
And another thing tired to this very closely, tied to the interconnectedness (is this a word?) is unearned suffering and Hurin and Nienor and Miriel (both tbh) and Feanor back before he was a jerk and many others.
Sometimes we get the outcome of someone else's bs without even consenting to it. Why? I suppose it's because the connectedness is now important than "not getting random bs thrown in your life". Maybe. Probably. I'm not wise, ok? I'm not sure it's my heart, but something's telling me it's something like this reason.
And what can we do
Argue. Rebel. Just take it. There are many things we can do. I'm not going to go on a rant about what Feanor (or Finwe) should have done and so on because I don't want dfw and others to have a bad time listening to me criticizing their guy, and also I wasn't in his position so I shouldn't be ranting. I should go rant at myself or something.
But the things aren't going to solve themselves or disappear. So yes, just taking it is a very noble and beautiful thing to do (and hard as... Idk what's hard. A Silmaril is hard, I guess)
Because it's so very infuriating when someone else's bs lands on your head.
Oh how I wish I could handle it better.
Back to the Legendarium. Someone handling it better generally yields results, see: the Long Peace. And probably many other situations.
And of course there are situations when the bs you have to handle is your own and if you don't handle it, it will fall of everyone else's heads. This doesn't necessarily make it easier to handle. :( Sometimes someone helps, and that's nice.
Yet another question is how realistic a book should be.
Should it portray lots of undeserved suffering, of badly handled undeserved suffering (CoH), because it's part of life? Should it portray hope triumphing against reason (B&L, and remember that Beren was just as much a Man as Turin was), to give people an escape?
I think (maybe it's rather obvious) that we need both, because depending on personality and circumstances, we need both validation and acknowledgement of our pain, and hope that things can be better. Both kinds of stories are necessary.
It may sound untrue, and sometimes I wish I was a kind of person who can live with only hopeful stories, because the day ones are what I need when I'm not doing well— but no. We do need both, at least in terms of "what most of the story consists of". We need ways to express pain without an immediate answer.
It's a sad song.
But we're gonna sing it anyway.
Until we finally get it right and the sad parts start making sense.
And let's not even get into "sad stories where people mess their lives up so much because that's how freedom works, yes, they can do that" because I have absolutely no idea what to say about those.
#silm#silmarillion#tolkien legendarium#the silm#the silmarillion#Tolkien meta#idk how to tag moral philosophy? writing?#rambling#children of hurin#the problem of evil#kind of#many problems#really i have no idea what to tag on this#surprisingly no direct mention of morgoth#which is a rare situation among my posts 🤣#but obviously the whole context#arda marred#and things like that

this line makes me wonder how long hori has had their backstory in mind, because in even in 193 afo states that yoichi was the only family he had left.
so I wonder if hori had their backstory in mind from the beginning or if he only had a vague idea of what their childhood looked like at this point.
I wouldn't be surprised if he did have their orphaned as babies backstory in mind here because the backstory explains so much of afo's behavior and the comic book they read was first mentioned here so he had to have some idea of how they stumbled across the comic that changed their lives at the very least ...
#I also remember this line was used by a lot of people who theorized they were orphaned children#which yes they were right except the way they were orphaned and how their childhood turned out was far worse than anyone imagined#but idk I think he had it in mind here already considering he said he fleshed out the ofa holders back stories in detail long ago#so I feel he would have an idea of how afo and yoichi's background was when writing this scene#because this is one of the most important scenes in the story it's where everything started#we wouldn't find out the full story between these two until 5 years after this chapter first dropped though 😭#it's funny how people used to accuse you of woobifying afo if you said he prob had a sad backstory#and here comes hori with a chair giving him one of the most tragic backstories in the series lol

For you!!
❄️Share a snippet from a WIP of your choosing.
Oough, thank you very much for participating!! I thought a lot about what I should offer and eventually settled on this snippet from my very self indulgent Apollo/Evadne work teehee:
“So you returned.”
The stranger laughs, “As have you.”
Lo, he sits on the edge of the riverbank, his smooth, even-coloured ankles submerged in the cool water, the fabric of his skirt folded up above his knees. Somehow, the stranger’s gotten even more beautiful since she last saw him; gone are his loose, lovely curls which lay amaranth kisses onto his shoulders and neck, now they are bound atop his head and adorned with many petalled flowers. Likewise, his already flawless face now shines with the faint gloss of cosmetics. A deep blue colour stains his lips and the corners of his eyes. It matches the splendour of his blue skirt, makes her triply assured that this stranger is no mere man, but some visiting prince or king passing through. It is the only reason one such as him would ever willingly spend time with a creature like her.
Evadne clutches her veil tight as she stands beside him, makes certain that there is no way for a sudden wind to worry her cloth and reveal her shame. The stranger’s skin is so gorgeous, rich like a polished gem and just as smooth as its surface. Evadne’s never known a man so hairless! But then, the stranger has surely never known a woman like her either.
“Are you just going to laze about the edge today?” she says. They’re idle words, spoken just so she stops moping about when she’s got perfectly good company at hand. Gods alone know when she’ll ever have such a thing again. “It’s sweltering today, you’ll feel greater relief if you stick more than your toes into the water, sir.”
He laughs again, soft and calm. A quiet wind bustles over the water’s surface, he raises a fine-fingered hand to brace against the breeze. The silver bangles looped about his wrist make a melodious clatter as they settle one atop the other around the broad flesh of his arm. “I’ve no intention of disturbing you again. Just as I promised, your river is yours once more.”
His voice is just so… magical. Like music, or birdsong. Like some pleasant thing Evadne wishes she could hear forever. “I already told you, I am no nymph, good sir.” The very idea is just as ridiculous as the first time he said such a thing. As if a nymph’s spring would ever be so pitiful. As if Evadne would ever be allowed in the same waters as a lovely nymph! “I’m merely a maiden who wishes to bathe in peace. That is all I ever was.”
“Is that so?” Those calm eyes appraise her then, dark gaze roaming over each part of her fabric covered body ‘til Evadne is warm in the cheeks and hot all over. “When we were together last, you surely were— “
“W-What about you?” Evadne can hardly think past the heat in her face, the pounding of her stupid heart in her chest.
Miraculously, the stranger stops. “What about me?”
She squeezes her eyes shut, too shamed to even look at him when she speaks, “You praise my beauty when you have never even seen my face, but certainly with a face like yours, you must be a son of Desire or Beauty?”
The sweet wind blows. The river softly babbles on. Evadne slowly pries her eyes open and meets the grinning face of the stranger, beryl-bright eyes positively aglow with humour.
“You find me that good-looking, hm?”
She takes a step back, hands covering her eyes over her veil so she doesn’t have to look at the mess she created, “Maybe not quite that handsome— “
“‘A son of the Beauty’, was it? Such high praise. I’ll treasure it always.”
“Please forget such foolish words at once, sir!"
#ginger writes#thank you so so so much for playing mwah mwah#I LOVE EVADNE UGH#I'm so glad I got a chance to share something for her!! for them!!#My Evadne has vitiligo (which is very very common for children of Poseidon to have seeing as he himself has it)#she has some self image issues because of it esp because of how isolated she generally is w/h her upbringing#Anyway my idea of their dynamic is girl who cannot believe her boyfriend is THAT hot x guy who would literally fight god to protect her#(he is very chill)#Evadne is like an S+ tier simp - but she's also really well read and is pretty witty#anyway I love them love them love them and I have no idea when this'll be done just that my god given purpose#is to spread both Evadne and Cyparissus propaganda#teehee#apollo#evadne#apollo x evadne#greek myth writing#writing#yippee wahoos

Me, faced with a shiny new story idea: Save it for the Inklings Challenge, save it for the Inklings Challenge, please save it for the Inklings Challenge, I'm begging you please save it for the Inklings Challenge
#adventures in writing#the idea engine is warming up#by now i've got a certain sense of what kind of stories i generate for the inklings challenge#mash up one of the genres with another work or genre and create some half-baked world#the most recent is: the boxcar children as a portal fantasy#older sister and middle brother and younger sister the oldest no more than eleven or twelve#fantasy world royalty who flee from danger (probably an evil usurping uncle who wants to kill them like it's the aristocats)#and stumble into our world#and have to have all sorts of orphan adventures as they figure out how to survive#scrounging for supplies#setting up housekeeping in the woods or in some kind of abandoned building#figuring out our world and making friends#which they're going to need once the evil uncle's forces come after them#it would be so so middle grade and so derivative and such cheesy earnest fun#telling you about it now because it's the type of story idea that loses its luster in 24 hours#and i'll probably never write it#but also it can go on an inklings list and who knows#maybe three days before the deadline this one will pop up as a viable option for this year

hear me out:
clay/subject 16 having a kid he didn’t know about, or perhaps maybe desmond having a second kid he didn’t know about, or even william himself somehow had the rizz to accidentally make a second kid 😭😂
I mean… when the first chapter of Black Flag’s webtoon came out, Noa is shown to have Altaïr, Eizo and Ratonhnhaké:ton as his ancestors which led to the ‘ideas’ that he could be Desmond’s son. Of course, we also thought of the idea that he can be Bill’s son as well if having Altaïr as an ancestor isn’t based on the father’s side but on the mother’s side, since he does have Japanese and Korean and one of Altaïr’s grandchildren or even an older Darim could just as easily had a paramour in Japan while they were chasing after Genghis Khan’s children/grandchildren (the easiest being in Tsushima).
So, in this case, you didn’t specify if you wanted this to be a case of Clay, Desmond or, god forbid, Bill learning they have a child which gives me an excuse to focus this on Elijah XD
For this one, we’re dealing with the canon events in the eyes of Elijah. While the whole… Layla trilogy was happening, Elijah’s been busy laying low and building some sort of super computer that used cannibalized parts from all over.
With the skills and knowledge Aita provides him, Elijah is planning to recreate the Phoenix Project, but not for Juno.
Juno was…
A prototype. Something he did under duress while he was blinded by rage and desire for revenge.
Now, he’s rebuilding it to… well, at first, it was to bring back his mother but he later learned that it was impossible.
His mother was so inconsequential to the Calculations that there wasn’t enough data about her to bring her back even if he uses his own DNA. It still wasn’t enough.
So, he decided to pivot to trying to resurrect Desmond Miles instead.
He would say it was the only logical conclusion. Desmond Miles was the human who was closest to the Isus, not like Sages like him who were haunted by the memories of those who helplessly pathetically clung to life (and yeah, he is absolutely aiming that at Aita).
And Desmond Miles had enough DNA to be recreated with the access of the Calculations…
Because Sample 17 is a complete copy of Desmond Miles’ DNA.
So… after Elijah finished the device (improved from that garbage Juno’s cult modified from Abstergo), his next course of action was to get the original Sample 17.
During his investigations of where it could be, he learned that Abstergo had been checking for more people who had interesting connection to Desmond Miles and any other Animus Subjects.
That’s how he learned that he had a younger sibling (whether this one is a sister or a son is up to you) who was being held in an orphanage under one of Abstergo’s shell companies.
Whether this child is born from a night of passion or was actually created by Abstergo itself using… other means… is up to you.
Elijah has no reason to save this child he has no connection with. For one, he already ignored Noa Kim even when he had pinged in his radar because he knew the Assassins were already dealing with that one. All he had to do was tip the Assassins off and they’d find a way to rescue this child but…
The orphanage may have other clues that will lead him to the original Sample 17.
So he infiltrates the orphanage, found the clue he needed and…
… got back to his base with three children instead of one.
…
Sooooo…
Apparently…
The death of Desmond Miles had been the final straw that destroyed whatever feelings William Miles and his wife had with one another.
Oh, sorry.
Ex-wife.
While he was grieving his son and not doing any of his responsibility to the Brotherhood, William Miles had a…
Elijah felt like he was going to hurl…
… one night stand.
He has no dealings with William Miles.
He only had heard of William Miles.
But that didn’t mean he wanted to learn about William Miles’ sex life.
Regardless, when he got to the orphanage, finished his actual work, and went to get his ‘new’ sibling, he learned that…
1. Said sibling had a friend who must come with them if Elijah wanted to whisk them away.
2. Said sibling had been put in charge of a baby of all things who turned out to be William Miles’ second child.
Which means said child is technically his… aunt? Uncle?
Everything had been hectic since that was divebombed at him that he didn’t have spare time to check for something so inconsequential.
So now…
Elijah had become the guardian of three young children.
… he really needs to get the original Sample 17 so he can push all of these to Desmond Miles instead.
Unorganized Notes:
The main point is that Desmond is revived to find out that he does not only have one child, but two and a younger sibling as well as another child who is definitely Clay’s child (Elijah checked) so yeah… he was resurrected by a bunch of children (well… Elijah’s like… 18 by now)
Clay gets involved because Desmond’s resurrection still has him have a connection with the Gray where Clay is and Clay can connect with Desmond while he has a POE.
This will easily moved into Clay and Desmond trying to be good parents in their own ways and trying to raise three (four if you can Elijah who does not want to be counted) children.

Gripped with ideas but….. the panelling………….
#banging my head against the wall#Im probably thinking abt it too hard but ive never given much thought abt executing my ideas till now#usually I just get out as many things as I can in messy sketches but because this one has Structure and Unspoken Thoughts that need to be#conveyed properly using mood and emotion than words I actually need to be a little deliberate abt how I go about expressing it#i found some tips for composition and going thru my comics for reference and trying to line it up with what I have in mind#but the mood im going for is more of a quiet looming dread.. like. yknow when a bunch of bad memories start rushing out while your mind#is in the present. im thinking of having paralleling panels to kind of build on symmetry or making comparisons to a past experience#i was thinking of having another set of overlapping panels showing the characters reaction to those thoughts in real time like a pencil#slipping out of their hand and falling to the floor but I don’t wanna clutter the page too much so maybe not#I don’t have much experience writing comics I just like to read em.. I’m sure it’ll be at least decent for a first attempt. hopefully#that way I can build up confidence for my other zelda comic ideas heh#without saying too much….. the idea I have in mind is about fort hateno and children’s nursery rhymes ;)#yapping

Well, I didn't get any writing done, but I did watch the Wiggles documentary.
#look it was a compromise!#i was babysitting#these children were cranky and driving me nuts#this gives them music and me a documentary to learn things from#bad news: songs in my head forever#good news: actually pretty interesting#i'm always fascinated by the fact that no matter how strange or niche a type of art is#there's always people behind it#with ordinary lives and thought processes that go into what they make#and it was fun to see the very sensible and human ideas that go into creating something so wild#this wouldn't have been quite so shameful except that i kept watching after the kids were gone#instead of writing anything

📓 :3
:D!
@mortimerlatrice got me thinking about a KimChay Chrestomanci AU, so more of that.
the Chrestomanci series, sidenote, is an absolutely delightful fantasy series by Diana Wynne Jones. it's composed of mostly independent stories set in a universe of 12 parallel universes (called Series), each with their own string of worlds (except Series 11). generally speaking, every person has eight identical copies borne into other series than their own, but very occasionally all nine lives will be borne into one person. this nine-life enchanter has all the power of nine magical people in them and is therefore the only person powerful enough to fill the role of Chrestomanci to regulate magical use and prevent any abuse of it across the 12 series.
which cool, very fun story premise actually, but not what I care about here. I'm setting kp in one of the series that doesn't deal much with magic because I don't care about magic meet mafia, I care about Chay having nine lives and all the ways that could make things worse.
(cw: non-permanent but slightly graphic character death under the cut. ft a dash of actual character death, but that only applies to Tawan.)
Chay doesn't have all his lives when canon starts. he lost his first one the same day he and Porsche lost their parents when he fell out of his crib trying to investigate the noise. he lost his second to food poisoning, before Porsche started working for extra food money and they had to make every scrap stretch. he lost another when a debt collector hit him too hard and snapped his neck. (Porsche wasn't home for that day. Chay told him he wasn't either.)
Chay loses his fourth life in the warehouse. it actually wasn't intentional on anyone's part -- Tawan's hired meat weren't careful enough bringing him in, and Chay's luck has his head hit a curb or scrap metal at just the right (or wrong, as it were) angle to kill him instead of concuss him, and head injuries take so long to come back from. Tawan drags out the charade because he wants Porsche desperate, not angry, and Porsche is in too deep of denial to accept the possibility of Chay actually being dead not to fall for it.
Kim arrives before Chay comes back to life. it's...bad. Porsche is screaming for him to get Chay out. Kim first checks Chay's breathing. failing to find that, he frantically (but carefully!) hauls Chay upright. that's when Chay's head flops limply to the side and reveals the dried blood down the back of his neck, which Kim had already felt grabbing but refused to process.
Kim sees red.
Tawan knifes Big. Porsche's shouts break through the fog threatening to overwhelm Kim. then Tawan gets one very distraught, very angry, very murderous Kim materializing in front of him and going right for his eyes. it doesn't matter that Tawan's the one with a weapon, he could've had an armory and that couldn't have helped him. Kim is very, very, very good at fighting, and he's on a mission to hurt. but he's also missing his control, and kicks Tawan in the kidney so hard Tawan stumbles back into a pile of scrap and, in true irony, jostles it hard enough the end of steel beam falls on his head. as discovered earlier, metal and concrete are not kind to heads, and bullet proof vests certainly can't protect from that.
it's too quick and too kind, and Kim stares at him disbelievingly, half a mind to drag Tawan out and beat out the little life he's surely still clinging to, when Chay groans. Kim first thinks he hallucinated it, but then he sees Chay move and he's so relieved he was wrong that he shoves everything else out of his mind and just gets Chay out. then everything and one trailing shouty Porsche slams back into him the minute Chay's out of his arms and with the paramedics that Kim bolts to go hide in a dark corner in his apartment and fail to process any of it.
Chay misses all of this btws. He was dead, then he was back with a headache, and he loves Porsche but he needs Porsche to please shut the fuck up and get him some tylenol.
then apartment confrontation, where Kim says I'm sorry and shoves off even quicker because all he can remember are those moments when he'd been so sure Chay was properly dead. club scene goes down even worse when Kim yells at Chay for making stupid reckless choices that could get him killed, and Chay demands to know why Kim even cares, and Kim goes pale with anger that Chay doesn't care that he (only nearly, surely) died, and it's all very terrible and ends in them storming away from each other.
then comes Yok's bar.
Chay dies. Kim had taunted them into a direct fight inside instead of picking them off outside, and it should have been fine, would have been fine, had Chay not had a bit more awareness and looked over to see Kim pinned between two guys and rushed to help only to get shot by one of the goons on the other end of the bar. he bleeds out while Kim kills off the rest.
Chay comes back to a bar full of bodies and Kim (clutching) cradling him. Kim isn't crying. he isn't really doing much of anything other than clinging and staring off into nothing with a thoroughly haunted expression.
Chay blinks and tentatively lays his fingers against Kim's cheek. "Kim?"
Kim's eyes snap to him, but still don't quite see him. he stays looking blank for a few seconds that feel like hours before saying matter-of-factly, "I've snapped."
"Kim!" Chay protests, distressed.
"It's okay," Kim says, still matter-of-fact but smiling tenderly, "better to be mad with you than without."
it takes a while to convince Kim he's not insane and that Chay's really back. Chay's not certain he fully manages it. but his death also shook loose a lot of confessions Kim normally couldn't say out loud. ("why--" Chay starts, voice cracking, "why did you say 'I'm sorry' that day?" / "You were supposed to be safe," Kim replies hoarsely, mad smile slipping for tears.) there's more clutching and clinging, this time by Chay too. both of them manage to forget they're in a bar of dead bodies until Porsche and Kinn come crashing through the door.
"Chay!" Porsche yells when he first sees him.
"Chay," Porsche pleads brokenly when he sees Chay's blood soaked shirt.
"Not mine!" Chay says quickly, and would've been given away by how fast Kim's head snaps around in any other circumstance. "See?" he says, raising his shirt to show unblemished skin, "No injury."
this does a lot to reassure Porsche, but Chay can tell Kim still thinks he's a little bit insane. Chay decides that's fine for now, because dying takes a lot out of you and apparently everyone around you too and it's unfair to expect Kim to just bounce back from him bleeding out on him, he'll work on it after a shower and dinner.
I'm not writing this AU because I only really have these two vague scenes in my head, but Chay having multiple lives making his existence in the mafia hurt more than canon's calls to me, it really does.
oh, also: in the AU source material, one of the nine-lifers has one of his lives removed and stored into a ring for safekeeping. he later gives this ring to his to-be-wife as her wedding ring. I'm not sure yet how to work that into this AU because Chay's contact with magic and other magicals would be slim to none in this, but please picture how this would absolutely wreck Kim, because there's nothing Kim wants more than to safeguard Chay but as far as he's concerned, he's already failed Chay in that regard twice. 😈
[[ ask me about fics im not writing ]]
#kinnporsche#kimchay#ask game: fics im not writing#this idea is fun but im only really here for vibes#and i already have many similar vibes in timeloop AU so im gonna stick with that one but like...so much fun 👀👀#ANYWAYS vague possibility for how chay meets magicals: in charmed life they mention looking for a 9-lifer off world/outside of series 12#chay's that 9-lifer in this case#originally not the candidate they wanted because he's in a different series AND a non-magical world to boot#then he gets involved with the mafia and all these government officials go Uhm#christopher: what's the problem i smuggled black market goods for years as a kid#government officials: uHM?!#christopher musing to himself: and that resulted in gabriel getting blown apart for a few days hmmm maybe not#christopher then meeting cat post apple scrumping: are all nine-lifers simply criminals as children??? is there no hope for us???????#i love Very Specific AUs made for an audience of me and 1.5 people can u tell 😂

From @elmushterri's amazing gunntech au
This is an oc based on how I think many people would respond to how Gunn Tech treats the children and as a contact for Nori to help him and Ninjalinos to escape and to adopt some GunnTech orphans after the story.
Liêm "Liam" Đỗ is a rogue GunnTech Guard and a contact for Nori [(because Nori definitely got inside people)] with a deal to free [his] niece from Gunn Tech. He knew about GunnTech before [his] niece was put into the program but applied as a guard soon after her placement. Unlike his sister, he has a strong moral code and hates GunnTech's schemes. His least favorite moment wa learning of the "culling" room and subsequently why he must play as a pawn for a monster. He often gave candy to the kids at Gunntech but was reprimanded and threatened to stop. He was previously a guard at a mall, medical research center and a school.
I wrote some extra stuff, and drew a design for both the man and his clothes including a GunnTech guard uniform for both the first few seasons and the finale seasons.
