Sonic Cyber Revolution, Entry 37: Breaking The Fields

Silver and Makoto weren't completely sure how to approach the situation. They knew that them being stuck at Sky Canyon was most likely Dr. Eggman's doing. However, given how easily they had defeated the Boss of the Zone, it felt a bit out of place. The good Doctor wasn't usually this sloppy.
''Makoto, watch out!'' Silver suddenly shouted when their environment started glitching out and the platform below them disappeared. Fortunately for both of them, Silver used his psychokinesis to keep them afloat.
''That was close! Thanks, Silver!'' Makoto said, with Silver giving them a thumbs up before landing them safely on another platform. However, just as they landed, their environment started to glitch out once again. Feeling alarmed, both looked up at the flash of light before them, revealing itself to be a cyan diamond-shaped gem. Both of their jaws dropped as they realized what they were looking at, with Makoto breaking the silence. ''That's a Chaos Emerald! But, how?''
''I don't know,'' Silver replied, reaching for the cyan gem. He could feel it's energy crackling through his fingers. He glanced at Makoto with a confused look, fishing for an explanation. ''I mean, we did beat the Boss of this Zone, so maybe this is our prize?''
Before Makoto could answer, there was another flash of light, this one being green, with Shadow and Touka suddenly appearing before them, and Shadow still holding the green Chaos Emerald.
''Shadow!''
''Touka!''
The two siblings were surprised to see Silver and Makoto, but also pleased to see that the Chaos Emerald-enhanced Chaos Control worked properly. Nevertheless, there was a question on their mind.
''What are you doing here?'' Touka asked.
''We were a moment ago with Lily and Knuckles, who had asked us whether we had seen Rouge because she hadn't appeared for a while, and in the next moment, we found ourselves in Sky Canyon,'' Makoto explained. ''What about you?''
''We were helping out Tails and Warren, when we suddenly found ourselves in…'' Touka paused, only to resume. ''Okay, I don't know what the name of that place was, but it had a lot of snow. I'm just glad that we got somewhere with a moderate temperature.''
Shadow just rolled his eyes at her remark, with Makoto adding, ''Well, if you guys were in a snow filled-zone that is also from the Sonic Advance series, just like us, you were either in the Ice Mountain Zone from Sonic Advance, Ice Paradise from Sonic Advance 2 or Twinkle Snow from Sonic Advance 3.''
''We have more important things to talk about than names of Zones,'' Shadow suddenly interrupted them, pointing at Silver. ''I see that you also got a Chaos Emerald.''
''Yeah, we got it after beating… the Egg Saucer?'' Silver turned to Makoto, who nodded. He then turned back to Shadow. ''What about you?''
''We were confronted by Dr. Starline,'' Shadow explained, with Makoto and Silver being surprised to hear that name. ''He was piloting a mech, probably made by Dr. Eggman. We managed to defeat him, but it seems that my Chaos energy reacted with the AR Field and caused the Chaos Emeralds to appear.''
''Then we can use the Chaos Emeralds to escape this place,'' Silver said, elated to hear that there was a solution to their problem. Shadow then shook his head, his arms folded across his chest.
''I'm afraid that it is not that easy. The AR Field is quite unstable and one has to be very careful when using Chaos Control. I had tried to warp Touka and I out of it, but we landed here instead,'' he explained.
''Then, maybe we need all 7 of the Chaos Emeralds. Also, if you are trapped here and this is another of Dr. Eggman's schemes, this must mean that maybe the rest of the team is trapped as well,'' Makoto said. ''We cannot travel through Zones by any normal means, but we can use the Chaos Emeralds for that.''
''Well, you two can do that,'' Silver said, holding out the cyan Chaos Emerald to Shadow and Touka. ''I don't even know how to use Chaos Control.''
Shadow stared at the cyan Chaos Emerald that Silver was offering to him, then glanced back at the grey hedgehog, clearly assessing the situation and their options. If their assumptions were correct, their teammates were all separated and it would take some time to find them, even with the Chaos Emerald, as surely Dr. Eggman would try to intervene. Shadow then held up his hand, showing that he wouldn't take the Chaos Emerald, much to Silver's confusion.
''I will give you a quick crash course on using Chaos Control. You will be able to utilize it with the Chaos Emerald, even if you had never used it before,'' Shadow replied.
''B-But…'' Silver wanted to protest, feeling that this was something he wouldn't be capable of, but after seeing Shadow's grim gaze, he then nodded. ''What do I have to do?''
''You can use the Chaos Energy within the Chaos Emerald to sense the presence of other Chaos Emeralds, and you can let this sensation guide you,'' Shadow explained. ''All you need is to focus, and you will be able to find them.''
Silver nodded, holding the Chaos Emerald and focusing on the Chaos Energy within. At first, it was quite overwhelming, as he never felt something like this before, but as he got used to this new power, he could feel something tugging him to several sides, unsure which path to follow. He assumed that one energy signature, the strongest one, was the Chaos Emerald Shadow was holding. So he tried to focus on the other energy signatures, finding one that was much further from him. It was like a thread hanging in front of him, and all he needed to do was to reach for it.
''I think I got it,'' Silver said, opening his eyes. Shadow nodded.
''You and Makoto will go there then,'' he said. Silver smiled, with both him and Shadow holding up their hands, arms crossing.
''CHAOS…'' Silver started as the energy around them crackled.
''CONTROL!!!'' Shadow roared, with a blinding light engulfing the whole group.

Tails and Warren had to leap each towards a different side to avoid Silver Sonic's attack. It appeared that the robotic version of Sonic seemed to have some kind of regenerative ability, as no matter how powerful Tails' EMP field was, the robot would always stand up. They needed to find another way around it.
''Any ideas?'' Warren asked, him and Tails hiding behind a metallic pillar and flinching when Silver Sonic lost sight of them and smashed a different pillar.
''I'm not sure. I'm not as good at combat as someone like Sonic or Knuckles…'' Tails said, only to realize that admist all of the chaos he had forgotten that he was still wearing his backpack. He quickly took it off, starting to rummage around it.
''Watch it!'' Warren grabbed Tails, running off to the other side of the Zone as Silver Sonic smashed into the pillar they were hiding behind. Whatever was left of Chaos Surge had already faded, leaving them quite vulnerable. However, Warren was given a small toy-like laser gun by Tails, who then reached for another gadget in his backpack.
''Keep him busy, I have an idea!'' Tails said, starting to tinker with the electromagnetic discs. Warren used Tails laser gun to fire at Silver Sonic, surprisingly managing to get a few good hits, but the robot seemed to be unstoppable. When he got too close to the two, both managed to slip away, with Tails slapping the disc onto Silver Sonic, while Warren took the other and put it on a piece of debris, then pushed it off the edge of the Zone. The magnetic pull was so strong that Silver Sonic followed it, falling off the platform.
''All right!'' Tails cheered, him and Warren high-fiving in relief, especially since Silver Sonic didn't return this time. However, as they celebrated, they saw a flash of light, revealing a diamond-shaped yellow gem that landed in Tails' hands.
''T-That's a Chaos Emerald!'' Warren stuttered in shock.
''A Chaos Emerald?'' Tails replied in a stunned state. ''But, how is that possible?'' Before any of them could continue their conversation, they were met by another flash of light, revealing two familiar figures. ''Silver? Makoto? What are you doing here?''
''It's a long story, but from what we've figured out, Dr. Eggman and Dr. Starline have trapped us here and we need to collect five more… well, four more,'' Makoto corrected himself upon seeing the yellow gem in Tails' hands, ''Chaos Emeralds. Touka and Shadow got one already.''
''Shadow also taught me how to use Chaos Control with a Chaos Emerald, and if we collect all of them, we'll be able to escape this place,'' Silver explained.
''Where are they?'' Warren asked.
''They went to another Zone. Shadow had figured that it would be easier for us to collect all the Chaos Emeralds if we split up,'' Silver explained.
''Okay,'' Tails nodded. ''Let's see what we can find.''

Knuckles punched Mecha Sonic, sending him flying across Sky Sanctuary with ease, almost causing him to fall off the platform. Mecha Sonic barely held himself onto the edge of the platform, when Lily suddenly appeared, having found a metallic rod and giving him an apologetic look.
''This will hurt me more than you,'' she said, swinging the metallic rod at Mecha Sonic, knocking him off the platform. Knuckles approached her, looking rather satisfied with the result.
''Nice job,'' he said.
''Oh, please, that was all you,'' Lily replied, with both being surprised by a sudden flash of light. Above them, a diamond-shaped purple gem appeared, falling right on Knuckles' head. Fortunately, he managed to catch it before it fell over the edge of the platform.
''Huh, what's that?'' Knuckles stared at the gem, which Lily immediately recognized.
''Knux, that's a Chaos Emerald! That's one of the most powerful gems in the world!'' she said, looking quite awestruck. Knuckles rose an eyebrow, turning it in his hands.
''Why did this appear before us?'' he wondered.
''I don't know… I mean, this is an area from a video game. Maybe we got rewarded for beating Mecha Sonic?'' Lily suggested. Before their conversation could continue, a flash of light appeared, revealing itself to be Shadow and Touka. ''Woah, what are you two doing here?''
''It's a long story, but we are currently in an AR Field created by Dr. Eggman and Dr. Starline, and the rest of Team Neos is also trapped here, and the two Doctors are probably going to try to collect the Chaos Emeralds,'' Touka quickly explained. ''We already came across Makoto and Silver, and they're on the search for the others.''
''How many Chaos Emeralds did you manage to gather?'' Knuckles asked.
''Two so far, but with you, it's three. If Silver and Makoto had managed to find another, then we'll have four out of seven,'' Shadow explained.
''How did you even manage to travel between Zones?'' Lily asked. ''We tried to leave Sky Sanctuary to get to Hidden Palace Zone, but we were just teleported back.''
''It appears that one can travel between the Zones via Chaos Control,'' Touka explained.
Just then, Sky Sanctuary suddenly started to shake, with their surroundings glitching out, only for a crowd of EggRobos to surround them, as well as Mecha Sonic reappearing, but this time in a golden colour, having returned as Super Mecha Sonic Mark II. Above them, flying in a smaller version of the Egg Mobile, was Dr. Starline.
''You again!'' Touka shouted, with Dr. Starline grinning at them.
''Surprise! I had figured that I should get back-up. Maybe you two can take down a whole mech, but what about getting outnumbered?'' he said. Knuckles and Shadow took a battle stance, with the echidna glancing at Shadow.
''That's Dr. Starline?'' he asked. Shadow nodded. Knuckles huffed. ''He doesn't look like much of a threat.''
''He may not have a mech, but I would still be cautious,'' Shadow warned the echidna, being on guard.
''It doesn't matter how cautious you are, I will make sure to take you down and bring those Chaos Emeralds to Dr. Eggman!'' Starline told them, smirking. ''Then, the Doctor will have nothing but words of praise for me!''

''Okay, question; how do we find a Chaos Emerald here? We saw that one just appeared in front of Touka and Shadow,'' Lucas said, as he and Sonic searched Green Hill for the elusive gem.
''Well, this is a location based on a video game. Maybe we have to follow video game logic,'' Sonic replied.
Lucas rose an eyebrow, wondering what Sonic meant. Technically, they were trapped in some kind of infinite loop of the Green Hill Zone, unable to break out, which is why they needed the Chaos Emerald. However, they also needed to figure out how to make one appear, and if they went by video game logic, then they would have to enter the Special Stages, but as noted above, that was impossible. Nevertheless, there was something Lucas noticed as he observed the screens showing his friends.
''We would have to beat the Boss of the Zone… However, we know that this Zone doesn't have a Boss due to what Dr. Eggman did…'' he trailed off, exchanging glances with Sonic. ''Actually, maybe we just have to pass the Goal Plate.''
Sonic snorted. ''That would be the easiest way of getting the Chaos Emerald. As a matter of fact, it's too-'' Sonic stopped, seeing the Goal Plate in front of him. Last time he and Lucas passed it, they found themselves back at the beggining of Green Hill. Nevertheless, both sped up and passed it. ''Easy?'' To their surprise, there was a flash of light, with a blue diamond-shaped gem appearing before them, with Sonic snatching it out of the air. ''Okay, Eggman really should've put some Badniks around to at least give me some kind of challenge.''
''Well, that not our problem anymore,'' Lucas replied. ''Now, how does one use Chaos Control with this thing?''
Both him and Sonic fell silent, as despite Lucas' knowledge of the lore of the Chaos Emeralds and the various Chaos-related abilities, they still had no clue how to properly use it like Shadow and Touka did. Sonic just stared at the Chaos Emerald, as if expecting it to do something, weighting in his hands carefully, before shrugging.
''Well, all I can do is trust my instincts,'' he said. Lucas gave him a dubious look.
''I hope your instincts won't make us permanently trapped here,'' he said.
''Heh, just trust me, I know what I'm doing,'' he said, holding up the Chaos Emerald. Lucas couldn't help but roll his eyes, even though he did trust his partner with his life. ''CHAOS CONTROL!!!''

Amy had managed to catch up to Metal Sonic, trying to hit him with her Piko Piko Hammer, only for Metal Sonic to block it and grab her hammer, throwing her backwards, leading to the pink hedgehog landing right on Minami. Due to being fueled with the power of Chaos Surge, Sonic's metallic rival was much stronger than before. However, neither Amy nor Minami were ready to give up, having overheard the conversation about the Chaos Emeralds between Ferra and Dr. Eggman.
''You two should really should know when to give up!'' Ferra said, her whole body crackling with energy. The same energy surrounded Metal Sonic as he prepared to blast away the two, only for a blue flash of light to appear right above them. Metal Sonic and Ferra could only look up before something heavy fell right on top of them.
''Aghh...'' Sonic fell his head spin and his body ache, but he was still happy at the results, clutching the blue Chaos Emerald in his hand. ''Nailed it!''
''Ugh, what was- huh?'' Lucas' dazed look was quickly replaced by surprise when he realized that he landed right on top of Ferra, while Sonic landed on Metal Sonic. ''I guess this might count as defeating the Boss of Stardust Speedway?''
''Get off me!'' Ferra shouted at him, kicking Lucas off of her, with Metal Sonic doing the same to his organic counterpart, although with a lot more force. Sonic rolled over before getting into a battle stance.
''All right, Metal! If you want to fight, we'll fight!'' Sonic said, still clutching the Chaos Emerald in his hand. Lucas, meanwhile, went over to Minami and Amy.
''Are you two okay?'' he asked.
''Yeah, but how did you get here?'' Amy asked.
''Sonic used Chaos Control,'' Lucas said, pointing at the blue gem Sonic was holding, then noted the questioning looks Minami and Amy gave him. ''I'll explain everything later, but what you need to know is that all of Team Neos is trapped in different Zones of this AR Field and we're trying to find the Chaos Emeralds before Dr. Eggman does.''
''How many do we have?'' Minami asked.
''From what I've seen, two are missing. We need to find the Chaos Emerald of Stardust Speedway,'' Lucas replied. The three then turned towards Sonic, who was currently locked in a brawl with Metal Sonic. Not only was Sonic's robotic counterpart after the blue Chaos Emerald his rival was holding, but he went back to just trying to beat up Sonic for the sake of beating him up.
Ferra, on the other hand, seemed to have spotted something, and Lucas saw the same. He grabbed his hoverboard and shoved it into Minami's hands. ''Get the Chaos Emerald! I'll help Sonic!''
Minami and Amy, who both took note of Ferra's behavior and her taking off towards the far end of Stardust Speedway, having spotted the red Chaos Emerald, quickly got on Lucas' hoverboard and sped off without a word. Even though Ferra had a headstart, Lucas' hoverboard was much faster thanks to the modifications Warren and Tails added.
''Com'n… Com'n!'' Minami hissed under her breath, hoping that her and Amy's combined weight didn't slow them down. Ferra turned around, spotting the two going after her and gaining speed. However, Ferra was incredibly close to the Chaos Emerald, reaching out for it…
''Oh, no you don't!'' Amy leapt from the hoverboard, throwing her hammer at Ferra, causing her to stumble and fall off. She was then caught by Minami, with both reaching for the red diamond-shaped gem. ''Yes!''
''No!'' Ferra cried out furiously as Amy held onto the Chaos Emerald, while Minami just gave her a smug look.

Dr. Eggman rubbed his temple as he watched the screen of the Egg Mobile, being annoyed to see that Dr. Starline clearly underestimated the combined force of Knuckles and Shadow, both equipped with Chaos Emeralds, and groaned when he saw Ferra failing to acquire the red Chaos Emerald. Even though he had faith in his Enforcer, he had to admit that he expected failure to some extent. He knew that it was a tragedy that Team Neos managed to get six of the Chaos Emeralds, but he still had a chance. There was one Chaos Emerald remaining and Dr. Eggman knew exactly where to find it.
As it turned out, there was an area between all AR Fields, a so-called no man's land that connected to each of the AR Fields, containing the glitches and bugs that formed thanks to Shadow's Chaos Energy and the place of origin for the Chaos Emeralds. It certainly looked nothing like the other Zones, but was more of a mish-mash of all of them, with the grey diamond-shaped gem being placed on a stone pedestal in the middle of the Zone.
''Ho ho ho… even if Team Neos managed to get all of the other Chaos Emeralds, they still cannot escape when one Chaos Emerald is missing,'' Dr. Eggman said, lowering the Egg Mobile to get to the pedestal, only to get startled by a flash of light, with Silver, Makoto, Tails and Warren having a hard landing.
''Ugh… That hurt…'' Warren said, rubbing his head.
''Sorry, I guess I miscalculated,'' Silver, who was holding onto the cyan Chaos Emerald, replied as he rubbed his head.
''At least we got out of the Death Egg Zone,'' Tails said, holding onto the yellow Chaos Emerald.
''Dr. Eggman!'' Makoto gasped when he realized that they weren't alone.
The rest of the group looked up, surprised to see Dr. Eggman hovering above them. Dr. Eggman was fuming at the sight of them, having hoped that they wouldn't find out about this Zone.
''I will not let you ruin my plans!'' Dr. Eggman growled, pressing a button and unleashing a barrage of homing missiles, forcing Silver to raise a cyan barrier with his psychokinesis to block the attack. Dr. Eggman took advantage of this, pressing another button that caused a mechanical claw to be lowered and snatched away the grey Chaos Emerald from the pedestal.
''Oh, no, he got the Chaos Emerald!'' Makoto cried out. Dr. Eggman laughed as he flew away, well aware that they will be now trapped forever here, only for the laughter to stop when Tails flew towards him, hanging onto the claw and trying to pry it open.
''Get off the Egg Mobile, Prower!'' Dr. Eggman yelled at the twin-tailed fox, who desperately clung onto the mechanical claw. Dr. Eggman started to drive the Egg Mobile in an erratic manner, hoping to shake Tails off.
''Chaos Surge!''
Much to Dr. Eggman's horror, the Egg Mobile was stopped by the combined power of Silver and Makoto's psychokinesis, who were keeping the vehicle in place. Tails grinned, managing to get the grey Chaos Emerald out of the claw, and now holding two of them flew back towards his friends.
''No! How dare you steal from me?!'' Dr. Eggman growled.
''We know exactly that we cannot trust you with the Chaos Emeralds, so we're taking them with us!'' Warren replied.
''Then I'll make sure that you're going nowhere!'' Dr. Eggman shouted, pressing another button. Suddenly, the whole Zone shook, with Silver, Makoto, Tails and Warren staring at their surroundings in horror. Dr. Eggman laughed, well aware that he just activated a program to close the AR Field. If they all didn't get out as soon as possible, they would be erased from existence along with the collapsing AR Field. ''Enjoy the afterlife!''
Dr. Eggman then vanished from the AR Field, clearly retreating. A sense of panic enveloped the four as they realized that they were now on a timer.
''The whole AR Field is collapsing! Silver, can you warp us to the others?'' Tails asked. Silver nodded, although panic was already setting in.
''I-I can… But there are two energy signatures I'm detecting,'' he said, only to shake his head. He wasn't sure which path to take, but he needed to pick one immediately. ''Everyone, stay close!'' He held up the cyan Chaos Emerald, focusing on what seemed to be the stronger energy signature. ''CHAOS CONTROL!!''

Sonic curled into a ball, performing a homing attack on Metal Sonic, who managed to quickly dodge it. His sensors detected that his own Chaos Surge was running out of power and if he wanted to get rid off Sonic once and for all, he needed to be quick. Not only that, but Sonic was also holding onto the blue Chaos Emerald, and since they already lost the red Chaos Emerald to Amy and Minami, he needed to at least get that one.
Metal Sonic targeted his organic counterpart, firing several blasts from his chest. Fortunately, one of them managed to hit Sonic, causing him to fall on the ground. Metal Sonic rushed over to grab the blue Chaos Emerald, but Sonic managed to throw it towards Lucas, who caught it.
''If you think that we'll give you the Chaos Emerald, you're dead wrong,'' Sonic told his metallic counterpart, who shot him a glare, then suddenly rushed over to Lucas. The teenager's eyes widened, and he managed to dodge Metal Sonic, then started to run towards Sonic, with the robot being on his heels.
However, before Metal Sonic could swipe at Lucas, the whole Stardust Speedway shook, and it looked like it was falling apart. Ferra, Minami and Amy were also stunned by what was going on, with Ferra getting into contact with Dr. Eggman.
''What is going on with the AR Field?!'' she asked.
''I decided to close it! Get out unless you want to get yourself killed!'' Dr. Eggman replied, disconnecting the call. Ferra felt her heart race as she realized that the AR Field would collapse all around them, and turned to her partner. ''Metal, we need to leave! NOW!!''
Despite wanting to complete his mission and beat up Sonic, Metal understood the urgency in Ferra's tone. He flew over to her, with both then vanishing from the AR Field. Meanwhile, Minami and Amy joined Lucas and Sonic, noting how the roads all around them were collapsing.
''We don't have all of the Chaos Emeralds!'' Lucas pointed out, giving the blue Chaos Emerald to Sonic. ''We need to find the others before we get trapped here for good!''
''I think I know where to find the others! Hold on tight!'' Sonic said as his friends gathered around him, holding the blue Chaos Emerald up. ''CHAOS CONTROL!!''

''Chaos Spear!''
Siphoning the energy from the green Chaos Emerald, Shadow summoned a barrage of Chaos Spears, flinging them towards the EggRobos, shattering each and every one of them. Next to him was Knuckles, who gave the purple Chaos Emerald to Lily so he was free to fight Super Mecha Sonic. The Sonic look-a-like curled into a ball, flying towards the echidna. Knuckles braced himself, attempting to punch the robot, but was instead sent flying and landing on the platform just at the edge. He was fortunate that he didn't fall off. He saw Super Mecha Sonic flying towards him once again, summoning an energy ball and firing it at Knuckles. The echidna managed to roll over, dodging it, then getting up and rushing towards Super Mecha Sonic. However, before he could land a hit, Super Mecha Sonic suddenly glitched out and vanished.
''What?!'' Dr. Starline was shocked to see that the robot was gone. ''This was not supposed to happen!''
The screen before him suddenly crackled and he was surprised when Dr. Eggman appeared. ''Starline! The AR Field is collapsing, so unless you want to get killed, get out!''
''B-But, Doctor-! The mission-!'' Dr. Starline stuttered, but the screen already went black. The whole Sky Sanctuary Zone shook, slowly vanishing out of existence, with the data particles fading away. ''No, no, no! How could you do that, Doctor?! We need the Chaos Emeralds!''
''Chaos Blast!''
Dr. Starline cried out in panic when Shadow's Chaos Blast hit the Egg Mobile, causing it to fall and the platypus Irregular hit the ground hard. He sat up, feeling numb from the impact, only for his eyes to widen in horror when he saw Shadow and Knuckles approach him, both with murderous looks on their expressions.
''I guess I should listen to the Doctor,'' Starline muttered. As much as he wanted to fulfill his mission, he valued his life more. He could try again another time. Quickly pressing the top of his glove, he vanished before the dark hedgehog and red echidna could murder him in a brutal fashion.
''Darn it, he's gone!'' Knuckles growled, with Shadow turning to him with a grim look.
''We have more pressing matters to worry about,'' he said, pointing at their surroundings. Touka and Lily had joined them, taking note of how the floating platforms were falling into the dark abyss below.
''We need to find the others and get the rest of the Chaos Emeralds,'' Touka said in an urgent tone. ''That the only way for us to escape!''
''Right, but how are we going to find-'' Lily started, only to be startled by a flash of cyan light. To their relief, they saw Silver, Makoto, Tails and Warren.
''We got three Chaos Emeralds!'' Tails shouted, his group rushing over to them. ''How many more- Agh!''
The platform they were standing on suddenly tilted, forcing the group to run towards the next platform. They were all breathing heavily, their surroundings becoming smaller and smaller as Sky Sanctuary was falling apart. They exchanged glances, only to get startled by a flash of blue light, with Sonic, Lucas, Amy and Minami appearing before them.
''Guys, are you-?'' Sonic was cut off by Shadow, who had managed to gather the Chaos Emeralds from Knuckles, Silver and Tails.
''Ask questions later, Sonic! We need to escape!'' he growled, with Sonic nodding, him and Amy giving up their own Chaos Emeralds. The seven gems started to surround Shadow as he focused on their energy, now far greater than the one he sensed from just one Chaos Emerald. A bright glow surrounded him and the rest of Team Neos as their surroundings grew darker and darker, turning into an unending void. ''CHAOS CONTROL!!!''

There was a blinding flash of light, with Team Neos losing all sense of direction, only to find themselves a moment later back on solid ground. Feeling somewhat dizzy, it took them a bit to recover. Sonic was the first to break the silence, rubbing his head.
''Woah… Hey, we're back at the workshop!''
The rest of Team Neos looked around, realizing that, indeed, Shadow had warped all of them back to the Taylor Workshop.
''Thank goodness that we got out of that AR Field,'' Amy said, taking a deep breath, with the rest of the group agreeing with her.
''Yeah, I don't want to repeat this experience,'' Lily said, glancing at Shadow, who was currently being looked over by Touka. It seemed that using the Chaos Emeralds like this did affect him as well.
''Shadow, how are you feeling?'' Touka asked. Shadow just shook his head, getting up.
''The Chaos Emeralds are gone,'' he said. This caused a moment a silence, with the group exchanging confused glances.
''How could they just vanish?'' Minami asked. Tails, who got up, reached for the Miles Electric in his backpack, having kept it on during this whole adventure.
''I think I may have an answer…'' he said, connecting the Miles Electric to the computer and analyzing the data. ''Since the Chaos Emeralds were created inside the AR Field, once it ceased to exist, so did the Emeralds. I would have to put a bit more time into this, but it seems to be the most logical outcome.''
''So, even if we attempted to take them out of the AR Field, we wouldn't have been able to do so?'' Silver asked. Tails nodded in response.
''Well, that's good news. This means that Eggman wouldn't have been able to take them either,'' Sonic said.
''Yes, but wouldn't he be able to re-create the AR Field and the Chaos Emeralds?'' Knuckles asked.
''I doubt it,'' Lucas said, drawing everyone's question. ''Sonic and I saw that the Chaos Emeralds were a result of Shadow using his Chaos-based powers, so unless Eggman had access to Chaos Energy, he wouldn't be able to repeat this on his own.''
''So, it's over?'' Makoto asked. Lucas nodded.
''It's over.''
Team Neos was quite relieved to hear that their adventure was indeed over. While this was quite an exhilarating adventure, they all just wanted back to their normal life.

''Doctor, why would you cause the AR Field to collapse? We could've taken the Chaos Emeralds!'' Dr. Starline said, completely baffled by his idol's decision.
''As it turns out, that wasn't possible after all,'' Dr. Eggman responded, pointing at the screens behind him. ''The Chaos Emeralds were a by-product of the AR Field and Shadow's Chaos Energy. Even if I attempted to replicate what happened, I wouldn't be able to do that without the hedgehog.''
''So, this whole mission was a failure from the start?'' Dr. Starline asked, quite disappointed. There was a sigh coming from the other side of the room, the source of it being an annoyed Ferra and Metal Sonic. To everyone's surprise, Dr. Eggman grinned.
''Oh ho ho ho, on the contrary, Dr. Starline; I believe that this mission was quite important. We know now that it is possible to create Chaos Emeralds, and while we don't have the means, we do have the necessary data for that. So, I wouldn't shelve this plan yet,'' Dr. Eggman replied.
''Ah, so it was a success then!'' Dr. Starline said, clasping his hands, looking quite happy with the news.
''Indeed,'' Dr. Eggman replied, sitting down in his chair as he observed the data on the screen. ''All we have to do is to take advantage of what we know.''

Rouge shivered as she crawled through the air-vent, tugging at the golden collar around her neck. She knew that she was in a very dangerous place and that she needed to escape, but for that, she needed more information and a way out. She was trapped in this place, and all she could do was to spy on those who have trapped her here. She managed to come across an opening at an office, hearing voices coming from it.
''This is the autopsy report from the Sakamoto case.''
There was a pause as the other person in the room, a man with dark grey hair and wearing a grey and dark green uniform read the autopsy report the agent brought him.
''So, the Professor had indeed died from blood loss, and his body was moved. Have you managed to track down where his body was before someone tampered with it?'' the man, who appeared to be a quite high-ranking officer.
''Unfortunately, we haven't,'' the agent replied, with his superior frowning. ''We are doing our best to find Hiroshi Sakamoto's murderer.''
Rouge felt chills flowing down her spine as she overheard this. She did not have pleasant memories associated with that name.
''What about Project Shadow? Have you managed to track down the Irregular?'' the man continued. Rouge gasped, quickly covering her mouth and hoping nobody had heard her.
''It appears that Miss Kageura had been keeping him at her house. We don't know how he was found, but it is possible that Touka may have been able to recall her memories,'' the agent replied.
''I see…'' the man furrowed a brow. ''Get them over here. We believed that Project Shadow was a waste of time, but perhaps the weapons project may end up being a success.''
Rouge felt sick to her stomach after hearing this. She wanted to warn Shadow and Touka that they were in grave danger, but that was impossible, especially with her current situation. She just hoped that they would be able to avoid capture.

He cares more about being the smartest person in the room than the lives of those he's outcompeting
Still..
I don't think he'd be a "bad" dad
Ofc he knows how kids are made, how to hold them, bathe them, feed, and generally care for
But he's not an emotional parent by any stretch
He'll try, because you're his! You have so much potential, just because HE'S your father!
Taking you to museums and expos so you can learn while outside of the house
Teaching you as many big words as he can, because extension of vocabulary is VERY good for intellectual growth!
Having any day he wants be "take your kid to work" day so that you can see exactly what your father does, how great he is at it, and what you'll be expected to do..
Seeing a pattern?
He doesn't explicitly believe that nature is a more prominent tool than nurture, but he's trying to raise you to be a mini him
He has high expectations for you, and ofc he'll be disappointed if you can't keep up
And with him being primary caregiver, there's no way you'll grow up with a healthy self-image, or your emotional needs being met.
Still, all of your physical and medical needs are being met, so only the social/emotional aspects of your childhood are being ruined!
Enter Agent Stone
He sees what's going on and resolves to fix it for the good of you, Robotnik, and his own moral conscience
Encourages the doctor to take you to the park, or movies, or, well.. anything that's not *just* math or science related
Your father agrees..
The first few times
Unfortunately, he truly is a busy man with a difficult job (to any lesser man, ofc)
So Stone offers to take you himself.

Doctor Robotnik glanced up as the door opened, a quiet laugh meeting his ears. Brow furrowing, he went to investigate..
As he rounded the door into the entrance hallway, he was met with a curious sight, at least to him. His little lab partner, laughing as Agent Stone followed them through the doorway. Stone's hands were occupied with bags printed "THANK YOU" as many smaller businesses have, and Tiny Robotnik kept a tight hold on the man's pant leg, as though trying to pull him into the hall.
"-And then they started making pictures!"
"I know!" Stone's voice was airier than usual, as many adults' seem to be when talking to excited children. "You know, your dad works with laser-produced images all the time."
"Yeah.." (Y/n) stuck their bottom lip out, pouting. "But he only uses them for work! They made stars and planets and animals! Not just.. numbers."
Robotnik frowned slightly. Were they really that impressed with a laser light show? His child had seen what he worked with on the day-to-day, and not to toot his own horn, but his designs were far more functional than any of those moving pictures on the sides of old buildings.
"Doctor?"
He looked up from his thoughts, eyes meeting Stone's. (Y/n) hadn't seemed to notice him until this point, jumping ever so slightly as you turned to grin up at him.
"Papa!"
"Little one!" He picked them up, a smile pulling at the sides of his lips. "Did you enjoy yourself with Agent Stone?"
"Mhhm! We watched the light show, then went and got dinner!"
"Local grocery had a nice selection of hot foods, pick and choose."
Little (Y/n) grinned, turning to flash a smile at the Agent as well. Robotnik chuckled quietly, pulling their attention back to himself.
"Well, I'm glad you had fun. Now, go get yourself cleaned up and into bed, okay?"
Their smile fell slightly. Disappointment, he presumed, quickly flicking the thought out of his mind.
"Okay.."
(Y/n) turned back to Stone. "Night-night, Mister Stone." Back to your father. "Night-night, Papa." And turned to another door, little feet patting on the hardwood floor.
"Goodnight, little one."
A few moments passed as both men watched the child turn the corner, then the door clicked shut. It barely took another heartbeat before Robotnik turned to Stone.
"How are you so good with them?"
The agent turned quickly, brow furrowing.
"What do you mean, Doctor?"
"Little (Y/n). They smile and laugh whenever they're with you.. I haven't seen them laugh like that in a while."
A few beats passed between the two men before Stone chuckled.
"They're human, Doctor. Even though (Y/n) is yours, they're a completely different, unique person from yourself.. even if they have your intellect -"
"They do."
"- They may not necessarily want to get into the sciences like you did. What if they're a lawyer, or teacher, or writer? What if they're an artist or actor? What happens if they don't choose any career at all, and decide they want to live in the woods and play survivalist for the rest of their life?"
Robotnik blanked.
Then he blinked.
"I... Being unsuccessful is completely out of the question!"
"Who defines success?"
"Who.. what?"
Stone took a tentative step closer to the doctor.
"What if their version of success is different from yours?"
He blinked again, heavily, finding it difficult for once in his life to think.
Sighing quietly, he let his eyes meet Stone's again.
"What should I do? To ensure their success.. to ensure their version of success is met?"
Agent Stone smiled gently.
"You nurture them, Doctor."

That post will age poorly when you inevitably watch HoTD and post about it
You must be new here.
The only reason I ever watched GOT was because of Daenerys. I thoroughly enjoyed other characters like Bran and Arya, but really, what kept me invested the whole time was Dany's storyline. When there were episodes without her, I itched for the next episode so that we'd see her on screen again.
I have zero interest in the world of ice and fire without Dany. Had Season 8 gone differently, I might be somewhat excited for HOTD. But I still wouldn't be hyped for it the way GOT used to get me hyped because Dany's not in it.
I'm hardly familiar with any of the actors in HOTD. I know Matt Smith was in Doctor Who, but I never watched it. In fact, the only thing I have actually ever seen him in where I remember him is a single episode of Secret Diary of a Call Girl, which I didn't even get to enjoy the reference because again, I've never watched Doctor Who.
I'm not excited about Miguel Sapochnik showrunning because of the shit he's said about Dany's character, and I can only assume if that's his opinion of her, then he likely has a very low opinion of Rhaenrya as well. And though I'm not invested in Rhaenyra as a character, I side with her on principal. But how can I get excited about watching her character even, when we already know her terrible, unfair fate?
I mentioned in a YouTube comment recently, there is absolutely no point to House of the Dragon as a television show other than for the flash and the spectacle. For fans of the original series, it holds nothing new. At least a Long Night adaptation would have given fans more information on the world of ice and fire because we didn't get any of that background in GOT.
But HOTD gives us nothing new. All that story is contained within Fire and Blood, and because of GOT's abysmal ending, there is no point to me in investing in Targaryen characters when their House was shit on by D&D. For fans of Targaryen history, I'm sure the show has appeal and those people are probably the ones who stick up for GRRM taking his time with TWOW and spending his time on these other spin-off projects. But that has never been me.
The only reason I even purchased Fire and Blood was because I was hoping it held some sort of insight into Dany's foreshadowed ending because GOT S8 hadn't come out yet.
The only reason to watch HOTD, I think, is because it's big-budget live-action fantasy. And though yeah, I am a fan of that genre, I now have plenty of other shows to choose from. Witcher Season 3 just started filming (and unlike fans of the books or video games, I have no problem with the show). I really liked Wheel of Time Season 1 and am looking forward to Season 2. Witcher is getting a spin-off Blood Origin that comes out this year that I'm interested in watching.
So why would I deign to watch this spin-off series when 1) I have many other things to invest my time in, and 2) the original series gutted me, and 3) involves characters I have absolutely zero interest in? Believe it or not, it is possible to just, not watch popular or incredibly hyped series when you don't have an interest in them, and there are plenty of them out there that I have yet to watch and likely never will. House of the Dragon is just one of them.

You aren't related to Wolverine.
Your mutant thing:
The Lioness
Genetically made in a lab. A test subject. You were originally human and made mutant. They made your bones into metal like Wolverine and Laura.
You have enhanced everything really xD, cat like. Your finger nails grow into metal claws along with your toe nails, your quick and self healing.
You stared at the TV, you hadn't seen one in a very long time. You flicked through the channels admiring the moving picture. Your leg bounced though and your heart was too quick. You kept looking out the window every minute hoping no strange men would show up again. Your mind always flashed back when you looked outside. Flashed back to the moment you were stolen from your home.
“Y/n!” you heard a hushed cry. You jolted away seeing your mother crawling in. You shot up and went to her, her stomach area full of blood.
“Mum!” you said but she covered your mouth.
“Run” she whispered as her eyes closed. Lights blared in through the windows and the doors. Men shouted and footsteps echoed up the stairs as something hit you. Your body swayed your world blurry as the men continued shouting and rummaging.
You awoke with agonising pain throughout your body. You cursed and tensed trying to move. You heard panicked shouts around you as your world blurred again and went dark.
The second time you awoke was too soft beeping and less agonising pain. You felt a numb throb all over but that was it. Your eyes wouldn't focus and you kept rolling your head side to side.
“She’s awake sir” you heard a woman speak.
“Good” a man this time answered. Your eyes finally focused, it looked like a hospital room only- more creepy. You looked around saw needles in your arms as your heard sped up.
“What’s going on?” Your anxiety was kicking in, you hated doctors, hated needles.
“What’s happening?!” You shouted pain glaring through your knuckles.
“Sedate her now!” You heard as you began to thrash and cry. It was too late though the woman had injected something into your drip bag, the clear liquid going to a more creamy colour. You stopped thrashing, your words were slurred as you fell asleep once more.
You snapped out of your day dream as a car pulled up, you frowned seeing a man step out confused. He was in a large limo car, the hell is he doing here? You watched a woman come out and froze. The man didn’t want any part of her apparently as they fought, you saw a young girl also. You went outside your senses on edge.
“Sorry ma’am” the man spoke to you making you flinch.
“Y/n Y/l/n” you turned to the woman who spoke your name.
“You’re alive” she whispered.
“Do I- do I know you?” You asked as glass shattered.
“Hey! I told you to put that ball away!” The receptionist woman came out. The other woman gushed at her begged her to leave the girl alone before she sighed and went inside.
“My name is Gabriella” she said to you.
“I don’t know you” you said.
“I know you were under medication while I was with you” you froze, she was a nurse? Maybe a doctor?
“The hell you do to me?!” You snarled rushing forward.
“Hey!” The man stopped you a strong hand on your upper chest. You hissed at him and he raised an eyebrow.
“I didn’t do anything! I was just a nurse, I was told to write notes, I worked at two facilities” she said making you frown. You were breathing heavily that uncontrolled rage boiling. You backed away from the mans hand glancing to him.
“What were they doing to me in there?” You asked.
“I know you have many questions, please come with us to North Dakota, Eden” she said making you frown.
“What’s Eden?” You asked.
“A safe place for your kind” she said and you flinched.
“My kind? I was a normal human before this fucking thing!” You snarled again.
“Calm down!” You glared at the man who shouted at you.
“All right let’s all calm the fuck down” he said as you paced.
“We need to leave now” the Spanish woman begged.
“Now please, 20 grand now and 30 when we get there” she said directed towards the man.
“Please Logan!” She begged.
“I’ll be back” he grumbled snatching her phone and putting something in it, a phone number probably.
“Thank you” she whispered as you stood there.
“Y/n” she called and you looked to her.
“Please come sit” she said beckoning you over to her room.
You sat with her trying to remember her face out of your brief moments of consciousness.
“I helped you get out, I dosed your medicine made you go into a frenzy in a sense and you escaped” she said making you sigh.
“What- what am I?” You asked.
“A mutant” she said.
“No I’m not mutants are born not made- this is a fuck up” you huffed leg bouncing again.
“Mutants are gone, almost all of them Laura here and other children were genetically made” she said softly pointing to the sleeping child.
“What’s she then?” You asked.
“She has Logan’s DNA” She said.
“The man with the big car?” You asked and she nodded.
“He’s a mutant?” You asked again and she nodded again.
“The wolverine” she said and you froze.
“The-“ you stuttered and she nodded.
“Your DNA is like his but they changed it somehow” you blinked at her words.
“Laura is his daughter” she said and you looked to the child.
“What does that make me?” You gulped.
“No, no your aren’t related, different genes different DNA” you let out a small sigh though it didn’t make you feel better.
“But I have- I have claws” you muttered.
“But you also have heightened senses, much more than Logan and Laura” she said.
“I do yeah” you mumbled running a hand down your face. You twitched slightly hearing a car down the road, a familiar type of engine.
“They’re here” you said as her eyes went wide. She grabbed her phone typing away as she woke Laura also.
You went outside waited for the two cars to come. Two big black trucks armoured, with armed men in side.
“I’ll be damned” you heard someone muttered.
“You’re alive!” The same man said as he walked up front. You stared at him, you didn’t know who he was.
“Our little mistake” he said and you glared.
“Y/n? Isn’t it? Yeah I was there when they were making you” he chuckled as your heart pounded and rage boiled.
“The lioness they called you!” He chuckled and you frowned.
“Though I really-“ you stopped his talking quick as you sliced through most of his men. Till they injected you with something.
You heard commotion and your world blurred again.
You awoke groggily, you groaned and shifted expecting to be tied up.
“Logan” you heard someone say and you jolted.
“Easy” you flinched as you sat up. You were in a moving car on some highway by the looks. The Wolverine driving beside you and old man in the back and the young girl Laura.
“What?” You began to shake and cursed.
“Logan pull over” you heard commotion but you were gone. You shook and cried as you curled into the door. Your mind flashed through everything and you couldn’t focus. The car had stopped you felt it, you felt being pulled out the car and onto the ground.
“Hey!” You flinched at Logan’s voice and turned away from him. You could make out speech between him and the old man but couldn’t focus on the words. You were whimpering, tears rolling down your face. When they injected you with this mistake it enhanced everything, your anxiety attacks included.
You felt arms go around you and you were pulled to a warmish body. You stopped shaking so violently and gripped the persons arm. You felt your heart slow down eventually, your body trembling every couple of seconds. You were exhausted as you went like jelly.
“They enhanced everything in her human body, her need to eat so much, drink, her emotions, her mental state also” the old man said.
“Get out my head” you whispered feeling him in your head.
“I’m just trying to calm you down” he said weakly. You gripped the arm the was around you and leant against their chest.
“I’m sorry” you said quietly and heard a soft grunt in response.
“We need to keep moving” Logan said and you nodded. He helped you back in the car and you leant against the door with your full weight, not bothered by the rattling and bumpiness. You were in and out of sleep, to exhausted from the attack you just had.
“We need a place to rest, Logan” Charles spoke.
“Damn it Charles” Logan said and you looked to him. He was gripping the steering wheel tightly, his knuckles white.
“We need food and a good nights rest no matter how risky, we won’t get far like this” the old man fought. Logan smacked the wheel and gave in with a sigh.
You pulled into the closest motel, Logan went to grab takeaway and you went with him. You didn’t talk during your trip, you ordered a lot of food, gave Logan all your money, took your food and stumbled back to the car without a word. You began to eat stomach so empty.
“You gonna eat all that?” He raised an eyebrow at your three burgers, two chips, two hash browns and coke.
“Yes” you said with your mouth full. He sighed and rolled his eyes as he drove back to the motel.
You all ate in silence before Logan helped Charles into bed.
Laura came up to you, held your hand in inspected it. You were confused by the action and stared at her.
“She wants to see your claws” Charles said a small smile on his face.
“Oh- no you don’t see them” you faked a chuckled as she showed hers with a grunt.
“Oh” you said staring at the two knives coming out of her knuckles.
“Mine aren’t like that” you gulped.
“Also very painful-“ she gave you begging eyes and you sighed.
“Ok” you grumbled. You held your hand up and winced as your nails fell off and metal claws came through.
“That’s disgusting” Logan said looking to your nails on the ground.
“I know” you muttered as the girl looked at them in awe.
“I can do it with my toes too” you said and she perked up.
“Not today” you said chuckling softly and she huffed.
“Watch this” you said forcing your eyes to go into night mode. It made them dark and reflective before going back to normal.
“Cat senses” you shrugged putting your claws back. Your nails grew back, you didn’t watch trying to keep those three burgers, two cups of chips and two hash browns down.
“You’ve got three that come out?” You asked Logan and he grunted nodding. He was old looking, worn down, he sounded like a raspy wolf, grunting and growing all the time. Though probably a Wolverine seeing as his name is Wolverine also.
“Not as disgusting as my nails though” you tried to joke but sighed. Charles chuckled softly half asleep though.
“Get some rest we leave in the morning” Logan said sternly and you sighed.
You took Laura to the other double bed and tucked her in. You laid down, your back to them and stared at the wall. You had found others, but it wasn’t like you were expecting.

Yeehawgust 24: Distant Howls
During the events of Old World Blues, the Courier and Roxie go to Higgs Village and find… a tiny Deathclaw? 644 words.
Ashton had taken extra effort to go through every building in Big Mountain. It was unknown whether this was due to her disdain for the doctors of the Think Tank, who seemed to get worse with every new find, or simply because she had repeatedly lost all sense of direction and accidentally ended up in places that she hadn't meant to be.
Surprisingly, Higgs Village was not one of the worst places she had been to, despite being where all of them had lived.
"Oh dear," Ashton muttered, blinking. "Roxie, do you think this is what the world looked like before the bombs?"
Roxie barked, glancing up at her. Ashton frowned.
"I dunno. It seems nice-ish, though, doesn't it?" Roxie barked again. "Yeah, you're right. I can't imagine it at all."
In mostly silence, Ashton went through each building, Roxie trotting along behind her happily. It was odd to go through their houses, as it made it obvious that the doctors had been human at some point. It was odder still that despite having been human at some point, they still acted like monsters.
They encountered only minor (major, if she was being honest) inconvenience with a mini Deathclaw that had been waiting to strike the second she opened the back door to Dr. Borous' house. Roxie let out a confused, 'aroo?', beginning to approach it, as she had never seen a Deathclaw before- so Ashton picked her up and slammed the door shut. The Deathclaw clawed at the wooden door, and Ashton anxiously put Roxie down."Shh!" She whispered, and Roxie, curious, followed behind her as they went back to the front, slowly opening the door and being especially quiet as they began to approach the backyard.
The mini Deathclaw was still clawing at the door, growling. Ashton slowly raised her gun, shaky hands doing nothing good for her aim. Just as the shot would've been perfect, though, Roxie let out an excited ruff, apparently assuming that the Deathclaw was a friend. Ashton squealed, dropping her gun as the small Deathclaw lunged, small claws held high. Roxie barked again, tail wagging excitedly. The Deathclaw sniffed a bit in the air, claws still up, and Ashton reached out, grabbing Roxie again (stupidly, not her gun) to pull her to safety.
Instead, Roxie licked a big streak of a doggie-kiss on the mini Deathclaw's tiny face. The Deathclaw roared confusedly as Roxie did it again. It raised its claws higher, but Roxie playfully knocked it to the ground, nuzzling her snout against its belly. Confused, the Deathclaw lowered its claws again, simply accepting its role as Roxie's cuddle buddy.
Ashton, similarly bewildered by Roxie's behavior, released her hold on her, letting Roxie yip happily as she cuddled with the small Deathclaw.
"Um. Does this mean we're friends now?"
The Deathclaw roared, flashing its claws at her, but stopping between Roxie nuzzled against it again.
"Sorry, sorry. I get it. You and Roxie are friends. Not me and you. It's not like I wanted to be friends with you anyway." Ashton put her hands up defensively. "Well, that's not true. I did. But it's okay. Not everyone can get along, I guess."
A bit sadly, she left the duo alone, sulking off to where the Deathclaw had come from. It'd been hiding in a small house with the name 'GABE' written on top. Ashton frowned, reaching down to pick up the dog bowl just outside of it, similarly tagged with the same name.
The Deathclaw from before let out a growl, watching her intensely. "You're not Gabe, okay, so you can't get mad at me. I think I know someone who'd appreciate this more."
It growled again, but stopped abruptly when Ashton whistled, and Roxie sat up to follow. Quietly, it trotted behind Roxie
."So, we are friends?" Ashton asked, happy. It growled again. "Nevermind. Sorry."

~POV Mori~
I woke up when it was still dark out. Only the faintest light came in my windows.
I hadn't done anything yesterday. Just laid down and rested for the first time in a long time. The doctor's were convinced I needed one more day of rest, but I knew I was already better. When was the last time I had just let my body rest like that when I wasn't sick? I couldn't remember. This peace was nice.
The quiet of sunrise was only broken by the faint sound of bird calls in the distance. I sat up and closed my eyes. I focused everything on my other senses. I couldn't hear the ocean easily from here. I had wanted to use the sounds of the waves to meditate, but I would just have to do without.
It had been a few days since I last checked in with myself and really focused inward. I could still feel them, all of the Black Rukh that had merged with me back in Balbadd. They were much calmer than before. And they felt like a part of me now, like I might be incomplete if they were suddenly gone. I knew each one from the dreams too. Their lives were mine and each also now knew my life as their own.
Going through all of their lives on the ship would have been painful even without being sick. These were angry souls and they did not welcome the inner peace I was offering easily, but a person's Rukh doesn't lie. After reading this world's truth through my memories they all calmed.
All of us lived lives of loss and poverty and trauma. That must have been another part of why we were able to fully merge in such a short time.
As Black Rukh they couldn't return to the Great Flow where the rest of their loved ones were, but they at least had each other within me.
It was a very strange feeling.
And along with their lives and Rukh, their magoi was also now mine. What had felt like a small pool now felt like a large lake. I had a lot more magoi at my disposal now that they were fully integrated with me.
The Great Bell range and I grounded myself in the present.
Only then did it occur to me that I was probably sick, and suffering from the influx of Rukh separately at the same time. It had been both all along. Whatever illness I had was worsened by my situation with the Rukh. I hadn't lost my magoi manipulation during it, but it was probably learning it ahead of time that had saved me. There's no way such a large amount of Rukh entering me wouldn't have made my body unstable.
Would the doctors understand if I explained it to them? I should ask Sinbad before saying something unnecessary.
The dim light from my windows called to me. I got out of my bed, put on my glasses, and sat on the sill of one them at the encouragement of the waves.
Like this, I could look down and see the Palace court yard. On the other side of the court yard were the Silver Scorpio (martial arts training), and Black Libra (libraries & schools) Towers, behind them to the left was the Red Cancer Tower (military) and fully to the left was the Purple Leo Tower where Sinbad lived. Since I was on a high floor I could easily see all of the towers of the Palace from my windows -all except the White Capricorn Tower where Ja'far does most of his work since that building was on the other side of this one.
It was so strange. Looking at all this made it real that I was really here. How many times had I reread or rewatched scenes wondering what it would feel like to be here?
I rested my head on the window frame as I watched the growing light from the sunrise.
The guards changed.
The sun was fully risen. Ja'far would be waking up Sinbad soon if he hadn't already.
Two people walked out of the Purple Leo Tower -a guard and a woman. She wasn't wearing a uniform. In fact she was wearing less than the citizens I saw the other day.
"Oh, right."
Sinbad has a call girl see to him after Ja'far wakes him up.
I had the 3rd fan book for the anime which contains a day-in-the-life for a bunch of the main characters. It was only in Japanese, but I had learned enough (and could look up what I didn't know) to at least read his schedule.
The direct translation was for a "temporary woman" which from what I've found is the Japanese term for a fem sex worker. I've seen some translations for Magi's extra material refer to them as "call girls" so that was the term I chose to use.
The franchise used the word "harem" in a bunch of places, but purposely didn't use it here. That combined with an omake of Sinbad having a nightmare about being married and having a harem made it clear that Sinbad did not have a harem; he had the whole red-light district of his country to choose from.
Hold on... That book wasn't supposed to reach my house until after I had Isekaied so how did I know it's contents? There were barely any scans or photos of pages online-
*Knock knock*
My thoughts
were cut off when breakfast arrived -with more medicine of course.

~POV Sinbad~
Nearly a week had passed since King Sinbad had arrived home. There was a lot to catch up on. As much as he wanted to finally relax after everything that happened in Balbadd he didn't really have the time for it. Even after catching up he would still have to prepare for his trip to the Kou Empire. And Ja'far wasn't letting him forget either responsibility.
None of this stopped him from having his slow mornings. He at least gave himself that little slice of heaven.
This was business as usual -at least it was supposed to be- but Sinbad couldn't shake a growing feeling that he couldn't name. It was making him unsettled. The waves didn't give him any answers and drinking hadn't made it go away. It felt similar to missing important.
He wasn't missing any paperwork. There had been an issue with one of their supply ships going missing, and another being delayed, but he had already decided how to proceed. He was definitely interested in the progress the Black Libra Tower was making with testing Mori's theories, but the experiments would take time and they had already scheduled a meeting for an update. The new guests were still settling in. Alibaba was a mess and Aladdin was only marginally better the last time he had visited, but Morgiana was fine and already training with Masrur regularly. According to the doctors reports, Mori would be better in another day or so, and the reports he got from the maids said she was resting every day after giving that partial scroll.
Maybe this was impatience. Aside from his paperwork, everything interesting was either done or waiting for the next step.
Sinbad often walked his country in the evening, but there was no reason he couldn't check on things now. He didn't have time to go for a walk at that moment, but he could spare the magoi needed to use Zepar and fly around the country using the bird he had possessed with the Djinn's power. This wouldn't be the first time he'd done this while working on paperwork.
The bird was sitting on a railing in the city center when Sinbad took over. From this spot he could make some quick rounds in the city and then maybe make a stop in the Black Libra Tower to get a sneak peak at what they had found out so far.
The same old gossip filled most of the streets. Some price complaints, who just had a child, how work was going...
"You're serious? A prophet?”
"My husband saw the scrolls she made from her visions with his own two eyes."
Now that was new gossip.
Sinbad had the bird land near by the two women.
"Oh? What was in them?"
"He said it was like reading secrets of the world."
"Really???"
"Mhmm." She nodded. "Not everyone believes it though so they are all working to test her writing."
"Didn't you just say she was brought in by our King? Do they really think he'd be fooled by some false prophet?"
"I said the same thing! And you know what my husband said? He said that they need to find proof even if they believe the Prophet because otherwise we won't be able to prove it to our allied countries."
"I guess that makes sense..."
"Yeah, I guess so."
"Oh! I think I might know what she looks like!”
"What? How? You only learned about her just now."
"When King Sinbad came home, there was a girl on some magical flying cloth, remember? That has to have been the Prophet!"
"I think you're right!"
To two moved on to some other gossip and King had the bird fly towards the Palace. Listening to talk about his Beautiful Prophet reminded him of his mission to peek at what was happening in the Black Libra Tower. Being able to bypass the stairs and the gates made the journey much faster.
The Sun was already in the western side of the sky. Shadows were cast onto the court yard from the Black Libra Tower. The stone of the Green Sagittarius Tower was nearly blinding white from the direct light. Color flashed in the corner of his eye as the bird flew past the upper levels of the guest tower. Before his thoughts had fully registered the familiar shade of nearly black indigo, Sinbad was guiding the bird to investigate. He landed on the railing of one of the windows and looked at the young woman resting against that same window's frame.
Mori looked just as surprised to see a bird land right in front of her as he was to be there. Sinbad had purposely been avoiding using Zepar to spy on Mori since she somehow knew that he had eavesdropped on her before. It had been days since he last saw her, so when she was suddenly an option-
"Heh hehe"
Mori's chuckle and smile took his full attention. He didn't know what had made her laugh, but he hoped she'd do it again.
"Sir, are you aware you are a bird?” After the words passed her lips she was struck by a giggle fit.
Sinbad had no idea what she was thinking or why she had said that to a bird, but he was hearing her voice for the first time in nearly a week so he'd worry about figuring it out later.
When Mori finished laughing at her own joke she leaned her head to the side and watched him. Her hair shifted and another lock spilled over her shoulder. The sight brought attention to the low neckline of the dress she was wearing. If Sinbad was there in person he would have brushed her hair out of the way just to have an excuse to touch her.
"Did you miss me that much?" Her voice was soft and a bit playful. "You didn't have to use Zepar to visit me."
Mori knew it was him! Sinbad jolted and his head hit the back of his chair in his office. How could she tell? Only magicians could see magoi and Rukh to see the spell active on the bird.
"Sin, is something wrong?-” Ja'far had just entered the room to give his afternoon report.
King Sinbad raised a hand for him to be quiet and tapped Zepar's ring to explain the situation. He didn't want to talk and miss something Mori said or did.
The General's expression turned serious and nodded as he went quiet.
When Mori didn't get a response from the bird she added, "Are you surprised that I knew it was you?" Her smile was warm as the sun. "I have read your Fate many times, so I will always recognize you, my King."
Normally, the idea that someone could see through Zepar's magic would concern him, but this didn't. It strengthened his belief that Fate had guided Mori to him.
And the affectionate way she said "my King" at the end made him smile. The waves had moved like this a few times like the last time he had seen her in person, and when he learned she could also feel the waves. The Great Flow of the Rukh was guiding them to the Fate he could see, the one where she lived the rest of her life by his side.
Ja'far sighed. "Just let me know when I can give you my report."
Mori whipped her head towards the door to her room. "They're here early."
There were the sounds of people walking in the hallway, but no voices to denounce who, or their destination. All the same, Mori got up and walked to the door. She opened it before the doctors had a chance to knock.
"How did you...?" One of the doctors asked.
"I recognized the sound of your footsteps," was her answer.
"I see.... And how are you feeling today?"
Mori walked into her room, and spared a glance at the bird still watching her from the window. "I feel fine. Just like yesterday." She turned back towards the door and sat on the edge of her bed. "So can I finally leave this room?"
The doctors were understanding but they still were going to do a full check up first.
Even without the waves it was obvious that Mori was going to be marked as full health. Sinbad would prefer to go see her immediately and give her a tour of the Palace personally, but he was still a King with responsibilities. "Ja'far, Mori has just been declared healthy. What do you think of everyone having dinner together to get everyone better aquatinted?"
"I didn't hear anything about-” Ja'far started and then cut himself when he realized. "Were you just using Zepar to spy on her??"
"Of course not." Sinbad said with all of the confidence of the King he was. "I flew directly to her and she recognized me instantly. I wasn't spying at all."
"She recognized you??" Of course he'd be shocked.
King Sinbad laughed. "She did. Though she was surprised to see me."
"I bet she was surprised to suddenly see a bird in her room. What made you think to use Zepar instead of visiting her in person? You're already getting regular reports on her condition." Ja'far always acted as a buzz kill.
It didn't stop Sinbad from laughing at the situation before finally asking for that report he postponed earlier -conveniently avoiding answering Ja'far's question.
The magician in Mori's room was talking. "Would you be interested in visiting the Black Libra Tower with us? We can show you how the experiments are going. And if possible, would you be willing to answer some questions?"
That was an understandable request, but it could wear her out.
The Prophet was facing away from the windows so Sinbad couldn't see her expression. "I'd really like that actually." But he could hear the excitement growing in her voice.
"Let me get changed real quick." Mori disappeared behind her folding wall and emerged in the outfit he met her in.
Sinbad did not drop control of the bird, but he also didn't follow Mori out of her room. Instead he waited in the window sill until he saw her enter the courtyard and then had the bird fly to the Black Libra Tower.

As soon as he finished whatever last minute things Ja'far was about to add to his pile, Sinbad would go to the Black Libra Tower and surprise his Beautiful Prophet in person.
~POV Mori~
In the manga and in the anime the only areas shown of the Black Libra Tower were Yamuraiha's office/lab and one of the libraries. I was more than curious about the rest of the facilities.
The first room seemed to be a reception area and had a map of the tower. I only got to glance at the separations between the libraries, offices and class rooms before a tall and lanky magician walked up to us.
"Is this her??” Her short ponytail bounced as she looked between me and my guides.
Isa, the magician who had been taking care of me the past few days, introduced me. "This is Lady Mori, the Prophet!” He acted like he was showing off the coolest toy on the playground.
The tall woman got right up in my face. "I knew she had to be the Prophet! The Rukh don't normally move this way around people."
Before I got to respond she started rambling comments and questions that covered everything in maroon and peacock blue getting sponged across a cream canvas. I stepped back and Isa cut her off. "Lady Mori will be answering everyone's questions in time. We were just on our way to see Yamuraiha so I can show her how everything has been coming along. You are welcome to join us."
She definitely joined us. As did many others who spotted us or were called over by others in our procession.
We walked through a few library areas, and up a few flights of stairs. As we passed various rooms and areas I was told what or who would be inside, but I wouldn't remember any of the specifics until I had a chance to use the space and explore on my own. What did stick was that most of the classrooms were next to the libraries and the labs were near the offices.
Yamuraiha must have heard our group from down the hall because her head popped out from one of the rooms ahead of us. "What is going on out here??” Then she made eye contact with me. "It's you!!"
That made me smile. I fought back responding 'it's me!' like I would with my friends. "I'm Mori. I'm glad I'm finally getting the chance to meet you, Yamuraiha!” I stopped walking when I got 3 yards/meters away.
She immediately pulled her staff against her chest with both hands. Her shoulders tensed but she had an enthusiastic smile. "The pleasure is all mine!"
Yamuraiha was amazing, smart, and endearing. I really wanted to be friends with her.
I out stretched my hand to shake hers. "I'm really excited to work with you, and learn more about magic even though I'm not a magician."
"The feeling is mutual!” She took my hand more than matching my excitement. And when she released it said, "Since you're here, would you like to see what we've been working on from the scrolls you gave us?"
"Yes please!”

The lab she lead us to was a little down the hall. All of my scrolls were spread out on one table and a bunch of notes and different materials were on an other.
Yamuraiha pulled out parchment that had a complicated magic circle written on it. "We can't do much yet, and it still takes a catalyst and many magicians at once to control the amount of magoi safely but our alchemy magic has made a breakthrough from your writing."
She asked a few of the magicians that came with me to join her. They pointed their staffs and wands at the magic cycle. A large crystal in the room started glowing, and the Rukh lit up the space from within the circle. Specks were pulled out of the pile of ingredients nearby -dirt, scraps paper, a small potted plant- and gathered at the center of the circle. The light got too bright for me to look straight at it and when it faded there was a small dark grey cube in the middle of the circle. It looked like a die with no markings.
Yam explained. "After reading about 'atoms' and 'bonds' in your scrolls it was like finding the missing piece. It will still be a long time before we can perfect the process, and we still can't make anything bigger than this yet, but soon we will be able to make anything we want!"
((In the future I intend to: reference more old memes, describe more of my experience with synesthesia, and explain more basic history and science. SO you all have been warned lol))
I had to respond; I couldn't just continue staring in awe. When I tried to answer I ended up gasping since had forgotten to breathe. I chuckled at my own shock as well as the situation. I looked up at them. "You're all amazing to be able to develop this already from the little I wrote!" I looked back at the stone. "I knew I wrote the keys to Yunan's signature alchemy magic in those scrolls, but to think you've already gotten this far with it -its amazing."
With this -when developed farther- we could make certain materials without having to worry about the pollution, and break things down easily so we won't have to worry about garbage piling up everywhere.
"Did you say Yunan? The Magi, Yunan?" Yamuraiha looked at me with wide eyes.
"Yes." It was my turn to explain. "Yunan is able to use alchemy magic like this on a grand scale. In the Fates I read he will have reason to visit Sindria in about 2 years. He creates a cabin and food in the middle of the Palace court yard so he has somewhere comfortable to stay."
The bird in the window ruffled it's feathers.
"Yunan explains the basic concept of how that magic works when asked, and since I know the science of the physical world I know the details to what he was talking about." My smile widened. "I hope my notes were easy to understand. Please let me know if you have any questions."

I was sat in the medical unit of the DEO, reading through some medical reports from the past few months. I had just transferred from the DEO's desert facility, where I was one of the doctors there to help with any of the agents' injuries. After a long time there, I decided to transfer here when there was an opening for the lead doctor.
I thought it would be best to settle in by having a look at what severe cases had been dealt with recently. It was usually the same stuff – agents injured on field missions. Bullet wounds, broken bones, sprained muscles, thankfully nothing too severe. There hadn't been many major alien attacks which meant less risky field operations.
I was pulled from the reports when the red alarm light began to flash for a few seconds, accompanied by a siren, before turning off.
"Agent Y/L/N, Supergirl is incoming with J'onn," my radio went off – it was Director Danvers. "She's had a solar flare and got a gunshot wound."
I recalled what a solar flare was from research I'd done in Supergirl's medical records. That was something I prioritised when coming here, since we didn't have Supergirl at the other facility.
"I'm prepping a bed and equipment now," I replied through the radio, before hurrying to do that. J'onn could literally fly, he'd be here any minute.
With the help of some nurses who were around, I prepped a bed and had the solar energy panels on standby for when/if her powers came back sooner than we thought. I had the tools ready to bandage up her gunshot wound temporarily when both heroes appeared beside me.
J'onn was stood there, holding Supergirl bridal style and lowering her onto the bed.
"Still getting used to that," I mumbled, surprised at how he just sped in here.
"I said I'm– agh, I'm fine," Supergirl complained, clutching her bloody wound and trying to sit up. "My powers will come back."
I stepped by her bedside and pushed her back down gently, moving closer to inspect her wound. "Please stay still for a second."
"Listen to the doctor," J'onn teased to lighten the mood.
Supergirl rolled her eyes and stayed still. I removed her hand and noticed it was covered in blood.
"Can somebody come clean this up?" I called out to one of the nurses, motioning to her hand.
One of the nurses did as I asked as I took a look at her wound. The bullet was still in there by the looks of it.
"How many times do I have to tell you not to overwork yourself?!" Director Danvers' voice called out as she walked in.
She was glaring at Supergirl, though the worry in her eyes was evident as she took in the hero's appearance.
"It's barely a scratch, Alex, it'll heal," Supergirl said dismissively, but as I cleaned up the blood with a cloth, I saw her clench her jaw a little.
"You need to be careful, you're not indestructible," Alex reminded her, before looking to J'onn. "Can you believe her?"
J'onn chuckled. "I'll leave you both to it. I should get back." He glanced at me. "Good luck."
I nodded his way, offering a small smile as he walked away.
"As fun as it is watching you both glare at each other, I do need to remove the bullet," I spoke up, interrupting both girls' staring contest.
"Go for it," Supergirl said, her eyes meeting mine.
"With anaesthetic," Alex added, shooting another glare towards the blonde.
"I don't need anaesthetic," Supergirl countered with an eye-roll and scoff.
"You're human for the time being, remember?" Alex reminded her before looking to me. "Anaesthetic, please."
I bit my lower lip as they erupted into another argument about how I should proceed. I didn't know either of them well enough to cut in, so I stood there awkwardly, trying to stop the blood loss and planning out how I could temporarily bandage her up so it could heal itself when she gets her powers back.
"I have to go," Alex finally said, pulling me back into reality. "I have to check on the bank robbery." She didn't seem too happy leaving Supergirl here, but she gave her a knowing look before looking to me. "Please make sure she stays put?"
"You got it, Director," I said with a playful salute. How hard could it be to keep her here?
Alex gave Supergirl one last warning look before leaving us be. I looked to the blonde who was finally breathing out, letting her guard down a little now that it was just us.
"The anaesthetic will make it bearable, just so I can remove the bullet," I spoke, causing her to open her eyes and look at me. "I'm just gonna bandage you up temporarily and you'll heal yourself when you get your powers back. Shouldn't be more than a few days, according to your medical history."
She swallowed hard before shaking her head. "I've been through much worse. It's okay. Just remove it and bandage me up. The sooner I'm out of here, the better."
I was ready to argue, but she gave me a convincing look and I couldn't help but give in.
"Fine, but you stay here and rest," I reasoned, to which she gave me a small, cute smile.
I got to work and surprisingly, she managed. It went well and I managed to bandage her up quite quickly, though it did mean I had to cut into her suit a little. Better safe than sorry though.
"Okay, you're all done," I said, patting her arm supportively, before packing away the gauze. "I'm gonna go get you some water and then you should take it easy, stay here maybe until you get your powers back. That alright?"
She gave me a thumbs up and a promising smile. "You got it, doc."
I was fairly confident that she would listen to me, since she seemed polite and was a trooper throughout the whole thing. However, I soon realised how naive I had been when I returned and her bed was empty.
I facepalmed and shook my head, realising she'd definitely played along the whole time.
The first thing I did was look around the DEO, asking around if anyone had seen Supergirl. I eventually followed the commotion coming from the main hall and spotted both Supergirl and Director Danvers having an argument.
"...stay and rest! You can't keep ignoring simple instructions, Kara!" Alex shouted around her.
Supergirl rolled her eyes and continued to look at the tablet in her hand. I approached the two and cleared my throat loudly to get the blonde's attention.
When she noticed me, she gave me a sheepish smile. "Doctor Y/L/N. Heeeeeeey."
"One job, literally," Alex mumbled, giving me a knowing look, before storming off.
I breathed out and glared at Supergirl. "Are you serious? I asked you to stay put!"
She straightened up and spread her arms out for emphasis. "But I'm fine! See? Nothing hurts, I'm walking, it's all good! Job well done, I must say. You're new, right? Well, I know why you got the job!"
She avoided my glare as she walked around me to get to the other side of the desk.
"You've heard of the term 'first impressions count', haven't you?" I asked her, raising an eyebrow.
She gave me a knowing look. "C'mon. You can't hate me for this."
I sighed. "I've got work to do. Call me if you tear your stitches."
Resisting the urge to roll my eyes, I turned around and began to leave.
"I'm not gonna tear them!" I heard her call out from behind me, but I didn't care. I wasn't her parent, she could do what she wanted.
I wish I'd known I was dealing with a stubborn Super before accepting this job though.

"What a surprise," I said sarcastically.
A few hours later, I'd been called into one of the medical rooms because apparently, Supergirl had collapsed from blood loss and tore her stitches. Shocker.
"Is she going to be okay?" Alex asked as I got to work for the second time that day.
"Yeah, if she decides to listen to me this time," I said, sighing. "Is she always this stubborn?"
Alex clenched her jaw. "Unfortunately, yes... you think you can keep her here next time?"
"I'll give it my best shot," I promised her. "I'll call you when she's up?"
Alex nodded, patting me on the shoulder. "Thanks."
She left me to do my thing and this time I did things my way, the right way, with anaesthetic and IV fluid. I managed to sort out Supergirl's mess before going back to my office to fill out some more paperwork.
Some time passed when I found myself going back to check on Supergirl and see if she was awake. I was cleaning up a little around her side table when I heard her stir awake. She seemed confused at first, as she looked around and saw the tube coming from her arm. Eventually, realisation set in and she sank into her pillow.
I decided to stay quiet as I finished up, about to leave, but she stopped me.
"Wait," she called out. I paused as she continued, "I'm sorry."
I turned around and waited, watching as, unlike before, she wasn't joking or being unserious.
"I should have stayed put before. And listened to you. I didn't mean to offend you or come across as rude," she continued genuinely.
I crossed my arms and straightened up. "Well, Supergirl–"
"Kara," she interrupted. "It's Kara."
I nodded. "Okay, Kara. Yes, you probably should have listened. I redid your stitches and I'm asking you to stay put again. You're human for now and you need to act like one."
"You're right," she agreed, breathing out. "Sorry."
I realised that she seemed to mean it and at the end of the day, I was her doctor, so I couldn't hold a grudge. Instead, I went to her bedside and checked her monitors to see how she was doing.
"How are you feeling?" I asked, glancing at her.
"Tired. Achey. But better than before."
"That'll be the meds kicking in," I said, giving her a reassuring smile. "I did have to get in there twice."
Her cheeks went pink as she smiled with embarrassment. "I'm not used to being so..."
"Fragile?" I finished for her.
"Exactly," she said, nodding. "I'm not used to it and staying put isn't exactly my forte."
"I could tell," I joked, making her laugh a little. She had a nice laugh.
"About that first impressions thing..." she began, blue eyes holding mine nervously.
"It's nice to meet you for the first time, Kara," I said, holding out my hand. "I'm Y/N. Your doctor."
She cracked a smile, realising what I was doing. She shook my hand and said, "Nice to meet you, too, Y/N."
"Okay, I should go and get Alex," I said, backing up to leave. "Now please don't leave because Alex will kick my arse if you're not here when she comes back."
She laughed again. "I promise I'll be here when you return."
"Fingers crossed you're not playing me again," I mumbled loud enough for her to hear.
Her laughter seemed to follow me out the room, leaving me smiling to myself.

powerless to do, powerless to save
Well... it's here I guess? The first work in the someone to stay au! Umm... yeah. If you're wondering what the hell I'm on about, click here for the post giving a very brief explanation.
I'm writing it in a non-chronological order, so if there are any future works, and you see that it's in a completely different place in canon, that's why. And yes, we are starting with Nameless, Faceless. It's the only season 5 episode (aside from a half-formed plan for 100, that I actually had.) At the point in this fic, Ella has been with the BAU for roughly two years, and the team have known the truth about her and Hotch's previous dynamic for roughly one
I'm not fully happy with this, but we're going with it anyways because it was a lot of fun to write. I also didn't proofread it because... when do I ever proofread fics? She'd had a suspicion that something was wrong. They all had, from the moment Hotch was not the first person at the scene. JJ's suggestion had been pathetic, but they had to accept it. If Hotch had been there, he would've told them that their focus needed to be the case.
As she paces the hallway in a hospital nowhere near him, it occurs to her that maybe the whole point was that Hotch hadn't been there to tell them that. That they were meant to find him. Before... She can't even think about it. Her priority has to be Spencer. She'll go, once he's out of surgery, but he'll need his blanket and crackers when he comes out.
Ella isn't sure when she started to think of herself as Reid's older sister, but it's not scary like it used to be. Maybe because everything is finally out in the open and he still loves her.
"Agent Birch? The anesthesia will be wearing off soon, you can come through," the doctor tells her.
She smiles slightly, before gathering her things and walking into his room. His eyes flutter open a few minutes later, and he winces against the light.
"How do you feel?" She asks.
"Like I got shot in the leg," he quips, but she can only manage a small smile.
"I brought your blanket and crackers. I didn't bring any books, because I thought I would come back later, so you can send me with a list-"
"What happened to Hotch?" Reid asks.
Ella swallows, then puts the blanket over him. He relaxes slightly, but continues to watch her stall. She's always liked that about him. He doesn't push her.
"Foyet broke into his apartment and stabbed him nine times before driving him to a hospital. He left a photo of Haley and Jack but took a page from his address book. From the Bs." She speaks as though Hotch is just another victim who she has to get justice for (in some ways, he is.)
Reid looks confused. Ella's throat starts to close. She's not sure she can say it. Not after everything that woman has done for her.
"Haley's maiden name is Brooks. It's how Aaron saves her information." She'd known that, even before Morgan had called with the update.
"You need to go to him," Spencer says.
"The rest of the team is there. I'm needed here-"
"You're needed there. I'll be okay. I'm not exactly going anywhere."
"Are you sure?" If she's being honest, she's just been waiting for Spencer's permission to leave.
Spencer nods and she kisses his forehead, careful to make sure she doesn't touch his elbow as she leans over. It's the little things.
The cab gets her there faster than she expected. She won't complain though. After flashing her credentials, the receptionist lets her through and before she knows what she's done, she's in his room.
She never was good at controlling her impulses.
Ella has seen many terrible things in her life. But nothing breaks her quite like seeing Aaron defeated. She's seen him numb, and sad and empty but never defeated. It feels like realising that your parents were not infallible. Bile rises in the back of her throat, and a sound escapes her mouth. It is enough to alert Haley and Aaron- the only people in the room- to her presence.
"Oh hello darling. Come on in, it's two visitors at once," Haley says. She wipes away her tears, and the gap between their birthdays feels like an abyss.
"Are you sure?" Always hesitating too late.
Haley nods, so she walks over. Aaron turns away. She tries to not let it sting.
"Hi Aaron," she whispers.
She sees him close his eyes, willing away tears, and that's enough for her. She turns away too, not wanting to let Haley see how it's affecting her.
A man appears in the doorway. Of course. Haley and Jack are going into WitSec. She doesn't want to say goodbye to Jack, but she also doesn't want him to think she doesn't care. Just as she tries to work out a way to tell Haley this, she feels someone touch her arm.
Haley. When Ella opens her mouth in confusion, Haley shushes her gently and drags her from the room. The man lets them go and she wonders how Haley explained their relationship to him.
"Hay, I am sorry. I am so, so sorry and I will spend the rest of my life making this up to you and to Jack. I swear on my life." Now that their time feels limited, hiding the tears feels pointless.
"You and Aaron are so different. And yet somehow you're exactly the same. I don't need you to tell me that, because I know. But I do need you to promise me something."
"Anything."
"Keep him safe for me?"
Because Haley can't know for certain that Ella will. Not after today. Not after she's failed like she has today.
"I can't. I don't know how," she says, not meeting her eyes.
"You can. You do. Eleanor, promise me."
She's powerless to deny her this. "I promise."
Something like relief passes across her face and Ella manages a real smile. Then Haley suddenly looks too happy, and she knows Jack has found them.
"Miss Ella, Daddy said we have to go away so I wanted to say goodbye," he says.
Ella crouches down like Aaron always does and Jack runs into her arms. He's just a baby, trusting everyone to catch him without a single ounce of hesitation.
"I'm going to miss you a lot. But I'll still love you, even if I can't see you," she tells him.
Haley knew the words are meant for her too, so she smiles.
"Will anyone there have the funny voice you do?" He asks. The joys of childhood.
"Jack! Miss Ella has an English accent, not a funny voice," Haley chastises.
"They might. You'll have to tell me if they do- when you come back of course." If you come back.
Jack nods solemnly. "It will be my other mission."
She smiles, and his mind moves onto the next thing, which is taking his mother back to the marshal. Ella watches them go from their hiding spot, and she feels a strange sense of pride when Haley didn't turn around.
It doesn't last long. She sits on the ground, wondering why she can't cry. The tears that had come so easily when Haley was there have dried up, and she forces herself off the floor once her foot starts to tingle.
Dave is leaving as she re-enters Aaron's room.
"I don't blame you," he says.
"I would," she replies.
He closes his eyes. "Ella, I can't. Not right now. So please don't make me." It's scary sometimes, how well he can read her.
"Okay. I have to go and see Reid. I'll be back tomorrow."
Hotch just nods in acknowledgement.
"I'm sorry," she says from the foot of his bed, her back to him.
"So am I."
She doesn't get the chance to go back the next day. Reids injuries were more complicated than first assumed so there were additional things going on. She didn't understand a word. Spencer loved explaining it though, so it wasn't the worst thing in the world.
In fact, Ella doesn't go back till Aaron is discharged. She meant to. She really did. But in between Spencer- who wasn't to be blamed- working longer days because they were two people down, and everything else, visiting hours never seemed to work. She wasn't sure how often the rest of the team had managed to go. She's too much of a coward to ask.
"What are you doing here?" Aaron asks. He doesn't sound snarky, but she still winces.
"I'm staying with you," she says.
Really, she's the only one who can. Reid is out of the question, because until he can go to the bathroom himself- even if it is whilst using crutches- he's been told to stay with JJ and Will. Derek is overworked, leading the team and checking in with both of them everyday. Everyone else is needed to do their jobs. Ella is the only one junior enough to get away with not being there.
"It's not a problem is it?" Derek asks. He looks exhausted.
Aaron swallows, then shakes his head. "Of course not. I was just surprised."
Ella looks down, feeling her cheeks burn. He's not doing it deliberately, but every word feels like a dagger. Because she loves him. Not the way she did all those years ago, when she felt everything too much, but in a peaceful way. In the way of friendship.
At least, that's what she tells herself.
"Can you walk down to the car?" She asks.
He nods, but Derek brings the wheelchair just in case. It is the right decision, because they've only gone a few steps when the pain in his legs from being thrown on hard flooring becomes too much and he almost falls. Ella doesn't have the strength to carry him, and she feels the hot sting of tears prick her eyes.
What is she thinking? How is she supposed to spend two months caring for him when she can't even do this?
"Are you coming?" Derek asks. She sees that him and Aaron, who looks like he wants the ground to swallow him up, are already in the doorway. She nods, then follows them in silence, grateful that they let her carry the bags, even though they are fully capable of doing it themselves.
They drive back to the apartment in silence, not even the radio giving them background noise. The last time that had happened, Ella had come back from Kate's funeral after her and Aaron's prior knowledge of each other had been revealed in the ugliest way possible. In some ways, she feels like she's coming back from another funeral. Only this time, it's Aaron who has died. Because he will never be the same. None of them will.
"I would stay and help you get settled, but I've already been gone long enough, and there's a very important meeting happening, and the paperwork is building up-"
"Derek. Go. We'll be fine," Ella says.
Derek exhales, and ruffles Hotch's hair, the same way he does to Reid. It reveals a lot about how their dynamic has changed, however unintentionally. He hugs Ella, who goes limp in his arms, taking the moment to be human. It's over too soon, and then she's putting the brake on the wheelchair whilst she unlocks the door.
Aaron's hands are shaking too much.
"Are you hungry?" She asks, as he moves to the sofa, using the arm rest as something to hold onto.
"Not really. I also don't know what I can eat without feeling sick," he says.
She can't resist it. "But you're white, everything is bland anyways."
He doesn't laugh, but he does smile, and after everything, it's more than enough.
She goes over to the cereal cupboard and pours them both a bowl of Jack's sugary one. She adds milk to his, then grabs two spoons and brings them over. Normally, she would sit on the floor. Today, she sits on the couch next to him, crossing her legs to change her positioning.
"Go on. It'll be good for you," she tells him, through a mouthful.
He stares at her, then obeys. They don't speak whilst they eat, but it feels like the comfortable silence they enjoy when everyone else has gone out for lunch and she wants to make sure he actually does eat something.
When his gaze eventually settles on the replaced carpet and covered bullet hole, she swallows. She saw it when she came with Derek to pick some things up for him, but not since then. In fact, she's been making a conscious effort to not look at it since then. She needs time to work out what to say to Aaron.
He doesn't comment, and she doesn't either. Maybe it's selfish of her, but it's nice to pretend things are normal, even if it's only for one night.
"Do you need any help changing?" She asks, as the hands on his clock get closer and closer to midnight.
Aaron starts to shake his head, then slowly nods. She just stands, holding out her arm for him, and together they manage to get him into the bed. She takes the floor, just in case something happens. When Aaron protests, she tells him it'll be good for her back. At least, that's what her mother always said, when her bed went to visiting grandparents.
Aaron doesn't wake up that night. He cooperates with her the next morning, not even questioning how she's been cleared to take that much time off. He doesn't talk about anything, but she also doesn't push him. She doesn't know where they stand after the events of the previous night, so she won't rock the boat.
Spencer is also in high spirits. Will and JJ were both at work- he was staying with them because they had the most accessible house, as everyone else's apartments were smaller and required going either up stairs or in a life, but at their house, he could just take the spare bedroom, something Henry loved- so Ella took it upon herself to go and check up on him too.
After all, she wasn't going to let Dave near him, and Derek had far too much on his plate as it was. She sent him a quick picture of Spencer holding up his latest book, to which he just responded to with a smiley face. It made them both smile.
She only leaves when Will comes home with Henry. There's a bond that exists between the three of them that she'll never truly be involved in, and that's okay. But she didn't want to leave Aaron for any longer than she already had, so after promising Will that everything was okay, she headed back home.
No, not home. Aaron's apartment. She has a home. It's not his.
"I brought dinner by the way," she says, as a way of announcing her presence.
"You didn't need to do that," Aaron says reflexively.
"I wanted to. And look, it's your favourite!"
His eyes light up at the mention of pasta, and because Ella is the one that made it, he's even more excited to try and guess what different spices she threw in this time. He's yet to be correct. This time was no different.
Ella changes his bandages and manages to give him a shower. He doesn't complain, and she's starting to feel nervous. He's up to something. She can tell that much, but she can't tell what. But he's being too good. Too easy. Normally he would downright refuse to let anyone help him until he was seconds away from breaking, and even then.
Aaron doesn't sleep that night. He's too busy thinking about what he found whilst Ella was out. She's none the wiser, convinced he's going to start opening up just as soon as he realises that all she wants to do is help. Rationally, he does know that. But there's a part of his brain that also knows there is every chance Foyet could come back to finish what he started. And if she's there when it happens- if she dies because he was too scared to be alone- then he would have failed everyone who ever dared to have faith in him.
Something feels different the next day. The events are mostly the same, but the atmosphere has changed. It prickles with tension, and Ella has a funny feeling that something is going to be horribly wrong. But then Spencer's appointment goes well, and Aaron eats his dinner, and she allows herself to think that maybe this time, she really is just being paranoid.
Perhaps that was the moment the universe aligned to destroy everything.
Ella gets called into work to assist Anderson the next morning. As she answers her work phone, Aaron's jaw clenches. She doesn't want to go. But when he looks at her, she knows she has to.
"I'm sorry," she tells him again. This time, he doesn't reply. He just hands her a mug of coffee as she heads out the door, not even trying to return her smile.
The photographs they're looking at remind her too much of Aaron's scars. Of the pool of blood in his living room. Of the taunts that were painted across Boston all those months again. When she drops her mug, Anderson sends her home. He doesn't really have the authority to do that, but she obeys. She's no use to anyone when all she can think about is her boss.
Spencer slips, not realising there was a spillage. He's in tears by the time Will gets home and is able to lift him. They both decide to not tell Derek. They do tell Ella, who immediately changes trains to get to them. After following the instructions given to them by the hospital, Spencer decides he's okay. Ella can't help but blame herself. If she'd left the moment it became clear she couldn't do anything useful, instead of waiting for Anderson to decide, she would've been there. She could've helped.
As Spencer falls asleep, drained by the physiotherapy he had done before his fall, Will tells her she wouldn't have been able to do anything more than keep him company. It does nothing to alleviate her guilt, but the thought is appreciated. When he then says he's taken the rest of the afternoon off, just in case, she leaves. Being in their home felt like suffocating.
Ella assumes Aaron is sleeping, so she doesn't bother texting him to say she's coming back because it will just disrupt him. Derek had the locks changed- she's got one of the two spare keys, so she lets herself in, intending to either shower or make a snack.
Neither of those things happen.
Because Aaron isn't sleeping.
He's sitting on the couch, pouring over a file. She doesn't need to go any closer to work out what one it is.
"You're not meant to be looking at that," she says.
He doesn't respond. The file gets put on the coffee table, and she kicks her shoes off before walking over. It's worse than she imagines. Because it's not the original Foyet file. It's the new one. Photos from his apartment, the ones that nobody wanted to take because it felt like a gross invasion of his privacy, are spread across the whole space.
She almost vomits when she realises she couldn't tell which photo was of his scars.
"I have to," he whispers.
"No. You don't."
"I made a promise to Haley. I would catch him, and make it up to her. I have to."
"Well Haley made me promise that I would keep you safe, and this is the exact opposite of that!" She snaps. The weight of her confession only hits her when he turns, eyes wide and mouth parted in shock.
"Why would she ask you to do that?"
"Because she knows how much I love you." There's no point in lying. Not about this. Not now.
Aaron starts to laugh. And suddenly, the events of the previous night make sense. He was acting perfectly because when her back was turned, he was doing the one thing he had been forbidden from doing.
"No you don't. You can't. Not after what I put you through. All those months of hiding. All that time you had to spend fixing something that I broke. You can't love me."
He's scared. He's trying to push her away, but in a way that means she won't look back one last time to make sure it's what he wants. She fell for that once before, and she promised herself she would never do it again.
"I know what you're doing. It's not going to work."
His face falls as he realises she's right.
"You once said to me that I trusted Agent Birch to do what she was told, but I didn't trust Ella to do what was right. Well, now I do. Ella. I am asking you as Aaron. Leave. And don't come back until Foyet is dead."
"I'm staying here."
"No. You're not."
"I am! Why is it so hard for you to understand that I care about you? That I want to keep my promise to Haley just as badly as you do?"
"Don't bring her into this."
"You already did when you insulted the promise you made to her by using it to justify looking at that. I'm not leaving, because you need someone here. And because staying is the right thing to do. Not leaving. Foyet won't come after me because I signed up for this life. Haley didn't."
"Exactly."
"What on earth is that supposed to mean?"
"You're not Haley and you never will be, so stop fucking trying," he shouts.
Ella steps back. Hotch's face immediately softens, and he looks away, hands fisted in the material of his sweatpants.
"Eleanor-"
"I'm leaving," she says.
For better or for worse, he doesn't stop her.
She slips her shoes on in the elevator, not wanting to risk falling down the stairs when the tears she's been trying to find since Haley left are blurring her vision. It's only when she exits the apartment building that she realises just how alone she is. Who is she meant to tell? Where is she meant to go? She can't go to her own apartment, not alone, but there's nobody else she wants to tell. If it was any other time, she would tell Derek, but she can't.
With a deep sigh, she dials a different number.
"Honey! I was wondering when I was going to hear from you! Did you burn Hotch's mouth? Can I bring over the new dish I tried to make. Your mother would kill me if she saw how it came out, but it's edible," Penelope greets.
Ella can't find the words.
"Sweetie?"
"Can you- can you pick me up please? If you're free? I just- I'm outside Hotch's apartment building but I can't go home right now because-" she can't finish.
"I'll be there in ten," Penelope says.
She is, and Ella doesn't want to think about the speeding limits she must have broken to do that. She just gets in, letting Penelope hug her. But she doesn't speak, and Penelope drives to her apartment without asking any questions.
"What happened?" Penelope asks, once they're sitting down.
"It's stupid. He's hurting and he's scared, and he said something he didn't mean to try and protect me, and I hated him for it because he's right. He didn't mean it in a bad way, but he's right."
"Wait, what did he say?"
"That I'm not Haley, and I should stop trying to be."
"Were you?"
Ella looks up in surprise. But there's no judgment in her friend's face. Just a look of encouragement, and a feeling of safety that won't vanish once she gives her answer. It's enough to make her confess.
"I think so. I just wanted him to be okay so badly, that I thought if I reminded him of his reason to fight-"
"You already are. That's why he said it. Because he wants to keep you safe. He wants to keep us all safe."
"I know that."
"You just wish he would do it without destroying himself?"
Ella nods. Penelope pats her knee. "He won't. Destroy himself that is."
"How can you be so sure?"
“Because we’ll be there to stop him.”
And then the phone starts ringing. Penelope frowns, then answers it.
"Derek? Why aren't you calling from your- wait why are you, oh she's here. I'll give it to her."
Ella takes the phone. "What is it?"
"You need to get to the hospital. Hotch opened his stitches and he's going to be fine, but he's being kept in for observation and you're his second medical proxy, so if anything happens tomorrow, they'll defer to you and not me," Derek says.
She almost drops the phone. She remembers Hotch asking her to be his second, a few months after New York, but she had always assumed he changed his mind and made it Dave, like she had told him even though she'd said yes. And then she curses herself for thinking about that instead of the actual incident.
Which she caused.
"I'll be there as soon as I can."
Derek hangs up without another word.
"We need to get to the hospital," she tells Penelope. She just nods, before vanishing into her bedroom. Ella puts her shoes on, and makes sure she's got all her stuff. When Penny comes back, she's holding a bag.
"I have one for each of you. It's got his hospital essentials," she explains.
Ella nods. They need to leave. She explains what happened in the car.
"Hi, we're here for Aaron Hotchner? I'm his second medical proxy, Eleanor Birch? This is technical analyst Penelope Garcia. We work with him at the BAU," she tells the receptionist, because it's a different person this time. They both hold up their I.D. and she wonders when she got so used to hospital procedure.
"Sure, Mr Hotchner is conscious now, so you're free to go through. The rest of his team are already here."
They both nod.
Everyone, with the exception of Derek, is standing in the hallway. Ella doesn't want to look at them, scared they're going to be disgusted with her for leaving. For being too emotional and too distracted to see through his act and for being responsible for everything that's happened and disrupted their lives even more.
"What happened?" She asks, needing to know, even if she doesn't want to.
JJ shrugs. "He wouldn't see any of us. Only Derek."
She doesn't say anything. Nobody asks her why she wasn't there, and she's not sure whether she hates them or loves them for it.
"Ella, come in, we've been waiting for you," Derek says, poking his head round the door.
Everyone else turns in his direction. He gives them the bravest smile he can manage and nods, as though confirming that he's going to make it through the night. Ella takes a deep breath to calm herself, and walks in.
Before she can stop herself, she's throwing her arms around Aaron. He doesn't smell like he should, and that's more upsetting than the bandages that cover his chest. He lets out a slight sound of surprise, but she doesn't pull away till he starts to shift in his bed. Only then does she properly take in his appearance. He's too pale.
"I'm so sorry. I should never have left," she says.
"I shouldn't have said what I said. I just- I was looking at the file, and I panicked, because that man knows about everything and everyone that matters to me, and I couldn't have him taking you away because-"
"Shh, it's okay. You're already forgiven. I know you were just trying to help. But most importantly, what were you trying to do?"
"Change the dressing and bandages. I know it was irresponsible and stupid, but I just didn't want to get you involved."
Pride will always be his downfall. Not because he has too much of it, but because he never allows himself a moment to think that he can be both. Vulnerable and proud. He doesn't need to choose.
"I'm sorry," she says. She feels like she's said it more in the past week than in an entire lifetime. But she is. If she had been there for him, if she had just stayed, if she hadn't let her emotions get the better of her, just like she always did, he would be safe. Maybe even sleeping.
They need to talk about it. Properly. But not tonight. Tonight, she needs to think about why she was trying so hard to be just like Haley. He needs to process that if she hadn't stopped him, he would've said he loved her. Tonight, they need to let themselves be unburdened, even if it's only for a few minutes whilst they eat.
Derek is watching from a distance. He knows what the look on Ella's face means. She's holding herself together through sheer determination to appear worthy of her position, but the threads are fraying with every word that leaves Aaron's mouth.
And Aaron doesn't regret what he said. Not truly. Because he loves Ella. In one way or another, he loves her enough to die for her, and he knows she loves him enough to do the same. But it terrifies him, so he is going to push, and push, and test her boundaries until she snaps and leaves him, because he doesn't understand that people can stay.
But he's exhausted. It is selfish to want Aaron to come back, especially now, but that's what he wants. He never wanted the role of Unit Chief to come to him like this. So instead of forcing them to have the discussion, he just takes the chair next to the bed. Ella immediately shifts so he can sit on the bed with her, which the nurse who comes in finds hilarious.
Hotch doesn't let the rest of the BAU see him. They get it. Derek is his second. Ella has been staying with him, and even if she hadn't, she brings out the side of Aaron they only ever saw around Haley.
They still stay. They watch from outside his room.
"Do you think they'll be okay?" Penelope asks. She told everyone what had happened, because they needed to understand.
Nobody knows how to answer. Because the question has come from the one woman that was supposed to always believe, and always see the bright side.
"They have to be. There's no other way this can end," Spencer says, because it is not a lie.
They're okay for that night.
But then Aaron changes the locks again. And Eleanor does not get the spare key. So then she does not see him again until he returns from his leave. Eleven days too early.
And then they're not okay. They're about as far from it as they can get.

Off The Deep End

Derek Morgan, if you go over to those curtains one more time, I swear on all my plushies back at Quantico, I will beat your ass myself.” Penelope threatens for the fourth time in the past few hours. She receives a smile from Emily who’s seated beside a napping JJ.
“Babygirl. I’m just trying to open a window, it’s too hot here.” He squints at her, with sweat beads on his forehead.
“I don’t care!” She snaps, placing her laptop aside a little rougher than she'd like. She gets up from her spot on the couch, and shoves Derek aside from the open window, “You’re going to sweat through your clothes, you are going to make a puddle on this floor. I don’t care! But, we are not opening these, because if these open, then my internet fades away, and if my internet goes away, then I can't do any digging to find Spencer. So, no, Derek, you may not open the window!” She snaps.
He stares at her for a moment with wide eyes silently. As she returns back to her spot he follows her and sits at her feet.
“What?” She growls frustratedly. He softly takes her glasses off her face and folds them, putting them aside. “I can't see without those, Derek.” She huffs, going to take them back. He stops her hands, and brings them to his mouth and gives her knuckles soft kisses.
“Sweetie, I know this is stressful. It’s hard on all of us,” He speaks to her with love, “but, it's important we don't lose our temper with each other.” She looks at him dearly with teary eyes.
“I just wish I could do more.” She sniffles quite like a mouse, tears dripping from her eyes, “I feel like we’re not doing enough to help him.”
The team is all at wits end. It’s very clear. Earlier, Hotch had lost his temper with JJ because she hadn’t ‘talked to the local police about the case yet’. Even he knew that was a ridiculous thing to argue over, because, the local PD had nothing to do with this case. But, nonetheless, he had yelled at her, and she had argued back, causing the both to walk away from each other heated.
“Well, then talk to me. Tell me, what is it that can help you work better.” Derek wipes his dear friends cheeks, “Want me to help set the internet a little better?” He asks, stroking her cheeks with his large hands.
Her lips perk up at the corners, “Now you're talking my language, Baby.” She nods like a little child. The two continue back and forth for a bit. They don't realize they have a watcher from afar.
From the dining table in the kitchen, Amelia sat watching the two agents longingly. She knew they didn't have a romantic relationship, but she envied the way they were touching each other and smiling and loving. She envied them and she hated herself for it. Because, with every hour that passed without Spencers being found, was another hour that she was growing angrier.
Not at the team, she knew they were trying their best. But, at herself? She didn't really know; she just needed to be angry at something, or someone.
“How are you feeling?” A hand on Amelia's back startles her. She looks up to see Aaron.
He was older than her by a good decade or so, but Spencer always spoke with such respect to his name. Not so much as a father figure, but more so an older brother. So, eventually that's the role Amelia gave him in her life also.
“Alright,” She lied, taking a sip of her unintended cold coffee.
He takes a seat beside her. He’s about to say something when Derek and Penelope both call for Amelia.
Both of the two seated in the kitchen come into the living room. Hearing their call startles JJ awake, as she was napping on the love seat opposite to them. Emily places a hand on her thigh to reassure her nothing has happened.
“Ameilia,” Garcia starts off just above a whisper, “did you ever have anyone come and check your internet?”
All eyes are on her, “Yeah,” she's confused. She already said the internet was slow. Why does it matter? “I called someone a couple months back, but he didn't really help. In fact, I think it just got worse after he checked it.” She half shrugs. “Spencer thought I was crazy when I told him that.” She gives a ghost of a smile.
“What exactly did he do? The man you called for the wi-fi?” Penelope pries.
“Why does it matter?” Hotch asks.
“Just give me a second to figure this out,” Penelope stalls, looking back to Amelia, “What did he do when he came?”
Amelia licks her dry lips, starting to get anxious, “Um- he checked our router and our modem. Said it was old school, and he would give us a new one free of cost.” She takes a shaky breath in, “Why?”
“Where’s the new system he set up?” Derek asks, standing up from the couch he was seated on.
After Amelia points to the closet in her room, she comes back to Penelope. “Pen, what is it?”
“I have a hunch,” Garcia says, typing on her laptop, “I don't want to be right about it.” Derek comes out of the room with a tiny black box with flashing red lights. He hands it to Garcia, who without a beat says, “But, I'm afraid I am.”
“Sweatpea, this isn’t a new modem. This is a blocker.” Penelope says, turning it around and switching off numerous buttons on it. “The guy, whoever he was, came in here, and planted this on purpose.” She speaks directly to Ameila, though the whole team is watching her with wide eyes.
“Why would - why would someone do that?” Amelia stutters.
“It all makes so much more sense now!” Penelope's brain switches a flip and she tosses the blocker onto the floor, and starts typing hard on her computer. She laughs, “My internet is back! And I got something else too!” JJ gets up to stretch her legs and is instructed by Pen to go and open the curtains.
She's confused, but follows orders as told.
“Derek Morgan, I could kiss you.” Peneople is in her own world.
“I would love that, I really would. But, if we could know why…?” He snaps in front of her screen but she shoos his fingers away. She's in a trance. Maybe it's just because her internet is back up and running, but Amelia begins to get impatient.
She finally turns the screen around to show the team what she's looking at. She's panting as though she ran a mile in under a minute.
The whole team looks at her screen in confusion. “Is that-?” Emily starts.
“Is that us?” Amelia finishes.
“That's us.” Morgan confirms as he raises his arm just to watch his arm raise on the screen.
“What is going on?” Aaron looks at Penelope.
Penelope waits for a dramatic pause, and then she says with complete confidence, “Amelia, someone has been watching you and Spencer for a while now. That same someone was the one who had that blocker planted in your apartment, so they could block any interruptions in and out of here. My bet is,” She turns her laptop back around, “they’re the ones in charge of Spencer's kidnapping.”
Amelia takes in all the information one by one. “But, I called the internet guy just out of chance.” She recalls her memory.
“Where did you find his number?” Emily asks.
“Spencer gave it to me. Actually, he’s the one who called him.” She remembers, “I had complained to him that I was having trouble working on my kindergarteners report cards, so he said he had found someones number on a bulletin board. He’d spoken to him himself, and said the guy would come over the weekend.”
“This is good,” Hotch says, “this is the closest thing to a lead we’ve had since Spencer has gone missing. Emily and Derek, you two go and check out the bulletin boards back at the office, and check if you can see what number Spencer had gotten in contact with.”
The two agents nod, and head out of the apartment, “Penelope,” Hotch says. As she looks up, he replies, “great work.” She beams a smile.
Amelia feels something deep in her stomach. Maybe it's the baby she never forgets about. Or, maybe it's the sense of guilt taking over her. Because, if she hadn't complained to Spencer about the crappy wi-fi, then the man wouldn't have come over. If he didnt come over, he wouldn't have planted the blocker which would mean they wouldn't have surveillance on them. Which would mean Spencer wouldn't have gotten kidnapped, and then he’d still be here today holding her close and-
She begins to feel lightheaded and loses her footing slightly staggering in place. Aaron quickly catches eye of her losing balance and runs up to her. He quickly places a hand on her back and seats on the nearest couch.
“Amelia, we will find him, you have to take it easy..” He reassures her. Most, if not all, of the team knew about her pregnancy. Only the females had made it verbal, but the males also showed just a little extra care towards her in the past 24 hours

Emily and Derek roll up to their Quanatico office half an hour after the conversation back at the Doctors apartment. They both step out of the car. “So, what are we looking for?” Derek asks, taking off his sunglasses, tucking them into his back pocket.
“Well, Amelia said Spencer had found the electricians number on the bulletin board. Our first best bet is probably the one in the kitchen.”
“But,” Derek opens the door for Emily, “is it really like him to just call a random stranger over to his apartment? I mean, the guy doesn't sound like he worked for a big company.”
The two file into the elevator and start heading up, “Well, he's not really one for technology, is he? He wouldn't really care as long as the problem got solved. Amelia said herself, the problem wasn't bothering him, it was bothering her.” Emily walks out of the elevator first after it stops.
“And, he would do anything in his power to help her be happy.” Derek says as they walk into the bullpen and head for the kitchen. “Even if that meant calling up a stranger and asking for help.”
When they walk into the kitchen nothing stands out to them. Coffee is brewing for other agents, sing has a few dirty mugs, and the bulletin board is just filled with papers they'd seen before.
Derek skims the pages and doesn't seem satisfied, “This is all the regular stuff. Flyers for newbies, orientation timings, and lectures by older agents. Nothing about electricians.”
“Well, there has to be something somewhere.” Emily grunts as she goes to fill herself a mug of hot caffeine. She offers to make Derek a cup, but he declines politely.
“Okay, so I’m Pretty Boy, okay?” He looks at Prentiss, “My wife needs help with the internet at home. I don't know jack squat about that stuff, so what do I do?”
“Ask someone else for help?”
“But, I'm also too shy to ask someone myself. I don't see any flyers here at work, so…” he trails for a second before continuing, “maybe, i see a flyer at my regular cafe.” He lifts an eyebrow suggestively.
Emliy hums in agreement, “Could be.” She nods, “He does get to work with coffee in hand, so he has a regular spot. Someone was already watching him, so they probably knew that. Could’ve planted a trap for him there.”
Derek takes out his phone and dials a memorized number on speaker, “Speak to me, Chocolate Thunder.” Penelope answers.
“Hey, Mama. I need you to look up the route from Spencer's apartment to work. Tell me what coffee shops you see between us.”
Typing begins on the other side before the hear Amelia's shy voice.
“Is this regarding Spencer?”
“Yeah,” Emily answers, “would you happen to know where he got his morning coffee from, Amelia?”
“Uh, yes,,” she replies, “it’s this small cafe like ten minutes from here.” She pauses, “I think it's called The Corner Brewery.”
“Already sent you the address to your cells.” Garcia adds.
“Of course The Genius marries a Genius.” Derek smiles, “You're a lifesaver, Amelia. You too, PC. Get back to you two soon.” He hangs up.
“To the The Corner Brewery we go.” Emily jangles the keys.

Amelia is in the kitchen making some pasta. No one is hungry, including her. But no one stops her, because she needs something to keep herself busy or she goes back into overthinking mode. Unhealthy for her and the baby.
Penelope sits clacking away at her computer. She had a router backtracking number from the camera she had gotten connected to (the surveillance footage one), so she was hoping she could find the location it was coming from.
Hotch sat across from her, on the phone with Strauss because she was on his ass about his entire team being absent from work with no notice. Hotch was winning the argument, he usually is.
JJ walks into the kitchen, “Can I help?” She offers.
“No, thank you.” Amelia says quietly and politely.
“Amelia,” JJ calls for her attention, “Em and Derek are so close to getting more information. We’ll find him. I promise.”
“Aren't you not allowed to give empty promises like that?” Amelia locks eyes with JJ for the first time all day. It knocks the breath out of Jennifer because she sees just how broken Amelia looks. Her eyes are puffy and rimmed red from constant crying. Her nose is red, and her lips are trembling.
“I’m sorry, I-”
“It’s okay, I just-,” Amelia turns back to the pot she was stirring, “I really want him to come back home, but please stop giving me false hope.”
It breaks JJ’s heart seeing Amelia so broken. They were never super close, but Amelia was Spencer's wife. And, Spencer was her best friend, and that was enough for her to love Amelia.
A knock on the front door breaks the girl's attention away from their brief conversation.
Hotch stands up immediately, and JJ protectively stands in front of Amelia, with her hand immediately on the gun on her waist. Hotch takes a slow step towards the door, and calls out loudly, “Who is it?”
No answer.
Hotch looks back at JJ, and when she nods, indicating she's ready to fire on command, he swiftly opens the door, pulling out his own gun simultaneously. There's no one at the door, which makes Amelia exhale a breath she didn't know she was holding.
Theres a small package on the welcome mat outside, and just as the previous package, in messy handwriting, it has Mrs. Reid scribbled on it.
Hotch quickly looks outside the door left, right, then left again, and brings the package inside. After shutting and locking the door, he places it on the center table.
Amelia, still traumatized from the last thing they received slowly approaches it, “What is it?”
Aaron shrugs, “Light,” he lowers himself to inspect the package before opening it, “doesn't seem like there's much in it.”
“Maybe you should go inside,” Penelope offers, “since last time-”
“No,” Amelia quickly interjects, “I can handle it. I can do it, I have to. This is about my husband.” She inhales deeply, “I can be strong for him. Open it, Aaron,” She encourages him with the fakest face of courage she can muster up.
He waits a moment, but realizes she's not going anywhere. He begins opening the packing cautiously, just to realize it's a cardboard box. Inside is just a disk. A CD. No label, no tag, no writing. Just a CD.
All heads turn to Garcia, and she nods and holds out a palm to Hotch, “Pass it, I’ll check what it is.”
He hands it to her and she inserts into her laptop. Amelia is seated beside her watching her work away on her laptop.
“There’s a single file on here. A video.” She squints at her screen.
Without another movement made by Garcia, a video opens up on her computer. Her and Amelia gasp in unison. It’s Spencer. Tied to a chair, bloody rag covering his now four-fingered hand.
He looks scared, and bloodied and bruised. His hair is matted down to his forehead and one of his eyes is so swollen that it’s shut. Breathing labored, he tilts his up towards the camera slightly, his messy hair moving with him.
Amelias eyes water and her lips tremble. She covers her mouth with a shaky hand to stop herself from crying. Be brave, she reminds herself, be brave and strong for Spencer.
Penelope places her equally shaking hand on her friends thigh, just as to remind her, we’re here for you.
“Whenever you’re ready, Spencie.” A voice says from off camera. Garcia places the laptop front and center on the living room coffee table.
Spencer takes a deep breath, “Amelia,” his bottom lip quivers, “I am so sorry, Sweetheart.” At the mention of the nickname Amelia whimpers. “I didn’t mean for any of this to happen, and I would never have hoped you would be involved in this also.” He shut both his eyes and looked down at his lap. “We’ll figure this out, Buttercup.” This nickname causes Amelia's eyes to water and start streaming silent tears. “Just you and me, against the world.” A small smile from him earns him an identical one from his wife.
“And, Amelia, I promise you,” he swallows hard, looking back up once again. His face almost unrecognizable, this time JJ looks away with her eyes shut, “once I get out of here, you and me, we’ll go on that date to Griffith Park observatory you’ve always wanted to go to. But, maybe we’ll skip the ending, I don’t like the end of the observatory.” Amelia furrows her brows, her heart beating a mile a minute. “And, then, maybe we could watch a movie. Like that one Jim Carrey film. What was it? Something, Ventura? It was top class acting, I know you said that.” Amelia can sense something off, but she couldn’t place her finger on it. She messily wipes her tears, sniffling. She stands up catching the eye of JJ.
“Please, Amelia.” Spencer pleaded desperately, “I love you.” He was crying too. His voice was shaking. He was at his breaking point.
“Hey, Lover Boy!” The same voice from before came loudly. A man walked from behind the camera, keeping in mind of not showing his face. He walks towards Spencer, his back to the viewers, “Would you like to give us the password now?”
Amelias breathing shallowes, and she unconsciously placed a hand on her stomach. As she stares at Spencer with wide eyes, the man swings a punch straight to his gut. “Couldn’t hear you, dear.” He chuckles evilly.
Amelia watches in horror as the man cracks his knuckles, “Speak up for me.'' Another punch gets delivered to her husband's chest.
“Please stop.” Spencer pleaded, spitting blood. The sight made Amelia cry loudly, and Aaron tries to move her from in front of the screen.
“Garcia, turn it off.” He orders, equally shaken up.
“I’m trying,” she cries, tapping at herkeyboard, “it won’t go away.” She sniffles desperately.
“You know what I want. Give it to me, and I’ll stop.” The man threatens. He walks away for a second just to return back into the screen with a large metal rod.
“Garcia!” Aaron scolds loudly.
“It won’t turn off!” She yells back, scared.
Spencer squeezes his eyes shut, and as if Amelia's body couldn’t handle seeing her husband get hurt any longer, her eyes shut on her, and she falls straight to the floor.
“I’ll tell you!” The team hears Spencer plead on camera. But, no one is watching the screen anymore. Instead, they all quickly huddle around Amelia, who lay on the floor. Eyes shut with tears streaking her cheeks. The commotion of the apartment is loud for the next few moments.
Spencer in the video giving a password to his captor. Garcia is on the phone with the police, telling them to send an ambulance to her current address. JJ is trying to wake up Amelia, her head being softly placed onto the agents lap.
JJ strokes Amelia's hair softly, “Amelia, please. Please wake up.” She whispers, her eyes ready to leak tears.
Aaron, in the midst of the chaos, turns his attention to Spencer just to hear him say the last few letters.
“That’s not right.” He mumbles, grabbing JJ’s attention.
“What?” She looks up.
“That’s not the code. If the code they want is the Integrity Files one, he gave them a faulty password.”
“Why would he do that?” She asks.
A few moments later, paramedics rush into the apartment. After Garcia argues her way into the ambulance also, JJ and Aaron agree to meet at the hospital.
“I’ll let Derek and Emily know.” JJ says to Garcia as she sits next to a still unconscious Amelia. Penelope nods and the medics shut the ambulance doors.

Back at The Corner Brewery, Derek and Emily walk with purpose. The barista asks them for their orders.
“No coffee, although, we were wondering if you guys had a bulletin board of any sort?” Emily asks as Derek takes a look around.
The cafe was very large. It was busy, and the amount of customers made Derek nervous if they would find any information they seeked.
“Yes,” the man behind the counter replied bored, “we allow paying customers to post any advertisements they want over there.” He points to a cork board that hung at the end of the store.
Very big, and very much covered in papers, and stickers and flyers.
They nod, and before heading to the board, Derek feels the need to flash his badge. Just to show that he has a reason to be here.
“Where do we start?” Emily gawks at the board. There’s at least 50 different papers layered on top of one another.
The two agents start to remove paper by paper to see if they can see any ads that may stand out. After half an hour of unsuccessful searching, Derek excused himself.
“I gotta take a bathroom break, Prentiss.” He walks away as she nods. He walks up to the barista and asks for the men’s room. As he’s about to walk away, he catches glimpse of a page hanging behind the wall the barista stood in front of. “Hey, my man.” He grabs the servers attention, “What’s that?” He points to the page.
The barista comes by. He tears the paper off the wall and hands it to him. “An ad, probably hung up by one of the other servers here. Customers aren’t allowed back here.” He gives a half shrug before walking away.

Derek rushes back to Em to show her what he found.
“Hey, check this out.” He hands it to her.
She reads it over. It looks simple, like it was printed at home. A stock photo image of a computer with a large red cross over it. The heading was big and bold. Loud enough to catch attention.
At the bottom of the page, there was a name and number.
“Leonel Cassum.” Emily reads the name at the bottom.
“I think we should give him a call,” Derek looks over at the number, “after that bathroom break.” He turns back around to where he was before.

“So, Leonel,” Derek starts, sitting opposite of the male they called in for questioning, “tell me, how’s business?”
He’s confused. The freckles on his nose move as he scrunches his nose, “It’s alright, going decent enough.” He looks from Derek to Emily and back. “Am I allowed to ask why I’m here?”
Derek gives a large smile, almost condescendingly, “Of course you are,” he pauses, waving over Emily. She hands him a folder. “now, do you know who Dr. Spencer Reid is?”
The young blonde shakes his head. “No, why am I here?” There’s a shake in his voice.
“Because,” Emily takes a seat next to Derek, “Dr. Reid is missing. And you’re our only lead. The whole case is sitting on your shoulders.” She points her index to him.
He stares back, mouth agape, “W-what? No, no that’s not possible.” He leans forward, “Look, you guys have the wrong guy. I didn’t do anything. I don’t even know who that is!” He looks desperately from one agent to the other.
“Really?” Emily raises an eyebrow, “Well, it says in your call records,” she opens her folder, “that you spoke to Dr. Reid exactly three months ago. It was a five minute long call. He had called you, at,” she squints at her page, “8 in the morning. Early, huh?” She looks to Morgan.
“Well, maybe Leonel here isn’t an early riser. That’s why he doesn’t remember who he spoke with. Right, Leonel?” Derek looks to their guest.
He stares back, “I- I may have spoken to him.” He shrugs, “But, I speak to a lot of people everyday. It’s nothing significant.”
“Well, it must’ve been. Because, you spoke to him on a Friday, and agreed the very next day. Fast service for such a busy company.” Emily counters.
Leonel looks to the dark haired agent, “It must’ve been a slow weekend, I really don’t know what you guys are intending.” He continues his innocence.
Emily stands up slamming the table with her palms, scaring the kid, “We’re intending you spoke to the Doctor, came to his house, placed a blocker in his home,” she inches close to Leonel's face, “and have been watching him like a stalker since then. Now he’s gone missing! So, who’s head is that on? Yours!” She yells in his face.
Leonel scoots back, “I didn’t do any of that!” He cries.
“We have footage of you walking into his apartment, Leonel!” Emily walks around the table so she’s next to his chair, “How much are you going to lie before you break?” She stares at him menacingly. Derek quietly watches, playing the good cop between them.
Leonel's shoulders start to shake.
“I’m real tight on money.” He squeaks. “Some guy came up to me at a cafe and told me he’d pay me hefty if I just go along with a few things he wanted.” He looks to Derek, almost ignoring Emily.
“It started off small, like just making a flyer. Then he told me I'd receive a call,” he wipes his nose with his sleeve, “and after a few days, I did. I was told what to say, and I did exactly that.” He wipes his tears quickly, “All I did was set up a small blocker in his apartment.” His breathing gets shaky again, “But, that’s all! That’s all I did! I didn’t kidnap anyone! I didn’t hurt anyone! I swear!” He cries.
Emily goes back around next to Derek, “If he’s saying the truth, then there’s another surveillance guy.”
“I don’t know who he is,” Leonel speaks quietly, “but,” he swallows hard, “I can tell you where he’s at. I heard the guys who hired me talk about it once.”
Leonel gets sat with a facial artist first, to hopefully get a rough sketch of the man who hired him. And then he gives the address of what he thinks should be the place the creep who was watching Spencer is set up.

Derek drives to the given address, which happens to be just a street opposite of Spencer and Amelia's abode.
“Makes sense, seeing as how close this is to Amelia's place,” Emily gets out of the passenger seat and looks up at a tall building, squinting as the sun hits her eyes.
“Well, this is the address blondie gave us, so let's give it a look.” Derek starts to walk into the apartment complex before them.
They walk in and quickly come to realize that anything could happen in this building, and no one would know. The place was empty. Maybe there were residents living there, but whoever they were, they were very much to themselves.
The two agents make sure their badges are on display on their belts, and start to inspect the building. Slowly making their way up each floor, they finally stop at the 7th floor. As the elevator doors open, Derek stops the doors from closing with his hands, “Well, this looks promising.”
The floor seemed to be under construction. Paint buckets laid everywhere, and plastic sheets hung from the walls.
As the two stepped out of the elevator, they hear a paint can fall in the distance. Instantly whipping their head in that direction, Emily calls out loudly, “Federal Agents! Who's there?”
When instead of a reply they hear footsteps running, both of them grab a hold of their weapons and start running towards the sound. Derek gives a quick and quiet hand motion, telling Emily to split up to over more ground.
It a large floor and the place is split into different sections just by plaster or lanky wood. Once the footsteps stop, the only sound they hear is wind and their own breathing. Neither of the agents say a word.
Then, a sound behind Morgan, something sounding like a rustling makes him whip his entire body around and instinctively tackle. And rightfully so, because down goes the man they’re supposedly looking for.
Emily comes running up next to the two men who are wrestling, (although Morgan is most definitely winning). She hands Derek a pair of handcuffs and pulls out her vibrating cell to see JJs caller ID.
“Great time, JJ,” She breathes into the phone catching her breath. “We’ve got good news.”
“I’ve got some bad news.” JJ says at the same time on the other end. When Emily doesn’t say anything else, she continues, “What’s the good news?”
Emily walks a few feet away from Derek as he forces his handcuffed man up forcefully. She walks towards a set up right by an open window. A camera, a laptop, a few other boxes that are beeping green and red, and something that she didn’t expect; a large sniper rifle. All aiming straight at the dear doctors apartment.
“We found our peeping Tom. Well, he seems more like sniping Tom, but you know what I mean.” Emily says, “What’s the bad news?” She furrows her brows.
“Amelia fainted at the apartment.” JJ says, “We received a video of Spencer and she passed out while watching it. We’re headed to the hospital now.”
“Okay, we’ll meet you there.” Em replies, following Derek into the elevator.
“Oh, yeah, and Em?”
“Yeah?”
“This is about the Integrity Case. The kidnappers were torturing Reid for the password on camera.”

We’re so sorry. Sorry. So sorry. We tried. Our deepest condolences.
It doesn’t make any sense to Amelia. Sorry about what? She can barely remember what’s happened, and here doctors and nurses apologizing to her.
She continues to stay silent as a male doctor stands before her speaking of something that doesn’t register in her brain.
She’s in a hospital. She knows that. She’s been changed into a gown, she knows that also. Her mind feels woozy, that’s something also.
A nurse steps in front of her, “Is there anything I can do for you, Darling? Before we leave you for a bit.”
Amelia licks her lips before speaking, “I’m just a little lost,” as she speaks, she realizes she’s slurring her words slightly, “what’s happened?” She blinks hard.
“Oh,” the nurses blinks, “well, you’re friends out there say you had a fainting episode. And, well, sometimes if the body is undergoing a lot of stress, it can put a lot of stress on the baby also.” She's speaking slowly and clearly- unlike the doctor before her. “Sometimes, that can cause the fetus to get over worked,” she tilts her head slightly, “and, in your case, unfortunately, the fetus was far too young to try and save.”
The words slowly start to settle into Amelia's already foggy brain. Her hand goes onto her stomach.
Sorry. So sorry. We’re so sorry.
“We did try our best, but there was only so little we could do.” The nurse says sympathetically.
“The baby,” Amelia's voice is quiet, “the baby… is gone?” She asks in utter disbelief.
“We are so terribly sorry for your loss, hun.”
And before another word can leave anyone else’s mouth, Amelia's shoulders start to tremble as she breaks down. Loud cries leave her room as she cries over the loss of her unborn child.
A nurse comes outside and informs the team of what happened. Some shed a tear, others conceal their feelings till they’re in private. But they all hear the cries from Amelias room. Loud and clear.
It’s all pent up feelings.
Grief, because even if the baby wasn’t in her arms, it was still inside her. She was still talking to the baby. Telling them about what a great father Spencer is. Talking to them about how wonderful a mother she will be also. How much she’s looking forward to them growing everyday. Telling them just how much they’re loved, even before they’ve entered the world.
Anger, because Spencer isn’t here with Amelia. He didn’t know she was pregnant, much less know she’s lost the baby. She knows it’s ridiculous to be angry, but she is upset. He should’ve been here. If he was here, she wouldn’t have lost the baby.
She knows it’s not his fault. He wanted a family just as much Amelia did. They’d been trying for years, and when they did finally succeed-
Amelia screams. Again, and again, and again.
Some words. Some just incoherent screams. Her voice is not nearly loud enough to express all the emotions she’s feeling. Her screams boom through the whole maternity ward. While some mothers are cradling their newborns, this mother is mourning the loss of hers.
JJ decides to stay back with Amelia, even if it does mean just waiting in the waiting room. Garcia and Derek team together to go back to the apartment to gather all their belongings to head back to the office. Hotch and Emily agree to head into question their newfound suspect.
Amelia is left alone in the room.
Missing her husband.
Missing her child.
Losing everyone she loves, one by one.

Going in blind: Watching season 4 for the first time. Random thoughts.
I never said anything about it before but I love Shadow Weaver's DCAU Batman eyes. They're so expressive.
Episode 1: Okay...I wasn't expecting Catra to do that. I mean, it makes sense. If she has leverage over Hordak then she's basically in charge of the Horde and that's what she's wanted (or at least believes she wants) since episode 1. It's an aspect that made her a good antagonist, that she's not blind to the evil of the Horde, she just doesn't care as long as she herself is secure. Which naturally begs the question, when the rebellion and the princesses are crushed, when the Horde is on top, when Adora is dead, when Catra finally has everything she's ever wanted...will she actually finally be happy? Somehow, I have my doubts.
I definitely feel for Glimmer in this. When you go through as big a loss as she did you need to be able to feel and vent if you're ever going to get through it. It doesn't have to be right away but everyone doing everything in their power to avoid the topic entirely can make you feel like you're going crazy. It'a especially bad for her since it unintentionally makes it feel like everyone is acting like it doesn't matter that Angela is gone when it clearly means everything to Glimmer.
Episode 2: I actually had a potted cactus plant once. Accidentally forgot about it and left it outside for an entire winter. Once the snow was gone the cactus looked like it had melted.
I kind of want to see what an interaction between Double Trouble and Clayface from the Harley Quinn animated series would look like. I'm guess Catra was just testing how good Double Trouble was as a doppelganger because it doesn't seem like she did anything while Adora was being distracted, though I suppose that could be a reveal in a later episode.
Not much to say except that I love how buff Huntara is while still clearly being a woman. Like, women can have a variety of different body types, as this series and Steven Universe show, and Huntara's build isn't just, like, Bow's body with lipstick and ponytail and the animators calling it a day. No, she looks like a freakin' jacked adult woman.
Episode 3: I didn't figure out the Flutterina = Double Trouble twist until a minute before it was revealed, so good job there. Before that I was wondering if Flutterina was some fan's original character where they won some contest where their OC got to be in the show for an episode. She was giving off some weird self-insert vibes. That twist made it all work though. It's honestly not a bad plan. Shapeshifters haven't really been a thing in the series before now so there's no reason to suspect it. Even if they did they'd probably be expecting it by way of magic or technology, while Double Trouble's seems to be a natural ability.
I like that even though Bow is definitely the goofier one of the trio he is still consistently shown as competent. That's never in question. He was very heroic and reassuring to the villagers this episode. I get why those kids idolize him so much.
Catra's having guilt over what she did with the portal and to Entrapta and her response is basically to just double-down. She doesn't know any other way to be. Not going to lie, I am kind of hoping we get another moment in the show where Adora just completely overwhelms Catra with the sheer power of She-Ra. I'm not saying like brutalize her or anything but just something where Catra is made to realize just how powerful Adora is and that she could just destroy Catra if she had a mind to do so.
Episode 4: Well, I was saying I wanted Adora to do it but I guess I don't mind Glimmer being the one to get some good shots in on Catra. Like I predicted, Shadow Weaver's moving in to become her teacher like she was with her father. Honestly I like that that was more Adora's problem than Glimmer using her as bait, which she seemed to get over pretty quick. Yeah, it was kind of a heartless thing to do but it was an understandable tactic and she clearly outright told Adora that she did it and why afterwards, which at least means she's still being honest.
It occurs to me that Glimmer and Catra may be the ones running parallel right now. Both are basically leading their respective sides of the war. They both have lost someone very important to them. And both are trusting someone they probably shouldn't. Both even have outfits that've been updated in the intro. The difference is Glimmer's just trying to deal with a bad situation while Catra's is entirely self-inflicted.
Minor thing but I like Glimmer's new outfit this season. I'm sure this is the intention but it makes her look older and more mature. A little more muscular in some shots too.
Episode 5: Heart of Etheria project. No idea what that is but assumedly whoever's a part of it doesn't like Light Hope and Mara being friends. Sounds like it's very much interested in She-Ra being just a warrior, and perhaps a tool, for the greater good. It does make me wonder though how much Light Hope remember from when she was rebooting. Even if she deleted the Mara memory she could potentially still have the memory of her and Adora watching the Mara memory, as well as Adora asking to be her friend.
Episode 6: Yep. Scorpia; definitely favorite supporting character. There is something kind of funny about her whole "Scorpions are loyal" line when you remember the story about the Frog and the Scorpion, where it stings the frog despite it meaning death for itself as well simply because that is its nature. But finally we're having someone go save Entrapta, and I can only assume at some point Scorpia's going to access the power of the Black Garnet.
The parallels between Catra and Hordak are definitely at their max here with that speech of hers to him. She's basically trying to convince herself that she doesn't need anyone, the timing of which is appropriate since she just drove away Scorpia and now truly doesn't have anyone. Not that I blame Scorpia, obviously. Like Adora before her, however good you believe someone can be and that you can help them, at some point you just have to cut the toxic people out of your life. You have the right to be happy too.
And man, Bow is just the best. He saw something was wrong between Adora and Glimmer and defused the situation like (snap) that, pushing them to talk like any sane person would.
Episode 7: I'm sure it is just because I've seen way too many TV shows and movies (both animated and live action) that don't do it but it is just such a relief to have a show where the characters just TALK and LISTEN to each other. It doesn't solve all their issues but they're at least not being stupid and freakin' petty. It helps the drama feel a lot less forced and contrived.
Episode 8: A little bit of amusement in Bow thinking at first that Glimmer and Adora didn't even notice he was gone despite them coming to his rescue very shortly afterwards, given Catra is only now realizing Scorpia has left and assumedly she did so a while ago. Bow and Sea Hawk hadn't been gone for that long so it's not unreasonable Glimmer and Adora wouldn't be worried about their absence (Bow was literally talking about "me time" when they last saw him), while Catra is only noticing Scorpia's absence now and it was because she wanted something. Like Scorpia said, she's a bad friend.
Kind of ironic given that a lot of Catra's issues are the direct result of Shadow Weaver giving her very little love growing up but it does seem this tough love is probably what'll get through to Catra the best. She might finally stop making bad decisions and lashing out if she's forced to live with the consequences of them, like Adora told her last season.
Glimmer gets a bit of slack from me since she suffered through a huge loss, that being her mother, and then was immediately thrown into being queen right after. It'd be hard for anyone to be 100% on their game and well-adjusted in a situation like that, and I buy that she was on some level resentful of Adora for coming back instead of her mother, even if unintentionally so. What definitely helps is that Glimmer very clearly and immediately regretted what she said to Adora. Like Catra she's lashing out but unlike Catra Glimmer recognizes some of the damage she's doing and knows, at least in this case, that she went too far.
Episode 9: Now that I can see the design in color I definitely prefer Mara's She-Ra with pants to Adora's She-Ra with shorts. Honestly, while the differences are pretty minor, I do think Mara's She-Ra design is overall a lot better than Adora's. Sharper shoulder guards. Bigger cape (especially the cape, I love capes). I don't know, there's just a lot that clicks with it and I wouldn't mind Adora getting a similar outfit later.
Madam Razz definitely had a Yoda feel this episode. I was very much expecting her to start wacking Mara with a stick over the sugar like Yoda did with R2. Though while that was Yoda acting crazy, for Razz it's because she experiences time out of order, and I don't think I've ever seen that concept taken to this extent, or at least done this way before. There are characters like River Song from Doctor Who, Professor Paradox from Ben 10, or even the Reverse-Flash who interact with other characters in time out of order but those characters are still on a linear path from their own perspective, even when travelling through time. Razz is just bouncing around her own timeline, seemingly not even any real reason or cause to it like Subaru from Re:Zero. Clearly she's not just remembering things oddly because her talk about things of the present are heard by people in the past and have an effect. I wonder if maybe the reason why is because Razz was at ground zero of Mara's actions and this is a side-effect of pulling Etheria away from the rest of the universe.
Bringing more Star Wars into this, it basically sounds like the Heart of Etheria project has turned Etheria into a magic Starkiller Base; storing power that'll be unleashed to destroy whole planets. And jeez, I think this was the first time I really felt creeped out by Light Hope when she was talking to Mara.
I'm looking forward to seeing what it means that the First Ones only made the sword and that Etheria made She-Ra. If that's the case, why is only the sword able to bring out the She-Ra form? Is it like MCU Thor's hammer and the weapon was just meant to help him control the power he already had? Or is what we think is She-Ra not actually She-Ra and that form that Adora and Mara take is just a stand-in for the real thing?
Episode 10: It didn't even occur to me until now but Double Trouble's capture is another blow to Catra's circle of "friends" too. They were at least able to make her laugh. One less person for her to talk to and just...really just distract her from her thoughts.
It's a good dilemma this episode presents about what to do with the Heart of Etheria. The safest and probably best option is to just dismantle it, like Adora and Bow want, since it could easily lead to the destruction of the entire planet if it goes off. Not the mention there's so little they know about it and what it was intended for and the one person who can potentially tell them, Light Hope, they were warned not to trust. But it's not hard to understand where Glimmer is coming from in wanting to use that power to fight the Horde. They're already losing the war and now she knows Hordak Prime and his FAR more powerful forces are on the way. Tapping into the Heart is a huge risk but she's not seeing any other paths for the rebels to win. It's a really good dilemma, with good arguments presented from both sides, and I buy this widening the schism between Adora and Glimmer.
Episode 11: I have mixed feelings on King Micah still being alive. On the one hand there's a lot of good potential interactions we can now have with him, primarily between Glimmer and Shadow Weaver, and he is a fun character. But on the other I can't help but wonder if this kind of lessens the impact of what Angela gave up to overcome the false reality. Part of what made it so emotional was that she had to accept the person she loved was dead and not coming back...except now we see that he wasn't dead and now he is coming back. Yeah, their family lost out on years together and that does still carry some emotional weight but I was already also half-expecting Angela to come back later in the series because she's stuck between dimensions, meaning there's a chance she could still be alive. If both Glimmer's parents come back then that really feels like it takes a lot of weight out of her story. But I guess we'll see what happens.
Also, why did the Horde exile him to Beast Island? Why not just kill him?!
Episode 12: So the Horde exiles Micah to Beast Island instead of killing him. The First Ones protect their secrets by sending their bad tech to Beast Island. Does no one know how to just destroy things in this world?
Ohhh, I am so looking forward to next episode. While it's debatable whether Glimmer should be going through with her plan she is at least being smart with how she's going about it. Double Trouble was being paid by Catra to work for the Horde, not out of any sense of loyalty. Glimmer has the resources of Bright Moon at her disposal so it's reasonable she could pay them more to switch sides. Double Trouble was very good at sabotaging even a group as tight-nit as the heroes, so Hordak and Catra are probably easy pickings with all their issues.
Episode 13: ....WELL THAT AIN'T GOOD!
I'll admit, I had a little bit of an unintended laugh. After all we've heard about Horde Prime, like this shadowy all-powerful monster, I wasn't expecting the fabulous flowing dreadlocks and smoothness. Credit where it's due, man has charisma and charm, which goes a long way in helping your big evil world conqueror not be a very flat character, because it's doubtful he's going to have the same kind of sympathetic motivation as Hordak or complexity as Catra to keep him elevated.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Double Trouble kicking at Catra while she's down. Adora and Scorpia were honest but they never wanted to hurt Catra. Not so much with Double Trouble and they just shove reality into her face. Everyone leaves Catra because of Catra. She's the common factor. It's her fault and no one else's. Again, I don't know for certain if Adora and Catra get together at the end (Catra would have a LOT to make amends for regardless) but Double Trouble was definitely implying Catra had feelings for her with the way they put Catra's hand on "Adora's" cheek while talking about how she left her.
I like that we see Glimmer's plan actually working at first. The princesses get a massive power boost and decimate the Horde forces. But the minute it starts going wrong she immediately admits Adora was right and she tries to stop the energy flow. I imagine having her there with Catra was intentional by the writers. Despite some parallels, Glimmer can actually accept her failures and work to try and fix things. Unlike Catra, she didn't blame Adora for things going wrong.
So the sword allows the First Ones to control She-Ra and the energy she'd be absorbing from the planet. Assumedly that means there are at least some parts to She-Ra that have nothing to do with the First Ones and thus maybe Adora can still use some of those powers without the sword.
Season 4 verdict: Yeah, the show keeps getting better, though I will admit last season's finale had me more emotional, but that's a bit of an unfair comparison given everything that happened in that finale vs. this one. This is definitely the series hitting its darkest hour, where it feels like EVERYONE lost. Not just the rebels but the Horde as well. The sword and Light Hope are gone and She-Ra (for now) along with them. Glimmer and Catra are basically prisoners. Hordak's probably going to have his personality stripped away. The Fright Zone is in ruins. The only one who's gained anything is Prime.
Really looking forward to what the final season has in store, especially since there seems to be the implication that Catra just saved Glimmer's life.

A Legend All Their Own, Chapter 49: The Important Mission
Summary: Princess Wanda has a very important job for Peter Parker.

When Wanda and Vision exited their tent, they found the Avengers and Doctor Strange waiting for them.. minus Peter, whom they could see rushing about the campsite as everyone was packing up, carrying out a task that Wanda had left for him on the day before. At the other end of the camp, Thor appeared to giving the Asgardian soldiers a pep talk, Loki at his side.
"So" Natasha looked at them, a sly smirk crossing her face, "Sounds like you two had a bit of fun last night."
"Uh.."
"Well.."
Both Vision and Wanda blushed bright red at the Black Widow's words. Pretending you didn't care who had heard you making love was much, much easier when everyone around had very politely agreed not to acknowledge that they had, in fact, heard you.
"It's alright, you won't get any judgement from me, kids" Tony winked at them, which only made them blush redder. "We could all be dead soon, after all. If you have one last chance to get lucky, I say go for it!"
"Excuse me!" Steve glared at both Natasha and Tony, looking scandalized at the exchange he had just witnessed. "Avengers, could we try and show a little bit of respect, please? This is our soon to be King and Queen you're talking to. Princess Wanda, Vision, I'm so sorry about my teammates behavior.."
"It's alright" Vision managed to speak. "Really."
"But.." Steve frowned.
"Really, it's okay" Wanda added with a smile, though her cheeks were still slightly pink. "What kind of King and Queen would we be if we didn't allow a few special privileges to the friends who helped get us there? A little bit of light teasing now and then is acceptable, don't you think Vizh?"
"Yes, I find that perfectly acceptable" Vision agreed, grinning, pressing a kiss to the top of her head.
"Spoken like true royalty" Doctor Strange smiled, bowing to them both.
"That they did" Clint bowed as well. "And might I say, nobody here is going to die anytime soon. We're all going to live long happy lives annoying our new King and Queen and making them question why the hell they made us their advisers."
The whole group laughed, and a few moments later, Peter came sprinting over to them, clutching a stack of sealed envelopes.
"I collected everyone's letters home, Princess Wanda, just like you asked" Peter said, a little breathless.
"Thank you, Peter" Wanda smiled at him.
"You said you might have another important job for me?"
"I do" Wanda nodded. "A very important job. I need you to take all those letters and make sure they get delivered to the right people."
"Oh.." Peter's face fell a little. "Y-Yeah, I can do that, I guess."
"You guess?" The Princess stood a little shorter than Peter, but in this moment, she seemed to almost tower over him. Her eyes flashed red. The presence of the Scarlet Witch, the future Queen of Sokovia, flowed over them all, her authority unquestionable. "I need you to more than guess, boy. This is an enormous responsibility. Possibly the biggest responsibility I have ever handed out. If any of our people fall in this war, their families deserve to know that they were thinking about them."
"Of course, Princess Wanda" Peter gulped.
"So, can you do it then? Can you make sure these letters get delivered?" Her voice was deadly serious.
"Yes, I can do it" Peter nodded eagerly. "I swear to you, Princess Wanda, every one of these letters will reach their destination!"
All of the Avengers watched Wanda's conversation with Peter, slightly awestruck. No longer the troubled girl they had met at the beginning of this whole crazy adventure, they now saw a Queen in waiting, ready to take her throne. Vision, of course, was not surprised at all. He'd always known she had it in her. Even though Wanda had not officially been born into the throne, Vision believed that she was made for this, to be a Queen people could truly love. And wherever she belonged, his place was at her side.
"Good boy. I knew I'd made the right choice" The red faded from Wanda's eyes, returning them to their usual soft green. "Make sure you take enough food and water with you, and stay off the road, so no one sees you. Just follow the river and you should make it back home to Leestown in a couple of days. You'll be able to send the letters on from there."
"Got it."
"Good. Your future Queen wishes you safe passage, Peter Parker." Wanda pressed a kiss to his forehead.
Peter blushed furiously, but stood tall, saluting her.
"I won't let you down!" He rushed off to gather everything he needed for his special mission. Wanda gazed fondly after him.
"Okay" Tony gathered his jaw from the floor, turning to Wanda once Peter was out of earshot, "I have to hand it to you Princess, that was absolutely brilliant."
"What was?" Wanda questioned.
"That" Tony gestured wildly with his arms. "You know, what you just did with the kid. Tricking him into staying safe by making him think he's doing something important."
"It worked because she didn't need to 'trick' him at all" Vision pointed out.
"Vision's right" Wanda smiled. "I didn't. Peter is doing something important, just something important that requires him to be far away from the battlefield. There are ways to include him without putting him in danger."
"Interesting.. and still brilliant" Tony grinned.
Wanda chuckled, but it didn't take long for the more somber mood to settle back over the group. They were ready to move. --
Onward they marched. This felt much different from the other days of the trip. Everyone was armed and ready for battle. A sense of dread and anticipation hung in the air.
They could hear others marching ahead of them.. and then the second group of marching feet stopped. A nervous murmur passed over the Sokovia/Asgard army, but they pushed on. As they marched, dark clouds appeared over head. The trees around them thinned, the forest slowly morphing into mostly open space. On the other side of it, stood Ultron's army, and at the head of it, King Ultron himself.
Wanda's heart raced. She hadn't seen Ultron in the flesh since before she had fled the castle. Vision saw the look on her face, and reached for her hand, giving it a comforting squeeze. She looked up at him, managing a small smile.
"Here we go.."
Vision nodded, taking a shaky breath.
"Here we go.."
