Waver 1 - 13 (FINAL) | Prisma Illya 1 - 10 (FINAL) | Prisma Illya 2wei! 1 - 3
Another (and to be honest, the last) batch of impressions from the Fate/ project.
Waver 1
Well, thisā€™ll be interesting. Iā€™ve been hyping this show up for a while for myself, so letā€™s see how it goes.
Geez, this intro is like a dang movie! Iā€™d love to see a proper Troyca movie! (<-Says the fan of Troyca.)
Wait, if itā€™s Kayneth Archibald, then is Archibald relatd to Archisorte? Or am I just making thing up hereā€¦? Also note Reines refers to Kayneth as ā€œKayneth El-Melloi Archibaldā€, possibly meaning Archibald is the middle name, since El-Melloi is a shared surname (or is that a titleā€¦?). That probably means Archibald =/= Archisorte and both are similar-sounding middle names. The fact Reines is Kaynethā€™s niece also explains things quite a bit.
Why is Waver upside downā€¦? Wonā€™t the blood rush to his head soon? (Sure, it allows me to ogle his hair more, butā€¦logic rules more than my stupid whims, yā€™know?)
Interesting. You can see that although Waver grew out his hair, thereā€™s two layers to it ā€“ the longer one in the front and the shorter one in the back. (Iā€™m just curious because I like the hime cut ā€“ which is pretty similar - and long hair on dudes in general, in part because both are fairly rare.)
Okay, that explained my gripe with upside-down Waver. Thanks, Reines. (<-genuine)
Aw, Waver buddy, even at this stage, youā€™re plenty cute. Donā€™t ever change! (<- As you can see, I am an easily pleased person in most cases.)
Melvin who now???
Troycaā€™s comic animation rules! Itā€™s too bad Idolish7 Second Beat is using chibis instead of thisā€¦
Professor Kayneth. I forgot he had a formal title. I wonder, does Waver - I mean, El-Melloi II ā€“ have that title as well?
I guess I shouldā€™ve known Saber had the capability to look scary, butā€¦I never knew Saber could look so scaryā€¦
*cut to eyecatch* - *points at eyecatch* Okay, someone tried to save budget here, didnā€™t they???
Aw, friendship between fiction boys is cuteā€¦until it involves the puking up on blood on one end.
Waver is the OG underdog hereā€¦donā€™tcha think?
ā€œā€¦with several demands.ā€ ā€“ Uh-ohā€¦this is gonna be bad, isnā€™t it?
You need a Tuner for Magic Crests? (ā€¦Like a tuning fork, but a person?) *brow raised in suspicion*
ā€¦is it appropriate for me to say ā€œOh, good lord!ā€ now? (Okay, I did that rather deliberately, but normally in these notes Iā€™d self-censor it to be ā€œoh, goodnessā€ or something like that.)
Seriously, the black-haired dude in the Ionian Hetairoi is my favourite, even if only because he looks like Waver (and heā€™s really easy to spot, to boot).
Why is this in first person??? Iā€™ve dropped entire shows based on their usage of 1st person cam! Room Mate and Makura no Danshi basically scarred me for life on that frontā€¦and both of those are TV shorts!
Hey, wait a second. This ā€œuse a quote on the titlecardā€ thing is clearly an Ei Aoki sort of thing to do. I mean, itā€™s in ID: Invaded as wellā€¦
Waver 2
*new blonde girl appears* - So this is the rumoured Animusphere girl (Mary), huh?
Bounded field, huh? Iā€™m glad I chose to watch F/Z before this, then. Now I actually understand the (rough) mechanics of how that works.
Thereā€™s assassins and then thereā€™s Assassinsā€¦*thinks about the Holy Grail War*
As it turns out, astromancy is basically astrology.
The one thing that bugs me about ā€œModern Magecraftā€ (thereā€™s a similar concept of New Magic in Mairimashita! Iruma-kun) isā€¦how is the magic ā€œmodernā€ā€¦? Especially in a work like this, where the magic is based in arcane rituals and bloodlinesā€¦you really need to establish how the ā€œmodernā€ bit works.
Gray is facing away from the Animusphere girl (Mary), I noticed.
ā€œWhen you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.ā€ ā€“ Sherlock Holmes ā€“ Basically, the fact Iā€™ve memorised this quote is one of the lingering impacts of my time in the Detective Conan fandom, as it can be used on things like quizzes, not just mysteries.
Can we please use proper English, Waver??? (Says me to a character whose name I still find nonsensical enough to not be proper English.) As I said previously, ā€œwhydunitā€ is modus operandi or motiveā€¦the new bit is ā€œhowdunitā€, which would be the method.
I do believe the geocentric model was overthrown by people like Kepler.
Gray kind of looks like Saber with that hairstyle, come to think of it.
With the way Gray hides herself under that hood, itā€™s no mystery as to why guys love herā€¦at least, I know ThatRandomEditor does. Of course, Iā€™m heavily neutral on the whole affair because I donā€™t swing that way, butā€¦you knowā€¦
LEMPC seems to stand for ā€œLord El-Melloi Production Committeeā€, if Iā€™m guessing right.
I seem to remember there was a quote somewhere that said the only constant in this world was changeā€¦hmm.
Waver 3
They seem to keep calling Japan ā€œthe Far Eastā€ (or at least, Japan is part of the Far East). Thatā€™s a pretty antiquated term for a supposedly ā€œmodernā€ magic anime. I get vaguely peeved by the term ā€œthe Far Eastā€ because it causes people to take an oriental viewpoint on things and thus itā€™s kind of like people from the Anglosphere looking down on Asians. (I also get vaguely peeved by the term ā€œWesternersā€ for much the same reason and ā€œCaucasiansā€ because it implies all people of the Anglosphere come from the Caucasus, which is falseā€¦then again, these niggles are specific to international studies, so I have a vested interest in explaining them.)
ā€¦Wow, that star-eyepatch girl isā€¦really something, to be thirsty specifically for Waverā€™s Iron Claw. (Then again, with my weird tastes in things, who am I to critique her?)
Flitz von Erich. I was surprised to learn this guy actually existsā€¦on Wikipedia, at the very least.
ā€œAny lady should know about wrestling.ā€ ā€“ I disagree, Luvia.
Blue furry electrical creatureā€¦I dunno how the zoology in this show works, but the fantasy series Iā€™m reading as of the time I was typing this comment has a blue creature called a Raiju (literally ā€œthunder beastā€ in Japanese, so it would suit the ā€œThunderā€ in the episode title). If itā€™s anything like that, Iā€™d laugh myself silly.
This girl on the poster seems to be called Flan Noir (or something similar).
ā€œā€¦yellow, round, fluffy-smellingā€¦ā€ ā€“ What? Svin, you have no right to call a girl those words!
When is this series set if people donā€™t have phones as a standard? *Googles* Okay, if F/SN is set in 2004, then F/Z is 1994. That would make sense, actually. The internet as we know it was first used in 1995 and didnā€™t become widespread for home use until a few years later, as I remember having computers in 2004 (albeit the blocky ones with the dial-up).
I was looking at images for the source material and I think I know why I like Waver (aside from the fact he has long hair). Normally I like the boys whose appearances are hard to get right, such as Enā€¦Waver in the novels and manga for this series sometimes looks grumpy, sometimes he looks constipated and worst of all, sometimes he looks like Snape with a hook nose.
Okay, so I googled Caules to figure out who his sister wasā€¦and I got Apocrypha spoilers. See, his sister is Fiore, who is apparently in that series.
The videos got encoded funny againā€¦
There seems to be a mystery around why Svin and Gray canā€™t be togetherā€¦well, one deeper than just ā€œSvin is gaga for Gray [for reasons we donā€™t know at this point in time]ā€.
Ha, the El-Melloi Class is basically just the Misfit Class from Mairimashita! Iruma-kun.
ā€œOnly the flesh was bitten off.ā€ Ā
This Jupiter gibberish, I assume, is drawing upon the mythology of Jupiter ā€“ that is, Zeus ā€“ as the god of thunder and king of the gods (thus presiding over living beings).
The English is good on the bill, bar a space between ā€œMystics of magecraftā€.
Norwich is apparently a ā€œfacultyā€ which the Modern Magecraft Theories guys ā€“ i.e. Waver ā€“ rule over.
Can you imagine Waver swearing? Since I had the volume off, I basically made him say ā€œā€¦if Sir Gueldoa had resorted to brute force, we wouldā€™ve been f***edā€ in my headā€¦and that was hilarious.
Aw, thanks 7Mononoke. ā€œA cowardly thief sneaks away in the night. If you stride away, bursting with song, you are a conquering king.ā€ Thatā€™s a quote from Rider himself.
So the Association has set positions for Masters in the War? Geeshā€¦that must be hard on Waver to find out theyā€™re closed, considering how much Waver pines for Rider.
Waver 4
I finally got the chance to listen to the ED last ep and now itā€™s the OP I can hear properly. This OP isnā€™t particularly impressive, considering itā€™s an instrumental (instrumentals always seem to have less impact for me unless Iā€™m looking for something to chill to), but it does capture the London-esque spirit of the setting very well.
Whatā€™s up with this metal (?) maid off to the side, anyway?
ā€œGood thinking to leave the door openā€¦ā€ ā€“ For some reason, even though itā€™s a completely different and much more benign context, this made me think of KyoAni and my heart sunk. Ā
Atrum Galliastaā€¦I hate that man. He may look hot, but he was nothing but a b*stard to Medea.
Bolo tiesā€¦nrghā€¦Basically, ever since Arima wore a bolo tie, Iā€™ve become fairly bugged by them. Thatā€™s why Bramā€™s bugs me.
Aw, Waver, buddy, plase donā€™t sacrifice yourself again. I read on the wiki you become a Servantā€™s vessel (specifically for Zhu Ge Liang), so keep your hopes up.
Iā€™m seriously feeling ID: Invaded vibes from this episode, what with the lightning.
I suspect a locked room murder is going to happen soon, knowing the genre. Either that or some other crime.
Considering Fate/ was an eroge-based thing initially, these sex jokesā€¦thereā€™s probably plenty of them out there.
Well, it seems this series only makes sense in that non-Detective Conan way, i.e. you want to know how it all comes together and canā€™t necessarily figure it out for yourself until you know how the magic works. Iā€™m randomly going to guess this is more Jupiter-based stuff and call it a day on that front.
Seriously, I never got what was up with nightgowns (or just pyjamas in general) having hats. You donā€™t need protection for your head at nightā€¦thatā€™s what pillows are for, yeah? (The only reason I see a hat-like thing working with nightwear is a onesie and thatā€™s meant to be part of the inherent appeal of the thing.)
Waver 5
I feel like Adashino is meant to be an Irene Adler-type figureā€¦
ā€œPeaceful Fairysā€ (sic)
Where did Kairiā€™s scar come fromā€¦?
The Black Dog was in Mahoutsukai no Yome as well, but this one looks a lot less inviting, huh?
It seems, like the name Rail Zeppelin implies (as ā€œDemon Eyes Collection Trainā€), most of the people involved in this case have Magic Eyes (or whatever theyā€™re actually called). I wouldnā€™t be surprised if Kairi had them as well, considering heā€™s wearing dark glasses in the middle of a thunderstorm.
ā€œKing Arthur is a dude, right?ā€ - *laughs madly* They finally managed to parody their own bulls***! (Well, Iā€™m not counting Carnival Phantasm or whatever else because this is the first time they threw a meta joke in there in the whole of this project, as far as I can remember.) Ā
Trimmau seems to be the maidā€™s nameā€¦huh. They never mentioned that earlier, I donā€™t think.
So whatā€™s the difference between Fairy Eyes and Mystic Eyes?
Wait, does that even workā€¦? The entire house is the murder weapon? Thatā€™s basically breaking the ā€œsecret passagewayā€ thing on a larger scale.
So whatā€™s Trevorā€™s motiveā€¦?
The dogs running towards the Workshop reminded me of the Hunger Games for some reasonā€¦must be the climax.
That fairy isnā€™t emoting muchā€¦
Oh cra-Wills is going to sacrifice himself, like Adashino was going to do! Thatā€™s the second time Iā€™ve seen that in 2 days (the first was in the Hypnosis Mic manga about the Dirty Dawg).
Uhā€¦Waverā€™s not particularly fit or fast, is heā€¦?
Can you be paid for your case if your client is essentially deadā€¦?
Adra? I read around and Adra seems to be a way to spell the location (or whatever it is) in the first caseā€¦which got adapted into a stage play, but not an anime. Thatā€™s probably what heā€™s (Waver) referring to.
Notably, the title is translated to ā€œlanceā€ but yari means spearā€¦
Waver 6
I seriously wanna slap that pink-haired girlā€¦Update: Her name is Yvette.
This is basically Gray fanserviceā€¦
If Gray = Saber and Saber =King Arthurā€¦hmmā€¦does it count as a girlā€™s party?
Homeland? Since Britain is Saberā€™s (aka Grayā€™s) home country, I think they meant ā€œhometownā€ā€¦Iā€™d hav to listen to the Japanese to make sure, though.
I still think Waver is a stupid, or at the very least false, name for a boy, especially if he did come from Britain. Thatā€™s basically my one limitation on him as a husbando.
The red bit of the eyecatch was shapd like an eyeā€¦it did catch eyes in a sense, after all.
So Trimmau is sustained by magic.
Locked-roomā€¦or rather, bounded fieldā€¦mystery time!
Luvia did mention wrestling in another episodeā€¦
I had to google that, but the Separation Castle is from the Adra case mentioned in episode 5. No wonder I donā€™t remember itā€¦
ā€œAre you suggesting there were faultsā€¦ā€ (from Luvia) - Ooh, I was thinking the perpetrator was caught inside their own bounded field or maybe it was an outsider, but that works too, Reines.
Add calld Luvia out for her extravagance, LOL.
Catch-as-catch-can appears to be ā€œno-holds-barred fightingā€, particularly wrestling.
That case was both informative and possibly solveable by the audience. Both good qualities for a mystery.
If you summon the spirit again, is it the same Rider with the same memories? Or can you summon a different version of the same Rider with amnesia, much like Rin did with Archer? Update: Oh yeah, I did read this on the wiki at one point but then forgot about it. The next episode (7) confirms that Rider wouldnā€™t remember Waver if he were summoned again.
Waver 7
ā€¦Cā€™mon, admit it, show. The glasses are not only there for plot reasons but to up Waverā€™s status as megane boy for the rest of this case. Not that I mind ā€“ I actually really like megane boys, but Iā€™m nowhere near the love of Meganebu ā€“ but in the case of plausibility, I wanna poke holes into it.
Auction for which Mystic Eyes nowā€¦?
Thereā€™s a guyā€¦with an elephant headā€¦I know I shouldnā€™t be bugged by it, but I need the MST3K mantra right now.
This is gonna be a Murder on the Orient Express thing, isnā€™t it? All cases set on trains seem to take cues or make homage to it. (I may not be that proficient on Christie in comparison to Holmes, since Holmes was Conanā€™s inspiration, but Murder on the Orient Express I have read and I did secure an anthology of 4 Christie novels at one point specifically so that I could improve in this area.)
The main series never explained the bad blood between the Church and the Tower, did theyā€¦?
*sweatdrop* Let me guessā€¦when Yvette mentions ā€œmultiplayā€, she means a threesome, right?
How do anime people see out of those blindfold thing, anyway??? (Or is it that Leandra has Mystic Eyes that were sold off or otherwise tampered with?)
I believe the word is ā€œpalateā€, Kairi (or subbers).
Anime characters being bagworms with their blankets is always appealing, no matter the gender. Itā€™s funny and/or relatable, after all.
Does Gray get motion sicknessā€¦? Update: Seems I spoke about a minute too soon. She does.
Waver 8
How does Waver know that Adashino got the documents about the train? Is it because she was in all those places at all those times and he connected the dots?
This lady has heterochromia. Specifically, one is brown and the other is blue or green.
Hmm? I thought the character design was familiar for this. As it turns out, Jun Nakai (who did the character design for this) also did Gateā€™s, which explains it.
Dionysus is the Greek god of wine, IIRC. Hephaestion is, as (s)he explained, the confidante of Alexander the Great (had to google this one).
Itā€™s hard to see before the brightly-lit scene where Olga reappears, but as shown, Waver seems to have cut off part of his forelocks on the left side.
Whatā€™s an Odo???...ooh, fanserviceā€¦*ogles*
The summoning of Hephaestion and Trishaā€™s murder may or may not be relatedā€¦we just donā€™t know how, yet.
I think a Detective Conan Murder on the Orient Express-style mystery would be a good video ga-*googles* Thereā€™s at least one of them out there already (albeit only in Japan)...namely, this one. Spoke too soon.
Oh yeahā€¦this is Olgaā€™s new room, isnā€™t it? I almost forgot about that.
Update: I think this look at the Adra Separation Castle case is interesting. Itā€™s similar to posts I would write, but done by a professional ā€“ namely Richard Eisenbeis of Kotaku and Anime News Network.
Waver 9
So if thereā€™s a Servantā€¦you have to find the Master.
Olga reminds me of Reinesā€¦kind of.
LOL, whoever thought of a zombie cooking showā€¦?
This series really goes all-in on the zombies and the fake-outs thereof, huh? Dangit, Melvin, donā€™t scare us.
Melvin has a really odd relationship with Waver, huh? If youā€™re really insisting youā€™re ā€œthe only person to ever be able to hurt Waverā€, I donā€™t quite see how you guys can be friends in the normal sense of the word.
Why would someone have a violin at a time like thisā€¦?
Interestingly, they donā€™t bother to do any fanservice of Caules. That scene with Gray and Yvette was fanservice for those who like them, but the only guy whoā€™s getting to do any fanservice in this series is Waver himselfā€¦(what with him being naked and knocked out right now.)
ā€œSibylā€ seems to be a synonym for ā€œvirginā€ā€¦(*whispers ā€œAwkwardā€¦ā€*)
Update: After reading some of Marthā€™s posts on this series, Iā€™m inclined to call this ā€œMurders on a Train (with an Exploding Helicopter for Good Measure)ā€.
Waver 10
For some reason, thereā€™s episode 0 ā€“ 9, then 11 ā€“ 13 on the service Iā€™m using. Whereā€™s 10?
I think Waverā€™s relationship with Rider is interesting because of the way I think of relationships myself. Waver has made it clear that he wants to see Rider again so he can basically prostrate at his feet all over again (and maybe win a wish and/or see Oceanus while theyā€™re at it), but ā€“ hey, hear this! - I used to believe, when I was still an impressionable kid, all relationships, whether they be between friends, family or even lovers, lasted roughly in the same state basically forever (as in, friends stay friends forever, theyā€™ll never be so far apart that they canā€™t kep their relationship alive etc. etc.)ā€¦Obviously, I was wrong and arguably, this change in thinking, plus the related changes in technology, are where my ability to fleetingly but passionate love both 2D boys and the series they come from comes from.
Wait, so the Child of Einasshe (sp?) is the forest, yeah? I donā€™t think I got that 100% straight.
I never thought the shield form of a Mystic Code could be used for snowboarding down a mountain/hillā€¦whatever Gray just went down. I didnā€™t even know Add had a shield form, for that matter.
ā€œ[U]sual individualā€ ā€“ LOL. What a way to refer to Waver.
ā€œWait a minute!ā€ ā€“ Iā€™m just imagining Phoenix Wright all of a sudden. A Waver legal mystery series would be boring as all get out ā€“ Iā€™m far less interested in the courtroom versions of mysteries and more interested in how the pieces fit together. (Update: Then again, I am a person who likes the action genre and courtroom mysteries donā€™t have much of that, which might also explain my choice.)
ā€œā€¦lacking the element of motive to begin with.ā€ ā€“ Well, Waverā€™s not wrongā€¦
Iā€™m observing this apple and noticing someone skimped on the detail around the stem. Does anyone still remember Art Academy for the DS? After looking at some promo material for it, I basically learnt how to draw a proper apple (and nothing else, really). If an apple is just drawn as a circle, it doesnā€™t quite look like an apple up close. (Two of the main things I screw up on when drawing are perception and the colour of highlights, both of which are covered in something like an apple stem and the related indent.)
Oh goodnessā€¦I was hoping Karabo would keep his vision (or actual eyeballs)ā€¦but thatā€™s gruesome.
Iā€™m guessing, based on the wheelchair, that Waverā€™s still paralysed or otherwise not able to move around like normal. Update: Spoke too soon.
Someone encoded the video funny againā€¦
Waver 11
What was that crossword thingā€¦? A warding spell of some sort?
Is that an owl in the back?!
Stealth fighterā€¦Rider wanted on, didnā€™t he?
Every time he appears on screen now, I basically curse Melvin. Heā€™s entertaining to watch, sure, but heā€™s annoyingly prodigal (= wasteful). Heā€™s basically Dice from HypMic at this stage (aka heā€™s the sort of person whoā€™d bet away his own clothes, given the chance and incentive).
Look at the way Waverā€™s hair drags behind him as he walksā€¦itā€™s gorgeousā€¦
ā€œResidual Imageā€ (as translated in the title) is literally ā€œthe left-over imageā€ (zanzou). Not surprising, but I find the exact combo of characters used interesting since it could be short for ā€œnokoru eizouā€ (where the nokoruā€™s character is read as zan in the combo, as you can guess). Ā  Ā
Waver 12
Wowā€¦this series really pulled something out of its butt this time, huh? ā€œThe guy without a heartā€ā€¦no viewer wouldā€™ve known that actually referred to a character called Dr Heartless unless they knew of his existence somehow (the closest they wouldā€™ve been was having an inkling that this pointed to a name of the culprit).
There is an owl in the back of the auction room!
Ay? So what the heck is Pandemonium in this case?
ā€œdotardā€ ā€“ Turns out this means ā€œan old person, especially one who has become physically weak or whose mental faculties have declined.ā€ You canā€™t say I donā€™t enrich my vocbulary through watching anime, huh?
Iā€™m still wonderingā€¦why adapt case 7 of this series (Rail Zeppelin)? Why not case 1 (Adra)? Update: I donā€™t know where I pulled the number 7 from, since this is volume 4 ā€“ 5 of the series. Apparently some of the cases were anime-original though.
Waver 13 (FINAL)
Oh, Flat, you stupidā€¦
Waverā€™s exasperated faces are great. No wonder Reines likes to toy with himā€¦
I can assume Rail Zeppelin is a Ghost Liner, yes?
Can I guess that Adashino ~likes~ Waverā€¦? Update: Turns out thatā€™s not quite the case.
Ooh, Waver without his shirt is se-okay, Iā€™m getting distracted. Seriously though, Waver never showed his Crest in F/Z. I never even knew what it looked like until now! The fact itā€™s such a simple design in comparison to his Command Seals isā€¦kinda underwhelming, really.
I think thereā€™s a bit of a pattern between Jakurai (from HypMic) and Waverā€¦namely, they suck when it comes to drinking. (Also, of course, the long hair. Donā€™t forget it, never forget it.)
Shut up, Add!
For some reason, I felt like a lot of that last part, while getting closure for Waver, it almost had connotations of ā€œIā€™ll meet you on the other side, Riderā€ā€¦so it felt kind of sad, to be honest. That talk between Reines and Olga I donā€™t think Iā€™d understand without Apocrypha and Grand Order, but I guess thatā€™s to be expected in such a huge franchise. Anyways, moving right along!
Illya 1
Iā€™ve been a bit worried about what Iā€™ll have to subject myself to for the sake of Magical Girlsā€¦
Was thatā€¦Taiga?
Whoā€™s Lizā€¦?
Okusama, huh? (Okusama = someoneā€™s wife, although it seems to be used in the plural here since I donā€™t think Kiritsugu and/or Iri are dead in this timeline.)
The subs Iā€™ve got say Shiro is adopted here too (when itā€™s not in the Japanese), although I wonder exactly how much of UBW is going to be true in this animeā€¦
Hmmā€¦a bit of digging reveals Luviaā€™s not a Master. So throwing out Lancer is really just a joke on how Lancer gets roasted early on in Grail Wars, right?
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhā€¦squick, muchā€¦(Thank goodness the source I was using edited out the loli fanservice, so I can tolerate this series a lot moreā€¦but still, suggesting you have a romance with your step-brother, even if itā€™s known youā€™re not related from the beginning, isā€¦you already know my feelings on that, based on my reaction. Shiro is, what, 15? About twice Illyaā€™s age!) Update: Okay, so he has no confirmed age in Prisma Illya, but heā€™s 17 in F/SN so Iā€™d assum the same or similar, seeing as he attends the same school. Itā€™s fine if itā€™s platonic, but this is clearly an Onii-chan, daisuki! thing the likes of which Oreimo throws down! Thank you for calling it out though, Ruby.
Oh my gosh, this looks like the Rhongomynaid (Detective Waver) and Excalibur (or whatever Saberā€™s Noble Phantasm is called) summoning beam! LOL!
Ruby, you lech! Donā€™t go praising the angles! *shakes fist* (Seriously, what if magical girl mascots were paedophilesā€¦? *blank face* Welp, considering whatā€™s out there on the internet, I wouldnā€™t be surprised if a hentai or something had such a concept.)
Hmm? Turns out the word for Servant means something like ā€œcelestial heroā€. Makes sense.
Nice callback to Saber and Shiro!
Illya 2
I thought Illya would say that her parents are deadā€¦turns out the showā€™s not that grimdark (to the point where it wouldnā€™t set the show after Kiritsugu and Iriā€™s deaths), huh?
Do the sticks have a gender? The subs said ā€œsheā€ for Rubyā€¦
LOL, itā€™s Rider. I thought Lancer was gonna get his butt kicked all over again (thinking more along the lines of CCS).
Itā€™s Gay Bul-I mean, Gae Bolg! (Iā€™ve been reading TV Tropes againā€¦can you tell?)
This episode was pretty pedestrian. I like it more than the first one.
Whatā€™s up with the CGIā€¦?
Oh! Bunbun, who does Yuki Yuna! Update: They only did the illustrations for some of the series. They also did SAO illustrations, although thatā€™s of less significance to me.
Illya 3
The sticks do have genders!!! Thatā€™s like claiming Jesus for kakera with Mudae! (Yes, thatā€™s possible. I got him in one server.)
The power of fujoshiā€¦is amazing! How did it get to a girl whoā€™s so young?!
These angles are a bit disturbingā€¦
ā€œCasaoā€, LOL.
Magical girl nakama, huh?
Illya 4
MST3K mantra!
Whose quote is that againā€¦? ā€œDonā€™t think, imagineā€? Update: It turns out to not be anyoneā€™s quote at all, if Google results are to be believed.
Uh-oh! Saber Alter!
Illya 5
Padding the episode alreadyā€¦?
The mist is a quality of a Berserker, right?
Geez the angles piss me offā€¦
These sticks have brains???
Can you call it teamwork if theyā€™re always complaining about each other?
Illya 6
More paddingā€¦
Illyaā€™s UBW!
Geesh, that last-minute shot of Rin and Luvia popping out of the ground scared me for a bitā€¦
Illya 7
*sigh* Itā€™s the sick episodeā€¦
I recognise the vacuum cleaner. I have the same one at home.
*sigh* Random fanservice of elementary school girls. This is what gives anime a bad name.
*Sapphire pulls out a USB port* - Ohhkay, is that stick fanservice, in a senseā€¦? Because thatā€™s awkward too.
Maids went out of fashion years agoā€¦
ā€œLyrical Radical Genocideā€ - I think this Lyrical Radical things is parodying Nanoha.
Based on the cloak, itā€™s an Assassin.
ā€œListen, if you arenā€™t careful, youā€™ll die!ā€ ā€“ Yep, because people die when they are killed. I almost missed that meme for a bit.
Illya 8
Illyaā€™s still reeling from Miyuā€™s talk, huh?
I noticed it said tomoda(chi) in the background at one point.
Does Miyu exist in any of the alternate universes?
Ah, thereā€™s yuujou (friendship) in the background as calligraphy.
I think the video got encoded funny againā€¦
Geez, complaining about boobs? The series got worseā€¦oh, I forgot Shiro was around in this series.
ā€¦whoā€™s left? Thereā€™s been Saber, Archer, Lancer, Assassin, Rider, Caster andā€¦who? Berserker, thatā€™s who.
Illya 9
Ohhhhhhhh brother, not more bath scenesā€¦
Iri looks almost exactly like she does in the Eiznbern Consultation Rooms! (I found those around and watched them today.)
Thank goodness the fanservice is censoredā€¦
I never realised Berseker had heterochromia until nowā€¦
One thing that I assume makes Saberā€™s outfit look nice to thos that like girls is the window in the topā€¦but it goes to waste on Miyu, LOL.
I find it interesting Illya has all these concerns ā€“ the ones (or similar ones) Iri harbourd in F/Z.
Hey, the bridge! This is the bridge where Rider dies inn F/Z, yeah?
The ED looks different this timeā€¦ Ā
Illya 10 (FINAL)
E-Eepā€¦loli fanserviceā€¦
Now Miyu is basically what Waver is to Rider, no doubt about it.
Bulls***! Speak of the devil! I was wondering what Waver looked like in the Illya style, because I read on the wiki he makes a cameo in season 2, andā€¦here he is. Didnā€™t expect him in season 1, though.
Another new ED animation. I find it interesting theyā€™ve never once had to recast any VAs throughout the entire existence of Fate/ animeā€¦not that I know of, anyway.
Hiroyama Hiroshi is the original Illya creator.
Okay, thatā€™s the end of one season. I feel kind of fatigued since I finished the Eiznbern Consultation Rooms today as well, so Iā€™m going to take a break from watching more Illya until itā€™s necessary to watch again in a few postsā€™ time.
Now that theyā€™ve collected the cards, Iā€™m wondering what the series intends to do nextā€¦
Illya s2 Pt 1 Ep 1
They clearly skimped on the budget when Shiro was leaving the houseā€¦
I keep forgetting Illya is meant to be Germanā€¦
That bad Englishā€¦is actually there in the ep. titleā€¦
Oh greatā€¦schoolgirls talking about erotic swimsuitsā€¦
This s*** is what you call ā€œClass-Sā€! I have no interest in it, because I donā€™t swing that way! (Sorry, yuri fansā€¦)
The problem with series that arenā€™t 100% made with you in mind is that your favourite characters might look uglyā€¦thatā€™s especially the case with En, Jakurai and Waver.
Ryudou Temple, eh? Letā€™s hope Assassin still looks good.
I donā€™t think Iā€™ve seen that beforeā€¦namely, being able to hear whatā€™s going on outside the transformation while itā€™s happening.
Now this 2 Illyas thingā€¦this is new, alright.
Illya s2 Pt 1 Ep 2
LOL, what a horoscope.
Truck-kun! I donā€™t think Illya would make a good isekai protag, come to think of it.
Who is this nurse? I feel like sheā€™s from some other part of the Nasuverseā€¦ Update: My guess was right. Thatā€™s Caren Hortensia, protagonist of Fate/hollow ataraxia and Kireiā€™sā€¦uh, daughter. I know he had a wife. We never met said wife, but seeing the daughter really drove that fact home. Ā
Uhhhhhhhhā€¦okay, now the lesbian loli scene just made things go off a cliff for me. Iā€™m not against lesbians or yuri ā€“ to each their own ā€“ but that scene was clearly meant to be pleasing to a certain audience.
How does anyone kill anything gentlyā€¦?
Ohhhhhhkay, strike 2 for loli fanservice.
I seem to rememberā€¦thatā€™s right, Alice from the [something] no Kuni no Alice series was evaluated on her coffee-making skills (by Julius, I think it was). Thatā€™s why Iā€™m thinking of Alice when I see Luvia praising Miyu on something similar.
Wa-hey! Itā€™s Rinā€™s Azoth dagger!
Well, the mechanics of the transformation are also something you have to think about. Iā€™ll give the show kudos for that. Ā
Illya s2 Pt 1 Ep 3
Can we not with the whole ā€œOnii-chan, daisuki!ā€ thing?! Thatā€™s it! Thatā€™s the last straw! Iā€™m finishing this episode and aborting early so that I can preserve my dignityā€¦and get some proper sleep for once.
The fact Miyu thinks Shiro resembles her brother must not be a coincidenceā€¦(Iā€™ve become far too Fate/ savvy, havenā€™t I?) Update: It seems I was right. Apparently, Miyu was taken in by Kiritsugu in a certain universe, but apparently this is a bunch of spoilers.
Genki na aisatsu was in the back.
This is just getting worse and worseā€¦
So now Kuroā€™s name is Kuroe (Chloe), huh? Anyways, good riddance, loli fanservice! So long! I wonā€™t miss you one bit!

Weekend Top Ten #373
Top Ten Thoughts on Avengers: Endgame
Spoilers ahoy!
Itā€™s the end of an era as Avengers: Endgame is finally upon us. As I write this, Iā€™m less than 24 hours out of the cinema and itā€™s still all percolating within my brain. This Top Ten, then, will be an almost stream-of-consciousness outpouring of my joy, sadness, and occasional twinge of disappointment at what is unquestionably a phenomenal end to the Infinity Saga, a satisfying sequel to Infinity War, and a whole lot of fan-service.
Like I said: SPOILERS AHOY.
ā€œFive Years Laterā€: it was a long film. Three hours long. but crucially, it does not feel three hours. It feels big, weighty, epic, but it does not feel long. to say itā€™s considerably longer than the previous Avengers movies, it just flies by. In this way, itā€™s similar to the Lord of the Rings movies; breadth and depth but still a lot of pace.
ā€œMove onā€: the five-year time-jump was a little bit of a surprise (I didnā€™t think it would be quite that long), but it helped sell a universe torn apart by the aftermath of The Snap. What I was not expecting was for them to live with it. Okay, so the departed people came back, but wonā€™t that cause its own problems? This is not the world we entered in 2008 when Tony Stark was blown up in the desert; itā€™s not even the world we left in 2012 after a stunted alien invasion of New York. Some people will have tried to move on, perhaps forging new relationships, just to find their old lovers returned. Younger siblings will suddenly become older siblings. People will have lost jobs and houses. Itā€™s rather fortunate that, from the looks of things, Peter Parkerā€™s entire class was snapped out of existence and then returned, otherwise heā€™d be a lot younger than his co-stars in Far From Home. Anyway, not just undoing the time-jump was a brave decision and sets the stage for some potentially interesting stories going forward.
ā€œIt has to be meā€: I went in expecting deaths, and I was surprised. I was expecting a bloodbath, and it was actually relatively muted. I was surprised that Vision didnā€™t get resurrected, less surprised that Gamora (sort of) did, astounded that Nebula survived, and blindsided by Black Widow. I donā€™t think itā€™s just because sheā€™s got her own movie out next year, but I honestly thought Black Widow would become the lynchpin of a post-Captain America Avengers team. Hey, who knows? Maybe she willā€¦
ā€œI really tried to bring her backā€: this is actually my mumā€™s theory (sheā€™s a big Avengers fan), but what if Bruce was successful? When he snapped his fingers, he wanted to resurrect Natasha, but claims he was unsuccessful. What if heā€™s wrong, and she is back, somehow? Perhaps compromised, perhaps changed? Maybe her solo film will be about bringing her back to the light.
ā€œI knew it!ā€: I was practically crying with giddy joy when Cap lifted Mjolnir. The fact that Thor had expected it, and was actually pleased by it, was just delightful. But Capā€™s fight with Thanos, armed with both his shield and Thorā€™s hammer, was just a fantastic piece of fan-servicing fantasy cinema. I kinda wished theyā€™d gone whole hog and given him his own Iron Man armour to boot.
ā€œYour majestyā€: Thorā€™s development in this film was interesting, as he was almost used as comic relief. His depression made total sense given not only that he blamed himself for not stopping Thanos in time, but also the scale of the loss heā€™d suffered prior to, and during, Infinity War. All the same, it was a bit of shame to see the character heā€™d developed in Ragnarok rolled back a little bit, even if it does set him up for some nice solo adventures down the line (perhaps heā€™ll feature in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and I really hope Taika Waititi gets to make another Thor solo movie too). But considering how Loki stole the show in the first Thor and Avengers movies, and how The Dark World and Age of Ultron were a little disappointing (in different ways) in regard to the God of Thunder, the strength of Thorā€™s story arc and whatā€™s being asked of Chris Hemsworth in the role is a huge improvement and bodes well for the future.
ā€œI am Iron Manā€: if Iā€™d put money down, Iā€™d have said Cap dies for-real in the film, but Tony gets his own stand-alone Logan-esque swansong. That was not to be; Cap survives, sorta, and Tony really does make the sacrifice play and die saving the world. Whilst Iā€™m disappointed he didnā€™t get to say goodbye on his own terms, as far as last stands go, that was phenomenal. A great call-back to one of the most famous moments in the MCU, a brilliant use of his OP armourā€™s capabilities, and just a really cool image. Totally Tony, totally Avengers, totally the end. Sob.
ā€œYou gonna tell me about her?ā€ Steve Rogers totally deserved his happy ending, and if he hadnā€™t somehow ended up with Peggy Carter, then Iā€™d have been a little bit disappointed. But I just donā€™t buy that Captain America would choose to retire. Did he get stuck in the past? Did he decide to fight crime in the 40s and 50s? And if so, did he try to do anything about Bucky or Hydra? Or did he know that that future was his past and so, as Bruce and Nebula explained, he was powerless to change it? Regardless, the fact that what we saw in the film was, essentially, Cap quitting, it left a slightly sour taste in the mouth, even though him handing the shield to Sam was a triumphant passing of the torch. Oh, and one more thought on this topic: in the Russo brothersā€™ first film for Marvel (The Winter Soldier), Peggy says something about how Steve was even instrumental in introducing her to her husband (I paraphrase); I wonder if, even back then, the endgame (ho ho) for Cap was always going to be ā€œgo back in time and marry Peggyā€?
ā€œThat really is Americaā€™s assā€: letā€™s not get too mired in the mud here, despite my ā€œCap donā€™t quit!ā€ niggles. Because as big and epic and tragic as the film was, it was also hilarious. I really didnā€™t expect it to be quite as funny as it was (Iā€™m not sure why, all the previous Avengers movies have been pretty funny). I was quite pleased at how much humour Captain America was given; his exasperated ā€œI know, I knowā€ when his younger self trotted out the ā€œI can do this all day lineā€ was another delight.
ā€œAssembleā€: just like Cap wielding Mjolnir, thereā€™s a certain geeky thrill just to hear him say those words. But the army of Avengers emerging from Strangeā€™s portals was a phenomenal sight to behold, and itā€™s really exciting to see where the MCU goes from here. Captain Marvel has essentially declared her domain to be space; likewise, Thor is off with the Guardians for the time being; Black Panther is busy being King of Wakanda; Iron Man and Black Widow are dead. So who do we have, the next time the Avengers need to Assemble? Sam Wilsonā€™s Captain America; the Scarlet Witch; Spider-Man; And-Man and the Wasp; The Winter Soldier, maybe; I guess Doctor Strange; perhaps Valkyrie? And then save the big guns for when theyā€™re needed? Anyway, itā€™s just fun speculating at this stage.
Okay, there we are, ten thoughts off the top of my head. Itā€™s funny sometimes that a movie can be so bloody good but the thing that sticks is the niggles (like, where was Lady Sif at the end?! And I feel bad that they couldnā€™t find room for Paul Bettany just so he could get a lovely little pictorial send-off in the credits). Itā€™s such an achievement, the likes of which I donā€™t think weā€™ve seen before and I wonder if weā€™ll see again. Just in the same way that Avengers united several heroes whoā€™d (mostly) starred in their own movies, and we got to see them join up and interact in a way that cinema hadnā€™t shown before, Endgame gives us an epic series finale of a film, one that is dependent upon the 21 films that came before it and the hours and hours of character development devoted to its stars. Where do they go from here? Which heroes get their sequels, which new heroes do they recruit? Will we ever see more of Steve Rogers? Will a new generation ā€“ Squirrel Girl, Ms. Marvel, Ironheart ā€“ take centre stage? What will be the over-arching connective tissue that, in ten yearsā€™ time, leads to another epoch-shattering Avengers smackdown? And how ā€“ how, how, how ā€“ do they incorporate Deadpool, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men?! Iā€™ve no idea (well, Iā€™ve got lots of ideas but theyā€™re probably wrong) ā€“ but itā€™ll sure be fun finding out.
Oh, and thereā€™s still no sign of Deathā€™s Head.

Riverdale Season 5 Episode 3 Review ā€“ Chapter 79: Graduation
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
This RIVERDALE review contains spoilers.
Riverdale Season 5 Episode 3
ā€œAre we doomed to just be haunted by this town for the rest of our lives?ā€
So asks Jughead Jones in this most emotional episode of Riverdale, and itā€™s a question that is uttered almost rhetorically even though we all know the answer. Thereā€™s a valedictorian feel to this installment in every sense, one that subtextually speaks of how the series is closing the door on what is what in order to reinvent itself. And friends, itā€™s arguably the most grounded episode the show has ever doneā€¦and maybe the best?
Iā€™ve mentioned previously how weird it is whenever Riverdale focuses on aspects of normal teenage life. High school has never been a huge part of the program, so graduation feels like an necessary obstacle that must be hurdled in order to get these characters into their respective futures. Realizing this, episode writer (and show co-creator) Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has crafted a graceful farewell to Riverdale High that is more about dealing with the consequences of the past than graduation itself.
Always the best speechmaker on the show, Bettyā€™s succinct graduation address acknowledges how easy it is for innocence to slip away. ā€œStay young for as long as possible, even if itā€™s only for one more moment,ā€ she sincerely states, gravely aware of how the mayhem inflicted by the Black Hood, the Gargoyle King, Jingle Jangle, and all of Riverdaleā€™s ills have fractured the psyches of the next generation.
It is an issue the Cooper family has dealt with repeatedly, and was even doing so while Betty was speaking to the community and her peers. For the impact of Riverdale life has again hit home, this time by Jellybeanā€™s actions as The Auteur. In an attempt to save Jellybean before she is consumed by her demons, F.P. decides to take her back to Toledo ā€” back to Gladys and something resembling a normal life.
The collateral damage is massive. Alice loses her partner, Jellybean loses her brother, the town loses the best sheriff it has ever had. (F.P. demanding that Hiram Lodge reinstall Tom Keller as sheriff is the sort of delightful contrivance that only this series can get away with).
Time and again on Riverdale weā€™ve heard characters give speeches that the town residents must ā€œdo better.ā€ Now that there are proven examples of how the madness of the town is impacting its youngest citizens, will anything change? Narratively, itā€™s doubtful. And a ā€œnormalā€ Riverdale would be a hell of a dull place.
But what feels revolutionary here is that this episode is excellent while still being rooted firmly in reality. Riverdale can still be compelling by just focusing on the friendships that bind these characters without relying on narrative gimmicks. This may break the show, but it could also rebirth it.
That said, I still want zombies.
This episode was originally intended to be last yearā€™s season finale before Covid-19 halted production. In many ways though it feels like a series wrap up. As the credits roll we have all of the characters separated. Archie has decided to the join the Army, with Betty, Veronica and Jughead away and estranged at their respective colleges. Cheryl remains in Riverdale, determined to rehabilitate the Blossom family image while her beloved Toni is away at school.
Jughead tells us as the episode concludes that the gang will be brought back together by a new mystery six years later. We donā€™t as of yet know what that is, and the anticipation is exhilarating. Bring on next week!

Riverdale Rundown
ā€¢ The baseball card included in the time capsule from the Class of 1945 was for Ambrose ā€œRocketā€ Pipps, which was the name of a minor character who primarily appeared in Bob Bollingā€™s melancholy Little Archie comics. (He was an outsider who Archie would regularly bully, often brutally so). The character also made an appearance in the Life with Archie: The Married Life series, this time as a business partner of Archieā€™s.
ā€¢ Riverdale has been renewed for a sixth season, so we can expect this showā€™s craziness to go on indefinitely.
ā€¢ Penelope Blossom skulking about in the bushes after graduation was a hilarious bit of business. And by her turning herself in to the authorities, she should be out in about six yearsā€¦which is also the length of the time jump the show is about to go through.
ā€¢ After all that these characters have gone through, is a kiss that really didnā€™t mean anything between Archie and Betty that big of a deal?
ā€¢ What will Mr. Lodge do now? And, more importantly, does anyone really care?
ā€¢ This episode was full of emotional gut punches, with my three favorites being the Fred flashback, F.P. and Aliceā€™s farewell, and the beautifully orchestrated farewell between Archie and his friends on the side of the road.
ā€¢ Archieā€™s suggestion that he and his friends all meet up at Popā€™s one year after graduation had big Wet Hot American Summer vibes. Maybe no one but Jug showed up because everyone else was too busy fondling their sweaters?
ā€¢ In the episodeā€™s biggest dick move, Mr. Weatherbee tells Archie he has to repeat his senior year then immediately asks for a favor ā€” having him sing at graduation. Speaking of this, it made me feel like a fossil to realize that Archie and the gang probably think of ā€œGood Riddance (Time of Your Life)ā€ as an oldie.
ā€¢ Speaking of which, I openly giggled when Archie started singing Green Day. Given the charactersā€™ comic book longevity I thought that Alphavilleā€™s ā€œForever Youngā€ would have been a better choice, albeit a tad on the nose.
ā€¢ ā€œMaybe a little normal high school angst is good for us,ā€ says Jughead, moments before a little normal high school angst rips he and his friends apart.
ā€¢ Mr. Weatherbee is sporting a glove on his right hand as a result of losing a few fingers during his escape from The Farm.
ā€¢ While the fate of the core four is largely uncertain, we do know from his appearance in the future-set Katy Keene that Kevin Keller goes on to become the drama teacher at Riverdale High. It would have been nice though for the show to take a moment to address his (and Reggieā€™s for that matter) future plans.
ā€¢ Pop Tate once again has ownership of the Chokā€™lit Shoppe. Expect this plotpoint to play a big role in the rest of this season.
ā€¢ The name of the four Riverdale High students who went off to war (and who haunt Archie throughout this episode) are Carl Callahan, Walt ā€œWildcatā€ Wright, Ab Ackerman, and Gordy Greene. Iā€™m guessing these are super deep cut Archie/pop culture references that even I donā€™t know. If you recognize their significance, let us know.
ā€¢ Cheryl pulls a The Red Circle comic out of the vintage time capsule, this is a reference to the super heroes whose publisher, MLJ, later became Archie Comics.
ā€¢ Will Jughead now be hatless in future episodes of Riverdale? If so, Iā€™m going to be VERY upset.
ā€¢ Kevin including Josieā€™s cat ears in the new time capsule is a fantastic tribute to his step sister, and a character whose fate in the TV Archieverse is unknown following the cancellation of Katy Keene.
ā€¢ It was great to hear Penelope call Cheryl (dressed in red for graduation, obviously) ā€œnightmare childā€ once again.
ā€¢ While effective, Bettyā€™s commencement speech was easily the shortest in television history.
ā€¢ The fact that there are Serpents in seemingly every major city will never not be hilarious to me.
ā€¢ Itā€™s nice to see that Vegas is alive and well. This dog has been so neglected on the series that I expect him to turn up on one of those Sarah McLachlan commercials.
ā€¢ Jugheadā€™s narration of the gang drifting apart following graduation was clearly inspired by the end of Stand By Me. (God knows these kids have seen enough dead bodies in their day).
ā€¢ Hermione Lodge spending a summer in the Hamptons with Andy Cohen and starring on The Real Housewives of New York City? Chefā€™s kiss.
ā€¢ Next week: The fifth season of Riverdale gets properly underway, and I for one canā€™t wait to see what happens next.
