Life update ramble mostly to get my thoughts together.
I don’t think most people in my life genuinely know how sick I am... Its making me end up second guessing myself/self-gaslighting like “maybe I’m not that sick..?” or I’m somehow being over dramatic. But I’ve had several actually disabled people reassure me that I’m not crazy and this is pretty normal for ppl with chronic pain. I have head pain literally every day at some level now but I’m at max amount of meds I can take outside of starting botox as well which I really don’t want to do with my nerves already so screwy. At this point I’ve just normalized it and work around it. I’m really tired though. Thats the thing I think most people don’t get is just how much this shit takes out of you. I did not understand it. I had an educated guess being around my sister but I was not prepared to be put on my ass so much and not be able to just charge through to do things I used to anymore. It sucks and I’m trying to work through understanding it and giving myself grace. But I’m very harsh on myself by nature, so its not the easiest thing to do. On top of people not understanding the depth of how out of it I am, I feel kinda shit for how flaky I’ve been, but at the same time I need to remind myself that I’m literally not doing anything wrong. My health has to come first even if it makes others feel inconvenienced. My people pleasing side hates this lol
But I’m trying to get better at it. I didn’t officially make any New Years resolutions this year, but I’ve started to shrink my world inward since Jan and focus more on my own physical and mental health. Shutting off the news and purposely trying to focus on mostly positive things. Cutting out negativity has helped a bit cause stress is a big migraine trigger. (any heightened emotion can be, but stress and anger are easiest to tip into starting a headache that leads to a migraine) Simplifying my life to focus on happier things has been good ot my mental health too. I had a lowkey intervention with some ppl helping me realize I was far too focused on other people and their problems rather than investing in myself in a healthy way. I haven’t taken on a therapist again yet, but my last one pointed out that I have a very unkind attitude toward myself and will be far more willing to help others first before seeking help for myself, which when paired with my passive nature, I end up getting taken advantage of even if I don’t see it as that. I know this, but confronting it is awkward. Being selfish to me is buying myself nice things, now it means saying no if I don’t have energy to do something or letting myself rest.
I’ve been trying to figure out new boundaries as well. I have to get better at voicing them though. Saying no is hard and I feel like I need to justify it with a reason instead of it just being an answer. I can’t be sure my decline in health is tied to my lack of selfcare in the mental department but I’m sure it wasn’t helping.
Either way, I am on to trying to be healthier for myself this year. There are a lot of good things I’m trying! I’m investing a lot in trying to get my art stuff up and going again. I’m throwing my hat into new cons around the east coast and haven’t been flat out rejected from any yet, which is pretty uplifting seeing as my portfolio is more sparse than I want it to be. I met a lot of awesome new artists at toracon and I’m hoping to see some more artist friends if I make it into any other cons this year. I’m unapologetically into liking what I like rn. (trying not to think about what ppl think about my over tweeting art for what I like etc) I opened a DBA for my sister and I to do more collab stuff and help her take on bigger projects without it messing up her ssi. We have been brainstorming lots of fun ideas and are looking to turn part of the basement into studio space we can work out of. I’m sketching lots of new ideas for apparel designs and I will hopefully get my webcomic and store going by the summer.
A lot of the good things in the works also hinge on how my physical health is, and I’m hoping to keep that looking better as well. ;w; Once we have more stable weather it should help. I lost about 10-15lbs from sleeping through meals or being too nauseous to eat, but once we have warmer weather I want to do a morning walk and eat something more regularly. I think a more stable schedule will help out too. It just gets thrown out of whack when you have to stay in bed cause moving makes your head throb. ;w;
Writing all this down is cathartic for me in a way. like typing a little plan or update to myself. Even seeing post memories come up from past years like “I have a bad headache” reminds me I’ve been dealing with this longer than even I think I have been and I’m not crazy. This whole thing is discombobulated, but its a snapshot in my life for now.
Reminding myself to rest, that I’m not crazy, that good things are to come~

Ship Life
Hola,
Long time no see.
Cruise life has officially begun now that guests are on board, so finding time to write anything or doing anything other than work has been hard! Being in the dry dock definitely was not the most glamorous experience, but it sure was relaxing and included a lot of down time and time for socializing. Now that we are back in business, things are a lot busier! The first voyage last week left from singapore and went to Penang, Malaysia and Phuket, Thailand. Sadly, I was working during the day on both days and could not get off, hopefully next time. A day at work varies drastically for every department on board. As a youth staff, every day is pretty different. Instead of working 9-5 every day, days are pretty spread out. There is also never a day off for anyone in any department, only hours off. For example- here is my schedule from today. From 9-12 I worked with the 6-11 year olds. From 1:30-3:30 I helped run laser tag. Then tonight I work from 10:00pm-2:00am with the 3-5 year olds (if parents choose to leave their kids). If no kids stay past 10:00, I get to leave too (fingers crossed). The hours of the kids camp on board are 9:00-12:00, 2:00-5:00, 7:00-10:00 and then theres a late night session from 10:00pm-2:00am (7.00/hour for the late session). We also offer a kids lunch and dinner if kids sign up for it. We take them to the buffet during the time the camp is closed and they get pizza and fries and we get to choose from the buffet. I haven’t had to do this yet.Thankfully, no one has left their kids past 10pm yet so i’m really hoping the same is true for my late shift tonight. When there’s a big block of time off in between shifts, people mostly nap. I brought a dvd player that plugs into my laptop, so i’ve mostly been watching Dawson’s Creek during my time off. During the dry dock, they also put in a flat screen tv at the end of every staff’s bed mounted to the wall. Theres about 25 channels. They also have free movies available for crew on the tv and there is honestly a great selection, I was really surprised. Mostly new releases. If you can make it work and have enough time, you can also get off the ship while in port during your hours off. My boss is really great and makes it a priority to make sure that all of us will get to get off at every port. In these Asian ports, all of the really touristy areas are around a 1-2 hour drive away, so it is going to be hard to visit them, but people have made it work.
A lot of people have been asking me about food, so here we go! The staff “mess” is open 3 times a day. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. When it’s closed in between those 3 times, theres no way to get food, so its important to go when its open! We are allowed to go to some of the restaurants on board, but need to make a reservation and pay a small fee. None of us from the youth team have tried this yet, but i’m sure we will try to get a group together to get some real food soon. There is also a little convenience store for staff that has snack food (kind of expensive $$$), this is a very important place. Snacks are necessary for the room when all there is to do is watch tv. However, the only things I can really eat from there are pringles and oreos. Life as a vegan on this ship is proving to be very difficult. For breakfast I’ve been having fruit and hash browns (if I make it in time). For others, there are a lot of eggs in various forms and different meats. Always rice as well. For lunch and dinner I have quite literally been eating the same things in different orders every day. Rice, pasta, broccoli, cauliflower, squash, veggie fajitas (sometimes a salad or quinoa salad if i’m lucky). For other normal people, there are a ton of different options. A LOT of different meats and fish. There is also what seems like 500lbs of rice available at every meal. Usually i’ll make a peanut butter sandwich on a little bun as well. That has been my dessert seeing as I cannot eat any of the desserts, which is really sad because they look amazing and are usually the leftovers from the dining room. I can’t complain because its free, but i’m definitely getting a bit tired of having the same things every day! Speaking of pricing, pretty much everything is free and I am just getting paid to be here. Room and board is free. The main meals are free, but you have to pay for the snacks from the store and if you want to go to a fancy restaurant. Laundry is also free, but is an absolute joke because there are about 4 working machines for over 1,000 people. The only things we have to pay for are our uniforms, alcohol and wifi. However, most drinks are only 2.00. I heard that the bar for the crew makes more money than all of the other bars on board combined, which is crazy because we get such a discount on alcohol, whereas the drinks for guests are extremely overpriced. But, it makes sense because the crew/staff on this ship drink like fish! Paying for wifi is very annoying. I know its a first world problem, but its so necessary to keep in touch with friends and family to stay sane. There are different packages you can buy, but I have only been purchasing the 1 hour of wifi for 3.99. We got some great news though. As a “thank you” for completing the dry dock, they have just gifted us with 1 month of free wifi. It just opened up 5 minutes ago, so I will have free wifi until the end of November. This is so exciting for us.
Biggest thing i’m missing right now: HAVING A WINDOW. When I was at home, I was a legit mushroom who always wanted the blinds closed. However, waking up every morning in the pitch black is starting to get to me. I need some natural light. Luckily, the tv has a live camera of the view from the front of the ship, so sometimes I turn that on and pretend I have a window. I guess I miss my friends and family too, but not as much as a window ;)
** Was just able to get off the ship for a few hours with my friend Stacy in the historic city of Malacca, Malaysia. Pics are on facebook :)
Thats about all I can think of for now, hope everything is well back home!
Please email me to update me on you! [email protected]

Questions About Checking Accounts, Nintendo Switch, iPods, TSP, and More!
Whats inside? Here are the questions answered in todays reader mailbag, boiled down to summaries of five or fewer words. Click on the number to jump straight down to the question. 1. Great advice for job seekers 2. Old hometown checking account 3. Making your own seasoning mixes 4. Inexpensive Nintendo Switch games 5. Partner has extreme debt 6. TSP contribution questions 7. Uses for old iPod? 8. Job search not that simple 9. Value of authenticating sports cards 10. Financial independence and career plans 11. Advice for selling books 12. True hourly discretionary income question I wanted to offer a little update on my switch to a standing desk for professional purposes. About two weeks ago, I moved my main workstation to a standing desk. The purpose for doing this was to significantly reduce the amount of time I spend sitting in a given day, because sitting for your job all the time has some negative long term health consequences. I did recognize that doing this fully cold turkey is a bad idea, and so I planned from the start to do it in stages. My plan was and still is to use the desk until I felt noticeable discomfort, then switch to a laptop in a chair for a while, then maybe alternate back later in the day. My goal was to simply raise my average time at the standing desk a little each week as I strengthen different muscle groups. After a couple of weeks of doing this, Ive found that the big impact has been on my lower back, with a smaller impact on my feet. Im able to work for about four to five hours a day at the standing desk, with other work time spent sitting in a comfortable chair with a laptop. What generally happens is that my lower back starts to get sore, not in a something is broken way but in a this is a muscle thats getting taxed due to exertion and needs a break way. Ill sit down for a while and itll feel much better. However, its constantly experiencing a low-grade soreness, the kind of soreness that happens when you exercise a muscle group. Theres nothing wrong here if I felt something wrong, I would stop using the standing desk for a while. However, it can be a little uncomfortable. Ive had some very minor foot discomfort, mostly on my heels, but nothing significant and it honestly seems to be fading over the last few days. Its hard to tell yet whether or not the standing desk is improving my health in any notable way. I certainly dont think its been bad, but I havent noticed a big health improvement. I do exercise most days, so thats definitely a positive factor, but its hard to extract the benefits of standing with the other benefits of exercise. I think its very likely that there have been some minor benefits, and I likely would have noticed more if I didnt already exercise. Its all about feeling healthy for as long as possible. On with the questions. Q1: Great advice for job seekers I wanted to share some advice from my own experience as an interviewer [in a large corporate HR department]. The big thing is that you shouldnt be hard on yourself if you interview for a job and dont get it. Often, there is already a candidate that is pre-selected and the interview process is a mere formality. Someone thought you were a good candidate and brought you in, but you didnt actually have a real chance at the job no matter how you interviewed. In fact, you should treat all interviews like that. Dont get stressed about them, because theres a good chance that theres already an anointed candidate. I would say that 75-80% of the time, we already have our minds made up regarding which candidate to hire before the interview process begins and interviews virtually never change our minds. Sometimes we will interview someone great and put them on a list of people to call in the future but almost without fail those people already have a job when we call them back. So please dont be hard on yourself if you dont succeed at an interview! And dont get overly stressed about it because theres a good chance that theres already an anointed candidate anyway. Just go in there and answer the questions and learn about the company and let the chips fall where they may. Alison This is great advice, and in line with some of my own hiring experiences in the past. I have been on all sides of this coin at various points. I have been the anointed candidate in a hiring process. I have also been one of the other candidates in a hiring process (where I knew someone else was anointed for an absolute fact). Ive also been involved with several hirings, some of which had strongly preferred candidates and some of which did not. The thing is, you never really know which kind of situation it is when youre interviewing. It may be a more open position where you actually have a good chance, or it may be a situation where you are one of the other candidates in an open process engineered to bring in the vastly preferred candidate with minimal questions. I think the mantra of dont worry about it is the right one here. Just go in there, answer the questions, ask some questions about the company, and move on and keep looking for the next interview or opportunity. If youre the right candidate, theyll call. Often, you wont be, and it wont be due to a fault of your own. Q2: Old hometown checking account I have left a checking account open at my old hometown bank for the last 20 years. It pays a very small interest rate 0.05%. I have a balance of about $1,200 in there. I have always looked at it as a last ditch emergency fund. If anything seriously goes wrong, Ill go there and use that money. But its just sitting there. Isnt there something better I could be doing with it? Dana I dont think theres anything wrong with having a last ditch emergency fund in a bank thats not easy to access. That idea is fine by me. However, its probably just going to sit there for a long time, so you might want to consider doing something with it that earns a better return. The next time youre in your hometown, stop by that bank and see what other options they have. Simply explain that this is an emergency fund for you and you want it in a place where it earns a little more, doesnt lose value, and could be withdrawn in an emergency but isnt likely to be withdrawn. Its very likely that theyll suggest a certificate of deposit, which is akin to a savings account except that it earns a bit higher interest rate and theres a small penalty for withdrawing it early. It wont take very long at all for the CD to earn more than the penalty for early withdrawal and then, after that, its onwards and upwards. Make sure that the bank allows you to automatically roll over the CD when it matures. Right now, with interest rates a bit higher than they were but still fairly low, Id choose a medium term CD, something in the range of one to two years. That will give you a higher interest rate than a short term CD but wont lock you in to these relatively low historical rates forever. Set it to automatically roll over, then forget about it until that last ditch emergency occurs. Q3: Making your own seasoning mixes Have you ever written an article about making your own seasoning mixes instead of buying mixes at the store? You can buy the component spices and mix them yourself and save a lot of money if you use seasonings a lot. I make an Italian seasoning and a chili seasoning and a toast seasoning myself. Margaret Toast seasoning? Youre going to have to send me that one. I have a bagel seasoning mix that I like to use on buttered toast sometimes I wonder if theyre similar. Although Ive mentioned seasoning mixes before and noted how its cheaper to make your own, I dont think Ive ever written a listing of the various spice mixes we have and how we store them. I store most of my spice mixes in large baby food jars that we still have from when our children were babies. I usually make them by mixing other spices by the teaspoon into a bowl and then stirring them thoroughly so theyre mixed, then I fill up the jar with the spice mix. I use masking tape for labeling. Using a mix is a learning experience. Over time, you start figuring out how much to put in stuff. Our chili mix, for example, usually takes a tablespoon and a half per batch, and a batch fills up our slow cooker about halfway. I could write a full post about this if theres interest, including some of my recipes. Just send me a message on Facebook if youd like to see that. Q4: Inexpensive Nintendo Switch games My husband and I bought our son a Nintendo Switch for Christmas. It is his first video game console and he had been asking for it all year so it was really fun to see him open it. Both sets of grandparents got him a game for it so he has had two games to play. His birthday is coming up soon and we asked him what he wanted and of course he wanted a Switch game. We asked him for a list of the ones he wanted and it has 15 or so games on it. The problem is that they are all $50 or more. Why are Switch games so expensive? Our full birthday gift budget for him is $50. Can you help? Anna This is a consistent challenge with Nintendos consoles, and it has been since the 1980s. Nintendo makes very high quality exclusive titles for their consoles those are usually the ones that wind up filling wish lists for console owners but they rarely go down in price until later in the consoles production cycle and the Switch is a pretty young system. Trust me your son isnt being greedy here. Hes probably listing most of the best games for the console, but they all happen to be expensive ones. I would guess that in a year or two, Nintendo will have a line of some of their top titles from a few years prior as Platinum titles for a much lower price point around $20 but were not there yet. So what can you do now? My recommendation is to visit a video game store that sells used games, like Gamestop, and see what they have available for the Switch thats used. Switch games, as you know, come on small cartridges, so its very easy to test a game to make sure it works you can ask them to test it before you buy. Getting a game used in the original packaging will still cost 50% to 75% of the sticker price and the selection may be a bit limited, but this is probably a fairly safe bet for getting one of the games he wants within your price point. A used Switch game is just as good as a new one in terms of someone focused on actually playing the games, so Id look there. Another approach would be to give him a gift card to the Nintendo eShop. There are a lot of very good downloadable titles for the Switch, and you use those gift cards to buy those downloadable titles. While this wouldnt give him any of the games he specifically wants, it would enable him to get a couple of games at least, and there are some very good games for $9.99 or less on the eShop. Q5: Partner has extreme debt I recently discovered that my bride-to-be (June) has about $140K in student loan debt. She had said that she had some student loans in the past but I did not have any idea how much. I am very uncomfortable with being saddled with that much debt. This has caused a great deal of conflict between us over the last few months and I found this out during the holidays. I am not sure what to do. Daniel The biggest factor Id look at is her day to day behavior right now. Is she a frugal person? Does she watch her nickels and dimes? Is she committed not in words but in actions to getting that debt paid off? Is she making extra payments on that debt? If you see that, then I wouldnt fret about it. On the other hand, if she seems to think that such a big debt isnt a big deal, she spends money frivolously all the time, and she isnt making much progress on that debt I would think very, very carefully about this relationship, because thats a value mismatch thats going to chafe for years and years. Beyond that, I would also consider what kind of field that her degree is in. Was the degree she earned in a field with a high income potential, or was it something that will never earn a substantial income? Also, Id look at other factors, like whether or not parental support was promised and then denied. If shes aiming for a high paying career, such as medicine or law or some types of engineering, I wouldnt worry too much about it. If she took out that much debt for a career path that has a very low likelihood of earning a high salary, I would be really concerned. I would also be concerned with that level of debt if there was also significant financial support from her parents where did all of that money go? The challenge with marriage is that you are financially tied to each other in a very deep way and her choices regarding the debt she took out for her education are indicative of the decision making process she will likely employ going forward except now youll be financially liable for them. Having that much debt unless you are both high income earners will significantly affect your life decisions for a very long time, likely for the rest of your life. It will delay your ability to have children that you can support financially, for starters. It will alter both of your career choices and possibilities. It will delay your ability to have a home of your own. I guess, in this situation, what I would really look for are signs of financial maturity beyond that of the student loans. Is she focused on repaying that debt with or without you? Is she making the most of her degree? Does she spend frivolously? I cant answer for you whether this woman is worth it to you. She may be perfect for you in every other way, in which case youll be happier with her. However, having that much student loan debt, and given the alarm bells it sets off in your head, is a sign of likely incompatibility over financial issues, and thats not a recipe for a great marriage. As always, conversation is key, as is paying attention to her actions. What kind of steps is she taking (not just talking about, but taking) in her life knowing that huge debt is sitting there? If youre struggling to answer that and this debt makes you this uncomfortable, this may not be the best situation for you. Q6: TSP contribution questions I am 36 years old, single, no children, no plans to ever marry. I just got a government job that I hope to keep for the rest of my life. Knowing that I am receiving FERS and Social Security already in retirement, how much should I contribute to my TSP to be able to have a comfortable retirement?Want to retire at 65 and have about the same amount of disposable income when I retire. Janine For those unfamiliar, FERS is the pension plan for US federal government employees. TSP is an optional 401(k)-like plan for additional retirement savings. Based on this, FERS should provide about 33% of your final salary when you retire. Social Security, depending on your income level, will provide somewhere around 30% of your income. That means you need to make up about 37% of your income from TSP. If you contribute 5% of your salary to TSP, the federal government matches another 4%. Above that, theres no matching. Given all of that information, I ran some back of the envelope calculations and conclude that given your age and your aim to retire at age 65 with your full salary intact from your various retirement sources and that you want to be able to draw from TSP for the rest of your life, you should contribute 15% of your salary to TSP. This should enable you to withdraw enough from TSP each year to make up your salary shortfall when you retire at age 65 and the TSP balance should last for the rest of your life. Youll want to invest TSP fairly aggressively the target retirement options should work. While I cant guarantee that 15% will get you there, I can certainly say that it is extremely likely that it will either get you there or get you very close to your goal. Q7: Uses for old iPod? Found an old iPod in a desk drawer along with charging cable. Is there any use for this or should I just junk it? I powered it up and it turns on just fine. Adam I dont own an original iPod (I had one way back in the day but I sold it off circa 2007-2008), but a friend of mine keeps one in her car and listens to music with it every day using a cassette tape adapter. You could do the same thing with an auxiliary cable if your car has an AUX port. Just load it up with mp3s of a bunch of music and/or podcasts that you like, keep it in your car, and listen to it during commutes. If you have a charger that hooks into the cigarette lighting receptacle in your car, then you can plug into that and keep it permanently charged. My friend has hundreds of albums that she loved in her teens and twenties. If you like alternative or indie rock from about 1990 to about 2007, theres a good chance youll find a ton to love on her iPod. Just fill yours up to the brim with stuff you like and youll always have something to listen to. You can fill it up with the full archives of a podcast and listen to the entire run of a podcast, too. Old iPods are great for these kinds of things. In other words, use it for what it was intended for. Load it up with audio. Q8: Job search not that simple While I appreciate your regular encouragement to go find a new job if your current one is sapping you, its not always that simple. I have been working as a legacy systems programmer for the same company for 16 years. Most of my day is maintaining old code, migrating it to new machines, and dealing with corporate [nonsense]. I literally hate going into work each day. There arent any available jobs nearby that match my skill set. Trust me, Ive looked. I cant move because my daughter has particular health care needs and needs to be near a top notch medical facility. That also means I need good insurance. I cant just go into work and say, Well, time to find a new job today! Thats just a pipe dream. Terry All right, so what jobs are available in your area that are close to your skill set? Youre obviously in a metro area of some kind. I guarantee there are programming jobs in that area. Whats actually available? What things are most similar to your skillset? Once you know that, start honing your skillset at work so that you can make that leap. Learn how to write tools that will help you with the legacy coding you already do. Start trying to port your legacy code over to a new language for modern systems during your downtime. Use this as an opportunity to learn new languages and paradigms. Get involved with any and all local software development groups. Try to go to their face to face meetings and get heavily involved in any online spaces they have, being as helpful as you possibly can there. Build up some good relationships in your field, then just casually ask about positions that match your refurbished skill set. Also, keep your resume honed on LinkedIn so you can be discovered by people who might be looking for folks in your area. Dont aim for hopelessness. Aim for a light at the end of the tunnel. You can do this at any job. I had a job where I was literally shoveling dirt for hours and hours during the middle of the night by myself and yet I found ways to aim that toward my next step. Q9: Value of authenticating sports cards I have a bunch of sports cards mostly baseball and basketball from the 1960s. I have looked at selling some of them individually but when I look online almost all sales are authenticated cards in a special holder. I looked into this and it looks like you send your cards to an authentication service and pay them a fee and they put them in a special plastic holder with a tag that says its authentic and gives it a grade for its condition. Is this worth it for selling trading cards? Are there ways to sell cards without this kind of service? Marvin You basically described the sports card authentication world pretty well. It exists because there was rampant fraud in older sports cards and other trading cards for a while, so some reputable dealers popped up and started offering authentication and grading services so that people would know exactly what they were buying. Its become the de facto standard for any sports cards of significant value. Basically, if the card is older than about 1975 or so, the player has any name recognition at all, and the card is in reasonably good shape, youre going to make more money selling it after authentication than before, even including the cost of authentication. If its a no-name player or its beat up, youre not going to make a whole lot for it anyway, as people will just want those to help complete sets and they wont sell for more than pennies. What Id do is look for Hall of Fame caliber player cards from your collection (or, as a friend of mine said, Hall of Famers plus Pete Rose) and get those authenticated to sell individually. The rest, Id just divide out by set and sell in bulk. (I have an almost complete 1965 Topps set missing just a few commons that Ive worked on for literally decades, so Im fairly familiar with all of this.) Q10: Financial independence and career plans So how much financial independence would a person need to be able to have full career independence where you still want to have a career but you just feel empowered to make whatever choice seems exciting to you without really worrying about salary but still assuming youre earning a decent salary to live on? I make about $80K and think I can live well on about $40K so my savings rate is about 30% after taxes. How many years would I have to do this before money exits the equation as a career consideration? Barney I think the real question youre asking is how much do I need to save so that retirement is fully covered? This calculator is probably my preferred one. Youll want to play around with different settings to see how long youll need to save to hit your goals. The further you are from retirement, the lower your total savings goal will be. Also, if you assume Social Security benefits will come to you at rates similar to whats available today, the lower your total savings goal will be. You may even be at your target in several years. However, Id still recommend that you save for retirement after you hit your goal number if youre earning a good salary. This allows you to walk away even earlier if you just get tired of the rat race before a typical retirement age. Q11: Advice for selling books I have a collection of hardback books I want to sell. What is the best way to get maximum value for them? Tracy First of all, it depends a lot on what books youre exactly trying to sell. Are they novels? Cookbooks? Old Dungeons and Dragons books? Encyclopedias? Youll want to go to eBay and try to get a sense as to what theyre actually worth. You will probably get the maximum value from them by selling them individually. However, that is exponentially more work for only a fairly modest rate of return. You might be able to sell a lot of ten books for $20 or sell them each individually for $3, for example. Is that extra effort in packaging and shipping and tracking and communication for nine additional packages worth the $10 to you? Another note: if youre selling books, USPS Media Mail is your friend. Its a highly discounted shipping rate that applies to sending books through the mail, and it comes with a tracking number. (Its cheap because its slow and USPS knows a book can sit in a warehouse for a day with zero problems.) You should always use this when shipping books and magazines. Q12: True hourly discretionary income question I understand how this perspective helps to highlight the high cost of non-necessary spending now in terms of lost leisure in the future. But I think it overstates the cost of non-necessities in terms of hours worked. In your example where your annual net wage is $34,000 and your annual work hours is 2,740 (so you net $12.41 per hour worked) and your necessities cost $24,600/year, you should account for 1,982 work hours (= $24,600/$12.41 per hour) as covering necessities, leaving 2,740 1982 = 758 hours for non-necessities. In each of those 758 hours, you net $12.41/hour, and that is the cost of your necessities in terms of hour worked. So a $50 board game costs you $50/$12.41 per hour = 4 hours, not 10.5 hours. The key is to see that you still actually net $12.41/hour, regardless of whether those earnings go to necessities or non-necessities. One way to see this is to realize that the approach in the post can lead to unrealistic implications for the hours of work required to purchase non-necessities. For example, suppose in your example above, necessities are only $10,000 year, and non-necessary spending is then $34,000 $10,000 = $24,000. If your hourly wage for non-necessities is really $4.96/hour like the post says, then it would take $24,000/$4.96 per hour = 4,838 hours to earn that $24,000. But you earned the $34,000 with only 2,740 hours, so something is wrong. Max Max is referring to this article from last week, Using Your True Hourly Discretionary Income to Make Smarter Purchases. Youre just looking at the same issue in a different way. Rather than looking at each hour as being subdivided between essential expenses and non-essential expenses, youre doing the same thing with the total hours over a year. In that example, then, 1,741 of the hours you work essentially earn you nothing in terms of spending money, because all of it goes to essentials. So, frugality in essence just means that youre migrating some of the hours you work from your pool of hours spent on essential expenses to the hours you work for spending money. My angle was different. I divided the income from each hour into essential expenses and spending money. The essential expenses gobble up $7.45 of the $12.41 you earn each hour, while your spending money makes up only $4.96 of the $12.41 you earn each hour. So, then, you judge whether an expense is worth it using just the $4.96, since its the only portion you can actually freely spend. In this case, frugality moves a little bit of money from the $7.45 essential expenses per hour pile to the $4.96 spending money per hour pile. Got any questions? The best way to ask is to follow me on Facebook and ask questions directly there. Ill attempt to answer them in a future mailbag (which, by way of full disclosure, may also get re-posted on other websites that pick up my blog). However, I do receive many, many questions per week, so I may not necessarily be able to answer yours. https://www.thesimpledollar.com/questions-about-checking-accounts-nintendo-switch-ipods-tsp-and-more/

DAY 2 - MOVING OUT
I set alarms before bed last night, so that I wouldn’t over sleep and waste any time at all while I’m here. I woke up a couple times at 8AM, thought it was too early so i fell back asleep. Woke up at about maybe 10AM later, went back to bed, woke up a few times later too but I kept falling back asleep. Finally it is 1PM in the afternoon, I got up to see T putting her makeup on by the window. I said first thing “Why didn’t you wake me up dude!” and we turned our attention to whatever was playing on the TV. It was a Korean film, pretty creepy. It had eery music playing and a girl held hostage. I asked what it was, and plot simply goes “boy and girl was very in love, like any average couple, until revealed he’s a little psychotic and tries to murder her”. She escaped and had to run him over with a car, and had a flashback of all the good times they had together which hit me. I don’t even know why. Then the workers in the construction opposite our building caught my attention. There were 2 guys facing our window, one sitting down and another standing up grooming his hair so it seems. It was super funny at the time. Anyway, the conversation woke up G, i went to the toilet to shower and brush my teeth and we all got ready to head out for the day.
We packed up all our suitcases and left them in the condominium at the mean time while we went to grab some brunch. We walked around the same area we were at last night, and decided that we wanted to have some korean place called Jin Joo if i’m not mistaken. The staffs were very friendly and inviting. We sat down and ordered everything in the spiciness level “hot” and instantly regretted it as soon as all the food came. They were all burning red, and tasted burning hot too. We were unable to finish all our food unfortunately, and struggled to as well. I think it was about 2-2.30pm. T said we could check in at 5pm to our airbnb in Bellagio Towers 2, Fort Bonifacio BGC ayyy haha. We walked around after trying to look for a money changer, T didn’t have money. We couldn’t find any, and had to go back to the condo to get to our condo eventually. We got to our place with her mom and aunt. They checked in with us cause they wanted to have a look at the place too. It was floor 4 I think, or 14, i can’t remember anymore, but it was 14J. Under this dude Gerald. We walked in, immediately in awe of the place. It was definitely big enough for the three of us. We each looked around and gathered our own little spot to put our suitcases. It had this amazing view of the BGC and Makati, and a golfcourse in between, next to it was this comfy couch and some blankets. It was always too cold because its facing an air conditioner. A television on the wall, underneath was the wifi which we had quickly connected to as soon as we got in there. On the left of the tv, was the toilet, and next to the toilet was the kitchen, and between it all was a simple white table. I remember how squeaky the stairs to the bedroom are, it was a cute queen sized bed, with a closet and a foldable couch that could be an extra bed, and next to it the ac and the mirror. It ceilings were a little low, but thats understandable. And a little corner by the middle of the staircase which was a nice window, that i wanted to take cool silhoutte photos at but i never got to the point. I did try, but it didn’t turn out the way I want it to look like. Anyway, it’s the evening at this point and I think it took us quite some time, because all the sudden it was 8.30pm. I either can’t remember what we did in between, or travelling and moving really just took all that time from Eastwood to BGC. So its 8.30pm and we were still wondering when are we going to lose her mom and aunt because we can’t wait to have all the time to ourselves and really start this holiday. We tried to brush them off by saying that we are going off to SM Aura, to shop even though we’re aware that the mall closes at about 9pm? But we were just desperate to go buy some clothes for our night out (which her mom knows nothing of). We argued about whether to use a grab or we could walk. And for some reason we wanted to save up, and T was talking about how she had walked there before on foot and that it wasn’t too far away. So we were convinced. There was this park in the middle of the city where there were a group of people excercising, running and just working out to music. It was pretty cool to see. Kind of like SG. As we were almost there, just 2-3 blocks away it started pouring, and we had to take shelter in a random building. We sprinted towards it, while T’s mom and her aunt followed up with their umbrella. I said to T that her mom told us she was in a girl’s scout so she is always prepared for every situation, which is true. I laughed. Over there we tried to hail a grab, but we had a tough time finding one. That was the point when we started regretting our decision and wished that we had just used a cab instead as T’s mother suggested. I didn’t mind it too much because it’s not like every I get stuck in a situation and a place like that. So i was really just chilling and taking it all in. Although there was a mosquito around I think and I hate that. We waited quite a long time to try and find a cab. G was trying and T’s mom was as well. Next to us was about a group of 4 or 5 people taking shelter as well from the rain as they were practicing self defence skills I suppose. It was cool I guess, kept us entertained for a while. I remember just strolling around the area, there was this guy sprinting even though it was raining a little, it didn’t stop him from doing his thing. Across the street were 2 police men just watching the traffic I suppose. I remember also how heavy the rain got that it devoured the skyscrapers. It was almost misty too, we couldn’t see the buildings anymore from the rain. It was cool. I even said “look its manila rain, this is what it looks and feels like when it rains here in manila” haha I’m so silly.
We were contemplating on just walking under the rain. But then the taxi said that he was here, apparently he was across us over the park, so we had to make a run for it quick. Eventually we got to the mall, and it was quite stressful because I couldn’t find anything fitting in forever 21 and topshop either. And if im not mistaken i think her mom had given me $2000p to go shopping? T split up with us because she wanted to go to a hair salon, so she told us to go shop for whatever we needed and could meet up after. G and I got to topshop first, i thought that I had experienced being followed so closely in a store before, but I was wrong, it was way worse in the topshop in manila that night, they were literally right beside us the whole time, and every time that i touch something, they rearrange it like in 3 seconds. I tried on a couple clothing but I wasn’t really into any of them. I bought a top, and as i was paying I told G that we had to go find a money changer. Apparently it was downstairs where the department store is, and that we had to hurry because it would close soon and we needed more money for tonight. After gil paid we left to the money changer and got a few $$ changed. I think we went to F21 after to try and find something, but eventually I didn’t and they started closing the store up. I was quite upset that we didn’t find anything but we decided to just share each others clothes and see what we come up with.

If men have to pay more for car insurance then why aren't women paying more for health insurance?
You can use the same exact argument they use against men to increase their car insurance. http://www.jfponline.com/purls/Pages.asp?AID=2450 From the departments of Family and Community Medicine (K.D.B., E.J.C.) and Internal Medicine (J.A.R.) Reprint requests should be addressed to Klea D. Bertakis, MD, MPH, Department of Family and Community Medicine, 4860 Y Street, Suite 2300, Sacramento, CA 95817. E-mail: [email protected]. BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that women use more health care services than men. We used important independent variables, such as patient sociodemographics and health status, to investigate gender differences in the use and costs of these services. METHODS: New adult patients (N = 509) were randomly assigned to primary care physicians at a university medical center. Their use of health care services and associated charges were monitored for 1 year of care. Self-reported health status was measured using the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form-36 (SF-36). We controlled for health status, sociodemographic information, and primary care physician specialty in the statistical analyses. RESULTS: Women had significantly lower self-reported health status and lower mean education and income than men. Women had a significantly higher mean number of visits to their primary care clinic and diagnostic services than men. Mean charges for primary care, specialty care, emergency treatment, diagnostic services, and annual total charges were all significantly higher for women than men; however, there were no differences for mean hospitalizations or hospital charges. After controlling for health status, sociodemographics, and clinic assignment, women still had higher medical charges for all categories of charges except hospitalizations. CONCLUSIONS: Women have higher medical care service utilization and higher associated charges than men. Although the appropriateness of these differences was not determined, these findings have implications for health care.""

How much would a 2004 Mazda Rx8 Liability insurance cost?

Damaged rental car. How much should I pay?
Hi. I was involved in an at-fault car accident while driving a rental. Here is the rental situation: The rental car was not insured through the independent rental company. My insurance won't cover it either. I was never offered rental insurance and there was no contract signed regarding the car in question. The owner of the rental company has a rent-to-own business as well, and priced the car at $6,000, but is letting me pay just $4,550. According to Blue Book, the car is worth anywhere from $2,100 to $2,900. I'm willing to pay for the car. My question is, do I pay what he is asking or pay what the car is worth according to Kelly Blue Book? If I would have bought the car before the accident I would have never paid $6,000. It was only in fair condition when I got it. Thoughts? Thanks""

Does an auto insurance company look at my grid when transferring insurance to a new vehicle?
Disclaimer; Please, I am not looking to have judgement passed on me as I know I made a mistake. In October 2011 I was convicted of DUI. I served my 1 year driving prohibition but left my vehicle insured because my boyfriend was driving me a lot of places. When my insurance renewed the 2 times since the conviction, my rates didn't go up but I am really not too sure why..I am a long term customer of my insurance company and I can only assume that they were made aware of the conviction in my file but maybe it auto renewed so it went un-noticed? Here is my question. If I purchase a new vehicle and transfer my existing insurance policy to it, is it highly likely that my file will be looked at more closely and my rates will sky rocket? Can the ins company retro charge me for the past 2 years in which my rates did not go up? How long until this conviction falls off my driving record and no longer warrants higher than normal insurance charges? Thank you so much.""

But my question is, what will be the price difference between something like an '04 Volkswagen Jetta and an 04' Audi A4? Both seem to be in the same category of sedan, but I suppose Audis have a little more reputation for being sporty. Suppose there is not significant performance difference between the cars, they are both valued roughly the same, and have roughly the same mileage, what will the difference in insurance rates be and why? Is it possible to give me a rough idea of what I could expect? Thanks in advance!""

Why would an insurance company deny me coverage for not having central air and heating?
We wanted to switch from the local company we had been insuring our house with because their correspondance has always been very rude and they are very difficult to deal with to USAA who we do all of our banking, brokerage, car & boat insurance through and are very courteous and extremely easy to deal with. We were denied coverage because our home does not have central air or heating. We live in South Central Florida so a heating system would be an absolute waste of money (the wall unit in the Great Room and a space heater in the bedroom are more than sufficient to make the house hospitable in the few welcome days of winter cold enough to warrant their use). My wife and I both cannot stand Air Conditioning and would never use Central A/C other than the one or two times a year we would normally turn on our wall unit when it is too hot to bear and the windows and doors cannot be left open. Houses have existed for Milleniums prior to the invention of Central Climate Control and I am sure home insurance existed atleast a few decades before the invention of air conditioning. Why would not having central climate control be a disqualifying factor in getting home insurance coverage? I highly doubt that not having A/C or heat is going to make our house any more likely to be damaged or destroyed in a hurricane, robbed or flooded. Opening the windows and doors instead of having a HVAC system consistantly running in our house makes us less suseptable to fire.""

Car insurance / ownership question?
Right now I live with my parents, we have 3 cars and there are 3 drivers. All of the cars are in my parents name. One of the cars is a total beater and was given to me as my own car, but we never bothered changing the ownership over because we didn't think it would live very long. Now, I'm getting married and moving in with my husband. I'd love to take 'my' car with me but to transfer it to my name would cost a fortune in repairs as it wont pass the safety as it is. It's not a bad car, but things like the parking break don't work and the suspension is awful and I know if I take it in to get the safety done they'll give me 7 days to do several thousand dollars of pointless repairs or scrap my car. My question is can I continue to drive this car while it is under my parents name? I will be living at a different adress from them also. I'm currently also under there insurance policy as a registered driver on this car. Can I continue paying the policy to continue to be an insured driver while living at a different address? If anyone's had a similar situation or is in the insurance business please let me know! I'm stressing out about potentially having to junk a car that drives perfectly fine due to politics. I live in Ontario Canada.""

Will I being paying twice? Can someone please explain""
""Imported Sports Car - Whats cheaper to insure? Registration in my name, or my parents name?""
I have just purchased an imported sports car in Australia worth $18,000. I am 21 (under 25 means huge insurance here). I AM going to get the cars insured in my parents name. But the thing which determines (on paper) as to whether I am the primary driver, or my parents are, is who ever the car is REGISTERED under. My question is....would insurance be cheaper if my car was registered under my name, or my parents? And by how much? Thanks!""

Newborn Covered by Insurance?
My friend's baby was born one month early. She was in the NICU for 5 days due to breathing problems. My friend has health insurance and so does her fiance (seperate policies, different companies). The finance was going to cover the child when she was born. The insurance said she should have been pre-enrolled b/c nicu is not typical newborn charges... and the finances' insurance say they are not responsible until after the 14th (she was born a month earlier than that). jill said my insurance only pays if we are in the hospital the same amount of time.. if she stays longer she is a dependant and wasnt eligable to be added to the fiance's yet.. it makes no sense... and how could she be pre-enrolled.. The finance went in april and tried to add her to his and they said wait til she is born... and she came a month early according to my doc so how could she have added her to mine? The letter she got from the hospital said the baby is covered automatically under the mothers insurance for 30 days after they are born. So; who is responsible for the $26,000 bill for the NICU?""

Hi, I am insured under a program called Healthy New York, which provides affordable health insurance for low income workers. I am pregnant and my OB GYN dropped my insurance. I am allowed to change provider and remain under the same program, and according to Healthy NY, pregnancy is not a preexisting condition if the insured is a sole proprietor , which I am. Problem with Admiral car insurance... heeelp!!!!?
Hello Thank you for entering in my post I've been with Admiral insurance for more than 1 year, which is my 1st car insurance since I've been in England I've been driving for more than 12 years and I've never made a claim before it was a normal and clear day and i was going to work when I had an accident with a girl riding a moped It was a very silly accident, fortunatelly none was injured, and I only had a broken wind-mirrow, which is no more than 50 of damage I had to call Admiral, my insurer, to sort the problem out, I had no other choice Admiral told me I was not covered to go to work since on the policy agreement says: use for social, domestic and pleasure purposes only. And, according to them, to be covered, my policy had to be: use for social and COMMUNITY. So Community for them means, going to work, it is ridiculas but that's what i was told However they said we cover you, you will have to pay 23.74 extra and you will be covered, it was frustrating, a theft, but I let it go... The absurd story didn't even start yet! I gave Admiral all the details which the police had given to me the day of the accident plus some pictures of the scene, which I took before to leave that day Admiral sent an inspector who interwied me at my house. This inspector wrote a statement of 6 PAGES! about my accident, however, I need to say, he did a very good job On the statement states that none was injured and the fault lies with the moped rider, which is also what the police said on the scene. In addtion this inspector suggested to call my insurer again to finally get my car fixed. Admiral told me I will have to pay for the damage myself and, after all their investigation, if they find out it was not my fault, I can ask e refund for the damage, and they added that this investigation can take up to 3 years, so I will have my money back in 3 years! this is because according to them, the moper rider was injured This is absolutely incredible What would you suggest? I would like to get rid of this Admiral policy as soon possible, I would like to claim against it Who could I call to claim against Admiral? Any suggestion according this matter will be very apprecitive thank you in advance for your help""

ok the situation is like this. my family has two cars. (maxima and accent) I (21years old) use the accent and my parents use the maxima. All three of us are under the same insurance plan. California Becomes The First State To Prescribe Food As Medicine
Caren Latney was too weak to do simple household chores. The 51 -year-old had been diagnosed with lung cancer and, as she began management, struggled to stand over her stove long enough to prepare a dinner. She didn’t certainly want to eat, anyway — her intense chemotherapy and radiation left her nauseated and dog-tired. But high-calorie, protein-rich snacks are essential for cancer cases, who face extreme weight loss, according to cancer experts. The American Cancer Society recommends eating with other family members to attain snacks more entertaining, and has suggests for caregivers like specifying six to eight small-minded dinners, drawing smoothies and organizing bland foods to keep nausea at bay. But Latney, single with no family and on a fixed income, had no one available to help her plan food. Protected by both Medicaid and Medicare for her cancer treatment, Latney couldn’t even afford to buy the amount of nutrient required to survive her medication, much less concoct it. Latney’s lack of social and financial support positioned her at risk of being subjected to succumbing from her cancer treatment. Radiation and chemotherapy can cause cases to lose their appetite or suffer from nausea, causing extreme weight loss that can be life-threatening. Her clinic was able to connect her with a neighbourhood nonprofit organization that extradites a complete give of nutrient — three meals and one snack per epoch, each week — to low-income people who are in danger of famine during a serious illness. Eight years later, Latney , now 59, is still receiving the free snacks from MANNA, or the Metropolitan Area Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance in Philadelphia, and the cancer has spread from the lung to the liver. But she ascribes the organization for helping her survive as long as she has. “To be perfectly honest with you, I would not be here” without those extradited snacks, Latney said. Published research into MANNA’s work depicted the banquets had an impact on patient quality of life of canadians — and too major reductions in hospice expenditures, catching the attention of the members of legislators in California. With high rates of nutrient insecurity, chronic illness and Medicaid enrollment, California was looking for a acces to bring down the overall costs of Medi-Cal, the state’s Medicaid program, with efforts that have a proven return on investment. The new pilot program, which officially launched Friday with assistance from regime senator Ben Allen( D) and California assembly members Blanca Rubio( D) and Richard Bloom( D ), stores six nonprofit organizations throughout California that will hand free meals to those who are insured by Medicaid and require a specific diet to assist them to cope their medical condition. Courtesy of Caren Latney Caren Latney , now 59, reads she wouldn’t be here today without the banquet delivery services that are MANNA stipulated. Nutritious, plentiful nutrient represents an outsized persona in helping people removed from major illness or live with a chronic case. In addition to cancer treatment, which requires patients to eat high-calorie banquets, beings with cardiovascular illness may benefit from low-sodium nutrient, while those with type 2 diabetes can better manage their sicknes with banquets that are low in carbohydrate and refined carbohydrates. Across the country, an estimated one in eight Americans — 42 million in total — are food insecure. Not merely does this mean that they may be suffering starvation, but that the kinds of meat they do devour are not nutritious enough to sustain an active, health life. At the same go , paces of chronic disease caused by poverty-stricken nutrition are rising, and the more meat insecure you are, the more likely you are to have chronic diseases like hypertension, coronary myocardial infarction, hepatitis, movement, cancer, asthma, diabetes and arthritis. Despite its importance, menu during an illness can often be an afterthought. Crucially, it is not covered by any medical assurance hope. Instead, parties like Latney have to rely on nonprofits or charity to assist them to fill the nutrition spread, and not all cities have organizations that can help. Organizations like MANNA are sorely requirement throughout the U.S. About one in 10 adults on Medicaid has diagnosed diabetes and more than one in four have some kind of coronary thrombosis. What cases snack can have a major impact on their own health outcomes. But there are only 27 member the organisations of 18 states and Washington , D.C ., in the national Food Is Medicine Coalition, industry associations of nonprofit organizations that cater medically tailor-make food to beings with serious or long-term disabilities. Around the time that Latney began receiving her meals, investigates were also collecting data on how MANNA clients’ medical rates compared to other low-income cases with same medical conditions who did not receive free meals. They found that recipients of these free dinners had average monthly medical overheads “thats been” 55 percentage less than that of Medicaid patients who didn’t get extradited banquets. Hospital admission and duration frequencies were also significantly lower than the switch radical. Most strikingly, people who received banquets from MANNA and have subsequently been hospitalized were 23 percentage more likely to be accomplished back to their dwellings as opposed to a long-term care or reclamation equipment when compared to the dominate radical. Since this small study were launched in 2013, all four companionships that administer Medicaid locally throughout southeastern Pennsylvania have signed agreements with MANNA to deliver specially adapted meals for select patients with diabetes and cancer in an effort to lower nation hospitalization costs. California, where more than a third of its population is covered by Medicaid and one in eight people aren’t sure where their next dinner “re from”, took dismissal . Its brand-new 12 -week Medi-Cal pilot program will extradite peculiarly articulated banquets, as well as in-home trips from a registered dietitian, to 1,000 parties with congestive heart failure — a patient radical that has one of the highest rates of hospital readmissions within 30 days. This three-year program will cost$ 6 million in total, and the money is spread out across six nonprofits throughout California, including Project Angel Food in Los Angeles County. LA Care Health Plan Volunteers ready snacks for bringing at Project Angel Food in Los Angeles. The photo was taken after a press conference on May 4, 2018, announcing the beginning of a pilot program to deliver low-sodium dinners to beings with congestive heart failure in Los Angeles county. Richard Ayoub, CEO of the organisation , notes further that the extremely restraint diet that myocardial infarction patients have to follow would be requesting for people of any income level, let alone people who sometimes have to choose between paying for health care and paying for food. People with coronary thrombosis can have only two grams of sodium — less than one teaspoon — a epoch. Any more will encourage the body to retain water, which increases the magnitude of blood and violences an already weakened stomach to work harder. Managed food would be a cheap, handy hand-picked for these patients, but these products are usually high in sodium. If the Food Is Medicine pilot program succeeds in demonstrating significant cost savings for Medicaid, known in California as Medi-Cal, the ripple effects could be enormous. “We guess food is medicine and that the matter is menu will restrain people out of research hospitals, thus saving Medi-Cal hundred of thousands, if not millions, of dollars, ” alleged Ayoub. If Medi-Cal represents nutrient a health benefit as Ayoub hopes, all federal departments could assess the return on financing and conclude that food should be a national Medicaid benefit. John Baackes, CEO of LA Care Health Plan, one of the public business that administers Medicaid insurance in Los Angeles county, admired California’s pilot project as the speculation the free movement of persons needed to mount a national action for food as a component of health care. He receives the state’s pilot program as one small-minded step in the direction of re-imagining medical care to include social services that affect state, from accommodate to nutrient defence. “We’re very concerned to interpret a programme designed like this to be translated into policy change, ” he read. As researchers and policymakers wait for the data from California’s pilot project to start rolling in, Latney to mention here that no matter what the revert is for the regime, the effect these snacks will have on people struggling to survive will be immeasurable. “They want to have not only a meal, but a meal that’s designed for them to survive, ” she suggested. “I think it’s going to have a very, very big impact.” Download Read more: http :// www.huffingtonpost.com/ enter/ california-food-program-medicaid_us_5af 1ffb7e4b0ab5c3d6adae4 http://dailybuzznetwork.com/index.php/2018/05/28/california-becomes-the-first-state-to-prescribe-food-as-medicine/

Perth with Kids
If you’re thinking of travelling to Perth with kids, this is the post for you! We went to Perth with our 7 year old and our 8 months old baby, and stayed for 11 days in total. The general impression when we landed, was compared to Hong Kong, everything is super duper relaxed. The paths and roads are all wide enough for strollers of all sizes. We have a Britax all terrain stroller, with big wheels and we felt it suited just fine. We had a dilemma at home thinking should we be taking our Yoyo Babyzen lookalike Chinese knockoff, man, am I glad I did not bring that instead. The paths are quite raw and rocky, so I’m guessing lighter strollers would make the child feel all the bumps and grinds on the go. I’m all for convenience, but just not sure its the best, when they are as little as 8 months for them to feel the waves of traffic and breathe in so much exhaust fumes.
One of the things I must say is, if you like shopping for kids stuff, Australia is definitely your kinda place. I visited Hay Street and Murray Street on our first day, thinking back it probably was not the smartest idea. I just saw myself going crazy and buying every cute thing in the stores. Guess what?? To those of you who are from the US, and living in Asia where Pottery Barn and West Elm do not have concept stores, they are here on Hay Street in Perth!! Oh yea, I simply went crazy, so much so, I wanted to buy a house in Perth just to get all the furniture to decorate it. Yes, I know how crazy that sounds, but I also know some of you would agree with me, and urge me on!!
The two department store almost right opposite each other on Murray street are David Jones and Myer. Both are extremely kids friendly when it comes to parents rooms, nursing rooms and changing facilities. However, I must say in Australia they are not really keen on private rooms for nursing, not as much as in Hong Kong anyway, from what I can see. Unlike other countries, the parents room in Myer, is on the ladies fashion floor instead of the Children’s floor. Which made some sense, I guess, in a old fashioned way because it sort of assumes that only mums deal with their babies, which is not at all the case in our household, hubby changes all nappies.
One thing to note is that there are not much covered space when it comes to shopping around Perth CBD, and in Spring, thats what they call it now, it does still rain quite a lot. We found it really tough around the city centre with the wind and rain, having not brought rain covers for the stroller with us, which was stupid.
A key factor to note is that the traffic lights for pedestrian crossings in Perth change signal extremely rapidly. You have on average a 10 second window to cross, and sometimes, if you’re lucky around 25 seconds, so make it count people, make it count.
Perth Zoo
We entered the zoo at about 11am and it was already starting to get busy. When I say busy I don’t mean the kind of busy you get in Asia, you will still be able to have a nice view into all the enclosures. The people here are all so civilised, there won’t be any of the throwing food into enclosures you see in some Zoos around the world. The Zoo is open everyday of the year from 9:00am - 5:00pm. When I was a child I didn’t get the chance to visit many zoos or wildlife parks, mainly due to the fact that I had two full time working parents, but of course also there just was not that many zoos around in China. This is the first time Rae has been in a zoo as well, previously we have been to night safaris with her, but she was asleep for the entire time.
There was a small queue coming into the Zoo, but it went by quite quickly. We decided to go anti-clockwise around the zoo map. Starting off at the African Savannah. Don’t forget to collect a Zoo passport for your little ones so they can collect stickers and a stamp at designated stations around the Zoo, this will add in some motivation when their little legs get tired and just want to call it quits.
Elle was so excited to see the giraffes and the zebras, surprisingly as those are the ones we see most in other countries too. She just loved how amazing they all looked. Of course there were times we caught her pinching her nose from the smell you get in Zoos, but she soon got over that. We were lucky Rae was asleep for the first bit and woke up just as we got to the zebra and rhino enclosures. She was fascinated at the sight of the animals wondering around, her little eyeballs followed the animals around the enclosure as they went about their daily routines. The lion was a little hard to spot sitting on top of his rock, it did get up for a brief ten seconds to wonder around, before it sat back down on its mighty rock as if it was a nice bed.
Next up was the Asian rainforest, where we saw the elephants. Elle learnt about why the male elephant needed to be in an enclosure on his own while the other two females were in a different one. We were lucky enough to see one of the females taking a bath in her own water hole, it was a beautiful sight to see. It went by so fast, we didn’t catch a photograph sadly… Make sure you don’t miss the tigers in the Asian Rainforest part of the zoo. They may be lying around behind the rocks, or slowly moving around, but keep your eyes peeled and you should be able to spot one.
The highlight of the visit would have to be the Australian Bushwalk, where there are no fences or enclosures, they are just open areas where Kangaroos, Wallabies and Koalas roam free. It was amazing to see how tame these animals are, they just hop around, sit around, lie around in their daily lives. This would never be possible in a zoo in China for instance, as for sure there would be kids and definitely adults running up to them to touch them or worse, throwing things at them. We were very lucky to see some kangaroos hoping around, and an entire bunch just lying there getting some sun. Was definitely a beautiful sight for Elle, she was amazed at how calm they all seemed. There was also the most “chill” kangaroo… he just seemed so happy lying there with his legs wide open enjoying the heat from the sun. There was a brief shower during our visit, but it only brought nice sunshine afterwards, which was well needed seeing as what a terrible week of rain we have already had.
We definitely miscalculated how hungry we would become, as we did not bring any packed lunch or snacks with us. Everywhere we looked people were ready with their sandwiches, packet snacks. We got so hungry we bought extremely overpriced crisps from the vending machines. It was okay, lasted us enough to where we needed to go so that was good. Lesson learnt though for any other family outings.
