A few of our ward juniors are waiting for the oncall FY1 (intern) doctor to call back after we paged them, so we could hand over jobs for the evening and go home. FY2: Oh, I know who’s oncall, it’s my FY1, I’ll just give them a ring. Fellow CT1: Wait, you got your own personal FY1?! Why don’t I have one? What do we have to do to get one?! *sort of joking*

FY2:  Oh yeah, didn’t you?

FY12 was referring to their previous FY1 from their old team; you still hold a fond place for colleagues after you rotate to a new job. And we sadly have no FY1s in my ward.

In the Olden Days of adequate staffing and Strict Heirarchies, it was considered commonplace for more senior docs to delegate work to their juniors; the house officer (FY1) would ultimately be expected to scribe, do ward jobs, discharge summaries, send referrals and any other scutwork the team generated, so that their more senior SHOs could focus on sicker patients or go to surgery/clinic/whatever was required by their training. Maybe it didnt suck as much as it sounds like it did; I suspect the workload was less than it is today. And I don’t really agree with any system that lumps everything on the FY1, not when there’s often a significant workload and the newest doctors are still learning to organise themselves; I very much believe in working with our juniors to show them how to get stuff done, and sharing the workload. Yes, each grade has their own responsibilities; the role of an FY1 is to deal with the low level jobs so that their seniors are free enough to focus on sick patients, but their role isn’t to struggle whilst their fellow teammates sit around. Partly because I’ve been there; SHOs who disappeared god-knows where when there was just so much stuff to be done just aren’t team players. And neither are consultants who generate what feels like 100 jobs but then don’t help you prioritise them, only to nitpick that you only got 999 of them done. And partly because the way things stand, there’s rarely a time where staffing is good enough to allow that. I might be a doc with a few years’ experience, but I’m still doing all my own ward jobs like I did during FY1. Hell, if the nurses are busy, I take my own urine samples, do my own bloods and cannulas and then porter my own samples to the lab, repeat my own obs, do my own ECGs, run stat fluids, and change bedding in A&E between seeing patients. Efficiency means getting everything done in such a way that the most important stuff gets done in good time, and that usually means being really proactive, rather than ‘delegating’ an excessive workload to a junior.

i'm so excited for track this year!! hopefully it doesn't get cancelled like last year since this is my last year so :(( we did have cross country this year though, so i am hopeful!

in high school my winter break is like.. a week and half 😔 and summer is two months. but in uni the winter break is closer to a month, and the summer break is a bit longer as well (two and half - three months i think!) but getting that extra week for you guys must be soooo nice!! & good luck with all of your uni apps! i'm sure you will do amazing 💛

oooh! that sounds so interesting!!! tho i must say i share your sentiments regarding white ppl and colonization :// gross. it definitely seems like it'll be fun tho!! i def wanna learn more about indian history bc i feel like i know nothing about anything :( and it's like!! my ppl!! i wanna study it as like a minor or smth in uni! if not then political science :)

that's sounds so fun!! children are so special and make me so happy! 🥺 and yeah i think i'm into either genetics or hematology!! last year in biology, the genetics unit was so much fun i would love to study it even more in depth! and endocrinology is so fun too w all of the different hormones and all the things goin on w it!

AHHHH i feel that!! there have been plenty of times where i'm just sitting at a traffic light singing along to whatever song has come on yk?? and i definitely have that urge to dance but for the sake of safety i must settle for my poor singing and head bopping :(

ahh yeah when my doctor gave me the vitamins my mom immediately started laughing bc my parents always make fun of me for never wearing short stuff aljdlsks i much prefer longer dresses & pants! like flowy stuff you know?

and yes!! exactly there’s smth different n oddly nostalgic learning about the history and culture of ur own people, like those were your ancestors n like we learn a lot of whitewashed history in school and one day if no one learns these things, our own history from our own people’s perspectives could be forgotten :( omg political science sounds rlly cool gl w that <3

and aa i love genetics sm!! i really wanna learn about gene editing to cure diseases (none of that designer babies thing tho thats a lil messed imo) but to help those w fatal n chronic illnesses!! so u can change the dna sequences a bit?! and oo i looked up haematology just then and it look so interesting!! thats def smth i’d be into as well!! 

and like also on the topic of driving, imagine being at the traffic light n suddenly left n right comes on and ur suddenly losing ur mind because wow what a song

i am!! so excited!! n flattered!! u wanna read it and u reserved it, i really do hope u enjoy it!! ngl i found it a bit confusing at first so like if u do feel free to ask anything i could prob talk about it for days but yea!! and also yes we do get to order our books for the new year a bit earlier so i got about eight weeks to do a bit of studying so i wont be utterly confused later on n especially with physics 😌 the word rotational kinematics makes my head spin already i have no idea what that is bc trust me i never said i was good at physics but hopefully that’ll change next year! and like i cant believe its almost the end of the year wow, the concept of time?! mindblowing.

and yes!! flowy stuff!! makes me feel angelic or princess like!! i love when skirts kinda brush past ur calves so i can hike them up n feel like im a graceful noble lady who also doesnt allow any old council man to talk over her!! and i love long pants i feel a bit more professional n very lawyer like or either that i feel a lot more chill n i can cuff my pants up slightly!!
