I came across my first AI fic on Wattpad a couple of months ago. It was for the Harry Potter fandom and the author did warn for it in the summary and the AN, so I knew what I was getting myself into. I just feel that issues aside with AI scraping stories to create its own, AI just doesn't know how to tell a story at all.

The AI story was all over the place really. It genuinely forgot that in a previous chapter that one of the main characters was in a life and death situation, but the next chapter opened up with him being present with his friends (in name only, I guess?), but then the next scene was where the friends of this character had to actually go and save him... and like the character was mentioned going with them even though he wasn't actually there with them. It was just so bizarre.

Not sure if the story is still posted there, but I never went back after reading the first few chapters. I did tell the author in a comment that it's a shame that the story was AI created because if they wrote a story that followed the same story line, I'd love it. Not sure if the author took my words to heart and honestly, I don't want to go and check.

It's just... Why use AI to write stories? It's not like you're asking for prompt ideas or asking to 'bounce ideas' so that you can form your own and start writing.

I just wanted to put this post out there to say that AI generated stories are everywhere now. AO3, Wattpad, possibly a few on FFN. It's a problem for sure when you consider the fact that in order to 'write' the story, that AI is using the works of other fic writers to do that writing, too.

no way ppl are using ai to write ao3. what happened to being a tortured writer. what happened to blood on the page. what happened to the ao3 curse. people used to get run over, have their houses burned down, break their entire spines and they still put in the work to finish a chapter. fuck you, using ai. y’all are weak

Okay I guess I could start from the beginning. WHY is Kwon's death treated so LAX.

I can't be the only person who thought that Kwon's death and the legal/emotional ramifications of that (or lack thereof) felt so lackluster??? A KID DIED. EVEN BESIDES THE FACT THERE'D BE AN INVESTIGATION ABOUT THIS (because we all know Cobra Kai would ignore a sense of realism if it meant getting to the badass part), DOZENS OF PEOPLE SAW A DEAD PERSON WITH THEIR OWN EYES. I could believe the Sekai Taikai breeding such a competition-hungry crowd that they're cannibalizing themself into turning back towards their fatal "darker" years, but it's sickening seeing these characters want to bounce back without so much as a second thought about what killed Kwon, because it wasn't just a blade. IT WASN'T JUST THE BLADE. WHY DO THEY NOT CARE. Also fuck Mitch for eating nachos during Kwon's moment of silence.

I'm sorry everybody who ships them I truly am but I just cannot deny the fact that I am just anti Jarmen. It's such a stupid thing and I hate that it's come to this point, but genuinely every moment Johnny and Carmen are smiling and being a family made me feel the same sick feeling as watching The Stepford Wives. I just caaaaan't watch Johnny and Carmen be so fucking happy like it's a trad life progaganda campaign. The way Johnny and Carmen barely feel like actual, nuanced characters — ESPECIALLY CARMEN, who gets the short end of the fucking stick when it comes to characterization and Actual Depth — to then be representative of this heteronormative, nuclear family ideal picture perfect bullshit just ruins the idea of them two. This especially hurts Carmen, who's basically stuck in storage until she could be turned on to become Miguel's Mom, Johnny's Girlfriend, Johnny's Wife, the fucking Jarmen baby's MOM AGAIN. Carmen's identity as a character is chained to either her son or her main character love interest, and it's sickening watching the Jarmen scenes celebrate this pastiche of domestic bliss.

I hated the proposal. I don't even have anything else to say about this. I just hated the proposal so much.

The American Exceptionalism present in this part actually made this hard to watch Jesus Christ. There's nothing more awful than watching a sequel television show to a movie trilogy that criticized American militarism and imperialism to now having a blond blue-eyed man barking like a drill sargeant to his child soldiers in a karate tournament with a kill count to "show those international assholes".

This show loooooooves using women to fuel the storylines for men and cutting corners by not even showing the female character's perspective or role just to make it all about the man Kumiko Girl I Am So Sorry.

When I said I wanted Chozen to get all the bitches, this is not what I meant. Chozen Toguchi, you remain one of the weirdest character decays in modern television, and I wish everyone who got you there dead.

I like the Samtory scene :) I'm not gonna pretend and act like Sam and Tory being girl best friends wasn't the thing that made me smile the hardest. WITH THAT BEING SAID, I'm conflicted about my thoughts on Sam's storyline and ESPECIALLY TORY'S. With at least Sam, she's getting the opportunity to explore her future that isn't so tied with karate or Daniel, which is good for her! SURE, it would have been nice to see her compete, but honestly the fact that Sam had a the option to leave karate and did so on her volition because of her values feels mote satisfying to me, compared to Tory and Robby. Regarding Tory, I really wish I could be happy for how her story ends — but, like Robby, there's just something aggravating seeing that karate is made out to be her only option pass high school. And in a way, because we never got anything substantial about Tory's interests and passion outside of karate, it is??? Nevermind that karate — no, COBRA KAI — had gotten Tory into so much trouble, made her into a child soldier for a cult, weaponized her grief and anger, etc. I don't know what a "good" end to Tory's story should have looked like, but it's hard to say for me if this was it.

SPEAKING OF, a character I definitely feel like their story was unsatisfying as fuck was ROBBY. At least Sam had the OPTION to leave. Robby was MADE. AND SURE, HE GETS THE SPONSORSHIP BULLSHIT TOO, BUT WHAT A STUPID DEUS EX MACHINA. And that whole thing about Robby being happy he doesn't need to win, because he has his Family? With Johnny? Shut the fuck up.

Robby coming in to save the day by conveniently daying I wuv you~ to Tory. Fuck you all I hate this fucking show.

ON A HAPPIER NOTE, Miguel's feels more fleshed out and satisfying as a whole. Mayyybe the flashbacks did hit 🙄🙄🙄 Miguel's progression, while it's had its stalls, remains one of the stronger parts of Cobra Kai as a whole, and Miguel's journey culminating into proving himself against Axel and going to his dream college, having grown so much as a person with what he's learned in karate and in life, did pull on my heartstrings. And regardless of everything else, Miguel and Johnny's relationship felt strong from the start and until the end.

AND YOU KNOW WHAT, KREESE AND SILVER'S DEATH PISSED ME OFF TOO. I can't even formulate the reasons why I find their deaths so unsatisfying, but MAN WHAT THE HELL. The closest I could approximate is just the utter bullshit that is Kreese's redemption arc — NOW is when he realizes the harm he's caused? NOW is when he's going back and apologizing to the people he's hurt? NOW Kreese is the one to do the noble act of killing himself and Silver? Come the fuck ON. I don't even think I'm mad that it's come so late, but that it feels so rushed and contrived to get Kreese and Silver out of the story as quick as possible (WHICH IS A HUGE ISSUE FOR COBRA KAI AS A WHOLE). AND THE FACT THAT NOBODY REALLY REFLECTS UPON THEM MISSING? I SUPPOSE THE OTHER CHARACTERS SORT OF KNEW, BUT NO THOUGHTS? NOTHING? THESE CHARACTERS THAT HAVE MANIPULATED SO MANY, THAT HAVE HURT AND MADE OTHERS HURT, THAT KEEP THESE CHARACTERS IN A CAGE OF TRAUMA — JUST FUCK OFF AND DIE??

AND YOU KNOW WHAT, JOHNNY BREAKING DOWN TO KREESE WHAT HE DID WRONG ALSO MADE ME MAD. Because you know what, Kreese WAS there to be Johnny's role model and he DID teach him strength. And Kreese abused Johnny, poisoned his mind, and want to kill and keep killing him. And it's all connected and the same fist that represented strength is the same fist that beat Johnny down. And I'm so mad that Johnny is angry at Kreese for abandoning him when Kreese had been choking Johnny on a leash, dragging him to throw him into the street. He abandoned you and suffocated you. What the FUCK, Cobra Kai

Idk man I wish I could be happy about Johnny bringing back Cobra Kai. But this EXACT issue has been like this from the beginning, that it's not specifically the NAME or whether it's Johnny or Kreese or Silver or Kim teaching. It's the fact that Cobra Kai, since its inception, is a product of a jingoistic, militaristic fighting technique FROM A US VETERAN that breeds violence and cruelty for the sake of domination and name. I know Cobra Kai (the show) has tried to distance the dojo into being more connected to Korean Tang Soo Do, but it's so fucking frustrating that they'll ignore the dojo's roots in the American Military and specifically American imperialism of Kreese's direct influence because they don't think it's a bad thing!!! I can say so much about how I dislike the the attempt to distance Cobra Kai from Kreese, but ohhh my godddd

The fact that it's taken this show six seasons to mention the injustice Japanese-Americans suffered through by the American government detaining them under racist suspicion is fucking awful.

Third of all, in spite of Cobra Kai and Daniel carrying the legacy of Mr. Miyagi after his (and Pat Morita's) death, Mr. Miyagi does not feel like an echoed presence in the show. Perhaps this would have been too much to ask for, considering Johnny is the main character, and Cobra Kai needs to have its own identity outside of The Karate Kid in some way. However, the lack of presence (and I don't mean physical) of Mr. Miyagi to me is deafening in its silence. Of all the characters coming back to the Cobra Kai, the one that feels most absent is Mr. Miyagi. How does that absence make its place in the narrative? Do viewers feel his absence? Are they looking back to what Mr. Miyagi taught? Are they missing on his presence? Can they feel what they missed? I don't know if this makes sense, but I'm just thinking about the last of Cobra Kai and their defining legacy on the people who've watched, and those who could have gone through all of Cobra Kai and not cared about Mr. Miyagi. Ughghhggg.

There's so much I hadn't covered: half the cast being missing because Cobra Kai doesn't know how to stop making too many characters to have satisfying presences, the difference in depth between Axel and Zara, the way this show completely bypasses almost all its Asian characters, Chozen getting with Kim are you kidding me, All of Kim really, Laura's grave having the most egregious continuity error I've seen, Binary Boyfriends, etc., but I'm so tired and I hate this show.

Okay so I finally did all of homecoming wings and Caleb girlies I need some help. I am genuinely curious why you like him. I can't get past the red flags. All the characters (except for zayne as far as I know) have a solid number of red flags. Usually I can get past them. I'm a Xavier girly so clearly I don't mind a bit of jealousy and possessiveness. Caleb's possessiveness is different, his obsession with mc is on a whole other level. I want a man to be protective and want to have me all to himself, but not to the extent that he's locking me up and setting things up to get notifications of my vitals and weight (and I get that mc sucks at taking care of herself and isn't great at reaching out for help but like there has to be a better way). Pls don't put trackers on me and understand the need for boundaries and independence.

And I get the implication with the chip. But just based on messages, bond, and homecoming wings I just can't do it. I do have two 5 star memories that I'm planning to go through tonight, along with some 4 stars, so maybe the dates will change how I feel. I'll post an update after I go through them all. I really am trying to give him a chance (and also trying to rack up more diamonds so I can pull his new 5 star since he's the last one I need).

I know that it's a fairly popular opinion that the reason that Ian badmouths Mickey in s6-7 is mostly because the writers wanted us to dislike Mickey and be glad that he was supposed to be permanently gone from the show. However, while I do think this is partially true, I also think that it is veryyyy much in character that Ian says those things and that even if the writers fully planned on having Mickey back in those later seasons, he still would have said what he said.

It basically comes down to the main difference between the Gallaghers and the Milkovichs. The Gallaghers want to escape the southside (at least Fiona down to Liam do), while the Milkovich have claimed it as a part of their identity. They embrace it and are proud to show it off, including Mickey, and even Mandy believes that she will never do any better in life. Because of this, the Gallaghers, who are cocky, look down on the Milkovichs for not wanting to get out of the Southside and see them as more white trash than they are. Ian goes into his relationship with Mickey with this ideology. He's young and wants a boyfriend, and Mickey is hot and gay, so why not?

The problem comes when Ian gets diagnosed. You can see it in 5x10 when Ian calls Mickey the "shit-talking, bitch-slapping piece of Southside trash I fell for" and during that one deleted scene of Ian's dream where he and Mickey are dressed in white and holding Yevgeny. Ian doesn't want to stay in the Southside forever and his dream involves a 'perfect' Mickey, one that wants to hold Yevgeny and have a house together and doesn't cut the sleeves off of his shirts. Mickey didn't initially believe that Ian was bipolar and ignored Fiona and Lip's advice to take him to a hospital to get seen, he's white trash that is happy to scam people with his brothers for the rest of his life. Ian doesn't want that, he wants to have a successful career, live in the suburbs, and grow tomatoes.

After breaking up with Mickey, he's convinced that Mickey would not help with his recovery and mental health. Fiona and Lip certainly think that, plus how is he going to get a good job and recover if his boyfriend is literally in prison and could easily go back?

The problem with that is that Ian is in love with Mickey. Mickey isn't just a shit-talking, bitch-slapping piece of Southside trash, he's the shit-talking, bitch-slapping piece of Southside trash that Ian fell for. Not only that, but the deleted scene of the dream reveals that he genuinely believes in a future with Mickey, and recognises that Mickey is a gentle, loving person, who would make a great dad despite his shitty role model.

These two conflicting ideas are constantly clashing in Ian's head, 'Mickey is bad for me' 'But I love him' 'I don't think I can be where I want to be in life with him' 'I don't want to be without him'. And so, in order to reassure himself, partially through getting other people to agree with him, Ian badmouths Mickey, bringing up the worst of their relationship to convince himself that Caleb and then Trevor is right for him, and a sign that Ian is going to stop being white trash and get out of the Southside, while Mickey would only make him stay.

It's only when Ian realises in s9 that the only person that has made sure that Ian is stuck in the Southside is Ian himself, that he goes, fuck it, I love Mickey and he is a good partner for me.

I think you kinda hit the nail on the head here. I think it's a big part of why a lot of people left the campaign feeling less attached to Bells Hells compared to the Mighty Nein.

You got a little of this flavor in the beginning as Bells Hells got to know one another and kind of tackled some of their background baggage, but as the campaign left the honeymoon period and headed into The Main Plot, you got less and less inter-character moments. Huge stretches between them that left you going 'so how are they feeling??? When are they going to get some downtime to process all this?' We kept being left waiting, sometimes for like three episodes. We as the viewers were used to having that after C2, its like the treat at the end of the stressful fight. All we got instead was Stress Stress Stress for like 70 straight episodes.

Once all hell had broken loose on the apogee solstice, the whole thing felt like a big rush to the finish line, and Character Time was mostly over. It's dnd and you can play it however you want, but I think not getting that time contributed to them not really knowing where they all stood at the end or what they should do, which then caused us frustration as viewers.

To expand just a bit, to me, it felt like we had a specific group of heroes who were very suddenly thrown into some other group's religious story narrative and forced to make a decision that very few of them had personal stakes in other than 'I hate Ludinus'. Their backstories were not religion focused other than FCG. They didn't really have the chance to form new beliefs until after they already had the weight of the world on their shoulders and every interaction with the gods made them feel they were just being used for survival. If a god had reached out previously to help them unbidden in a time of need (other than The Cleric), they would have had a completely different motivation to pick a side bc it would feel like the gods genuinely cared for their children. Even a storyline to pit them against the gods instead of just feeling like they were invisible to them could have been beneficial to their larger character arcs in relation to The Plot.

It was an interesting experiment to put these very neutral unbiased people in charge of that kind of situation, don't get me wrong, but then the vast majority of Character Moments we did get were the constant confused/angry circles of 'why do we care about Them?' and 'but what happens if we do nothing' and it got repetitive and tiresome and people got pissed off at different characters and none of them really even changed. They still didn't really understand one another. In the end, even after learning about the eidolons and the Dawnfather being a dick and talks with the Matron and the Arch Heart, the only thing that STILL tethered them personally to the story was 'Let's stop Ludinus because we hate him for getting Laudna/Oryms husband killed and at least we know he's bad and we'll figure it out this god shit when we get there.'

Not the most compelling but hey, it got them to that finish line.

I think at least some of these unsatisfying pitfalls could have been avoided if they'd had more chances for character/relationship exploration beyond like the first third of episodes and maybe with some more religious theme overtones. It was also kind of a shame that all that build up of the new setting at the start was completely left by the wayside. They Needed a Longer Honeymoon. The apocalypse just rolled around way too early.

I love the C3 characters a lot, but its not the same kind of way I love the M9, and I think its mainly because this campaign was a vehicle for the world's next historical era. There's nothing wrong with that, necessarily, but it is polarizing, and a huge shift from C2. With the M9 we had 140 episodes exploring these characters and who they really were as people and where they came from and how they helped each other heal. You can't get that in just 40 episodes leading into an apocalypse speedrun. They are just two completely different kinds of campaigns. It really is a matter of taste but I'm also quite certain that if Matt could go back and do it from scratch knowing what he now knows, he might have approached this very differently. I do think even the players were left floundering and trying to understand what the narrative wanted from them. This kind of Big Picture History Story needed characters at least a little bit built to theme, I think. This is why Brennan's EXU mini-series are so successful.

Sorry if I took your post a little off topic I just suddenly had a lot of thoughts and I haven't talked about any of this yet lol.

Whatever C4 ends up being and whenever it is, I really hope we see a return of the consistent "I go over to *insert character*" that was lacking this campaign. It's something so simple but so foundational to why I love CR. It used to be so consistent and made even the most mundane things like setting up camp, night guard duty and travel something to look forward to.

I can't tell you how many of these moments with characters just simply talking to each other about anything and everything became some of my favorite moments in all of CR. I remember so many episodes where I looked forward to these breaks more than even combat or some story elements because it immersed me so much in every aspect of the campaign.

To me this is when CR is at its best, it is the foundation that separates it from other AP's and is what pulls you in and hooks you so you're equally as invested to the story or action or honestly anything just like the characters and the cast.

Cramming this hotel room, different people welcomed the late-night kickback once everyone safely returned from the venue and partied for hours, leaving you alone with Jey in the end. 

Sooner than later, you woke up in his arms as warm sunlight beamed from every single window this morning. 

“Baby?” His voice turned low and he subconsciously moved closer as your body tangled with his frame beneath the covers.

“Jey, what?” Your thoughts don’t turn away from him, but so many questions jumbled in your mind. You can’t even remember if someone found alcohol.  

Rustling blankets, Jey glanced toward you with another smile as gold illuminated his bottom teeth. 

“Morning.”  Weight grounded your chance to leave and Jey knew better, kissing you to start the day no matter what 

“Good morning.” You played his game back instead of running. There’s no other choice right now. 

Comfort returned as you smiled against his lips, almost teased the scruffing ends of his dark beard. 

Just as you recalled making love to him for the first time, knocking rattled against the suite’s main door. 

“Jey!” Jey’s twin brother Jimmy Uso called from the hallway out of nowhere. 

“Shit!” Despite laying naked, you hurried out of bed and scrambled to find your clothes, almost ignoring Jey to begin with. 

“Baby? Don’t leave!” Jey caught on without thinking twice, definitely forgoing the chance of Round Two. 

“I’m not getting in trouble with your brother.” You knew so much better than to start rumors behind the scenes despite making adult choices. “Even though Jimmy’s great, he doesn't know how to stay quiet.” 

“I know you’re scared, but…” Jey stepped closer, but you declined his genuine touch. 

“J, stop.” You shook your head toward Jey and gathered belongings, leaving before Jimmy could shout all over again. 

But when you entered the hallway and reached that elevator, you caught Jey taking this final look. 

You didn’t even catch the movement of his lips. 

“I love you.”

Once you vanished, Jey patted one side of athletic pants, remembering the velvet box.

What are your thoughts on The Sisters?

My ultimate, scalding hot take about Warrior Cats, the one thing where I genuinely think myself as the absolute most radical with opinions liable to piss off absolutely everyone, is that I think The Sisters are (conceptually) Just Fine, actually.

The main reason the Sisters are portrayed negatively by the narrative is that from the very beginning of the series it has hammered in the idea that 6 moons old is equivalent to being a preteen, with all the cultural baggage that it implies in Anglo-American culture. But if you think about it, Clan kits are not only a) incredibly sheltered, but b) expected to be facing the possibility of death in battle the MOMENT they leave camp with their mentors the first time.

Within a culture that does not have the same bellicose tendencies as the Clans, and that teaches their young survival skills much younger, I think it makes perfect sense to mark 6 moons old as the age of separation for tom kits. Especially considering that is what actual feral cats do.

The main reason we get instead a negative perspective of the Sisters is down to the cultural misogyny that seeps the narrative. From the main story we see this culture through being that of a tom who slipped through the cracks, to the way in which the PoV characters are constantly going on about how cruel this lifestyle is. Ivypool's Heart in particular was egregious about it, so much so it made me DNF the book.

I am fascinated by the Sisters as a culture. They capture my imagination in a way only the Clans before have done. And just like with the Clans I want to make right by the concept. I think that in the hands of someone who actually wants to take a crack at examining gender issues and they are an invaluable tool.

The main motivation I have for reading TBC one day is The Sisters. The Sisters and my girl!Rootspring concept that I keep rotating in my head.

i always feel bad when i see how the point of a lot of saiki's personality traits flew right over the heads of a lot of fans due to him being an unreliable narrator and a tsundere lol.. so a lot of things he says are immediately proved to be untrue and often just him putting up a front, but some people dont pick up on it..

like i see a lot of "haha saiki would never want to watch a romance movie" guys there is an entire chapter (170) dedicated to him being like "i much prefer mysteries to romance stories.." and then immediately becoming absolutely enamored with a romance story.. he was lying, guys, LMAO

less specific ones include:

"i hate children, they annoy me" *goes out of his way to help kids, comfort them, be kind to them, etc.*

"i only use my powers for self gain/my own convenience." "anyway my mama told me to never use my powers selfishly so i always use them to help people and i try my best not to use them for personal gain<3"

"those guys are so annoying, i would never hang out with them willingly." "yeah it took them about two sentences to convince me to go with them. their thoughts seemed like they really wanted me to go, so i did. i didnt want them to be upset. not that i care about them or anything."

(sorry i post about this kind of thing a lot, i just giggle a lot at how the entire manga is so easily misinterpreted and thousands of people have watched the show but didnt pick up on the main characters most defining character traits and frequent bits.. i think there needs to be a masterlist or something disproving all the extremely common misconceptions about saiki k lol)

ALSO I'm lowkey upset about snatcher having like 2 DLCs revolving around him when if we take in statistics he Is like. A side character. The creators favorited him so much that before I got INTO THE GAME I genuinely thought he was the main villain!!

If you go through her dialogue I guarantee hardly anything she says revolves around doing something simply for herself, like, all she does if for other people around her, and helping the WORLD. HELPING OTHERS.

A Hat in Time is such a WEIRD game.

-Incredible gameplay and platforming

-Charming characters but the story is VERY undercooked and this is a huge detriment to the main antagonist. And yeah you could say the story doesn't really matter but also like. it still really makes the ending weird for the antagonist

-One of the fandoms favourite characters is a character who was scrapped from the game entirely

-There are SO many scrapped characters, and the fandom still plays around with them

-Old development stuff for A Hat in Time is super mysterious and strange due to supposed plot points that were conceptualized which would have implied much darker things

-A program for DLC's to be made by fans for the game was set up years ago, we got one, and then we've heard nothing since then

I say all of this in a /aff /pos way as someone who was in the fandom years ago, AHIT is such a funny thing, one of a kind in how it exists. It looks so average but below the surface is just rabbit hole after rabbit hole

I’ve read SO many fics where Sylus is OOC it’s concerning. People can write what they want, I’m a firm believer in that, but it feels like we aren’t even talking about the same character sometimes. I’ve read fics where Sylus calls reader/mc ‘slut’ during intimacy and I physically recoiled because Sylus would rather die a thousand deaths than call us that. Even if you asked him to he’d double and triple check you actually wanted that and still probably wouldn’t be thrilled to.

Like…genuinely, you can write whatever trope/kink/whatever you want, but if you slap Sylus over it then at least tag it OOC. I read a cheater fic that wasn’t tagged and had a vague summary, and I just had to grimace when I realized that’s what the fic was because Sylus would never in a billion years EVER cheat on us. The same goes for the other Lis. They are designed to love us and only us. They would never be so desperate for sex that they would fucking cheat. ESPECIALLY Sylus, who has stated he’s never been with anyone else. Not to mention, this man doesn’t give a fuck about random flings or one night stands. This man makes love, wants more than anything to just be able to make you feel good and show you how much he loves you. Why do you think he asked for consent multiple times before he dove in, in Nightly Rendezvous? Men like that don’t cheat 😭😭

As for the fic you’re mentioning, I’m glad I haven’t seen it, cause that is just…so far from what Sylus would do 😩 That implies a level of emotional immaturity that Sylus has repeatedly shown he is not down with. He literally encourages us to feel our emotions in a healthy way, and wants to be the safe space where we can feel them without judgment. People like that aren’t going to ghost you out of pettiness, that is just so fundamentally incongruent with how he acts and what he says. I could maybe see Rafayel doing something like that, but even then I don’t think he’d ghost us for DAYS, that is just an insane level of childishness.

Speaking of Rafayel, I read fics of him and Xavier too, even though I’m a Sylus main, and this problem is not nearly as common or consistent in how they are misperceived. Rafayel does get mischaracterized, a lot of people tend to forget how dangerous he can be, but even then I don’t see it as often in fics. And Xavier, I’ve only seen one or two fics where he’s OOC, and usually it’s with the same tropes discussed above.

I think a lot of this issue stems from 1. Infold’s marketing team and 2. Sylus first few interactions with the player in the main story. Unfold framed Sylus as the booktok daddy dom alpha male in his trailer, and a lot of people haven’t been able to look past it to the kind of character he actually is. I also know quite a few people write for Sylus without actually playing the game, which is fine, but again, some OOC tags would be nice 😩 And as for the main story, if you don’t bother to dig any deeper, he does seem like some dark romance dom, but if you look into his lore, especially the dragon myth you can see so clearly just how much pain he is in that you don’t remember him. It breaks my heart replaying those parts now because you can just see the anguish in his eyes that the one person who saw him as more than a monster doesn’t remember him. It’s so fucking sad 😭😭

That being said, I do wish the game did more to address the way Sylus treated us at the start. I’ve read some incredible fics that do, specifically this one, and it’s so fucking good. It holds Sylus accountable while acknowledging how actually romantic and loving he is. That first meeting he wears a mask to hide his pain, and this fic gets it so so right.

As someone who has been writing fanfic for years, a lot of time my fics are almost like a character study, diving into how they would react in different situations, what has motivated them to become the character they are. Sometimes I get stuff OOC too, and I’ll often put little explanations in the notes about why I chose to make them act the way I do, how I came to that conclusion about them. That’s different then blatantly writing them to do and say things they would rather die than say or do for the sake of a kink or trope. Cause that’s what it boils down to most of the time.

I also understand we’re talking about a fictional character, and none of this really matters in the grand scheme of things. But as a fic author myself, it’s painful how much Sylus in particular is twisted into something he just fundamentally isn’t. Why not write for another character at that point? 😭

It’s so clearly misogynistic because woman are always expected to cater to the man. Always expected to make room for his emotions and not get that compassion back. I’ve seen it so often in real life, I just want to tell these woman YOU DESERVE SO MUCH BETTER. And the Lis want to be that better for you. As I wrote in my most recent Sylus fic, he would genuinely be so disappointed if you just rolled over and let him treat you like shit. Like, babes, who hurt you? An intimate partner should not be acting like a child with petty games like that 😭 It reminds me of that video of the guy saying “bitch, what’s for dinner?” to his gf, and when she responds meekly, he tells her to slap him if he ever speaks to her like that. That is Sylus. He’d want you to beat the shit out of him if he ever treated you that way. He loves and respects us way too much to let anyone, including himself, get away with that shit.

ESPECIALLY because i write my own fanfic, characterization is super important to me because if it doesn't feel like the character... what's the point, right? i get that there's a certain level of nuance to each character, and nobody but the creator of said characters is going to get them perfectly correct, but for god's sake sylus was CREATED by infold to love you, to be in love with you. this may just be my take, but having been on the recieving end of that treatment: nobody who truly loves you would ignore you for something so inconsequential to sylus as a buisness meeting or whatever. (i have two specific fics in mind but i don't want to reference them speficially because i'm genuinely not trying to call out anyone in particular)

writing fanfic is really hard, esp when it comes to characterization, but i feel like in a game where these guys are SPECIFICALLY love interests it's like... guys the writing is on the walls, the floor, the cieling, and a sticky note duct taped to your forehead. it's so easy. for other fandoms, where it's not focused on love interests it's harder to be like 'x wouldn't act like this', so i will 100% give those people grace. but if i wrote something for sylus, (winkwinknudgenudge) i feel like! it would be pretty easy, given how we are GIVEN A MANUAL ON HOW HE TREATS THE PERSON HE LOVES.

and lastly: as i said, writing sylus so that he expects the reader to come crawling back to him after dogshit treatment and having the reader do exactly that, is misogynistic. i'm sorry, it has to be said.
