So many people -- especially cis men -- not understanding why Elisabeth takes the Substance in the first place, and then continues to take it, despite Sue destroying her/them, is really frustrating for me to see.

Listen. If you make a video essay or write an analysis or whatever, but you don't understand possibly the most important theme of the entire movie, then maybe... do more research first and don't just continue to say everything about said theme is "stupid" because you fail to understand it. That is stupid.

Elisabeth is plagued by intense self-hatred that's been fuelled and made worse by outside forces; i.e. comments made about her age, body, importance, and worth -- and how all of that depends on her being young and sexy; but also just the general misogyny in our society and the industry she works in. People, who have been assigned female at birth, are confronted with that kind of misogyny from day one, essentially.

And Elisabeth is so desparate in the movie, so full of raging hatred toward her own ageing body that she'd do absolutely anything to "go back" and continue to live the life she's known best and felt "most comfortable (worthy)" with. Thus, the Substance is the very real chance she gets to do that with. It works well at first, until "Sue" becomes too greedy, for the lack of a better word.

Here's the thing where most people get confused, despite how much the movie emphasises it.

Elisabeth and Sue are one. They are still the same person, simply split into two bodies, but with one singular consciousness, which basically goes from one body to the other week after week. They both experience the same things every week, but are so dissociated from the "other self" that to some people it may seem like they aren't actually the same person, because Sue often doesn't seem to remember exactly what Elisabeth did during her week, and vice versa.

To me, that's not as confusing because I deal with dissociation myself, and my understanding of it here would be that Elisabeth's self-hatred forces this kind of dissociation between her true self and Sue, who is the perfect version of herself. She's so focused on Sue being perfect and better than her "true self" that they've become different people in her mind.

In her own mind, she can't associate Sue with herself, with Elisabeth, because she -- as Elisabeth -- is nothing like Sue (anymore) and could never be her. Elisabeth, now, only exists to further Sue. To keep Sue alive and successful and living her dream, Elisabeth needs to exist. But that's all the purpose she really has now. Of course, yes, she tried to actually live a normal life as Elisabeth in the beginning, but she was unhappy and couldn't do it because this self-hatred had gotten the best of her. All the time, she could only anticipate to be Sue again and continue to live her "true life".

This kind of self-hatred is incredibly vicious. Every chance Elisabeth had to go back to being just her, she couldn't take it. Even when she ended up terminating Sue, she regretted it and tried to reverse it, which ended in her death.

Self-hatred is not logical, and it can and does alter somebody's perception of themselves and the world around them so much that it can and does result in that person's death, be that figurative or literal. Unless, of course, that person gets the help they need. But for that, they'd have to actually admit that something is "wrong", and also be ready to change things.

I think it says a lot about how necessary a movie like this is when so many people misunderstand it, despite being so obvious with everything it's trying to say. A lot of people have complained about The Substance not being a subtle movie, yet at the same time, those people are most often the ones, who question Elisabeth's motivations and don't understand the most important theme of the movie -- self-hatred.

First time read through light novel vol. 8. Random thoughts.

...So...does anyone else feel a little uncomfortable with that cover image between Reinhard and Felt? I mean, I know he's not going to do anything sexual to her and she's not as young as I originally thought she was (I think vol. 1 said she was 15, while ever since the anime I thought she was like 10 or something), but she still is underage, being forced into wearing and doing something she doesn't want to by a grown man, and I think just the way he's got his hand holding her bare thigh makes it feel more sexual than it should be.

Also, is Wilhelm floating? The heck is he sitting on?

Subaru was afraid of death. Dying constantly trashed his life with an unbearable sense of fear and loss. He thought it was like that for everyone; he assumed that was how it had to be. Subaru, who had experienced death more than anyone via Return by Death, didn’t want anyone else to know what it was like.

I'm definitely seeing more similarities between Subaru and Ferris here than I did in the anime. I like how they both have a more unique perspective on life and death than most people would; Subaru from his Return By Death and Ferris from being such a powerful healer (to the point he can even regenerate himself from near death, I guess). Again, for a series where death can be undone so easily, it really knows how to use that premise to show just how weighty and serious death is. While the two will and do kill, it sits with them more than it does for others because they know just how awful death can be.

Something I've really enjoyed when reading through various LN series after watching the anime first is that I end up liking certain characters that I didn't in the anime. I didn't hate Ferris but the cutesy way he talked really bugged me and I didn't focus on him much. Here though I'm definitely getting a better feel for his character, especially with how much he values life, cursing at the suicidal witch cult members for tossing theirs away so easily. He and Subaru's back and forth makes the ending feel that much more heartbreaking when Ferris has to mercy kill the possessed Subaru.

Also, just to clear up any confusion I have, is Ferris in drag or does he identify as a woman? I don't have any problem referring to him from now on as a "she" (I never had that problem with Magne in My Hero Academia) but I'd prefer to get my facts straight. Ferris also makes a joke about Subaru swinging over to his side of the fence but I'm not sure if that means he's gay or not. It's a little hard to tell how far his affection for Crusch runs, for example.

Similarly, there's Julius, a character I never disliked in the anime, but I can definitely see more of a path to him and Subaru becoming friends here. It is funny that a comment from Ferris got me thinking how something to two have in common is how easy it is for them to get others to immediately dislike them just by talking. For Subaru it's because he too often talks without thinking, shoving his foot into his mouth, and for Julius it's how unintentionally snobbish and "better-than-you" he can sound. It's also nice that the story is getting Subaru to try and work through his issues, acknowledging that he's being unfair towards Julius, whom really has done nothing wrong aside from unintentionally pricking at Subaru's inferiority complex.

Like Subaru, I thought demon beasts and monsters were just so common in the world that a barrier around a lord's domain was a very common thing. But from how the other characters in-story are talking, it sounds like Roswaal deliberately put his domain and the village in the center of (or at least nearby) a demon beast habitat. Even in the anime I always believed he knew more than he let on but here he feels like a straight-up mastermind with everything he's been pulling behind the scenes and all the things he's done that, as of yet, have no explanation or reason behind them. Just what is he up to?

One thing I'll say about this series in comparison to some others I've seen/read; the dark magic here, like with the Witch of Envy, Return By Death, the White Whale, and the Unseen Hands, really feels like DARK magic. I've seen series that have their own version of dark magic that'll make bad things happen or summon demons or sacrifice people, but this? Everything to do with the witch feels creepy and unnatural, like it's not or should not be part of the world. With how much suffering it's caused, the mystery behind the gospel, just how unhinged Petelgeuse is and his body jumping, it all feels like stuff you should really not be messing with. Even at the end with Subaru running off and Julius finding him, getting no response at first from Subaru, feels like something out of a horror movie.

Subaru keeps getting asked if he's Pride, to which I'm assuming they mean if he's the one to become the Archbishop of Pride. Personally, my theory is that because of how much the witch seems to "favor" him, Subaru is Envy, like, well, the Witch of Envy and the only one of the seven sins they never mention to have an archbishop, given Satella destroyed the other witches. If that's the case, I can only imagine how much that's going to piss off all the other archbishops, that after all their shows of devotion some schmuck came to their world out of nowhere and became Satella's favorite.

Obviously this is meant primarily for Subaru but I can't help but think it can apply to Rem and Emilia as well. With the exception of Puck, Emilia tends to go out of her way to avoid involving others in her problems or having them feel they owe her anything when she helps with theirs. Rem dedicated a good chunk of her life to live as her sister's replacement after Ram lost her horn and tried to kill all the demon dogs on her own after Subaru was cursed saving her. They both seem determined to bear the weight of their burdens solely on their own, like they're the only ones who need to suffer. Subaru goes back and forth on how much he involves others in his problems, but while he's more than willing to help ease the burdens on others, his problem for the longest time was that he was so fixated on "swinging his sword", as he thought fighting and strength was the only way to help (probably because strength would honestly solve a decent chunk of his own problems).

Thereupon, an armed group appeared bearing the crest of the House of Karsten, which had declared war with the blank letter... Ram, I had no idea how much I missed you until you came back.

Namely, that someone out there had swapped his letter of goodwill, aiming to turn Emilia and Crusch against each other.

I don't think a line or speculation like this was in the anime, which it probably should have been. Without it, it just seems like Subaru's an idiot and made a stupid mistake, but now it seems like someone is directly manipulating events behind the scenes. Personally, I'd say my money's on Roswaal if I didn't have terrible luck when it comes to gambling.

Overlord was the first light novel series I read (the only other LN I'd read before was Death Note: Another Note - The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases and that was years ago), so naturally it's the series I tend to make the most comparisons to for the other series I've been reading. In this case, something I really like about both Ainz and Subaru is that, despite how they're presented sometimes, neither is actually stupid (though they too often suck at reading the room). They're both just in situations way over their head and they have no frame of reference for how to deal with these fantasy world situations. Subaru, like with tricking Sloth into getting attacked by demon beast or figuring out what was up with the flowers, has plenty of times where he shows he can come up with decent plans or quick thinking that can pull off a win. His flaws are based more in his own immaturity and need to grow more as a person.

Honestly, Ainz and Subaru are fun to compare because, of the LN MCs I've read so far, they both seem to get every break the other doesn't. Ainz is obvious. He's got actual power, tons of resources, and numerous people whose faith in him is absolute, while Subaru has almost nothing save for the curse and the clothes on his back and has to continuously struggle to make any difference. On the other hand, Ainz has no one in his life he can relate to or be his real self around, making him feel incredibly empty and lonely, while Subaru has attracted a surprisingly wide web of people around him whom, despite some hiccups, do genuinely believe in the real him.

I am 90% certain Emilia and Puck fighting Sloth wasn't in the anime. Well, no wonder anime-only fans have trouble liking her when you cut out nearly all of the character's best sh*t! [Edit: I was wrong. Another post pointed out it was at the end of ep 23. Like I said, it's been a bit since I saw the anime and I remembered none of this fight. Though I still stand by that LN Emilia is better than anime Emilia] Like I've said before, it's not like anime Emilia could just be replaced with a sexy lamp and nothing would be different, but compared to the LN version she really didn't get a lot to do in the anime outside of the first arc. She wants to be queen and sometimes heals people. Otherwise she was mostly off-screen or serving as Subaru's object of affection (and sometimes obsession). Just being able to fight isn't everything but Emilia here certainly feels like she has a lot more fire to her personality and does more when she appears. She's not just a nice, pretty girl for the MC to fight for.

Is this Satella saying this to Subaru? I'd assume so since it ends with the "I love you" line Subaru's been getting before he RBDs. But if so, why is she saying this to him? One theory is that she has her own regrets from her life and is giving Subaru a chance not to have the same. That assumes she is a good person and that the stories around her are wrong. Another theory, given the Witch of Envy title, is that she's insisting Subaru never let go of what's his. It's his (and hers, since he is hers) and no one else can have it. I mean, that applies more to greed than envy, I suppose, but stretching a bit you could say she'd be jealous of a world moving on without her.

So whew that’s a big question. Do I honestly think that Dave kept Obi Wan and Padmé and then Anakin and Satine from interacting in the TCW show because they didn’t want shipping wars?

(Remember, these are all just my personal opinions. I do me and you do you!)

Short version? Yes and no. Long version? Under the cut because I can never shut up.

Firstly, I don’t wanna say this was all Dave’s decision. He was one of the top guys in charge of TCW, yes, but he was far from the only one, there was an entire creative team working on the project, and during the time of TCW’s original six seasons Lucasfilms was not owned by Disney yet and George Lucas himself had a very large amount of creative control over the entire show. So I don’t really think it’s fair at all to point fingers at any choices the show made and go “yep that’s completely 100% Dave’s fault alone”.

I also don’t quite think they were concerned about shipping wars in the way ATLA had them. Avatar’s shipping wars were so absolutely toxically rancid that they legit drove me right out of that fandom. I’m still hesitant to come back during the current renaissance because of them. Star Wars, prior to the Sequel Trilogy, never had shipping wars close to that calibre of pure nastiness. The fandom was a godawful cesspool that fought to the death on most aspects of the franchise, this has always been true, but shipping, if I’ve read right, was somehow never really one of those hot button issues within fandom. I don’t think Lucasfilms kept the Clone Wars four apart because they were afraid of fans fighting over ships.

That being said, Lucasfilms HAS always been Very Strict on how they want their characters to be seen, romantic-wise, way back to when they would terrorize Original Trilogy slash shippers back in the 80’s and 90’s with threats of legal action. It’s part of why they were Very Firm in their insistence that they had absolutely nothing to do with all the Luke/Mara Jade EU stuff. You either abided by LF’s canonical romances or not at all in their world. So yes, in the case of Obi Wan and Padmé, I absolutely think the writing team’s decision to keep the pair of them apart was almost entirely so fans didn’t ship them together.

Why do I think this? Because there is no other rational reason why Obi Wan and Padmé haven’t had a single second of screentime in TCW that hasn’t had either Anakin or Satine also in the room as a buffer. Not when Revenge of the Sith EXPLICITLY portrays their relationship as relatively close friends who care about each other. So nope, I genuinely think the show just doesn’t want the fans to consider any other relationship for Padmé besides Anakin.

But why would they do this just to her and Obes? Obi Wan and Padmé both have other friends of different genders, why don’t they worry about us shipping THEM? Well for Obi Wan’s case, it can be excused that he flirts with everyone, so we’re conditioned to think that it’s never anything serious, and none of the other characters are married to the main character of the series. This is entirely because of Padmé’s position. Yes, she has other male friends, but either they’re nonhuman and not conventionally attractive so the series doesn’t see them as a threat, they’re Clovis, who they actively show Anakin going into a jealous fit over, or they’re Bail, who can be excused by the fact that he’s already married and also because he’s never actively shown as in competition with Anakin for anything, so he’s not threatening either.

Obi Wan, on the other hand, is a major threat to Anidala in the show’s eyes. They already constantly make a point to compare him and Anakin in almost every opportunity. Which is strange, the show’s decision to force them into the role of narrative foils to each other when in the movies that isn’t the case at all— Obi Wan is much more of a foil to Sidious and Anakin’s foil is Luke —but yeah, the show very often has Obes and Ani going through similar situations with competing viewpoints— ESPECIALLY their canon romances, and I won’t rant about how the show’s attempted Anidala and Obitine parallels fall apart under scrutiny right now but if yinz want the rant sometime let me know.

Obi Wan also has the canonical ability to charm the pants off of literally everyone he meets. Nearly everyone in canon is in love with him, 80% of the fandom at least is in love with him, and I KNOW most of the crew was in love with him too. Anakin, on the other hand, has a very abrasive personality and is much easier to dislike. The show was ALREADY terrified of the fans not liking or wanting to root for Anakin to the point that they reworked his entire personality to make him more palatable to his critics from the movies. Plus, Obidala fans already existed! Since the first and second PT movies, a big group of people already shipped these two because they already thought Obi Wan was a preferable match to Padmé than Anakin. The studio did not want to encourage this.

So yes, I think it was a combination of the show’s tendency to already try and get the fans to compare Obi Wan to Anakin for everything else plus their insecurity in Anakin’s image and likeability as it was, that they did Not want the handsome charming not-future-evil guy around the leading lady and threatening her canon romance by existing as a possibly better option. So Obi Wan and Padmé got no stories together, just kinda throwing the opening ROTS left them in the garbage ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The worst part is, there is so many potential places in TCW where Obi Wan and Padmé could talk to each other, like during her investigation into her friend’s murder, during the Clovis arc, bits during the Malevolence arc, the earlier Naboo crisis arcs, even the one time where she’s just hosting a damn party and wants to invite her friends gahhhhhhhh

Anakin and Satine, I also think yes, but this is also a case of half and half because Satine isn’t nearly as major a character as the other three are, and out of the nine episodes she appears in, she only has more than a singular line in seven of them, and out of those seven, only two of them aren’t revolves entirely around building her relationship with Obi Wan. So really, there is a defence for the writers here in noting that there’s not as much room to explore Satine’s character as it is, let alone trying to shoehorn in a scene with Anakin.

Except no, I’m not gonna give them that defence because in the two episodes where she only has a speaking line or less— Obi Wan’s funeral and the Ahsoka and Lux meet Death Watch ep —I can already easily think of ways she and Anakin could have really meaningful interactions in them both. Y’all have already heard my bit on how they could have a real important conversation at the funeral, but y’all HAVEN’T seen my idea for a rewrite of the Carlac ep where it’s a two-parter, Anakin comes with Ahsoka and Padmé to the negotiations on Mandalore, and it ends up with a subplot of Anidala chasing after Ahsoka and Lux with Satine as the put-upon third wheel and we get foreshadowing to Satine being Bo Katan’s sister, so when the reveal happens the next season it actually means something.

So yeah, it was partially because of timing constraints, but it was also DEFINITELY in part because they didn’t want Satine being shipped with Anakin— which ppffffft, if they were brave enough to actually try writing these two in a conversation in-character, they’d understand how much of a not-worry this would be xD —because the show is set on the fact that despite maybe there being other flings at some point, Obi Wan and Satine are each other’s one true tragic love (Or, at least Obi Wan is Satine’s. He’s always had more freedom and decision than she has in this narrative, and that’s always kinda bugged me). So, that means Satine can’t interact with any men unless they’re gonna betray her trust and try to kill her by the end of the episode, because the show needs Obi Wan to have a loyal, steady, good girlfriend because he is a good man.

(And yes, before anyone says it, I have heard the more unpleasant rumors behind why exactly Obi Wan was given a girlfriend in the show, but as I’ve yet to see any official proof of them besides fandom salt, I’m not gonna spread them because those are hefty accusations to throw around).

So yeah, Satine can’t talk to Anakin partially because time constraints, but also because she isn’t allowed to talk to any other nice men besides Obi Wan and her son (no I don’t particularly like the Korkie Kenobi thing, but it is blatantly obvious that that is what the show was implying and I’m not gonna pretend otherwise), and Obi Wan and Padmé can’t talk to each other entirely because the show saw Obidala as a threat to Anidala.

Again, just my opinions and things I noticed, y’all are more than free to disagree and discuss with me.

Aw, thank you. Well I’ll do a meta, because I’m lazy and it takes more time and effort to do a gifset than to write a meta haha. 

When it comes to Ron/Hermione vs Harry/Hermione, it’s not an easy choice for me. Mainly because I love the three of them as best friends and enjoy the friendships within the dynamic more than the romances. But, if I’m being honest about what’s true in my heart, I do have a preference to Harry and Hermione. 

Now, I, like 99% of 90s kids out there in the world adore Harry Potter. I grew up reading it and watching it, it’s part of who I am and I love everything about it. But when it comes to JK Rowling’s choice of ships, I’m not a big fan and disagree with most of her choices in romantic ships. Most of them feel lazy as though she just threw two main characters together because she wanted them to find love and didn’t want to write in a new character specifically for that purpose, but there’s just no genuine connection or potential there. 

When it comes to Ron and Hermione, I don’t think it was lazy per se, but I think it’s a pairing that was forced for the wrong reasons. I think JK thought it would be a huge cliche to have the main hero (Harry) and main heroine (Hermione) fall in love, so instead she decided to be “edgy” and have the main heroine fall in love with the underdog instead. And that’s not me hating on Ron at all, because I love him, it’s just a fact. Harry is the main protagonist and although Ron is a hero in his own right who is just as worthy as Harry, the fact remains that he was the underdog and that’s why he was constantly portrayed as feeling insecure and inferior to Harry. Now, there’s no problem with JK choosing to put Ron and Hermione together instead of Harry and Hermione (I actually think it’s a great idea), but the problem I do have with it is that she still wrote Harry and Hermione to be perfect for each other and Ron and Hermione so wrong for each other. 

What I always had an issue with when it comes to Ron and Hermione is the tension when they first met and their incompatibilities that I just see as being too big to ignore. So with the first, I understand that it’s a typical thing for young kids that have a crush on each other to pick on each other or dislike each other as a way to deny or suppress their real feelings, but I just don’t like it as a trope. I don’t think it’s the right way to start a friendship between two people that are going to be together for the rest of their lives. 

The second is a much bigger issue for me and probably the main reason I’ve never been able to fully get on-board with Ron and Hermione as a couple. They were just so incompatible. I know there’s that old cliche of “opposites attract” but honestly, in my opinion, it’s bullshit. Being different in certain areas and having conflicting personalities is okay, but there are some things that a couple need to be compatible in for the relationship to work. Ron and Hermione were from completely different worlds, they had different motivations, ambitions and ways of thinking. Hermione was very driven by intellectual pursuits, she was ambitious and highly intelligent, but Ron never cared much for academic achievement and was much more homely, traditional and concerned with having a nice family home (much like his own growing up). Now it’s not wrong to be either of these people, but when you put two people together who have such conflicting hopes and dreams for their future, it’s very problematic. Ron was the sort of person that would be intimated by Hermione’s achievements and insecure about her reaching her full potential. Hermione was the sort of person that would be irritated by Ron’s lack of motivation, ambition and his immaturity. On top of this, Hermione and Ron couldn’t communicate for anything and whenever they had a conflict or problem they often took to ignoring or avoiding one another rather than facing it and talking it out (let’s not forget that Ron also did this with Harry in GOF, so it’s clear Ron’s ability to open up was not great). Like honestly, Ron and Hermione living together 24/7, building a life together and being together until they die is ridiculous. They irritated each other constantly throughout the seven books and although it was often played off as being humorous, in reality, it’s a huge red flag for their relationship. It’s normal for couples to bicker and argue, but for Ron and Hermione it would be relentless and never ending and eventually it would lead to the crumbling of their relationship. And as if this wasn’t enough, Ron’s jealousy and inferiority about Hermione and Harry is the perfect example of how their relationship wouldn’t work. If Ron was that jealous about Hermione and his own best friend (who he should trust more than anyone else in the world) how would he have felt to see Hermione develop a friendship with a male colleague? Ron’s own insecurity and jealousy would’ve swallowed him whole and drove Hermione away. 

To put it simply, Ron was not Hermione’s type and Hermione was not Ron’s type. Ron found Hermione snobby, nerdy, arrogant and swotty and Hermione found Ron immature, unintelligent, shallow and simple. Ron just wouldn’t be enough to keep Hermione stimulated and excited and happy, just like Hermione wouldn’t be the sweet housewife and mother he wanted her to be, just like Molly was. 

I have no problem at all with romantic Ron and Hermione in the short term, but in the long term it’s just not right. Ron and Hermione were two characters that developed a very strong and profound friendship, that had a crush on each other that when coupled with their friendship developed into real feelings. It was right for them to act on those feelings and to be together, but it didn’t make any sense for them to marry and have children. In my eyes, it would’ve only been a matter of months (maybe a couple of years) for them to realise they weren’t compatible as a couple and mutually decide to remain friends, just like Joey and Rachel on Friends. 

Now, we move onto Harry and Hermione. How I feel about them is tricky, because I’m not sure I would’ve wanted a romance to happen between them, but at the same time, I just think, “Why not? Why shouldn’t they be together?”, because they were so good together. Unlike Ron, who actually took a disliking to Hermione in the beginning and constantly put her down, Harry was always open to her and saw the good in her. I think Harry got Hermione in ways that Ron didn’t and he accepted her for who she was rather than criticising her. Harry admired and respected Hermione’s intelligence, analytical thinking, organisational approach and out spoken ways. He loved her for it because it was who she was and he never judged her for it. Similarly, where Hermione complained about Ron, she seemed to adore everything about Harry. It sounds awful to say, but I think that Hermione probably saw in Harry some of the things she wished she could have seen in Ron. I don’t know if I just misinterpret how Hermione saw Ron, but I always felt like she thought of him as a foolish child and I just never saw that she really loved or respected him the way she did Harry. And in all the ways that Ron and Hermione are incompitble, Harry and Hermione don’t have that same problem. Whilst Harry may not have been as intelligent as Hermione, he was more so than Ron and he was more able to engage with Hermione in intellectual discussion; Harry was more ambitious and driven like Hermione; he was confident and self-assured in who he was as a person and he was accepting of Hermione’s flaws. Harry and Hermione had an inherent understanding, mutual respect and love for one another that made for a much stronger basis for a romantic relationship than that of Ron and Hermione. They were equals, they were matched and Harry would’ve never felt insecure or inferior next to Hermione, just like Hermione would’ve never felt held back or suppressed by Harry. 

I don’t like to say it because I feel like it’s shitting over Ron if I do, but Harry and Hermione were the hero and heroine of the story, and Ron was the sidekick. The expression, “Three’s a crowd” is true in most contexts. There just wasn’t room for JKR to make Harry, Hermione and Ron equal heroes (though she tried) and it was always obvious to me that it was about Harry and Hermione to an extent. Even as a child I remember questioning why it always seemed to be Harry and Hermione that were left together to save the day (this is particularly more prevalent in the movies) and it’s because they were the hero and heroine. 

JKR herself even admitted that Harry and Hermione should’ve ended up together. I know there’s been so much debate amongst the fandom about exactly what she meant about what she said and how Harry/Hermione shippers twisted her words, but it’s so clear that she regrets choosing to keep Ron and Hermione together. And the reason for that is because she did it solely because  she didn’t want to go with the obvious ending of having Harry and Hermione together. But that begs the question, if it was so obvious to readers that Harry and Hermione should have ended up together isn’t that just proof that their relationship was better developed and that they were perfect for one another? 

In the end, I’m a strong believer that neither Harry/Hermione nor Ron/Hermione should’ve developed into a romance (although if I had to choose, I’d choose Harry/Hermione). I feel like it’s such a common and overused trope for best friends to end up together and a lot of the time it’s just laziness on the writer’s part, because they can’t be bothered to create a new character or develop a recurring character to be the love interest of a main character. So instead, they just put the main characters with each other instead. As I mentioned at the start of this, I feel like that’s what JKR did with pretty much all of her endgame ships and it’s why I’m not a huge fan of any of them and prefer the friendships.

Sarah Butler is nothing short of hardcore in the role of Jennifer in the remake of I Spit On Your Grave. The original version of this film, released in 1978, sparked a great deal of controversy.  Some viewed the film as a powerful feminist movie that dealt with rape and male sexual violence against women.  Others viewed it as exploitative and unnecessarily violent.  The film was actually banned in many countries until the late 90s.  Sarah Butler plays the role of Jennifer Hills, a writer who decides to spend the summer alone in a cabin to try to get some work done and is brutally raped, attacked and left for dead by a group of men.  Hills’ reaction to this attack was revenge and she went from being a victim to going on a killing/torture rampage against her attackers.  Butler took on this challenging role with courage and versatility and transitioned from being a victim to being an avenger seamlessly.  I was able to talk to Butler about the experience of filming I Spit On Your Grave, the challenges of playing the role of Jennifer, and Meir Zarchi’s motivation for creating the original movie.

Are you a big horror movie fan?

Ahh...the dreaded question.  I'm actually not.   Not that I dislike horror movies, I've just never watched very many.  I get really scared watching them.   Would you like to act in more horror movies in the future?

Definitely.  It would have to be the right role, and the right timing, but I think horror movies can be really fun to shoot.   Being in a horror film seems like it could be pretty emotionally, as well as physically, draining.  Was that the case for your while filming I Spit on Your Grave?

It was more the case with this film than almost every other horror movie out there.  I know that's a bold statement, but I'm sticking by it.  Portraying a character who is humiliated, tortured, and gang raped was the most physically and emotionally draining experience of my life.  And then I had to turn it around and become the avenger, which required just as much effort.  To hold onto that intense rage through the shooting of all the revenge scenes was so unnatural for me.  It really took it out of me.  I went home to visit my family in Washington for thanksgiving afterwards and immediately came down with the flu because my body and mind were so exhausted.   This was your first time being the lead actress in a movie. Were you nervous?  What was it like preparing for the role?

Yes, it was.  And yes, I was nervous.  But I was resolved to do my best, and I had been preparing for a chance like this for a long time, so I knew what I needed to do to carry the film.   Hopefully I pulled it off.  The crazy part was that I didn't really have much time to prep.  I was cast and left for Louisiana to shoot two weeks later.  Unfortunately, when you're that down to the wire, it's hard to make time to prepare for your role.  I pretty much shut myself off to my friends and used every spare moment I had to go over the script.     What would be your dream role to play?

If I could compare to a role that's already been played, Elizabeth Swan from Pirates of the Caribbean.  I love fantasy and adventure films, so that kind of thing is right up my alley.   Also, Keira Knightly got to be beautiful, feminine, smart, emotional, but also, a bad-ass pirate chick!  I'm jealous.  I've heard there's a Hansel and Gretel project out there, and I've got my eye on that.  It sounds like it's going to be amazing.   Before being cast, had you ever seen the original I Spit on Your Grave movie?

Not before being cast, but once I was cast I ran right out and rented it.  The guy at the movie rental shop, a tiny, non-corporate place that went out of business about a month later, went to the back and found it for me.  He was reading the back of the DVD case as he walked up to me, and then he said "I think I'll watch this when you return it.  It looks funny."  I was like, "Dude, I don't think so.  But yeah, watch it!"  It was definitely NOT a funny movie.   The original film stirred up quite a bit of controversy.  Some people thought of it as a feminist film, some thought of it as brutally and unnecessarily violent.  What are your views of the film?  

Well, it was the beginning of a great opportunity for me, so I can't say a bad thing about it.  It gave me the greatest role of my career so far, and for that I will be forever grateful to Meir Zarchi.  I understand every point of view regarding this film.  I can definitely say it's not for everyone.  But it helps to know why this film was made in the first place.  Meir was living in New York City in the mid 70s, and one night, or very early morning, he was driving through central park on his way home.  A woman, naked, bloody, beaten, and almost dead stumbled into the road in front of him, screaming for help.  She had been brutally attacked and raped by multiple men.  Meir put her in the car, took her to the hospital, and then wondered for many months after what she must have gone through emotionally after that terrorizing experience.  I think his original film explored the darkest fantasies of violated women.  As humans, it is part of our natural healing process to dream of revenge, even though most would never really attempt it.  If you can accept this film as a very honest depiction of a sad reality of society, that women are attacked and raped, then maybe it should even be praised for bringing light to a subject that is normally kept in the dark.  Women who are violated in this way shouldn't be ashamed to come forward and seek justice for their attackers.     Do you think that playing the character Jennifer made you have a different outlook on the movie than if you were just someone watching the movie from a totally outside perspective?

Of course!  Totally!  I would have most likely never watched this film, or the original, if I hadn't been cast in it. I probably would have been part of the masses that immediately dismiss it as exploitation without even watching a frame.  That's ignorant.   Becoming Jennifer absolutely brought the subject closer to home and created some of my stronger opinions about it.   The original version of this movie features a good deal of nudity.  How was nudity handled in your version of the film?  How comfortable or uncomfortable were you with it?

Yes, there was an awful lot of nudity in the original, which probably contributed to getting it labeled as "exploitation".  I truly believe that although there is full nudity in our film--and not too sparsely either--there is not one exploitative frame featuring my nude body.  There is a wipe up my midsection as I get out of my car fully clothed in one of the first scenes of the film, and I joked with the other cast members that that shot is the most exploitative in the whole film.  It's true though, when I'm naked, never for a second is it sexy.  It is heartbreaking and sickening, and my skin is shown just enough to evoke the sense of pity that is necessary, and nothing more.  Meeting my director, Steven, for the first time, completely eased my fears about the nudity in this film.  He is such a good man, a family man, and a very normal guy.  So when it came time to shoot these scenes, I felt very comfortable knowing that he would use nudity in only the most necessary and respectful ways.  He outdid my expectations.  He handled it exquisitely.   How does your version of I Spit on Your Grave differ from the original movie?

The biggest change is my revenge on the men.   We've lengthened it, and added some torture elements to even out the cause and effect sides of the movie, and to give the audience something to cheer about in the second half.  It worked!  I don't use my sexuality to avenge the men.  In the original, Camille Keaton's Jennifer actually slept with some of the men before killing them.  Just about everyone on the production team was opposed to this, so instead of sex, I use twisted mind games and rusty gardening tools.  Other than that, we've added a character, a sheriff, played by the brilliant Andrew Howard, and updated the look of the film through the amazing hand-held stylings of Neil Lisk, our director of photography/camera operator.   What were some of the things you did to prepare for your role in this movie?  Did you do any special research?  Any special physical training?

I didn't have time.  But I did practice going to very dark places, almost animalistic, to prepare for portraying the post-rape Jennifer.  Living in the woods, and a very creepy abandoned old house with no windows, doors, electricity or plumbing I think anyone would turn a little strange, not to mention the emotional hell Jennifer went though during that time.   Where was the movie filmed?  Is there anything interesting that you can share about the environment or the set where the movie was filmed?

The movie was filmed in beautiful Shreveport, Louisiana.  There are lots of films being shot out there because of the amazing tax benefits to production studios.  There were at least three others while we were there.  But our film actually should have been made there regardless.  Everything from the run-down houses and trailers of the rapists to the beautifully haunting swamplands were absolutely perfect for the look of our film.  The one location that really sticks out to me is the shack, as we called it, or the abandoned house I performed my revenge in.  That place really gave everyone the willies.   It was very cold inside and genuinely had a bad vibe to it, almost like you could tell something really bad had gone down there.  When the crew was setting up they found dozens of children's shoes out back in the shrubs and vines.  Some of the local crew said they might remember something in the news back in the 60s about a child molester in the area.  I didn't like being there, but I have to admit, sitting in that environment probably helped bring out some of the darkest parts of my nature.   Whose idea was it to remake this movie?  How did the idea come about?

I wasn't really around for that part, but as far as I know, Cinetel films acquired the rights to the original a couple years ago.  Apparently, many had tried to buy the rights from Meir Zarchi over the years, but he didn't trust any of them until he met Lisa Hansen.     Are you currently working on any other projects?  Is there anything exciting you have in the works that you would like to share with our readers?

I wish I could say yes, but I'm currently just waiting for the right next thing to come my way.  I've had some offers but nothing that strays too far from this film.  I started my career with a huge challenge (this film), and I want to keep up that trend.   I'm not interested in fluffy roles, or roles that are too similar to ones I've already played.  Maybe I'm being too picky, but I'm sure something will come soon and sweep me off my feet.   How did you get involved in acting?  Do you have any formal training?

I've been doing it since I was about 10 years old, in my driveway with my best friend putting on plays for our parents, in school plays, and later community theater.  I moved from Washington State to Los Angeles at 18 to major in theater at the University of Southern California.  I left there to act as Belle at Disneyland, and left that to seriously pursue an acting career in Hollywood.  I've taken classes with some of the best, including Lesly Kahn and Harry Mastrogeorge.  It is my life, and I will continuously be studying it.

The following is a slightly edited version of a youtube comment I left on the most recent Winter Games video,  NETFLIX AND CHILL 80'S EDITION (Smosh Winter Games). I needed to get this off of my chest after seeing people ATTACK Boze for not knowing a movie, and attempting to be funny. I also felt like it needed to be said here as well, if only to spread the message further.

Alright, after looking through these goddamn comments, I need to vent. 

Why the fuck is this fandom so hateful? Like seriously, do you guys have no compassion? No respect for the people who spend their lives churning out this content for you ungrateful and hateful fucks? I am actually ASHAMED to be a part of this group about 90% of the time. I cant look in a fucking comment section on any video without being completely overwhelmed with negativity and cruelty. 

Every smosh games video: "This person sucks, please fire them" "Where is Ian and Anthony? The vids are shit without them" "Smosh games is so bad, they should just stop" 

 Every second channel video: "Smosh went to shit when the squad joined" "I miss the good days when it was Ian and Anthony" "This person is annoying and painfully unfunny, they shouldn't be here" 

Every smosh vid with the squad: "I miss when Ian and Anthony were here" "Why are these other people here? They arent smosh" "These skits arent funny, they should stop having these people" 

Every smosh vid with Ian and Anthony: "This reminds me of when they used to be good" "They should only make these videos and stop with the squad" "These guys are so much better than the squad" 

And now, every winter games video is just hate on Boze. 

 And you know what? I'm fucking sick and tired of it. 

I'm suprised Smosh didn't disable comments a long time ago. They contribute no actual feedback, no support. It's just a bunch of whiny, bitter shitheads screaming about Ian and Anthony and hating on the content that they have the PRIVALEGE to consume for absolutely free. Really, it feels like half the 'fans' only come to the videos to moan and bitch about how much they hate the 'new' smosh. If you hate these wonderful people, this free content that they put their blood sweat and tears into, the work that they love and enjoy and put forth to try to make you happy, THEN DONT FUCKING WATCH IT. 

 Don't you have anything else to do with your life than to scream about and shit on people who are trying their hardest to make you smile? Don't you have anything you would rather do than to tell these creators that their work is awful, or means nothing to you? What sort of enjoyment do you get from putting other people down? 

 And if you actually like watching content, think about it. Suppose they fired every person that people think are annoying. Who would be left? There are always people who have senses of humor that you dont relate to. GET OVER IT. 

Ian and Anthony, smosh games, and the squad make this content because they genuinely enjoy it. They cancel shows because they don't like making them anymore. They create new shows or bring on new people because they WANT TO, and like working on/with them. If they brought back all the shows you like that they cancelled, or stopped doing the shows you personally dislike, they would not enjoy their work. The content is good because they put their all into it, because they are having fun and want to share that with you. If they didn't like the content they produced, it would not be nearly as good, because they just don't really enjoy it. And what would you do then? You would complain. Just like everything else, you would complain about the content not being as good. 

You people are NEVER happy. And I am tired of it. I regret scrolling down on any video, because all I see is negativity and hatred. Why can't you take notes from Markiplier's fans? From Jacksepticeye's fans? Why can't you accept that people change, that content changes, and that it isn't the end of the fucking world if literally anything isn't exactly to your liking? You're a bunch of ungrateful bullies and brats. 

And yes, I know there are good people here. I've seen funny and supportive comments. The people they show in meetup vids seem wonderful. The small Tumblr community are some of the nicest people I've seen from this fanbase. But to be honest? The loud minority speak over the quiet majority. And when it comes to such a large community? The minority is still HUGE. 

 If even some of you decided to maybe not post that hate comment, not tell that one member to quit or even kill themselves (yes, I've seen comments like that and they disturb me), if you decided to be a somewhat pleasant person for maybe once on this website, that could make a difference. If you chose to lift someone up, instead of putting them down, you could chose to spread some happiness in this group of people. 

But you don't. 

You only spread hate. You whine and yell and complain, with no regard for the REAL PEOPLE behind the screen, with no respect for their work, with no thanks or gratefulness for the content you are allowed to view for free. And nothing. Ever. Changes. 

So, I have a challenge for anyone who has seen this comment or even read this far. DO SOMETHING. Say something nice, about someone in the comments or someone in the video. Talk about what you liked. Talk about who you like. Talk about something nice, positive, and maybe brighten someone's day. 

Because if you are like me, and this frustrates you and sickens you, you WANT things to change. You want to make this a safe, positive place where we can enjoy the videos and talk to each other. And the only way to do that is to ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING.

And don't give me that, "Oh, it's the internet, trolls will be trolls! There's always gonna be haters!" No. Absolutely not. Being online does not give you the excuse to be a horrible human being. And saying that only validates the thought processes of the people who are leaving this hate. This is something that NEEDS to change. 

 So, if you even somewhat enjoy Smosh; if you saw this comment, and it didn't get completely swallowed by negativity; if you can take the time out of your day to be a nice person, DO SOMETHING KIND. Compliment someone. Make a nice joke. Comment about what you loved about this video, or literally ANYTHING good. Please. Let's try to turn this fandom into something good again. Love CAN beat hate. All we need are people who will try.
