Smth I find adorable in the mechs albums is that despite. Well. EVERYTHING- They all seem to have one consistent theme.
Love.
OUATIS: Rose and Snow, Rose and Cinders, Cinders killing King Cole cus he killed her wife it’s very cute and very sad i love them
UDAD: Ulysses dies the only natural death in a Long Time ™️ to reunite with their dead wife, they love her and is like bitch take me now hurry up.
HNOC: … imma be real honest I haven’t finished listening to that yet. I’ve been busy?
TBI: Loki and Sigyn, they both know they’re doomed, but they don’t give a shit, time is time and even if you can’t prevent it you can delay it, and they’re together even in death, they lost eachother but they’re back together now and they ain’t goin nowhere. Also Loki’s HEARTS blood, her heart, like her love for everything and everyone, she’s giving her love and life to buy them more time even if it won’t change anything
It’s adorable I love it, our tragic lesbians (ulysses is enby it still counts)

The 'I Worship My Wife' Committee (Part 1)
Tumblr media
I just know that Aneka, Namor, Attuma, and Oni have little get togethers where they gush over their wives. And it plays out in my head like this:
Aneka: Thank you all for joining me today. Alright. Well. As always. Let's start off by saying one good thing we have done to show how much we worship our wives. I'll go first. *clears throat* I learned how to give a deep tissue massage and gave Ayo one after she finished training. I also cooked her, her favorite meal. Things definitely got kinda steamy with the wine, but I'll spare you guys the details.
Oni: Nah girl. We share the details. Go ahead.
Aneka: Oh, well, you know. Straps were involved, and toes were curling. I don't think I've ever screamed that much before.
Oni: Oooh. That's why your voice was gone for three days.
Aneka: Yeah. But it was worth it.
Attuma, giving her high-five: Good for you.
Everyone clapped before looking at Attuma.
Attuma: Ah. Well. As you all know. Okoye is pregnant with twins. She's been craving a lot of things lately. She woke up at 3 in the morning sobbing the other day because she wanted something from the market. As you all know. The market is closed at 3 am. But whatever K'iin wants, I'll get it. So I broke into the place she wanted food from, made the meal, cleaned up the shop, left a few pearls as an apology, locked it back up, and brought her back what she wanted.
Aneka: I should have known you were the pearl bandit.
Attuma: I will not tell Okoye no.
Oni: Was udade happy?
Attuma: She was so happy that she rode my face and released after eating. I almost wish I had died with my face between her legs. It was a blissful experience.
Everyone clapped again.
Namor: Wow. That's beautiful.
Attuma: Thank you.
They all looked at Namor.
Namor: So, Shuri has been working on something nonstop without taking care of herself again. Typically, I'd chew her out and drag her to bed. Instead, I decided to come in for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and feed her a meal. I'll even come in to feed her a snack. I also forced her to nap with me and go on walks to take a break. And if you look at her now, you'll notice that she's not drinking as much coffee and she's glowing.
Oni: Yeeeess. We love to see a loved one properly cared for.
Namor: Yes. And now that she's not always going to bed tired, she finally has time to get laid out like a domino.
Aneka, snapping her fingers before pointing at the god king: I love that comparison you just gave us.
Namor: Thank you. I learned a lot at our last family game night.
Attuma: Are you trying for a child?
Namor: We will when she's ready.
They all nodded in agreement before looking at Oni.
Oni: Well. Amora has been wanting me to wear her colors more because she thinks orange and red really compliment me. So. Me being the good wife I am, I started wearing a few of her gowns, and she was ecstatic. Then I felt adventurous one day and put on her armor and pretended to be her when she got home.
Namor: Ooooo. How did that go?
Oni: She bent me over and fucked me until I cried.
Attuma: She made you cry?
Oni: Yes. I was so overstimulated, that I couldn't even move away.
Aneka: Is that why you were in a wheelchair for a week?
Oni: Yes, and my wife spoiled me every day to make up for it.
They all laughed softly at the memory of Oni pouting in a wheelchair while Namora tried to cheer her up.
Namor: I knew your lie of hurting your ankle seemed odd. You were pouting way too much with Namora around.
Oni: Beyond these walls. It's still a busted ankle. Amora will be livid if she knows I told you all what actually happened.
Attuma: We won't tell a soul.
Namor: You have our word.
Aneka, nodded in agreement: See. I knew Namora was a freak.
Oni: Oh hush. Ayo is just as nasty with you.
Aneka: And see. We didn't even have to go there.
Should I write out another meeting? 🤣😭

mechs timeline... or something
good evening gender identities! i’ve been thinking about the order the albums might have happened in, chronologically, and how events from some albums might have affected others! and now i have a whole long theory/headcanon about it, because i’m insane. so. here we are!
(obligatory disclaimer that i did make some assumptions about events that happened offscreen, and while they’re all based in actual canon, they are still, y’know, headcanons that shouldn’t just be taken as fact.)
so, typically the assumption is that the albums take place in the same order that they were released (ouatis udad hnoc tbi, with ttbt songs wherever they fit) which is possible (and probably correct tbh)! but this line from ‘ulysses’s will’ caught my attention:
Doesn’t matter there’s nothing beyond the City save the automated colonies that feed it and the empty black.
which could be interpreted a couple different ways, but the most literal being that there really is nothing beyond the city- there are no more habitable planets, & the city has taken over the last planets and is using them for maintaining the city (presumably). which, considering we know that there are many planets and other Things In Space in the mechsverse, probably means that udad is actually the last of the albums to take place, timeline-wise.
the only piece of evidence i could find directly contradicting this is that nastya went Out right before tbi, and was present (though offscreen) during udad. but time travel is an established thing in the mechsverse that we know the mechanisms have access to, so:
yes, udad happened last in linear time, but that doesn’t mean that it happened last in mechs time- in fact, if i were newly immortalized & could travel through time, the last human civilization is probably one of the first places i’d want to go. so the album release order is probably the order that the mechs visited these planets, even if that’s not the order they existed in, like, human history.
anyway! so what order did the albums take place in, then?
i’m gonna go out on a bit of a limb and say that i think tbi actually took place first! i know it’s usually considered to take place last because it was the last album to be released, (+ the thing in out i talked about already). but hear me out!
tbi took place first, after a good portion of, like, other things had already happened. what other things? i don’t know! the mechs probably didn’t write about them because they were actually happy, or unsatisfying, or whatever. so tbi is actually the first step to the destruction of the rest of the universe, and i’ll explain how that might have happened in a moment. (which actually explains why lyf saw notes that the mechs’ technology seems so alien- it was pretty early along in the timeline, compared to the rest of the albums).
so i’m working under the headcanon that the bifrost managed not only to destroy all of the yggdrasil system, but a good portion of the rest of the universe as well. it’s pretty easy to guess how the sudden disappearance of a whole system would lead to people going to investigate, which would lead to more people getting killed by the Rainbow Shit, and if anyone survived they’d probably bring bits of the Rainbow Shit back to their home planets, ect, ect. (also, not to delve too far into forbidden lore, but the void spreads.) so, the bifrost probably wiped out most of the civilizations in the universe.
but a few planets/systems survive- ones far enough away that they weren’t immediately affected, and were able to get word that Maybe Investigating This Is Not The Best Plan. which brings us to ouatis, which i think happened sometime after tbi (possibly around the same time or after as hnoc- i’m putting it first for organizational purposes, but it could go either way).
so the system from ouatis survives, & this is probably how old king cole was able to establish himself as an immortal tyrant, since there was a sudden lack of other governments to keep him in check/send support to citizens starting an uprising. this basically leaves old king cole free to colonize a good portion of the planets that weren’t destroyed by the bifrost. presumably the government collapes after king cole dies, (to quote the fiction, it most likely suffered ‘the most horrendous power vacuum and subsequent bloodshed the universe has ever seen’ which probably killed a good amount of the remaining citizens) and that’s another mass civilization down! fun times.
which actually ties very neatly into alice. it’s unlikely that the ouatis system (does it have a name? i can’t keep calling it the ouatis system i can’t) was able to completely escape the horrors of the bifrost, and might still have some residual effects in the areas that the void touched. the planet/moon from alice was probably an area heavily touched by the void, which might be why it’s Like That.
and then we get to hnoc, which, again, could have happened at any time around when ouatis was taking place. we know that they were never able to finish building the station, & that contact with the outside world was abruptly cut off in holder of the grail. so it’s not unlikely that the civilization, or at least part of it, was killed by the bifrost. (i mean, the other option is that they just, like, got bored with the station and ghosted an entire colony). the station survived due to previously mentioned lack of contact with the outside world, although this doesn’t last long.
which brings us to udad! unlike fort galfridian, i don’t think it was completely cut off from the rest of the universe- just far enough away, or relatively untouched, enough that it was still habitable. which is probably why it got so crowded- so many people were moving there after their home got destroyed by cosmic horror rainbows. there’s also something to be said about the fact that the city is modeled after the ‘roaring twenties,’ which was a time of innovation and celebration after recovering from disaster, but that might be reading too far into it.
but, while the city was mostly sheltered from the bifrost attack, it probably was still at least slightly touched by bifrost, similar to alice. which might be how we get things like orpheus being able to see the future in his dreams. hm! sounds familiar! it’s almost like someone else also apparently saw the future in their dreams and was connected to the void!
[ODIN] When I first built this train, this snaking engine of change, I could not have guessed that this is where the songs I dreamt of would lead.
haha. yep.
also, taking the epilogue into account and how ashes burned down the acheron, effectively killing the last life in the universe... and how they died at the very end of the universe, briefly the brightest thing in the universe... well. i’m not saying that when ashes died they were cast back forward to when they burned down the acheron for the first time but maybe that’s what i’m saying.
so, to recap: during the bifrost incident, the void leaks through into our world and destroys most of it. fort galfridian and king cole’s empire are some of the few surviors, due to lack of contact, although king cole couldn’t completely escape the bifrost. both of these civilizations fall, leaving the city as the only habitable place left, although also slightly touched by the bifrost. the city also eventually falls into ruin, and with it, the last humans in the known universe. and that’s how the world ends, i guess! woo.
again, don’t take this as canon or whatever- i’m just taking the vague scraps that the canon did give us and turning it into a story that makes sense, at least from my perspective. so, yeah!

So you finished listening to The Mechanisms?
Finding more content always requires a little searching in this fanbase, and honestly, there’s probably content we haven’t discovered yet. Here are some starting points!
If you listened on only the Spotify, you may have missed on the Bandcamp Tales to be Told Volume 1 and the stand-alone album based on Frankenstein. There are images of the albums themselves, which includes lore varying from what the Mechanisms may have been up to while in The City, to files on the suspects of the Bifrost Incident.
The Mechanisms also have a website. Apparently some people are unaware of this.
On this website there is canonical fiction, written by members of the band themselves. It mostly contains content unable to fit in OUATIS, UDAD, and HNOC, as well as a stand-alone story about Dorian Grey. There is also fiction written about the space pirate crew themselves. My personal favourites include “I Will Rule This Town” and “The Wake” from HNOC, “The Hacker’s Mistake” and “Eskhatos” from UDAD, “A Bedtime Story” from the Crew, and the ever notorious, “Out”. Trust me you want to read/listen to these, they are all so amazing.
On Youtube there are recordings of live performances of Mechanism gigs, some dating back to when they were still Dr Carmilla and The Mechanisms. Popular ones include Revenge of Spaceport Mahon, Gender Rebels, and what we’ve dubbed The Lashings Gig. All of these include bickering between the band and develops their dynamic as a crew, and the hivemind that are us Stowaways. This is the playlist I tend to use.
Speaking of Dr. Carmilla- go support Maki’s music here! They’re wonderfully mysterious, however some music does have heavier content. Read the content warnings and be safe.
Go support the other Mechanisms, too! Here’s their own master post!  Have fun exploring!

hi!!! don’t hate me automatically for this, but i finished the magnus archives recently and decided to see what was good with the mechs. i figured that the mechs sounded like my thing anyways, and that i might as well get into something new!! i’ve been listening to the albums in chronological order (i just finished high noon over camelot) and i’m in love?? however. distinguishing voices i’m not familiar with is not my forte, and the mechs wiki hasn’t been supes helpful on who sings what at times, so i wanted to ask for clarity’s sake: what roles does ashes sing, and who is “cinder’s song” from once upon a time in space sung by? you don’t have to answer, i just figured you might know and you seem nice!!! - chaos
Hello chaos! No problem at all! The issue here is: im so fucking bad at voices anon. When Simon Fairchild showed up that one episode where he mocked Martin I was like "is this Elias???? Martin??? I think this is martin??? And then Martin spoke and I got even more confused
It doesn't help that the parts scramble during various shows and who plays who changed over the years. I only just figured out how to recognize Ashes and distinguish Brian and Tim's voices. Jonny has always been easy because i too started here from tma
But anyway, the YouTube channel TheVoidSings has lyric videos that have who sings who in the descriptions for future reference.
Anyway as per your question, uhhh I think Ashes might play mordred, i know they sing cinders in one liveshow? Um. Okay so ashes is Hades in udad. I only know who Tim plays.
Im gonna go look this up lmao
Ok cinders song: The Toy Soldier (Jessica Law) sings cinders in the album off bandcamp and spotify
So Ashes: Ashes sings in Sirens of UDAD, plays and is Hades in udad, plays Mordred in hnoc, and Sigyn in Bifrost Incident.
But, in various live shows, Ashes plays as i think Cinders?
Also in case you didn't know: Ashes's actor, Frank Voss, plays Basira in tma
I.. Hope this is even vaguely understadable

jonny, ivy, and/or udad :0? (for the mechanisms ask thing!)
jonny: who is your favourite crew member and why?
if aurora counts, definitely aurora!! i am a simple spaceship simp!
no but legitimately,, her character is so interesting and there’s so much lore there that’s really fun to explore?? and she cares SO MUCH about everything and she’s very fun to write and shes just cute also,, i love her
if aurora doesn’t, probably marius! i think his lore is fun and funky and i like being sad about it
ivy: recommend a good fic about the mechanisms
everything you’ve ever written
no uh! a recommendation i think you’d like,, hmm,, metal hearts still love by breathofafeather is a very sweet fluff fic (with a hint of angst) and it’s actually got a piece focusing on the backstory of each crew member and characterizes them all very well! (marked as incomplete, but reads like a finished oneshot)
udad: what is your least favourite song/album?
i really like udad in terms of the characters, but i do think my least favorite song has got to be from there. it’s just not really in the area of where my musical taste is! think it’s probably either broken horses or my name is no one. jonny’s angy voice just doesn’t really do it for me
(ask game)

iiiiii read the tags on your one post PLEASE tell me your explanations for our boy jack and elysian fields on jonny's playlist (and any others you wanna elaborate on!)
HELL YEAH. Ok so I made/finished Jonny’s playlist first, and yet the rules that I set for which Mechs songs I could include made it very difficult because One Eyed Jacks isn’t on Spotify, and that’s both his backstory track and what plays under his death. So he’s the reason the “iconic songs” rule exists. I decided there needed to be one from OUATIS since that album is just Jonny, TS, and Tim sometimes, so I went with Our Boy Jack cause I think it fits Jonny’s energy best, just, murder! Fuck authority! And then Elysian Fields was initially the first solo he has in UDAD that I thought of, but then when I thought about that in relation to Jonny and his death I got very sad. Just, the complete and total acceptance Ulysses has of their death, and the fact that they’re actually happy to be dying because they can finally be free of their memories and be free of The Acheron and a hellish eternity, and if that’s not Jonny “excited to die” D’Ville then idk what is.
Ok I went on a rant about Raph’s playlist already so I’ll find that and screenshot it or whatever but I’ll just do other random ones now.
I’m very attached to trans Jonny and trans Marius but they’re both different sides of the trans guy spectrum so that’s why Mama is on Jonny’s playlist and Home is on Marius’.
Cecily Smith is on Brian’s playlist for the specific “welcome to the band, I hope you like music!” thing that he has going on, and because of the end going along with Brian outliving most of the crew.
Prom Queen on Ivy’s playlist goes along with a specific hc/Tik Tok chain about the scars left behind from being mechanized
Our Last Summer is on TS’s playlist and by all rights, it’s an ABBA song, it shouldn’t make me sad, but it does. TS misses its friends...
Carry On is on TS’s playlist cause it fits but mostly b/c of the line “I was lost and now I don’t roam these streets/I am not the ghost you wanted of me” because of both the meuseum and Salvation Army part of its backstory and because of its collection after the Rose Red war being while a dude was robbing corpses
The person I @ on the original post said “soft sad love songs are mariuscore” and that just made the entire playlist. Also thank you to the person who reblogged the post with the tags “You Told The Drunls I Knew Karate is such a fucking gay found family stupid decisions best friends kinda song. That made no sense but. y know?” because yes, I do know, and you get it.
Achilles Come Down and Icarus are both references to my funky Greek mythology obsession, for Tim it’s the fact that someone brought up that Tim and Bertie were super similar to Achilles and Patroclus which is TRUE and SAD. And Icarus is my own take which is “yeah Brian is an Icarus figure, he plays Daedalus and also oh man does that guy have some hubris before he gets killed”
Little Lion Man on Jonny’s playlist is specifically a reference to Nastya leaving, and a wild amount of Nastya’s playlist is based on that as well if you couldn’t tell.
And Maps on Jonny’s playlist is a reference to that one time Maki said Jonny was a good boy pre mechanization cause holy shit have I never stopped thinking about that.
Also there’s three Gunpowder Empire songs on these playlists and I actually know fuck all about the band other than those three songs, I stumbled upon one of their songs while trying to finish Tim’s playlist, looked at the lyrics of some of their songs and went “alright fuck it” and put them on there
Ok ty for letting me rant, I’ll find the Raph rant and reblog this with it perhaps

Tales to be Told I, Frankenstein, Toy Soldier
THANK U ANON
Tales to be Told I - Who’s your favourite in-album character
hmmm ok ok ok. i gotta say uhhh.... ulysses or loki? i only JUST got myself to listen to most of the rest of their stuff (still need to finish TBBTII and frankenstein tbh) and i do absolutely adore lyf as well. udad i listened to on repeat for like a week tho and my favorite bit is the climactic moment when they shoot the diamond like HOOO its so good. but tbi i ADORE loki and adore her being sung by gunpowder tim and every time i listen to “strange meeting” and thor and loki’s meeting i fucking lose it. the “where are you going” bit hits me SO hard.
Frankenstein - What’s your favourite mechanisms short story?
forgive me but ive not read all of them. but the one that made me almost cry was “out.” the interview transcript was also Very Good. of album stories ive only read gingerbread which i really liked! i gotta read them all tho.
Toy Soldier - How would you describe mechanisms to a non mechs fan
“ok so you know, like, concept albums? where there’s a story? they do a bunch of those and also they play as characters in the same universe. theyre a bunch of space pirates. its really cool.” - me, whenever ive explained mechs to non-mechs fans ldkjdf
send me mechs asks!! please!!!!!!

right now i'm finishing up the ✨mystery piece✨ that i originally meant to finish in like, 30 minutes, but i need something to work on after that and i'm incapable of making decisions on my own without the influence of my tumblr followers and if no one points me in the right direction i'll end up drawing none of the above SO my options are
- my isotristanmydes agenda (isolde x tristan x palomydes á la medieval literature)
- my isotristanmydes agenda but pride themed
- that one part of the byelorussian tristan where isolde keeps warning palomydes that a knight is drawing closer and raising the stakes until she basically says "yeah there's not 5 knights but there's 1 tristan and he'll kill you if you stay" and it's a good scene
- that other part of the byelorussian tristan RIGHT before palomydes gets sent to super mega turbo hell via tristan's sword (he asks him to be his worst enemy again in the most homoerotic way possible then gets injured, shows up one more time, dies offscreen and is mentioned like,, twice in the next two pages then never again)
- that other part of the byelorussian tristan where galahad realizes he beat up his father and tristan and gets sad and embarrassed and then just DIES from it
- last byelorussian tristan one i prommy but that one part where galehot asks tristan to join his marriage (to lancelot)
- the hnoc piece i literally started reading med lit for and planned out in november
- voice cracks piece i've had planned since february
- y'know how narcissus enters seaside by leaning against a doorway? well-
- narcissus... but i have something specific in mind i can't quite put into words...
- two of my fucking. udad ocs (the butch and femme ones, specifically)
- gerrymike as an apology to my tma followers who are still here (i have,,, something very specific in mind)
- statement givers indulgence (jordan kennedy. i am talking abt jordan kennedy)
- mike crew specifically bc i miss him <3
- an actual fucking icon with daughter dooley on it
- the binding of horned head ft. no children by the mountain goats
- the boy (ogoa)
- sarah avery and annie messer from that one scene i think abt every day of my life
- how i think a meeting between daughter dooley and the dead queen would play out
- vera blevins right before she made a run for it
- railroad man genvy (hey, at least i'm not haint thirsty)
- self portrait to feel better abt myself (i'm embarrassed just to say it)
- that mermaid from early last month. you know the one. she's nice to draw.
