done with rain world therefore must talk about it
ok so i didn’t actually finish my playthrough bc i got to the farm arrays and after having previously watched skurry’s entire playthrough i just felt done u know. like i know what happens next and after over 120 cycles and 25 hours of gameplay, i feel satisfied, at least for the moment. i briefly tried playing as monk so i could explore the harder areas i had avoided as survivor, but it’s just way too similar and it doesn’t feel like it’s worth going through the entire game again when i’m only really interested in like three areas.
the game is long, there’s so much to explore and sometimes it’s really hard to navigate, and for me it doesn’t feel like the type of game that gets radically shorter once you know what you’re doing, u know. so i’m definitely done with the base game for the moment.
as for downpour, i have done a lot of research and concluded that the areas n stuff are different enough for me to want to try some of it out. i’m specifically interested in gourmand bc its on the more wholesome side and rivulet for the great movement and fuckton of lore. i would love to try saint bc its set in an ice age and it has the most lore but you have to do spearmaster first which im really not interested in and its also like. hard. like reaaaaaally hard. eh idk maybe ill try it at some point in the far future.
but anyway despite not wanting to play a lot of it the game has a special place in my heart and i totally understand why the fandom is so dedicated. once you get used to it the movement is an absolute joy, so is watching other creatures and exploring the world despite there being virtually no reward, and don’t even get me started on the lore bc there is so much. there is so much. in broad words it’s basically a really sad hard sci-fi story with poignant themes masquerading as a rat-in-manhattan sim.
THERE IS SO MUCH TO THIS GAME I STILL CAN’T WRAP MY HEAD AROUND IT. even without downpour there is so much to the lore, the world design, the music, the ai of the creatures, literally everything, but downpour has so much content it might as well be an entire sequel i s2g.
of course, it’s not perfect, it has a steep learning curve, it does get frustrating quite often, there are some areas that might not have been too well thought-out gameplay-wise, and for me personally it doesn’t have too much replayability, but it’s truly an incredible game, especially when you consider that it’s an indie game, and i will honestly never forget the first time i watched survivor’s opening cutscene.
