Get to Know Me
Tagged by @pixelatedpanic thanks so much! Hope your recovery is going well ☺️
Last Song - Pretty Visitors by Arctic Monkeys, I was just driving around and that happened to be what I arrived on
youtube
Last Show - I left my apartment when the last episode of Naked and Afraid XL season 4? I think? finished. I watched every episode of N&A and the fixation isn’t over yet so I’m rewatching my favorite seasons.
Currently Watching - A Tomato VOD that I already saw live but it was really funny and I need bath entertainment, this is the only streamer I consistently watch
youtube
Currently Reading - The Road to Jonestown: Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple by Jeff Guinn, I finished his other book about Waco and loved it so I’m reading the Jonestown one now and it’s actually wild how much he did before the flavoraid, I didn’t know a lot of it
Current Obsession - Wish I had one, I’m inbetween fixations at the moment. It was TS4, then it was Shadows of Doubt, then it was TS4 again, and now that’s dying down, then it was Pokemon Sword for 2 days, and that stopped completely. I hate the inbetweens.
Tagging anyone who wants to do it! Ty again for the tag!

On November 18, 1978, three of Jim Jones’ children—Stephan, Jimmy, and Tim—were in Georgetown, Guyana with their basketball team. When the Temple members in Georgetown received orders from their father telling them to kill themselves, Jimmy attempted to convince their father not to order mass-suicide. When that didn’t work, Stephan stalled to keep the group of Temple members in Georgetown from taking their own lives and called the Peoples Temple in San Francisco every half hour to ensure they stayed alive. All three went to the U. S. embassy in a last attempt to stop Jim Jones.
As many macabre stories as I’ve heard about Jonestown and as often as people jokingly say “don’t drink the Kool-Aid”, I didn’t learn about how many lives Jones’s sons saved—and tried to save—on the exact same day until today.

WWW Wednesday is a meme hosted by Sam at Taking on a World of Words. It’s open for anyone to join in and is a great way to share what you’ve been reading! All you have to do is answer three questions and share a link to your blog in the comments section of Sam’s blog.
The three Ws are:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?
A similar meme is run by Lipsyy Lost and Found where bloggers share This Week in Books #TWiB.
  What I’m reading now:
How To Say Goodbye by Katy Colins
I was delighted to get an ARC of this book from NetGalley a little while ago as I’d read an interview with Katy and knew I had to get my hands on this book. I started reading it yesterday and I’m really loving it so far. I love the main character and how hard she works to give people the best possible send off. I’m really looking forward to getting back to this one.
Almost Love by Louise O’Neill
I’ve had this book on my TBR for ages and somehow haven’t managed to get to it. I finally picked it up a couple of days ago and am loving it! I’m trying to read it slowly because I want to take it all in – it’s quite eye-opening how much I can relate to this book when I think back over past relationships, particularly from when I was younger. I can see why so many people have raved about this book.
The Road to Jonestown: Jim Jones and the People’s Temple by Jeff Guinn
I’ve wanted to read this book for a really long time so when I realised I had a spare Audible credit this week I decided to buy it and I started listening right away. It’s a long audio book so it’ll take me a little while to read it but I’m finding it fascinating. I’m so glad I finally picked this one up!
The Eleventh Day: The Full Story of 9/11 by Anthony Summers
I’ve been reading this book on and off for a couple of months now but I’m really in the mood for non-fiction at the moment so am going to try and focus on this book over the coming week or so.
  What I recently finished reading:
Lake Child by Isabel Ashdown
I love Isabel Ashdown’s novels so have been eagerly anticipating this new book. I picked it up yesterday and read it in one sitting! I really did love this book and will be posting a full review as soon as I can. In the meantime I highly recommend it!
Minimalism: Live A Meaningful Life by Joshua Fields Milburn
As some of you will know I’m obsessed with de-cluttering books and while I now seem to have my clutter under control (see my post on how the KonMari method changed my life) I can’t resist books on the subject. So I was really looking forward to reading this book but I have to be honest and say it was such a disappointment. It was all about health and relationships, with a huge amount of repetition about the writer’s own life. I did finish the book but I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re looking for a book about minimalism itself.
Postscript by Cecelia Ahern
I read PS I Love You when it was first published so have been eagerly anticipating this sequel ever since it was announced. I have to say that I loved this book, it was everything I hoped for and more. It made me smile, it made me sob and I adored it. I’ll be reviewing this one soon.
The Honeymoon by Rona Halsall
I had an ARC of this book but when I spotted it on Scribd I decided to listen to the book. I’m really glad I did as the audio was an enjoyable listen.
Chase Your Shadow: The Trials of Oscar Pistorius by John Carlin
I finally picked this book back up this week and finished reading it. I was shocked when marking as read on GoodReads to discover that I initially began reading it in November last year! I’m not sure why I put it down because it was such an interesting book following the trial of Oscar Pistorius but also looking at his childhood and his disability. There is also a wider look at how the law works in South Africa, which I found fascinating. I would recommend this book and am so glad I finally read it.
The Bookshop of the Broken Hearted by Robert Hillman
This is a beautiful slow novel that I really enjoyed. I’ve already written a mini review of this which will appear on my blog this week.
I Found My Tribe by Ruth Fitzmaurice
I’ve wanted to read this book ever since last year when I read the book Ruth’s husband Simon wrote. This is Ruth’s story as she explores her emotions around her husband’s Motor Neurone Disease diagnosis and how it changed their lives. She takes up swimming with a group of women in similar circumstances and this helps her to cope. I didn’t connect with this book as much as I hoped to but I did enjoyed it.
What I plan on reading next:
The Dangerous Kind by Deborah O’Connor
As I continue to try and catch up on my review books before the end of the year The Dangerous Kind is going to be my next read. I’m really looking forward to reading this book and think it will be one I devour!
The Water Cure by Sophie Mackintosh
This is another review book that I’m been keen to get to. I think this will be a slower read and I’m looking forward to that.
Never Have I Ever by Joshilyn Jackson
I’ve been so excited to get to this book and now I’m focusing predominantly on review books I’m going to make this book a priority for the coming days. I can’t wait to start it!
What have you been reading this week? I’d love to hear. And if you take part in WWW Wednesdays or This Week in Books please feel free to leave your link below and I’ll make sure to visit and comment on your post. 🙂

Book Reviews Part 2 Non-Fiction Audible books – Podcast 115
Podcast: Play in new window | Download
Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | Google Podcasts | Stitcher | RSS
Today I’m sharing 11 non-fiction books that are a very interesting mix. The list includes books that can be considered among the BEST ever written, interesting stories, sad ones and funny books! Something for everyone! And I’m trying this new thing – Review in 2! I’m going to review all the books in 2 minutes or less – each, not total! I have a lot!
Follow @RunEatRepeat for more and check out RunEatRepeat.com for the show notes and links to all the books mentioned.
Let’s start with a warm-up:
Updates…
I have the Samsung Galaxy Note phone… I love it because it’s big and I’ve always used an android. But… I wanted the apple ear buds… air pods… ear pods?
I was thinking about changing phones for that reason alone! But – I spotted the Samsung Galaxy Buds and my life has been better ever since (2 weeks ago).
I recommend them!
I recently updated RunEatRepeat to be easier to navigate – it seemed like it was hard to search on mobile. So I changed the homepage to break down the blog posts, recipes, podcast posts, training plans and discounts page.
Please let me know if it’s the worst. I’m open to constructive feedback and suggestions!
I’m supposed to ask you for a favor… can you give me a ride to the airport at 5am next Tuesday?
No? Oh, okay.
Well instead – Can you please leave a 5K review for the podcast in your podcast app. I use Stitcher so I only know how to walk you through that… but whatever you’re on right now – I’d appreciate it.
And be sure to subscribe to the show by adding it to your favorites or whatever so the episodes show up auto-magically and you never miss a beat! Thank you!!
Top Non-Fiction Books Review Podcast…
The review of a book shouldn’t be longer than the actual book, right? Right. So I’m going to try and keep it short by reviewing all of these books in 2 minutes. I call it a Review in 2!! As in 2 minutes. Because it rhymes. If ‘Review’ rhymed with 9 it would be a nine minute review…so thank Mr. Webster or whoever made up the word ‘review’ for that one.
You can see my previous podcast episode 114 with Fiction Book Reviews here.
Let’s go…
Book Review Scale… 1 to 5
1 = Didn’t like it. Didn’t want to finish it. Wouldn’t recommend.
2 = Assigned reading. Tedious.
3 = Okay. Either – good story w/ okay writing OR meh story w/ good writing.
4 = Good! Liked it. Would recommend.
5 = Great! Loved it. Will recommend/force on everyone I talk to for a week after reading it.
Non Fiction Books on Audible
Born a Crime: Stories from a South African childhood
by Trevor Noah
Rating: 4.5
Great. Loved this book. Loved that Noah read it – he was fun and animated. Love learning about his experience growing up in South Africa. Thought it was very interesting how he was treated differently because he was light skinned.
Becoming
By Michelle Obama
Rating: 5
Loved. Love that she read the book. Love the insights into behind the scenes of the White House. I can’t imagine! I want more of that. All the little things that completely changed – like taking her daughters to school and going out to dinner – so interesting!
Educated
by Tara Westover
Rating: 5
GREAT. Also – heartbreaking and horrible. Ugh. I got so mad. If I think about it I’ll be mad again. I’m really upset with her parents. I cannot believe her brother.
I’m going to give a spoiler: He adult brother KILLS his dog Diego. Stabs him to death. I hate it. It’s bullshit and he’s a violent person with an anger issue that’s a ticking time bomb.
The Glass Castle
by Jeannette Walls
Rating: 5
Heartbreaking and frustrating. The reader’s voice sounded like my mom’s friend so it was a little distracting though. There’s an interaction with her mom towards the end that’s super frustrating.
Small Fry
by Lisa Brennan-Jobs
Rating: 3.9 while reading it… but later 4.
Go-kay. While I was listening to it I didn’t really love it. I text my bookie friend and she said she liked it. So I decided to make a bigger effort to give benefit of the doubt. As the book went on I started to like her more.
Maybe You Should Talk to Someone
by Lori Gottlieb
Rating: 4.5
Great. So interesting to hear about a therapist going to therapy. BUT didn’t think it was super believable that she struggled over basic things like… does her therapist like her?…
I Might Regret This: Essays, Drawings, Vulnerabilities, and Other Stuff
by Abbi Jacobson
Rating: 4.3
Great. I loved it, but it was too short. If you’re a fan of Abbi Jacobson you’ll like this. It feels like you’re on a road trip with her just chatting. I wish there was more.
Man’s Search for Meaning
By Viktor E Frankl
Rating: 5
Amazing. Perspective yo.
Road to Jonestown
by Jeff Guinn
Rating: 3.4
Okay. Read this because I wanted to start a book club with my 1 friend and he was already reading it. I didn’t know anything about Jonestown before reading it – and I think that was a drawback. A lot of the book told the story about Jim Jones and how he built his church and following in the US. It wasn’t interesting. It was like a boring history lesson at times? And if I would have known this guy is going to lead a cult and kill a bunch of people… maybe in that context he’d be more interesting.
You’ll Never Blue Ball in This Town Again
by Heather McDonald
Rating: 4.3
Life is a Marathon
by Matt Fitzgerald
Rating: 4.8
Unexpected life story from a running coach sharing his life, relationships and running.
You can click here to check out all the books on this list and more on Amazon:  Books – Reading or Listening on the Run.
Currently Listening to…
Big Little Lies – by Liane Moriarty
and Getting the Love You Want – by Dr. Harville Hendrix and Dr. Helen LaKelly Hunt

Hello, my lovely, loyal readers! Since I haven’t been regularly posting, I figured I’d give y’all an update on my reading escapades!
P.S. Did any of y’all suddenly get that song, “What’s Up” by 4 Non Blondes stuck in your heads?!
Sweet Reads
If you’re a fan of The Baby-sitters Club like me, you’ve absolutely GOT to check out the Graphix editions by Raina Telgemeier!
I read the third in the series, Mary Anne Saves the Day, and adored it! The Graphix editions totally take me back to the era of Ann M. Martin, the BSC creator.
I also adored and was greatly entertained by Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians! This book is so freaking good and I’m stoked to read the next two books in the series, China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems!
The Bookshop on the Corner by Jenny Colgan is a precious, heartwarming read. While a departure from the genres I generally stick to, this story really grabbed me. I highly recommend Colgan’s novel!
Rereading Laura Ingalls Wilder’s childhood classic, Little House on the Prairie, also took me back in time. I’ve made it a mission to reread the entire Little House series this year and I’m so glad I decided to undertake this wonderful journey!
I’m a sucker for a good graphic novel, especially anything by Brian K. Vaughan, who is author of both the Saga and Paper Girls series, both of which I love. The most recent book I read was Paper Girls, Vol. 4 and it was awesome! I’m dying for volume five to come out – I think I have to wait until this fall!
Sour Reads
*A little note – the Sour Reads column typically includes books I rate three stars or less*
For a new book club I’m in, Read Between the Covers Book Club, [please join us!], I listened via Audible to Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu. I enjoyed Mathieu’s story, but I didn’t totally fall in love with it. Review to come!
I’m really disappointed, devastated really, to report that Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli was simply middle of the road for me. I did like the book; I’m super excited to read Albertalli’s follow-up, Leah on the Offbeat!
Currently – In Books
At this time, I’ve got four books on my plate! I’m reading the beautiful – so far – novel by Wally Lamb, I Know This Much is True, the Louisa May Alcott classic, Little Women, The Road to Jonestown: Jim Jones and Peoples Temple by Jeff Guinn, and I’m listening to The Astonishing Color of After by Emily X.R. Pan.
I’m reading Pan’s lovely tale for the book club I mentioned above, Read Between the Covers Book Club, and I chose to read Lamb’s and Alcott’s books for a reading event I’m co-hosting, which I’ll be mentioning later in this post. I picked the Jonestown book because honestly, cults and their leaders are intriguing – in a blows-my-mind sort of way!
Welcome to My Library!
Looking back over my book purchases these past couple months has astonished me – I’ve gotten a LOT more books than I thought! 😀 I guess I’ve discovered many more bookish resources!
I’m really looking forward to reading everything I’ve obtained – especially the remainder of the Geek Girls series by Holly Smale!
Since I obtained books from quite a few sources – and because I’m in the mood to list them 😀 – I’m going to break down my acquisitions by where I got them!
Kindle
An awfully cute and entertaining-looking book, Color Me Murder by Krista Davis, was added to my Kindle collection, as was Let’s Talk About Love [super excited for this one] by Claire Kann.
I also added I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika L. Sanchez, Tamora Pierce’s In the Hand of the Goddess [I love this series], The Last of August by Brittany Cavallaro, and Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo [which I got for $1.99!].
Kobo
Kobo offered some great deals recently and I got my hands on Kate Carlisle’s A High-End Finish, which I had been continuously renewing through the library, thus my giving up and buying it.
What to Say Next by Julie Buxbaum is another recent personal library addition. I’ve been very attracted to this book, I think because of the adorable cover!
I’ve been dying to read Agatha Christie and got hold of her first Hercule Poirot tale, The Mysterious Affair at Styles = super excited!
The Real [Digital] Library
I am virtually obsessed with the Overdrive app, enabling me to tap into the resources of the library without leaving my house!
When I began utilizing the app, I checked out as many books as possible; I have since learned to check out a few at a time to avoid rechecking books continuously!
As of now, I have a total of three books checked out, with one due in just a few days! LOL! Laura Ingalls Wilder’s fourth series book On the Banks of Plum Creek, Classified As Murder by Miranda James, and iZombie, Vol. 1: Dead to the World by Chris Roberson I borrowed.
I’m SO excited for the iZombie graphic novel – I had no clue there were books! I adore the show and that name – Liv Moore – tickles the crap out of me!
Book Depository
After reading the Geek Girl debut, aptly called Geek Girl, I fell in serious obsession mode with the series and added to my collection by ordering the rest of the series books!
All That Glitters, Head Over Heels, and Forever Geek moved into my library…err the basket beside my bed. 😀
In addition to Smale’s tales, I got a pretty copy of Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman as well as China Rich Girlfriend!
Books-a-Million
I mentioned earlier how excited I am to read Leah on the Offbeat and I get to! I had totally forgotten that I’d ordered it! It’s like Christmas over here! 😀
Also from Books-a-Million, I got Saga, Vol. 8 and Paper Girls, Vol. 4 [which I’ve already devoured], both by Brian K. Vaughan
Challenging
So far, I’m still taking part in The Novel Knight’s Beat the Backlist challenge, the POPSUGAR reading challenge, and, of course, the 2018 Goodreads challenge for the year.
Challenges going on now for short periods of time include the read-a-thon challenge I’m co-hosting with wonderful Twitter friends, Spring Fling, the first installment of Seasonal-a-Thon!
I wanted to participate in Bout of Books 22, but it just didn’t work out for me this round. 😦
So, for Beat the Backlist, I’ve read quite a few backlist books, of which I am very proud! 😀 I’m a member of team Book Bards, and we’re making a comeback! Just because I feel like making a list, here’s a rundown of the books published prior to this year I’ve read!
Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli
Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder
The Bookshop on the Corner by Jenny Colgan
Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan
Mary Anne Saves the Day by Raina Telgemeier and Ann M. Martin
Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu
The Walking Dead, Vol. 9: Here We Remain by Robert Kirkman
The Ersatz Elevator by Lemony Snicket
The Truth About Stacey by Raina Telgemeier and Ann M. Martin
The Secrets of My Life by Caitlyn Jenner
The Austere Academy by Lemony Snicket
Geek Girl by Holly Smale
Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder
Moon Knight, Vol. 2: Reincarnations by Jeff Lemire
Black Beauty by Anna Sewell
Vengeance Road by Erin Bowman
Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
Ms. Marvel, Vol. 4: Last Days by G. Willow Wilson
Why Buddhism is True by Robert Wright
Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen
A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro
When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon
Saga, Vol. 6 by Brian K. Vaughan
Wires and Nerve, Vol. 1 by Marissa Meyer
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
As for the POPSUGAR challenge, I don’t think I’ve completed any of the categories yet, although I do have a mostly complete TBR list. I’m working on Little Women and I Know This Much is True for our month-long read-a-thon!
I’m really proud of my progress in the Goodreads challenge; my current total read is 29, with my goal for 2018 being 77 books. While I am two books behind schedule, I’m not scared – I’m juggling four books at once, plus, I Know This Much is True is really long! LOL!
Love, Maggie
What’s Going On? Hello, my lovely, loyal readers! Since I haven't been regularly posting, I figured I'd give y'all an update on my reading escapades!

How Not to Lead: The Story of Jim Jones
How Not to Lead: The Story of Jim Jones
I just finished a new book by Jeff Guinn and published by Simon and Schuster (2017) called The Road to Jonestown: Jim Jones and Peoples Temple. Before reading it, I had been aware of the general story of what happened in Guyana in 1978 and how a crazy cult leader somehow led over 900 people to their deaths in a religious-socialist commune carved out of the jungle. But that was about all I knew.…
