wildest dreams - [p.jackson]
pairing: percy jackson x reader
wordcount: 1.3K
warnings: none
requested: yes!! (anonymous)
“In your wildest dreams, Jackson,” I scoff, staring down the boy fiercely. My sword in hand, my battle armour on, I was easy to beat this stupid son of Poseidon once and for all.
He grins at me, his smile slightly lopsided. “Okay, Red,” he teases. “Bring it on.”
I roll my eyes at the nickname. He’s been calling me it ever since he came to camp, two years ago. Ever since he found out I was the daughter of Ares, and I lived in a big ugly red cabin with a terrible paint job. I mean, I hate the cabin’s decor as much as the Aphrodite kids, but that doesn’t mean Percy Jackson gets to insult me.
I yell, and charge at him, our swords meeting in midair with a clang. I whirl, aiming for his unprotected side, but he blocks me, sidesteps, jabs at my stomach.
I stumble back, slashing at him, as anger flashes through me. I want to beat him. I have to beat him. This has been going on long enough, and I need to get my revenge.
Two years ago, Percy Jackson came to Camp Half-Blood. On his first proper day here, he tried to drown Clarisse, my older sister, and two of our other siblings. He made a fool out of Ares cabin. Then, later that summer on his stupid lightning bolt quest, he fought our father, the god of war himself, and somehow, he won. He ruined Ares’ reputation completely.
Ever since, I’ve wanted to turn Percy into a Poseidon pancake.
“Come on, y/n!” Adam, my favourite brother, cheers from the side of the arena. “Beat Jackon’s ass!”
“I’m trying!” I shout back, as Percy manages to catch the hilt of my sword in his. He’s stronger than me, and taller. He pushes down, fighting against my strength. Then, as he’s pushing his sword down, he suddenly twists, and I’m forced to let go. My weapon clatters to the ground.
There’s silence from the bleachers. Every camper there, who came to watch us duel, has no idea what to say.
I have a lump in my throat, and I don’t know how it got there. A sudden, overwhelming feeling of defeat grips me, and I send a tearful glare in Percy’s direction.
“I hate you.”
I shove past him, hoping my final words sting him as much as my loss to him stings me.
“You should let this go, you know?”
I glance up in surprise. Leah and I are on stable cleaning duty today, which is an absolutely awful job, in case you were wondering.
“Let what go?” I ask.
She waves her hand aimlessly in the air. “This whole… Percy Jackson thing.”
I raise my eyebrows, disbelieving. “You want me too, what? Forgive him?” I make a sound in my throat that’s almost a gag, almost a growl. “Hell no.”
“Come on!” Leah pleads. She’s the daughter of Athena, with pretty dark skin, dark braids, and warm dark brown eyes. She’s shorter than me, but way smarter and prettier. We arrived at camp almost the same time, three years ago. I’m still not sure why she likes being my friend, but I love Leah.
“Look,” she sighs, leaning against her broom. “I hate Poseidon as much as the next girl, and Jackson isn’t exactly my favourite person.” She grimaces, probably remembering the time Percy messed up and made her team lose at Capture the Flag. I’d won that day, so maybe I should thank Percy for his service.
“But,” Leah continues, “he’s not really a bad person. Like, yeah he’s a total dumbass and annoying and way too cute for his own good–”
“What?” I half groan, half laugh. “No he’s not.” I try to believe it myself.
Leah ignores me. “He’s not worth making your enemy.”
I sigh. “I guess you have a point…” Even saying that feels wrong. I want to hate Percy; I want to get my revenge and prove for once and for all that Ares isn’t lame, that we can be great.
But, Leah is right. There are bigger things to worry about now. There are rumours; Kronos is rising. Luke Castellan is making an army. Camp Half-Blood will be going into war.
I realise my grip on my pitchfork is so tight that my knuckles have turned white. I let go of the pitchfork, watching it fall into the straw on the stable floor and almost disappear.
“Go.” Leah gives me a little shove. “I saw him doing paperwork sorting for Chiron on the porch a little while ago.”
I give her a quick nod, brace myself, break into a sprint, running towards the Big House.
I spot Percy long before I reach the Big House porch. As I near, my footsteps slow to a walk, and I have to force myself to take a deep breath, striving for calm. My temper isn’t easy to control.
“Hey,” I call, taking the front steps two at a time.
Percy half-glances up, looks back down at his pile of letters and documents, then double takes at me. “Y/n?”
I try for a smile, waving at him with my fingers. “What’s kicking?”
“Uh–paperwork,” he replies, looking at me in slight confusion, probably wondering what I’m doing here. “For Chiron?” he adds quickly, then scrunches his nose in a way that almost makes me want to agree with Leah about Percy being cute. Almost.
I nod. “Sounds like torture to me.”
Percy grins wide. “Tell me about it.” He waves the stack of papers in the air as he gets to his feet. He’s only standing half a metre away from me now, closer than we’ve ever been without trying to beat each other up. “I never remember how much I hate being dyslexic until I try doing this.”
I bite the inside of my cheek, suddenly having no idea what to say. Percy seems to notice the awkward pause, and frowns uncertainly at me. “Why are you here, y/n? I doubt it was for just a chat.”
I let out my breath slowly. “Uh—yeah. I came to make out—I mean up! Make up.”
Percy tries to hide his smirk, and fails. I feel my jaw ache from clenching it. All my old hatred for this boy bubbles almost out of control, but I fight it, like I fight everything, and this time I win.
“Okay…” Percy muses. “Y/n, the daughter of Ares, god of war, wants peace.” He stresses the last word. “Not to mention I humiliated both her older sister and her father, when I was twelve.”
I grit my teeth and glare at him. “Do you want me to pulverise you, Jackson? Because I will.”
“Oh really?” Percy has an eyebrow raised. “But I thought you came to make up? Or was it out?”
“Why did I let her convince me to do this,” I mutter, already ready to just make a run for it. But no. Leah was right, albeit pretty frustrating and exasperating and extremely embarrassing. I did need to end this somewhat ridiculous rivalry with Percy. And I guess it was now or never, right?
“I’m sorry,” I blurt out before I can change my mind. “I’ve been stupid and selfish and I’m sorry.” I hold my hand out to him. “Friends?”
Percy stares at me, then my outstretched hand for a count of three. At first, I was almost certain he was going to leave me hanging. That would be so like him! But then, he grins, that adorable, dumbass smile I’ve known for so long now.
“I don’t want to be friends, Red,” he says, his words solemn and his tone teasing. “I’m in love with you.”

Dance With Me, Kiss Me - Chapter 2:
Okay. He was now dancing with Alastor. And everyone was staring at them. Lucifer wasn't nervous because of all the eyes on them. Nope. Nope, no, no siree. Why had the other demon asked him for a dance anyways? They had had been wallflowers all night.
"You mentioned something about a re-do kiss?"
"Oh. That's what this was about. Well, it was Lucifer's idea. He didn't mind helping out. he had been in a similar situation after all.
~
"Isn't it so great that they're finally getting along?" Dancing with her girlfriend, Charlie had been secretly watching over Alastor and her dad. Especially after they started to dance together.
The pair had been getting closer in such a short time. It just proved to the princess that her intuition was right and that her team building exercises were working! She could almost burst from happiness.
"Yeah. That sure is great babe... but are you sure them becoming friends is a good idea? We all know that Alastor wants nothing more than power."
"What? No. Vaggie it's fine. Alastor wouldn't use my dad like that. Even if he tried, my dad is smarter than most people give him credit for. And is powerful enough to handle himself."
"Then why are they going off in private with serious looks on their faces?"
The two girls shared a look, wondering if they should follow the two demons. Just in case.
~
Once alone in one of the many extra rooms, Lucifer closed and locked the door behind them. Privacy and all. He wanted to make sure Alastor would be comfortable.
"What made you change your mind?" While waiting for his answer, not wanting to rush the Overlord, the fallen angel started to set the mood in the room.
"I... have been thinking about what you said. Between that and being subjected to dear Charlie's affections with her other half... It all has me quite curious."
Turning to face the devil, Alastor was surprised by the new additions. There was a fireplace and candles all around the room, lit, and giving off a dim yet cozy light. A furry rug was laid down in front of the fireplace and sat in the middle of it was Lucifer. He looked... stunning.
Gone was his jacket leaving him in his white button down, a few of the buttons undone. His ridiculous hat was also missing, allowing the usually slicked back golden locks to fall in his face. The light of the flames bouncing off him really tied it all together, reminding Alastor that this small, depressed man had once been a happy and graceful angel.
"What... is all of this?"
"I figured I'd try and set the mood. You know, try and make it special and memorial. In a good way."
This man... honestly. Alastor never knew what to think of him. Taking a seat next to Lucifer, the radio demon tried to calm himself. There was nothing to be scared or nervous about. It was just him and Lucifer. Then why was his heart beating so quickly?
"Hey. Al. It's okay. We don't have to do this."
~
"The door is locked. What could they be doing in there?"
"The lights don't seem to be on- is that fire?!"
"What?!" Pulling out her keys, Charlie fumbled a bit, almost dropping them in the process, and quickly unlocked the door. Afraid of what she'd find, Charlie flung the door open and let out a loud and long happy squeal at what greeted her.
There was no disaster. No mess. No fighting. It was just her dad and Alastor. Kissing! Covering her mouth to try and muffle her joyful squealing, the princess was disappointed that she had disturbed them as she watched them jump away from each other.
However, they weren't quick enough to separate before the others had come running to see what had their friend screaming.
"Ha! I told you bitches! Now pay up!"
"Angel!"

I have thoughts on the Rick Sanchez vs The Doctor death Battle. You can watch it here if you want, it's actually really good, tho ends kinda stupidly. The voice acting for Rick isn't the best also. But anyway.
I'm just gonna talk about why I disagree with the results. Not that I fully think the Doctor would lose to Rick, but their set-up kinda makes that a garuntee in the context of the fight.
So, first and foremost, they have the entirety of the Doctor Who universe take place within the Central Finite Curve. Meaning Rick, in this fight, is smarter than the Doctor, as only universes where Rick is the smartest exist in the Central Finite Curve. This here honestly is enough to give Rick the win. If the Doctor exists in the Central Finite Curve, and Rick has prior knowledge of the Time Lords, that means somewhere out there, a Rick has invented a way to destroy them. And because our Rick is basically a god among Ricks, so far above most of them he can butcher an entire army of Rick's effortlessly, he would 100% either have found this weapon or invented it. He is, after all, only one of 2 Ricks who invented Portal Travel themselves.
Giving Rick home field advantage AND prior knowledge of the Time Lords means... He has fully prepared for fighting one. Likely has even fought one once before (at least a version of him has in all likelihood). This means there is no possible way the Doctor can actually win.
Second, with the above being true, this comes to my second reason: the Doctor is a pacifist. Even in the fight he hesitates constantly to get lethal, while Rick never hesitates. Not once. Rick with prep time against a foe that will hesitate to kill him? Yeah, sorry, that foe loses. Hard.
And yeah, they mention the doctor has gone very far before, even genociding his own people, but this was to defend others and he had to be pushed to get that far. Rick goes that far for KICKS.
Thirdly, and finally... How they make him lose wouldn't happen. Rick wouldn't leave the portal on his back OPEN. Rick is not that stupid. Portals always close behind him unless he purposefully leaves them open.
Meaning their final scene where the doctor is in the process of becoming his next self would not be the end of Rick, but the end of the Doctor. Rick took his own weapon for erasing people from existince and shot it at the Doctor. Rick would not leave the portal on his back open, so the Doctor would have died.
HOWEVER, if they had put the Doctor Who universe outside the Central Finite Curve, then Rick would 100% have lost. But you are throwing a Rick who knows what he's going up against up against a being who's species he knows a lot about while giving him home field advantage. Rick should not have lost.
It was really their set up that makes Rick's loss stupid. If they had done it without the Doctor Who universe being within the Central Finite Curve, then yes, Rick would have lost provided the Doctor actually tried to kill him. Cuz without the intent to kill, you are really not beating Rick. By refusing to kill him, you are just giving him time to figure out how to kill you.

You're Grounded Pt. 2
Summery: Smiley and Angry's little sister is still grounded, only this time...things go differently.
Part One Here
Rating: SFW
Pairing(s): Platonic!Nahoya Kawata x Platonic!Little Sister Reader x Platonic!Souya Kawata
(Still no incest my dudes)
Also spoilers for episode 20-21!!
One week had passed, and ever since you were stuck in your room, only allowed to come out to go to school, to eat, and bathroom breaks. Other than that, no luck getting out from your little prison. And you were warned to not sneak out again, or another week would be added. You didn't bother trying, as much as you hate to admit it, your brothers were smarter than they looked. They knew every move you would make and would do everything in their power to stop you.
However, you were allowed to have your phone back. They were s confident that if you were to try and call for backup, they would stop it from happening. You made the best of it though, at least you had someone to talk to now. Emma wanted an explanation as to where you had disappeared to lately and you told her you were grounded, well, double grounded now. When she asked why, you hesitated to tell her. But you did, after she promised not to tell Smiley and Angry of course. She did say that you should tell them why you started that fight in the first place, but...it was a bit more complicated than that.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
So, here you were, in your room looking blankly at your door. Every now and then Smiley or Angry, or both of them, would come and check to see if you were still there. Speaking of, your door opened, Angry walked in this time. "Right on time, big brother." You mutter, not bothering to look at him. "Smiley had to run out somewhere real quick. So, I'm gonna stay here until he gets back." He leans against the door after he shut it.
"Whatever." You rolled your eyes. The silence between you two was heavy with tension and awkwardness.
"...Sorry about before. But you really shouldn't have tricked us like that." You didn't respond. "Come on. You're acting childish."
"I am a child dummy. And so are you, so stop acting like your our mother." You glared at him. "Oh, and you wanna talk being childish? You two get into fights every fucking day, and you two rarely ever get punished for it! So how come I get double grounded!?"
"You get double grounded for sneaking out. And you shouldn't be getting into fights at all. As for us, it's different." Angry explained as calmly as he could. "That's bullshit and you know it!" You snapped. "You wouldn't be saying any of this if I were in the same gang as you two!"
"You won't be joining any gangs of any kind!" Angry finally snapped back. It was rare that he would ever raise his voice at you, so you were at a loss for words. Once he saw your shocked face he toned it down. "Just...don't do it again. Please Y/n, you shouldn't be fighting."
And then came more silence. You and Angry never liked whenever there would be a fight between all three of you. But tension had build up ever since you got into that stupid fight. And honestly, you knew that it didn't need to happen but after what happened...after what those jackasses said...What choice did you have?
"Why did you do it anyway?" Angry asks, making you look up from your bed. You opened your mouth to answer, but shut it before looking away again. "Does it really matter?" You asked. "It's done. Nothing I can do about it now."
Before Angry could respond, Smiley walked in. "Heeey, she try to get out again?" He asked. "No..." Angry shook his head. "But she's hiding something." You shot him a glare. "Oh, so we're telling lies now?"
"I don't know, are we?" Angry turned to his brother. "When has Y/n ever started a fight? She rarely gets into fights, and normally she isn't the one to start some shit." Smiley nods his head at his brother's words. "That's a good point. So, wanna talk to us like a big girl?"
"No. Get out." You tell them sternly. "Too bad!" Smiley hopped on your bed and sat beside you. "Better start talking sis."
"Or what?" You challenged. Smiley's grin deepened. "Or else your double grounding will turn into a triple grounding." He tells you. "What!? How's that fair!?" Smiley shrugs. "Just is. Now spill." You resisted the urge to slug your annoying peach hair older brother in the jaw before sighing heavily. "You really wanna know? Fine. I started that fight because some asshole was talking shit about you two! Happy?"
Smiley and Angry looked at each other before turning back to you. "You started a fight because of that?" Angry asks. You furrow your brow in frustration. "It's more than that...they called you guys a smiling freak and a whinny crybaby. They also talked shit about Toman. And when I confronted them about it...they said I couldn't do a thing without my brothers there to protect me...that I was just a weak little girl who needed to stay out of other's way...So, I punched their lights out." You didn't notice you were crying until the end of it.
"I wouldn't have hit them if they would have just apologized and kept their mouths shut." You say with a sniffle. It was quiet until Smiley started laughing. "Man! You went and defended ours and Toman's honor? You really are the best little sister." He pets your head. "Huh?" You look up at him confused. "That was nice of you Y/n, but you didn't need to get hurt over us." Angry made his way over to you.
"W-well they were hurt way more than me." You told him. "I handled it didn't I?"
"Yes but, still. You're safety matters to us way more than a few insults thrown at us. Next time that happens, tell us."
"Yeah! We'll beat the fuck out of them so you don't get in trouble like you did." Smiley added. "Don't be like your dumbass older brothers Y/n. You're going places you know? Don't waste it on fighting like a gangster."
"But you guys are in a gang..." You mutter. "Don't get any ideas Y/n." Said Smiley, despite his smile, he was serious. "We wouldn't know what to do if you were hurt or worse. Just be our tough little sis outside of a gang ok?" You pout slightly but nod anyway. You did consider joining Toman, somehow. Your brothers inspired you in more than one way, and being in a gang was one of them. Not just any gang, a real gang. "The new age of delinquents" as Mikey put it.
It sounded so cool when you heard about it, and you wanted so desperately to be by your brothers side when it finally happens. But it wasn't always cool and badass, after Darken nearly dying and Baji's death, it dawned on you just how dangerous joining a gang could be. And Smiley and Angry be damned if they let their little sister be murdered and they couldn't prevent it.
You didn't know Draken and Baji on a personal level like everyone else in Touman did, but they were so kind to you whenever you were around. Baji even joked that you were like Toman's little sister. His death left a hole in the hearts of Toman, including yours...
"I won't get into anymore fights, but you guys have to promise me something too." Smiley and Angry waited for your word. "Promise me...that you'll be careful and promise me, you guys won't leave us like Baji did..."
The next thing you knew, your brothers were enveloping you in their embrace. "And leave you all alone? No way in hell." Smiley said softly. "We're not going anywhere." Said Angry. You sniffled but managed to smile. "Good. I might say I don't want you around, but you guys are all I got. So ignore me whenever I might say it again, ok?"
"Sure thing." Smiley chuckled. "Oh by the way, you're ungrounded."
You perk up. "Double ungrounded?"
"Yep. Double ungrounded. But you better not go start shit with anyone again, got it?"
"Got it." You giggle.
"Good. Now let's get out of here. I bet you're bored right?" Smiley asked as the three of you left your room. "Bored as fuck."
"There's a new arcade that just opened up. Should we go there?" Angry asked. " Hell yeah!" You and Smiley say in unison.
You still have no idea how you got so lucky as to get ungrounded like you did, but you had a feeling your brothers were never going to punish you as harshly as they did before.
Maybe...

Hello hello hello– its me again I have a request for doing a part 2 of your morro x reader oneshot (Headaches, Not Heartaches) but this happens in s5. I got intrigued by the comment that @justanormperson wrote, and I'm all for the drama. So yeahhh
—🌱 (also pls call me planty)
Awww Planty! I like it!
I actually forgot about this comment for a while...there's going to be a bit of angst at first, but there will be a happy ending! (After all, Morro kinda has to die for season 5 to happen) Also Wu is kind of an antagonist... but when is he not. Like I know it's because of marketing, but he is training teens to fight traumatic battles.
(I promise I didn't forget a title shhhh)
Those Eyes of Yours
Where you have become all Morro wants.
He remembered happily.
"Morro?" He didn't like that you were crying. Didn't you love him too?
"Did I do something wrong?" He gets up off his knee, hands falling to his sides. "Isn't this what you wanted?"
Finally, you break into a smile, and his confusion is cleared. "Yes, Morro. It's everything and more." You fling your arms around his torso, grabbing him into a tight hug. You pull away and kiss him, "how did Sensei let you do this?"
He grins, "I'm his favorite child; he'd let me do anything."
"Even be my Yang?"
"Even be your Yang." He wears his piece with pride, helping you out with yours. He felt even closer to you that day, and forever since.
He remembered sadly.
"Sensei, why can't we do this together?" He asked.
"Yeah, we've never separated for years." You took his side, stepping closer to hold his hand. "We're 25 now, haven't we learned everything?"
Sensei Wu shook his head. "You've become dependent on each other. You know how to use your elements together, and fight together, but do you know how to use them alone? What happens if you get separated in the heat of battle? You won't be able to hold your own."
"Yes we can!" You insisted. "We're older, smarter, and stronger; nothing can beat us!"
"Then surely this won't be a problem for either of you. Tomorrow morning you will head to the places your elements originate from. That is where you will become more in tune to your element."
You slept tightly in each others embrace, then left the next morning. With one last goodbye kiss, you head off to the frozen mountains. He won't see you for three months. "Remember, Morro, after this...we'll be stronger, and we can protect everyone."
He remembered angrily.
"They should've been back by now." He missed your calloused hands as they would rub his shoulders every morning he woke up too stiff to move. He missed the way you smelled like fresh, cold air. He missed how you would look at him in such a tender way that his heart would melt. He'd waited a long three months, and an extra week. He spent every day waiting by the door; hardly eating nor sleeping. His wind element had gotten leagues stronger, and he waited patiently and excitedly to show you. Now he wanted nothing more than to hold you tight and snuggle for hours.
For once, Wu looked nervous. Morro didn't like that one bit. "What's wrong, old man?"
He'd only ever called him that when he was upset. This only served to make Wu more anxious. "Perhaps I should check up on them."
"No, I'm coming with you. You can't make me stay behind, not this time." He stood up, pushing past him towards your room, where he gathered up his belongings again for the two day trek to the mountains.
Oh, so angrily.
A failed fire sat in front of you as you lay curled up in a cave, dead several weeks ago, chilled to the point of greyed skin. It must've been slow, cold, lonely, and painful.
You were supposed to have been able to withstand freezing temperatures, but you still had yet to unlock your full potential. Both of you did; that's why Wu had sent the two of you away. He continued cradling your decaying form, crying no matter how much the cold stung, and kissing your face no matter how bad you smelled.
"Oh dear..."
He snapped. "'oh dear'?" He sneered, "(Y/N)...my (Y/N)'s dead and that's all you have to say?" He begins screaming, "they're not some - some machine who can get by on cogs; they were human who needed warm blood and you forced them to come out here on their own with nothing more than the clothes on their back! THEY WERE YOUR FAMILY, WU!! THEY WERE MY YIN!!" He clutches his head, trying to keep his anger under control. You were no longer there to whisper sweetly to him; to convince him to calm down. "You killed them! You let them come here, and killed them!" He grabs him up by the front of his shirt.
"Morro, calm down-" Wu pulls himself away, only to get forced back by a strong wind.
"Don't tell me to 'calm down'." His tone is dangerous and seething. "Give me one good reason why I should just let you walk away from this."
He remembers foolishly.
How ironic. He burned away, opposite to your death, as he realized he was lied to.
He was so desperate to get you back, that he believed Wu when he said that by becoming the Green Ninja, he could save you. The old man was just trying to save his own skin; he should've known. Blinded by his love for you, he let Wu guide him to a volcano, where he was trapped and was burning to death. These last two weeks were the most painful ones of his life. He just hoped that whatever afterlife he was brought to, you'd be there, and you would at least not be disappointed in him forever.
"I'm sorry, (Y/N). I'm so sorry." He clutches his Yang medallion before fading away. It all hurt too much.
But most importantly, he remembers you. He couldn't find you, not at all in the entirety of the Cursed Realm, but The Preeminent told him otherwise.
She told him how you were stuck, and that only she could free you. "I've fallen for that one before. Won't fool me twice." He scoffed.
She tells him that because he threatened the First Spinjitzu Master's son, he was sent here. You were sent to a different place called the Departed Realm. In order to get there, she needed to be brought an artifact called the Realm Crystal, so she wanted to send him to get it.
"I'll kill you myself if you're lying to me." He was sick of this. He just wanted to be with you again. Why was he so different with you gone?
So he did every little thing she told him to do; but it wasn't until he possessed a kid named Lloyd and went to a place called Steep Wisdom that he went berserk. "...you." He stood in front of Wu with a dark look in his eyes. He relished the way his eyes widened in terror, horrified at the sight of his dead student. "Did you miss me, old man? Or does it scare you to see me again?" His grin is sadistic as he uses his full potential to lift an entire windmill, splinter it, and send the shards into a treacherous whirlwind.
He isn't very aware of his surroundings, and receives a cut to the back of the hand by a single shuriken. He remembers the shurikens of ice; they were made for you. These were nothing like those, however. Why was he thinking of you now? He needed to focus on the person who threw the shurikens.
Those eyes are so familiar. "(Y/N)?" Despite being mechanical, they looked so kind. "Could it really be you?" He misses you so much.
The ninja are all confused. Zane speaks up, ignoring him entirely. "Let Lloyd go."
"You know I can't. I'm so close, we can be together again." Morro takes a few steps towards the nindroid. Did you reincarnate somehow? Look like this because he wished you were mechanical? Because he wished your human skin and blood didn't have to freeze and die in the cold?
Zane bites. "Who is (Y/N)?"
He smiles gently, looking at the Yang medallion on Lloyd. It managed to manifest itself when he possessed the teen. "My Yin." Looking back at Zane, his smile falters. "But you are not my Yin. (Y/N) would remember themselves. (Y/N) would remember me." He builds his hurricane up again. "And they would not forgive Wu for letting them die. I don't know how you're related to them, but I can't let you get in my way."
He turns to face the man who failed his first students, but he had already fled with the staff he needed. "No!" The whirlwind is back to full power, and debris is being hurdled around him at fatal speeds. "NO!!"
The ninja don't even bother fighting him, not without their elemental powers nor weapons, so they flee as well. Morro tries to stop them by dragging The Bounty closer to him with all his might, but just the sight of those familiar, yet blue eyes sends him to tears. He can't bear to hurt someone like you, even if he knows they're not you, even if he knows they're not even human. He lets them go, only to summon Lloyd's dragon. He could safely board this way, and not have to worry about hurting the mechanical being.
The ninja are fighting against him, refusing to let him have the staff without a fight, but he won't let them get away with it that easily. Only half of the crew were fighting him, anyway. How hard could this be? "Get out of my way." He sends strong gusts of wind their way; they couldn't possibly beat him if he could simply force them off the flying ship with a flick of his hand. This should be quick.
He's much stronger with his wind power now; more practiced. He uses smaller gusts to boost himself forwards, and he flies down the hallways, busting doors open, looking for the staff.
When he does find it, that's because it's been thrown out of the window right as he busts into the room. "I won't let you keep them from me any longer!" He screams at Wu as he sends wind at him so hard he crashes through the wall into the next room over, injuring him.
The moment Morro's left, the ninja are quick to find a place to hide and rest up. "Sensei...who was that?" Jay's voice trembles as he looks over to Wu.
"Why did he think I was his Yin?"
"He seemed really mad at you."
Wu sighs, his arm bandaged tightly as he decides to tell them the tale of his first students. "(Y/N) and Morro, a commoner and an orphan. They were best friends growing up, and soon fell in love. As you all know now, Morro had the element of wind, but (Y/N) had the element of ice." He looks over to Zane. "You look and sound similar to (Y/N), which is why he was hesitant to destroy The Bounty. He didn't want to destroy you."
Zane looks at his titanium hands. Were you related to him in any way? Why was he so much like you, or were you more like him? Who was made first? Sometimes when he used his powers, he could hear a faint whisper; was that you trying to talk to him? It was a guiding type of whisper, one that was gentle and full of love. It reminded him to use his power to protect others.
"He and (Y/N) did everything together, but one cannot get stronger by depending on others, so for a time, I decided to separate them. (Y/N) got into some trouble fighting a grundal, and even though I rushed to save them, I couldn't make it in time." Wu sighs, sounding upset with himself.
The ninja remember what a grundal was like. Still, they felt awful for you. You had no chance against it, since you were an ice master, not a light one. They all figured you must've been the reason they were all hunted to extinction; Wu wouldn't want that to happen to anyone else.
"Morro was deeply upset with me, believing I just let them die. He wouldn't listen to me; and I didn't expect him to. His Yin just died, and neither I nor he could save them. He tried to become the Green Ninja, despite swearing against it because he wanted to stay by (Y/N)'s side, but the golden weapons wouldn't react to him. He thought that if he could become the Green Ninja, he could bring (Y/N) back to life, so instead of accepting things as they were, he set off to find my father's tomb, and consequently died."
Everyone was quiet, processing these depressing events. No one would know of Wu's lies, but that didn't matter now, did it? The past was in the past, and he really did wish Morro would just move on and be with you.
"Don't worry, Sensei. We'll rescue Lloyd and even put Morro to rest so he can be with (Y/N) again." Kai announces.
Jay and Cole nod, "we might not have our powers, but we won't go down without a fight."
Zane smiles, whispering to himself, "I would like my family to be happy again." He wishes he knew you and Morro when you were alive. Part of him feels like he does.
#also yes; the old ice elemental was actually (Y/N)'s father; but he lost his power when (Y/N) inherited it#so he found out they died when his power suddenly came back#He was devastated; but passed his power on to Zane before dying; as he reminded him of his (Y/N)#so that kinda makes Zane either his uncle or father in law#depends on how you see it#ninjago#ninjago morro#morro x reader#ninjago zane#zane and reader#angst#death#Planty#oneshot

Collab Masterlist My Masterlist My Ko-Fi
---
“You cannot sit there and tell me that you think Batman is better than Iron Man. I refuse to believe it.” You huffed, crossing your arms across your chest and glaring daggers at his best friend.
This had become like a routine to Kaminari, ever since he’d started working at the bookstore, which had been almost a year ago.
He took his lunch break at the same time most days, anxiously hoping you had a break at the same time as well. It wasn’t because he thought you were cute (he totally did, honestly), he just enjoyed your company. You had some loud and unique opinions on a lot of things, and he was thoroughly entertained when you went off like this.
“Well they’re both billionaires with no special powers, just a lot of cool gadgets, right?” Sero pointed out, leaning back in his chair with his arms folded behind his head, his bento sitting forgotten on the table.
“You’re right. But Tony Stark has a sense of humor. Batman is such a stick in the mud.” You made a face from your spot across from them, your chopsticks resting over your cup noodles, the utensil keeping the lid closed so they would cook.
“Yeah, but in terms of physical strength, Bruce Wayne has got Tony beat.” Sero sat forward, picking up his chopsticks again. “Tony relies on his tech. In a hand to hand fight, Batman wins every time.”
“Tony is smarter, though.” You sighed. “Look, do I need to direct you to read the Civil War series? It’s only like 7 issues. I can lend them to you.”
“It’s got Spider-Man in it.” Kaminari supplied helpfully. “He’s your favorite.”
Sero chuckled. “Yeah, okay. Maybe it’ll change my mind.”
“Trust me. Batman is lame, he’s got some interesting villains though.” You finally moved to eat your ramen. “What about you, Kaminari? Any opinions?”
Shrugging, he finished off the last bit of rice in his bento. “I don’t know, I’m not huge into comic books. I like Deadpool, though.”
“That’s so on brand.” Sero chuckled. “He’s a ridiculous dumbass, just like you.”
“Hey!”
“Listen, Deadpool is probably one of the funniest antiheroes. He breaks the fourth wall so often, it’s my favorite thing.” You grinned at him. “I think it’s a perfect choice.”
Kaminari could feel the blush creeping up his neck at your words. You thought he was funny. “Thanks, Y/N.”
Clearing his throat, Sero stood up. “My break’s over. Can you check on the YA section when you’re back on, Kami? Some kids were in here earlier and I think they moved all the Twilight books around.” His teasing grin told him that Sero had not missed the way he’d reacted to what you’d said to him.
“Sure thing, boss.” He gave him a salute. “I’ve got like 10 minutes left.”
Sero packed up his bento and shoved it back in the breakroom fridge and left, leaving Kaminari alone with you.
Kaminari opened his mouth, spitting out the first thing that came to his mind. “But here’s the real question.” He pointed at you with his chopsticks. “Team Edward or Team Jacob?”
--
Kaminari was crouching down, putting the last copies of ‘Breaking Dawn’ back on the shelf when someone walked up to him.
“If she’s Team Edward you’re going to have to call up Aoyama and ask him to hook you up with some body glitter.”
He glanced towards his right, smiling at the scuffed black boots belonging to his other best friend, Shinsou.
Kaminari stood, staring at the cat sticker stuck to the side of the reusable coffee cup that his perpetually tired friend always had with him. His gaze then flicked to his face, his customary grin back on his lips. “You think he can help?”
Rolling his eyes, the purple haired man shifted on his feet. “Of course. He works for some makeup place, I bet they have loads of glittery shit.”
Humming, Denki let his gaze move back to the shelf, making sure everything looked okay. He threw his arm around Shinsou and began walking back to his own section (he was in charge of The Classics, okay?) leaning into the taller man. “I’ll pick you up some black eyeliner while I’m at it.”
“Please do, I’m almost out.” He snarked, before his smirk fell and he sighed. “Look, you need to do something about this crush you have on Y/N.”
“I do not have to do a thing, my friend. I am happily content sitting over here and pining away quietly.” Kaminari threw his arm out dramatically. “Leave me be.”
“Quietly?” Shinsou snorted. “Look, man, I just mean, I’ve been seeing Monoma hanging around her a lot, I just don’t want you to miss your chance.”
Kaminari stopped walking. “Monoma? But he works in the reference section, where they sell those ‘for dummies’ books!”
“Maybe he read ‘Flirting for Dummies’ and now he has a clue. You should look into it yourself.” Shinsou’s raised eyebrow caused Kaminari’s frown to deepen.
“I know how to flirt, Shinsou.” Huffing, he crossed his arms over his chest. “Don’t you need to go back to Science Fiction and get some work done?”
Sipping his coffee, he fixed Kaminari with a look. “Since I am such a wonderful friend, you’re going to swap me on Saturday and work my section, which is conveniently right next to Manga and Comics, where Y/N will be. You are going to make a move or so help me, I am going to beat you over the head with a copy of ‘Wuthering Heights’.”
“Why that one? Why not something longer, like ‘Don Quixote’?”
“Do you want it to hurt?” Shinsou asked, looking entirely done with his shit. “You’re ridiculous. Just do something, otherwise Monoma might get a date before you do.”
Kaminari cursed under his breath. The thought of you laughing and smiling at Monoma’s terrible jokes rubbed him the wrong way. “Fine. I’ll think of something.”
Seemingly satisfied, Shinsou patted him on the shoulder. “I believe in you.”
—
“How come you and Sero always have these fancy looking bentos for lunch?” You asked, sliding into the seat across from him.
Kaminari paused with his rice halfway to his mouth and looked up. “Our roommate. He’s like a mother hen, he always packs us lunch.”
Looking impressed, you raised an eyebrow. “He sounds like a keeper.”
Chuckling, Kaminari sat back in his chair. “Yeah, he’s a handful, but under his extremely aggressive exterior he’s a good guy.” He gestured to your ramen. “Maybe I can get him to make you one. All I have to do is tell him you eat cup noodles for lunch every day and he’ll have a heart attack.”
“I like my ramen, okay? It makes me feel like Naruto.” You raised your arms and grinned. “Believe it!”
Rolling his eyes fondly, he turned back to his lunch, poking at his tamagoyaki. He’d been working in the section beside you all day, listening to you gush over the newest shipment of manga you’d received, shoving books at him and making recommendations. He’d been trying to work up the courage all day to get off his ass and ask you out, and he was failing spectacularly.
“You know, if you want to be like Naruto, you should be eating tonkatsu miso with the little narutomaki in it.”
You blinked at him, looking surprised. “Yeah, you’re probably right.”
This was it. His chance. “We should go get the real thing sometime.” He swallowed thickly, his palms sweating. “Like, maybe tomorrow night?” He closed his eyes, waiting for you to respond.
“Kaminari, are you asking me on a date?”
The fondness in your tone had him opening his eyes to see your expression. You were blushing, biting on your bottom lip as you stared at him.
“I mean, yeah. A date. If you want to, I mean.”
He was seconds away from backpedaling, his heart climbing up his throat and on the verge of escaping his body. The anticipation was killing him.
His nervousness and fear of rejection was all for naught. Your face lit up, a genuine smile gracing your lips. It was the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen.
“I would love that.”
A breath he didn’t realize he was holding escaped his lips. “Yeah, okay. Awesome.”
You giggled, leaning your elbow on the table, resting your cheek against your palm. “Did you think I’d say no?”
Feeling a little ridiculous, he blushed and nodded. “I was worried you might. I’m an idiot and you’re...you.”
You scoffed, kicking him under the table lightly. “You’re not an idiot, Kaminari. To be honest, I thought you’d never ask. I guess Shinsou wasn’t lying.”
“About what?” He sat up straight, frowning. “I’m going to kick his ass. What did he say?”
Snorting, you shook your head. “He might have mentioned that you liked me. I wasn’t sure though.”
“Are you kidding? Was I not being obvious enough?”
“You flirt with everyone, I didn’t think I was special.” You teased. “I’m glad he was right, though.” You turned back to your noodles.
“You are though. At least you are to me.” Grinning, he nudged your foot with his. “I’m going to date the hell out of you, Y/N. Just wait and see.”
His heart swooped in his chest when you looked back at him across the table. “I’m looking forward to it.”

Snivel While You Work

Relationships: Jungkook x Namjoon x Taehyung Genre: fluff Rating: General Audiences Word Count: ~1.1k
Tags: Fluff, Slice of Life, Happy Relationship, Bets & Wagers, Video Gaming
Summary: Taehyung should know better to make bets he may not win.
A/N: Written for Taehyung’s birthday 2021.
A/N 2: This also fills my final request of 2021, “i wish you had died” for @i-live-so-i-love
“No, no, no—” Taehyung swore loudly, tossing his controller onto the bed and crossing his arms over his chest. Namjoon laughed, his grin bright enough that it dimpled his cheek.
“You lose.”
“Come on,” Taehyung whined. “Give me one more chance. Me and Jungkook are technically tied.”
Namjoon hesitated, looking at Jungkook, who pouted. “Hey, I won fair and square.”
“And you lost once against me,” Taehyung whined.
“Honestly, the longer we argue over who is going to clean up, the messier things are going to get,” Namjoon said.
“One more game,” Taehyung pleaded. “It’s only fair.”
Jungkook groaned. “Fine. One more.”
He took the controller from Namjoon and took switched spots with him, settling onto the bed next to Taehyung.
“You know, you might have been smarter just to suggest you and me split the chores,” Jungkook said as they started another round. “That way there wouldn’t have been a chance of you losing completely.”
“Yeah, but if I beat you I don’t have to do any cleaning. Jimin and Hobi-hyung were out drinking last night,” Taehyung argued, his eyes wide as he focused on the screen. “I’m not cleaning up that mess.”
“It can’t be that bad,” Namjoon argued. He rose, sinking down to crawl under the screen’s view so he wouldn’t interrupt the two playing. He cracked open the door, sticking his head out.
“Oof,” he grunted, making a whistling noise as he sucked in through his teeth.
“That bad?” Taehyung worried. He swore softly when Jungkook’s character took the lead.
“Oh it’s… Bad,” Namjoon said. He crawled onto the bed carefully behind them. “I pity whoever loses this match.”
“It’s going to be Taehyungie-hyung,” Jungkook teased, his nose crinkling up as his thumbs pounded at the controller.
“It’s going to be Jungkook,” Taehyung responded, his teeth bared and gritted.
The two kept neck and neck as the game progressed, damage mounting for each player’s character.
Taehyung could feel his heart squeezing into his throat as the final seconds of the round clicked down and Jungkook’s points kept ticking upward. When the deep red ‘Game Over’ filled the screen, paired with a very definite ‘You are dead’ on Taehyung’s side, he swore. He looked around the room, desperate for something to blame for his loss. When he found nothing, he dropped the controller on the bed and pouted, slumping back against the headboard.
“You have an advantage,” he sulked.
“Oh? Is that so?” Jungkook asked, his mouth curling up into a smile despite Taehyung’s mood.
“You know this game better.”
“We’ve played it literally the same amount of times. If anything you and me had an advantage over Joon-hyung, who beat us both pretty squarely.”
“Beginner’s luck,” Namjoon said, shrugged. He clapped Taehyung on the knee. “Whelp. Best get to cleaning. It needs to be done before Jin-hyung comes home or he’s gonna have all of our balls as trophies.”
“Why’d you promise him we’d clean anyways?” Taehyung whined, pulling his knee out of Namjoon’s grip.
“Because he’s cleaned for us these past few weeks. He’s had a rough time lately, it’s the least we can do.”
Taehyung rolled his eyes deeply. He knew Namjoon was right, but it still sucked to lose. “Then why don’t you clean for him?”
Namjoon grinned. “I offered. “You suggested a game. The punishment always goes to the one that suggests it, don’t you know that by now?”
Taehyung curled his lip up, wanting to say something else but knowing he shouldn’t. Sulking or not, he didn’t want to start a fight with his boyfriends. “I wish you’d died,” he mumbled instead, rising from the bed. He shuffled forward, hesitating before opening the door.
The dorm was far worse than he’d imagined. There were clothes, empty bottles, and empty food containers everywhere. It would take hours to clean on his own. Taehyung groaned dramatically, slumping against the door frame.
“This is insane,” he grumbled.
“It’s a mess,” Jungkook agreed, coming up behind him. Taehyung looked over at him, his chin wrinkled in a pout that spread his mouth downward.
“You expect me to clean this whole thing by myself?”
“You lost the game.” Jungkook shrugged. He slipped past Taehyung and wandered into the kitchen, dodging piles of clothes and containers as he did. Taehyung watched him open the fridge and pull out a container of food. He stood at the counter while he ate, scrolling through his phone.
Taehyung wandered out, picking a corner of the living room (not like any was particularly cleaner than others) and beginning to clean. He glanced up from the pile of clothes he was sorting when he heard movement in the kitchen. Jungkook had finished his food and was heading back into the bedroom.
“Hey!” Taehyung wailed, stepping in front of Jungkook’s path.
Jungkook’s bottom lip jutted out, his brows rising in confusion. “Huh?” He asked, innocent written over his features.
Taehyung glared despite the urge to kiss his boyfriend’s pretty mouth. He jutted his finger toward the kitchen.
Jungkook looked back. “What? Did you want some?”
“No,” Taehyung stressed. “The mess. You left your garbage.”
Jungkook looked back again. “Ah, I guess I did.” He smiled sheepishly at Taehyung. “Sorry about that.” He turned and headed back into the kitchen, grabbing his garbage and throwing it into the can. “There. All better,” he said as he walked back.
Taehyung glared. “I really wish you’d died,” he grumbled, grabbing a pile of wrappers and heading into the kitchen with them as Jungkook headed back into their bedroom.
It felt like he’d been cleaning for hours when Taehyung heard the door open again. He glanced back, seeing Jungkook and Namjoon step out of the room.
“Did you need something?” Taehyung grumbled, carrying clothes to a growing pile he’d created for dirty laundry.
“You’ve gotten so much done,” Jungkook said in awe. He came around, taking the clothes from Taehyung’s hands. “I’ll get the rest of the laundry and get it started.”
“It looks like you still need to sweep, I’ll do that,” Namjoon said, grabbing the nearby broom. Taehyung stood still for a moment, confusion written on his face. “Wh—"
Namjoon smiled sweetly, ignoring Taehyung’s confused expression as he set to work sweeping the mess of the dorm’s kitchen. Jungkook buzzed around him, snagging clothes and other fabric items for washing.
It took Taehyung’s brain a moment to catch up. They were helping. He smiled softly, leaning on the wall for a moment to take a breath. They’d won fair and square (despite his complaints) and they were still helping.
“Thank you,” Taehyung whispered when Namjoon passed by him. Namjoon paused and turned, smiling.
“We love you.” He kissed Taehyung gently and handed him the dustpan. “Help me sweep?”
“Of course.” Taehyung headed into the kitchen with him, pausing a moment to pull Jungkook into a deep kiss as well. Jungkook smiled brightly, his nose wrinkling.
“Still wish we’d died?” He teased.
“Never,” Taehyung whispered.

“so what’s the plan for today, sung?” haechan says a little too loud for jisung’s comfort. the younger looks about, bug-eyed, for people who could have heard. “dude, that sounded like we plan on killing someone.” haechan just shrugs and pops the gum in his mouth. jisung shoves the boy lightly, causing him to choke. sniggers erupt from the group of boys that sit in the farthest corner of the lunchroom. the dreamies are what they call themselves, though everyone finds it a bit funny. “what was that for, you brat?!” haechan’s friends erupt in laughter, causing the nearby table to look over. the table that just so happened to be where your friend group sat. jisung makes eye contact with you and smiles. you send a timid one back before your friends roll their eye at the group’s antics and begin to leave. yeri takes your arm and pulls you away from the table before you can say anything about it.
science drags on so you ask to use the restroom to see if you can find jisung in the halls. not the most educated choice but you have to at least speak to the boy. the hall pass in your hand is your ticket to getting out of trouble with any teacher, and the excuse of you being new. passing the rows of lockers proves no sight of the boy you seek until you get to the last ones near the back entrance of the school. There was jisung and his friends at the end, talking about some game while huddled around what you presumed to be a switch. you stop abruptly, which causes your sneakers to squeak. all six of the boys look up at you with eagle eyes. you’re a deer caught in headlights and not a word is uttered for a good minute. “you better not rat us out, goody two shoes.” haechans’ the first to speak. you shake your head and walk up to them. “i’m skipping class too so it really wouldn’t bring me any luck to do that.” they all look at you confused. “yeah yeah why would i skip class i get it. i’m looking for jisung, actually.” the boy in question turns red as a tomato and starts to stutter. the others snicker at his flustered state. you turn to jisung and smile sweetly. “i know my friends are always rude to you guys but i wanna get to know you. sorry for their behavior, also. they don’t know when to keep to themselves.” your face is now red as well, mostly because up close, jisung is absolutely breathtaking. “that’s for sure.” haechan’s mumble makes its way to your ears but is quickly muffled by jaemin smacking his arm.
in the next few weeks, you got a lot closer to jisung and his friends much to your friends’ dismay. “they’re all trouble, y/n. why do you hang around them?” you roll your eyes at her. “they’re just high school boys, they literally laughed at a fart noise the other day. they aren’t any harm to anyone.” she scoffs at you. “i thought you’d be at least a little smarter than this, but apparently not. i can’t be friends with someone who hangs out with unscholarly people.” you’re taken aback at her statement. “whatever yeri, if you don’t wanna be friends anymore then i don’t care, have fun being a bore.” you hurried away before she could say anything back to you. you were glad she didn’t want to speak with you anymore, all she ever talked about was school. you needed to find jisung.
in the next few weeks, you got a lot closer to jisung and his friends much to your friends’ dismay. “whatever yeri, if you don’t wanna be friends anymore then i don’t care, have fun being a bore.” you hurried away before she could say anything back to you. you were glad she didn’t want to speak with you anymore, all she ever talked about was school. you needed to find jisung.
you knew to find him in the back of the gym around this time of day. it was oddly quiet in there today, probably due to them not wanting to get caught for the third time this week. “jisung.” a small reply was heard along with the laughter of his friends. you walk over to where they were sitting and sit next to jisung. you lean against his shoulder and he reads you instantly. “what’s wrong?” you sigh and shuffle to get more comfortable. “yeri and i are no longer friends. all she does is be rude about the fact that i’m hanging out with you guys and i got tired of it. so she said she didn’t want to be friends with me and then she called me dumb! the audacity of her.” all six boys bust into giggles. the look on your face is unamused, and the boys only laugh more at it. “listen, y/n, she was probably right about us. we are trouble. i bet you didn’t know jisung beat up some kid yesterday because he was talking about you.” you snap your head to jisung, who is sheepishly looking down. “he was saying gross things! i can’t let someone speak of you like that, y/n.” you sigh and force him to look up at you. “jisung, you don’t have to protect me.” he pouts cutely, “but i do! i have to.” you blush at the thought of him protecting you. “but why?” now it’s jisung’s turn to blush. “i like you…” it comes out as a mumble and you almost don’t catch it. the boys whoop and holler while the two of you sit in each other’s flustered presence. you scoot closer to jisung and whisper in his ear, “i like you too, you know.”
the next days are filled with teasing from the group and sweet gestures from jisung. holding hands in the hallway, kissing at your locker (which more often than not turns into making out in the janitor’s closet), and him buying your lunch.
“y/n!” an unfamiliar voice rings in the hall and all of you turn to see a guy running up to you. you recognize him from your science class, but you’ve never really spoken with him, so you’re just as confused as they are. “this is for you.” he turns to look at the rest of the group with a look of disapproval before turning back to you. “uh, thanks i guess. what’s your name again?” his face flashes disappointment before returning to a happy one. “ilhoon, from science class?” you nod in agreement before he winks at you and walks down the hall. “what the fuck was that?” jisung’s deep voice grumbles in his chest, the vibrations reaching you due to his figure hugging yours. “i honestly don’t know, sungie. lemme read this note.” you open up the letter and begin to read out loud. “this is for your eyes only, cutie. i know we haven’t spoken much, but i want to get to know you so how about we go on a date?” jisung scoffs at that. “the way this kid thinks he’s getting a date with you. i’ll take care of it baby.” you point him a look. “park jisung, i can handle my own thank you. i’ll just tell him that i’m dating you and he’ll back off.” jisung stays silent but rolls his eyes in response.
jisung keeps seeing that kid in the hallway, and everytime they make eye contact, he receives a scowl from him. the gall this kid has, to think that you’d go on a date with him. finally managing to corner him, jisung asks what he thinks he’s doing. “i’m trying to ask y/n out, park. now get out of my way.” scoffing, jisung yanks the boy’s arm. “now listen here, she’s taken. by me. so don’t even think about it ilhoon.” “i’m not scared of you, ya’know! you think you’re tough but you’re not.”
“i think you should shut up if you know what’s good for you.” haechan’s quick response makes his presence known, along with the rest of the dreamies. ilhoon rolls his eyes. “this is between me and jisung, brat.” haechan tsks at the boy, “well, you asked for it kid.” ilhoon looks confused before a harsh punch is delivered to his cheek. his head whips around from the force and he doesn’t have time to recover before jisung is swinging his other arm at him. a sickening ‘crack!’ is heard by the group as the boy wails in pain. “definitely a broken nose. good job sung.” jaemin pats him on the back as they walk away. jisung looks over his shoulder and yells out, “don’t talk to y/n again, got it?” he doesn’t bother to acknowledge a response from ilhoon.
lunch is busy as always, though the table that your little group sits at is in the back corner of the lunchroom. it provides a nice space away from everyone else where you can all enjoy each other’s presence. “jisung why the fuck did you break this kid’s nose?” your harsh voice cuts the air as soon as you are close to the table. his face goes pale while the rest of the boys burst into laughter. “i, he was trying to get with you! i’m your boyfriend and he was talking shit about you being with me!” you sigh in guilt and scoot yourself close to him. “sungie, you’re my boyfriend ok? i don’t want to date anyone else. i just don’t want you getting in trouble.” he blushes at your words of affirmation and nuzzles his head into your neck. the rest of lunch goes by smoothly, and before you leave the boys go out to smoke (even though you always nag at them to stop). “how many times have i asked you guys to stop killing your lungs?” laughs all come from their mouths as they walk past you. jisung gives you a slightly guilty look before joining his friends in their endeavors. you sigh and stand with them until they finish, which doesn’t take longer than 10 minutes. jisung walks you to your class before heading to his, a sweet gesture he always did.
word got around that he broke a kid’s nose, and he does get into trouble for it. three days suspension and four days of detention after that. you know he will be skipping detention just as much as the principal so you fail to understand why he was even given detention.
the first day he’s out was boring to you, but you went to his house right after school with the other boys and got to hang out. the second and third days were boring as hell, but the day jisung returned was very… interesting. Jisung hadn’t entered the classroom yet this morning, so you sat alone next to his desk in the back. ilhoon enters the classroom and searched for someone, and when they aren’t there he heads straight for you. “hey y/n.” you give him a blank-faced look. “uh yeah?” he smirks a little, though it’s hard for him presumably because of the broken nose. “now that park is ya’know, facing the consequences for being an asshole, do you wanna go on a date?” you almost cackle in his face, but you keep it to yourself. what in the world is he thinking? “listen ilhoon, since apparently, you didn’t get the memo that jisung punched onto your face, i’m gonna have to spell it out for you. i do not want to go on a date with you, and i never will. you really could’ve avoided getting your nose fucked up if you had just realized that not every girl in this school wants to fuck you.” he scoffs at you and grabs your arm, squeezing rather hard. “listen here, brat. you’re not so bad as you think you are just because you’re dating jisung. so i’m gonna ask you again. are you gonna cooperate with me or do i have to train you to be a good girl?” he’s suddenly jerked back, and hard. the collar of his shirt chokes him and jisung slams him to the ground. while he’s gasping for air, jisung leans down close enough to breathe on his face. “listen here, brat. my girlfriend is not a dog to train, and more importantly, she isn’t yours and won’t be. ever. so stop trying, and if you ever so much as breath in her direction wrong i will do so much more than break your stupid fucking nose, got it?” ilhoon nods so fast you think his brain is knocking around in his head before he gets up and sits in his seat. jisung scoffs at the action and sits down, taking your arm in his hold gently, checking for injury. “are you ok baby? he didn’t hurt you did he?” you shake your head before kissing his nose for reassurance. “no, i’m fine, thank you.” he pecks your lips before turning to face the board, just in time for the teacher to walk in.
maybe jisung was a bad influence, but that didn’t stop you from loving him. and in the end, jisung did get you to be his way before the end of the year.

tell me what you want - jack ahcan/roman ahcan
i really hope you guy like this!! thank you to my anon for this amazing idea. if you like it let me know! im really interested to see what people favorite parts are. let me know what you think!
word count: ~11k
__
You swallow hard and look over your shoulder again, feet dangling above the water over Prior Lake. You grip the edge of the dock as you mumble just loud enough for your best friend to hear you, “he’s doing it again.”
Claire’s head whips around as she practically drops her sandwich into the water, food muffling her fiery response, “I’ll rip his dick off, I swear. Just give me the word.”
You laugh at her crude phrase but she knows you’d never give her the go ahead. She knew about the ups and downs though that your relationship had been through in the short time you two had been together. Roman had a hard time adjusting to the dating life whereas you went in full force. Opposite ends of the spectrum for very opposite people.
“We’re not beating anyone up today. Plus, I don’t think Brock would appreciate you seriously maiming someone on his property. Not the way to get a date with him, I’m guessing.”
Claire’s cheeks redden despite the slight sunburn they had and she knows she’s caught, “who said I wanted a date with Boeser? He’s gone half the year anyways.”
You smirk as you nudge her immediately, “you’re such a liar! You cry about how much you love him every time you get drunk and any time we’re here late at night you sit right by him. You two drunkenly flirt more than my boyfriend and I flirt period.”
“Yeah, well maybe if you’d dated the right Ahcan brother then we’d both be happily taken by now.”
Your jaw drops but your argument gets stuck in your throat. She gives you a look that dares you to tell her she’s wrong but you can’t. Jack was taken when you started dating Roman though so the opportunity wasn’t even there. Nowadays though… you let yourself look over at the aforementioned boy and watch as he laughs easily with Brock and a couple of their other friends.
Your own cheeks burn hot when he glances over and catches you staring, but he only offers a smirk in return. He looks for a second longer than he probably should, but eventually turns back to his own conversation. The little uptick in his smile let’s you know he’s aware you’re embarrassed and he loved every second of it.
“What the hell was that?” Claire asks, flicking your shoulder, “I was just kidding when I said it, but what the hell was that?”
“I… I have no clue. That’s never happened before,” you whisper, voice too stuck to say it any louder.
You turn around again and face the lake. You needed to brush it off. He was your boyfriend’s brother and that was a serious no fly zone. Even if he was more mature and nicer than the one you called your own.
—
“Why are you mad now?” You ask, rubbing your hand on your face.
You’re aware of how defensive your stance is but you really don’t care. You’re leaned back against the counters in Brock’s house, arms crossed over your chest, and staring down the boy standing across the island from you. You had no idea why he had an attitude and you really weren’t in the mood. He’d been difficult all day and you just wanted to relax.
“Why am I mad? You’re kidding, right? You don’t pay attention at all. I’m glad you live in such a daydream while I’m out here trying to be social and explain to people why my girlfriend doesn’t even hang out with me at my own brother’s house,” he explains, or so he thinks.
You scoff and look away from him, trying to keep your patience, “you’re mad because I didn’t follow you around like a puppy today? Is that seriously what this is about? And I’d be willing to bet no one asked you why I’m not hanging off you at every minute of the day.”
He jaw clenches as he realizes you’ve caught the embellishment in his story, “you hardly said a word to me.”
“The street goes both ways, Roman.”
He knows he has no upper hand and shakes his head, coming around island suddenly. You’re not sure what he’s going to do, but he moves toward you and opens the fridge to grab another drink. He looks like he’s about to say something as he closes the door but opts for a kiss to the side of your head before making his way to the backyard again. It was always a whirlwind with him.
You sigh, closing your eyes and letting your head drop forward. You were pretty sure dating wasn’t supposed to be this tiring, but you didn’t really have much reference either other than a high school boyfriend who broke up with you because you were “too much smarter than him”.
The sliding door opens again and you look up quickly, trying to pull yourself together. No one needed to know how often you and Ro fought. Jack happens to be stepping in and he gives you a soft smile, taking in your demeanor immediately.
“You okay? You look a little upset.”
He realized it far sooner than his brother ever could and something about that makes your heart stutter for a second. You shrug though, trying to play things off.
“Yeah, I’m okay. Maybe a little too much sun today but I’ll be alright,” you smile, watching as he makes his way to the fridge like his brother had just done.
“Did you need another drink? Water, white claw?” He pops his head back out, noticing you didn’t have anything in hand. Of course he was nice enough to offer and think of someone other than just himself.
“I’d love a white claw,” you nod, pushing off the counter and dropping the black cloud Roman had left over your head. Lake days were short enough and you weren’t spending any more of this one moping around because of what he’d said.
Jack hands you a drink, grabbing his own and squeezing by you. Except there was plenty of room and he easily could have gone around the island the way he’d come from. He lets his hand brush your hip with a whispered “excuse me” as he retraces his steps towards the door. He slides it back open but looks over at you again.
“I’m guessing my brother’s the reason you’re all holed up in here. I know he’s an ass, but try and shake it off. We all know you’re a good girl who tries hard in that relationship. Now, you coming along? We just got the fire going.”
You shiver a little at the phrase he calls you but you pray he didn’t notice it. You do note that he always seemed to have endless patience and you wonder if he took it all when he was born and left none for his younger brother.
You smile as you sneak by him but he politely keeps his hands to himself this time. You find yourself wishing he wouldn’t though and mentally scold yourself. The bonfire is double what it had been and you stop two steps out onto the deck.
Jack’s hand finds the small of your back as he leans down near your ear, “come on, if he’s a dick then you can just hang out with me.”
You look at him skeptically, not sure why he wanted to hang out with you so much suddenly, so the bold part of you questions it, “are you sure? I don’t want you to have to worry about me all night.”
He smiles and holds up his pinky, “yes, I’ll even pinky promise. Just shoot me a look and you’re all mine for the rest of the night.”
“Okay, I can do that. Thanks, Jack,” you smile back at him finally and head towards the bonfire, spotting your boyfriend.
He has a slightly sour look on his face as he stares at the fire from where he’s standing. His words from earlier bounce in your head so you make your way over, wrapping your arm around his waist and taking the spot next to him.
“Sorry for blowing up in there,” he mumbles, wrapping an arm tight around your shoulders.
You lean your head against him and stare at the fire, knowing it wouldn’t be the last time, “it’s okay.”
But was it? You find yourself thinking it over, tossing the words he'd said and the past fights he’d picked around until it all jumbled together. He shifts after a couple minutes and you’re brought back to reality, only to find yourself locking eyes across the flames with Jack.
He raises his eyebrows, a question for you, but you give him a soft smile in return. You were good… for now. It doesn’t stop him from constantly glancing over and checking in the rest of the night though. You were glad someone was at least.
—
You luckily never needed that pinky promise rescue from Jack and Roman seemed to mellow out after that for a couple weeks.
It was deep in the heart of summer now and the days were as long as you could possibly stretch them. Your tan was darker, your hair lighter, and you didn’t want anything dragging you down. Going to the bar for the night seemed like a great idea so you’d agreed easily.
Getting ready was easy. Meeting Roman at his house and talking with his mom for so long that you were almost late getting to Brock and Jack’s place to all leave at the same time was easy. It all seemed like the night would go by easily and you’d have plenty of fun.
You just didn’t expect to have such an easy and fun night with the person you ended up with.
You’re glad you didn’t have to drive and you take a deep breath before the group of you enter the bar. Roman had seemed to shift into party mode in the car and you know that means he’ll be out all night. You see an opportunity right before you though.
“Jack!” You call him, watching as he turns around with a smile.
“Yes?”
You try to bite back your smile as you hold your hand out in front of you, pinky first. He laughs and wraps his finger around yours, turning and pulling you along the sidewalk behind him. You giggle a little and fall into step next to him, letting go first.
“Yeah, I got you. Just give me the look,” he reminds you, reaching forward and holding the door open, “ladies first.”
“Thank you,” you say, blushing a bit for reasons you’re completely unaware of as you duck into the bar.
It’s not a bad night by any means. Everyone is in a good mood and getting along, but you manage to get tired quickly. Your stomach rumbling is the final straw and you turn to your boyfriend, lacing your fingers in his to get his attention.
“Yeah, baby?” He asks, leaning closer so he can hear whatever you’re about to say.
“I’m hungry. Can we leave?” You pout a little, hoping it’ll win him over easily.
He groans, giving you a glimpse at the attitude he’d dropped the last couple weeks, “I really wasn’t ready yet. We haven’t been here that long.”
“They don’t have food though…”
“So why didn’t you eat before we left then? You knew we were going out tonight,” he says, looking at you like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
You’re about to plead your case again when you look across the group and catch Jack’s attention. The lightbulb seems to go off then and your eyes go wide. You nod slightly towards his brother and he moves quickly, heading your way.
“Never mind, I’ll make Jack take me.”
Roman laughs but it’s cut short when his brother steps in front of him, giving a quick punch to his shoulder.
“You two behaving over here?” Jack asks, having no clue what you’d just said to Roman.
“I’m hungry,” you blurt out, “and someone isn’t ready to leave.”
“I can take you. I’m not really feeling it tonight anyways,” Jack shrugs, looking to his younger brother for permission.
Roman’s eyebrows furrow a bit but sending you with someone he trusted probably wasn’t the worst idea, “yeah whatever. We’re staying at your place tonight anyways so we’ll end up in the same spot.”
“Have fun, okay?” You turn Roman towards you, leaning up to kiss him quickly.
Jack looks away as you do, not wanting to see it for some reason that night. He finishes the last sip of his water you had no clue he had and sets the cup on the high top table next to him. Roman hands you off to his brother but not before giving you a quick slap on the ass.
“Not in public,” Jack corrects him, pushing Roman square in the chest gently.
The younger boy lets out a laugh and swats his brother’s hand away, “she doesn’t mind it.”
You bite your tongue over how wrong he is and push Jack’s arm until he starts moving towards the door, looking back at Roman as you do, “I’ll see you later. Try and behave please.”
He throws a wink your way and let’s you go without even thinking twice. You’re glad you thought to make that deal with Jack before walking in and you’re equally thankful that he could tell you needed help when you did.
“Where to? What are you hungry for?” He asks, grabbing his keys from his pocket, but opening your door for you.
You’re happily surprised by his action but you slip into the front seat regardless. He makes his way around and takes the driver's seat, giving you an expectant look.
“I have no clue, Jack. Just pick somewhere,” you giggle, buckling up and settling into the seat.
“Taco Bell it is,” he smiles as he puts the car into drive.
You gasp a little, excited that he picked there of all places. You take advantage of being the front passenger and lean forward, turning the radio on to a low volume. The music floats through the space and makes you feel more calm than you have been in a while.
You glance over at Jack, “can we all go skating this summer? I know it’s a weird time to go but I haven’t skated with you guys since we were kids.”
Jack smiles over at you, his heart thumping from the innocent question, “yeah of course we can. Brock has some extra ice time at one of the rinks by my parent’s place.”
You sit back, happy and a little buzzed, feeling on top of the world. Jack drives smoothly and you try not to watch his arm flex as he turns the wheel with one hand.
The night is almost too easy after you leave the bar. Jack doesn’t force conversation and you’re surprisingly happy to just hang out with him whether you’re talking or not. He refuses to let you pay for your food and when he parks the car, the two of you end up talking for hours after.
You both end up having to sneak back into Brock’s house, but luckily for you Roman never wakes up when you slip into bed that night.
—
You kick yourself the next morning, wondering why you were wide awake at 8am. You’d only gotten five hours of sleep, if you were lucky, but somehow your body decided that was enough. You sigh and slip out from under the covers, tossing your hair in a bun before heading for the kitchen. You were well versed in where Brock kept the coffee.
You quietly make your way to the kitchen but you’re greeted with the smell of freshly brewed coffee and your boyfriend's brother in nothing but shorts and a sleepy smile. You suck in a breath and offer a smile back, heading right for the coffee pot he was standing near.
“Good morning,” Jack mumbles, his voice sounding as sleepy as he looked. He runs a hand through his hair quickly but it does him no good.
You laugh quietly, pulling a mug out of the cupboard and filling it up, “morning, sleepy head. You sure you’re ready to be up?”
He lets out a little giggle that makes you turn and look at him. It was so unguarded and cute that you don’t even stop yourself from trying to block it out of your memory. You want to remember that one.
“I’m not sure why I’m up so early but if I am then coffee and dock fishing it is.”
You nod, not the least bit surprised at his plans, but you can appreciate the simplicity of them in the early morning hours. The fridge holds the coffee creamer you loved and you wonder if Brock even realized it when he bought it now or if it was just habit. Regardless you put some in your cup, knowing Jack was watching your every move.
“Jack,” you say suddenly, a little smirk dancing across your lips as he looks at you with raised eyebrows, “I’ve been meaning to ask you this. I heard Roman used to always beat you in skating races. Is that true?”
He’s just about to take a sip from his mug when you ask but he hesitates, shooting you a wicked grin, “he’s a liar. He didn’t always beat me.”
“Oh, not always?” You tease, not sure where the tone even comes from, but you like it.
He matches the energy easily though, quipping back, “I’m older though so I’m better… at everything.”
Your brain blanks for a second but the way he looks at you pulls a thousand thoughts forward at once. You blush instantly, turning your attention to your coffee mug that suddenly had the most interesting design on it.
“Can dish it but can’t take it, huh? I see how it goes,” he nods, finishing his drink before you’d even taken a sip of yours. His comment strikes the competitive side in you quickly.
“Oh I can take it,” you say, blushing all over again as you hear the phrase come tumbling out of your mouth, “Uhm, I mean… just stop giving me that look! You know what I meant!”
He shrugs, trying to bite back the smile that was on his face, “hey, you started this. I just came through to finish it.”
Your jaw drops a little, ready to argue, but you’re not in time. He rinses his mug and sets it to the side. He keeps his eye on you as he heads for the back door, giving you one last big smirk before leaving you alone to watch him through the window as he heads for the dock.
You realize it sounds like a stupid scene out of a movie. You’re standing there, sipping coffee, watching a cute boy through the window, and having thoughts that you probably shouldn’t about him. A creak on the stairs brings you back to earth as your boyfriend’s arms wrap around you.
“Hi, beautiful. How’s your morning?”
—
You couldn’t lie and say you’d been on your game since that morning in the kitchen with Jack. He’d shook you up somehow after that but what was worse is that he seemed to be keeping to himself any time you were around. You couldn’t help but wonder if you’d done something wrong but Roman was making up for it at least.
A knock on your apartment door gets your attention a week after the “kitchen talk” as you’d dubbed it to your friends. Claire had all but lost her mind over the story and you had to reel her back in, begging her not to say a word to Brock.
Opening the door gives you a happy surprise when you find Roman on the other side with flowers and a coffee. You can’t help but smile at him and lean in to kiss him quickly.
“What’s all this for?” You ask, taking both things and heading for your kitchen.
He follows along, looking incredibly proud of himself, “you just have seemed off so I was hoping it might boost your mood a little.”
It’s a sweet gesture and you’re thankful that he still notices how you’re feeling even though the two of you had some bumps along the way lately. You set everything down without even bothering to grab a vase, opting to turn around and give him a big hug, wrapping your arms right around his neck.
He squeezes back, rubbing a hand up and down your back. You let out a deep breath you didn’t know you were holding and lay your head on his shoulder.
“I did need this. Thank you,” you say quietly as he sways the two of you back and forth.
He kisses your shoulder and keeps you close, “how was food with my brother the other night? I thought I heard you two in the kitchen the next morning.”
You’re glad you aren’t looking at him because your eyes go wide at what he must have heard, “oh, it was good. We got Taco Bell so I was pretty happy after that. He was up in the morning though, yeah.”
“I’m glad you two get along. I know he’s still figuring out how to be single again so sorry if he’s been bugging you lately. I don’t blame him for wanting to hang with you.”
You press your forehead against his shoulder, rethinking a lot of the time you’d spent with Jack lately. He was just trying to replace the whole his ex left. He had no real interest in you and you needed to remember that.
“He’s a cool guy. I don’t mind having him around,” you pull back, giving Roman a smile to let him know things were all good.
“Why don’t we just hang out here today? My plans are clear for you today,” he suggests, leaning down to kiss you.
You agree, knowing it was probably best to spend some time with your own boyfriend rather than his brother for once.
“Oh, we’re going ice skating tomorrow night by the way. Jack said you suggested it or something.”
You freeze, realizing that you had indeed asked. You just hadn’t expected him to remember or deliver on that promise. And just like that, you know you’ll have to play it cool again around him.
—
You had less than 24 hours to mentally prepare yourself to skate with the guys. You knew you couldn’t ignore Jack, and you really had no reason to, but you were nervous about seeing him again for some reason. You had been so distracted in fact that while you were cutting up chicken for your lunch earlier in the day you’d cut your finger bad enough to need a pretty decent sized bandaid right on your pointer finger.
You realize what a pain in the ass that is as you’re sitting on the bench at the rink, trying to lace up your skates and struggling with it. Roman had slipped his skates on quickly and you usually had no problem doing the same. Your finger hurt though and the bandaid kept getting caught up with the laces, causing your patience to start wearing thin. You’re ready to give up on it all when a familiar body sits next to you and pats your knee.
“Put it on my leg,” he says, seeing the struggle you were going through.
You look over at him and duck your head out of embarrassment, “I can tie my own skates. I’m just having some trouble.”
Jack laughs a little, grabbing your pant leg and pulling your leg over his thigh, “I know you can tie your own skates but it’s okay to ask for help every now and then too.”
You can’t even argue with that, opting to watch his hands quickly work your laces into place. You bite your lip, trying to pull your mind out of the gutter, but it doesn’t work very well. He finishes one skate and has the second one done sooner than you’d have liked it.
“You ready to get out there? I haven’t seen you skate in years,” he smiles as he stands, grabbing his gloves and stick from the bench.
“I’ve still got it,” you smile, picking up your own equipment and following him out onto the clean ice.
Not two strides out there and Roman stops hard in front of you, hitting you with enough of a snow shower to coat part of your pants. You look up, ready to smack him, but his brother beats you to it.
“Are you five years old again?” Jack reprimands, “give the girl a second to get her feet beneath her before you start acting like a jerk.”
You can’t help but laugh, covering your mouth and looking away. You’d never heard Jack talk to him like that and even Roman has a shocked look on his face.
“Don't agree with him!” Roman pouts at you, wrapping his arm around your shoulders and giving you a fake headlock.
You giggle, pushing him off and jokingly hiding behind Jack, “no way! At this rate you’re going to end up checking me into the end boards.”
Roman shakes his head as Jack lets out the same laugh you’d heard in the kitchen that may or may not be on a small loop in your head some days. You peak around Jack, knowing Roman wouldn’t do anything. You’re met with his smirk and his next words make your heart skip a little.
“Yeah, yeah, I know you like Jack better than me so you’re just using him as your defense. Don’t be mad if I score on you guys later though,” he shrugs and turns to skate off.
Jack turns to look at you and you just know your face tells the little scare you’d just had. He gives you a matching look and shakes his head a little.
“He’s just kidding. We’re good,” he tries to reassure you but it does the complete opposite.
He skates off then and you’re left standing at the blue line wondering what the hell he meant when he said you two were good. Good about what? You two hadn’t done anything wrong technically. You take a deep breath and start to skate, knowing you had to play it off. Things were fine.
—
“My team sucked, it’s not my fault!” Roman complains as he tosses his stuff in the trunk of Brock’s car.
You put your own stuff in after, reaching for his hand when yours are free, “it’s okay, Ro, we can’t all be winners.”
He turns and meets your grin with a tiny one of his own, “oh you’re all full of trouble today aren’t you?”
You nod and lean up to kiss him quickly. The little skate had turned into a competitive pick up game that had you all exhausted afterwards. Brock invited everyone over after and you jumped on the opportunity.
“You love it when I’m like this,” you mumble, leaning against him.
“Hey, don’t be gross in the parking lot,” Brock calls, “get in the car, kids.”
You blush at getting caught and climb in the backseat quickly. Jack turns around from the front seat and gives you a look you can’t quite place, but it makes you squirm a little. Roman is quick to put a hand over on your thigh once he gets in and you lace your fingers with his to try and ground yourself again.
The ride back feels like a blur but you suddenly remember what you’d packed in your bag. You tap the back of Roman’s hand and wait for him to turn his attention to you.
“Can we do a face mask when we get back?” You ask, knowing he probably won’t but it was worth a shot.
He makes a face, “do I have to? They feel weird.”
You’d maybe scarred him last time when you’d used a not so great charcoal mask and it had stuck to the end of his eyebrow pretty bad. You get his hesitation on it.
“It’s a different kind this time! It won’t hurt.”
He curls his lip up a little, still not believing you. You’re about to plead your case one more time when Jack turns around.
“I’ll do it.”
“Oh thank god,” Roman sighs, giving you a bashful smile.
“Deal. I just don’t want to do it alone,” you smile at him, thinking it would be just fine.
And it is. Until Brock suggests a late night fishing venture and Roman jumps all over it. Jack is two seconds from agreeing when you stop in your tracks halfway up the front steps, realizing they’d be leaving you instead of joining your impromptu spa night.
“You guys are fishing?” You ask quietly.
They all turn towards you and the three of them deflate when they see how sad you look. Immediately they all start talking at once, apologizing, suggesting that you do it a different night, and more that you can’t even make out as they all try and talk at once.
“I’ll stay,” Jack says, his phrase breaking through the most. Brock and Roman stop and look over at him.
“Are you sure, dude? We can just hang back tomorrow night and do that,” Roman reasons with him, knowing he loved fishing more than anything.
Jack nods, seeming sure of his decision, “yeah that’s okay. I said I would so I’ll stay back and do it.”
You can’t help but smile at the fact he’s willing to keep up his end of the deal. Brock turns and keeps heading into the house, still keeping his plan of fishing. Jack follows as well, but Roman holds back. He comes back down two steps until he’s even with you.
“You sure you want to stay here with Jack and do that? I can do it tomorrow if you want to wait,” he offers, his hand grabbing your waist. His expression is soft, letting you know he actually would if you wanted to the next day but you’re just in the mood for it.
“I’d rather do it tonight, if you don’t mind. Especially after getting all sweaty from skating,” you shrug a little, hoping he’s okay with it.
He nods and kisses your forehead, “if it makes you happy then go for it. If he complains that he didn’t get to fish enough once summer is over though we’re blaming you.”
You laugh, knowing Jack would end up saying that even if he went every single day. You’d accept that blame for one night of staying in and decompressing.
With that, Roman heads into the house, making his way to Brock’s side as a small cooler gets packed for the two of them. You toss a couple waters in when they’re not paying attention, knowing they’ll want them eventually.
A quick kiss and a ‘be careful’ leaves you alone with Jack one more time. The kitchen was quickly becoming the spot you two had the most alone time and something about that feels too homey.
“You ready for this?” You ask, turning and looking at him.
He smiles and nods, “ready as I’ll ever be. I haven’t done one before.”
“Oh even better then! Come on.”
You make your way up the stairs, Jack following closely behind you and grabbing your bathroom bag from the spare room. Like a puppy, he follows you through the rooms and halls, leaning against the door frame when you finally put your stuff on the bathroom counter. He watches carefully as you pull out the masks, eyeing it up.
“Do you want to watch me do it first?” You meet his eyes through the mirror, suddenly very aware at how closely he was watching your every move.
He nods, taking a couple steps closer and looking over your shoulder as you open the container up. He frowns when he sees the color of it, making you laugh right away.
“Don’t make that face already. You haven’t even felt it,” you gently elbow his side and he moves out of the way, standing behind you instead.
You look up and catch his smile in the mirror. He looks too cute as he stands closer than you thought and you feel yourself blush suddenly. You pull some of the face mask from the jar and apply it evenly on your own face. You finish it in no time and Jack makes an unsure noise behind you.
“What if I mess it up?” He asks, his face pinched with confusion, “you were so fast with it.”
You laugh and turn around towards him, “it’s not hard. You just have to get it even.”
“I don’t think I can do it.”
“Do you want me to do it for you?”
He nods quickly and you shake your head. Maybe he and his brother weren’t so different. You motion towards the toilet, knowing it would be easier to apply if he sat.
“Okay, no fidgeting,” you tell him quietly, pulling the jar over with you and putting some on your fingers.
He gives you a nervous look as you step between his legs to put it on him. He blinks hard and starts leaning back immediately, making you start to laugh. You move quickly, putting some across his cheek, but it doesn’t go as planned. He jerks back, yelling about it being cold, and you reach for him immediately.
“Why is it cold?” He bellows, only stopping after you’d smeared some of the mask in his hair.
“Jack, don’t! Just sit still! Now you got it in your hair.”
“Get it out! No wonder Roman didn’t want to do this,” he whines.
You put your clean hand on the back of his neck and pull him back closer, “just trust me okay. It won’t hurt you.”
He takes a deep breath and looks up at you, leaning forward. You leave your hand on the back of his neck just in case he decides to flinch again. He seems to relax after a second as he lets his eyes close. He seems to subconsciously lean back into your hand, but not to pull away. You realize you’re standing much closer than you’d expected to and you’re suddenly grateful that you’re in an empty house together.
“You’re all set,” you whisper, “well except the stuff in your hair.”
“Will you get it out?” He mumbles, eyes fluttering open as he looks up at you.
Your breath catches in your throat, a nod the only answer you can give him. You step away to grab a washcloth and find yourself looking back at him right away. His eyes follow your moves again, but the silence is comfortable. You wet the cloth, making sure the water was warm, and step back over to him.
“Why does it feel tight?” He asks, frowning a little.
“Don't frown. You’ll make it crack,” you put a finger under his chin and tip his face up towards you.
You start to wipe the spot near his temple that had gotten the mask on it and it cleans off easily. You almost step away from him but you hesitate for some reason and turn your attention to him then. He’s staring back and it makes your stomach flip a couple times.
“Jack…” you whisper, the air starting to feel heavy. You couldn’t do this. You knew your feelings were fading fast for his brother but you couldn’t just jump over the way you wished you could.
“I know.”
It’s the only explanation he offers but it sets your mood at ease. He gives you a tiny smile and pushes you back a step, hands on your hips, and stands up.
“Now how long does this stay on? It feels like cement,” he jokes, turning to face the mirror. He leans in and starts poking at his face, earning a smack on the shoulder from you.
“Don’t pick at it.”
He turns and looks at the shoulder you’d just hit and then at you, “my goodness, you’re bossy today.”
He smiles immediately, ruining the mask and reaching up to scratch his cheek right away. You roll your eyes playfully, handing him the rag you’d already wet.
“You can take it off, you big cry baby,” you tease, watching him start to clean his face.
He gets it mostly cleaned and starts to rinse his hands off but he suddenly smirks at you as he catches your eye in the mirror. You frown for a second, confused about his sudden demeanor change. He turns suddenly and throws half a handful of water at you, splashing you right on the front of your shirt.
You let out a surprised shriek, jumping from the shock. He starts to laugh hard and you realize he’s distracted enough for you to step in and throw water at him. It hits him and he realizes what you’ve done, reaching to do the same again but you grab his wrist and try to pull him back.
“Don’t you dare!” You laugh, trying to push him away from the water.
He’s bigger and stronger though so he uses his other hand to reach around you on the opposite side, this time only flinging a little up towards your face. You squeal and try to duck away but quickly realize he’s got you backed against his chest and you’re stuck. You’re both laughing so hard you can barely stand and when you look at him in the mirror you realize what the two of you were doing.
You slowly loosen your grip around his wrist and clear your throat, “truce, okay? I need to clean my face off.”
He sees your mood shift and steps back with a nod, “I’m, uh, I’ll be downstairs if you want to hang out. It’s getting kind of late though so I might head to bed soon.”
“Okay,” you say quietly, letting his wrist go when he steps back.
You watch him hang his head as he leaves the bathroom and you grip the counter. You were being irresponsible around him and you couldn’t risk getting caught by Roman. You have to check yourself before you got yourself in trouble.
You clean up in the bathroom, wiping the counter off from all the water you’d flung around and heading back to the room you’d share with Roman that night. You’re up all the way until he comes back, smiling when he crawls in next to you. He immediately curls up around you and you have to swallow hard.
He wasn’t always a bad boyfriend and you’d been friends for a long time before you dated. You may not see eye to eye every day but you didn’t want to hurt him ever. Especially not when it was his brother who was involved.
—
“Are you sure you want to go over to their place tonight?” You tease Roman as he lays on you, head resting on your stomach as you play with his hair.
You hadn’t been back to Jack and Brock’s in two weeks and summer was quickly drawing to a close. You only had about a month left and it felt like you’d blinked and time disappeared. You wanted to go, but you were hesitant too. Especially after last time you’d been there.
“Yes, my brother gave me shit for being holed up with you for the last couple weeks. He said I need to share,” he laughs, likely not thinking twice about the comment Jack had made.
You nod to yourself, glad he wasn’t looking at you, “I’m okay with going if you want.”
He leans up then and gives you the same trouble maker smirk that made you fall for him in the first place, “you just want to see Brock’s dogs, huh?”
You laugh, your heart having skipped for a second at who he was going to say, “of course I do. They’re the cutest boys I know.”
He shakes his head and you hope he can’t tell how quickly you’d almost panicked over the possibility of him bringing his brother up again. He leans up and kisses you, surprising you with how gentle it was. He usually wasn’t much for romantics in the middle of the day but apparently this was an exception.
“Let me grab a different shirt and we can go,” he kisses your cheek quickly and pushes himself off the bed.
You’re almost mad at yourself for how quickly your brain gets scrambled at the thought of Jack. You get up and head to the bathroom to fix your hair while simultaneously hyping yourself up for the night ahead.
You find yourself 3 drinks deep some odd hours later when a chill runs through your body. You shiver immediately, despite being in front of a bonfire, and the cold seeps in through the long sleeve shirt you’d worn. You didn’t think it was supposed to get cold but apparently the weather had other ideas. Go figure in Minnesota.
“Ro?” You ask, gently grabbing his forearm to interrupt his conversation with Jack.
“Hmm?”
“I’m cold and I forgot a coat,” you frown, crossing your arms and rubbing them for emphasis.
He shrugs slowly, nodding his head towards the fire, “I don’t know what to tell you. Stand closer I guess.”
“You ass,” Jack smacks his shoulder, “You better be nicer or I’ll tell mom. Come on, we can go get you one.”
Roman scoffs, “you better not! It’s not even that cold out.”
You hesitantly start to follow Jack as he makes his way towards the house, shaking his head as he goes. He was obviously annoyed with Roman, that much you could tell. You weren’t sure if it was your best idea to go in alone with him after last time but you figured this was a tight timeline kind of situation.
Jack is surprisingly quiet the entire way up to his room, but he opens the closet and steps in, motioning at the hangers, “whatever one you like. Most of them are from St. Cloud though.”
You smile and start to look through the row of sweatshirts, well aware his eyes were on you. You can feel the blush that starts to dust your cheeks and you can’t help but glance over at him. He smiles as soon as you do and finally looks away.
“Do you have a preference on it? I don’t want to take one you really love.”
“No preference. I know how to get it back if I need to,” he smirks, making you take a deep breath and turn back to the fabric that was still in your hand.
You tug the sleeve farther to get a view and realize it’s one from Providence this year. Something about it with his number on the chest stands out and you pull it out.
“This is okay?”
“I think it’ll look great on you.”
You slip the black sweatshirt over your head and you’re immediately washed over with warmth. You dig your hands into the front pouch and smile at Jack, knowing it was probably two sizes too big on you. He can’t help but smile softly at you in his clothes. He had to look away to remember you still very much weren’t his.
“Don't let Roman give you shit for it either. I’m still telling our mom what he said to you,” he elbows your gently as he walks by. He knows not to spend too much time there with you. He knew better but he was only human.
You snort, “she’s gonna rip him a new one. She always does when he’s mean to me.”
“We all like you a lot,” he looks back at you, his words saying more than he initially spoke, but you hear it loud and clear.
You nod, reaching forward silently right before he hits the top of the stairs. He glances down and sees, extending his hand and grabbing yours. He squeezes tight and makes his way down to the first floor. As he hits the last stairs he lets your hand go and you ball your hand into a fist instantly. It was over sooner than you wanted it to be.
He opens the door for you as always and follows an extra half step behind you. You find Roman quickly and he looks guilty for a moment before he sees what you’re wearing.
“I’m sorry about before. I’m definitely going to start bringing a sweatshirt though wherever we go. You don’t look good in his number,” he scowls, but reaches for your hand.
You take his but quickly find yourself comparing it to the boy who’d just held it inside. You kick yourself and tuck in closer to Roman’s side. You couldn’t keep playing these games. You had to make your mind up soon.
—
The bonfire was fun, both you and Roman ending up in a game of beer pong later that had you drinking more than you’d planned, so bed was a welcome sight the night before. You’d pulled your clothes off and stole the shirt he kept tucked in a drawer in the spare room you always stayed in, not thinking about it at all.
You wake up far too early, as always, the next morning and immediately crave a cup of coffee. You were already thinking about taking the dogs down to the dock with you to enjoy it and you happily head downstairs, not even considering the fact you had no pants on.
The sight you find in the kitchen makes you freeze, almost running right back up the stairs, but he looks up at you just in time. His eyes widen a little but respectfully looks up at you. You can’t even force a word from your mouth before he’s sliding a cup of coffee onto the island.
“I made coffee. Here,” he smiles softly, watching as you make your way closer to him.
You peak over the rim of the mug and see the color of it. A little creamer just the way you liked it. You give him a soft smile immediately. No one but your mom ever knew how you liked your coffee. Sure, Roman knew your Starbucks order, but the way you took it at home in the quiet morning hours meant way more to you than one store bought version ever would.
“Thank you. I really appreciate it,” you pick up the warm mug and take a sip. It was perfect, possibly even better than when you did it, and you let out a sigh right after.
Jack can’t help but watch. You look so content and happy, even with your hair a mess and a smudge of mascara under your eye from the night before. He wasn’t sure when he became so interested in you’d but it had hit him like a tidal wave the night before. Apparently seeing you in his clothes really got him thinking. He squints a little at the shirt you’re wearing and smirks when he realizes what one it is.
You hardly notice, too lost in how good your coffee is, so you hop up onto the counter next to where he’s standing and squeeze his face gently, his smirk turning to pursed lips with the tiniest smile on them.
“This coffee is amazing. Thank you,” you smile at him, finally a little taller than him for once.
“You already said that,” he laughs, pulling back from your hand and stepping in front of you.
You don’t know why you do it but you let him step between your legs, making room for him to get closer. He sets his own mug on the counter before taking yours from you and placing it next to his. You’re silently thankful because the last thing you needed was to drop hot coffee on the two of you.
His hands come to rest on each side of your thighs, his right hand rotating in until his fingers are gently dancing up and down your bare skin. Goosebumps break out immediately and you bite your lip to stay quiet.
“You know whose shirt that is right?” He asks, his voice so low you can barely hear him even with how close you two are.
His hand stops as his thumb rubs deeper circles into your skin and you have to grab his shoulders for support. The air is so charged you feel like you could snap with one wrong movement.
“It’s Roman’s,” you whisper, wondering why he was asking.
He shakes his head just the slightest bit, “no, we both played for Cedar Rapids. That’s mine.”
You frown, not believing him. How would he know it’s his when there was no way to tell? He can tell you’re unsure so he makes the move on his own accord. His slips his hand from the spot it had been massaging on your thigh up your side and under your shirt.
“Jack,” you gasp, hands quickly moving to squeeze his biceps.
He lets out a low chuckle and grabs the tag inside the shirt. He flips the shirt up, exposing half your side and tugs the tag out to see. There, in black sharpie ink, is a little J. You stare at it hard, suddenly feeling like you’d done something very wrong. Technically you had been for the past month or so when you started letting him in your thoughts so much but now it was heavier, more real.
“We can’t…” you mumble, looking at him again.
His hand lets go of the tag and settles back on your bare side under the shirt, “I know, but answer this truthfully. Do you really like him? Does he treat you the way you want to be treated?”
“We’ve grown up together. I know him so well. I know your family so well. He and I were just easy to start.”
“That doesn’t answer my question. Do you really like him? Because I know you’ve only been together three months but has it been worth it?”
The way he’s looking at you makes you feel oddly calm. You know no matter what you tell him he’ll respect your decision. He won’t ever push farther than you’re comfortable. You take a deep breath and answer him the right way.
“I think I liked the excitement of having him at first, but I don’t think he and I are right for each other,” you admit, pulling your hands from him and tangling them on your lap.
Jack nods, pulling his hands back and gripping the counter, “it’s up to you then what happens next. I’ll never be mad at you either way so don’t worry about me. Do what you have to.”
“Thank you,” you say for the thousandth time that morning, but you really did mean it.
He leans forward and kisses your forehead, all the air seemingly leaving your lungs at once. It’s so gentle you barely feel it but it burns your skin at the same time. A good burn, you decide. You cup his cheek when he pulls back, running your thumb gently across his skin.
“Are you hanging out here today? I think we’re having another bonfire,” he leans into your hand, the soft smile on his face seemingly permanent.
You shake your head, “your brother comes first tonight. He wanted a movie night.”
The words seem to shock Jack for some reason and he stands up fully, taking a step back, “I gotcha. Hopefully you come back around soon then.”
You slide off the counter, shorter than him all over again, and reach for your coffee mug, “I’m going to refill this and take Coolie down to the dock with me.”
You glance towards the living room and see the pup lift his head from the plush bed he was laying on. Jack looks over too and laughs a little.
“We know who the favorites are here, huh?” He calls the dog who quickly scurries over.
You refill your cup while he pets Coolie, smiling when you glance over at them. You’re struck with an odd sense of comfort from it and you give yourself an extra moment to watch. You don’t hesitate too long though, tossing a goodbye over your shoulder and leaving Jack in the one place that always led to trouble between you two.
Jack hardly has a moment to breathe before Roman comes pounding down the stairs, a grin on his face. He didn’t hear a thing luckily, Jack can tell that much. Roman looks out the window above the sink, seeing you heading across the yard. He smiles a little and turns to Jack.
“Did you ever think we’d end up together?” He asks, genuinely wanting his brother’s input.
Jack winces, shrugging a little, “not really. We’ve all known each other so long and you two are so opposite.
Roman nods, looking back out at you again, “yeah that’s fair. I feel like she’s been off the last couple months though.”
“She seems fine to me,” Jack defends you, crossing his arms across his chest.
“I’m sure you’d know all about that. You’ve been hanging off her side all summer. Listen, I know you haven’t been single in a while but you don’t have to hang out with my girlfriend all the time.”
“Maybe if you treated her better she’d hang out with you more than me,” Jack argues back, kicking himself as soon as the words slip out.
Roman’s jaw tenses for a moment, “you don’t know anything about how I treat her or our relationship.”
“I know a hell of a lot more than you think.”
He’s surprisingly calm as he says it, so much so that Roman even hesitates to think about it. Jack had been the one in a long term relationship and Roman usually talked to girls for a bit and moved on. He files that away for a different time to ask you how you felt about it.
“I don’t want to sound like a dick,” Jack mumbles, “I hope that doesn’t come across wrong. You know you're my brother and I’d do anything for you.”
Roman nods, knowing he’d only said it with everyone’s best interest in mind, “no, you’re right I think. As much as I hate to admit that.”
Jack smiles at him finally and pushes his shoulder. Roman shrugs it off but knows what he needs to do before your movie night later that day.
—
You should feel cozy. You’ve got comfy clothes on, you’re under a blanket on your own couch, and there’s a movie queued up and ready to play. Except Roman can’t seem to sit down and he’s all keyed up. You feel the emotions rolling off him and finally you snap.
“Would you sit down? Or at least tell me what’s got you all worked up?” You sit forward, reaching for his hand.
He looks over at you, seeming shy suddenly, “do you think I treat you okay?”
“Uhm,” you stutter, instantly taken off guard by his question. You think for a moment, trying to get your thoughts in order before you follow up, “what makes you think you don’t?”
“I was just thinking about it earlier today. You’d call me out on it if I wasn’t, right?”
You nod slowly, “I mean I think so? It’s kind of an awkward thing to bring up to someone but I’d let you know.”
“Okay, good. You deserve to be happy so I want you to be treated well.”
You smile, feeling a little at ease when he finally sits down next to you. You settle into his side for the movie but your brain is spinning in overdrive. You’d heard murmurs from Jack when Roman does something to you that he doesn’t fully agree with. He wouldn’t have said anything though, would he? A week ago you would have said no way, but after the kitchen incident that morning… you weren’t sure of anything now other than the way your heart had flipped from Jack’s touch.
—
The movie night ran so long that you and Roman ended up sleeping on the couch. The only reason you get up that morning rather than staying nestled in his arms is the fact you need a bathroom break immediately after waking. You’re careful to untangle from him and before you go back, you start a pot of coffee. It was better when you woke up to someone having it ready for you, but you were independent. You could do this.
You end up staring at the pot as it brews, jumping when Roman comes behind you and wraps his arms around your waist.
“I’m sorry,” he laughs, kissing your shoulder.
You don’t put your hands over his arms like usual, but you do pat them for a second, “sorry, I was zoned out.”
“I see that. What’s going on in that pretty head of yours?”
“Too much,” you laugh, trying to play it cool.
“You want to darty with some of the boys today?” He asks, letting you go and reaching for a cup to get water.
“Not really,” you answer honestly, “I wanted to get some groceries and clean up around here.”
He frowns immediately, “why are you such a buzzkill? Why can’t we ever have fun?”
“Why do we always have to party, Ro? Why can’t we relax for one day? I can’t keep up with you,” you shake your head, instantly aggravated by his mood shift.
You take a deep breath, finally losing your cool, “we haven’t even dated for three months, Roman, and all we’ve done is fight. What are we even together for if we can’t get along?”
You were tired of it. You were so tired of always fighting over differing opinions. You and Jack barely disagreed but his brother could hardly make it a week without an argument with you. Roman doesn’t expect the bluntness but he’d been asking himself the same thing lately.
“We do fight a lot, huh?” He sets the still empty glass down on the counter.
You feel guilty then, knowing you shouldn’t have blown up like that, but you couldn’t hold it in anymore, “I’m sorry.”
He steps back over to you and turns you towards him, “no I’m sorry. I think we tried too hard to make this a thing when we should have just stayed friends.”
You nod, laughing a little, “of course the time we agree so easily is when we’re calling things off.”
Roman laughs too, shaking his head, “yeah, go figure. Is that what you want then? You want to go back to just friends?”
“I think it might be for the best. I don’t want to lose you as a friend, too.”
He pulls you into a big hug and you swear you couldn’t hold him any tighter. It’s an odd finish but you don’t feel any hard feelings from either side. He kisses the side of your head as he pulls away, giving you a gentle smile.
“You know if you ever need anything to just call me, okay? I’m still here for you.”
“Thanks, Ro. Same for you,” you nod.
He grabs the few things he had sitting around and slips his shoes on. An awkward wave is all he leaves you with and suddenly you’re all alone in your apartment, but you don’t feel alone. You feel an odd sense of calm instead as you go about your morning. You had no worries now. Well, none except for a certain brother of someone you’d just let walk out your door.
—
You spend two weeks doing your own thing. Whatever you want, whenever you want, with whoever you want. You saw friends more that week than you had all summer and you were out to eat at least half the days of the week. You were having fun and enjoying the last little bit of time before summer ended and the real world set back in.
You felt amazing from the reset. It’s not that Roman had suppressed you by any means, but there was something about knowing you wouldn’t be fighting with anyone that made your chest feel lighter.
You’re happily cleaning up after dinner, singing along to the song that played through your speakers, when your phone buzzes on the counter. Your heart always stops for a second before you check the name. Part of you may have hoped it was Jack, but in the two weeks since you’d had your moment that changed things in the kitchen you hadn’t heard anything. You figured things only changed for you and not him. You were silly to think you could go from one brother to the next.
Your friend had texted you about brunch the next day and you quickly tap a reply before skipping the current song you had on. You finish loading the dishwasher and dry your hands on a towel, looking around to make sure your kitchen was all cleaned up.
You’re about to pour another glass of wine when a knock on the door gets your attention. You pause your music and check the peephole, quickly opening the door when you see who it is.
“Jack?” You're surprised, shocked even, but he smiles like there’s not a problem in his world.
“Hi, stranger. Haven’t heard from you in a while,” he answers.
“What are you doing here?” You question, not having expected him, but realizing you wouldn’t have wanted to see anyone else standing where he was.
“I just wanted to make sure I didn’t do anything wrong? I heard what happened.”
His question has you reaching for him and pulling him inside quicker than you have time to think, “What could you possibly have done? If anything you got me to hang on longer than I thought I would.”
His worried expression doesn’t drop when you pull him in and he’s quick to shut the door behind him.
“Hang on longer? To what?” He asks, a little confused but also trying not to get too excited about how quickly you’d reached for him.
“If it weren’t for you, I maybe would’ve given up the fight a little sooner than I did. But you always see the good in people and it made me want to see the good in my relationship, but then I realized maybe I was hanging on for the wrong reasons… for the wrong brother. I wanted to keep my ties with you as much as I did him.”
Jack is shocked by what you say but he’d be lying if he said he wasn’t happy to hear it, “the wrong brother? That’s a big statement right there. Are you sure?”
The thought was scary and you had no clue what the fallout might be from it, but you knew you liked him. You liked being around him, spending time with him, and keeping each other company.
“I definitely picked the wrong brother I think,” you laugh nervously.
He had every right to shoot you down. You had just broken up with his little brother after all. When you really thought about it, which you had been doing a lot lately, he was the one that was always looking out for you, making sure you were comfortable and happy, always someone who could make you laugh despite whatever had led to making you feel like you could cry. Jack knew the situation could be messy considering who you had just broken up with but he couldn’t deny that the way you fit in his life wasn’t something he was willing to give up.
He can’t help the little smile that comes onto his face even though you look so nervous you could cry, “I always knew Grant would win one of these days.”
It’s so ridiculous that you do let out a couple tears but you’re laughing so hard you almost double over. Jack matches it, but starts to move a little closer until his hands find your hips.
You take a deep breath and grab onto his arms, “would your mom hate me? I really miss her already.”
“I’m probably 99% sure my mom loves you more than any of her actual sons,” he shakes his head, but it wasn’t a lie. She thought the world of you, “you know she pulled me aside the other day after Roman told her about you guys. She said I needed to look out for you still.”
Your face shows the shock you feel but there’s something else with it too. A sense of excitement that you hadn’t messed up a major part of your life by dating a childhood friend and having it go wrong.
“Oh she did?” You finally ask, smirking up at him.
“That’s a troublemaker’s look if I’ve ever seen one from you. What are you thinking?”
You shrug, but quickly look down at his lips before looking back up, “I can think of a few things.”
“I leave soon though. Two more weeks and I’m back to Providence,” he warns but neither of you pay attention to that.
“Make it worth it then.”
“Oh I plan on it. Now we can actually do this without sneaking around in kitchens,” he smirks.
You laugh and pull him closer, wrapping your arms around his neck, “no one I’d rather sneak around with.”
You knew it wasn’t ideal and you’d have to be careful with how fast things went but you knew he’d treat you the way you deserved. He’d always treat you better than anyone else.

MERweek 2021 - Day 2: Long Time No See
Yes, I know we’re almost done with Day 3 already (in my time zone anyway), but I’m going at my own pace on these things. Meet Viola’s mom! Viola has a backstory adapted from the Earthborn and Spacer backgrounds - you don’t need to know all about it to read this, but there are little references. If you’re curious, I summarized it here.
Not sold on this title. Doesn’t quite work tonally, I don’t think. But I picked it because it’s a lyric from my mom’s favorite song. This takes place a few months after Shepard’s arrest post-Arrival. Fair warning: this is seriously nothing but talking.
Title (working): Darlin’, May I Intrude? Rating: T Content: Language; rocky mother/daughter relationship Pairing: Viola Shepard & Hannah Shepard (faint background Shakarian) Genre: Family/General Word Count: 1160
“Commander,” the young MP on guard duty greeted when she opened the door.
They weren’t supposed to call her that, but none of them could seem to figure out what to call her instead. Another had tried “Ms. Shepard” once - he’d immediately grimaced like he had food poisoning and never said it again. She told them just Shepard was fine, but, no matter what the brass said, they saw her a certain way. She let it go - at least this one wasn’t saluting her. “Yes, Lance Corporal Kabinoff?” she asked. And if she sounded a little annoyed, well, it was getting late and Shepard was just sinking into her book - god, this whole house arrest thing was turning her into an old lady.
“You have a visitor, ma’am,” Kabinoff replied before stepping off to the side, and Shepard got a glimpse about 15 years into her future.
She’d always vehemently denied that there was any resemblance between her and her mother, but something - distance, death, whatever - had changed that. She definitely saw it now, and it gave her a pang of familial fondness she was unaccustomed to. “Mom,” she said quietly.
Hannah smiled, her eyes wet. “Hey, Vi. Got time to catch up?”
Shepard blinked a few times, thrown off balance by the old nickname. Only one person had called her that in the last few years, and she was trying very hard to keep her mind off of him. She swallowed and set her jaw, moving to let her mother inside and closing the door.
Viola took a deep breath and turned to face Hannah. She had to look down at her - she had been the taller one since the first time they’d reunited 17 years ago. “I didn’t think they’d let you visit,” she said. She folded her arms across her chest, a silent signal that she wasn’t ready to be touched. Her mom was demonstrative in her affection, but it was only ever on Viola’s terms.
Hannah gave her space, moving to look out the window. “I had to ask a few times. Luckily, Admiral Anderson has a soft spot for you and me, so he cleared the way.” She smiled softly at the Vancouver skyline.
Viola huffed a laugh. “What are you gonna do if he ever cashes in on all the favors you owe him?”
Hannah turned and caught her eye for a moment. “I think you knocked out a few of them taking out Sovereign and making him Councillor,” she quipped.
“Are you kidding? I don’t think he’ll ever forgive me for making him play politics.”
“Hmm,” Hannah hummed thoughtfully. “Maybe if you beat the Reapers he’ll call it even.”
Viola’s posture relaxed a bit, and she stepped up next to her mother, joining her in staring out the window. “So… you believe me?”
Hannah’s head whipped around to face her. “What?! Vi, of course I believe you. I was at the Citadel - I saw that thing!”
Viola shrugged. “So did the Council. So did millions of other people. Still feels like the only people who believe the Reapers are real are the ones who were on my crew. And… fucking Cerberus, I guess.”
Hannah scoffed. “‘Geth ship’ my squishy human ass,” she muttered. “That was the joke of the century, and trust me, I’m not the only one who thinks so. You’ve got more friends than you think in the Alliance, even if the higher ups won’t admit it.”
“Friends will help,” Viola said with a sigh, “but we won’t get very far without actual preparation. And I can’t do shit locked up in here.”
There wasn’t much Hannah could say to that - she was right, and they were both powerless to do anything about it. They stood there in silence for a few minutes, watching a shuttle take off from the spaceport a few kilometers from the base and basking in each other’s presence in their own way. Eventually, Viola’s arms loosened and fell to her sides, and her gaze dropped to the floor. “Mom…” she whispered. “I’m afraid I fucked up.”
“Oh, Vi,” Hannah soothed. She wrapped an arm around her daughter’s shoulders and pulled her closer. “I’m not going to pretend I know what you’re going through, and apparently the details are classified. But I know you’ve never taken death lightly. I know that whatever the hell happened in that system, you made the call you had to make. If you had fucked up, you would admit it. You wouldn’t be saying you were afraid - you would be sure of it, and you would own up to it, because that’s the kind of person you’ve always been.”
Viola shook her head. “Heh. You sound like…” She trailed off, pinching the bridge of her nose - she was not going to cry about this again.
Hannah rubbed Viola’s shoulder. “Whoever I sound like must be pretty smart.”
Viola took a deep breath to gather herself. “Smarter than he thinks he is, to be honest. At least about this kind of stuff. Arrogant as hell about other things.” Fuck. She wasn’t supposed to be thinking about him, and she definitely wasn’t supposed to be talking about him.
“Should I ask?” Hannah was trying not to smile.
“No.”
“Point taken. But, listen.” She stepped around in front of Viola, encouraging her to meet her eyes. She did, after a moment. “Whatever hell rains down on us, I have your back. I’ll always have your back. So will Anderson. So will your crew, I’m sure. I know you’re going to give this fight everything you can, but you need to remember you aren’t in it alone. Let some of your people help carry the burden, or there won’t be any of you left.”
Viola turned away - she felt her walls instinctively going up, though she tried to fight it. She was no good at this sort of thing.
Hannah sighed. “I’m sorry, Vi. I know. And you know how much I wish things had been different. But that’s not your life anymore. You have people.”
After a few tense seconds, Viola nodded a couple of times, her posture still rigid. “Yeah. Yeah.”
Hannah stepped back, letting her breathe. “I have to ship back out in the morning. I can head to the barracks if you want - no hard feelings.”
Viola finally looked at her again. “Are you even allowed to stay?”
Her mother shrugged with a light smirk. “They didn’t tell me I wasn’t.”
“Well,” Viola said, trying to smile a little in return. “House arrest is pretty fucking lonely. A little company might not kill me.”
“Ha!” Hannah barked. “‘Might not kill you’? Is that a bit of a joke I hear?”
“Mm. Trying to lighten up a little. But I do want you to stay. I…”
She didn’t finish her sentence, but Hannah knew what she was leaving unsaid. She tucked a lock of hair behind her daughter’s ear. “Yeah. Me too, kid.”

Trapped - Chapter One
JJ Maybank x Reader
Chapter Two
Warnings: underaged drinking, physical fighting, slight angst, pining
Word Count: 2k
A/N: there could be a possible part two to this. let me know if y’all want it!
masterlist
The sunshine pouring in through your window was what woke you, along with JJ stirring next to you. He readjusted for a moment, then closed his eyes again, chasing whatever dream he was having. You turned your head to see him, his hair all messed up, his mouth slightly agape. There were brusies littering his body and face, some leftover from a few days ago from his old man, and newer ones left by Rafe. He never looked more peaceful than when he was sleeping. You took your time to take in all his features, even though you see the boy every day. The cuts and bruises left on his cheeks were enough to make you tear up, and make the events from the night before come calling back, along with a pounding headache.
-
It was just another Boneyard Party, nothing special about it. John B and Pope were joking about something, laughing up a storm, you and Kie were sitting on a log, talking and gossiping with some other southside girls, and JJ was flirting and drinking with some touron he hoped he would bag for the night. Nothing was out of place. Everything was as it should be, until the Kooks showed up.
This happened almost every Boneyard party, even though the Pogues warn the Kooks everytime to not come back. The rules just don’t apply to them.
Rafe and his minions made their way to the keg, just as JJ was going to get a refill. JJ watched Rafe fill his cup, as if he was stalking his prey. Rafe knew he was unwanted there, but stood his ground anyway.
“I promise a picture will last longer, Pogue.”
“What are you doing here,” JJ asked as he crossed his arms over his chest.
“Relax, we’re just here to have some fun, same as the rest of you.” Rafe’s tone was condescending, but JJ knew there was some truth to it. JJ decided that tonight wasn’t the night to start anything. Nothing was on the table yet. He still kept his feet planted, not wanted to let Rafe out of his sight.
Rafe’s gaze shifted from his cup to the crowd, searching for potential hook ups. The roaring fire on the other side of the party caught his attention, and with that, so did you.
“And I think I just found my fun for the night.” Rafe pointed you out to his boys, causing them to hoop and holler for a moment. JJ saw who Rafe was pointing to, and was caught off guard when he saw it was you.
Not that anyone knew, but JJ had been crushing on you for a while. It was the way you smiled at the stupid shit he did, they way you told him off when it got out of hand. He loves how resistant and resilient you were, how you could let no one get in your way. He was in love with you. But he could never let you know. The fear of rejection swallowed him up til he couldn’t breathe, so he wasted his time on tourists, people he would never have to see again if things went badly. People that weren’t you.
“Hey, she’s off limits bro,” JJ said, his eyes cold and steady on Rafe.
“Well I don’t see anyone else on her, do you?” Rafe made his way over to JJ, swinging his arm over his shoulders. JJ tried to wiggle out of Rafe’s grip, but found no point. Rafe pointed to you again.
“Just look at her man, she’s just waiting for someone to pick her up.”
“Stop, Rafe.” JJ was trying so hard to keep his cool, but without you around to keep him calm, it was growing near impossible.
“Ohh I bet she would just love to go home with one of us huh? Just imagine the body under those clothes, boys.” JJ ripped himself out of Rafe’s grip, and lunged at him. JJ tackled Rafe to the ground, straddling him and beating his face. The commotion and the gasps of on-lookers caught yours and Kiara’s attention. If there was a fight, you knew JJ was involved. When you ran up to the scene, you weren’t surprised to see the blond you know and love.
JJ was still on top, but his energy was fading fast. Rafe took the opportunity to flip them over, now leaving JJ at his mercy. The punches being thrown were animalistic. Blood was splattered over both of their faces, and there was no sign of either of them slowing down. Screams and hollors from the crowd overpowered you and Kie’s cries for them to stop, but out of the corner of his eye, JJ spotted you. The look on your face, the terrified, desperate look, was enough to hit JJ with another round of adrenaline. He grabbed Rafe, tore his body off of his, and slammed him onto the sand. Nothing could have stopped JJ from beating the shit out of Rafe. Not even your screams. How could Rafe say those things? How could he say those things about you? The girl JJ would do anything for. The girl JJ wishes was his.
It wasn’t till John B and Pope pulled JJ off that the fighting ceased. When they tore him off, you could finally see the damage done to both boys. JJ looked terrible, and Rafe as well. Even though the boys were yelling at JJ to stop, that it wasn’t worth it, he wasn’t done. He stomped back to Rafe, still lying in the sand. He bend down to get in his face.
“Never talk that way about her again, you hear me? Don’t even look at her. You know what? Don’t even think about her.” JJ was face to face once more with Rafe. He grabbed onto a ball of his shirt, lifting Rafe slightly off the ground.
“Stay the fuck off The Cut.”
As a parting gift, JJ spat in Rafe’s face. It startled JJ a little bit when it came out red, but he kept his composure. He let go of Rafe’s shirt, knocking the wind out of him. JJ strutted back to the group, proud of his handywork. The gazes of bystanders only fueled him more.
“Let’s go,” he spoke lowly to the rest of you. You all hopped in the van and drove back to The Chateau. The ride was silent, save for a few groans and sniffles.
When you got back, you helped JJ clean up. You finally got a good look at the damage done to his beautiful face, and it tore you up inside. You hated seeing him hurt. It made you feel like you couldn’t protect him.
“Hey, JJ?” you spoke softly, as if not to hurt the boy anymore. You felt like you were doing enough damage with the rubbing alcohol.
“Hmm?” His eyes were closed. He just wanted to focus on something other than the pain.
“What was the fight about?”
JJ’s eyes shot open. The sudden move caught your attention, and made you chuckle a bit.
“What?” you giggled out. He cleared his throat, trying to play it off.
“Doesn’t matter.” You looked at him like he was crazy, which he was.
“It doesn’t matter? Well why get in a fight about it if it doesn’t matter, then?” JJ looked down, ashamed to meet your gaze. He hopped off the counter, and shuffled out of the small room.
“It doesn’t matter,” he mumbled one more time before he left for his spare room. You were left in the bathroom, dumbfounded by his stubbornness. You cleaned up, got a water bottle from the fridge, and headed outside to meet the rest of your friends. John B was the first to notice you.
“What’s up with him?” He queried.
“He wouldn’t tell me,” you said as you sat down.
“I’ve seen JJ get in some gnarly fights, but I’ve never seen that before,” Pope said. You all nodded in agreement.
“Yeah, nothing like that before.” Kie offered you a comforting smile.
You couldn’t get the image out of your head. The blood and sand all over him, the bruises littering his frame. It made you shiver.
After a while of sitting around the fire, not much spoken, you all decided that it was time to go in. Pope put out the fire, and you watched the smoke flare up. There was always something so satisfying about it, and you would take anything to give you a little peace right about now.
You were getting ready to go home, but this feeling kept nagging you. You couldn’t leave without checking on JJ. As quietly as you could, you opened the door to his room, and cringed when the door squeaked.
“Y/N?” JJ asked as he turned his head toward the sound.
“Yeah, It’s me, I just came to check on you, but I’ll go,” you rushed out the last part, not wanting to give yourself the chance to embarrass yourself.
“No, it’s okay,” JJ reassured. You relaxed at his words.
“Oh, okay,” you quietly said, you stood in the doorway awkwardly for a moment before JJ spoke up.
“Hey, Y/N?”
“Yeah?”
“Can you stay with me?”
Your eyes widened at his words.
“Um, y-yeah, sure,” you stuttered. You gave him a smile as you sat down on his bed, your legs still hanging over the side.
“No, I mean, like, for the night, Y/N.” He chuckled at your sudden shyness.
“Oh, yeah.” Your voice was a little shaky. JJ lifted the covers for you, welcoming you into the bed. Once you got settled in, your felt your nerves fading away. You laid on your side, facing him.
JJ felt like home. His presence made all your worries vanish, leaving you with nothing but a soft fondness. He made you feel as if you were laying on a cloud, with nothing but ocean below. Nothing but the waves to catch you if you fell. Nothing but home.
He moved from laying on his back to his side, and put his hand out in front of him, like he was waiting for something to be put in it. You looked at him questioningly.
“C’mon,” he whispered. You got the hint, and placed your hand in his. He looked deeply in your eyes, and you thought, this is it. This is the moment it all changes. This is the moment he finally tells me. He loves me.
“Look... I’m sorry for acting like a jackass earlier. I shouldn’t have stormed out like that. Especially when you were trying to take care of me. I’m sorry.” He couldn’t meet your eyes. But what JJ said in the bathroom was the truth. The fight didn’t matter. JJ’s feelings towards you didn’t matter. There was no way someone as beautiful as you, someone as kind as you, could ever love him. He knew not to believe the fantasies in his head could come true one day. Like the ones where you two growing up together, leaving the Outer Banks, starting a family. He couldn’t let himself fall into those traps. He was smarter than that.
You brought your hand up to stroke his cheek, being extra careful.
“Hey, it’s okay, I shouldn’t have pressed. I’m sorry.” At the reassurance, JJ looked up at you. You gave him a smile, a smile that said, “It’s okay, I’m not going anywhere”.
JJ was too smart to fall for this trap. He offered a smile back, before tugging his hand away. He flipped over, now laying on his other side, leaving you hurt and confused. You thought this was going somewhere, wasn’t it? You weren’t making it up, right? You couldn’t believe you let yourself fall for it. Fall for his meaningless flirts, his empty words.
“Good night, Y/N.”
“Good night, JJ.”
All you wanted to do was grab his shoulders, flip him over, and kiss him. But you couldn’t do that. You couldn’t. Keeping everything bottled up seemed like the best option, it was the only option. You couldn’t destroy what little thing you had with him. It would kill you, so you would let this little crush eat you alive. It was obvious that JJ didn’t like you back, so why even bother with the unnecessary feelings. They just got in the way. They trapped you from having fun, and getting with anyone else. You would just have to accept it. Not everyone can have their fairytale ending.

Nightmares
Word Count: 1425 Warnings: None Genre: Angst Characters: Deidara, Hidan, Kurotsuchi Author's Note: Deidara suffers from PTSD, which presents itself in the form of nightmares and night terrors. Also, Deidara uses they/them pronouns. If you don't like that, please just scroll away. This was inpsired by Lauren Babic's cover of Lovely. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ “Deidara!” Kurotsuchi called, nearly tripping over her feet as she chased after the blonde. “Get back here!”
“Catch me first!” The thirteen year old cackled, grinning as they ducked behind a large boulder, panting softly from sprinting through the crowds. Graduation; Kurotsuchi finally became a chuunin, two years after they had. She was their kohai, their student- she would be learning beneath them and the guidance of their Tsuchikage. Next year, they’d be able to apply to become a jounin. The mere idea had them giddy, had their heart skipping a beat. An official Iwagakure jounin!
The sound of footsteps had them turning, eyes widening in surprise as they stared at three figures, the landscape around them changing. Wait. No, no, this was wrong. This wasn’t the Tsuchikage memorial they’d been hiding behind. This was-
This was the studio they’d created, that had been gifted to them to perfect their art. No, no! Not again, they didn't want to go through this again! The kiln behind them crackled, hot against their back. “Akatsuki?” They asked, brow furrowing in confusion. The strange cloaks they were weren’t fit for Iwagakure’s weather, they noted. “Don’t know, don’t care! It has nothing to do with me.” The fifteen year old declared, gaze drifting back down to the clay spider they were molding. “The only thing I wish to do is continue making my art, hm.”
“Sure, he seems like he’s full of energy,” the one in the puppet- Sasori. That was Sasori! “But he seems like the type to die young,” he finishes, gaze directed upwards towards Itachi. Uchiha Itachi- and Hoshigaki Kisame. They were the ones who brought them in.
Not again, please, not again! They tried to scream, to force their voice out, to plead and beg, but nothing changed. The cocky attitude remained. “Just who the hell are you anyway?” They asked, apprehension coloring their words.
“We know you’re aiding anti-government factions,” Kisame began, head tilting as he studied the blonde. “We’re here to give you a purpose.”
“Purpose?” Deidara scoffed. “I don’t need a purpose!”
“Alright,” Itachi murmurs, shaking his head, “that’s enough. I’ll handle this.”
No, no, no- not again, not again! Deidara panicked, their heart racing as Itachi approached, the tomoe spinning in his gaze. Please, not again!
“NO-” Deidara yelled, jolting up in their bed, chest heaving as the memories of their dream began to drift away. Another nightmare. Their gaze frantically searched the dark room, lit only by the light that spilled in through their window of one of the many neon signs that could be found throughout Amegakure. “Just a dream,” they murmured, reaching up to scrub at their eyes. “A dream.” But it wasn’t a dream. They weren’t in Iwagakure.
They were in Amegakure, in a damned tower with a Buddha’s head that sat atop it, in a village that rained endlessly. No, they weren’t home. A shuddering breath is drawn in as they draw their legs to their chest- a flat chest, one that felt right. Comfortable. A year had passed since that surgery had taken place, the scars fully healed.
Their eyes filled with tears as the adrenaline began to wane, the same moment the door opened. Head snapping up, wide blue eyes studied the figure in the door- tall. Not Sasori. No black tomoe on red irises shining in the dark light. Instead, it was lilac eyes and silver hair. Hidan. “Another nightmare?” He asked, voice gruff from sleep.
That’s right- his room was below Deidara’s. Of course he’d have heard them yell. “Sorry,” they mumbled, shaking their head as Hidan steps in, closing the door behind himself. “They’re coming more often.”
“Well,” Hidan hummed, coming to the other side of the bed,”’s close to when you were brought in, yeah?” He asked as he settled down, making himself comfortable in the pile of blankets and pillows and- was that a stuffed spider?- that made up Deidara’s bed. This wasn’t the first time.
It wouldn’t be the last.
A sigh that devolved into a whimper escaped Deidara as they nodded, face in their hands. “I didn’t want this,” they whispered, voice catching. “I never wanted this. I wanted to be good. I wanted to do good. I never intended on joining, or even on leaving Iwa. I had to run. I had to. Until I could master this,” they motioned with their hands, voice unsteady as tears began to roll freely down flushed cheeks. Pretty, Hidan thought distantly. “I was a threat. I already had this stupid fucking kekkei genkai, and coupled with the- the forbidden jutsu, I was dangerous. But I was good, Hidan. I was a good fucking person!” They yelled, slamming a fist down against their own thigh, hard enough to make Hidan grimace in pain. “I worked for my village and I had a student and now? Now, I’m a fucking S-Class to be killed on the spot. I’m only eighteen, and I’m known all across the fuckin’ nations for doing something that I never wanted to be a part of in the first place.”
Hidan’s brow furrowed inward, a hand reaching out to grasp onto Deidara’s arm, tugging them down gently to lay with him. No words were exchanged as Deidara curled in against him, their sobs soft, muffled by the back of their own hand, the fight in them extinguished just as quickly as it appeared. He could only imagine the pain that had come with Deidara’s borderline kidnapping. He’d heard some details from Sasori himself, a few from Kisame.
Itachi never spoke of it, as if he were ashamed of what he’d done. And he should be.
“One day,” Deidara whispered, breath hot against Hidan’s neck. “ One day, I’ll make it out of here. Even if it takes a hundred years,” their voice is filled with a conviction that surprises Hidan.
His arm tightens around them, holding them closer. “One day, you will,” he agrees, though he isn’t sure what he truly is agreeing with. “Go back to sleep.” It wasn’t even dawn yet, too early to rise and do anything. “I’ll stay. Just go the fuck back to sleep.” When he gets no response from Deidara, he pulls back a touch to glance down- only to find the blonde explosion expert sound asleep, brow still furrowed but otherwise calm. Their face was still wet with tears.
Carefully, he reached up, drying the tears with the edge of one of Deidara’s blankets. They were the youngest out of all of them- the youngest, the most troubled. Aside from maybe Itachi. That dude was fucked beyond belief. But Deidara had only been fifteen, just barely, when they were brought in. He remembered that day- only three months after he himself was brought in.
The screaming. The fighting. How Deidara had decked Itachi and nearly scratched Zetsu’s left eye out before Kisame had gotten ahold of them. How they screamed and growled, threatening to make this entire village ground zero, until Konan had brought them into her office.
The screaming had stopped soon after, and was replaced with sobbing and a soothing voice.
“What the fuck are we even doin’?” Hidan muttered to the dark room, though he received no response. Kakuzu was still asleep in their bed- or, he had been when he’d rolled out at the sound of Deidara’s scream. He’d half expected to find Sasori in here- but that was mere wishful thinking. The puppet master didn’t care about nightmares.
Probably didn’t even sleep.
Sighing, he readjusted, nose scrunching up at how many fucking pillows Deidara slept with. Comfort- he could get that. The kid was barely eighteen, now- and still had these damned nightmares at least twice a week. A part of him wondered what Itachi had shown him. But a larger part, the smarter part, knew better than to ask. Instead, he stayed quiet and did what he could. Which wasn’t much- but, shit, something is better than nothing, right?
He pulled the blankets up high, covering Deidara completely before even bothering with himself despite the chill in the room. He kept them close, tucking their head beneath his chin, into the crook of his neck. Sleep came quickly, sweeping over him and dragging him down deep.
It was strange. Normally, he had nightmares- hell, that’s all he ever had. But on nights like this? He didn’t dream.
He couldn’t help but wonder as he fell into the warm arms of sleep if Deidara had dreams during these times, or if he, too, was dreamless.

Y/N's POV
I was currently at my high school.
I had just finished my studies in the library and it was already evening but I decided to stay longer today as my boyfriend was training with his friends in the basket hall. But it was fine because it was already pretty late and the boys should be finished now and I could finally see Sunwoo.
We have been dating for six months and I feel very comfortable with him, it almost feels like I found the one I wanna be with for the rest of my life.
Even if I don't know him for so long, he gives me strength, the thing I had never had.
I'm delicate but I tend to hide my feelings in front of people that I don't trust.
Lately something confusing is going on. Sunwoo has been weirdly avoiding me, and his friends that I assume to really like me too, also act very suspicious sometimes.
They would take him away from me to talk to him alone.
I would just be confused and worried about what was going on.
But today I would talk to them about it!
Right in the moment I was walking through the school halls, on my way to them, but I heard loud voices that sounded like they were seriously discussing.
Before I opened the door, I heard my name and was even more concerned.
I figured it would be smarter to just listen to it and wait while hiding.
"Sunwoo, you can't lie to her forever! She is a great person, she doesn't deserve this anymore. Actually she never did."
I sensed the one who said this was Juyeon and he sounded very serious about what he was talking about.
My anxiety started to kick in.
What was I going to hear next?
"I know, she would never deserve this. But I really do like her. I could just keep it as my secret." Now Sunwoo talked, he sounded like he meant what he said.
But what was the damn secret they were talking about? How bad was it?
"Oh wow Sunwoo! You finally fell in love, congrats. Just sad that she was only a game to you in the beginning. You decided to play with the wrong heart." Juyeon said in a very loud and angry tone.
Was he trying to protect me?
"He's right, you should tell her before it will be too much and she finds out herself. Honestly, I hoped she would break up with you because you can be an egoistic ass sometimes!" Now Jacob exclaimed.
"Yeah, I'm sorry guys. But I can't. I will lose her if I tell her that she was a bet. I will lose her, and she will hate me. I couldn't handle that."
I gasped quietly, pressing my palm on my mouth to stay silent.
It was pretty much to take.
My boyfriend just confessed that I was just a bet!? Someone who No one cares about. That's what I was for them.
"But you have to Sunwoo, she's too pure. You will break her. You know she has no one that would take care of her. She was new and lonely when she came here. You made her feel safe and now you're doing this to her? She will never forgive you and feel safe with you again." Juyeon scolded and as I watched them through a little split between the door of the gym hall I saw him grabbing Sunwoo by the collar of his muscle shirt aggressively, having dangerous sparkles in his eyes.
"Either you will do it or I will! And maybe one of us will take her from you. Someone who cares about her heart and feelings." Juyeon grabbed him harder and shook him.
I couldn't watch and hear that any longer so I decided to interrupt their fight.
I abruptly swung the door open, earning all of the boy's eyes.
I approached them pretty fast and pushed Juyeon from Sunwoo.
I didn't want them to hurt each other, although probl all I was for them was a little doll to play with.
"Stop. This is kindergarten. You all are so immature, I can't believe it." I sighed heavily.
Then I locked eyes with Sunwoo, staring in his soul mercilessly.
"You really never would have told me? God, it is really frustrating when you find out, you never knew who your only friends really are. You are little boys, all you care about is fun. Grow the fuck up!" I scoffed at my broken state.
Being ashamed that I had let them do so much to me already.
I looked at all of them. Sunwoo, Juyeon, Jacob, Kevin and Eric. I was honestly disappointed.
And they were also guiltily looking back at me.
"What? Are you enjoying seeing me suffer under your game?" I asked.
"Look Y/N, we are truly sorry for what we did. I know it was immature and I promise we will make it up to you."
I scoffed again at Juyeon's words with a weak sarcastic smile on my lips.
"Do you think I still want to hang out with you guys? You betrayed me. I'm not dumb, I know you sprayed rumours around about me, just so everyone was going to keep their distance to me. And I think you didn't even realize that you did this so you had me just to yourself. While I was too blind of happiness. I hate you for what you did. I won't be your puppet any longer!" I made clear while my vision started to blurry because my eyes were getting teary.
Sunwoo grabbed my arm in desperation.
"Please don't break up with me." His begging voice sent a shiver down my spine.
"That's all you have to say? I think it would be the best if I would leave you and your games alone."
Tears started silently rolling down my cheeks.
But still, no one was talking or reacting. Just pleading eyes were looking at me.
"I wonder who will be the next victim. Whatever, I hope you will have your fun." I smiled pathetically and turned around.
"Don't leave us Y/N. We love you and never wanted to hurt you." Juyeon's calming voice stopped my movements.
I looked at him again.
"You love me so much that you forget how to care about my feelings? I loved you too, but it's over for now." I stated and left the hall.
They looked after me in sadness.
Third person's POV
"See what you did, Sunwoo!" Eric pushed him to the ground.
Sunwoo looked down, letting his tears fall on the ground as well.
"Now we all lost the only girl we ever liked!" Juyeon kicked Sunwoo in his stomach, making him clench his jaw in pain.
"Stop, Y/N doesn't like when we hurt someone, especially each other." Kevin wanted to stop him from hitting the crying boy on the ground by grabbing his arm.
But he wouldn't budge and continued, making him bleed and bruised all over.
"She is gone now!" Juyeon yelled and kicked Sunwoo again, earning quiet cries and groans from him.
"It's enough!" Jacob shoved him away from the almost defaced Sunwoo.
"You can't hurt your best friend!" He reminded him with a strong tone.
"But he stole the girl that was supposed to be mine. It's his fault she left us!" Juyeon defended himself.
"We all lost her, Juyeon. But you don't have to hurt Sunwoo even more. Don't you see him?"
Juyeon now looked at him, sitting on the ground, still crying, with bruises all over his body and a bleeding nose and lip.
Now he felt slightly sorry for overdoing it, although he knew that Sunwoo's beloved girlfriend just broke up with him. That alone surely were so painful for him already.
Of course it was too much to handle for him.
After all Juyeon is the older one and he should have kept his control instead of beating him up.
And Sunwoo had even endured it, he did not flinch a single time that Juyeon punched him.
"Hey, sorry bro." He tapped his shoulder in apology.
"I will take you home, come on." Jacob helped him to stand up so they could walk to his car.
•the next day•
Sunwoo walked through the busy halls of his high school.
He was sad, angry at himself and depressed.
He loved her so bad but he screwed up.
And he understood why Juyeon beat him up yesterday, he was glad so he wouldn't have to hurt himself for a while.
His head was down and the playful smile he always wore was completely gone.
Suddenly he felt a small hand grab him, that pulled him to the narrow room where stuff for the facility manager was.
He couldn't make out the face of the person that took him there until she was standing face to face with him in this room.
Now his eyes glowed, it was the prettiest face he had ever seen.
It was his girl, the one that broke his heart just yesterday. But all he cared about was that she was standing in front of him now.
Y/N's POV
It was me, and he had broken my heart even more.
"Who did this to you?" I wanted to know instantly, coming straight to the point.
"Huh?" He was surprised I even talked to him.
"Who beat you up like this?" I exerted more pressure in my voice.
"Oh, um.." Sunwoo looked down, suddenly so shy and insecure.
What was going on?
Usually he was the one that would do this to people that bothered him, but he would never let someone do this to his handsome face.
I wondered if his face was the only affected place on his body, so I slowly lifted up his thin t-shirt, exposing hurted muscles and bruises all over his stomach.
It looked really painful.
I never saw him being hurt that much. And it also affected me.
To know that I hadn't had protected him, made me feel guilty.
I felt bad.
"Sunwoo, who the fuck did this to you? And why did you let this even happen?"
He was looking in my eyes, down at me, not sure if he should tell the truth.
But I think he learned his lesson, lying is bad and has consequences.
"It was Juyeon. But it's fine, I allowed him." He talked unusually quietly and I didn't like it at all. I hated it.
I wanted my confident Boyfriend back that wanted to hold my hand the whole day and whenever he had the chance, kissed me to give me his love and affection.
Where was the old Sunwoo?
"Why?"
How could Juyeon do this to him?
He, no, all of them knew what I thought of physical aggression.
"I miss you Y/N." He cried in the crook of my neck after he had made a quick step forward.
When I didn't move, he put his hands around my waist and hugged me gently.
"It's been one day." I reminded him.
He could have handled that.
"Yes, but I know that I lost you forever." He hugged me tighter.
I heard him sniff his tears back.
"Why do you care so much?" I started patting his back lightly.
Even though he hurted me so much with his actions, I still cared about him. More than about anyone else.
"Because I love you Y/N."
He really did?
I knew he and his friends were a little obsessed with me, but he never actually said these three words.
And now I even knew, he wasn't the only one that had serious feelings for me.
Juyeon had done this to him because he was angry at Sunwoo that I left him, and also his friends.
I figured that he did this because he also had feelings for me. I could judge only by his look and body language the day before. And I wasn't sure if that was a good thing.
Iliked him too, everyone of them, but not the way I liked Sunwoo. It would make things even more complicated between us.
"Why did you do this to me then?"
Sunwoo backed away a little, so he could see my face properly.
"We didn't know you when we started this. But when we got to know you, each of us felt something. I guess we just weren't aware that we were having feelings for you because we never really had some for anybody. So we were toxic and manipulated you and everyone that was interested in you, so no one would steal you from us. And I'm so so sorry, baby. I wanna have you back, I promise I changed."
I was impressed that he had explained everything so truthfully.
And I was proud in some way.
He had always controlled me, but he also always was my little boy.
They all were clingy and needy around me, just how someone would act when they liked someone.
I think I could forgive him if he would prove to me that he had really changed.
But could I forgive Juyeon for doing this to his best friend, for losing his self control and letting him down like this?
"And why let you Juyeon hurt you? You are supposed to be kind to each other, as friends. He truly hurt you. Look." I stroked my thumb over his lip where a little bit of dried blood was left.
On his left cheek was a big, green and blue bruise that went up to his eye. It was a bit swollen and he couldn't open his left eye completely.
I forgot everything around me and just admired his his cute baby face. Even if he looked a bit tired and miserable, I still found him utterly adorable.
"I wanna kiss you, Y/N." He whispered, when I noticed our position and that he was staring at me as well.
But I just didn't care anymore what he had done to me, I was sorry for what his friend did to him and that he was sad because I left him.
So I shove all my doubts away and tiptoed so I could kiss his full lips to convince my heart, that I had to give him another chance. It was everything I wanted at this moment.
I think I loved this boy.
Although it was probably pretty stupid of me to trust him again, I just needed him too much because he was everything I had and everything I always wanted.
He pressed me against his toned body and gave me a kiss full of love, to show me that I wouldn't regret choosing him over everything.

Undone by “Darling”
REQUEST (from @november-solarstorms): Celebrating another year of this earth being braced by Tom Hiddleston's presence! Lol. Might I make a prompt request? I feel as though it would be interesting to read from Loki's POV to explore the dynamics between him and a human female who is just as intelligent as he. She has a sharp wit and even sharper tongue. Her sarcastic and clever nature enable her to out-banter Tony Stark, the king of snark himself (may he rest in peace). But she is also just as flirtatious and salacious. She never blushes, never falters, and is incredibly clever. You can decide the nature of their encounter. Really im just in it for a good game of cat and mouse.
A/N: Okay, I had SO MUCH FUN writing this!! And yeah, this will run a bit longer than my usual fics lol. Also, there IS a Loki POV, just keep reading thaaanks <3
WARNINGS: none.
WORD COUNT: 1,932

Undone by “Darling”
17 hours and 6 white chocolate mochas later, it was finally ready - an upgraded version of Corvus Glaive’s glaive, this one spec-ed out to your fancies and requirements. It was a beast, and definitely not something Nick Fury would ever let you play around with, even if you made it.
Satisfied with your work, you remove your safety goggles and grin at Stark, who is working on his own weapon he scavenged from the Black Order.
‘I’m done!’ you say triumphantly, causing him to look up and groan. ‘How did you finish before me!?’ he lowers his glasses and looks at your weapon. ‘I’m smarter’ you say. ‘I went to MIT’ ‘And I didn’t, yet here we are, both in the same lab’.
He shakes his head, not unlike a petulant child, causing you to laugh.
‘How far along are you?’ you ask. ‘Still running diagnostics’. ‘Still!?’ ‘Have you seen the size of his hammer?’ he gestures to Cull Obsidian’s chain hammer on his work table, but the innuendo doesn’t escape you and you grin at him. He facepalms. ‘Y/n, for god’s sake...’ ‘You’re just tired, or you’d appreciate the joke too’.
You stretch your weary body and let out a deep breath. You’d test the weapon out tomorrow, but for now, you need a nap.
‘Take a load off, Stark. Hammer’ll be there tomorrow’. ‘Oh, you’d like that wouldn’t you...’ he puts his goggles back on and get to work.
xx
Loki’s POV:
Humans are surprising, but I always knew that. I never thought them boring, even if my brother says I do. Humans are of so little power but such incredible resilience that it’s frankly astonishing. I am inclined to believe that sometimes resilience is just stupidity... in most cases, I am right. But that’s not to say I haven’t come across some truly brave people.
Take the Avengers Tower, for example.
Just in here, you have Y/n, a brave soldier with the mind of an intergalactic scavenger, and I do mean that as a compliment. She’s awfully clever, she can build better than Stark, and has a track record of finishing every mission to perfection and before time. And then you have the Super Soldier Steve Rogers, a big muscled, big hearted idiot who often mistakes challenging our enemies for bravery and morality.
The two couldn’t be more different, but they get along like siblings. Not siblings like Thor and I... better adjusted, perhaps.
They sit in front of me, talking about some mission while they play Chess. Her moves are quick but calculated, his take more time because he’s more interested in telling his story than playing the game.
‘...so there I am, no weapons, no shield, bang in the middle of the Serpent Citadel...’
He’s a good storyteller, I’ll give him that. But not as good as Y/n. She paints quite a picture, full of delicious gory details and horribly dark jokes.
‘Steve, you have to pay attention, you’re losing’ she says. ‘Yeah, I don’t actually know how to play chess, I just wanted you to listen to my story’.
She looks up at him, almost offended. ‘STEVE...’ ‘Cool, I’m gonna go wrap Stark into a game of Battleships and tell him about my fight with Copperhead’.
She laughs as he leaves the room, and she puts the chess pieces away.
‘We could play?’ I ask her. ‘Is the God in a mood to lose?’ ‘Over confidence isn’t attractive in anybody’. ‘Oh darling, neither is telling someone what is and isn’t attractive’.
She’s never called me that before, and in the context it should seem cutting, but it isn’t. ‘Darling?’ ‘Problem?’ ‘It’s quite a term of endearment to set someone straight’.
She says nothing.
‘Cat got your tongue?’ I tease her. She only smiles and continues putting the pieces away neatly. Stark’s chess set is gold and black, all individually carved pieces. The pawns are all Iron Man suits, but that’s to be expected. She handles them with the care Stark would.
‘I mean...’ I continue, ‘honestly, if someone heard, they’d never let you live it down’.
And she carries on, unbothered.
‘Y/n!’ ‘Oh dear, look at you come completely undone with just one term of endearment’ she comments, shutting the chess set. ‘Whatever would happen if I held your hand?’
The very thought of it seemed to drain my brain of blood. I unwillingly glanced at her hands, working the lock mechanism of the box, her blue veins prominent.
‘Cat got your tongue?’ she asked.
I stood up, the human emotion of embarrassment becoming too familiar for me. ‘I’ll have to see you at lunch’. ‘Sure, darling’.
Oh, I hate how she’s enjoying this.
----------
The next day, Y/n booked a training room to test out the Glaive, and Stark had a rusty but working chain hammer. Steve insists on trying it out anyway, and now our breakfast is being spent on discouraging him from doing that.
‘Guys... if nothing else, I’ll still have my shield. Let me test it out!’ ‘Y/n’s glaive cuts through Vibranium, you know that, right?’ Stark says. ‘Y/n wouldn’t do that’. ‘Oh yes she would’ Y/n says nonchalantly as she sinks her teeth into a bacon and egg sandwich.
As she does, the yolk runs down her fingers. She makes a sound at the inconvenience and sets the sandwich down, then grabs a napkin. I’m hardly ever crude, but the energy it took not to take her hand and lick off the yolk myself could burn every star in the galaxy.
Captain America scrunches his nose at her remark, severely offended.
‘In any case, that shield barely covers your giant body. It will force Stark to make you a new one’. ‘What do you care about his giant body’ Stark says. ‘It’s America’s ass, Tony’ she takes a sip of her iced coffee. Steve blushes, and Tony rolls his eyes.
----------
The training facility is magic, of course, somewhere between a mirror dimension and Wanda’s reality powers creating a safe cocoon inside the building so no one can be harmed. Y/n hardly trusted anybody to fight with her except Thor, but given the nature of Corvus’ Glaive, she knew magic would be required.
And so she called me.
After getting into my battle armour, I stepped into the facility, equipped with my sceptre and the teachings of the witches of Asgard.
She whistles as I walk in. ‘Trying to distract me from killing you?’ ‘Are you?’ I ask. She’s dressed in a black bodysuit, details of purple in her belt and weapon harnesses. ‘Why yes, I am. Glad you noticed’.
The glaive is on the floor, and she stomps her foot on one part of it so it swivels up and neatly places itself in her hand. She smiles.
‘Try to keep up. I’m not just looking for eye candy in a training partner, darling’ she says, getting into battle stance.
With nothing left to say for the second time this week, I aim the sceptre at her and the stone at the end glows.
She charges and I shoot at her, but she spins the glaive and creates a shield which absorbs the energy.
She continues to charge at me. I shoot again, and again the glaive takes the hit. Not a scratch on her.
Once she comes closer, she simply places the flat end of the weapon against my chest, sending me hurtling back into a wall.
She spins the glaive and laughs.
‘Compliments of Wakanda. It absorbs any hits and charges up with kinetic energy’.
I get up on my feet. This is far from over. I create multiple illusions to surround her, all of them brandishing knives, Chitauri tech, and sceptres.
‘Damn, suddenly my whole evening has opened up’ she says, looking around.
Even my clones look around at each other puzzled.
‘Come on then, who’s up?’ she spins the glaive around. ‘One at a time or all at once, baby’.
They charge at her, and I expected her to fight them off at once... instead she plants the staff on the ground and ducks, and a semi-circle shell grows from the top of the staff, down to the floor... like a mini fortress, completely impenetrable. It could, no doubt, continue to take hits and build up kinetic energy, so I call off the clones.
She gets up and retracts the shell. ‘Nanotech’ she grins at me. ‘The whole shell sits in a disk. It can withstand bombs and even a moon’. ‘Is there any tech you haven’t adopted?’ ‘I’m an intergalactic scavenger, aren’t I?’
I stare at her, horrified. Can she read minds?
‘Maybe I can. Or maybe I heard you tell Stark when he was complaining about me finishing my weapon first’.
Silence.
‘Also, darling, you’re awfully predictable in your fighting’.
She picks up every trick and tech she sees, so beating her is less about weapons and more about cunning.
No problem. Cunning is my specialty.
‘Ready now?’ she asks. ‘Mhm’.
She takes a deep breath to ready herself, her eyes shutting slightly. Once they open back up, she stares in shock.
In my Jotun form, I give her my most menacing smile.
She cocks her head to the side, studying my icy blue skin.
The illusion I cast of myself approaches behind her, dagger in hand. Once it’s close enough and I can almost taste my victory, she raises the glaive and in one swift motion, sticks it into its abdomen.
The illusion disappears into green light.
‘Cute’ she remarks. She points the glaive at me. ‘What else you got for me?’ I shift back to my Asgardian form and sigh. ‘You win’.
Y/n laughs and lowers her weapon. ‘Oh darling, I won the second you walked in wearing all that leather’. She winks at me, then walks out of the facility. I feel a blush creep to my face, much against my will.
-------------
‘Maybe you should stick to your guns, Tony’ Y/n says, ‘Fancy suits is it for you, chain hammers may be overshooting it’. ‘Is that what they taught you in the back alley you learnt ironmongery from?’ ‘Yes! Do you want their number, I’m sure they’ll have a spot on the waiting list for you’.
Ah. Y/n’s relationship with Stark seemed more like mine with Thor. While they banter, Steve and Natasha tear up from laughing. I wouldn’t go so far as to call this domestic, but it certainly is comfortable.
‘Come on, the glaive can’t be that good, right Loki?’ Stark asks.
The company looks at me expectantly. ‘To say her weapon isn’t good enough means to insult your own tech, Stark. Everything about it is founded on your theories’.
‘So technically, it’s my brain that made the glaive so cool’ he tells Y/n. ‘Yeah, you could say that. The glaive comes from the same mind that manufactured Captain America’s dinner plate’.
Steve doesn’t find that one funny, but Natasha does, sending her into peals of laughter.
‘Oh whatever’ Tony huffs. ‘I’m going back to the lab’.
He stands up and Y/n grabs his arm. ‘Aww Tony, I’m just kidding!’ she pats his hand, ‘Look, you’re a brilliant inventor, we all have our slow days’.
He sighs and nods, and holds her hand. ‘Thanks... I guess I’m just not in my element, you know?’ ‘Yeah...’ she keeps patting his hand.
And the feeling of domesticity creeps in. We really are all a family. Y/n smiles encouragingly at Tony, and Tony seems more relaxed.
‘So, you want me to get you the number of that ironmongery, or...?’ ‘OH FOR...’ he snatches his arm away and storms out of the room, with Steve and Nat losing it all over again.

It’s Nothing Serious - Chapter Two
Chapter One
Warning: oral (m receiving), unprotected sex
It’s not serious.
Two adults can sleep together and be fine. You’ve done it before. It’s kind of nice, actually – you get the milk and don’t have to put up with the emotionally unavailable cow. And even though you’ve only known him for a few weeks, you know that’s what Javier is: emotionally available. Physically available? Different story. He lets you know as much when, after a few more rounds, you start to get dressed.
“So, should I leave the money on the dresser?” you ask as you come back into the room, your skirt crumpled in your hand. He smiles around his third cigarette as you shimmy the skirt back up. You don’t really know why you’re bothering, to be honest- your apartment is five feet away and it’s 3 AM on a Wednesday. Anyone who would see you rush to the door in your underwear probably has a lot more going on than to be distracted by a half nude school teacher doing the world’s shortest slut strut.
“It’s about 100,” he jokes back. You twist your face as you bend down to snatch your shirt from the floor and pull it over your shoulders.
“Pricey, but fair.” Somewhat dressed, you stalk over to his side of the bed and pluck the cigarette from his lips, taking a long drag yourself. His hand comes to rest on your thigh as you exhale.
“This isn’t going to be weird, is it?” you ask, flicking your eyes back down to him. “It was good, but I hope I didn’t lose my smoking buddy.”
‘Buddy’? God. You hang out with kids too much.
He smiles and reaches up to take back the cigarette you hold out. “Don’t worry, hermosa. I don’t scare easy.”
“Friends then?”
His eyes flick up and down your body before falling back on your face. He takes a drag.
“Yeah, friends.”
The way he enunciates tells you exactly what being friends with Javier is going to entail. You smile and bend down, catching his mouth in a quick peck.
“See you later, friend.” You stand up and give him a quick smile before picking up your purse from where you left it by the door and saunter out to the hall.
You don’t see him until the late afternoon Sunday when you take a break from grading to go stand on y’all’s usual spot to light up. He’s already there, smoking a cigarette that’s more ash than tobacco. He doesn’t even look up when you saunter up next to him, your hair up in a nest, and light your own.
“Lot on your mind?” you ask.
“What?” his voice is more on edge than you expected. You frown and gesture to his smoke.
“Think you forgot to ash,” you say.
He huffs and pulls the cigarette out of his mouth, pressing it into the concrete on the steps with more vigor than is required.
“Something up?”
“Mind your own fucking business, will you?” he snaps. You physically recoil from him as he starts down the stairs, his hands in his pockets. You’re too stunned to say anything, watching his back until he’s out of earshot. Annoyed, and suddenly not in the mood, you stub out your mostly intact cigarette and head inside.
To be honest, you’re still steaming about it when there’s a knock on your door that night. Already in your sleepwear, you push yourself up from where you’ve been lounging on the couch, reading some trashy paperback you picked up from the airport months ago. You leave against the door, avoiding looking through the peephole – some trick your dad taught you.
“Yeah?” you call out.
“It’s me.”
You frown. You do want to open the door, but there’s a question of self-respect. Do you let the man you’re casually having sex with, who then treated you like shit, into your house, where you know you could happily drop your pants for him once again if he looks at you with even the slightest bit of regret and/or horniness? You’re a strong woman but you’ve been walking funny all weekend, and if you’re honest it’s been pretty nice.
Your indecision speaks for you because from the other side you hear:
“I thought- I’d explain. About earlier.”
Yeah, there goes that resolve. You flick the deadbolt and swing the door open so you’re sat in the doorway, your hand still resting on the doorknob as you consider him with a look you hope is at least a little intimidating, although it’s hard to maintain upon seeing him. He looks rough.
“Hey,” he says.
“Hey,” you echo back.
“…What’s up?” he asks.
“Mostly just minding my own fucking business.”
He purses his lips and looks beyond you. “I deserve that.”
A beat passes. You try and keep up your icy, indifferent demeanor, daring him to explain himself, despite the teacher in you wanting to pull him into a hug or potentially ask him to express his emotion through a crayon drawing. Instead, you fight the urge and just raise your eyebrows expectantly.
“Can I come in?”
You pretend to think about it for a moment before making a show of stepping aside and waving your hand into your apartment dramatically. He nods before walking in and stopping at the edge of your couch, letting you close the door behind him. He turns around at the sound, his hands on his hips pushing his jacket back just so. You both wait a minute, daring the other to speak, before giving in at the same time.
“Do you want something to drink – “ “I’m sorry about earlier-“
You both stop, waiting for the other to finish. He speaks first.
“Yeah, what you got?”
“Water, beer, or tequila.” You say, gliding past him to the small kitchen that overlooks the living room. You turn back, awaiting an answer. He’s still a thousand miles away.
“Beer.” He says finally. You nod and go to the fridge, retrieving two cans from the bottom shelf. Closing the door with your foot, you walk forward and hold the can out for him. He takes it but doesn’t open it. Annoyed, you make for your spot on the couch and plop down, pulling the tab back as you tuck your legs under you.
“You can sit down,” you say.
As if snapped out of a trance, he comes forward and sits on the opposite end of the couch. In a fluid motion, he opens the beer and throws it back for a long gulp. You study him from your perch, nursing the cold can in your hand. When he finishes his gulp, he leans forward, resting his elbows on his knees. The air around the two of you is tense, and the stomach makes your stomach flip.
“I’m sorry about earlier,” he says. You sit up, prompting him to look up at you. You bring the beer to your lips and take a sip, letting him know he’s got to offer a little more than that. He shakes his head.
“It’s- it’s a shit excuse. It’s just work.” He says.
“Yeah? Did the embassy cut the janitorial budget? No more Comet?”
He shakes his head. “You’re smarter than that,”
You fall silent and look at the space between you. You both know you never bought the excuse he gave you that night out, you just let him have it because it was easier to let him have his secrets, even if he noticed your eyes lingering on the gun strapped to his side when he first went up to the bar.
It was just supposed to be a drink.
Nothing serious.
“I am,” you say, setting your beer on the coffee table. You sit up and wait for him to respond. Instead, he takes another sip of his beer and makes to stand.
“I shouldn’t have bothered you,” he says, adjusting his jacket. “I’ll let you get back to your evening-“
“Javier,” you say. As you see him making for the door, you pounce up and grab his arm. He stills, and you drop it as if you just breached a barrier.
“You’re not bothering me,” you say. “You can tell me…or you don’t have to. It’s fine.”
He turns back and regards you with those eyes. Those fucking eyes. In this light, with the beers you’ve had, you feel suddenly so undressed in front of him. You bring an arm up to hold the opposite arm. It makes you feel less exposed
“Friends, remember?” you say, trying to recapture the jokey feeling from the previous night. Trying to make him feel comfortable. Like he can be light in here. With you.
He’s still for a second, but just as quickly as he popped up from the couch he’s got his hands on your face, pulling you into a desperate kiss. It’s messy and hard, but you let him take the lead, opening your mouth when he presses his tongue between your lips. His hands drop to your waist and clutch at you, pushing your ugly, old University shirt up to touch your skin. Everything feels so urgent like if he let his hold on you relax even a little you’d float away from him. You feel the hardness in his jeans as he holds you against him, and you try to kiss him back with equal ferocity before realizing maybe he needs this kind of harsh control. So you relax, letting him take the lead and paw and gnaw at you. He leaves a trail of harsh, open mouth kisses along your neck that you know are going to leave marks, and you make a mental note to wear a turtle neck tomorrow to avoid the inevitable, unintentionally shaming little innocent voices asking “Señora, qué es esto?”.
Why do little kids notice everything?
Eagerly, as if he’s realized it’s the one thing that’s been keeping him from peace all day, he pulls your shirt over your head and throws it somewhere behind you. You’ve already taken your bra off, and his head dips down to take one of your nipples in his mouth, swirling his tongue around the point before giving it a quick, testing bite. You let out a little gasp as he switches to the other, and for a moment you forget his face at your door – sad, like a puppy dog that got kicked – and the dullness of his voice, so different from just a few days earlier. This feels different too- not so much fun, but release.
You’ll let him have it.
Your knees hit the edge of the couch and, a creative idea coming to your head, you drop from the kiss and sit yourself on the arm, focus now on undoing his belt. Above you he strips his jacket off, dropping it to the floor. You pull the belt out of the loops with all the show of a circus lion tamer cracking a whip and immediately being to pull at the buttons and zipper. Aggressively, -maybe too aggressively, calm down, the dick isn’t going anywhere, Eloise- you pull the jeans down past his ass and lurch forward, catching the head of his cock between your lips and sucking. Above you, he hisses, and you bring your hand to him, wrapping your fingers around the top as if it were an extension of your mouth. Gathering spit from the back of your throat, you take him deeper, trying to coat his length. His hands come up to grab at your hair, and you’re encouraged to go faster. Suddenly taking care of him is the only thing that matters anymore. Your other hand reaches forward and presses up against his sac, and the groan from above you is enough of an indication that he approves. You pull him out of your mouth and flick your eyes up forward, holding eye contact as you lick along the side of him. The way his mouth falls open is enough encouragement to return to your work in earnest, and for the next five minutes, you’re working your jaw like a fucking snake – pulling him into the back of your throat, tickling the underside of him all the while before returning to give attention to the head.
Without warning, you feel hands on your shoulders, and before you can protest – no, I want to do this, I want to do this for you – your back is against the leather of the couch cushions. You stare up at him as he finishes undressing, his eyes are so dark and focused as he drops the clothes to his feet. In a fluid motion, he pulls your night shorts and underwear down, depositing them with the rest of his clothes as he crawls over you. You scoot back until your head is pressed against the pillow just fifteen minutes earlier you had nearly fallen asleep drooling on. He hooks your leg up, opening you up for him as he slithers up to kiss you again.
“Are you-?”
“Yeah,” you say.
It’s enough. Seconds later he’s sheathing himself inside of you, and despite yourself, despite that stupid cool disposition you opened the door with, you let out a moan. Harsh fingers grab your chin and pull you back into a kiss, cutting you off as he continues to pound into you at an unforgiving pace. God, it feels good. It’s been years since you’ve had sex without a condom, and you’ve forgotten how nice and right it can feel to have someone inside you without a barrier. You hum into his mouth as he pulls away, dropping his lips to your neck as he continues, hard and unforgiving and perfectly painful in a way that you’ll carry in your walk for a week. Embarrassingly, you’re so wet, and the excess slick only makes the sounds coming from between the two of you more obscene. You clench yourself around him, earning yourself a moan as he sucks a bruise onto your collarbone – it's okay, remember, turtleneck -and bucks into you, faster than before.
“Fuck,” you breathe as he continues. “Fuck!”
“Yeah?” he asks, his hand coming up to grab your breast. He pinches your nipple between his forefinger and thumb, and you let out another moan. Instead of answering, you dig your nails into the meat of his ass, urging him forward and deeper into you. It must have an effect because it’s his turn to moan into your ear, for you to hear the string of curse words that tumble from his stupid, perfect mouth. Encouraged, you press against his back, bringing him closer as you ride him from below. He sucks as his teeth and leans into it when you try again. You bend down and suck at the spot where his neck and shoulder meet, doing your best to leave a mark. Fair’s fair.
A few more minutes into this and you don’t think you can hold it off any longer. Opening your legs as much as possible, begging him to go as deep as he can, you finally let your body go. It’s deep and internal, a different sensation than when you’re circling yourself alone in your bed. It seems to pull him deeper and crush him in between the impossibly strong spasms. You let out a little cry, which is all it takes for him to finish. Seconds later you feel him pulse inside you, warmth spreading deep inside of you. He falls atop of you, both of you breathing heavily as you come down from the high. You both stay like that for a moment, two sweaty bodies flopped atop of the other, basking in the afterglow. After another minute he pulls back and kisses your chin before pulling himself from you – you’re proud, you only let out a small pathetic sound of disapproval – before he’s up, making for your kitchen. He returns a moment later, a wet rag in his hand. You try not to remember that you used that same cloth to clean up split orange juice that morning as you take it, pressing it between your legs as you sit up. You reach forward for your beer and take a sip as he settles beside you, two cigarettes once again caught between his lips. He lights yours first and passes it to you, which you take gratefully. For a moment, the two of you relax in the afterglow, naked and sweating on your shitty couch, sucking on cigarettes and waiting for your heart rate to go back down.
“I saw a kid get shot,” he says out of nowhere. It's enough to jolt you upward. You turn to look at him, but he’s staring forward, lost in his own thoughts. He brings the cigarette to his lips again.
“…Fuck.” You say. Because what else can you say? Try and make him feel better, tell him you’ve lost students to the same bullshit he seems to be fighting? Yes, that’s always the solution- more dead kids.
“Couldn’t have been older than nineteen,” he says. “Other…kids were there. Saw it.”
You bite your lip and study his profile. You’re not sure what to say. Is there anything? If you were in his position, you’d probably hate someone trying to fill the silence. To make you feel better. Like people can’t just sit with something uncomfortable and true. It reminds you home, of the family you grew up in. You want to show him that isn’t you.
So, you swing your legs onto the ground and move to sit closer to him. He notices but says nothing. The two of you sit in silence, the smoke from your cigarettes intermingling in the smell of sex and sweat that permeates the air around you. He finishes his cigarette first, and you stub yours out – in what, solidarity? – before reaching to catch his hand in your own. He stills, but lets you interlace your fingers.
“You don’t have to-”
“Friends, Javier.” You say again. He turns to look at you and you hold his gaze, daring him to say something against you. A beat passes, and he drops his head. Reaching out, you pull his head to your lips and press a kiss against his temple. Leaning back, you pull him down with you, letting his head lay on your chest as you pull the ratty blanket over the two of you. You listen to his breaths go in and out, as you trace mindless patterns through his hair. After a few moments, his breathing evens out, and you realize he’s asleep. Letting out a sigh, you close your eyes and soon follow suit.
The next morning, when you wake up alone on your couch, you try not to let the ache in your chest settle. When you leave that morning, alone for the first time in weeks, you try not to overthink it. And later, then night, when you’re lying in bed and hear another woman’s groans permeate the wall between your bedrooms, you try not to finger the bruises on your neck and ignore the ache between your legs.
It’s not serious.
