For the ship opinion, Arwen.

[Send me a ship and ill give you my brutally honest opinions about it]

Most people who dislike Arwen have one main criticism: the heteronormativity. There is very little buildup or chemistry to their relationship, yet by nature of them being opposite genders we have to suspend our disbelief and swallow the romantic/sexual tension the writers are shoving down our throats.

And for the most part, i agree. Aside from a few cute shippy scenes in later seasons, Arwen is almost textbook heternormativity. More than that, it perpetuates a tired and in some ways harmful trope: the Fixer-Upper Boyfriend.

You know the type. The guy is rough around the edges and deeply flawed, but easily redeemed via edgy tragic backstory. The well-meaning good girl swoops in to help heal his broken heart. "I can fix him," she says, sounding less like a girlfriend and more like the host of an HGTV home renovation show.

This idea of 'fixing' someone through sex love has become romanticized and idealized by media, creating harmful relationship goals in the minds of young children. Girls, as with all things, are conditioned to be providers who give and help their partner with very little reciprocation from the other party to show for it. They're expected to be a housekeeper, sex doll, mother, and therapist for the men in their lives. Whereas boys are conditioned to believe they aren't capable of resolving their own personal issues and must instead rely on women for everything that doesn't involve being emotionally constipated.

Arwen is very clearly a perpetuation of this. Gwen has to teach him right from wrong, be his moral compass, be the responsible one, take care of him. And while it's not a bad thing for lovers to help each other grow, a lot of times it feels like she has to hold his hand and put up with his entitled behaviour. Gwen is expected to sit and wait for a man who doesn't do anything for her besides promote her and sometimes rescue her from perilous situations. Did he comfort her after her father died? Did he give her advice on her problems? How many of his romantic gestures weren't the result of Merlin's help?

It's a conditioned entitlement Arthur has that Gwen is here to provide him comfort and emotional support, that caused him to banish her. But killing or banishing someone for cheating on you is extreme, not to mention traumatizing. Just because he couldn't bear to look at her after her quasi-betrayal, he thought it was fair to uproot her from her home and friends.

Even if she hadn't been enchanted into a situation that's essentially fantasy sexual assault (since neither party technically consented - Gwen was magic-roofied, Lancelot literally had all of his bodily autonomy stolen by Morgana), Arthur's reaction was still outlandishly harsh. If he truly loved her and didn't just see her as a Therapist He Can Kiss, then he would have put her best interest at heart regardless of what she did.

And the thing that bothers me most is that it didn't have to be like this. Like with most things in BBCM, the show already contains all the building blocks it needs to create a compelling narrative. They could have taken their time with Arwen, could've made the relationship more mutual: Arthur learns to respect Gwen for her skills with blacksmithing and her stubborn spirit, while Gwen learns to respect his compassion and desire to serve his people well. Maybe he takes her sparring and she shows him how to sneak into the kitchens. Arthur helps her be more confident, Gwen helps him be more considerate. They both support each other through difficult emotional times and call each other out on their mistakes (and Gwen has to make mistakes too, not just Arthur). And when Gwen is cursed into cheating on him, he handles it like a responsible adult and later apologizes to her when the truth comes out.

At its best, Arwen is about self-improvement and bringing out the best in each other. And the BBCM writers could have very easily used those themes to create a heartfelt, believable relationship. It's not even hard. But due to hetenormativity and amatanormativity giving creators the lazy way out, Arwen never achieved its full potential.

Writing Romance: Pining

We’ve all had crushes. We catch feelings for that cute somebody. Some people watch helplessly from afar, but others walk right up to the one they’re crushing on and ask them out. Again. And Again. And Again. No matter how many times they get rejected. So, I want to break down this romantic trope and highlight why it works in some instances and not in others.

If you looked at Fry and Leela’s relationship in Futurama and Elfo and Bean’s relationship in Disenchantment, you would assume they’d hold the same weight. Both were created by the same person, and Fry and Elfo are both losers hopelessly pining after a strong confident girl who could kick their asses. So why then do I cringe every time Elfo makes a move on Bean, but Fry’s pursuit of Leela is charming? It’s all about the execution.

In Futurama, Fry and Leela are completely separate characters. Although Fry shows an attraction to Leela in episode 1, the first time there’s a genuine display of romance between them wasn’t until season 2 when the crew went aboard the Titanic. Fry has interests and hobbies that don’t involve Leela at all. There are episodes that focus on his relationship with Bender, dealing with his feelings about being so far from his own time, and getting into wacky hijinks on alien planets. For the first few seasons, Fry’s pining took a backseat to his everyday escapades. Leela is just as fleshed-out as Fry. She is a totally independent character with her own goals, backstory, issues, and character traits. Her desire to find her planet of origins and find her place in the universe, her love of animals, her short temper, and her responsible nagginess is in no way dependent on Fry’s character even needing to be in the show to work. But more importantly, Fry didn’t just endlessly pursuit Leela on a baseless feeling of entitlement to her. It was always clear that Leela felt at least a little something for Fry, as there were many quiet moments with her showing her warming up to Fry. Whether it was bonding over their nebula on the titanic, Burning a hole in the picture of Chazz and symbolically seeing Fry as an option for the first time, deciding to forget the coin toss and just go out with Fry of her own will, Realizing that he gave up his oxygen to keep her safe, becoming enamoured with the perfect Fry created by the super worms, and wanting to hear how Fry’s opera ends, even when he lost the ability to play the music as beautifully, there is a clear and steady build-up to Leela coming around to Fry. Fry likes Leela, and he does pursuit her, but dating Fry isn’t just Leela getting fed up with turning him down, there’s a genuine development of reciprocated feelings that genuinely feels earned.

The same is not true for Elfo. Elfo serves no real purpose in Disenchantment. If Bean was not in the show, he would have no real goals or purpose. He states in episode 1 that he wants to experience things other than constant happiness, but then he shows no interest in pursuing this goal upon meeting Bean. All of his character is either pining after Bean or being Bean’s nagging conscience. The show goes out of its way to beat us over the head that Bean has no interest in Elfo. From blatantly calling the spot at her feet “The Friend Zone” and telling Elfo to sleep there, to eating what the audience is supposed to think is Elfo’s leg and saying she likes it, but only as a friend, this pairing completely misses the point of Fry and Leela that made it so charming. And while Fry could get jealous of other guys Leela had an interest in, Elfo is downright possessive, sabotaging her relationships with guys she shows interest in. Where as Fry is generally a nice guy who doesn’t act entitled to ownership of Leela, Elfo deliberately hurts and lies to Bean to manipulate her. As a result, they have no chemistry, and I wasn’t at all saddened by Elfo dying toward the end of season 1. Frankly if they left him dead or forced him to live far away from Bean for a season or two, it might help give him a personality outside of obsessive stalker.

Althought I was an avid Klance shipper, had Allurance at least been well-written I could have unenthusiastically lived with it. But Allurance was straight up toxic from every angle. First and most importantly, Allura never showed any interest in Lance. Unlike Leela who slowly warmed up to Fry and came to like him on her own gradually, Allura always looked annoyed and frustrated whenever Lance hit on her. It wasn’t until after Lotor broke Allura’s heart that she suddenly and randomly gained feelings for Lance literally out of nowhere. It wasn’t earned, there was no build up to the payoff, and Lance didn’t act any differently to change her opinion of him. The only reason Allura finally settled for Lance was because she felt betrayed, she knew Lance wouldn’t do that to her, and she used his feelings for her to validate her self-worth. The entire time they spent as a couple, she completely disregarded his feelings, his opinions, his concerns, his needs, and his help. At no point during their relationship did she put Lance first. He always had to put her needs above his own. And who did Lance turn to when he needed someone to lean on? Oh right, Keith. Someone he has actual romantic chemistry with who doesn’t use him as an emotional bandage. And Lance has Allura on this pedestal, worshiping her like some kind of goddess, to the point that he can’t see the way she’s using him. And if he can see it, he’s choosing to ignore it because he spent so long and fought so hard to win her over, he’s afraid to say anything that would risk losing someone he perceives as being too good for him, when in reality, he’s way too good for her. This entire pairing is just toxic. They’re both terrible for each other.

But a hopeless pining idiot isn’t always excruciatingly painful. In the first three volumes of RWBY, Jaune Arc is hopelessly pining after Weiss Schnee. Every time he does, she turns him down. However, while he is still on the cringy side of “can’t take a hint”, he is able to put Weiss first. When he finds out she likes someone else, he actually gives the guy a pep talk and encourages the guy to go out with her. But with Weiss and Jaune being reuinted in season 5, and team RWBY being officially back together in season 6, we saw a glimmer of this ship rear its ugly little head and frankly, it hasn’t really earned the right to sail yet. While Jaune and Weiss have both matured, nothing has really changed between them. Neither of them has really done anything to shift their dynamic from what it was when Weiss so bluntly turned Jaune down before. If this relationship is ever going to have to work, they both need to adjust their attitudes and the way they see each other. Right now, the most Jaune has is an infatuation. They don’t yet have the kind of bond where they seek one another out or turn to each other for comfort or advice. There are no seeds of trust or mature understandings of who each other are. They simply aren’t in a good place to start dating unless they can learn to be vulnerable with one another.

Of course, not all good pining ships have to end in a relationship. Pearl’s love and admiration for Rose Quartz is beautifully complex, tying into her own feelings of worthlessness and how Rose made her feel like she was more than what society told her she was. Yes, Pearl had elements of toxicity herself, being possessive, jealous toward Greg, and putting Rose on a pedestal above herself. However, a big part of her character is learning to recognize and move past these feelings of entitlement toward Rose. Learning to accept, let go, and move on from this deeply rooted pining. The show fully admits that Pearl never had a chance with Rose. She never saw Pearl that way, and while Pearl’s feelings are not inherently invalid, and there’s a good reason for her to love Rose as much as she does, it doesn’t distract from the fact that Rose never returns Pearl’s feelings and Pearl simply needs to move on with her life.

While pining is not an inherently bad trope, it’s one that’s very easy to mess up. Too often it comes in the form of a “nice guy” who can’t take a hint, making the girl he likes angry, frustrated, or uncomfortable in the process only to be rewarded by being an unrelenting stalker. It’s important that with pining, it needs to be mutual, and it usually works best as a slow burn. A girl turning a guy down and him not stopping isn’t romantic, it’s creepy and annoying. A relationship isn’t built on one person idolizing the other and having the other person settle. It’s about understanding another person better than anyone else. Having someone you can be truly vulnerable and yourself with, who understand the way you think, and cares about you enough to be able to put themselves aside to give you what you need without taking it to the extreme of neglecting themselves in the process. Pining isn’t inherently funny, the loser getting the girl isn’t automatically romantic, and a just because it takes a girl seven seasons to give in to his relentless pursuit is not guaranteed to be endearing to your audience. If you do not build it properly, it will fall apart on itself. This trope needs to be used strategically and handled well to tug on an audience’s heartstrings, but when done right can have a very satisfying payoff.

Ah, I'm so sorry to hear that you've been getting hate for shipping Jo and Laurie. People can be so terrible. :( I'd love to hear more of your thoughts about them, but I understand if you prefer not to share more out of concern for the hate. Regardless, thank you for your answer.

Thank you! It’s really not a big deal, but I’m kinda at that point in my life where I really don’t need to be reading hateful comments about fictional ships on a website like Tumblr. And worst of all, most of these comments are added by people to gifsets I make. So, like, not only do I now feel like it’s risky to even post gifsets about Jo and Laurie, but also the very small amount of interaction I do get for my work is negative feedback. Not a good time. And it confuses me, because I kinda thought Jo and Laurie were a popular ship. And even if they weren’t, who cares? Amy and Laurie shippers already got everything they wanted in the film, why do they have to come after people who ship Jo and Laurie? Doesn’t make much sense to me. But yeah, overall I don’t think I should engage in the ship wars, I’m in my early twenties, I really am too old for this shit. But I will say this: to anyone who thinks it’s ok to comment (or write in the tags) negative things about a ship on an edit someone has spent time making and posting, you need to think about your life choices. And yes, this includes people who reblog the stuff and go “I hate the ship but I love their friendship” because bruh, that was not the point of the edit so like, just don’t interact. It’s that easy. If you don’t like something, don’t interact with it.

Sorry about that mild rant, Tumblr is very frustrating. But yeah, no, I think I’m good with talking more about them, and if someone is offended, they can (and should... I dare you, please) just block me. 

For some AU things, I really love the idea of Laurie actually receiving Jo’s letter and the consequences of that. I’ve seen a few fics kind of delve into that, but not really in the way I see it. So, maybe one day I’ll write like a fic based on it. Though that would make me kind of have to address the Amy situation, which I’m not really interested in writing about. But even as just a concept, Laurie finding Jo’s letter and reading it when it’s “too late” is just so bittersweet and I both love and hate the idea. Their entire scene in the attic is just full-on bittersweet. 

I fully subscribe to the idea (I mean, it’s not an idea, it’s what it says in the official script) that Jo didn’t actually run after Friedrich, and allegedly did end up marrying no one. Mostly because it’s what she wanted, ultimately, and also because I really don’t think she and Friedrich were compatible at all. I’m not really seeing it as “if Laurie can’t have her, no one can”, I just don’t see that relationship working. Even if Laurie and Jo had ended up together, I’m not confident that they would have needed to get married, or get married right away. They could have traveled around Europe together, as Jo had always wanted, and gotten to know each other as romantic partners and seen where it’d go from there. I don’t think Jo and Laurie are one of those traditional couples (or friends) in any aspect, so I can’t imagine the basic “marriage, then kids” formula for them. 

I really would have liked to have known what Jo wrote to Laurie in those letters while he was gone, the ones he never answered. I’m not expecting them to have included anything romantic (because if they had, Laurie probably would have felt more positive about answering them), but still, I would have liked to have read them. I truly think the two of them were best friends and as close as two people could possibly be, so their separation is even sadder because of that. I also hate that Laurie was not there for Jo when Beth died. Obviously that’s because he wasn’t in the country, but that’s when she needed Laurie the most, and he wasn’t there, which sucks. 

I’m not sure if anyone else noticed this, but Laurie is still wearing the ring Jo gave him even in the scene where Amy draws him. I just find it really heartbreaking that even after everything, he still couldn’t let her go. And Jo, too, still wears the red scarf shared by her and Laurie (which I assume originally belonged to Laurie) after all those years. I don’t think it’s that easy to let go of your first love (or any love), and Laurie’s facial expressions and reactions around Jo and Friedrich say everything I need to know about how he felt. 

My main headcanon for how I would have wanted Jo and Laurie to end up together would’ve been essentially what would have happened in the film if Amy had not gotten involved. I think I still would’ve wanted Laurie to go to Europe and Jo to have that time to figure out her thoughts, and when he’d return, she’d express her feelings and then, maybe they would go back to Europe together, because I really do want Jo to have that trip. Or alternatively, she figures out her feelings earlier and joins Laurie in Europe. A bit of a romantic sentiment not really befitting Jo’s personality, but the impulsivity is there. And that way, she could, again, see Europe. 

I think overall, I respect everyone’s opinions about the ships in this film, but I have found that I can’t personally understand where the reasoning for Amy and Laurie or Jo and Friedrich comes from. That is, no doubt, reflective of my own personal preferences and biases, and doesn’t reflect any kind of “truth”. This is just my opinion. In the script, they refer to Laurie as Jo’s childhood love, and I really do believe she loved him, and that they could have been an amazing couple. And as a lover of the good, old-fashioned friends-to-lovers trope, I would have liked to see it. A couple with mutual respect, admiration and 100% comfort around each other is a rare thing to find. All too often, Hollywood ships consist of two people who seem to hate each other, but that “hate” is supposed to be translated into some kind of sexual tension (also present in LW). I never understood this, so for me, Jo and Laurie were pretty much perfect. And, as kind of a sidenote, I adore how out-of-the-norm their aesthetic is. How many ships can you name where the man and the woman swap clothes consistently without it being a big deal? The two are so comfortable around each other, I’ve never seen anything like it. I think their chemistry is outstanding, their story is beautiful and even though they weren’t endgame, they’re still definitely my OTP and the only ship I’ve given a damn about in years. So, I think they did some things right.

oh this is ?? kind of a tough one bc i feel like i never Branched out in my spaces when it comes 2 being productive,, like a lot of my work is done in my bedroom just bc my desk is there and it’s the most convenient,,,, honestly im jus gonna say my favorite place to write would be from . my desk . bc it faces the window :-)

I TALKED ABT THIS BEFORE but b/ts’ hyyh series, my neighborhood, spring day by b/ts are a few inspirations for wtsf !!!

oKAY SO im gonna try to not make this too long SJKHJGS !! wendy is a very like . prickly character . shes like a cactus . nd she’s not too fond of letting ppl get close, but the ppl who do manage to get close to her are happie 2 learn she would actually die for them . loyalty is a Huge Huge part of her character, and she cares very deeply abt the people she calls family . shes also v sarcastic nd like . ‘open ur eyes dummy’ .

arthur is a kind of person who lives heavily on false pretenses . like he projects this image bc its an image that he can control nd he jsut Rolls w it , but hes actually someone who likes 2 tease his friends nd be friendly to them ,, hes got Issuez nd is very much the type of person to be like ‘o lol im ok :-)...’ nd prioritize the needs of others 

rafael is , in all honesty , just babey . he studied a lot during high school nd rly pushed himself beyond his limits bc he wants to be able 2 go 2 a good college on scholarship nd get a job 2 support his family , nd hes just ?? very responsible nd sweet but that can also manifest into him taking on more than he should nd burning out . 

piper is a very ,, honestlie kinda sad character kjHGJSJ she spends a lot of time just trying 2 appeal to other ppl bc she knows her interest in the supernatural make her a ‘weird’ person nd she wants to be able 2 have real friends ,, but when she learns 2 let go of this she’s very silly nd always making jokes During The Right time ..

Which character in your WIP could you relate to the most?

Thoughts/opinion on the mun:

We met: I believe you followed me first back at my old Morty blog, back at its beginning and I was still figuring him out lmao he still was a fresh meat rip my start at him lmao.

And then: It actually took us awhile until we actually got down to talk to each other- wished I had done it sooner bc DAMN. But when we did- oh man it was a blast. For starters, I have to thank you for actually helping me properly lay down my genderbend AU for Morty- it definetely was a boost in my confidence that I much needed! And it also gave me another ship I very much love for Morty hhh

And no I haven’t forgotten our shenanigans involving the verse where Morty is married to Lance, so he has to hang out and have a girl time with Clair. I love that so much.

I also have fond memories with Sabrina, I remember for sometime wanting to specifically build a manga verse just bc I wanted to make things easier for both of our muses lmao.

A situation or starter sentence for our muses:

For Sabrina:

I always liked this idea of Morty and Sabrina discussing their views on their own abilities/powers, they definetely won’t agree with each other’s views (Morty’s is just completely and utter negative towards his clairvoyance);

+ I don’t think we ever had the chance to discuss it- but would Sabrina be able to pick up, the fact that there is a part of Morty that is missing? Or that there is something unusual on him? The fact is that: Morty looked at the back of a Shedinja, and it has left scars on him (losing a chunk of his life energy, a loss of memory, etc.) I don’t expect her to feel any sympathy for him- but who knows.

For Clair:

We need a thread to crush my heart, bc I have feels for these gals alright. BUT, perhaps a thread taking place in the few days prior to Clair’s wedding? Morty knows how Clair loves her, but she still doesn’t take the whole thing too well.

Morty actually trying to be more feminine for Clair-- in fact have these two trying to be as girly as they can. Morty has forgotten how much fun she always had actually being all preppy, so have a moment of Morty rediscovering stuff about herself.

Morty and Clair exploring a region together? Or travelling somewhere- just gal pals......Totally being gal pals.....They are either hiking/backpacking or using other methods of transport.

Romance, Companionship, and Shipping

A recurring theme in several manga/anime is friendship/companionship. Something that can easily appeal to many since friendship is vital to living life to its maximum. Just like John Donne said: "No man is an island"

Experts realized long ago that human beings have the need not only of socializing but also of feeling appreciated by the those who they care for. Having people whom we can share our experiences and our success, people who can provide us with counsel or criticize a poor course of action, all of this is essential to our mental/emotional health and our very own personal development. Companionship can provide us with a sense of belonging that allows us to open up and freely express ourselves with our friends. We can have fun together, cry together, help each other out, etc.

On the other hand, values such as honesty and respect are necessary to maintain a friendship stable, as they're essential for friends to trust each other and have a truthful communication. Companionship can help us learn more about ourselves, and deal with stress more effectively. In fact, this emotional connection is an important part of our growth as human beings, as it enhances our social skills and helps us to define the worth we'll be giving to others as well as our very own self-worth

So it shouldn't be surprising many mangakas make their stories revolve around this premise. It's true such stories had great differences when it comes to themes, structure, tone, and focus. We have protagonists that struggle for self-improvement or do their best to earn others' acknowledgment or fight for peace and justice, or simply seek adventure and/or freedom while helping people along the way. But despite these differences, many of their stories focus on the theme of friendship/companionship (some more than others)

But what about the relationship we have with a significant person? I mean a romantic relationship...

To understand a basic definition of romantic love, we have to break through several preconceived ideas about this subject. Many people are prone to misinterpret "crushes" or mere "infatuation" to be "love". And media wasn't helping to make a clear distinction between these concepts, for many shows and movies relied for way too long on tropes such as "love at first sight" (something like an intense immediate attraction), or in other cases "sexual tension", all while ignoring how any relationship (including romantic love) should naturally grow. These trends obviously lead to several misconceptions, that result in a pretty shallow take on how relationships should be

This leads to many shippers to promote ideas based on a poor understanding of what is a well-written relationship. It moves shippers to disregard context, development, or the story itself, to overhype flowers, compliments, corny one-liners, and even overlook a clear lack of investment some characters display. And this is just putting it nicely, for there are people who see “hints” everywhere: frogs, carpets, buttons, nicknames, etc.

In fact, the most shallow pairings that shippers could promote, while aesthetically pleasing, are driven by the fact at least one the characters involved fits the most delusional of shipping fantasies

But if we take away such preconceived notions, we find out what makes a romantic bond something strong not only in literature but also in real life

A romantic bond at its very core is based on "love". This is a connection that develops gradually over time, becoming stronger and deeper. It can help people to overlook and/or endure the flaws of a significant other, accepting who they are as a whole. Such feelings should be expressed not only by means of mere words but rather through actions and meaningful gestures. Unlike "crushes" or "infatuation" it goes beyond physical attraction or any fantasies we may have For people to turn this emotional connection into a solid relationship, the very foundation of their romantic bond should be a deep companionship based on mutual faith/trust, affection, thoughtfulness, emotional support, among other things rated M for Mature XD

Joking aside, we can tell friendship/companionship and romance share many similarities; some core differences being that a romantic bond entails a stronger sense of compromise and a higher degree of intimacy

So what’s the point of explaining all of this? To help people understand that in order to build a strong and stable relationship it is necessary for the chemistry and the dynamic between the characters involved to develop in natural/organic manner. It doesn’t require the same mushy stuff some delusional shippers always demand.

A meaningful gesture to provide comfort and hope is more impactful than flowers. Mutual faith/trust is worth more than a compliment. Emotional support is a lot better than constantly lusting over people’s “hotness”. A growing emotional attachment is superior to a mere “crush” or "infatuation". For they’re the basis for a solid romantic relationship

Why? Because "True love goes beyond a romantic dinner, a stroll along the beach, or tons of compliments; True love is respect, faithfulness, compromise, trust, and support"

That’s how a potent bonding should look like!
