This Post is Mostly About Dazai

i personally don't see dazai with ADHD unless he also has autism. mostly i see him with autism tbh-

but you asked why, and for me, it's a bit hard to explain.

first things first, an important note is that everyone presents their neurodivergency differently, and ultimately, because we have little to no access to dazai's feelings and thought patterns, we couldn't really diagnose him easily (also i'm not a fucking doctor fuck if i know any diagnosis ever)

which in turn means he could just be really high masking. with his intellect, that really wouldn't shock me.

anyway you asked why !! so here we go !! second things second, let's go through some (mildly hopped up on drugs) evidence !!

fucker has evident thought pattern and communication differences from the people around him, to the point he doesn't really seem to consider himself human- as seen in his insistence he can't be killed and literally every interaction he ever had with anyone where he might as well be throwing pocket sand at them every five minutes (a common more internal sign of autism is feeling like an alien of some sort, and social 'deficiencies' (the community prefers differences) are literally a whole Thing)

fucker certainly has strong convictions, and adheres to them to the best of his ability firmly and single-mindedly- as seen when he literally turns his entire life upside down when the death of one single man challenges and ultimately overturns his belief system ('rigid' thinking is a symptom- however most autistic people agree it's less 'rigid' and more,, idk the right word so i'm gonna use 'firm'- basically yes i have firm beliefs and i follow them but if presented with contradicting evidence i will Reexamine. this is why so many autistic people are leftist, trans, etc, btw)

fucker hates pain, which could be read as a sort of analogy for sensory issues (this one is admittedly weak but i couldn't think of any examples of dazai having outright sensory issues so we're rolling with it)

fucker could be argued to vocal stim with how much he hums and sings, and the way he over-exaggerates his emotions when portraying them could also be a stim-ish behaviour (altho admittedly it goes more with the idea he's masking)

just fucking look at him tbh. high quality autism specimen

ofc, whenever i write him i increase these signs tenfold and add more sensory issues and general neurodivergent vibes just for the funsies of it, but i really think i only have to fudge around what's already there in his characterisation rather than make shit up (except for when i make the bandages be partly a sensory issues thing. that's just me being a little overzealous)

chuuya meanwhile,,, i mean you said yourself you kinda saw the ADHD in him, so honestly do i even need to say anything? this man is absolutely delightful, i love him. i honestly kinda think he's got the 'tism too but that's honestly just because i'm insane and the vibes are present but i couldn't explain it nearly as well as i could dazai. either way i love him so much !! look at him and his collection of fancy wines <3

but yeah. everyone presents their brain chemistry differently, so in any case, someone out there could probably make a compelling case using points i didn't think of or points that may be directly contradictory to mine. ultimately, i'm just a silly guy on the internet and my opinion is just my opinion, not the gospel. plus i'm not asagiri so i know jack all about the true inner workings of these guys. i'm just mentally ill and obsessed, tee hee <3

I can see Chuuya, but Dazai is just questions upon questions. IMO he's too highly functioning to have ADHD. maybe me not getting it is me projecting bc I cannot imagine myself being able to put up with so much stuff like he does. he's plans are always too complicated for me

I thought of ADHD Atsushi (Kyoka is neurotypical and really tries to put up with him) and autistic Akutagawa and Rampo and maybe Poe (so Rampoes are in their little corner in ADA office rambling about stuff being totally on the same wave) but not these two dumb rocks

adhd chuuya does sound nice though. I'll think about it. prepare to be terrified. I might not make his life worse with gender issues but neurodivergence is going to be a murder.
