heatwave
Prompt: no prompt, just stay hydrated bbys. this is me projecting the fear from the first time i passed out onto Janis, ft my dumb thought process of 'im fine'. Yes, that's right. I too, refuse to ask for help when I need it. Not just Janis. whoops. G/T MEAN GIRLS AU
The tiny portion of the school doesn't have AC. Which to be honest shouldn't be legal, but a lot of things at Northshore shouldn't be legal. No proper heating or cooling was the least of the tiny's issues.
When it's too cold, you wear a jacket. (Or skip and stay with Damian). When it's too hot, the tiny teachers bring in electric fans for their classrooms. Besides, the tinies only have like- four periods in the walls.
But it does become an issue during a heatwave.
It was almost 100 degrees in Northshore. There was no wind so the air felt stale and dry. Now imagine being in a wall.
I think I'm being cooked alive. The baggy jacket I live in probably doesn't help much though.
It was global, my last tiny class of the day. Aaron and I had advanced global together while Regina had normal global in the room next door.
I slumped in my chair not listening to the teacher at all.
Aaron and I sat together in the front of the room and the only pro to that was the fan was right there.
Not that it did much.
It was old and moved slow. It wasn't cooling anyone, just circulating the hot air.
I finished my water bottle three periods ago and I still had a headache. It wasn't awful, just annoying.
I tried to ignore the little spots in the corner of my eyes every time I moved my head.
Just a small headache.
Suddenly, the breeze disappears.
The fucking fan died.
"Oh, dear." My teacher says.
She a short old lady with circle glasses on the bridge of her nose.
"Oh, dear is an understatement," I mumble to Aaron who just shakes his head.
Our teacher tries to turn on the fan, but there's no sign of life. She even unplugs the wire and tries again.
"I guess it's fried." She says with a small laugh.
"So are we!" Some kid calls from the back of the class. I think its Glen Coco but I don't have enough energy to turn around and check as the rest of the class laughs.
Our teacher smiles warmly. "We've got ten minutes left in the period. Go hang out in the tiny cafeteria or something."
The tiny cafeteria is one of the few places in the school with AC for tinies. Which is nice because it's bearly bigger than a classroom, but they expect to fit all of us in it. It gets crowded and hot even with air conditioning.
Our teacher continues. "Just get somewhere cool. And drink water!"
Water sounded nice. I should have brought more than one bottle. I knew it'd be hot today.
Aaron ad I pack up our bags before standing. The world spins a bit but it feels just like my typical low iron issue.
The spots fade just like normal when I stand up too quickly and Aaron and I are off.
We pull Regina out of her class early saying 'it's for a class project'. The teacher didn't ask what class so we didn't specify.
"So," Regina says. "How did you guys get out of class?"
"Our teacher let us," Aaron explains as we walk through the halls. We're in the very back of the tiny section, furthest away from the tiny pick up zone. "Her fan died."
"No!" Regina said with genuine concern.
"Yeah, but she didn't make us stay long," I explained. My throat was dry and my voice sounded weird, but neither friends paid mind to it.
I tried to ignore the way the hallways spun. My limbs felt slow and heavy despite how fast I walked to keep up with Aaron and Regina.
"Let's stop and grab food at the cafeteria. I'm starving and we have time." Regina said grabbing both Aaron and I's wrists and dragging us in the opposite direction from the air conditions hallways.
No!
Food was the last thing I wanted right now. Just the thought of it made me sick. I wanted water, not salty cheese fries.
I watched the ground as we walked. The hallways were empty but Regina stopped us to look at one of the message boards.
"Janis, the theater performance is next week?"
"Yeah," I say without looking up. The world spun each time I moved my head. "Damian's got lead."
"Of course he does." Regina said.
She and Aaron continued talking but I didn't contribute to the conversation.
I guess I need water more then I realized.
The spots in my eyes covered my whole vision.
It went from a small headache to the end of the world real fast.
I couldn't tell if my eyes were opened or closed. It was all a grey swarm.
"I think I'm gonna pass out." I whispered.
Aaron and Regina didn't pay any mind.
"Guys." I spoke louder.
Was I even audible? No matter how loud I tried to speak it never came out in more than a mumble.
My legs felt heavy and weak at the same time. Like my knees would give at any second.
"Guys." I repeat myself.
I can't even hear Aaron and Regina talking over the buzz in my ear. My head felt heavy and I could feel every time it tipped in the slightest.
My vision was totally replaced by spots and I couldn't see anything.
My throat was so dry it felt like it was closing as I tried to speak.
I need water. Fuck. I need water.
-
"....anis."
I could see it again, but my brain wasn't processing. Aaron was in front of me. His mouth was moving but I don't know what he's saying.
I'm on the floor leaning against someone.
It's too hot for that.
I try and sit up but arms wrap around me, pulling me back down. I don't fight it as spots appear in my vision again.
A water bottle is handed to me.
I bring it to my lips without question.
My brain still isn't working.
The person behind me is slipping my jacket off my arms. I try and fight it.
My jacket is like my comfort blanket. I can't take it off. I can't-
"Janis, please."
Regina.
It was Regina.
I place the empty water bottle next to me and let my jacket get stripped off.
I never drink a full water bottle in one sitting.
Yet I still felt thirsty.
"You okay?" Aaron asks as I push myself out of Regina's lap. "You passed out for a second. You just crumpled. We were worried. You-"
"Aaron," Regina says sternly. "For god's sake she just passed out, let her breath."
"You need more water?" Aaron asked.
"Yeah." I say softly.
"I'll go swing by the cafeteria," Aaron says getting his bag and standing up.
"Look," Regina joked as Aaron turned the corner. "You broke him."
"Sorry."
"Don't be sorry," Regina says turning me so we're both leaning against the wall. "It's hot as fuck out. I'm not surprised it happened. You just get a little nervous when your friend just drops to the ground."
I nod. The ringing in my head had gone away but my mouth still felt dry. Regina held my jacket folded over her arms.
"You fell into me when you passed out." Regina laughed. "Almost took me down with you."
My face flushed with embarrassment. "Whoops."
There were footsteps as Aaron can back. "I bought three, I figured we all need water."
"Thanks, man." I say reaching into my bag to grab my wallet.
"No. No, it's fine." Aaron said pushing my hand away from my bag and tossing both Regina and I a bottle.
"You sure?" Regina asked.
"Yeah." Aaron nods. "Feel better Janis?"
I nod, slipping the water. It was ice cold and made me feel a lot better. I still felt nauseous and a bit dizzy, but not like I would pass out. "I don't think I trust myself to get up yet," I say, leaning against the wall.
"You'd feel better in the AC." Regina points out.
I nod but make no effort to get up. Regina reaches over and presses her cold waterbottle against my forehead.
"If I catch you wearing a jacket in a heatwave again you can catch my hands." She says, but she doesn't sound very threatening.
Aaron hums an agreement as the bell rings.
Students walk past us but nobody pays us much mind. Everyone wants to get to ac as soon as possible.
"We need to call Damian" Regina says.
"Or- oh I dunno....her mom" Aaron says, glaring up at Regina.
"Yeah we can do that too, but how the fuck is Janis gonna get home? Walk?"
"We should call her mom first. I know I'd wanna know if my kid passed out."
"You have a kid?" I laugh.
"This is a hypothetical situation," Aaron says.
"But this-" Regina points to me. "-isnt hypothtical. If Karen or Gretchen passed out, I'd wanna fucking know. They're my giants."
"Guys," I groan, looking up to the ceiling. "We can do both. Regina, you know my phone password, don't call my mom because she's at work but text her."
Aaron and Regina glare at each other momentarily without moving. I clear my throat and Regina breaks her gaze to reach for my phone. Aaron picks up his phone and begins dialing.
I can't hear the other line but it doesn't take long for Aaron to start talking.
"Hey, Damian. You think you can meet us at the tiny pick up? Regina, Janis, and I. Janis needs a ride home." He paused. "Yeah, she's fine now...she passed out- wait no- Damian she's fine. It wasn't like- No, dude. She-"
Regina and I laugh as Aaron tried to explain what happened.
"She just fell, she's fine now- no- shes oka- Damian!"
"Poor Aaron." Regina chuckled.
"Damian, Aaron rolled his eyes. "Do you want to talk to her?"
I lower my hand from my mouth where I was trying to hide my laughter as Aaron passed the phone.
"Janis?!"
"Hey, dude." I can't help but laugh. The panic Aaron had when I first passed out seemed tenfold from Damian over the line. "I'm tits, man. Just overheated a bit."
"Were you wearing your jacket?"
"I was."
"Janis!"
"Not anymore, I'm not!"
There's hushed speaking on the other line. "Cady says it's stupid of you."
"Tell Cady she's stupid."
"That would be a lie." Aaron points out. He can't hear Damian, he just decided his input was necessary. It wasn't.
"Met us at the pick-up zone, okay?" Damian asks.
"Yeah," I say. "Love you."
"Love you too."
The line clicks and I pass the phone back to Aaron. Regina is still texting on mine so I stand up to look ever her shoulder. My mom seems a lot more chill about it then Damian was. I told her not to wear a jacket. I don't even think she needs to leave school but just send her home and we can talk later. Glad she's okay.
"What does everyone have against my jacket?"
"It's hot as fuck, Janis." Regina deadpans.
Aaron takes my bag from me. "Let's go."
"I can carry my bag-" I try to protest.
"Nu-uh. Aaron, you hand Janis her bag back and I'll push you off the platform." Regina interrupts me.
I finish off my water as Aaron chuckles. "What's with you and pushing people from high places, Gina?"
Regina shrugged, my jacket still in her arms. "It's fun. Besides, you think one of us would really get hurt? With the people we're friends with?"
"True." I point out.
As we get closer to the tiny exist I can feel the ac already. Damian and Cady are already at the platform, Damian looking incredibly stressed. I throw up jazz hands the second he sees me.
"I'm all good!"
"Getting calls like that never fail to scare me," Damian says with a worried smile. "Glad you're okay."
Aaron hands me my bag and Regina draped my jacket over my shoulders as I walk over to Damian.
The first thing he does is lift the jacket off of me and glare at Regina who laughs, raising her hands in defense.
Damian scoops me up, letting me fall backward into his hand. I don't even bother to sit up as he pulls his hand close to his chest. The ceiling lights were bright, but I'd rather see that then grey spots.
"I'm gonna get this reckless girl home."
I can head Aaron and Regina faintly say goodbye over Cady's bye.
I prop myself up on my forearms as Damian begins walking. "What are we gonna do with you, Janis?" He asks.
I shrug forgetting he can't see. "I'm tired."
"Wouldn't be surprised silly."
He gets us both checked out at the office. Tinies passing out during a heatwave isn't an uncommon occurrence and I'm not even the first today. They don't question it and let us leave.
I already feel a lot better by the time Damian makes it to his car. Mom was right and I definitely could have stayed in school. But hey, an excuse for nap time is an excuse for nap time. Especially during a heatwave when I can lay in my bedroom with a fucking ac.
Fun fact, the first time I passed out I was at an airplane show during a heatwave. The blacktop made everything hotter than normal and it was like 110 degrees. I- like Janis, almost pulled my friend down with me. I don't remember half the shit after I passed out bc my brain was like- viewing everything but not processing it. What I do remember is downing three water bottles on the spot and being like- Holy Shit. Bc, i cant even drink half a water bottle in one sitting. Hey, we made it through another week! Because I am your friend and I love you and @diademchiofthetripod told me that all RenRuki fans deserve nice things, here is a short and sweet little fanfic about Renji proposing very badly. Please enjoy. I have included AO3 and ff.net links for those who enjoy leaving comments, or you can just read it under the cut like an animal.
Any Proposal You Can Walk Away From | AO3 | ff.net |
Summary: Renji pops the question a day early... or possibly 40 years late.
Rating: The AO3 version is T for cussing. The ff.net version is cuss-free.
Rukia usually took Renji up to the hill on the Thirteenth Division that overlooked the training grounds whenever they wanted to do some chill outdoor boozing. Tonight, though, she had gone to the trouble of staking claim on the other hill, the one that had a romantic view of Ugendou Pond. It was especially romantic tonight, with the moon bright and full, reflecting silver in the pond's surface. A bit of fall chill had crept into the air, just perfect for snuggling up close to someone else (assuming you were bothered by cold, which Rukia was not, although she was not above pretending when snuggles were at stake).
They weren't snuggled together though, or groping each other, or engaging in an extremely competitive match of tonsil futsal, as they usually did these days whenever that could find a spare moment and a place that offered even the most tenuous veneer of privacy.
Instead, they sat side-by-side, silent, gazing out at the ripples of the lake, a little bit unsure of what to say to each other. They had already blasted through two bottles of sake, and were paused in a foggy, peaceful haze. Rukia reached out, and started groping around without looking down. Renji thought she was getting ready to crack open the third bottle, but instead, her hand found his, and settled gently atop it, her sword-roughened fingertips brushing gently over his own scarred knuckles. He looked down at their hands for a moment, thinking about how much he liked the way they looked together. His gaze traveled upward, only to find that she had turned her head and was looking at him now, eyes shiny with drunken affection.
Renji wasn't sure his heart had ever felt so full.
"How are you feeling about tomorrow?" Rukia asked gently.
Renji rolled out some of the stiffness in his neck. "Fine. I'm sure it will go fine."
Rukia, who had never fallen for his bullshit, not even once, quirked a smile at him. "Oh, yeah? Gonna go home and get a restful, full night's sleep after this?"
With that, Renji tackled her, rolling through the grass until they both lay on their sides, faces so close that they could each tell how terribly the other smelled like booze. "Who cares?" Renji declared. I'm gonna sleep so good when I have you in my arms again every night."
"Yeah," Rukia agreed, "I'm the one who's gonna be up all night listening to you snoring."
Renji buried his face in the join of her neck and shoulder, nipping at her collarbone. "I am not the one who snores and also, that's not what's gonna be keeping you up all night."
"Mmm," Rukia agreed, threading her fingers into his hair. "I can tell by the way you are trying to distract me that you are not fine about tomorrow."
"Is it working?" Renji mumbled.
Rukia disentangled her fingers from his hair and bopped him on the head. "It's a big fucking deal, you dummy, it's okay to be nervous about it."
Renji pushed himself up onto one elbow. "I'm not nervous . Your nervous-ass brother made me practice with him all afternoon, I can do my lines in my sleep."
"Buuuuuut?"
Renji sighed. "It's stupid."
Rukia lifted her head up to kiss his nose. "So what? Stupid or not, I'm your best friend, tell me."
Renji smiled fondly at her. "You are my best friend, so I guess I gotta." He sighed. "I dunno, I've been thinking about this moment for a long time. A really long time, actually. And I had sort of a plan, y'know, and some stuff I was gonna say, except that now there's a script and a bunch of people I don't even know are gonna be there…" He trailed off. "It's fine. It'll be nice. We'll be all dressed up and I'm much less likely to make a bonehead of myself, and of course, your brother will be there, as he somehow manages to be at all the important moments in our relationship--"
"Renji."
"--and if we get real lucky, there could be some drama, one of the Gotous flippin' their shit and throwing a vase at me or something--"
"Renji!" Rukia tried again to cut him off, although she was having trouble not laughing. "I get it. So why not just do it, y'know, now?"
Renji stared at her. "You want me to propose to you right here? Right now?"
"Sure, why not?" She gestured around. “We got, like… the moon. The lake. Very romantic, thank you, Rukia, you’re welcome, Renji.”
Renji ignored this. "Why not? 'Cause I'm utterly pasted, f'r one, and f'r two, if I ask you now, what am s'posed to do tomorrow when it's time to ask your brother for your hand all formally and shit?"
F'r one," Rukia shot back, "I think we've made some of our best relationship decisions while sauced. And f'r two, you can ask me again, you moron. No one has to know you've already scandalously elicited a promise from me before formally petitioning my Honored Brother."
"Wow, you made that sound kinda hot. Okay, okay, you've convinced me. Let's do this. You better say yes, or it's gonna break my heart, okay?"
"I told you weeks ago I would say yes! Get on with it!"
With a great deal of grunting and groaning, Renji heaved himself to his feet. He swayed for a few moments until the world stopped spinning, and then glared down at Rukia, still stretched out languorously on her side.
"Would you mind at least sittin' up for this, your Majesty?" he grumbled.
Rukia stretched as she sat up. "Would you rather I stood? You're kinda far away. I'm not sure I can hear you from down here."
Renji rubbed the back of his neck. "Yeah, if you don't mind. That's always the way it was in my head."
"I don't mind," Rukia replied kindly, and held out her hands, wiggling her fingers, so he could help her to her feet.
Renji paused, a thoughtful expression on his face. He seemed to have become distracted by the pleasant sensation of holding her hands in his.
"Everything all right?" Rukia nudged.
"Ah, uh, yeah. I just realized that, well, I wrote this with a certain game plan in mind, and then it got boogered up, and I didn't really… I mean, I wasn't sure when… or even if I was ever gonna get to do this, and it seemed like bad luck to be updatin' it all the time and, well… it's kinda outta date."
"I am stupid drunk right now and I don't care," Rukia announced firmly. "Just hit me with it."
Renji nodded slowly, working himself up to it. "Okay. Okay. So, first of all imagine I'm dressed nice and I've just loaded you down with an inconveniently large bundle of flowers."
"Like your dress uniform?" Rukia asked hopefully. She was a great fan of Renji in his dress uniform.
"Oh, no, way shittier than that. We're talking back before I met Yumichika, I didn't have any taste then." He sucked his teeth. "Imagine I'm wearing something I borrowed from Kira."
"What, like, with your ankles and wrists hanging out?"
"Yes. Precisely." Gently, he placed her hands back at her sides before boldly putting his own on his hips and puffing out his chest. "Inuzuri Rukia!" he began.
"Oh, no," Rukia giggled.
"Inuzuri Rukia," Renji started again, furrowing his brows in mock crossness. "As of…" he thought for a moment, "Thirty-nine years and five months ago, I have passed the last of my exams, therefore completing the requirements for graduating with honors from Shin'oureijutsuin. Furthermore, I have been offered a position in the Fifth Division of the Gotei 13, under Captain Aizen Sousuke (I hear he's very nice.)"
Rukia clapped her hands over her mouth delightedly.
"I will be getting a salary of 50,000 kan per year," Renji continued, affecting a bit of nervousness. "It's not a lot, I know, and this dumb city is so expensive, but that doesn't count bounties for killing Hollows, and after a year, I'll be able to try for a seat, which pays a lot better."
"What do I care about your paycheck, you fool?" Rukia interrupted, her voice bristling with the defensive thorniness of her youth. "I'm gonna get a position in the Gotei, too, y'know. I can take care of myself."
Renji's eyes softened, and Rukia could tell it was real emotion, not just part of the act. "I know that. And it's not because you need it, it's just that I want to. The fact is, I've never had anything worth having before, but if I did, I would give it to you. All this work, I did it for you, Ru, because the only thing I want is to be able to give you the life you deserve." He took a deep breath and screwed up his face like he was about to do a terrible job casting a kidou. "I love you more than anything, Inuzuri Rukia, and I'm asking you if you'll marry me." Renji stood there for a moment, blinking, as if surprised that he had managed to get it out. Belatedly, he dropped to one knee and smiled hopefully at her. "Don't forget, you promised to say 'yes'," he muttered out of the side of his mouth.
Rukia rubbed her chin. "So, in this scenario, as envisioned, had you already told me at some point that you loved me? Or am I getting this all at once?"
"Oh, no," Renji clarified. "No lead-up. Going in cold. This is for the whole ball of wax, here."
"Ah, I see," Rukia grinned. "Well, on one hand, Abarai Renji, that proposal would probably work on the Rukia it was intended for. She would have beaten you about the head and shoulders before accepting, of course, but the fact is, you had her at 'an inconveniently large bundle of flowers.' "
Renji regarded her suspiciously. "Buuuuut…?"
"Buuuuuut," Rukia continued, "I'm an Acting Captain, now, partner. You're pretty cute, but I need someone who's going to be able to keep up with me."
"Well," Renji hedged. "Like I said, it's a little out of date. You wanna hear some of my more recent achievements? Would that help?"
"It's worth a try," Rukia shrugged.
Renji pondered. "I did eventually get promoted to Sixteen Seat."
"Okay…" Rukia drew out. "Was that better or worse than that weenie Kira?"
"Ah, he was Seventeenth at the time!"
"And my archnemesis, Hinamori Momo?" Ruki raised an eyebrow.
Rukia and Momo had recently struck up an affected and extremely melodramatic rivalry. Renji was personally in favor of this, felt it did both of them good, very much enjoyed listening to Momo attempting to trashtalk the most foul-mouthed woman he knew, and did not, under any circumstances, want to be caught within 100 spirit miles of it. His eyes darted to the side nervously. "Er, uh… moving right along, when I transferred to the Eleventh, I made Twelfth Seat right away, much less prejudice against people who are balls at kidou over at the Eleventh."
"Did that entail a raise? Rukia asked archly.
"It did not," Renji replied, "The Eleventh pays garbage. But! I did get used to withstanding nauseating maelstroms of reiatsu without getting nosebleeds (very handy for hanging out with you) and also I learned the secrets of growing just really killer sideburns."
Rukia nodded along. "I am not gonna lie, I am way horny for your sideburns."
"Does that mean you'll marry me?" Renji asked hopefully. He wiggled his knee around a bit. "Gettin' kinda uncomfortable down here."
"Eh, you might want to switch knees. The thing is, I also have this brother…
"Yeah?"
"Yeah. And mostly, his opinions are bad, just like, the worst opinions you've ever heard, but I do care that he likes the person I marry."
"Okay," Renji agreed amiably. "I'm very likeable, y'know. What kinda stuff is he into? Sunglasses? Futsal? Siiidebuuurns?"
Rukia pursed her lips. "Mmm… more like… poetry? Reciting the provenance of furniture he owns? Lecturing people? Orchids, of course, but who doesn't?"
"What about…" Renji paused for dramatic effect, "devotion to Squad Six, excruciating attention to detail with regards to Gotei paperwork, and bankai?"
"You know, you really could've led with 'bankai' when I asked you to list your accomplishments."
Renji raised his eyebrows hopefully. "Is that a yes?"
"It's a yes to the question of does my brother love all those things. To be honest, you're very close on the other yes, almost there, but there's one more thing." Rukia rifled around in her sleeve and pulled out her phone.
"Rukia, may I remind you that it's eleven at night and also, you are stupid drunk?"
Rukia flapped her hand at him. "No, no, it's cool. It's probably daytime in the World of the Living."
"The time difference is nonlinear, you have no idea what ti--"
"Oi, Kurosaki! It’s Kuchiki Rukia. I need to talk to Inoue, but she doesn't have a spirit phone! Can you, like, call her on your pathetic human phone and hold your two phones up next to each other so that-- oh? Oh, she is? Yes, that would be great! Thank yoooouu, Ichigoooooo!" Rukia covered the mouthpiece with one hand. "Apparently, she's right there. Wait, why is she right there?" She removed her hand again. "Orihime! Hi! Yes, I'm great! Yes, also drunk! Look, I need to ask you something! Mm-hmm. Right. Look, you remember Abarai, right?" She leered at him.
Renji frowned back, offended.
"Yeah, yeah. Anyway, he's over here asking me to marry him, d'you think I should?"
A very loud, very high pitched noise came out of the phone's speaker, followed by a rapid stream of excited talking.
"Mm-hmm," Rukia would agree from time to time. "True, true."
"Be a pal and help a guy out!" Renji shouted, hoping Orihime could hear him. "I'll let y'ride on my bankai next time you're in town!"
Rukia scowled. "You fool," she hissed. "Orihime is incorruptible."
The words "-- ride on Zabimaru!! " very clearly echoed out of Rukia's phone.
Renji waggled his eyebrows triumphantly.
Rukia listened for several minutes more, and finally said, "Okay. Okay, I will. Look, do me a solid, will you, 'Hime? It's not official until tomorrow, y'know, Kuchiki bullshit and all, so don't tell anyone yet, okay? Nope, not even Ichigo. He can think what he likes, just deny everything. I'll see if I can scam some daypasses and we'll come visit this weekend, okay? Tell everyone all official-like? Yup, love you, too, thanks for the advice!" Rukia flipped her phone shut. "Well," she said firmly.
"Yee-essss?" Renji sighed, raising his eyebrows hopefully.
"Apparently the most perfect person in all planes of existence thinks you are 'the best' and says if that if I turn you down, I am a 'huge dumbo.'"
"Ouch," Renji sympathized.
Rukia took a step closer to him, and took his face in her hands. "Fortunately, there is no danger of that. Yes. Yes, I will marry you, Abarai Renji, because you are the best and I love you with all of my heart. I don't care how many bankais you have or which squad you're in and I would marry you even if we had to move back to Inuzuri and get good at stealing water again."
Renji jumped to his feet, scooping Rukia into his arms on the way by. “No backsies,” he murmured before kissing her soundly.
“No backsies,” she agreed, ruffling his hair. “Feel better now? Was it everything you hoped and dreamed?”
“It went so good,” he grinned. “Wow, that went so much better than it ever went in my head.”
“I am suddenly no longer comforted by your confidence in tomorrow,” Rukia replied dryly.
“Tomorrow’s gonna go great,” Renji assured her. “I mean, what’s the worst that can happen? We cause a huge rift in the most powerful family in Soul Society? My Third Seat, who derives all of his power from petty spite, discovers his bankai? The rest of us go to bankai, we destroy a bunch of buildings, get banished from the Seireitei? We have to teach your brother how to survive on the outskirts of the Rukon?” He pressed his nose against hers. “Who cares? You just said ‘no backsies’, what else could possibly matter?”
“You’re the worst,” Rukia mumbled, having lost interest in everything that wasn’t kissing him.
“And now you’re stuck with me,” he confirmed, and gave her what she wanted.

“A lot has been happening... hasn’t it...?”
“What have you heard, Jim...?”
Mr. Mackie cleared his throat, glancing from Matt to his handcuffs. This was the first time Matt had come to visit him in a week, and he very clearly knew something was up.
“A lot of the other guys have been talking... the details are always mixed up, from second hand sources and stuff...” He gulped, ignoring the feeling of Matt’s eye’s behind those tinted glasses, and how they seemed to burn into him as he spoke. “But... they think they caught the person they were so afraid of...”
Matt tried his best to feign confusion.
“Do you think that means it’s safe to talk to the sergeant? Tell them what you know while the others are busy?”
Mr. Mackie quickly shook his head, clearly uncomfortable with the idea. “If I say anything, they’ll know I snitched.”
“Detective Mahoney is a friend, he’s trustworthy. If you take this to him he’ll make sure you’re protected.” Matt assured his client. “The sooner you tell him what you know, the safer you’ll be... I can’t do much if you’re behind bars like this, refusing to confess.”
Mr. Mackie only stayed quiet.
Matt sighed softly before standing, grabbing his cane from the table. “At least think about it... I just want to help you.”
“You really think Mr. Mackie is going to spill the beans to Brett?”
“If he feels safe enough, yes,” Matt grunted, struggling to steady his phone between his shoulder and his ear as he hauled his groceries up his building’s stairs. “I tried giving him some space, with any luck he’ll feel safe enough to ask for Brett.”
Foggy sighed over the phone, “And if he doesn’t?”
“Then he’ll need more convincing... I just hope for our sake he does it sooner rather than later.” Matt said, stopping just outside the door to his apartment.
Foggy went quiet for a moment. When he finally spoke up, Matt could hear the hesitation in his voice. “You mean for her sake...”
Matt bit his lip, leaning against the door. “Yeah... Yeah, I mean for her sake.”
Another pause.
“Where exactly are you keeping her...?”
“Somewhere safe,” Matt promised, “But I can’t keep this up for long, she needs real doctors, people who know what they're doing...”
“You’re sure you can’t just take her to a hospital?” Foggy asked. Something told Matt he already knew the answer to his own question.
“No... not until these people are gone.” Matt’s tone was stern, but Foggy could still sense just how tired he was. The desperation he felt to catch these people.
The two exchanged their goodbyes, and once Matt hung up he set down the grocery bags and pocketed his phone. He pulled a blindfold from his pocket once he knew no one was around and tied it over his eyes.
He opened the door to his apartment, picked up the groceries, and stepped inside.
Matt navigated through the kitchen with ease, putting away the meat and vegetables he had purchased along with the beer he knew he’d be needing at the end of the night. All he left out was a box of chicken stock, which he began preparing once everything was put in its proper place.
He served the broth and made his way towards the bedroom, stopping just outside the door and knocking, hoping for a response. After waiting a moment and hearing nothing, he went inside.
(Y/n) lay in his bed, just as still as the night he had brought her into the safety of his home. Her eyes were vacant as she stared at the ceiling, she wore the same clothes from the night she was taken; Matt hadn’t felt comfortable with changing her clothes.
Matt sat beside her and brushed her hair out of her eyes, sighing softly when she didn’t so much as twitch. He set the bowl on the nightstand and carefully moved her so she was slightly sitting up.
He began to carefully feed her the broth, listening closely to make sure she wouldn’t choke on it.
“I think I have a new lead...” he piped up. He paused, listening for anything, a shift in her breathing or a spike in her heart rate. But there was nothing.
“I’m going to try and get as much information out of him as I can... Maybe even get him to a police station.” Matt explained, taking the water bottle from beside the bed and carefully giving her small sips of water.
“I know you wanted to go about this differently... Kill Blum and be done with it... But I can bring him to justice the right way, I just need more time...” He received no response again, this frustrated him.
Matt set the empty bowl aside and took a hairbrush from his nightstand. He had some trouble taking the knots out of her matted hair, but brushed through them as gently as possible. He retrieved a warm, wet towel from the bathroom and cleaned her face and arms with it, doing what little he could to take care of her.
Once the sun set, he laid her back in bed and left to change into his suit, which had been relocated to the living room. Once in his Daredevil suit, he returned to the bedroom one last time to check on (Y/n).
He sighed deeply, noticing no change, and made his way to the window. The bedside lamp began to flicker, the sound of the electricity wavering catching his attention.
Matt turned back to her, only to turn the lamp off.
Catching the lab technician was easy. The area around the last of the warehouses he had yet to infiltrate was surrounded by plenty of dark allies anyone could get lost in.
The tricky part was getting him far away enough to where none of his companions could hear him scream.
Daredevil pulled the sac from the man’s head, listening as he frantically studied his surroundings. He suddenly turned back to Daredevil, screaming as his captor inched closer to him.
“We’re going to make this nice and simple for you...” he began, reaching up and gripping at the chains keeping the man poised above the ground, “You’re going to tell me everything you know about the girl...”
His eyebrows knitted together in confusion. “G-Girl? What girl?” he whimpered, struggling against the chains.
Daredevil delivered a hard punch to the gut, the technician would have keeled over had he not been restrained.
“Play dumb with me again and see what happens... You know exactly which girl I’m talking about.” he murmured. He gripped the man’s chin roughly and forced his head up to look at him. “Start talking...”
The man began to weigh his options, and while the wheels turned in his head, Daredevil flicked on the voice recorder he had hidden behind his back.
“S-She showed up a couple years ago... she was just a kid, know? Young, nosy...” he began, cautiously looking at the man beside him.
“Started sticking her nose in places it shouldn’t have been, huh?” Daredevil prompted him to continue.
The tech nodded, “She had this cheap camera, she was taking lots of pictures out at the docks-”
“And what did she see?” Daredevil interrupted.
He hesitated. Matt already knew what she saw, the people being taken from the docks in those black vans. But he needed the tech to say it himself.
“Bodies... lots of bodies...”
The helmet helped mask Matt’s surprise, he kept his composer as his source continued. “This was before we really knew what to do with them... ship would bring us new people, and would take the dead ones away.”
“What did you need the fresh meat for? What were you doing with them?” Daredevil took hold of the chains and tightened them around the tech’s wrists, causing him to scream and whimper in pain.
“W-we were testing something!”
“Testing what? Talk, dammit!”
“We were getting commissioned, I dunno by who, but they wanted powered people on their payroll!” he shouted, causing Matt to stop and loosen the chains, dropping the man to the floor.
“Blum was given a set budget... but he blew through almost half so quickly, he was desperate... then the kid showed up...” he wheezed, trying to squirm away while he could.
Daredevil grabbed him by the lapels of his coat and began to drag him to the edge of the building. “It’s a long way down, tell me about the experiments quick, or you’re gonna find out just how high up we are.”
He gripped the Devil’s wrists tightly, hoping it would be enough to keep him falling should he decide to let go. “We developed a serum, highly degenerative in it’s early stages! That’s why there were so many bodies for the kid to find! We were at stage 5 of testing when she showed up!”
“And you thought some college student was going to be your missing link?” he growled, pushing him closer to the edge.
“N-No no! I swear, I told Blum not to do it! But Blum was mad, he’s the one who got her on that table!” he screamed, scrambling to grab more of Daredevil’s red suit. “We didn’t realize the stage 5 serum was picky about genetic codes, little things like that we had no control over! Blum just wanted to kill her, make it hurt! We didn’t know the kid was the right fit!”
Daredevil hoisted the man up and threw him back onto the roof. He took the chains from the post they still hung from and began to tie up his prisoner. At that point, he decided to turn off the recorder. This next part would be just for him.
“And the girl...? What happened with her?” He asked, pressing his foot to the man’s chest.
“She was catatonic... for three months...” he wheezed, squeezing his eyes shut. “Then... Then one day I went to run some tests on her, and she was gone...”
Matt felt his heart drop. Three months? She was going to be stuck like that for three months?
“I have no idea where she could have gone now... Ms. Jackson, my supervisor... she used stage 3 serum on her... that and the electricity should have melted her brain...” he sobbed, the disbelief evident in his voice.
Matt swallowed the lump in his throat and hoisted the man onto his feet. “That’s probably what you said last time... and she still woke up... just hope this time she won't come looking for you, I might just let her get her hands on you.”
He dumped the man at the door of the 15th precinct, and left the tape recorder resting on his chest. Matt didn’t leave until he knew the tech had been brought inside, the tape listened to, and the tech put behind bars.
With that kind of evidence, the police would have to investigate the company asap. Blum would be arrested, and it would be safe enough to take (Y/n) to a hospital.
This sense of victory had him returning to his apartment all too relaxed. He was an idiot to think that would last long.
Once he got close enough to his apartment, he could hear someone in his bedroom with (Y/n). The electricity in his whole building was going haywire, even the fucking billboard outside his window was fluctuating like crazy.
He broke into an all out sprint to get to his place, diving in through the window and smashing through it without a care in the world.
The intruder, who had been pressing a pillow to (Y/n)’s face, didn’t bother moving. He probably thought he’d be able to get the job done in time before Daredevil could get up.
Matt took hold of the intruder and threw him off the bed and away from (Y/n). Before he could even try to check for a pulse, the intruder got up and grabbed him from behind.
Matt tried his best to usher the man out of the bedroom and away from (Y/n) during their fistfight. But he was privy to this, and stayed in the room as best as he could.
Daredevil had the upper hand until the intruder took hold of the bedside lamp and smashed it against his head. This sent Matt stumbling backwards, gripping his head in an attempt to steady himself.
For a split second, he tried listening for (Y/n)’s heartbeat. Everything felt like it was in slow motion as he continued to fight the man in his bedroom. He didn’t remember throwing him through the wall and into the living room. All he remembered was the sound of her heart growing faint.
Matt dashed for the bed and cupped (Y/n)’s face, murmuring for her to wake up. He made a move to start pounding on her chest, but the forgotten intruder grabbed him and continued their fight.
Daredevil screamed, begged for (Y/n) to try and wake up, ignoring the part of his brain that told him yelling would do no good.
His attention was brought back to the intruder as he earned a kick to his gut, sending Matt onto his knees and struggling to catch his breath.
The attacker made a move to kick him again, but froze in place.
The sound of bare feet stumbling against the floor sent a chill down both their spines.
(Y/n) slowly staggered out of the room, gripping the door frame to keep herself steady while she stared down her would-be killer. She lifted him, slamming him against the ceiling, then back down onto the floor.
Matt heard her fall to the floor as she pushed herself off the door frame. He wanted to make a move to help her, but instead stayed in place as she crawled towards her attacker.
She slowly straddled the man, ignoring his cries of pain as she gripped the sides of his head in her hands.
“You’re going to forget...” she whispered.
Matt flinched at the screams that followed. He thanked God once they died down, and breathed a sigh of relief once he heard the intruder’s heartbeat.
(Y/n) flopped off of him, her breathing labored. “Red...” she began, watching him kneel beside her and hold her hand. “Get rid of him...”
Matt slowly nodded, stood up, and lifted the man in his arms before leaving out the fire escape.
(Y/n) was awake, but Blum knew to send his men to Matt Murdock’s apartment. They would be coming back soon. But this time, Daredevil would be ready.

DATE & TIME: December 20, afternoon
LOCATION: The Little Flower Shop
TAGGING: Noah Puckerman @thepuckrmn
NOTES: The boy needed a hug, okay?
Puck cursed softly to himself as he walked down the sidewalk. With everything that was going on, he completely forgot that Hanukkah was right around the corner. He usually bought Sarah a couple of things for the first night, and he knew she needed a distraction now more than ever. He spotted the flower shop up ahead and decided to duck in there to see if he could find her anything nice. Puck rolled his eyes at the stares he got from the people on the street. His unkept hair, dark circles under his eyes, scabbed up knuckles, and the fact that he probably still smelled like whiskey all pointed to the fact that he was in mid-spiral. He entered the store and was immediately overwhelmed by all of the variety of flowers in front of him. He was never really a flower buying guy to be honest. Looking around, he spotted someone who looked like they worked their and approached them. “Hey. This is gonna sound dumb. Do you guys have any Hanukkah-y flowers? Or like I dunno. What do you get your pregnant sister that says ‘the kids will be cool’ and ‘Happy Hanukkah’ at the same time?” Puck asked before they even had the chance to turn around. His eyes widened once he realized who he was talking to. “Oh. Shit. Hey. I didn’t know you worked here.”
With her last day of work upon her, Madison was shuffling about trying get all the ducks in a row for her absence. Keeping an organized store and office helped, but it was the end of the year, five days til Christmas, things were a little nuts. Truthfully, she was avoiding customer interactions as much as possible, the staff more than plentiful to handle the needs, but when Puck approached she knew she couldn't not attend to a friend, especially when said friend looked so rough. "Hey, yourself," she greeted in return, pausing to wonder if she should press about his appearance, but figured they could get the business out of the way to start. "We've got some Hanukkah arrangements made, if you want the baby factor in there, we'd probably have to make some adjustments." She'd put in for extra when Hunter had ordered his flowers for the holiday. The Berrys and Puckermans were no small part of the town, nor were they the only Jewish families around. "I can show you?"
He nodded at her suggestion and ran a hand through his hair to try and attempt to calm down whatever was going on up there. “I guess let me look at the Hanukkah arrangements first and then we’ll go from there. I can’t tell if she’s super pumped about the babies so I don’t wanna push it, you know?” he replied before following her to the mentioned arrangements. Puck glanced down at her pregnant belly for a moment before smiling softly up at her. “You look good. You getting excited?” He had learned from Quinn that no pregnant woman actually wanted her belly touched or her size commented on. His scabbed hand reached out to inspect one of the Hanukkah arrangements in front of him. “Flowers are so weird. It’s like…here’s this pretty living thing…watch it slowly die on your coffee table…it means I care.” Chuckling, he shook his head. “I know I’m not making any sense. I also don’t know which one of these looks best so I’ll trust whatever you say.”
"Babies?" she echoed, prying gently as she led him a few steps away. It was a small corner that wasn't decked in reds and greens, but she liked to think they'd covered something for every budget all the same. At his question, Madison smiled at him and nodded. "Yeah, we're a week or so from the due date. I'm getting really anxious to meet him," Madison told him, her eyes following the movement of his hand, pausing to examine the blemishes. Something was definitely not right. Or hadn't been right? "You okay?" she finally asked, pausing briefly enough to make it clear it was a genuine question, but not lingering long enough on it to force him. "Trusting a sales person is only gonna get you the biggest, most expensive one, you know?"
He nodded at her prying. “Twins. Gonna be a double full uncle in 5 months,” he replied, “I happy for you guys. I mean Ben is a complete idiot…but he’s an alright dad. I’m sure the little one is gonna be awesome.” Puck noticed her checking out his fucked up knuckles. He stuck his hands in his pockets and shrugged at her question. “Yea…I’m fine. Everything is gucci,” he said unconvincingly. Clearing his throat, he turned to face the arrangements next to him. “I’ll spend whatever. I don’t really care.” And it was the truth. It was hard for him to actually care about anything right now.
Madison's eyes grew a little in surprise. She knew the stressful feeling of anticipating one baby when she wasn't sure how to feel yet. Imagining it was two? "Congrats? If you're excited about it. If not... sorry? or good luck? Luck probably either way," she reasoned, then chuckled, "I honestly can't even argue with him being an idiot. But thanks." Gucci Her eyes rolled as she sighed. "I keep telling you gucci isn't a thing. It's a brand. You don't have to talk about it. But you don't have to lie about it either. Fine doesn't have busted knuckles," she told him gently. She picked up one of the vases, "get this one. It's big enough to be noticed, but not take up too much space. It won't take much maintenance because being a nurse is enough work without everything else she has going on. And, with your friends and family discount, you won't be too broke for the other seven nights of Hanukkah."
He shrugged at her reply. “I don’t actually know how I feel yet. Still in a little bit of shock. She’s the smart one in the family. So I definitely wasn’t expecting this. Ask me again closer to her due date.” Puck rolled his eyes right back at her. “If it’s in Urban Dictionary then it’s definitely a thing. You’re just not cool enough to get it,” he shot back, ignoring the second half of her comment. Nodding at her suggestion, he reached out to take the vase into his own hands for a closer look. As he turned it, his eyes couldn’t help but land on his bruised knuckles. Puck sighed and dropped his gaze to the floor. “…I saw my dad,” he said simply. He wasn’t sure how much she knew about Papa Puckerman, but assumed that being involved with Ben meant she knew at least some of their dysfunctional family history. “It didn’t end well….obviously.”
"Fair enough. If you need uncle practice in the meantime, he might only be a half-nephew, but the excessive and rugged handsomeness will surely make him ignore that detail," she teased, though the offer was sincere. She'd never tried to force the family bond too hard. Puck and Ben weren't exactly close as brothers, but she'd never turn away family if they wanted to be there. "There's a lot of things in Urban Dictionary that shouldn't be used. And Gucci is on that list," Madison insisted. She was quiet when he spoke again, imagining a few different scenarios for what exactly seeing the man meant. Puck looked rough, but he didn't look like he'd taken any punches. She rested a hand on his forearm, tentatively giving him a gentle squeeze in some form of silent support. Maybe he'd continue, maybe he'd take interest in the flowers again, but either way, she wanted him to know she was there.
“Excessive and rugged handsomeness is a very very important part of being an uncle,” he smirked back. “We’ll see though. I don’t think me and Ben in the same room is a good idea…especially if you want family photos that don’t involve him rocking the Rocky Balboa look.” He looked down at her hand on his arm. He knew she wanted to make sure he was okay and he knew she knew that he was not okay. But he couldn’t tell her everything. Not when she was so close to Ben. Sighing, he put the vase down on the shelf. “He hurt someone I care about. So I hurt him. I paid him off and told him to leave town and never come back. Which means I bough us about two months of Papa Puckerman free life…until he runs out of money and comes back to ruin someone else’s life.”
"Fortunately Gabe and I can roam free of Ben from time to time. If you want," she told him, still not really understanding the entirety of that situation. But that could wait, couldn't it? Keeping them separated kept conflict at bay and that was enough for now. "And that's the vicious cycle?" Madison asked curiously. It would be a lie to say she didn't have curiosities about the infamous man, for gossip's sake alone, but even more because her son came from that. "Do you feel any better having done all of that? Knowing he's gone, even if temporarily?"
“You sure? Because I’m pretty sure you’re literally stuck with Ben until that kid turns 18.” Puck shrugged at her follow up questions. “That’s the vicious cycle. Dad needs money. He shows up. Causes a bunch of shit. I pay him to leave and to not contact ma. He leaves for a bit. Then always finds his way back. Usually most people at least know OF him by now to avoid him at all costs. Wasn’t the case this time.” He crossed his arms over his chest and shook his head. “Does it look like I feel any better? I don’t think he’s actually gone. He’s just laying low. There are too many Puckermans in this place for him to completely disappear. You know…Ben is kinda lucky. I wish dad knocked up ma and just fucking left her. Having a dad for eight years just to have him up and leave is worse than never having a dad at all,” he commented bitterly. “By the way, Peyton and I have torpedoed so if you wanna go make out in the back room I’m down,” he added, trying to lighten up the conversation.
"Doesn't mean we have to be together twenty-four seven," she pointed out. Puck wasn't wrong, he didn't look good. But she hadn't seen him for days either, so this could, in fact, be better than he'd been. "If you stopped giving him money, would he keep coming back?" Madison challenged carefully. "Ignore him and he'll go away is such elementary bullshit advice, but if he can't get what he's coming for..." It probably wasn't her place to be offering advice, she knew. "For whatever it's worth, I'm sorry you went through all of that, then and now. You don't deserve to have people like that around you." She swatted at his arm then and shook her head defiantly. "What is it with Puckermans and wanting to make out in the backroom?" she teased, "besides, we've gone through the many reasons why it could never happen."
“If I stop giving him money he’ll ask my mom. Or Sarah. Or reach out to anyone with his last name. I’d rather deal with it myself. Maybe me actually hitting him this time will change something. But I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.” Puck shrugged and dropped his arms to his side. “You never hooked up at work? I’ve hooked up at work a bunch of times. The first time Peyton and I hooked up was at the studio. I think it’s the risk of being caught and getting paid while you’re fucking,” he explained with a smirk, “hey I held up my half of the deal. Just waiting for you.” He picked up the vase she suggested. “I think I’ll go with this one. Thank you, McCarthy…for everything.”
Madison nodded along with his reasoning. On some level she could relate to the need to be the protector, even if her circumstances were far from relatable. She would hope it worked the way he wanted it to. What else could she do? "Oh, no, I hooked up at work," she admitted, gesturing to the whole of her belly. "Maybe that's my aversion to it." She only shook her head at his insistence, but that was the game they played anymore, wasn't it? "C'mere," she said in a brief warning, before tucking into his side and squeezing a hug around him. "Wash your hair before you see Sarah, okay? And brush your teeth, with toothpaste, instead of Jack," she recommended, and while her tone was light, her face made it clear it was serious business. "Door's always open, Puck."
Puck dropped his gaze to her belly and raised an eyebrow. “Well shit. Nice work, Madison.” Her warning didn’t give him enough time to dodge the affection. He awkwardly placed his arm around her and patted her shoulder slightly. “I hate hugs…” he muttered, but let it happen. He let go and reached into his wallet to pull out the appropriate amount of cash. “But if Ke$ha brushes her teeth with a bottle of Jack why can’t I,” he joked as he handed her the money. Tucking the vase under his arm, he leaned down and pressed a kiss to her cheek. “I’ll catch you around, beautiful.” Smirking, he turned around to leave the store.

jaehyun x reader
librarian! au
genre: fluff
words: 1.7k
warnings: realistic portrayals of college life lol
ive said before that im being self indulgent with posts
but this is really it
im really out here writing this
lets get into this mess
so youre studying right
and you yourself do not have a laptop of your own
bc welcome to being a broke college kid im calling myself out
so you decide that youre gonna go to the library on campus bc sis,, cash in on the tuition money ok
so you go and youre like wow hahahaha i dont have a library card better sign up for one
so you go to the desk and theres no one there
just your luck really
you decide to wander around a little to see if theres anyone who can help you
and low and behold you stumble across someone
this young man knelt down by a shelf with a book rack next to him just humming softly and organizing books
and you catch his attention by clearing your throat slightly
he looks up and his eyes are big over the rims of his wire framed glasses that are clinging to the tip of his round button nose
and his hair is a little mussed from being bent down
but holy hell
youve read enough novels to know that this must be exactly what the characters are talking about when they say things like ‘love at first sight’
“sorry” he says as he standcs and brushes himself off “can i help you with anything?”
starstruck really
you manage to stutter out something about needing to register for a library card and he smiles so kindly it makes u want to melt
“sure!’ he says, motioning for you to follow him back up to the desk
is this what a trance feels like???
he asks you a few basic questions, like your name, your age, and what building your dorm is in so he can put it all on your new nifty library card
and then he turns around this lil webcam on top of his computer and asks you to stand in front of it and smile
and you do, awkwardly
and as hes looking down at the computer counting “3, 2, 1” he has this smile on his face like hes trying to hide it
and if that didnt make ur heart jump you dont know what ever would holy
so he prints off your card as youre still trying to recover from being in the presence of an angel
and he hands it to you and smiles
“library hours are 8 am to 12 am every day, but on the weekends i’m the one that closes. which means if you ever need some extra time to finish that essay you pushed off,,, i wont tell anyone”
aND HE W I NK S
and not lot a hot wink
but a cute?? wink??? if thats possible
like you have a secret with him now and its safe
you wonder absently as you stare down at the black and white picture of yourself on the back of your new card if he tells everyone about him closing on the weekends
and if he doesnt does that make you special???/
you smile and thank him again, maybe a little more confidently than before and head for the door
you realise as youre halfway out that you came here to study on the computers but you really need some time to sit down and process the fact that you just say an actual angel
you can do your math homework on your phone for one more night if it means you can turn down your body heat from screaming blushing mess to slightly embarrassed rosy cheeks
the next time you get a chance to run by the library on campus, it just so happens to be sunday
you catch yourself wondering if dream boy meant friday and saturday or saturday and sunday when he said weekends
thats not important right now
what is important is that you have actual business to do in the library today
and that business is to pick up hamlet for your english class
you check in and someone else is at the front desk
you try not to let yourself feel disappointed
i mean you met him once for christs sake
the guy at the front is equally as attractive as dream boy from the previous week, but a little more relaxed to talk to since he isnt giving you any flirty subtones
the kid is all business really
he tells you that his name is doyoung if you need anything else
you ask how he got the job there, out of curiousity
because really, both of the librarians youve encountered seem pretty young for the standard librarian stereotype
doyoung explains that its a work-study job, so nearly all the people that work there are students at the university and work in between classes or on their off days to make some extra cash or pay off some tuition
and you can get behind that!!
so doyoung is cool and you decide you can go to him to ask questions instead
because while dream boy is a dream boy with pretty cheekbones and nice lips and a smooth voice and a good sense of style and a great height without insoles and looks great with glasses and has the most captivating eyes
hes a lil distracting lol
anyway you find yourself in the shakespearean section
and you grab a hamlet off the shelf and head back up to the front to have doyoung check the book out to you
and as hes handing you the book back you get a classroom notification saying that, despite common belief, the book rental wasnt due by tomorrow, but the whole book reading is due by tomorrow
you wonder how the fuck professors get away with shit like this and then you remember that you didnt bother to read the syllabus so you cant really get too mad at anyone but yourself
so you find a table that looks like it has the comfiest chairs and cozy up for a long evening of reading and annotating
(depending on who you are you either love or hate hamlet, either way it is exhausting to annotate anything from that man so bear with me ok)
five hours later and ⅔ of the annotations later it is 11:56pm
and you havent noticed
you hadnt noticed much of anything happening in the real world after you popped in a headphone and started reading about guards seeing a ghost
that is until someone plops down in the seat in front of you and asks
“so what are you studying”
and you look up, a little delayed because youre finishing a notation
only to find that its dream boy
and your brain blanks for a sec bc wow every time you see him its kinda like?? ouch???? my heart bro
so you just kind of shake your head and mutter some “im not really sure anymore”
and theres some truth to that!! first there were ghosts and now theres dead girlfriends dads and dead girlfriends and talking about a skull in a graveyard
that play is really a wild ride brother
and dream boy sits there and laughs, wholesomely
you could die happy
“yeah i get that” he says, rubbing the back of his neck
theres a pause that carries on a bit too long
“wanna hear a dumb joke?” he asks suddenly
you smile then, partially out of exhaustion and partially because wow?? cutie
“sure” you say
“okay. what do you call a nervous javelin thrower?”
you pause for a sec bc wtf
“dunno. what do you call them?”
he flashes this cute fucking grin that you know is supposed to be slick but just comes off as wholesome and says
“shakespeare”
and you shouldve seen that coming wow
and its so dumb that you actually??? giggle????? and that turns into a laugh??
youre probably just exhausted from annotations but maybe that was actually funny
and his smile softens like hes made progress on something
“y/n, right? i dont think i ever actually introduced myself. i’m jaehyun”
he smiles and reaches across the tabe and you take his hand
its warm and strong and you try not to think about it too hard
“well, y/n, library loses here in another two minutes or so.”
he sees the look on your face fall
“but never fear!” he leans forward and lowers his voice
you hold your breath
“i told ya you could stay, didnt i?”
his smile is closed lipped and cute and genuine
before you can say anything hes up and ushering the last few people out of the library, telling them good night and good luck with their classes tomorrow
youre kind of caught in a brain dead daze after finally being pulled from your studying to watching this cute librarian named jaehyun bustle around and lock doors and turn off lights
and when he finally gets back to you he clicks on the lamp on the table youre working at and sets a cup of coffee in front of you
he mustve made it as you were falling asleep with your eyes open
you thank him copiously before asking
“i thought you let everyone stay after hours when you closed”
he looks up over the rim of his mug with a surprised look in his eyes
he shakes his head as swallows the clearly too hot coffee
“not at all. most of the time i kick them out and study by myself.”
he blushes like its a confession and it makes you feel,,,, something
but you dont want to press
so you just reach out and offer your other headphone to him because if you dont know what to say then you can both enjoy some good study music
so he pulls out his homework for the night and the two of you sit there and study
you sip off your coffee occasionally and both of you nod your heads to the music playing in your ears
he hums along to the ones he knows and a thought skips across your mind
you could get used to this
(theres a 100000% chance there will be a part two to this)

In a Moment
Drabble idea by @atfubblegum. If you have a fubblegum drabble idea, I’d love to hear it.
“What would you define a ‘moment of weakness’ as, Finn?”
That question had caught him off guard.
Here he was, staring at a simulated sunset that seemed ageless, sitting next to one of his best friends, when she suddenly asked him a strange question. He turned to her, her focus still on the virtual sun, expecting clarification but receiving none as she sat silently.
“What do you mean by that?” he asked.
She tilted her head upward in thought, “Well, it’s not exactly a well defined concept, but I...”
She turns to face him, her posture leaning back and the virtual sun illuminating half of her face.
“I’d like to know what you think it means,” she says to him, “You are a hero, my knight, my champion, so what does it mean to you?”
Finn and Princess Bubblegum had spent the past half hour or so simply enjoying each other’s company, touring through the Candy Kingdom castle halls, indulging themselves in the secret gardens and labs and resident pet giant cat named Timmy. It was all fun and games until it came upon them the introspection and reflection of their lives and, consequently, their friendship.
Princess Bubblegum had gone through some major changes in the past month, the weight of which was greater than the past hundred years she had been alive for. Her confrontation with Flame Princess had forced her to reexamine her methods and her trust issues, finally coming to face the centuries of paranoia and tyranny she had installed in her brain for the sake of protecting her people. She had always told herself it was worth it, a means to an end, but after eight hundred years of self sacrifice, she wasn’t so sure anymore.
But it hardly compared to the tribulations Finn was going through. He could’ve talked about anything, from breaking up with Flame Princess, the death of Billy, losing an arm, his crippling depression, but he chose to offload his father issues to her. She wasn’t fond of the idea of Finn accepting his father’s denial of his role as a parent, but Timmy the cat had quashed any potential conversation on that subject.
All had slowed to a gentle stillness now. Timmy had retired to his undersized cat bed, they were exhausted from walking around so much, and they had returned to the secret virtual reality room to unwind.
Finn was on his back, staring at the candy stone ceiling, mulling over her question, trying to find an answer that would satisfy her, as well as himself.
“A moment of weakness is...” he started, but trailed off as his words failed him, “I dunno, doing something bad?”
The princess hummed, “It’s not like surrendering yourself to the intrusive suggestions you lock away in your thoughts and immorally acting despite yourself?”
Finn tilted his head, “Huh?”
She turned to lock eyes with him, “Giving in to evil.”
“Oh,” he looked away back to the ceiling, “No, I wouldn’t know what that’s like.”
He heard the princess huff, “No, you do.”
He straightened himself up and leaned up slightly off of the treadmill they were sitting on, “Wait, what do you mean?”
Princess Bubblegum leaned forward as a futile means of distancing herself from Finn, “Remember how you and Flame Princess broke up?”
Finn reflexively looked away, “Uh, yeah.”
“That was your moment of weakness,” she explained, Finn looking back to her, the princess staring into the virtual sun, “You defied common sense and tricked two people into fighting each other for your own amusement.”
He leaned back onto the floor, unable to look at the princess as she recounted his shameful memory.
“That’s not just wrong, Finn,” she looks over to him, seeing him more focused on the ceiling than listening to her. It was the expected response, she knew, “It was evil.”
“I said I was sorry,” he muttered just loud enough to be heard, a hint of defiance in his tone.
“And I understand that,” she said, placing an assuring hand on his knee, “And I’m not saying that makes you evil, it was a moment of weakness for you.”
Finn patted his stomach and wiggled his feet, as if he was physically processing her words. He tightened his lips and flexed his cheeks, unsure of how he was supposed to respond.
“Well, how about,” he leans up slightly to look at her, “What was your moment of weakness?”
She sighs in frustration, the feeling of which was aimed not at him but herself, “You can’t even begin to fathom how many of those I have had.”
There was a pause, a moment of processing the magnitude of the many years she had been alive for and the countless things she had done for her kingdom, before Finn responded, “How about something recent?”
She leaned back, supporting herself with her skinny arms, head craned in thought, “How about...” she started, looking above the setting virtual sun, “That time Ice King infected the Candy Kingdom with his freezer burn, and I had you and Jake take him hostage?”
It was years ago, but Finn remembered it clearly, particularly because it was the first instance of many that he realized the princess was capable of doing wrong, in contrast to the perfect image she and his mind had painted her in.
“Yeah, you wanted us to beat up an innocent old man,” he simplified, resting his head back on the floor, “Yeah, I get’cha. ‘Cuz, like, it didn’t matter if he got hurt, as long as your peeps were okay, right?”
“But it was still wrong and you knew it,” Bubblegum had taken to leaning and laying down beside him, staring at the ceiling as well, “It didn’t matter if he deserved it, or if he even knew what he did. It was below me to treat him as such, but I thought saving my people justified the means.”
Finn patted his chest to quell the distraction of the ensuing silence, remembering how he had told the princess of her wrongdoing, even after seeing for himself the horrifying disease the Ice King had unleashed onto her people. It was pitiful and deplorable but, most importantly, it could be cured, and the princess was prepared to extract it through any means necessary.
But even he had to put his foot down, unable to bring himself to mistreat the Ice King so, and he made sure she knew all about it. It surprised him, however, that she knew what she was doing was wrong, that she would be reviled for it afterwards, and if it weren’t for Finn, who knows where that path would’ve led her to?
“You’ve changed a lot since then,” Finn brought himself to comment.
He felt her hand on his shoulder, “So have you.”
Finn chuckled a bit forcefully despite himself, looking over to see the princess’s soft, understanding face.
“So, I guess,” he fiddled with his words as Bubblegum retracted her hand, “A moment of weakness would be, like, being too weak to stop yourself from doing something bad.”
“That’s a flawed definition, contextually speaking,” she brought up, turning to face the ceiling again, “Because, like, what if I eat one cupcake too many, even though I’m on a diet?”
“Wouldn’t that still be bad?” Finn asked, looking back up, “I mean, not following your diet is bad for you.”
She giggled, “Okay, that was a dumb example, but you know what I mean,” she leaned up until she was on her side, arm propping up her head as she faced him, “A moment of weakness by definition isn’t exclusive to morality.”
“Not even a little?” he speaks up, leaning slightly to face her, “I mean, if you do the opposite of the right thing, and you can’t stop yourself, isn’t that rooted in moral basis leaning on the bad side of the scale?”
The princess smiled. She couldn’t help but find his poor string of words endearing and admired the fact that he was trying to make sense with them.
“Okay, you have a point,” she turned to lay on her back again, “The magnitude of morality widens the further down the spectrum you go, and the same goes for succumbing to moments of weakness, I suppose.”
“That should be true of the opposite, right?”
“Huh?” she turned to face him, watching him lean upwards until he was sitting straight.
“You know, the opposite of a moment of weakness?” he asked with a gesture of a hand.
“Like...a moment of strength?” she asked, slowly lifting herself up.
“Yeah. What is a moment of strength?” he asked, looking at his two hands as if they were the plates of a scale, “Is it just being strong for a moment, or something deeper?”
Princess Bubblegum had righted herself and had taken to mulling over the philosophy of the principal of morality.
“If the opposite of a moment of weakness follows a polarized definition word for word,” she said, almost muttering to herself, “Then yeah, a moment of strength is the acting of the best interest despite yourself.”
“Like fighting a strong monster trying to save some peeps,” Finn pointed out, feeling brief pride at his professional definition, “Even though it might be too strong for you.”
“Or shutting down your entire security system,” she said nonchalantly, looking back up to the virtual sunset they had been neglecting.
“Yeah, something like that,” Finn tapped his fingers on his knees, finding the courage to say to her, “Why d’you ask?”
“Huh?” she had been snapped out of her train of thought as she looked to Finn.
“Why’d you get all metaphorical on me, Peebs?” he had taken to subconsciously patting his legs with his hands, “I mean, philosophylis, I mean, soul searchy?”
Princess Bubblegum couldn’t help but giggle, brushing aside her hair over her shoulder, “Well, I thought about having a moment of weakness right now.”
“Say what now?” he looked to her, finding that she had scooted a bit too close.
“You know, acting despite myself in this very moment,” she briefly looked away, “But, I suppose if I’m aware of it, would choosing to act on it be a moment of strength instead?”
Finn had two whole years to get over this feeling. He had quashed it time and time again whenever he looked at her, thought about her, cementing the respect he had for her as a close friend. And yet, something in him decided that she would look so enchanting if there was a strong breeze to swat at her hair as the virtual sun was setting.
Finn had fought himself from acting on the suggestions intruding on his mind, a moment of weakness.
But in a moment of strength, he disregarded those childish notions and acted on his own.
“It depends...” he said calmly, quietly as he inched a little closer, “Is it a good thought or a bad thought?”
Bubblegum turned to face him, surprised but pleased that he was so close to her now.
“I don’t know...but I wanna find out,” she said, staring into his eyes as her own widened.
Their hands moved into each other as they closed in.
Finn and Bubblegum were surprised to come back to the slumber party with half of the invited guests having been chucked into a pit of bath water that was definitely NOT there before they left. The candy people were rescued, their bodies dried off, and order was restored before everyone had to be tucked in for the night.
“You guys were gone for a while,” Jake said to Finn as they unfurled their sleeping bags, “What were you two doing?”
“We were just hangin’ out, man,” Finn answered, climbing into his bag.
“You didn’t do anything, did’ya?” Jake said skeptically, his face baring an expression of wile.
“Nah, man. We just had a moment, that’s it,” he zipped up his bag.
“What kind of moment? You can tell me, bro,” the dog nudged him with his long arms.
Finn giggled, then said with a happy breath, “A moment of strength.”

Sans Serif
( Introducing a Swap alternate with a Grump from @aglitchandagrump )
Charm - [aglitchandagrump]-01/22/2017
Charm poofed in, gathering his bearings as he slowly recognized the area. The warmth of the air felt nice. He let out a small sigh, walking over to the steaming water. It couldn't hurt to just take a dip, right? He took off his jacket and shirt, slipping his pants off to -- he hated the feeling of wet clothes clinging to his bones -- before untying his sneakers and laying them to the side under a tree. He dipped his toes in, feeling the warmth, before stepping in and sinking down. This was.. nice. He sunk down, the water coming up to his neck as he leaned his head against the ground.
Serif [SecondQuill]-01/22/2017
Serif stepped through a portal, several feet off the ground, above the water. She landed rather ungracefully and was instantly soaked from head to toe. At least it was warm spring water.
Charm - [aglitchandagrump]-01/22/2017
Sans was a little less than embarrassed to say at the sudden arrival of the other he let out a high-pitched-almost-soprano-like scream. His head bolted up from it's resting position only to slam back down as the combination of the water pushing and pulling against him and his shock caused him to practically do a backwards summersault out of the pool. So he was there, having landed on his face and now supporting himself with his hands and knees, bone-naked, shaking like a wet dog, and staring wide eyes at the water. "What. The. Hell." That was all he could feebly manage out.
Serif [SecondQuill]-01/22/2017
Serif emerged from the water annoyed as hell. Of course she'd step through the wrong place. That ALWAYS happened when she came here. She looked down at her soaking wet clothes in dismay before she noticed the other. As soon as she saw him a bright blue blush appeared and she quickly covered her face with her hands. She'd only seen enough to recognize that it was an alternate of hers. "s-sorry! i-i didn't see anything i s-swear!" Not that it actually mattered considering that they were skeletons and didn't really have a real reason to wear clothes in the first place.
Charm - [aglitchandagrump]-01/22/2017
Wait a second was that "Swap?" He asked, his expression of shock turning to confusion. He sounded... different. And the magic aura was also different. Very slightly. But different. Not to mention he has seen him naked before and he is a skeleton but that was a completely different battle. The only things he was self-conscience about was his scars and ribs and both weren't visibly in his current position, anyway.
Serif [SecondQuill]-01/22/2017
Serif kept her face covered. Looks like they knew her. Was that Charmy? Wait...She sounded different. This was a guy alternate. And not another Swap otherwise he'd use the nickname she used around them. So...this must be an alternate that another Swap knew. Dangit! She should have payed attention when opening the portal here. "u-uhhh i-i....um...." Should she play along? "y-yeah! h-haha! s-sorry for dropping in like that!"
Charm - [aglitchandagrump]-01/22/2017
"...You're lying." It was a Swap but obviously not his Swap. "Either that or you are just way too embarrassed about seeing me like this." He pushed himself back, sitting in a more comfortable position on the grass. He wrapped his arms around his top most ribs, making sure to keep his scars covered as he looked at the other. He gave himself a second to analyze the feeling of magic in the area. Yeah. This definetly not his Swap. "You sound different and your magic's different. So drop the act."
Serif [SecondQuill]-01/22/2017
Serif sunk a little deeper in the water at being caught. Still keeping her face covered for 'modesty' sake. She decided to keep denying. "w-what are you t-talking about? i-i just d-didn't know it was y-you! anyway i-it's not l-like i wanna see you naked! a-and how do y-you know my magic's different? i-i could just be having...uh...magic fluctuations! a-and that's why my voice is different!" Yes. Good lies. He'll totally fall for it!
Charm - [aglitchandagrump]-01/22/2017
"...Considering I was on the recieving end of a lot of his magic, I think i have a pretty good idea of what his magic aura is supposed to feel like. 'Flucutaions' or not. And that shouldn't effect your voice but that is a whole other rant about souls and their magics that I'm not gonna get into." He sighs, getting up and grabbing his jacket, putting it on and covering his legs with it. "I have something on now, you can go ahead and look at me."
Serif [SecondQuill]-01/22/2017
Serif sunk further into the water. Yeah looks like he wasn't falling for it. When he said she could look she hesitated for a long moment, her blush just getting brighter from the whole situation. Finally she lowered her hands, holding them at level to see just his face to check his expression in case he was lying ( she didn't know why he would be alternates could be weird sometimes) finally she lowered her hands but couldn't bring herself to actually look at him. Instead looking down at the water. "um....yeah...y-you're right. i'm...not swap...er. not yours...i guess you can call me serif? and...you're charm right? us swaps don't really like alternates so i'm guessing if you know one of us well then you...should be...a charm?...s-sorry is this making any sense? i've never met another charm before."
Charm - [aglitchandagrump]-01/22/2017
Charm can't help but smile a small bit at the reaction, stifling a small chuckle when she began talking. He raised an eyebrow, his arms curling around his knees as he rested his skull in them. "Serif, huh? Okay, easy enough to remember. Yeah, I'm a Charm and you're making plenty of sense." He tilted his head curiously at her. "Mind me asking what kind of alternate you are?"
Serif [SecondQuill]-01/22/2017
Serif relaxed a bit when Charm understood her. He reminded her of her own Charm and she couldn't help but feel a little comfortable around him. Even so the blue faded only slightly from her face. At the question she looked confused. "what kind of alternate am i? what do you mean? that's a pretty vague question." She thought for a moment. "unless you mean what obvious differences there are. seeing as how i don't know which swap is yours I can't say for sure. but one thing that's different is that my charm is a girl. everyone is sorta swapped in my corner of the multiverse. arial is a guy, euphie is a guy, hawke- uh...wrenne is a guy. so i guess I could say i'm a gender swapped alternate?"
Charm - [aglitchandagrump]-01/22/2017
"..So you're a girl. That explains your voice." He hadn't actually realized there was a little pocket of the multiverse like that. He probably could have guessed but, hey, the more you know. "So... Do you randomly just go dropping out of portals into pools of water or was I just the lucky soul who got to witness the once in a lifetime scene?"
Serif [SecondQuill]-01/22/2017
She nodded in confirmation that she was indeed a girl. Her blush got worse at his comment on her dramatic fall. Her expression shifting to a pout as she stood up, stomped to the shore, and flopped down. "well i dunno! how about you ask your swap? does he drop out of portals into bodies of water?...probably yes. b-but in my defense I didn't mean to come here anyway! I was going to my own version of the island." Her soul glowed for a moment and she tapped the ribs above it as if testing a mic. "connection must be faulty today." She took off her bandanna began to wring it out. "I'd go back now but I'd probably run into my charm and she'd tease me about getting soaked."
Charm - [aglitchandagrump]-01/22/2017
When she mentioned her Charm he couldn't help but let out a small, loud, sudden spurt of laughter which he quickly stifled with his hand as he regained his composure. His smile was a bit wider and more playful. "Sorry, that just.. Yeah, that sounds like something I'd do to Swap." His hand fell back curling around his legs, his smile getting a bit lazier as he looked over at Serif. "What'dya mean by 'connection?'"
Serif [SecondQuill]-01/22/2017
Serif was surprised by the laughter. Seeing him so happy she couldn't help a smile of her own. It was like those wonderful moments when she got her own Charm to laugh. At the explanation she started to piece together who this guy's Swap was. But she still wasn't sure. "connection? oh! I mean my connection to the multiverse! it's how I make portals. and how most of the others make em too. we all found a way to link our souls to the multiverse in a way...it's confusing. anyway, it's pretty useful! doubt I'd be able to travel without it. it does have some negative side effects though, it makes the nightmares a lot worse...i can hardly sleep because every time I close my eyes I'm in another swap's place and every time that swap dies...." She stared into space for a long moment as a few memories rose that she'd rather not remember. "a-anyways! seems that all the swaps connected have the same nightmares. even yours. I've been doing a little study on it with the others but we haven't gotten too far. especially with times and red's dumb rivalry to be the 'best swap.' we all know that if anyone has a chance to be the 'best swap' it's probably tiny. he's the only one that hasn't done what we've done. although from the looks of it he might not become a swap at all. he might just stay as a ‘science.’ then i'd say clover or fluffle would be the best swap's." She paused for a moment trying to remember what they were talking about. Her blush grew when she realized just how off topic she was getting. "A-ANYWAY, CONNECTION. SOUL. SOMETIMES IT FREAKS OUT AND SENDS US PLACES WE DON'T WANT. OR WON'T OPEN PORTALS AT ALL." She wanted to dive back in the water and hide.
Charm - [aglitchandagrump]-01/22/2017
He listened as she actually explained what he had asked before going off on a whole other tangent. His lazy, curious smile grew into more of amusement. This was honestly kind of... cute? Was that the right word? He waited a few more moments after she stopped talking, just to make sure she was finished before chuckling a bit, the laughter making his whole body shake a bit. There was more of a difference between Serif and Swap then just gender, apparently. Charm's head was no longer lying on his knees, his mood going from half-curiosity-half-politeness to actual interest. When his laughter died down he wore a soft, genuine smile; his thoughts of her -- cuteness and all -- betrayed a small bit by how he looked at her. "That's interesting. I'll have to help you guys study it. Having an off-hand assistant can't hurt, right?" He paused before adding: "Plus, if all the other Swap's are as interestingly eccentric as you are I would love to meet 'em."
Serif [SecondQuill]-01/22/2017
Serif was again surprised by his laughter. It didn't seem to hold any mocking tones. She was confused by it but seeing him happy cheered her up instantly. Her eyelights shifting to stars at his suggestion. She seemed clueless to the meaning in his look. "I'D LOVE TO STUDY WITH YOU! I'M SURE THE GUYS WOULDN'T MIND! THEY ALL LIKE CHARMS AND ONE AS * CHARMING* AS YOU WOULD BE A BIG HIT!" She paused for a moment her expression turning to a pout. "eccentric?! what's that suppose to mean! I'm not eccentric! I'm....I'm...." She couldn't think of a word. "....maybe I am eccentric." That wasn't really a bad thing after all, and he did say 'interestingly eccentric.' She shrugged. "anyway I think you'd like the guys! tiny is a bit of a jurk and lavender is a little bit controlling at times. that's not really his fault though. seb is nice though! he's actually been hoping to meet a charm for a while now! after times came in and started chatting about his. oh yeah, times is...a bit of a weirdo. most of the others say we are alike but I just don't see it. he's so moody and a total drama king! you might like him though. he really cares about his charm. calls him prince just like I call my charm princess! some of the others do that but none of them talk about their charm more than times...just between you and me, i think he's totally gay for the guy."
Charm - [aglitchandagrump]-01/22/2017
As soon as Serif started talking about this "Times" he made the connections. He could barely control himself, holding in his laughter as he got progressively bluer waiting for her to stop talking before bursting again. He ended up falling over, looking like a little ball on the ground as he let out a some wheezes of laughter. It took a good three minutes, maybe more, for him to calm down enough to actually speak. "O-Oh my.. Oh my god.. Oh my god that's so..." Aaaaand he loses it again for another few minutes before finally pulling himself together nad pushing himself up, a few tear streaks down his skull and his cheekbones decorated with a bright blue streak going across his nasal cavity. He wipes away at the tears. "Can I get you to write that down for me? Because oh my gosh that's great. By the way, I'm pretty sure 'Times' is my Swap." He overdramatically gestures to himself. "I'm the charming Prince he apparently talks so much about. Probably claims to be my 'knight?'"
Serif [SecondQuill]-01/22/2017
Serif didn't know what was so funny, a moments thought connected that she must have described someone that sounded like his Swap. Apparently he had good humor about it! Serif found herself laughing along with him, mostly just because of how hilarious he looked. Her laugh regressed to little snorting giggles as she waited for him to calm down. Her expression turned to wonder at his introduction. "he does! gosh i've heard so much about you! some I didn't really want to know- but still you surely are someone to talk non stop about! truly a charming prince to behold!" She hopped to her feet and did a low bow. "your highness, it is a honor to meet you! I would be more than happy to write that down for you to tease your loyal knight!" She broke into laughter and flopped back on the ground again.
Charm - [aglitchandagrump]-01/22/2017
He rubbed at his eye sockets a bit more, his skull getting a bit bluer at her actions and words. "Please do! I can add it to the growing list of things to tease him about." he pauses for a moment, his next words holding pure curiosity and maybe a tint of awe. "I wonder why Swap has never told me about you... Or any of the other Swap's for that matter. You're a lot of fun."
Serif [SecondQuill]-01/22/2017
"well it's sorta part of our rule of not interfering with certain worlds. most of us are happy with how our worlds are and are a little afraid that introducing another swap could...mess things up. we aren't the most uh..." She tried to think of the word before just shrugging. "we're assholes. just like I'm helping you annoy times, he could go and help my charm annoy me. we all like to cause trouble but we also know that could start an all out war between us. so we just sorta agreed not to talk about the group or go to eachother's worlds." She smiled mischievously "buuut I'm not in times' world so i think I'm fine! plus we didn't make it a promise so it's totally okay to bend the rules a bit. anyway, clover and fluffle meet all the time and have their families hang out."
Charm - [aglitchandagrump]-01/22/2017
"I'm guessing you chose your names? So, by that logic, there was a Swap that willingly calls himself 'Fluffle.' That in itself makes it totally worth it to tell others." he joked, leaning back a bit. "But I can understand why you do that. I have been refusing to interact with my close alternates for the same reason."
Serif [SecondQuill]-01/22/2017
She chuckled. "yeah, fluffle is a pretty goofy name. from what I heard his wife picked it for him and he just went along with it. won't stop us from teasing him though!" She set her now, slightly dryer bandanna to the side and started trying to get the water out of her gloves. "alternates can be a little weird but sometimes they can be nice. I met some of my charm's alternates. I bet times has met some of yours too, our worlds seem to run in pretty much the same path so I wouldn't be surprised."
Charm - [aglitchandagrump]-01/22/2017
"To be honest, I really kinda hope he hasn't." his smile fell a bit, returning a moment later albeit nervous. "N-Not that anything is wrong with close alternates, I'm just not totally fond of mine.." Especially that swapped fate one. He hated him. He quickly shook that away, though, returning his attention to Serif. "A-Anyway, there is an alternate where Swap is married? I mean, I guess there was bound to be one but it's still a bit odd almost. Who's he married to? Euphie?" He joked more then he actually meant it. He was still fully aware of his friend's crush.
Serif [SecondQuill]-01/22/2017
She decided to drop the Charm alternate thing. She understood perfectly. Sure she got along with the group well enough, but there were some alternates that she despised, out of jealousy or hatred for what they became. Some of them didn't have the best intentions... She shook away the thought. "yeah! clover is married to euphie! they have a daughter named springmarch. and fluffle is married to his jan and he has a daughter and a new born son. they're always talking about them and bragging. it's kinda annoying. although they are also very supportive of other swaps that like their euphie or jan. clover has been trying to get times to confess to his euphie for months now. and fluffle is excited that tiny is still dating his jan." She paused as she realized that he probably didn't know who Jan was. "o-oh! um...and jan is a rabbit monster from our snowdins. most of us use to date him- er...I guess "her" in some worlds."
Charm - [aglitchandagrump]-01/22/2017
"So little ol' Swappy has actually had a girlfriend before~ colored me impressed." his tone was mischievous. He half wondered if there was a gay alternate of Swap that was dating his Charm. He wouldn't be surprised but it would still be hilarious to see. "Well that's good for him. I'll remember to go to him if I can ever score a date with someone." He chuckled a bit as if it were a joke. Who would ever want to to out with him? Not to mention his only actual romantic interest was the fucking queen. Yeah. He was gonna die alone.
Serif [SecondQuill]-01/22/2017
She felt like she should be offended that he was so surprised Times had a girlfriend. After all they were close alternates. She didn't take it personally though, she knew her own Charm would act the same if she ever found out that she'd had a boyfriend before. "or you could come to me for advice! you'd probably get less teasing and more actual advice." She chuckled, she knew her alternate could be a bit of a ditz when it came to romance...then again so could she. "i'm sure you'll find someone wonderful someday!....or you could settle for times. still pretty sure he's gay for you." She winked jokingly. She suspected that Times and Charm had a similar relationship to her and her Charm. Like family almost but also not. She'd never been able to quite describe it. But she knew she'd give her life for her princess, and was sure he'd give his for his prince.
Charm - [aglitchandagrump]-01/22/2017
That got more laughter out of him, his small blush growing a bit bigger. He really liked this alternate of Swap. He would have to make a note to try and find her universe. It couldn't be that hard -- just some minor code searching on the UTM should do it nicely. "He does like snuggling me, and flirts with me a lot." He gave a small shrug. "He is probably totally gay for me and just doesn't realize yet." He let out a few more chuckles before smiling, once again, brightly at her. "And maybe I'll take you up on that offer. You'll probably give better advice anyways."
Serif [SecondQuill]-01/22/2017
"can't blame him for wanting to snuggle with you. if you're anything like my charm I bet you're super nice to snuggle." She paused for a moment and thought. "joking aside, he really does care about you. and if he's anything like me, he'd do whatever it took to keep you safe. he might be a pain sometimes but...he really wants to be your knight. it's not just some joke to him." She fiddled with the fabric of her shirt nervously.
Charm - [aglitchandagrump]-01/22/2017
Charm's smile fell and he sank into his jacket. "Yeah. I know. But he doesn't need to." I don't want him to. was what he meant. The last thing he wanted was for Swap to get caught up in his own problems. "He doesn't need to worry so much about me." I don't deserve it. "N-Not that I don't appreciate it but people like me, we aren't princes who have knights and get happy endings. We get the short end of the stick and learn to live with it. It's just how things are." Welp, it seemed he was the one who talked too much this time. He sunk down more, his blush deepening. "U-Uh, sorry! Just ignore me! I don't mean it." Liar.
Serif [SecondQuill]-01/22/2017
Serif stared at him for a long moment, his words made her heart sink. She prayed that that wasn't how her own Charm felt but guessed that it was. "....why....why can't you have a happy ending? can't a pauper become a prince?...you aren't stuck in one place. things change. you deserve a happy ending." She gripped the wet fabric of her shirt tighter as she spoke with earnest. "your story doesn't have to be like this! you can change your story! i did! times did! why can't you?" She froze, realizing that she might have overstepped her bounds. She was surprise how open she was being with this alternate, saying things she wished she could say to her own Charm but was too afraid to...She wouldn't take her words back though, she meant them.
Charm - [aglitchandagrump]-01/22/2017
He had hoped she would drop it but he should have know she wouldn't. This was a Swap, after all. Idiot. What could he even say without revealing too much? Why did he feel the need to respond to her at all? He technically didn't know her -- only what she possibly was. He wasn't obligated to answer her. Yet, he felt like he should. He sunk farther into his jacket, letting the hood begin to cover him. His arms also sunk into the jacket, moving to wrap around his scars on his ribs. Even though he was covered he felt very, very exposed. When he finally spoke it was quiet and hushed. "I just can't. It's complicated. I just.. can't." So many ways he could explain it without having to lie and without being cryptic and yet he just couldn't do it. Not even with the alternate of the person who he arguably saw as his best friend. Coward. Worthless. Idiot. He growled a bit, letting out a low protest at that damned thrumming voice.
Serif [SecondQuill]-01/22/2017
Serif sighed and thought for a moment. "it's okay if you don't want to tell me. it's not really my place to know anyway." She loosened her grip on her shirt. "I still think you'd make a wonderful prince. i hope one day you'll see yourself as such." She took a deep breath before speaking again. "i'm sorry. I didn't mean to upset you. i'd give you a hug but i'm still soaking at the moment." She awkwardly tapped her index fingers together.
Charm - [aglitchandagrump]-01/22/2017
Sans shrunk more, the annoying and repetitive insults still echoing in his soul and skull. He growled a bit more as they grew louder, only to have them abruptly stop when she spoke again. His eyes snapped up to look at her, her words slowly processing as he got even bluer remembering he was mostly naked still with nothing more then a jacket covering him. It wouldn't be so bad if this was his Swap. But this was a girl Swap. Sans lived with a human girl and that was bad enough. "It's fine," he mumbled, "a-and, uh, I mean I kinda am too." He tried to chuckle, it coming out not nearly as disarming as he would have hoped.
Serif [SecondQuill]-01/22/2017
Serif tried her best to smile in an attempt to brighten the mood. "uh...do you have a phone? if so I can give you my number so you can call me and stuff. w-we can plot against times some more and uh...text each other puns at ungodly hours."
Charm - [aglitchandagrump]-01/22/2017
Sans wore a little tired smile at her suggestion, nodding a bit. "S-Sure. I'd like that." It was nice to have someone to text in the middle of the night. He strung his arms back through the sleeves and fumbled for his phone, once again remembering he was mostly naked. "Sh-shit." He cursed as his blush returned.
Serif [SecondQuill]-01/22/2017
Serif pulled a notebook and pencil from her inventory and wrote her number down. She tore away a strip of paper to give him and re-stashed her book. She paused at his curse, looking up with a pout. "language. what's-" ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh yeaaaah. Her face turned blue again and she quickly looked away. Covering her face with one hand, she offered him the piece of paper with the other. "h-here ya go!"
Charm - [aglitchandagrump]-01/22/2017
His face just got bluer as she obviously realized. He was suddenly regretting his decision. He took the paper as he attempted to half crawl over to his clothes. There was a grunt, and oof, and a yelp before Sans had all his clothes back on -- bandages and all. "U-Uh, it's okay to look now." He said sheepishly as he was tying his shoes.
Serif [SecondQuill]-01/22/2017
Serif was a ball of embarrassment. And even after he said it was okay she didn't actually move her hand to look. "i-isn't it kinda s-silly for us to be embarrassed? i-i mean we're both j-just skeletons a-and alternates even! w-we look practically identical! n-nothing that we h-haven't seen before...right?" Her face just got bluer at how much she was talking. She really was a mess. She did the first thing that came to mind, she stood up, walked over to the springs, and face planted in the water.
Charm - [aglitchandagrump]-01/22/2017
He chuckled a bit. "Y-Yeah, I guess it is but it's just a natural instinct right-" he cut off as his little embarrassed, nervous smile was replaced with one of dumbfoundment at what she just did. "Uh.." It took him a few moments to snap out of his shock and actually walk over to the water. "Serif?"
Serif [SecondQuill]-01/22/2017
It wasn't that deep in that area so she basically just laid there under the water for about 30 seconds before resurfacing. "JUST CHECKIN OUT THE WATER HAHAHA! NICE AND WARM! SURE IS NICE! MAN I WISH THERE WERE HOT SPRINGS BACK HOME! WELL THERE KINDA ARE BUT THEY AREN'T THIS NICE! HEY SANSCHARMPERSON WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE QUESTION TO ASK PEOPLE?" This wasn't helping.
Charm - [aglitchandagrump]-01/22/2017
He couldn't help but laugh some more at how she was acting. He sat down near the edge, an eyebrow raised at her and her question of questions. "I dunno. I guess if it's someone who knows about the multiverse it's fun to ask what their favorite universe is."He was humoring her. Plus... it was kinda cute.
Serif [SecondQuill]-01/22/2017
"OUTERTALE!" She blurted. "WHAT'S YOURS?" She felt so dumb right now
Charm - [aglitchandagrump]-01/22/2017
"Other than my own? I would have to say Outertale, too." he gave a little playful wink, chuckling some more.
( This is all we got for this, sorry- More fluff coming soon- )
