Just watched another one of Laura Kampf's videos and now I need to do a deep dive on why you can use coffee to bring out the colour variation of Damascus* steel. Is there a job where I can just research cool chemistry for pay? I so badly need to know why this works. What reactions are happening? Why coffee?

#*im calling it damascus steel because thats what modern makers call this varigated steel they produce using two kinds of metal #i dont think thats how actual original Damascus steel was created but i havent dug into it so perhaps im wrong #but afaik this is like the modern equivalent cause we dont have the exact original recipe #maybe i need to update my knowledge on the subject #but the question remains - how the fuck can you use coffee to stain steel #i came across one comment blaming the tannins but ive only done and extremely cursory search so who knows #fuck i love chemistry #wish i was smarter #august talking
