"cancel culture affects minorities more permanently than it does anyone else" is a great point, but then you (a white person) talk about hating bts. i'm really curious to your opinion on bts specifically- not their stans, but them. with their antiblackness, there's one member in the group, rm, who did the most with antiblackness around 2013, but since then apologized alot and seems to have grown. fans use his apologies to absolve the whole group, while others completely ignore his (cont)
“cont) apologies and remorse. like you said, "cancel culture is based on the idea that people cannot change, which is untrue. so shit gets dragged up from peoples past that they have actually atoned for." this is something people often say about rm- that he atoned but still gets dragged for it, primarily by white americans in fandom culture who see them as evil. so do you think rm's apologies count for anything? what do you think? surely it's more nuanced than bts as a whole being irredeemable”
i’m gonna be honest i don’t keep up with bts cause i haven’t been into koop since like middle school? early high school? so idk much about bts at all, nor do i hate them specifically. or at all really. im ambivalent at best. i’m not up to date on what any of them are currently doing, im aware of their checkered past wrt racism and cultural appropriation, but honestly i’m not a fan to begin with so. whether or not they’ve apologized doesn’t affect my day to day life or interactions with my community, and so it’s not something i’m aware of or care to look into.
in my tags i was more commenting on the culture of people excusing celebrities actions because of stan culture (not limited to kpop), and i used bts as an example cause theyre one of the groups that is often at the forefront of that discussion and are the first ones that came to mind when i was writing those tags. there are plenty of other groups and celebrities who have done similar things and may or may not have apologized. from what i’ve seen, the same people you have calling for the cancellation of certain celebrities based on out of context scenarios, minor infractions, or deeds long since apologized and atoned for, are also the same people who turn around and say “but my fave would never” and turn a blind eye because they like that persons music/movies/youtube show/podcast/art/etc.
the tags truly were not about bts specifically, they’re a convient example in this instance. i literally don’t spend more than a single braincell thinking about bts or what they and their fans are doing and saying on a day to day basis, so i honestly can’t comment on what they’ve done. they were just an example in my tags cause they were the first ones that came to mind while i was waiting for my shower to heat up. maybe they’re redeemable? maybe they’re not? I am, as you said, a white american, who does not listen to kpop at all, and so truly i am not the authority on this group or any other.
#ask sharkie#i appreciate the effort you put into this esp cause its the first ask ive gotten in maybe almost a year#and im sorry to disappoint but i truly cannot speak to their politics because i do not have enough information to actually do so#tbh im not even sure how many people are in bts or what rm’s role is#it was more a comment on cancel culture and the fans/stans/haters than on the celebrities themselves#celebrities fuck up all the time but the ones who are held accountable are more often people that society wants to cancel in the first place#again not saying these people did nothing wrong but:#look how quickly pwr btm got completely canceled over assault allegations#but robin thicke and justin bieber are still out here making music#all three have Fucked Up on equal footing. but the two who didnt get cancelled are the cishet white dudes.#also like#yeah man im not into kpop. i truly dont have the energy to devote to reading up on whats going on in this world.#im in grad school i just moved and i work a full time job. i can take on very few other hyperfixations. kpop hasnt been one since i was 14.#i dont have the mental energy to read fifty different call out posts and defenses for people that arent already part of my mental rotation#this seems important to you tho and if you do want to talk more please come off anon and message me#im happy to listen and talk about it more! bts/kpop is just not a jar of worms im willing to open on my own ive got too much else going on
