gen question tho do you wonder why the culture of fanfic has shifted to where smut is by far the most common and most popular type of fic? i stumbled upon a writer a few months ago who openly admitted to only writing what she did because it got her followers and notes on her posts and she apologized for mischaracterizing some characters in her smut pieces. it was the first time ive ever seen that as just something ppl talked about and felt comfortable to say

i have a metapost about this somewhere floating around this blog but the long and short of it is that fandom is reflecting our current cultural values around commodity and instant gratification.

it's hard to describe but the commodification of fandom has generally made some parts of it performative. people dont see reading fanfiction as just... engaging with someones work but as a kind of consumption. authors are not people but "content" creators. artists must advertise themselves to recieve any noteworthy response.

so its less community oriented and more commodified.

im a smut blog primarily so i have to clarify - there's nothing wrong with people choosing to write smut or preferring to read it. im not critiquing smut itself or its presence in fandom culture. and i never would. i literally write porn and smut itself has plenty of merit and value. and its especially important to be writing really dirty erotica in a culture that is sex obsessed yet so puritanical

the issue itself lies with how that process has ultimately dismantled the community aspect of fandom. if you've been present in fanculture prior to 2020 - you will know it was not like this. proship discourse, engagement discourse, etc - all of this happens because fandom culture itself has become a commodity

i think smut as a genre provides ease of tension and the most instant gratification in terms of writing. things like long ongoing fic that may or may not finished, or angst, or fluff - these things can, and do get popular from time to time. but people have a much shorter attention span, and getting that same type of release will take longer.

specifically it will require a reader to engage in the story more actively to see it through. that used to be the norm. but fandom itself has been commodified - so people view all of this as a passive and endless stream of content they can observe instead of a community of people in which their presence as lurkers and readers are needed. this also why i think a lot of engagement discourse can feel very misdirected

there is no longer and ecosystem in which to preserve the things that made fandom good. its reflective of the culture. the same reason smut blows up and and why netflix release 8 episode action packed series instead of 25 with better pacing is the same - the causation for these things are the same. its commodity, need for gratification, and trying to get ahold and maintain peoples attention.

its not the fault of author nor readers that this happens. theres always merit in writing your own original work. there's merit in all writing.

the increased popularity of smut is just a byproduct of the culture we're in right now. it doesn't make all smut low effort or automatically less worthy of peoples time (which is why i feel deeply irritated when i see posts talking about how the tags are only smut) . its just the genre with the quickest release of tension, and that's why people are seeking out in their media all the time right now.

fandom reflects culture, not the other way around. and right now culture demands engagement be solely to be gratified, as consumed - instead of experienced and enjoyed.

Youre right about jinx and silco being emotionally incestuous and u should say it louder. I hated jilco fics sm when i was fresh to arcane because it's not fun to run into a gross what-if for my own childhood. But it's real. even if jinx and silco would rather eat lead than fuck each other, they're still incesty; I wouldnt have wanted to have sex w my parent, but we were close in a way we should not have been. It's just a fact of parent+child codependency that your relationship gets weirdly, almost romantically enmeshed. being codependent & a teenager at the same time genuinely screws up ur head. Thats why therapy exists

here is my only take on darkfic or proship or whatever discourse people wanna call it: yes, the majority of those tags are not lolita, they are just bad porn. truth is, the mythical ao3 fic that's so good it should be published is just very rare because if you could write lolita or beloved, you wouldn't be on ao3 you would be winning Nike awards. majority of ao3 tags are just bad porn in general because that's very easy to write and most of humanity are just not good writers, that's statistics. as someone who checks both noncon and rape recovery tags, I can tell you they are both very bad and can perpetuate horrible stereotypes and ideas in their own ways because they are written by people and people don't have themselves as examined as we like to imagine. I have an extreme issue with people acting like only these highest tier level books or fics or whatever are allowed to touch on those topics because it goes unacknowledged that this IS the highest tier level in both quality and literacy. majority of people are not reading beloved because an average reading level is very low and those people are more likely to interact with things we dont consider well written and produce things that are not very good. but things happen to people who aren't that educated too and those people interact with the world around them too and they are also adults. I never once want to come off like I expect people to present trauma credentials at the door to be allowed to be interested in or produce different content and that means I'm accepting that refusing this survivors vs freaks discourse dichotomy means here be freaks and I'm okay with that. rape existed before we had language and it will exist long after elon musk puts microchips in our heads that make us communicate in binary code only - and then of course those things we make influence us further too, reality is just a snake eating its tail like this

sorry this was a tangent because I always fear when I start these topics online people will pull me into their discourse so I want to say I rdject the discourse the way it exists from the start shsjjs and I say this all as someone who does have triggers and who does check sexual assault warnings for movies and such, ao3 is honestly where i will always pledge my allegiance as a fic site just because of the tag system making it so easy to control content you see

I think the fact that I always feel like I should make those disclaimers is why it's so hard to have these conversations in fandom or just social spaces, because people don't actually want to talk, they want you to establish that you are the right moral agent to align with. I was gonna say this feels like a very western culture thing but I think you see it across so many cultures actually, that discomfort becomes inherent harm and breaking social parameters is considered violence so if you bring up something that is uncomfortable, that is complicated, you're the problem because you said it. there are parts of this fandom that don't even want to acknowledge that silco is not a very good person and he's an emotionally abusive parent because if piltover are the bad guys then we obviously have good guys in zaun but people, and by extension fictional people, are more complex than that. on smaller scale you see it in families often, this type of playing pretend and not talking about things and then if you're the one who talks they will say it's you who is toxic because you ruined the vibes, you should just shut up and accept it like everybody else does

but the thing is that a culture of silence has never once benefitted victims, and refusing to accept that depictions of abuse and the conversations around them exist in different ways and shades is exactly that, it's a culture of silence that refuses to accept that the world is so complicated and so the violence in it is so complicated. and families can get SO complex, when you grow up into an independent - emotionally, sexually, physically, whatever - human being around people who are fucking insane and they are so wrapped up in your core development across everything, things get messy

So who's this "Twilight Phantom"?

I play a strict game with myself when it comes to my main blorbo: 98% of what the FLPC does, in the exact order i do it, is canon.

This also applies to small things like their possessions/wardrobe, for example - they pretty much only have the in-game items I own in the account to wear. Finding out reasons to explain why they keep the things they own is part of the fun. (this game made them out to be a weirdo, naturally)

It's been lots of fun to see this clean slate (and i do mean clean - i knew nothing about the setting/lore, or who they were as a person, so. well. this guy didn't either) get shaped by RNG, the narrative, And my mechanical wiki-fueled optimization decisions.

another extra rule i made for myself as a treat was making them a sponge to compensate for their inherent emptiness. this means they incorporate something from each important NPC they get involved with. they are a singer because of Clara and her twin. they only own a lab & got interested in studying & research bc of Dr. Vaughan. they got a taste for exercise bc they accompanied Hephaesta's workouts for so long. and so on and so forth.

The first thing you notice about them is the cowl lazily draped around their head and shoulders, swaying behind their back like a cape in the colours of sunrise-- or, perhaps most familiarly, the velvety twilight that the newest star every so often provides to London.  The second thing is the deep scars covering one side of their face, and the third thing would probably be the heavy eyebags under their sharp, dark eyes.

A relatively freshly-minted Silverer, H. Reisz spends more time in Parabola than London nowadays. Not that they had been in London for too long anyway, and it's not like anyone knows where they were before that either. The surface, yes, but it's a big world out there, right? They don't actually remember seeing the sun, or the sky, but H cannot deny the soft colours of twilight and sunrise have a special place in their heart. They recognise it without the memory of experiencing it, just like they recognised love in the depths of a certain Labyrinth. Hmm, two Labyrinths, actually. There was that one heiress too... and the Orphanage was inside one hell of a maze too... if they had a coin every time they found themself inside labyrinths, they'd... Uh, where were we? Well, anyway, being a new face, they had nothing to be known for so they simply gave out their surname instead. Or well, what they assumed to be their surname. "H. REISZ" were the letters sewn-in on a diminute corner of the tattered black veil that wrapped their head back when they woke up for the "first" time. They were surrounded by near-empty bottles of dried mouldy honey, absinthe, and who knows what else. Ah, the decadence... they couldn't even remember what honey could do at the time but they could recognise the stench of self-destruction right away, haha.  Alas, if things were so bad they got to that point-- maybe this explains why moving on was so easy. Maybe they had somehow lobotomized themself on purpose. Who knows? They sure don't. It was only now, a year or so after waking up, that an epithet has started to stick around-- specifically by their actions as a Silverer and the services they provided. From nightmare-slaying to fishing out vestigial memories (the irony of an amnesiac doing this is not lost on them) to guiding and safeguarding lost dreamers, their glimmering signature cowl and the way it flowed rather phantasmagorically in Parabola started to leave an impression. To many dreamers, seeing a hint of pastel twilight colors signaled safety. It signaled someone you could trust to get inside your head. :)

I just tried editing the independent fallout wiki and man, they are some real stick in the muds about how you write

i think about it in terms of legal theory:

the culture of nukapedia currently moves towards building a more useful and interesting website for fallout fans. implicit end of. if your additions are accurate and decently written, or even just clear in intent, that is usually enough to survive the peer revision process.

whereas IFW seems to generally move towards the notion that existing policy can be applied to corporate materials to prescribe a perfect article, and it is the editor's job to fill that article in and leave. nearly all verbiage is lifted directly from citations and presented as plainly as possible. 'apparently-non-objective' observations are aggressively bounced at the door. Therefore, All Text On IFW Is Objective, Definitive, And Could Not Possibly Be Mistaken By Anyone For Misinformation Under Any Circumstances.

it's really hard to get deductive observations to stick over there unless you can cite something reputable to legitimize it, like, say, kotaku headlines

which, in practice, gives things a certain... "kotaku headlines about fallout" flavor... but it's the most objective way

anyway, i was looking up... i don't even remember at the time. and i discovered deviantart, and i discovered this person's OCs. read a lot about them, including some fanfic, and then eventually discovered fanfiction.net

i didn't realize what it was at first; i thought it was just a writing in general site? and i was like oh! i can share the book i'm working on! (i have been trying to write a novel since i was 10). and then as i was looking into where i would post it, i realized what it actually was. (no, the title didn't give it away. idk why.)

so then i was like oh!!! this is really cool actually!!! and i wrote my first fanfic xD

that was in 2011? so i was 12, almost 13.

I was very surprised when I realized that it was not the badass with the gun I was fixated on, but the. big muscle-y guy who cries a lot and gets used for comic relief 60% of the time. but. im here. i love him. the ishval flashbacks got to me.

Cora Sabino (Noumena Series) - I wish I could tell everyone to read Axiom's End because I loved it, but I cant because the sequel fucked me up so bad. Its good! but god the atmosphere is so oppressive and Cora's struggle with depression is extremely real for an alternate history story that asks the question "what if we found out aliens were real during the bush administration?" I was legitimately unwell.

Obi-Wan Kenobi (Star Wars) - I just think he's the funniest guy with a laser sword. so repressed. had one of the most grey-jedi masters to ever do the damn thing. bitchy. the chosen one is his padawan. honestly he had to know anakin was sneaking out to canoodle with padme and just decided it wasn't his problem. calls himself fucking ben on the hell sand planet. why was he like that.

Spock (Star Trek) - this is the most "i just think he's neat" of all of them. i inherited this blorbo. this blorbo was handed down to me from my mom. he was hers first, im just picking up the torch. "guy who acts like he has no emotions but every seven years enters a fuck or die frenzy" im sorry but that's. that's too good. i have no choice but to rotate him in my mind.

HII omg dont be !! pls feel free to send stuff whenever !! ok so i have TONS of connor hc’s ( i’ve been writing as him & for him for years now ) but here’s my faves + the ones that are usually present in my art . ( gotta mention that some are very personal & self indulgent bc i see myself in connor a LOT 😭 ) tw for a quick mention of razors .

- i made a post abt this hc here but i’m adding it because it’s the main reason why i use a certain color for connor’s hair , & that is that connor is a ginger ( just like zoe & cynthia ) & he dyes his hair a darker color so he doesn’t look much like them ( & he doesn’t get associated with zoe much at school ) he usually uses a dark brown or even black , but it’s usually very sloppy so his hair ends up being patchy in some areas or just not dark enough .

- connor uses he / they pronouns mostly bc they’re very detached to his gender identity because they don’t feel human most of the time . connor looks in the mirror & doesn’t think ‘ boy ‘ , most of the time he thinks ‘ failure ‘ , ‘ disappointment ‘ , ‘ monster ‘ . he’s also unlabeled & mostly finds male presenting ppl attractive but has been with female presenting ppl a few times . ( i’ll mostly use he / him in tags but in my writing i will use both set of pronouns ! )

- ik freckles have been a recurring headcanon for connor throughout the years in the fandom but i wanna add it too bc his freckles mean so much to me . a connor without freckles is like an angel without its wings likeee ! ( i usually add freckles to charas that i like tho ) they are usually more present over his cheeks , shoulders & chest . some on his hands & thighs too . for a while , connor fucking HATED them , & i once wrote a lil thing where he even tried to remove a particularly big one near his lip w a razor . ( i add it to my drawings a lot , if you check it’s above the right ( his left ) corner of his lip )

- his hair length varies a lot in my stuff bc i’ll sometimes get carried away & make it longer for aesthetic or composition purposes , but i do believe connor would def let it get longer than shoulder length ( not small of his back like in some of my stuff , but definitely to half of his chest maybe ? ) larry def gives him shit abt it & only encourages him to keep it longer & longer .

- this is also a recurring hc but imma mention it too & that’s eyeliner . & tons of it . i’ll sometimes make it smudged bc connor will prob cry & it’ll run . once he’s done he’ll just apply more over it . & black nail polish too ofc .

You know what, I put al my thoughts in the tags but I have so much more to say about this so EDIT, i'm putting my thoughts here instead of studying for my math final that I have in 2 days.

Klance was 10000% queerbait but I only blame the producers for it. The creative team was put through HELL because the producers couldn't decide on a course of action to take after Dreamworks forced them to keep Shiro alive instead of killing him off permanently like they originally planned. (There is a fantastic video essay about some of the behind the scenes drama that was uncovered. I'll link to it here. The creator of the essay was a Shieth shipper so you know I mean it when I say its a good video essay)

Anyway, Dreamworks made the VLD creative team keep Shiro alive because he was so popular, and since that pretty much fucked up the entire rest of the story in order to have Shiro be in it, the producers were stuck with the mess Dreamworks put them in. But instead of making the logical decision of asking for an extension on production for whatever reason, because it be too expensive to rewrite and reboard all of the following seasons that were already in production after season 2 was released, or something, the producers continued with production as scheduled but completely blind. (All this is covered in the video essay I linked, seriously i recommend watching it, it actually puts a lot of the issues with VLD into perspective) Literally anything beyond season 2 had no clear plan. If it feels like the story was being made up as it went along, its because it literally was. Thats why so many things made no sense in later seasons, there was absolutely no plan.

So what does this have to do with Klance? Well its simple. If the rumors are true and Klance was originally planned from the very beginning (which I wholeheartedly believe), then this change of plans completely fucked everything over. The reason why Keith was barely in seasons 4-6 was because the producers had to make the choice of either keeping Keith or Shiro more present in the series. The whole "Shiro was a clone" thing was made to cover this. Keith was barely in those seasons because Shiro was taking his place, and Shiro was never supposed to be there. (Again, all covered in the video essay) Because of all the last minute changes being made to the story, Keith was almost completely written out of season 4-6. How are you supposed to write a love story between two characters if one of the characters isn't even there??? You can't.

But here's where it gets messy. If Klance was originally supposed to happen, but the last minute changes made it almost impossible for a natural romantic progression to happen between Keith and Lance, why the fuck did they keep hinting at it? You know what I'm talking about: the thumbnails, the tagging, the fucking HotTopic merch. If Klance was no longer logically possible because the story had to be taken in a completely different direction, why was Klance being hinted at like it was?

I'll tell you why.

Its because Klance was the driving force behind VLD's popularity. Without Klance, VLD wouldn't have been nearly as popular as it was. Check Fandometrics from 2017-2019. In 2018, VLD and Klance were listed as two separate fandoms in the Top 10 Most Popular Fandoms list. Klance held first place rank for most popular ship from 2017-2018, and was in second place in 2019 being beaten by Good Omen's Ineffable Husbands. And thats just on TUMBLR, thats not even considering Twitter and Instagram. Klance was obnoxiously popular from 2017-2019 because literally everyone saw its potential. Without the numbers and the ratings the Klance fandom was raking in, the show would have probably been canceled because the story was a MESS, it was either super confusing or super boring. The Klance fandom was what kept VLD alive, and the producers knew this.

(Does this justify any of the Klance fandoms actions toward the VLD cast and crew? Absolutely not. There's a reason why the VLD/Klance fandom is one of the most notoriously toxic fandoms on the internet.)

So instead of just dropping Klance and leaving the early season Klance interactions up for speculation, the producers made the worst possible decision and kept hinting at Klance even though they knew it probably could never happen due to the decisions they had to make because of the Dreamworks exects. And since literally no one on the creative team knew what was happening because they were all making it up as they went along, they too thought Klance was still a possible endgame. So the storyboard artists drawing this stuff and the cast (Jeremy Shada specifically) continuing to talk about Klance as if it was endgame wasn't them baiting us, it was them being baited as well. The producers could have easily been like "Hey, we don't think Klance can be possible anymore because of XYZ, lets stop talking about it to please the fandom" and instead decided to exploit the Klance fanbase in order to keep the show running.

The whole Shiro and Adam thing is the more famous and obvious example of queerbaiting the VLD producers did, but Klance was the more sinister example. They kept feeding the already violent Klance fandom with hope because they needed their devotion to keep the show alive. They were using Klance as bait since SEASON 3, for practically the ENTIRE SHOW'S EXISTENCE.

Yes the Klance fandom was rabid and insanely toxic, but the blame can't be 100% put on the fandom when the producers were knowingly enabling the Klance fandom. Again, Klance was no longer a logical possibility because of the direction the show had to take in order to meet Dreamworks' demands, but they still depended on Klance's popularity to keep the show running. The actual fucking lives of the VLD cast and crew were being T H R E A T E N E D by the rabid Klance fans, and the producers really thought to themselves, "Yeah, the safety of our cast and crew are being threatened by obsessive fans, but lets keep baiting them with the thing they want so we can get the numbers and ratings we need to continue to run."

The producers were put in an incredibly tough spot when their story was forcibly being changed because of the exects, I'll give them that. But it doesn't justify any of the queerbaiting bullshit they pulled in order to keep an already declining show running, and it certainly doesn't justify allowing the Klance fandom to threaten the LIVES AND SAFTEY OF THEIR CAST AND CREW for ratings.

just seen some people say they didnt vibe with max's running up that hill scene and i think that reactions and people reacting quickly about media for socials is part of the cause of this new thing where people have so many divisive opinions. when i watch something new i am eyes and ears at full alert, taking in everything as it goes rather than trying to figure the plot out ahead of time, and i realised i would make a shit reactor because it's all happening internally. i dont want to express anything aloud as i watch because you would miss something; dialogue, music, emotional beats? even if stories aren't meant to be consumed in dead silence, i'm amazed at how quickly people form coherent opinions about characters a split second after they've done something instead of just seeing how everything plays out. i'm thinking about lucas 'betraying' the party in s4, people thinking he was genuinely hunting eddie instead of just seeing where his story went. in terms of byler, even now with the story unfinished i am so unable to conjecture real 'proof' or evidences of byler wholly because its open ended! i wont judge anyone until the story is complete.

i'm just amazed by these reactors because theyre usually just GA/nerds, and its fascinating to see them respond and react so quickly and so judgementally, i wonder if it's partially for views now instead of an honest reaction theyre sharing online.

Reaction videos are not something I watch, unless a very funny clip gets shared, I guess because I'm maybe feeling some of the same things you are - they don't feel sincere a lot of the time? I don't think there's anything wrong with all of them. I know a lot of people like watching them especially after they finish a show so they can go back and see what others are taking away which could be interesting. It depends on the reactor. So I can understand the appeal to an extent, but I don't personally like a lot of that format because like you said, the initial over the top gut reaction isn't that useful to me? I'm also mentally absorbing a show if I watch. I'll gasp or maybe cry a little at a scene, laugh, but mostly I'm just watching. The reactor videos are a performance, but then these folks use that performance to inform their opinion. It's a little too off the cuff for my personal taste.

I think for me, I just can't imagine ever filming myself watching something to showcase my emotions, especially if it's something I really care about? So I don't trust reactors as true fans. Because it's just not so authentic. You're aware of the content you're trying to capture. You overly emote, you pay more attention to the fact that you're recording. It's never completely a natural opinion or reaction. I'm not so much into livetweeting/liveblogging, either, so that's probably a factor. Sounds pretentious, but if I care about a movie or show, the first time I watch it I need to be present.

I know when season five drops, I'm turning off my phone from the moment it's available on netflix until I've finished watching what's out myself. That's my plan. Divisive is the key word. Social media moves fast and everyone wants to be the first to post something or see something or point something out. I'll be ok being a day late to things!!

It's why the main Byler fandom on tumblr isn't appealing to me anymore, because one thing I kept seeing is people getting pissy about folks 'pointing out stuff that's been talked about already too many times' or 'I already thought of this theory first and this user is copying me now' as if everyone watched and thinks at the same pace? As if people innately know every post that's ever been made on tumblr or added under the tag? Calm down. Yeah, if it's a rage bait opinion, or blatant plagiarism, but that's not what I'm talking about.
