Timerunning is going on, Season 4 is a thing so people are doing M+, but not as much because it's the last season and most people just get KSM or KSH and dip (like I did, I got KSM and just stopped altogether lol, first time too, a bit burned out from it lol)

Please say more about the awful Asian designs in Danny Phantom. I'm not Asian but I'd love to have a rundown on the elements that make them offensive so I can avoid and critique those elements in other works. And also you deserve to speak your mind about it

im gonna mostly talk about southeast asian designs since thats what i am and the most familiar with and also what i feel are the show's worst transgression with their casual depictions. tw for racist imagery im gonna link pictures.

there's not much to say about the designs aside from, you know, everything but things to note are the unnatural yellow tone for the skin and closed slanted eyes. veggie burger (fan name for the bg character in the middle) also suffers from the huge nose that sometimes shows up in racist depictions. the straight edge/cut hair as well is somewhat stereotypical. this one isn't as bad but in conjunction with everything else its not ideal. i will give the smallest molecule of credit that at the very least dp never gave any of these bg characters buck teeth.

some depictions are better than others, but theres still missteps happening in one aspect or another. kwan's eyes in a lot of shots/episodes can be too skinny and even too slanted, the girl in the middle is almost perfect but her skin is too yellow (she looks kinda okay on my computer screen but i remember when watching dp on my tv she looked real brightly yellow), and principle ishiyama (who was weirdly forgotten about pretty early on in the show and was replaced by lancer doing most of the school stuff despite not being principle?? which is a whole other issue with how dp treats its poc characters) the same usual notes about the slanted eyes but also the upturned nose is pretty reminiscent of racist japanese art during ww2. again it is not the worst way to draw a nose but combined with everything else in this show's depiction of asian characters its not great, they are on thin ice man.

not to mention, principle ishiyama is the only character here with brown eyes. this is a problem that extends to all poc characters in dp and to my knowledge i think ishiyama might be the only one with them tbh. this is, again, a whole other issue though.

i think the thing that bothers me most about these designs though is that dp is very clearly aware that these depictions are bad. the only difference between the first set of characters and the second is one singular thing: they have a clear speaking role.

suddenly when theyre not stock background characters, dp knows how to act when drawing them. i cannot for the life of me find the image of it, but the last jock guy in the first set gets a speaking role in reign storm (he's cosplaying phantom) and he is drawn with proper open eyes! (theyre also blue but whatever) it just makes me sad that this was a clear choice they made.

the show also went in a different direction in the final product, but early development stuff was really drawing from a lot of japanese/asian influences like danny was originally gonna have a motorcycle (pulling from ghost in the shell) and was even referenced in the show via the akira motorcycle reference (which i once again, for the life of me, cannot find. danny took johnny 13's motorcycle and did the classic akira slide i think it was in million dollar ghost?? idk whichever one where the giw are trying to blow up the ghost zone). danny's name was originally gonna be jackie, named after jackie chan, this i assume was given to jack fenton afterwards. and i think the show having a more martial arts direction with the action was also gonna be a thing? that one could be wrong dont quote me on that, there was an episode where danny and vlad have like a weird ninja fight though im pretty sure.

either way my point here is that they wanted to pull from all these influences and it was prominent enough during development that they sprinkle references to it throughout the show and yet their portrayal and treatment of asian characters in the show is so abysmal it just feels Bad™, you know? i cant really put it more eloquently than that, like its very take and no give with it.

it overall just puts a bad taste in my mouth, and its sad that it still affects people years later. like i mentioned in the tags of the post that started this discussion with that whole old trend of putting yourself into the bg of dp screenshots, i felt alienated by that. and its not the people who participated's fault obviously but most of the people i saw participating were white fans (going off of how they drew themselves) and it made me a bit mad that they were able to enjoy the style of the show in a more carefree manner than i ever could. i didnt want to ruin anyone's fun obviously, but a small part of me wanted to bring to light how i wasnt on equal ground with them in that situation.

it just sucks if you want to be moderately normal to say the least yet every other person now has adhd and a screen addiction thats so bad they cant put their phone down not saying im perfect at it myself but i think we have to be better than this if we want to really be happy. yet everyones normalised all of this internet phone screen time and so on that i cant see an end to it any time soon.

then every other person talks in some weird language you dont know nor care about because everything is intended to be a viral meme or some other shit. thats why i wanted to know if time travel was real or not because ya girl wants to go back to a non internet era. it seriously was moderately better and as kids we had no urge to be on a device so long. it is ridiculous when u think abt it. but now i feel like i need to be indoctrinated into the same view points as everyone else and it makes my brain feel like mush afterwards.

i dont think people arent even aware of how bad they genuinely sound even the saying dont forget to like and subscribe, leave a comment down below is enough to make me not want to do that but at the same time i still feel swayed into subscribing to someones attention seeking desires for them to be known. i also feel like that was liam paynes demise he loved it too much and was addicted to being known that he couldnt not be known if that makes sense? i mean he was in THE biggest bg of his era thats pretty substaintial proof of his success but that alone still wasnt enough for him not to mention they all get diddled with early on its so unpleasant to think of what they must really be like when they arent trying to be something theyre not.

You can’t control the world but you can work on yourself.

The fact that you think you owe anyone a like or a subscribe is an internal problem. You can do what you want and no one can tell you otherwise. It’s your allowance of it that will make or break your life.

You also don’t have to participate in the collective madness. There are people out there who live differently than what you described.

What you focus on grows. There will always be something wrong with the world. Some things don’t deserve your time or attention. A lot of what you said is a US problem.

I had the opportunity to live in Canada, USA and Europe among people of various income levels, from poor to well off, and people outside of the US live differently. They have communities, they have real friends, they actually meet and put their phones down. People also have social media success all around the world. There are many ways to live and you get to choose not to associate with what bothers you.

I was originally going to write this on the reblog of another post, but I don't want to bother the op of that post with this short essay so I'll do it on my own post.

ok like i dont want to be harsh to something that we have literally not even seen in motion but i absolutely hate the lighting and texturing of this. I thought this was a promo for the nintendo park at first. It doesn't look like a mushroom kingdom it looks like the nintendo amusement park. It even has the same harsh sunlight over harsh pavement like universal's park. And the hills... I don't know, I find them really unappealing. The grass detail doesn't sit right with me, it looks too real and too fake at the same time.

Super Mario odyssey looks better than this thing honestly, that game also went for a bit more detail than other mario games and it did a really good job of it, making it look better than the plastic look of 3D World. But this one seems to have gone too far in the other direction.

The more I look into the giant pipe wall the more it makes sense, but at first glance it looks really unappealing to me. I don't know, I feel like I'm being biased against a really superficial image of the movie, but it already strikes a bad chord with me. I guess it depends on the script - the sonic movies in my opinion glow because of their understanding of the sonic characters and it's good usage of them. This may be able to do the same for Mario... but we'll see.

Like i guess it's kind of unfair to expect them to copy paste anything, and it's the only thing that's clearly copy-pasted, but whatever.

Also how do those blocks connect to the wall? Even in smb3they made sense as random boxes that sat on the ground. Why is this attached to this wall?

And while this is 2D and not 3D and this is a different part of the kingdom, this already shows understanding of a pleasing color palete and lighting, as well as how to adapt the mario world in a way that looks... cohesive, like it's a real world and not a bunch of random blocks, while retaining enough aspects of the original world for it to be faithful. And this type of knowledge could've been applied to a 3D project as well.

It also has a better color palette and a better use of texturing. Makes me thing a more stylized look would look better for a mario movie, but illumination only makes movies on one style so idk.

And THIS is concept art for Mario Odyssey. Art that's literally meant to be adapted into 3D later. And this too, to me, looks more visually interesting, or nice, pleaseant. While the poster above looks like... an advertisement for a theme park.

I feel I have two big things on my back - the hate of the generic style while a more stylized one could look beautiful, and the hate of the actual structure of the world in the poster. It looks like the theme park in Japan, and that's not a compliment. When the creators of Mario Odyssey draw the mushroom kingdom like THIS... why, when free from the contraints that come from creating a playable Mario scene, do you try to imitate visually unappealing aspects of a world? Why stick to blocks? Why can't you reimagine the world in a more creative light? But again... it's clear why. It's an advertisement for the park. It's clear as fucking day. It looks like an amusement park because that's why they are promoting it. Maybe that's why they are making it.

...But I guess we'll have to wait until two days from now...

BRUNO VARGAS  :   i’m copy pasting the fc meme. he bought a “capitalism is unsustainable” sticker off of amazon. prime example of that “little confused but he’s got the spirit” meme. he threw himself into the social activism scene after he dropped out of college and ran away to the city to really make something of himself. he really wants to do good things for good reasons his heart is in the right place he’s just a dumbass. grew up in a traditional catholic military family but hasn’t had contact w them for a minute. lives in the fold because he thinks its cool 2 force people 2 hang out with him. works for an indie underground news publication.

plots for him include  :  yeah  maybe i am still stuck on the boyfriend/girlfriend plot. im not married to it being bf n gf if it just works 2 be 2 gfs or 2 bfs anyways. plot would be that one partner bruno has had longer and has openly been with for a minute now. second partner would be more recent and bc of that less of the whole official We’re Together :) kind of thing. both partners would know he’s seeing other people, but he hasnt gone out of his way to specifically out either of them, p2 just knows about p1 bc they were openly w bruno whereas they arent yet. if that makes literally any sense

COLE EDWARDS  :  bit of a weirdo. she does something behind the scenes i was thinking like set design because thats something that weirdly really interests me. anyways shes a doormat but in a different way than molly could be read that way she really just likes to be involved in things and help people. ~quirky~ but one day , she will snap. u can tell when u see her at craft night and she gets so much hot glue on her hand but doesnt even react. its like she cant feel it... feel better cole...

plots for her   :  cole could work for laguna beach or as the mystery novak stepsib im not married to her being on the show or not yet. i figured she could be fun there because she would be a light addition to all these Reality Tv Bastards u know. her bg and plots will fit whichever subplot i use her for so . tba

HOLLIS MESSINA   :   kill him NOW .   hollis is a bad man. not to godmod michele but in my head their parents are also like weird arsty types not necessarily famous but always very into the arts all thru their childhood. they grew up eating a lot of kale and maybe thats why hollis is the way he is. he’s vapid and very insecure because he wants so bad to be cool and funny and talented and suffers from major impostor syndrome which contributes to his online shopping addiction. take a nap hollis...

JAMES ZAMORA   :  instagram model and youtuber. new media thot. she makes beauty, fashion, lifestyle, and travel related content. her entire brand is being A Sexy Little Trollop for people to envy. came from humble beginnings believe it or not, but she will never tell anyone that. as far as they need to be concerned shes been toddling around in heels since day one. lives in the fold because it makes for quirky content but once a month she threatens to get the hell out of here.. no one knows why she stays..

MOLLY SEKULIC   :   for the first week he lived at the fold noah thought she was a ghost :0  jadede film school student who thought she would get to do real documentary work at a place like b*zzfeed news but got put on projects shes not as passionate about 2 put it kindly. constantly planning her escape from the fold and worth it and all of that but 2 depressed to actually put any of it into play so she just sticks around and hopes one day she’s tapped for something with Substance

plots for her  :  she just doesnt get out much. shes got her Horrible sons (alec and [redacted]) and the girlies she hangs out with at the fold so shes not a completely friendless loser. with muses also working in film i think it could be fun to have a plot where they went to school together/worked on a project earlyo n together but now shes doing this and is embarrassed to talk to them abt it not that its even that real of a plot..

NOAH FITZGERALD  :  i wrote an intro for him in fold and im just gonna link it here. tldr hes very shy,, be gentle,, he wants to be liked and validated which is a common theme for me becuase yeah maybe in my core i dont believe anyone pursuing art does it for any reason but validation i sure know i do

WYATT SONG   :   gay writer bitch. came from money so he’s just casually pursuing writing full time minus the time he spends on the show (bit less than everyone else just because watching him sit in his home office and do nothing for hours just isnt interesting) but i kinda like the idea of him being a Villain within the show like idk what dynamics we were wanting to set up but i feel ike since he’s more reclusive than the others and when he is around hes Annoying he could be someone the show kinda frames as Not Likable which mostly doesnt bother him but . stings a little

my god i had to wake up my grandma at like 3am (her time) to get her to send me her credit card number so i could buy a seat on the next flight it was so annoying. he didnt even have a valid excuse to keep me there other than 'lol you're unlucky and youre the one we're gonna check every bit of your story' and i was like 'what part of i went on summer vacay to visit family and now im coming back. to my home country. to go to school. im literally a minor (i was 13 at the time) here is my flight attendant buddy next time grow some balls and stop bullying kids 🙄🙄 i think he thought my passport was fake or sthing bc american passports all have that awful reflective decoration in the bg which makes scanners a literal nightmare (pls dont remind of that one time i was stuck on the singapore border where i was literally in tears trying to get the stupid automated machine to scan my passport and then the staff had to go down the entire line of 20 some scanners to get one to allow me home 🤣🤣 i dont remember how one hero managed to get it to work but i do remember being fully prepared to renounce my citizenship to go home🤣🤣🤣)

Hi sorry if I'm bothering you but I love your legacy so much and I was wondering, how do you get attached to you sims so you continue to play them? I've made lots of sims and tried stories and stuff but I never seem to begin to love them. Thanks in advance :)

hiiii!!! not a bother at all! it took be a really long time to truly fall in love with a family for my legacy, i stopped and started so much and even got to the point where i fell out of love with my original simblr fam (rip the montgomerys 3)

HOWEVER!! i’ve found the key for me personally is to not force myself to play with them! you want to take a break from simblr? DO IT! ive done it so many times and who cares! i know the people who love my legacy will continue to read it if theres 3 hours between posts or 3 months! (is now a bad time to mention my queue runs out in 3 days? anyway)

another massive thing for me personally is that i love story driven legacies! i have a google doc where i plan everything and i find that seeing my goals for my own legacy rly motivates me and reminds me why i love them and why i want to continue sharing them with u all!! 

now thats out of the way, to sims themselves - don’t be afraid to scrap a fam and start anew! im absolutely in love with my lil aspyn clarke, more than ive ever loved a sim but dw it took me a few tries. but here’s some things i found useful: — build them a personality outside of the traits - aspyn might be squeamish, perfectionist and romantic but shes also driven and proud of her work as well as a lil insecure and nervous around people she likes and also can be overly proud and kinda full of herself.. these arent traits obviously but theyre things i think about her and helps me shape her as more than just a sim. dont make them perfect people with perfect traits, theyre not people let alone perfect but u get my gist. — also for me, i share dumb quirky things with haley and jills that you cant replicate in the sims but thats how i see my own sim and thats why i love her - jills sent me this random photo of a girl with pride flags and loser written in the bg and said it was aspyn and it was true! getting your pals involved in your sims helps a lot and if you dont wanna to share with your friends, you can share with me (im ur friend but besides the point here anon)— also pinterest boards!! i love pinterest boards omg. i have some for aspyn and lucy (as well as some future charas we havent met yet) but they also help me visualise how i see my characters and inspire me.

Is there one aspect of yourself that you dont like? Is there more than one?I’m not as strong or smart as I’d like to be.  But that’s probably true of everyone. What is something you thought you’d never like, but you enjoy now? A lot of vegetables? X-D  Early on I was afraid of driving, but I love it now.  Especially at night.  I saw a fox, while on the way to work, this evening.  You don’t see things like that during the day, very often.

Did your parents ever not let you watch any television shows as a child? My grandmother (who had a significant hand in raising me, much to her resentment) tried to be strict, but mostly she was just glad I was being quiet and out of her hair, so her tendency to enforce things was spotty.  My mother might have been more strict about that kind of thing, when I was little, if she hadn’t worked nights and been asleep fairly often when I was at her house.   Have you ever betrayed one of your parents in any way at all? Doing what? The shortest and most accurate answer is: not in any way that they didn’t betray me worse.  So, not in any way that I regret.  But, it asks “doing what” so... examples:  In my teens, my mother considered it a betrayal when I answered my late step-father honestly that, yes, she had always been unstable.  She also considered it a betrayal, that time she was really drunk and tried to hold me between herself and the police, then got maced when I dodged out of the way. My father considered it a betrayal when he told me to either become more of a part of the family or he would never drive me to work again (which was a fairly empty threat, considering he rarely did in the first place).  However, my take on the situation was that any family that pulls you in with threats instead of love and support  wasn’t worth being part of, so I took it as my cue to move out and not speak to him for six months.   Stuff like that.

What are your favorite stores to go to when you visit the mall? The one here in town is practically empty.  But when I go to one that isn’t, I’ll admit to still checking out Hot Topic or Torrid if there is one.  I used to love Teavana, before it closed.  

What do you want to be your career if you’re not already fufilling it? World-traveling writer.  

Have you ever considered yourself a failure at any time in life? I have failed at things, but I’ve never considered myself A Failure.  I’m my primary reliable ally, at the end of the day, so there’s no sense getting as down on myself as all that.

Has anyone ever told you they don’t like the way you run your life? Probably, but I wasn’t listening at the time, so I couldn’t give you details.

Do you have any plans for this weekend or are you completely plan-free? Weekend as in my days off: maybe cook a thing, work on the gown for FaerieCon, go out to tea, visit my grandfather at the old folks’ home.

Do you find old people adorable, or have you ever found them quite creepy? Depends on the old person.  I rarely find them creepy, but fairly often I do end up finding them disagreeable.  There are some adorable ones, though.

Does it bother you when you comment someone’s pictures and they dont even comment you saying ‘thank you’ or comment one of your pictures? Not especially.  It’s not something I do that often, anyway.

When was the last time you had a complete meal? What did you eat then? Today I had soup and a sandwich.

Do you like cranberry juice alone? Or do you absolutely loathe it? I like it alright, but there are other juices I like better.  Then again, if you mix it with vanilla schnapps you get something that tastes rather like cherry cheesecake, so that’s a point in its favor.

Their trust is immaterial, but at this point yes they would.  I’m more responsible with my money than either of them.  That said, I don’t do credit cards.  I don’t like the idea of owing anyone more money than I have.   Debit’s convenient, though.

Editing Tutorial ?? Game settings ??

(look at that i finally have the motivation to post this!)

first things first, my game settings are always either these or the default high setting!

Quick Disclaimer: I don’t always do the same thing when I edit! This is a super loose guideline of what I usually do! Sometimes I skip some steps, and sometimes I add some.

Quick Disclaimer II; There are so many amazing people here who edit way better than I do, and I like to watch speed edits, so I’m always looking for strategies that I can use from them! I’m really sorry if you see something thta another person has done and think I’m copying. To me, it’s kinda like gettting inspo if that makes any sense ^^;;

Step 1.

okokok so I usually start with my sim (duh) and I like to make it into a layer,so I can delete the background and just have the sim (I highly reccomend a solid, coloured cas bg because 1. it’s easier to work with and 2. black and white are pains bc they tend to blend into the sim but like whatever floats ur boat)

Once I’ve done that, I crop the photo! I don’t use specific demensions or anything because I’m xtremely unprofessional I just prefer to line the sim up kinda within the column in the middle(???? 2007 best wording award goes to me) I also like closing in on the sim, but leaving a bit of space. (I do this to have a rough idea, I usually go back and recrop it)

Step 2.

Now, once I’ve cropped my sim to my likings, I do some shading. I’ll make a new layer I use this brush.

I’ll draw up some lines in black where shading naturally is (nose, her eyes, jaw, sometimes her mouth) Also, if you want to make it easier for yourself, make new layers for each shading line (So like draw a line on the nose, new layer, eyes, new layer etc.)

Once I’m cool with the shading, I’ll go back and smudge and blurr the lines. I like blurring the eyes and the mouth and smudging the rest! After that, I change the opacity so that it’s not super obvious, but so that it still makes a difference. If you still arent happy, gaussian blur is your best friend

Step 3.

Now, this step is easily skippable, but I actually like to go in and touch up their eyebrows! Make a new layer, and you can just use the eyedropper tool to get the right colour, make it a bit darker than the actual brow, and outline/trace them.

Use the blur tool to soften the lines. They’ll look like this, but you can just go in with an eraser and get rid of the weird colouring around the brow. (no clue why I didn’t screenshot the final product but you’ll see it in later steps)

Step 4,

Next is contouring! I like to use this brush to draw it on, but I’ll usually size it up and down depending on which part of the face I’m on

I’ve made a personal swatch of a colour that I really like to use (because it looks good on a lot of skintones.) I reccomend using something similar to what I use for sims with fair skintones, and something a bit darker for sims with dark skintones.

Make a new layer, then draw out places you want to contour.  Go nuts because if it looks bad, you can just erase it with a soft brush later

Once your contour looks decent, (buckle up and get ready for some really bad terminology!!) change the layer type(??) to multiply! This should make your contour transparent + warm toned

Now, look to the top of your screen and go to filter > blur > gaussian blur and adjust to your hearts content! You should also probably adjust the opacity so it’s not so visible.

(somethin like this idk) From there, do anthing you want to adjust it, I usually go back and erase anthing that looks unnatural and blur out anthing too harsh.

Step 4.5 (it should b step 1 but I forgot to do it earlier i h8 myself)

This is super quick, but if the sim doesn’t have freckles, I like to blur out their forehead, nose, cheeks etc. so it looks super smooth and nice!! (just make sure you go back to the sim’s layer though bc i always forget and I feel rlly stupid i don’t want that for u)

Step 5.

Now we highlight! Chose any super light colour (I use a couple of light coloured swatches that I’ve gathered, but even white works!) and make a new layer. It depends on the sim, but I actually don’t highlight very often. It usually looks too light or artificial to me so just dont bother, but I’m doing it now incase anyones curious c: I just go over the places opposite of where I contoured (t-zone, cheeks, nose bridge and tip chin etc. with the same brush and everything.Then, I change the layer type (like I did with the contour) to overlay, or anything similar.

Then repeat the opacity + blurring steps from contouring

Step 6.

Now that the sim itself is edited, I make the background.I dont always do the same thing, but for now I’m doing a solid background. Make a new layer, and move it so that it’s under the sims’ layer.

I have a bunch of swatches that I’ve downloaded/made to make it a lil easier on myself. I pick a colour from there, then I choose the marquee tool(M) and select a box that’s a little smaller than my sim. Just small enough so a bit of head/arm/hand/whatever is poking out a bit.

Then I crop it again so that it just touches the arm/head.

Step 7.

Here is where most people would use topaz, but I only use it depending on if it looks good on the sim! I didn’t use it on this sim, but if anyone’s curious, I actually made myself an action out of @littlecrisps ‘s settings!
