i don't think it's hard to understand why dean is so upset in late season 14 / early season 15. he has plenty of good reasons, including mary's death and the chuck reveal. but i did want to ponder why he's upset with cas specifically.

i originally saw it as part of a pattern - a straw breaking dean's back, so to speak. that the problem is not really that cas kept his concerns about jack a secret, but more that cas keeps a lot of things secret, even when those secrets put others at risk. more that dean forgives and forgives and pleads with cas to just tell him these things, and cas says he will and/or apologizes but doesn't ever change.

i still believe that pattern is relevant. but when you think about it, the snake is kind of a big deal. even if you don't get into all the things the snake represents regarding jack, the snake is in pain because it experienced a loss (according to jack at least, who is the only one able to communicate with it and may not be a reliable narrator). jack sees it as a mercy to end the snake's life and send it to snake heaven (side note: snake heaven?!). and we could debate the ethics of that that all day long. but from the perspective of dean, who is often in pain and often experiencing loss and does not want people to make choices about his life for him, it probably feels a little different. because if a snake can outlive its usefulness to jack, why can't a person? why can't several people? if jack is trying to end suffering due to loss, why stop at one snake? who's next? is it cas? sam? mary?

and then. it is mary. we have a slightly better idea of why jack killed mary than dean, sam, or cas do. jack says it was an accident (later he calls it a mistake), and it may well have been. but dean, sam, and cas have absolutely no way of knowing. so dean, in deep grief and pain, has to take jack at his word that killing mary was an accident. and then cas tells him he knew about the snake and was worried about jack all along but didn't tell anyone. cas had clear evidence of jack ending a life for no apparent reason. and between cas discovering this and cas revealing this, jack ended another life for no apparent reason. not just a life, but the life of someone he knew and claimed to care for.

i think this raises a lot of questions for dean. what else is cas keeping from him? what else would cas do to protect jack? what happens to those who get in jack's way? and how will cas react then? does jack see value in life, or only in certain lives? if he can't trust cas, who he has intentionally chosen to trust over and over again, then who can he trust? and then chuck shows up and amplifies everything by an indescribably huge magnitude because now dean is asking all these questions while also wondering if any of his life mattered and if his family (especially cas and jack) were just chuck's pawns all along.

it's not all about the snake, but also, it is.

The Eurovision song contest is facing intense scrunity and accusations of discrimination after it rebuked Swedish-Palestinian pop star Eric Saade for wearing a Palestinian scarf in the opening act of the semi-finals. Saade, whose father is of Palestinian origin, kicked off the first semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmo, Sweden on Tuesday evening with a keffiyeh, a traditional Palestinian and Arab male headdress, wrapped around his wrist. Waving Palestinian flags, wearing traditional Palestinian garments, or if we're being honest, just being Palestinian, is now officially "too political" for Eurovision.

Literally, all Saade did was wear a keffiyeh around his wrist—while being Palestinian—and that was enough to get a statement from the EBU, and have his opening performance scrubbed from Youtube.

I think so many people are so deeply alienated from themselves that they have no clue how to exercise their free will and autonomy. For some, this alienation runs so deep that they are afraid of their own autonomy and humanity. It is completely understandable why one would have those feelings, but it can be worrisome.

I want to help others who feel this way, so here are small things I have done to exercise my free will:

Add "guilty pleasure" songs to playlists and actually listen to them (I have a ton of late 1990s-early 2000s music I listen to now proudly that I never listened to in the past out of shame)

Getting the décor item, bath set, bed spread, ect. in the patterns you like, even if it's "childish" (I got a dinosaur-themed wastebasket from the kids' décor section and I adore it)

Taking a new route to get to a place you go to often

Eat dessert first

Celebrate well, and often

Collect things that are "odd" or don't seem like an "acceptable" thing to collect (somebody on my "for you" page collects dandelion crayola crayons and it was so cool!!!!!!)

Incorporate one new piece in an outfit you wear frequently (e.g., a new chain, a necklace, ribbons, bracelets, ect.). Challenge yourself to add onto the outfits if you feel up for it.

Sing along to songs without worrying that you sound "good" or your intonation is completely accurate

Read a book from a genre you weren't allowed to read as a kid (comics, thrillers, mysteries, anything!)

Walk without having a specific destination or goal

Pick up a new craft without expecting yourself to master it or to ever be "good" enough. Get your hands messy.

I don't want to shame anybody for not feeling as though they have free will or that they are exempt from exercising it. However, I wanted to give ideas so that you might read this list and find your own ways to express your intrinsic autonomy and will. You deserve to be a person, to feel alive, not just living. That is what our lives are for.

I think Laios's father represents a version of Laios who never found people who supported him and his interests; someone who was hurt one too many times by his inability to communicate or read social cues, and has fully retracted into himself as a result.

Very similar to Laios, he's grown to prefer the company of beasts over men, and hunts for food as a means of escapism. The only difference is Laios has people to share these interests with, while his father had only his hounds. His description here especially makes him seem not particularly uncaring, just sad and lonely.

This is petty fandom salt, BUT... I've been chewing on this phenomenon that I've been calling "Fandom's Darling". It is related to things like "Author's Darling" and "Mary Sue / Gary Stu" and "Protagonist Halo" and all that jazz, where one character gains a peculiar narrative weight in a story.

"Author's Darling" is when a writer has a favorite character, and the world and all other characters sort of get... warped to put the Darling in the spotlight. It's most noticeable in TV shows with multiple writers, when a character you personally like suddenly has their previous characterization destroyed to make another character look good somehow. Every other character might become weirdly incompetent. The Darling's feelings are treated as The Most Important Feelings in any given situation. The logic of the fictional world seems broken past suspension of disbelief in order to validate this one character's beliefs or skillset or some other fantasy. And so on.

"Fandom's Darling" is what I've been calling the pattern where a fandom essentially crowns a New Protagonist for their fanfiction stories (it's often a side character rather than the original protagonist, but it can also happen to protagonists). This character becomes the self-insert for all sorts of indulgent fantasies, gaining special powers or backstories, and/or becoming the focus of extreme whump, and/or hooking up with all the various hotties, starring in all sorts of tropey AUs, and so on. They're not always an obvious Mary Sue version of themselves, but the character's original personality and interpersonal relationships tend to get warped or dropped completely, and other characters tend to become a little flat around them. I call it "Fandom's Darling" because it's not just one self-indulgent fantasy fic (you do you! Have fun!) with characterization choices that I don't vibe with (I have neither the time nor the desire nor the authority to police anything, I am just venting), but rather a prolific mini-fandom of sorts revolving around this empty doll / fanon version of the chosen vessel character, so it becomes a little unavoidable.

I am salty about this (mildly frustrated) (imagine a soft sigh of disappointment before I just go do something else) because you are FUCKED if you actually liked the canonical version of this character and their interpersonal relationships. It's almost worse than liking an obscure character that no one cares about. There's about a thousand fics starring your fave, but maybe only about a dozen of them are actually rooted in any kind of recognisable canon.

There's a lot I could say about The Subtance as an unflinching, gruesome close-up portrait of systemic misogyny, internalized sexism, self-hatred, and the brutality of fame, but more importantly, you know what I bet? I bet there is exactly one customer of The Subtance who is doing everything right. Week one, makes a living as a fitness influencer; week two, enjoys a lavish retirement funded by her other self's earnings. Week one, jogging, yoga, filming tiktoks, enjoying the vitality of youth; week two, Alaskan cruises, mahjong with the girls, enjoying unlimited free time and liberation from the crushing weight of the societal expectation to care what other people think of you. Keeps her other self on a nice air mattress with a quilt and always cooks a big recovery breakfast to be waiting for her when she switches. Walks out of that creepy alley every week whistling. Has no idea potential complications even exist. Every other user is living a psychedelic horror show of trauma, goop, and rage, and she's just at Barnes and Noble picking up the latest selection for book club. I know I'm alone in this, but I would happily watch that sequel.
