some early and candid thoughts on MASH: The Comedy that Changed Television
I thought Gary Burghoff had the most illuminating commentary to offer. he was specific, technical and detailed when recounting how the show was constructed, a style of media commentary that caters to my preferences. he has one comment that really stuck with me as a strong descriptor of the Radar character (paraphrase from memory): they needed a character who was experiencing the concept of war for the first time, for whom you could see the
after Burghoff, I thought Jamie Farr had some interesting things to say re: Margaret - 'she contains multitudes' being one of them, and a recurring theme when everyone was speaking about the character
i have to talk about mike farrell's comment on anti-war vs. anti-military: i've talked about how I feel that the post-reynolds/gelbart years have heavily watered-down messaging re: war before, and i've pointed to several episodes where i feel this is obvious, but mike farrell saying (quite strongly) that he felt the show was anti-war but never anti-military is pretty damning evidence.
i mean, i think this is good characterization for BJ, to take a more, let's call it 'broadly', anti-war stance, rather than be opposed specifically to military, particularly to the US military. it fits with his aspirations to live a quiet, middle-class life, with his insistence that he's always done 'the right thing' and imo, a good motivation for him to butt heads with the more radical Hawkeye, who opposes authority figures in general (per Alan Alda himself in this same special) - which actually goes beyond the military...
so i love it for BJ but i hate it for a show that never framed him as being wrong about that idea specifically. i can't say for sure whether BJ always held Farrell's beliefs of course, or vice versa, but if BJ ever did oppose the military as a system, Farrell doesn't know it. this knowledge makes episodes like Preventative Medicine and Back Pay land even worse with me.
'some of us were IN the military' he added, as a justification for his point that the show could not have been anti-establishment which i would speak on even more candidly if i was going to make this unrebloggable lol. but truly it's not that serious except in terms of how i think about the themes of this show - he seems like a perfectly lovely person who really loved making MASH and i think his fans will enjoy watching him speak about that.
Mclean Stevenson makes a point about how what Radar anticipates about a character tells us something about that character beyond what we would receive if we just heard the character say it themselves (which they usually do, at the same time as Radar) - I need to think about this some more when re-watching those scenes...
dlfkjaljfk I've never heard David Ogden Stiers' natural voice I thought someone was giving commentary over footage of him and then i realized he was actually giving the commentary - I feel like everyone knows this, but he was immensely talented, a master of voice and speech
1 hour and 10 minutes (including ads, or 'commercial breaks' as we used to call them back in my day) spent on seasons 1-3. tbf there's character-specific commentary in the first half that is for characters that were with us for the whole run, but, there's also a lot of time devoted to talking about how the show was initially constructed, the pilot being good (correct), and something that made me smirk - Larry Gelbart's commentary on how people were incensed and outraged at Henry's death and felt they had been misled, lied to, about their funny haha, wholesome weeknight comedy (set in the Korean War???) is almost indistinguishable from how people talk about plots they don't like in media nowadays
it was good! i had fun!
#re: mash#idk about uploading the whole thing because tbh the audio is pretty bad but i'll try to do a few gifs

Hold on ,,, i kinda fell out of the fandom a while ago
Is Tervo canon now?? Like... earnest canon? Not just in that limbo between homophobic jokes and queerbaiting but like... Actual committed, loving relationship that they're both working on and they don't just sometimes kiss for laughs?
Because in that case i might start watching again
(I fell off just before the christmas special)
OH BOY ANON YOU JUST ACTIVATED MY AUTISM
So the short answer is yes though not 100% and I understand if that’s not what you’re looking for but if you have time you can listen to me go off:
So they pretty much do everything except stare directly at the audience and announce that their in a relationship but the show pretty much tells us they’re in relationship
We’ll start with the Christmas Special since you stopped there.
There’s only one “tervo” scene where Terry reveals he’s been practicing punching for Korvo’s Christmas present and they share a kiss which is the best kiss we’ve gotten from them.
It’s very sweet
Now onto s3
I’m linking my own video if you want to watch the scenes yourself but don’t worry I’m gonna break into them: link to video
There’s a lot of little things through out the season the word “husband” is thrown around a lot, in episode 2 Terry refers to Korvo as babe a personal fave of mine. There’s also huge implications they’re having sex with each other which you know helps.
The main episodes with the biggest Tervo moments are episode 3 The Pupas Big Day and episode 8 The Cubic Lattice Crystallizer
The Pupa’s Big Day features jealous Korvo in the best possible way (this is my personally favorite episode in the series by the way)
I don’t want to ruin the episodes for you but Terry is buddy buddy with a new character and it drives Korvo crazy. In the end the episode ends with with this line:
Tervo for the soul
The Cubic Lattice Crystallizer starts well with this:
After the fam goes on vacation and a few shenanigans happens until Terry and Korvo end up a museum of betrayals which features an animatronic of Korvo getting banged by Chris the red goobler
This sets off Terry who shows quite a bit a jealousy from the situation I’m not going to show it cause of tumblr’s nsfw rules but the animatronic says something along the lines
“I’m coming harder than I do with Terry”
The final scene I want to talk about come from the season finale The Fog of Pupa. Ms. Frankie reveals the cunnilingus Korvo gave her in the s2 finale and Terry give him this look:
It’s just screams Terry’s pissed at Korvo for this but why would he be if they weren’t in a relationship??
Outside that we have the Halloween special where it’s revealed Korvo gave Terry bj coupons for Valentines Day
Cute
Also found this excerpt article with Mike McMahan (here’s a link for the entire article)
In the s4 preview (youtube link) Terry pretty much is the sole reason Korvo is British now because it made him horny, he also calls Korvo sweetie in the clip.
We also have a Valentines episode to look forward too which a lot of people are speculating a tervo wedding as “something big” is suppose to happen to two characters hmmm…..
So are they in a relationship? I like to think so but I’m also autistic and a little insane and I eat up all the scraps they give me. Maybe I’m delusional but i feel there’s a ton of evidence here. If you think this is just queerbait material I understand but I think it’s pretty clear they’re in love with each other. Either way I can't wait for s4 and more tervo content for me to tear into and analyze the death.
Anyway thanks for sticking with me here and I hope this answered your question!

HI SHAN!!! since I’ve been thinking about late seasons Beej lately, how do you think he would handle his return home from the war?
HI BABY
Oh man. Hitting me with the good and difficult stuff right from the start.
I don't think BJ deals well with returning from Korea, and I don't think he actively does anything to help himself.
I've often wondered about this, and always come back around to the idea that BJ's entire world view has been flipped upside down and bled all over. Mike said it best when he said that "if [BJ] continued to do his best to give of himself to people in need... that it would be somehow serving his wife and daughter as well. And at the end, he'd be able to go home with his head held high." so the question really becomes... did BJ go home with his head held high?
I don't think he believed he could, and because of that he struggles from the day he gets home until... who knows when.
I don't think he becomes a drunken shell of a man. I don't think he becomes outwardly angry or cold or totally unrecognizable - but I do think his worst traits have been exacerbated and he struggles to learn with how to deal with them. I think he struggles with how to reconcile with which came first: was he always like this and having his entire world view flipped upside down and bled all over - against his will - brought it out of him OR was having his entire world view flipped upside down, bled all over and repeatedly challenged - against his will - the reason he is the way he is now? It's a chicken and the egg thing, and I think for someone like BJ (tries - and yes sometimes fails - to maintain some level of rationality) that is an impossible thing to accept and live with. Something has to be first. Something has to be to used to explain. Something has to be put to blame.
I think for a long time, BJ struggles with trying to figure out who he was before Korea, who he wanted to be during Korea, and who he is after Korea - and how are all three of those BJs him?
I think he also just really struggles with acclimating to the sense of "normalcy" that he left behind. Little things like dishes being in a different cabinet, new pictures on the wall, a new toothbrush, being able to come and go as he please ("Ag, you know what I am? I'm a prisoner of war.") and really wrestling with seeing actual physical proof that life went on without him. The Hunnicutt household did not implode in his absence, but that doesn't mean he wasn't needed or missed or wanted. But so much of his self worth seems wrapped up in the idea he needs to be needed - that stepping foot into a home where everyone is healthy, the gutters are clean, and everything is satisfactory... cannot be easy for him.
Does any of that makes sense???
#pomegranate#I'm not allowing this to be reblogged because I get really uncomfortable with putting these sort of things just out there#but I did ask for it so whatever jokes on me

i am SO interested in you saying will was the first of them to give head. can you elaborate in terms of how this could potentially play out in the show? it would certainly be more steroeotypically 'gay' and 'dirty' by media standards to show a blowjob than them having full sex, but i feel like it also could work practically - rushed for time, end of the world, etc - but also as a first stop in teen experimentation, a way for one person to instigate rather than both already being on the same page... it would also be very easy to film offscreen and oral sex is something audiences are used to seeing so it may be considered more palatable and tasteful somehow, easier to pass with the execs you know?
plus that classic symbolism from s1 where will has the vine in his mouth. could well be a symbol of his gay thoughts and fears but it could also be reprised with an actual blowjob... i can totally imagine will sliding out of shot and them focusing on mike's reactions in some sort of artfully low-lit scene, lots of shadow and rich mellow light
To speak honestly, I really don't think we'd get any sort of simulated scene of a blowjob in the show. I mean, it's honestly one of the easier types of sex acts to depict while implying something so specific and yet still being able to pan away and not show anything graphic. A flash of a character falling to their knees. Or showing one character lying on a bed, scene shot from the side and we only see them from the waist up but their eyes are shut closed, mouth open back arching, like you mentioned. Or many other angles and positioning and camera work. I don't really think the show would do this though? I think a potential sex scene might be more vague for them.
Showing a blowjob is definitely more explicitly gay even more so than them falling into bed with very non-descript shots in there to portray intimacy of some kind, but not really showing what they're for sure doing, where instead you can imagine the off-screen antics as intricately or blankly as you want. I think a BJ or something does make more sense for the characters themselves, because it would honestly be laughable to me, if in some crazy world there is a non-fade to black Byler sex scene, like oh wow they are going to actually fuck each other here, sure thing, this is happening right here in this tv show. First kiss and first time all in several minutes of screen time, confirming for sure that the DBs are absolutely not gay or bi men and who let them get away with this? Hahaha
Otherwise, in fandomland where my imagination runs and considers different timelines and situations about their relationship - I do tend to portray Will as the first one to slide on downtown. I just think he'd have wanted to do it for much longer and he's so curious. I think he's desperate to see all of Mike and it's almost a way to, how to word this, express his desire at his own pace? It's going to be something for Mike's pleasure but it's for Will, too? You like men, you know you like men and their bodies and this is an undeniable part of the male body you've been thinking about and coming to terms with desiring. And now this is a reality. Do you actually like dick - oh, yeah. You do. This is blatant now. Men are it. Not that Mike can't have this sort of journey, but I've mentally given them different approaches to their sexuality and this is what I've landed on for Will.
And so - you're down there now, you're choosing to give this, controlling what's happening. Making out, you were both active participants. Grinding together, or even a handjob you're probably lying close, faces near each other even if your hands are otherwise occupied. It's different, the first time you go down on someone. Obviously that's the person you're with, that's their body. But, it's an isolated point of focus, at least for a moment. You're choosing to put your mouth on someone, take them in. We're talking about two people who care about each other and are actively engaged in exploring this type of a sexual relationship together. Some view blowjobs as an entirely submissive act for the giver. It can be, in certain contexts and settings and it can be a positive, consensual form of submission, or not so much with an asshole partner ☹️ It can be entirely neutral, too, like most sex. There are many times I've viewed them as quite the opposite. The person on their knees has so much of the power. It can be a mental trip, being in sole control of giving someone pleasure like that. And the first time - the first time you go down on someone and it's a little terrifying and scary exciting, and you look up and make eye contact and they're looking at you with this expression. Especially if they've never received one? Man. It can be magic. And I want that for these two boys 😜
#I kinda ran away from the original topic with this but oh well!! Can you blame me!! Hey what do you think my favorite sex act is and oh man#I am saying so many things. Yikes. Sometimes I should not have access to a computer and a forum for unfiltered thoughts.#This is definitely uhhh spicy#🤭🤣🤭🤣#asks#queued#hc

Was thinking about what you said about the likelihood BJ never sees any of them / Hawkeye again, and besides the very interesting cocktail of emotions that idea makes me feel (agreement and denial at war, essentially), it inevitably got me thinking about the Trapper & BJ comparison again.
I think about BJ calling out, I'll see you in the states, I promise! and the smile he wears. and I think the reason it hits so hard is bc in the moment when he says it, he absolutely does mean it? the flush of emotion in those big life moments can make everything seem undeniable e.g. "you mean a lot to me, so of course we will see each other again". but ofc people don't live in those big life moments.
it's so easy to envision BJ finding a way to integrate Korea into the greater lie that is his life (easier to do when it's over, in the past and subject to whatever framing he chooses to give it). the truth he can't face in the moment of goodbye is that it really IS goodbye, that Korea-as-it-was and Hawkeye do not fit in the life he told himself he burned to get back to.
(Hawkeye was so tired, I got the impression he implicitly understood all this about BJ and wearily accepted it even though it hurt -- another way GFA knocked me down; sometimes people are not as strong for the people they love as they'd hope, and sometimes you just have to accept that it's going to hurt and there's nothing to be done.)
With Trapper, I think it is also very likely he never sees Hawkeye again, or at least not for a very long time. But I don't think he ever lied to himself about it; he seemed like a "ripping the bandaid" type. the pain of not seeing hawkeye again is one he is willing to confront and accept (and inflict?)
(...apologies, this didn't end up being as coherent as I'd hoped, I sat down with coffee on my break and started rambling in your inbox lol)
OK FRIEND WE ARE HERE WE ARE QUEER WE ARE (STILL SICK AND RUMINATING OVER YOUR WORDS BUT I GOT ABOUT FIVE HOURS SLEEP LAST NIGHT BUT I THINK THAT BRINGS OUT MY BEST RAMBLES SO!)
"I think the reason it hits so hard is bc in the moment when he says it, he absolutely does mean it" <- oh heck yes, BJ is -- to me -- the character on this show who faces all of this experience the least, including the bits that, despite everything, were good. he's got that increasingly at-odds-with-his-outbursts genial type of "everything will be fine" attitude right up until the last moment we see him.
something about the best lies are the ones we believe ourselves and the things he's going to be slapped in the face with when he gets home, despite knowing that it's not the home he left (also do we think he shaves off the moustache, yay or nay? if he does, I put that down to the commitment to put on the "nice young husband/father/veteran/doctor/community man" man again, for better or for worse, but if he keeps it, I'll assume it's his one concession, because I doubt he'll actually properly talk about anything).
Trapper was weary and pragmatic and (correctly) pessimistic way back in ceasefire (although he allowed Hawkeye to be hopeful for the most part, I like the read that Trapper tries very hard to not bring Hawkeye down, but occasionally how he really feels just slips out), not to mention the way he talked in mail call.
Who was it that said Trapper's speech about the war in mail call is basically Hawkeye's journey's-end by s11, because um... ouch.
I just watched my first Mike Farrell interview yesterday (the first interview I've seen with any cast member except for Alan Alda, and it was very emotional, but at least I didn't tear up as Mr Farrell himself did!) in which he said that he imagines they'll see each other at least once again, and that BJ would "walk across America" to see him -- but then he also added that it wouldn't be same, which was quite a sad little amendment to what until that point seemed like his personal BJ/Hawkeye is end-game headcanon.
Whether or not BJ and Hawkeye do see each other again (and purely geographically, there's a higher chance of Hawkeye bumping into Trapper, especially considering the fact that Charles is in Boston and I like the idea of Charles and Hawkeye getting surprisingly close after the war -- surprising to them of course, they have more in common than they'd admit!) I would love to know (but would be afraid to ask) Mr Farrell what he feels about how they left things, and how that might play into one or two odd reunions.
I've gone deep down a rabbit-hole of thinking about all of this in terms of BJ's issues (and Hawkeye's issues -- I say this over and over again, but was BJ wrong when he felt like he was Trapper's replacement, and to rage against the box he'd been put into that didn't really allow him his own personhood. On a meta sense, if Hawkeye knows they're in a haunted narrative, then BJ specifically is aware that he is Trapper's shadow and he doesn't like it! and I don't think it helped with everything else that was going on) and so the idea of fluffy mutually healing BJ and Hawkeye doesn't really gel with me, because they've hurt each other -- and BJ has really hurt Hawkeye, sometimes in very pointed, somewhat vindictive-seeming ways -- a lot!
But would BJ romanticize it in his head after he got back and real life there got hard to handle (as I imagine it will for him)? Would he smooth out the rough parts and -- who knows -- create outright lies to fix things (in which BJ Hunnicutt creates the ultimate AU) -- he and Hawkeye were the best of friends after all, and he says in their last scene that he doesn't know how he would have made it without him (I cannot go back and look at the wording, I cannot go back and look at that episode yet, I'm not strong enough!) so he's not wrong when he remembers just how important Hawkeye was to him.
The ways in which Hawkeye at times becomes a kind of stand-in for Peg (or, that is, the wife that BJ has in Korea -- I said this in another post, but I want to reiterate that I use "wife" deliberately, because I hc BJ veering wildly between acting with Hawkeye as his male best friend, and BJ treating Hawkeye like his put-upon spouse, because he's just... real fucked up about his actual wife, but then also at times they're a gay couple), versus the idea that Peg could start to be the butt of comparisons to Hawkeye?
I'd have to think about that one some more, now I've just written it. It depends on the Flavour of post-war fucked up BJ.
Anyway, Mike... Mike, care to go into detail about it not being the same? Do you think BJ will be able to live a life of benignly empty oppressive polite middle-class heterosexual suburbia after all of this? Would he just... carry on, living the dream (the dream here being used as in a literal sense that he builds the fantasy to cope)?
#bj hunnicutt#MASH#goes on the *saddest version of events* musing because i like it#also as i am being reminded: bj was fresh out of residency when he was drafted... he's not that old#he was doing it all Right and By The Book and now he has to reconsider the whole fabric of his life off the back of continuous trauma#(and a possible gay awakening depending on how you take him and hawkeye -- i tend to go the *it's complicated* route#because queerness was never quite so simple as being or not being gay -- but it was certainly an awakening of Some kind=#)#long post#MASH meta#goodbye farewell and amen#ive watched MASH

I want to jump in and ask, logistically, how are you envisioning this happening in the writers' room if it's purposeful? Not as a gotcha, rather, I want to understand what's being suggested as a likelihood in the late 70s/early 80s media landscape, wrt how the people behind the scenes viewed the show.
So for BJ's moustache for example, if it was deliberately a gay reference, do you think it was an inside joke amongst the writers, people jokingly saying he looks like a fag eg? Or one or two gay writers suggesting it because they're into the look themselves, or they're drawing on their experiences with fashion, or they just enjoy inserting gay references into stuff they work on? Or was the moustache just suggested neutrally for the reasons given, but Mike Farrell decided on a particularly gay style of moustache? If the latter, do you think Mike Farrell saw BJ as gay or bi, regardless of his whole marriage thing, or was it more like a deliberate nod for his gay friends but otherwise meaningless, or just for fun? Or maybe he had a gay stylist on set who drew on his own experiences?
I guess those are more rhetorical questions lol since it could be any/all of the above, and no one will ever know for sure except the people involved. But I am curious what you think in terms of deliberate choices being made, especially since you watched it as it aired and have more first hand experience with the cultural landscape at the time.
I know there was a push for actual gay representation very briefly in the mid 70s that amounted to nothing, but even if it had gone somewhere I'm assuming that it would've been in the form of more one off guest stars or recurring side characters/secondary cast members with no love interests, not a push for the leads of a popular show to come out. I also know at least one gay man wrote a letter to Mike Farrell thanking him for Hawkeye and BJ's GFA hug, probably not because it was gay representation on the downlow, but more because men being physically affectionate (and emotionally vulnerable) is itself valuable to gay viewers, particularly in the 80s.
But that said people did joke about it, people were aware of gay interpretations and homoeroticism, plenty of gay people worked in Hollywood. That awareness is all over Starsky and Hutch's production, eg, in a mix of homophobic jokes (and probably non-homophobic jokes depending on your bar for homophobia, eg I don't think actors pretending to make out during a flubbed take is inherently homophobic) and genuine gay influence/nods to gay fans. So it's entirely probable that aspects of Mash were deliberately homoerotic, gay, gay coded, etc, beyond the Very Special Gay Episode, and it's not just an accident of jokes and counterculture influence.
But it's not something that ever gets discussed in media or film academia or interviews with cast and crew etc as far as I've ever seen, unlike with Starsky and Hutch, so I feel like I have less to go on, and I want to know what you (or anyone else who sees this tbh) think.
you know we’re all rational adults: there’s no way we all hallucinated gay mash narrative out of nothing
#mash#marley on mash#mash gs#no pressure to respond at length though i just have a lot of thoughts on this particular subject lol

‘Merican who wanted to emigrate until all the great disability schemes over there went bye-bye about a year before we’re lost it too…
are there any good PMs that can come out of this (a vote of no confidence), or is it like how we would have gotten Mike Pence the evangelical AIDS denying robot as president?
(I spent 2019 trying to get that in peoples heads)(he calls his wife mother that is canon!)(that said for a hot second it could’ve be pelosi and when i tell you i don’t use chef’s kiss lightly….)
I mean, the short answer is no. The Tories are, one and all, morally repugnant and appalling wastes of human skin, so the choice is basically to look at their top trumps stats and go 'Would I prefer more evil but too incompetent to enact most of it? Or less evil but competent enough to enact it?'
My husband and I actually disagree on whether Tessie May or Big Dog is worse to deal with. For me, the perils of Big Dog come down to the cult of personality, which were never going to last forever and is now crumbling dramatically. Ultimately, he has always been an inept and bumbling ham. Incompetent and stupid doesn't begin to cover it. His politics are worse than hers, yes, but he's unable to enact the worst of it, or indeed a lot of it.
Whereas May is intelligent and competent and even when she was widely hated by the whole country AND the party, she still managed to get shit done. And unlike BJ, who believes in himself and just wants the adulation, she believes in the party, and what they stand for. A true believer.
So, the long answer, on picking a successor now... Christ, who to choose? I mean from my perspective, I want the Tory Civil War to extend right into the next general election. I want a series of clowns each used as a scapegoat by the others until Labour just forward roll their way into power. Hard to know who would do that best.
I think the most likely four in the running are:
Rishi Sunak reminds me of David Cameron. He delivers speeches that make people say things like 'I don't like Tories, but he did very well', which is a slippery slope (although he's also face-clawingly embarrassing at PR visits). He personally caused 8-17% more COVID infection clusters with the Eat Out to Help Out scheme, and he has openly and provably given billions of pounds of COVID money to his friends and family, and he's mega super corrupt. BUT, Tory voters will not want a brown Hindu man as PM, and it's interesting how the Telegraph straight up reported that his 'the PM's tax' comment was a distancing maneuver from his own unpopular work. I suspect they don't want him either.
Liz Truss is a very realistic option? She's an awful libertarian who has the charisma of a tea towel that you got wet and put in a cupboard and now it's not dried and the kitchen smells. Minister for Women and Equalities who hates identity politics and cancelling people and thinks misogyny should not be a hate crime. She loves selling weapons to Saudi Arabia and has even broken international law to do so. Watching her try to appeal to the youth is an exercise in learning the true meaning of 'cringe'. And, you know, Tory voters hate women and love scapegoating them, plus she's been BJ's best mate for a while, so... there's that.
Uh, let's think... Dominic Raab. Current Deputy PM. Human boil. So far his evil has been obscured by Big Dog's, but honestly I think the cabinet crumbles within a month if it's him - and here's the thing! We're going to get him at least briefly anyway. As Deputy, if BJ goes, either by resignation or by vote of no confidence, Raab takes over until a new leader is elected. It will be very funny.
And, last but by no means least, Michael Gove, a national laughing stock who looks like someone tried to play dress up with their biggest toe. He's a walking disaster. He's incompetent in the extreme. He's best summed up by my favourite political comic of all time, which is this classic from 2016:
It's just so accurate. So honest. It strikes so completely to the heart of the man.
So, I hope it's him, but honestly... No good choices.

What is the context for BJ walking to Maine? I love it but am new here and don't know where it came from
Aw Anon, I don't know why you came to me but I'm glad you did.
There's a few ways to interpret this ask, so I hope you don't mind if accidentally explain something you already know.
If you're talking about the general concept of BJ Going to Maine, that is a sort of shortcut people who ship Hawkeye and BJ like to use to describe BJ working out that he wants to pursue a romantic relationship with Hawkeye post-war, and travelling the distance from Mill Valley to Crabapple Cove to make that a reality. I'm being purposely broad with my language here cos the variations in how this happens are pretty vast, which you will discover if you dive into the fanfiction.
Ofc one variation of this is how exactly BJ gets to Maine, and if you are asking literally where the idea of him walking to Maine came from, while I'm sure it existed before this, one major bit of context for this idea is that Mike Farrell himself said BJ Hunnicutt would walk to Maine to spend time with Hawkeye (skip to about 1:21:54 for the relevant bit). I wasn't in the fandom when this historical moment happened, but I gather few fans who like the whole idea have really truly recovered yet. This is lovely anyway, but ofc shippers like to run with it. Can you blame us.
NOW if you're asking for context as to why any of this is remotely appealing... I have some ideas.
Imo the concept of BJ Goes to Maine is so important because, to many, having BJ be the one to make this journey is key to a believable lasting relationship between the two, because it is about BJ making the effort. Not only do people find fault in his treatment of Hawkeye at points in the show - or at the very least an imbalance in their relationship - but also he is the one with a wife and kids and a life he needs to work out how to change. In travelling to Maine, he is bridging the physical AND metaphorical gaps between them, actively choosing to disrupt that 'perfect' life he so desperately clung to in the war... The 3000+ miles he has to traverse is representative of the vast amount of work he has to do within himself and beyond to be worthy of Hawkeye's love, and to stay that way for as long as possible.
For many I think it serves as a sort of pilgrimage. It's about BJ putting himself at Hawkeye's mercy. It's about showing Hawkeye how much he is loved. And he would walk it if he had to.
#hawkeye x bj#mash analysis#beejhawk#bj goes to maine#mash#i tried to keep this spoiler free just in case#also sorry i typed this at 6am#i tried to keep it short but tbh i think i failed#i hope this answers everything anyway#but feel free to reach out! off anon if you like!#are my use of exclamation points too alarming!#im trying to seem non threatening!!!#helen speaks#my mash#anon ask#ask

☕️☕️ bj hunnicutt
i hate that man i hate him. I hate him. i hate him with my entire being. i see him and i just want to bite down on his neck and kick him to death like cats when they hate one toy in particular. he is like a catnip mouse. to me. he's so... specifically not even that interesting. until mike farrell gets his claws in there. like this is the most boring man on the planet but just below the surface there's something clinically insane about him and i have never respected and feared an actor more.
he's the blueprint. the man of all time. if he was my doctor i'd die on purpose just so he'd feel bad about it. his character arc really truly honestly makes me want to eat glass. sometimes i see him on my screen and i can feel myself getting acid reflux. he is giving me an ulcer i am becoming trapper coded due to his existence.
i cant even like... separate bj as a concept from bj as a man bc i'm like this man is real and he haunts me daily. like, literally daily. i have a trading card of him in my phone case.
when people who are not me hate on bj for any reason i get so mad and need to block them sometimes bc i'm like you don't GET IT. you don't KNOW HIM. but then ppl are like bj has never done anything wrong in his life and im like are we watching the same show that man is a menace and i am sick of the sight of him i am beating him up as we speak.
um also i think he's hot unfortunately and i hate that he's so tall like for why. For what reason

#also it's interesting and kinda funny to me that everyone's response to my tags was ''oh they must not know about mandatory service''#instead of ''oh they must have very strong beliefs about the evils of the US military and clearly are of the opinion#that it is every US citizen's moral imperative to refuse to participate in this tool of imperalist aggression#even if it requires great personal hardship''#which is not actually something I personally believe in the context of draftees from way before the internet age#whose ability to be or even become politically aware in this way was of course extremely limited#but it is something some people believe! especially on a platform with the political demographics of this site lol#definitely shows the more centrist-skewing affects of being in a fandom for a show like this; which is interesting to me! @charlesemersonwinchesteriii
You don't need to apologize for the tags, but I do want to respond to these:
I have seen people on this website be unaware of the draft before. The demographic of this website skews young and most people have a post-9/11, "war on terror" era idea of how the military works. Also, I don't think it's widely known that there was mandatory service even in between wars. I also wasn't sure if you were American, and don't make a policy of assuming everyone on the internet knows about American history!
I think characterizing the consequences of draft-dodging as "great personal hardship" is a bit simplistic. First, it's important to understand that the Vietnam era, great personal hardship could mean fleeing the country and not being able to return home, going to prison, etc. Secondly, it's not actually that simple, because an individual avoiding the draft did not end the draft. One of my professors in college avoided the draft by purposely failing the physical, and he told us he knew someone else went because he didn't. Some people had access to options like what BJ's friend's father offered him and less privileged people generally didn't.
People were absolutely politically aware before the internet, and some opposed mandatory military service, but it was normalized. I also think it's worth remembering that the MASH cast was part of the generation that grew up during WWII and that had a significant effect on public opinion (which also comes up during MASH).
I knew your tags were a joke, but I still wanted to clarify for you or anyone else that it wasn't a choice. (Except in Mike's case, and I'm not sure whether he would have had to serve at some point anyway.) I'd also like to remind everyone that it was illegal for gay people to serve in the military. Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't Pursue was passed in the 1990s. Before that, the military was allowed to actively look for gay service members.
I'm just putting things in historical context, and I imagine the people reblogging it found that context interesting. Personally I'm really fascinated by how the looming presence of the draft affected young men between the 40s and the 70s. The draft was also utilized by the government to suppress the Civil Rights movement; local draft boards would bump up people who moved south for the Freedom Summer. The U.S. is unlikely to reinstate the draft for a variety of reasons. I support abolishing the selective service, though there isn't a particularly robust movement to do it.
Perhaps there is a centrist skewing in the fandom, but the show doesn't deserve that. The early seasons that were made when the Vietnam War was still going on are incredibly critical of the U.S. military and U.S. policy. Larry Gelbart did that on purpose. People called MASH the "commie hour."
I hope I don't come across as mad, I'm just passionate about this era of history.
BJ looks so much more natural in class As than Hawkeye does and I think this reflects the actors’ respective attitudes towards their real life military service.

『 Backstory 』
➵ Any TWs? :
➵ Subtle Mentions of Transphobia.
➵ Beau Romano - his deadname being Bianca - was born a year after his older sister, Faye. He lived with his semi-wealthy parents, Camilia and Dylan Romano in Manitoba.
When he was in second grade, Beau began to have a big sprout of creativity. He had drawn pictures of people and anthropomorphic animals, and create small little tales about these people/animals he has drawn. He Drew more and more of these as time slowly passed, and he enjoyed telling stories about these drawings. This had grown into a hobby, and something he enjoyed thoroughly.
His older sister came out when she was nine that she felt like a girl and that she was attracted to girls. Now, their parents are very accepting people and proceeded to assist and support Faye - who was formerly known as Lovino - get what she needed to transition.
Beau happily cheered on his big sister on, supporting her and showering her with love. He celebrated her transitions and her relationships happily, happy that he had such a prideful older sister.
By the time Beau was ten, he had begun to experiment with his sexuality by feeling some weird way towards a guy in music class. He talked with this guy more and more, and these feelings continued to grow.
After a couple of weeks, he felt the same way towards a girl in music class too. The feeling for the boy stayed, but now he had feelings for a boy and a girl.
One day, while walking to school with his mom, he heard two girls behind him talking about the people they liked. One of the girls had said that she was Bisexual, to which little Beau tugged on his mother's sleeve and asked what "Bisexual" meant. The woman explained that it was when someone liked two or more genders.
Beau put that into thought, and not even a minute later, he exclaimed "I'm Bisexual!"
His mom smiles and ruffled her son's - then daughter's - head. While Beau was still a kid, and she thought that Beau didn't know what he was talking about, the boy knew exactly what he was talking about.
Those feelings of the boy and girl faded over time. When Beau was twelve, he had fallen for another person. There had been this really cute girl in class who enjoyed drawing, and boy, what a talented artist she is.
Slowly, but surely, Beau began to fall in love with this girl, and spent time with her. Months went by, and the two had fallen in love.
The girl had confessed to Beau, which he accepted.
These two were a great, healthy Lesbian couple at the time. They were both very happy and loving. Beau had welcomed his girlfriend into the family, to which they welcomed with open arms.
The relationship lasted for two years until they fell out of love. The spark was gone. Their breakup wasn't nasty - they awkwardly stated that they lost that romantic spark on both sides. Beau had turned thirteen at the time. Beau and his ex-lover are on good terms to this day.
Once puberty hit, Beau looked at the body he had at the moment. He didn't quite fit with how it was. It made him feel like he didn't fit in a girl's body. He wanted to cut off his developing melons. So, he decided to talk to Faye later that evening, whom had fully transitioned. She was a beautiful woman. As he talked to her about what had been up, Faye stated that Beau could be Transgender, and even gave him a few articles on Gender Dysphoria.
Weeks of looking into gender identities later, Beau took the label "Trans Male" and used it to describe himself. With encouragement from Faye, he came out to his parents, who accepted him. He didn't want to transition as quickly as Faye, and wanted to take it slow. Testosterone and binding first.
As he grew older, Beau got bullied for being a Transgender Bisexual man. He was experiencing Transphobia from a few of his fellow peers. He knew that not everyone would accept him for being who he was, but this hurt quite a bit. Being bullied for this wasn't fair - he had every right to express himself! - but nooo, people were idiots.
His love for writing had grown more and more over the years. He began to write little stories that he presented in school and posted online. People loved his little stories. Whether they were fanfiction or characters and universes he had created in his head, they received a lot of positive feedback. Sure, there were haters, bullies, trolls, and rude people in general, but Beau didn't pay attention to them too much.
Beau had gotten top surgery when he was fifteen. He had been on testosterone for a year, and he had been binding for that time being. He loved his new, flat chest. Sure, he would have a scar on his chest from the surgery, but it didn't really bother him. He was happy that his tibbies were deleted. Now he could feel like a guy somewhat.
During the time passed from fourteen and fifteen years old, Beau had been watching a show known as "Total Drama" with Faye. The show was appealing to the young teen. The risky challenges were entertaining, most of the cast was likable, and it was really entertaining for the young boy. He'd talk about joining the show every now and then and would think about what his label or cliche would be on the show.
Timeskip to now, Beau and Faye are sixteen and seventeen respectively. After watching an ad to audition for the next season of Total Drama, Faye looked over at her little brother.
"Hey... You should audition to be on there!"
Beau, liking the idea, auditioned for the show. Once his audition was seen, Beau was invited to be on a season of Total Drama.

Is assholes pay and they got tunnels all over and they're pumping them out into their yards and people going to see it from satellite you're going in the plant charges they fill it and they blow it to break it tons of them are hit mostly Trump some of it is Jason but he knows he can't get there
Half of the tunnels were gone in a few minutes the other half in about an hour and we're going to make damn sure
Tommy f is doing most of it and Trump was encouraging him to critically injure our son and Tommy at the shot Trump 50 times in the past 3 months five times in the head
Thor Freya is laughing we don't find that to be humorous in any case I don't we don't know why that would be funny probably because you're a moron
Olympus
Leave it alone you fat prick and get out of there and he says no they're a couple of events downtown and they want to keep them away from them we're busy feeling the holes but really it's all these people around him and BJ will try over and over all the while to be digging in Jackson he'll split his Force hello friend says he's doing it for Intel and stuff more than Trump and Trump is a fool but he goes for the head then we're aware of that
Macs
We need them out that's all we need them out now we need him to leave the park right now that's what we need
Mac
I'm working on it and he seems to be a steadfast and just sitting there all the stuff is getting ripped apart and that's fine
Mike tew
You're such a little girl is a homo but he's spreading around that is doing stuff to our friend so we're going to do stuff to him I'm sick of his stupid mouth
John Gallagher
We haven't heard enough for several years there's a little spaz and some stuff to our friend and our friend beats him up just like you used to he's still this moron who doesn't get it I'll tell you what if I hear you saying a presale agreement then you get it whenever your own idiots and having your tunnels filled in your dead man Trump
So he's responding like some sort of puppet and that's what he is
Thanos
We're going to move them in a moment no one is old people to see what he's doing he's a huge idiot and is one of the weakest players his also a little baby. We did use them to draw it out and we needed to get ready and we still are and he's going to draw it out further and we need this time it's valuable. This year is big it's not the best it's going to be a big year. My son might go to Utah this year and it might return next year this year because of his mom next year because of Arnie who is still pretty big compared to her. It means a lot of sense but boy they starting to cut it close. Says it gets it. They're going to incapacitator and then they're going to have her transform into d put her into a casket and those got a war with Azog. His arranging to sell us allegiant Air and includes the resort and he's going to try and go there and he's not going to get in the sun says it's probably one of the best ways to kick him out of Florida is that one place that is obsessing with him he obsess more with the building because it's a huge huge f****** f**** and it's one way to get rid of him easily and it's true too you try and get in there hundreds of times have all sorts of troops lost and be a little bit further away be nice so going to work on that. Further they want our son to go out there and to be miserable and to see her out and to think it's all over and all that stuff and Biden will be pissed off Mac and the pseudo empire and the max and a lot of people who are not necessarily massively angry are going to be very angry because we'll see it. So there's a lot of things to laugh at and he's going to get crushed by a lot of people. There's other things to say but the fool gets pushed off when a son criticizes them too much and it's true. It says to his mom but doing that it's the most damage you can cause Tim to Trump he'll be flushed out of the West Coast and it's true and if you flushed out of Florida while he's out there and the a****** is going to be teeny and his people are all in movies cuz that's what they're doing demand to be in movies and it's a curse. Huge numbers of people hate him you might even not make it out to Utah that's true too Dr Manhattan is serious the watchman has begun they're collecting watches from Max and the max are beating on them his forces will be cut in half today and he's an imbecile okay this man is a very stupid person it's a good thing that Dave took the information about his own program to the grave and didn't let the idiot have it. He is pretending it all the time and he says he has power to do so when everyone's telling it to his face that's how stupid it is and how dummy looks and he looks like he's fried over too and that was our son that last paragraph. But really he's an obnoxious loser is the weakest link and people don't recognize it that way as Joe Watson just went around mumbling pissing off everybody in town he got beat up quite often and here he's doing it too he's doing it to our son Non-Stop and we need him removed so we're sending teams

John Frankenheimer's 1965 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III - Jay Leno's Garage
youtube
So the ornaments are silver and this one is solid silver you say it's not cuz he's clever doesn't want it ripped off and this one is a special okay this is probably for someone of the rank of Todd langel with his people it's a region and it is an extremely valuable car and Jay Leno has it and he is that range a little bit above it and he does have the right car and he knows which one he knows who the lady is said these races begin and your elegant and beautiful and I want you in the race and Hera challenges you okay I might be saying that and she got on the line and said I'm in there and I'm going to race after a while so they said no way and it's going on already but it's not started 100%. He wants to bring these cars back and it kind of a clever way he wants to go to Mexico and they don't do it here and revive them and bring them across the border into the West Coast and some he wants to get over here to a certain people this is the right level for the people he's talking about at this time and they'll know what he's saying but it's still a very powerful status symbol to get a renovated one and we are getting requests and it will cost money and we're in business now. And we can find some probably maybe a few thousand and it says he had someone to look at that and they have a bunch and they want to make it cars really replicas at a metal and really he said we you can't make the panel at a metal on my hand but you said we can cast the panels I don't know if you can stamp that kind of metal and we have metal that you can stamp and it's fairly decent and they said we can make replicas and some of the seats are better everything else looks perfect it's up to be upgraded and up to date and he wants to be v12 in it and they said we're going to go ahead and do this. But that's the process for him to do for a few reasons and I like it and we can gather up others and they got me involved and I know which one and it's the ghost and it's called that and you guys are gathering The phantom and we're going to actually sell them and not drive them around but we know what we're doing we can't drive all of them we're just going to drive a few and it is a status symbol and we have to be lowered down so he says I'm going to have a new newer one and yeah that's stupid but okay the newer ones are a status symbol but these are massive sassables to have an old one they're with millions and millions if not more that's all I go for 80 million dollars and I thought it was nuts it'll secretly but it went for two billion. Now that's a lot of money okay nobody spends that in the weekend and here we go people want these and they want the replicas and he said to make the old ones just like they are and I know why it's a good idea now the chassis will be a little different not a ton the body will be pretty much the same the engine is completely different and it will be trimmed down and with a DOT package and the suspension and the tires and rims will look old but their performance and this car is going to move I mean three 400 miles an hour and it's more it's going to be intrinsically armored what you can put armor on it and people do it they put it inside and they do spend the time and it's going to be worth it we'll solve the remodeled ones and those are worth a lot of money for millions and millions of dollars okay up to billions the replicas will be probably 20 million to start and we're going to do this model for the most part to start and we have a lot of them and we're going to put it out there and we want to meet with Mike too and he's the guy to talk to it's a business and he's not in business because BJ closed it off and it's not going just to them and a sunset that we can't take the empire on directly and a bunch of people are like that and mac daddy and Ben don't want the empire to win but they don't think that you taking them on is that great it's not a good stasis but now you're getting rid of each other and they don't want that so you've got kind of the idea
Thor Freya
So you guys are trying not to do anything and he's using us as some sort of intermediary and kind of getting rid of ourselves
Trump
These are expensive things to talk about but I want those cars and I'm going to try and find them on my own and we hear they've been disappearing a lot of them probably 75% to 90%, so we know where they are and he's just going to sell them so we'll probably just buy them and it's going to be a lot of these guys different ones and the old ones it's going to be a good time I look forward to this and the replicas too we're not really building them either Michael too says and Bentley has an interest too and she was called and said what's the idea and he said oh that's great and she said that too and it's going on really soon and that was Duke nukem Blockbuster and they they commented this is a great idea it's one of his best and it's going to happen and it will get the automobile industry going
Thor Freya
Wow this is getting some notice there's a lot of people who don't want it but a ton who do and there's a whole bunch of people who want to buy them and say that they're higher ups we know the process so we're going to go ahead and watch
Trump
I want to be involved so I'm going to have a meeting we're in meetings about some of these companies so I hope they expect to have that happen
Mike tew
We're going to bring a package and talk to you about it it's for the good of a lot of people we have other products too and we have stores that you guys have we have them in mind and it's perfect
Thor Freya
There are cars now that are selling and they make them by scratch no but they're aftermarket types cars and we do know which ones they're not really normal but they're not that abnormal they're smaller and they usually are convertibles or have an open top and they're selling a lot of them it's only several trillion in the area but we are going to point out what they are

We decided to place a few phone calls and we had to do that no so watching you screw around with our son we're getting a beat on you all sudden out of nowhere Dan starts yelling we have to get out of here these people mean business he's talking about fisherman's village and we look around there's kind of moping around so we started hitting them and hitting them he said once you start seeing it they start doing stuff so you see her son get up and move and they're going finally this is your message that you're misses later but BJ is not supposed to see in Charlotte county up at Port Charlotte so he flips out and is yelling screaming. You finally says this which way is it on the bike and he starts going nuts is yelling. My fisherman's wharf and they said don't yell here and they meant him and his child tell him to shut his face and they went ahead and began hitting him. They're taking them down and he's saying ouch and s*** like that. Start screaming and yelling and he's saying it's that guy who's always here and he hears who mike goodhue the willing testament Steeler. Besides yelling and screaming and saying your name is you said her son's gone and you want to get him so he put a hit on him and he tried leaving and they beat him up a bunch of times. Tommy f and Dave next door got into it and Tommy f was a cop and Dave's yelling at him put the taser down you don't need that I'll go quietly and you kept saying it. And there's got a tussle and Dave tried for his gun and Tommy have said don't do that. Well the wrestling someone called the sheriff. It was John remillard came down told the son to stop it and it would not and he had Tommy f and her death crib call me after screening ear to ear it says Trump fell for it in somewhat obscure code and Trump got back got his car and left instead of sons on his own. They lost Dave lost the fight but in the car started yelling all sorts of stuff about Tommy f yeah no so our son says yeah to them like this is what I'm putting up with what am I supposed to do as a 4 year old giant loaded with testosterone and intelligence I'm pissing napalm down your throat so you won't shut your mouth. They said they would be better and they got here and fell apart.

They figured out that it's the demons and that they made something happen. And they figured out that the demon hit mom in the accident. And then they got put together. No all this was fine and dandy and this complicated web but it's not that complicated Mac Daddy was doing a lot of it and the max and the orchestrated all this crap to happen and these guys can't figure it out for the price of tea in China that they had it done so it's a huge pain in the ass everyday they learn all sorts of stuff can't remember it don't know who anyone is it's a nightmare they're that vague about life we can't stand anymore
