oh no, i wasn’t upset at all, i just haven’t listened to the songs in a while so my mind kinda blanked

yeah, i can see that and i’m torn between can speak german and sings along or cannot speak german and sings along (probably the latter); i think he’d also really like slavic music but that might be because he is the genshin equivalent of russian, so that thought might be biased

The monsters and their ability to pick up languages is so interesting to me so here’s some random HCs about monsters + languages that are definitely not original at all:

- Neil learned French in Europe before him and Mary found their way to French-speaking Canada. He essentially had to semi-adopt the language discrepancies while he was there, and even though his fluency is in French from France, sometimes he messes up and pronounces things weirdly or differently (and Kevin frequently makes fun of him for it)

- Kevin has some rusty Japanese that he was forced to learn growing up. He can understand it pretty well, and can somewhat speak it to a lower level, but he can’t read or write it. He’s not fluent, and probably couldn’t hold a conversation with a native speaker, but he could understand his Japanese counterparts in the Nest when he needed to.

- In turn Kevin isn’t able to order in Japanese at a restaurant, but he could explain the rules of Exy to someone fairly coherently if he had to.

- This isn’t an original thought by any means but Neil and Kevin definitely speak in French when they’re by themselves just to make sure they don’t lose it.

- They sometimes make calls to each other on the court in French, and because of this, most of the team picks up very basic calls in French. None of them can actually speak it, but Andrew picks up a little more than the rest, having spent so much time with Kevin. Again, couldn’t hold a conversation, but every now and again he recognises certain words in their conversations.

- Neil is like a walking version of those White Guy Speaks Chinese And Stuns Waitress (he can understand her?!?) polyglot youTube videos. It becomes more of a hobby for him once he’s settled and the FBI are off his back, but the foxes are constantly shocked by how many languages he can speak. He is fluent in English, French, and German of course, with some conversational Spanish, but he can pretty much have a basic interaction in most of the languages of countries he’d been in. His Dutch is the worst, because he could never quite grasp the proper pronunciation of things, but one time he speaks to a waiter in Italian and Andrew can’t believe it.

- (RIP Neil Josten, you would’ve loved duolingo)

- When he goes to the Olympics he’s like a kid in a candy store. It’s like a subconscious bingo game for him to speak to someone from every country at least once.

- Aaron loves listening to music in German. He would definitely drag Nicky to a rave if they ever found themselves in Berlin.

- Katelyn asks him whenever they have their kid if he wants to raise them bilingual, but he decides not to because he only really learned German for Nicky and his brother, and doesn’t really speak it at all after he graduates.

- Neil and Nicky study Spanish together sometimes. It helps Nicky stay close to his roots now that his immediate family is pretty much out of the picture. It means way more to him than Neil even knows.

- Another unoriginal one but Andrew and Neil definitely do learn sign language in the future. I could talk about this one forever.

- When Kevin gets frustrated, he finds it hard to speak ANY language. He messes up words in English, forgets how to say things, and occasionally is the butt of the joke when he combines a French and English word accidentally.

- Kevin watches anime when nobody is around. He thinks dubbed anime is a crime.

- Andrew thinks he’s pretty good at German until he tries to have a conversation with Erik and realises wow native speakers talk a lot faster than we do. You wouldn’t know, because even if he just understands half of a sentence, he can usually piece together what is being said 90% of the time, and he would never admit out loud that he needs Erik to slow down when he’s talking so he can understand him.

- He is, however, REALLY good at accents. He has a talent for speaking gibberish but sounding as if he’s speaking fluent French. It drives Kevin up the wall when he does it, but he also hates when he can’t understand what Kevin and Neil are saying to each other.

And Bonus:

- Jeremy is really bad at accents. He is initially frustrated by Jean and his French, but once he understands that it is Jean’s first language (that the Moriyama’s took from him), he makes an effort to try and learn. He’s just really, really bad at it. Jean cringes every time he tries, because he speaks with a heavy American accent. Jean is not pretentious about his language, but he is, at the end of the day, French. So when Jeremy says bonjour in that hideous so-Cal accent, it’s in part endearing that he’s trying, but mostly like nails on a chalkboard.

WRITING

allthough i feel like my english is pretty good, it is not my first languge. I'm actually German (well, tukisch really..) so, if there is something weird about the way I explain something inherently American, that’s why 🤷‍♀️

what I will be writing: fluff, angst, smut, hcs. I'll write almost anything (for Chris/Matt), I don't mind. go wild with requests I don't judge. the reader will mostly be poc!friendly, but not outright POC. I’ll write hcs for nick x m!reader, just not full stories

what I won't be writing: I might not write some requests. because I feel uncomfortable writing about something I don't know about/have experienced. For example: black!Reader, Latina!Reader, etc. (Heavy emphasis on race, because if yall have a specific fic in mind where the race has something to do with the story, go ask a writer who is black or Latina to write it, they’ll probably have better depiction than I could ever have.) unless it’s German/turkish reader.

Andre hcs bc he’s underrated 🗣

•While he will listen to Cals grunge & borderline emo music and finds himself enjoying it here and there, he loves aggressive music a lot more. Anything u could mosh too really. His favorite genres are industrial metal & nu-metal.

•If he was a little more confident in himself and wasn’t worried about being picked on for yet another thing, he’d dress a lot more metalhead-y if he could. I imagine his style would be a mix between mallgoth, metalhead, and some military aesthetics thrown in there. (I shared a hc that cal was talking about working at hot topic before and this kinda ties into that lol. I think andre really wanted him to get the job so he could have a excuse as to why his wardrobe was getting more alternative. Yknow? Like since Cals working there and he goes to visit him when he can, why not browse around a little?)

•He self harms mostly when he’s angry. He’ll hit himself/his head when frustrated, punches stuff, picks his skin, and burns himself occasionally. He also cuts too but not as much as Cal does. He makes sure his cuts actually look like cat scratches that Mel could have gave him.

•(somewhat not really a hc/basically canon) He has a couple mental disorders but his parents kinda have no idea. He keeps things going on in his head to himself. Even Cal didn’t realize how bad off Andre was until Andre began to really trust him. Seeing that Cal obviously had his own issues (the sh scars) made it a lot easier for Andre to share his problems. As emo/stereotypical as it sounds, he really didn’t think anyone would ever get him in the same way Cal does.

•Andre is just full on GAY. He kept that note that girl gave him ages ago because it just made him feel happy and flattered. When he burns it, he only does so because he feels like he needs to fully rid himself of anyone but Cal. (Bc let’s be honest, there really wasn’t any point of him burning it otherwise? They wanted to get rid of things like CDs, books, and games so the media couldn’t blame what they did on stuff like that. I don’t get how the media could have tied the little love note to what they did.)

•He really thought he’d be a dog person until he met a actual dog as a kid. He didn’t like how hyper the dog was & that it kept jumping on him. That’s why when his parents saw it seemed like Andre was becoming lonely sometime in middle school, they got Mel. He bonded super quickly with her.

That’s not to say he won’t give a dog attention & play around with it. He just prefers cats over dogs any day of the week.

•He likes going on walks a lot. Especially if cal comes with. He likes finding places that seems like no one else knows about. I think he’d be SO thrilled if they found a abandoned old tree house. He repairs it up a little bit, adds some things inside and then declares it the army of twos meeting place. (even if they actually rarely meet there lol. They r more likely to be at each others houses but they spend some nights, share secrets, plan things and whatnot up there.)

•He’s not shy really when speaking but words do get caught in his throat and he can be kinda awkward & can’t really read the room when he’s with a big group of people.

Yknow that “he asked for no pickles” meme? That’s Cal saying that with Andre behind him to me.. Andre just prefers not to speak unless it’s absolutely necessary (with people other than Cal) or if someone pissing him off.

•He can take just about anything apart and put it back together again. He fixes Cals siblings toys all the time. He even fixes their bikes too. But he can do more complex things like taking apart a computer and all that.

•He doesn’t have many memories from when he was in Germany. He remembers some relatives and just random odd things here and there but he mostly only has childhood memories from his time in the US.

•He cusses, shit talks under his breath, calls Cal both sweet and mean names all in german.

-He doesn’t do it as much as a older teen but when he would forget the word for something in English he’d say it in German.

-The first time he said I love you to Cal was in German since he knew Cal probably didn’t know what he was saying. Like I said he also calls him names too which Cal and Rachel would try to figure the translation for later online. If it’s something romantic, Cal always would go “Haha yeah this definitely wasn’t what he said.”

•He looks up to Cal so much and is jealous of him. He loves that Cal lets himself be more vulnerable & all cheeky/boyish. Andre for some reason or another feels the need to come off as the strong, more masculine and mature one of the two around others. He likes that Cal expresses himself through sappy shit like poems & music. Andre has it in his head that he always needs to bottle everything up which results in him being quick to get angry and lash out.

That last part is why he was always so annoyed by Rachel. He couldn’t find it in himself to even tell Cal that he doesn’t want him spending time with anyone else though it’s honestly pretty obvious lol.

The owner of ‘HELL BUNKER’ wears the name ‘Garnet’. A simple man, born as Falco Ritter in Cologne, Germany.

Coming from a middle class worker family, he migrated over to the NUSA to fulfill himself a dream of becoming an artist and of owning a place of his own to show his passion to the world: Techno(ise). Garnet’s lifeblood is not only his bunker and mixing music as a DJ himself, but also his event Chrome Chamber Rave and the radio station ‘HELL BUNKER.FM’ that provides the newest tech hits as well as an online and print techno(ise) magazine named “160+ BPM” that he releases every month. Garnet is an artist and self-starter through and through! Falco has earned quite a high cred and respect in the Night City raver business as his location with mainly CCR is unique compared to other techno(ise) clubs in the city. His vision was not only to bring European, especially German, techno(ise)¹ back to the NUSA, but also to combine it with other artforms and the desire of primal energy that lies deeply rooted within us. He used to be dj-ing at Totentanz years ago which gave him a lot of inspiration for creating HELL BUNKER afterwards. Today, being a quite known underground Techno(ise) DJ within the scene and his bunker, Garnet is still down to earth as a musician and business owner who loves to collaborate with other artists to create art that moves you cerebral and visceral altogether. He also does not shy away from acting as a bouncer for his own club. So if you may have asked yourself why he’s decorating himself with Gorilla arms: It’s for throwing out those who don’t behave appropriately. Falco doesn’t make any excuses.

Garnet's common set list for Chrome Chamber Rave, a fictional hard technoise event in the world of Cyberpunk 2077. He still deejays at CCR. His setlist is of course all hard techno(ise) yet he concentrates to mix it with more emotions and a touch of industrial, even some lyrics and tends to venture further than that. So I decided to borrow the music for Falco. Of course all the music belongs to Roman Gehrecke! There's one song at the end of it I see as the one that is always played at last so the audience knows ok after that it's done. This song is also not by the artist mentioned above but has a well known melody majority knows.

When Brick and Jo move in together Jo would let Brick decorate the house because she doesn't care for decorating and Brick has some fashion school experience so why not. He probably knows a thing or two about decorating. until she gets back home and sees everything is camo print

The only thing they’d know how to properly decorate is their at home gym. It’s the fanciest room in the house too

Or if they don’t have space for a little home gym they put their treadmill in the living room and call it a day.

Movie nights between them would be so difficult because all Brick ever wants to watch is his war movies and Jo at first really isn’t interested in what he wants to watch at all. But once she realizes that they’re actually gorey and include a lot of death and stuff that’s when she gets invested

Fashion is such a jock thing too. I’d imagine he’d stick with his main military career path goal but he takes fashion design courses as a side hobby and of course for assignments he uses Jo as a model for designing clothes. atp All her outfits in her closet are designed or picked out by him lol

And he’d find it so fun to take her shopping too. He makes her try on all the clothes he’d think look good on her and it's so annoying

They’d totally adopt an animal together too. German shepherd 1000%% and it’ll only listen to Jo when she asks it to do tricks. When Brick tries it just asks like it doesn’t understand him which makes him sad 

Or alternatively Brick already has a dog (German shepherd) and when Jo meets it she starts to like the dog more than she likes Brick. And the dog is so smug about it too

I feel like everyone forgets Jo kind of has a soft side for Brick. Sort of and not really like in ep4 “Brick take my hand!!!” right after talking about how we’re gonna leave everyone behind if they abandon us. Plus the music playing in the background and the closeup on their hands and her tone of voice omfg. Like she’ll be helping him bandage his wounds while also reprimanding him for tripping on his shoelaces and skinning his knee. She could never admit how much she actually cares about him.

Like her goal is to make him mad at her and get him to lose his shit and see what it’ll take to get him pissed not make him cry or actually sad. That’s not funny to her

After the show they don’t text at all so Jo’s mad Brick’s ghosting her but then she finds out he’s not allowed to use his phone at military academy (which I imagine is some kind of private boarding school) so he sends her letters instead which is 10x cringier and she love-hates it. He’s so into stereotypical corny romantic gestures too and he thinks he’s so smug and hot while doing it too. Jo thinks it’s dumb in a charming way but mostly dumb

Jo’s also cringy too she’s one of those people who puts her hand on her boyfriends waist when they’re in public

Them having to share a bed is also funny because of Brick’s entire night light situation. Jo can’t sleep at all with it in the room so she just tells him to man up and sleep without it so they compromise that she has to hold him so he’ll fall asleep. They’re the type of couple who fights over the covers too

I imagine them getting together is so complicated. Because it starts out as this weird rivalry situationship where neither of them have ever had a relationship before so they don’t know what they’re doing and both of them are too prideful to ask the other out first. Brick’s the one who goes out of his way to ask her out on dates (and it’s always stuff like “hey i bet i can eat more popcorn than you at the movies.” EVERYTHING has to be a competition between them). He can’t say anything normal and somehow that’s more awkward than their mid argument makeout sessions. Maybe Brick and Jo wanna kiss and make up lives rent free in my head for the rest of my life. Then they finally make things “””official””” when they figure okay what we have going on isn’t platonic so might as well start dating. And also Jo finds out Brick’s been telling all his cadet buddies he and Jo have been dating so they go from there.

I imagine their first kiss is so unplanned too. Nothing romantic because when they’re in the middle of an argument they FINALLY kiss so it’s angry and not good because neither of them know what they’re doing at all. They’re horrible

To me jock is one of those ships that is def having kids in the future (honestly the only Jo ship I see having kids tbh). At first Jo would NEVER want kids but Brick’s the type who does but whatever Jo says. 8. Favorite Make-up: Oooo good question……I have a couple favorites (that aren’t from 1998 because let’s be honest I could rant about 1998 makeup forever (even though it’s the most subdued)).

Off of the top of my head, Tugger from Hamburg 1991, Jellylorum from Macskák 2001 I believe? (I think it’s Hungary, either in 2000 or 2001), Skimble and Misto from Mexico’s tours in 2013, Macavity from Buenos Aires and Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer from what I THINK is a Canadian tour.

9. Favorite song?: Another hard fucking question 😭😭😭 why would you do this to bestie. I don’t think I can pick a favorite, (the only song I actively am not the biggest fan of is journey to the Heavyside layer, and I STILL cry during it).

I think the song I listen to most as an actual SONG, like in my playlist along with fuckin Mitski or Aurora would have to be The Rum Tum Tugger? It’s just easily digestible, a very vibe worthy song, whereas other fun songs like Macavity are very much a moment, yk? (Shoutout to mungo and rumple, because Ive looped their song for weeks at a time (the German version vibes so hard it’s so good)).

20. Did you see cats live? If so, where?:

I fucking DID and I am mad about it TO THIS DAY. I’m SO mad. I’m not gonna reveal the location because that would be very not good and Internet safe™️, but it was at a theater that housed tours of shows, which means I also got to see Jesus Christ Superstar, Hadestown, Hamilton, the like. Thank god my father is a huge theater nerd.

Anyhow, I saw Cats when I was 13, and I remember loving it, and that I picked up on Misto and Tugger immediately.

And that is ALL I remember. WHY? Because not only was I 13, I was coming down from being an Uber-depressed 12 year old, which means there is a year and a half of my life that is almost ENTIRELY gone. Literally could not have picked a worse time to go to see Cats. Every time I’m reminded that I saw Cats live and literally don’t remember it, I throw myself upon the floor in despair.

SO many thoughts. It’s the foundational ship for this fandom ofc.

Firstly, let me establish that I am a Germany-is-HRE truther. Everyone knows that EXCEPT Lutz himself but they all just kind of agree to not mention it. So Feli KNOWS that the boy he love(s/d) is RIGHT. THERE. But he can’t say anything to suggest they’re the same person because to Lutz, that’s a different nation who died, and Feli doesn’t want to confuse or upset him. But Lutz does love him, and not just because of any lingering memories from before!!! He fell in love with Feli completely on his own, and he would fall in love with him over and over again. AUGH. Once they both get their heads out of their asses and express their feelings for each other, FELI is actually the one who takes it slow because he’s afraid of making Lutz feel like he’s just a stand-in for HRE. Feli doesn’t want to jump right to “established relationship” because even though that’s how it kind of feels for him, that’s not how it feels for Lutz. So they take it slow <3 first dates, flowers, first kisses… augh.

Anyways enough with the amnesia agony. THE AGE GAP!!!! Lutz, in his experience, is only about 150 years old. But Feli has been around for over 1300 years. Cradle robber smh. It just cracks me up. And Feli forgets sometimes that Ludwig doesn’t remember anything before the 1870s so he’ll offhandedly mention something that happened hundreds of years ago as if everyone knows it, and Lutz is just like ??? I have no fucking clue what you’re talking about. So even though Lutz often thinks that he’s the more “mature” one, Feli will make some joke about Byzantine Empire being bad in bed and Lutz suddenly feels very, very young. Feli often has to explain in-jokes between all the older nations to him or provide an INSANE amount of context for a simple passing comment. Lana del ray wants what they have.

Ok enough background. Let’s get to the headcanons

Their first dates were very simple <3 Museums, restaurants, art galleries, etc. Feli loves taking Lutz to art galleries and explaining the artworks and their historical backgrounds in vivid detail, and Lutz could listen to Feli talk passionately about art and architecture all day <333 Really I think he just likes the sound of his voice, his musical accent and animated speech. Every once in a rare while Feli will sing, maybe just a couple lines to a song, and Lutz fucking MELTS. They stopped going to restaurants after their first few dates after Lutz was like. Actually. Your cooking is way better and I like helping you in the kitchen. So let’s just do that instead. <3 Realistically a lot of their dates are things they were doing before they were a couple, just in a different light.

Feli taught Lutz how to relax <3 lounging in bed all day, curling up on the sofa with a cup of cocoa and a good book, just enjoying life without worrying about deadlines and routines. Although I don’t think Lutz will ever be able to sleep in the same way Feli can, they absolutely spend Saturday mornings in bed until midday, just tangled up in each other with not a care in the world <3

Conversely, Lutz taught Feli the joys of physical activity besides the walk from the sofa to the fridge lol. Hikes, bike rides, anything that gets them outside and moving. Feli has never been super outdoorsy or active, but breathing in crisp Alpine air and being surrounded by trees older than him is incredible. And he’s enjoying it with the man he loves <3

Meals! Entrées are Italian, desserts are German. Feli never acquired a taste for German food but goddamn that man can make a pie like nobody else. Feli is a lot more passionate about cooking (and Lutz can’t be trusted in front of a stove) but Lutz is happy to help chop vegetables or stir a pot of sauce. The one time they switched roles, Feli was stuck eating some sad, burnt to all hell potato and beef thing, and Lutz learned that he really hates tiramisu. This is not a condemnation of German food, they have some bangers, Lutz is just a bad cook lol.

They do indeed fight and argue like every other couple. Feli tends to be messy, leaving laundry all over the place and not cleaning up his dishes, whereas Lutz is neurotic about cleanliness and goes INSANE trying to convince Feli to just. Put his laundry in the fucking basket. Feli gets mad because sometimes Lutz will treat him like he’s incompetent or just outright stupid. Like there’s a reason he’s still alive and thriving after all this time. Get fucked mate. Ultimately their fights often come down to Feli being inconsiderate and Lutz being condescending.

They’re both fucking obsessed with how the other looks. Lutz is all strength and muscle and Feli wants to bite down on his forearms like a chew toy, and Lutz will never get enough of how Feli’s little waist feels in his hands or having those long legs wrapped around his hips. Some Sweden Headcanons

Sweden has a severe case of selective mutism, he physically cannot talk to someone if he’s not friends with them. He just can’t find the words. As a general rule of thumb, he really only can speak freely around the other Nordics or the Baltics. Of course, there are exceptions. But Finland would have to do most of the chatting if they run into like Italy or smth.

Sweden holds a lot of resentment towards himself as to how he acted in the past. He feels it completely goes against his current day morals and how he would like to be perceived. He’s keen to try and build himself a “neutral” reputation like switzerland has done, but at the end of the day he is still a bit too opinionated on certain things.

even though Sweden is a very independent person, in social situations he tends to just stick beside Finland or Norway like glue, following them and looming behind them. The pair of them try to remain as understand as they can, but sometimes it can be frustrating if they want to chat privately with someone but they can’t get away from Sweden for 5 minutes.

due to his height, his muscles, and his sensory issues, sweden has a very limited wardrobe. If he finds something, he’ll get it again in another colour, because it’s just easier and safer than trying to experiment with other stuff. So his style is very classic & timeless, and it often just feels as though he rewears the exact same outfit over and over again. But, if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.

Sweden always has to be doing something, he always has to set himself some type of task. If it’s spring-summer he has to be fixing up the garden, and if it’s winter he has to find some new home renovation to get started on. He always overworks himself and tires himself out.

he’s your typical Germanic in the sense that he needs a schedule to live. He always wakes up at a specific time, he eats at specific times, the routine just brings him a sort of comfort at this point. If you want to do anything with Sweden, it is imperative that you let him know in advance so he can figure out how to work it into his schedule.

he isn’t as lost with technology as people think he is! He enjoys gaming, but really only the more “boring” games, he enjoys building on the sims or on Minecraft especially.

berries are Sweden’s comfort food. He always loves berries. This extents to jams, smoothies and ciders. He will have either actual berries or jam on every meal he possibly can.

Sweden is a more recent-turned vegan. He’s probably been wanting to convert for ages, but he’s always been nervous considering how picky of an eater he can be. He worked to slowly introduce more and more vegan options into his diet for ages before he felt safe to fully convert.

deep down, I don’t think Sweden is fully sure of who he actually is? He has his obvious morals and his hobbies that are undeniable. But he can spend so much time worrying about how to come across as more approachable, how to mold himself so that he can make friends more easily, How should he be correctly moving his face or placing his body to clearly show his feelings. How to make himself be likeable. How to be the perfect person to represent his people, how to be the perfect friend to everyone, how to be the perfect, perfect person. And he hates to admit it, but the only person he doesn’t feel any of this pressure around is Denmark. And maybe Sweden doesn’t even realise that’s the case.

heaven help us has been my favorite mcr song for a looooooong time and it’s like. MY song. everyone i know knows what is my song. when i listen to it in the car, before the tour even started, i envision myself on barricade hearing it live and i CRY!! every time, like i’ve cried in a full face of makeup listening to heaven help us on the way to work multiple times. it’s the best….it’s everything. the first time they played it live on tour in europe my friend who i had never spoken to on the phone before CALLED ME AT WORK to tell me about it and i had to go hyperventilate in the bathroom. i held out hope all tour hoping i would get ut at one of my shows and i DIDNT!!! when tour was like over and they played it twice in la i literally was sitting in my bed SOBBING! at like 2am on the east coast…but listen i’m putting out the energy for them to play it at wwwy….surely they will have the time to play the bsides! or at least one of them. i’m serious like ok yes, hearing tbp live in full twice is going to change the trajectory of my life all over again!! i cant even imagine me and all my friends together hearing the heart monitor start without thinking well surely someone is going to projectile vomit…like. it’s that. it’s that serious. i’m going to rethink and grace and shit my pants and cry and scream and i may need to be airlifted out of the las vegas festival grounds. but heaven help us….i cant die until i get heaven help us!!

boy division just. fuck. it slays. i remember when it leaked. like the night before it came out there was a preview of it on like german amazon or something 😭 and i remember i kept listening to those 30 seconds over and over again and CRYING!!!! like sobbing, if i could get my og macbook to turn on i have really embarrassing pics of myself bawling on photo booth FHDEIKEK. but also i remember thinking, when it came out, i ALWAYS thought like oh my god this is going to go so hard live. SO HARD. and then they broke up and every single time i listened to it i thought about how we would never get to hear it live and what a damn fucking shame that was. and then they reunited and i went to the shrine and they played make room and i was like ooooooh. well now there is a REAL chance that i could hear boy division one day. i manifested it for the 2.5 years between that show and the tour and when i saw the eden 1 setlist leak before the show and boy division was on it i actually like almost shat in the office at work. and then yes they played it at my first show on the tour mk1 and like at least half of my shows on the tour i swear i made that happen by sheer force of will.

deathwish. just always been one of my favorites, it goes SO hard, it’s so fun to sing, it really like the melody of it just pulls on my heart it tugs it makes me so melancholy so. i don’t even know what feelings it invokes it just makes me FEEL. this big bubble in my chest. and the lyrics are so good like it’s really a quintessential mcr song for me. no one else writes music like that.

vampires is just like. idk the iconic. the first single. it “locked in that darkness” i remember when they played it for the first time in philly, bc we were all camping for albany which was the next night and we were watching the stream around a someone macbook in the queue and when vampires started ohhhh it was over!!! they played it at my first show in 2011 and even though i have like a horrible memory especially for my childhood/teenage years and i don’t REMEMBER my first mcr show i always like remembered the fact that vampires was like the best live performance of a song i’d ever heard, and i have been to a LOT of shows and i’ve seen a LOT of bands and vampires never fails!

and flw, listen…i know people like to hate on it!!! idgaf. it will never get old. i will never tire of it. it will never not hit me so hard. i remember being a depressed teenager and laying in bed at night not able to sleep just listening to flw over and over and over in order to make it through. plus hearing the crowd sing the bridge at every show ever…it’s the most magical thing in the world to me!!!!

Break Out - June 2004, interview with Till and Flake

For a long time it was very quiet around Germany's most popular critics' band. Three years after the 'Mutter’ release, the kings of martial rock are back with their new album 'Reise, Reise' - and, to anticipate it, with a good deal of courage for change. The last few years have been very stressful for the sextet from the greater Berlin area - several world tours, new records, monstrous live performances and always anxious not only to convey something audible to the fan, but also to always have something for the eye with them. All this also leaves its mark and shapes a band. On a muggy Friday afternoon in June, we met with Lindemann and Dr. Lorenz for a nice chat about the new CD, the past and the future in a luxury hotel in Munich.

In recent months, rumors have been circulating that the band has fallen out and is about to break up.

Flake: With six men, it's completely normal to argue, and rumors result in things that are half-said, for example on the Internet or something - we would have said something if it had come to that. Funnily enough, I found out about this when I went to Sound & Drumland to buy a cable. I asked the seller to issue the invoice to Rammstein, but he said to me: 'Why Rammstein, what do you need a cable for, you don't exist anymore?' I just thought: Aha!

Till: I think there were also rumors that Richard moved to New York, I went back to Mecklenburg, which is actually where I'm from. And maybe someone gave an interview in the wrong place, where it also happened that we once had a fight — and since everyone always thought that Rammstein had the East German collective spirit blah blah blah over the years — is that end of the band? There is nothing to all of that, and besides, we fight all the time, and that's part of it!

Flake: On top of that, Richard is working on a solo project, but I don't know how far that's progressed either.

Interesting, Richard Kruspe-Bernstein is working on his solo project.

Till: He asked us if he could do something of his own alongside Rammstein, and we gave him carte blanche — and why not. Richard has always brought a lot of input to the band. For this reason, there was once more space on this recording for the new CD, so that others in the band also had their chance to get involved. We created an organic rehearsal room situation where everyone could contribute this time. Richard then does his solo project on the side, but that's his and no one knows how far it's gotten. I also published a book and took part in a film. Flake and Paul have been writing a book. All of this is also a way in which we deal with each other in a much more relaxed manner and have also become more tolerant. Previously this would have been impossible. It used to be take or die with the band. I think it's really good that the reins have loosened up a bit and everyone says: you do yours, I'll do mine. Despite all that, we made a great record and that's a state of affairs that I really applaud!

When listening to 'Reise, Reise' it is already noticeable that Rammstein have tried to break new ground here. The single release 'Mein Teil' hits the classic Rammstein notch, while other songs are much more poetic/melancholic/musical ('Amour' — Alexandra could have sung this song too! 'Morgenstern', 'Wo bist du') come along . But then they also have softened sing-along songs to offer like 'America' or 'Reise, Reise'. The song 'Flugangst' could also have been on the 'Sehnsucht' album. The whole thing is much more multifaceted and will make the classic Rammstein fan who loves the brute guitar work ponder and the new one, even more. Thanks to the singing voice of Till Lindemann, the fan that needs to be developed is more likely to bring Rammstein closer. The tightrope walk that Rammstein walked with 'Reise, Reise' impressed me and was successful.

Flake: You're like a doctor.

Till: We're coming back with 'Mein teil’. The boys are back in town. I'm a little annoyed because I was really annoying in the beginning when we recorded the song 'Amour' because that song was kind of a duet thing like that Kylie Minogue/Nick Cave thing. The verse sung by a woman, that would have been nice. But nobody listened to me, because I have nothing to report anyway…. [grin!]. This is the worst nerd in the group anyway [Lindemann points to Dr. Lorenz]. Look, he's gotten really skinny.

Flake: We don't write songs in the traditional sense. We just stood in the rehearsal room and made music together. Completely freely and without any of us giving any instructions. We were never away from the window. After 'Mutter’ we toured for two years, then we basically had six weeks off and then we started working on point. The creative process for this record started immediately after the tour. This time we were very quick with the plate because there were no complications. We didn't have to mix anything twice, and we didn't have to move anything. It was actually the first record that went according to plan that was really fast and relaxed.

Till: The stages like mixing took eight weeks. We had a few more songs on the schedule and that's why there was this momentary delay. But everyone was always in the right place at the right time. Even Richard was always there when he needed to be there. This time the record was actually made in the rehearsal room and like before, where tapes were brought into the rehearsal room and then the songs were made. In general, this record was made entirely by all of us in a collaborative effort.

The most provocative title on the record is undoubtedly 'Mein Teil'. The text is about the 'Cannibals of Rottenburg - Armin Meiwes', who became well-known in the media, and shows the human abyss.

Flake: This story has nothing to do with cannibalism. The Word is wrong in this regard. Till: Provoke even more? We don't want to criticize. We already have the problem that 'Amerika' is interpreted as a political song. And it is now being assumed that Rammstein is becoming political and we only want to list facts and facts, just like we do with Armin, that really happens and everyone is involved. Since the Iraq war, this has also become an issue for us. We hung the pictures of Saddam's palace in Baghdad in the rehearsal room before and after the Americans were there. I sat with Flake with the pictures and we tried to understand how many little wars they've started over the last twenty years. I've never been a great friend of the Americans, and whether we succeed there or not, I don't give a fuck. I don't have to like everyone who buys my CDs.

In addition to the songs already mentioned, there was also a treat in the form of the song 'Los'. An unplugged song that shows Rammstein from a totally different, but very pleasant side. So far, however, it is not clear whether the band-related song will be on 'Reise, Reise' or not.

Till: Shit, I don't even want to hear that. It's a good song, but I don't want to put it on the record. That's a good b-side or something.

Flake: I generally have a problem with a band singing about themselves, I find that very dangerous. You know that from these hip hoppers like 'Hey we're here, my voice is the microphone, my weapon in the street fight...' that's all really embarrassing, or just like the rockers used to be 'Yes, we rock and we are the Rock'n 'Roller..' I find that disgusting, because you can see that it's a rock band. The music of 'Los' is actually a very dull Rammstein riff where we then just took the riff away. The original sounds almost akin to 'Wollt ihr das Bett in Flammen sehen?'.

Till: There were opinions in the band to dig up the old roots. Listen, here's something from way back. So a remix or a second version of the song was made. We were in Stockholm in the back room of our studio and between Paul, Oliver, Flake and Schneider the guitar was going around trying to spin on this Morricone tune. Schneider used to be a blues guitarist and started playing the scheme and was the winner. At the time I would never have thought that it would become a song of its own. For me there was no question that this song should not be on the record. Maybe as a hidden track attached to the back. We will see. I like the original a lot better because there's a really good chorus on 'Los' and that's completely gone on the current version.

At the last Christmas party, Rammstein delighted the crowd of fans with the 'Lichtspielhaus' DVD. Well done, but for me also with many deficits. For example, why only this short excerpt from the 'Big Day Out' in Australia and why not the complete legendary ’96 Arena concert? One would have wished for more from the TV trailers, too.

Till: About the '96 arena concert, you can call Emu, our manager, and tell him to publish it — I can only underline that.

Flake: From the Australian concert there are only these recordings. I think that's a pity too, but we really don't have any more material. I also like the arena concert. As far as TV goes, I can tell you we're a bit TV shy because we seem very awkward in front of the camera. That then disenchants the Rammstein myth, and for this reason television is not the right medium for us.

Till: Basically, we suck in front of the camera. It's ok on stage, but not when it comes to interviews or reports.

Rammstein has also suffered from stagnant sales figures since 'Mutter’. But the band is also concerned about the rapidly fluctuating music industry and its users.

Till: Downloading, burning CDs and downloading for free on the net are the biggest problems. I find the whole thing sickening. I think it's stealing when someone can download music for free. That music is offered too expensively is another story, the record company has to bear this consequence. I think the Russians found a good solution. In Russia there is a huge market called Kyrilix. It was agreed with the record company that the price for a CD would be halved so that something would come in at all. I think that would be a good compromise. It's crazy, I walk through Moscow and find photos of us that I can't remember myself. We once sang a song live in Russian in Russia, and they recorded it and released it. They probably bugged us while we were fucking in the hotel, and now you can buy that too. I'm curious about this single song downloading story. Then bands just have to straighten themselves out and admit that they're not coming up with a smash hit and you have to go along with all the other bad songs. I download a song for one euro — I think that's a good way of getting paid. This could then result in a way of marketing as it actually has to be. If nothing happens, the medium of music will go down the drain. Television is now doing these superstar or popstar stories and exploiting the rights in a similar way as record companies have done and making a huge profit from it. I don't think that's good. Same problem with a lot of good bands that will never have a chance to get out. The record companies say we don't have the money to offer you a deal or to do a studio thing. Take Rammstein: what we experienced with our record company was perhaps unique, but they believed in us, invested a lot of money in us, and we are then obliged to give it back to them. At some point we'll be out of contract and then we can do whatever we want - but without this record company we'd be a fart in the wind.
