Day 19 | Letter 19: Hamza
Hamza is the forgotten letter. We only remember it as an extra mark that accompanies other letters such as alef, waw and alef maksoura, while it is an independent letter and the Arabic alphabet is incomplete without it.
It is a simple shape actually, made of three compact strokes that are one dot away from each other (shown separately on the top line).
The first stroke’s movement is similar to that of yeh’s first stroke but we only curve it one dot down. Then we curve the pen inward one dot wide - this is the thickest stroke. Finally we move one dot away to the right and stroke the pen down to make the base which is a tail curving downward from right to left and it’s two dots wide.
The mark has the same strokes but it’s done in a more compact movement so that the overall shape is smaller (shown also on the top line, far left).
So far we’ve covered all 19 isolated shapes, with the exception of the ligature lam-alef which will be done tomorrow, and the following 29 letters of the Arabic alphabet: ا ب ت ث ح خ ج د ذ ر ز س ش ص ض ط ظ ع غ ف ق ك ل م ن ه و ي ء
But to be more accurate I am listing all the isolated letters used in writing which are 36: ا أ إ ب ت ث ح خ ج د ذ ر ز س ش ص ض ط ظ ع غ ف ق ك ل م ن ه ة و ؤ ى ي ئ ء There is also alef with madda above آ but I haven’t covered the mark madda, which is like a wave three dots wide.
I will wrap up part 1 (which is the isolated letters) tomorrow with lam-alef.

Love these places
House of Books Franck Bohbot
As we move towards becoming an increasingly digitized society, this testament to the home of the printed word is a reminder of the once-precious physical object of the book, and the serene majesty of these institutions that first made such transformative objects accessible. With no human readers visible in the images, the books serve as the main protagonists of the series, with the library interiors forming their stately backdrop. The grandiosity of the chosen structures comes to symbolize the significance of the library itself—a vital, democratic space of refuge, education, remembrance, and possibility.
