A Ballad of Betrayal

part 1

The sun came over the ice covered horizon, the freshly fallen snow glistening in the wake of morning’s kiss, and I’m reminded of your eyes. Oh, how they’d glimmer and shine for me, your pupils dilating as you took me in, shrinking the many shades of blue and silver in the circumference of your irises.

I stare at the icy tundra and feel my heart freeze further, colder than the frozen wasteland before me. And then I remembered that is how you’ve left me. Empty and dead like a frozen wasteland.

I swallowed down the fond memory of your gaze, and let the heat of rage once more warm my body, coursing hot blood through my veins, melting away the icy hand of winter. I let the fire within warm me, but even my fire won’t penetrate the thick walls of ice that have formed around this heart.

Once I felt my toes were sufficiently defrosted from the heat, I began my journey. One foot over the boarder of the city, and then the next, and I was free. Free of this insufferable kingdom. Free from its hideous ruler. Free from the dungeons. Free from the torment. I inhaled a long, deep breath through my nose, the cold evening air biting at my nostrils but smelling of snow and pine as a breeze blew the scent of the forest toward me.

Never had I ever smelled something so wonderful. I picked up my feet once more and carried on toward the line of trees where the barren land beyond the city was cut off on one side, and a lush, snowy trove of pine and birch trees stood tall and mighty. This is where I will begin my hunt.

I feel like something that should have been explored more in Arcane is that despite the dangers and pretty much horrific conditions, Zaun children seemingly grow up a lot more caring and have a larger understanding of family in comparison to Piltover children. And if such a reflection of the real world in a sense.

The kids of Zaun seemingly grow up with a lot more adult support. Ekko is easily welcomed under Benzo’s wings. Vander adopts 4 kids (two of which we learn he knew of before their parents death, two of which we can’t be sure of). Silco, despite all what happened, and his ulterior motives, shows no problem adopting Powder/Jinx. In the alternate universe it seems as though he’s still played a part in the kids lives. Jinx adopts Isha easily and Sevika cares for her as well. Hell, even Mr. War Crimes Against Humanity does well with little Viktor (until ya know, the animal abuse).

Hell, up until Vander dies (the first time) there seems to be a large understanding of if there’s an orphan or a kid in need of guidance, take them in! (And certainly don’t inform them of your plans to turn a giant pink salamander into drugs and be confused when a nine year old doesn’t understand). If a kid wants to be your apprentice, let them! For the most part, until things all went wrong in the end of act 1 of season 1, the worst parts of Zaun seem pretty typical for any city in poverty.

Match that with what we see with how Caitlyn and Jayce grow up. Caitlyn is given adult support, yes, and it’s clearly a good adult mentor, but it’s not entirely by her choice. It’s been chosen for her. She’s safe, but there’s a lack of freedom of choice. Meanwhile, when Jayce gets older, and that same accident in Act 1 happens, the family that supported him and his mom turns their backs. His own mom doesn’t support him either, because she’s afraid of what he’s talking about, but also because he’s damming them to being outcasts.

Conversely, Vander is more than willing to take the fall for what Claggor, Milo, Vi and Powder did. He’s willing to go to prison for a long time, in order for them to have a better future. Despite Vi’s best efforts, he’s not going to listen to her (she is just a kid) and he’s not letting his family go down and get hurt.

Meanwhile, a man who grew up in this mentality, where there’s a wide sense of family support from people who aren’t your biological family, is the one to go to Jayce, a stranger, and tells him he believes in him. It’s why it’s such a shock to Jayce; his own family and family friends denied him. They didn’t support him.

I think that’s what makes all the difference. Piltover and Zaun have wildly different understandings of family and forgiveness. For Piltover, it shuns and damns the lives of those who upset the balance. For Zaun, it provides safety and never ending understanding.

Just. I’m thinking.

Danny is from a world where everyone has wings, even if most have long since lost the ability to fly. Something about loading and aspect ratio, wings being too small, body too heavy, now mostly used as display, whatever. 

It doesn’t matter even if he had blueprints from when he was like six of a jetpack to help fly. It won’t work anyway and hey, he has his ghost form! Which uh, might be perhaps, affecting his wings which were maybe sort of scorched black and practically down to the bone thanks to the accident. 

It doesn’t matter, he swears. Though he’s admittedly relieved to see the new feathers growing in are different from Dan’s angry sunset. Even if they’re not even supposed to be able to grow back. Alright, this is fine, no one is going to notice! It’s not like everyone knows about the poor Fenton kid whose wings were absolutely destroyed thanks to an accident! It’s fine. 

He’s not flying in a half-panic towards the Far Frozen while crying because his wings are coming back and he’s so scared. He didn’t panic and instantly fled the moment Jazz pointed them out while changing the bandages. 

He definitely didn’t trip over something while wiping away said tears and blacking out from all the stress and all of his problems that he definitely mentioned to someone and isn’t keeping a secret. Definitely. 

Hawkwoman and Hawkman would like everyone to know that neither of them were expecting a very small child to be spat out of the villain of that week’s machine that should definitely not be a portal. A very small child, maybe nine or ten, with a multitude of concerning wounds both old and fresh. Which isn’t even beginning to touch on the wings. 

Feathered, like baby down despite the gnarled scars, unlike their own metallic, with the beginning of tiny specklings like stars amidst the darker fuzz peeking from the wounded flesh. 

Who?! Who dared?! It’s (at least to the forever reincarnating duo) a literal baby! They still have down! Tiny baby fuzz! Was it the portal?! Oh this villain is going to taste their maces for causing this if that’s the case! 

The rest of the Justice League would honestly like to know what just happened and are honestly unsure on if they should stop the two…

you know all of those movies and shows about princesses and twins and twin princesses and swapping places etc etc. well miraculous ladybug is actually also one of those shows, it is just told from the angle of “what if the twin princess was your mom and she gave you so many issues”

Thinking about how Carlos says he would want Charles’ ability to not care which I think is the kind of answer given by someone who cares too much and doesn’t know how to let go of things easily and wishes he could care less about things that end up hurting him. And then there’s Charles who definitely cares a lot about so many things but is just very good at pretending he doesn’t. Whether it’s all the PR training he’s had in order to be able to control his emotions or it’s a defense mechanism he’s developed after going through so much personal loss, it made him very very good at putting up that nonchalant guy facade. His answer to which quality he would want to take from Carlos is immediately “none”. That’s the nonchalant facade talking. And Carlos’ reaction is I want to stop existing because again he’s the guy who cares too much and doesn’t know how to hide it. But you can see Charles is going through the mental list of things he knows Carlos is better at than him and looking for a fun answer to give for the video. When Charles lands on the golf swing Carlos immediately says that’s not a good skill because this is something he knows he can improve at and he’s not satisfied with yet. His reaction changes immediately when Charles goes for the hair since this is a physical feature that he’s accepted is better than what most people have but when Charles says “not now”, being the guy who cares too much, he goes back to trying to get Charles’ approval again and Charles notices and tells him it’s getting better. Their interactions are always so fascinating to me I really need to study them.

holding garak responsible for his behaviour on empok nor is kinda ridiculous for a number of reasons, one of which is obviously the fantastical nature of specifically what happened there in the first place, but. i gotta say.

if someone was slowly induced into a state of psychosis, dosed with utterly absurd amounts of basically amphetamines against their will, and then placed into a situation that involved them being encouraged to murder at least two people in the name of self defense, if they went ahead and flipped out and tried to kill everyone else present at the time, well—

i think i would forgive a real world human for that too, honestly. i do not think that would be their fault. i would think that situation was fucked up and they (and everyone else) were gonna need therapy forever and ever but that was not their fuckin’ fault.

Danny feels bad for Damian. Not bad enough to stop doing what he’s doing, but still bad. He doesn’t deserve to be led on about their relationship like this.

Danny has no idea how the rich boy even noticed a nobody like him, but when Damian had asked him out to lunch, he’d jumped at the chance to have a proper meal. And when it became a repeat thing, he chose not to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Until one time Damian had clarified that he wanted it to be a date, and he froze.

His first instinct was to say no. Damian did seem like a fine person, but Danny wasn’t romantically interested in him. He should have said no, but the refusal stuck in his throat. Their meals were first time he’d felt properly full in a long while. Being a homeless runaway didn’t make for easy finances, and homeless shelters and soup kitchens weren’t aways available (especially since in Gotham, some were just fronts).

So he said yes.

He could play along. It wasn’t like dating was a declaration of anything permanent. Plenty of people dated and then broke up. And it wasn’t like he was going to drain the boy’s bank account, just… use the situation to keep himself afloat until he could find something better.

…not that the justifications make the ruse any less painful

Danny might have made a mistake. On one hand, thankfully, his class hasn’t realized he’s Phantom, which is good. On the other hand, he’s somehow become their arms dealer after maybe, just maybe er, being done with Skulker’s shit when he was just trying to do his test and er… maybe beating him to a pulp. As Danny Fenton. 

Well, the good news is apparently everyone now thinks that he doesn’t fight back lest he accidentally snap someone’s spine. Which is honestly kind of nice to not have to deal with the harassment anymore. 

How has he become the fenton technology arms dealer though?! Legitimately, he has no idea how it happened except for sleep deprivation and someone mentioning how one of the places that they might be going to for the field trip was Gotham. 

At least everyone has their weapons and knows how to use them when some sort of clown-masked people decide to break into the mall and attempt to take them hostage. So. He guess he can’t complain, and at least he got food that doesn’t come alive in exchange.
