genuinely i believe if chade was out of his life fitz would be far happier and healthier. and i mean the latter literally in that chade denies fitz his body not maliciously (for once), but bc its how he's used to seeing his own--as a tool to take pride in and use to its limits. anyway there's a lot about coming to buckkeep that fitz obviously enjoys but the actions induced by chade's dominance are so obviously not part of that list that its taking its toll on those that are
#like. the recurring theme of conflict abt age both internal and external conflict. is not arbitrary. esp as it pertains to chade and fitz#realm of the elderlings#i do think that it would benefit fitz to talk to kettricken or the fool abt his relationship w chade#but most important of all he should HIT THE BRICKS. godbless đ

Realm of the Quarantine Reread End-of-Book Questionnaire: Assassinâs Quest
Any differences between your first/previous reading experience and this one?
Keep in mind Iâm writing this months after finishing the book lol (itâs mental illness innit). I have LOTS of notes to go off but yeah, things arenât as fresh in my mind overall. With that said the biggest difference I can think of between my first and second experience with AQ is my feelings towards Kettricken. I think the first time around reading you know that Fitz is an unreliable narrator but you are still limited by his viewpoint so you can get a bit trapped seeing things the way he does. For this reason, I think I pretty much just forgave Kettricken when he did on my first read, whereas on this read I was likeâŚâŚ. Waiting for her to actually apologise and show some sympathy towards Fitz and it justâŚ. Never happened.
Like, donât get me wrong, I still love Kettricken as a character and I fully recognise that she has been traumatised. I donât expect her to be nice or act rationally, and in the case of being willing to take Nettle for the crown⌠Itâs cold but sheâs doing what she feels she has to. My issue is - do what you have to, but donât expect Fitz to understand or forgive you (same with Starling). But I think what bothered me the most was how Kettricken would constantly confide in Fitz and break down to him and he was always there to let her do so, yet she NEVER gives Fitz the chance to do the same. The one time he does âopen upâ in a sense is when she forces him to air out his traumas in front of everyone, and she didnât show him any sympathy for what heâd been through then or later. She has been through hell, absolutely, but while her plight may not have been any better than Fitzâs it certainly wasnât any worse. She pretty much had two modes in this book: completely cold or a crying wreck - but she was only ever crying for herself. She lets Fitz console her but she never consoles him. Again, this is a result of her own trauma and I donât expect her to act any differently, but it just reaffirmed for me that while she and Fitz care for each other deeply it is not an equal relationship. Fitz feels an obligation to serve her and she - knowingly or not - takes advantage of that. Like, after realising that this is their dynamic it is so obvious that the same is true in Royal Assassin as well, and it will be interesting to see how it changes (or doesnât) in Tawny Man as I donât remember it well enough to say.
Must reiterate: Kettricken is still a great character and I still have a lot of respect for her, unfortunately she just falls into the overfull camp of people who love Fitz but have an unhealthy power dynamic with him.
The other big difference I noticed was that the Verity stuff just wasnât as devastating this time. Not because it was any less sad but it just didnât tear out my heart like it did the first time. Thatâs not a fault with the writing at all, I think itâs just the fact that, knowing what would happen to Verity and that we wouldnât see the real Verity again, I kind of already let go of him at the end of Royal Assassin.
Something you canât believe you forgot
I guess more of a misinterpretation/wishful thinking but like, realising that there is no passage explicitly stating that Fitz and the Fool were actually spooning in the mountains murdered me and spat on my corpse.
Oh also!!! Fitz yeeting himself out the window at Tradeford castle jskaskjf
Favourite character introduction moments/scenes
I love Kettle in general and the way weâre introduced to her as a cranky old lady sets her up perfectly
Favourite character arcs
Man theyâre all so fucking sad lol but I guess the Fool? He goes from thinking Fitz is dead and his purpose failed to reuniting with Fitz, their relationship growing into something really real for the first time, and actually completing his mission - at least for now lol. This book is really the first time you get to see the Fool be properly vulnerable. Even when he was getting beaten up by Regalâs guards he always had his veneer of snark and superiority to hide behind - and I doubt when he went through his sicknesses at Buckkeep he would have revealed his weakness to anyone in order to be helped. But in the mountains he lets so much of that facade of the Kingâs Fool fall away - at least when itâs just him and Fitz. When he and Fitz meet again he lets Fitz see his grief and pain and hopelessness and joy as the Fool looks after Fitz, and then later when itâs the Fool who needs looking after he lets Fitz look after him. When was the last time the Fool had anyone really care for him like that, ya know? Had someone protect him purely out of love? Ouch dude!!!!
Also he gets to kiss Fitz at the end so good for him!!!!!!!!!! Be gay ride dragons!!
Favourite quote/s
âI would kill Regal. It only seemed fair. He had killed me first.â
âI had looked into the heart of my enemy. I still could not comprehend him.â
âThe more I drank, the less tolerable my situation seemed. And the more intolerable I became to my friends.â
âI had never thought to be disdained by a tree.â
âThe Fool, the Fool, only the Fool. I sought for him. I almost found him. Oh, he was passing strange, and surpassing strange. He darted and eluded me, like a bright gold carp in a weedy pool, like the motes that dance before oneâs eyes after being dazzled by the sun. As well to clutch at the moonâs reflection in a still midnight pond as to seek a grip on that bright mind. I knew his beauty and his power in the briefest flashes of insight. In a moment I understood and marvelled at all that he was, and in the next I had forgotten that understanding.â
âWhen you can either laugh or cry, you might as well laugh.â - the Fool
Favourite relationships
FitzandthefoolfitzandthefoolfitzandthefoolbahslbghabfhalgngjbaÂ
Also fitz and nighteyes (speaking of which, Nighteyesâ arc in this book is also fascinating and surprisingly complex) and Fitz/Nighteyes/Fool mwah magnifico chefâs kiss
Favourite setting
Kelsingra baybeyyy. I remember the first time reading this having no fucking clue what was happening in that chapter but I guess it was the gay agenda all along
Favourite chapter
Itâs gotta be the chapter where Fitz and the Fool reunite, right? Catch me just gradually losing my grip on reality with every lingering stareÂ
Most loved character
Foooooooooool
Most hated character
Ya know, for a minute I was actually wondering if I would like Starling this time round but yeah no lol. She was actually okay for a while but as soon as she sold Fitz/Nettle out she became The Worst, just as I remembered her. Itâs not even because she betrays Fitz but because, like Kettricken, she expects Fitz to forgive her for it, to the point of running to tattle to the queen because Fitz isnât giving her enough attention (Iâm also not impressed with Kettricken for actually getting involved instead of just telling her to grow up). Not to mention her constantly misgendering/gendering (??) the Fool or just assuming the Foolâs gender and loudly fucking proclaiming it to everybody is just truly fucking disgusting. Like I cannot even explain how furious I was reading her incessantly using she/her pronouns for the Fool despite no confirmation that her theory is right or that the Fool is comfortable with this and despite EVERYONE ELSE using he/him pronouns. God Iâm mad now lol. She just acts like a spoilt brat and it makes my blood boil. But thatâs probably because I have known many people like this so⌠Good character writing lol congrats
Raise your hand if youâve been personally victimised by Robin Hobb (most heartbreaking and/or visceral moments)
The whole first chapter/s are just so heavy and carry on that gut wrenching feeling from the end of Royal Assassin. Fitz just has no real desire to live and watching him systematically severing the last few ties he has to his human life is just so sad.
Even though I wasnât as attached to Verity this time, his goodbye to Fitz still made me cry
As did Fitz giving Kettle her skill back
Verity using Fitzâs body to have sex with Kettricken really got to me this time, mostly because I either didnât notice the first time or had forgotten just how much it affects Fitz. Itâs no wonder he doesnât want to acknowledge Dutiful as his son when the event that brought that fact into being was so fucked up and traumatic. Itâs really upsetting.
Burrich saying he almost took Fitz to Chivalry and he should have never let the Farseers take Fitz just âŚâŚ breaks my heart. Just seeing Burrich so raw like that in general is so unusual it really takes you aback.
Details, observations, spoilery notes made with the benefit of the full picture
Strap in lads this part is lonnnngggggggg
Is it bad to immediately want to cry just from seeing âSandsedgeâ on the map and thinking of Sandsedge brandy
I never really thought about how poor Hap didnât get the real Fitz all those years and how their relationship could have been if Fitz hadnât been partially forged
Pls I have no idea why but to picture someone as emotionally repressed as Fitz actually sitting down and writing about his life makes me want to fucking cryyyyeeeee
Fitz in the prologue talks about needing a purpose as something to distract himself from sinking [into his chronic pain, mental illness and addiction] and boy howdy if that ainât relatable. As someone with mental illness and chronic pain Fitz is just painfully relatable way too often.
âI have never forgiven myself the triumph I ceded him when I took poison and died.â Fitz :(((( my guy :((((((( forgive yourself for surviving however you could baby!!!!!
This book mentions Bingtown providing slaves to Chalced
Itâs so funny to me when people expect Fitz to have social skills as if he didnât literally live as a fucking wolf for weeks at a time. Itâs a miracle he bloody speaks
The state Fitz is in at the beginning of this book was literally Burrichâs greatest fear for him, yet Burrich doesnât just say I told you so and leave. He stays, is patient and even optimistic.
âHe (Burrich) is not bigger than I.â Why does this feel so wrong lol??? I just canât picture Fitz as bigger than Burrich
âWhen you were younger and not supposed to go into taverns without meâŚâ So itâs fine if the child goes into taverns and gets drunk as long as youâre also there. Got it, Burrich.
Fitz calling Chade âthe grey oneâ wow get rekd old man river
Seeing Chade and Burrich interact is so bizarre
Fitz is still having seizures at the beginning of this book! I had forgotten that
God okay so idk if I can articulate this point super well but the whole thing of Fitz going through this extensive abuse and then essentially becoming an animal feels like a metaphor for the way your brainâs âhigherâ needs and functions just shut off sometimes under certain levels of stress. Like in order to cope with the trauma you donât think about concepts, or long-term goals, or other people. You just take care of your basic needs - food, sleep, shelter, water - long enough that you start to feel safe and secure again, at which point your brain can open up a bit more and allow you to really think again; to want again, to plan again etc. Like obviously literally becoming an animal is a heightened version of reality, but the functionality of it is the same; our wounds and our fear stop us from fully embodying ourselves.
Burrich be like, Fitz was getting way too dependent on drugs before all this so letâs steer clear of those. :) LETâS GET HIM ABSOLUTELY SHITFACED INSTEAD
IÂ love how Fitz has his own unique relationship with Lacey and sheâs not just Patienceâs servant in his mind
Fitz talking about how even his memories from before his time in the dungeons are soiled by his trauma :( baby boy
Dude itâs so rich Chade lecturing Fitz about not making a life for himself, having friends or just chilling out like???? WHO TRAINED HIM TO BE AN ASSASSIN CHADE?? Like I get your point but what the hell kind of life did you think he was gonna have? Who ever took the time to teach him the importance of making connections with people for their own sake, and when would he have ever had the time anyway? I think Chade himself doesnât actually know what he expects from Fitz.
Fitz saying heâs bad at making decisions because heâs never actually been allowed to make any is literally a point Iâve made lol. This is what happens when you teach teenagers how to murder in lieu of any basic life skills.
Burrich + Chiv were luv at first sight. No I will not elaborate.
âWe kept you a boy, looked after you too much.â Huh??????? Fitz was never fucking sheltered lol. He didnât have autonomy. Thereâs a difference.
Iâm so fucking glad Fitz hugged Burrich before he left and that they actually left off on okay-ish terms. I didnât remember that and it vaguely dulls the blow of knowing we donât see Burrich again til Foolâs Fate (and that he thinks Fitz is dead the entire time between now and then).
âIf I shaved my hair back from my browâ bitch disgusting
âHoney was the older of the two women. Perhaps my age.â jskfjnajgbl my guy those arenât women then those are children!!!!!! U freak
I was wondering for ages why Fitz doesnât mention the Fool like literally at all bc thatâs so unusual right? Even in Assassinâs Apprentice he thinks of him when he goes to Moonseye and just in general the Fool usually enters Fitzâs thoughts pretty frequently. So why now, when Fitz doesnât even know if the Fool is okay, is he just not thinking about him? And then I realised that that is exactly why. Because the only two people from his old life he doesnât think about are the two people whose fates he knows nothing of: Kettricken and the Fool. So he can let his mind wander to think what Patience and Lacey might be up to at Buckkeep, or who Molly is with or whatever, because he knows they are all safe. But in such a fragile state I donât think he can bring himself to really wonder whether Kettricken and the Fool made it to their destination - he probably doesnât really believe they could have, and that is far too painful a road to go down when you are trying not to think at all.
I know the first act of this book is slow and that bothers some people, but I think it is so necessary, not only for Fitzâs arc but also because it really demonstrates just how severe the situation has gotten with the red ships and forged ones AND it shows just how destructive a king Regal is. Without this perspective it would probably be much harder to buy that the extreme measures taken at the end of the book are really worth the sacrifice.
Fitz is Demisexual, Exhibit A: when Honey is coming onto him, all he can think about is Molly.
Fitz is so scared of the Forged ones :( his trauma affects everything. He has no faith in himself and less heart for the violence than ever.
Speaking of trauma metaphors: the way Fitz tends to drift off into the wit or Skill after a traumatic experience is⌠pretty much just dissociation but magique
I forgot that witted folk can apparently communicate with each other mentally, not just with animals
âHer head was the size of a bushel basket.â Ah, yes, a bushel basket, a thing whose size we are all intimately familiar with.
Fitz finally finds others like him and even then he is not fully accepted. Told he is doing the wit wrong. Othered by the Others. Itâs the queer experience innit.
Also forgot that apparently the forged are attracted to the wit as well as the Skill?
âI wondered if I had as many wolf mannerisms as they had halk and bear.â Yeah no probably not you only bloody LIVED as a wolf, Fitz.
Okay I know it doesnât need saying but Patience is just so fucking cool!!!!!
Jesus fucking christ, Fitz skilling out to Molly when he knows Will knows heâs alive and is looking for him is just⌠so dumb. So so dumb. I know heâs just fixating on her because heâs miserable and sheâs like this unsullied thing he had before everything went wrong but holy moly is it frustratingÂ
Not to mention he doesnât connect the dots between the fact that Burrich went to âhelp a friendâ and every time he reaches out for Molly he sees Burrich sajkdbshkhja dude
Nighteyes leaving just goes to show that Fitz cannot rely solely on Nighteyes for companionship. No matter how innately the same they are they are equally as innately different. Fitz needs Nighteyes but he shouldnât have JUST Nighteyes (which is why he, Nighteyes and the Fool are the holy trinity). When Nighteyes leaves, Fitz is in way too fragile a state to be left alone, but Nighteyes cannot think of the future or what might happen. All he knows is heâll be back at some point and thatâs all that matters.
âMy anger fed my competenceâ whatever you need to tell yourself sweetie
I think I had blocked out the fact the Regal was keeping animals trapped in filthy cages so they could ravage people in the kingâs circle uggggghhhhhhhhh I hate him
Fitz is down on himself saying that without Shrewdâs largesse, Chadeâs information and Verityâs protection his idea of himself has been stripped away and that heâs not actually competent etc. but like. This is an extreme situation!! Youâre literally alone in the wilderness with nothing and no one!! Who would thrive in this situation? And nobody gets by without help anyway! The people in our lives do define us to an extent. You donât have to be able to stand 100% on your own at all times with zero resources to be considered capable. Itâs human to depend on others. Yes I am chiding myself as much as Fitz here :))))
Burrichâs earring is the repressed gay earring. No I will not elaborate.
Fitz refusing to sell Burrichâs earring is frustrating yet something I would 100% do lol
Direct from my notes: Celery hiding out in caves?? Bad bitch
âI felt I was within the flames looking deeply into the Foolâs eyesâ um okay gay
Itâs actually surprising that Fitz admits he would not have gone after Molly even if he had known she was pregnant when she left. On one hand so self aware yet this doesnât stop him from completely idealising their relationship.
And then you have Molly who says he was supposed to come after her âso she could forgive himâ, that he was supposed to be the one to light the candles for her childbirth etc. The fact that she in any way thought he was mature enough to be a father just shows how little they really knew each other.
Burrich treating Molly like a horse while delivering Nettle is way funnier than it has a right to be jskakjasd makes me think of Dwight treating Phyllisâ back injury in The Office lol
The first thing Burrich notices about Nettle is that she has Chivalryâs brow are you fucking kidding me. Gay!
Fitz is Demisexual, Exhibit B: He had no interest in Tassin whatsoever until she literally started kissing him. At this point his body reacted, which is normal, but as soon as he got a second to actually think about it he stopped, because for him it would not be satisfying to sleep with someone he didnât have feelings for.
âIt seemed to take years for the dried beans and lentils to soften.â Okay mood
I love how Fitz just assumes Molly will take him back. âI have a woman and child awaiting me.â Says who bitch?
Small ferret? More like big legend
Ya know, we give Fitz so much shit but honestly with so much physical, mental and emotional stress on this journey how can we expect his mental faculties to be at 100%? I wouldnât be making good decisions either, in fact I would be long dead.
Starling telling Nik that the earring once belonged to Chivalry is truly a smooth brain move
âDo not fear, little brother, I am here to take care of you again.â Words canât explain how much I love Nighteyes and how often his dialogue makes me smile :â)
Itâs so cute how Nighteyes is worried about Molly and Nettle until he knows that Burrich is taking care of them
Itâs really interesting when Fitz claims âIâd rather be with Molly even if it meant rocking a crying baby in the middle of the nightâ because, well, heâs literally made other claims to the contrary, saying he wouldnât have gone with her even if heâd known she was pregnant. Because at the end of the day as much as Fitz is compelled by others to do work for the greater good, I think deep down a lot of the time it is what he would do anyway. Like I really donât think he could actually enjoy being with Molly knowing that the world is burning down around them. He would want to get out there and help somehow; not only to secure their own future but to reduce other peopleâs suffering as well. Heâs an empathetic boy even though heâd like to be selfish.
Every time Fitz calls Molly his wife I lose ten years off my life
Again, I understand why heâs thinking like this, but Fitzâs ownership of Molly is just so uncomfortable. The fact that he canât imagine her not having a place ready and waiting for him in her life when he returns just illustrates that she is not a fully realised person to him. She is just a comforting idea.
Oh yes, it was definitely Starlingâs âpillowtalkâ that got you captured and not the fact that you fit the exact description of the witted bastard right down to having Chivalryâs earring and a whole ass wolf
Somehow forgot that Jhaampe is basically a city of tents with only a few permanent buildings and people constantly coming and going
Fitzâs first words to the Fool are âIâve come to you.â Iâm gonna fucking die
Literally every single word from the moment Fitz realises itâs the Fool and starts describing him is a full body assault and personal attack I am seeking reparations
God the tenderness, the angst, the reliefâŚâŚâŚ shall i pass away
âI doubted he was much taller, but his body was no longer a childâs.â My dude this is a gay awakening if I ever saw one
Fitz be like *spends 87 pages describing the Fool in painstaking detail* anyway I love being a heterosexual male
Iâve heard ppl cite Fitzâs descriptions of Kettricken as evidence of a crush (hard disagree) but literally nothingggggg even comes close to the way he describes the Fool. Not just this once but over and over again itâs insane.
âTalk fell off between us. The bottle of brandy was empty. We were reduced to silence, staring at one another drunkenly.â skjakfnajghajgnaLNGJ is it gay to silently gaze into thine homieâs eyes
The Fool protecting Fitz from everyone - especially Starling - in Jhaampe is often hilarious and always heartwarming
Realising Fitz was skinny enough for the Fool to lift on his own ahhh no wonder he said the famous âWhen I recall how beautiful you wereâ line, Fitz is a total wreck
I love that the Fool actually gives Chade shit for his plan to take Nettle. I love him.
âToo few folk cared for me. I could not hate a single one of them.â Oh, Fitz :(
I always wonder how the Fool really feels about Molly. Is he jealous? Does he compare himself to this woman Fitz idolises and he doesnât know? Does he know that Fitz is barking up the wrong tree or is he stuck thinking Molly must really be Fitzâs soulmate since he wonât shut up about how much he loves her and canât wait to get back to her? He just never really lets on how it makes him feel when Fitz has relationships with women. We know Fitz gets jealous of the Fool (for litch rally like no reason lol), so with the Fool being much more honest with himself/in general about his love for Fitz and having much more legitimate reason to be jealous, is he? Or is it just something heâs made his peace with, that these women give Fitz something that he cannot? Is he okay with that cos he has to be or does he have a different, less monogamous view of love and relationships (he does have three parents after all). I dunnoooo dude I just have so many questions. Like obviously - OBVIOUSLY - if Fitz and the Fool didnât have romantic feelings for each other before, there is no doubting that romantic feelings appeared the moment Fitz appeared in the Foolâs hut. Fitz wonât admit that but mere chapters later the Fool is talking about how he loves Fitz in every way so like. He knows. So how does he feel when Fitz is calling out for Molly in his sleep, or openly speaking of seeking her out when all this is over, and lying to the Fool to protect Molly and his daughter. Really makes u think!!!!
Fitz reuniting with Sooty and going to see her every day in Jhaampe is so cuuuute and made me so happy. Sooty is a good girl :â)
Fitz be like *leans against the table where the Fool is carving and watches his fingers at work like a true repressed gay*
Verity is literally so strong???? He submerged himself in skill and was able to pull himself back from the stream can u imagine? Go off king!
Bro I literally canât with the Fool mentioning Jofron so casually and Fitz immediately thinking wow oh my god theyâre definitely fucking oh my god the Fool has a girlfriend - Fitz sweetie calm down
I love how Fitz and the Fool just naturally walk together :))) and Nighteyes babysitting Kettle is so cute
Molly never once says that she misses Fitz. She says she always expected him to do the right thing, to come after her and not leave her alone with a child. But she doesnât look back on their time together fondly or have much positive to say about him as a person. And all that is fair, but itâs also just⌠Not really the behaviour of someone whoâs been separated from their soulmate. Itâs more just someone whoâs been left in a shitty position by someone they cared about but hardly knew.
Fitz asking the Fool what is between him and Starling when theyâre literally just being civil is sooooo fucking funny. Not everyone finds the Fool as irresistible as you do, Fitz.
The Fool just casually finding a pretext to call Fitz the light of his life
Fitz telling Kettricken firmly that he will not travel if the Fool is ill is one of the only times he ever puts his foot down with her GEE I WONDER WHY
Iâve said it before Iâll say it againâŚâŚ there really do be something about the way Fitz canât meet the Foolâs eyesâŚâŚâŚ. Itâs not like theyâre weird and colourless anymore like they used to be!!!
The Fool already talking about Clerres in this book!
Fitz and the Fool and Nighteyes playing in the stream is too fucking pure omg, itâs what they deserve
And then Starling has to bloody ruin it bc sheâs homophobique
But seriously, Fitz actually lets go for the first time in ages and has a nice evening only for Starling to go tattling to Kettricken, and Kettricken having the gall to confront Fitz about it. And then Fitz solves the problem by saying he doesnât disdain her when like!! He has every right to!!!! She sold him out, sold his daughter out. She never even apologised but instead has just been totally petty and self-righteous and stirring up trouble amongst the group. She hasnât earned or even asked for his forgiveness. So fitting that sheâs the one constantly judging Fitz for his relationship with Lord Golden in Tawny Man lol, she just cannot let Fitz and the Fool be the queer icons they are!!!
Verrrrrrrrrrry interesting that Fitz only âsuddenly missed the human warmth and comfortâ of Starling taking his arm or sleeping against him literally IMMEDIATELY after the plumbing and love confrontation with the Fool. I mean he has been doing all of those things with the Fool (sleeping together, walking arm in arm etc.) so itâs not about human touch at all, itâs about convincing himself that a WOMANâS touch is somehow inherently different.
He does the same thing with Starling as with Kettricken. She technically apologises but itâs not sincere and thatâs not why he forgives her. Same as Kettricken, she tells her sob story and he canât hold onto his anger. It makes sense, but itâs just very toxic. It would be nice if at least one person would really recognise how much theyâve hurt Fitz and really, genuinely want to atone for it, or apologise without expecting forgiveness. The onus should not be on Fitz to forgive Starling but on Starling to grow up and not need Fitz to like her in order to remain civil and do what they have to. Also âI do not find your wit bond offensiveâ has the same energy as someone telling you out of nowhere like âItâs fine that youâre gay :)â like wow thank u?? lol
Fitz is Demisexual, Exhibit C: âI wanted her with a desperation that had nothing to do with love, and even, I believe, little to do with lust.â
âBy his love he is betrayed, and his love betrayed also.â So fate agrees with me, Fitz and the Fool are in love? :)
Anytime the potential that Fitz might have to choose between Molly and Nighteyes I lose brain cells. Thatâs ur brother Fitz!!! Itâs not even a choice!! How dare u
Itâs just sooooo intentionally laid out for us in this book that Fitzâs relationship with Molly really wasnât good or healthy and that his fixation on it is misguided, and I think thatâs why I struggled sooooo hard with the ending of Foolâs Fate, because it kind of implied the exact opposite. Iâm hoping on this reread I will pick up on it being laid out as a result of Fitz getting his memories/teen feelings back rather than it just feeling like a lowkey retcon, but I guess weâll see lol
âI felt I was a bit in love with him, you know. That sort of lift to the heart.â the confirmation that the Fool KNOWS HOW IT FEELS TO BE IN LOVE sends me deep into the swamps goodbyeeeeeeeeeeee
âThe one who loves him best will betray him most foully.â So fate agrees, the Fool loves Fitz best :)
âYou do love me! ⌠Before, it was words. I always feared it was born out of pity.â Godddddd Foooooooooool!!!!!!!!!!!Â
Everything about Fitz, the Fool and Nighteyes meeting in the skill for the first time is just truly perfect iconic unparalleled.
Fitzâs love for Verity hurts my heart so much. Just think of the relationship they could have had if they werenât stupid royals.
Kettleâs whole speech about Fitz and Molly⌠Just yes to every word.
Look Iâm just gonna say it⌠The way Burrich reacts to Mollyâs advances ⌠like I know itâs probably not intentional but it just reads as very much fitting in with my headcanon that he is gay. As soon as she makes it clear she wants to sleep with him he like leaps across the room lol. I do believe he cares for her and loves her in his way, but it does feel mostly like heâll just do whatever he needs to to care for her and the baby. Sowwy
I wonder why the Fool wasnât as affected by his giving up of memories to Girl-on-a-Dragon?? Or was he, and he just gets them back before we see him again in Tawny Man?
âTake my hurt that I never knew my father, take my hours of staring up at his portrait when the great hall was empty and I could do so alone.â um this is so fucking sad
It was the Fool who sent Starling to find Fitz after Verity uses his body and again I have to ask, wtf is going on in your mind, Fool!
Fitz is Demisexual, Exhibit D: Even once he actually sleeps with Starling he has no enthusiasm about it, he just kind of goes along with it, likely to prove to himself that he has really let go of his past/Molly.Â
I always wonder why the Fool leaves now. Is it because he thinks their work is done and doesnât want to risk messing things up by hanging around his catalyst like at the end of Tawny Man? Does he intend to come back and find Fitz again but get sidetracked by a lead or a new dream? Like itâs just weird because at first he was like âProphet and Catalyst stick togetherâ and was gonna stay with Fitz - or was that just an excuse because he was obsessed with Girl-on-a-Dragon? Fool u spicy lil enigma
Itâs blood and the wit that wakes the stone dragons so does that mean King Wisdom was witted? Or is that obvious lol
Fitz isnât even bothered by the Foolâs kiss, just shocked. I am looking.
Patience shouting orders at Verity-as-Dragon is beautiful ksjjk
Of courrrrrssse Burrich names his first son Chivalry
In the epilogue, the Fool is the only one Fitz actually says he misses. Exquisite.
I know some people have an issue with Regalâs death but personally I find it delicious
Okay thatâs all (I say as if this wasnât 139841989 pages long). See yâall in 92 years when my sister finally starts reading Liveship!

Favourite RotE Book: Fool's Fate
Why: When I finished this book I burst into my poor roommateâs bedroom and told her the entire Fitz and Fool ending with lots of backtracking to explain their history and I have never been so passionately annoying. I was going on and on about destiny and love. And for the rest of the book: I love that Fitz gets to employ his training in a way that doesn't require assassination. He is actually pretty competent in the Out Islands. We all point out what a dunce Fitz can be, but heâs pretty smart if thereâs no major moral dilemma! Also plenty of great interaction with the Fool prior to the amazing and intense ending. Oh, and also reconciliation with lost loved ones. And adding new loved ones to the Farseer family!
Top Three Favourite Characters: Fitz, Fool/Beloved, Kettricken, honorable mention to Sedric
Top Three Least Favourite Characters: Kennit is a great character although I hate him. Early Malta drives me nuts, which isn't really her fault but still. Itâs hard to pick characters I actually dislike. I feel a little bad, but I guess I donât like Starling much? Sheâs selfish with otherâs needs and feelings if it benefits her. I think she can be pretty callous. I am happy her life takes a better turn though. Oh and King Shrewd. His treatment of family like tools and his need for secrecy threw the Six Duchies into political instability, and more personally, damaged Fitz horribly.
Favourite Ship (of the floating kind): Vivacia! I like her passion and think her internal conflict is interesting. People like Paragon a lot, but heâs kind of too sad for me. Oh I also like Tarman.
Top Three Favourite Ships (of the people kind): I think Iâll elaborate after I list. Fitz/Fool, Fitz/Molly, Alise/Leftrin, honorable mentions to Kettricken/Verity and Sedric/Carson
I think most people agree on Fitz/Fool, but gotta say, itâs not so important to me for there to be sexual intimacy. I think their emotional connection is enough. Itâs so strong and so moving!
A lot of people donât like Fitz/Molly. Their first trilogy romance is pretty turbulent, but their feelings are sincere. Not that feelings count for everything, but Fitz/Fool hurt each other all the time too and I think both relationships grow and mature by the last series. Fitz and Molly were happy together in Foolâs Assassin. Fitz has a lifetime of trauma that still makes him a bit closed off, but he does his best and they have learned to make it work. Removed from political instability, Molly and Fitz have a happy, stable marriage.
Not much to say about Alise and Leftrin. I just think theyâre cute. Kind of the same with Sedric and Carson. Big fan of both couplesâ emotional healing angle.
Kettricken and Verity are so tragic. I think they had all the makings of a wonderful Queen and King and suited each other well. A lot of stuff got in the way, but they both respect the other passionately. I wish they could have had more time.
Would you rather be Witted or Skilled: First impulse is skilled even though the lack of knowledge makes it more dangerous! It just speaks to my childhood heart. I might also be stressed if I could constantly sense all life around me.
If you were Witted, what animal would you bond with?: A pigeon. :) But if weâre going a little more classic/classy, I would do a crow or a starling.
Would you rather live in the Outislands, the Mountain Kingdom, the Six Duchies, Bingtown, the Rain Wilds, Kelsingra, Jamaillia, the Pirate Isles, or Foolâs Homeland?:
Tough... the Mountain Kingdom lifestyle seems pretty hard, but that sense of community canât be beat. Foolâs homeland sounds idyllic but thatâs probably the nostalgia talking.
How were you introduced to the books? I saw the first book on a list of top 100 fantasy books. Then a friend found out I was reading the first trilogy and told me to check out the Liveship series next.
Share a quote you love: I have a terrible memory for quotes, and I really like whole passages from these books! I guess for crushing emotion, âmy dream was dead in my armsâ takes the cake. Iâm actually really into this entry in the first trilogy about the Witted. Itâs kind of this capitalist dystopian take on why they should not be trusted. Paraphrasing - a Witted person cannot be controlled - you cannot bend them to your will and use their labor.
Tagging: I was tagged by basically the only blog I know that likes Realm of the Elderlings. If you see this and want to do it, please go for it!
Take the thing, copy and paste it into your own post, tag it âelderlingsâ and then tag as many people as you can that you know in the fandom.
#wow i got tagged!#gosh that makes me happy but also this fandom needs to be bigger if i'm a visible member!#elderlings#rote#realm of the elderlings

Foolâs Quest: Fitz and the Fool Rundown
And now we wait together @sonnetscrewdriver!
Plot/Setting/Narrative
Iâm so embarrassed for my son Rap-a-taskal.Â
Getting ahead of myself here but take a chill pill kid.Â
Calm your Tellator tits.Â
Actually, screw it! lets start at âthe endâ:
Iâm officially caught up now and Iâve been digging around the internet lurking on forums trying to soak up art/discussions/opinions Iâve been avoiding for months.
And the most interesting fannish thing Iâve uncovered is how lots of people are treating Tellator and Rap as two different people - Iâve read several discussions and threads where Tellator was being thought of and referred to as almost like a parasite or something.
I personally didnât get that vibe when reading Rain Wilds.Â
I donât view Rapskal as an innocent bystander taken over by an insidious and other entity, but I can totally see how folks can see it that way so power to them I suppose.
Time and Parenting really come to a point at the end of this book, bounded tight within the thrill of having these two Realm of the Elderlings character axisâ finally meeting!:Â
And we the reader are, now, FAR more knowledgeable about the magics and histories of the Realm than any one character present! Funny how time and managing our narrative children will do that, huh? ;D
Iâm of the personal opinion that the Elderlings are going to be too thankful and indebted to Fitz to really head the level of retribution Rapskal will demand - but that doesnât mean Fitz wonât make matters worse with his paranoia and how he expects to be treated (Fitzâs âI-deserve-to-sufferâ self loathing really reeks in this book and I have no doubt it will harm more than help in the early stages of Assassinâs Fate)Â
But oh! I canât wait to see my Elderling darlings and Six Duchies nerds mingle more!Â
And yes, I do think Rapskal will continue to be an asshole.Â
Iâm invested in Rapskal though and I canât wait to see what his deal is and how heâll affect the story.Â
I donât know about yâall but I feel Rap is being set up to have some big part to play - but Iâve no clue if itâll be direct or indirect lol. TIME WILL TELL!
If I had to guess right now (and Iâm going to because why not) Iâd guess that at the moment Rapskal probably struggles, that he is antagonistic, because he is outside of the narrativeâs âReflection & Parenting as Changeâ theme and may never fold into that current because of his choice to skip adolescence via-memory stones.Â
Rapskal doesnât have a lot to reflect back on, or maybe the issue is he has too much memory or doesnât reflect at all and only looks forward forward forward. And we know he isnât a parent as Nortel told us.
Frankly I hope Rapskal can learn from Fitz and/or Amber, Iâd like to see him fold back into the narrative flow rather than swim decidedly against it (not that he isnât uninteresting for doing so, quite the opposite really).
Maybe Rapskal will find something to reflect back on? Maybe heâll refuse?Â
But enough about Rapskal!Â
THYMARAâS WINGS ARE SO BIG NOW. *gasp* I love her.Â
Do you think when our Six Duchies party leaves Kelsingra theyâll ride down the Rain Wilds River on Tarman?!Â
*muffled screeching*
Okay okay okay Iâm sorry, back into a Fitz and the Fool Rundown not Kristie has deep love for Rain Wilders Giggling.
Fitz
This dummy.Â
Donât get me wrong; temperament wise this older Fitz is still my favorite but heâs also so full of grief and self loathing heâs practically useless mid-book.
And thatâs fine, Hobb as always does a great job with making me understand Fitz.
But still - OH MY GOD.
Youâve done a lot wackier and intensely strange stuff than admit your daughter is the result of your BFF, your wolf-brother, and yourselfâs souls mingling Fitz!Â
You even come to terms with that fact, even if simply choosing to ignore it for the most part that still means youâve acknowledged it - youâre willing to painstakingly mine information from any and everyone but you donât tell Beloved about your daughterâs dream journal?
Um??? WHAT???
Wake up dude.Â
Just poor decisions left and right.Â
Needless to say I was very frustrated with Fitz for a while but we worked through it.Â
Oh my god I frigginâ cried when Starling sung her Epic and Fitz was recognized by the court though, oh man that was so satisfying and mystifying and wondrous.Â
Iâm glad Fitz has for the most part gotten over his issues with Amber and the Foolâs various identities and seems very accepting of Ash and Spark.Â
Bee
Nooooo!
I mean, âNoâ to Bee still being on her own but mostly âNoâ about Bee slowly being blocked out of the narrative perspective!Â
NOOOO
Iâd be fascinated to find out how long she was in the Pillar. Based on the narrative we read and assume sheâs wandering about around the same time Fitz and company are but weâve been given nothing in evidence of that.Â
INTERESTING
Stay safe my little piglet!Â
The Fool
Yes.
YES.
Iâm very intrigued to learn more about Belovedâs dragon blood transformation and what knowledge will come with it.
What will happen if the dragon is truly dead, who will guide their transformation?Â
ME THINKS FITZ
But, uh, yeah.
While it was uncomfortable I was rather happy that Fool got angry at Fitz and had no trouble telling him to step off.Â
I wasnât very pleased with Fitz myself at the time, I was a bit smug about him getting a tray full of food plopped in his lap. Â
Well done.
I really hope to witness more of Ash and Spark and The Foolâs bond!Â
Beloved has been alone for so long, has had the opposite later life to Fitz and his massive family.Â
And what better than taking in and giving shelter to a son and a daughter?Â
Good stuff.Â
Shun AKA Shine
CALLED IT.
Oh Shine, you poor dear.Â
Shine will become an asset to Nettle, I imagine, and I desperately hope she heals and that Kettricken can guide her well and that court does Shine good.Â
Iâm livid and just overall done with Chade, Iâm serious.
I feel as though Iâve given Chade benefit of the doubt over and over again and it isnât like he is an evil person or claims to be something he isnât - but uuugh what the hell?
If youâre mister cloak and dagger spider web master maybe reel in some goddamn self control and think ahead on the consequences of your personal actions instead of just those of your King and various eyes within the kingdom, come the fuck on dude.
What an idiot sending both his children to a grieving Fitz and for not following up with any information for his children OR for Fitz.
Iâd be so upset if I were Shine, I wouldât be surprised if she drugs him.
Itâd be poetic in a twisted away.Â
Why did Chade hide Shine from others as well as from herself? What was he thinking, that sheâd have to become less shallow, vain, and self-centered before heâd bestow upon her the depths of her lineage?Â
Chade moans about being denied learning to Skill because he was a bastard but zip! he seals up his bastard daughterâs power because ???Â
????!!!!!
ANYWAYÂ
Iâm glad Shine is safe and that she and Bee came to a functioning relationship even if not one ripe with mutual meaning and growth. Â
Lant
Chade-light 2.0 and I arenât hitting it off so well but Iâm trying to keep a level head about this sassy lost child.
His biggest sin is that he is boring.Â
Or, well, I think my real issue with Lant is that heâs young.Â
So young.Â
Oddly young.
Older than Per or Ash or Spark yes but younger than them somehow; he doesnât see, he doesnât listen, he doesnât seem to even think for himself.
Rolling about in his self pity that he canât bang his sister doesnât help endure him to me either but you know, Iâll take Riddleâs advice and let time and space do itâs thing so maybe by the time the third book comes out Iâll have cooled on Lant.Â
Ash/Spark
OH SHIT.
I love themmmmmm.
Oh my god.
Iâm really really really hoping that Ash, Spark, Per, and Bee are going to be Gen 2 of Elderling mayhem and stories.Â
Thatâd be golden.
Smart as a whip and willing to make their own choices, thatâs Ash and Spark.Â
Brilliant.
Perseverance
Talk about stickinâ to your name!
Per is a sweetie and I really need to stop but I canât help but see him as my son Charlie.Â
Which is amazing - but gutting at the same time lol.
What have I done?!
Per is perfection and I really hope Fitz does right by him and of everyone traveling now I feel like Per will help Fitz the most as far as his inner space goes.Â
Per has a understanding and relationship with Bee outside of Fitzâs understanding of his daughter and I think Fitzâll need to hear about that and mine Perâs perseverance as their quest wears on.Â
Highlighted Passages
I smiled as the royal family passed, tears of pride stinging my eyes. Our doing, the Foolâs and mine.
âVengeance?â I asked quietly. âItâs a poor motive for doing anything. Vengeance doesnât undo what they did. Doesnât restore whatever they destroyed.â
âSometimes thanking someone is more important to the person giving the thanks than the one who receives it.â
âI thought you had come here in fury over what I did to you as we passed through the Skill-pillars.â He stepped back from me. âOh, Iâll leave that to Nettle. If she hasnât blasted the skin from your flesh with her words yet, youâve that to look forward to.
I could not think about it at the moment. I tried so hard, but there was just not enough time or enough of me. And trying was not doing.
Safe. As if âsafeâ were more important than anything else.
With the instincts of all bullies, they knew that eventually she would have to emerge. Then, in the way of their kind, they would peck her to death for being different.
âAh, Fitz. I can always trust you to have some sort of bizarre problem that breaks my ennui.â
She breathed as if she had run over nine hills. I stared at her. She had been a stranger, a lover, a nemesis, and a betrayer to me. And now she was my historian.
âWhy does understanding come so late to us?â
War and hardship had hardened them; I understood that, but it did not mean that I wished to see my own folk mocked or disdained that they were not likewise hardened.
But all fires, of wood or grief, burn down to ashes eventually.
âDoing something stupid and reckless is not a better proof of your love than doing something measured and powerful.â
âKeeping a child from harm is not the same as rearing one.â
âSteady, Iâm pregnant, not ill.â
Both logic and love anchored me where I was and doomed me to the suffocation of waiting.
âEvery one of them has witnessed what the Servants have done to their fellows. And each has chosen to serve them rather than defy them. Every one of them is more treacherous than you can imagine.â
Once one knows what heartless people can do, it cannot be entirely forgotten. It always remains among the possible things that can befall you.
âPut it behind you, and think about it again in twenty years. Whatever it was, you canât change it. So stop clinging to it, and let time and distance do their work.â
âI always fail the people I love the most.â âSay rather that you judge yourself more harshly than anyone else ever has.â
âNo soup! Anything I can bite and chew. Or crunch! Is there anything crunchy?â
âThat I guessed,â Malta said knowingly. âWhen first I saw him, I felt as if I already knew him.â She smiled at me as if we shared a jest. I smiled back, without understanding.
âWorrying doesnât solve anything. I know that. In one way I know it but in another it seems wrong. It seems that if I donât think about all the things that hurt, all the things Iâve done wrong, then I donât really care.â

Realm of the Quarantine Reread End-of-Book Questionnaire: Assassinâs Apprentice
Any differences between your first/previous reading experience and this one?
Uhhhhh yep!! I canât even believe how different it was. Every scene has taken on an entirely different colour and flavour in my memory. I skimmed far too much the first time, yes, but also I just went into it with the wrong framework. I think Iâve mentioned this before but my mum recommended me these books on the basis of my love of A Song of Ice and Fire. She directly compared them and said how similar they were. Because of RotEâs length I had been putting it off for years, and only finally picked up Assassinâs Apprentice because I was itching to do an ASOIAF reread but was (and am) trying to wait until Winds of Winter to do it.Â
So you can imagine the difficulty settling into a book like Assassinâs Apprentice when youâre expecting Game of Thrones. I remember my overall impression on my first read being that it was a pretty standard fantasy novel with the only really exceptional thing about it being the characters and their relationships. Characters are always my top priority so it was enough to keep me invested and progressing onto the next book and the rest of the series, but I did so not having absorbed nearly as much as I should have from the first book in the series.
Now, just from revisiting that first book, my understanding of Fitz and the world he operates in has exponentially increased and I know that will transform my experience of every book going forward. I really made sure to make myself slow down and read every word; absorb descriptions and just be in each moment without racing to the next one. Overall this book (and all the Fitz books) are much more concerned with the human condition and the effects of abuse and trauma and deep loneliness than being an epic fantasy. In fact it barely reads like fantasy at all; itâs incredibly grounded and focused. Of course the elements are there, but while Assassinâs Apprentice may not be as subversive as the rest of the series, it is certainly not generic fantasy. This book just feels alive to me now in a way it didnât before against the rest of the series. I can regard it as a beautiful piece of the puzzle in its own right instead of just the setup. I wanna reiterate I always really liked Assassinâs Apprentice but it just paled in comparison to my unholy obsession with the rest of it. Idk this reread just really shifted a lot of things into perspective for me and Iâm excited!!
Something you canât believe you forgot
So so much but most ridiculous GALEN IS QUEEN DESIREâS BASTARD am I dumb??? I didnât even remember until it was explicitly stated lol
Favourite character introduction moments/scenes
Itâs gotta be a tie between the Fool, Kettricken and Patience (realising there is a common theme here of Fitz making an idiot of himself). I genuinely was laughing so hard when Fitz is like, actively making himself smaller and so pleased with himself trying to help the Fool, and of course the Foolâs iconic âlisten you idiotâ ugh itâs just chefâs kiss baby, thatâs what we in the biz call a meet-cute! (I know they have seen each other before, but this is the first time the Fool talks to Fitz). Then of course we have Kettricken who poisons Fitz at their first meeting, and Patience who Fitz continuously embarrasses himself in front of before even realising who she is. The fact that all three of these people end up being some of Fitzâs only genuinely loving relationships makes it even better.
Favourite character arcs
I think Iâve gotta go with Verity and Burrich. Verity goes from kind of a blokeâs bloke (he was so different in the beginning than I remembered!) to being a proper King-in-Waiting. He is self-sacrificial but not for pride; he genuinely cares deeply for his people, as a whole and as individuals, and will do anything it takes to protect them. He is far from perfect, and he could have done a lot more for Fitz when he was younger, but once Fitz is in his eyeline and he is confronted with the life the boy has led he seems suitably shamed and tries to do his best for him. Heâs a good boy and I love him!
Burrich of course is just. unlucky. His health deteriorates due to injuries. He gets saddled with some kid and is burdened to bring him up to an impossible standard he has set himself (to not shame a man he has an impossibly high opinion of). Heâs deprived of a job he loved and was good at, and most importantly heâs deprived of his boyfriend I mean lover I mean âmasterâ.
His arc is not a happy one at all but it is compelling, and I canât help but love him and feel for him despite also disagreeing with him on almost everything :)
Favourite quote/s
Unfortunately I donât have any tabs atm so I couldnât really keep track, but my heart exploded when Fitz said to the Fool after going into his room, âI wish I had a place that were as much me as that place is you.â
Favourite relationships
Fitz/Fool obviously. Even though they donât have that many interactions in this book I loved every single one of them. The Fool volunteering to care for Smithy after Fitz has endured a long day of horrendous abuse is just!!!!! Kindness! What a concept! I could really see why they develop such a deep bond so quickly.
Fitz/Burrich is just so real and so compelling and it hurts me but I love it. Fitz/Chade breaks my heart bc Chade is manipulating his way into Fitzâs heart - I think without realising it a lot of the time bc he is lonely too, but the power imbalance is not okay when he is the centre of Fitzâs world for a long time and the closest thing he has to a friend. Knowing how Chade behaves not too much later just makes it even worse when he is so nice in this book because it just shows why Fitz has such a hard time being his own person and saying no to Chade ever.
Fitz/Verity for obvious reasons. Fitz/Hands!! Theyâre cute but it makes me sad that Hands betrays him in AQ. Weirdly I liked Fitz/Molly way more this time but more their friendship than anything. And next is Royal Assassin and their deeply toxic romance soooooo.
And Fitz and his puppies BUT WE DONâT TALK ABOUT THAT.
Favourite setting
Do yourself a favour and read the description of the Mountain Kingdom and specifically the palace. It is STUNNING and something I completely skimmed over the first time cos Iâm a dumb idiot bitch I could have been picturing a city of huge colourful tulips all this time but fuck me I guess!!
Favourite chapter
As a rereader I think Iâve gotta say chapter one. Thereâs just so much to pick apart all crammed into one chapter. It still holds a lot of mystery even when youâve read the entire series.
Most loved character
At this point Iâve gotta say Fitz. Thatâs who my heart is with during this book and he NEEDS IT
Most hated character
Okay I found Regal a much better villain on this read and hated him A LOT but whomst I despised even more w the very fibre of my being was Galen bitch disgusting!!!!!! Verity was so like, smug?? when he killed him and it was so satisfying. Itâs what she deserves!!
Raise your hand if youâve been personally victimised by Robin Hobb (most heartbreaking and/or visceral moments)
Literally this whole book was so harsh and I was perpetually emo throughout but off the top of my head, Fitzâs depressive episode after Shrewd and Chade test his loyalty fricking broke me, as did the entirety of Galenâs abuse/training; since I was paying so much more attention this time it hit a lot harder that he is an absolute textbook abuser and the psychological torment he inflicts on Fitz is just. deeply upsetting to say the least. It really got under my skin.
Details, observations, spoilery notes made with the benefit of the full picture
Okay this is where I just dump all the notes I took while reading that donât fit anywhere else. Itâll be long lol so strap in.
- Itâs never not funny to me that Narrator Fitz comes across as like a hundred years old when in actuality he is like twenty. Also that he looks back on himself with such a sense of wisdom and superiority, yet we know there is dumbarsery aplenty to come. Amazing.
- Iâve never really registered that for the first six years of his life Fitz had a mother who loved him and I donât know how to feel about that
- REVELATION THAT SEEMS REALLY OBVIOUS IN HINDSIGHT: Fitz most likely only spoke Chyurdan when he was abandoned, which would have played a huge role in why he was not only quiet but unresponsive to what was happening around him. He probably didnât even understand that he wasnât going to see his mother again until much later, and he didnât know how to ask questions. When he goes to the Mountain Kingdom and Kettricken comments that he speaks Chyurdan like someone remembering the language he doesnât comment on it, so itâs likely that future Fitz doesnât register that he didnât always speak Six Duchies(?). He mentions in the narration that the memory of being abandoned is incredibly stark but not necessarily reliable, and possibly shaped by the Skill, which to me opens up the possibility that his memory is essentially auto-translating for him things he didnât understand at the time. We also know that at the time of writing this heâs given up his memories of his mother etc. up to the stone dragon, so obviously his recollections of these traumatic events are going to be warped by that. Anyway thanks to my sister for pointing this out and being much smarter than me.
- According to Fitzâs grandfather, Chivalry always knew about Fitz. Donât know how trustworthy a man desperate to yeet his grandson out of his care is but there ya go.
- Weird and hilarious that Shrewd tries to see Fitz on the day he arrives but then just like. What? Forgets about him? For years? lol
- Chade literally tells Fitz that he is a kingâs man now and thatâs the most important thing about him YIKES
- Chade becomes the closest thing Fitz has to a friend for quite a long time and that is fucking depressing
- Itâs interesting that Chade had to be convinced to teach Fitz. Itâs hinted at that there was an ~incident~ the last time they tried to train someone, followed by a long period of Chade being left to rot in the walls.
- Not to be out here diagnosing fictional characters but like.Fitz. Literally has depression.
- Fitz having to turn down Fedwrenâs offer of apprenticing for him is so sad. Itâs the life Fitz should have had.
- The Foolâs non-binary gender is mentioned as early as Chapter Nine! (Published in 1995! We have no choice but to stan!)
- âSo quickly we were all made accomplices in our own degradation.â OOF.
- I really realised this time that the reason Fitz seems so shit at things he trained his whole life for later is because all that training was interrupted by many months of isolation, deprivation and abuse. All at the age of like 13-14. He got out of the habit of subconsciously acting in a way that Burrich or Chade would approve of. For a long time the only person he needed approval from was Galen, and he became completely single-minded about it because that was his means of survival. And you donât just recover from that - especially since neither Chade or Burrich would give him the time of day for an extended period *after* his training was done. When Chade did finally talk to him again it wasnât to recommence training really; he just gave him a bunch of tasks to do. By the time Fitz got to the Mountain Kingdom he was completely out of practice, and still managed pretty bloody well in spite of it.
- Kind of related to the last point: I love that while Fitz isnât a savant at anything heâs a pretty realistic jack of all trades. He not only has an aptitude for learning almost any skill or subject but a genuine broad curiosity too. Itâs one of the few things that is just him, ya know? Itâs just his personality and something he can find joy in, even if it does also factor into his being used by others.
- Imagine being Burrich and finding out that your son thought you were a dog murderer for like ten years lol ouch
- Fitz thinks about the Fool soooo often in the Mountain Kingdom, pointing out things that remind him of him, or things he would like. Itâs v soft tbh I love them so much!!
- Another dumb thing I forgot is that Regal is convinced that Shrewd had Fitz poison his mother to death, which adds a rather important layer onto his motivations lol
Anyone doing a reread feel free to fill this out! You donât have to use the tag :)
