read more of my king!simon blurbs here
you werenât expecting to have a good morning when you made your way up to simonâs chambers.
the previous night you had sent simon to bed with a suspected fever and obvious congestion in his chest. it was a miracle you were even able to get him out of the bathtub - him complaining of a chill in the room. his head felt warm when you were washing his hair and at the mention of you notifying his doctor he brushed you off, âiâll just sleep it off.â
you had rolled your eyes at him and while you picked out extra layers for him to sleep in you formed a plan to stop by his secretaryâs chambers to advise him to send notice to the doctor before making your way to your own chambers for some much needed rest.
his chamber door was already open when you arrived and youâre shocked to already see his secretary and the doctor in the room. you knew simon wouldnât have just âslept it offâ and that he would have just woken up even worse off than he was last night and grumpy. but seeing that he was being poked and prodded so early in the morning by his doctor and having his ear talked off by his secretary had you letting out a heavy sigh before stepping into the room.
âoh, simon.â you whispered, voice laced with pity as you took in his ill appearance, face pale and clammy as you approached his bed.
âoh, nice of you to finally join us.â his secretary quipped in a pissy tone.
âwatch it.â simon tried to warn but his voice was choked and raspy. he had gotten worse throughout the night, most likely up coughing. he must be so tired and sore.
the doctor just ignores the two men, instead turning to you with a smile,âgood morning, my dear.â he was an older gentlemen, having taken care of simon throughout his entire rule as king. you liked him, he respected you and took none of simonâs shit. âiâm very glad you sent for me, our highness has a substantial fever and thereâs a rattling in his chest when he coughs that iâm not particularly fond of.â
before you can respond to the doctor, simonâs secretary is cutting in, âwell, sir, it was actually me who sent for you.â
âif it wasnât for her you wouldnât even know that i was fucking sick, now would you?â even with one of his muscled arms flung over his face simon was still able to spit venom.
you couldnât stop a satisfied smile from tugging at your lips. the secretary has never cared for you and you in turn had never cared for him.
âalright, iâve seen enough.â the doctor sat up from simonâs bed, ignoring the secretary completely to reach into his bag for a vial of a thick dark liquid. âhe should take this syrup once this morning and once before bed. heâll need lots of fluids and even more rest. i trust that heâs in good hands.â
you couldnât help but blush, you had always taken pride in your work with simon despite all the rumors swirling around the castle, and it felt good to have someone recognize it. âthank you, sir. and thank you for coming on such short notice, hopefully with your help simon will be better soon.â
after giving well wishes to simon the doctor was off and it was just simon, the secretary, and you left in the room. you looked at him expectantly and when he made no motion to leave you two alone you reminded him, âwell, the doctor said he needed rest.â
the secretary cut his eyes between you and simon before finally objecting, âwell, your highness, what about all of your appointments today? you a meeting regarding the peace treaty with-â
âcancel them!â simon barked. âdoes it look like iâll be making an appearance anywhere today, you twat?â
you never really liked it when simon got mean like this, reminded you too much of your separate classes and ranks within the castle. but right now, you were enjoying his little display of power.
âbut, but-â the secretary balked, âwhat if i go in your absence, sir?â
âfine,â simon conceded, âanything to get you out here. and just take notes.â he added.
âthank you, sir.â the secretary seemed elated at this opportunity. you had always thought of him as a little weasel, sticking close to simon just to climb his way up in the royal court. simon kept him around simply because he couldnât be arsed to find a replacement for him. âi wonât let you down.â
and with that, it was finally just the two of you. you walked the few steps to the end of his bed, taking in his large figure hidden underneath blankets and shawls. âwhat am i going to do with you, your highness?â
âfeel like my heads going to split in two, love.â he complained.
âaww,â you teased, âwould the baby like a cold cloth for his forehead?â
he pulled his arm away from his face just enough for you to see his eyes. you could tell he was taking his time trying to come up with a response. you were prepared for him to come back with something equally as childish as your teasing was but instead he just sagged his shoulders and said, âyes, please.â
you walked to his bathroom with a smile on your face and a warm, fluttery feeling in your chest.

a couple of dad!simon headcanons âĄ
- hello! i'm sun, and this is my new writing account! i haven't written properly in years, so please go easy on me!
simon âghostâ riley x fem!reader
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
⌠simon never imagined having a family of his own. even after the first few years of being together, the thought never crossed his mind. until your best friend had a baby...
your best friend was visiting with her newborn and seeing you holding the baby flipped a switch in his head. you smiled and cooed at him, causing the baby to flash a toothless smile. there was a twinkle in your eye that he hadnât noticed before and he pictured you glowing so beautifully as you held your own daughter, a mini version of you and him all in one. he didnât bring it up for weeks as he thought it through himself. was having a family even possible for him? was he just being selfish?
⌠it comes up one day after you notice heâd been unusually quiet while spending time together. he wasnât the most talkative, but he enjoyed conversations with you, even joking here and there.
âis everything okay, si? youâve been extra quiet today.â
âhmm, yeah. just been zoning off.â he shrugs, unsure how to approach the subject. he knows you would listen but he doesnât know how heâd react if your answer was no.
deciding rejection is better than never knowing, he sharply inhales, âhave you ever thought about having children?â
the question throws you off, certainly random for a guy who doesnât speak much of the future. you sit for a second debating your answer, and simonâs chest clenches in anxious anticipation.
âi have a few times, nothing too serious though. it never seems like thereâs a good time for us.â
he nods in agreement, âbeen thinking about it these days. maybe itâs something we can consider.â
⌠needless to say, you both decide after many conversations and more time, that expanding your family is something youâre open to. you stop your contraception soon after and begin trying. he becomes even more attentive, constantly checking in with you and doing plenty of research on how to make your pregnancy easy. he gets you anything you want - whenever you want. and back and foot massages become part of your everyday routine.
⌠recognizes that he won't always be around because of his extremely demanding work. he checks in whenever he can, even writing letters if he has to. it breaks his heart having to miss doctor appointments and weekly milestones with you, but you always know he tries his absolute best for you two.
⌠simon loves skin to skin contact for the first few months. he loves to lay with her against his chest and drift off to the tv while you take a quick shower. he finds himself just watching her a lot, trying to memorize every movement her tiny body makes.
⌠soooo protective. no kisses, no pets, no sick people, doesnât allow anything that could be of risk near her. he always has the two of you in his sight, preferring to push the stroller as you walk on the side of him.
⌠he's not one to care for style, so you do the main planning for the nursery. he builds all of the furniture for you while you watch. he looks so hot in his grey sweats and a black t-shirt that you can't help but distract him a few times.
⌠it's a hard adjustment for him having to return for a mission after she's born. he spends his entire last day holding and watching her, a sad slouch in his shoulders.
"gonna miss you so much, darlin. i'll be back as soon as i can," he whispers, gently kissing her forehead before handing her back to you. simon's hands grip your waist, pulling you in close to kiss you deeply before resting his forehead against yours. "i need my girls to stay safe. ill update you when i can, dove."
whenever he can, he scrolls though his videos on his phone just to see her face. her eyes twinkle brighter than any star to him and a slight smile creeps under his mask.
⌠relieves you from baby care when he can tell youâre exhausted. sighing and pulling yourself out of bed when crying erupts through the baby monitor. he doesnât get up at first, but when the crying continues for a minute, he comes to check on you. he pushes the door cracked door open, revealing you desperately hushing and bouncing her in your arms. your eyes are tired and heavy, wishing for a few hours of uninterrupted sleep.
âi got âer. go back to bed love,â simon says, taking his baby girl into his arms.
you give him a weak smile and a thankful squeeze at his arm, walking straight to bed without another peep. he holds her close to his chest as he sits down in the chair, propping her neck up as he stares down at her. her eye color matches his, but she resembles you more and more everyday. heâs enamored by her, his beautiful little girl that he created with the love of his life.
she quiets down shortly, falling back asleep in his arms as he rocks her slowly. his own eyes grow heavy, and he sets her down in her crib before returning back to bed. he climbs in behind you, pulling your back to his chest and planting a soft kiss on the side of your neck.
âif she wakes up again iâll take care of it. you just sleep darling,â simon whispers, receiving a hum in response from you as you snuggle into him.
he takes care of his girls so well.
Hush Little Baby ~ Harry Lewis Requested: Yes ~ Hello, idk if youâre doing requests rn but your writing is honestly amazing!! Could you do a Harry imagine where he and reader have been together forever and reader gets accidentally pregnant and itâs just baso the journey if ygm? Like telling him, his friends family fans and then baby being born kinda like a time line typa thing ? If not dw I love you so much !!!! And ~ Please could you write a Harry imagine where he has a daughter Tags: Fluff Word Count: 1.5k
It had been a full hour. A full hour of babysitting Rex Minter, Simon and Taliaâs first-born child. They had wanted a date night and it was Harryâs turn to look after the little one. Yet, the whole time you had felt a sickness in the pits of your stomach, you were absolutely sure it would fade when you had eaten something. Here you were, a full large domino's pizza down, and the sickness had not faded. Going against your better judgement, you left Harry with the toddler and made your way to the bathroom.
You were acutely aware of the fact that Simon and Talia were planning on having another little one, so you knew that they would be well stocked on at home pregnancy kits. You carefully took one out of the glass bathroom cabinet, and walked over to the toilet. Deep down, you were hoping that you were wrong. That you were not pregnant. You knew for a fact that you were not ready for a baby and if you were completely honest, you knew that Harry wasnât either. He was a brilliant uncle and loved having the boysâ children around, babysitting for them so they could have date nights, but he was always able to give them back at the end of a long night. You werenât so sure how he would feel about not being able to do that. Not having the freedom to do what he wanted anymore, because he had to put this tiny life first. It just didnât seem like the Harry you knew and loved.
The alarm of your phone pulled you out of the deep thought that you had found yourself in. In no world did you think that having a quiet night in babysitting for some friends would lead you into something so life changing. You carefully picked up the little stick from in front of you, taking a deep inhale of breath. Two lines. Positive. Fuck. As you cleared away the rubbish of the box, you slipped the pregnancy test into your pocket.
As you made your way back to Harry and Rex, all you could hear were joyous screams. Harry really was the fun uncle he had promised to be in a Sidemen Reacts video, many moons ago.
âY/N!â Rex beamed as he ran up to you. âUncle Harry was saying that I could have a chocolate for pudding. Usually mummy and daddy say no, and I have to have yogurt or a piece of fruit.â
âOh thatâs great buddy!â You reply, trying to force enthusiasm through the nerves and worry. Although you had no confidence in the fact that you were very successful in that. Harry sent you a glance that confirmed your thoughts. He hadnât bought it for a second.
As you took Rexâs tiny hand in yours, and made your way to the kitchen, you slipped the pregnancy test to Harry, hoping beyond hope that his reaction was a good one. âWe need to talk laterâ he mouthed, increasing your anxiety tenfold.
-
The âtalkâ Harry had referenced that night, didnât amount to the negative that you had convinced yourself it would. You had agreed to keep the baby. Surprisingly, Harry was all for keeping the little one. He hadnât expressed to you how much he had wanted a child, because he didnât want to pressure you into anything. The fact that it had happened was such an unexpected surprise. A good surprise though!
You had been to a few scans together, watching your belly swell and get bigger as the months progressed. When it came to finding out the gender though, you chose not to find out. So, you had taken to calling the baby âPeanutâ. Telling the other boys was an experience to say the very least. These were the men that had watched Harry grow up, from a reserved teenager to the extroverted man he had become. You had both agreed on telling them all at the same time.
The plan had been to get the children that had already been born into mini Sidemen FC t-shirts, starting with the oldest and ending with the youngest, your bump. Which would be painted black, with the number five as your little one would be the fifth addition to the Sidemen extended family. As it stood, the line was as follows: Ethanâs twins Oscar and Olivia who he shared with his wife Kayleigh, JJâs son Morphius who he shared with his fiance Bella and little Rex. Nervously you went and stood next to Rex. Thankfully, with baggy clothes you had managed to hide the fact that you were pregnant. You took a hold of Rexâs hand, more for your own comfort than anything else. As if the reactions of your friends were wrapped up in the little hand of a toddler.
Slowly, you lifted your jumper up to reveal the paint that was on your stomach. Showing the number five that was painted on top of it. Suddenly, there was an eruption of cheers. The girls became overly emotional, which was expected. They had just found out that one of their best friends was carrying a new member of their extended family. The boys crowded around Harry, patting him on the shoulder and taking him in for hugs. The love being experienced in the room was tangible and you just knew that no matter what happened, your child would be growing up in such a loving environment.
Telling each of your respective families had been a totally different kettle of fish, however. This is where most of the nerves were mounting from for you. Your parents had become parents at a very young age, and had made a lot of mistakes, you were terrified of having history repeated. Having a baby in your early 20s, wasnât the plan. You felt like you needed to learn more about yourself first, and one of your deepest fears was to have this confirmed by your own parents. Instead, the reaction that you received was nothing but positive. Your dad had warned Harry that he couldnât drink as much beer, whilst your mum had warned you about the severe lack of sleep you were about to get. Overall though, they were beyond excited to have their family expanding. Harryâs parents had cried when you revealed the news to them. His sister, Rosie had got Peanut a little stuffed giraffe which she aptly named Gina.
-
Setting up the nursery was probably the most enjoyable part of the ordeal. Partly because you loved unleashing your creative side; and partly because decorating the nursery came at the latest point of your pregnancy. You had opted for a pale yellow paint for three of the walls, opting for a feature wall which was decorated in a safari print wallpaper.
You were helping Harry with the final touches of the room, you placed Gina giraffe in the corner of the cot, next to the pillow so that your baby always had comfort. Thinking about it, you were sure that you had a ragdoll from when you were a baby at your parents house. Itâs funny how itâs the little things that you remember in the biggest moments.
As you turned around to admire your handy work, you felt an immense pressure, causing you to grip onto the cot and double over. You had never experienced anything like this before and you were pretty sure you knew what it was. Your baby was arriving and it was arriving fast.
âHarry,â You screamed, trying your best to stay calm as you knew this was a pivotal moment for the both of you. He was definitely as nervous as you, as he didnât understand the mood changes, or the pain that you felt. Despite having attended every pregnancy class and read upteen pregnancy books. He had put a lot of opportunities that had presented themself to him on hold for the sake of you and your child as he wanted to be as supportive as possible. Which a meer nine months ago, you would have never imagined Harry doing.
You heard pounding up the stairs, Harryâs usual cheery disposition changing as soon as he saw the immense panic that had taken over your face. âIâll grab the pregnancy bag, make your way to the car, it's already unlocked.â He informed me, as he grabbed the pregnancy bag from the other side of the room, helping me down the stairs as it had become near impossible to do the simplest of tasks, now that I was carrying our baby.
---
Labour was without a doubt the most painful thing you had ever experienced. It was a quick birth, having arrived at the hospital at seven, and giving birth to your daughter at exactly fifteen minutes past seven. Harry had fallen asleep in the chair in the corner of your room.
Your daughter, however, was screaming blue murder. Despite this, Harry still wouldnât wake. So, with all your might, you scooped your little one into your arms. âHush little baby, donât you cry. We swear that weâll never leave your side and if we do, remember this love like ours never dies.â You whisper, rocking her into a soft slumber as you placed a soft kiss to the top of her head. Your little family was already complete.
Since youâre answering asks about the showâhow do you think theyâre going to handle Bridgerton house in season 2 and going forward? When Anthony and Kate move in and the rest of them move to number 5, most of the Bridgerton kids still live with Violet (idk where Colin and Benedict live in the showâŠ?) And since Bridgerton house was one of the main sets in season one, it would be jarring to suddenly have the main characters of future seasons be living in a house other than Bridgerton house.
SoâŠdo Anthony and Kate move in with the rest of the family? Do they allow Violet to stay there until the kids grow up? (side note the scenes between Violet and Kate about passing down the title of viscountess is gonna make me so emo) Will they decide to break my heart and have kathony live off screen at Aubrey hall during all future seasons so itâs not a problem? Am I thinking about this way too much? đ€Ł
Hi Anon! Hope youâre having a good day! That's such a good question and something I've thought a lot about.
Bridgerton House is definitely the most important set and the main place where they all have dinner and congregate and later this will be No.5 from S3. I think theyâre going to increase the amount of scenes all the Bridgertons have together as those scenes are so popular from S1 and the show is about the Bridgertons after all! Plus Ben and Colin will be focused on big time this season to build up for their seasons. Bridgerton is such an expensive show theyâll want to use the same sets as much as possible and theyâre already expanding a lot for S2 with Aubrey Hall, the Sharmas and probably a few more sets. A lot of Anthonyâs scenes take place in his fatherâs office in the books and S1 and they definitely will in S2, so Bridgerton House is very important. I reckon weâll see Kate, Edwina and Mary in Bridgerton House for tea or dinner with all the Bridgertons at some point as well pre and post engagement. Bridgerton House is where weâll mainly see all the unmarried Bridgertons together, especially Hyacinth, Greg, Eloise and Francesca as thatâs where we saw them most in S1 (excluding parties and balls) and thereâs not a whole lot going on for them unless the smaller ones get more of a plot but I doubt that. Weâll definitely see more of Eloise everywhere like we did in S1 anyway as her plot will be her debut to society!Â
Iâm kind of curious if theyâll show any of Eloiseâs suitors and possibly one she actually likes? As she does get a few proposals over the years in her book but she has 0 interest in any of them. I reckon weâll see her just being the worst, funniest debutant in the history of London haha.
I think theyâll definitely do the move to No.5 but not properly until S3. It definitely will be jarring but Iâm thinking theyâll make it a plot line for sure to show the transition and sort of the emotional impact of it, leaving behind Edmund and their family home. I could see Kate and Anthony moving into Bridgerton House in the last episode in the final scene of S2 like a year later with Kate recovered from her leg injury and pregnant, to set the scene for S3 as most of that will take place in No.5 with Sophie and the Bridgertons. No.5 is important for S3. I also think we'll see Violet and the Bridgertons having a moment together before they leave their childhood home either at the end of S2 or at the beginning of S3, as that's going to be emotional for them, particularly Violet as sheâs leaving the place she lived with Edmund behind. Â
 TVWLM ends in 1814 and AOFAG begins in 1815, which is when Edmund II is born. Iâm thinking Kate and Anthony's role in the first 2 episodes could be Kate's struggles to adapting to motherhood or as Viscountess now they're living in Bridgerton House or something like that. Anthony struggles too possibly? Moving in with the family is actually a really good idea as that would definitely result in some humour as they all could get very sick of each other? Or it would just make it easier for the writers and the show to have everyone together. They could move in with the Bridgertons first and then they could leave just before the time skip in AOFAG. I really donât see them all living together as thatâs not how the books do it but who knows! I just really hope Anthony and Kate have a good sub-plot in S3. I'm thinking the first episode of S3 will be mainly about Sophie's childhood and life (or they could do it in flashbacks but for Sophie it would make more sense to just tell her story at once to understand why she runs away) and it will end with the ball scene, so Edmundâs birth fits in perfectly around then before the 2 year time skip. The ball scene could even be episode 2!Â
This also will be the year Francesca enters society and marries John so John courting Franny & their engagement will definitely be a sub-plot in S3, maybe only for an episode or two or we might only get an introduction and then we see them married. This will happen before the time skip which I canât see them avoiding as it just throws the entire time line off. Anthony will be relatively involved in that plot as well and so will Violet.Â
Daphne's role in S2 intrigues me as she won't have Simon so to see where she fits in and if she has a plot herself will indicate what's in store for Anthony, Ben etc when they're married after their seasons and if their spouses stay on. Although, they will have a bigger role than Daphne regardless as the brothers always have scenes together and are relatively involved in their brotherâs love lives. I can see Phoebe leaving after S2 but I would like if they focused on motherhood for Daphne in S2 and possibly helping Anthony out with courting and his love life if she does end up going. It would be sad but hopefully she stays! She might not really be in S2 we wonât know for ages anyway!Â
The show is so expensive that I think theyâll minimize the amount of sets they have to set up or locations they shoot on and for S2, Iâd be surprised if Ben and Colin arenât nearly always in Bridgerton House. Benedict and Colin seem to be living in Bridgerton House in the show from what we've seen so far, they're always at the house and they return from balls to Bridgerton House. Anthony is the only one who doesn't live there but we never see his bachelor lodgings and I don't think we will until their wedding night, unless we seem some scenes of him brooding on his own and pining over Kate haha. I can see Anthony gifting Benedict My Cottage at some point in S2 to set him up for season 3 and to help him escape London, but in his book Ben has his own bachelor lodgings which I donât think weâll see until S3. I don't think we'll see Colin's bachelor lodgings until S4 as that's when he gets a place in RMB after returning from his travels. I think they'll want to keep Colin in the show as much as possible so any time skips that's when he'll be traveling like when they ended S1 with him going off to travel and then flash forward to a year and Daphne and Simon have their baby. So when heâs in London, heâll always be at Bridgerton House or No.5.
Going by the first season, I presume there's going to be 8 episodes in season 2. I think Kate and Anthony will be married by episode 5 like Simon and Daphne were. That leaves 3 episodes of Anthony's 'I won't love my wife idiot' stage. I would love for us to get a full episode of their honeymoon in Aubrey Hall but I don't think we will considering the book didn't have it and we're going to get at least 2 episodes in Aubrey Hall anyway. I do think one of the post-marriage episodes will be focused on Kate adjusting to the role of Viscountess and her bonding and having some very sweet moments with Violet and the Bridgertons. I hope they'll focus on her insecurities and her struggles with how Anthony is behaving and just how society has been treating her. Especially when Anthony ran off to Aubrey Hall after their engagement and left Kate all alone to deal with the whispers? I hope they address that and he gets some slack for it. I think thereâs going to be a good few scenes in S2 at the Sharma residence as well and a few balls, definitely one at Lady Danburys, so weâre in for an amazing season!Â
Who knows what will happen but I could see them using very similar sets for Bridgerton House & No.5 in future seasons so it wouldnât be a big change. No. 5 will still be a big household if it has the 4 youngest and Violet and occasioanlly Colin and Ben. Iâm still not so sure about Eloiseâs book and on, I think the strongest and most popular books plot wise are Anthonys, Benedicts and Colins and everyone is hyped for them. Daphneâs did extremely well though with a weaker book (that was still good just not a favourite of mine) so I have high hopes for them to do all the Bridgertonâs books. What I think they could do is possibly combine Eloise and Francescas for S5? As theyâre both taking place at the same time in 1824. Gregoryâs book was okay but it could be a good adaption as thereâs so much going on. Who knows! Theyâve already included Marina and Philip so that seems like an indication they would love to do them all and plan to?
I really went on here (again, do I ever stop talking). I donât know what anyone else thinks but Iâd love to hear! I could talk about Bridgerton forever tbh and I really do need to get back to the many invoices waiting for me <3 hope youâre having a good day anon!
Whatâs a good comic that doesnât involve superheroes?
oh buddy. pal. friendo. Iâll limit myself to books currently running to keep this only a single mile long. Note that depending on how loose your definition of âsuperheroâ is will affect this. Iâve seen people call John McClane a superhero so yeah.
Something is Killing the Children
by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell'Edera (Boom! Studios)
Kids have been going missing in a sleepy woodland town. A strange woman named Erica arrives, determined to do something about it. She partners with a young boy who claims to have seen the thing stalking the town, and things quickly spiral further out of control. Well-written characters and fantastic art. Easily my favorite book running right now.
The Department of Truth
by James Tynion IV and Martin Simmonds (Image)
Cole Turner is an FBI agent who specializes in conspiracy theories and the deleterious effect it has on the minds of people obsessed with them. Unfortunately for him, he is about to discover that there is more going on under the surface than he realized and belief is far more powerful than he could ever imagine. Tynion is quickly becoming one of my favorite writers, and Simmondsâs art is even better here than it was in Dying Is Easy (which I also recommend). This series has one of the best first issues Iâve ever read, and I was hooked instantly. A definite recommend if you are as interested in conspiracy theories as I am.
Fire Power
by Robert Kirkman and Chris Samnee (Image)
Owen Johnson is a regular dad in the suburbs. He has a great wife, two kids and a job working at his father-in-lawâs antique shop. What sets him apart is that he had spent years of his early life in a Shaolin temple, mastering martial arts, including the legendary Fire Power, the ability to generate fire from his body. He has long since turned his back on his order and the responsibilities they demand, but his former life is not ready to let him go. Written by Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead and with art by the great Chris Samnee, Fire Power is a great martial arts comic, recommended for fans of Street Fighter or anyone who likes seeing monks and ninjas beat each other up. I definitely recommend starting from the âVolume 0âł prequel trade. Itâs not ESSENTIAL but I believe the story flows much better with it that way.
Fear Case
by Matt Kindt and Tyler Jenkins (Dark Horse)
Two Secret Service agents are investigating the Fear Case, the Serviceâs oldest open case. All agents are put on the case, but are only given a single year to investigate, as the case has the tendency to ruin the lives of those who get too close. Winters and Mitchum are in the last three weeks before they have to turn the case over, but they are closer than anyone has gotten in the history of the Service to getting their hands on the legendary box. But the closer they get, the more bodies they seem to find, and the duoâs mental and emotional limits are stretched to their breaking point. Everything Matt Kindt writes is worth reading, and this series is no different. Recommended for fans of the X-Files and other supernatural mysteries.
I Breathed a Body
by Zac Thompson and Andy MacDonald (Aftershock)
Telling too much about this comic would honestly be spoiling it. In the not-too-distant future, the biggest social media influencer in the world posts something horrific and the macabre lengths his PR team go to to handle it. The art is extremely good at showing the body horror involved and while I do recommend the comic, be warned, it is *extremely* fucked up. Excellent horror comic.
Once and Future
by Kieron Gillen and Dan Mora (Boom! Studios)
Terrorists resurrect King Arthur in a bid for power, but it turns out that the english legend is not what they thought or bargained for. Now, a retired monster hunter and her archeologist grandson must turn back the tide of returning myths before the world is irreversibly plunged into darkness. But their family history has plenty of shadows of their own. Really great book from two of my favorite creators, and really love the way they play with the metatextual nature of the myths and legends involved. Very fun.
Seven Secrets
by Tom Taylor and Daniele Di Nicuolo (Boom! Studios)
A clandestine order protects seven briefcases which hold seven secrets. However, a betrayal from within threatens to reveal those secrets, and Caspar, the son of two former protectors of the Seven Secrets, must discover the truth before all is lost. Tom Taylor is a fantastic writer that makes everything he writes infectiously fun, and with Di Nicuoloâs great eye for action scenes, this is an adventure book worth checking out.
Stillwater
by Chip Zdarsky and RamĂłn K. PĂ©rez (Image)
A promise of a substantial inheritance brings Daniel West and his friend to the quiet town of Stillwater. However, they quickly realize the townâs sinister secret: in Stillwater, nobody dies. And as the marketing for the book says, thatâs not just a promise, itâs a threat. Good writing and an intriguing mystery. Highly recommended.
That Texas Blood
by Chris Condon and Jacob Phillips (Image)
The murder of his brother brings an aspiring writer back to the Texas town of his youth, and puts him on a violent road to his own undoing. Fantastic writing. If youâre like me and love dark neo-western and crime stories, then I honestly canât recommend this book enough. Look elsewhere if you want happy endings.
We Only Find Them When Theyâre Dead
by Al Ewing and Simone Di Meo (Boom! Studios)
Captain Malik and his crew pilot an autopsy ship, so named because they harvest meat, metal and other materials from the fresh corpses of dead gods that appear on the edge of space. Malik wants to see a living god, and is willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen. But the ghosts of his past haunt him, and until he confronts them, making history wonât be easy. Fantastic cosmic sci-fi story with gorgeous art by Di Meo. Recommended for people who love stories set in space, and also for people who love long panels.
American Ronin
by Peter Milligan and ACO (AWA Upshot)
In a future where supercorporations rule everyoneâs lives (I know that may be hard to visualize but try to imagine it), war is fought not by nations, but by enhanced operatives carrying out all manner of assassinations and espionage. But when one unnamed operative breaks his programming and goes on the hunt, the entire sick system is about to be violently brought down. Really interesting protagonist who has a great ability. Hunt down his targets by ingesting their DNA to learn how they think, and then using that empathic ability to get inside their heads. The cat and mouse games are really fun, and I highly recommend for anyone who likes superspy stories or seeing complex plans pay off.
Casual Fling
by Jason Starr and Dalibor TalajiÄ (AWA Upshot)
Jennifer Ryan is a successful lawyer with a loving family and a great career, but a bad decision (that is, cheating on her stay-at-home husband) made on a whim has disastrous consequences. Saying much more would be spoiling, but there is definitely something sinister going on beneath the surface. Made in the style of erotic thrillers like Fatal Attraction and Eyes Wide Shut, this book features very well-written, realistic characters and importantly (to me anyway) refuses to condemn the protagonist while not shying away from the destructive results of her mistakes. I picked this book up because I liked Jason Starrâs previous book, Red Border, and enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. Recommended.
Bitter Root
by David F. Walker, Chuck Brown and Sanford Greene (Image)
In 1920s Harlem, a long-standing family of monster hunters is splintering. Tragedy and conflicting worldviews are tearing them apart, and theyâre going to need to stand together if they want to save New York City from the darkness thatâs coming. Hate is a powerful thing, but also a cancer, and itâs about to metastasize. Really great worldbuilding and immediately likeable characters. Despite having a lot of themes about hate and prejudice (and utilizing them particularly well, in my opinion), the book is an exceptional action story. David F. Walker is a favorite writer of mine (See: Shaft, Nighthawk, Luke Cage) and Chuck Brown wrote the incredibly fun On the Stump (also highly recommended). The issues also feature essays from black scholars who expand on some of the historical events and themes that are present in the book, if youâre into that sort of thing (which I am). Iâm not sure if those are in the trades, though.
Carry On Countdown - Day 22
Wow, watch me use the @carryon-countdown to plug my skating fic lmao
I donât know if this counts, since Angelina is an OC and actually, Baz would totally make friends with/practically adopt a 17yo Russian girl, so I donât know how unlikely it is, but itâs here. And also, I just really want to share more of On thin ice content, but the fic itself isnât ready to be published yet so have this instead.Â
For context, Baz used to train in Russia aged 16-20, and now both him and Simon train in Montreal (no, idk why I chose Montreal out of all places but thatâs how it is.) Also I think Gelya is the Russian diminutive/nickname used for the name Angelina, but Iâm not sure. The fic is still in the works, so this scene is bound to change/expand (I did omit it a bit when writing because spoilers) but anyway, Iâll stop rambling now.Â
Prompt: Unlikely friends Word count: 1950 Rating: This scene is G, although the whole fic will be T or MÂ
SIMON
The ride from the airport to the hotel is awful. Baz mustâve suspected this, because he made me sit in the front.
âGo on,â he said teasingly. âThe only skater who has motion sickness.â
I have to say, sitting in the front almost didnât make a difference. I may not know how to drive, but even I know youâre not supposed to drive like that. When the cab drops us off in front of the hotel, I donât even bother hiding my relief. Baz laughs.
âI never want to experience this again,â I say, knowing full well that this is my life for the next week. The hotel might be close to the venue, but itâs still far enough for it to be a driving distance. I can only hope buses are less deadly than cabs.
âYou know, Moscow traffic is actually tame compared to the rest of Russia,â Baz smirks, handing me my bags.
âWell then I never want to see the rest of Russia,â I mutter, slinging my duffel bag over my shoulder and stepping through the automated hotel doors. Baz scoffs and follows me.
This hotel is fancy â much fancier than the hotels we usually stay at. Baz doesnât seem phased by it at all, the posh bastard. I bet the hotels he stays at when heâs on vacation are at least twice as posh.
He does, however, seem phased when someone yells âBasil!â across the lobby. Before either of us can register whatâs going on, a small figure in a red jacket runs towards us at full speed and crashes into Baz, making him emit a surprised oof sound.
The moment I realize the figure is actually Angelina Nuriyeva is the moment she starts speaking in fast Russian. I donât understand a thing, but Baz seems to, because he laughs and hugs her back.
I knew Baz and Angelina were friends, but I didnât think they were this close. I mean, theyâre the exact polar opposites; Angelina is an actual sunshine (sheâs always hugging and smiling at everyone) and Baz is⊠Baz. (Heâs a big softie, I know that, but he goes through great efforts to appear cold and closed off.)
But here he is, ruffling Angelinaâs hair and telling her something in Russian. (Iâm suddenly met with the realisation that being in Moscow means Iâll get to hear a lot more of Bazâs Russian. I am very much not complaining at this prospect, even if I donât understand a thing of what theyâre saying.)
Angelina is nodding along and she pulls out her phone to show him something, but thatâs when Baz stops her, suddenly speaking in English.
âWait, I think in the interest of Snow, we should switch to English. He already looks lost enough as it is,â he says.
âNo, no, Iâm fine, by all meansâŠâ I start, but Iâm soon cut off by Angelina.
âYes, of course! Iâm sorry, Simon! Come here, itâs so good to see you,â she says and hugs me. (This is what I mean when I say Angelina is a sunshine.)
âGood to see you too,â I nod.
âI was just about to show Basil how his houseplants are doing. Do you want to see too?â she asks.
âHouseplants?â I donât bother hiding the surprise in my voice. Since when does Baz like houseplants? His flat in Montreal doesnât have any, spare the tiny cactus on the windowsill.
âI had a lot of houseplants when I still lived here, but I couldnât take them with me on the plane when I moved, so Gelya took them in her care,â he explains, as if heâs reading my mind.
âGeorgy is doing amazing but Ilya went a bit floppy. I changed his earth so now Iâm hoping he gets better,â Angelina says, showing Baz a picture of two houseplants, side by side, one of them (Ilya?) looking slightly wilted.
âWhen it goes floppy, we say it wilts, and we donât say earth, we say soil,â Baz corrects her. If I was Angelina, Iâd probably be annoyed right now, but she just smiles at him.
âThank you. Itâs so much harder to learn English now that thereâs no one here to practice with me,â she sighs.
âYou know you can call me any time and we can practice,â Baz offers.
âWait, wait, wait,â I stop them both. There is so much new information I have to process. âYou had houseplants? And you named them Russian names? And you taught her English?â (That would actually explain why Angelinaâs English is so good.)
âYes, Snow, are you keeping up?â
âAnd when he gave them up, he wrote me a whole notebook on how to take care of them,â Angelina chimes in. âAnd another notebook with English grammar.â
Maybe I do have trouble keeping up. Who is this Baz? (And why is he so attractive?)
âI never thought of you as a houseplant kind of bloke,â I shrug. âYou donât have any houseplants in Montreal.â
âIâm still mourning the loss of my old children.â Baz deadpans before turning back to Angelina. âShow me Alyosha. He was always my favourite.â
BAZ
Unsurprisingly, the jet-lag catches up with me right when itâs time to go to bed. I donât know why I was naĂŻve enough to believe I wonât need melatonin when dealing with an eight-hour time difference. I better take it now, before itâs too late.
I sigh and throw the covers back before picking up my phone to check the time. However, a text message notification from Snow grabs my attention before I can do that.
Is he nervous again? It would make sense, since this is a big competition for him. Would I be able to sneak into his room and sneak out the next morning unnoticed? I doubt that. There are only athletes staying on our floor, the coaches, press and competition staff are all on different floors, and I doubt the athletes would pay us much attention, but itâs still risky.
Iâd much rather risk a few weird looks than have Simon spiral into panic two days before a major competition, though. I decide Iâll go to his room if thatâs what he needs.
Maybe I should check why heâs even texting me before I devise any plans.
SS: do u have melatonine? SS: jet lag
I sigh in relief. Heâs not having a mental breakdown. Heâs just jet-lagged. (Which is a bit strange for Snow, but I suppose even his circadian rhythm can take a blow from time to time.)
BP: Itâs spelled melatonin and yes, I have it. You can come get it if you still need it BP: Room 254
SS: yes ik where u r SS: Iâll b right over
I sit on the edge of the bed and wait for Snow to knock on my door. Heâs staying a few corridors down, in room 273, so it takes him a few minutes. I jump up when I hear his knock.
Heâs standing in front of my door, wearing joggers, a hoodie and those damned glasses of his again. His hair is messed up, like heâs been tossing and turning too.
âI thought you didnât get jet-lagged,â I say, stepping aside to let him in. He settles on the edge my bed while I rummage my luggage for melatonin supplements.
âI donât get sleep jet-lagged, but I do get food jet-lagged,â he says.
âWhat does that even mean, Snow?â
âIt means itâs lunchtime in Canada right now and Iâm so hungry I canât sleep.â
I bite back a laugh. Heâs an idiot. (An adorable one but an idiot nonetheless.) âYou donât need melatonin, Snow, you need this,â I say, throwing a granola bar at him. He startles, but manages to catch it.
âYouâre just giving this to me?â he asks, audibly surprised. (Which is ridiculous. He gives me food all the time and here he is, questioning my generosity over a fucking granola bar.)
âNo, Snow, pay up. Fifty rubbles.â
âI donât have any Russian money,â he laughs, tearing the wrapping open. Heâs going to get crumbs all over my bed, but I donât shoo him away. Instead, I finally find the melatonin supplements and take one with some water. âDo you still want one?â I ask.
âDo you have any more granola bars?â
I laugh and pass him another one before sitting down next to him on the bed.
âAre you nervous?â I ask, just to make sure heâs really okay.
âRight now? Iâm just hungry,â he says, tearing open the second granola bar.
âRight,â I nod.
âBaz. Are you doing that thing where youâre worrying about me again?â
âA bit,â I admit.
âStop,â he says like I can just turn it off like a tap. (I wish I could.) We sit in silence for a while, me thinking about how much easier my life would be if I just stopped worrying about Simon Snow and him chewing through his granola bar. âI didnât know you and Angelina were such good friends,â he finally says.
âWe trained together for four years,â I shrug, but itâs not just that. The training environment in Russia was intense. Itâs a bloodbath to even get on the national team there, so of course itâs intense, but I think every other skater the rink was looking at me sideways because I was an outlier. I wasnât Russian, I didnât speak Russian and I think they felt like I didnât belong there. (I know now that I really didnât.) They eventually accepted me and by the time I left Russia, even the ones who refused to speak during my first year there were sad to see me go.
But Gelya was nice to me from the start. She was only thirteen at the time and didnât speak any English, but she clapped for me when I did something well and cheered me on when I was having a bad day. (Thanks to her, davai was one of the first Russian words I learned.) She brought me homemade pyraniki on special occasions and when I got injured and had to go back to England to have surgery, she sent me get well soon cards all the way from Russia and she made the entire rink sign them.
Thatâs just who she is. Sheâs this nice to everyone and it didnât matter to her if I was Russian or English, I was just another person at her rink who she could bring biscuits to. Over the four years that Iâve lived there, she became like a little sister to me.
âBaz?â Snowâs voice snaps me from my thoughts. âYou seem tired. Iâm going to go.â
I have half a mind not to ask him to stay here. (We both know we canât do that.) âOkay,â I say instead. He stands up and throws the granola wrappers in the bin. I stand up too, to walk him to the door (I have manners), but he waves at me to sit back down.
âItâs fine,â he says.
âWill you be able to sleep?â
âIf my hunger doesnât get to me again, yes,â he laughs. Heâs already by the door.
âWait.â I stand up and grab the last granola bar from my bag, offering it to him. âJust in case,â I explain. I want him to stay here, to make sure he sleeps well and doesnât spend the night worrying about the competition, but I canât do that, so this is the least I can do.
âThanks,â he smiles, tucking it in his pocket. Then he hugs me briefly and presses a kiss to my cheek. âSleep well.â
âYou too.â
And heâs out the door.
of evil so a big fight ensues in the war which is really more of a battle between shielding humans he follows his nonskilled anklesand loses his arm also those chargingand human crystalsand up in the oceanand spend the pillsand also to stuff so now in human start popping up moreand more around the world also Mays ex husband Garner egrets in humidified enter into this horrible monster called flash also grant one was to try to start by Dragon even though the avengers just fishing that Daisy also says about her dad who wasnât such a bad guy after all he gets his memory erasedand start a new life may decides to take a break from shieldand Fitzsimmons finally start dating however risingand going Simmons is in the same room as the monolith which shield has occasional memory thatâs the portal through which you go to this terrible ugly planet with an original inhuman monster hive lives she was the inspiration for Hydra away quick positive video here I really hope it doesnât feel like Iâm talking down you guys by saying in case your memberand thatâs her stuff a lot I genuinely does make this as easy to followand not confusing as possible is especially for people who are defense of the stuff that havenât washed all this already of this information is slightly hard to keep track of you a second thatand gets into that placeand he said last night was abandoned there a long time ago they become friendsand survive together after many years of service Frank S returns home to his family from his militaryand shady servers daysand itâs super niceand emotional however around this timeand Cerberus leaks with Cerberus was actually about including the video that it is a guiding shot to this guy called David whose nickname micro will be back in a sec agent orange transfer for doing this because heâs not a big fan of Frankâsand so with the help of the Cerberus squad including Frank supposed best friend Billy Russo he sets up a three way gunfight between three gangs in a park to kill Frankand his family Frankâs wifeand children are brutally murderedand Frankish on the head but survives after this Frank is enragedand devastated answer decides take matters into his own hands he uses his military trainingand pure anger to hunt downand kill everyone in the gangs involved with his familyâs death he does this under the vigilante guys of the punisher first just make a plan though so that takes a little time now micro is a hackerand NSA analyst these to help a Daisy when she was working as a hackerâs analysis info that Cerberus doing legal stuffand he starts leaking it so agent orange triesand killed his men shoot microand think they killand really the bullet his phoneand so survived because phones are bulletproof in this world Michael doesnât hidingand pretends to be dead even from his wifeand kids who he watches from security cameras Scott Lange has finally finished serving his time in prison for his crime that really was not badand is released going to stay with his old cellmateand pal Luis he wants to see his daughter but his life is moved on to another guyand so thatâs difficult in its with Luis his new friends Kurtand Daveand try to get a job at Baskin Robbins but Baskin Robbins always finds out tech is having run by Darren cross hang pencil protĂ©gĂ© along with Hankâs daughter hope while Hank is on the world they some old tales of Hankâsand process about his own version of the suit called the yellowjacket only this one is way deadlierand fliesand shoots lasers cross also plans to sell this tech to Hydraand the 10 ringsand just the worst people thanks not too happy about thisand try to think of a plan to stopand even where Scott Lange ever since the very public Vista quick job I think Scott could be a good choice to take on the object stuff before gets into the wrong hands through a series of people think itâs got a tip about as mentioned Rob Casillas to see how good Scott really is what Scott eventually does only to find the entrance to he takes it tries it onand is terrified by the experience Hank is impressed with the skill cc but when Scott tries to return the suit heâs caught by the policeand cost breakdown in jailand tells of his pregnant with cross help is not awfully happy with how things are developing as she was to wear the MS student takedown cross but Hank does a letter because of how her mother died all those years ago so they trained Scott until he becomes great at the shrink tricky stuff even to friendsand called Anthony very good Scott also starts to get romantically involved with hopeand Hank reveals to help our mom diedand she is all well I totally understandand forgive you know dad even though you really could is only sooner Iâm an adult you know theyâre good now Scott needs advice from an old avenger space to steal the yellowjacket suit is there only to discover that itâs been renovatedand itâs now the new venture space is not by falcon who fights in man is defeated but also impressed by Scottâs abilitiesand less just called Scottâs good fortune that it wasnât patient who was on patrol that day also by the way crosses going crazy because pen particles mess with the brain after all this Scott goes in to steal the yellowjacket suit but gets caught so him across FIFO while in a helicopterand then a briefcaseand in Scottâs daughterâs room to save his daughterand kill cross Scott go subatomicand saves the day but is temporarily trapped in the quantum realm where Hankâs wife Janet was left however he manages to get outand itâs all good after all this Hank believes that hope is finally ready to become a heroand so gives her the lost barber Scott is back his familyand his daughter Annaâs dosing hopeand never once happy now go back to the moon real quick a place we havenât been for a while where the go inhumanand potentially the most unlikable character in this entire universeand human arguing about this American flag I am only mentioning this to see him forget that thereâs an entire inhuman civilization just living on the moon while all this is happening back on earth the tomb salvaging company shows up in the area were scurvyâs to beand picks up small font Exceland some of this ends up in the hands of Hydra uses it to build a giant robot called ultimo but the manager show up at least those are leftand defeated now were getting into the Netflix world for a while first off Jessica Jones gets new job from Joy Meacham the sister of one Meacham was running red Enterprises will be manipulate it byâs dad was being controlled by the hand I give it a second to sink in again anyway she is Jessica to investigate the people around so she can blackmail them later if need be also Wilson Fisk is stilland by his he I mean jail because he such a big crime boss he start making connections there that Frank Castle has finally gotten all the resources he needs to kill the gangs he thinks were solely responsible for his familyâs murder so starts going around doing that in the most brutal way possible starting with the Irish Mafiaand a gang called the dogs of hell is all happening in or near Hells kitchenand that Murdoch starts noticing the stuff so he starts investigating eventually as daredevil in a newand improved suit by the way he comes face to face of the punisher which ends with a bullet to the face that is seriously injured but survives fighting keep fighting that the vigilante stuff while Cassidy is going around the city killing pedophiles in such an entry castle manages to kidnap daredevil Jenny into a chimney where they learn about each otherâs pastsand ideologies Castle takes a gun to daredevilâs hand pulse of the criminaland hasnât had to shoot the criminal or heâs can do it because castle things killing your enemies is the way to go hello I thought a lot of the people daredevil Scott daredevil to try to kill anyway daredevil breaks outand has to fight through some angry bikers Castle unleashes on them later on Frank itâs kidnap by the Irish who brutally tortured him but eventually he gets out with their troubles help explain the situationand himand daredevil cool now but that is arrested that the craziness is now over but nope just now Electra shows up his old girlfriend then ninjaand potentially secret weapon for the handand sheâs like a letâs find together because I see her doing that nowand so they do if I think he was a mainly with franking space to Karen what happened to his familyand the bondand become best is so daredeviland Electra are going around fighting the accuserand ultimately come across this giant pit the hand is digging in order to get Dragon bonesand to become immortal that still going on their tax by handand just until state shows up to save the day meanwhile on the lower side of things the punisher trial happensand during that Frank saw like an Angus into jail where he meets Wilson Fisk Fisk is like Frank nothings working everything but my biggest rival this person helped kill your family soand Frank Sykes say no more so he takes a that guy that this double crossesand try seven killed by Frank is just too good for that so Fisk lets them goand Frank tells Fisk to kill him when if he sees them again Frank itâs a geland mean wild animals like snow but again then ninja he thought he go before was brought back by the hand also their little kids being drained of their blood also for resurrection purposes through similar shenanigans the punisher keeps going around killing guys involved with his familyâs murderand I will still have conflicting ideologiesand punish ends up killing an old Marine buddy of his Electra stick have a falling outand cystic trust tablets are killedand she didnât like that so she tries to kill him will saves the dayand sticks kidnapped by the hand so Matt goesand save steak but while heâs doing that nobody reveals that Electra is a black skyand should be leading the hand she almost does but ends up joining their double insteadand the five images together real lasted Iâm on right there after a hostage situationand Electra go up against like an infinite supply of hingesand Electra ends up sacrificing yourself for daredevil the punisher also shows up at the last minute to get daredeviland assist which is a pretty awesome moment not to lie no booze killed for real this time by stickand the good guys win except the hand takes Electraâs bodyand uses their Dragon magic to bring her back to life so she can work for them one of the five leaders of the hand the main one Alexandra comes to oversee her resurrection fog equatesand hours for Hogarth from Jessica Jones reveals heâs daredevil to Karenand the punisher goes off to kill everyone was involved with his familyâs murder micro also wants answers about the whole Cerberus thing as a goes into Frankâs houseand puts the disk there with the video on it Castleâs unit in Afghanistan tortureand killing that innocent guy which Frank findsand takes with them tiny little break from the granite stuff here a witch just straight up which shows up in Londonand steals a magical artifact called the dark scepter however long case aliasand more masters of the Mystic arts show upand stop her a reminder that thereâs magic in this world back to the streets now the gauge is now working at Pops barbershopand I know people disagree on what years these Netflix shows in particular take placeand they are confusing but based on the research I did this seems to check out anyway Luke also works of the barand one evening because he such a player he starts floating with detective Misty Knight the club Lucas working is also my cottonmouth now is a big shot crime bossâs cousin Mariah is a City Councilmanand is also pretty shady just more low key than enough strike is a hammer check from Justin Hammer for some good money but the operation goes wrong look secret half brother Willa striker is also involved here at the highest level is a big criminal now is now called diamondbackand is cottonmouthâs boss basicallyand so he sends in his body shades to make sure everything is running smoothly godmother still cool because these be friends back in the day but because the guy because the deal to go wrong is involved with pop one of cottonâs goons goes against disordersand shoots at the barbershop killing pop through this link in contrast to fightingand looks all like I really care for but not my radar so stop doing illegal stuffand calmness like know so we can start messing up his operation Luke also teams up with Claire Temple daredevil hotel buffet crimeand start a romance energy gets his hands on some bullets I can actually penetrate Lukeâs impenetrable scan forand use them thoughand up having an argumentand so she murders him with a mic standand because the new big crime boss with shades help diamondback decides to team up with their setting out a plan to run the crime will do Harlem well Mariah does all the boring political stuff diamondback also shoots a cage twice with those magic bulletsand reveals that heâs actually his brother Claire takes her to the doctor who originated the experiment on themand they send an asset or boiling water something painfuland basically heâs restored to full strength while diamondbackand Mariah are running like a spear campaign against the cage to turn the people filed against them they do this through politicsand super shock loves Lucas backand FaceTime back in the police eventually diamondback shows up in a terrible super suitand even the punch each other for a bit is the end against diamondback partly with helping New York Spiderman style despite all his heroicsand proving himself a good guide to the policeand the people Harlem Lucasand back to prison because been discovered as Carl Lucas back in the day with your call despite being innocent broke out of prisonand so still needs to service time however one of Lukeâs barbershop friends is a file that proves his innocence so heâs getting out soon also diamondback is taking them but I doctor who did this experienceand Luke so heâll probably have some modifications the next time we see them there is a little bummed out that Luke is in jailand that they canât get a cup of coffee for a while but she keeps itself occupied by starting martial arts training with help from Colleen way that martial artist to statically buy land but doesnât really know that the hand is evil a bunch of little stuff happens here now firstly that kid who Iron Man said a while back Peter Parker is bitten by a radioactive spider which gives in special abilities like superstrength the ability to climb the wallsand having a dead uncle because heâs a genius kid he also designs web shooters that shoot superstrong webs also because heâs a good kid he realizes if you help people using his new powers heâs responsible for one bad stuff happens so he designs a pajama looking costume takes a living Spidermanand starts fighting little crimes in Queens now over with the Masters of the Mystic arts page 1and Margot find a group called the Dragon Raiders just FYI also falcon is still pretty impressed by thatand I guys a while back I think she could be a valuable asset to the team so he finds a way to contact with them through Luis about potentially joining the avengers Scots like well I cannot stay with my daughter right now but if you really need me yes give me a call we had about the shield team in a while but theyâre still doing stuff around these husband Andrew turned into an inhuman call mile he did that is now a giant monster whose sole purpose really is to hunt other humans with humans popping up around the world now shields main mission objective is protecting in humansand training them is made harder because the government treats a group called the ATC you which is designed to track down superpowered people like humansand take them then basically theyâre designed to replace yield now that shield has had to go underground in the ATC you is this guy called Malik once again is a big secret Hydra guy said he thought we were done with Hydra you were sorely mistaken the reason this ATC you exists is so Hydra can get a hold of all these in humansand use them you guessed it to make a super soldier army is not getting that seriously 99 of Hydraâs plans so shield in the ATC are fighting for to try to get Simmons off at alien planet which eventually doesand what is still working on rebuilding Hydra I guess Marilyn Stuckerâs weightless cool son Werner to join him in a nutshell the main thing is shield us to start up a team of humans the inhuman hunting monster is out there going after them thing of lash is like a less strong or cool version of the book he changes in this monster at different times Olson is asking pretty close to one of the higher ups at the ATC you who isnât actually evil but then worksheets are in the throat cycles is like I just have to crush discussed just Hydra also wants to get to the matter because they want to bring Benjamin back because they think will be a big secret weapon for them so word fits in Colson end up on an alien planetand cousins like mandatory wordand he crushes Wardâs chest with his robot handand then goes back to think thatâs the end of Ward but then the superpowerful clinical human eye possesses corpseand then makes its way back to earth I was now leading Hydra through Wardâs bodyand heâs observing people for strengthand you know typical evil villain stuff so that any rent is still in and now going to basket CCI festand thatâs what the iron fist does ever he starts missing homeand gets bored because heâs kind of a spoiled brat so just ramp runs away when the pass is open his eyes to go back to New York to take packs company because thatâs I think it works because heâs also kind of a thundering dumbass doesnât work focuses old friends join Ward Meacham if it were just go with it think is a crazy homeless person understandably wards think that that Harold is still kind of running the company while being controlled by the hand which he started to get kinda sick of becomes friends with Colleen at the dojo he also meets Claire Temple bananas put in a mental hospital he breaks out there with the power of the iron fist stocking 30 with Colleenand Bruceâs friends that it actually is an is coming back with the help of Jerry Hogarth he kinda sucks a business though because heâs been living among city in another dimension for the past decade ends of meeting Harold whose IK we should work together can sometimes take a controlling me so you can go kill themand I like gathers the main purpose in life I had to hand them gal the hand is still selling heroinand Dennyâs unhappy about that science of beating herand agreeing to a series of challenges the loser has to pack upand get out of the city anyways but Manga breaks the promise but sheâs got ancient society superpowers so thereâs not much you can do about it Danny keeps consistently sucking a ringâs company so heâs married now by the board along with the Meachamâs words also super pissed at is that Harold is he took all of his money so he tells Harold bio comes back thanks to the hand Danny Colleenand Claire go to Chinaand take them gal realizes that Ward killed him so he frames them for drug possessionand so Ward gets locked up in the asylum Harold of its joy to be his new number two Danny also made potato Colleen so teacher was also secretly when the 5 m of the handand find out about thisand is in the fan now this guy called divers who isnât that Dallas is days old friend from and he shows up to help Dannyand Colleen Joyce into saying that the hand probably his neck in the end after helping Dallas is like take the path to come on is open right nowand youâre supposed regarding it what the hell manand I was like well you know is boringand decides to team up with Haroldand joy to take on handand the Kudo but the kudos now working with wordand long story short is defeated but runs away Dallas is not a Danny but they work it out kind of data gets frame for drug stuffand goes in the runand Harold is the bag on the endand tries to take over the company Danny Lord in the big final battle team up kill Haroldand burn his corpse so he will come back to life now Ward is running the companyand Dallas teams of joyand maybe not out to kill Danny down the lineand then sends a team led by lecture to come on which again has no iron fist protecting it they kill a bunch of the monks there itâs pretty brutal the entrance is then close for safety so no one knows when itâll open up again because back to check out the passand find the city is goneand some abilityand he realizes he probably should state to protect it also Luke Cage sends Claire letter from prison because there still thing overand cover Taj at this point Casillas is starting to get kinda pissed with Angel on it if you like his training isnât getting him what he wants to start having some friction with most the Masters there also finds out that the angel on his drawing power from the dark dimension which he thinks is pretty have a critical because he must use the dark dimension to see his dead family againand to gain immortality but the angeland told him no because a bunch of people that the ancient one is withholding informationand they should bring tomato from the dark dimension to earth to golf it in eternity forms to rise up against the ancient one they break into the libraryand cover tiesand steal some pages from the ageless book about the dark dimension one tries to stop them but they get away in the end one point Rogers well the shielding goes to Mexicoand meets the human called yo yo who has superspeed who eventually joins the ranksand eventually becomes next girlfriend also Bobby Hunter leave the team because they were so staff spent off but that didnât happen somewhere venturesand Sue Shield has an inhuman team but highest the inhuman Hydra God takes control of Daisyâs mind because he can do thatand turns against the team just as a vision of the future where one of them diesand other important detail thereâs this group called the watchdogs which is basically inhuman racist who are going around killing humans as they plan by the way is to make every human in the worldand in human goes against Dr Ratcliff a scientist who he thinks can help them re create the original Cree experiment that native humans in the first place he realizes he needs actual Cree blood to do it so he sends a signal to the Creed to get some to come downand they do in a fight ensues theyâre both taken out but also rendered useless however some Cree blood from daisies used from when she was saved without original Cree corpse long story doesnât really matter experience go half rate asand it turns peopleand these gross disfigured mindless things meanwhile Scott laying after successfully cross job is still training is at man with Hankand hope that at some point here he upgrade to suitand test out new tech that allows him to become giant he tries it onceand passes out but hey it works Peter is continuing to Spiderman around the city at one point stopping a car crashand getting caught on camera the footage is uploaded to YouTubeand catches the eye of Tony Stark who keeps it in his watch later until he really needs it heâs got bigger stuff to think about right now is right around this point people are starting to take more notice of how much damage the superheroes have actually caused in their superheroand the guy whoâs all over this is unsurprisingly general Ross from the days he needs of the presidentand his appointed Secretary of Stateand start talking about how they can keep the stuff moreand check the start of on the ideas for the Segovia cords basically a way of regulating superheroes with more oversight by forcing them to register with the government while this is happening Frank Castle continues his killing spree of people who were involved in this familyâs murder going from truck murder to sniper murder to the bathroom murder is getting what he thinks is all them in a decides to move all of his life is the whole point the punisher was to avenge his family so thatâs done now or so he thinks also after lectures not has stopping daredevil for a few months now because heâs just too sad things are not bad though foggy Nelson get some helpand I got in the barbershopand clears the cages nameand Lucas at a prison loop is up with Claireand they get that coffee theyâd wanted Jessica Jones comes across lecture during one of her cases is still doing whatever the hand once rememberand objective Dragon bones under New York immortality the only problem is those Dragon bones are essential foundations for the city so the removal of them is causing serious earthquakesand could eventually to the whole city collapsing is also hiring a bunch of Harlem kids to help them kill and or clean up the mess is left behind by their enemies cages about this news like I got to protect the people of Harlemand Danny Randy is about this is like I gotta take a hand saw this lease to them crossing pathsand having a bit of a fight every day become friends because of their mutual friend Claire through fortuitous circumstances Jessicaâs tracking guy connected to the handand that Murdoch ends up being her lawyerand also gets interested in the case so all four of them end up at the hands buildingand start fighting their ninjas electro sent into daredevil surprise but doesnât remember him remind you of anyone but they all managed to get out of thereand go hide out in a Chinese restaurant where the become more acquainted state gets kidnapped by the hand but gets out of there by cutting off his own hand get itand goes to talk to the team Alexandraand had followed to see Alexandraand the hand is a whole knee iron fist alive because his iron fist is the key to open the gate to the sweet sweet Dragon bones if I happens electro starts remember who she isand that offenders get their hands on one of the hands main leaders also have their superhero team name is the defenders this guy is not of much help thoughand so stick to set off is not happy about this because theyâre running out of there immortality juice the defender starting though because theyâre like if the hand need you Danny we should probably had your wayand then he does what he does bestand is a whiny baby so theyâll punch him for a whileand then time however stickand typical stick fashion thinks that he might in the world so Iâm getting kill him but lecture shows upand kill stickand tasty on fist to the hand she also kills Alexandra as she wants to be in charge I guess Jessica Jones find out more about that whole get it will found a while back with hands digging for Dragon bones after Lilith over the police that offenders minus Danny fight the hand plus the got Colleen to help Danny accidentally opens the gates of the Dragon bones because of course he doesand other defenders are fighting to hand in a lecture while also trying to block building so the hand can destroy New York the kudos guild Misty Knight loses an armand the offenders whenand get out of there butback to talk to Bucky I mean Electra yesterday heard the building collapses on the master kissingand that he saved by some nuns think look that they savedand that doesnât actually die thank God itâs time to introduce another very important character very late in the game a Stephen strange is an amazing surgeon but heâs also super arrogantand kind of addictâs ex girlfriend also works with him called Rachel McAdams one day heâs drivingand textingand he crashes his car crushing his amazing surgeon hands in his life because he canât be an awesome surgeon anymoreand he somehow even more awful to sex than usual really his life is just falling apart he starts to find ways to heal himself however ridiculous eventually he comes across Jonathan born the guy who trained with the ancient oneand was cured so strange has two Taj is there more to one of the masters takes into the ancient one because of all the crazy ultra dimensions there are at least the trip used ones heâs like help me learnand sheâs like no your grossand sad in a terrible person but he pleadsand stays her door so she reluctantly changes her mind so strange thatâs learning how to control the Mystic artsand other dimensionsand make hologram shieldsand whatnot with the help of Moto the ancient oneand the bookkeeper Wong who he befriends is about the different symptomsand how they protect worldand trains for several months along the way he also stumbles upon the times done sitting in a handy necklace the INI tomato figures out how to been time with it more unwanted like you donât do that you could get stuck in a time loop anyway at one point you stuck to Mount Everest restraining just while all this other stuff is happening remember Stephen strange is getting great a magic this whole time so U ventures all trained upand going on missions also still looking for Bucky the next hydrogen in Lagosand think it might finally be Bucky but as they get there they realize itâs actually Brock Romo crossbones who understoodand is planning on suicide lineup himselfand Capt. From the capital nation to be only the abandoned government found wanting to you is down for lack of probably racial stories are for slavery would like we enjoyed helping our countries pushed the right from overcorrection Levi Roberts reports be noticeable degree for nearly a century was to story one of Americaâs years and will grow as he never heard her needs needs degree beating my hair as See Other related products: God Made Scots A Wee Bit Better T-Shirt
Write your RPer Resolutions for 2018! (What are some goals for yourself as a writer? Improve descriptions? Plot with more members? Etc.)
1. Be part of a big plot that causes an event. I want one of my characters to be involved/cause it or idk. I really want that.
2. I want to go through a whole arch for my characters. That would be super satisfying to go through that process.
3. Plot with more people. I feel like I stick with a few members and I want to expand that in some way. It would probably lead to some interesting things.
4. Have a short fling type ship. I feel like I always want to go for something permanent and lengthy and never try other things that develop my characters. But how about a dramatic short thing that goes down in flames.
Write at least one resolution, or âgoal,â that you have as an RPer for your character(s)Â
1. Goal for Celia: I want her to accidentally turn someone she cares about to stone and see the consequences of it. Is that a goal or a plot arch? Haha idk. My goal might be for her to be comfortable enough with someone to consider something beyond just a friendship. Sheâs really far away from that.
2. Goal for Vinny: have him cause a town drama somehow. He literally blows shit up. I want to cause some some sort of panic. I also do want to see his character grow a bit. Heâs very rooted in his grumpy sort of persona and not liking most people thing. So my goal would be to have him open up to a few more people maybe.
3. Goal for Louie: I want him to get into a huge amount of trouble. Thatâs what teens do right? I want him and some friends to do something monumentally stupid. Iâd also love for him to be manipulated by someone evil. Or I donât know just get into some ridiculous trouble with people like Andy or Mitte. Letâs cause some mayhem.
4. Goal for Jasmine: Have her run for the board next elections. Also have her real name revealed before that. I mean thatâd be ideal really. But have the whole plot happen and even better: have someone come to Agrabah with Jasmine. I really really want to explore Agrabah. Agrabah is really my main goal to go into with her.
Write at least one resolution IN CHARACTER for your characters. What do THEY want to accomplish or change in the New Year?
1. Celia: to get rid of her curse. Thatâs what she wants to accomplish. desperately.
2. Vinny: to create his business and work with animals and not really deal with people.
3. Louie: get a fake ID and start a job at the Court to get mad MONEY. His long term goal is to become filthy rich of course.
4. Jasmine: wants to do well in her classes and continue to remain unknown as a royal.
List one or more characters you have never interacted with that you would like to do so
man I have so many characters Iâd love to interact with. Iâll just go down the list with everyoneâs babes.
Phoebus: I think heâs one of the few mk characters I havenât interacted with, and I think heâd be interesting. Plus I get the feeling a couple of my characters could have brushes with the law so...idk.Â
Merida: I honestly donât think Iâve actually interacted with Merida? Which is kind of a shame because sheâs super interesting. I know itâs weird to say but I feel like she and Louie might agree with each other on things. Maybe? Heâs not exactly super pro magic cause heâs kind of a jerk. idk. so thatâd be interesting. Of course sheâs also going through some serious shit so I guess that would change things too. Idk but Merida.
Cruella: Iâve tech interacted with all of Avarickâs characters I think, but I really want Louie to meet Cruella ngl.
Jake: hmm what would be interesting there. Jake and Vinny? I donât know. I donât know much about Jake yet I have to think about that but Iâd love to write with him.
Jiminy: please give Celia some therapy. She could probably use it the most though she seems the most put together. Isnât that wild? Idk. Her or Vinny they could both use some therapy sessions.Â
Mateo: you know what would be funny? Sicking Louie on him and having him be the ultimate Elena defender just:Â âHow DARE you do that to THE PRINCESS OF AVALOR!!!â itâd be so fucking funny you know? Why donât we do this?
Percy: Iâve pitched this so Celia should meet him. I think itâd be super interesting.
Lena: Though I hate that her name is my name lmao I think she and Louie should maybe meet?
Ken: Iâve never met Ken and it is a true tragedy. I know I say Louie to a lot of things but Louie is in the closet and doesnât even know it. Cause heâs dumb. Iâd love for him and Ken to have a chat.
Deb: I think of Chloeâs characters Iâve never interacted with Deb? Iâm not sure who Iâd throw at her but Iâd like to succeed and interact with all of chloes wonders.
Lumiere: hello new person. I love Lumiere! Iâd love to throw Celia or Jasmine at him, see what happens really and what sort of direction you take him in.
Woody: for real I need to meet the sheriff somehow. Someway. Let it happen. Arrest one of my kids. Or just be their friend. That works too. Oo or maybe Celia and Woody after sheâs been used as a vamp snack.Â
Amelia: big fan of the character. I think she and Vinny could make really great friends potentially.Â
Duchess: I think technically Iâve met all of jabyâs, but Iâm not sure if Iâve really written with Duchess? Duchess and Louie? Louie loves fashion so thatâd be fun. Heâs poor of course so heâd have a crazy envy of her but yeah.Â
Raksha: I have never officially interacted with Raksha I think and that is a tragedy. Iâd love for her and Celia to chat or even Raksha and Jasmine. Or I donât know. Iâd love to just have the ladies hang.
Gregory: god I see him from a distance and I admire him. What a wonderful sunshine-y character. Iâm not sure yet who Iâd throw at him but Iâd love to brainstorm something fun. Ooo actually maybe Jasmine. Jasmine and Eeyore take on politicians or something. That could be super fun.
Jessie: Big fan of the character. Iâd love to interact with her. Dunno with who but Iâll brainstorm that one.
Reese: He seems like a real sweetheart. Iâd love for him to be friends with Celia or something.
Marisa: I think otherwise Iâve interacted with all of Mckalaâs in some way probably. But damnnn. Give me your other mermaid. Maybe wiiiiith Celia? Idk that could be interesting.
Frederick: WOW YES! First of all I love his fc. Just personal love. Second, can he meet Celia and be her friend? Or more importantly can Louie meet him and discover his sexuality stuff? God idk but Iâd love to meet him.
Lymantria: Never met her I donât think and Iâd love to change that! Uhhh perhaps let Jasmine and Lymantria meet?
Megara: One of my fave characters from Hercules gd. Please letâs write her and idk Jasmine? Jasmine loves powerful women and so do I.
Simon: I think I said in a voice thing but he seems like an interesting dude. Iâd like to meet him somehow.
Shere: Idk have we had Shere interact with one of mine? I donât think so. Not yet. Letâs do that. Oo let Louie ride a tiger. Yeah? xP
Ralph: man I love Ralph as a character. I think he and Celia could make some good friends. idk. Iâd just like to meet Ralph in general tbh.
Sofia: Sofia and Jasmine. And someday perhaps Sofia and Elena and Jasmine and Isabel for a Princess Squad gathering? Idk I just like the idea of uniting the royals.
Elsa: I still maintain Elsa and Vinny would be an entertaining thread.
Shock: I have yet to meet her but she could be yet another bad influence on Louie if we wanted her to be. OrÂ
Dewey: in other news, we need to have the brothers interact lmao I suck.
Plotting Exercise! Pick one of the resolutions/goals in #2 and plan a rough guideline to how you could accomplish it. Hereâs an example. EXAMPLE OF A MOCK PLOT: MILO FINDS A MERLINâS OBJECT
Para One: Louie goes to Andy for a fake ID
Para Two: Louie uses that to work at the Court and ends up meeting someone sketch like Desoto or idk Shock or someone.
Para Three: Desoto convinces Louie to be a drug handler guy on the side of working at the court.
Para Four: Donald finds some of the drugs stashed in Louieâs room while cleaning it. Cue explosion/fight and punishment
Para Five: Despite disappointment, Louie sneaks the hell out and continues to try to make more money and goes back to Desoto/whoever the drug dealer guy is.
AO3
 --
 Emma took a breath before approaching her wife in her office. She was hoping sheâd be agreeable to actually come home at a human time tonight.
  âRegina?â Emma knocked three times, before walking in to the office.
  The mayor was up to her eyes in paper work, it had been like this for months, she was making herself sick and Emma wasnât having it anymore.
  âWhat is it Emma? Iâm busy. I wonât be home for dinner.â
  âYouâre never home for dinner.â Emma muttered as she closed the door.
  âExcuse me?â Regina snarled, looking up from her work and putting her glasses from her face onto the papers in front of her.
  âI said youâre never home for dinner.â
  âEmma, I have work, Iâm busy.â
   âNo. Regina, youâre making yourself sick and tonight you are coming home at a normal fucking time.â Emma demanded
  âOh? Are you going to make me?â
  âNo. Regina I expect you to do as I ask because I love you and Iâm worried.â
  âAnd if I donât?â Regina raised an eyebrow
  âThen Iâll drag you out this office myself and I will be sleeping on the couch.â
  âWhat?â Regina gasped, as she stood up slowly and walked towards her wife âYou would sleep on the couch over me working? Thatâs ridiculous!â
  âNo itâs not ridiculous Regina, you are working way too much, I have hardly seen the past few months, and Henry has hardly seen you. Regina youâre six months fucking pregnant, with twins at that! Itâs not just yourself you need to worry about anymore, you canât be working like this when theyâre born, you are making yourself ill...I mean when is the last time you ate something? Or slept?â
  âEmma...â Regina sighed
  âIâm just worried about you. My wife who works so god damn hard and so much to make this town happy, that she forgets to take care of herself...â Emma paused, as she walked a few steps towards Regina taking a hold of her at the side of her body, rubbing up and down her arms. âPlease just come home tonight, Regina please, Iâm begging you and this isnât the place I like to beg.â Emma trembled with worry, as the tears somehow started all on their own
  âOkay, darling, okay. Iâll be home, Iâm sorry Emma...â Regina wiped the tears from the blondeâs face with her knuckles, holding Emmaâs chin in the crook of her other hand âI never meant to worry you so much, I didnât-â
  âI know babe, you didnât know, I should have said something sooner.â
  âYes. Now what time do you want me home at and Iâll make it my priority.â Regina smiled
  âSay no later than six?â Emma asked, hoping Regina wouldnât actually leave it till the last minute, to come home at.
  âOkay, Iâll be there at half past five. What are you planning for dinner anyway?â
  âI was going to make my home made burgers and fries, if youâre good with that?â
  âWell considering itâs about the only thing you can cook without burning down the house other than grilled cheese and that doesnât count as proper foof, then yes, but you only do that on special occasions?â Regina frowned, unsure what warranted it to be a special occasion, so to speak.
  âWell it is a special occasion. Iâm getting my wife back.â
   --
 Emma already had the food plated up, when Regina walked in the door.
  The mayor took off her coat, hanging it up by the door and putting her bag down, Regina walked into the kitchen still in her heels and leaned against the door.
  âSomething smells good.â
  Emma just chuckled âYeah, itâs ready, come and sit down. Cream soda?â
  âPlease. Whereâs Henry?â Regina frowned seeing only two plates, and then smiling when she noticed the candles âIs this a date night?â
  âHeâs with Violet, Luna, Alex and Simon, heâll be back at god knows what time, heâs going out drinking, and yes it is indeed madam mayor.â
  âThis is beautiful darling.â Regina smiled, walking up behind Emma and giving her a kiss on the cheek. âYou were right I needed to not work so hard.â Regina went and sat down at the table and Emma bought the drinks over, a cream soda for Regina and a root beer for herself.
  âHow are our little munchkins today?â Emma asked as she sat beside her wife
  âKicking. A fucking lot.â Regina sighed as they both started to dig into their food.
  Over the next hour, they talked a lot, they spoke about cutting down Reginaâs work hours considering she was pregnant and would probably deliver early, Emma wanted Regina to be under as little stress as possible, Regina actually agreed. Then they just laughed and talked until they both finished their food, they just relaxed.
  --
  Regina sat on the couch waiting for Emma to start the movie âYouâve gone all out tonight, even putting on my favourite movie.â Regina smiled, sitting in her panties and a flannel top with her hands rubbing soothing circles on her pregnant belly.
  Emma put on the first film, they had about 10 films set out, so they could watch a few, the first film they chose was âCarolâ, then they had âimagine me and youâ and a whole load of other lesbian films.
  The blonde came and sat on the couch that Regina had now magicked to expand, both width and length ways, mainly so they could be more comfy.
  Emma sat at the top, opening her legs for Regina to sit between at which the brunette did. Regina then leaned back into Emmaâs arms, holding onto her wife and Emma kissed the top of Reginaâs head âI love you Gina.â
  âI love you too, Darling.â Regina smiled, sounding sleepy
  âYou better not fall asleep on me.â Emma chuckled
  âI wonât.â
 Emma just shook her head, knowing full well that by the time the sex scene came on the television, Regina would be asleep.
  âGod Cate is so fucking hot.â Regina smirked
  âExcuse me?â Emma teased
  âOh not as hot as you dear, never as hot as you, but you canât deny the very fact that she is gorgeous.â
  Emma just laughed and nodded in agreement.
  Emma couldnât help but laugh softly to herself, when she heard the soft snore for Regina as she cuddled into her and soon enough Emma was fast asleep too, her arms wrapped around her wife, one hand on Reginaâs pregnant belly and the other hand tangled up in the brunetteâs, wedding rings sitting on top of each other.
 --Â
Henry came home a little earlier than expected, just as the credits of the film started.
  He knew to come in quietly, just in case his moms were fighting again, especially with Regina working all the hours she was and her crazy hormones from the pregnancy, however when he walked over towards the couch he saw the credits from the film and then saw how much bigger the couch was than before which made him frown.
  Henry then couldnât help but smile, seeing his Moms cuddled up on the couch; he grabbed a warm blanket and threw it over the two woman, before turning off the television.
  He didnât know how but somehow he knew Emma had convinced his brunette mother to at least come home early tonight and it was a start, for her to cut down her hours properly.
  Henry watched for a few minutes before, kissing each mother on the forehead and making his way up to his bed, leaving his Moms to sleep. He loved seeing the both of them cuddled up together, it always reminded him about how lucky he was to have this as his family.
Divide- chapter 5- How Would You Feel
The minute she hit the send button she wished she could take it back. But, just like Harryâs Instagram like, somethings you simply couldnât.
Like telling Harry she loved him on their last weekend together.
It wasnât the first time she felt it. Sheâs been swallowing the words like a jagged little pill for months. Sheâd embraced the feeling when they were in Barcelona, she was a woman in love, so she wore it like a mantle. Everything about the experience felt magical, but, when she returned to her real life and Harry to tour, things continued just as they had since she let Harry kiss her the first time after months of obvious innuendo. The boy was cheeky and flirty on a good day, but irresistible when he was trying. And so she didnât resist, but had she guarded her heart a little maybe it wouldnât be broken. Or so slow to mend.
When their lips met she learned all of those cliches about electricity and sparks and stars getting in your eyes were true. Her stomach and the bottom dropped out. When his large decorated hands had cupped her face she never wanted to stop and when heâd clutched her throat, the rush of blood to her core meant she wouldnât.
Laurel wasnât a virgin, but her experience had been limited. Limitless better described how she felt when Harry touched her. She probably fell that first night.
The ground was hard when she hit it and she was sure sheâd bruised her ass when Harry gave her his rules of engagement. âHarryâs rulesâ as they became emblazoned in her mind were simple. When it was convenient and easy they would hang out, he didnât expect her to be faithful, but if she had a partner between their trysts, theyâd use a condom until she got tested again, if she met someone, the arrangement ended. Same rules for him. Laurel was surprised every time he didnât open the little drawer by his bed when they reunited. Sheâd had one other partner since beginning with him and the very attractive hipster of a boy did such an amazing job of illustrating what she was not missing, she never bothered again.
When they were available they fit like a zipper, and it was so good to be embedded with him that Laurel could overlook his cavalier attitude. It was always after he left, again, that sheâd remember that while he seemed to truly like her, he didnât know her. Basic facts escaped him, she wasnât sure Harry even knew her middle name. He certainly didnât know anything about her family. That her sister had died when she was 11 in a car accident. Or that her parents were in love with one another, but divorced.
Despite this, she knew her feelings for him were unlikely to fade quickly. He was inescapable. Even when she tried to ignore his stupid face, his dimples showed up on her screen. Laurel wasnât even sure she wanted to erase the way she felt. Being with Harry felt like zip lining, heart pumping, exhilarating, free.
The first time she had to physically stop her mouth to halt her confession had been a few months into their arrangement. They were sitting in a parked car outside Harryâs marketing managerâs country estate. Heâd been avoiding going in. It was an expected band function. Someone with connections had a daughter with a major 1D jones. They hadnât done many of these private events since the early days, but the favor that Simon would have in his pocket after today was apparently too good too miss. So, they were summoned with the promise of a handsome reward. Though the boys had more autonomy these days, Harry and crew still knew where their bread was buttered.
âIâd so much rather be spending this day, well, anywhere but here really, especially if you were there!â He cheesed her way and bopped her nose and was generally being so obnoxious she laughed in his face.
âYou laughing at me?â He asked as he pulled her across his center console into his lap and tickled her until she was screaming and snorting in the ugliest fashion she could imagine. She hated her braying laugh.
He stopped abruptly when the snorting started. Once she caught her breath, Laurel wiped at her nose, âoh god, did I snot too?â
âNo, that laugh just might be my favorite sound.â
The late afternoon sunlight made the blue rim of his iris shine and she felt the words sheâd been denying bubbling up her throat. To stop herself, she covered her mouth and made big eyes at him before she kissed him and made a joke. âYou know what my favorite sound is?â Mischief played in her eyes.
âMy laugh, the ding of a text message youâve been expecting from me, hearing me on radio, my morning voice?â Harry knew he was being an ass and was loving it.
âThe sound of your snores when you finally shut up at night,â she feigned relief.
âI donât snore!â Harry vehemently denied.
âOh, you do, loudly! But, itâs still preferable to your other sounds, especially what you call singing!â Oh, she loved his offended face. âKidding, baby, kidding,â and she kissed him once again before cracking his door open.
âHey, where you going?â He made grabby hands for her.
âIâm going inside, and look, Iâm not even getting paid to!â She teased.
Once inside, she kept her distance and her hands to herself. Everyone knew they were friends, but Harry had a lot of friends.
The second time Laurel nearly shouted out her feelings, Harryâd agreed to come to a house party with her and she couldnât believe it. Their âdatesâ nearly always took place between his four walls, usually between his two sheets, so when she asked about the party, it was mostly to confirm her suspicions about her place in his life and heart. But he said yes and they planned out their couples costume with giddy giggles. It was really easy to procure his Kermit costume online and she really only needed a pig nose and wig. She had a dress from her momâs youth that was at least 4 ruffles over the top.
The costume allowed Harry anonymity and she knew he loved fancy dress a bit more than the average person. She was fairly certain it was why heâd agreed. The inside joke was too fun to pass up. Laurel had given Harry the moniker of Kermie one morning when heâd croaked out a greeting, his eyes had been glued shut with sleep and his dimples widened his puffy sleepy face.
âOh my God! You really do look like a frog,â she hiccuped out after laughing for 3 minutes straight.
Harry had turned into the bed sheets and pouted like the younger sibling he very much was, until she had given him an âIâm sorryâ blowie and promised him pancakes. However, the nickname had stuck, much to Harryâs displeasure.
Laurel was so chuffed that heâd come out, she didnât notice his slow withdrawal. Late that night, after many drinks heâd asked her to follow him up to the roof.
âHarry, baby, whatâs wrong?â She asked as he immediately pulled off his mask and sucked in a breath.
âHavenât been able to breathe properly in at least an hour. Itâs hot in there. Whew.â He blew out a big breath and she watched his chest expand as he sucked one in.
âWhy are we up here then, we can go. I just need to find my purse,â she fidgeted and turned back to the door.
âNo, just let me cool off. I know we are trying to avoid detection, and we never get to go anywhere together. I like seeing you with your friends,â he touched her bottom lip and smoothed his thumb her growing smile. âTheyâre funny. I like them. Tomâs got it bad for you by the way.â
âYou jealous?â Laurel laughed, how ludicrous.
âNo, maybe a little, heâs a bit handsy. I donât really like it.â
âHarryâŠâ she trailed off.
âI know, I have no right,â he interrupted her search for words.
âYou have no right, but you also have nothing to worry about,â Laurel returned.
âYeah, whyâs that?â
She wanted to say, 'because I love you, you idiotâ. But, instead she made a joke. âIâve seen him eat, trust me, the thought of spending 50 years watching that across a table put me right off,â then she grinned at him, âhe goes tongue first and Iâm not interested in teaching another baby bird how to kiss.â
Harry rose to her bait and gave her his offended face, âIâll show you how to kiss,â he advanced on her while she ran away giggling. He caught her easily they wound up making love on the roof with all their clothes on because of the chill. To ward off the cold they kept their arms wrapped around each other and watched their breath until the sunrise replaced the moon. After sunrise, they snuck out undetected through the passed out revelers.
But for all the times she felt compelled to confess her feelings, when she felt like a girlfriend and not just a fuck, there were many more times she was sure she was just an option.
Heâd go months at a time without a text. They could have plans for sometime in advance and heâd change them on a dime. Laurel would like to think it was for work things, but he was too public a person for her to labor under that delusion sometimes.
But, the most telling thing was how one-sided their arrangement was. Harry called the shots, always his terms, always his place, always his convenience. Laurel was his beck and call girl, his favorite perhaps, but not his only.
That last weekend, Laurelâd been emotional before she got there. Her mother was sick and heâd been away for what felt like forever. She felt funny, like her body wasnât her own. Tired and weepy.
They had a good time, but he hadnât noticed her red eyes or sallow skin. When he was inside her early Sunday morning, heâd been sweet and gentle, full of praise. It felt so much like love making and her walls against him were so gossamer that sheâd let the words slip out when she came undone.
âI love you,â sheâd whispered on a quiet harsh exhalation.
Laurel had seen his eyes widen, but heâd just buried his face in her neck and pushed into her deeper. Though their bodies remained connected, her heart broke. Sheâd held her tears until heâd fallen asleep and left while he showered.
She couldnât do this anymore, the reasons kept piling up. Laurel had cried herself out and wanted to bash his face in when he sent her that Kermit gif.
She needed to move on, she couldnât be spending her life falling deeper in love with him if he couldnât tell her that he loved her too. If he didnât love her too.
But here she was, texting him at 2 am while Willy, who took her out, showed her off, and asked her questions about herself like he needed to take notes, slept in her bed. Laurel was not an option to Willy.
Laurel could see that heâd read her message and her heart raced when the gray bubble appeared.
Why did he have to be the one.
Evil!Metis AU (Blackbright, Athena and Bobby friendship, Bobby POV, Angsty) Part 1 of 2: After the 1st part of the AU!Turnabout For Tomorrow trial, Athena recovered her memories of her childhood and the true nature of AU!Metis. Bobby is emotionally down after being without Simon (who is on a leave for the trial and is avoiding him), learning that the missing woman he searched for years is dead, and learning that said woman is awful and used Athena (her child) in experiments.
Evil!Metis AU (Blackbright, Athena and Bobbyfriendship, Bobby POV, Angsty) Part 2 of 2: So Athena and Bobby are piecingtogether the evidence (mostly Athena since Bobby is emotionally down) and aftera failed talk with Aura, they slowly come to realize it was only Simon that didthe murder and hid and buried the body in the metal box. Bobby goes in abreakdown over learning about truth and his feelings for Simon and itâs up toAthena to calm him down. Details is up to you.
Note: Sorry for sending another Evil!Metis promptwhile you are working on the other one, itâs just that this new prompt hit meand I wanted to type it down before I lose the thought. (Note: Write it afteryou are done with the Claypollo one, take all the time your need with bothprompts, keep up the good work!)
Evil!Metis AU anon: If you ever want to post theasks I sent to your ao3 account and/or expand upon the ideas, you are free todo so.
If you need some help brainstorming for theEvil!Metis AU Blackbright prompt I sent a while back (in hindsight, it was alittle vague), Iâll send in extra add-ons (if I am not too late with this):Yuri Cosmos was the one that hired Fulbright to find the âmissingâMetis in the first place. So Fulbright partnered up with Simon since Simon wasthe last one seen with Metis (then later he starts fall in love with Simonromantically around the same time Simon starts to fall in love with him back).
Donât be sorry!  I know I take kind of a long time with these;it really is mostly because I find AUs sometimes to be difficult to wrap my headaround and figure out (which is why most of the stuff I write centers aroundcanon stuff).  AndâŠwell my recent writerâsblock has not helped much, sadly.
And Iâll think aboutit!  For stuff like this I would want totry and piece it together in a more coherent story rather than a series ofone-shot type things, but Iâll let you know if I end up piecing it all togetherat some point!  I also have my longfic Iwant to finish and then some others in planning stagesâŠif I can get over thiswriting block that Iâve been unfortunately dealing with, sigh. Â
Also, thanks for theextra details! Â Like I said, AU thingstend to be somewhat more difficult for me for whatever reason. Â
â-
âHeâs still not answeringâŠâ
Detective Bobby Fulbright sighed and finally put his phoneaway after trying Simon for about the fourth or fifth time.  He was standing outside the courthouse,leaning against one of the trees that had been planted decades ago asdecoration.  The trial had let out not that long ago, yet Simon was nowhere tobe found and was still dodging any attempt of Bobbyâs to contact him.  He didnât understandâŠhe would think thatSimon would want to talk to him about some of the things that had just beenrevealed in court and maybe plan a strategy on how to proceed from here, butinstead he was getting the cold shoulder.
Why?
It was bad enough that Metis Cykes had been apparently deadfor years. Â Deep down, perhaps Bobby hada feeling â after all, most missing persons cases that go longer thantwenty-four hours end in death. Â Seven years? They were definitely looking for a body, not a live person. Â
Bobby held out hope for a long time, but his instinct toldhim that he ought to have expected this.
What he didnâtexpect in any capacity was the reveal about the deceasedâs true nature: sheapparently cared naught for her child in any capacity other than as anexperimental subject. Â A scientist whowas more concerned with her own research than with the people around her â she filledsome of the âmad scientistâ stereotypes, apparently. Â
Maybe it was better that she was dead.
Bobby shook his head to try and rid himself of that shamefulthought â no, there was no justice in her murder. Â Ridding evil by committing another evil? Â Justice does not come about by acts ofinjustice.
âDetective Fulbright!â
Bobby lifted his head and looked around to see Athena Cykesrunning towards him. Â He tried his bestto appear as his normally cheerful self â she was dealing with something farworse than he has, after all. Â But evenas he smiled and saluted her when she approached him, he knew he couldnât foolthose ears of hers. Â
All Athena heard was sadness when he spoke. Â Sadness and confusion.
âHave you seen Simon? I canât find him anywhere!â  Shepanted a bit, trying to catch her breath; from the looks of her, she had beenrunning for a whileâŠprobably trying to find Prosecutor Blackquill, as he wastrying to do.  Bobby shook his head.
âNo Miss CykesâŠIâve been trying to call him but he isnâtanswering his cell phone.â  He put hishands on his hips and laughed loudly, as if maybe acting happy would actuallylift his mood somewhat.  âHeâll probablybe annoyed with me after all the lengthy voicemails I left him!â
But Athena just gave him a sympathetic look.  âYou donât need to pretend, DetectiveFulbrightâŠâ  She knew he was upset, asshe was, and being unable to locate Simon was not helping either of them.  PlusâŠthey each had a very uncomfortablefeeling in the pit of their stomachsâŠone that they could not currentlyidentify. Â
Bobby sighed as his face fell.  âI donât understand why he would avoid usright now.  ItâŠdoesnât make sense.â Â
âNo,â Athena said, looking up to the sky and playing withher earring with a thoughtful expression on her face.  âI mean, if he didnât know about my momâsâŠactualpersonality, wouldnât he want to talk with us about it?  It could mean that someone figured things outand killed her because of it, right?  Anew motiveâŠâ
âMaybe he needs to just take some time to sort everythingout on his own. Â You know aboutProsecutor Blackquill can be!â Â
âBut wouldnât he want to figure out who killed his mentor assoon as possible?  I donât knowâŠsomethingseems off.  And the case with my momâsbody in itâŠwho had access to it?  I mean,it was primarily in her lab, right?â Â
That uncomfortable feeling in Bobbyâs stomach got worse â the people primarily in Metisâlab were herself, her daughter, her partner (who was in love with her and had an alibi for the day of themurder), andâŠher protĂ©gĂ©.  Most other people,from the interviews they conducted, tended to stay away in order to let thegenius scientist work. Â
âTechnically anyone in the space station could have gottento it, right?â Â He offered, wanting tochase away the dread that washed over him.
âI guess, but-â Athena cut off her own sentence when she saw Aura Blackquill exiting thecourthouse doors. Â âMs. Blackquill! Â Hey!â She pulled on Bobbyâs arm to get him to follow her, and he did. Â Aura was looking worse than anyone â her eyeswere puffy and her nose red despite the hard glare she gave the two ofthem. Â It was obvious she had been crying. Â
âWhat is it, little princess?â Â Her voice was harsh and hoarse and she puther hand on her hip.
âIâŠIâm sorry about what happened,â Athena said, her voicesoftening as she grabbed onto her own arm and looked away.  Surprisingly, Aura laughed.  But it wasnât a happy laugh â it was bitterand cold.
âWhy are you apologizing? All you did was expose the truth that the woman Iâve loved for so longis not only dead but was also amonster.â Â Her tone was accusatory, soBobby spoke up.
âH-Hey you shouldnât yell at Athena. Â Because of her weâre closer to finding-â
âZip it, detective. Â Iâmnot in the mood.â
Bobby did as he was told.
Aura sighed. Â âListen,I know you were doing your job, alright? It still sucks, though.â
Athena nodded in agreement. âIâŠI know.  But we need to keeppursuing the truth, no matter how painful it may be!â  She echoed her boss and his childhood friendwhen she said that, both mentors in their own right.  âSo if I may ask-â
âYou may not.â
Athena blinked, not expecting such uncooperativeness fromAura. Â
âMaybe tomorrow. Â Butnot right now.â Â Aura laughed a bitagain, still bitter and sad. Â âReally, Iâmsurprised youâre so gung-ho about this right now, little princess. Â I mean, you just found out that the onlyperson who really cared about you backthen was my little brother. Â Shouldnâtyou be a bit more broken up about that?â
Before waiting for Athena to answer, Aura was walking off.
Bobby put his hand on Athenaâs shoulder.  âSheâŠdidnât mean that.  Sheâs just upset!  We can try talking with her again tomorrow.â
Athena nodded.  âSheâŠisright though.  I guess Simon was the only one who really cared aboutme back thenâŠâ
Her voice trailed off for a moment. Â
âH-Hey, Detective Fulbright. You donât thinkâŠSimonâŠ?â
Bobby recoiled as if she had physically assaulted him.  His face went white as she suggested at thevery thing that had been making him feel sick to his stomach since the triallet out before.  ââŠNo.  No, Miss Cykes, thatâŠthat isnât possible.â
âWhy not?  I meanâŠifSimon was the one who cared about me andâŠI mean, he did spend more time withher than anyone else aside from Ms. BlackquillâŠmaybe he learned about who shewas andâŠwanted to protect me.â
âStop, Athena-â
âAnd he was one of the few people who had access to my momâslabâŠand everything in it.  Including thatmetal box.â
Motive, access, a lack of an alibi, the intellect to pullthis all off, and not to mention his current avoidance of the two of themâŠSimonBlackquill appeared to be the only one who could have murdered Metis Cykes.
âNo. Â No. Â No.â
Bobby kept repeating that word over and over and over again, as if saying it could washaway the realization that Simon killedMetis.
Simon, whom he had grown to love and cherish and believe in lied to him and was amurderer. Â
He didnât want to believe it despite all the signs of itstruth.
Before he knew it, he was crying and almosthyperventilating, unable to see anything other than the mental image of Simonplunging his katana through Metisâ body and then covering his tracks soexpertly as to fool the authorities for sevenyears.
And that image was alongside the ones of his many favoritemoments with Simon; their first case together, where he made some rookie errorsand earned the nickname of âFool Bright.â Their times spent at the aquarium, where Bobby realized he loved the waySimonâs eyes would light up when they would visit the penguin exhibit.  Their first kiss, where Simon surprised Bobbyby grabbing onto his white jacket and pulling him inâŠBobby had no idea howSimon had felt up until that point.  Andall the kisses and laughs and happinesssince then. Â
Was itâŠall a lie?
He was kneeling on the ground and clutching at his chest,and only Athenaâs voice pulled him out of his mind.
âDetective Fulbright! You need to breatheâŠâ  She grabbedonto his face to get him to look at her. âInâŠoutâŠinâŠoutâŠâ  She repeatedthat until Fulbrightâs eyes focused on her and he mirrored her actions, slowlyregaining his breath but still crying. Â
âHeâŠhe did it, didnât he?â
Athena didnât nod, but the look in her eyes said enough. Â She thought so too. Â
âWeâll find out the truth in court.â
Newsom Likes To âGo Bigâ But Doesnât Always Deliver
Gavin Newsom knew it was a political gamble when, as the newly elected mayor of San Francisco, he promised to eradicate chronic homelessness.
âI recognize that Iâm setting myself up. Iâm not naive to that,â he told his hometown newspaper in 2003 as he embarked on a campaign to sell his controversial plan. It hinged on slashing welfare payments for homeless people and redirecting those funds to acquire single-room occupancy hotels, converting them into long-term housing with health and social services.
âI donât want to over-promise, but I also donât want to under-deliver,â he said.
Over-promise he did, and the venture ultimately failed. But that pledge by Newsom â who at the time was a young, politically connected wine shop owner relatively new to public office â previewed a brand of political leadership on full display today as the first-term governor confronts an unprecedented public health emergency that has decimated the stateâs economy and killed more than 4,280 Californians.
The COVID-19 pandemic has catapulted the 52-year-old Democrat into greater national prominence, winning him praise and voter support for taking decisive action to control the spread of infection in the absence of strong federal leadership.
But it has also exposed his penchant for making ambitious, showy announcements â often broadcast to a national audience â that arenât necessarily ready for prime time. His plans regularly lack detail and, in some cases, follow-through.
âThis governor wants to get a lot done even if all the details arenât quite there yet. Itâs uniquely his approach,â said Democratic strategist Dana Williamson, longtime adviser to former Gov. Jerry Brown. âHe isnât afraid to go big. The upside is establishing yourself as a real leader and, in the case of COVID, saving lives. But the downside is it doesnât always work out quite perfectly.â
Newsom has a long history of pushing big ideas before they become popular, including legalizing gay marriage and recreational marijuana use, halting death penalty executions and expanding free health care for undocumented immigrants. Since his entry into public life, he has cultivated the image of a political risk-taker willing to buck the Democratic Party establishment. And although he has demurred, there is widespread speculation that Newsom has presidential ambitions.
Since the start of the pandemic, Newsom has been praised by public health experts and Democratic strategists for making politically courageous decisions such as enacting the nationâs first statewide stay-at-home order, preventing widespread sickness and death. He has dramatically expanded hospital capacity while seeking to attack major problems as they erupt, from dire shortages of protective gear for hospital workers to inadequate testing in rural towns and poor, inner-city neighborhoods.
But as the crisis wears on, the list of Newsomâs unfulfilled promises is growing:
On April 7, he told MSNBC host Rachel Maddow that he had inked a deal securing âupwardsâ of 200 million protective masks per month, enough to âsupply the needs of the state of California â potentially the needs of other Western states.â But nearly two months later, just 61 million surgical masks have arrived in California, while no higher-caliber N95 masks have been delivered, according to Brian Ferguson, spokesperson for the state Office of Emergency Services â despite Newsomâs promise that the deal included at least 150 million N95s. The $1 billion effort has been riddled with flaws, and the state so far has taken back nearly $250 million from the Chinese contractor, BYD Ltd. Co.
Later that month, Newsom announced a deal with Motel 6 that would provide thousands of rooms for homeless people in need of shelter. At least 5,025 Motel 6 rooms at 47 sites would open their doors to homeless people, âeffective immediately,â should counties opt in, he said. But to date, just 628 Motel 6 rooms are open to homeless people at six sites.
Newsom also said in April that California must dramatically expand COVID-19 testing before it reopens to at least 60,000 â ideally 80,000 â tests per day. But the state still has not consistently reached 60,000 tests per day, even as it has allowed most counties to ease their stay-at-home restrictions.
In other cases, the governor has artfully avoided making specific promises. For instance, he has called the safety of nursing home patients and staff members a âtop priorityâ without detailing plans, allowing him to dodge criticism even as more than half the deaths in California have occurred in long-term care facilities, according to state data.
Yet so far Newsom is showing strong support from Californians. Nearly 70% of likely voters say heâs doing a good job of handling the pandemic, according to a new poll released Wednesday by the Public Policy Institute of California. His overall approval rating has climbed by double digits since February, rising from 52% to 64%.
But his support could erode if the public begins to notice that his promises â and lofty rhetoric â do not match reality, said Mark Baldassare, president and CEO of the institute.
âPeople can be forgiving and give the governor the benefit of the doubt, but that can turn from positive to negative very quickly,â Baldassare said. âThe risk is public opinion can shift very quickly if people get a sense that itâs not going well or according to expectations.â
Although Newsom himself has acknowledged criticism that the state is falling short on some fronts, his chief spokesperson Nathan Click defended the governorâs approach.
âWhen itâs your life or livelihood on the line, wouldnât you want leaders who are moving aggressively to help people on every possible front?â Click said in a statement. âHeâs not afraid to swing for the fences â especially in a time of massive need.â
Daniel Zingale, Newsomâs former chief adviser, who retired earlier this year, argued that the governorâs handling of the pandemic has saved countless lives while bolstering the social safety net for those at greatest risk of contracting the coronavirus.
âWhen you have a crisis like this that is unprecedented, there is no real playbook,â Zingale said. âI think Gavin Newsom was made for this moment. This is a situation where you want a governor who is high-energy, deeply earnest and prone to action rather than inaction.â
***
Newsomâs political career dates back to the late 1990s, when he was appointed to San Franciscoâs parking and traffic commission by its then-mayor, Willie Brown. Soon thereafter, Brown tapped Newsom to fill an open seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Running as the incumbent in 1998, Newsom was elected that year to his first full term on the board.
During his early years in public life, he honed his approach to politics â aggressively seeking national media attention for first-in-the-country social and economic policies. In 2004, the year he took office as mayor, Newsom granted same-sex couples marriage licenses before it was legal, and in 2006 he signed into law the nationâs first universal health care program, which covered all city residents regardless of their immigration status or ability to pay.
Newsom, in his 2013 book âCitizenville,â described his leadership approach as âReady, fire, aim.â
âIâm as proud of some of my failures in business and politics as I am of my successes,â he wrote. âFailure isnât something to be embarrassed about; itâs just proof that youâre pushing your limits, trying new things, daring to innovate.â
Newsom believes strongly in setting âaudacious goals,â even if he risks over-promising or alienating supporters, said Peter Ragone, who was press secretary for part of Newsomâs mayoral tenure.
âGavin has always believed that if you show people youâre thinking big and trying hard, they will take that over timidity, even if you might fail,â said Ragone, who remains a close, informal adviser to Newsom and also advises New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. âHe wasnât able to completely eradicate homelessness, but the voters were OK with that because they saw he was trying. Success doesnât have to be an absolute policy triumph.â
Now Newsom is facing the biggest challenge of his political career, with several high-profile crises slamming California at once: A global public health emergency. Widespread civil unrest sparked by the killing of an African American man in Minnesota, George Floyd, at the hands of a white police officer, Derek Chauvin. Rising unemployment that could reach 30%. And another potentially devastating wildfire season.
The coronavirus pandemic, in particular, could have long-lasting consequences for Newsomâs future, said Dr. Leonard Marcus, co-director of the National Preparedness Leadership Initiative, a joint program of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
âThe politics of crisis leadership are high-consequence,â Marcus said. âFor every political leader, a crisis like this is going to make or break their career.â
George Chin, 80, lived in a nursing home in Woodland, California, until April 22, when he died of COVID-19, according to his family. Chin died six days after he first complained of shortness of breath and spiked a high fever. (Courtesy of Simon Chin)
Davis resident Simon Chin has grown disillusioned with Newsom since the start of the crisis.
Chinâs father, 80-year-old George Chin, lived in Stollwood Convalescent Hospital in nearby Woodland. Chin regularly tuned into Newsomâs public briefings on the crisis to hear the governor say he was committed to preventing infections in nursing homes and protecting staff members and residents.
But infections in senior care homes continued to rise. And although Newsom has called for universal testing of residents and staffers, the state hasnât provided the resources to make that happen, said Jason Belden, emergency preparedness director for the California Association of Health Facilities, which represents Californiaâs roughly 1,200 state-regulated nursing homes.
State Health and Human Services Secretary Mark Ghaly said itâs the responsibility of nursing homes, not the state, to test.
âItâs not what weâre doing, and itâs, in our view, not feasible,â Ghaly said in an interview, noting that across the state, there are about 119,000 nursing home beds and about 90,000 staff members.
Newsomâs rhetoric at times has given the public a false sense of hope, said Dr. Michael Wasserman, president of the California Association of Long Term Care Medicine.
âWhen it comes to vulnerable older adults in California, all this governor has been doing is saying heâs going to act, heâs going to help them, but he hasnât actually taken action,â Wasserman said. âPeople are dying because of it.â
Newsomâs reassuring statements during his public briefings made Chin feel like the state was doing more to prevent widespread infections, he said.
But Chinâs father died of COVID-19 on April 22. State records show 15 residents â roughly half of the nursing homeâs capacity â died of the disease.
âWe had no idea that there were such big problems in skilled nursing facilities based on what the governor was saying,â Chin said. âBy the time we found out, it was too late.â
Newsom Likes To âGo Bigâ But Doesnât Always Deliver
Gavin Newsom knew it was a political gamble when, as the newly elected mayor of San Francisco, he promised to eradicate chronic homelessness.
âI recognize that Iâm setting myself up. Iâm not naive to that,â he told his hometown newspaper in 2003 as he embarked on a campaign to sell his controversial plan. It hinged on slashing welfare payments for homeless people and redirecting those funds to acquire single-room occupancy hotels, converting them into long-term housing with health and social services.
âI donât want to over-promise, but I also donât want to under-deliver,â he said.
Americans Are Going Bankrupt From Getting Sick
In April 2016, Venus Lockett was about to give a speech at an event she volunteered for near her home in Atlanta. She was already stressed. The previous night, she had stayed up late making her presentation, and then deleted it by mistake. As she stepped up to the podium to give her remarks, she noticed that her words were slurring. She tried to speak into the mic, but the words that came out didnât make sense.
A friend walked up and grabbed Lockett by the arm. A few people, noticing something wasnât right, walked Lockett to another room and called an ambulance. Lockett, who was 57 at the time and uninsured, didnât know if she could or should refuse the ambulance ride or decide which hospital it should take her to.
Paramedics sped her a few miles to Emory University Hospital Midtown, where she was held overnight. It turned out she had suffered a transient ischemic attack, or a mini-stroke. The hospital performed tests and sent her home, where she recovered fully.
In May, the hospital bill arrived. Lockett was charged $26,203.62 total for âobservation,â which the bill instructed her to pay within 20 days. Lockett went into a tailspin. âDang, I knew I shouldnât have gone to the hospital,â she remembers thinking. âBut at the same time, that was really scary to me, not being able to talk.â
Lockett was about to join the ranks of Americans who live with crippling amounts of medical debt.
Medical debt is a uniquely American phenomenon, a burden that would be unfathomable in many other developed countries. According to a survey published this month in the American Journal of Public Health, nearly 60 percent of people who have filed for bankruptcy said a medical expense âvery muchâ or âsomewhatâ contributed to their bankruptcy. That was more than the number who cited home foreclosure or student loans. (The survey respondents could choose multiple factors that contributed to their bankruptcy.)
The finding was only the latest in a long string of statistics suggesting that Americans who have faced major health scares often face significant financial setbacks afterward. A 2016 study found that a third of cancer survivors had gone into debt as a result of their medical expenses, and 3 percent had filed for bankruptcy. According to a Consumer Financial Protection Bureau study from 2014, medical bills are the most common cause of unpaid bills sent to collection agencies. About a fifth of Americans have a medical claim on their credit report, and the same proportion currently have a medical bill overdue.
âItâs just life,â says Deborah Thorne, a sociologist at the University of Idaho who co-authored the latest bankruptcy study. âItâs not like theyâve done anything wrong.â
There are as many reasons for the medical-debt crisis as there are diagnostic codes that rule the medical-billing world. In interviews, half a dozen consumer advocates told me they are concerned the problem will get worse, since the uninsured rate is going up, and more people are signing up for cheaper but skimpier health-insurance plans that have been introduced by the Trump administration. More Americans are also now on high-deductible health plans, which often require the patient to pay thousands before insurance kicks in. Networks of doctors have grown narrower, meaning more providers are likely to be out-of-network.
Emergency rooms and planned surgical procedures are the most common causes of large medical bills that patients simply canât afford to pay, advocates told me. Often, a hospital might be covered by a personâs insurance network, but the individual doctors who work there and the ambulance company that services it arenât, a situation that can lead to something called balance billing. Sometimes, bizarre loopholes kick in at the darkest moments, like the fact that a baby would be covered upon birth under Medicaid or the Childrenâs Health Insurance Program, the government insurance program for children. But a stillbirth might not be covered, says Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg, a legal director at the Legal Aid Justice Center. (Indeed, one study found that average hospital costs for stillbirths are more than $750 higher than for live births.)
In some states, hospitals are required to provide charity care to certain low-income and uninsured patients, but several advocacy groups told me that these patients sometimes get regular bills instead. âWe were seeing hospitals sending debtors to debt collections without saying anything to the debt collectors [about charity care],â says Emilia Morris, the legal director of Central California Legal Services. âThe debt collectors are trying to collect these debts without making charity care available. The patient sometimes gets sued, gets a judgment entered against them, without ever having heard of charity care.â
In a statement, an American Hospital Association spokesperson told me that in 2017, hospitals provided more than $38 billion dollars worth of care to patients who could not afford it otherwise. âHospitals across the country strive to find ways to help under- and uninsured patients navigate the health system,â the spokesperson said. âHospitals offer charity care programs, check public assistance to see if the patient qualifies and provide discounts to these patients when possible. Every day, Americaâs hospitals treat patients who can make only minimal payment, or no payment at all.â
Still, some patients do wind up with medical debt, which discourages them from seeking medical care, because they fear they will incur even more debt if they go to the doctor again. The debt can also worsen peoplesâ credit, which can make it hard for them to live healthier lives by, say, moving to better neighborhoods. In the end, they get sicker, and risk plunging even further into debt.
The $26,203 bill wasnât the last one Lockett would receive from the incident that April. A separate bill, for two doctorsâ consultations during Lockettâs hospital stay, came on April 28, for $1,301. (She provided this bill, along with the others, to The Atlantic for verification.) That amount was added to several more charges, for various x-rays and other diagnostic tests, for a new bill totaling $2,617 that arrived a month later.
Another bill, in May, came from Grady EMS, an ambulance service, for $1,807, for picking her up âfrom the scene,â as well as âmileage.â This bill encouraged her to leave her feedback in an online survey for the chance to win a $50 Kroger card. Lockett says she called the company to try to work out a deal, and a month later, Grady EMS sent her a new, reduced bill for $1,084. (Grady EMS did not respond to multiple requests for comment.)
Lockettâs attempts to negotiate with the hospital were less successful. On April 26, Lockett received a letter from Chamberlin Edmonds, a service that said it works with Emory Healthcare and claimed it could help her âfind government benefits,â such as Medicaid or Medicare, to help pay her bill. This might have led to some confusion. Lockett says she didnât have or qualify for either Medicare or Medicaid. (Georgia did not expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, leaving about a quarter-million low-income adults in a so-called âMedicaid gap.â) But she thinks her first call upon receiving the bills was not to the hospital, but to Chamberlin Edmonds, which she incorrectly assumed could help bring down the overall hospital bill. (Chamberlin Edmondsâ website no longer exists, and the company that acquired it did not respond to requests for comment.)
Since Chamberlin Edmonds was only offering to help her find government insurance, for which Lockett did not qualify, the company wasnât able to reduce her hospital bill or work out a payment plan. Lockett assumed this meant she was at a dead end with her nearly $30,000 in hospital bills. âThey were saying that there was nothing that they could do,â she told me. She decided to put the bills aside and try to get to them after she found a job.
A year later, Lockett attended a meeting with representatives of Georgia Watch, a nonprofit group, as part of her volunteer work. When one of the Georgia Watch representatives mentioned that the organization has a guide for people who wish to negotiate down their hospital bills, Lockett grabbed a copy. She called the hospital back. This time, she says, they told her her entire bill had been wiped away.
Emory Healthcare said it could not comment on individual patients, but added that âpatients will sometimes receive two bills for the same date of service: one bill for services rendered by the physician, the other for a hospital stay, supplies, services and equipment provided. Emory Healthcareâs customer service department works with patients to establish a mutually acceptable agreement for paying inpatient or outpatient bills.â
âThe reality is that medical costs are not objective, real costs,â says Berneta L. Haynes, the director of equity and access at Georgia Watch. One day, an MRI can cost $19,000. The next, it can cost nothing.
Though she was still responsible for her reduced ambulance bill, Lockett was lucky. Others arenât. Dana Peterman, a physical therapist in Forsyth, Georgia, owed more than $4,000, after insurance, when her son was rushed to the hospital with an anaphylactic peanut-allergy reaction in 2017. She tried to negotiate down her bill, but she says neither the hospital, nor the ambulance company, nor the ER doctors would give her a discount. She paid in full, not wanting the bills to affect her credit.
When negotiating with a hospital, consumer advocates I spoke with recommended asking about financial assistance, including charity care for the uninsured. If that fails, the patient can ask if they can pay whatever the hospital would have charged someone who was on Medicareâtypically a lower rate. Hospitals and even collections agencies will often agree to payment plans, or a discount in exchange for a lump-sum payment.
Still, the current system requires people to independently negotiate on their own behalf with giant corporations over tens of thousands of dollars, often while recovering from a major illness. For those who havenât done it before, the process can be confounding, as Lockett found. âMaybe I didnât say the right thing before,â Lockett told me.
If the patient fails to pay, a medical debt might be sent to a debt collector. Some patient advocates say small medical debts are now getting sold to debt buyers, companies that try to collect as much as they can on long past-due debts. âNow we are seeing small-time medical practices get involved in selling their bad debts to debt buyers for pennies on the dollar,â says Sandoval-Moshenberg, of the Legal Aid Justice Center. Rather than medical records or a patient history, these buyers rely on little more than a list of debts in a spreadsheet, making it harder, Sandoval-Moshenberg and others argue, for patients negotiate a deal or expunge an error. But this practice makes financial sense for doctors, given how many people are unable to pay their bills.
When everything fails, and the person is at imminent risk of having their wages garnished because theyâve been sued for their medical debt, it might be time to file for bankruptcy, says Sandoval-Moshenberg. The people who do become the tip of a very big debt iceberg.
