Because I still have Midst's most recent episode on the brain, it really is a little frustrating to see how characters like Jonas Spahr are so frequently maligned over a single incident and characters like Liliana Temult are so frequently given infinite excuses. I say a little frustrating because I think by and large the respective fandoms of Midst and CR do find Jonas a flawed but ultimately sympathetic and heroic character, and Liliana a person who perhaps began with good intentions but has been so warped by years in a cult that she is now openly manipulating her daughter, so this is about a relatively small group. But it is very much an extant group.

I think for me the real hangup is that the reason the Jonas Spahr archetype (of which, for those who know CR and not Midst, Fjord is not quite the same but similar enough for this particular example; this post is definitely about him as well) receives criticism for being harsh towards, for lack of a better term, a wetter and sadder cat of a character. And how is that different from Liliana, who is at the very least staging a public shaming of her daughter? For all their methods, and for all their personal history, characters like Fjord and Spahr have never been terribly manipulative towards the sympathetic protagonists, just openly angry. And when they've been angry, it's always come out that they are consciously holding back from what was visited on them.

But Liliana. Liliana isn't trying to shield Imogen. She says she is, but she continues long after it stops working. She won't listen to the daughter she says she's doing this for; she treats a grown woman like the toddler she abandoned. I don't think Liliana means "did she know there were children in this music hall" because she told Imogen that last episode. She invoked that there were children here to try to excuse her own behavior. She knows Imogen knows about that. This is about the assassination attempt. She wants to know if her daughter knew this was coming. And the answer is that Imogen did, and she tried to stop Liliana, and she tried even to advocate for a more measured attempt with a group for which she lacked the built-up good will. Unlike Liliana leaning on her ultimately useless showy warnings and claiming she does this all for a greater good, Imogen didn't try to curry favor with her mother (nor should she have to; Liliana's the one who left). I doubt Liliana would have taken kindly to being captured, but Imogen still tried and didn't try to score points with her mother for it.

The response to Liliana when juxtaposed with the response to Spahr does feel like this trend, again of a small subset of people but certainly a subset often unaware of how to act reasonably online, that craves the most basic subversion and simultaneously fears and hates conviction in those characters who are not part of this childish "what if the BAD GUYS were RIGHT" group. Specifically they hate an individual conviction that allows one to break out of a larger ideology - one that Spahr has and Liliana clearly lacks.

I'll admit this is really more an observation - I don't have a thesis statement or true conclusion, at least not one I'm going to share widely - but it still sits so strangely that people will hate characters for a single harsh word to their favorite and then try to brush away the decades of harm Liliana has, ultimately, visited on Imogen. Did the word "Run" ever comfort her? It certainly didn't work. Did Liliana ever answer a direct question? At some point, when you're dealing with a fully functioning adult, you can't just say "I'm doing this for you" without their input and be taken seriously and yet Liliana does, repeatedly. At least with Spahr I believed the people who disliked him liked Phineas, but here, I don't think the people defending her care that much for Imogen except as Liliana does - a sweetly misguided morality pet whom they're doing this all for, hush, don't interrupt my noble sacrifice for you with your actual needs and wants. It feels like the campaign-long denial, within some of the fandom, of Imogen's agency, down to how people talk carefully around how the reason Bells Hells wasn't at the assassination is because Imogen chose not to be (and told the others they could not go either, and they respected this). I think we're reaching a point where those who have been so scornful of leadership are fighting against the fact that that is how Imogen is positioned: as leader and as a hero. Ironically, as we've learned from how they treat characters like Spahr, there's nothing they hate more than that.

honestly i think a HUGE part of the issue is that most of the left doesn't really understand antisemitism

after wwii it became wildly Unpopular to be blatantly antisemitic. obviously, it still happened. but the result of this is that instead of antisemitism being studied as a historical and pervasive form of oppression that has been around for thousands of years & has many many precedents BEFORE the holocaust.... it became:

something just simply Rude to say or do. if you're a polite liberal/conservative or a leftist, it's just something that is socially unacceptable. there is no real weight to this.

something when FIRMLY believed is ONLY held by people like nazis and white supremacists. who, as we know, are The Enemy and none of us can ever be like them at all ever by the virtue of... not being them. no need to watch your own behaviors, bc you are not a nazi! only nazis could ever be Actually antisemitic

something that erupted out of the ground in germany in the early 20th century, culminated with the holocaust, and ended after. antisemitism did not exist before that and it was solved after when the saving grace of the united states and england liberated the jews from the nazis out of the goodness of their hearts

however absolutely none of this is true. antisemitism stretches back thousands of years and it has not, for the most part, been only "fringe" conspiracy theorists and white supremacists who perpetuate it

antisemitism has been, by and large, presented as very logical. throughout, again, the thousands of years of history of antisemitism, very regular people have been antisemites. and most of them had reasons they felt were perfectly logical and understandable and most of all just. jews were trying to kill their children, of course they hated them! jews were purposefully trying to keep them poor, of course they hated them! jews believed Wrong Things and were morally and spiritually corrupt, of course there was something wrong with them. jews betrayed their country, lost them a war that ended with their husbands and brothers and sons dead, and now were living among them and taking advantage of social benefits out of the goodness of the hearts of the german people, of COURSE they hated them! and the nazis themselves were backed up by science at the time. scientific racism was THE science at the time. charles darwin was a scientific racist. it was all very logical.

and did jews actually do these things? no. but these people saw enough proof that aligned well enough with their morals and their beliefs and their fears & so to them it was completely logical and justified. it wasn't a fringe theory that only an insane person would believe in, or something impolite. it was true to them. to their morals, to their fears, to their core beliefs. it was true.

and so now we see a LOT. a lot of leftists being dragged ass first into antisemitism. because they don't even think they CAN be antisemitic. THEY aren't nazis and THEY aren't white supremacists, of COURSE they aren't antisemitic. but... well. the jews are doing things that go against their morals. they're doing things that validate their fears. the jews are violating things that go against their core beliefs! so of COURSE it is LOGICAL that they should hate them. of course, it is still rude to say "the jews are evil" so it gets replaced with "zionist". (and before you ask yes i am anti-zionism and do deeply believe what israel is doing is unjust and cruel) but even that is slipping.

it is getting all the more popular to go that one step further and instead of just making posts like "spam the hanukkah tag because the Zionists need to learn what their religion stands for" that are blatantly just replacing "jews" with "zionists", they are logically moving to being mask off. if zionism is wrong and half the world's remaining jewish population lives in israel, what about the rest? aren't they suspect? would they not ALL commit atrocities if given the chance? aren't they all racist for believing they're an ethnicity? aren't they all complicit? aren't they all threatening our deeply held leftist beliefs? it's a little weird and everyone has been too quiet for too long bc it's been rude to say but now you can get 300k notes for posting blood libel so why would you keep quiet anymore?

why WOULDN'T you just say "thank god someone finally said it i was worried about stepping on toes" when someone makes a post full of antisemitic conspiracy theory. why WOULDN'T you say "i don't care if all of israel gets bombed and every single person dies after this lmfao they deserve it"? Streamer!Scaramouche AU

i feel like he’d be one of the biggest streamers on his platform- probably one of those that everyone has heard of even if they’re not into watching livestreams and all

but between those who do know who he is, they either love him or hate him. no in-between

it’s kind of understandable because his attitude is not suited/can be handled by anyone

he’s brutally honest even when his opinion may be seen as rude (to him he’s just saying the truth so he doesn’t mind if people get offended)

of course he doesn’t try to be rude on purpose but i mean it as in he’ll say what he thinks

imagine he’s playing a game and he doesn’t like a certain mechanic, or he isn’t enjoying the story;

he won’t say the game is bad but he’ll openly say he doesn’t like it/it’s not for him. it makes him seem strict but tbh he’s not that hard to please and even when he complains about one or two things he still enjoys the game

he usually gives every game a chance even when from what he’s seen it doesn’t sound like a game he’ll like. if he turns out to be right he just won’t play it again and if he’s wrong he’s a little too prideful to admit he spoke a little too fast but in the end he will admit the game is good or he’s having fun

probably the kind that just knows so much about all games and all the creators and all the game-making engines and is up to date with every single news of everything video-game + streaming-related,,, how does he do it, i don’t know,,,,

and also since he’s so popular he probably gets packages from game developers with limited edition stuff or merch from different games soooo often

and he placed the ones from his favorite games in his setup room and it looks INCREDIBLE he has so much stuff

he did a room tour stream once talking about all he has, where he got everything, from his monitor to every complement of his computer and like,,,,, the cost of his setup,,,,,,, some people already know they’ll never be able to afford that in their entire life

and he already had a great setup before he even became big as a streamer so people can already guess he’s fairly rich 

also i feel like he would have started his career as a streamer without using a facecam and even like that, he already managed to get very popular because of his professional commentary of game dynamics/playability + you can tell that he’s passionate about this and also he’s very funny without even trying??

he says some stuff so casually that he doesn’t realise how funny it is

probs showed his face after he hit a very important milestone

he never considered showing his face that important but he understood why people would want to see his reactions when playing games (even tho he warned them he’s not the most expressive/dramatique person in the world and they know by now) and would want to put a face to the person who entertains them so much with his streams

and when he does show his face people go absolutely cRAZY BECAUSE he is crazy good looking (if you don’t think he’s good looking i’m sorry for your eyesight. jk i’m sorry in general i just really love him)

some people who didn’t watch his streams will even check them out because of that but literally if you come for the visuals only you won’t stay for long because as i said not anyone can handle his personality

if he sees people being superficial about him too much instead of paying attention to what’s happening in the stream, he will immediately turn the subs mode on in the chat (if he didn’t have it on already)

being rude, being disrespectful/saying discriminating stuff or anything of that sort won’t be tolerated and anyone who does it will be banned instantly

without even interrupting what he was saying before he saw the comment, he’ll just type the ban to whoever said that and go on

and his mods do the exact same. they are just as strict as him

if it ever got too much of course he wouldn’t be afraid to speak up about it and tell his chat to stop that behaviour or else, as they should already know, he won’t be afraid of banning them even if they’ve been subscribed for months or years

why do i feel like he has a super organised chat— as in instead of spamming 5 emotes per comment they all send just one and it looks so tidy and perfect

literally other streamers would be jealous of how not-messy his chat is even when he has thousands and thousands and thousands of viewers all the time

also i have this idea that maybe any of his fans would have designed him as a genshin character (which would be the design of the scaramouche we know (?))

and the little pop-ups (i don’t know the name in english rIP) thingies that show up to notify when someone subscribed or donated would be lil chibi art of that design

it’d be really cool

and since i also doodled what a stream of his could look like (i’ll show it in the future when i’m done!!) i thought that way it’d be more recognisable that the streamer is scaramouche

99% of the people who have seen him irl found him too intimidating to go ask him for a picture or tell him anything

he’s not a huge fan of taking pictures anyway + is more on the introverted/reserved side but he wouldn’t mind if someone went up to him (if he’s not busy with something) to tell him something or say they enjoy his streams

i feel like in a couple occasions he would have played a game with some subscribers and he’d like to tease them speaking with his usual tone and face (in case they’re watching the stream as they talk) so they think he’s serious

“did you watch my 12 hour stream the other day?”  -scaramouche

“ah,,,, i-” -the sub

“think well of what you’re going to answer.” -scaramouche

“i-i couldn’t watch the whole thing,,,” -the sub

he’ll pretend to sound disappointed but at one point he just can’t help but smirk and hold in a chuckle before telling them he’s not serious

(he literally doesn’t know how the hell he survived that stream himself because he isn’t one to stream for that long)

i feel like deep inside people who know him would know he wouldn’t say such things seriously/wouldn’t be disappointed in anyone for not watching every single minute of his streams or not even all his streams

but he says all that so seriously that it’s,,, intimidating and they’re lowkey like “god but what if he’s not joking-”

he’d play games with the other streamers sometimes but i feel like most of the type he’d play more single-player games

it’d be so funny if he plays among us with others and for example one of those others it’s childe

both of them would always be suspecting of the other first/bickering, especially scaramouche

and if one game turns out they’re both the impostors… people would know right away

like, if any of them tried to defend the other, everyone else would be like “!?! what is this? scaramouche and childe defending each other? scary”

they’d vote one of them (maybe scaramouche) out because they started guessing + saying proof of how both of them could be the impostors (but the biggest proof is them not coming for each other’s throats sNKJFNGKJS)

scaramouche would have to resist the urge to S C R E A M

needless to say he doesn’t like when he has to be impostor with childe

and unfortunately for him, fate makes it happen considerably often

i feel like at least one time scaramouche would kill next to childe and then report it and literally blame childe

and childe would be like ?!?!?!?!?? WHAT- NO- (struggles bc his brain instinct is to say ‘it was you!’ but they’re both the impostors??? how-)

and then they’d eject childe,,, and then people wouldn’t suspect of scaramouche for most of the game because ? why would he- blame his partner---

well he did it with no regrets and at the end when they all found out they found it very funny (except for childe, but even he ended up laughing in the end because what a mean strategy sjkfhdsgkj)

i have this feeling that even though they bicker so much and for any strangers it’d seem like they hate each other, when scaramouche does play online games, many times it’d be with childe?

ik they aren’t supposed to get along but for the sake of it being a modern au i don’t want bad vibes between any of the characters pls-

and everyone enjoys their dynamic and those streams always get a ton of viewers sjfhdsgkj and i’m sure both their chats would be good friends (most likely one’s fans would also be a fan of the other too)

very very very rarely (because he prefers just playing and talking while playing) he’d do streams where he doesn’t play anything but just talks with the chat, watches videos that they send him, looks at the fanart they make, just talks about games,,,,

it’d be super chill and the perfect streams for people to be doing homework/work/play games/draw or do basically anything while they listen to his stream in the background

he’d also be answering some of people’s questions about him or about his favorite games, or if he’s playing this new game that came out earlier this week,,,

“will you play ‘it takes two’ with childe?” -someone in the chat

“absolutely not. i won’t play a co-op game with him”

not even 5 days later, tweet from childe saying “streaming in 30 minutes! Scaramouche and I will be playing It Takes Two on my ch---”

anyways this will be all!! (for now?) i obviously knew genshin before this but, yesterday i could finally start playing it myself! so i feel like if not now, soon i will also write headcanons of him playing genshin! i don’t take requests but if you guys have any ideas or anything you want to say about this AU, send me an ask!! i’d love to talk about this and about genshin in general!

Now to answer the things you’ve mentioned in these asks:

I don’t necessarily think mermaids are naive/gullible in general, but Luffy definitely is, both in canon and in this AU, and yup, as you’ve pointed out, she’s a much more attractive target due to being 1) a girl, 2) a mer. I thought it’d be an interesting combo!

Altho, lemme be honest with you here: that isn’t the main reason why Lu’s a girl in this AU. The main reason is simply because I suddenly wanted to draw Boobs, and realized that in all my many past fandoms, I very rarely draw boobs. I think ladies are awesome, just my fav charas/ships tend to focus on guys, so not much opportunity ^ ^; So I thought it’d just be fun to give myself an excuse to practice, ye know? And the only reason why everyone else isn’t also genderbent so it’s ladies everywhere, is bc well, I still really enjoy drawing muscley dudes too ^ ^; I apologize if it seems a bit “het” (tho tbh, Luffy doesn’t really read as particularly gendered to me either way), but really I just wanted to draw both boobs and moobs if that makes sense >.>;;; it ain’t that deep lmao

The ENTIRE crew is hyper protective, this AU’s defs got a lotta Everyone Loving Lu! It’s defs ASL and specifically AceLu centric especially at first, and yes he’s very protective and has every reason to be ^ ^; Sabo will also definitely be HYPER overprotective (especially given the situation he finds her in...), and the rest of the crew gets increasingly protective too. The original straw hats (yes they’re all eventually recruited) obviously so, but I’m also really excited to think about the potential of Thatch and Deuce in the crew. I’ve already shared some long rambly thoughts on Patreon, hoping they can make it to comic form one day haha!

Shanks absolutely did not know that Luffy’s a girl, and Mihawk absolutely figures it out, and casually lets slip when he visits. Let’s say that Shanks being shocked is an understatement (and wouldn’t it be hilarious if Ben already suspected but decided not to say anything), and may or may not have tried to immediately go see for himself......

Closing in on the end now!! I’m excited but nervous for this to end bc I honestly don’t know what I’ll do with my time next. Most of my free time has been dedicated to this fic so I’m going to be looking for new ideas here soon. Hope y’all enjoy and buckle up cause this chapter is a long one!

Watching Ainsley back on the newscast is a welcome normal to Jessica’s monotonous day. With Malcolm and Gil throwing themselves into investigating officers, she was put essentially on complete lockdown in Gil’s apartment. With Dani and JT cycling as her watchers, they feel more comfortable leaving. It’s irritating but the way Malcolm relaxes, knowing she’s safe. She does it for him.

“The search for the Needle’s Eye continues,” Ainsley rattles off, eyes disconnected from the words. It’s a tactic Jessica admired and feared when she was able to talk about such horrific things when not letting them in at all. Once on camera her face would clear, a determined one carrying over. “The officers in charge of the case are investigating a possible lead into Beverly Construction, where a body has been discovered. Police believe the man, identified to be Jason Carter, is one of the killers.” Ainsley stops, suddenly getting a far off look. Jessica knows she’s listening to someone in her ear. From the emotions that flash over her face in that split second she already knows what comes next. First is the bitter anger, then curiosity that blossoms into interest, all before she schools her face again. “Hold on a second, we have Dr. Martin Whitly, otherwise known as the surgeon dialing in. Dr. Whitly has provided insight into multiple investigations so it will be interesting to see what he makes of this new killer on the scene.”

Jessica braces herself for the impact that his voice will bring. It doesn’t help. Not for what happens next.

“He’s coming.” The voice on the other end of the call sends ice down her spine. It’s gruff, far from the animated speech of Martin. Ainsley’s face pales on the screen. She knows just as well as Jessica who is on the other side of this call.

“Who is this?” She tries to ask in her best investigative tone but the tremor shakes. It’s the first time she’s even seen her phased. Jessica must have made some kind of noise, deep from the back of her throat because the door opens behind her.

“Mrs. Whitly?” Dani stops in the doorway, eyes falling on the television.

“You brood of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak what is good?”

“Is that?” A few more steps and Dani is beside the couch, her phone in her hand frantically texting.

“Who is this?” Ainsley asks again, firmer.

“Do you know where your son is?” Just like that the floor goes out from under her feet. The call ends abruptly with Ainsley staring at the camera in horror and fury. The blonde curls bounce when she snaps her head around to someone off screen and the channel cuts to commercials.

“Mrs. Whitly.” Dani whispers, like she’s ready approaching an active bomb. Jessica’s heart thuds too quickly in her chest and they both jump when her phone begins ringing.

Claremont Psychiatric, the screen reads. Before Dani can make a move for it Jessica answers. She swallows, ready to do anything the person on the other line tells her. Anything to protect her son. He doesn’t deserve to face what she had. He’d been through more than enough.

“Jessie.” Martin’s voice calls out from the line, tense and thin. He begins rattling but she can’t hear him over the static filling her mind. All the words he spits out at rapid speed don’t even reach her as she stares blankly at the TV. Only one thought comes to her, so lost among the white noise.

He sounds terrified.

Dani clutches the wheel tight in her grip, eyes casting to Mrs. Whitly. The silence in the car is a far too familiar one. Picking up the Whitlys when something terrible happens to Malcolm seems like it’s a part of her job description. Normally it’s Ainsley who fills the quiet with the unending questions one would expect from a journalist.

This is heavy, oppressive. She can see Mrs. Whitly pulling the bag closer to her with every turn of the car.

She doesn’t blame the anxiety. They’re on their way to Claremont. The Surgeon made her own skin crawl the first time she met him. But Claremont employees were the last ones to see Malcolm, according to the calls. She needs to talk to Dr. Whitly, he could have seen something. If Malcolm was nervous before, had he known he was being followed, anything. She almost feels sorry for her watching dread turn her face pale.

But something doesn’t feel right.

Her suspicions are confirmed the second her ringtone blares again. To Mrs. Whitly’s credit, she doesn’t immediately reach for her phone to answer it again. Rather, she looks to Dani after she reads the number holding it to her.

It’s marked as unknown, but in their area. It could just be a spam caller, but something tells Dani the Whitly’s don’t really have that problem. When you have enough money you can make the small nuisances of life disappear.

“Put it on speaker.” She tells Jessica, only diverting her eyes from the road for a second to make sure she understands. “We’re tracking the calls on both your phone and Ainsley’s. Keep him talking. If we can get a location pinned on him, we’ll be able to find Malcolm.” She nods, swallowing. 

The line crackles to life with a monotonous threat. “8640 Westshire Avenue. Come alone.” The call ends and Dani can see Mrs. Whitly’s hands shaking. Her mind flashes to Malcolm and she switches lanes. Abandoning the path to Claremont she speeds up towards the address. Westshire Avenue is a line of mostly abandoned warehouses, they’ve gotten calls there more than a few times. It doesn’t make her feel good about Malcolm’s chances. It’s remote. Quiet.

And the way Mrs. Whitly holds herself sitting a little too straight, she knows exactly where they’re going too. Her eyes fall to her lap, her hands white knuckled on the bag again. She recognizes the grip, having seen it too many times in suspects weighing their chances.

“What’s in the purse?” Dani asks slowly. She dreads the question but the way that she guards it, being extra careful that it doesn’t tip or shuffle. She knows. Out the corner of her eye she watches her flinch. She feigns innocence, not well. “How’d you get it?” She thinks for a moment, and the realization settles. “Malcolm.” It makes sense. They know she has a registered firearm. Malcolm would have grabbed it the night he and Edrisa went to pack her things. Extra protection. He wouldn’t take the chance if something went wrong with her or JT. That’s why he was more willing to leave back to the precinct without taking her with them. Knowing that she can protect herself would put him at ease.

He should have told them.

She pulls the car over turning to her. “What are you doing?”

“Give me the gun.” Dani holds a hand out but Jessica’s cover her purse. She tilts her head with a sigh. “Please. It doesn’t have to be like this.”

“Doesn’t it.” She straightens, a furious look shining in the dim light. “He took my son. Malcolm had nothing to do with this.”

“Neither did you.”

“But it had all to do with Martin.” She shakes her head not meeting her gaze. Dani knows she’s blinking away the tears. “I should have gotten it over with when I had the chance.” Dani’s head tilts, eyes widening for a split second. It was a small confession but one that set off so many alarms in her head. She almost asks what she means by that when she remembers.

The surgeon had been stabbed, supposedly by the woman across from her to protect an innocent’s life.

Looking at her now, Dani knows that isn’t what happened.

“I could turn this car around. Take you back to the station.” She threatens.

“You won’t.” The woman’s voice wavers with uncertainty. “Malcolm, he’s your friend. You won’t take that risk.” Dani runs her tongue along the back of her teeth, setting her jaw with determination. They are running out of time. “If Gil hadn’t seen the news, if he didn’t know. You’re telling me you wouldn’t run in as soon as you got there to save my son?”

She can’t answer that. Not truthfully, at least. She has, a dozen times, run after Malcolm. Running the numbers in her head. Calculating every single risk to grab his ass after he’s rushed in. She’s seen his anger, his panic, the desperation unfurling at every scene.

A needle full of poison, his hands pressed on a landmine, an axe raised high above his head with a wild look. Ready to do whatever it took.

Staring at the woman across from her it pains Dani to know she ever thought he got that from his dad. Not when Jessica’s eyes shine with the same bitterness towards the world who has kicked them a few times too many. Her voice draws, a deep rumble in her chest. “I’ve been married to a serial killer, dated another who stabbed maybe the only person who gave a damn about my children, I’ve pushed my daughter into a window to stop her from being hit by an axe. I’ve done everything in my power to protect them.”

“Will this protect him?” She sucks in a breath. “His dad is already a killer, Ainsley’s self defense plea almost ripped him apart and this? He will blame himself.”

“He can’t.”

“But he will. He will think about every single thing he could’ve done differently. To stop you from losing a part of yourself. Gil too.” 

“He has Ainsley, Gil, Edrisa, his team. He will be fine.”

“But he needs you.” Dani’s throat constricts emotion threatening to betray her. “He needs his mom.” That must get to her because her face begins to twitch. Her anger falls away to what truly lies beneath the surface, fear and grief. She lets go of the bag and Dani reaches inside securing the firearm.

The silence lapses again as they start back down the road. It’s different, less foreboding and more solemn. It takes a few minutes before Jessica speaks. “How do you get past this?” She casts a quick look over but she’s staring out the window, eyes not seeing the scenery flying past them. “You’ve seen dozens of horrors. The gruesome things we do to each other. How do you do it?”

Her hands grip the wheel tighter. “You don’t. Every case takes something. Some take more than others but they all do. I’ve tried shutting it down, leaving everything at work. But it doesn’t help.”

“No kidding.” She laughs bitterly.

“You have people. They push you past it.” Jessica looks to her, eyebrows furrowed. “Going at it alone, it’s too much. When you have people that care for you,” She sighs. “Well, it’s easier to do it when you’re doing it for someone else.”

“I did.” Her voice is thick, Dani looks away pretending not to see the tear that slides down her cheek. “I got out for them.”

A few more beats pass. She taps an even rhythm as she realizes they’re creeping closer to their destination. She should text Gil. “Find something that grounds you.”

“What does that even mean?” She swipes at her face looking away again. She needs to calm her down before she makes the connection herself.

“You pick something that keeps you here. And when everything feels like too much you think of that.”

“Like what?”

“A person, a memory-”

“A dream?”

“Yeah, I guess that could work.” Her eyes focus on the street signs, watching carefully for her next turn. “You find what you’re looking for, it stops. It keeps you from falling into your emotions. It’s a lot harder to be angry when you’re thinking about it.”

“And this is a memory for you? Isn’t it a little counterintuitive to move forwards when looking back?”

“Aren’t we all looking back?”

“No.” Dani’s eyes jump to her, clearly having struck a nerve. She curses herself in realization. Her happiness was also her greatest downfall. The person she loved was her ruin. No wonder she doesn’t want to look back on that. “You said a dream, you mind if I ask?”

“The first night when I was taken. I dreamt of Christmas, this year. Having my family all together. No cases, no Martin lingering in our minds. Gil put on music and we danced.” She sighs, shaking her head. “Truth be told, I don’t remember the last time I danced. It felt…”

“Like healing.”

Her eyes shine with tears, her voice barely a whisper. “I suppose so.”

The turn into the warehouse brings the foreboding feeling back tenfold. Jessica’s anxiety settles in her stomach because they have no idea what they will find inside. Honestly, they don’t even truly know if he’s the only one left. There could be another partner. Malcolm could be hurt, he might need an ambulance.

Dani’s face firms when she looks at her phone. She knows what that look means in a second.

She can’t call for backup. They’re alone on this.

She parks the car gathering all she needs. “Stay here.” It’s more of a command than anything as she steps out. “I’m going to look for a payphone. He had to have used one to call you.” She disappears in the other direction, only her shadow from the overhead lights showing where she went from Jessica’s limited view.

Her eyes fall back on the door. The metal looms before her and she knows in her gut that this isn’t a trick. Her son is inside, alone and scared. God, he could be hurt and bleeding for all she knows. She wishes for only a moment that she didn’t give the gun over, that she could just end this without feeling the slightest bit of remorse.

She could still end this.

Her head whips back to where Dani went. It wouldn’t take long for her to find something to call Gil. She had to move quickly and quietly. She climbs from the car, the detective’s voice still ringing in her mind. He needs you. She’s absolutely certain this isn’t what she meant but she’s right regardless.

The metal door slides noisily and she knows she’s lost. The second she steps in she could be killed. But she pictures her little boy, slumped from being stabbed with his hand held close to his chest having smashed it to save her and his sister. The smell of blood and dirt from the memory washes over her harshly.

She pushes herself inside.

I hope the rmd mc for kasumi is a bit different cuz she rly be hittin on my last nerve and I don’t think she would rly v✨i✨b✨e with kasumi in her current given state

i’ve decided i need to play matsunaga and cc before getting a better sense of the eicu guys but honestly some of these recent asks feel like my own brain jumped out of my head and started sending me anon asks lmao bc i totally agree. anyway i know it’s a controversial opinion to not like the rmd mc and i’m TRYING to be fair and put aside my bias against her and try to analyse what exactly it is that i don’t like, but yeah i just don’t really find that she has romantic chemistry with the characters (that i’ve read, i.e. takado and hosho). not that anyone ever asked for this, buuuuuut this ask has basically triggered yet another mc rant so stop reading here or get ready and settle down with some popcorn lmao.

DISCLAIMER: this is all just my personal opinion! and i’m sure many of you will disagree with me. please place a “i think/believe/feel” before every claim i make as everything i say here is just my own feeling towards her. i also need to disclaim that i have only properly read takado and hosho’s routes (bc i’m still...mad at sen’s route, and i’ve only made it through one chapter of matsunaga so far) and i understand (and fully subscribe to) the idea that mcs read differently depending on the route as well. and as always, please don’t let my opinions affect your own enjoyment of any characters or titles that you love!

ALSO as i was writing this, i went back and read my previous rant about her and i realised that i’m more or less reiterating the same points i made there but in a (hopefully) more structured and slightly more developed manner whoops. 

so here’s almost 3000 words and a whole bunch of screenshots under the cut because i don’t want to spam everyone’s dashboards with my unprompted Opinions(tm).

so anyway i’ve been thinking it’s a translation/tone thing. when i have the time/energy, i might sit down and really try to analyse the actual language, but just going off my intuition, i think maybe it’s because:

1. sometimes they choose to express something idiomatically and so that tone doesn’t come across as sincere. this isn’t a real example, but let’s think about the difference in tone between “oh no!” and “yikes”. because of modern day vernacular, we kind of associate “yikes” with a sarcastic and judgmental tone, whereas “oh no!” might connote a more genuinely concerned reaction. so sometimes i think that the use of very contemporary vernacular (which, lbr, trends towards a more sarcastic tone in general bc us gen z kids are mean) results in a lack of sincerity which makes the mc come across as a little more callous and less... actually kind and nice? i did get the feeling that hlitf mc has recently swayed towards this sort of tone as well and suspected that they had the same translator (which was confirmed later in a voltage Q&A). i’m definitely #biased but i can forgive this more because we had a good amount of content with her being adorable before the tone switch so i have a pre-established impression of her in my mind. 

by the way, i just want to say that while i do have this critique, i do really admire and respect the voltage translation and localisation team (and am... super indebted to them) and i do think they do fantastic translations generally. 

anyway, i believe this linguistic issue is at least partially responsible for my personal perception of the rmd mc’s personality that i expand on in the succeeding points, but my next point has more to do with the writing and characterisation of the most recent wave of mcs.

2. rmd mc has very few visible vulnerabilities. i think this is one of my biggest qualms with the new title mcs like rmd, destind and mk but i think stories are at their best when you get to see the mc fail and be vulnerable and wallow. the reason why i love certain mcs - particularly the ones whose titles and storylines centre around their careers (hlitf, irresistible mistakes, my last first kiss, scandal, celebrity darling, kiss of revenge, sleepless, otbs, arguably msb, etc.) - is because we get to see them fail and then grow. not only that, but you often get to see the relationship between the mc and the love interest deepen in these moments. but if you have a ‘perfect’ mc, then there’s no room for growth, so plotlines are forced to fall back on drama and trauma on the love interest’s side which... is exactly what rmd and mk do. 

this is not to say that rmd mc doesn’t make mistakes, because she certainly does, but i don’t find that they’re ever genuinely serious mistakes. for example, think about hlitf mc’s repeated mistake in season 1 of going after small crimes without seeing the bigger picture and thus potentially messing up an entire investigation. they allow her that space to mess up and be completely wrong for public safety. then they give her the time to be self-reflective and run away back to nagano really think about what her mistakes are, and where to go from there. she is confronted with humbling failure, and is forced to address issues about her own pride/ego, and matures into someone who has a more nuanced idea about justice. on the other hand, rmd mc never has to (consistently, afaik) go through a genuinely humbling experience, so she her pride/ego/arrogance never gets seriously called into question. maybe this is because the premise of rmd has to do with life and death and they don’t want to make it seem like she’s directly responsible for someone’s death, but hlitf also deals with life and death issues and the mc learns that if she messes up to save one civilian, she may actually be jeopardising the lives of tens or hundreds or more. 

anyway, taking takado’s route as an example, because this was our exposure to her as a character, the most frustrating thing is the way that she tries to lecture takado that he’s wrong about his attitude towards amputations, and never actually has to personally experience the potentially disastrous consequence of putting her ideology into practice. i think i would have enjoyed the route a lot more if she had gone over his head and naively made the decision not to do an amputation and then the person ended up dying or having to have a larger section amputated all because she was like uwu we can’t just cut off people’s limbs without waiting. i think if that situation had happened, we could have seen her actually have to confront her own naiveté and realise that she’s a noob and too idealistic and that reading a lot of medical journals does not translate to having actual field experience and intuition and who is she to question him like that when she knows nothing. she only realises that omg... we may have to consider some things with something called nuance... basically when more of takado’s backstory is revealed.  

(maybe this is because i work in academia so it extra-frustrates me, but omg if i had to one-on-one mentor a student like her, i would genuinely go nuts. she reminds me of some students that some colleagues and i have had where they  “well, actually” at everything you say bc they read some stuff on reddit or twitter that has absolutely not been proven through practical application of, or research conducted through the lens of, their theory. like imagine i told my advisors “despite being experts in [their respective fields] and having written numerous very important books, you’re wrong because i don’t agree but i have never myself conducted proper research to counter that!!”)

basically i wish they treated takado’s route like kaga’s routes (bc lbr takado and kaga are maybe... the same person?). look at the self-reflection here:

she does get down on herself at times, but look at the way that she humbly accepts her mistakes. sometimes she wallows on her mistakes, as anyone would, but look at the way she examines her failures and turns that feeling of inadequacy into motivation to work harder and smarter. 

by the way, these screenshots are from his ms1 and ms2 - so pretty early on - and we get to see her learn from these mistakes because she’s allowed to make them. we also get to learn more about kaga’s strictness and his kindness because of these mistakes.

i don’t know if the whole refusal to allow rmd mc to make significant errors is a response to readers who are like “omg.... why are voltage mcs so weak, why can’t they be perfect women who never get anything wrong” but ANYWAY i just feel like they never confront or address her hubris properly. 

3. following on from point 2, i find her one-dimensional. i’ve mentioned this before in a rant, but i don’t find her to be a very deep character bc to me, she reads as mostly surface level sass. i said: “her dialogue with them often reads as like they put 100 points in “snark” and 0 points in any other personality trait” lmao. so she’s great in one-off screenshots where you can see her bite back with a very screenshottable one-liner, but i find it tiring to have 30 chapters of her just literally running her mouth. because of this constant tone that they keep giving her, i find it really difficult to see any emotional depth in her character. because she’s the perspective character, her internal dialogue is just as, if not more, important as the love interest’s external dialogue in terms of carrying the emotional weight of falling in love, and i just don’t understand how there’s any sense of two people falling in love and getting to know each other when every sentence out of her mouth is just sass. can you imagine you meet someone and you get to know them but never have any genuine conversations bc every line out of your mouth is sarcastic? like your date is opening up and telling you about some difficulties he’s going through (which i’m sure you all know is a very vulnerable and scary thing to do) and instead of being empathetic and kind and understanding, you’re just like “sucks to be you dude”. and instead of saying “you don’t need to carry everything on your shoulders”, you say “you’re STUBBORN and i’m RIGHT”. OF COURSE i’m being kind of hyperbolic here (not even that much tho, see screenshots below) but that’s basically the tone she constantly takes. 

so when takado opens up about the rina thing, instead of being like “oh shit i’ve been judging him all this time and i’m genuinely sorry because i didn’t know a thing about you and yet i’ve been running my mouth”, she says “your head is as hard as a rock ya know?” and then KEEPS GOING. 

where’s the empathy sis? where is it? i’m looking but i can’t find it.

EVEN TAKADO WAS LIKE “I WAS TRYING TO TALK SERIOUSLY ABOUT IT”

and then the writers just push off her rudeness as like “it’s okay it’s chill!! takado laughed about it afterwards and it made the issue sound insignificant!!” even tho it’s obviously an extremely traumatic thing? WHY does he even fall in love with her??? i don’t UNDERSTAND alsdkfjs she has NO FEELINGS!! i just want genuinely romantic moments... is that too much to ask... it’s called romance md...

once again, let’s compare that to hlitf mc, when she finds out about kaga’s trauma. literally the FIRST reaction she has is to consider his feelings.

without even hearing his side of the story, she defends him because she trusts him and immediately empathises with him and the first thing she does is try to understand him and where he’s coming from. 

later on, when she hears him just dismissing things and playing callous, she actually cries on his behalf, which shocks him because he’s not used to people caring about him:

isn’t that a MASSIVE difference in reaction to essentially the same character opening up about their trauma? which do you find more conducive to developing emotional intimacy? in my opinion, it’s so much easier to fall in love with someone who supports you and has your back and trusts and believes in you and tries to understand you and can have a genuinely caring conversation with you when you need it. by the way, it’s not like kaga’s mc doesn’t sass him either! they have great bantery chemistry and she shit-talks him ALL THE TIME (a lot of the time under her breath and he’s like HUH? it’s great). 

and yet... we still actively see her caring about him... instead of being like WHOOPS my tongue slipped, i can’t help that i’m naturally insubordinate ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

by the way, i’m not trying to put the onus on female characters/heroines to be caring/empathetic/kind/loving. i’m putting the onus on ALL characters to be caring/empathetic/kind/loving in their own ways if we’re supposed to be convinced that they’re falling in romantic love. sure, kaga’s mc is exceptionally loving but kaga returns that love with his own ALL the time ;~~; anyway i’m gonna stop talking about them for now bc otherwise i would just completely derail and keep going on and on about them. 

anyway, back to takado, i actually find him to be more caring and loving than his mc? i actually genuinely like takado as a character and i think that real life me and him would be great together so i’m like extra offended that he’s with her rather than ME??? i would treat him so much better. 

i consider this lack of emotional depth to actually be a bigger hindrance on my enjoyment of the game than the lack of flaws thing. voltage’s recent wave of mcs with the love choice titles have been trending towards the ‘perfect woman’ type of mc, but while i have some Thoughts(tm) here and there about the other protagonists, none of them strike me as being as hard to get along with as rmd’s mc. so i’ve mentioned my issue with the masukisu mc’s weird moral boundaries (more an overall voltage issue that manifests the most strongly in her character), but i also do find that they don’t let her make big mistakes and they present her as this perfect superwoman figure with no weaknesses which like... unrelatable. but at least her banter is flirty banter and there’s a lot of chemistry there (even if it’s sometimes lacking emotional depth, as in some of kazuomi’s scenes - and that’s not her fault, that’s 100% on kazuomi lol). you can definitely understand why they’re attracted to each other at least, and you can definitely see real, deep love form between her and yuzuru the most. even though the masukisu mc is a ‘perfect woman’, the premise is designed to spark relationship conflict and the writing really helps us understand the emotional turmoil of falling in love with a target because of how much it lets the mc dwell on it. destind too basically has a perfect mc in terms of work/career, but they let her have her very glaring weaknesses and, once again, the premise forces her to address her shortcomings with regards to her idealistic view on soulmates/destiny and explores the head vs heart thing where she has to really examine her emotions and how they potentially come into conflict with her preconceptions of and preoccupation with numerical compatibility. 

thinking about it objectively, i feel like takado’s mc and mlfk ayato’s mc have a couple of similarities in the way that they don’t realise they’re in love for the longest time (although obviously childhood friends to lovers provides a better context for not realising that love - same with my boi natsume), but there’s just something lovable about mlfk’s mc that i don’t see in rmd. without going too deeply into it bc (1) i’m tired and (2) i’ve been going on about this for WAY too long now, i think that comes back to tone or writing (and possibly translation) style. i think at some point, i might actually go and compare the language in the “omg am i in love...?” scenes between takado’s mc, ayato’s mc and natsume’s mc but uh... not tonight haha. 

actually, at some point, i genuinely wondered if rmd mc was aromantic. i really just thought she did not experience romantic attraction because i literally got no sense of it through her internal monologue bc they kept pushing the whole like “i only relate to people’s ~aesthetics~” thing. and then i wondered how they were going to make an aromantic mc fall in romantic love...? because... it’s an otome game? (btw i’m not saying that aro people can’t enjoy otoge, i definitely know people who do! but there’s a big diff between someone playing an otoge vs someone being a character falling in romantic love in an otoge. but please call me out if i’m misunderstanding aromanticism!). anyway, long story short, rmd mc (takado’s especially) falling in love is absolutely unconvincing to me because i find her dialogue - both internal and external - rather unfeeling. 

these three points (1. translation that favours colloquialism over communicating emotional tone; 2. characterisation of a hubristic mc who doesn’t need to overcome significant challenges; 3. lack of emotional depth and empathy/understanding) are basically why i don’t think that she has good romantic chemistry with the love interests in romance md that i’ve read so far. i also have some very petty personal gripes (sekai...........) but they’re not relevant to this particular topic and frankly just... really petty so i don’t want to get into them here.

so anyway, long story short: i agree that i don’t think she would really vibe with kasumi in her current given state. like, they could be friends, maybe.

Does Edmund's initial opinion of MC differ much depending on her taking the card branch/quiet & talking about mother comparisons branch? Like are both approaches valid? The card is hilarious and kinda adorable, but I'm so soft for that oddly vulnerable conversation... I kinda intend to have a slooow friendship-to-romance, so the quiet seriousness fits her better. DAY 4: MINA

“The girl of the month is… Ham Eunji. Congratulations!”

It was yet another month and another announcement that Mina had gotten her hopes up for. Though she’s happy for Eunji, given the fact that she also got to see her journey on the MGAs, she couldn’t help but feel ashamed in herself for even hoping that there was a possibility of her being the next girl. Mina herself was aware of the fact that all the other girls had already had their fair amount of experience training in their entertainment groups, most of them being even longer than Mina’s measly five months. So she couldn’t help but internally laugh at herself for even thinking of a reality in which she was able to debut soon, let alone with this project. How foolish of her.

She tries her best to remain calm and in a good mood for the rest of the announcements. Their evaluation for this month would be “Holiday” by Chi Chi. Okay! Good. Mina’s a fan of Chi Chi and she thought the choreography looked fun and easy enough. But their solo evaluation would be something more vocal based and it’s then when she begins to feel a little uneasy. Sure, it made things easier with the fact that she didn’t have to focus on both singing and dancing. But the reason why she liked those kinds of evaluations was because she was certain that her dancing could distract from the fact that she was not the best singer.

When the announcements are over, Mina makes sure to congratulate Eunji for the debut announcement. She makes sure to let the other girl know that she is genuinely happy for her and that she’d continue to hope that she’ll be able to debut with her later on. What she doesn’t say, however, is how she is realizes that she was probably getting her hopes up. Mina’s aware that in this environment and also this situation, her comment wouldn’t exactly be apppropriate. So she holds it in for now, making sure that everyone else was doing fine.

The day goes on and Mina finds herself slowly feeling more upset as each hour goes by. Of course, she tries her best to not show that when talking to others. She even has to pull a fake smile in front of her brother because she’s desperate to make sure that he doesn’t suspect anything. In reality, he probably did. But at least Daniel knew Mina well enough to know that she wouldn’t want to go to in-depth with it in the company’s cafeteria of all places. Thankfully, Chungha hasn’t asked about it either. But it’s not like Mina would want to burden her with her troubles, given the fact that she was literally going to debut this month as well as go on a trip to Jeju in preparation for Juyeon’s debut. And the subunit debut after that.

There was only three spots leftover for HEARTZ and there was more than three trainees now, after the special casting. Mina was running out of time in order to try and prove herself worthy of being able to debut with Chungha, as well as the other confirmed girls she had the honor of befriending. And every second during practice, she hears all of the girls’ voices (mainly Jiyeon) in her head. She had to work her ass off, especially given the fact that she really is surrounded by trainees who have been here longer and are also as competitive as her, if not more.

So she had to give it her all, even if she shows weakness during that process.

“Are you okay? You’re not acting like yourself.”

The question surprises her, if she had to be honest. It’s the first time since two days ago where she started to feel her mood go downward. Had it not been for the fact that Soobin offered to walk her home and eat with her, her birthday would not be as good as it is now. She was too upset to even say yes to drinking with a friend on her first day of being able to drink legally! Though it wasn’t much of an outrage, she wouldn’t deny that she had been planning this months prior.

The sight of her boyfriend, however, usually always seems to lift her spirits even just a little. Was she nuts for this boy? Absolutely. But it wasn’t like there was much to do about it besides try to hide anything about their relationship to Sphere. Not many people knew about her relationship with him to begin with, besides Chungha and Daniel. So he was her little secret for now, even if she wanted to be obnoxiously cheesy with him now.

“What do you mean?” she asks, confused by his response. “What do you mean I’m not acting like myself?”

“Usually after training, you look happy or something. Like you’re doing something you actually like. But today you look kinda bummed out.” Soobin pouts at her and looks at her face closely. “Did something happen?”

“I’m just… stressed out,” she responds with a sigh.

“Do you want to talk about it?”

“I don’t know if I can go into a lot of detail about it, though.” And that was true. Upon entering the HEARTZ project, she was told to not talk to anyone outside of the Samsung companies about the project. In fact, she didn’t really have a person to rant about it too. Given the fact that her motivation was up until Yoojung had left, it was already too late for her to go to Chungha to rant about it when she needed her the most. Not to mention, she didn’t exactly want to burden her with her concerns about the project. The only other person she could express her troubles with was Daniel, but even he didn’t get to see her being vulnerable too often.

“Is it trainee stuff?” he asks. “You know, I’m friends with a few trainees! I think I could understand it a little bit.”

She shakes her head. “This is different. I actually can’t tell you because I might get in trouble with my company if I do.”

“Oh… maybe break the law for me?”

She snorts and hits him lightly. “No, dummy! I want to be able to debut!” After she says that, her smile drops as she’s reminded of the reason why she’s upset. “If I even get the chance to debut, that is.”

“Is this what this is all about?” he asks, tilting his head at her curiously. For a second, she has to hold herself back from cupping his face and babying him about how cute he is. “Mina, of course you have the chance to debut! You’re super good at dancing! And I’ve never heard you sing, but I bet you’re really good at that too.”

She frowns. “I’m not as good as everyone else, though. I don’t even know why I’m there if they already have so many talented people in the company.” She stops her steps, getting the taller to stop with her as she looks down at her feet and sighs. “I’ve never been good enough for anything. Why would I be good enough now?”

After she says that sentence, she thinks back on her life in the situations where she felt the most inadequate. It was nothing new for her. She had been feeling this way since she was born. She was always compared to her brothers’ achievements and, as a child, wanted to win her mother’s affections so terribly. And even after she had signed with Sphere, she had mostly given up on doing something she couldn’t achieve. Even with Soobin, she felt as if he deserved someone better. Someone who actually had the time to see him without her busy schedules. Someone who was not as much of a mess like she was. In her eyes, everyone who knew and loved her deserved someone that wasn’t her.

She was lost in her thoughts before Soobin gets her attention by leaning down and holding her face. She always thought that he was a warm person to her, but now she meant that quite literally with the fact that his hands made her face feel less cold. Whether or not that was because of him, the fact that she was blushing, or both, she looks up at him confused.

“Hey,” he says in a soft voice and it’s enough to make her feel safe with him. “I may not know anything about the industry, but I’m sure that if they signed you, they saw something in you. You’re not only the cutest girl in the world, but you’re also super hardworking and very talented. You are more than good enough and if they don’t see that, they suck.”

His words, while not eloquently spoken, was enough to make her feel much better and smile. He was right, though. They obviously saw something in her if they were to sign her as a trainee for Sphere. Whether it be because of her visuals or because of her skills, they believed in her. Hell, even her own boyfriend, who hasn’t even seen her perform, believes in her. And after all the time they spent together, before and after they started dating, it was definitely something that warmed her heart.

Her eyes start to water and he looks concerned. “What? Did I say something wrong?”

She shakes her head. “No,” she says with a smile as the tears stream down. “I just… Choi Soobin, I love you so much.”

“Aw…” His concerned face turns into a big grin as he pulls her in for a big hug, rubbing her back comfortingly as she cries into his shoulder. “I love you too, Kang Mina. I don’t know how I feel about making you cry on your birthday, but I’m glad it’s not the fact that I hurt you.”

"You’re stupid.” Her voice is muffled from his jacket as she says this and it earns a laugh from him.

“I know. I’m your stupid.” He pulls away from her and he wipes her face so that the tears on her cheeks are dried. “Come on. Let’s get something to eat! Even if it’s convenience store food.”

When 12 AM marked the start of December 10th, Mina had already made plans on what to do on her cellphone. The first thing she did was, obviously, spam her brother’s texts with a bunch of memes and “Happy Birthday”s, which earned a groan from him and Woong telling her to knock it off. So she stops, but not because he told her too. She stops because she has to watch Chungha- no, SERA’s music video.

With her headphones on and trying to be as silent as she can, she feels a variety of emotions in that moment. As soon as the video ends and she gives it a like, she decides to send Chungha a few messages.

Mina is about to turn her phone off when she thinks about sending Chungha a message. Even if she does feel a little bit better with life recently, she still wanted to be able to talk about her emotions over the project somehow. Even if the both of them had responsibilities for the next day, Mina decides to type in a message to her anyways to initiate something.

"Holiday” by Chi Chi was a cheerful song. Mina was definitely aware of that. Though it wasn’t too much of a bubblegum pop song, it was definitely something that Mina could see herself being able to pull off. Given the fact that she went through last month’s evaluation despite the more difficult concept, she had faith that she could be able to get through this one.

"Holiday” wasn’t a difficult song to dance to. It was already easy with the fact that she, as well as most of the other girls, knew the point dance of it already. Obviously, Heejin and Eunji were the main vocalists for this evaluation. Whenever they were practicing vocally, Mina always found herself admiring how they were able to belt and hit high notes so effortlessly. Though Eunji didn’t have to focus on solo evaluations anymore, Heejin definitely got this one in the bag.

This month, she tries her best to get close with Heejin the most. After all, Mina was someone who has always been amazed by her vocal talent. So, getting tips from her on how to live sing properly while dancing at the same time was very helpful for her. For rapping questions, she always went to Yoorim so that the both of them could bond over that. A part of Mina wants to ask Yoorim how she was feeling and if it was in any way similar to how she felt now. But she never bothered to ask, hoping to wait for the right time to do so.

As they perform the song with the happiness that the song brought to the listener, Mina felt her mood lift up. At least, with the fact that she enjoyed this song, she could probably worry less about how she’ll do during the singing evaluation. Hopefully.

Wanting to sing a song that allowed her to sing softly but also reach some high notes, she knew that a Bol4 song would be the perfect choice. Obviously, she wanted to get some rap in there as well, considering she wanted to improve more on that skill. So with her two options being “Some” and “Galaxy”, she decided to choose the latter. Not to mention, it was a ballad! And that was practically perfect for a song that would show her vocal ability.

In the past, Mina’s version of “voice lessons” was singing at the noraebang either with her friends or on her own. She’d either be screaming to a bunch of hype KPOP songs with her friends, or she’d be singing a more emotional song whenever she was alone. She thinks out of all the girls in HEARTZ, Jiyeon was quite aware of that… especially considering Mina believed to be rapping to herself until their faithful encounter.

But ever since July, she has been trying her best to improve herself vocally, especially so with the HEARTZ project being in her life right now. And like Chungha said in their text messages from a few weeks ago, she has been improving. Even their voice instructor pointed that out to her! So that gave Mina a higher chance of succeeding with this evaluation, right?

That’s what she thought, too. But after her “rap” in the second verse, Mina feels herself getting out of breath. It was definitely due to nerves. But after that, she tried her best to pull through the rest of the second verse and the chorus with ease. The real issue, however, occurs when she reaches the final chorus with its high D5 note. Of course she could reach it, but with her nerves, she finds her voice getting shaky there. If this were any other song, she could’ve pulled it off as a vibrato. But this part didn’t have vibrato, so she was screwed.

As soon as the song ends, she bows to the coaches with a fake smile on her face, trying to not make it look obviously forced. But all she could think about now was leaving the room and going to the bathroom to cry out her stress of messing that up.

But hey! At least that’s over with.

Episode 5 - “things got extremely messy.” -Raffy

After voting out Keegan, things got extremely messy. Lukas basically threw an entire tantrum in the tribe chat (which he claims wasn't one, but we all know it is one) that rubbed me completely the wrong way. He somehow found out that I was a person who threw the challenge last round. Apparently, someone in my alliance is a little rat. It wasn't Brien. And it wasn't Jessie. Because he's mad at Brien as well (didn't know Brien was flipping at all) and Jessie didn't know that we were throwing. That leaves Jay and Mac. Lukas apparently has quotes from the conversation that occurred. It can't be Jay because I never mentioned throwing in our PMs, so it has to be Mac who was probably trying to cover his own spot. That's why he keeps sending voice messages instead of text. He's definitely too strategic and wily. He's trying to cover himself on all bases when he doesn't need to. If he wasn't on my target list before, I know he is now. I don't know why he did it, but I am going to snake him out. Someone did tell Lukas. I feel like I can trust that. But all of this nonsense Lukas pulled has just sealed his fate. Also, on an alliance call, Mac was a little too quick to be like "I'll put a throw away vote on one of you to throw people on the other tribe off." And he wants to throw the challenge again? This dude needs to learn that not everything can be based on strategy. He's the traitor and I need to watch what I say to him from now on. We really need to win this challenge though. Because I am now in a super uncomfortable position with all that has happened.

So. My plan worked 100%. Mastermind shit. Things popped off afterwards. Lukas was a lil messy and quite annoying about being left out, even though they said A) Lukas said he knew Keegan was getting votes and B) Lukas and Keegan are good mates. Now, here’s my issue. Raffy doesn’t wanna throw this next challenge. I mean fair enough BUT...I’m pretty sure Raffy and Lukas are working together, and Raffy would want to flip at merge, probably take Jessie too. That’s super worrying. I’m happy the 5-2 vote worked perfectly. I just need some damn Olive Oil for this idol!

To be completely honest this is the most comfortable I felt all game and I know in survivor you’re not supposed to feel comfortable bc that’s when you’re blindsided but I would bet my bottom dollar that the vote is coming down to Keegan and Mac unless something changes hours before tribal.  the 4some of me raffy jay and Mac is strong at least for the time being Lukas and Keegan suspect something which means one of 2 things. 1 someone told them something or 2 everyone is being quiet with them and they are getting suspicious. I hope this is the right vote for me to allow me to make merge and not be the next boot but I know one thing is Lukas is gonna be mad coming back to camp without Keegan I came into this tribe I observed the dynamics and saw it was 3-3-1 but I took the swing vote power away from Jessie and flipped myself to hopefully give me more agency later in the game and more allies amongst all the original tribes. I feel bad voting Keegan but it’s the name of the game and he seems like a real nice guy otherwise

So tribal went well for me I stayed . I really thought Keegan was gonna pull some sort of advantage out but that never happened . So then we are all chilling on call a few minutes after tribal and Lukas joins the call and accuses us of throwing the last challenge . Everyone seemed kinda shocked so I was like yeah no we didn’t throw the challenge . So after that he spammed the chat for a good twenty minutes . I think he was drunk or high idk . Anyways according to him I have a blue aura and I am a Twizzler /jolly rancher when it comes to candy . So that was an eventful night oh yeah I also told the tribe to please give me the easy puzzle because I’m not good at puzzles . So today comes around and everyone’s quiet until Brien comes to me asking how I’d feel about a trio and of course I’m gonna accept like the fuck? Why wouldn’t I accept a group of some sorts I’ve been trying to get in one all game . So me, Brien and Mac the oak tree man are now a trio which is cool because I vibe with them. I’m also vibing with this lovely puzzle its spooky spooky . I am also loving these random items I pick up that don’t help me get advantages I’m really hoping there’s some merge spells that include this items . I mean I’m looking ahead to merge when I may not make it that far but I’m gonna hope I do . I really need to stop with these long confessionals but these are my thoughts so you know gotta get them out there ! Anyways witch out 🔮

Brien came up to me thinking about how Lukas knew about the throwing. He thinks Mac was the one to do it as well. I am glad we are both on the same page because I now can express my plans for if we go to tribal. I want everyone to put a vote on Lukas, then I want one of either Brien or I to put a vote on Mac. That way it will turn into a 5-1-1 vote. If Lukas plays an idol, then it will tie between whoever he voted for and Mac. And if he voted for Mac then it's even better. I told all of this to Brien who was concerned about how we would do if Mac did not go home. I told him that we can blame the stray vote on Jessie. At the very least, Brien and I do not trust Mac anymore. Thank god someone sees his treachery besides me. Brien was also concerned about Jay's relationship with Lukas. I feel the same way, but I think that Jay will stick with us in the long term because Jay is smart. I have no plans at the moment to turn on him like I do with Mac. However, I am going to keep my Lukas dislike at a minimum so that I do not rub Jay the wrong way. Who knew that I would end up being a duo with Brien lol. I've talked to Jessie more than I've had in the past few rounds which is good. She seems to be oblivious and not believe Lukas in the throwing. But, she might make for a great ally and snoop if we go to tribal. Because of the mess that tribal might become, I am really hoping that we can pull out this win. I've gotten the best that I possibly can get, and I put the people who would most likely throw on the same section so as not to fuck us up (Lukas and Mac). Crossing my fingers that all this planning is for naught and I can relax tomorrow for my mini.

JUST A QUICK BACKTRACK I REALLY DID EXPOSE AUSTIN AND GET HIM VOTED OUT I'M SHOOK ANYWAY. I think being shy is a bit part of my nature at first so I think I've come off as a lil blunt or not caring or something, I think that's also why I don't really have a solid alliance. I miss my boi Mac! I love Mac I truly do and not in a romantic way or anything but he's literally a brother and a friend for life. I wanna meet up with him and possibly meet people who are more willing to work with me. I miss Jessie too! I actually really liked her so I would love to work with her again. Gizmo right now is someone who I think I wanna work with the most I can see us 2, Alex & either Paolo or Christian forming something and taking out someone like Dylan who is super intelligent. I love Dylan I think they're a great person but Dylan is like a walking Wikipedia and Zach has also shown his strategically strong in the game. Well I have a 50/50 shot at being the one going home. Hopefully I did enough to cast the vote off me and onto Alex, but who knows. At this point I've really done all I can to get me out of this situation. This is a sideblog to weaponizedembrace. I follow from there.

Morita is MCU and HC based.

I am not Japanese, nor do I particularly consider myself a history buff, but I am going to do my best to portray Morita as accurately and sensitively as I can when issues surrounding race/racism arise. If you ever have a problem with something I’ve written or said in regards to this, please come talk to me off anon. I am happy to learn and do better.

OOC -phobias/isms and repeat negative vagueing will get you unfollowed.

I will probably not follow rp blogs that do not have a statement of the mun’s age (the most important of these to me), basic rules and tagging, and reasonably cut posts. I will also not follow or interact with strictly genderbent/rule 63 versions of canon muses.

Thought I suspect it won’t arise here, I love duplicates, and I’m happy to do same muse threads!

I do not enforce reblog karma strictly, but please be considerate and don’t blast my notifs without ever sending anything.

Writing/formatting/etc:

I am MUTUALS ONLY for IC interaction! This blog is going to be very selective in who I interact with (and probably low activity).

2-5 paragraphs is the sweet spot for me for plotted/continued threads, and sometimes I get on a roll and write novels for people. You don’t have to match my lengths, but don’t give me 3 sentences when I write 3 paras, you feel?

One of my personal peeves in roleplaying is conversation splicing. If we’re writing long replies with a lot of dialogue and/or action and you notice that I don’t respond to everything single thing your muse said/did, and have started my response by replying to the last thing your muse said first and working back if necessary, this is my attempt to prevent serious splicing of the conversation. If this bothers you, please talk to me and we can switch to shorter threads.

I have a tendency to tense switch a lot between past and present. If that’s going to bother you… *shrugs*

Muse =/= mun.

I don’t require formatting or icons for interaction. That’s bullshit.

Mutuals can feel free to continue asks as long as you move it to a new post (tell me if you genuinely can’t). I do drop threads from time to time, though, so please understand these may go before plotted things, depending on how developed they become. Note: If an ask is nsfw, I will be more selective about continuing it. If we’ve never written or discussed smut (and you’re not one half of my otp–see autoshipping section below), asking before continuing might be a good idea if you’re going to be bothered if I don’t reply.

Dropping threads happens if I get overwhelmed or overly stressed, and I might not tell you (anxiety! -jazz hands-). Relationships developed in said threads remain, though, if mutually desired.

When I queue a reply, it’s usually just scheduled for the next day so I can feel accomplished clearing multiple drafts at once without potentially getting them right back.

My reply speeds vary greatly, from immediate to months later. You can reply at any speed you want to, but I do archive threads on a semi-regular schedule (see tracker link above for details).

Messaging/Inbox:

Feel free to send me ooc/character development/positivity/etc and spam my inbox whether we’re mutuals or not!

IC asks from your muse are for mutuals only.

Asks are sometimes deleted for the same reason threads get dropped. It’s not personal! Feel free to send more at any time!

Please don’t send messages like “hi” or “wanna rp?” with nothing else.

I am mentally ill and anxiety ridden (in case you haven’t realized yet lol), and therefore can be spotty in replying to messages. It’s not you. Sorry in advance.

Shipping/Smut/Etc:

GENERAL: 1) Shipping is one of my favorite things. I am a ship whore, but I will likely want to write at least a little with you before fully committing to shipping. 2) Morita is cis and bisexual, though threads taking place during his canon timeline that become shippy with men will probably feature a heavy dose of fear and/or internalized homophobia due to the times. This does not mean I don’t want to explore that, though, because I do. 3) If you are feeling chemistry between your muse and mine, please tell me! I probably am too! 4) If you send me a shippy/smutty meme and we’ve never discussed either, my muse may respond in a way that might not be positive or I may delete your ask.

AUTOSHIPPING: The more comfy I am with any given mun, the more likely I am to jump into ships with any of their muses without build up, if they are of the same mind.

SMUT: I like writing smut, if muses are muns are comfortable with each other and of age, though I will get bored if it’s all we write. Do not expect either muse to be DTF in our first thread, though it may occasionally happen if plotted/discussed.

Triggers/Tagging/Etc:

Canon-typical violence/blood/etc. will not be tagged.

I will try to remember to tag nsfw, and for other triggers as “tw: trigger”. If I forget one or there’s one I’m not tagging that you think I should be, please message me!

Misc:

I use Kazunari Ninomiya as a faceclaim because Morita should have been 24 years old during TFA (Kenneth Choi was around 40 at the time). It’s already easy enough to forget how young most of the men fighting in WWII were. You will probably see Kenneth Choi here from time to time, though, just bc he is the canon fc.
