Tl;dr: Jordan Peterson’s self-empowerment does not apply to those who are addicted to drugs and are currently living in abusive households. It’s okay to give people a lending hand when they ask. Telling them to go to a doctor and get a job when they explain their struggles, how they are broken and don’t know how to go to a doctor and get a job. For several years. Is not the best course of action. 

It’s impossible to know what it’s like to be poor when you will never have to worry about it because your parents planned for your life properly and especially when your parents have hurt and manipulated you for years.

My oldest brother has told me to check out Jordan Peterson. I’ve known about him for a while. I used to be really into Joe Rogan and UFC, but I am no longer a fan and am actually embarrassed I used to like him. 2010-2017 . I listened to him some more today. He preached about how men need to forge their own path because no one is going to do it for them. That’s great advice. It’s empowering. Especially if you’re a small man with no father, which is why I feel this hits home with my oldest brother.  He’s short for a guy. 5f5-t6. He says 5ft8. Probably in shoes. Because every 5ft10 guy claims to be 6ft and it makes for awkward situations. I don’t condone insulting someone for their height. It’s something I’ve personally never worried about, because I’ve never had to. He has. It’s a struggle for a lot of shorter people and I understand this. I never really thought of him as short. When, I do, it explains the behavior in a way that I may be onto something.  We’ve had mutual friends, but he has always had different rules for us. He’s stricter with us. We don’t talk about our feelings. He’s in charge. He claims he’s always busy. He has worked at a used video game store in a part-time capacity while attending school for 20+. 3 kids, divorced. I had my grasp on millions of dollars. I touched mountain tops and gorgeous women on 100ft yachts. I did this coming from nothing and working an entry-level retail job. I met so many people who don’t have to worry about money it warped my perspective greatly. 

My Dad more or less disowned my oldest brother as a bastard child and treated him harsh early-on. Perhaps he sees my suffering as validation of his decision to move out. I’ve tried relating to him on my Father’s abuse and multiple hobbies. Cycling, guitar, video games, music. He’s not interested. 

He refuses to show any sort of compassion or empathy towards me. “Man, just look at him. He’s so bitter and resentful of anyone who is more successful or wealthier than him. He’s like a biker now. That’s why you don’t do drugs.”. It’s never too late to start. I have told him that. I can recall 2 times I have hung out with him in the last 10 years. His boundaries make for a shitty relationship.   Jordan Peterson was addicted to Xanax. When I hear him speak. I hear the same excuses every junkie makes. Instead of going through withdrawal and a taper. He went to Russia and received a treatment he couldn’t get in other countries. He was put into a coma for over 8 days. When I went through xanax withdrawal, I was also addicted to heroin. Nearly died from seizures. I had a broken jaw the entire time, I spent 7 days in ICU. 3 days in a psych ward AFTER that. I hadn’t made a mention of suicide since the first or second day. I refused to be admitted to the psych ward several times. They told me I had to sign the papers or the police were coming in. This was the only defiant act other than when I first woke up in the ICU after the seizure. 

My jaw was shifted several inches and locked open. I couldn’t close my mouth for 10 days. I chewed with my tongue and top teeth. Because the inside of my cheek was pinched between my teeth, cut open, and infected.  Every time I talked. I chewed on the inside of my cheek.   I received no pain killers. I went to an oral surgeon at a dental college, with no anesthetic he snapped my jaw back in place. It took several minutes and another injection of lidocaine and cold spray. It didn’t help much. I was screaming. 

After this. The abuse of my father continued. I also ran out of SSRI’s after 3 months of venlafaxine. SSRI withdrawal was new to me. I experienced it from December 2019-March 2020. I experienced a vertigo like sensation when I turned my head. It almost sounded like Star Wars blasters because there was high frequency ringing in my ears and the pitch would change when I turned my head. My vision felt a little warped too. I believe this sensation is what is commonly referred to as “brain zaps”. 

I can already hear Jordan Peterson’s excuses. “But I help save people’s lives!” “I am different.” “I am the exception.”. It’s the same excuses every junkie who doesn’t like admitting mistakes makes. The first comment on the Jordan Peterson video I watched where he talks about the horrors of Xanax. It says “We love you Jordan, get well soon Brother!”.  It’s a cult-like group now. Pushing books, health pills, blenders. Whatever they can hock to people in order to keep their lifestyles up.  My first thought. Ha, that’s probably my brother. He’s never said anything like that to me before. 

Never. It’s not required. But it doesn’t exist between us. Never has. I tried to correct that and told him I liked how the families I met elsewhere acted towards each other and he agreed. Especially as his divorce and my moving back home coincided. I saw this as an opportunity to get to know him better. We did several things together but the kids were always there. It quickly became a chore. I made it clear several times that I had issues I wanted to address and speak about regarding my health and safety. Involving my parents. Involving my lungs, and living situation. I just wanted someone to talk to. I made that clear. Anyone. My middle brother is too shy and dumb to comprehend the big brain level I operate at. He’ll get triggered.  “Yeah dude, you should find a wife who will pay for your shit and work part-time for a poverty wage while being a part-time stay at home Dad.”. Knock’er up 3-4 times and complain about being poor when you have no career or college education until your mid 40′s. Yeah dude, you’re doing it all wrong. Just do it right!”.

I felt like some of the girls I dated, would’ve been into marriage. But seriously, I was so awkward around girls until my mid-20′s. No confidence that I was attractive or that a lot of the girls I was friend-zoning myself in wanted to fuck like porn stars. Or your heads on my lap?

I didn’t want to marry Lauren. I thought she was too beautiful and talented to be influenced by my negativity. That’s honestly what I told myself when I stayed up, watched her sleep, to make sure she was still breathing. I haven’t really written about her yet. It’s going to be tough. 

He’s not a trashy person or a mean person by any means. He’s always been a smug little prick, with a holier than thou. Despite having the same hobbies. He never invited me or accepted my invitations. I think it’s weird. You’re my brother. Stop being so weird about everything and put your guard down for a second. Take-off the lifts. Everyone knows. 

I never put much thought into how being short could have an impact in our relationship. But with all of the Joe Rogan memes about how he over-compensates for his small stature by framing shots with furniture. I realized that my brother does over-compensate for his lack of height.  I think most smaller men do. There’s nothing wrong with that, except for the overly macho way Rogan talks about how someone who is insecure about their height needs to conquer their inner-bitch and start a podcast. Channel the “violence” in your DNA as he has.  He’s being a hypocrite. The dude is on so many drugs and hormones, his head increased 3x. Good for him, right? Except the dude tells millions of cult-like followers that hormones are fucked up. The fake-it until you make-it attitude is selfish and shallow. The average person interprets that as, “It’s okay to lie, cheat, and steal, as long as you make money.” “Be selfish, it’s the best way, when it benefits you! Socialism is good?”. Sending me mixed signals.

Seems like he only cares because he realizes it makes him hypocritical and I feel Joe Rogan is overly-sensitive about anything that could make him appear as homosexual.  So, that’s where the attraction in these leaders of men who don’t feel powerful, didn’t have fathers, and feel abandoned in the world are attracted to people like this. They seek guidance and found it.  I simply want to seek guidance from my friends and family. I don’t have friends and I don’t have family.  I should’ve shacked up with a wealthy girl in Colorado when I had the chance, right?. I thought that was such a shallow and shitty way to think. My parents would always say that. But, I chose to continue valuing making my own path. My brothers actually tried to hurt me during this time and that’s the only time they have done so. I think they were jealous that I was living on my own. I was struggling and poor. But I was doing it. I am capable.  Going down the path of addiction. I’ve been through heroin withdrawal 50-100 times. I chipped and shot up, used daily when I could. Got sick when I couldn’t. Benzos twice. SSRI’s once.  It’s similar to how someone who will never run out of money or be in a position such as yourself. Telling you to get a job and go to the doctor. After everything I just wrote(I don’t expect many, if anyone to read this and likely dismiss me as a severely disturbed individual to be avoided.). Keep in mind. A lot of the abuse from my parents, happened leading up to and AFTER my most recent suicide attempt. Calling me fat happened 5 months after I was released. I asked my Dad to stop calling me names “worthless fat piece of shit” or laugh when I’m making food. He knows I have a history of cutting and getting bullied. He’s just ignorant.  That’s why it’s weird to see him with such low energy and I feel there is something going on with him health wise. He is incapable of being nice for some reason. So, he is just not going to speak to me now. That is better. I wish he could just understand, admit his mistakes, and move on. That’s a trend in my family. No one admits mistakes. These people snap and go crazy rather than admit any sort of mistake. I used to be like that when I was younger. But I snapped out of it when I was around ~20yrs olds thanks to hallucinogenic drugs.  Alright, that’s enough. If I ever lose my vocal chords due to the throat cancer I likely have. At least I’m a decent enough writer. I could condense this greatly, by not rambling and getting my point across in a formatted/concise manner.  Typing and writing keep my fingers nimble. I started playing acoustic guitar last week. First time in a year or so. I might upload something.

The Bet

The general stir begun in the language department of Avengers Tower leaks into the other departments in less than two days, to the embarrassment of the perpetrators. One hundred dollars to whoever can successfully ask Agent 28 on a date: Miles and Rishi pray she never finds out it was them. 

Neither of them even try for the date. Forget the money - they just don’t want to be garrotted.  

Natasha finds all of this very amusing, of course - she’s perfectly aware that Agent 28 isn’t in the habit of garrotting office workers, even if they do have a habit of obnoxious pranks. 28 would just think it’s hilarious. Because that’s just the way she is.  

But Bucky has found it all less than amusing, and so Nat just smirks to herself and hunkers down to watch all of the drama unfold. It’s very promising: she had seen the mischief in 28’s eyes and the new ease in Bucky the morning after karaoke night. That night Sam had so kindly informed Natasha of the bet in Bucky’s presence. Sam doesn’t know why it’s so funny - yet - nor why Natasha had been laughing so hard after Bucky and 28 had made their staggered disappearances.  

A smile drifts up Natasha’s face as she absently stirs the honey into her tea, standing at the sink and gazing out the window to the bright morning sun bathing Manhattan. She hears the footsteps approach, and doesn’t turn around.  

“I want in,” she says without preamble. 

“Huh?” Sam’s morning voice is still groggy.  

“On the bet. Remember? Agent 28? Date?”

“Oh.” There’s a sound as Sam rifles with the coffee pot. “Uh - are you gonna ask her on a date?” 

“No,” Natasha says, because she values her life and Bucky is a formidable opponent. Even if she does think you might agree to split the prize money. Patiently she explains, “I’m saying, I want to bet on the outcome.” 

There’s a snort over the steady pour of liquid. “Last I heard, odds are on Paul from security, and Steve.” 

“Steve? Our Steve?” 

“Yeah.” There’s a slurp, and a grunt. Natasha grins to himself - Sam had burned his tongue. “Apparently the general consensus is that 28 likes blonds,” Sam adds. “Not fair.” 

“Whether it’s fair or not, it’s not true,” Natasha murmurs, half to herself.  

“Huh?” 

“Oh, nothing. Paul’s cute, isn’t he? He does a lot of squats.” 

A pause. “Why does everyone have a crush on Paul, anyway?” Sam grumbles. “Doesn’t have a brain behind that handsome face - ” 

Natasha turns around, blowing on her tea before taking a sip. Sam is leaning against the counter, coffee mug in hand, and looking grouchy. And still sleepy. “I want to put $500 down on Bucky,” Natasha states. 

Sam’s mouth falls open. “On - Tinman?” 

“Yes,” Natasha says firmly.  

Silence. Sam is staring at her as if his brain has completely stopped working - but Nat just keeps smiling, and takes another sip. Then Sam shakes himself, giving a laugh. 

“No way. There’s no chance.” 

“Why’s that?” Natasha prods.  

“That grump? And 28?” Sam laughs again - even the mere idea is apparently hilarious. “Please. She’d eat him alive.” 

“Maybe he likes that.” 

“Gross. Please don’t fill my head with those mental images.” 

“But I’m in, right? On the bet?” 

Sam shrugs. “Sure. It’s your loss.” 

But Natasha just smiles. Sam doesn’t see the warning.

Bucky had it all planned out.  

Monthly poker night - first Friday of the month - with all the team minus Stark around the dining table with the lights down low to set the mood (Sam’s idea). It’s easily the most casual of the team’s interactions, with past and future missions far from anyone’s thoughts. Including his. And his attention? Across the table on you. 

 As usual.  

“Fold,” Clint sighs.  

“Fold,” Steve shrugs.  

“I’m in.” Natasha tosses in a chip.  

Your turn. Your lips purse, as if thinking - but if Bucky knows that sparkle in your eyes, you’ve already planned your moves. Then without a word, you push five chips into the center.  

“On second thought,” Natasha says after a moment’s shocked silence. Steve and Clint are shaking their heads; Sam appears to be having a major moral conundrum as he frowns at the cards in his hands. 

“Hey Steve, did you end up getting those tickets to the Knicks this weekend?” Bucky asks, casual-like, as he tosses in his cards. Doesn’t care. He’s playing a different game. 

“Huh?” Steve’s face is pinched. “Uh - no, I didn’t.” 

“Bummer.” 

“Which is just as well,” Steve adds, as Sam gnaws his lips in thought. You’re just sitting primly, waiting for Sam’s decision. “Stark put me in charge of Clint and Nat for the Somalia mission. Just found out a few hours ago.” 

“Babysitter,” Natasha clarifies. 

“Well, if Clint hadn’t accidentally blown up that bridge in France two weeks ago - ” Steve begins, a little crabbily, but Sam interrupts as he pushes his chips into the center of the table. Now this might get interesting - Bucky holds back a grin at the smugness in your face.  

“It was an accident!” Clint protests.  

“Ante up,” you say, and three more chips go in the center.  

“I hate this,” Sam says.  

“Geez, Stevie, if you’re not gonna be here, there go my weekend plans,” Bucky says with a dramatic sigh. “I saw there’s a Glenn Miller revival band playing in Queens Saturday night. Thought that might be fun, if the Knicks didn’t go through.”

“Glenn Miller?” you say with interest, eyes dragging over to Bucky. He likes that glint. “My grandfather played trumpet with Glenn. Talked about it all the time.” 

“Did he, now?” Bucky lifts a brow back, even though he’s heard the stories a dozen times already.  

“You have a grandpa?” Sam snarks at you. “A family? Man, 28, I thought you just popped out of the ground.” 

You stick your tongue out at him for that - well-deserved - but it’s his parting shot before folding. Sam screws up his face, shakes his head, and tosses his cards in. Three two’s - not bad. But your smile is growing as you turn your cards over, laying them out.  

2, 3, 5, 6, and an 8.  

“Aw, c’mon!” Sam groans, as you cackle madly. Even Natasha and Steve are laughing as you drag the chips over to you. The biggest stack of the night so far, easily. Bucky chortles to himself.  

“If you wanna go see the band, 28, I was already planning on it,” Bucky says, also very casually, as Steve scoops up the cards to shuffle.  

“That sounds like fun,” you say, just as nonchalantly as you stack your winnings. “Better than staying at home and eating ice cream with my cat.” 

Bucky snorts, though for a different reason than the others - you don’t have a cat.  

“Sounds like a date,” Natasha teases, and Bucky freezes. But you just lift a brow.  

“You could come too, but you’re going to be gone,” you say with a shrug. “Only Sam’s gonna be here - Sam, you wanna come with us?” 

Sam’s mouth is opening and closing in some sort of shock - his eyes are on Natasha, then you, then Bucky. Whatever’s going on in his head, Bucky doesn’t really care to know. But he hopes it’s a reason for refusal.  

“No?” Sam says at last, as a question. “I mean, yes? How am I supposed to answer this, huh?” 

“However you like, Sammy,” you say kindly, before the flicker of your lips belays the teasing to come. “You can be our third wheel.” 

“Aw, hell naw!” 

Bucky turns a laugh to a cough, picking up his new hand as he tries very hard not to meet your eyes. It’s difficult. Oh, he’s gonna laugh about this with you later… 

“Fine,” you tell Sam coolly. “Just me and Bucky, then.” 

The undercurrents are unbearable, to just about everyone but Clint. Natasha just smirks to herself, loving the entire scene and the hand Steve had dealt her. It feels good to be in charge, especially when no one else realizes it.  

Poker goes on until past midnight; you duck out and head home, Bucky ducks out and goes to his room (or elsewhere), Clint flops over to the couch and starts to snore, Steve retreats to the bathroom, and Sam nearly hisses as the dining room quiets. Natasha just smiles.  

“How did you know?” Sam accuses, brows furrowed.  

“How don’t you know?” she retorts. 

“C’mon Nat - that was totally out of the blue! Did you plan that with them? What’s going on?” 

“Sam,” Natasha says patiently, leaning forward so that her hands lace on the table as she grins at Sam’s baffled expression. “Do you remember the first mission Agent 28 had with the team?” 

“Uh - no.” 

“You weren’t there, so you naturally don’t know,” she explains. “We were snatching up a scientist from being picked up by the wrong guys - Steve, Bucky, 28, and I. 28 shot a gun from around Bucky and he popped a boner. It was all very simple, and the rest is history.” 

Sam’s lips are pressed close together in a very thin line - Natasha waits as he processes this. 

“A - a bone...please don’t put that image in my head!” Sam groans, and he rubs his eyes with the heels of his hands. “Nat, are you kidding me right now?” 

“Definitely not,” Natasha assures him. “I couldn’t come up with anything more hilarious than this. They’ve been hiding their relationship for months - groping each other in supply closets, sneaking around on missions - remember Stockholm? Bucky wasn’t really injured when he blew you guys off; he faked it so he could stay at the hotel with 28. Milan? They were doing it backstage of the fashion show; that’s how they got to the targets first. The underwear you found in your laundry? 28’s got mixed up with Bucky’s stuff.” 

“Stop!” Sam’s face has crumpled entirely - in disgust, horror, shock. “Don’t tell me anymore, please. I’d prefer to stay ignorant.” 

“Ignorant or not, I win the bet,” Natasha says smugly. “Better let everyone know Bucky got 28.” 

“Does - does anyone else know?” Sam asks after a moment, voice still a little shaky. “About...them.” 

“Steve knows.” 

“And he hasn’t...talked to it about them?” 

“Nah - Steve’s too nice. He wants to let them keep doing whatever they’re doing.” 

“Well, what they’re doing sounds gross and unfit for my ears.” 

“Oh, it is.” Natasha gives a laugh. “But as soon as you’re used to it, you’ll enjoy it much more. It passes the time to watch them sneak around.” 

“Watch them!? Natasha, that is - ” 

“Not that kind of watch, you perv.” She stands from the table, tossing the pack of cards across to Sam. “Just, don’t tell Clint, yeah? He can’t keep his mouth shut. We’re letting them keep their secret. For now.” 

Sam shakes his head as Natasha starts to leave - but a sudden question has her pausing. “Nat - ” he says slowly. “Do you think Bucky knows her real name?” 

Natasha chuckles dryly. “Doubt there’s much about her Bucky doesn’t know.” 

“Ew, ew, ew, ew, - ” 

And she smiles all the way back to her room, a wealthier woman... 

...until a few days later, when you reveal you knew about the bet all along and demand the payout in exchange for the indignity and harassment it caused you.

A/N: Obviously heavily inspired by Zico’s song of the same name. Have been wanting to finish this for FOREVER, and finally! It’s also my first gender-neutrel fic so please go easy on me. Hope you guys like :)

“Hyung! Could you get me some ramen from the convenience store?”

“Why can’t you get it yourself?”

Chan swivelled in his chair to face the older boy, pouting slightly. “I’m studying! And it’s cold outside. These finals are really important, you know this! What if I catch a cold out there?”

A loud sigh came from the couch where Soonyoung was laying on. “Then eat the ramen we have! Mingyu just went grocery shopping yesterday.”

“But I want my favourite…” The younger boy was petulant and Soonyoung found himself sighing again, sitting up to face his favourite dongsaeng. The kid looked exhausted – what he needed was sleep, not ramen – but one look at that pout and Soonyoung was slowly standing up, though not without a bit of groaning and feigned reluctance.

“You’re lucky I love you kid,” Soonyoung muttered, searching for a sweater and his keys. Chan’s lips quirked up into a grin. “Thanks hyung. You’re the best.”

“Yeah yeah.” Soonyoung wandered into his room and grabbed the first thing off the floor, pulling it over his head. When he walked out Chan was scrunching his nose at him.

“What?”

“You’re wearing that?” the younger boy asked with disdain.

“What? It’s comfy!”

“It’s ugly.”

“It’s late. No one’s going to look at what I’m wearing.”

“But–”

“Do you want your ramen or not?” Soonyoung threatened. Chan just shrugged, turning back to his work. “Do whatever you want hyung. I’m just saying you never know when you’ll bump into your soulmate and I doubt you want to be caught in that ugly sweater.”

Soonyoung just rolled his eyes and left the dorm. Instantly, a cold whip of air hit him. Ugly or not, he’d rather be warm in the thick sweater than freeze to death trying to make a good impression, soulmate be damned.

Working at a convenience store was very boring as you had quickly found out less than a week into your new job. Especially if one happens to be on the graveyard shift, which was unfortunately the one you were currently working right now. The store itself wasn’t so bad – it was nicer than most, the main colour scheme being reds and pinks instead of the usual puke green, and had indie neon décor. But with not much else to do besides restocking the already well-stocked shelves and counting the money in the cash register every ten minutes, even the whimsical setting lost its wonder after a few days. You had stopped caring about how you looked after the first day when you quickly realized the only people who came into the store at this time were hungry college kids or middle-aged men looking for booze.

When the bell rang on you shift that night, the person who walked through immediately fell into the first category.

Watch as he walks straight to the back with the ramen… And of course he did. He read the labels quickly before putting a whole bunch of the same type into a basket. He moved closer to the front where the chips were and you got to observe his side profile. You didn’t mean to stare. It’s just that he was the most exciting thing you had seen all night – all week actually – and he did have quite a nice side profile; high cheekbones but chubby cheeks (how does that work?) and a sharp jawline. Striking eyes.

When he turned to the front you quickly looked away. You started picking on your sleeve instead, tracing the huge white number one on it. Admittedly it was an ugly sweater – your mom had bought it for you when she went through a thrift store phase – and if you had known this guy would come into the store that night, you would definitely have worn something nicer.

A basket was placed on the counter and you realized the guy was done with his shopping. You looked up a little startled – thankfully he was looking elsewhere.

You scanned the items quickly. “That would be fifteen–”

You frowned. You took in the guy’s appearance once more. There was something familiar about his outfit that you couldn’t really place a finger on. Have you seen that top somewhere before? Your eyes widened when it hit you. You two were wearing the exact same sweater!

“Is there a problem?” the boy asked, shaking you out of your reverie.

“No no, nothing’s wrong.” You forced a smile. “That will be fifteen-oh-six.”

When you handed over the bag you noticed something else that was curious – on the pinky finger of his left hand he wore a silver ring much like the one you wore on your right.

“Hello?” There was a questioning look on his face as he held out the money.

“Oh I’m sorry!” Flustered, you counted out the proper change and returned it to him. “Um, have a nice night.”

The boy gave you a bemused look, before heading out the door. You watched him through the glass windows until he was out of sight. Then you went back to staring at the four walls and pondered over the chances of a good-looking boy walking in at 2am wearing the exact same sweater as the one your mom had found at the bottom of a discount pile.

Soonyoung toed off his shoes and put the keys back on the hook when he arrived at the dorm. On the way inside he passed by the hallway mirror and couldn’t help but stop and stare. He frowned at his sweater in particular. Were ugly sweaters a trend nowadays?

“Hyung! Is that you?” Chan called from inside.

“Yeah I’ve got your ramen!” Soonyoung took off the ugly thing – Chan had turned the heat way too high while he was gone – and bustled into the kitchen. He filled the kettle and tore open a bowl of ramen for himself. Chan padded in soon after, muttering “finally” while he waited for the water to boil.

“Hyung, how many packets of ramen did you buy? It looks like I’ll last the whole week!”

Soonyoung just shrugged, mind too occupied elsewhere. Mainly on the brown sweater and the person who had been wearing the exact same one back at the store.

Chan slid into a chair opposite the older boy. He shrugged. “At least you don’t have to go get more any time soon. Thanks hyung.”

“Huh.” And he had wanted to see you again too.

After that night the boy didn’t come back to the store again and you quickly forgot about the whole thing. Well, not really – he still had been pretty cute – but it was secondary now, especially since you were neck deep in finals. You studied fashion at the local university – the irony – and were about to start on the science of buttons and bowties when the bell jangled for the first time that night and in walked a smartly dressed man. Leather jacket, biker gloves and distressed black jeans. The fashion student in you nodded approvingly. Not bad. In fact, the outfit looked a little too good for the night-time and the gloves with the tips cut-off probably did nothing to protect his fingers from the cold. Your eyes trailed up to look at the man in question and –

Oh. It was the cute guy from before. At that moment he turned to look at you and you were oddly unable to look away. Instead the both of you waited to see who would break the stare first and it ended up being him. His gaze fell onto the top you were wearing and he frowned a little, ducking into an aisle when he noticed you noticing him.

Curious, you looked down at your clothes and – oh my god – you had on leather jacket too. You frowned – it couldn’t be mere coincidence, could it? When you looked back up you realized the boy was watching you through the cracks in the shelves and wasn’t even trying to hide it anymore. You should have been creeped out but all you felt was a surge of annoyance so you glared back instead. On any other occasion that would have been a wrong move – an idiotic one, a dangerous one, one you wouldn’t have taken for fear of the stranger getting provoked by your rude manner – but there was nothing threatening about this boy and something told you he couldn’t hurt you even if he wanted to.

Feigning nonchalance the boy went back to his shopping, picking up a couple bags of chips and another few cups of ramen, different flavours this time. Then he stopped by the Drinks section and bent down to retie his laces. On a whim you decided to check your laces too – the one on your left shoe had come undone, while the boy’s was on his right.

When you turned back to him, the boy was focused on you. You hadn’t realized you had stood up and gone around the counter to see what he was doing. You pretended to be interested in something else and went back to your seat. From the corner of your eye you saw the boy smirk. Well.

You didn’t even know him but he was ticking you off in all the wrong places. You took off your jacket so at least you wouldn’t have to be dressed the same way as his cocky ass. Unfortunately when he came over to pay, you realized he had also taken his jacket off. Then you saw it. Your stomach plunged and your heart started beating wildly.

You knew you should be rational about such things but it couldn’t just be coincidence anymore. He was wearing a shirt with the exact same design as yours but in inverse colours – a doodle of a smiling man with lines for eyes and squiggly hair. This made the boy smirk even more.

“Six dollars, fifteen cents,” you said coolly, handing him the plastic bag. It hardly even surprised you that he had a gold bracelet around his wrist and another ring around his index finger, the same as you did. You quickly hid your hand behind your back. The boy left with a hint of amusement in his eyes.

It went much the same for the following weeks. He didn’t come every day but when he did he was always wearing something similar thing to you, no matter how drastically you changed your style. One time you had been so frustrated you asked your roommate to pick out the ugliest thing in your closet for you. It turned out to be a fuzzy yellow sweater you had gotten for Christmas but never wore. You gave it a classy finish (what kind of fashion student would you be if you left the house like a slob?) with a nice watch and stupid Spongebob bag you got from a flea market, just to piss off the Universe.

That night he came on an orange bike wearing the same yellow sweater and an identical watch. His phone with its new Spongebob cover stuck out from his back pocket. You huffed. The Universe has gotten creative, it seems.

He didn’t leave immediately and instead circled the store a couple of times, doing tricks on the bike whenever he passed by the front where you were. On the inside you were secretly impressed. But whenever he glanced over eagerly at you, you would just roll your eyes making him laugh. He gave a giant wave before cycling off into the night.

The boy was soon a familiar presence and it was slowly becoming clear exactly what you two were, but you didn’t want to give in that easily. On occasion you would be nice and allow him a small smile which he seemed content with, leaving the store with a grin brighter than you had ever seen. It was ridiculous how long you two spent dancing around each other but you suspected neither of you were ready yet to put a name to whatever this was, so you just let him circle around you and for now that was enough.

“Hyung, we have to talk about this.”

“Not now Chan I’m busy.”

“No, NOW hyung!” The younger boy tore the console away from Soonyoung, ignoring the older boy’s protests as his game character fell into a pit and got torn to bits. Chan jabbed at the screen. “See that? That’s what I’ll do to you if we don’t talk about your habit.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Soonyoung crossed his arms and sulked petulantly, although he very well knew why Chan was angry. In response the younger gestured wildly to the growing pile of snacks on the kitchen counter.

“I’m taking about this hyung! You’ve bought way too many snacks for the both of us to finish!”

A head popped up from the pile, smiling widely. “Don’t worry, that’s what we’re here for.”

“Not helping, Jun-hyung,” Chan deadpanned.

Another head popped up from the pile. Jihoon was already munching on a bag of chips, another smaller packet stuffed into his pocket. “Hey if it means I get free food for the rest of my life I’ll gladly support Soonyoung never manning up and telling his soulmate they are soulmates.”

“And that is another thing we have to talk about.” Chan whipped back around still frowning as Soonyoung tried to melt into the couch. “Not only are you wasting all our money, you still don’t even know their name yet!”

Soonyoung mumbled something in response.

“Sorry, I can’t hear you, what was that hyung?” Chan prodded obnoxiously.

“I said they’re not ready yet!” Soonyoung burst out, face red with embarrassment.

“They’re not ready, or you’re not ready?”

“Does it matter?”

Jihoon rolled his eyes. “Of course it does!” He went round the counter and plopped onto the couch, stretching is legs out across Soonyoung’s lap. “It was so annoying for me when Jun wouldn’t just open his mouth and admit we were soulmates.”

Jun gaped. “HEY you could’ve said something too!”

“I asked for your name, number AND asked you on the first date. The least you could’ve done was confronting the soulmate thing.” Jihoon turned back to Soonyoung conspiratorially. “In the end he didn’t even have to do much because we touched and caused a blackout in the restaurant.”

“I TOLD YOU NOT TO TELL ANYONE THAT–”

“He was yelling and hanging on to me and made the whole thing worst.”

“DUDE NOT COOL.” Jun and tried to lunge and grab Jihoon but the smaller boy was faster, the two of them now engaged in a game of circling each other around the couch.

“So in conclusion, tell them first before something embarrassing happens and they get to dangle it like this over your head.”

Chan and Soonyoung watched the two in awe.

“That’s great advice..?” was all Soonyoung could manage before Jihoon was running out of the dorm with Jun chasing quickly behind him.

The room was suddenly quiet.

Chan shook his head slowly. “That was weird.”

“Tell me about it,” Soonyoung dragged a hand down his face. “Ugh it’s not like I don’t want to! It’s…”

“You’re afraid of commitment.”

“What no-!” he spluttered.

“Don’t lie.” Chan’s face softened. “You did just watch your ex-boyfriend talk about how he met his soulmate.”

Soonyoung coloured but didn’t say anything. The younger boy patted his thigh and settled next to him. “But from what you’ve told me, the person waiting back at the convenience store is your soulmate so it’s about time you claimed them, right?”

“But what if they’re not my soulmate?”

“Then apologize, tell them it was a mistake and wait for your actual one to come along.”

“But I– OWW!” There was suddenly blood dripping down Soonyoung’s finger, dripping onto the floor below.

Chan’s eyes widened in shock. “Hyung? How did that happen!”

“I don’t know! It just did, it fucking hurts–” Soonyoung was hit by a sudden realization. “Oh my god it’s Y/N.”

“Who’s Y/N?” Chan gasped. “Wait, is that their name?”

“What?” The cut was aching too badly and all Soonyoung could think about was that you were hurt somehow. What if you were in trouble? Worry surged through him at the thought and he rushed to put his shoes on and get to you.

“Convenience store person! Y/N is their name right? How do you know it if you’ve never asked?”

“I–I don’t know!” Stupidly Soonyoung jumped to the worst conclusion possible and figured that maybe the Universe had kindly gifted him with your name because that was the only thing he would have of you by the end of today. That only made him put on his jacket faster, his wounded finger dripping blood everywhere, clean carpets be damned.

“Wait, hyung where are you going!”

“To the convenience store!”

“Why? We have Band-Aids at home!” But Soonyoung was already stumbling downstairs to his bike, racing towards you.

The gushing blood was making everything messy and gripping the handlebar was painful but Soonyoung managed by leaning forward on his arms and praying he could keep himself balance like that. The streets were relatively empty due to the time of night for which Soonyoung was grateful. He was too distracted to think about anything else other than making it to you and traffic would have just been a hazard.

When he got to the store the lights were all brightly lit and you were behind the counter. He rushed inside without thinking, “Are you okay?!”

You looked up, startled, “W-what?”

“Your finger! Is it okay, are you okay?!” When he looked down at your hand there was already an animal sticker bandage wrapped neatly around your finger. He was so relieved he almost cried. He didn’t but came close to, breathing a huge sigh.

“You’re okay,” he said without realizing. You were looking at him weirdly but he didn’t care. You were okay and that was all that mattered. He looked you in the eyes and smiled brightly. “You’re not hurt.”

“No…” You gestured to his hand. “But you are.”

Suddenly the implications of his actions came crashing down on him and Soonyoung blushed wildly, trying to hide his finger behind his back. He didn’t even bring his wallet to buy anything from here. You watched him with mild amusement.

“Stay here,” you said.

You went to the back and came out with a first aid kit, placing it on the counter between you two.

Soonyoung quickly refused. “You don’t have to do that, I’ll be fine–”

“Shut up and hold your hand out,” you demanded. His flushed deepened but he did as you told, pointing his finger out so it would be easier for you to clean it.

You knew exactly how you had gotten the cut on your own hand – with a rusty pen knife while trying to open a box of Cheetos packets – but you weren’t sure whether his cut would have been formed the same way, so you treated his wound much the same way as you treated your own.

He hissed a little when you poured warm water over the cut but stayed still as you dabbed it dry with the cotton. You rubbed a little antiseptic in with a cotton bud then wrapped a Band-Aid around his finger, an animal print one from the same box where you had taken yours. As you pulled away your fingers brushed. The lights flickered then went off entirely.

Under the dim light of the streetlamps flooding in from outside, you two looked at each other and laughed.

“I guess we can’t say we didn’t see the signs,” Soonyoung chuckled sheepishly.

“I guess not.” He was a shy mess, eyes drifting everywhere but on you so you said, “You’re dressed better today.”

He had on a grey sweater over a white shirt, black pants and a red ribbon around the collar. His hair was swept back and dishevelled, like he had run his hands a few times through it and blown back by the wind.

He grinned. “I could say the same for you.”

You had on something similar except the red was pinned to your chest and there was a black bell choker around your neck.

The silence that followed was charged but not uncomfortable. You smiled cheekily.

“So,” you placed your hands on the counter, facing him. “I take it you are me, soulmate?”

“And I am you,” he returned.
