summer 2020: thoughts

stuff this season i’ve finished:

made in abyss: dawn of the deep soul. oh man it’s been so long that i forgot how brutal this particular arc was. it’s so heart wrenching i had to close my eyes a few times :’)) i just want these kids to go on fun adventures and be happy

fugou keiji: balance unlimited. well. what i expected: buddy cop series with mysteries and crimes; what i got: the funky slice of life (mis)adventures of a cop and a rich child. they tried to raise the stakes with backstories and angst but it didn’t feel... very serious? it just had chill vibes all the way through instead (& i love the rest of the team!!) but hey, the memes and fan thirst in the fandom were hilarious

maou gakuin / misfit of demon king academy. surprisingly better than i expected! there were a few hidden charms, like the ways anos flexed his op-ness, his fanclub (their song: ballad >>>> pop), kanon, anos’ pure fluffy parents, slick magic circles, kanon, magic circles, kanon... plus it did a good job in yanking heartstrings at the right moments :’>

the god of high school. i didn’t read the webtoon so i’ve no idea if it’s a ‘accurate’ adaption. tbh i lost the plot halfway through but you know what, sometimes the animation and artstyle and music and visual effects and fight cuts are so nice and breathtaking that you don’t mind that suddenly jojo stands(?) are appearing in the sky and characters are getting possessed(?) by gods... or something, who knows what even happened ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

deca-dence. i love this show so much :’)) it’s an all-package deal: deep worldbuilding, fun characters, found family (!!) bonds, quirky sci-fi mecha and dungeon monster combination, the emotional roller coaster and best of all, that 👏 beautiful 👏 ending 👏 i’m very satisfied

great pretender. scams and heists and big $$$ theft galore. a really fun series that explores the pasts and growth of our main 4 and i’ll protect them to the ends of the earth. it’s super visually stunning too, like the color palettes? the background textures?? how they depicted all the different landscapes of LA/SG/LDN/JP?? *chef’s kiss* also the humor/comedy in this is fantastic, makoto “crime→decent job→repeat” edamura is the best

Alright, time to dump my thoughts here about RWBY Volume 6!

Definitely my favorite Volume so far. The first one where Team RWBY is back together in the new artstyle, and they all look gorgeous. The animation this time around looked wonderful, and it helped the story tremendously to have more access to different models and expressions for the characters so the story could be more show and less tell.  The general consensus seems to say this volume was amazing at the beginning, and then faded into decent in the last five episodes. I’d actually pinpoint the problem at the last episode, but I will say the Cordovin “arc” was poorly paced and did not help with the character development at all. This arc entirely existed so we could get a Shadow of the Colussus fight, and that’s an issue when the arc takes up a precious four episodes of time to introduce and complete.  That said, I’m going to try and separate this into different arcs and espouse the merits/demerits of each

1- Train 6/10

 Cool fight scene, nice to see QRWBY fighting together. Also did well by introducing Maria as crazy but with common sense, and sowing more seeds of doubt about Ozpin.

2-Ozpin Backstory Arc 10/10

This is my favorite arc in the show and one of the best done in the entire show. And I’m not saying that because of the lore dump, that’s nebulous.  So the episode where Ozpin actually loses his cool and the lamp was done amazingly well. Even when losing his composure, Ozpin is very quick to try and focus on the task at hand and be pragmatic about this situation. Not to mention, Yang’s constant prodding is very unwarranted and it shows how Raven’s seeds of doubts mixed with Yang’s temper have brought out the worst in her. Oscar, for as little screen time as he gets in this series, also has one of his biggest defining character moments by willfully defying Ozpin and airing his thoughts to everyone else. Oscar hasn’t had much character establishment. We know he’s not exactly fond of Ozpin just because of the current situation, but he’s not overtly antagonistic either. However, he was having none of Ozpin’s shit the moment Ozpin willfully continued to lie to Ruby. So the actually backstory. Holy shit. Not only does it humanize Ozpin and make it clear that this guy does not have all the answers, but it also gives far more complexity to our main villain. You’re not meant to sympathize with her now, but you understand how Salem became a vindictive witch of the Grimm. She’s been warped by centuries of grief and a lack of self-determination, all compounded when Ozpin tears away her happy ending from her when he tries to steal their children away. Also, now the story finally has a freaking endgame! This backstory helps contextualize the journey of our heroes and what they’re doing. It wasn’t outwardly spoken, but the message was clear from Ozpin’s actions. Humanity is fucked if the gods come back to judge it. Our heroes don’t have to be opposed to Salem’s ideals or plans(whatever those are), it’s just that her methodology of gathering the four relics will kill everything because humanity doesn’t have its shit together. I will admit that Jinn’s genie nature and the obvious specificity of the “Can I kill Salem?” were a bit too on the nose, but hopefully the series won’t string out that plot line for more than a volume.

3- The Apathy Arc 8/10

Goddamn if there was ever a time for RWBY to do a horror arc, it chose the literal best setting and time to do so. Ozpin is gone, everyone is in shock and feeling betrayed (especially Qrow and Yang), and a blizzard is fast coming. Everyone knew immediately that something was wrong just based on the muted colors of the house and the Ruby’s mention of how everything is abandoned rather than destroyed. The dead bodies in the beds were chilling and one of the most graphic things this show’s ever done. From there, the viewer immediately is screaming “GET OUT OF THERE”, but the cast legitimately has no other place to go unless they want to brave a blizzard. Maria was a very welcome addition to the cast, and this arc really let her shine as a dry-witted voice of reason. Allowing her eccentricity to reveal the true nature of Bartleby’s farm was done very well and nothing about her exposition or behavior felt forced here.  Qrow’s alcoholism getting worse was a very interesting character analysis because we see how much Ruby hates this, but she can’t bring herself to reprimand him. It also shows how much his broken trust in Oz has affected him, which is a wonderful lead-in from the previous arc. When the cast is affected by the apathy, it is one of the best examples of tone through visuals and voice acting that I have ever seen. Nothing is technically wrong, but things are very off. Their pupils are just a bit too big for comfort, their voices are a bit too dry and emotionless. Yang’s suggestions make sense for her emotional state after Ozpin’s betrayal, but it seems irresponsible to throw their responsibilities away for someone else to find. The actual Apathy fight itself is a nice horror movie conclusion, with no actual jumpscares, but terrifying imagery, all ending with Blake simply accepting death before we get Silver Eyes out of the situation and onto the next arc. Good conclusion by confirming that Yes Maria was a SEW as a lead in to her backstory and also in jumpstarting that plotline after ignoring it for two volumes.

3.5- Maria’s Backstory Won’t go into this much but all the character designs were gorgeous and it helps establish Maria very well and I love that Tock the Croc’s kill timer in universe was the exact same irl :D

4- Argus Pre Cordovin 5/10 (good score, means the show did as well as expected)

This arc was a good breathing point to compare to the intensity of the episodes up to this point. Terra and Saphron were adorable with their little baby and the cast’s reunion was sweet. Team JNR’s reaction to Ozpin was done really well. Jaune’s always been very prickly to Qrow about this mission, so it makes sense that he’d be super pissed about Oz lying about the mission and leaving. Nora and Ren’s anger was a nice addition. They weren’t ornaments to Jaune’s emotional breakdown, they were struggling with this information as well. Oscar’s disappearance was a dick move on behalf of the writers, because everything was set up for him to finally confront the nature of the person inside him and his eventual merge with that person. But they skim over this for a fakeout with a nice speech where Oscar just accepts the death of his personhood without resistance. This would have been not a dick move if the show’s creators didn’t leave us with a “Oscar has dissapeared” cliffhanger for two weeks. Jaune meeting Pyrrha’s mom and talking to Ren/Nora about his issues was wonderful and done super well. They really needed that discussion and I’m very glad the show finally had it.

5- Cordovin Arc 3/10

Haha little lady in a shoe with a napoleon complex. cool. why was this arc the finale fight? No seriously, the Leviathan didn’t get a fight, he just got a silver eye debuff that led to a one shot kill. Cordovin is the last fight in the series and it’s... underwhelming. Not that the animation or choreography is bad, that’s all gorgeous. But the story and characters screech to a grinding halt to focus on this fight for three episodes. No one is getting developed, The plot is just waffling so we can get a full 13 episodes before we move onto Atlas. This battle should have lasted one episode, and then have multiple episodes to focus on Silver Eyes and the leviathan. Hell, don’t even make a fight. Just have Team RWBY succeed at turning off the radar, at which a Leviathan grimm comes and starts destroying the city because no one anticipated it. Adam can still come and distract Blake/Yang from the fight, and QRWBYORNJM can have their big shadow of the colossus fight. Cordovin’s character is also woefully simplistic, which would be fine! If they didn’t give her a last minute redemption that felt horribly out of touch from the rest of her actions. It was a writer’s asspull to get everyone to Atlas, which I’m thankful that they didn’t stall on, but it could have been done so much better.

5.5 Adam Arc 9/10

God this arc was amazing. Adam’s character was never complex. His motivations were always clear, and his M.O. was rather run of the mill abuse perpetrator. Blake has a reason to sympathize with him, but he ultimately used her and made her feel worthless so he could feel more powerful. However, this arc is such a cathartic and important emotional moment for Blake and Yang. Yang finally faces the source of her trauma head on, and she’s scared. Adam has taken away a part of her before, and she’s not prepared to lose anything again. But Yang’s character hasn’t changed, she still reacts to problems with “punch IT” and Blake validating her strength and comforting her  was so good. Blake has gotten over Adam, as evidenced by her actions in Volume 5, but that doesn’t mean that the scars of what he’s done don’t still affect her. I’m unsure of it’s intentionally, but the scars that Adam leaves on Blake aren’t noticeable. They hurt, they cripple her, but the cuts are on her hip, a place that would usually be covered by her coat or her shirt. It’s a good meta textual reference of how abuse usually hurts people in ways that can’t be seen by others. Also, Adam’s face reveal was probably the best possible thing they could have done with Adam’s face. After so long of making him a monster with a grimm mask, we finally see the source of his anger,and the source of Blake’s symapthy. Branded right on the eye by the Schnee Dust company. Ouch. This is not a moment meant to make US sympathize with him, that flew out the window when it was revealed that he actively abused Blake before she left him. But this moment is an important reminder that Adam is not a Grimm. His brand of monstrosity isn’t as simple as a being of pure destruction, it’s much seedier and harder to catch until he’s already in a position to kill you. Yang and Blake’s duo stab through the heart with the broken remains of Gamboul shroud was one of the best moments in this entire series and I don’t have anything to say other than that I paused the video when it happened and just stared. Blake’s reaction after killing Adam is also perfect for her. She loved Adam. She definitely doesn’t anymore, but he still was able to get under her skin and remind her of everything she hated about herself. Which is why when Yang comforts her, they add that all important piece of dialogue about Yang knowing that Blake won’t break her promise. Yang isn’t putting herself in a position of power over Blake, she is comforting her as an equal that respects her and her strength. That, and the fact Adam and Yang’s semblances are near identical, goes really far to show how much healthier Yang and Blake’s relationship is than Blake and Adam’s.

6- The Leviathan/ Silver Eyes 3/10

Gonna jump around a bit but silver eyes were finally explained in this arc. As currently presented Silver eyes are... terrible. They cut all tension out of the story when the main threat of the series can be solved by happy thoughts and puppy dog tails. Salem just becomes a non-issue if all of her forces can be killed by Ruby thinking happy thoughts. I’m hoping that some sort of catch or consequence will come later. Like: Using the power of the Light diminishes your own light, and therefore would give Ruby more destructive impulses because she simply has fewer protective impulses to draw upon. Ruby doesn’t even get tired when using the dang things. As they currently stand, Silver eyes will cut the tension out of any Grimm encounter. In the post credits scene, we see Salem making her flying monkeys. Hooray, wicked witch of the west. Problem. Why should this have any meaning? Ruby can just kill all of those Grimm at once. This doesn’t negate every conflict in the series, there’s still the problem of the asshole humans/faunus, but the show’s main villain and her main method of attack are just nullified now. The one good thing about this is Maria’s confirmation that no one knows wtf silver eyes are. Qrow and Ozpin know about them, but Maria’s explnation strongly imply that no one actually knows how they work. Oz and Qrow likely just knew that Summer had the power to kill Grimm and just didn’t know how she did it. This makes the previous volume’s act of ignoring the things at least slightly more palatable.  So the Leviathan. Ruby’s conclusion to the Silver Eyes arc by activating them all on her own. This was mostly just a montage to redraw scenes from the show and get a Summer Rose face reveal. There wasn’t a story purpose, and the character purpose was very thin because we really don’t learn anything about Ruby here. We know she’s haunted by Penny and Pyrrha’s deaths. We know she enjoyed her time at Beacon and likes her teammates. We know she loves her mother and looks up to her. There’s nothing new presented here about her, she just has to go through a series recap to activate the eye death lasers.  Hate to end it on such a negative note, but I really do love this volume wholeheartedly, including the parts I rated low. Steam/PC: The Charming Empire Review

Final Grade: D+/C- TL;DR: Not great. OST was very mediocre. A little above average visuals. Storytelling was terrible. Voice Acting (VA) was the only saving grace for this game. UI is terrible/no improvement from the mobile version. Characters were great but development was non-existent in many of the routes. Couldn’t stomach the game to play through everyone’s Good ending…I just did Happy Endings which were still just mediocre ends.

Route Order I followed: Yoshimine, Togawa, Tanba, Sera, Soshi.

Route Order I recommend: Yoshimine, Tanba, Sera, Togawa, Soshi Though it honestly doesn’t matter since none of the storylines are that closely related anyways….I’d say Soshi for the beginning or end since his has the most “answers” in it. His route is pretty painful to save for last though….

Here are the route reviews: Ratings for the routes in this game will be actually higher than expected. I'm not saying these are "good" routes but the overall game is pretty kusoge (shit-game) so I'm rating them based on the low standards the overall game has set already. That being said, if you're use to fully fleshed out otome games, which I'm spoiled with...since I tend to play console based ones and not mobile based games, this game is pretty garbage. However, if you just want some light fluffy writing with tolerable visuals and a simple UI, this game is perfect. I originally played this game cause Tsuda Kenjiro VAs onii-chan... but holy shit after the first route I wasn't sure if I could make it through all the routes.

Luckily all the routes are pretty short....thank god. I didn't bother with the Normal ends cause the lackluster CGs with the shitty auto mode really made me want to kill myself while playing. Without further ado.. Here are the individual route reviews. Each written after completing the Good end.

Yoshimine 6/10

Angry Tsundere Shota >_> Uhhh def not my type. So I chose this to be my first route cause I saw the character pictures and this looked like no.1 not my type I tend to play the routes I don't think I'll like first then end with the best. He's an okay tsun-shota type. He def has some cute moments but it was really hard to get into his character since the kusoge didnt really give him good character development His idle sprite also looks really awkward too so that didn't help. Overall his VA really made up for the shitty character writing he had and semi brought his character to life. Oh yeah... the plot "twist" at the end...was so obvious.... holy shit.

Wtf is this idle..... something looks off....

Togawa 7/10

Okay... from what I see so far... this game is mainly a setup for the Soshi route at the end... I'm kinda okay with this. This route was sweet due to the bachelor being such a sweet cinnamon roll. Luckily his sprite wasn't as awkward to look at. His CGs were pretty weak as well. I think there was like 1 good CG. Augghh this kusoge with the shitty character development. I'm glad this character had some "history" with the MC though that made the lack of character development better. There were some interesting translation differences IDK were meant to be in there like switching black tea to just Earl Grey tea.

Tanba 8/10

So I really like Tanba Toki's design and the fact that his VA is also Prompto from FFXV's VA is even better.The VA suits him really well and his character development is on point. There was some questionable OST choices for certain scenes... there was "happy" music when you were helping the rebels... like whhaatt? THEN THE MAIN THING THAT MADE ME UPSET. NO CG FOR THE CONFESSION PART HOLY SHIT IM SO PISSED. THIS GAME IS KUSOGE WTH D: Then after the confession scene theres an awkward Kiss CG which look sssoooo weirrdd >_>

Overall though, this is my favorite route so far. He had the best writing so far. I think the fact that the MC doesn't get to be with him all the time really helps. There was def. slight character development written in for both the MC and Tanba. The trend of setting up for Soshi is still very prominent in this route...anddd still no connection to any other characters expect for Soshi. I really hope Soshi's route is good to make up for all the rest of these mediocre to shitty routes. (Spoiler��it didn’t) Sera's route next.

Sera 7/10

Alright, I'd be lying if I was going to say that I didn't enjoy this route. ITS STILL A TERRIBLE FUCKING ROUTE. Writing is very mediocre and storyline/development is downright garbage. BUT I fucking love Sera's character trope. Stoic quiet big guy who's actually a fucking cinnamon roll inside. He also holds the knight card as in he must protecc. Seriously, if he had glasses he would be perfect for me. HOWEVER, the VAing in the beginning was a little forced. I think Takuya (the VA) was trying to force himself to have a deeper voice at times and it didn't sound good. Then there was the sprite of Sera... wtf is this hand shit going on his idle sprite?!??

Besides that shitty idle hand...I love his character design. A LOT of the scenes (including the ending) were not satisfying at all....they could've done so much more with his scenes. The sewing scene pissed me off the most....WTF IS THAT "he said thanks" end scene. The best part of this route is that Kagamitsu Togawa actually exists in this and Yoshimine Kei is hinted at...finaaaalllly other characters being shown. I'm also glad of Soshi's end in this route compared to others. Lots of good but lots of bad in this route.... Soshi for last bois.

Soshi 6/10

I'm. so. sad. I was super hyped for this last route cause there Soshi was the only route that was hinted at in ALL the other routes. This route was a whole lot of disappointment though :( In fact... Togawa was kinda the only saving grace of this route. Arrgggh I tried so hard to like this route I really did but the story telling was soooo bad. I mean after playing the other routes you kinda are just waiting for the "twist" that was shown before...so the precursor to it is literally like WHY?! WHY YOU GOTTA BE LIKE THAT SOSHI KUN?!Also there was some fucking weird ass development or something messed up in the translation.... WHERE THE FUCK DID THE TEA PART COME FROM!? DID I MISS SOMETHING!?!?!AS IN (Spoiler alert)

WHY THE FUCK DID SHE TRY TO KILL HIM?! I'm sorry this is the only major spoiler I had to mention cause I was so confused when it happened. Then the writing got even weirder when the "Happy end" scene played where she literally started to call him "Onii-chan" and she's been calling him Soshi the whole time.... even Soji at some point IDK why....top of that...why the fuck was Soshi allowed to do what he was allowed to do at the end like no you were still the ruler howwww?....This route was just full of weird plot holes and shit that just didn't make sense. Since the route was very shitty to begin with the CGs were equally lackluster. Boring scenes got boring CGs except for the last CG but by then I was just so sad and done with the game. Tsuda Kenjiro's VAing talents were wasted on this kusoge and kuso-chara.

The Pros:

Artstyle/Character Designs- I really enjoyed a lot of the Character Designs. In fact it was the VAing and Character designs that made me eventually pick up this game. The art is vibrant is really nice to look at. Sadly some of the CGs weren’t the best of quality and some sprites could be improved. However, overall the art is very pleasant and well suited for the time period it is set in.

OST- OST was decent too. For a mobile game that ported to PC. I was decently surprised that even after trudging through so many routes the OST didn’t get annoying or repetitive. Granted there were some questionable timing on when to play certain tracks but the songs themselves were still pretty good.

VAing- So many good voice actors involved in this game. Tsuda Kenjiro is literally my favorite VA and they had the voice of Prompto too? Man good shit. The VAing did not disappoint. They def. made the game 100x better. If this game didn’t have VAing I would’ve been so sad and I don’t think I could’ve played through it all.

The Cons:

UI/UI Functionality- My BIGGEST GRIPE about this game. I get it shitty story/development, budget art, etc. BUT WHEN YOU CANT EVEN GET YOUR UI TO FUNCTION/LOOK GOOD?! COME ON! The UI is directly a port from the mobile game so it looks clunky and jenky. Not only that Auto doesn’t work as auto normally does in otoges. It acts more of a skip button which was SO FRUSTRATING. I sometimes multitask when I play otome games like check my phone/send messages to people, so I love having it on auto especially with VAing. Additionally I don’t know if it was only a bug on my game but my settings would NEVER save when I would start a new route… holy that pissed me off.

Development of Characters- Do I even have to touch on this? There was little to no development of the bachelors at all… Most of their characters were just thrown together and you were to just nod your head at some of their “developments” as in they would say “I’m partially a cat” and your character would go “Oh cool”. End of story sequence. I wanted to just punch the screen sometimes…

Tasteless CGS- Artstyle==cool. CGs==terrible. The CGs were at really weird timing and sometimes I wished there was a certain CG at a certain time but there wasn’t. I don’t know if its because there wasn’t enough memory to put in CGs for the mobile release or what not, but regardless the game did not have CGs at good times. Leading the CGs to be at awkward moments, except for the “core” CGS aka the “meeting” CGs and the “ending” CGs.

Main Character- She’s weak willed and not a fun character to follow. She just takes things as is, except maybe in Tanba’s route. I hated “being” her… I wanted to make choices at times when the games doesn’t give you a choice.

Bottom Line:

This game is just pretty garbage. I just want to move on my life and pretend that Tsuda Kenjiro wasn’t VAing in this game. If you’re thinking of buying this game..buy it on sale…like 50% or more sale or some shit. The routes are short and not fun to play through. There are def. better choices of otome games out there for PC. Of course not a lot of them are voiced by cool Japanese voice actors but this one is pretty shitty you might as well pass. I would highly recommend Nightshade on Steam or if you’re looking for something more comedy-esque and risqué… Fashioning Little Miss Lonesome. For good artstyle I’ve heard good things about OZ-Mafia too. Or just save your money up for a PSTV for those sweet sweet PSVITA games. ;)

-Dusts off blog- HELLLLLO 2017! Nothing like a New Year and a fresh, new anime season that makes me wanna become active in the anime world once again. This time, it’s special. From Jan. 12-April 11th I will be living in Japan for the very first time! In Akihabara! Anime central! Beyond excited :) Maybe I’ll see promotional stuff for current anime while I’m there? We shall see. 

Anywho, the new shows start airing tomorrow so I figured I’d take a crack at the PV’s and see let you know what I’ll be anticipating the most.

Masamune-kun’s Revenge

Japan hates fat people: THE ANIME! No seriously, has there ever been a fat character in anime that wasn’t a big, fat (no pun intended) joke? Screw you Japan. Also, when being a fat child is your biggest trauma? First. World. Problems. Anyway, this sounds like a pretty generic but watchable anime, the art is bland and shiny and it looks like there will be plenty of pretty girls vying for “I’m skinny now so I’m hot”’s attention. Will watch and grumble about.

Urara Meirochou

Is the Order a Rabbit? With Psychics! That’s the vibe I get anyway. The animation’s really cute and colorful and the main girl looks like IA from vocaloids lol. Not sure why everyone has cat ears in the PV. Excited to see what “Koume who is a fan of Western culture” is like. 

Seiren

Amagami SS Plus Plus -The Sequel of the Sequel! Oh man, I actually really like shows like this. Harem-like shows where the characters are more realistic (you can tell by the tame hair colors lol). I don’t understand why it says “three heroines” but the trailer shows 6 girls? I wanna know sleepy-eyed girl’s story! I hope this is an omnibus-style show like Amagami, it’s more pure when it’s one girl at a time.

Fuuka

Complaining About Millenials: The Anime! No seriously, that’s what I got from the description: “The battle between a romance started through technology and one NOT started through technology.” Riveting stuff. Not looking forward to this one, I hated its predecessor, Suzuka. Suzuka was an anime about how amazing Suzuka, the main girl, was when really she was bland and (imo) not even attractive? Also, the ecchi mixed with the shiny artstyle feels wrong to me. Like if 5 cm per second had panty shots. Just wrong. 

Youjo Senki

??????? Did they use a random plot generator for this anime? My initial thought is that I hate the promo artwork. She looks like a weird bobblehead. As for the PV...uhhhhh? Flying Imperial Army Sorcerer’s...riiiiight. Looks like a storu they could have done without a loli but then they threw in a loli to appeal to otaku. Also, she’s inexplicably Russian, kay. 

Minami Kamakura Koukou Joshi Jitensha-Bu

Moe Spin-off of Yowamushi Pedal. I know it’s a completely different sport but this just feels like a rehash of Baku-On!! to me. Generic cute girls doing cute things anime probably but looks like something I could enjoy. I like the design choices so far...

Schoolgirl Strikers

When has adapting a mobile game into an anime ever worked? Never? Exactly. I’m already bored, they weren’t even trying with this plot. 

Ao no Exorcist: Kyoto Fujouou-Hen

OH SNAP. TIME TO JUMP ON THE HYPE TRAIN. I mean, wow, it was 4 years ago that I watched that first season, what a long time to wait. Now I’m not a HUGE Ao no Exorcist fan, I think it’s pretty generic-shounen but I’m just really happy/excited for the fans. Plus, this season is supposed to go back to the manga so it’s gotta be better than the filler-riddled season 1. I’ll give it a go!

SpiritPact

“Unfortunately he was hit by a car and became a ghost” A+ synposis writing, 10 outta 10, Good Job! Lots of psychic-y, exorcist-y shows this season huh? This one is a ghost teaming up with an exorcist...first thought is...there’s no girl. I’m guessing fujoshi shipping will be involved with this one. Just a hunch.

Demi-chan wa Kataritai 

Wholesome-er Monmusu!? HELL YEAH! I lover monster girls/boys but they’re always over-sexualized to the point that I get turned off. This looks like it will be a more moe, slice-of-life monster girl series I hope. -crosses fingers- It’s cute that they’re called “Demis” and nice that they’re keeping it simple with only three main monster girls (vampire, dullahan, and succubus). Erm, well with a succubus there’s bound to be ecchi...Please don’t be over-the-top ;-; 

Chain Chronicle

Not another mobile game adaptation. Fantasy plots like these are not fun to watch, they are made for games and games only. Main character looks hilariously generic. The only thing that got me a little excited in the PV is that this series has faeries. The logo looks like a Final Fantasy one...

eIDLIVE

Space Patrol Luluco as a generic shounen show. JUSTICE! The synopsis for this anime has way too much going on in it. He can hear voices AND he’s “the chosen one” at a space police station? AND his classmate’s also in the space police. How about just picking one of those plot points and rolling with it? Like, what’s next: AND he’s psychic, AND he knew his classmate all along he just has amnesia! This sounds silly. Nice music in the PV tho. 

Idol Jihen

AKB0048 Take 2 - 2017 Edition. No seriously, this is the exact same plot of AKB0048...which might be good cuz I loved that show lol. The only thing new is idols having political parties which sounds kinda...stupidly awesome. We shall see. I’ve been hurt by idol anime before. 

Little Witch Academia 

sHOW OF THE YEAR CONFIRMED 2017. Studio Trigger: YES. Harry Potter-esque: YES. Amazing design choices: YES. Will I be watching?: YESSSSSS. 

Gabriel DropOut

Hima-tenshi: Umaru-chan! I mean basically. A perfect student who becomes super lazy and obsessed with gaming? I’m a sucker for shows like this with otaku female protags, gotta say. Throw in angels and demons and I’m set to watch. Like I said, I love monster girls :3c

ACCA

Most Boring Synopsis of the year Award Goes to...Seriously, the plot description for this told me nothing. However, I watched the PV and it looks like it could be interesting. It has a mature, adult-tone and verrrry interesting character design. I might watch it just for that. Plus, cool uniforms! :D

Handshakers

Not Another Absolute Duo Rehash. I swear, these new shows are competing to see who can be the shiniest. Also, protag looks like he’s from Dangan Ronpa lol. I’ll give this show a chance, with a generic fight school plot it all rides on how likable the characters are. I tend to like fighting shows where people have to work together and utilize team work. It usually forces characters to have good chemistry/development. 

Kemono Friends

IS THAT A FENNEC FOX GIRL!? The plot sounds really contrived but I don’t care cuz cute animal girls! :D Will they act like animals? Will there be creepy bestiality-esque relationships? Does that one girl have no neck? I will stay tuned... 

Akiba’s Trip

It’s funny cuz I’m gonna be living in Akihabara for 3 months...This anime is based on a game where you attack people til there clothes fall off. Watching the PV it looks kinda awesome actually, it reminds me of Ben-To. This kind of anime that’s self-aware about how ridiculous its premise is can be nice. The character design looks really interesting and, just like the game, it seems it will have equal-opportunity stripping lol. This will be really fun to watch while in Akiba.

Kobayashi-san Chi no Maidragon 

Why does this anime have so much hate/love on tumblr? It’s a controversial show already but it just seems like your typical monster-girl, slice-of-life, ecchi. Nothing to see here folks, move along. Personally, I think it looks really cute? Especially the main relationship (gay). Plus we’ll get to see a legit dragon every now and then which is A-okay in my book. I wanna know the other girls’ stories too, they cute.

Marginal #4

Nah. Who do these idol-boy shows even appeal to? Fujoshi? When you try too hard to make all the guys in your series ~sexy~ it almost always backfires if you ask me. Plus, there is just such an over-saturation of shows identical to this one. What makes this one any different?

Kuzu no Honkai

WE. NEED. MORE. SEINEN. AND. JOSEI. ANIME. This one looks promising, mostly because I like the manga’s artstyle. The plot actually sounds pretty similar to Toradora so I can only assume the main “fake” lovers will end up together. Seems like a chill, mature drama. I can dig it. 

BanG Dream!

It’s kinda embarrassing when studios just assume their show will be a hit. Like they already have live-cosplay-style performances planned out for this but it’s kinda hard to get hype for a live concert based on characters you don’t care about. Points for multi-media creativity but shouldn’t you only have live concerts AFTER a show is popular? Like Lucky Star did. I dunno, just seems like a risky bet on a show that looks generic af. Plus I don’t like how they drew that one girl’s boobs. Shirts don’t work that way...

Welp! That’s all for now. Not the most exciting season if I’m being honest but I had fun checking every show out nevertheless. Cheers to a happy, fun winter for all :)
