Did you know? #4 : Haikyuu's reference to Ushiwaka and 'the samurai who died standing'

Haruchi furudate, the author of Haikyuu is quite known for putting poetic references in names of rival volleyball teams and characters. I myself remember going to the internet whenever new names were revealed in the manga to look for symbolisms. But did you know of this gem where the players themselves are giving poetic names to their fellow mates?

Ushijima Wakatoshi (called as ushiwaka by many<this was given to him by Oikawa if I'm correct>)... is one of the top 3 aces in Japan on Highschool level! But where did this name originate from. Yes, the starting syllables of both of his names together is ushiwaka but that is not the only reason! Ushiwaka is actually the childhood name of Minamoto no Yoshitsune who is considered as one of the greatest and the most popular warriors of Heian era, and one of the most famous samurai fighters in the history of Japan. A befitting name for Wakatoshi for sure!! But there's more!!

Interesting that Oikawa gave him such a symbolic and high-regarded nickname but the symbolism doesn't end there... nah, nah, nah! we also have BENKEI!(Thanks to our resident troll, guess monster!)

We first see Tendou referring to Reon as Benkei and Hinata, as always remembered Reon by this title instead of his name. But who is this Benkei guy..? And how is this connected to Ushiwaka?

Well, Benkei was a warrior monk In the Heian era who later became a retainer of Ushiwaka. Benkei wandered around Kyoto every night on a personal quest to take 1000 swords from samurai warriors, whom he believed were arrogant and unworthy. After collecting 999 swords through duels and looking for his final prize, he met a young man playing a flute at Gojotenjin Shrine in Kyoto. The much shorter man supposedly carried a gilded sword around his waist. This was none other than Ushiwaka and Ushiwaka defeated Benkei in the subsequent duel. Benkei later re-challenged him but lost again. After this, Benkei came to hold great respect for him and became his retainer.

In fact, when Ushiwaka committed seppuku, Benkei stood guard on the main gate in front of a bridge which the enemies were scared to cross and rightfully so, cause whoever did cross the bridge was swiftly dealt with. In the end Benkei was killed by arrows since he could not be defeated in close combat and he died standing. This is know as 'The standing death of Benkei'.

Clearly, Benkei was the symbol of loyalty and strength and thus Tendou considers Reon as the reliable strength of Shiratorizawa. This symbolism is by far one of my favorites throughout the anime and I hope you had a fun time with my rambling...byeeee and I hope you look forward to more such facts guys!!
