a fallen star
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
pairing: zhongli x reader
genre: angstober, events
summary: to spend an eternity with him, was something you could only hope fate was kind enough to grant you in your next life.
word count: 1.7k
a/n: i love archon zhongli smsm, im sorry to all the guizhong lovers for making her evil, but it's for plot purposes alr :( lwk ended up rewriting this like 3 times cus i didn't feel like it was good enough LMAO
Tumblr media
when guizhong was there, morax barely spared a glance towards you. her beauty and skill easily outshone yours, rendering you a mere shadow in her presence. it made your heart ache with sadness. she was the sun, you were the moon, silently beautiful.
they were comfortable, guizhong laughing daintily at a joke morax made, hand placed on morax’s arm. she held his attention, like she always did.
“...what do you think, [name]?” the sudden question startled you from your thoughts as you blinked and smiled apologetically.
“sorry, i was lost in my thoughts.” your own voice sounded dull, not tinkling and pleasant on the ears like guizhong’s.
morax’s amber eyes swept over yours, picking up the dejection in your posture, how you seemed uncomfortable, every muscle tense, as though you were ready to flee at any moment.
“i was just considering some new activities we could introduce for the upcoming lantern rite.” guizhong piped up, cheerfulness lacing her tone.
morax nodded in agreement, “guizhong’s ideas were innovative, as expected from the goddess of dust.” he praised.
of course, guizhong would be praised for her brilliant ideas. she was the perfect goddess, flawless in every way. unlike you, whose body was adorned with imperfections, from battles with the enemies of war and your own inner demons.
standing next to her felt like standing next to the sun, bright and warm, while you were the moon, unnoticed, but trying your best. thinking back, you realised that it was a long time since morax glanced at you the same way he looked at guizhong.
Tumblr media
to him, you were the reliable goddess of strategy, someone he could always trust to have his back. in his eyes, you were his world, the one who hung up the stars and kept the world turning.
like stone, his faith in you was immovable, he trusted your words and plans for the archon war, to train and teach xiao. but guizhong, she held a different type of beauty, her presence commanded attention, her creations and innovations new and intriguing. he found himself spending more time and attention on guizhong, pushing you aside.
like stone, he was dense. if he had known earlier, had accepted his own feelings and understood why, when he was lost in the sea of people at a festival, his eyes searched for you, how your touch sent sparks of electricity across his skin, then this, all this, could’ve been avoided.
Tumblr media
poor cloud retainer. she pitied herself. how did she, the clever, unparalleled adepti, become chained down by two idiots for friends? it was clearer than day that the two of you harboured feelings for each other, but how did neither of you realise.
it was time for her to be the perfect wingwoman and start her matchmaking career earlier than anticipated, before she lost the chance.
Tumblr media
the tea had been poisoned. from the faint curve of guizhong’s lips, her eyes, alert and watching as you downed the cup she had given you, it was so obvious a five-year old could guess.
but you were preoccupied, the slip of paper your messenger pigeon delivered sat on your desk, strewn about with papers on war strategies and your mind racing through all the reasons why he wrote that message.
‘come meet me at the pavilion balcony. xiao will come find you.’
xiao escorted you along the path, the two of you discussing his training, for morax had entrusted you, the goddess of strategy, to be his teacher.
the terrain to the pavilion was difficult, you found yourself panting for breath. halfway up the mountain, the path began to twist and turn under your feet, sweat beading on your forehead. you tripped, feet stumbling over the stones of the path, each step weighing down on your feet.
xiao reached out, brows furrowed in concern.
“is everything ok, shīfu?” xiao’s quiet voice cuts through the ringing in your ears.
you lean against the stone face, shaking your head.
“i must be too tired.” you assure him, though your voice was tight with pain. “you little rascal and morax, always keeping me on my toes, overloading my desk with work.” you jested, playfully poking xiao in the side. “let me rest for a bit and we can keep going.”
pausing, you take in several shaking breaths. xiao’s golden eyes remained fixed on you, concern reflecting in his amber eyes.
with an effort, you pushed yourself off the stone face, marching onwards. xiao crouched in front of you, offering to carry you on his back. you stubbornly disagreed.
“whoever heard of a disciple carrying their master?” you teased, though pain was etched in the lines of your forehead.
xiao hesitated, his eyes flickered between your pale face and the inclining path ahead, but he respected you. thus, he fell into step beside you, ever watchful.
shadows crawled into your vision, blurring the edges and twisting the view of the path. a sudden wave of lightheadedness forced you to your knees, the world spinning sideways. xiao’s quick reaction caught you, leaning you against his shoulder.
“shīfu,” his tone filled with a rare edge of worry and fear. “you’re in no condition to continue.”
you shook your head. “i can do it, it’s going to be fine.” you didn’t know if this was to reassure yourself or xiao, but the sentence repeated itself like a mantra in your head.
the sun slowly set, painting the surrounding mountains with stunning shades of orange and gold, before the deep velvet of night overtook it, stars twinkling in the sky, the moon a watchful guardian.
with xiao supporting your weight, you stumbled up the last few paces up to the pavilion, not noticing the tall figure already present.
your heartbeat raced in your chest at an uncomfortable pace. the hollow thuds rang in your ears, mixing into a clashing melody with the piercing ringing. it made you feel nauseous, bile rising in your throat. you clawed at your chest, hoping it would slow down.
with a heave and a wretch, you threw up, the scarlet liquid splattering on the pristine stone tiles underfoot.
startled by the noise, morax spun around, amber eyes falling upon your trembling figure. xiao’s golden gaze, usually so calm and steady, now radiated desperation a silent plea for help.
for a heartbeat, morax stood frozen with shock. then, without a second thought, his posture of elegance thrown to the wind, morax races towards you.
he dropped to his knees, sinking to the floor, gently cradling you in his arms, gloved fingers gently tapping against your cheek, desperate to keep you awake. his voice trembled as he chanted your name, praying to the stars you would stay with him.
“[name],” he murmured urgently. “wake up, look at me.”
through the fog of pain and exhaustion, you felt the warmth of his embrace radiating, a familiar voice cutting through the pain. his scent–earth, osmanthus and tea…no, the scent of home–wrapped around you like a hug. you squinted up at him, your body feeling impossibly heavy, darkness threatening to bring you under.
“morax,” you breathed, chest heaving as you fought for breath. “i came…to see you, as you asked.”
morax looked at you in confusion. “wasn’t it you who asked to see me?” he questioned.
confusion surfaced on your face, until you realised who the mastermind behind this meeting could’ve been. you chuckled, clear and bright, gave way to violent coughing, which left you gasping for air.
“it must’ve been cloud retainer then.” you wheezed, breath struggling. “sly crane,” you teased, voice devoid of malice or hate. “this is her way of meddling.” you manage a wry smile.
you don’t give morax a chance to reply before you’re speaking again, holding a finger to his lips as words gushed from yours like a fountain.
“you know, i’ve liked you for a long time,” you confessed, your words carrying the weight of years of longing. “so long. i’d always hoped that you would look at me the same way, but you never did. seeing you with guizhong all the time breaks my heart.”
your chest tightened painfully, each breath a battle, but you fought on. “you mean everything to me, but i dont mean anything to you. i see the way you look at her, i hope she brings you joy.”
you open your mouth to speak again, but cold droplets that land on your face interrupt you from speaking. with an effort, you tilt your head up, watching the tears cascade down morax’s face.
with a trembling hand, you reach up to wipe his tears. morax’s hand envelops yours, his warm hand contrasting against your cold, clammy skin.
morax’s breath hitched, as his amber eyes searched yours. you open your mouth to say something more, but morax interrupts you.
“no,” he breathed. “i do love you too, i think,,” he pleaded, “ if you give me some time, let me work this out slowly.”
“i want to,” you breathed out. “but i dont know if i have time left. i’m cold.” you snuggled deeper into morax’s embrace, uncertainty weighted in your heart. you could feel your life slipping away, the edges of darkness creeping closer.
“im tired.” you mumble, your voice barely a whisper. “i’ll just…sleep a little while…”
“shīfu,” xiao’s trembling voice broke through the silent night, “please, don’t leave me yet.”
you peel your eyes open, turning your head in xiao’s direction, motioning him to come closer. obediently, xiao approaches, tears streaming down his face like a waterfall.
“shǎháizi,” you breathed, voice light with teasing. “listen well to morax, he will be your new master from now on.” you instructed, hand reaching out to pet his head. “smile for me?” you mustered a weak smile that xiao reflected, his own sorrow mingled with hope.
a final bought of violent coughing tore through your body, each one sending pain sparking through your body. blood spilling from your lips. the metallic taste filled your mouth, mixing with the bitter taste of fear as darkness overtook you.
your eyes fluttered shut as the life left your body. in the distance, a star fell out of the sky, its tail trailing like a sorrowful goodbye.
“[name]?” morax whispered, voice raw with regret. “open your eyes, look at me.” his plea fell on deaf eyes. “you never heard my response, you can’t leave me yet.”
“i think…no, i know, that i do love you.”
fate was cruel, you had found your forever, but at the wrong time. someday, perhaps fate would grant us a second chance.

Tumblr media
xiao has never been interested in mortal celebrations. but after meeting you, he can’t help but want to learn more about them. “would you… want to come to the lantern rite with me?”
you were pleasantly surprised when he asked; glad to see that the yaksha was finally coming out of his shell. you laughed, took his hand (which prompted a blushing mess out of him), and led him down to the harbor, where the festivities were already starting.
figuring he still wasn’t too comfortable being around large crowds of mortals, you took him to a secluded spot on a hill by the pavilion, close enough so that you could still see the lanterns that lit up the sky.
“they’re beautiful, aren’t they?” you ask him, following his eyes as he stared at tiny glowing dots fading in the night. xiao nods slowly, seemingly mesmerized by the sight. you smile softly, leaning your head on his shoulder as the two of you watch the fireworks show that followed.
dan heng, being a bit of a bookworm, was a little… socially awkward, to say the least. luckily, you found his quirks entertaining. “there’s a new bookstore that opened across the street… would you be interested?”
so one tuesday afternoon, you meet him by the park, where he stood with a bouquet of flowers in his hands. you giggle when he awkwardly offers them to you. “of course, why else would you have bought them for?”
making you way to the bookstore, dan heng watches as you stroll down the aisles, picking out some you wanted. he felt his heart swell as he spies his favorite novel in your hand. “i didn’t know you liked that book too…”
the two of you end up spending the rest of the afternoon in the cafe next door, chatting about your favorite books over coffee. he smiles, maybe being a geek isn’t a such bad thing after all.
zoro never quite wanted to leave the sunny when the crew docked on a new island; he preferred to stay behind and take a nap, or train. but you always encouraged him to come along, and he finally decided to go along with it. “i’m gonna go explore… if ‘ya wanna come with.”
there happened to be a small crafts market in the town nearby, so you and zoro (mostly just you) went admiring the handicrafts the stalls had on display. "aww, how lovely!" you admire a little clockwork deer that reminded you a bit of chopper.
then you realized you had some business to attend to in town, so you left zoro behind for a few minutes, saying, "don't you dare get lost while i'm gone!" he stands there awkwardly, before glancing back at the crafts stall. while i'm here...
...and then of course you happen to accidentally encounter the marines, causing you to have to run back to the ship with zoro in tow. when you're finally safe in the crow's nest of the sunny, however... he presented you with the mechanical deer toy from earlier, to your joy. "i don't have that many berries but.. i know you wanted it, so i guess i'll just have to pay nami back later."
Tumblr media
end notes. i thought i would write a lot for xiao but i ended up writing more for zoro lmao he’s been taking up all of my brain recently but i hope you enjoyed <3

Xiao/Aether 👹⛅ Masterlist 2.0
A compilation of moments between Xiao and Aether through the years. The last revamp I did on the old post got nuked by Tumblr, so I just made a new one.
I tried to be as complete as I can, but there's probably some stuff I still missed. The shipping wiki is great for compiling stuff, but I felt it wasn't very detailed. Soooo here ya go
Lover's Oath (Lone Tower in the West)
Thank you @kristalijah for the reminder!
On Aether's journey through Liyue, he was tasked to inform the Adepti of Rex Lapis' "death". The Wangshu quest is the first time he meets Xiao in the game, and a certain detail didn't catch a lot of people's attention until the soundtrack got released a while later.
"Lover's Oath" is the song that plays in the background the very first time Xiao appears in front of Aether. On one hand, this could very well just be in reference to the place they were in, as the balcony of Wangshu Inn is known to be where lovers spend time together. However, this theme never plays for any other scene again, nor is it the background music for the balcony in general.
The only time this track is used again is during Tuned to the World's Sounds, an event in-game where Xiao and Aether duet this song on the very place they met, with Xiao playing a lyre, and Aether, a zither.
This theme has only every been used when they are together. So, Lover's Oath can be considered "their" theme. I adore this tidbit of information because it fits their future relationship so well, as the game constantly reminds us now of Xiao's promise to Aether.
Battle of Osial
If you're a fan of this ship, I'm sure you already know. This was the moment the fandom went, "wait a minute...", essentially the birth of the ship itself.
This cutscene is just [chef's kiss], its existence makes me so happy. The Aether community in 2020 has never been the same.
Aether's feet were already steadied. Xiao could have let go already, or let him fall as gracefully as Mountain Shaper did to that guard (I would have hated him). There was no reason to hold on. In fact, he had every excuse to release his hold the moment they got to safety because he was the one who kept insisting that contact with mortals, or even being near them was something he absolutely Did Not Want. But he didn't let go. No, even more— he tightened his hold, squeezing Aether's hand and telling him to be careful. HUH?!?!
Looking back on this scene also made me think of Aether's unique ability to purify things he touches, something that still hasn't been explained. I wonder if Xiao was already gravitating towards Aether because of it, finding comfort in his contact without knowing why, just yet.
Lantern Rite 1.3
I'm sure we're all familiar with this scene, right?
Tumblr media
The very first time Xiao promised Ae that no matter what, as long as he calls his name, he will be there. I think the game showed how special that promise is really well.
Moonlight Merriment
On the same year, they released Moonlight Merriment. The first time Aether summoned him was here, when Xiangling was looking for a 'customer' with mild tastes. While Xiao told Ae to call for him when there's trouble, it's really cute that he doesn't really mind what sort of 'trouble' it is.
youtube
Whether it be actual danger, or a small dilemma that Aether needs help with, he's there. (Though I guess you can see it as anything that is bothering Ae is considered trouble enough, no matter the scale :))
This scene also clarifies that the promise was specifically made to Aether, and no one else, not even Paimon. The fact that they went so far as to have Paimon call for Xiao multiple times only for nothing to happen is... so fucking funny. Aether says his name once and he's already there.
Just... your commitment is really subtle, Xiao. Keep at it.
Baizhu's Story Quest
The second time Aether summons him is during Baizhu's story quest, and I think this part is what really cemented the weight of that promise for me.
youtube
Every single time Aether brings up that he can contact our resident yaksha so easily, they're always surprised. The adepti are known for wanting to keep to themselves that even Changsheng thought it would be impossible for them to meet, but here Xiao was, just one word away for one special traveler.
It's an oath that was made with such... devotion? Loyalty?
It would have been a little more distant had it just been for protection, something like "when you're on the brink of death, you may call for me." but it isn't. This was literally a promise that whenever Ae needed him, Xiao will be there, "Anywhere. Anytime."
It's also sweet how Xiao's departing words are always a reminder to call him whenever needed, to the point where Aether has to say "Yeah, we know." If that promise had an expiration, it sure as hell doesn't matter because Xiao keeps renewing it anyway.
Perilous Trail (Interlude)
Unfortunately, there was one time where Xiao failed to get to Aether, but only because he physically wasn’t able to. The only time he couldn’t fulfill his promise was because he was stuck in a different plane of existence. But even then, once he heard that Aether was in trouble, he was persuaded to cross a literal fucking spacerift to get to them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You absolutely cannot tell me they aren't in love because you would be wrong.
Also Yanfei being perceptive enough to use Aether being in trouble to convince Xiao? Bless. Where else did we see someone pull out the 'Aether' card on Xiao recently...?
Tumblr media
god he's so fucking easy and everyone knows
Anyway, this quest also showed how protective Ae is of Xiao, constantly asking how he is or if he was okay, ignoring Xiao's warnings entirely.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He even gets mad when Xiao brings up creating a will.
Just— a lot of things happened in this quest. While I can't add all of them, do yourself a favor and either play this or check it out in the archives. Yanfei knows what's up
Also there's a part where Aether looks over Xiao's sleeping face and wonders to himself if a person who's always wary is capable of dreams.
To finish off the Chasm segment, it ended with a conversation that had Xiao realizing a lot of things he was lost to because of his grief: that there are people who will always care about him, and in his words, "Even the darkest hearts have room for those they cherish.
youtube
"Will Xiao be ravaged by the unending war he wages and be plunged into despair? Or... will he meet someone who understands his sacrifice, and can shine a ray of light into his dark world..." —Dainsleif, Collected Miscellany - "Xiao: Conqueror of Demons"
I think... it was important for him to have had this conversation with Aether. Zhongli acknowledges this as well in the most recent Lantern Rite, but the beginning of the changes within Xiao started because of Aether constantly pushing him to see the light.
Bonus! Xiao being a dumbass
Tumblr media
WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU MEAN "...Really..." YOU WERE JUST STANDING THERE?!?!!??!??
Companion Voicelines
Aether: "How do you like it here?", "Want to chat?"
Tumblr media
To bring up Aether's ability to purify things again (Dvalin's Tear), it could be related to that. Or, maybe Xiao just gets so in his head about Aether in his presence that his Karmic Debt just gets insta-blocked. Who knows?
Aether: Is there anything you'd like to do?
Tumblr media
For the first and second Lantern Rite, Xiao was still adamant on not even stepping foot in Liyue Harbor, declining every invitation to go there because of how much he disliked being near mortals.
Yet in his teapot voicelines, once you reach a high enough friendship with him, Xiao actually takes the initiative to invite Aether to go to the city, if only to understand him better. Xiao explicitly says that his willingness to go to the harbor was for him.
This isn’t the first time Xiao brings up his wish to get to know Aether better. At first, he kept saying that he has no interest in human affairs, but in his voicelines, as the two of them get closer and closer, he says that he would like to know more about Aether.
Tumblr media
I also really like Shenhe's voiceline. Aether's effect on Xiao benefited not only him, but the people surrounding Xiao as well. It's shown in the way Xiao's become softer, and more open to being in social gatherings. We see it the most in Lantern Rite 3.4, Waterborne Poetry, and the biggest one that point towards the cause being Aether is Xiao's birthday letter of 2023.
Birthdays
Tumblr media
If Moon Carver's reaction is anything to go by, the old Xiao doing this for his birthday was unfathomable. As Xiao allowed himself to open up to the world, the people around him were also able to enjoy their old friend's presence as well.
Dainsleif said that the cost of his duty was perpetual solitude, but it seems that that's no longer true.
Fun little note: The fact that he went to Moon Carver first is funny to me, since Aether and Moon Carver are both voiced by Zach Aguilar.
Tumblr media
I was reminded by @comfortingnightmare that Aether was the first person to celebrate Xiao's birthday in a thousand years :>
Which brings me to another topic! Gifts!
Aside from the adorable fact that every character in the game gifts Aether something on their birthday, Xiao gives him a butterfly made from leaves in his voiceline.
From what I've read, butterflies supposedly mean conjugal love, freedom, and vulnerability of life in Chinese culture. I'm really no expert on this so take that with a grain of salt.
There's also the more obvious meaning, which is transformation in one's self. I really don't like tackling this kind of thing because it's very "the curtain was blue", but if we take their relationship in consideration, it fits.
Lucent Crescent
Big thank you to @spiderskull142 because I didn't even know about this.
In this year's TPRGT image, we see that Paimon is holding a red box—Aether's gift for Xiao. I didn't really pay much attention to it at the time since I thought it was just a regular gift box... and also because I was distracted by Xiao pretending to sleep. It's about the closest we can get to Xiao feigning illness to get pampered LMAO
Anyway, I looked it up and apparently those specific boxes are used to keep jewelry. I looked around Liyue to see if any other store used this box for anything else, but the only one that seemed to have it is Mingxing Jewelry, a boutique that specialized in an ornament called "Lucent Crescent".
Tumblr media
Note: The closest I could get to a box that was similar-looking were the red stacked boxes outside of random houses. No other store seemed to have them, so I can only assume that's where the box was from.
When you interact with Xingxi, the person who runs the shop, she tells you about the meaning of Lucent Crescents.
Xingxi: Have you ever heard anyone mention our Lucent Crescent ornaments? They are especially popular with young people. We produce a very limited quantity of Lucent Crescent – only ten per month. People say that if you manage to purchase one of them, you are sure to win the heart of your beloved.
As we know, Aether is very mindful with the gifts he gives every year. I don’t think it’s too far-fetched to think he would order something as valuable as this for Xiao.
And speaking of Aether's gifts...
Teyvat Food Notes: Sweet Dream, Adeptus' Temptation, Mint Jelly, Unagi Chazuke, Satisfying Salad
Alongside Xiao's birthday art are articles from the Teyvat Food Notes, where real-life recipes of in-game food are made, and it also has interactions between XiaoAe on his birthday.
Sweet Dream (Almond Tofu)
Note: Both google translate and Papago seem to use Mandrill instead of Xiao, so... just know that’s who it’s talking about.
Tumblr media
This is where we learn that Xiao didn’t even make Sweet Dream; this dish was Aether’s thank you gift to him. Xiao’s specialty dish is a gift from Aether. I’m—aGH! ANYWAY.
Sweet Dream also makes an appearance in Childe’s birthday art in 2022. And— I’m really sorry to Tartaglia, but seeing that dish stole all his thunder I just couldn’t get over it.
Tumblr media
I like to think that Aether was so preoccupied with making Childe his birthday feast that he began to absentmindedly prepare Almond Tofu in the way he’s most used to (because of how often Xiao requests it.)
Additional:
Tumblr media
Adeptus Temptation
This one in particular isn’t from one of his birthdays, but a special they put out for the first Lantern Rite, which includes every released Liyue character at the time. I was initially going to write it off, but I thought hey what the hell, what are the odds that there’s gonna be a XiaoAether moment in here?
Tumblr media
Of course there was. With these two, I should have known.
Note: “Fairy/Buddha Jump over the Wall” is apparently an actual Chinese delicacy that the Adeptus’ Temptation is based on!
A little more additional context, I added the part where Zhongli was going full English teacher at the beginning because everyone was spouting poetry so passionately with every bite of the dish. That’s why Aether wonders, “Do all Liyue people eat like this?”
That’s also why Aether asked Xiao to give him an evaluation of the food, hoping he’d be the same as the others. I found it really cute, especially right now as we just finished Waterborne Poetry.
From the very beginning, Aether caught a glimpse of Xiao’s affinity to being poetic (Isolation does that to ya, who knew?), which is why in the event, he encourages him to write poems. With enough encouragement, along with Xiao pondering over Aether’s words and advice, he eventually does write a poem.
Tumblr media
Frost-Coated Slime (Mint Jelly)
For this Teyvat Food Note (2021), Aether laments that he doesn’t really know Xiao very well when he realized that the only gift he can think of giving him is almond tofu.
“Although it is not impossible to continue to treat [Xiao] to eat almond tofu, there is a stubbornness in my heart that has been preventing me from continuing to serve almond tofu.
I don’t want to be the same as usual, I don’t want to give [Xiao] the same gift as everyone else.”
Tumblr media
Aether realizes that almond tofu has become somewhat basic, since everyone else gives the same thing, and it’s no longer a gift he considers to be special enough. He then remembers the mint jelly he once tasted in Mondstadt, and thought it was similar enough to the texture and taste of almond tofu. He decides that that’s what he wants to give him.
Once he meets with Xiao, Xiao gives him the ‘butterflies’ he caught (I assume this actually refers to the crystalflies he gives along with the letter?) Aether thinks wearing [crystalflies] on his head doesn’t suit him, but Xiao seems to expect him to wear it judging by his silence. This also fits his letter that year, where he admits he was actively looking for crystalflies for Aether to put on his hair, thinking it would look nice on him.
The last part of the food note is so heartwarming. After Aether has him help prepare the mint jelly, they finally settle down to eat it.
Xiao: It doesn’t look like I want to eat it. I’d better order almond tofu.
[Aether] grabs Xiao and explained that it actually tasted very good, and the texture should be similar to almond tofu.
Aether: The most important thing is that for Xiao’s birthday, I want to make something different as a gift...
Xiao stopped.
Xiao: I don’t worry about the taste of the food you cook. I just want to collect it.
They are so cute?!?!?!?!
Later on, Xiao confesses that he doesn’t like almond tofu just because he likes the taste, but because of the memories that accompany it.
Aether then looks at Xiao, but Xiao doesn’t look at him. Instead, he says “The jelly I made today is a special memory. Thank you.”
Unagi Chazuke
Thank you @dragon-type-nuggetz for sending this one because this is what reminded me that the other teyvat food notes existed aside from almond tofu and adeptus temptation lol
Last one for the Teyvat Food Notes! There’s none for 2023, because they seem to have discontinued it entirely after 2022. This one’s a lot shorter than the other ones, but no less sweet.
Tumblr media
Aether knows that with Xiao’s dedication to Liyue, he works non-stop to defend the nation and has never experienced anything as leisurely as going on a vacation for the sake of relaxing. So instead, Aether tells him stories of his travels, and he decides to cook a dish that gives the feeling of traveling with him.
Xiao also says something here that I found really funny.
“Let me start by saying that I have no interest in human food. Even if the food you make doesn’t taste good, I won’t eat it.” CAP. You’ve gone this long eating Aether’s food, who the hell are you trying to fool?
In the end, Xiao finishes the entire bowl to Aether’s shock, but he says he’s sorry as he can’t think of any words to praise the food.
Aether then says that the fact that Xiao finished it at all is the greatest compliment.
Satisfying Salad
This isn’t connected to the food notes this time, but just the dish in general. Satisfying Salad and Almond Tofu are the first dishes that Aether has ever given Xiao in-game to convince him to talk to them. I thought it was a pretty minor thing and didn’t think much of it at the time, up until Smiley Yanxiao brings it up again in Moonlight Merriment.
Tumblr media
Everyone around Xiao thought that almond tofu really was the only thing he can eat, only for Aether to prove otherwise. While he claims that he has no interest in human food, and the only thing he can possibly stomach is almond tofu, he has never denied anything that Aether offers him, even when the two of them didn’t even know each other very well yet.
So, for all of Xiao’s talk, he has shown in his actions pretty clearly that Aether is and has always been an exception for him. Whether that be for food, or anything else...
Lantern Rite 3.4
I am here to remind you all of a beautiful scene that should never be forgotten for years to come.
youtube
Regardless of Genshin trying to be mysterious and making us guess who saved Aether, the fact that they both came rushing over is incredible on its own. They know that Aether isn't a damsel in distress, and Paimon's acting was so on the nose, but they still couldn't allow even the slightest possibility of harm to come to him.
Xiao looking away and talking in circles just to say he really was worried is the funniest fucking thing.
As for the Lantern Rite dinner... well, first things first. We say thank you to Hu Tao for her services as a professional wing-woman (It's her side-job to advertise the parlor)
Tumblr media
Moving on! Remember when Aether told Xiao he'll bail him out of uncomfortable social situations? (Companion voicelines)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There really isn't much I could say that I haven't already said before. For XiaoAether shippers, this was Hoyo spoon-feeding content on a silver spoon. It's Aether and Xiao at their most comfortable with each other, talking and spending time with the people they care about.
It's years of talking to each other, of Xiao realizing that he's at ease when he's speaking to Aether, of learning to talk more about himself to the point where he starts talking about his past and the people in it...
It'll be awhile until Xiao will ever be comfortable with large crowds, but as long as Aether's there who knows when it's becoming 'too much', he'll be fine.
Aether is also, in Xiao's eyes, the most distinguished guest among them all.
Tumblr media
I couldn't add it but Xiao also says "I trust Aether's judgement." in this scene.
This Lantern Rite is also where Zhongli acknowledges what Aether has done for Xiao :")
Tumblr media
(Suspiciously on the last screenshot, the perspective makes Zhongli look like a pastor wedding the two of them)
Waterborne Poetry
The catalyst for this post. The reminder of how lovely this ship is, and how far these two have come.
As we have all learned from Xiangling, Yanfei, Venti and Hu Tao, you only need to mention Aether's name to convince Xiao of whatever it is you're planning. The part where Aether and Team Chongyun were trying to convince him to come with them and touch some fucking grass was really cute.
This event and the previous Lantern Rite also had Aether and Xiao talking privately, only to get interrupted by Paimon/Xiangling (as well as calling them out lmao)
Tumblr media
And, of course, the scene that everyone freaked out over,
youtube
A short, but sweet moment where Aether looks at Xiao from afar and immediately gets inspired, performing a poem where the real meaning is shared only between the two of them...
And Xiao's smile.
Tumblr media
An expression that Aether had done so well to bring out.
Xiao in a Commission
One last thing! Xiao appears in the Liyue Commission "Uninvited Guests". It's very short, but cute
Xiao: Oh, it’s you.
Aether: What brings you here?
Xiao: I encountered these monsters by chance and defeated them.
Xiao: This area is not safe. So...
Aether: I’ll be careful.
Xiao: Right. I have other matters to attend to. See you.
-
...There are still things I couldn't add, but that's okay. I got mostly everything this time so I'm satisfied. Very grateful to the people who reblogged the old post to add more stuff :))
Some things I didn't add were trivia from the shipping wiki. For one, apparently Xiao's JP voice actor was told by the director to be gentler when speaking to the Traveler. There's also a small part of the Lantern Rite animation where as Xiao and Aether watch the lanterns side by side, Xiao turns to look at Aether right as Paimon blocks his head from view :")

Got a cute idea for ya. How would Lisa react if she attended the current Lantern Rite and saw her s/o had made a kite that looked like her hat?
Since I thought about writing after getting c6 Lisa it's only logical that I'd do Lisa content :3
Lisa seeing her S/O's kite for the lantern rite
Reader here is gender neutral
Seeing how excited you were for lantern rite she had to make sure to make your dream come true and depart to Liyue as soon as she found an opportunity to.
The sights were gorgeous, kites and lanterns made quite a combination... As you walked around the harbor you suddenly got an idea...
You told her that you had something important to take care of so she left you be for a moment. Of course she picked up that the "sudden very important issue you need to take care of" might be a surprise for her.
She found a way to amuse herself while she waited for you, while also making sure there will be a lot of festive activities you could experience together.
Enjoying tea while listening to storytellers was how she spent majority of her time without you.
But she also learned a lot about a kite flying contest and she already had an idea where you ran off to.
You did spend suspicious amount of time near a kite stall when the two of you went shopping around after all.
When you were done with your business however she decided not to think too much about it. Guessing what you've been up to served no purpose when she could either ask or find out for herself soon.
After Gaming's performance you decided that it was time to reveal what you spent your time on: a kite that's shaped like her hat.
It was adorable that you thought of that "Oh sweetie... It looks amazing" she gave you a kiss on the cheek before laughing a bit "I certainly didn't expect something like that, you always have the most unique ideas, cutie"
That was one way to make the lantern rite something she'll remember for a longer time. And of course once you go back home she might use the kite a lot in the future, what better place is there to fly a kite than land of anemo God?

(wc: 1.1k) warning that there is going to be big block paragraphs here!! | not proofread
Tumblr media
“What are you doing here?” You asked the person at your front door.
“Heard you’re still sad, hm? Here,” Scaramouche said, giving you a single rose. Huh, it reminds you of Lantern Rite.
“Oh? You know you’re too late right, Scara? It’s not Valentine’s anymore,” you snicker at his timing. Could it not be more wrong?
“Just take it and move on. Can’t I just give you a rose?” He says, rolling his eyes while shoving the rose into your hands while you invite him inside.
“Well, friends don’t really give roses so casually. Anyway, yeah, I’m still a bit upset, but it’s nothing I can’t handle. I’ll be fine,” you reassure his already doubting thoughts. But, then again, he was notorious for being stubborn. Your front door closed, putting the rose he gave you on the counter.
“Like you are. Hide under that facade all you want, I’ll just keep breaking it,” damn, he always knew what made you blush.
“Fuck off, Raiden,” truth be told, you are still going to be annoyed by his antics.
“No,” you sigh. You’ve accepted a long time ago that he’s still the person who was making fun of you because you wore your sweater backwards once when you were in 6th grade.
“So, why are you here?” You ask him. You didn’t ask him to come, nor did he announce anything prior. Now that you think of it, you weren’t even wearing something decent. Just an oversized sweater and shorts. God, damn it.
“You’re upset, right? Talk about it to me, maybe it can help you feel better,” he suggests.
“Really? Alright. Well, my mom still isn’t paying for my tuition, so Childe’s still paying. I’m thankful to have someone like him in my life. And my dad… We’re not really close, but we’re not strangers. He knows stuff about me, he knows what’s happening in my life, and I know what happens in his. I can’t really read him though, it’s like he always has a poker face, like he doesn’t care. Not like I do as well, we don’t talk a whole lot." You describe your relationship with your dad. It was also the first time he's heard anything about you and your dad.
"I think you know the rest, my mom still looks down on me, why I’m not always top one, why I wasn’t the person who got the highest marks, stuff like that. Uh, my studies are good, I think. I still have research to do, you know. Uhm, I don’t really know what to feel about my situation with my parents, but what kind of 18 year old girl would? Haha. It’s not like they did it as a joke, they were always one to be sure of their decisions. And… Uh…”
“You don’t have to tell me about him if you can’t. I’m just here to see if you’re okay.” It was obvious to him that you were on the verge of tears, he didn’t want to see you cry any longer.
“No, it’s fine. I think it’s going to help me.” You tell him.
“Alright, just tell me if you don’t want to tell me anything else, okay?”
“Okay. Uhm, I guess I was hurt when you left without warning. I was wondering why you were absent in class one day then Ayaka told me you moved to Snezhnaya. She knew you’re important to me, so of course, she told me. I was distracted because of you that I got my first failing grade, heh. I almost didn’t show my parents but a part of me thought they would feel bad for me, especially because they knew we were close." You say as if there was hope they could feel empathy for their daughter.
"But, all I got was lecture after lecture, telling me that no one should be in the way of my studies, of my “dreams”. It wasn’t even my dreams, it was theirs. It was their dream to make me the most perfect daughter in the world, that I’d be a doctor, a surgeon, or a lawyer. They didn’t care what I wanted for my life. They were blinded by the concept of me being what they were; a Judge and the head of some department in the hospital. Like I want to spend my life studying. Can’t I just escape their unrealistic expectations? Their unbelievable dreams they want me to achieve? I can’t take it." You wanted to cry when they made it clear they would stop at nothing to make you the highest achieving person in the world. God, how could they be so ruthless?
"They’ve made it clear that I was going to be someone who would change the world, but I was only six years old. They set their stupid, sky-high thoughts on a girl who barely even started elementary. "Anything less than the best is nothing but filth on the ground." That was their motto, something I could 'live' by. All I've done is survive." Your voice cracks, you wanted to hide from the world, it's fucked up that they made you like this, paranoid, always thinking "what are they going to say?" or " what are they going to do to me?" Your mind was occupied, you didn't see how he was already there beside you, wiping off the stray tears that flowed down your face.
"It's funny too. When we were still kids..., you were the sole person I came to when I had problems or when I had something to tell you, someone I hated because you didn't even tell me goodbye. I didn't want to see or think of you. I didn't want to think about how you weren't by my side anymore, never to be there again. That's what I thought, then you showed up, beside Ajax, on the campus I studied at, in the area we grew up with. I was shocked because you had the fucking audacity to show up after years. I hated you more, but all you did was make me like you all over again. Hah, and I thought I finally moved on.”
“Sh, It’s alright, [Name]. I’m sorry that I hurt you. I’m sorry that I left so abruptly. Please, stop crying.” He said rubbing your back while hugging you in an attempt to make you calm down.
“Here, drink water.” He gave you a glass of water from your kitchen counter.
“Thanks…” You drink the beverage, wiping your eyes. It was embarrassing he had to see you like this, you’re dressed in something indecent and crying in front of him. That’s nice.
“Look, [Name]. I never meant to hurt you the way I did. The decision of moving to Snezhnaya was not mine, it was Ei’s choice, I just followed her because I was still a child. I was opposed to moving there, but I had no other option. I had no time to say goodbye, no time to explain how I wanted to stay here, with you.”
What?

OMG YOU FOUND HIM IN THE VIDEO?!?
I was afraid they didn’t put him in at all! :O
I guess it makes sense though? He’s not part of this event, but he’s still a prominent character in the game, so I was a bit disappointed that he wasn’t chilling with anyone. :/
BUT THEN I REMEMBERED (no offense, Childe my love) he literally doesn’t have any friends 😭 Like all the harbingers lowkey hate him and he lowkey hates them back. He’s only really interacted with Yoimiya, Xinyan, and Zhongli?
Like Yoimiya and Xinyan definitely aren’t that close to him. They kinda just hung around him because he was in an event with them? Then he’s only friends with Zhongli, but it doesn’t make sense for them to hang out because Zhongli was hanging with the other archons.
But then I tried thinking about who he COULDVE hung out with and???
It’s not like with Albedo and Tighnari, they were clearly hanging out because they’re both intelligent and we’re probably talking. Or like with Itto and Cyno, they both share the common interest of playing Genius Invokation TCG.
Like no one who was there would really wanna talk to him? 😭 Even though he seems so easygoing, he has NO friends :(
Sorry, Childe brain rot. I love this funky ginger man. I’m sad that he has no friends 😭 He needs a hug and maybe a kiss… AND MAYBE A PARTNER WHO WANTS TO CUDDLE HIS FLUFFY LEGACY
Okay sorry again, brainrot over XD
okay place your bets everyone, which Pyro lady will Childe befriend next? my bet's on Yanfei because she's cool
oh oh oh but this is making me remember a brainrot i had a couple days ago- reuniting with Childe during Lantern Rite
hear me out, you're from Liyue and met him when he was stationed to do Harbinger duties, and you ended up spending a lot of time together, eventually falling in love. Childe adores you so much and wants to spend the rest of his life with you, but after the Liyue incident and Osial getting summoned he’s shipped off to Inazuma so he doesn’t cause more unrest- the other Harbingers don’t particularly like him, except maybe Pulcinella, and you can’t exactly go with him since the Harbor is your home
so tearfully you say goodbye to Childe and Foul Legacy, because you love them both and they love you, too
Childe sends you letters as often as he can, but it’s difficult since he’s trying to keep you a secret- people knowing you’re the Eleventh Harbinger’s lover could very well put you in danger. it hurts missing him this much, your heart breaking into pieces whenever you’re alone, but you have to stay strong because you know he’ll return eventually, when work permits him to
he promised to return by Lantern Rite. he promised
Childe’s gaze trails across the Harbor, seemingly admiring the lights and ribbons that decorate every door, but in truth he’s only looking for one person- you. it’s been so long since he’s seen you in person- Archons, how long has it been, exactly? too long, and both he and Foul Legacy know that. his heart thumps erratically in his chest, strangely nervous- would you be angry with him? worried about his time oversees? he couldn’t deny that he didn’t love when you fussed over him, but your fretting and fear broke his heart
or perhaps you’ve just forgotten him by this point- he wouldn’t blame you for it
“Childe!”
and there you are, standing a few feet away and staring in awe, like you didn’t truly expect him to show up. the Harbinger simply smiles, a soft, gentle smile reserved only for you, and opens his arms. in a few moments you’ve dashed over into his embrace, squeezing him tightly and fighting back joyful tears as he chuckles, hand already petting your hair
he’s back- he’s back and he’s with you, and you’re reunited
you drag him away somewhere quieter, out of the crowd in case anyone recognizes him but also because Foul Legacy is chirping insistently in the back of his head, wanting nothing more than to take control and wrap his claws around you for the first time in months- the Abyssal monster is even clingier than Childe, and the moment you’re alone there’s a burst of Electro, Foul Legacy towering over you
to anyone else it’d be terrifying, but you simply beam and press your cheek into his gentle palm, reveling in the happy croons and purrs that slip from his mouth. with a quick sweep Foul Legacy holds you in his arms, head pressed against his chest so you can still admire the fireworks. your hands wind into his lilac fluff, idly petting and combing it with your fingers as you stare up at the sky, happy and content
and Childe and Foul Legacy are finally home

Happy Lantern Rite!

HOLY FUCK I HATE SHADING
Okay if you haven’t guessed by now or just don’t care, these three are the aged-up versions of the little pirate gang in Liyue Harbor. Little Fei(left), Little Lulu(middle), and Little Meng(right). (From the Pirates! Argh! achievement)
This is obviously years later when they’re young adults. The trio are still best friends, but their new occupations make it so they can’t meet up often. However, they will always be together during one of Liyue’s most important events: The Lantern Rite. These three will find a way to spend the festival together no matter what. Their favorite tradition is to walk around the harbor eating fried lotus root and fish smothered in Xiangling’s favorite Jueyun chili sauce while looking at the lanterns.
Here’s some extra stuff about the outfits because I can’t shut up about anything
Lulu is a fairly levelheaded girl. She has a good grasp on her people skills and knew from a young age what she likes and dislikes. When Ying’er eventually quit the Scent of Spring and opens her own perfumery, Lulu immediately lands herself an apprenticeship working there. Not only is she an excellent sales employee and negotiator, but Lulu is also invaluable when perfecting Ying’er’s more ambitious recipes. She has a delicate nose that is perfect for creating unusual and rare fragrances and a sharp mind that’s constantly churning out ideas on improving business.
She markets herself well and connects to new clients easily so they get the most out of their shopping experience. Ying'er is delighted to teach her the tricks of the trade and is quick to send Lulu on home visits to their wealthier clientele when she feels Lulu is ready. Lulu becomes well-versed in high society because of this. She had worked with Yanfei and Keqing on more than one occasion when their shop was hired to prepare self-care gifts for important guests who frequent Yujing Terrace. Lulu stayed in Liyue, but despite that, she could welcome any diplomat from any nation with no issue. Who knew that becoming a perfumer would lead to her joining the cutthroat world of socialites?
The thing is, Lulu draws on past experiences as inspiration for creating new recipes. She journals about interesting experiences or strange materials so she can look back through her notes when she needs them later. This is reflected in her design, which is the least complicated and changes very little from her original design in the game. Lulu keeps a strong hold on her childhood memories, which affects how she dresses and presents herself. Some socialites scoff at her simple dress and willingness to get her hands dirty, but Lulu has never minded a word they say. She works at a perfume shop, but she doesn't own one. Yet. How can they expect her to stay perfectly neat and tidy all the time? And prettier dresses would just get ruined.
Meng is actually the most stubborn one in the group. If Lulu knew how to read people, and Fei was the quieter one, Meng was the one who was bullheaded and stuck in his own world. This is obvious in the game when the two boys get into a fight about who got to be captain for their pirate play. It was mentioned Meng got to be captain a lot, while Fei never got a chance. Of course, he didn't mean any harm; they were kids, after all. But Meng finally got the chance to grow out of this phase when his father was approached with a business proposal. With it came the opportunity to go to Sumeru!
Still fairly young at this point, Meng's friends help him prepare for his journey. They're upset but promise to stay in touch until Meng returns, whenever possible. He researches endlessly so they're prepared for anything, and discovers a love for learning on the trip. He and his father meet Tighnari in Gandharva Ville, and the Forest Watcher guides them through the Avidya Forest. Tighnari quickly becomes Meng's new role model, and from this point onward, he was determined to help people just like the archer did. He absorbs things like a sponge, buying books from every stop they make and mailing them back to himself in Liyue Harbor. His father's work with mushrooms and other materials led him to take an interest in nature. The stop in Qingyang village was just the nail in the coffin.
Meng learns about people's steps to produce the high-quality teas his father loves so much. It's an interesting process, but the workers always have cracked and damaged hands. There isn't enough healing salve to go around, they explain. It's too expensive, and we can't make our own since the ingredients are rare. When Meng returns to Liyue Harbor, he studies up for the entrance exams and wins a scholarship to the Akademiya. Throughout his time at the school, he frequently takes up research projects that let him visit home. His experiments focus on providing affordable medications that can be bought or made no matter which region you were in. This mix of Liyue and Sumeru's Akademiya is reflected in his design. It's an intense mix of both the merchants of Liyue and the professors of Sumeru. He mostly travels in between those two nations, so his outfit is only influenced by those two nations. He's very put together and neat, wearing pants and minimizing accessories so he can work at the drop of a hat.
Fei always wanted to go to sea. Liyue is a nation of gold and history. Every rock and flower has a story to tell, and he felt like there were endless things to discover. The sea was just as mysterious, and he wanted to travel across those blue depths. In the game, it's obvious he looks up to Captain Beidou and wants to be a pirate captain like her. As the trio hits puberty, Fei's confidence grows, and he focuses his attention on learning how to be a sailor. Manager Xiao takes him under his wing (after some begging), and Fei flourishes in the dockyard. He teaches Fei about the finer points of dockyard maintenance and how to complete the paperwork for certain orders. Wrench Wang and Hammer Li show him the physical side of the job, like repairing leaks quickly when you're taking on water or how to align a keel the right way.
Eventually, Manager Xiao dies, so he's out of the job. Fei bounces around from ship to ship, eager to make himself useful. He learns to haul in crabs and fish for Uncle Gao and Uncle Sun, how to tar ropes and prepare sails from Captain Wei, how to preserve large batches of food from Chef Mao, manage resources even when he's at sea from Gou San'er and Ms. Yu, file the right permits for foreign merchants like Ivanovich, and Shitou and Bolai hire him to import precious goods. Uncle Tian shares his secret tricks for fishing, although Jiawei argues the advice is all wrong. Fei even helps Reekwind find his missing spear, which is a miracle in itself. Fei makes himself invaluable to his fellow seamen and traveling merchants, just like his two friends have done in their chosen professions.
His ability to work at any station on a ship has taken Fei all over Teyvat. He earns himself an electro vision like his idol, Captain Beidou, and becomes one of the youngest pirate captains in Liyue history. All this is reflected in his design. Fei wears bits and pieces from all the (currently available) nations of Teyvat. He's hung out with the Eremites, learned Inazuman fishing techniques, imported dandelion wines from Mondstadt, and still finds time to visit home regularly to see his friends. He's adorned himself with gold and small jewels-he is a pirate-and makes a pretty penny delivering extremely fresh produce. (Well, that's what it says on the legal documents. Sometimes the Qixing hire him to...dispose of other pirates or Fatui boats.)
In the end, the little pirate gang, who used to play around the ships all day, grows up to be some of the most influential people in the world of merchants. Lulu inherits Ying'er's store and spearheads a new line of beauty products shipped across Teyvat (at an affordable price, of course.) Ningguang recommends them personally, which definitely helped the process.
Meng graduates from the Akademiya with top marks and becomes famous for his research and humanitarian efforts. He revisits well-known medicinal formulas and recipes to improve their effectiveness, makes new compounds using common materials such as sweet flowers or mushrooms so they're available to everyone, and establishes both disaster relief and learning programs in multiple cities. (Because as long as the Traveler is around, Teyvat will need both programs to guarantee a good future.)
Fei never reaches the same heights of public infamy that Beidou does, but instead establishes a small fleet of new transport ships that are faster than a swordfish. Only the Waveriders, which are not made for long-distance travel, can compare. Fei holds a monopoly over several parts of the underground markets, which would get him arrested or captured if he didn't have extensive information about every shady merchant he ever worked with. :) If the other unsavory types wanted to land his ass in jail, he was taking them with him. Due to this iron grip and vast reach, Fei had no issue delivering materials to his friends or taking care of the dirty sides of their businesses. Whether they actually knew about that last part or not didn't matter.
All three leave behind a vast legacy that is continued for generations to come, benefitting Teyvat as a whole. The Traveler just wished they could play 'pirates' with the group one last time, but sometimes life gets in the way. All the Traveler could do was visit their graves, leaving blooming lotus blossoms behind as an apology.
Sometimes immortality was a curse.

softer shippy things :: closed
@remunporium sent: [Sit] --sender sits in receiver's lap. For yanfei from taotao.
One of the last things you want to do is compare Yanfei’s work ethic to Ganyu’s. It’s easy to do, of course. Seeing her out and about around Liyue Harbor and the greater part of the country itself she’s rarely idle. But this half-adeptus would be far more eager to argue that she makes time for hobbies and her other relationships. Granted, she’s far more eager to argue in general but that’s not important here. And yet, it can also be argued that sometimes she gets too involved.
Another night finds the legal advisor working through evidence and notes for a new client that had been frauded by a visitor during the Lantern Rite festival. Now that the festivities were largely over, it was time for her real work to begin. Archons have mercy once she gets to some of the tax issues some people will need assistance with. To think, you give out pamphlets and other media and there are still those that get confused? It’s pretty ridiculous. But work is work.
But she’s gotten a little too deep into it.
One moment Yanfei has closed her eyes, summoning up the energy and deliberation to cross reference another appendix. The next moment there’s a ‘plop’ and they find a certain lovely lady occupying their lap. Their hands resting on her shoulders, and that distinct toothy smile casting a light over her more than any lantern could dream of doing.
Tumblr media
“I don’t even have any room to rebuke myself. You don’t have to say anything, Taotao.” Yanfei surrenders quickly, and Hu Tao’s grin softens into a smug smile as she makes herself ever more comfortable. Another victory in pushing the legal advisor from their work. It’s not hard to guess who has the most wins in that regard.

[ Childe]
Tumblr media
"Alright, Mister Zhongli, would you please show us the way?"
Childe is annoyed and displeased with the outcome, but he manages to mask it well with his smile. It seems his lovely dating moment will have to wait a little bit. He kept his arms around her, earning some whisper inside the Northland Bank. After all, no one knows who is the girl that earned his affection like that. Childe might be a family-oriented person, but he is quite merciless as well. Even so, he had a good reputation because he was easy to get along with, earning that much income. He didn't want her to get along with others and make her choose other people's sides. She would be happy in the Fatui, he knows it. They would be able to have spare moments every time, having a mission together and going on a challenge together. Childe thought Zhongli would take them to his friend's house, but no. He took them to the mountain Area, where Adeptus stays. The place is higher than any other place in Liyue. It has ponds in the middle and a table for there. "So, where is your friend, Mister Zhongli? " said Childe as he crossed his arms, wondering whether the person he was talking about was the Adepti. Suddenly, a woman with beautiful long hair, wearing glasses comes to them. She looks awkward talking to them like this. "Oh my, for one second there, I thought the person you were talking about was the Adepti" said Childe as he narrowed his eyes.
He saw both Zhongli and Xianyun cough awkwardly. This is a new additional information for him. After all, childe isn't foolish. He knew it the moment he saw her. Good thing is, this adepti is not a male. He can't have his princess surrounded by men all the time. He knew she is amazing, but she belongs to him and no one else. The possessiveness in his heart grow even stronger than before. As Zhongli introduce them, Childe smile politely. " I guess, there is nothing wrong with spending time making a kite. After all, this will be your first lantern rite. Isn't that right?" Childe pinch her cheek teasingly before he ruffled her hair in an an an endearing manner. He wasn't sure why would he took them here, but he was sure that they had hidden motives about this. More importantly, why would Zhongli knew adeptus place? How weird. Well, at least he could learn something. It would make Teucer and the other kid happy as well. It's win-win solution. As they talked, Childe secretly looking at her. Taking her beauty frame into his mind. She is perfect the way she is and it's only fuelled the darkness inside of him to have her. He will do anything to keep her by the side even if that's mean she had to ruin or break her will. He will do it, he will make sure that no one lay their hands on her. Out of nowhere, Zhongli suddenly touch her cheeks. However, Childe ended up gripping his wrist before he could touch her. "A dust isn't? Don't worry about it. I'm here to take care of her, and swep any dust in my way." Childe lift her chin so she could stared at him before he placed his lips on her cheek. "See? There is no dust now" Childe know what he had done is out of line, however he didn't care. He is fallen to deep into his desire. It's only the matter of time till he completely fallen and take her away for himself. Locking her, where only he could see.
[Zhongli and Zianyun]
Tumblr media
Zhongli keep stealing glances over her, she somehow feels familiar or is it about her power? Did she have something within her that made him feel familiar? Perhaps Xiangyun would know if he took her to him. Besides, Lantern Rite is near, it would be great if he could spread the happiness as well. It would be risky to take Fatui Habringer there, but it was worth it. She doesn't seem like any part of Fatui or would join Fatui anytime soon. "Please follow me and be careful of your step" good thing the mountain is not slippery. It rarely rains nowadays. After quite some time, Zhongli took them to the Adeptus Mountain with beautiful scenery. "Please wait a moment" he walked away for a moment and approached Xianyun who was in her bird shape. When she saw him, she slowly shifted back to her human figure "Before you say anything, I have my own reason. I would like you to teach them, how to make a kite for lantern rite and in the process-" Xianyun raised her hand before she put her glasses on. "In the process, you would like me to see whether something was wrong with her or why would you feel this familiar. Am I right?" Zhongli looked quite surprised with what she said. "So, you knew?" Xianyun smiled proudly as she crossed her arms "Of course, I do. Let me handle it. You can rest assured." Zhongli felt relief and both of them walked to where Childe and Demetra were. "Sorry for the wait, this is Mrs. Xianyun, my old friend. She's here to study about the mechanical stuff that the Adeptus left behind. She's been here for quite some time." Childe doesn't seem to believe him. His next words made both him and Xianyun cough. "O-of course not, ahem. Who do you think I am?" Xianyun crossed her arms, trying not to give it away. "Anyway, I will be back with some kite material. Please excuse me" Xianyun decided to leave that place quickly, while Zhongli stayed there. The winds felt nice, he could smell the scents of flowers nearby. Did She plant flowers somewhere? "Why don't we all sit down on that chair while waiting for her? I can assure you, she had talent in this stuff." Zhongli's eyes wandered to her once more. He could be that childe getting annoyed, yet he decided to pay no mind to him. Why does she look so familiar? Who is she? He had a feeling that she wouldn't give the real answer even if he asked her.
"Please excuse me...there's dust on your face" The moment his finger nearly brushed against her skin, Childe stopped him, gripping his wrist. "A dust isn't? Don't worry about it. I'm here to take care of her, and sweep any dust in my way." Much to his surprise, He really did show how much he loves her. Zhongli had lived around 5000 years and he knew what kind of human he was, and what would he do, he had to separate them quickly. His desire needed to be contained or it would harm her.
[Ruka]
Tumblr media
Falling asleep, Ruka curled up under the big tree. The book and some papers were scattered around her. Her white long hair was rather messy with pink petals around her. She let her guard down when she fell asleep. She looks so peaceful and fragile, unlike her usual self. Zandik is the first person that she meets, other than Aether whom she treats with kindness. It's obviously not because of his handsome face of course. "Hmmnn Aether..." Ruka is a heavy sleeper once she falls asleep. It will be hard to wake her up. "I meet someone handsome.....Zandik" Ruka continue to sleep soundly, while often whispering something in between. Suddenly the strange creature that doesn't seem from Sumeru emerges from the ground, circling around her. That creature doesn't seem a fan of Zandik and hates to see him close to her. Her screeching voice made Ruka jump from her sleep. "Wha- hey! Bad girl! Stop it! Are you going to harm him when I fall asleep?! " the creature closed its mouth and flew towards her, nuzzling to her hand. "Ugh, my dream is just about to be good. Uh Good morning Zandik. Or is it night? Sorry to surprise you, are you alright? Is your research fine? Sorry about this. Her name is Vayah. She had been with me ever since I was a kid. Don't worry, she actually understands human languages." Vayah slowly started to disappear beneath the ground. However, Ruka knows better. She is the creature of the abyss and will always stay around her, protecting her from the shadow. When she ran a hand through her long white hair, she realized it was a mess. "Ah uh uhmn....wait a moment please.." Her face was completely red from embarrassment as she tried to fix her hair and tie it into a ponytail. "Ahem, anyway I'm glad that you had a great time, I wonder if we can hang out again some-" When she walked to him, she accidentally stepped on a book and crashed into him. What made her nearly die from embarrassment is...she accidentally kissed his lips.
The days of doom
(Genshin impact roleplay)
  [Childe]
He put the portal a little far from the Liyue harbour. He didn't want anyone to see him like this. The place seems calm and peaceful as always. Many traders come and leave from Liyue harbour. As expected of Liyue Qixing, she is indeed Pantalone's rival in terms of business. However, the city looks rather lively than before. They even added some decoration as well. Ah, is it nearly Lantern Rite? What a perfect timing! This would be the very first time he took her to Lantern Rite. It seems they decorated it with the statue of Yaksha and kite. He saw many children trying to fly the Jade Chamber kite. Some of them choose a whopper flower kite. Maybe, he should make his own kite later.
"Now, Welcome to Liyue Harbour my princess~ we should go to Northland Bank and take some cash. Besides, we came at the right time. See those decorations? They're preparing for Lantern Rite tonight. I bet they even hired Wushu dancing this year. I'm sure you will like it. Shall we go now?" Childe winked at her teasingly. It would be great if she could make up her mind and join Fatui instead. That way, he could keep an eye on her. Unfortunately, what Childe didn't know was that he wasn't the only one who would keep an eye on her. A man with a half mask sensed a portal nearby. However, he couldn't feel any abyss presence at all. Putting his money on the table, the man leaves the tea house and checks whoever it is. If they weren't the abyss, perhaps he could ask them how they did it. If they were the abyss, he had to get ready to fight.
"uh, sir?" Dainsleif shook his head and waved his hand at the waiter. "You can take the change." The waiter looked confused, he stared at the money before looking back at him. "Uh..actually, you gave me less than the price...you need 1000 more." Dainsleif went silent for a while. "Ah, I see...my apologies. Wait a moment.." When he wanted to take mora from his pocket, he couldn't find it. 'Wait, where's my mora?' He kept searching around and still couldn't find it. "Wait, don't tell me...that kid- ugh...I never thought today would be a bad day. Excuse me for a moment. I will go back here once I get my wallet" Dainsleif quickly ran out, he need to find his wallet quickly and find whoever that was! "Sir! You can't leave without paying! You there, call security catch him!"
--------------------------------------------------
Inside Liyue harbour, Childe took her to Northland Bank. They welcomed her warmly and provided the amounts he asked for. After all, he is the harbinger. Even if he is the last one, he still did some work to raise their finances as well- ah, wait a minute, if she joined the Fatui, that does mean she will meet Pantalone as well. Ugh, he loves those more, but his monologues are too long for him to handle. Not to mention, the crazy doctor and his segments as well. Somehow, he started to change his mind about her joining the Fatui. Shaking his head at his random thoughts, Childe filled in the paper before the receptionist gave him the mora. "So, why don't we take a look at the kite? I'm sure you would love it,  or perhaps we should taste delicious food at the Pavilion? After all, master doesn't have a good taste...or maybe we should make a kite instead?"
"Making kite? That does sound like a good idea...it's rare to see you do it with your own hands. I still remember the time when you paid a large amount of more to make a custom kite" A young man in a perfectly neat suit appeared behind them. He smiled warmly at both of them. He bowed at Demetra like a true gentleman. "Good evening miss, I am Zhongli, working in funeral parlour as a consultant. It's rare to see Mister Childe with someone as beautiful as you." Zhongli always acts like a true gentleman, even in the way he speaks, he chooses his words carefully. "Ah, Mister Zhongli. Good evening, I never thought I would meet you again here." Childe's expression remains the same, however, his body language is different than before. He pulled Demetra closer to him as if to show him that she belonged to her.
"That's right, she is my friend. Perhaps deeper than a friend. I want her to enjoy her first Lantern Rite"
"is that so? I had a close acquaintance who was an expert in making kites. Perhaps, I could introduce both of you to her? Of course, it depends on you miss."
Both Zhongli and Childe stared at her, waiting for the answer. Zhongli seems curious and would like to know her better. As for Childe, he is acting childish and possessive.
[ Ruka ]
"Is that so? entertain me then~" She winked at him playfully. It's been a while since the last time she spoke to another person. This person seems interesting enough, at least more interesting than the other akademiya student she stalk observed. There's another person that she kept her eye on, what was her name again? Soh- something? Instead of those technology from Khaenriah, she chooses to study animals from forests instead. She's quite unique, maybe he knows her?  "Ah, I saw one girl around the forest, she studied animals..what was her name again? Sohre? Shore? Sometimes she sneaks out as well, maybe you know her? Or perhaps you can relay a message later. If she kept doing that those animals could be the death of her. Well, now, how about we go and see more of those ruins Zandik?  I know someplace that may look interesting to you. I won't accept No for answer. Considering this as repayment that I saved your life." Actually, this is only a reason to get to know him better. She can't be a creepy stalker all the time. Aether kept reminding her to not be seen by others for the sake of their plan. Sometimes, she wondered why those people were so curious about Khaenriah. After all, they're doomed with the curse of immortality. Some of them even turned into a monster. Only a few of them survive including her. Ruka felt grateful that Aether saved her life on time. She could never forget what happened that day. Shaking her head, she put those thoughts deeper into her mind and walked ahead of him, showing the way.
After 1 hour on the roads...
"those damn eremites.... seriously! Do I look like a spoiled elite girl or something?!" A long tiring sigh escaped from her small lips. Kicking the unconscious eremites on the ground, she gave him another smack just for her own satisfaction. Those eremites were guarding her secret tunnel and it made her furious that they found her secret alone place. Perhaps someone hiring them to find out about those sites? "Ahem, sorry about that. So, here is the secret tunnel that I found. Great isn't it?" Ruka grinned, feeling proud that she could find a secret path in a foreign land without Aether. She placed her hands on the late vines that close the entrance. Whispering the secret words, the vines slowly retract themselves. "Now, let's go to this cave" She pulled his hands and showed him what the cave could offer. As she kept pulling him, they went deeper underground. However, the sights are definitely worth it. "So, what do you think about this one?" There's a large tree in the middle, it's such a beautiful scenery. Under the there are purple carpet and some fluffy dolls that she brought. "Ahem, I just trying to make myself comfortable. Anyway, the one you are looking for, is over there" She pointed at another path across the tree. She quickly shows it to him. There are surprisingly a lot of ruins guards and the biggest one remains intact. "Oh! Here, I take off the circuit since it keeps firing missiles. Why don't you enjoy yourself now? I will be right there under the tree. You can come to me first when you are finished." It should be alright since he won't take a long time...right? Let's hope Aether won't scold her about this. Walking away from him, she decided to take a rest and lay on the carpet, closing her eyes for a while. The quietness of this place calms her mind, maybe it is alright to take a nap for a few minutes...

On Screen (SAGAU 1)
about: conversations with the characters as you play the game. it's only a matter of time before the divine creator descends.
note: this fun drabble series focuses on interactions with the characters. they are all aware that they are "playable characters" and they recognize you as a higher sort of god.
༻✦༺ ༻✧༺ ༻✦༺
"It's just- I saved so much primogems for you yet I still lost the 50/50." You explain to Xiao. The yaksha stands idly above Pervases' temple, the only place you can talk to him as a non-Xiao haver. Thank archons for the lantern rite festival allowing you to see other characters!
"Conquering demons is what I do. With or without your help, I'd still continue my work." To Xiao, you were an almost dream-like voice in his head. He knows that you exist as a form beyond his world and that they were made for you. This awareness was something ingrained in every being of Teyvat after all, especially for the vision holders.
"Still... I guess I just really want you to have the Primordial Jade Spear. Hutao is using it for now, but I'll be sure to get her Staff of Homa eventually." You smile, and although Xiao couldn't see it, he feels a warmth easing his karmic debt.
Later, he wonders how he could get on a meteorite for your "wish". He doesn't quite understand the complexities of the sacred texts. Maybe he should ask Zhongli for help.
༻✦༺ ༻✧༺ ༻✦༺
"Let's go, time is against us."
"I know you're busy, Keqing, but I just need to run through this domain real quick." You say as you place her in your party next to Zhongli.
"Hm? I'm surprised to see the Wangsheng Funeral parlor consultant here. I know you're quite skilled in many aspects, but I didn't expect it to extend to combat as well." Keqing says, facing the man next to her. They were standing in a space-like area of constellations, the party screen while you decide on who else to add.
Zhongli simply smiles, "Oh. I'm quite familiar with sparring, but the rest of my abilities thanks to this divine guidance." What a big fat lie, you think
You laugh nervously, wondering if it would be alright to use his burst or if it would resemble Rex Lapis' powers too much. As you add the next characters on the screen, you notice Keqing and Zhongli talking away.
"You... have Rex Lapis plushies in your home?" Zhongli tries to hide the amusement in his voice, but the sly smile he hides behind his hand was evident to you.
"Not that I idolize him or anything. It's merely like any other citizen of Liyue. What are a few items of their god?" Keqing tries to cover up her situation with a growing blush, eyes averting away. How Zhongli managed to coax out such information is beyond you.
"I see. I'm somewhat the same. Not quite a fan, but I am interested in his many stories." He smiles and you facepalm.
༻✦༺ ༻✧༺ ༻✦༺
"Stop fighting or I'll leave the two of you in the party screen overnight!" You scold the two brothers men.
Kaeya shakes his head, "This wouldn't be happening if someone isn't so obsessed with his hatred over the knights."
"Obsessed? Me?" Diluc scoffs, looking away.
You sight, you just want to finish this event quickly.
༻✦༺ ༻✧༺ ༻✦༺
"Ningguang, I'm sorry!"
"You... had me swim in my own pavilion." Her face was one of frozen shock, clothes soaking wet.
"I'm really sorry! I completely forgot that you don't like that. I'll um- I'll ascend you to level 50?"
"I have no interest in combat."
"I'll ah- earn more mora from the leylines and spend it in the harbor?"
"Hmm... Those leylines do generate quite the amount. Make it two leylines and I'll consider forgetting this ordeal."
"Deal!"
"And please, don't bring Ganyu or Keqing with you. We're short-staffed as is."
༻✦༺ ༻✧༺ ༻✦༺
"The Fatui?!" Diluc glares at the starry space of the party screen.
"Aw comrade-" You quickly take Childe out of the party, switching him with Jean.
"You left literal children with a Fatui harbinger-" The pyro user says in exasperation, hand quickly rubbing at his forehead.
"Klee had fun! Mister said he's the greatest toy salesman in all of Teyvat!" Klee chirps, jumping up and down, "He said he'll give me a ruin guard toy! They're called um.. sai.. saiclops? Mr. Cyclops!"
Sayu continues napping in a corner.
"He's safe, I promise! He won't hurt anyone here!" You say to your screen. Diluc opens his mouth to reply but was promptly cut off by Jean.
"I'm sure their divine holiness is right. We don't have to worry as long as she's watching over the children."
Jeanluc moment, you think to yourself. Maybe you should expose them to their own ships next time?
"Fine.." Diluc sighs, crossing his arms. "Although now there's another problem — we are not bringing children to this domain. What is their grace thinking!"
"It'll be fine! The level is low and I'll use a DEF boost. No one's getting hurt." You quickly say, "Besides, Jean can always burst heal in the worse case scenario!"
Diluc grumbles in defeated and Jean hesitantly nods her head. Wait till they see Klee's damage output, you think.

A new life?
Part 4! I want to deeply apologize for making you all wait almost 4 days for the next part, time goes by faster than i thought. I swear, i blinked and it was suddenly Thursday. Oops i guess?😆
If you havent read part one, click here. There are links to each consecutive part at the end of each piece. enjoy! <3
Contains: Angst, Hurt/comfort
Overview: Travel-worn and tired, you arrive at Liyue Harbor only to realize you've arrived in time for a festival? Is this the city's way of greeting you? Telling you you're welcome here?
Gn reader, "You/Your" pronouns used
Tumblr media
All across the golden fields and high mountain peaks, traces of evening had started to show.
Around this time of day, most travelers would seek a place to make camp to rest and await a new day before continuing on.
But the scent of salt on the breeze spurred you on, telling you to follow the whispered promises of the ocean ahead.
With the sun having dipped out of sight behind the mountains to the west, the oppressive heat of the day began to dwindle, making a coolness settle over your travel-weary body.
Liyue Harbor was farther than you first thought, having walked every day for almost a week.
You were exhausted.
When you had first left the City of Wind you had no idea as to where you would go, spending your first night in a small roadside inn just southwest of Springvale on the outskirts of Dragonspine's icy landscape.
You were sorely unprepared to travel at all, having on hand only the few things you had brought with you from home, but you felt uneasy about purchasing anything from merchants in Mondstadt. These merchants always had a tendency to go to taverns after a long day and drunkenly gossip about recent happenings and findings on their recent travels.
What if they were to recognize you and let slip to someone you knew where you were headed? What if they heard the talk about your disappearance and recalled seeing you headed to the next nation over? You couldn't risk that. Not so soon.
Not before you could even try. ‎‎
You promised yourself a new life. Nothing from the past should follow you into it. Otherwise it wouldn't be new, it would just be different.
You promised yourself a new life, and a new life you will have.
It will just take a lot more effort than it first seemed.
Earlier that day, after walking for what felt like an eternity, you had found yourself walking alongside many other travelers who were chatting among each other. You had caught bits and pieces of conversation, hearing talk about some festival, but being too tired to join in on the discussions, opting to just listen.
A festival? ‎
No wonder there were so many people heading to the city at once. Most seemed to be locals, living in the villages scattered around the land, likely heading to the main city to reunite with family and friends. Some others looked to be travelers from other nations, seeming excited to take part in the promises of merriment.
The cobblestone road you walked on gently sloped upward until it evened out, letting all the people see what awaited them. Standing at the apex of the path, the air in your lungs escaped you in a gasp at the sight before you.
There was the ocean you had been smelling on the breeze for the last mile, surface choppy with waves cresting with the push and pull of the tide. Cradled between the mountains and sea like water in your hands was the city in all its glory.
There could have never been a better time to travel to Liyue, for what you didn't know, was that you had arrived in time for the nation's largest festival, The Lantern Rite.
Shining more brightly than the setting sun itself, the city was studded with countless glowing lanterns, seemingly more numerous than even the stars. With the darkening sky as a backdrop for the golden lights as they floated out of the Harbor and over the ocean, the spectacular sight had many a traveler stop in their tracks to admire the view alongside you.
So many lanterns...
You heard from someone once that Liyue's Lantern Rite had a tradition to send off lanterns, each carrying its owners wish off to the heavens...
Your heart ached.
If only Diluc could be standing here with you...
You would have wanted to share this sight with him...
Letting a lantern be carried by the breeze, holding your wishes for a long and joy filled life...
If only...
Tumblr media
After the last traces of daylight faded, evening had given way to night, but from within the city one could hardly tell.
Brightly colored streamers hung from the roofs of every stall and building, and the walkways were glowing with warm orange light from the many the lanterns strung from post to post. Your ears rang with the clamor of cheerful voices and laughter.
It was dizzying. Everything was new and strange. You felt so lost, but for the first time in weeks, it wasn't an unpleasant feeling.
But it felt...
Lonely...
If only you could share these sights with...
...
Walking through the bustling streets and down stone steps, you find yourself on the docks, where people were releasing lanterns. Everyone was so happy...
You could see families and friends laughing together and couples walking hand in hand, pointing out the beautiful decorations.
But the happiness of the people surrounding you was not shared by you.
You were alone.
You had no one to share the joy a festival brought with.
Was this really going to help you feel better?
A mother and two children approached you,  having noticed you looking dejectedly at everything around you. Longing for something.
"Everyone should make a wish tonight, Traveler, may your wish be granted and bring you happiness," the mother told you, handing you a lantern before taking her children's hands and disappearing into the crowd before you could refuse it.
Surprised at the sudden arrival and departure of the woman, you stare after her before turning to look at the waxed paper structure you now hold, still feeling alone despite the countless amount of people around you on the dock.
A wish?
'What would I even wish for?'
...Would it even come true?‎
With a lantern in hand, you walk further down the dock, thinking about the kind woman that gifted you the handmade lantern.
Why would she give you, a stranger, a gift?
She didn't know you. And why you in particular?
There were hundreds of people in the city. Why did she approach you?
As you walked, lost in thought, the clamor of the crowds slowly dissipated until it was almost completely quiet. There were very few people this far down the docks, all silently looking at the gold-specked night sky, likely wanting some rest from the bustling streets.
Everyone was so kind to you here...
Despite not knowing who you were, nor where you were from, they were kind.
No one looked at you harshly, or spoke to you unkindly.
You were welcome here.
...is this the place where you should be?‎
Lighting the candle inside the paper dome, you walk to the edge of the pier holding the now glowing lantern over the water.
Taking a deep breath, you let go of the lantern, watching it steadily climb to join the rest.
You wish that you will be able to mix in with the other people here, just as your lantern mixes in with other's lanterns, each carrying their owners wishes. You silently thank the kind mother that gifted you this chance.
You hope her and her children's wishes come true too.
You hope the Archons bless her family for the kindness she showed a stranger.
'maybe...'
You watch your lantern until you can no longer keep track of it, as it truly blends in with so many others.
'...maybe this is the right place for me.'
Tumblr media
Brilliant lights fly around you as you spin, your movements as graceful as a scarlet ribbon flowing through air. Joyful laughter and music mixing together beautifully.
For the first time in weeks, you were happy.
When you first entered Liyue Harbor, you were nervous.
Would someone here recognize you? With so many travelers, there was bound to be one from Mondstadt right? Someone who would have heard about you, someone who knew your family?
You were afraid that word of your disappearance had spread so far. Would you not be welcome anywhere anymore?
Would you be destined to always be unwanted?
But after entering Liyue, you were proved your worry was truly for nothing.
You were welcomed by everyone, and you didn't feel as lost as you thought you would. You weren't the only outlander there, many others having been attracted by the promises of beauty and wonder, also looking to feel the warmth only friends can bring, all being only a fraction of what this jewel of a nation can give. Such is the way of Liyue.
You had somehow ended up dancing with the people, the music drawing you to the city center filled with singing, laughter and dancing. Your grace making every move you made look effortless, and your laughter like pure music, your happiness was contagious, making everyone around join you in dance.
It had been less than 2 weeks since you left Mondstadt, but at that very moment, being surrounded by new people who did not have a single care for who you previously were yet danced with you all the same...
Even now, multiple days into the festival, after you had met new people and there they were, dancing with you as though you had known each other for years.
It felt as though this truly was the nation you were meant to be in.
Your wish just might have come true.
Because this truly was the right place for you.
Maybe a new life isnt as far away from your reach as you first thought...

❝happy lantern rite!❞
Tumblr media
// various genshin impact characters x reader // gender neutral reader // aether x reader // xiao x reader // ganyu x reader // lowercase intended //
a/n: AAH I LOVE LANTERN RITE SO I HAD TO WRITE SOMETHING!!! also this isnt what i said i have in my drafts but i wanted to feed my kids while i have inspiration with these headcannon type things!
Tumblr media
Aether - Traveler From Afar
✦ OMG LIYUE!!
✦ OMG LANTERN RITE!!
✦ OMG FIREWORKS!!!!!
✦ to say the least, you were excited
✦ last year's celebration had lanterns instead of the quick flashes of colors and you have gotten a newfound appreciation for fireworks since then
✦ (probably from hanging out with yoimiya)
✦ so when you heard that they were doing fireworks this year in liyue you immediately went to your traveling boyfriend
✦ since he was planning to go anyways you too set off to liyue to stay for a week or two in honour of lantern rite
✦ but for some reason wherever you two show up trouble is always a foot
✦ when keqing asked you two to help talk to the adepti and thank them in lantern rite her assistant for the festival came to report to her that the fireworks went missing
✦ oh no! :0
✦ but girlboss keqing handled it (so true) so you two didn't have to beat up some treasure hoarders
✦ yet.
✦ but anygay lets talk about the romantic stuff you and aether did
✦ yall played all the games and lit the fireworks you could
✦ while lighting the fantastic voyage firework aether accidentally put it in upside-down so instead of a 👍 it was a 👎 but red yk
✦ goddamnit aether
✦ AND HE WAS TRYING TO DO SOME ROMANTIC THING WITH IT TOO
✦ but when it was a thumbs down instead of a thumbs up he panicked and started apologizing sooo much
✦ poor baby :(
✦ reassure him, tell him its ok and that you still love him :(
✦ lantern rite best event. true and real.
Xiao - Conquerer of Demons
✱ xiao my baby :(
✱ imagine the year prior the traveler wanted to take him to lantern rite and now he has you and YOU wanna take him to lantern rite
✱ welp guess he's gonna start going to lantern rite now
✱ yay! :D
✱ if you would want to go to the city to spend lantern rite with your other friends and invited him along he would hate every second of it
✱ one because he's in public and crowds arent really his favourite
✱ and two,, so,, may,, senses,,, omg,, so much smells,, so much noise,, it gets overwhelming for someone whos not used to it like you are
✱ or someone whos neurodivergent😀
✱ but he bares it for you
✱ probs cause he likes to see you smile while talking to your friends and showing off your super cool and hot and really awesome bf!!
✱ and the fact that your so proud when you say it
✱ xiao:🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
✱ hes whipped for you and everyone knows it
✱ you better be whipped for him back istg🩴
✱ but if you decide to say at wangshu inn for lantern rite xiao would definitely be more comfortable
✱ so you either rent out a room or you stay in xiao’s own private room
✱ look idk if he has one but lets give him one for story sake
✱ unfortunately, xiao is one of the ones who have to “work” for the holidays
✱ well its not really work

Part 1 , Part 2
________________________________________________________________
The weather looked like it wasn’t about to change any time soon, meaning that going outside to take a walk together was no option for Xiao and I. After I brought our dirty dishes back down into the kitchen I returned to Xiaos room, finding him laying on his bed again. His face was turned towards the window and he used the blanket as a body pillow. It took some time until he noticed that I had returned and the now very familiar blush returned to his face.
“Can I join you?”, I asked in a soft voice, not wanting to sound like I was pressuring him.
“Uhm…yeah. Sure”, he answered and moved so I could crawl onto the bed too.
As soon as I had found my position on the bed I noticed how Xiao scanned my face with his eyes, as if he was trying to figure out what I was thinking right now. I softly smiled at him and watched as his hands fiddled with the blanket.
“Are you sure it’s ok to stay with me?”, he suddenly asked with a slightly nervous tone.
“Yeah it’s fine. Don’t worry about it”, I assured him and watched him sigh.
I wasn’t sure if it was a sigh of relief or if it was a sigh of some other kind. Xiao looked like there was still something bothering him. After all this deep talk yesterday and this morning it seemed that he had realized that it was ok to share his feelings with me, even if it was just by bits and pieces. After a while Xiao began to speak again.
“If I make you feel uncomfortable…you can tell me. I don’t want you to just go along with me out of pity”, he whispered more than said those words.
His sudden doubt of my sincerity confused me a lot. I had no idea where these sudden thoughts came from. Why did he assume that I was feeling uncomfortable with him here? Maybe he had been overthinking again while I was gone to take the dirty dishes down. I scanned the bed for a second before he continued to talk again already.
“I know that you humans don’t like it too much when people are too…what do you call it again…’clingy’?”, he continued and my confusion grew even more.
I questioned myself if I had done something that would make him assume that he was being clingy but nothing came to mind. He wasn’t entirely wrong with his assumptions about humans but I didn’t think that he was clingy. Especially not right now since there was a gap between the both of us since I wanted to give him some space after everything that happened today.
Then it hit me. Did Xiao assume that I thought he was clingy because I had put some space between us? I had to shake my head and a little laugh escaped my lips. This couldn’t be the reason why he thought that. Right? Xiao looked at me with a little worried expression as he noticed my slightly amused face.
“Is it funny to you that I’m feeling insecure?”, he asked and I shook my head.
“Xiao, do you want to cuddle?”, I asked and his eyes widened as my words reached his ears.
I guess I just hit bullseye.
“How did you…”, he began to say in disbelieve that I had instantly understood what was going on in that brain of his.
“You assumed that I was uncomfortable since I put some space between us on the bed and thought that you came across as clingy. Instead of asking me why, you just thought of the worst outcome in your head. I just assumed you were thinking like I used to. So the only reason you could have asked me that was if you wanted something that would categorize you as clingy”, I explained my thought process and watched Xiaos face drop a little.
“So I really am that predictable?”
I shook my head and opened my arms as a sign for him to come closer.
“No. We just really think alike. I guess that is a mindset you can’t strip off even if you overcome your loneliness…Soooo…Do you want to cuddle or not?”, I asked and watched as his eyes began to sparkle a little.
“Yes. I would love to cuddle with you”, he said with a soft smile on his face before he abandoned the blanket and moved over to lay down on top of me.
Half of his weight was resting on me now. Xiaos arms were wrapped around my waist, his leg was laying between mine and his head rested on my chest. My hands instantly found his back and his hair again before I started to softly stroke his head. I felt him relax in my arms and watched as he snuggled closer, making my heartbeat speed up a little. He was just too adorable. After some time of comfortable silence he began to speak again.
“Tell me about your day”, he mumbled.
“My day?”, I asked curious.
“Yeah. I wanna know what you did before you came here yesterday”, he explained and nuzzled his face against my neck just like a cat.
“Uhm…alright. I got up in the morning pretty early since there was a lot to do. I had promised Xinyan to help her set up her stage, Xiangling had asked us to come taste some new dishes she wanted to prepare for the Lantern rite and Huixin wanted to teach me how to make Xiao Lanterns so I can help prepare them for the big finale. I was pretty excited you know? I don’t usually get to help with such a big event so I was really looking forward to see what I can contribute to the event.”, I started to explain and noticed how Xiao tensed a little.
“You really wanted to help with making these useless lanterns?”, he asked almost annoyed.
“Yes. You might think they are useless but for the festival they are really important. They are supposed to act like beacons to guide the heros back to their homeland.”
“But they are just polluting the ocean once they fall into the water.”, Xiao continued to argue.
“You’re not wrong with that but I’m sure that Liyue will make sure that they clear the water from the remains of the Lanterns. You really don’t like the Lantern Rite, do you?”
He moved so that he could turn his head towards me.
“I just don’t understand why people make such a big fuss about this event. They are only focused on their festivities and totally forget that while all their focus is on that no one is out there to keep them safe. You have no idea how naive these people are thinking that nothing will happen during the festivities. If it wasn’t for me patrolling whenever I can they wouldn’t even be able to hold the Lantern Rite every year.”, he explained and I could see how upset this made him.
“I can understand your point of view but you also have to consider their view. They wait an entire year to celebrate this festival once and the entire city loves and cherishes this tradition. It brings them so much happiness in such a short amount of time and I’m pretty sure that the people of Liyue know that you are keeping them safe. Apart from that, if you wouldn’t care about the festivities and the people of Liyue you wouldn’t risk your life for them, right? And don’t start with arguing that it is your duty to keep them safe”
Xiaos facial expression changed to a more neutral one as he thought about my words. He laid his head back down on my chest and stayed silent for some time. I continued with my stories about the preparations and noticed that he now just listened interested and didn’t question my actions anymore.
“So you are telling me that you had been working the entire day and you still thought that it was necessary to check up on me even though you were already exhausted from work?”, Xiao concluded as I was done with telling him about my day.
“Yes? I mean I didn’t really consider all that work. I was just helping my friends make their work easier.”
“Unbelievable. You really are a workaholic.”, he said which made me laugh slightly.
“I’m just doing what makes me happy and it doesn’t matter whether that is helping my friends or checking up on my favorite person”, I said and smiled brightly at Xiao.
My words made him a little flustered again. A light pink was visible on his cheeks and a small pout was drawn on his face.
“Don’t say things like that as if they were nothing. You’re making me misunderstand”, he complained and hid his face behind his arm.
I just couldn’t help myself seeing him this shy. I softly ruffled his hair and watched as he grabbed my hand from his head and held it in a tight grip.
“Don’t make fun of me. These feelings are overwhelming and I don’t really know how to deal with them so just give me a moment.”
“I’m not making fun of you Xiao. I just think your reactions are cute that’s all”
Xiao now removed his arms from around me and sat up.
“See this is exactly what I meant. How can you just say these things without overheating from embarrassment? Is that what you become when you get used to these feelings?”, he asked and fiddled with the ends of his sleeves.
“If you really think I’m calm around you then you are wrong. I know you heard my heart race in my chest with your head resting right over my heart. If that wasn’t enough for you to know that I’m just as nervous as you then I don’t know what else I need to do to prove that I’m everything but calm around you”, I explained and noticed the heat shoot into my cheeks as I admitted that.
As Xiao watched my cheeks darken his face flushed even more. We both were just flustered messes right now. I tried to change the topic so it wouldn’t be too awkward for too long.
“Uhm…Actually while we were already on the topic of the Lantern Rite I actually did have to tell you something”
Xiao looked at me with a questioning look. Maybe he was already assuming that I would ask him to watch the final event together with me. I took one last deep breath to regain my composure a but more before I continued to talk.
“I actually didn’t completely tell the truth this morning when you asked me why I came here. Yes the main reason why I came here was because I wanted to check up on you but there was also another reason.”
I already noticed that Xiao started to look a little nervous. I reached out to cautiously grab one of his hands to reassure him that whatever I would say right now was nothing to get nervous over. He stared at our hands for some time before he looked right at me, gesturing that I should continue to speak.
“The other reason was that I wanted to ask you something. I now know why you don’t like the Lantern Rite that much but I’m still gonna ask. Would you accompany me to the festival? You don’t have to come into the city with me. We could just watch the final event from the mountains if you don’t want to be in a huge crowd of people. It’s not that I can’t go to see it by myself but it’s my first time seeing it in person and I really wanted for it to be special so I thought I could spend it with someone special but I can completely understand if you decline. I mean I would probably decline too if I had your reasons…Maybe I shouldn’t have asked when I already know the outcome.”
I kept on rambling about my reasoning before I was stopped by Xiaos words. I was so lost in my mumbling that I didn’t even really hear what he had said.
“What did you say?”, I asked with an apologetic look since I felt bad that I didn’t listen to him well.
Xiao sighed and a small smile appeared on his face for just a second before it turned back to his usual serious face.
“I said yes. I’ll accompany you to the festival if you want it that bad”, he said and I could almost not believe what I just heard.
“Did you just say yes?”, I asked more to myself than towards him.
“Yes I did. Don’t make a big fuss about it though. I’m just doing this f-“, he couldn’t finish his sentence since I had already pulled him into a tight hug.
“-or you”, Xiao finished his sentence before he wrapped his arms around me too.
“Thank you so much. I never would have thought that you would agree. That really makes me extremely happy.”, I admitted and moved away from the hug again to smile at him.
Xiao looked surprised at my emotional outburst but he somehow also looked a little proud of himself. He shook his head for a moment before he flicked my forehead.
“Ouch. What was that for?”, I protested and rubbed my forehead.
“Don’t get too excited before I change my mind again”
“Ok…okay…I will not be excited. Please don’t have me go alone. I really want to watch it with you”
“I get it already. I will go with you. Just don’t expect too much.”
I nodded eager and watched as he shook his head again and rolled his eyes. I couldn’t help but smile like an idiot. I was just extremely happy that I would get to watch the coolest event with a special person.
Some time passed since we had that conversation about the Lantern Rite. After the storm and rain outside had finally stopped Xiao had gone back to his duty of patrolling Liyue. While he was gone I decided to ask Verr if there was anything I could do for her while I was staying at the Inn with Xiao. Beside some little chores and errands I couldn’t really help a lot so I spend most of the day just sitting up on the balcony waiting for Xiao to return from his patrol. He had asked me to take me back to Liyue Harbour but I insisted on staying at the Inn with him so we could go to the festival finale together tomorrow. As I was watching over the landscape of Liyue I notice just how much I missed Xiao. Ever since this morning I had noticed my feelings change even more than before. I knew that I was slowly developing feelings for the untouchable adeptus. At first I thought it was just pure adoration for a friend but the more time I had spent with him, the more I noticed that there was much more behind all this. The butterflies in my stomach were speaking more than thousand words while I was around him and I knew that these feelings I had developed wouldn’t fade any time soon. I must have been so lost in my own little world that I didn’t even notice the wind behind me until a voice appeared behind me.
“You called?”, I heard and turned around to see Xiao in his usual clothes standing there on the balcony looking at me with worry on his face.
“I did?”, I asked back just as confused as him.
“I heard you say my name and rushed over here. I thought something happened and you needed my help but you look fine to me”, he explained and scanned me with his eyes, checking if I had any injuries somewhere.
“I guess I mindlessly called your name while I was lost in my thoughts. I apologize. I didn’t want to worry you for no reason”, I apologized.
Xiao stepped closer towards me and placed his hand on my forehead.
“You don’t have a fever but you look a little under the weather. Go inside and lay down for a bit. I’ll come and check on you again when I’m done”, he ordered and I just nodded.
“Alright. Be careful out there. And come home soon”, I said before I walked back into the Inn.
As I arrived at Xiaos room and laid down on the bed I only realized what I had said on the balcony.
“You idiot. What do you mean ‘come home soon’? You sound like a lovesick person”, I scolded myself and buried my face in the pillow.
I was so embarrassed that I couldn’t fall asleep for some time. The sleep must have gotten the better of me though since I only woke up when it was already dark outside. As I turned on the bed and looked around I noticed that Xiao still wasn’t back. I got up from the bed and walked past the table when I noticed a piece of paper laying on it. I walked closer and picked it up.
“I saw that you were still sleeping and I didn’t want to disturb you. I’ll be on the rooftop above the balcony when you wake up ~ Xiao”, I read out loud and had to smile.
I placed the paper back on the table and left the room to go to the balcony. As I stepped out on the wooden floor I took a deep breath of the fresh air. It still smelled a little like rain even though it hadn’t rained for hours now.
“You’re awake”, I heard from above me before a breeze of wind blew over me and Xiao appeared before me.
“Yeah. I guess I really needed that sleep. Thanks for checking up on me. I guess we are even now”, I said laughing.
Xiaos small smile faded before his face turned serious again.
“I really was worried when you called my name. Please just do that when you’re really in need of help. I don’t think I can handle getting a scare like that regularly”, he scolded me and I nodded quietly.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to do that. I guess I just really missed you”, I mumbled the last part of the sentence hoping he wouldn’t hear it.
Looking at his shocked face told me that he heard exactly what I said. Xiao cleared his throat once while his cheeks turned a light pink again before he began to speak again.
“Just…be careful, okay? I don’t want you to get yourself into danger or even get injured.”
“I’ll be more careful with my words. I promise”
“Good. Now come”, he said and reached his hand out towards me.
I hesitantly took it and gasped surprised as he quickly pulled me against him before teleporting us back onto the rooftop he had stayed on before I came out here. A blanket was neatly folded next to us and two pillows laid next to it. A blush creeped onto my cheeks as I noticed that he probably prepared this for me. I sat down on the roof and Xiao joined me shortly after.
“Are you cold?”, he asked after some time.
“Uhm…yeah…just a little though”, I stuttered and watched as Xiao unfolded the blanket and wrapped it around the both of us.
“We don’t want you to get sick, right? You need to be alright for the Lantern Rite tomorrow”, he explained and watched me as I looked at him.
I was astonished by the view. Not only was Liyue gorgeous at this time of the night with the stars and the moon as only light source but the view on Dragonspine from here was just as mesmerizing. I leaned over and grabbed the pillows and placed them behind us before I laid down and looked up at the sky. As I turned my head towards Xiao I noticed just how close we were right now. His eyes were focused on the night sky and he looked so at peace. Like there was nothing in the world right now that could disturb his inner peace. This moment was just beautiful and I wished I could stay with him like this forever.
“I can feel you staring at me you know”, I heard Xiao say after some time before he turned his face towards me.
“Sorry”
I was embarrassed that I couldn’t keep my feelings and actions under control. Somehow Xiao was the unfazed one right now. He just looked back at me for some time before I turned my face back towards the sky since I felt like my face was slowly turning into a tomato. As I watched the stars I suddenly felt Xiaos hand near mine. Without any warning for my heart he slowly intertwined our fingers and watched my face from the corner of his eyes to check if this was ok.
“The sky is really beautiful tonight”, he said in a soft and quiet voice and softly squeezed my hand.
“Y-yeah. It really is”, I answered and squeezed his hand back.
If he wouldn’t have squeezed my hand this would have felt so surreal but it really was happening. I really hoped that he wasn’t able to hear my heart pound in my chest since it was really quiet up here on the roof. But at this point I was sure that Xiao didn’t need to hear my heart race to know that I was extremely nervous right now. But apart from that I was just as happy as I was excited. I wished this moment would never end.

Spending lantern rite with Hu Tao:
Trope: fake dating → real dating
characters: Hu Tao x gn!reader
warnings: none
Tumblr media
Your two best friends were a couple. You were happy for them, but every time the three of you would hang out together, you would always end up as the third wheel. Lantern rite was just a week away which meant that everyone was talking about who they’d spent the festival with.
When you were asked by the two of them, who you would spend the day with, you lied to them and said it would be a surprise and they’d see it on lantern rite itself. With every lie you dug yourself deeper and fuelled your friends expectation.
You were aimlessly pacing around Liyue harbour, hoping that something would magically save you from the consequences of your actions. It had become evening and the sun was slowly starting to set. You were so deep in your thought, that you hadn’t even noticed Hu Tao trying to jumpscare you. It was just when she literally shook you out of your trance that you acknowledged her existence.
You two knew each other, she would prank you often, maybe even more frequently than Chongyun. And while that may sound as if were being tormented by her, most of her pranks were followed by the two of you hanging out. Your and Hu Tao’s relationship was what might be called a friendship and if you remembered right, friends were supposed to help out each other. And so you asked her to be your date for the lantern rite. As friends of course, even though you clarified that only after she already accepted.
The day of the lantern rite has finally come and everyone was happily spending their time in the decorated city. You found yourself in front of the Funeral Parlour since Hu Tao told you she would have to do some work prior to the festival. But after she finally arrived, still dressed in her normal clothes, you two spent until evening different shops.
It was then, that the two of you met your friends. Them being surprised to see that the director of the Funeral Parlour was your promised date.
“I always asked myself why the two of you hung out so often, but it makes sense if you two are a couple. Although I have to admit that I didn’t expect that you would be able to keep it a secret for so long”, one of them commented causing you to furiously blush. Just as you wanted to correct them, you felt Hu Tao link her arm with yours.
“I guess that means they also haven’t told you the other stuff”, she said in her typical mischievous fashion. When she was asked to clarify, she merely responded with a giggle and a smug aimed at you. There was no other stuff, you were sure she only said that to embarrass you and worst of all, she succeeded. Your head now probably containing more blood than the rest of your body combined. But your friends now both stared at you, so you had to tell them some embarrassing stories supposedly containing you and Hu Tao to finally get them to back of. Your date with Hu Tao, while originally being thought as a get-out-of-your-self-dug-pit-free-card, only made you dig yourself deeper with your lies.
After your friends had left the two of you alone you had remained silence for quite some time. Thinking about why Hu Tao had lied about being a couple. While it did embarrass you and so could count as a prank, it surely would be hard for her to get out of it herself.
“What’s up? You’ve been awfully quiet since your friends left. Miss them?”, she asked teasingly, her arm still linked with yours.
“Why did you lie back there?”, you finally asked while stopping in your tracks.
“Lie about what?”
“About us being a couple”, you clarified. Watching as Hu Tao’s confused look slowly turned back into her typical smug. Why it would have been a lie to say, that you were against the idea of actually dating her, it was a weird prank of hers.
“Was I really lying? We spent the entire day eating and looking through different shops together. Isn’t that what couples do on lantern rite? And let’s not forget that you were the one that invited me”, your arms were no longer hooked and she was now standing right in front of you staring at your face while her smile didn’t even falter.
“I-I invited you as f-friends”, you stuttered while refusing to look her in the eyes, as you were too embarrassed to. If this was going to continue, you were sure, that the missing blood would cause your legs to collapse.
“Good, then I really lied back than. We should probably try to find them and explain everything before they spread it”, she said in her usual happy voice, while taking your hand and trying to drag you in the direction of the terrace, since that would probably be were your friends would be to watch the firework-show. But you didn’t move an inch.
“O-or we could… actually start dating. S-since then there would be nothing to apologise for”, you suggested with a shaky voice while still staring at the ground. If she was entirely against the idea, she wouldn’t have lied in the first place. Or so you hoped. Some time passed without you or Hu Tao answering, but when you finally looked up at her, you could see her practically beam with joy.
“I don’t know. I think I’ll have to think about that for some time”, she said as if she’d really have to consider it, even though her tone gave away, that the decision has already been made.
“Let’s not just stand here, there are fireworks waiting to be seen”, and with that she started to drag you away.

I was wondering I read the Xiao x a sucidal reader and I was wondering if you could do a imagine for that if this is too much please don’t and stay safe drink water and eat and please enjoy your day ^^
Lantern Rite Wishes
xiao x (gender neutral) reader cw: suicide, depression, angst note - somehow the imagine became longer than intended (・・;)
He was just going to get some fresh air and then he’d come right back inside. There was absolutely no way he was looking for you because it was a beautiful night and the lanterns lit up the sky like pieces of sweet, wondrous dreams—
Xiao shakes his head to dispel such thoughts as he steps out into the open, surveying just how empty Wangshu Inn has become. Everyone who isn’t obligated to work is down at the festival, spending time with friends or taking in the sights as a couple. He was going to watch from the balcony, where he’d be alone and unbothered by the usual hustle and bustle of Wangshu. All those plans seemingly evaporate the moment he notices your figure balancing on the ledge, one foot extended outwards.
He’s not sure what overcomes him when he rushes forward, seizing your arm and roughly pulling you backwards. A yelp escapes your dry throat. Just moments prior you were teetering on the edge, teary-eyed and wondering if anyone would miss you. Now you’re falling into someone’s chest as they wrap their arms around your trembling frame in a bone-crushing hug. Your stomach drops when you finally hit the floor, the wooden boards creaking under the combined weight of two people.
For a moment, you struggle to escape Xiao’s hold, but he remains unyielding. It’s during your hiccuping sobs that you finally hear him.
“Why?”
It’s the only word Xiao can utter. Over and over in a confused, pained loop. The thought of watching you fall to your death hurts him, and even though he can’t fully grasp the reasoning behind that feeling he knows it must be a result of your suicide attempt.
“I...don’t know.” Words weigh heavy in your mouth, and your tongue trips over itself in an attempt to explain yourself. But you truly can’t. Why did you do that just now? Were you actually going to jump? “I’m just tired.”
Tired. A word that holds so much meaning. Tired of work. Tired of mundane schedules. Tired of the disconnection between positivity and depression. Tired of life. It’s all so exhausting and the only solution would be to die. That must be it, right?
“You don’t know?” Xiao’s still holding onto you when he mutters that question, his expression clouded in grief and anger. “Why not? You’re a mortal! You should value your life a little because you won’t get another.”
The harshness to his tone startles you and it prompts more tears. Under the lights of thousands of lanterns, the scene should bring happiness and peace. But you’re just sad and tired and absolutely fed up with life.
“I’m sorry, Xiao. I didn’t—“
“Don’t apologize.” His grip loosens slightly and it’s as if his own composure follows. “Just...don’t do it again. If you’re not going to value your life, I’ll value it instead. So don’t do stupid things you’ll regret.”
It wounds your resolve to hear him refer to impulsive desires as stupid and foolish, but it also warms your heart to hear him say he’ll value your life. And you can’t bring yourself to argue. Had you jumped and avoided his outstretched arm, you wouldn’t have had any time to regret the action. Would Xiao have saved you even as you were falling? You’d like to think he would, but even miraculous fantasies remain within one’s mind. And in this reality a dozen alternate scenarios could’ve happened. For instance, Xiao could’ve avoided the balcony and you would be dead.
Your fingers dig into his backside as you finally return his hug. “I’m just tired. I didn’t know what else to do...” A heavy sigh escapes you in that tense moment. “I wish I didn’t feel so lost.”
Xiao realizes he’s been holding you for quite some time and he pulls away in a barely composed fluster, his cheeks reddening ever so slightly. In an effort to change the direction of the conversation, he latches onto the thought of wishes. “Well... I was going to watch the lanterns from here, but then I saw you. I guess we could go see the festival together—if it’ll cheer you up, that is.”
You look at him in mild shock, not having expected him to take the initiative to invite you. “Oh...”
“But you’re probably still scared after what just happened. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. Mortals and fear...”
Your breathy laugh startles him. He’s always referring to you as a mortal, as if that’s all you are in his eyes. Although you’re still shaken after your attempt, you feel a little safer knowing he’s with you. And while you may just be another mortal, the fact that he saved you must count for something. Xiao can go on and on about how useless mortals are, but to step in when one was about to commit suicide—perhaps he does have a heart.
“I should thank you for doing that. For stopping me before I could actually do it, I mean.” Your heart hammers in your chest as you prepare to spill your emotional guts in front of the adeptus. “Truthfully, I haven’t been well in a long while. And I don’t think I’ll get better anytime soon, but...I want to forget about tonight. So maybe seeing the festival with you will chase a few bad thoughts away...”
Xiao’s staring. He realizes he should blink and actually say something, but the words won’t form. You’ve always been an honest person, but he’s taken by surprise at how quickly you agree to see the festival. It’s an ideal distraction, isn’t it? All sorts of negativity muddles his brain and he wonders why you’d want to see the festival with him. He’s not exactly a cheery person and you’re not mentally well either. For some reason, he feels compelled to weasel out of this situation—to deflect and avoid it before he freely allows himself to experience this pathetic thing humans call ‘fun.’
“Actually, I think making a lantern would be nice. I could write so many wishes on it. It might even make me feel better, too!” You’d like to think that a simple lantern wish will solve all of the murky depression in your life, but it’s just wishful thinking. “And you can make one with me! We’ll write our own wishes.”
“I guess...”
“Come on. It’ll be fun.” You stand on unsteady legs—legs that would’ve broke once they made contact with the ground—and offer your hand. “You can’t get out of this one, Xiao. I’m going to drag you there whether you like it or not.”
He deadpans as he begins to regret his own decisions. But his hand still finds yours and he allows you to pull him up from the floor. Your smile might not shine as brightly as it did before, but it’s still a step in the right direction. And you’re a resilient person; you’re bound to bounce back after this. It just takes time and patience to heal—two things he can easily spare for your sake.
Xiao won’t make any wishes for himself. Rather than selfishly wishing to erase centuries of karmic debt, he’ll scrawl something unlikely on the surface of his lantern. He wouldn’t be able to live with himself if he’d let you fall, and so he hopes that his wish will come true.
And when your lanterns join the others in the inky sky, Xiao feels relieved to have you by his side, your warm hand gripping his and an infectious smile pulling your lips upward. Your life has so much meaning. It’s just a little foggy and you can’t see it, but Xiao will shine a light through that dark fog to help you reclaim that meaning. In due time, you will find happiness and he’ll be there to guide you to it on a bumpy path.
Without realizing it, his love for you blossoms and it’s a quiet flower shrouded in its own darkness.
No matter what happens, give (Name) the happiness they deserve. That’s all I’ll wish for.
