#i cant explain why catholic jigen is funny

ok on the topic of catholic jigen (because im catholic as well n my dad n therefore my whole family spends a lotta time in the church i gotta keep myself awake sometimes yknow)

i love to imagine that while jigen rarely shows his religion, hes in a church at some point with the gang n hes just doing the standard stuff one does in a church naturally n easily meanwhile lupin thinks the hail mary is a type of cocktail and goemons shinto, they never had a lotta time in a church so seeing jigen act so natural is like "breh"

half of my family is also incredibly catholic like my grandparents went to church everyday. not every sunday, every damn day. so that's part of the reason i'm so fixed on this hc of jigen. it's also just kind of funny lol

i also don't think he's religious per se but it's at least somewhat engrained in him from his childhood and upbringing. again, his family maybe weren't the strictest catholics ever (i hc he did do communion and stuff but like....halfheartedly). but a lot of catholicism is about mindset and the view of life as a whole as basically penance, guilt, and suffering. there's definitely a parallel to jigen's character here. life is certainly not easy for him, and he carries a lot of weight around. some of it, rightly so, he's done a lot of bad stuff. but other times he needn't. particularly guilt is something that weighs on him a lot. not just for the fact that he has hurt people, but also he knows deep down he enjoys the chaos and violence of his work.

i wouldn't say he repents as such, he's certainly not attending confession. but he will pass a church at certain times, quietly pray, and light a candle for someone. it's not something he will tell anyone about. he just feels compelled to in the moment. lupin & co have found him stepping out of the doors of a chapel a few times, hat held to his chest. they can't imagine what he was doing in there other than killing the priest.
