Are You My Mother? by Alison Bechdel: I really loved Fun Home but this one was not on par. Bechdel really got into Freudian psychoanalysis before writing this one and it's pretty excruciating to read about a dream about hiking or whatever that actually represents her troubled relationship with her mother

Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky: This book was VERY conservative Christian. Dostoevsky would be saying it was wrong to shoot that CEO, that's basically the book actually

Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke And Other Misfortunes by Eric LaRocca: VERY poorly written. All women in this also only had one personality trait: wanting to be pregnant

John dies at the end by Jason Pargin: Too stupid to keep reading. It was a webnovel first so it does the nonstop cliffhanger thing I hate about webnovels but doesn't have anything else really going for it. The humor got old fast

Woman, Eating by Claire Kohda: The subtitle was "A literary vampire novel" which should have been a warning. MFA book about a depressed vampire getting frustrated with a FedEx employee. This is a good example of "write what you know" can be the worst advice to give to boring ppl

Nightbitch by Rachel Yoder: Another example of a literary horror book (see above) that sucks bc the literary author thinks they are doing something very unique and elevating stinky dumb genre fiction

Kalpa Imperial: The Greatest Empire That Never Was by Angélica Gorodischer: Honestly just kind of boring. Short stories are easier to dnf bc it's easier to find out if it's not going anywhere you care for

The Infinite and the Divine by Robert Rath: This is a Warhammer book, my partner is really into Warhammer and he listened to all of TLT so it only seemed fair but I think I needed more than a passing familiarity with the lore, way too confusing

Luck in the Shadows by Lynn Flewelling: Being gay doesn't save it from being boring as shit

An Island Princess Starts a Scandal by Adriana Herrera: I was excited for a Latine wlw historical romance, any Latine genre fiction that isn't YA or short stories excites me bc YA or short stories feels 90% of the Latine genre fiction available in the States. But this just was too poorly written to enjoy

The Viscount Who Loved Me by Julia Quinn: Sometimes the adaptation is MUCH better. Also poorly written

Dawn by Octavia Butler: Okay before you throw stones at me, I was REALLY enjoying this one. I just have a phobia of something that was introduced and had to stop. Scifi hates me personally bc it loves this trope. This one would actually be my biggest disappointment of the year but in a "how could you do this to me" kind of way

Genesis of Misery by Neon Yang: My frustration with this book cannot be quickly summarized, a cool concept very poorly rendered

Witch King by Martha Wells: This is like if you stripped Murderbot to only the characters talking about the plot. It is painfully boring

I did not think it was humanly possible to like Maurice book more than I already liked the movie but HOLLYYYYYY SHIT! boy do I!! I just love gay people so much holy shit. Em Forster on his way to drop the most obscenely grotesquely beautifully human prose the world has ever seen. Queer classic lit is wild cause I am just like. Yeow.. people were young and scared and felt the exact same feelings and thought the exact same thoughts I did decades and centuries ago.. also idk their personalities and the emotional turmoil and the whole opening scene makes WAYY more sense in the book. I am on ch 14 and very thrilled to see what the future holds. So far ch 7 9 and 13 were like wow what if I was coughing up blood rn!!!!! I just am madly in love with every gay person who has ever and will ever live and I'm glad we will be here forever because we make the world better and i wish even more of our historical art was preserved . But anyway I am grateful for James Baldwin and Renee Vivien and Sophia parnok and Sappho and radclyffe hall and Leslie feinberg and em Forster and vita Sackville west and Virginia Woolf and collette and riyoko ikeda and god I love gay people keep making art forever!! I'm about to defend men rn, so feel free to tune out, but in my defence this will probably be the only time😂

"Gay men used to hang out with trans ppl, isn't it all so obvious who let the TRAism in?" Ok but lesbians also hung out with trans people (hasn't anyone watched The L Word these days?) the thing was that back then these trans people were same-sex attracted and stuck to their respective sex-based lanes. Tims with the gay men, tifs with the lesbians. And those trans people were a minority even among gays and lesbians. Many just had internalised homophobia, it was a regular discussion in the homosexual community, but at the end of the day our sex-based interests as homosexuals were all aligned. What changed with TRAism was the invasion of straight trans people.

Suddenly straight men were identifying as lesbian and invading lesbian spaces. They didn't have internalised homophobia, they had a straight man's privilege and entitlement. And they outnumbered us. Where did these straight men come from? Gay mens' spaces? The same gay men who have historically been so mean to (mostly heterosexual) transvestites that it's the reason for the "exclusionary white cis gays" trope? The same gay men who are the reason trans people were unwelcome at the Stonewall Inn and later at pride events? Those gay men?

Or do you think it was perhaps the demographic who exploded in population right as TRAism took off? Who have always espoused those homophobic ideas like "hearts not parts" and "sexuality/gender is fluid"? Whose identity politics have always served both their own interests and the interests of the straight men with which their lives are, statistically speaking, so very centred around? Whose obsession with finding ways to bring their men into lesbian spaces could fill several tomes? I am of course speaking about bihet women.

Now I understand it's never been popular to acknowledge the problems that bihet women have caused, especially to lesbians. They're a majority group, they can be counted on to tick the "yes I support marriage equality" box, they're all the things homosexuals do desperately need in order to have any hope of living a normal life in a society filled to the brim with groups so utterly opposed to us. But at the end of the day, you cannot just excuse someone of all criticism because they did a good thing one time.

I especially find it ironic that "gay men invented TRAism" is a popular hottake rn when bihet women, with the same identity politics that exist symbiotically with TRAism, are sitting pretty within the (straight) women's rights movement under the untouchable status of political 'lesbianism'. If your arm is looking to pull off one of your legs, maybe it should start with the leg proselytising about how straight women can identify as lesbians, which is somehow different to men identifying as women. But I digress.

So here I am on gay men's side for this one. Sure gay men can be problematic, I call that out when I see it too. For example, I see gay men reacting to this latest saga, which has been orchestrated nearly entirely by straight women, by pointing the finger at lesbians and saying "but, but, but the statistics show lesbians love girldick". And the majority of people who ticked 'lesbian' for these studies are the aforementioned bihet women and their men. The only thing these surveys are proof of is how lesbians have suffered the most from TRAism. Throwing lesbians under the bus for something straight women are doing ain't no better than throwing gay men under the bus for something straight women did. Instead how about we all join hands and acknowledge that straight people are the common denominator to every damn problem mentioned in this essay?

Even so, gay men being dumb ain't gonna cause me to come out here and support someone using homophobic slurs and being racist. Idc how many pedophiles they've busted, no one is above criticism, especially when they're doing shit that really needs criticising. You can applaud a publication (that routinely ignores the lesbian side of a story & routinely forgets to mention all the trans-identified men they feature are straight) having a go at gay men. You can invent fantasies about where TRAism really came from to justify it. But what's the point? Where is this new ideology going to lead you? You think the conservatives smashing the like button on this new excuse to hate gay men in a woke way are going to support women's rights beyond the kitchen?

Anyway, I dunno, I think a lot of the above could be solved by people just not being so damn reactionary. Get out your feelings and focus on the facts. I promise, the facts are so much more interesting and it's only through the facts that gays and lesbians have ever and will ever get our human rights.

I saw @jadelotusflower do this and thought it looked fun!

The last book I read: I'm in the middle of a CaPri reread, so technically the last book I read was Captive Prince by CS Pacat. Before that, though, I read this really niche middle grade called White Sands, Red Menace by Ellen Klages that was the sequel to one of my favorite ever childhood books - it's a historical fiction about two girls whose parents are atomic scientists in the 1940s and it was fantastic.

A book I recommend: So, so many. I think rn I'm gonna have to say Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner, because I just finally got a copy of my own and I'm dying to reread it. It's blurbed as a "cult classic fantasy of manners", with bonus gay swordsmen, and I love it to death.

A book that I couldn't put down: Most recently, it was Master & Apprentice by Claudia Gray, which I've been meaning to read for years and it did not disappoint. One of the best Star Wars books I've read in ages.

A book I've read twice (or more): I've read Party Shoes by Noel Streatfeild every single summer for probably close to 15 years - it's about a family planning and putting on a pageant that steadily grows in scale as they go, set in 1945 England. It captures the atmosphere of preparing for a show so well, it makes my performer heart happy.

A book from my TBR: Just one?? There are so many (The Sunshine Court, House of Flame and Shadow, and Ghosts of the Shadow Market are a few notable, overdue ones). I am determined to get to the third Locke Lamora book, The Thorn of Emberlain, this summer - even though it'll mean I've caught up on all the Locke books that have been published.

A book I've put down: I'm trying to get better about DNFing, so I don't struggle through books for no good reason. Most recently was The Beast of Beswick by Amalie Howard, a histrom I had heard good things about but which ultimately contained scenes with dubious consent.

A book on my wish list: I'm gonna cheat and pick two - I'm dying to have a copy of Band Sinister by KJ Charles, which I absolutely loved a few months ago, and I cannot wait for Swordcrossed by Freya Marske to be released later this year.

A favorite book from childhood: I think I'd have to say The Penderwicks, by Jeanne Birdsall. It had everything I wanted in a book - an older sister, a rebellious girl, a writer, a mansion, a scene with pretty dresses, and lots of adventures I would never dream of having - and I read it countless times.

A book you would give to a friend: It would depend on the friend! For some reason the one that comes to mind is The Chosen and the Beautiful by Nghi Vo - a slightly magical retelling of The Great Gatsby from a queer female perspective. It was under 300 pages, with a familiar story, but absolutely stunning writing.

The most books you own by a single author: It's probably Sarah J Maas. I have all 8 books in the Throne of Glass series, plus two duplicates, and then five others from various other series.

A nonfiction book you own: Sex Matters by Alyson J McGregor, about the dangers of the male-centric medical and pharmaceutical world.

What I'm currently reading: I've got a couple going rn - Prince's Gambit by CS Pacat, Emma by Jane Austen, and Gods & Monsters by Shelby Mahurin (via audiobook).

What I'm planning to read next: Kings Rising, obviously, and then probably Immortal Longings by Chloe Gong.

the only reboot i want where everything ends/begins in tragedy is a marauders reboot. would it destroy me? absolutely. do i want it anyway? yes. this, however, is a travesty. this doesn't even have good bones for a story. enemies to forced lovers to would-have-divorced-if-we-didn't-diers? also, more white people? more straight people? how the hell do j*hn and mary apparently "save the world" by the way? wasn't j*hn mary's small town girl? i can already see how this is gonna go. black screen opens, dean makes a comment about how he's in heaven, getting to hear the whacky stories about his parents falling in love based on lies and cupid's poorly-aimed arrow, and then crazy shit happens for a few seasons (god pls i really, really don't want multiple seasons of this), and then it ends with mary on the ceiling and j*hn shouting, "dean, take sammy and go!" and then it either ends there or dean's voice fades in to say, "but we're all dead and happy, so it's okay! it took a while for me and my brother to get here, but that's another story..."

hiiii so i know u like classics/ancient roman stuff — how does one get into that? like what books do u recommend etc etc

HELLO and ok i’m so not an authority on this because i’m really just getting into the classical antiquity scene myself..but probably the start of my ancient rome madness was shakespeare’s julius caesar which i CANNOT stress enough slaps so hard. ***not like fully historically accurate i gather, but i love the drama and i’ve been delighted that actually most of roman politics WAS that dramatic in reality. cut bc i love to run my mouth

in terms of books i haven’t been reading that much because school term :-// but i read erich segal’s classical comedy anthology (aristophanes’ birds, menander’s samia, plautus’ menaechmi, terence’s eunuchus) recently because i wanted something free and easy and i liked the roman ones (plautus & terence)! recommend if you’d like something mindless (though ancient comedy does still tell u important stuff about society at the time) BUT much caution because as with a lot of classical antiquity the plays deal heavily with rape and misogyny (ancient comedian voice: watch how hard i can hate women!!!)

for poetry i’ve been in the middle of ovid’s metamorphoses (horace gregory’s translation) for a while but i like what i’ve read, like that the myths are split and small enough to uhh eat one at a time. ovid = snack real…….other stuff on my reading list are rubicon and attis by tom holland who other than being a critically acclaimed young british actor has also written some fantastically insightful historical non fiction …… this is a joke clap if you wish

what i HAVE been consuming however is loads of podcasts. they’re fantastic because i can put them on while i’m doing work..it’s really like SING MUSE! OF THE BATTLE OF PHILIPPI. come hither fair bard and play me some mother f*cking odes. in particular The Ancients which is on spotify and has loads of stuff on ancient history and the like; the guests on the show are all historians/classicists who’ve written about the content of their episode so if you like the topic you can do the further reading really conveniently. i recall that battle of philippi episode in particular made me very upset about cassius and the collapse of the roman republic….it’s a little scattered sometimes but i like it because it makes me feel like i’m piecing together gossip bit by bit. E.G. i think on one of the cicero episodes they mentioned his clodius feud and i, very unlearned at the time, went CLODIUS? OF THE CATULLUS BITTER BREAKUP POETRY FAME? WHO IS THIS GUY and i found other episodes of other podcasts about him and they just kept saying things. the scandals didn’t stop. #problematicfave #prettyboysupreme #legitimateplebeiantribune #gangleader

speaking of catullus YES also read catullus’ poetry. most of it you can find online and gay people on tumblr me included do translations like they’re being held at gunpoint (honestly maybe one of my favourite ways to consume translated works though it’s about the personal yet communal nature of it….sharing verses..sigh..) AND—re podcasts, i heard the cicero audio drama is really good, but it costs a bit to listen to and i haven’t figured out how debit cards work so that’s on hold for me rn, but i’m PLOTTING

ik you asked about ancient rome but ...read war music by christopher logue recently and ooohhh goodness. it’s great!!! i love fight scenes and the like so i suppose it appealed directly to me but it’s really cool in general (iliad books 16-19 translation/adaptation but guy didn’t speak greek at all! and it F*CKED! my idol). i’m in the middle of cold calls atm. i’d recommend the actual iliad but i can’t yet because i’m terrible, glossed it until i got to the river fight scene and haven’t gotten around to my reread, though i like caroline alexander’s translation a fair bit from what i remember. anne carson has loads of really good stuff but i’m biased bc autobiography of red cracked my head open and drank the meat the first time i read it. Float’s a great collection too and has the plus side of looking really pretty in a shelf. also gotta start the euripides play collection i got, eventually…! will update

hmmmmmmmmmm maybe i’ll write an Introspective Musing Post about my relationship to religion and their depiction in stories because i’ve pondering about this topic lately

so for those who are reading this and DON’T know what’s been going on...  there’s this webcomic i fell in love with some years ago, about six years actually, that depicts a post-apocalyptic fantasy/horror adventure set in the nordic countries. it had, and has still, some very uncomfortable flaws regarding racial representation, and the creator has historically not dealt very well with criticism towards it. it’s a whole Thing. my relationship with this comic has fluctuated a lot, since there are a lot of elements in it i DO love and i still feel very nostalgic about, and like idk i felt like i trust my skills in critical thinking enough to keep reading. aaand then the creator went a teensy bit off the deep end created a whole minicomic which is like... a lukewarm social media dystopia where christians are oppressed (and also everyone is a cute bunny, including our lord and saviour jesus christ). which is already tonedeaf enough considering there are religious people who DO get prosecuted for their faith, like, that’s an actual reality for a lot of people - but as far as i can tell, usually not christians. and then there’s an afterword that’s like, “anyway i got recently converted and realized i’m a disgusting human being full of sin who doesn’t deserve redemption but jesus loves me so i’ll be fine!! remember to repent for your sins xoxo” and a bunch of other stuff and IT’S KIND OF REALLY CONCERNING i have, uh, been habitually looking at the reactions to and discussions around this, maybe it’s not very self care of me but there’s a lot of overwhelming things rn and it’s fantastically distracting, yknow? like, overall this situation is fairly reminiscent of the whole jkr thing. creator of a series that is Fairly Beloved, does something hurtful, handles backlash in a weird way, a lot of people start taking distance from Beloved Series or find ways to enjoy it on their own terms, creator later reveals to have been fully radicalized and releases a whole manifesto, and any and all criticism gets framed as harassment and proving them right. of course, one of them is a super rich person with a LOT of media power and a topic that is a lot more destructive in our current zeitgeist, and the other is an independent webcomic creator, so it’s  not the same situation. just similar vibez ya feel as a result of this, i have been Thinking. and just this feels like some sort of defeat like god dammit she got me i AM thinking about the topic she wrote about!!! i should dismiss the whole thing!!! but thinking about topics is probably a good thing so hey lets go. me, i’m agnostic. i understand that this is a ‘lazy’ position to take, but it’s what works for me. i simply do not vibe with organized religion, personally. (i had the wikipedia page for ‘chaos magic’ open in a tab for several weeks, if that helps.) i was raised by atheists in a majorly atheist culture. christian atheist, i should specify. norway has been mostly and historically lutheran, and religion has usually been a private and personal thing. it turns out the teacher i had in 7th grade was mormon, but i ONLY found out because he showed up in a tv series discussing religious groups in norway later, and he was honestly one of the best teachers i have ever had - he reignited the whole class’ interest in science, math, and dungeons and dragons. it was a real “wait WHAT” moment for my teenage self. i think i was briefly converted to christianity by my friend when i was like 7, who grew up in a christian family (i visited them a couple times and always forgot they do prayers before dinner. oops!), but like, she ALSO made me believe she was the guardian of a secret magic orb that controls the entire world and if i told anybody the world would burn down in 3 seconds. i only suspected something was off when one day the Orb ran on batteries, and another day the Orb had to be plugged in to charge. in my defense i really wanted to be part of a cool fantasy plot. i had no idea how to be a christian beyond “uuuuh believe in god i guess” so it just faded away on its own. when i met this friend several years later, she was no longer christian. i think every childhood friend of mine who grew up in a christian family, was no longer christian when they grew up. most notably my closest internet friend whose family was catholic - she had several siblings, and each of them took a wildly different path, from hippie treehugger to laveyan satanist or something in that area. (i joined them for a sermon in a church when they visited my town. my phone went off during it because i had forgotten to silence it. oops!) ((i also really liked their mother’s interpretation of purgatory. she explained it as a bath, not fire. i like that.)) i have never had any personal negative experiences with christianity, despite being openly queer/gay/trans. the only time someone has directly told me i’m going to hell was some guy who saw me wearing a hoodie on norway’s constitution day. yeah i still remember that you bastard i’ve sworn to be spiteful about it till the day i die!! i’ve actually had much more insufferable interactions with the obnoxious kind of atheists - like yes yes i agree with you on a lot but that doesn’t diminish your ability to be an absolute hypocrite, it turns out? i remember going to see the movie ‘noah’ with a friend who had recently discovered reddit atheism and it was just really exhausting to discuss it with her. one of these Obnoxious Atheists is my Own Mother. which is a little strange, honestly, because she LOVES visiting churches for the Aesthetic and Architecture. we cannot go anywhere without having to stop by a pretty church to Admire and Explore. I’VE BEEN IN SO MANY CHURCHES FOR AN ATHEIST RAISED NON-CHRISTIAN. i’ve been to the vatican TWICE (i genuinely don’t even know how much of my extended family is christian. up north in the tiny village i come from, i believe my uncle is the churchkeeper, and it’s the only building in the area that did not get burnt down by the the nazis during ww2 - mostly because soldiers needed a place to sleep. still don’t know whether or not said uncle believes or not, because hey, it’s Personal) i think my biggest personal relationship to religion, and christianity specifically, has been academic. yeah, we learned a brief synopsis of world religions at school (and i remember the class used to be called ‘christianity, religion, and ethics’ and got changed to ‘religion, beliefs, and ethics’ which is cool. it was probably a big discourse but i was a teen who didnt care), but also my bachelor degree is in art history, specifically western art history because it’s a vast sprawling topic and they had to distill it as best they could SIGHS. western art history is deeply entangled with the history of the church, and i think the most i’ve ever learnt about christianity is through these classes (one of my professors wrote an article about how jesus can be interpreted as queer which i Deeply Appreciate). i also specifically tried to diversify my academic input by picking classes such as ‘depiction of muslims and jewish people in western medieval art’ and ‘art and religion’ when i was an exchange student in canada, along with 101 classes in anthropology and archaeology. because i think human diversity and culture is very cool and i want to absorb that knowledge as best as i can. i think my exchange semester in canada was the most religiously diverse space have ever been in, to be honest. now as an adult i have more christian friends again, but friends who chose it for themselves, and who practice in ways that sound good and healthy, like a place of solace and community for them. the vast majority of my friends are queer too, yknow?? i’ve known too many people who have seen these identities as fated opposites, but they aren’t, they’re just parts of who people are. it’s like... i genuinely love people having their faiths and beliefs so much. i love people finding that space where they belong and feel safe in. i love people having communities and heritages and connections. i deeply respect and admire opening up that space for faith within any other communities, like... if i’m going to listen to a podcast about scepticism and cults, i am not going to listen to it if it’s just an excuse to bash religion. i think the search for truth needs to be compassionate, always. you can acknowledge that crystals are cool and make people happy AND that multi level marketing schemes are deeply harmful and prey on people in vulnerable situaitons. YOU KNOW???? so now’s when i bring up Apocalypse Comic again. one of the things i really did like about it was, ironically, how it handled religion. in its setting, people have returned to old gods, and their magic drew power from their religion. characters from different regions had different beliefs and sources. in the first arc, they meet the spirit of a lutheran pastor, who ends up helping them with her powers. it was treated as, in the creators own words, ‘just another mythology’. and honestly? i love that. it was one of the nicest depictions i’ve seen of christianity in fiction, and as something that could coexist with other faiths. I Vibe With That. and then, uh, then... bunny dystopia comic. it just... it just straight up tells you christianity is literally the only way to..?? be a good person??? i guess?? i’m still kind of struggling to parse what exactly it wanted to say. the evil social media overlord bird tells you the bible makes you a DANGEROUS FREETHINKER, but the comic also treats rewriting the bible or finding your own way to faith as something,, Bad. The Bible Must Remain Unsullied. Never Criticize The Bible. also, doing good things just for social media clout is bad and selfish. you should do good things so you don’t burn in hell instead. is that the message? it reads a lot like the comic creator already had the idea for the comic, but only got the urge to make it after she was converted and needed to spread the good word. you do you i guess!! i understand that she’s new to this and probably Going Through Something, and this is just a step on her journey. but the absolute self-loathing she described in her afterword... it does not sound good. i’m just some agnostic kid so what do i know, but i do not think that kind of self-flagellating is a kind faith to have for yourself. i might not ever have been properly religious, but you know what i AM familiar with? a brain wired for ocd and intrusive thoughts. for a lot of my life i’ve struggled with my own kind of purity complex. i’ve had this really strange sensitivity for things that felt ‘tainted’. i’ve experienced having to remove more and more words from my vocabulary because they were Bad and i did not want to sully my sentences. it stacked, too - if a word turned out to be an euphemism for something, i could never feel comfortable saying it again. i still struggle a bit with these things, but i have confronted these things within myself. i’ve had to make myself comfortable with imperfection and ‘tainted’ things and accept that these are just, arbitrary categories my mind made up. maybe that’s the reason i can’t do organized religion even if i found one that fit for me - just like diets can trigger disordered eating, i think it would carve some bad brainpaths for me. so yeah i’m worried i guess! i’m worried when people think it’s so good that she finally found the correct faith even if it’s causing all this self-hate. is there really not a better way? or are they just trusting she’ll find it? and yeah it’s none of my concern, it’s like, i worry for jkr too but i do not want her within miles of my trans self thANKS. so like, i DO enjoy media that explores faith and what it means for you. my favourite band is the oh hellos, which DOES draw on faith and the songwriter’s experience with it. because of my religious iliteracy most of it has flown over my head for years and i’m like “oh hey this is gay” and then only later realize it was about god all along Probably. i like what they’ve done with the place. also, stormlight archive - i had NO idea sanderson was mormon, the way he writes his characters, many of whom actively discuss religion and their relationship to it. i love that about the books, honestly. Media That Explores Religion In A Complex And Compassionate Way... we like that i’ve been thinking about my own stories too, and how i might want to explore faith in them. most of my settings are based on magic and it’s like, what role does religion have in a world where gods are real and makes u magic. in sparrow spellcaster’s story, xe creates? summons? an old god - brings them to life out of the idea of them. it’s a story about hubris, mostly. then there’s iphimery, the story where i am actively fleshing out a pantheon. there’s no doubt the gods are real in the fantasy version of iphimery, they are the source of magic and sustain themselves on slivers of humanity in exchange. but in the modern version, where they are mostly forgotten? that’s some room for me to explore, i think. especially the character of timian, who comes from a smaller town and moves to a large and diverse city. in the fantasy story, the guardian deity chooses his sister as a vessel. in the modern setting, that does not happen, and i don’t yet know what does, but i really want timian to be someone who struggles with his identity - his faith, his sexuality, the expectations cast upon him by his hometown... i’m sure it’s a cliché story retold through a million gay characters but i want to do it too okay. i want to see him carve out his own way of existing within the world because i care him and want to see him thrive!!! alrighty i THINK that’s all i wanted to write. thanks if you read all of this, and if you didn’t that’s super cool have a nice day !

okay so obviously it’s about pirates (hence the title), but it’s not about just ANY pirates now... but THE infamous captain flint and long john silver! the show itself takes place 20 years prior to the events of the classic novel, treasure island... so the basic storyline of the entire thing (without giving too much away) is it basically revolves around captain flint’s treasure and how he came to get it (bc obviously we were all wondering why this damn treasure was so important when we read TI amiright?). those are just the basics... of course the show doesn’t only revolve around flint and silver, but along with many other characters and some historical figures as well (i.e. anne bonny, blackbeard, jack rackham, etc), but the treasure itself basically changes all their lives... whether it’s for better or worse that’s for YOU to find out! (also, I don’t like to boast, buuuuut GoT can only DREAM of being just as good as black sails was... and that is a honest to god fact!!!)

okay, so I love pretty much all the relationships on this show tbh?? like they’re all so well written and just really good?? obviously, I wish some characters got to interact with others more or at least once, but my all-time favorite ship is flinthamilton(s) bc they’re just so wholesome and soft and I just want to cry??? as for actual friendships... I absolutely adore flint and eleanor bc he is literally the father she deserved and I will die on that hill... and while I’m on this topic... the show itself could have went somewhere entirely romantic with these two (esp. during the one scene) and they didn’t... and I will always respect the creators for that tbh. bc why have some creepy relationship when you can have a father/daughter relationship with two people who aren’t even blood-related??

here’s my own words on the matter (taken from this post):

pansexualitys shiny new definition that many people cling to is that pansexual is attraction to all genders. bisexual is two or more genders.

which. frankly? doesnt make any sense. my guess is that its supposed to be inclusive of nonbinary genders and those a part of cultures who historically have not had a binary gender system in the first place. i cannot speak for the latter group, but as a nonbinary person, its not inclusive. anyone can be attracted to nonbinary people. literally anyone. theres no way to know if everyone you meet is nonbinary or not. whether or not a nonbinary person reciprocates those feelings and is interested in pursuing a relationship is completely up to the individual, regardless of the sexualities of the people involved.

bottom line is that you cant number the amounts of genders someone can be attracted to, thus rendering those definitions pointless. people can be attracted to all kinds of people regardless of gender, even if they are gay, a lesbian, or straight. all people can date thousands of nonbinary genders if all people involved are interested and comfortable with it. numbering the genders you can be attracted to diminishes the post of nonbinary, as it is not a third gender, it simply any experience not fitting within the western concept of the gender binary

i also discuss a LOT in that post that i think the pansexual LABEL is biphobic and transphobic and using it is furthering that BUT that doesn’t inherently make every pansexual person transphobic and biphobic. heres something else i think is relevant from that post:

pansexuality was started as a way to be trans inclusive at the expense of labelling bisexuality as transphobic when its not. transphobia is everywhere, and bisexuals are not exempt. instead of working on the transphobia within the community, the creators of pansexuality decided to remove themselves from it to create a better and less tainted word and community, and the fact that pansexuality is intended to replace bisexuality or leave it for the transphobes goes to show a few things. pansexuality and bisexuality are inherently linked because the pan label is in response to the bi label. due to its origins, it is inherently competing with bisexuality and it cant be “reclaimed” from its biphobic roots. pansexuality is not a whole, separate, and valid label. its a biphobic response to issues within the bisexual community.

and oooooone last thing from another ask i answered here if it matters:

basically i think iding with a transphobic label is inherently a singular transphobic action that doesnt make the person transphobic by itself, but is still a transphobic instance.

bisexual organizations and history do not reinforce the notion that bisexuality means “two or more.” this was completely made up to justify pan and bi being recognised as separate sexualities. and it just. doesnt make any sense if you arent looking for a reason to support pansexuality?? heres a short post discussing the “two or more” definition.
