I just had a crazy thought that may actually not be that crazy ... @glisten-inthedark, you'll probably be interested in this.
... What if the reason Odysseus uses Poseidon's own motif/melody for his "Maybe you could learn to forgive?" line is to literally match Poseidon's own way of speaking in order to have a better chance at reaching him?
Basically, Odysseus probably started speaking, not really expecting it to work. But then he feels the same crazy twinge of hope that we did, hearing that 3-second pause blind. And in the blink of an eye, he surmises that, oh, yes, he's getting somewhere. Something's happening. So, he goes all out, hijacks the trumpets, twists the words of Poseidon's catchphrase around (and definitely reaches his hand out toward him because there is no way he doesn't do that) ... literally meaning to show him in his own melody—aka a language he thinks Poseidon may understand better: "Look, this is what I mean. This is what you could be. Do you understand me when I say it in the way that you always speak? Doesn't this sound better?"
... Unfortunately, that triggers Poseidon (I wager because he is scared of how close to yielding he got there, and probably more so means to shut Odysseus up with his "DIE!" rather than anything else ... I have an analysis of this exchange here if you're interested!)
So, Odysseus learns that the only language Poseidon does understand is violence and ruthlessness. Six Hundred Strike occurs, where he hijacks the trumpets again and essentially repeats this offer just from a position of power and with significantly more violence. With the same meaning at its core, though (I go into more detail about that in this essay, if you're interested!)
