hello, i hope that you are good and not to bother with this ask! i was wondering about the role of the filmmaker (this artistic career in particular just because cinema is the art form i prefer) in the world we live in today. i remember reading one year ago that xavier dolan had decided to retire because “the world is on fire” and reading today that he’s working on his next movie. i know art can be a protest, a wake up call, a testimony of what happens or even a reminder of everything worthy of notice in the world. but at the end of the day is it just our ego that pushes us to make a movie? don’t we all want to make a tangible difference for the good in the world? i hope i explained myself, and this is in no way an attack, i just wanted to know your opinion since i think we share a sincere love for cinema

Hi! It's not a bother at all, I love this. I often find myself thinking about this as well. What is an artist's true motivation behind art? I think we can hear them say many words, but ultimately will never know what is at its very core. Why do we even share art with others? If it's such a solitary and intimate act and experience and we are "doing it for ourselves" why not just make it and never share it? I think social media and capitalism has made these intentions muddied and conversations complex. I think because it seems like everything is about profit that we have become a bit cynical about art and artists. Is art a monologue or a dialogue? Are we truly having a conversation?

When Xavier Dolan made that retirement statement, I understood what he was feeling, making a film does seem insignificant. Millions and millions of dollars are invested in making of a film and it often results in something that isn't very good. I think "times like these" or "world today" to signify bleakness and hopelessness of the world isn't something that really exists. Life and world have always been wrecked with turbulence and tragedy, but you, me, are getting older, more informed, more caring and the more you care the greater the fear, one that you have to fight to not give into.

He said about his new project that “It feels removed from my life and what I know but on re-reading it, I understood that it is a film about the fear of failure, the fear of being rejected, of being misunderstood, the difficulty of creating." He made his first film when he was 19 and he did so much in span of like 10 years, and was lauded as this kid genius, Cannes prizes left and right, but also criticism which is inevitable if you're in the filmmaking business. It comes with the territory and is something you have to accept, but of course it's a difficult thing to be like "yeah, fine, it's great how you just talked shit about my movie." Clearly it took a toll on him and he decided to back out.

If I remember correctly in his retirement statement/interview he was pretty vocal about his filmmaking insecurities, lack of success, is anyone going to see this? will they like it? etc etc which brings up the topic of success and ambition. Being ambitious and wanting to be successful aren't inherently bad things, but we cannot ignore how capitalism is shaping these two, re-defining them, the images of success it evokes.

His statement was also political. Is all art political? I don't know, but I know politics influence many areas of life. Through film we are exposed to so many different experiences and have the opportunity and choice to emphatize. Some of those films carry humanity's greatest tragedies and suffering. I don't think we can draw a clear line between a film and a larger societal change, like drawing a line from A to B to C and so on. It's a drop in the ocean, the wave. We are all part of history, of a specific reality, culture etc. that we can't detach ourselves from. Are there films that are revolutionary and ground-breaking? Of course, but they don't exist in a vacuum.

The question of is it just ego that pushes someone to make a movie is, I think, something that we'll never get an answer to, I doubt anyone will admit to that outloud. And even if they did someone can appear to fiercely and loudly fight you saying "it was never about me."

Why do you make the things you make? I feel like very few people go into a creative endeavour with a clear motivation. There are some noble and profound intentions, but a thread of irrationality is always present.

I think this is always an interesting topic, but ultimately one without a clear answer. It's something that we can dissect to the point of absurdity. It's a conversation that we should have, that is fun to have, but also "meaningless". From the beginning of time we can tell humans love stories and we can philosophize and analyze all we want, but, if I can be sentimental, I am just so glad we have soooo much art out there and I am so glad humans decided to invent movies and I hope we never stop making them!

I just like thinking of Euri's interactions with everyone too much. he's stubborn, but on the flip side for it, he's determined. he's naive, but hopeful; lazy but passionate. he's painfully nostalgic; and in a way, having lost his shrine and no longer going by his true name, "Matsuri", is a reflection of growing up and learning not to lose your inner child; but learning not to cling incessantly to grief & denial, either

on that topic, I think about his shrine very often 🌸. he only obtained his human form far after his shrine's ruin. it used to be frequently visited by the tribes though (or at least the nearest one), and it was a favorite of kids'. his existence as Matsuri was full of folktales. "the tale of matsuri", always something focused on learning to love or appreciate that which was around you, not to be greedy, how to cherish your whimsy or curious heart, etc. hes always been fantastic with kids. it was also probably full of plenty cautionary tales too, about how doing x will get you y, etc. he's a rascal to the fullest definition

once, a little girl visiting with her parents to pay respects wound up playing with him. he let her chase him a brief stint through some of the nearby trees, hiding in their limbs and hopping tree to tree until he heard their prayers finish. he led her right back to her parents arms, all while they laughed as she insisted of the "sunset tiger", the one that hopped through the trees and chuffed at her each time she found him. she promises too, he let her pet his fur; how soft it was, and how he nuzzled her temple and urged her on back to her family, only to disappear into the painted, pink tiger lilies engulfing the shrine.

stories like these probably constantly replay through his head. he spends his days now mostly with Quincy or Kuya, either at one of their cabins or (on the rarer occasion) Aster's mansion (though he's usually only there if Quincy has come to visit. I always imagine he'd not want to give up his duties to the forest so easily, and is more prone to visiting frequently than staying long-term outright). and when he can, he almost always accompanies Olivine to take care of or teach children. he's a natural at it; always giving the most outrageous voices to a story's characters, giving the most absurd traits to the lesson they're teaching.

"it's too boring if we just make them count these as are... but what if they're missing!? what if I lost them around the classroom, and, ah, little cubs..! help! I can't find my wood blocks! I can't remember how many I had! here, for every one we find, we'll count them together. I'll remember when we find the number! ack! how did that one get way up there!? here, here, come, come! of course, meanwhile, the idea of anybody else—Dante, Eiden,—calling him short? agh...!! he'll let it slide, but only because that smile on your face seems so genuine... b-but don't do it again...! or I'll .. bite you..!!!

anyways. on a similar note, I think he'd feel infinitely healed to be loved and appreciated for who he is now. he so constantly clings to the legacy of Matsuri, as if this celebrated leoger wasn't him. to hear the name "Euri!", to be called for food or help or even a scolding, he can't help but chase the sound of his name.

maybe... he doesn't have to be forgotten, after all. maybe a prayer, an offering, doesn't have to be something left at the foot of a shrine. maybe it doesnt have to be spoken before clapped palms.

I'm sure the sound of his name now does a lot to convince him he doesn't have to stay in that shrine. he doesn't have to be Matsuri, if that's not who he is anymore.

Listen, he knows what it means to always be guarded. It is something that he clearly excels at in his day to day life, both while at home in the Coral Sea and while at NRC as the Vice Housewarden of Octavinelle Dorm. i was thinking about c!rainduo in a spiderniki au earlier (especially re: the concept of wil trying for villainy and being unable to commit himself to it, and niki putting herself in the role of a hero and being unable to hack it) and playing with the idea that like, yes. wilbur dies, he disappears. niki can't save him - not as niki, and not as spiderwoman either. it's gutting. before that, niki has always been able to bounce back - or, failing that, crawl back up. wilbur is the first person close to niki that she loses, and it is terrible to bear.

Well, we know a lot about Vriska's fascinations with games in canon. The most obvious answer is FLARP because she's able to feed her lusus successfully with the other kids she defeats. Any game in which she can rig the outcome in her favour is preferred.

Vriska really doesn't like contemplating her own weakness. She's always had to be strong. She's definitely the type to try and Do Something in response to her problems, rather wallow in them. But at least prior to her maturation, I think she's more likely to deflect her negative emotions by lashing out or taking it out on someone else.

I can't say I'm certain? Like, on the one hand, it's obvious that Vriska is a very ambitious character with clear goals and roles she wants to fulfil for herself - she has a literal character she plays, modelled after a historical figure she looks up to. But on the other, robotic hand it's always partially out of necessity, I think? On Alternia she was preoccupied with providing food for her lusus via deadly roleplaying games, and in SBURB she certainly posited herself as a gr8 hero, but both of those were reactions to dangerous and demanding circumstances. (Some of those circumstances were the direct result of her own actions blowing up in her face, sometimes literally, but still). My point is I'm not sure what she Actually wanted for her future, but she would most certainly attempt to live up the troll ideal of ruthless space marauder.

Because that's what she has to do. That's always what she has to do.

I frowned at the memory, the sight of the sweet boy with small tears after a small miscommunication.

I waved to the girls, standing beside Malfoy as he leaned against the wall. His hands were shoved so deep in his pockets I was surprised they would ever be as cold as they were.

I rolled my eyes, taking both hands and pushing it open completely now.

"Try holding the door for Kline."

Malfoy looked around the books I had hoarded around the room, each stolen from the Library over my six year here at the castle.

"I went to check this book out but they told me they didn't have it," Malfoy said as he pulled a book about dragons from the shelf.

"That was the first one I ever took."

Malfoy looked up at me, opening the book and flipping through each page slowly.

"You are the most evil Hufflepuff I've met."

"I'm not evil, just honest," I shrugged as I pulled out the small mannequin from the back room, dragging it from the wheels at its feet.

"Do you steal from the morgue too?"

I looked over my shoulder at Malfoy, the book now set on a table as he watched me closely.

"No, Ky sews so she lets me use the mannequin whenever," I spoke as I center the mannequin to stand before Malfoy. His hand dropped back into his robe pockets, his expression dead as I set my head on the shoulder of the mannequin, giving him a bright smile with jazz hands on each side of the plastic body.

"What the hell do you expect me to do with that?"

"Flirt."

"Are you mad?"

"Nope, I'm actually very happy."

Malfoy's jaw looked like it could break with how wide he had it. His eyes were close to falling out his head, looking between my eyes and the eyes of the mannequin.

"I'm not doing that."

"Look, this is to see if you can flirt at all," I moved from behind the mannequin to sit on the desk that Malfoy stood beside.

"I can flirt!"

"Then flirt away," I gestured to the plastic, Malfoy doing nothing but staring at me with those scary grey eyes. I watched him, my eyes begging to blink as we both watched each other. His face drifted closer to my own, his eyes starting to twitch as they searched my own.

I watched his eyelids fall to his waterline, my fist flying over my head and I yelped with a wicked smile on my face.

"Flirt Mr. Malfoy," I pointed to the plastic with my bubbly smile.

"Please don't call me that," he mumbled before walking closer to the mannequin, a sigh leaving his lips while he carefully placed a hand on the mannequin shoulder.

"S-stop being cute."

Malfoy turned to me, his normal pale face covered in shades of red. He played with the rings on his hand again, I was slowly starting to pick up on his ticks.

"That's all you got?"

Malfoy cleared his throat, giving a sufficient nod while moving back to stand beside me.

"Oh Merlin, please never flirt again."

"Maybe if I was flirting with someone rather than something," Malfoy gasped as I turned on the table.

"Awh, if you wanna to flirt with me you could've just asked," I mocked in fake innocence.

Malfoy rolled his eyes, his away from the desk and walking to the other side of the class. I watched as he grabbed one of his sleeves, dragging it to cover his arm completely and tap his foot against the floor rapidly.

"Okay come here," I waved my hand, but he simply looked over his shoulder and rolled his eyes. I let out a dramatic sigh, falling back so my back laid against the table.

"When was the last time you flirted with a person?"

"None of your concern."

"Okay so never," I sat back up and watched Malfoy turn so he was leaning on a bookshelf. He had a face of disgust and I felt the urge to call into my own skin and hide for the rest of the practice.

"No not in the slightest, but I'm not going to spare your own precious feelings over the truth."

He scoffed, letting the back of his head hit the bookshelf with a bang before letting a emotionless laugh fall past his pink lips.

"I can't believe I'm doing this."

"As you said, you're always honest," the small statement made a smile reach my lips as I looked up at him through my eyelashes, his face held no emotion but I watched him look at the floorboard of the small empty class.

"Try it again."

"No-"

"I thought Slytherin were supposed to be ambitious," I crossed my arm, watching his shoulders become ridged as he looked up at me. It's like his brain broke again, like every time I spoke slightly personal he shut down.

"You're on thin ice Kennedy."

I smiled to myself, knowing I never told him my last name showed he had asked about me. He was more ambitious than he would ever give off to me.

"Good thing I can ice skate."

He didn't make a comment this time, pushing off the wall and moving to stand before the mannequin. He placed his hand back on the shoulder, but I jumped from the desk and removed it. As soon as my warm skin touched his own cold hand he jumped back, drawing his hand closer to his chest while he watching me closely.

"Don't start touching them, ease into that."

He watched me for a few seconds before turning back to the mannequin, his breath slowing back down as he looked at the horrible drawn on eyes.

"Hello."

I smiled at the simple gesture, the confidence in his voice shaky but better than the last time.

"Now smile at them."

"I don't smile."

I pouted my lips, giving my best puppy eyes I could muster as I watched his stare at me. He didn't crack but I watched his eyes scan my face, reading my body language.

"A smile will help."

"Next."

I rolled my eyes but nonetheless gave up on producing a smile from the boy before me.

"Try a compliment, tell them they look nice in red or you like their hair."

"This mannequin is bald and naked," Draco spoke as his eyes moved from my face to the mannequin, his nose twitching as he looked it up and down.

"Use your imagination, duh."

He let his eyes look at the mannequin up and down one more time before he turned around and grabbed his bag that he set on a table. I watched him slip the book of dragons into his bag before making his way to the door.

"No goodbye?"

"Nope," he opened the door, heading into the hall that was slowly starting to fill with children.  I turned back to the mannequin, the creepy features on it growing creepy as I looked longer.

"Well that was joyous," I spoke, slowly pushing the mannequin back into the room to belong it.

"Great, now I'm the one talking to the mannequin."

Where are you from? - A big city in the American northeast. I've probably mentioned which one before, it's no big secret lol.

Fandoms? - I tend to be in one fandom more actively and one fandom more passively at a time. I socialize and draw the most in the danganronpa & love live fandoms right now, but I lurk a lot in the dream smp fandom. In terms of other fandoms that I have been into in the past... dear lord. There's too many to list, honestly.

Tea, coffee, or hot chocolate? - Tea, 100%. I only really love hot chocolate when it's thicker, and that's kind of hard to obtain here. I used to despise the taste of coffee, but I've learned to tolerate it. I'm not doing any more than that, though, since I don't want a caffeine addiction. My favorite teas are mint green tea and various fruity red teas. c: I prefer iced tea to hot tea, but hot tea is lovely.

What's your occupation? - I'm a college student.

Fav food? - Czech beef goulash. I can't have it much though, so generally speaking, I really love anything that has both beef and mushrooms, and some sort of dairy product. Double cheeseburgers with mayo and mushrooms and carmellized onions my beloved.

Ambitions/hobbies? - I draw and read a fuckton of fanfiction. I've picked up cookie run recently and I've been liking it. I write fics in Google Keep and then never publish them. Trying new foods is also something I really like doing. I'm not the most ambitious person- mostly I just want to be able to afford a home with a cat or two when I get older. I do love it when people say my art inspired them so I'd like to produce more of it for those who like it :)

That's the shit. And laughing because someone got me to feels awesome.

(Long rant warning)

I think some people actually don't understand the process of writing. Like I see tons of people flip their shit when lm and jds say anything about how the story and characters were in the development of voltron and say they're terrible people for considering these as concepts in their story (like the idea to kill off Shiro, for example, was obviously scrapped both due to executives and also they were already thinking of a way to work him back into the story before the execs even stepped in; I had someone yell at me for like three separate replies in a post about how lm and jds are ~problematic~ because they wanted Shiro to be gay and there was a draft of the story in which he died and I'm just like honey... no... that's how writing works... creators change their minds and rework concepts all the time). People fail to realize how much drafting and writing and rewriting goes into producing a final product and it frustrates me as an author myself to no fucking end. Like... maybe understand how writing works before you yell about the showrunners being problematic because they considered killing off certain characters or whatever you idiots get mad about. Please shut up.

And for anyone who's about to attack me for possibly not knowing what I'm talking about, allow me to introduce you to my warrior cats character, Silverstorm:

I have had the same oc since I was an edgy depressed preteen who first got into warriors via the Graystripe and Millie manga which was the only book my school actually had. He started out as a super depressed, battle-scarred, emo she-cat whose mate was a rogue named Furyheart and I heavily projected on her. His original design had cheesy anime hair and one purple eye and one yellow eye and at one point she even had wings. A few years later (around 11th grade or so) I gained interest in warriors again and genderbent him because I felt like it and two years ago I scrapped the wings (even though it was super fun to draw cats with wings pff) and decided he was gay and this was his cat-boyfriend:

Silverstorm's reworked story at that time was that he was meant to be a medicine cat but felt that he was better at fighting and hunting so he hid his ability to communicate with starclan and relayed prophecies to his sister who had wanted to be a medicine cat. At one point in development he was a half-clan cat and his sister was in the other clan, too (now they are both in the same clan). He was constantly butting heads with an older warrior called Foxtail:

(can you also tell I don't know what a consistent art style is pffft this is the most recent ref I've drawn) who was an ambitious ass and a little too close to Tigerstar in personality so I changed the story fairly recently (like in August last year??) so that Silverstorm and Foxtail had trained together and been friends, and now Foxtail is Silverstorm's ex. Foxtail's motives for being an evil son-of-a-bitch are now "cat god is telling me to do this" instead of "I want power" because in this story starclan is now corrupt and has a leader (even though they're not supposed to) who banishes cats to the dark forest if they stand up to her. Silverstorm is no longer a supposed-to-be medicine cat and his sister is a medicine cat who can actually speak to starclan. He is visited by a dark forest cat called Flamestar who was the first leader of a rival clan and learns that his clan and that clan are actually connected by blood because the first leader of his clan was Flamestar's son. There's this whole thing where the conflict between Flamestar and his son parallels the one between Silverstorm and Foxtail but the parallels are reversed and eventually Silverstorm has to die so he can kill cat-god but like... I'm not even done? And half of what I just typed might get changed again before I get around to actually writing this?

As for an example of a very popular franchise other than voltron doing this, assassin's creed, one of the most financially successful and well-known video game series in the world, started out as a spinoff of prince of persia. An entire goddamn franchise almost didn't exist and because of a few decisions from the developers, now we have all these historical stabby simulator games. Another change that significantly impacted a video game franchise was the single decision to not have the evil ending of infamous 2 be canon. They changed it so as to not alienate players who preferred the good endings, and game that followed, infamous second son, was vastly different from what it could have been if evil!Cole had been canon instead.

The point I'm trying to make here is that a story can go through a ton of rewrites before it's finished. You can't fault an author (or any creator for that matter) for having concepts while in development that you happen find problematic. If those concepts make it to the final story, fine, be mad at them. But seriously, yall need to calm the fuck down and realize that this is the nature of storywriting. Go outside or something.
