The door to his chambers was propped open, no doubt from the food having to be carried in, but it was the sound of Bilbo’s disgruntled voice that caught Thorin off guard as he stood outside, simply listening against the door for a moment as Bilbo was talking with Bofur, he assumed.

“She’s a wretched creature! Barging into someone’s home and acting like she owns the place. She’s overly pushy and I know she doesn’t like me much, but for the sake of him…she puts on a front. I can tell. Bofur, I don’t know what I’m going to do, it’s not like Thorin can do anything about it!”

“I can’t do anything about what?” Thorin asked grimly, every ounce of his good mood gone as his gaze was more thunderous than it was full of mirth like it had been some few moments ago.

“Oh, Thorin…it–it’s nothing. It’s my problem, you needn’t worry about it,” Bilbo stammered, looking a bit pink in the cheeks as he scuffed his bare sole against the ground, eyes looking towards Bofur for what had to be a cry for help.

“I was just helping Bilbo get the platters in here for your dinner! Or is it supper? I can never keep ‘em straight. Judging by the smell, you’re in for a treat.” Bofur even clapped a hand against Thorin’s stiff arm, pulling a face at the tenseness before scurrying off.
