Somebody sent me an ask on another platform about the way jackie seems more engaged in sex/almost seems to enjoy sex with travis in a way that is noticeably different than with jeff, and you know what LET’S TALK ABOUT IT !! I feel like that’s an understudied scene tbh and jackie does react so differently than her really haunted quiet reaction and necklace grab tooth brushing post jeff in the pilot so!
The first thing it speaks to in my opinion is actually her suicidality. Jackie had decided to give up on living. She was passively suicidal but like…calling it passive under those circumstances is almost a disservice, she knew she WOULD die, she had decided to die, and she’d said she wasn’t going to die a virgin. So when she had sex with Travis she finally checked that box. There’s a sense of relief to it. And right after she says “so…that was sex.” Which is not exactly indicative of deep enjoyment.
I also think that Jackie was legitimately worn down by Jeff. I think what we see of her in the pilot is a very numb, fulfilling her “duties” response. It’s fucking heartbreaking and there’s history (and, I think, trauma) there. It wasn’t like that with Travis. I think that’s perhaps the first instance of Jackie actually CHOOSING without pressure to engage in sex. Which, even if you don’t enjoy it, even if you aren’t attracted to the person, even if you’re suicidal and doing it bc of your best friend who you’re in love with who has broken your heart, can feel very freeing when you’re not used to feeling like you have a choice.
I also think we see shauna experience pleasure (way more than jackie imo) during the sex with jeff in the pilot. Which is like, entirely about jackie and entirely about shauna. Jeff is just a conduit. Jackie took travis to Shauna’s bed. She stared at shauna over her shoulder as they walked away. She gave him a speech about love and heartbreak that was clearly about shauna right before. So something similar could for sure be happening there.
I didn’t personally read Jackie as truly having a great sexual experience in that scene, but I think she did feel relief of some sort and it’s likely bound up in a mixture of all three of those things (which are all equal parts as heartbreaking as everything else our favorite tragic saint lesbian haunting the narrative went through, excuse me while I sob)

okay i almost didn’t respond to this and just wanted to ignore it but it’s been on my dash so much it’s actually pissing me off. writing this all on the spot idgaf
-“its worst crime was not letting shauna dislike her child or regret motherhood”
“not letting” is crazy. i’m gonna elaborate more but this starting sentence is just HUH
- “that stupid retcon about her being a great mother who really loves her daughter but simply can't express it due to trauma”
-never ever did the show say she was a great mother. this is the season that she said it would be better if her daughter (a child) had fucked a cop (an adult) so that SHE could get away with murder. it’s the season she only spends time with her daughter when A) she’s using her to help cover up a murder or B) she’s giving her insane guilt (even if unwillingly) by just traumadumping all over her (again a literal child)
and if you’re talking wilderness timeline? i don’t see what’s “being a great mother” about that except the fact that she actually cared for the baby (post birth that is. can i remind you that she didn’t want it freaked out and tried to do a makeshift abortion in the middle of the woods. or do we just forget that). the baby is the last thing she has left of jackie and its also been the only source of hope for all her teammates for months. there is so much sitting on this baby (and by extension shauna’s) shoulders. when he’s born (or at least in the dream but that’s what we’re talking about anyways so!) shauna is overjoyed because (honestly it hurts to spell this out bc this is like basic but) she DIDNT DIE, for one. birth in this case is a symbol of hope. hope that, when we get back to reality, is false. and anyone would be traumatized by this let alone a teenage girl in the middle of the wilderness??????? stranded?? who ate her best friend who’s been through all this and you expect her to be stone cold and unmoving? that alone is such a reductive and bad take on shauna. anyone would be fucking destroyed by that.
-“a trauma that wasn't part of her character whatsoever during s1 and was clearly added in retroactively”
the trauma of… giving birth? the very traumatic birth that was set up in season one? or was the baby supposed to wait 19 months to get delivered in a cushy hospital post rescue. huh. also wait this trauma was already being developed in s1 with the abortion scene. hello.
-“obviously it was uncomfortable and made you feel for callie but allowing her to have that uncomfortable trait both made her a more interesting person”
it was uncomfortable!! now we have an explanation (that doesn’t excuse her actions). she still is a bad mom. she still has a lingering resentment for her daughter and her family and her life. its all still there!! it’s just sometimes characters are multifaceted. there’s explanations for actions that don’t mean excuses. shauna is allowed to have traits other than “mean selfish and obsessive” and still be a complex female character. in fact that makes her more complex. she’s a traumatized woman stuck in the mindset of a jealous traumatized teenage girl and it hurts people. she went through so much and it explains her actions but it doesn’t make how she behaved towards callie any better, and us seeing her feel even the smallest bit of remorse towards how she treated her daughter (like it or not, callie is still her daughter) doesn’t reduce her character but adds to it. she can recognize she has an issue but she can’t stop resenting everything she has now because it isn’t what she wanted. she’s stuck in 1996 forever.
-“further illustrated her dissatisfaction w the heteronormative life she'd committed herself to in a unique and complicated way... and then they just got rid of all that to say "no she actually loves the role of wife and mother she was just scared of emotional commitment to callie for unrelated external reasons"”
this is such a massive “taking things at face value” that it actually makes me want to slam my head into a wall. NEVER did the show say she loves the role of wife and mother. she spends time with them when she’s using them to get away with murder or when she’s fucking jeff to get back at that rush from 1996 that she’ll never feel again. she regrets this she’s recognizes maybe it’s hurting people but she doesn’t stop. and that’s just SO fascinating i think calling it a reduction is awful.
she’s still dissatisfied. the show never changed that. it never said she likes where she is and i don’t know where you’re getting that from.
also “unrelated external reasons” i wouldn’t call a traumatizing stillbirth unrelated to having children in the future.
-“it definitely feels like the writers were just unwilling to write a female character that was actually complicated or unlikable in a way that felt real/challenged traditional gender roles in a way that actually challenged the audience”
you say “complicated” and then get mad whenever anything actually complex is added. you should put your thesaurus away and spend the time you use looking up every synonym for “unique” and “complex” and “reductive” and instead use that time to rewatch the show for what it actually is.
challenging gender roles can go both ways a woman doesn’t need to be devoid of all emotion to be interesting or progressive that’s so counterproductive i’m going to lose it. women don’t need to be emotionless to be good feminist rep (in fact calling feeling emotions womanly or feminine feels misogynistic in of itself but i don’t think you’re ready for that conversation yet)
also melanie lynskey had her own trauma around a loss of her pregnancy which informs shauna’s character and always has. the birth was planned since the beginning because the writers made sure not to overstep melanie’s boundaries surrounding the topic. respecting an actress’ boundaries is 10x more important than whatever you think “good feminist rep” is.
yellowjackets s2 was so bad in so many ways but its worst crime was not letting shauna dislike her child or regret motherhood and instead having that stupid retcon about her being a great mother who really loves her daughter but simply can't express it due to trauma (a trauma that wasn't part of her character whatsoever during s1 and was clearly added in retroactively 😐)... like it was one of the most compelling and unique aspects of her character imo, obviously it was uncomfortable and made you feel for callie but allowing her to have that uncomfortable trait both made her a more interesting person and further illustrated her dissatisfaction w the heteronormative life she'd committed herself to in a unique and complicated way... and then they just got rid of all that to say "no she actually loves the role of wife and mother she was just scared of emotional commitment to callie for unrelated external reasons"... it's both a weirdly regressive move and a huge disservice to the character, it definitely feels like the writers were just unwilling to write a female character that was actually complicated or unlikable in a way that felt real/challenged traditional gender roles in a way that actually challenged the audience
#WOOGH HAD TO GET THAT OUT OF MY SYSTEM#GODDDDD#sorry if i was like mean or pissy but genuinely this has been driving me crazy all day#feel free to discuss#shep talks yj#yellowjackets

Chapter 3 - Earth and the Lost Soul
The Butterfly Who Lost Her Wings
Word Count: 3981 | AO3 Mirror | Previous | Next
Summary: Marco returns to Earth and sets out to right a wrong.
✧·゚: *✧·゚:* ☾ *:·゚✧*:·゚✧
A rift in space opened up in the Diaz family’s living room. Marco emerged from it a second later, dimensional scissors in hand. He was exactly where he had intended to land, in the middle of his living room. But only when the portal had disappeared did he realize that he hadn’t fully thought that decision through.
His mother, Angie, immediately noticed his arrival from her standing place in the kitchen. “Marco, you’re home!”
A cold wave of dread washed over him as he caught sight of his mother’s unknowing smile. She threw her arms around him in a hug, but he was completely lost in his thoughts, dismayed by his realization. I’m going to have to be the one to break the news to everyone in Echo Creek…
“Welcome home.”
“Hi, mom.” Marco tried to politely excuse himself to his room, but Angie wasn’t about to let him go so easily.
“Did you get everything figured out with Star?” she asked, letting up on her grasp. “I know she didn’t leave on the best terms.”
He turned around slowly, opting to stare at the wall behind her instead of making eye contact. “Actually… can we talk about it later? I’m really tired.”
Unfortunately, Angie was smarter than that. “Is everything alright?”
“I’m tired,” he repeated. “I’m really, really tired.”
“Marco?” She could only repeat her son’s name as he turned his back and ascended the stairs without responding further. “Marco!”
He shut his bedroom door behind him, trying to listen through the door. When he was certain that his mother hadn’t followed him in an effort to demand answers, he slid down the wall to a seated position on the floor and sighed heavily, his exhaustion finally starting to catch up with him.
His phone in is pocket was being bombarded by incoming messages, now that he’d returned to a place with cell service. He remained there on the floor for several moments before he was able to convince himself to look through his notifications. There were a lot of unread messages from his friends, mostly Jackie. As he was attempting to read through them, he was bombarded by several new texts from Janna.
Janna: yo diaz
are u home yet?
u better answer me
Because of course Janna somehow knew that he was back on Earth. He supposed it really wasn’t all that surprising, once he thought about it. I’m not sure if I’m in the right headspace to put up with this right now…
Marco: Yeah I am, how did you know that?
Janna: not important
ur gf has been harassing me bc u werent responding
next time maybe give some notice before u disappear?
Guilt flooded over him. She had every right to be upset with him, as far as he was concerned. Everyone did. He was the one who left without notice, and aside from a parting message to Jackie—apparently she had still tried to contact him anyways—no one else in his immediate friend group had known where he was.
Marco: I’m really sorry
I didn’t mean to be gone as long as I was
Janna: save your sorries for your gf dude
u cant just disappear for a week w/o warning and pretend nothings changed. shes got every right to be mad if she is
i kinda do too, lucky for u im not the grudge holding type
did star come back with u or is she like staying on mewni or whatever
Marco collapsed backwards onto his bed, defeated. His phone fell out of his hand, currently of little concern to him, now that he was so lost in his thoughts. There’s just no escaping this, is there? Everything had always been about Star, and everything still was about Star. Just as suddenly as she had crashed into his life, she was gone, and there wasn’t a thing he could do about it. He couldn’t stop thinking about her, about how the last thing she’d thought to do before disappearing in that explosion was to apologize.
A piece of his world had went with her, and he couldn’t help but feel that he was somehow responsible. There had to have been warning signs, right? Should he have done something differently, or done something sooner? “I hate this,” he murmured aloud, burying his face in his hands. “I hate this…”
Star probably hates this, too, he admitted inwardly. She always did everything in her power to be a positive force in people’s lives. The last thing she’d want is for everyone who cared about her to be moping around. I really hope she knew what she was getting herself into…
He finally spared another glance at his phone.
Janna: ???
Marco: Sorry
I don’t know if I want to talk about it right now, if that’s ok
Janna: yeah sure
if things are awkward between u two now thats ur business, not mine
jackie isnt mad at you fr that btw
Marco: For what?
Janna: uh
at the party?
Oh, right, Marco grimaced. Just before she left for Mewni—and subsequently vanished—Star had confessed her feelings for him in front of everyone at their end-of-the-school-year celebration. Even now, he still couldn’t help but hold some resentment towards her for how hasty that decision of hers had been, especially when she knew he was dating Jackie.
It was almost like she knew that was the last time she’d ever see him, and that her true feelings had been a weight on her chest that she could no longer bear to keep bottled up.
And yet, at the same time, his resentment felt unfair. He had no way of knowing when these feelings of hers had actually emerged, but Star never stopped trying to help him get Jackie’s attention. Even once they were finally dating, Star still went out of her way to include both of them in her lives however she could. As much heartache as it likely caused her, she must have valued their friendship over everything else, if she was able to force herself to put up with it for such a long time.
Conflicted feelings about Star aside, he still had overwhelmingly negative memories associated with that party. He preferred to forget about it where possible.
Marco: Gee, thanks for that, Janna
I’d almost forced that party out of my recent memory, but now it’s back.
Janna: sorry lol
Marco: Why would Jackie be mad at me about that? Star having feelings for me doesn’t change anything
Just wondering why you think that
Janna: i dont, im just repeating what she told me
and she told me she wasnt mad at u, sooo
i dont think shes mad at all tbh? that was a week ago anyways
go talk to her urself dude, im no therapist
Marco: Alright
Thanks, Janna
Janna: no prob
Though he did feel a bit guilty for withholding the truth of the situation from Janna, he swore to himself that he’d be honest about what really happened as soon as he felt able to. Janna was a mixed bag, and even though they were friends—at least, I think we’re friends?—he had no idea how she was going to take the information. He wanted to give himself time to come to terms with it all before trying to explain it to his and Star’s friends.
He had some things he needed to take care of, first. There was someone that he needed to apologize to, more than anything. Hopefully she was home.
His door creaked open, and he slowly made his way back down the staircase. His mother looked up from the book she was reading on the couch, her eyes lighting up with concern. “Marco?”
“I’m gonna go see Jackie,” he said quietly.
“Okay…that’s okay.” Angie stood up and crossed the room to stand in front of him cautiously. “Just… if you need to talk, I’m here for you, sweetie.” She extended her arms in an offering for a hug.
“I know.” He accepted her gesture and rested his head on her shoulder. “I just need to talk to her first.”
He headed out to the garage. It didn’t take long for him to wheel his bike out of the garage and suit up. He never really felt like taking his bike out was all that notable. Nothing would compare to when he tried to teach Star a couple months back, but she—
No, stop it, he told himself, shaking his head as if it would help unscramble his thoughts in any way. Stop thinking about her.
He was sure that the last thing Jackie needed was for him to suddenly show up on her doorstep in tears, especially when he had already done such a terrible job of communicating with her during his impromptu trip to Mewni. His only message to her about the entire situation had been incredibly brief.
Marco: I’m going to Mewni to make sure Star is okay. It sounds like something bad is about to go down there. I’ll be back soon, I promise. Love you
If he could go back in time a week, he would have done a better job of explaining himself. But it’s too late to worry about it now. I just need to focus on the present.
Once he’d shut the garage behind him, he headed off in the direction of Jackie’s house. His gaze rarely lifted from the street, and he couldn’t bring himself to make eye contact with any neighbors that he passed, out of fear of encountering someone who’d ask questions or demand answers.
It almost felt like some of the color in his life had been leeched away. The only thing that didn’t look any more faded to him was the moon, which was painted a vibrant and shadowy red, slowly climbing its way out of the magenta-colored morning sky—wait, what?
Marco rubbed his eyes fervently in an effort to snap himself out of it, but it didn’t work. No, his fears were completely correct, and he found himself staring up at the Blood Moon, hovering behind the clouds. It wouldn’t be visible for much longer before it sank behind the trees, but the fact of the matter was that it was here. It was still here, lingering in the background like a silent menace. A shudder ran up his spine as he watched it, unable to look away.
The front wheel of his bike suddenly collided forcefully with the curb, threatening to launch him over the handlebars. Miraculously, he managed to plant a foot on the ground to prevent himself from landing in a heap. He let out a trembling exhale as he stared up at it with an intense gaze.
Okay. Why it’s here isn’t important. You’re here to see Jackie, he repeated in his mind, over and over in the hopes that it would stick. She’s worried about you. You haven’t spoken to her in a week. You need to apologize.
With one last fleeting glance at the moon, he backed his bike away from the curb and continued down the road towards Jackie’s house.
✧·゚: *✧·゚:* ♦ *:·゚✧*:·゚✧
“King River has returned.”
Moon’s gaze snapped up from the book on dimensional travel she had been scouring through. Even if she had publicly said that returning Star wasn’t first on her list of priorities, that didn’t mean that she was about to drop all of her efforts. As she viewed it, her status as as queen was an entirely different person from herself. Queen Butterfly was the one who would look after the kingdom, and Moon was going to find a way to contact her daughter. But hearing the news of her husband’s return reminded her that this situation was far too great in scale to look at it in such a black and white way.
“Is he alright?” she demanded, standing up.
The guard nodded. “He appears to be, yes.”
Moon let out a breath that she hadn’t realized she’d been holding in. “Thank goodness…”
She left her notes behind and quickly followed after the guard. It was a slightly unusual scene that she walked into, as there were several large eagles perched around the foyer. But her husband was there, too, and that was all that mattered to her in that moment.
“Moon-pie!” he exclaimed, his eyes lighting up at the sight of her. Their common formalities were forgotten as both of them rushed towards each other and met with a tight hug in the center of the room. “I’m so glad that you’ve returned safely.”
“And I you,” Moon murmured, pressing a kiss to his cheek. “I didn’t know how much more of this I could take...”
He pulled back from the hug to hold her hands instead. “You know, you really had me worried, leaving so suddenly!”
“I’m so sorry,” she apologized.
“It’s not that I don’t trust you, because I do! But if you and Star had to leave so quickly, it must have been serious...”
She’d sworn to herself that she wouldn’t cry, but her composure was betraying her. “I’m so sorry,” she repeated, her voice choking up on the last syllable.
River frowned in concern. “Did something happen?”
“I-I tried— but I didn’t— Star, s-she— I couldn’t...” River brought a hand up to cup her cheek, and she met his gaze with sad, watery eyes.
“Moon-pie?”
She lurched forwards and buried her face in his shoulder, holding him close as tears began to flow freely.
The few knights that were left in the room lowered their heads and excused themselves from the room, granting them both some privacy.
✧·゚: *✧·゚:* ☾ *:·゚✧*:·゚✧
After a very brief internal pep talk, Marco was finally able to convince himself to knock on Jackie’s door. As anxious as he was to see her, he tried to focus on the floor as he waited, in the hopes of not overthinking anything.
When the door finally opened and he was face to face with her for the first time in an incredibly long week, he felt a grin take shape on his face. “Hey, Jackie—“
“Marco!” She darted forwards and caught him in a tight hug. “God, I was so worried about you, doofus!”
“Yeah, yeah, I know. I’m the worst.”
“No you’re not,“ she argued, holding him tighter. “I saw your message… but I sort of hoped you brought your phone anyways, just in case.”
“I can’t exactly get cell service on Mewni. Earth phones don’t work there,” he reminded her, chuckling halfheartedly. She laughed too, and it managed to brighten his smile a little. There was something comforting and familiar about hearing her laugh.
“I know! I know, it’s just… you left without much of a warning at all. First Star, and then you… you guys really scared all of us.”
“I’m really sorry. I should’ve talked to you first. I didn’t mean to make you worry so much.”
“It’s okay, Marco. I know you didn’t mean to.”
A beat of silence passed as he tried to think of what to say and she patiently waited. Where do I even start?
“Do you think we can go sit down and talk about everything? It’s… a long story.”
“Yeah, of course!” She nodded and beckoned him through the door. “Come on in.”
He followed her upstairs—after a brief hello to her parents—and took a seat in her desk chair. She sat down criss-crossed on the foot of her bed and looked at him expectantly.
Jackie was the first one that dared to break the temporary pause. Her voice was cautious. “I take it that something bad happened?”
Marco was surprised by her forwardness. “W-what?”
“I can tell you have bad news, Marco. Well, either that, or something exhausting happened. I can see it in your face.”
“Oh, uh... yeah, your first guess was pretty on point.”
Jackie frowned sympathetically. “I may not know much about this Mewni stuff, but hey, I’m probably easier to vent at than a brick wall, right?” She leaned forwards and put her hands in her lap. “So lay it on me.”
“...How much do you want to hear?”
“Tell me as little or as much as you want to. If it’ll help you feel better, I want to hear it.”
But there’s so much that’s happened! “Gosh, where do I start?”
“The beginning, maybe?”
Marco nodded, and, taking a deep breath to try and calm himself, he began his story.
“Well... there’s always been a bunch of monsters from Mewni that kept coming after Star. Their leader was named Ludo. He wanted her wand, but him and his lackeys are pretty incompetent, so they never managed to take it. Not until this guy named Toffee came along.”
“Toffee? That’s a weird name…”
“Yeah, I don’t really understand Mewni’s naming conventions, either,” he laughed. “Maybe it’s a normal name there. I mean, to be fair, most of Star’s family is named after celestial bodies, so it’s probably not that weird.”
“Yeah, I guess that’s fair.”
“Anyways, Toffee kind of showed up out of nowhere, and we could tell that this was a lot more serious than what we were used to with Ludo.”
“You didn’t ask anyone for help?”
“Star’s not exactly the type to ask her parents for help, so no, we just kind of dealt with it ourselves.”
Jackie pursed her lip. “That sounds like a really bad idea.”
“In hindsight, yeah, definitely. We had no idea who this guy was.” Queen Butterfly made it sound like he’s pretty infamous, he remembered, silently wishing he had asked for more information on Toffee when he had the chance. “He’s the only one who ever managed to take the wand. He kidnapped me, and then he tricked Star into—“
“Excuse me?!” She interrupted, somewhat outraged. “You got— you can’t just gloss over that!”
“But this isn’t about me!” Marco protested. “I’m perfectly fine now, so it’s no big deal.”
“If you’re that calm about literally getting kidnapped, I’m not sure how comfortable I am with you going to Mewni all the time...”
“It’s not a regular thing, I promise!”
“Okay, okay,” she sighed in defeat. “Fine. What happened there? Besides the whole hostage-taking thing.”
“He used me as blackmail to make Star destroy the wand.”
“I thought you said he wanted to take it?”
“That’s what we thought, initially,” Marco admitted. “He had Star use this really weird spell that set it off like a bomb. The whole castle blew up, Toffee included. We thought it killed him, but… well, it obviously didn’t. He came back.”
Jackie furrowed her brow, thinking for several moments. “Not to insult your storytelling or anything, but I’m really lost.”
“Yeah, I’m, uh... kind of skipping over a lot. Sorry.”
“It’s okay... I know there’s a lot to go over, probably.” She glances around her room once before an idea came to her. “Wait! What was up with the night of the school dance? In the graveyard, when that weird little bird dude showed up.”
“That’s Ludo,” Marco explained briefly. “Long story short... when Star tried to destroy the wand, it actually split it in two. Star kept the first half, and Ludo had the other one. That night in particular was when he stole the spellbook from Star.”
“What does that Toffee guy have to do with this?”
Marco tried to recall as much as he could about the days prior to Star’s disappearance, but the fact of the matter was that he hardly knew anything about Toffee’s involvement with the whole situation. There was obviously a lot more to it, far beyond his own knowledge.
“That spell Star used must have put him inside of the wand. For some reason, she used it again, and she got caught in the blast that time...” He took a pause, having a hard time thinking about those that few moments before she disappeared. “Toffee got out. Wherever the spell put him, it put her in his place. I think that might have been his plan all along.”
He was leaving out a lot of the details—he could tell from the slideshow of emotions on Jackie’s face that she knew his explanation wasn’t quite lining up—but frankly, he could hardly make sense of it, either. Even if he had visited Mewni several times now, everything about it and its magic was otherworldly. He couldn’t imagine how crazy it sounded to someone who had never even been there.
It wasn’t that unlike the Neverzone, in that way, though Mewni was certainly a lot less intense. A few things had stuck with him once he left—mostly learned skills, like how to drive a dragoncycle or wield a katana—but all the rest of his memories of that place had faded in a matter of weeks. He supposed it was time shenanigans of some sort, but it was still weird to him that he had acquired these skills when he didn’t remember practicing them at all.
Jackie had remained silent, mulling over his words. In the temporary break in conversation, Marco went on, saying, “Apparently this guy has been involved with Star’s family in the past, but I don’t really know how.”
Finally, she spoke up, offering an idea of her own. “Can’t someone use the same spell, or something? Anything at all?”
Marco shook his head. “I don’t think it’s that simple. The wand seems to be broken for good now, and I think that’s the only way to get to where she is.” He stared at the floor as he was reminded of just how dire this situation was. “She’s trapped in a dimension that no one can get to, and… I can’t tell if that’s worse.”
Jackie immediately dipped her head in understanding, and her sadness was apparent on her face. “Gosh, this really sucks.”
“That’s a heck of an understatement.”
“You were there when this happened? I can’t imagine how hard that was.”
He nodded once, averting his gaze from her when he felt his eyes begin to tear up again. “It should be so easy, but it’s not… everything that could have possibly gone wrong did go wrong.”
Despite his efforts to hide it, Jackie was quick to notice his defensiveness. “Hey... come here.”
He hesitated for several second before finding the energy to move. When he got up, she stood as well and met him halfway in a hug.
“I-if I had known that was the last conversation I was going to get to have with her,” Marco mumbled, his voice never rising above a whisper, “I, I wouldn’t have just let her leave without—“
Wordlessly, Jackie pulled him in tighter, resting her head against his shoulder. “I know,” she murmured. “I’m so sorry.” Marco could tell from her tone of voice that she was upset, even if she wasn’t really showing it in the same way he was.
In that moment, he felt awful for subjecting her to all of it. She and Star knew each other, of course—it was hard for anyone not to be charmed by Star’s infectious personality—but he wasn’t sure if him dumping all of the information on her without warning was a fair way to relay it. I hope she doesn’t feel guilty about what happened.
Nobody should have felt responsible. Not Jackie, not Janna, not Marco. It felt awful to admit it, but Star had been a victim of bad circumstance, and that was all. It wasn’t his fault. He wasn’t supposed to be a mind reader.
A shudder went up his spine. But why do I feel so guilty?
“I’m so glad you’re here, Jackie,” he said, attempting to redirect his thoughts.
“And I’m glad you’re back,” she replied. “I’m so happy that you’re safe.”
At least he didn’t have to wake up for school tomorrow. That was something he didn’t think he could manage.

A/N: Drunken author. Let me know if there are any glaring issues. American author. Never been to NZ. Let me know if there are any glaring issues. As always, cross posted to ao3. Posting early bc I’m still drunk and idgaf.
“Hey,” you greeted the three men who were already seated around the kitchen table. “Is Petyr coming?”
Viago hesitated. “This doesn’t really pertain to Petyr.”
You’d figured as much. When Viago asked to come down for a flat meeting, your second since moving in, you’d guessed it was about Deacon and his reluctance to do his chores. You were surprised, then, when your flatmates all turned to you and Viago spoke.
“So, Y/N, we don’t want you to feel as though we’re ganging up on you…”
Wait, what?
“Okay…”
Viago continued. “It’s just that you- and not all the time, of course, just sometimes-“
“Stop slamming the front door,” Vladislav interrupted.
Given that Viago, in his attempts to calm you, had very much worried you, you were grateful for Vladislav’s blunt approach.
“Your bedroom door, too,” Deacon added.
Viago offered you a sheepish smile, his fangs just poking out of his mouth. “Ja.”
You felt a bit embarrassed by your transgression. “Have I been waking you guys up?”
“Yes.”
“Sorry. I’ll try to be more conscious of how much force I’m using.”
Viago offered you a real smile this time. “Great! I’m glad we were able to come to an understanding.” With that, he drew a neat line through the impeccably written ‘flat meeting’ on his to do list and flipped his notebook shut.
“Right,” you said. “Uh, did this have to be a whole flat meeting though?”
Viago stared at you blankly.
“I mean, couldn’t one of you guys just have pulled me aside and asked me to close the door more quietly? Instead of having a whole production?” Despite Viago’s initial spiel, you did feel a bit ganged up on.
“I tried that!” Deacon interjected, clearly offended.
“You did?” You didn’t remember that.
“Last week. I told you that you had woken me up and to be more careful shutting the door!”
Oh, crap.
He had. To be fair, though, you had thought he was just being a jerk because he didn’t like you, and so you’d dismissed his concerns out of hand. You felt your face heat in embarrassment.
“Oh, right. Well, I, uh, didn’t realize you were serious,” you mumbled.
“What?” Vladislav asked. You could tell from his tone that he was asking because he hadn’t heard you, not because he was shocked or appalled at your words.
Still, it wasn’t helping how suddenly sheepish you felt. Attempting to speak more clearly you said, “I didn’t think it was actually an issue. I just thought you were just being particular because you don’t like me.”
Now it was Deacon’s turn to look sheepish.
“It’s fine!” You hastily tried to reassure them all. “It’s no big deal, really. I’ll be quieter during the day. And, Deacon, it’s fine. You’re always civil.” Almost always, anyway. “And it’s not like we all need to be best friends, right? Really, it’s fine.”
Looking around the table, you were met with blank stares.
Okay, then. You excused yourself and made your way upstairs to your bedroom, taking care to close the door softly behind you. You wished you could forget the last few minutes.
Only moments later, you heard a knock at the door.
“Y/N?” It was Viago.
You sighed internally before opening the door.
“Sorry about that downstairs. I hope it didn’t feel like an ambush.”
“No, of course not,” you lied.
“Good,” he responded before getting to his main point. “Why don’t you come out with us tonight?”
“Like out clubbing?”
He nodded. “Ja. With you and Deacon not really getting on, I figured we could all get to know each other better over a night out.”
Ah. So Viago was the kind of person who needed to be best friends with his flatmates. You didn’t really feel like going out tonight. You’d been up all day, whereas your flatmates have been awake for just a couple of hours. You also weren’t super excited to spend a whole evening with these guys. On the other hand, it had been a while since you went out, and it would be nice to get out of the house for something other than work or grocery shopping. Still, though, didn’t these guys actually, literally kill people when they went out? Maybe? But if you went out with them, it’s not as though they’d bring home a victim. Not someone that you had seen and interacted with. So by that logic, shouldn’t you go out?
Viago was looking at you expectantly.
“Um, okay, sure, why not?”
He grinned excitedly.
“When do we leave?” you asked.
“As soon as you’re ready.”
“Give me 15?”
Viago nodded and left, and you got ready in a heavily expedited version of your routine. You applied a coat of mascara and a layer of powder before brushing through your hair. Quite a bit more casual and simple than your usual going out look, but you hoped your go-to dress would make up for it. It was a classic black LBD, the perfect combination of slutty and classy, fitting your form in the most flattering way. Checking yourself in the mirror revealed someone who looked pretty well put together, all things considered. You pulled on the matching shoes and felt again to be sure the cross necklace was still in place before speeding downstairs.
The guys fell silent at your arrival. It was clear from Deacon’s glare and from the residual energy in the room that they had been talking about you. Viago probably hadn’t gotten the others’ permission to invite you along. Having already made up your mind to go, you traipsed out the front door and began towards the bus stop, trusting them to follow you.
The bus ride into town was silent and awkward. Your flatmates all boarded ahead of you, and the bus was crowded. Your choice of seat was narrowed down to either squeezing yourself between Viago and the wall, or sitting in a row of three with Deacon and Vladislav. Given your relationship with Deacon, one erotic dance invitation notwithstanding, and what had happened the last time you had any real interaction with Vladislav, you chose to make yourself fit in the narrow space beside Viago. As the bus began to move, you realized that choosing the clearly uncomfortable space sent an explicit message to the other two that you did not want to sit with them.
Upon exiting the bus, the four of you formed a small huddle to discuss the evening’s game plan.
“Let’s go to Boogie Wonderland,” you offered. They shot you down. “Red Square?” They again refused. “Where do you guys usually go, then?”
“We could start out at the Big Kumara,” Deacon suggested. “I’m supposed to meet Jackie, anyway.”
The other two agreed easily, so you nodded as well. You didn’t know who Jackie was, and you’d never been to the Big Kumara, but as you approached it, you realized you’d seen it before, though never given it much attention. It was more of a townie bar than a club. That might be best, though, given that you didn’t do much for hair or makeup.
You guessed that the guys must be regulars given the odd and friendly greeting by the bouncer, and how a casual “She’s with us,” from Vladislav was enough to get you the same greeting.
The bar was quiet compared to the street outside. Other than the four of you, the only people there were the two seated at a booth and the bartender. It was simultaneously too dim to see well and too bright compared to the nightclubs you were expecting. It smelled more like the wood paneling on the walls than the greasy pub food you expected they served. Oh well, this night wasn’t really about were you went. It was about spending time with your flatmates. Or at the very least, placating Viago.
“I’ll get the first round. What do you guys want?”
“No thank you.”
“I’m not really in the mood right now.”
“I’m alright.”
You laughed.
They moved to take a larger booth.
“Oh, seriously?” you asked. Who turned down free booze?
“Ja,” Viago answered. “You go ahead, though, and meet us over there,” he said, pointing.
Whatever. It saved you some money. Still, why go to a bar and not get anything to drink?
“What can I get you?” the bartender asked.
You ordered your drink, plus a plate of chips for the table. When he returned with your drink, you gave him your card and asked for a glass of water as well. With the other guys not drinking, you figured you should do your best not to get wildly drunk.
Your beverages and fries in hand, you returned to the booth to find not just your flatmates, but an unfamiliar woman, as well.
“Hi,” you greeted her. “I’m Y/N. Help yourself to some chips.”
“Hi. Jackie,” she introduced herself. “I’m an old friend of Deacon’s.” She reached across the table to shake your hand before taking a few chips.
“Nice to meet you. Can I get you a drink?” You took a sip of yours.
“No,” Deacon answered for her. “Jackie isn’t staying. We just have some things to discuss.”
His tone brokered no discussion on your part. You wondered exactly how they knew each other. The two excused themselves from the table, leaving you, Viago, and Vladislav alone.
“‘Do you guys come here a lot?”
“We know the owner,” Vladislav answered, “so we can get in even on busy nights.”
You wondered if he meant nights that the Big Kumara was busy, or nights when Te Aro in general was busy. Because it was busy out on the street, and you imagined in other bars, right now.
“That’s cool.”
You downed your drink quickly in the awkward silence that followed, and didn’t bother to excuse yourself before going up to the bar for a second.
“Same?” the bartender asked.
You nodded. “Do you know those guys?” You gestured back to your booth.
“They’re in here a lot, yeah.”
“Are they a bit… odd?”
“No odder than anyone else who frequents here.” The bartender gave you a knowing smile that you did not return.
You sighed, taking your drink and returning to the booth, where Vladislav sat alone. You really weren’t in the mood to be alone with Vladislav yet, but you didn’t have much of a choice.
“Where’s Viago?” You took a big swig of your drink.
He pointed to the back exit, where Viago stood with Deacon and Jackie. “He’s trying to convince Deacon to get on board with Red Square.”
“Red Square?” You perked up, figuratively and literally, sitting a bit straighter in the booth. You suddenly felt lighter. If you had t sped an evening with the guys, it would be better to spend it in a place less conducive to conversation and one more conducive to partying.
He laughed gently. It was warm and fuzzy.
God, you were a lightweight.
“I like your laugh.”
His smile pulled gently at the corner of his mustache, and you found yourself staring at the gap between his front teeth. “I think you’re a bit of a lightweight.”
“Am not,” you lied.
He didn’t fight you on it. “The Big Kumara isn’t really your vibe, clearly, so we’re going to go to a club.”
You downed the rest of your drink quickly, and chased it with your water. Vladislav exited the booth and stood beside you, offering you a hand up.
“Can you walk?”
“I’m barely buzzed!” you protested before taking his hand. Looking up to his face, you realized he was joking. Teasing you. “Oh, ha ha, very funny.”
When you reached the exit, Jackie had left and Viago and Deacon were waiting for you. “Red Square?” Viago asked.
You nodded too eagerly. Perhaps you were a little bit tipsy.
Red Square was a few blocks away, but you were in fact a lightweight, and your buzz was turning you into quite the chatterbox.
“Jackie seems nice.”
Deacon nodded. “She’s okay.”
“I like her hair.”
You caught Vladislav’s smirk from behind his hair. “You think I’m funny,” you accused him.
“Sometimes.”
“Red Square!” You picked up speed as you saw the club.
“Five dollar cover,” the bouncer said.
“I got it.” You offered partly out of an effort to be friendly, and partly out of laziness, as the only cash you had on you was a twenty dollar bill.
You forged ahead into the loud, dark atmosphere as your flatmates all paused at the door. “What are you guys waiting for? Come in!”
As if suddenly convinced, the three entered the club.
“This place is amazing!” Viago yelled over the music.
“You’ve never been here?”
He shook his head.
“You’ll love it!”
Viago, Deacon, and Vladislav spoke among themselves before heading towards the dance floor. You made your way to the bar, grabbing a barstool that was luckily open, and ordering a drink. You scanned the room for your friends. It was hard to see through the crowd, though, and you couldn’t quite find them.
“Hey, gorgeous.” You turned to see someone new in the seat beside you. He was very attractive. Dark curls and stunning brown eyes, with a blindingly white smile. “Can I buy you a drink?”
As if on cue, the bartender returned with your order. “Sorry,” you told him.
He didn’t seem very bothered. “What brings a girl like you here all by herself?”
This guys was 0 for 10 on originality, but you smiled in spite of yourself. Whether due to him or the nice buzz you had going on, you weren’t sure.
“I’m actually here with my flatmates.” You gestured vaguely at the dance floor. “Y/N.” You introduced yourself.
“James.” You politely shook his hand, but felt a bit silly doing so. “I’m going to order a pretzel. Want in?”
“Heck yeah.”
After a fair bit of small talk, one pretzel, and the rest of your drink, James leaned close and whispered in your ear. It was nice, intimate. But maybe too intimate? “How about I buy you that drink now?”
“No thanks. I should probably get back to my friends.” You liked James. He was friendly and attractive, and very clearly into you. But he was getting hot and heavy a little too fast, and that really wasn’t what you were here for. In fact, you were beginning to feel a bit guilty for spending the evening away from the guys, since that was the whole point of Viago inviting you along.
“Come on,” he whispered, hand moving up your thigh.
You grabbed his hand and thrust it away. “I should find my friends.”
His hand moved to your upper arm, gripping just too tightly. “Don’t be such a bitch.”
“Hey!” You looked from James over to the bartender, who was too busy at the other end of the bar to notice what was going on.
“Is this guy bothering you?” You felt a wave of relief wash over you at Deacon’s familiar voice above you and his cool hand on your shoulder.
“Who the hell are-“ James paled as he looked up at Deacon, before almost falling off of his stool in his attempt to get away.
You looked over your shoulder, but Deacon seemed normal to you. “What did you-“
“Are you okay?” Deacon asked as he took James seat.
“Yeah. Thank you.” You ordered another drink from the passing bartender.
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah.” You rubbed your arm absentmindedly. “I’m glad you were here, though. Where are the other guys?” you asked.
“I’m not sure.”
You scoured the club and briefly spotted Vladislav in a small booth with two women. Two, really? You couldn’t find Viago on the dance floor or in a booth.
“Viago told me what happened with you and Vladislav the other day.”
What?
“What?”
He repeated himself. “Viago told me what happened-“
“Nothing happened!” You were quick to defend yourself.
“I know, I know. I just wanted to explain why Viago said what he said.”
You didn’t love that they had been talking about you.
“It wasn’t about you at all. Once we found out our new flatmate was a woman, before me or Vlad even saw you, we made a blanket statement that no one would hit on you. Just as general precaution to avoid trouble.”
Hit on you or murder you, you guessed.
“There was a bit of a special emphasis placed on Vlad, but that still wasn’t about you. It’s just because he’s a bit of a, uh, ladies’ man, I guess. And knowing Vlad’s history, like Viago and I do, Viago just leapt to the wrong conclusion. It was about Vladislav, not you.”
You nodded, looking back to where Vladislav sat with two women. A ladies’ man. You could see that, you supposed. He wasn’t conventionally attractive, really, but he wasn’t unappealing. And there was something about him. A magnetism of some sort. You could see why women were drawn to him.
You thought about his laugh.
“I just figured Viago and Vladislav wouldn’t say anything about it to you.”
You downed almost your entire drink in one go. “Thanks.”
Deacon nodded.
“You know doing erotic dances for your friends is weird, right?”

What was I thinkin'
Oh, I knew there'd be hell to pay
But that crossed my mind a little too late
_______________________
Rose Tyler was the most beautiful girl James had ever seen. He decided that years ago. He was a year older but the same class as her in high school. Keeping at least an acquaintance with her for the first two years. Before their junior year where they really got to talk at a party. He’d been chasing her ever since. And she had fun leading him.
Her family bought the old McCrimmon ranch before she was born. Her father was a cowboy legend. Raised to ride bulls and that he did. Winning enough by riding in the PBR to be able to invest in more land at the age of twenty. They raised cattle and trained horses. Her mother was a champion of her own. Training and riding horses in world class events. Rose stayed humble though. She was carefree. No restraint in her friendliness or attitude. It was a warm welcome in James’s life.
His family wasn’t a fan of the friendship. Especially once they sold their farm.
When she told him to meet her at the front gate of her property, he stumbled over his okay. It was a given. He wasn’t one of the idiots to say no to her. Or maybe he was the idiot to say yes. There was a rumor that Pete Tyler was more than a bull rider. Something to do with another guy and Jackie. James never asked about it. It was just something that came back around whenever word got around that Rose was going on a date in high school.
But they weren’t in high school anymore. And he was glad that he wouldn’t have to hear it again. Especially since his nerves were already on fire, sitting at the edge of the Tyler property.
When she climbed over the gate, he knew he was in trouble. But didn’t really think about what it meant.
“You might wanna drive,” She said as she hopped into his passenger seat, “I think dad heard me.”
“What?”
“Wait another minute or two and you’ll see why.”
So he did. Not sure if it was because he felt the need to prove himself or to see if the rumors about her dad were true. Maybe it was both. But the sound of a shotgun made him kick the truck into drive,
“What the fuck?”
She shrugged and smiled, “It was an actual warning, y’know?”
Rose was wearing a tank top that belonged in an early 2000s horror movie. It was a size too small and showed off her midriff. He wasn’t complaining. Especially when she made an obvious move to sit in the middle seat to change the radio station. James found himself clenching his jaw. Just to make sure none of the stupid thoughts going through his mind came out. Not that there were many there at all.
During the commercials between songs, they caught up. They hadn’t really spoken like they used to since graduating. Both of them falling into work. James was a farmhand at several ranches. Rose was working with her mom and dad. Taking care of cattle and training horses.
She talked about a new horse until she realized what road they were on. He didn’t even realize. Until her entire mood shifted slightly. Into something that made his cheeks turn red.
“What have you got planned for us tonight?” She asked, batting her eyes.
“Oh, the Amber Tree is doing somethin’ tonight. I think a band is playing? I’m really not that sure.” He tried to sound cool and confident.
She smirked at him, “Who told you that?”
“What d’you mean?”
“I know how you boys work. You talk to each other to figure out the hottest spot. Who’d you talk to?”
He pretended to be offended, slapping his hand over his heart and glancing at her with a sigh, “You think I’m boring? Let me show you a bit of fun tonight then.”
She laughed, “You think I would’ve asked you out if I thought you were going to be boring?”
He pressed down further on the gas and grinned at her, “I sure hope not.”
The highway they had turned onto went through a forest until a railroad crossing. The music echoed back at them through the tunnel of trees. She seemed to know every song on the radio. Unlike him, he could only pick out a few. She didn’t seem to notice. Singing to him or out the window, grabbing his arm to get him to look at her.
He tried to keep his eyes on the road. Luckily he knew it like the back of his hand. Because she was determined to make him look and keep him looking.
Once they got past the train tracks, she hung out the side window for a bit, whooping at the moon. He laughed and whooped with her. It was all so natural. It was fun. The most fun he’s had in months. It made some type of warmth pump through his veins. And all he wanted was more of it.
And that he got.
When they crossed the county line, blue and red lights flashed behind him. Rose slid back in with a wide smile and looked at him like she was saying, “Well, prove what you got.” So he did. Changing the gear and swiftly pulled off into a field. The wind whipped through her hair, wisps of it stinging his face. She kept looking behind them, telling him how far behind the cop was. He wasn’t worried. He hoped he’d remember to tell her that he’d done this a few times. And his best story of one of those times.
He really did try to avoid the crops. Although he heard at least one stock of corn get caught underneath him. The other side of the field was a dirt road, which he tore out onto.
“Why don’t you go faster, cowboy?”
If he had to give an excuse or reason to go faster, he would’ve had to blame the testosterone spike those words caused. And usually, he’d try to keep in line. But if she was asking, then James would just have to do it.
The smile he got in response was worth it. A tongue-touched grin. James decided that he’d probably do anything for another smile like that.
It was another five minutes of loud music and speeding before they made it to the bar. It was already busy. Nine at night would do that to places like these in small towns. Especially when there was a promise of live music and fights. Although, fights weren’t on the posters.
He wiped his palms on his jeans and looked back at her, “Ready?”
“As long as you can keep up.”
They were both technically underage. Technically because the bar didn’t care nor did it really have enough staff to do so. The bar itself was full of old timers. The ones who were found there every night and knew everyone and their father. They were the first ones to ask what Rose was doing there.
“Does your father know?” He tilted up his hat.
Rose shook her head, “And I hope he doesn’t find out.”
The man chuckled and went back to who he was talking to originally. James felt a wave of anxiety go through him. Afraid of what that conversation would lead to for him.
“He’s not gonna tell him, right?” James asked while he paid for their beers.
“You better hope he doesn’t. You’re already in trouble.”
Her wink told him that she was more of the trouble than her dad. Even if he knew the more trouble he got into with her meant only more from her dad.
He didn’t let that stop them from dancing though. It was a honky-tonk band. It was hot and sweaty in the middle of the room. He knew that. But he didn’t know when he lost the button down he was wearing over his t-shirt. He didn’t care. She was so focused on him that he had no choice but to return it.
They were close. A lot closer than they’ve been when they danced at parties. Her chest against his. Her hands running up and down his back. This time, there wasn’t one of her friends to pull her away because she was busted. Or one of his to tell him he better lay off or he was in deep shit. They did what they’d been waiting to do. And she knew the perfect way to do it.
He was on fire. Because that’s what she did to him. Made him red and wild. So, he was just about to finally kiss her when someone shoved him back from her.
James knew who that someone was. They saw each other when he walked into the bar. They both realized what could happen. James figured it would. They both had a reputation that was in due time for testing.
Jimmy Stone was older. He was probably what made Pete Tyler the protective father he is. Once again, if the rumors were true, no one could really shame him for acting the way he did. There was no question in what Jimmy was capable of, that was given to James. He was fit. He had to be for what he did. But he wasn’t much compared to Jimmy.
“Will you fuck off, Stone?” Rose shouted at him.
He shushed her, “This isn’t about you. Well, it doesn’t have to involve you.”
James took a step forward, “You can stop talkin’ to her like that.”
He saw the fist coming and he let it land. To prove he was just as tough as Jimmy. That’s what he would say tomorrow when he was at work. But right now, he would be stupid to say it didn’t hurt. He could feel the bruise forming when he stood back up straight. He felt the blood from his split lip run down his chin.
“You afraid to fight, pretty boy?”
If it were a movie, he’d probably pop his neck. But instead, he flicked the baseball hat off Jimmy’s head. Dodging the next punch, James managed a land to the middle of the other guy’s gut. But he took the one to his ribcage. Jimmy laughed when James took a step back and groaned.
There was a crowd around them now. He saw someone step out in the corner of his eye. Then felt Rose’s hand on his elbow but he shook it off. He wasn’t one to lose a fight without good reason.
“You ready to regret coming out tonight, Stone?”
He was cocky. Maybe it was the fact that he hadn’t fallen yet or that Rose was on his side. Then a surge of anger rushed through him. He wasn’t sure where exactly it came from but it slipped out of his mouth with the taste of blood. And the hardest swing he thinks he’s ever thrown.
The crowd around him gasped. Jimmy fell flat on his ass. James laughed, then he spotted the tooth on the ground and grabbed Rose’s hand. Taking off out of the bar.
As he slid into the driver’s side and started the truck, she slid over the hood. His heart started beating a little faster. When she jumped in, she landed in the middle seat- almost in his lap. That’s when he stopped breathing.
She gave him a kiss. One that he had been dreaming about for a while now. It was sloppy and deep and warm. It was probably a lot shorter than what it felt. Only stopping when they heard a commotion at the front door.
She slipped away from him with a breathy “Thank you.”
They tore out of the gravel parking lot. He didn’t try to speed on the way home. Wanting to keep her this close for as long as possible. But he got a glimpse of the time and worried about what would be waiting.
She reminded him that maybe it would be worth it. Distracting him with another kiss when he stopped at the first sign of the night. And then telling him to pull off the road just for a second. Which led to a little more than he expected.
He had a little more than one bruise now. The rest were a lot sweeter than the first. And his shirt was just as high on his stomach as hers. Hair probably is just as messy too. Though, he didn’t quite pull it off as well as her. Given she laughed at him when he pulled back.
“You’re a mess.” She laughed, running her thumb over his bottom lip. Focusing on the cut he got in the fight.
“Your fault,” He mumbled, leaning into her hand, “What else am I supposed to do?”
He tried to kiss her again, but she giggled against his lips. Giving him a chaste one before patting his thigh.
“Better get me home before my father decides you’re the next hide on the wall.”
He cursed under his breath. Moving back to his seat and putting the truck in drive. Trying to ignore the feeling of Rose’s hand in his hair and her humming. Those things would probably be the last thing he needed to be thinking about when pulling into her drive.
Which he was against. But she coaxed him into doing it by playing the right cards. The ones he fell sucker to almost every time, especially for her.
Pete Tyler was sitting in the driveway. James knew he was in for it by the look he got when he put it in park. Instead of flying out of the drive like any other person, he got out with Rose. Grabbing her hand.
Which was arguably the stupidest decision he made all night. Grabbing her hand in front of her father like this wasn’t doing anything for him. Pete just glared at him harder.
Rose gave him a reassuring squeeze. He hoped that her showing fondness for him would save him some skin. The instinct deep in him doubted it would.
Pete glanced down between them, “Did y’all have a good night?”
It wasn’t a pleasantry. But James treated it as one, “Yes sir.”
The two words came out as if he should’ve given them with a salute. He held back the impulse to do so sarcastically.
“You should’ve talked to me beforehand.” He said thickly.
James suddenly felt like he should’ve at least tried to sharpen up a bit. He felt a bit bare in his untucked shirt, messy hair, and jeans tucked into boots. He held his head high still. There wasn’t any use in putting it down at this point. He would rather be caught looking scared in front of Jimmy Stone.
Rose pulled her hand from his and walked over to her dad. He didn’t fall for her scheme like James, “Rose. Get inside.”
“Why should I?” She tested him, trying to hide her grin.
“It’s nearly 3 am, you still live in my house, and you might as well and go ahead and get your trouble with your mother over with.”
Rose sighed and took a few steps behind Pete but didn’t go inside. He didn’t take his eyes off James. He had the same challenging look that Rose did earlier. James understood what it meant to inherit looks in that moment. Even if they meant different things.
“Your daughter is amazing, sir. I was lucky to get to hang out with her tonight.”
“You sure are. Where’d you get that bruise?”
James struggled for his words, “Uh, Jimmy Stone.”
“Where’d you go to run into him and get that?”
“He’s worse,” That was his attempt in defending himself, “And I’m sure you’ve got another way to find out besides me.”
Pete laughed and shook his head. James let a small smile come to his face. This was the opposite way of doing things for a first date. You meet and talk with the parents first. Not after. He didn’t really mind. Nothing really came smoothly for him. And he liked it that way.
Especially because their conversation ended with a little less of a glare.
“I’ll let y’all say goodnight. But you better watch what you do, Smith.”
He nodded and Pete walked inside. Silhouette taking a stance by the window. Rose glanced back and tried to shoo it away. But eventually walked back towards him when it didn’t move an inch.
She took his hands, “I had fun tonight.”
“I hope so.” He felt awkward suddenly. Unsure of what could happen next.
“Sorry about Jimmy. And my dad.”
James shrugged, “I wouldn’t ask for anything else. Another great story to tell.”
“You wanna make another great story?”
He couldn’t get out his “What?” before she kissed him. Right there. In front of her dad in the window. Once again he felt like he was on fire. Every nerve in his body was ringing. He was careful to kiss her back, not that he wanted to be.
He was shaking slightly when she stood on her toes to whisper, “It’s okay, he likes you.”
James stood there for a second. Watching her skip back inside. Excited for whatever would come next.

Jackie hadn’t been ‘lazer-tagging,’ - as she had called itas a child - in years. And oh boy didshe miss it. It was the first week of summer holidays and after the horror thatwas finals, she decided to organise an outing between herself and her friends.
She had beamed as she’d slipped the glowing vest over herhead, and ran in cackling out loud – despite the employee asking them not torun. Pfft, as if. She quickly hid andhad somehow avoided being hit so far, snickering as she hid behind structures –shooting her friends when they least expected it, while remaining hidden.
Currently she was tailing Marco, decidedly shooting his vestevery time it lit back up. Of course she felt a bit bad but his reaction was sohilarious - him swivelling around in every direction trying to figure out whothe heck kept shooting him and where they were hiding.
She snickered as she shot his vest again. He spun in herdirection, almost catching sight of her. A gasp. She held her breath.
“Get lost Janna!” He yelled in her direction. Hmm. Shesupposed this was a Classic Janna™ move to pull. Maybe she’d beenhanging out with her for too long.
“Hey Jax, what’cha doing?” Jackie almost yelped, spinningaround to face Star. She exhaled heavily, a hand to her chest and chuckled.
“Jesus Christ Star, you scared the shit out of me.”
Star smiled, “Hey, chill dude it’s all good. I can’t killanyone at the moment.” Star’s eyes darkened. “I dunno where she is, but I knowit’s Janna who keeps shooting me from behind.”
“How can you can tell?”
Star poked her tongue out for a second, frustrated albeit atad amused. “She said she’s going to, ‘pick on some poor sucker and shoot theabsolute shit out of them.’ Or something.” Star said, exasperated air quotesand all. “I guess the poor sucker is me.”
Jackie snickered, “I’m sorry to hear about that, but I’veactually been doing the same thing to Marco so… I suppose you’re lucky sheand I are on the same team, otherwise-“
Suddenly Star’s vest came back to life. A flit of excitementcrossed the princess’ face as she quickly readied her gun. But unfortunatelyJackie was too fast for her. With the sound of a futuristic space lazer, Star’svest went out again.
The look Star gave Jackie was completely deadpan.
Jackie held hand and gun up almost in defence, “Sorry but Ihaven’t been shot yet. I’m not about to lose my place because of a cute girl.”Jackie said, waggling her eyebrows with a grin.
Star appeared caught off-guard for a second, her cheekstinting rosy and Jackie could feel her stomach doing a backflip. “Uh…”
Star quirked an eyebrow, “I’m cute?”
“Uh. Yeah dude, of course.” Jackie awkwardly gestured behindher, edging away slowly before she made an even bigger fool of herself. “Now ifyou’ll excuse me, I have buddies to slaughter.”
“Wait,” Star said softly, a hand on her shoulder and theireyes met. Jackie was rooted - her throat going incredibly dry, her pulsethrumming with nerves. Oh man she wanted to run so bad. Who cares about the fact that Star could probablyshoot her during her brave escape. But she was so close that Jackie could feelher warm breath, hitching her own as Star’s eyes flickered down to her lips.
And then Star leaned down to kiss her, and all thoughts lefther mind, and all breath was knocked out of her. She leaned into Star, her minddizzying and losing her balance.
Star pulled away for a moment but Jackie huffed in annoyance, wrapping her arms around Star’s neck and pressing their lips together again. Ahappy thrum danced through her chest as she felt Star beam and kiss her back. Shetasted so sweet and Jackie wasmelting so grotesquely.
When Jackie finally released her, she didn’t realise she wason her toes until she stumbled into Star’s chest. Her cheeks flushed evendarker as she heard Star giggle. She cleared throat, ignoring the tingling ofher lips and the urge to kiss her again as she looked up into Star’s eyes. “What-“
The sound of a space lazer-gun, and Jackie’s vest stoppedglowing. She blinked, almost confused until she remember what was going on.Where she was. Oh crap. “Wh-
Star smiled warmly at her, placing a quick peck upon herlips, “That’s for shooting the junk out of my best friend.” Then she winked andwalked away.
Jackie gaped. Then she cursed, a small smile forming upon her lips.
