heres what i know about chiss oc for the force & destiny campaign:
her mom is a (human) anthropologist (mostly retired in that field, she mostly does art now) who had particular interest in studying rumored or barely-known cultures past the outer rim
still not entirely sure what happened on csilla but she (chiss oc, not her mom) was valued for her force sensitivity (using the new info abt only female children having force sensitivity I Guess, i'm not too beholden to actual canon but it's a collaborative campaign so i'm making an effort)
i think at some point (from any number of factors, to be honest) mom was like... hmm i think we need to go. and i'm not leaving my daughter behind
so they went back to empire controlled space, very likely without the ascendancy's blessing, where they lived on the fringes of the empire for awhile due to mom's own anti-empire tendencies
but chiss oc wanted to go to good schools and Be Civilized (enough of these backwater huts and desert towns) so they relocated and she went to increasingly expensive private schools and then some imperial bigshot university
she has a single-minded drive for her chosen career/passion and flew through the star wars equivalent of undergrad & grad school & is currently working on a phd
she is deeply curious and shares a lot of the same mentality of exploration & understanding as her mother did, but she prefers material culture to dealing with people directly and much prefers archaeology to anthropology
and she was raised well by her mother; her mom loves her and embraces her differences but really doesn't like that she's chosen to basically work for the empire. it feels like the foundation of a betrayal of all the ethics & morals that her mother tried to instill in her
but chiss oc feels this is more practical. she has better access, and as she's cemented herself as an academic loyal and sympathetic to the empire, she can (and does, increasingly) slightly Nudge imperial cultural officers away from things she knows they'll destroy
she has a high ideological priority for preserving material culture regardless of its provenance, but already walks a bit of a tightrope with being a force sensitive in the empire and thinks its better that she be the one who deals with this stuff, rather than another person who's less conscientious and more likely to cause greater damage
despite cementing her loyalty to the empire in a calculated way over the years, still has plenty of academic rivals that question her own provenance and motivations (as a reasonably uncommon near-human alien who came from galaxy knows where. despite her very public schooling records, etc. imperials gonna be imperials)
she has plenty in reverse, of course - people whose research she thinks is idiotic, hot takes she hates, people whose papers she's responded with with scathing rebuttals, etc. she takes particular ire with the Graverobbing And Adventure subset of the field. if you're not going to do excavation properly, just fucking call yourself a piece of smuggler scum and stop writing bad, ego-filled papers that she has to read.
she has internal issues with both her academic interest & loyalties vs her moral responsibility as an academic, but she also has internal issues with having left csilla very young and having little memory of either her father or that entire culture besides a few stories from her mother - she doesn't really consider herself a Real Chiss despite most heavily resembling them and having at least some hazy childhood memories, and her own work with cultures and how they shape people who belong to them makes her question herself and the nature vs nurture thing, etc.
her mom made her a snowglobe of csilla when she was still pretty young, after they left, and that's her designated "knick knack i take out and shake and stare at when i'm feeling sad". she also frequently talks to her mom via holocall, etc.
she worked part time at a salon during undergrad & grad school because it paid alright and its just really funny to imagine this entirely straight-faced, no-nonsense blue woman asking you if you want Alderaanian Snow or Korriban Red as your nail color today
she paid for her own piloting lessons while in school, also, because she refuses to trust anyone else with piloting a ship with her artifacts & research in it. she's licensed both planet- and space-side
