Today I pulled up dahlia tubers that produced just astonishing flowers this year, like these:
Tumblr media
They're perennials, but can't handle the cold in my region, so if you want them to grow the next year, you have to dig their tubers up and store them in a cool, dry, dark place for the winter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is what will produce even more flowers next year. It made me happy to know I'll see them again and it feels important to remember what roots look like vs what flowers look like, right now.
(Thank you for spreading positivity).
It's fascinating that they do fine (good even, if your yield is anything to go by) with this process. You wouldn't think plants would like getting dug up all the time, what with their propensity for putting down roots. Maybe there's something to be learned from tubers!
And I'm doing my best :) I know it can be difficult to find good things to hold onto when so much seems terrible. Someone's you gotta dig the little things out of the ground.

there are a lot of evil people in the world and a lot of darkness in the world and so itā€™s very important for me to stress that now more than ever is the time to spread kindness and compassion. combat the evil by not only not partaking in it, but actively refuting it. destroy the notion that being compassionate or generous or kind to someone is uncool or embarrassing or even scary. be the change you want to see. start a chain reaction. positivity only breeds more positivity. do an act of kindness for someone so that that person who is too afraid to do it themselves can see you, realize that theyā€™re not alone, and perhaps sheepishly follow your example. and then the next person who is too afraid but sees that person can do the same. when bad news comes out about bad people or horrible atrocities in the world itā€™s such an easy impulse to despair, and obviously itā€™s important to feel what you need to feel. grieve. be angry. be sorrowful. be empathetic. but dust off your pants and get up and be a part of a chain reaction that, no matter how small the scale, and spread compassion and love and care. all the reasons why you might notā€”ā€œitā€™s hard! itā€™s scary! people will make fun of me! itā€™s useless because thereā€™s too much evil!ā€ are all grade A arguments as to why you should. you have no idea how many people you could inspire to do the same. even if it doesnā€™t get you anyway far, you can at least say you have the nobility of trying. please choose love and please choose life. you are worth loving and you are worth inspiring others to love

etho said actually you _don't_ understand the intricacies of how tango is my boyfriend and bdubs is my ex
(and how tango and bdubs kiss too)
Scar: We went on that little adventure, you know! Etho: Yeah, yeah, we had our adventure, that's true, that's true. Scar: You disparaged your teammates. That's it, all right, no more spoilers. Etho: (laughs) Our team has -- our team has some weird dynamics this -- this season. Cleo: (overlapping) Really, Etho? Is there trouble in paradise? (pause) Who's third-wheeling with you, again? I can't remember. Etho: (laughs) Uhh. The -- Cleo: Genuinely can't remember. I know it's you and Bdubs. And...Tango? Tango. Tango. Etho: (loudly) Why -- Why is Tango the third wheel? Why -- why isn't Bdubs the third wheel? Cleo: Because it's you and Bdubs. I'm sorry. I understand how that relationship goes. Etho: (dissatisfied) Hmm.

I love that Isabeau is the one to bring up the "what do we do if you die" conversation cause its a very good insight to his character at the very start of the game. Isabeau is practical, smart, and loves everyone dearly and wants to know how to help them when shit goes sideways. He's the one to ask about Bonnie too, which is a delightful read on how he thinks because everyone else shuts that down instantly as a "That wont happen and cant happen" but we see later in the game it can happen which is such a startling thing for a game to do but justifies the foreshadowing of Bonnie can die what do we do if that happens? Isabeau, despite everything, is also the one who gets to the heart of the matter even if its not something must people are willing to talk about. All without it being part of his friendquest, thats just him naturally. Which! Says so much about him and how he is! His character when its not about his relationship with Siffrin is a very intriguing thing because it feels like a very classic hard intellectual stance that's been softened after many years of learning to better communicate healthily with others. A reflection, if you will, of Odile but in a very drastic direction. I find him fascinating and I also want to scoop his brains out and study them under a microscope to see all his little brain thoughts.

Batfam Goes to See Hamilton (Thanks to Jason Todd)
note: based on the fact that i saw hamilton on broadway today!
So, Jason somehow managed to drag the entire Batfam to see Hamiltonā€”because yes, Red Hood is a theater nerd, and apparently, none of them can say no when heā€™s excited about something. Hereā€™s how it went down:
Jason Todd: Living for it. Jason knows all the lyrics by heart and is practically singing under his breath the whole time. Heā€™s vibing hard to every song, mouthing along to My Shot like heā€™s in the show. Youā€™d think he was a one-man standing ovation from the way he keeps reacting to every scene. He also goes full nerd mode explaining all the historical inaccuracies and why they donā€™t matter because the storytelling is incredible.
Bruce Wayne: Very confused, but engaged. Heā€™s trying to get into it, but you can see the gears turning in his head, over-analyzing every political angle and historical context. He does appreciate the themes of legacy, sacrifice, and honor (classic Bruce). He mightā€™ve even shed a few tears during Itā€™s Quiet Uptown, but heā€™ll deny it forever.
Dick Grayson: Having the time of his life. Dick is the one clapping the loudest, laughing at all the jokes, and crying during the emotional songs. Heā€™s completely caught up in the performance, and by the time The Room Where It Happens comes on, heā€™s all but bouncing in his seat. He also loves the choreography and probably made a mental note to learn the dances later.
Tim Drake: Secretly loving it but pretending to be indifferent. Tim walked in like he was only going to humor Jason, but by the end of Act 1, heā€™s fully invested. He tries to keep a straight face, but you can catch him mouthing the words to Wait for It and tapping his fingers during The Room Where It Happens. Heā€™s obsessed with the way the show mixes history, strategy, and storytelling, and heā€™s definitely taking mental notes on things to google later for a deep dive into historical rabbit holes. After the show, heā€™s already re-watching bootleg clips on YouTube, but if anyone asks, heā€™ll just say, ā€œIt was fine.ā€
Damian Wayne: Not impressed. Damian doesnā€™t see the appeal. Heā€™s sitting there with his arms crossed, giving side-eye to everyone clapping or singing along. ā€œI couldā€™ve done better,ā€ he mutters after Guns and Ships, but you catch him tapping his foot during Yorktown, and he seems unusually focused during the duel scenes. Maybe itā€™s growing on himā€¦ but heā€™ll never admit it.
Stephanie Brown: Living her best life. Steph is totally into it. Sheā€™s laughing at all the jokes, especially King Georgeā€™s bits, and probably even got Bruce to crack a smile. Sheā€™s belting out Helpless and Satisfied in her seat and whispering excitedly to Cass about how they should come back for the next performance. Sheā€™s already planning a Hamilton-themed karaoke night after.
Cassandra Cain: Loving the energy. Cass isnā€™t much for words, but sheā€™s totally feeling the performance. The choreography and intensity of the actors keep her fully engaged. Sheā€™s watching every movement with laser focus, and you can see her appreciating the way the actors tell the story through body language. Sheā€™s not super vocal about it, but afterward, she signs to Jason that it was ā€œpowerful.ā€
Duke Thomas: Totally into the music. Duke is all about the beats and rhythm. Heā€™s vibing in his seat, really feeling the music and lyrics. You catch him nodding along during Wait for It and The Room Where It Happens, and heā€™s probably already added the soundtrack to his Spotify. Heā€™s impressed by the storytelling through music and keeps shooting Jason looks like, ā€œOkay, you were rightā€”this is awesome.ā€
At the end of the show, Jasonā€™s the first to stand up, clapping like his life depends on it, and despite the varied reactions, everyone else follows suit.

Which tie together to create a canon backdrop#basically I said all of that to say thisā€”#it's the whole reason I had to make this blog to get this sort of stuff off my chest (even if it's just for me sometimes)ā€”#Ten not only SAW Marthaā€”he trusted+respected+enjoyed+adored her. And it's a good thing#it doesn't cheapen his grief. I feel like people must think it does which is why I constantly see bad unnecessary takes about them#it just means that Martha was SO important to him and it's ok. they had a killer friendship outside the unrequited minutiae and it's ok#there's even a comic where 'someone' makes him believe she's Martha and he makes her change her appearance because ā€œit's still too rawā€#Just saying you don't say that sort of thing about someone whose existence you're all blasĆ© about#Martha already gets fucked by the narrative in enough ways without people totally missing her significance in the Doctor's life#you don't have to ship them to appreciate them on a deeper level#anyway. fuck. if you actually read all of these then I'm so sorry#creating this blog has taught me that there are only like two people who feel the same way about tenmartha matters and itā€™s fine šŸ˜‚#but if I didnā€™t give myself an outlet it would probably form a tumor SO there we are then

I work in a vet clinic. Actually, I work in two vet clinics (both & one other I thankfully don't have to work in because I don't want to drive to South Austin for work ever) as a CSR (receptionist). Three good things that happened to me this week:
Friday - I got to set my eyes on, kiss and pet, be snuffled by, and had the adventure of weighing a 234.1 lb brindled (mostly black) English mastiff named Charlie. He was under 3 years old, and his daddy (owner) said "He's still just a puppy," and he delighted me so much in his hugeness and sweetness.
Also Friday - I helped the vet tech hold a chihuahua being tested for Cushings. I was shown how to hold the dog to be the best help for both tech and pup, and when the blood draw was done, I held her and she snuggled into me and kissed me. Then we had to do that again so the vet tech could remove the catheter in her leg. Afterwards, more snuggling and kissing. She clearly felt she could trust me even after I held her through something traumatic to her, and she kissed the vet tech when she put her back into the kennel to wait for her mommy and daddy to pick her up at the end of the day.
Today (Saturday) - I got to set my eyes on, kiss and pet, be snuffled by, attempted to be hugged by, and kissed by a 97lb 1 year old Cane Corso - mostly black with some bits of brindle through his fur, and his name was T'Challa. He was a sweet delight as well and his very presence gave me joy and light in the darkness.
Those are very good things indeed!

I might be poking at a bear here but I kinda really dislike the "all or nothing" attitude the WoF fandom has. This character is evil the worst piece of garbage imaginable or is secretly a great character and you're just a fool for thinking otherwise. It's ridiculous at times
Like I recall the stuff with Secretkeeper a while back. Now, call me crazy, but I don't think she's some horrifically abusive and neglectful parent. She did the best that she could. Was it great? No, but she was trying to keep her daughter safe in a hostile world that she was terrified would reject or, worse, hunt her. Her leaving Moon alone for days was bad, yes, but she wanted to keep Moon free from the horrors of the volcano. She loved Moon and clearly took care of her a lot. You can't just look at a character and paint them as being a "horrible abusive POS" for something that, let's be real here, is much more forgivable and understandable than anything Coral, Scarlet, Diamond, Cobra, Jerboa, or Kestrel did

Voice actors are NOT the same as actors.
It takes a specific kind of skill-set and training to be able to warp and meld the voice. It takes a certain kind of talent and dedication to hone that talent into the ability to meld the voice and invoke emotion with one's voice alone. Actors are used to using their voice secondarily to their body language and their facial expressions. It's all mirrored back on camera. They do have nuance. But it's a different kind of nuance and a different kind of training to produce that nuance.
Voice actors might get their likeness transposed on their character's design, and maybe their mannerisms might seep into the character's animation. But when it's all said and done: their presence is in their voice. They are bringing a character to life, showing that emotion in their voice, trying to keep a specific accent, drawl, pitch, tone in that voice and keep it consistent for their recording sessions.
The voice actor is like a classically trained musician who can play first chair in a competitive, world-renown orchestra. The actor (who fills the voice actor's role) is like a moot who played violin in beginner and intermediate high school orchestra and thinks they can get into Juilliard with that 2-4 years of experience.
This doesn't mean that the HS orchestra moot can't play. They can even be really good at it. Maybe they won competitions and sat first chair. But they are not in the same league as the person who's been training their whole lives and lives and breathes to hone their craft using the instrument and all of the training they've ever acquired to perfect it. They are not meant for the same roles. They are not in the same caliber. You do not hire the HS equivalent when you want to play complex music in a competitive orchestra.
Actors are not the same as voice actors.
And furthermore, actors - especially big name actors - taking the roles of animated characters for big budget films or TV pilots makes no sense anyways when - at least in the case of TV pilots - there's not a point to hiring a big budget actors anyways. That money could be used elsewhere (like paying your animators), and the talent that is brought onto the screen for X character could then be hired on to voice said character no recasting required.
I wouldn't say voice acting as a profession is in danger exactly, but it's certainly being disrespected and overlooked for celebrity clout, and this has ALWAYS been an issue. Shoot, even Robin Williams knew that much - which is why he tried so hard not to be used as a marketing chess piece for Aladdin and got royally pissed off when it happened anyways. People shouldn't go to any movie (but especially not animated films) because "oh famous actor is in it". People should go because it's a good movie and the voice acting is good.
People who honest to god think that voice actors are replaceable because "oh well anyone can voice act" or "I like xyz celebrity so naturally it'll be good" ... Honestly I just wish you'd reassess your priorities because you're missing the point and are part of the problem.
Voice Actors ā‰  Actors.
#(i am incredibly passionate about this)#(and seeing celebrity voice actors in what should be a voice actor's role completely burns my buns it doesn't matter WHO it is)#(hemsworth as optimus? someone tell me one good reason why they couldn't get a good v/a to replace mr. cullen properly for the future)#(ben shwartz as sonic? dude literally isn't even a good voice actor OR actor anyways-)#(- A N D jason griffith AND my boy roger craig smith are still RIGHT HERE)#(jason griffith IN PARTICULAR would have pulled back SO many sonic fans that went to watch the film anyways. if not /more/.)#(and on top of that he has the same tonality and energy they tried to force this moshmo to try and emulate anyways so GET THE REAL THING)#(chris pratt as mario? i can at least defend /him/ and say that barring his failure to do a NY accent consistently he wasn't terrible)#(but mario's new voice actor could've been used instead and people would've clearly appreciated that WAY more)#(vanessa hudgens as sunny starscout in mlp g5's pilot movie? literally why. they replace her and hitch's va in the show.)#(don't even get me started on the concept of hiring celebrity singers to do musical theatre roles or not letting musical theatre singers-)#(-dub the celebrity voice actors you just HAD to hire for your film bc you're so worried about not getting enough clout to get ppl in seats#(that you're putting it all in this (1) big name hire bc turns out that you have no faith in your writing ability much less-)#(-animation as a medium.)#(and no before anyone says anything : no this is not me saying that ALL celebrity voice castings are bad.)#(there are some that aren't that bad and others that are actually pretty good.)#(i especially appreciate it when actors are damn well aware they aren't voice actors and try to LEARN from voice coaches-)#(-and/or their va predecessors if applicable.)#(that does not change the fact that the celebrity shouldn't have been hired just because the film wanted to have bragging clout-)#(-oh look at this FAMOUS PERSON we were able to hire ā€” yeah ok. sure wendy. i want to know if this film is quality or not.)#(and 9/10 times the SECOND there is money spent on a non voice actor to voice the main character especially)#(that usually means somewhere along the way animation IS going to get shafted. if not w the animators themselves then in the way of-)#(-the actual animation itself and ESPECIALLY the screenwriting because it's especially been so dogshit lately even before the strike.)#(a celebrity being hired to fill a voice actor's role is such an immediate red flag to me and it is VERY rare that i get to be proven wrong
