I think the original intent of this conversation is foreshadowing about Edelgard's ending. She can talk about merit, freedom and whatnot all she likes, but according to Hubert she doesn't actually have to deliver on any of those ideals she's preaching simply because she's human. It's also indicating that according to Ed and Bert, the Church didn't use it's power in a "correct" manner in that while it did spread it's teachings to the masses, it didn't force the people to follow them and because of that the nobility became corrupt. And in the process, Hubert also dehumanizes the Nabateans.
So in the end, Hubert says that humans can be hypocrites, considering he calls others "tools" and makes it clear they are nowhere near Edelgard's level… yeah, it's like you say. He has no concern over the agency of the weak, believing they should simply serve the strong no matter what the strong do. I mean, this is still the guy who after the war spies on the people and kills those he views as a threat to Edelgard's rule.
I think, however, the whole point of Hubert is his own double-think on the whole matter. Hubert talks about being free from duties placed upon you by your birth, yet he does what his family is supposed to do and be the Emperor's black ops. He talks about his loyalty to Edelgard, yet will disregard her orders if he doesn't agree with them as well as putting down anyone he deems as a threat despite Edelgard's spiel about people not needing to rely on others. The talk about freeing the people only for him to go around enforcing her rule to the shadows. The more you examine Hubert, the less sense his character makes as he's a walking contradiction to not only himself but the world Edelgard is trying to make.
In Confucian thought, humaneness is supposedly a quality innate to people and what people should strive to be (such as oudou) while Buddhism teaches our ability to reason and act in a humane manner is what separates people from animals. Hubert has a very twisted version of humaneness focused on one person, Edelgard whom he loves yet that love also prevents him from seeing her for who she actually is. After all, attachment is one of the three flames/poisons. He does not extend this compassion and concern to anyone else, nor does he act in a logical manner. Edelgard tells him she wants to conquer Fodlan, he suggests they work with the guys who experimented on her while ignoring the inconsistencies with her story and reality. Hubert and Ed can talk about humanity all they want, but they don't exemplify it. If anything, Ed's symbolism makes it out that she ends up robbing people of their humanity and Hubert is one such example.
Pat either missed the point or he just wanted to make Ed look good.
Checking something about Hubie and Pat...
Okay, so far it's kind of normal
Billy's replies are mostly the same.
But then
Branch 1 is Billy saying it's necessary to preach what you can't (won't?) do yourself, Hubert acquiesces, but says only humans can apply this "principle" that borders, if you push it very far, on hypocrisy.
This is the same (more or less) in Pat's localisation.
Branch 2 though?
Pat's Hubert says that it's indeed absurd to preach that "hypocrisy principle" and has a weird mention about humanity being the push that makes people take the lead if needed...
When JP!Hubert reiterates his branch 1 choice : only humans can and must, at times, preach things they cannot themselves do.
WTF Pat meant for Hubert to say here?
Hubie considers that pointy ears, with their longer lifespans, cannot be hypocrites - "preaching what you can't do" doesn't apply to them.
Why?
The last comment is pure Pat's fuckery : Pat's Hubert wants to preserve what makes us humans, ake the ability to be hypocrites? What does it mean, being human? Preaching things you can't do?
But then, even JP!Hubert is kind of shooting himself in the foot : recognising that they chose to fight based on the, per him, exclusive human "preach what you can't do yourself" principle.
So... what is even his point?
Note that those lines follow this one :
If it is between love and hate, then I would choose the latter. The goddess failed to properly govern this world. That is why it is necessary for Lady Edelgard to become the supreme leader of Fódlan.
So what can we make out of this?
"the icky pointy ears failed to govern the world bcs they preached the world to use "power wisely" when they didn't even do it themselves, and only humans are allowed to be faillible, aka preach things they cannot do"
Is Hubie basically going "Pointy Ears BaD" bcs they didn't do enough for Fodlan : they should be able to do what they preach, unlike humans who are expected to... say things but never do them?
Like, they had the occasions (lifespan) and "power" to govern the world and didn't do it? Is he blaming their omission/refusal to govern/rule Fodlan?
Because they have "power" and a long lifespan, they should have been able to enforce their rule/mindest over the people and govern Fodlan, but they didn't do it so now Supreme Leader will do it instead?
I'm a bit confused tbh but in a way, it would make sense with what Supreme Leader's motto tends to, and the traditional "merit might makes right".
To them, Nabateans have power and can (to them) use it, but they didn't govern Fodlan "correctly" so now it's up to Supreme Leader to take the lead.
Now, to an astute reader/player, the kind of "power" Nabateans have is debatable at best, laughable at worst - for all the reasons laid down for the past 5 years - and the double standard JP!Hubert uses here also illustrates the complete lack of agency he believes the "people who are governed" have : those with "power" must use it wisely, and to them, "wisely" means enforcing their will over the others, by force (CF isn't a route where you pick up friends to start a friendly bowling competition) if necessary.
The ones without "power" are non-entities and shouldn't be taken into account.
And anyways, they can do whatever they want, because this rule "power must be used wisely" doesn't apply to them.
Tl,Dr : it's the "Rhea BaD bcs didn't do enough for the world" take with the twist that "humans are free to do whatever they want" since the Nabs didn't use their "power wisely".
but then
the best answer is to remove her armed forces AND make it illegal that she ever interfere/participates/do anything for the world.
To Hubert the Nabs are faulty for not doing enough, and to Supreme Leader they shouldn't do anything anymore.
Tru Tl;Dr : Lizards BaD

Day 13 - Nightmares
Posted late because there's a spoiler to day 16.
Julia had a small smile as a set of light footsteps carefully made their way down the steps and over to the couch.
Her mother and father didn’t live in the same house anymore, but they still used it as the center point for all family holidays and celebrations. Her father even stayed in their bed during those times. She had been trying to get her third book written. There were a few bends that she was having trouble with, and she had planned on staying up further than everyone trying to work through a couple.
Llewellyn had Hubert in his arms, a barn owl stuffed animal that he left with Nana. Its ‘twin’, Danny, was at home. He was not, however, merely tired. No, it looked like he had a nightmare, one that scared him. “Hey, Llewie,” she cooed, helping him up on the couch so he could burrow into her side. The throw blanket was tugged and twisted around him, creating a little barrier between the world and him. Only when completely comfortable did she ask. “You wanna tell me?”
He shook his head, then after a minute nodded instead. “I was a defective,” he admitted. Julia quirked a smile at the word he managed to say instead of what he meant. She threaded her fingers through his hair, calmly repeating the motion. It was a worry, that after she remembered their past lives, that Llewellyn would as well at some point. She hoped that he wouldn’t. His past was filled with sadness and she wanted to give him a safe and mostly untroubled one. But, her father remembered, and her mother. John and Ruby didn’t, but they believed Bobby did. Bobby, however, didn’t end down the same hole. Reputedly.
She wasn’t sure about the others, and her father didn’t want her to go in search for them. ‘If we find each other, we do. Otherwise, don’t go searching for them. They likely don’t remember like you did.’ Easy for him to say, he had his wife back. She wanted William. “A detective? Were you a good one?”
He nodded. “I was searching for ev-i-dence,” he parsed out, “That would prove that someone was inn-o-cent. And I found it. A gun that someone had hid-ed. But then there was a bad defective, and he was making me go with him because he had a gun. He had comb-mitted the crime and he was…” Llewellyn sniffed loudly and hugged her tightly, burying his head.
Detective Strong. The previous William had told him about the almost death of the younger man when they worked on a case that Constable Jackson had tackled before his death. He admitted to being afraid that they would lose someone so quick after Jackson, and after Worseley in a way, that he split up the constables in an effort to find them quicker, and then didn’t wait for back up when he found them. When she next saw the younger detective, he appeared sturdy, but events as that always left a mark.
She always wondered about all of the ones he acquired.
“Did he get you in the dream?”
He shook his head and didn’t move. “No,” he mumbled, muffled by her stomach, “He had the gun pointed at me and someone opened the door. But I woke up and the door was closed. But the bad defective wasn’t there either.”
“And you came down to find me?” He nodded. “You are completely safe here. You know that?” There was a tiny hum from his throat. “Grandpa would shoot anyone that came in to hurt you. Grandma would wack them in the head with her iron skillet.”
“And you?”
I would stab them with a scalpel. Like she did in the past, only she didn’t have a supply of those yet. “My medical books would have to do.” A tiny giggle came out, because those books had been used to help Llewellyn sit at the table and Thomas had used them to flatten a few of John’s crumbled up letters before they were able to read them. “Now, do you want to go back to your room, or do you want a story from me?”
The tiny body pulled back and shyly asked, “Story?”
“Ooo, good choice,” she muttered, settling down further into the couch. “So, there was a man named William…”
-
Llewellyn woke up, terrified as the last part of the nightmare repeated and he shot up to see if his grandfather was anywhere around. He was alone in his bedroom, as was the norm. He shuffled off and grabbed his thickest hoodie and slippers before walking out of his room.
It made no sense, his grandfather threatening to out him if he followed through on his investigation into the innocent man he got hung. Wait, my investigation? He wasn’t a detective, wasn’t planning to become one either. He figured he had read too many of his Mom’s old drafts for her books and incorporated a few different aspect to his out of wack head.
He had recently figured out he was gay, and started telling family around him. Mom was the first, and he almost broke down crying when she didn’t do anything more than said ‘I accept you, exactly how you are’ and hugged him until he felt better. Then, Grandma and Grandpa, both incredibly happy that he felt safe and got hugs from the both of them. Grandpa was softer than normal and he was completely at ease. Why would his mind make him think that Grandpa would out him?
Also, why was him being out a bad thing? There was something weird about the nightmare. The clothing was old, there wasn’t a cell phone or a computer in sight. It was odd to even his standards. There was sort of an unwritten rule, about his gayness and how no one outside of their ‘family’ could know because there were broken laws and lost jobs and-
“Llewellyn, are you sleep walking?” someone asked, startling him out of his trance. His Mom was in the kitchen part of the apartment. It was new, appliances and conveniences, and more room than the previous place. She had saved up from the last two books to buy something better and they would be living in for years to come.
He shook his head. “No.” Walking over, he sat down at one of the bar stools. Either she had prepped for his nightmare, or she had planned on a giant mug for herself, as two mugs of steaming milk were placed on the table. Hers had the darker color associated with melted chocolate. His had a slightly sweeter smell, indicating that she had stirred honey in instead. “Thanks.”
She hummed a welcome before sitting down. “New place getting to you as well?” she inquired.
“No,” he mumbled, “Had a hypothetical nightmare, I think.”
“Oh, you think? That’s not a good thing to do.”
He groaned, “Mom.”
She smiled. “So, a hypothetical nightmare?”
He was quiet for a minute. “Grandpa threatened to out me.” That confused her. “I was a detective, again, and I found out that Grandpa had an innocent man hung for a crime. I, I wanna say I had been shot because of it?”
This, this chilled her. The current Thomas Brackenreid had a stellar reputation, only hindered by a few cases of corrupt and malicious suspects that almost ruined him and the family name. He had immense pride in being one of the least corrupted by the force, and championing LGBT+ members whenever he found out about discrimination. It’s the reason he had been second to her when Llewellyn came out.
The previous one, who became Chief Constable and led William to becoming one of the first Catholic Inspectors allowed in the Constabulary, with Watts serving as an unheard of Jewish Inspector, that man had a few blemishes in his life. Beating up suspects, turning a blind eye to small amounts of hooliganism. Even helping Llewellyn get Jack back was considered a crime then. But getting an innocent man convicted and hung? She hadn’t known about that, and that didn’t sit well with her.
But, there was the time where Watts disappeared, then came back. Neither her nor William asked questions, their own lives in peril before finally settling. What had happened? They could never get it out of the two of them.
“Shot?”
He nodded, “I, uh, I think I matched. One on each arm?” She didn’t know. By the time he came back, he was healed, and they didn’t know. “I think it’s because everyone’s been good, and my mind wanted to conjure a worst case scenario.”
“Why this one?” He shrugged, not knowing the answer. “So, Grandpa threatened to out you?”
“It would have ruined my life.”
“Why do you know that?” He gestured at the table, palms up in a symbolic form of ‘I don’t know.’ “How do you know that?”
“I’ve, seen it happen?” Glenn Scott? Jack Walker? “Saw it happen? Another detective was outed and he was fired. I don’t think he could get another job.” She remembered that, unfortunately. Wrapping an arm around his shoulders, he leaned a little in to rest. “Everything I had was tied into my place at the Station. My friends, my family. And because I wanted to pursue the right way, I would have lost all of it for his career, his life.”
She squeezed a little. “The man in your nightmare is not your grandfather. He’s a, bad example of some of the people that used to exist. You’re not going to lose anything now.” Julia might have felt him calm down a bit. “You have plenty of people willing to protect you for something you have no control over.”
“Even Grandpa?”
“Especially your grandfather.” Llewellyn had a small smile on his face and Julia pecked his forehead. “Now, let’s finish these and get to bed. The world won’t stop because we’re tired.”
-
The echoes of his own words filled Watts’s head as he woke from another nightmare. He had spotted Jack earlier, with a newborn in his arms and Clara hanging on him. George had been compassionate in steering him away after he faltered in their conversation, finding a new food cart to try so he wouldn’t have to see the other man. It was apparent, that his mind considered the matter open and decided to prod at it some more.
Sitting up, he saw a strange assortment of lights and looked over to a projector of sorts. Confused, he stood up and picked it up. The cord came out the back side, and everything went dark. His mind immediately panicked, struggling to find the thin item and figuring out how to plug it back. Once it was back on, he relaxed minutely.
The nightmare had been more of a memory, a horrid one that solidified his loneliness. Asking Doctor Ogden to hypnotize him so he wouldn’t feel anything about Jack again, wouldn’t have his heart broken because society said he was wrong. He hoped that he could have a love again, but the universe was cruel in his treatment. It might be possible that he was not meant to have a family his sister, his parents, Miss Marks, Danny and Huey nor someone to love and start one with. But it didn’t work and he was forced to realize that he would forever be by himself, a testament to how some get luck in their lives but he never will.
Watts had never been afraid of the dark, just became more morose as the dark took away a sense and made him delve into his own mind about the current events in his life. But never afraid, even when he had been hunted for his work, hunted for his life. The dark did keep him safe at times.
He was not, however, completely Llewellyn Watts. An orphan that was abandoned by his sister, that left the family forged out of experience because it became unsafe by a man that he considered a fair substitute for a father, that came back when the same man hunted him down to bring him back under his ‘protection’, that died with a fake life since he could never have the one he truly wanted.
No, he was also Llewellyn Ogden. The teenage son of Doctor Julia Ogden, who took to writing more than practicing so she could spend more time with him at home. Multiple best sellers, she had a current series based around a detective named Bison that was an inventor in the early 20th century that was clearly William Murdoch in his previous life. Llewellyn Ogden, who lost his boyfriend because his family business had been threatened until he agreed to pose at the boyfriend, and potential future husband, of Clara Cartwright after the teenage girl managed to get herself pregnant by a shoddy boyfriend and whose family wouldn’t allow an abortion. Llewellyn Ogden, who was kidnapped and buried alive as Doctor Ogden had been in the previous life, by the same person, coming out with a new fear of dark and closed spaces.
He sank down on the immensely more comfortable bed than he fell asleep on to think. It was not 1908, as he remembered his previous night to be. It was 2018. He was meant to be having his last year with the man he loved while pondering what they could do together after school. That was now no longer happening for him. Clara Cartwright once again was getting Jack Walker as her boyfriend and he was once again alone thanks to society. He remembered how Gr- Brackenreid looked as he told them what happened when he came home crying after Jack told him.
Wonderful, he was crying, no, sobbing again over everything. The previous Jack that he couldn’t have, and the current Jack that he would likely never have again. His previous life that hurt his heart more times than he ever wanted to remember and the current one where he couldn’t just avoid Jack when they still went to the same school and he had to see them acting like they were together. And then his mind which decided that today, of all days, he needed to remember his previous reincarnation, and remember his old life and all of the pain he endured and-
“Shhhh,” a voice calmly hummed, and arms wrapped around him. Instinctively, he clung hugged back at the person, burying his face into the neck of the woman that carried him in this life. “It’s okay, Llewellyn.”
How was it okay? How was any of it okay? I have two different lives in my head. His mind, his Ogden teener, tried to simply say ‘Mom’. That’s what he was used to, that’s what was normal for him, it was safe. She was his mother, she would always be his mother here, even if he didn’t go the same route that he did last time. She was proud of him. She loved him even if he kicked her during psych 302, all the meltdowns she had to endure from him, the heart attacks with him once he started dating Jack and several events after.
But Llewellyn Watts didn’t feel comfortable with that, not with all this information jumbling in his head. He wasn’t going to call Detective Murdoch’s wife ‘Mom’ even if in this world, she was. She had a child, a girl named Susannah and William’s son Harry that he had with Anna. Llewellyn Watts’ mother was dead, his father was dead. His sister hated his existence. Miss Marks, Danny and Huey. Jackson. Milo. It wasn’t the same, it was never the same. He didn’t have that anymore. He didn’t get to have that at all. They were all dead, they all died after meeting him.
“Doctor Ogden,” he muttered, “I don’t think it is.”

I forgot how many pets Technoblade has. It's so funny. He's this killer and destroyer of worlds and everyone is afraid of him. Yet he probably has the highest living pet count on the SMP. We've really only lost Edward (RIP KING o7) due to unfortunate circumstances and he replaced Edward with 3 polar bears! Lol. Moon, Hubert, Bob, Bob's Friend, Steve, Baba, Ed, Blitz. The dogs are don't count cause bred to die. Am I missing any? Maybe Ranboo has more pets but Techno is up there. .
GENUINELY technoblade is ruthless and a lone wolf and hes So Dangerous but he sees an animal that looks a lil funky n hes like oh thats mine now. Your name is bob. I love you
He has So Many Pets n they all live long lives because no one wants to fuck with this guy. We saw how it turned out with carl. Could u imagine his wrath if someone killed his one and only cow???? I mean we Saw how he hunted down george when he even Asked if he had any cows.

Those Who Can Do, Also Teach
At the end of the last post, the wonderful @isaacsapphire suggested that I work on some adult supervision for this squad, which I certainly already had a few ideas for. I see the Red Ribbons (which is a placeholder name I don’t really like, btw), as, well, basically a school club, with meetings and practices and the occasional ‘field trip’, and that the adults involved certainly try their best to keep the kids out of true danger, but we can’t always get what we want, can we?
The most important two are the Mullins brothers, Wayne (58) and Hal (55). The latter is the manager of the RRs, though not the ultimate authority (that would be Florian), and also coaches the school’s successful baseball team; a former minor-league player and coach, he got involved when one of Florian’s elites, Lou Bonifacio, posed as a player himself to track down a certain demon. Hal probably also teaches health class or driver’s ed or some other class they stick the coaches in.
When Florian decided to build a whole town to serve as his home base about 12 years before the story begins, Hal called up his school-principal brother, asked him if he’d like to move from West Virginia to Florida and do the same job for a lot more money and better weather, and that was that.
Hal has become a student of magic himself, mastering the Bonifacio family’s spirit-animal spell and using it with his 5-year-old pet German Shepherd. Wayne actively avoids learning about the details of magic; its existence unnerves him, and he’s got enough on his plate serving as the one-man dam between the RRs and the rest of the school and town.
Despite Hal’s involvement with the RRs, he refuses to allow kids to know what he does for a living, the youngest of whom probably is/are attending GHHS as a student. I imagine there’s some potential for drama there. Wayne’s children are all grown and are scattered to the four winds.
It takes a rare sort to have a full time job teaching and fight monsters on the side, of course; most of Florian’s heavies do that job full time. The ones I’ve come up with who might be interesting in a school setting are:
Leonard Pike (45) is the demanding, domineering father of Brandon from the last post, not a bad guy but definitely not a fun one. His relationship with his son is going to come to a head one way or another. He teaches chemistry, and I’m working on some sophomore-chem version of a subtle personality test he could give potential recruits without them knowing. (I’m throwing modernity a bone here and saying the RRs don’t really recruit until sophomore year.)
Beth Vanderbrock (26) is young enough to have been on the inaugural Red Ribbons squad in the early 90′s, and becomes a veteran female role model for Melanie the same way Mindy does for Tabby. She has a dreamy, new-agey quality to her which I like but I’m stuck on how to make it story-relevant. She teaches English and literature, naturally.
Hubert Arnault (32), a French teacher, is, on the surface, a mess, one of those teachers who everyone either makes fun of or hates for phoning it in as a teacher, but as it turns out, some thing or another he did for Florian a while back left him a nervous wreck, and the job might be the only thing keeping him sane at all. I wanted to make him from Quebec, but I’ve heard Quebecois culture is all but impossible for outsiders to understand, so I’m hesitant that I could pull it off.

via Politics – FiveThirtyEight
Welcome to FiveThirtyEight’s weekly politics chat. The transcript below has been lightly edited.
micah (Micah Cohen, managing editor): Hey, everyone! Our politics editor, Sarah Frostenson, is on vacation this week, so you’re stuck with me as your chat moderator. (Don’t bother complaining — I’ll edit any and all complaints out.)
For today, we’re going to debate what the best historical comparison is for most of the major Democratic presidential candidates. This was inspired by a few recent articles along the lines of “[INSERT 2020 Candidate] Is The [Insert Past Candidate] Of 2020.” (See here and here, for example).
So let’s just work our way down the polling charts, beginning with the leader:
Sound good?
geoffrey.skelley (Geoffrey Skelley, elections analyst): Yes, sounds like a lot of fun
julia_azari (Julia Azari, political science professor at Marquette University and FiveThirtyEight contributor): Yes!
Do we have any ground rules? I thought through some historical comparisons who weren’t nominees, though I’m prepared to stay with winners.
nrakich (Nathaniel Rakich, elections analyst): NO. RULES.
This is electoral Thunderdome.
micah: Yeah, they don’t have to be nominees.
julia_azari: Excellent.
micah: OK, let’s start with former Vice President Joe Biden.
Friend-of-the-site David Byler over at The Washington Post compared him with Mitt Romney. Anyone wanna make that case — or another?
geoffrey.skelley: The Romney comparison is quite apt, but for me, Walter Mondale sticks out as another good comparison. In 1984, he was a former VP running as the front-runner but had a challenging time winning the nomination against Gary Hart and Jesse Jackson. He had to go all the way to the convention to clinch it, which maybe could happen this time too …
nrakich: I’m a David Byler stan, and I thought his analysis was right on the nose. Like Romney, Biden is a strong, but not dominant, polling leader. Like there was among Republicans in 2012, there appears to be a healthy appetite among Democrats in 2020 for a nominee who isn’t the polling front-runner. (In 2012, that manifested itself in how seemingly every candidate, from Rick Perry to Herman Cain, had a “moment” or a period in which they surged in the polls. That looks like it could happen among Democrats in 2020, too — Pete Buttigieg may have already had his “moment.”)
But ultimately, in 2012, the GOP went with the “safe” choice in Romney. And I wouldn’t be surprised if Democrats in 2020 ultimately went with the “safe” choice in Biden, too.
julia_azari: I have a few for Biden: Harry Truman, Theodore Roosevelt, James Blaine.
micah: OK, so the Mondale and Romney comparisons are relatively good for Biden — they both won.
Julia, wanna tell us more about those others?
julia_azari: Yeah, I second being both a Byler fan, and I liked the Romney analysis. And Jonathan Bernstein’s bit about Mondale this morning.
None of mine are quite right, but I think they offer different ways to think about Biden. I thought of Truman and Roosevelt because of the vice presidency angle, first off. For the Truman comparison, I guess part of it was that people sort of struggled to pin down his exact commitments and beliefs. Was he Southern? Aligned with Northerners? Truly liberal on civil rights? Just being strategic?
micah: Yeah, Biden has a bit of that going on. What exactly is his pitch? Well, it’s hard to say.
julia_azari: And I see some of that lack of a clear platform in Biden’s candidacy, and he also has a similar sort of potential path to victory to Truman in the nomination process, where there are factions opposed but he still pulls it out.
OK, just one thing about Roosevelt — he and Biden had/have “wild card” reputations.
geoffrey.skelley: I’m really here for the James Blaine comparison.
nrakich: Both have the initials JB, Geoffrey. #illuminati
julia_azari: Blaine sought the Republican nomination when the party was pretty divided on process issues — civil service reform and how to treat the South post-Reconstruction, for example. And Blaine sorta tried to carve a middle course as the leader of a group that wanted to seek out the party middle ground on this stuff.
micah: At the risk of stepping on a piece Geoff is working on: Are there historical comps for Biden in terms of the polling — near-universal name recognition, really good favorable ratings, clear-but-not-overwhelming horse-race leader — who failed to win the nomination?
geoffrey.skelley: Ed Muskie comes to mind. He is interesting because he won the New Hampshire primary in 1972 — and the Iowa caucuses, though Iowa wasn’t a big deal quite yet — but still lost the nomination in part because he failed to meet the new expectations game by not doing as well as anticipated. It was also the first race after changes had been made to the nomination process, so everyone was adjusting to the new rules that broadened participation — like requiring state parties to advertise delegate selection events in advance — and the new realities of campaigning for primary and caucus votes and delegates, rather than focusing as much on backroom support.
nrakich: I think Hillary Clinton in 2008 is the bad-case comp for Biden.
julia_azari: Hillary Clinton in 2008.
micah: Jinx!
geoffrey.skelley: Yes, also a good one.
nrakich: She was a universally known name, closely tied to the previous Democratic administration, started off with polling numbers in the 30s. But she struggled to amass majority support, and the rest of the party coalesced around Barack Obama.
I’m not sure I buy that there’s an anti-Biden majority out there, for reasons discussed in last week’s chat. But that’s at least a plausible path to a Biden loss.
micah: On Clinton, it sorta seemed like a candidate better-suited to the moment came along (Obama). That does seem like a danger for Biden.
nrakich: Yep, that could certainly be the case in 2020. Although I think “better-suited to the moment” is kind of a retrospective label — i.e., we don’t know that until it happens, and then it seems obvious.
micah: Yeah. Obama was also … a once-in-a-generation political talent.
The Muskie vs. Clinton bad-case comps are interesting in terms of how it could go wrong for him.
OK, anything else on Biden?
…
Next up: Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders!
julia_azari: Al Smith (the Democratic nominee in 1928).
Smith is probably best-known for being the first Catholic nominee, and there’s a bit of a parallel since Sanders would be the first Jewish nominee (and the first nonreligious nominee, but we can debate that another time).
But the more important point, IMO, is that he represented a pretty distinct facet of the party. He was “wet” (anti-Prohibition), and there was very much disagreement on that issue. He was also connected to old-style machine politics as the party was moving in a different direction.
Sanders is obviously not a machine politician, but what I mean is that he’s very much tied to a particular wing/perspective in the party.
geoffrey.skelley: George McGovern in 1972 is an obvious choice. McGovern was seen as too liberal by many in his party, won his party’s nomination despite narrowly losing the national primary vote, and had extremely committed supporters who helped him win a bunch of delegates from caucus-convention states (which won’t be as open to Sanders, with many caucus states moving to primaries in 2020).
nrakich: I was gonna say Eugene McCarthy in 1968. He was an activisty (at the time, that meant anti-war) candidate who put a stronger-than-expected shock into the establishment (which went ahead and picked the last Democratic VP, Hubert Humphrey, at the convention anyway).
I mean, doesn’t this (from an NPR retrospective on McCarthy in 2005) sound like Sanders in 2016?
“Humphrey won the Democratic presidential nomination, leaving Eugene McCarthy to pick up a bullhorn outside the Hilton Hotel in Chicago to speak to his youthful admirers and supporters.”
But actually, on that score, I kinda think that the best comp for Bernie in 2020 is … Bernie in 2016. He’s kind of his own political animal.
micah: I’ve been surprised by how much Sanders has stuck to the script he followed in 2016.
nrakich: Right. It’s almost the same campaign.
micah: Anyway, one major theme here seems to be the (so far, at least) factional nature of Sanders’s bid.
nrakich: He’s an unprecedented figure in many ways. Openly (Democratic) socialist. Independent trying to win a party’s nomination. Has that ever happened before, Julia? At least in a major way?
julia_azari: Not in a major way.
geoffrey.skelley: Wendell Willkie, the Republican nominee in 1940, might be a weirdly apt comparison in terms of coming from outside the party establishment.
julia_azari: I mean, Eisenhower was drafted by both parties.
The idea of an independent coming in and imposing themselves on a party establishment — it’s hard to exaggerate how much parties used to be designed to prevent that. I wrote a piece about it in late 2015 that I’ll dig up.
nrakich: I don’t think it’s the same as Willkie or Eisenhower, though. Sanders is an elected independent. Those guys joined a political party when they decided to enter politics.
julia_azari: No, not the same at all. Eisenhower is also a unique figure, but that’s another chat. Micah’s going to kill me.
micah: This is what we’re here for! LOL
What’s the best-case comp for Sanders?
julia_azari: I mean, Smith won the nomination …
nrakich: So did McGovern. But neither became president.
julia_azari: President Trump?
(ducks away from everyone on Twitter)
(and all my students)
(and about half my friends)
micah: It is Trump, right?
julia_azari: I think so.
geoffrey.skelley: Trump is an excellent pick for best case. Capture party, win nomination and win the presidency.
nrakich: Yep, and take advantage of a divided establishment to do so.
geoffrey.skelley: Yeah, the Democratic establishment is not necessarily that divided right now. But if Biden fades in the polls, you could see even more of a struggle to coalesce around one candidate with such a crowded field full of big names.
julia_azari: I’ll get to this later in a much different context, but the last person who made people go, “holy shit, really that person?” and then became president was Ronald Reagan. Both because he was seen as extreme by some and unserious by some. But he won a national majority in the popular vote twice.
nrakich:
micah: Wait, so it’s Sanders as Reagan?
I
that!!!
You also have the ran and lost and ran again angle. And people took him (Reagan and Sanders) more seriously the second time.
julia_azari: And the conflict between party factions that revolves around extremes and ideology: The Smith comparison is about a very specific issue position and faction; on the other hand, moderates thought Reagan was too extreme, and moderates think Sanders is too extreme.
micah: OK, coming up next: California Sen. Kamala Harris!
geoffrey.skelley: Let me just go ahead and jump in with Marco Rubio in 2016. Seems strong on paper but never pans out.
julia_azari: I got two for Harris: James K. Polk and FDR. And, yeah, both sorta follow the same logic as Rubio.
geoffrey.skelley: Re: FDR — Harris is going to come back a lot stronger in about 12 years if she doesn’t win this time? Just thinking of his vice presidential bid in 1920.
julia_azari: Polk: No one’s favorite. Good politician. Affiliation with last big name Democrat (Andrew Jackson — Polk was in the House then; for Harris, I’m thinking about her connection with Obama). Had appeal for different factions of the party.
And like FDR, Harris has established herself as a solid liberal within the party. But also like FDR, she has a pragmatic side.
micah: How much does Harris being the first major, major black woman to emerge make historical comparisons more tricky?
nrakich: But she’s not the first major potentially boundary-breaking candidate.
In that vein, my best-case scenario for Harris is Obama in 2008. Unites a diverse coalition, is seen as symbolically turning the page on the incumbent Republican president, pretty strong orator.
My bad-case scenario for Harris is kind of a weird one: Mike Huckabee in 2008. Kind of a happy warrior, wins a bunch of Southern states but can’t quite seal the deal.
julia_azari: That’s a solid comparison too, I think.
BTW, I said on television that I thought Huckabee would be the 2008 Republican nominee.
micah: Do you have a link to that?!
julia_azari: No.
micah: lol
NEXT!!!!!
Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts.
julia_azari: So this is where I was going to make the Reagan comparison.
nrakich: I’m bullish on Warren’s chances, so my first comp for her is a pretty good one: John McCain in 2008. He trailed in the polls for much of 2007 but remained a respected and well-liked figure in the party (as Warren is), so he was well-positioned. Once voting started, people went for a name they trusted.
geoffrey.skelley: John Kerry in 2004? Not really the out-and-out leader through much of the year before, also from Massachusetts, but then wins Iowa and New Hampshire and runs away with the nomination.
nrakich: That was going to be my second choice, Geoffrey! (I am probably too bullish on Warren.)
julia_azari: OK, so someone who is sort of the carrier of a major message within the party, who reflects concentrated beliefs among party activists and core voters and is met with some skepticism by moderates in the establishment … I have another one that’s gonna get me so much hate mail: Sen. Robert Taft, who ran for the Republican nomination in 1952 as a conservative Republican against Eisenhower.
geoffrey.skelley: Oh, Bob Taft — that’s good.
julia_azari: I spent some time with his papers at the Library of Congress this spring, and I found a ton of letters/telegrams to Taft and his campaign managers that were like, “I love your ideas and commitment, but I doubt you’re electable.”
nrakich: That’s amazing, Julia.
geoffrey.skelley: Warren could be “Ms. Democrat” in the same way that Taft was “Mr. Republican.”
micah: OK, so best case for Warren is Reagan or McCain. Worst is Taft? Or maybe Sanders in 2016?
Wait — Julia, did you mean Reagan in 1976 or in 1980?
nrakich: Depends how it works out!
julia_azari: I guess either one? That’s not helpful, I realize, but I think the dynamics are similar.
In 1980, you had an unpopular incumbent from the other party, which is maybe a more clear comparison for 2020. And in 1976, the Democrats were challenging an incumbent under weird circumstances. (It was right after Watergate.)
micah: Next!!! This should be an interesting one: Beto O’Rourke.
geoffrey.skelley: I tried to find decent presidential primary performances by House or former House members, and here’s what I came up with: Mo Udall.
julia_azari: All my O’Rourke comparisons suck.
nrakich: I have always thought O’Rourke was too funny to be president.
geoffrey.skelley: Udall probably would’ve been a solid bet to go viral in the mid-1970s.
nrakich: Best Udall quote (which may not be appropriate for a chat): “I have learned the difference between a cactus and a caucus. On a cactus, the pricks are on the outside.”
julia_azari: How about JFK or George W. Bush? OK, you are minimally qualified, good at articulating certain ideas and rich. And that’s enough to unify a party even if it leaves certain factions seething and/or unsatisfied.
nrakich: Yeah, JFK is definitely the best-case comp for O’Rourke.
One that I was toying with was John Edwards in 2008. Young, attractive candidate with lots of buzz from his previous election.
micah: That’s our headline: Beto Is Either JFK Or Mo Udall.
OK, we’re picking up the pace!
South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg.
geoffrey.skelley: Well, the worst case for Buttigieg is Larry Agran, but I think we can all agree that Buttigieg is doing a lot better than the Irvine, California, mayor ever did in the 1992 Democratic primary.
julia_azari: I already wrote my Buttigieg take: “Is Pete Buttigieg the next Jimmy Carter?”
His “we can transcend politics” outsider schtick is pure Carter. I have the hate mail to prove it.
nrakich: Yeah, I think Julia’s Carter comparison nails it.
micah: Julia, that might be the most poli-sci dek ever: “He sounds a lot more disjunctive than transformative.”
geoffrey.skelley: Carter is certainly the best-case scenario for Buttigieg — President Pete.
nrakich: What about Newt Gingrich in 2012? He tried to be the intellectual in that race — remember how he kept bragging about being a historian? Plus, Gingrich had a “moment”/bump, like Buttigieg has already had.
julia_azari: Yeah that’s a good one — although Gingrich had a deep history in the party while Buttigieg is a newcomer.
But all of these comparisons break down on scrutiny, so don’t mind me.
geoffrey.skelley: Gingrich also polled as high as 35 percent during his surge in late 2011, while Buttigieg has been lucky to break 10 percent. But I can see it.
micah: There also may be a 2012 Michele Bachmann comparison to make. Maybe not her or Gingrich specifically, but the surged-and-went-nowhere path is certainly possible for Buttigieg.
geoffrey.skelley: With a strong play in Iowa that fell flat by the end.
micah: Cory Booker!
The most optimistic comparison, which our colleage Perry made in Booker’s theory of the case, is Obama. As Perry wrote,
“A charismatic, liberal-but-not-super-liberal black man is running for president. He has degrees from two of America’s most prestigious universities. He was a community organizer before serving in elected office. He was touted very early in his career as the potential first black president. He served a stint in local government before becoming one of the very few African-Americans ever elected to the U.S. Senate. And he is running on a message of optimism.”
geoffrey.skelley: That’s sort of the best-case situation for him.
nrakich: But maybe it should be someone less famous from a previous election, given that Booker is not polling super great.
julia_azari: Yeah. Like I kinda keep thinking of Hubert Humphrey’s presidential bids. Pre-1968. Or like peripheral presidential eligibility, not even really bids, I guess.
micah: Here’s a weird one: John Kasich in 2016. At least in the positive tone and that he may not really catch on.
nrakich: Maybe Mo Udall works here too. Booker is funny!
geoffrey.skelley: That feels pretty Kasich-esque.
Henry “Scoop” Jackson crossed my mind as a Democratic senator who seemed to have a lot of potential but struggled to take off in both the 1972 and 1976 presidential races. Though Jackson won the Massachusetts and New York primaries in 1976 but didn’t win the nomination.
nrakich: Can we end with a lightning round with some of the lower-tier candidates??
micah: Why doesn’t everyone give everyone else they did?
nrakich:
Tulsi Gabbard: Dennis Kucinich in 2004. Stays in the race a long time promoting a “peace” platform, wins a decent chunk (~15 percent) in late primaries.
John Delaney: Chris Dodd in 2008. Goes all in on an early-state strategy, practically moves to Iowa and gets nothing to show for it.
Mike Gravel: Mike Gravel in 2008.
geoffrey.skelley: Chris Dodd is a great comp for Delaney. Dodd moved his family to Iowa and enrolled his kids in school there.
julia_azari: Haha. I wore myself out with the historical stuff and didn’t get to the bottom of my list.
geoffrey.skelley:
John Hickenlooper or Steve Bullock could be Bruce Babbitt in 1988. Western governor who didn’t take off.
Amy Klobuchar as Paul Simon — the Illinois senator, not the singer — in 1988. Midwestern, had potential but never shot to the lead.
Jay Inslee as Bill Richardson in 2008. Lot of federal experience, western governor.
And maybe my favorite — Bill de Blasio as John Lindsay, another liberal New York mayor who ran for president. Honestly, that’d be an OK outcome for de Blasio. Lindsay actually did well in a few contests in 1972 — second place in the early Arizona caucus, for example — and I have to say that it’s hard to see de Blasio winning much of anything right now.
julia_azari: Those are good.
micah: OK, to close: Which comp are you most confident in? (Or just proud of/think is fun?)
julia_azari: The Sanders-Reagan one came out of the blue, and I kind of like it. And also Buttigieg-Carter, if I can flog my piece on my other blog again.
geoffrey.skelley: I think Mondale-Biden and Sanders-McGovern comparisons are pretty reasonable, though it’s very early. I’m a fan of Nathaniel’s Kucinich-Gabbard comp — makes a lot of sense. Iconoclastic types.
Also Dodd-Delaney. That one made me laugh the most.
nrakich: I can’t choose between my children, Micah.
micah: CHOOSE, NATHANIEL!
nrakich: I like the Buttigieg-Carter comparison, except I don’t really think he’ll end up winning the nomination. I think the most likely scenario to come true right now is Biden-Romney, to be honest. (Well done, David!)

[Vendetta contro l'umanità - Intervista a Mavado Charon](https://blog.becomix.me/vendetta-contro-lumanita-intervista-a-mavado-charon/ "https://blog.becomix.me/vendetta-contro-lumanita-intervista-a-mavado-charon/")
Attualmente Mavado Charon sta lavorando a Thurd.
Whore – AutoproduzioneLa tua arte è mai stata (senza considerare i social network) censurata o ostacolata? Per esempio da femministe radicali?
No, mai.
Non so.
No, mi dispiace!

Bruno Mars turned 33 on Monday, and to celebrate he took to Instagram to share a HILARIOUS post about hiring Ed Sheeran to sing “Happy Birthday” to him.
Bruno shared a video of Ed’s intimate birthday serenade, which starts off on a close up of a birthday cake surrounded by cupcakes sprinkled with gold flakes. The delicious looking cake arrangement is topped with birthday candles and Bruno’s name — in case there was any confusion as to whose birthday it was. But before we can start drooling over those cupcakes or make a wish for Bruno, the camera immediately pulls out to reveal Ed playing an acoustic version of Happy Birthday to Bruno. With one minor change to the chorus…
Ed deserves another grammy just for fitting “Two Time Super Bowl performing Bruno” into the Happy Birthday song. And he also deserves an Oscar for keeping a straight face through the whole thing.
As Ed finishes his birthday tune, a very pleased King Bruno, wearing a gold party hat and Versace bomber jacket, nods along while eating his cake with a knife and fork. And in full Medieval King form, he commands his jester to sing again!
Bruno hilariously captioned the post QUOTE, “You know you’ve made it when you can hire Ed Sheeran to sing you Happy Birthday. #ExtraForever! #HappyBrunoMarsDay!”
They say don’t meet your heroes, but I have a feeling that hanging with these two would be as hilarious and extra as this video.
