We Tremble Not
John Sawyer
Bedford Presbyterian Church

Ephesians 6:10-20
John 6:58-69
“We Tremble Not”
(The Whole Armor of God)
When I was in college, I had a professor named Tom Trimble.  Professor Trimble taught Philosophy and was an incredibly smart and funny man.  There are all kinds of stories that I could tell about him, but I am reminded of Professor Trimble every time we sing the hymn “A Mighty Fortress is Our God.”  This old hymn, with words written by Martin Luther nearly 500 years ago, has a line that goes, “The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him.”[1]  I can remember singing this hymn multiple times in college and looking over to Professor Trimble singing the line “. . . we tremble not for him” with a silly smile on his face and a knowing nod of his head.  To be clear, Professor Trimble’s name is spelled “T-R-I-M-ble” and the word in the hymn is “T-R-E-M-ble” but I think that Professor Trimble always found the play on words to be very fun.  “We tremble not. . .  Heh!”
I also know that Professor Trimble had a way of thinking and talking about God that gave him some confidence when it came to singing about not being afraid of the so-called “Prince of Darkness grim. . .”
I remember Professor Trimble telling us in one of his classes one day that the God he believes in is not always warm and fuzzy.  If we are looking for a God that walks with us and talks with us and, as Professor Trimble said, “tickles us under the chin,” God is not necessarily going to be that way for us all the time.  “No,” he said in language far more colorful than I can use here, “there will be times when God is going to be all about showing divine power in a kick-us-in-the-rear kind of way.”[2]
There will be times in each of our lives when we want a warm and fuzzy God and then other times when we need God to be a kickin’, all-powerful God – a God who can come to us when we are trembling in the face of all that is evil in the world and work, powerfully, to not only to shake us out of whatever is holding us captive in order to calm our fears but to conquer the evil that is at work around us and within us.
Today, we find ourselves at the end of the Letter to the Ephesians, which we have been exploring each week for over a month now.  This is a letter that is a call for truth and unity in divided times (I think we could use some of that), a letter written to people who are in need of encouragement in the face of unprecedented difficulties (we could use some of that, too), a letter that is telling people how they should live as followers of Jesus Christ; whether they live in the first century or the twenty-first century (we could use some of this, too).
Today’s reading acknowledges the reality of the struggle that all people who follow Jesus are facing – namely, what to do in the face of division, and difficulty, and just plain old-fashioned evil.
In the Bible – and throughout Christian history – we find examples of evil being personified by a mysterious figure, sometimes called “the devil.”  In the Old Testament, Job is tormented by this figure.[3]  In the New Testament, Jesus is tempted by this figure in the wilderness.[4]  And, in Christian tradition and other literature he is also tempted in the Garden of Gethsemane, and even on the cross.  This evil figure – this tormenter, tempter, adversary – doesn’t necessarily wear a red suit with a horns or have a pointy tail and a pitchfork.  Over the centuries, human beings have had the tendency to give evil some easily identifiable features, when, in truth, evil comes in many forms and is often hard to spot.
Today’s reading mentions “the devil,” but it also points to the many forms of “evil” that people may encounter.  According to the author of the Letter to the Ephesians,
Our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.  (Ephesians 6:12)
In other words, even though we can easily identify human beings who are made of flesh and blood, and even if these human beings might treat others cruelly or do things that we might call “evil,” they are really being ruled by something beyond themselves.  It is important to note that we are not immune to this, either.  When was the last time you said or did something that you knew was evil or wrong but it seemed like it was almost out of your control?  For example, why did I start, thinking I was only going to eat one chocolate chip cookie, but now I’m elbow deep in the cookie jar?  I don’t know how I got here.  It’s like it was beyond my control.
Now, you and I know that evil goes far beyond temptation and impulse control and cookies.  We see things in the world that we know are just plain evil – the oppression, and subjugation, and abuse, and killing of innocent people; the abject poverty experienced by so many that could be easily alleviated by so few; the amount of food our society throws away versus how many people go hungry all the time; the choices that people make that run contrary to reason; the destructive choices that we human beings keep making again and again.  It would appear that something beyond our control is running this evil show and we are powerless against the rulers, and the systems, and the authorities – be they heavenly or earthly.
But I don’t want us to think that we are any less responsible for much of the evil in the world, as hard as it might be for us to hear.  You might have heard the expression, “The devil made me do it,” but no, in the end, you’re the one who did it.
I’m not going to lie.  Encountering and combating evil in the world and within ourselves is such a challenge.  It’s a lot – a lot to deal with, a lot to try to handle, a lot to hide from our children for as long as we can.
Recently, we’ve been reading a children’s book that talks about someone curing someone else – healing them, making them well – but the way our son was saying it one night, it sounded like he said “killing” instead of “curing.”  “Killing people is good,” I thought I heard him say,  when what he really said was “Curing people is good.”  Of course, I stepped right in it and said, “No, no, no. . . killing people is bad.”  And then, suddenly, I had to try to explain why someone would kill someone else to my four year old son, when all he wanted to know about was “curing.”  He’s recently become very interested in what “bad guys do.  Thanks, Dad.
So, whether you are afraid of the bad guys that live on the other side of the world, or the people who do bad things in your own community, or workplace, or family, or you are afraid of yourself and the choices you’ve made, in the face of all this darkness and evil, it’s enough to make us not want to get out of bed in the morning and just lie there, trembling with fear.  If only there was a cure.
The author of Ephesians writes that there is, indeed, a cure – for you and I and each and every trembling person out there, and the cure is this:  to rely on the strength that comes from God.  This cure comes in two parts – two doses, if you will.  The first dose always gets the job done, once and for all – in our hearts and in the life of the world.  But the second dose is the booster that we and the world so desperately need every day.  The first dose is the love of God as seen in Jesus Christ.  The second dose is our response to God’s great love.
In Jesus Christ, we see the power of love overcoming and completely vanquishing evil.  The God we believe in and the Savior we follow have shown us power that was made perfect in weakness.[5]  This power will, as Professor Trimble once said, kick you in the rear, because it is so disarming and counter cultural and mind-blowing beyond description.  The power of death is thrown down and new life rises in its place.  The power of darkness is thrown down because it cannot overcome the light of God.  The Prince of Darkness grim?  We tremble not for him, because Jesus Christ – in his life, and death, and rising again – shows us God’s powerful love.  The first dose has done and is doing the job, once and for all.
And yet – and yet – for some reason, there is still evil in the world.  This is where the booster shot comes into play.  This is where our response – our responsibility – comes into play.  For you and I and all who would follow Jesus Christ are the body of Christ.  And when it comes to throwing down evil and death and darkness, we are called to do our part and be strong and stand firm against it.  This is not strength for strength’s sake, though.  And it’s not about appearing or acting tough.
Christians throughout the centuries have foolishly armed themselves with any number of weapons – from swords to spears to guns – to supposedly defend themselves and their faith, as if having their bodies physically armed in such a way makes them truly safe.  The author of Ephesians writes that we don’t need any of that stuff.  “Take up the whole armor of God,” we read earlier, “so that you may be able to withstand whatever evil may come your way, and having done everything, to stand firm.” (6:13)  But, the whole armor isn’t made of metal or Kevlar.  Instead it is made of truth, and decency, and the willingness to speak the gospel of peace.  It is made of and faith, and salvation, and the Holy Spirit, and prayer.[6]  As Jesus says, “It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless.” (John 6:63)
Now, before you say “This teaching is difficult; who can accept it?” (John 6:60) like the disciples to Jesus in today’s first reading, let me assure you that yes, it is difficult – to face the world and all that the world throws at us with little more than the truth, and righteousness, and good news, and faith, and the rest.  But this is all we need, because it comes from God and has been given to us.
Now, I don’t know how confident this makes you feel.  In today’s first reading, the disciples are not confident in the slightest.  There are many who turn away, but Jesus turns to those who remain and asks, “Do you also wish to go away?”  Simon Peter answers, “Lord, to whom can we go?  You have the words of eternal life.  We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.” (John 6:67-68)  Peter and the rest have nowhere else they can go, so they turn to Jesus, who is all that they need.
Friends, we live in times when it is very easy to see the evil at work all around.  But how we, as the disciples of Jesus, stand firm against this evil by speaking the truth, and doing what is right, and speaking good news, and having faith, and trusting in salvation, and relying on the Holy Spirit, is the booster shot the world needs.  Standing firm takes courage, I know. . .  But we are surrounded by the powerful love of God who gives us the strength to stand firm against any and every evil.
The Prince of Darkness, grim?  We tremble not for him. . . because of one little word:  love.  May we live and serve the One whose gracious and powerful love is all that we need, trusting in the strength that God’s love provides.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Kobe Bryant’s 32 most iconic basketball moments, ranked
Tumblr media
There were so many memorable NBA moments in Kobe Bryant’s career.
Counting down the most memorable moments of Kobe Bryant’s NBA career
Kobe Bryant’s life was cut short at the age of 41 on Sunday, along with the lives of 13-year-old daughter Gianna Bryant, six other passengers, and a pilot flying to the Mamba Academy on Kobe’s Sikorsky S-76B helicopter. This is a tragedy on multiple levels that goes far deeper than the loss of a famous basketball player.
For basketball fans, Bryant was a player that seared many of the sport’s most iconic moments in recent history. It’s impossible to remember them all, but in honor of his two jersey numbers (24 + 8), here are 32 that I’ll never forget.
32. The air-ball fest that started it all
youtube
It’s only fitting that we begin with his lowest on-court moment, which also happened to be his first significant one as a pro. Bryant averaged only 15.5 minutes per game as a rookie on the that 1996-97 Lakers team, but in that moment, they needed him out of necessity. Veteran shooting guard Byron Scott sat with a wrist injury, small forward Robert Horry was ejected in the third quarter for shoving Jeff Hornacek, and Shaquille O’Neal fouled out with 1:46 to play in regulation after foolishly biting on a Karl Malone pump fake. That left a teenage Bryant as their best hope to extend their season.
It took all of that to give him a formative professional experience that would drive the rest of his career.
31. A dozen threes in a game?
youtube
Fun fact: Kobe was shooting 28 percent from three-point range through the first 34 games of the 2002-03 season. My favorite part, via the Seattle Post-Intelligencer game story:
In fact, before the game, Los Angeles Times’ columnist T.J. Simers informed Bryant that his daughter — a state champion shooter — could beat Bryant in a three-point shooting contest. He asked Bryant to bet money on the contest, the proceeds going to charity.
30. The passes to himself off the backboard
youtube
Kobe wasn’t the first to pull off this move — that’d be Tracy McGrady, who did it in the 2002 NBA All-Star Game. But it’s befitting of Kobe’s audacity that he did it in a playoff game in 2008 against the Jazz, then even more spectacularly in a postseason game against Houston the very next season.
29. Behind the back on the Nuggets
youtube
The current Lakers have a a set play where LeBron James launches a full-court pass to a posting-up Anthony Davis off an opponents’ free throw. Here’s how I described it a month and a half ago:
In those situations, the Lakers like to take Davis off the rebounding line and put him on the opposite block for early post-ups the other way. (They borrowed this tactic from Alvin Gentry, who used it during the Pelicans’ brief Davis-DeMarcus Cousins twin towers era). LA inbounds to LeBron, and he rushes the ball up to feed Davis as quickly as possible, giving him space to go one-on-one before help arrives.
As the year has progressed, LeBron has become more audacious with his post entry passes. He’ll sometimes eschew dribbling up the court and instead toss 60-foot bombs on a rope to Davis’ waiting arms.
I’d like to think Kobe’s 2003 dunk inspired them.
28. Sharing 2009 All-Star MVP honors with his nemesis
youtube
Kobe’s ongoing feud with Shaq was so multi-layered that it has its own seven-part Wikipedia page. It’s hard to know when it really started and when it really tapered down, because both men weren’t exactly the most reliable narrators. (Remember when Shaq told Stephen A. Smith that “it was all marketing?” Nice try, big fella). But their 2009 All-Star experience is considered a key de-escalator in the overall cannon. As Shaq told USA Today’s Sam Amick in 2016:
“Everything became cool (with Bryant) my last All-Star Game in Phoenix,” said O’Neal. “Me and him got the co-MVP (at All-Stars). It was a great time, (and) my son Shareef, who was like nine (years old) at the time (was there).
“I was just going to give the trophy to Kobe, and Kobe looks at my little man and says, ‘Here you go, Shareef.’ ... I was kind of surprised that he remembered his name. He was like, ‘Here you go, Shareef. Here’s the trophy.’ Then I knew everything that happened (during the Lakers days) was silly.”
27. Welcome to the NBA, Dwight Howard
youtube
This was the first time Kobe tormented Dwight. It wouldn’t be the last.
26. Welcome to the NBA, Yao Ming
youtube
This game took place late in Yao’s 2002-03 rookie season, and Yao actually held his own with 24 points and 14 rebounds before fouling out. But the Lakers still got the last laugh, winning without Shaq in double overtime thanks to Kobe’s 52 points. “I feel like I want to get to bed quickly,” Yao said through an interpreter, via the New York Times. “Once I am asleep, everything is in the past.”
Fun fact: the voice you hear on TNT’s color commentary is none other than Jeff Van Gundy. Four months later, the Rockets hired him to be their head coach.
25. Welcome to the NBA, Ben Wallace
youtube
Your eyes don’t deceive you: that is indeed UNLV’s Thomas and Mack Center, future home of the indie-turned-mainstream NBA Summer League. At the time, it was the host of an otherwise forgettable 1997-98 preseason game between the Washington Wizards and the Los Angeles Lakers.
I’ll let Marcus Vanderberg of the now-defunct Ball Don’t Lie blog (miss u) take it from here:
With time winding down at the end of the first quarter, Bryant crossed over journeyman guard Jimmy Oliver and set his sights on the basket. Ben Wallace — either not knowing any better or proving that he didn’t give a damn even back in 1997 — stepped up in the paint and became the first person to find himself on a Kobe poster. Bryant took off from inside the free-throw line and demolished Wallace with a ferocious dunk that got Hall of Fame broadcaster Chick Hearn just a wee bit excited:
“Slaaaaaam dunk! Wooooo!”
24. Welcome to the NBA (Finals), Todd MacCulloch
youtube
Calling the 2002 NBA Finals anticlimactic is like saying snow is inconvenient for drivers. But in case there was any remaining suspense, this Kobe slam in the third quarter of Game 1 vanquished it. Eleven years later, ABC commemorated this dunk with one of the coolest Finals promos in recent memory.
23. Not yet, Kevin Durant
youtube
I’m a sucker for young buck vs. old head duels. This one wasn’t the most artful contest, nor was it the one that ended a playoff series. Kobe and KD both dropped more than 30 points, but they weren’t guarding each other. Both made big shot after big shot, but neither made a field goal in the final two minutes. It was ultimately Jeff Green’s missed three that ended things. Still, this game foreshadowed a passing of the torch and was a sign that the Thunder were going to be a damn problem for years to come. As Kobe told Durant and Russell Westbrook after Game 6, “Glad we’re done with you guys.”
22. Quiet, Denver fans
youtube
This was another epic Bryant performance against a younger peer (Carmelo Anthony) that has been lost to history. The scissor-kick three Kobe hit over J.R. Smith to give the Lakers a one-point lead with just over a minute left is still seared in my mind. So is that scowl, a Kobe specialty that peaked in that moment.
21. Speaking of sucking the energy out of the building
youtube
With 16 words, TNT’s Kevin Harlan simultaneously captured a single moment in Kobe’s career and the enduring quality that made him such a basketball villain to so many non-Lakers fans.
20. The buzzer beater on Dwyane Wade
youtube
Kobe had many regular-season buzzer beaters, but this one stands out because he redeemed himself for missing a game-winning attempt a few seconds prior.
19. Scoring 61 at Madison Square Garden
youtube
The Madison Square Garden mystique was cool, but I’ll most remember the spin move and jumper Kobe made on Wilson Chandler to cap the night off. Technical brilliance mixed with ingenious creativity.
18. Kobe Bryant 62, Dallas Mavericks 61
youtube
During the third quarter, Lakers TV analyst Stu Lantz delivered a prophetic line. “The only guy that can stop No. 8 tonight,” Lantz proclaimed, “is Phil Jackson.” It turns out Kobe was the one who declined Jackson’s invitation to re-enter the game in the fourth quarter, but the point still stands.
17. The infamous non-flinch
youtube
Like many Kobe moments, this one ended up being too good to be true. Still, I had to include it.
16. Vanquishing the “Kobe Stopper”
youtube
Ruben Patterson was once an end-of-the-bench Laker who, according to legend, nicknamed himself the “Kobe Stopper” for the way he defended Bryant in practice. (As with other Kobe stories, this one is more myth than reality). Patterson eventually left the team and established himself as a key defensive player for Seattle and then Portland.
That brings us to the 2003-04 season finale. The Blazers had just been eliminated from the playoffs for the first time in 22 years, while the Lakers needed a win to clinch the Pacific Division. Still, Portland played hard, and would’ve stolen a victory had Bryant not hit two impossible long threes to end regulation and overtime. The first was with Patterson in his jersey, while the second was a moonball that fell into the hoop as Patterson and Theo Ratliff rushed to close out.
With the win, the Lakers rose to the No. 2 seed and dropped the Kings to No. 4. That made a big difference in their eventual NBA Finals run.
15. The Magic never had a chance
youtube
Another brilliant Kobe playoff performance that has been lost to time. It wasn’t his most prolific or most important, but it set the tone for a series that was only going to go one way. I most enjoyed Kobe performances that showcased his all-around game, and this one was a textbook example. Here’s an old Silver Screen and Roll breakdown that’s well worth your time.
14. The 50-point streak
youtube
The league’s current pace-and-space trajectory may render this streak less impressive with time, but it was absurd in the moment. Here’s a summary.
13. Take that, Alvin Gentry
youtube
It’s easy to forget how close the Lakers came to losing the 2010 Western Conference Finals. They dominated the first two games, only to be flummoxed by a daring Suns tactic to use a 2-3 zone to limit LA’s inside dominance. LA never really solved the Suns’ wrinkle, but maintained a 3-2 series advantage after Metta World Peace’s serendipitous buzzer-beating putback in Game 5.
That set the stage for Kobe to brutally shut the door in Game 6. After mostly deferring in the first half, he staved off a furious Suns comeback with a series of impossible shots. His second-to-last bucket was a spinning fadeaway 21-footer over Grant Hill and Channing Frye to push the Lakers’ lead back to five. His final hoop: a pump-fake, rise-up jumper over Hill from nearly the same spot as the shot clock expired. As it dropped through the net, Kobe gave Suns coach Alvin Gentry a gentle butt tap, as if to say, Nice try.
“There’s an intense game going on and you almost have to laugh at what he does,” was Gentry’s interpretation. “I mean, I thought we played great defense on him. He just made tough shot after tough shot.”
And Kobe’s?
“It looked like a much tougher shot than it was.”
12. See ya, Sacramento
youtube
My favorite Kobe playoff performance once you separate out the stakes. It had everything we’ve come to know about Kobe.
He flew back to Los Angeles during the one-day break after Game 3 because Vanessa was in the hospital. Once he felt confident she was OK, he returned to Sacramento late on the night before an afternoon Game 4.
He embarrassed nemesis Vlade Divac with a thunderous poster dunk early in the game.
During the second quarter, he told an enraged Chris Webber not to chuck the ball away after an offensive foul because he wanted to beat the Kings at full strength. NBC’s Jim Gray said this was “a real good show of sportsmanship.” That’s one way to put it.
When interviewed at halftime, Kobe told Gray he was happy the Lakers were losing because they needed a challenge.
Kobe bullied his way for 19 free throws and 16 rebounds.
His final bucket involved him splitting an attempted double-team for a layup to put the Lakers up four.
He told reporters that he viewed the game as “a life-or-death situation,” even though the Lakers already had a 3-0 series lead and had won their previous 14 games. (Not to mention Vanessa’s real-life health scare).
11. See ya, San Antonio
youtube
All of the above, distilled into one play.
10. The unofficial passing of the torch
youtube
We all figured this would be Michael Jordan’s last game against Kobe Bryant. The stars were aligned for something special. It still exceeded expectations.
It looked to be MJ’s night early on. He nailed his first four jumpers, then picked off a lazy Shaquille O’Neal pass and took it to the house. But then Kobe started shooting and scoring, and shooting and scoring, and shooting and scoring, and shooting and scoring. Twenty-five points in five minutes. Forty-two at halftime. Fifty-five in the end, mirroring the double nickel Jordan dropped against the Knicks in 1995.
“It came to a point where there was that curiosity factor: was he going to hit 80? I’m sure it went through his head,” said Phil Jackson, foreshadowing the future.
(There’s a story going around that Kobe wanted to get payback on Jordan for dissing him after an early-season Wizards win, but the timeline doesn’t quite add up).
9. That 6-24 game
youtube
Let’s keep it 100 for a second: Kobe was awful in Game 7 of the 2010 NBA Finals and was ultimately saved by Pau Gasol and Metta World Peace. But the Lakers’ ultimate triumph was also a fitting tribute to Kobe’s determination in the face of failure.
8. The alley-oop to complete the Portland comeback
youtube
History remembers this play as a symbol of the Kobe-Shaq relationship before it got messy. The reality is more complex, yet also makes the moment even richer. From Roland Lazenby’s 2016 book Showboat: The Life of Kobe Bryant:
Witnesses could hardly believe what they were seeing — a bonding moment between the center and the guard — but the victory was proof. It was as if Bryant had refused to get discouraged, and that paid off by season’s end. ‘I think they came to respect each other,’ [longtime Phil Jackson assistant coach Tex] Winter said, although the coaches could never be sure what the players were merely doing as a public gesture and what they truly felt. Scoop Jackson, for example, saw O’Neal running around at game’s end, looking to celebrate with anyone but his foil.
Asked about O’Neal, Bryant shrugged. ‘We just do it our separate ways,’ he said. ‘That’s all we did all season long. It just depended on what we needed in certain situations. So even though we go our separate ways, it all linked up in the end.’
In 2009, blogger Jason Kottke noticed something funny on the unedited version of the clip, which has sadly been removed from YouTube: (That last part is a stretch, alas).
O’Neal throws it down and the camera follows him as he heads down the court yelling in celebration, totally blowing right past Kobe, who has his hand out to high-five Shaq. Kobe half-heartedly grabs at O’Neal’s forearm as he passes; Shaq doesn’t even notice. [...] The unedited clip of the play1 shows an awkward ending to this awkward moment. After celebrating with the Lakers bench, Shaq looks for Kobe and the two finally acknowledge the play together. But it’s a brief moment; they slap hands and go their separate ways, foreshadowing Shaq’s departure four years later.
Knowing this only deepens my appreciation of the moment. The beauty of basketball is that two people without much real-life chemistry can become simpatico in an instant when they step between the lines.
7. Saving the Redeem Team
youtube
Kobe’s most notable impact on Team USA was intangible. He was the last star to commit to playing in the 2008 Olympics, and his commitment signaled the importance of reclaiming basketball supremacy to a younger crew of stars that included the future Banana Boat crew. His leadership and work ethic rubbed off on those players, elevating them to levels they may not have reached otherwise.
But I’ll remember the way Kobe pushed them over the finish line in the fourth quarter of the gold medal game when Spain’s zone confused everyone else. Whenever Spain got close, Kobe had the answer. They couldn’t stop him.
Months later, he hung his gold medal in Pau Gasol’s locker during Lakers training camp in an attempt to motivate him. Ruthless, uncomfortably cruel, and ultimately successful: straight out of the Kobe playbook.
6. “Bryant, for the win. Baaaaaaang”
youtube
This was when Kobe’s individual supremacy peaked. A few reasons why:
It came at the end of Kobe’s best individual season, when he averaged 35 points a game in leading a decrepit Lakers roster to 45 wins and a postseason berth. Imagine Russell Westbrook’s MVP season, but even more individually overwhelming. That was Kobe’s 2005-06.
The Suns actually wanted to play the Lakers in the first round. According to Jack McCallum’s book :07 Seconds or Less: My Season on the Bench with the Runnin’ and Gunnin’ Phoenix Suns, the Suns believed they could easily exploit the Lakers’ transition defense and bait Kobe into selfish play. They even rested key players for a late-season ABC contest to help facilitate the matchup.
The final 12.6 seconds of regulation were wild. With the Suns up five, the much-maligned Smush Parker, who was 1-14 from downtown in the series to date, hit a standstill three to cut the lead to two. Steve Nash, of all people, turned it over on the ensuing inbound, and Kobe sidestepped around Raja Bell and hit the game-tying floater over Boris Diaw’s outstretched arms. Absurd shot. (D’Antoni then drew up a beautiful out of bounds lob play for James Jones that failed because the officials ignored Luke Walton’s blatant hold.)
The Suns still led by one in the closing seconds of overtime when Nash bizarrely dribbled to the sideline. He attempted to pivot away from Walton and Lamar Odom and signaled for a timeout. But instead of calling a foul or honoring Nash’s request, the officials called a jump ball, even though a still photo later revealed Walton’s foot was out of bounds as he tied Nash up. Walton tipped it to Kobe and you know the rest.
At the time, it felt like the Suns were cursed and Kobe was destined to find a way to win no matter the circumstances. Which, of course, made Phoenix’s rally from a 3-1 deficit to win the series even more improbable.
5. The free throws after tearing his Achilles
youtube
Longtime Lakers trainer Gary Viti once said that this was Kobe’s “gutsiest moment.” I don’t think Viti was referring to Kobe’s physical pain — a fully ruptured Achilles actually hurts less in the moment than many other serious injuries. Instead, I think he was noting Kobe’s strength to fight through his mental anguish at the thought of his body finally breaking down after years of feeling indestructible.
Watching Kobe’s postgame interview only drives home that point. He looks like a man finally coming to terms with his own athletic mortality.
4. A legend is born
youtube
Most remember Kobe’s first championship run for the Game 7 comeback against the Blazers, but the six-game NBA Finals series win over the Pacers was no walk in the park. Kobe badly injured his ankle in a Game 2 victory when Indiana’s Jalen Rose slid under him on a mid-range jumper. (Years later, Rose admitted he did it on purpose). Kobe missed Game 3, an easy Indiana victory, and was a doubt for Game 4. He refused to shoot layups during pregame warmups, telling NBC’s Ahmad Rashad that he was “saving it for the game.” The game went to overtime, and with 2:29 left, Shaquille O’Neal fouled out jumping for a rebound with Rik Smits.
Remember: the Lakers hadn’t won a title yet and were up against a vastly more experienced team on the road. Lose this game, and the series would be tied 2-2 with Indiana hosting Game 5. The MVP was on the bench, and his co-star was operating at less than full capacity. The series swung in the balance.
Kobe’s response:
A vicious crossover and pull-up jumper on Reggie Miller on the next play.
A rise-up shot from nearly the same spot over a flummoxed Mark Jackson.
A crucial block from behind on an Austin Croshere layup that would have cut the lead back to one.
A reverse tip-in after the Pacers successfully denied him the ball with 5.9 seconds left to shove the advantage back to three.
This was when his clutch legend was born.
3. A curtain call for the ages
youtube
A cartoonish mockery of the game of basketball for three quarters that turned into something magical by the end. That it upstaged the Warriors breaking the goddamn single-season wins record made it even more memorable.
What a perfect way for Kobe to go out.
2. 81
youtube
Kobe’s basketball reputation is built on the premise that he plays his best when the moment is biggest. It’s ironic, then, that his best individual performance came in one of the most anonymous settings of his career.
The game took place on Jan. 22, 2006, a Sunday that was cleared for the NFL’s two conference championship games. Regular Lakers announcer Joel Meyers was calling the NFC title game, leaving backup Bill MacDonald to fill in. Jack Nicholson didn’t show up. Several other regular celebrities begged off the game.
Early on, there was little indication that Kobe was about to have one of those nights. The Raptors came out in a 2-3 zone that cut off the rest of Kobe’s teammates. They took a double-digit lead and swelled it to 18 to start the third quarter. Kobe had 26 first-half points: noteworthy, but hardly unusual.
In fact, it was part of the plan. As Toronto point guard Jose Calderon told ESPN:
People always ask me, “How is it possible to let one guy score 81 points?” Because we were winning almost the whole game. He can keep scoring as long as we’re up. Yeah, he’s killing us, but the rest of the team is doing nothing, and we’re winning. We didn’t think he would keep scoring like he was.
Once Kobe started heating up the third quarter, Raptors players pleaded for a change in strategy. Instead, coach Sam Mitchell stayed the course. “It was the most frustrating thing,” guard Mike James told ESPN. “Maybe that should have been one of those times where we were rebellious and went against Coach’s will.”
To this day, Mitchell defends his decision. As he told CBS Sports’ James Herbert in 2017:
It’s always funny to me ‘cause I look at the other side, if we win the game. Because it’s not like we got beat by 30. We were winning the game. My thought process during that was one, how can we slow him down?, and two, we can still win the game. As great a game as he was having, I thought we had just as good a chance to win the game. We were winning. So, you know, you’re trying to stop him because if you can stop him, it increases your chance to win. But also, you’re saying even if we don’t stop him, we can still win this game.
He gives himself too much credit, but he also has a point. Whatever the Raptors were doing was working for a large stretch of the game. Then, out of nowhere, Kobe caught fire and directed the sports world’s attention to a game they otherwise would have ignored.
And yet, as magical as this night was, it won’t stick with me as much as ...
1. Kobe and Gigi, geeking out
youtube
... a father and a daughter — a teacher and a student, a mentor and mentee — gleefully sitting courtside while nerding out over a piece of basketball minutiae in a mundane regular-season game between two losing teams.
I’ve watched this sequence hundreds of times in the last 48 hours, and it still gets me. The world didn’t just lose a basketball star Sunday. It lost a past icon and a future legend. It lost a proud father and a happy daughter, sharing in a routine moment while doing what they both loved.
Rest in peace, Kobe and Gianna Bryant.

"I was in my house when he asked"- Who pays for dates?
Like most topics where men and women are concerned, paying for dates has been brought to the front burner in recent times. These are some of the excuses I have heard from ladies why they should/ shouldn’t pay for dates (I am not sure why this is even an argument)
1. Ladies say; “whoever asks for the date should pay” which makes sense abi? Well, not exactly. Even with the “shoot-your-shot era” which saw the number of ladies shooting their shots and even proposing increase, the reality is that most ladies will still never ask for a date (because according to them, they are afraid of rejections *rolls eyes*), would rather wait till the guy asks and then use that as an excuse not to pay. Oh and guys, even when she does ask you out, she still expects you to pay. See (3) below.
2. Then there is a the popular line; “I was in my house/ office (insert wherever) when he came to beg me/drag me out so he should pay”. Again, I really dont get it. Were you supposed to be in his house before he asked? Like the initial excuse given above, ladies are most likely not going to be in the guy’s house or even anywhere around him when he asks so guess who pays?
3. “I agree ladies should offer to pay, should leave home with their own money (aka vex money) but a real gentlemen will never allow her to actually pay”. To this, I — lol’ed. Why so many excuses? I agree sometimes a gentleman may decide to cover the bills (I honestly think more gentlemen should refuse to cover these bills tbh) but that is not a excuse for ladies not to cover their bills, even if it is 20–30% of the total. I think that a true gentleman is first financially prudent before wasting his precious resources on dates that may go nowhere as a date really means nothing. Heck, he may not even get a second date. As kids, we all defended why our parents should eat out when they say "there is rice at home". As we grew older and have our own money on the table, our own kids et al, we realize that truly, there is rice at home. Similarly, the reason most ladies are defending this “gentleman” narrative is because their money isn't on the table.
4. Some men feel emasculated especially if they are insecure when a lady pays. Here, I can feel a lady’s pain particularly as emasculated men dont have a sign-post on their head that says “I am emasculated” so they try to be careful and not step on “fragile egos” before some dude will do a thread on twitter saying “she paid for the date and didnt make him feel like a man” or something similarly foolish. These are the same men who have a sense of entitlement after paying on the date i.e.; I spent XYZ amount and for that reason, we must have sex and insert something ridiculous. These men also worry that if she pays she would lord it over him. Well, well, well, see who finally has a taste of their own medicine? Anyways, while we look for solutions for these men, I implore my sisters to be careful out there. In theory though, paying for your date allows you to spot this emasculation quickly.
5. Ladies go “I cannot respect a man who allows me to pay on a date”. Such silliness! Hanty, keep your respect oh. Its not kuku like your respect will put money in his account or like it can buy Benz. Abeg shift!
6. From a more financially prudent perspective, Google 2018 says average salary in Lagos is $23,745 approx. N8m; I dont need any soothsayer to tell me that this is untrue, loool!). Salary Explorer says salaries in Lagos range between 65,368 NGN per month (minimum salary) to 2,138,541 NGN per month (maximum salary). I think average salary in Lagos is between N50,000 to N150,000 and accounts for 60–80% of salary earners in Lagos (my opinion). Putting together accommodation, feeding, transportation and other personal needs (himself and his parents/siblings), savings and investments, how much is left really to go on dates? Especially one where he would still be required to foot 100% of the bill?
7. A man should pay because he is “the provider”; really? When did men’s names become “Jehovah Jireh”? We are not married yet so this really doesn't apply. If you cannot bring yourself to split payments on a date you both enjoyed, what is the probability that you can split income and expenses after marriage?
Why I think more ladies should pay for dates?
It removes the sense of entitlement that some men in (4) have and creates some sort of balance should the ladies stop being emotional about issues like this and more realistic.
Like the idea of shooting your shot, it gives ladies a bigger pool to choose from in the search of the life partner.
It removes the worry most guys face about funding dates and eases the conversation into more important topics….like getting to know each other.
It eases out emasculated men especially when ladies paying on dates is now more commonplace.
End.

Rakasta (AD&D) [Guest Article!]
[Mod’s Note: I must give especial thanks to @temporiludi for guest writing this article! So very thoughtful. :D] So! Cat-people. Everyone’s favorite race to cringe at when the local self-proclaimed “otaku” brings them to the game table. And while they insist their character looks almost entirely human, save for the “kawaii” additions of cat ears and matching tail, most iterations of a feline-humanoid race are closer in appearance to their quadrupedal real-life counterparts than the ever popular cat-girl of Japanese anime. Today we’ll be exploring a race of cat folk introduced in The Isle of Dread module for AD&D, the Rakasta (NOT Rakshasa). At a glance, they resemble the Khajiit of The Elder Scrolls series. Upon further inspection however…no, yeah. They’re Khajiit. But stronger.
General:
“Rakasta are a race of intelligent, nomadic, catlike humanoids. They are a proud, barbaric race of warriors who, while not prone to initiating hostilities, quickly respond when provoked.”
First off, it may be a fun drinking game (if you’re of age) to take a shot every time the monster manual uses the term “barbaric” to describe an entire race of people.
On second thought, that would probably cause severe liver damage by the time you get to the letter C. So (cat)scratch that.
With that out of the way, it’s good to see some positive adjectives attributed to the Rakasta. Intelligent makes sense, since their stat block clocks them as Very intelligent, and the fact that they won’t attack unless provoked plays nicely into their Neutral alignment. It makes sense that they would be quick to defend themselves if they’re attacked; they probably deal with tons of bandits and highwaymen on their travels hoping to get at their belongings.
“Rakasta walk upright, much like humans, with an agile, feline grace. They have feline heads and are covered with soft, tawny fur. Most fur coloration ranges from light tan to dark brown.”
Well, I would hope that they’re at least a little agile. But anyone who has owned a cat before knows that the “feline grace” only activates for about 10 minutes a day. After it’s used up, all that’s left are crash landings and getting stuck in places nobody thought they could even get to. Also, only various shades of brown? What about black cats? Siamese? Stripes? Spots? I find it hard to believe the generic tabby cat dominates the Rakasta world.
“Rakasta have catlike eyes, most of which are brilliant green. A Rakasta has a nonprehensile tail 4 to 6 feet long.”
Wait, catlike? You’re telling me a race of anthropomorphic cat people have eyes that are only like a cat’s? How are they similar? How are they different? Does catlike mean they have thin vertical pupils that dilate into larger circles when they’re focused on something? Nowhere does it say they have any form of Darkvision, so that could be what separates them…but not giving them Darkvision seems rather counterproductive.
Nevertheless, a long nonprehensile tail makes perfect sense and I’d be miffed if they didn’t include them. Also, thank the Gods they’re not prehensile. I do not want monkey-cat-people. No thanks.
“Rakasta speak Common and their own language. Some of the more primitive Rakasta speak in a purring voice with many rolled r’s and hissed s’s.”
More…primitive. Great. If we’re considering that a synonym for “barbaric,” then take another shot.
Now, this implies that the standard Rakasta doesn’t speak with a purring voice, rolled r’s and hissed s’s. So, what, they sound like a run-of-the-mill adventurer with a vaguely British accent when speaking Common? I find that hard to believe, especially if their language (which is so conveniently not given a name) does involve rolled r’s and hissed s’s. Also, why the hell is that considered a primitive way of speaking? Dozens of real world languages roll their r’s in a variety of ways, and even English hisses some of its s’s in certain words (the double s at the end of success, for example). But, no. They’re a barbaric race. Their language is primitive. Ugh.
Combat:
“Rakasta are fierce fighters who neither ask for nor give any quarter. Eschewing normal weapons, Rakasta rely on their claws and bites. Since a Rakasta’s claws inflict only 1d2 points of damage, the creatures usually employ special metal war claws called kasas; worn on the paw like a glove, a kasa inflicts 1d4 points of damage on a successful attack.”
Alright, so if you’re dumb enough to attack a peaceful caravan of friendly cat people, you’re going to get ripped to shreds. I like that. They probably deal with expensive artifacts and high amounts of coin on the day-to-day, making them a prime target for the occasional (cat)burglar. And being a race of people who just want to be left alone? No wonder they show no mercy, and the fact that they ask for none in return shows just how badass these cats really are. However, 1d2 damage from a claw attack isn’t going to be dropping any highwaymen anytime soon. Their bark is probably worse than their bite, as it were.
It’s good that they included a way to augment their damage, though. The Kasas are a neat variation on the clawed-glove family of weaponry, and makes perfect sense for a culture that has favored their natural abilities over sword and shield. The jump from 1d2 to 1d4 isn’t much to celebrate, however, and really just adds an exotic curio for the standard adventuring party to loot once they’ve taken the caravan down.
“A Rakasta who strikes with both claws (or both kasas) in the same round can choose to rake with both rear claws. Rear claw attacks are rolled separately and cause 1d3 points of damage on a successful strike.”
Hold on. Rear claw attacks? Are you telling me these cat people can do a Kangaroo Jack-esque kick with their back legs in addition to their front claw attacks? Well that’s badass as all hell. These guys really are nimble fighters.
“Certain Rakasta ride saber-toothed tigers into battle.”
Sweet Jiminy Christmas. [Mod’s Note: The use of domesticated Ice Age fauna is a quick and easy way to immediately gain my interest, as well.]
“These tiger riders, known as the Hatra, are considered the bravest and strongest of the Rakasta warriors, and only they can hold the respect of the saber-toothed tigers. Hatra have 3+1 Hit Dice, a minimum of 15 hit points, and +1 bonus to damage rolls.”
Okay, okay. This is what I like to see. Large and powerful warriors able to tame savage wildcats and mounting them to ride into battle. The Hatra seem like the perfect defense against anyone stupid enough to threaten a pride of Rakasta. Not only do you have to take down the saber-toothed tigers that they ride, but also the warriors that were able to tame the damn things. Which is just another reason why you shouldn’t do that. Seriously, leave these guys alone, for your own sake.
“The Hatra use special saddles that enable them to leap as far as 20 feet from their mounts and still attack in the same round. The saddles allow the Hatra to fight unhindered while mounted, using both hands for attacks yet still maintaining control of their saber-toothed mounts.”
Here’s some of that feline agility we were talking about earlier. So not only can they leap 20 feet towards you, but they can also strike you with their claws as they’re doing so. They incur no penalties while fighting mounted, and they don’t even need to keep one hand on the reigns. With skills like this, no wonder their unarmed claws only do 1d2. Any more and it would be completely impossible for a low-level adventuring party to handle. Which they shouldn’t. Because fighting these guys is a bad idea.
Habitat/Society:
“The nomadic Rakasta are organized into prides of 6d10 adult Rakasta plus an additional 25% of that number in noncombatant offspring. Each pride also has 1d12 saber-toothed tigers. When not on the move, each Rakasta pride sets up its own temporary settlements, composed of many colorful tens and pavilions.”
So that’s what, a maximum of 60 adults and 15 kittens, but only 12 of the adults would be Hatra?  I guess the Hatra are just so dang powerful and intimidating that they can get away with not having an entire platoon of tiger-riders guarding every pride.
Also, I am always wary whenever there’s a statistic for noncombatant offspring. While on the one hand, it’s much more realistic that families would be travelling together, but on the other hand, it creates the awkward situation of “What do we do with the children now that we’ve just murdered every adult they have ever known or called family?” If the party’s decent folk, they wouldn’t have attacked the damn pride in the first place. That leaves the unsavory party to either slaughter the children in cold blood, leave them to die in the wilderness, or any other horrible act they could think of. Again, not cool. [Mod’s Note: I mean, I guess the party could adopt them? But then again perhaps the people who just got done murdering their parents would not be the best parental replacements for these freshly orphaned kids...]
Moving on, it’s good to see that their lodgings aren’t small tents or pitiable sleeping bags, but actually representative of a thriving and artistic culture. It would almost be like a flea market to the uninitiated adventurer, with dozens of stalls to explore and hopefully find that one special thing that calls out to their coin purse.
“Rakasta possess excellent artisan skills. They typically own many bright rugs and silk tapestries of fine workmanship; artfully crafted bowls and drinking cups, and other items of value. These items are found in place of gems and jewelry in the treasure of a pride of Rakasta.”
So they don’t wear jewelry or gemstones? Interesting. I suppose they deal exclusively in coin and trade, then, which does make some sense. But no gemstones whatsoever? It’s bold choice. Would that imply their culture may not value gems of any kind, and decorating yourself with them is as silly as wearing a necklace made of pebbles you found outside your house?
“Each pride is led by a chief with at least 5+1 Hit Dice, a minimum of 24 hit points, and a +3 bonus to all damage rolls. The chief is always accompanied by six of the best Hatra and their saber-toothed mounts. The chief’s word is law, and is obeyed without question.”
So they have a chiefdom, which does make sense for the whole “pride of lions” sort of theme we’ve got going here. Typically, a chief is appointed via kinship, implying that a pride is either one large extended family, or made up of smaller families that decide upon whose elder holds the position every time a new chief is needed. But, looking at the chief’s statistics, if they’re so dang strong, why do they need 6 Hatra accompanying them? While an elite guard protecting the chief makes sense, that could potentially be half of all of the Hatra travelling with the pride.  It seems that a pride values the wellbeing of its leader over the wellbeing of people, which is…kind of sad. But hey, if they’re a good chief, they’ll order their guards to protect the rest of the pride during a crisis situation.
“Each pride has a Rakasta cleric of 4 Hit Dice who casts spells as a 4th-level priest. More powerful clerics are rumored to exist, as well as Rakasta with wizard abilities, perhaps as high as 7th level.”
Ohh, okay, so now we’re getting into magic. Up until now there’s been no mention of magic users in Rakasta culture, but it seems that a divine caster is present in every pride, no matter how small. Probably serves as the pride’s medical expert, as well as the link between the pride and their hereby still unnamed deities. The fact that more powerful casters are merely rumors implies that they either don’t exist, or the Rakasta don’t want outsiders knowing the upper limits of their magical capabilities. Perhaps they even use this as a tool of control? Keeping their magic users in the shadows so that they can call upon them when the chief needs something to get done…discreetly. Secret magical cat folk hitmen anyone?
“The Hatra, as the finest warriors in a pride, enjoy a special place in Rakasta society. Hatra are held in high honor, since this culture values combat prowess over all else. Rakasta also value their code of conduct, known as the Sri’raka. This code dictates a warrior’s behavior. Among the most noteworthy tenets:”
Good! So it’s been implied up until this point, but now we have confirmation that they’re a strength-based society. To that, it makes perfect sense that the chief is the most physically adept member of the pride, and perhaps hasn’t gained the title through age and wisdom, but instead earned the title themselves through proving their strength to the pride. It’s probably the case that every chief was at one point a Hatra themselves, as it has been stated that they are the strongest members of a pride, strong enough to tame and mount vicious saber-toothed tigers. Also, I’m excited to see what code these brutal tiger-riders hold themselves to.
Let’s take a look!
“No challenge to fight is ever refused.”
Hmm. So once a pride has been attacked, they have no choice but to engage in combat? That makes sense. But does it carry over into internal affairs? Like is someone wanted to challenge the chief for leadership of the pride. Of course, the chief’s word is law, but it’s likely they gained their position by issuing the a similar challenge to the chief before them? By their own rules, they would be forced to battle for the crown. Ultimately, it seems to be a matter of pride. Heh.
“Wounded are never left behind; carry them or kill them.”
Or kill them? Geeze, that’s harsh. I hope they get a say in whether or not they’re carried home or straight up killed. But I guess this is also so they can’t be taken prisoner, which can’t be a good thing in Rakasta society…
“Better to die in battle than in one’s sleep.”
Ah, here we go. That good ol’ “proper death” dealeo. A true warrior would want to go out in the most honorable way possible, which turns out to be struck down in combat. Come to think of it, that’s probably the way any challenge issued against the current chief ends. Either the challenger is killed, showing they weren’t the strongest and therefore didn’t deserve the chiefdom, or the old chief is killed, granting them an honorable death at the hand of the strongest member of the pride. Brutal.
“Give no mercy; never expect it.”
This was mentioned before, and from what we’ve read so far it’s pretty consistent. Go hard, or die trying.
“Retreat is permissible only in order to regroup. A new attack must be launched against the other force within two sunrises.”
Interesting. So this goes back to the 2nd tenet. During a tactical retreat, it may not be possible to gather up any injured, so it’s much easier to strike them down on the way out. At least they have two days to go back in for a second strike, but something tells me that if they weren’t successful the first time around, they’ll probably be just as unlucky on the second assault. [Mod’s Note: I wonder how many chieftains have used “We’re not retreating, we’re ‘advancing in a different direction’” as a face-saving semantic device...]
“Never surrender. Those who would exist as prisoners are not Rakasta.”
Oh wow, I was right! A Rakasta whose been captured is disowned from its entire race…I can’t imagine how bad that would be for the sorry sap who got left behind and wasn’t killed for some reason. They’d probably deal with a major identify crisis and off themselves at the first chance they get. The honorable thing for a dishonored warrior to do is to finish the job themselves. Quite the tragedy.
Well that was a bundle of joy to read about. I don’t imagine the other tenets are any more uplifting.
Ecology:
“The Rakasta make reliable trading partners when attention can be turned from battles. Rakasta are excellent hunters, and they keep the game herds from overpopulating.”
Well that’s not very much information. But I suppose it’s better than nothing…
Again, I’m digging the positive adjectives used to describe these guys. They’re reliable trading partners, which makes plenty of sense, but if they’re non-aggressors, why does their attention have to be turned away from battles in order to trade? I feel like this line is just another reminder that they’re “barbaric” and prone to violence, even if that sentiment was contradicted at the very beginning of their description. Being a society that values strength and merit doesn’t make an entire culture primitive or less-than-civilized. The Romans considered themselves to be the greatest culture to ever exist, and they were some of the most brutal people to ever walk the earth! But they still had literature, art, architecture, complex social ties and reverence for their Gods. I guarantee even the most hot-headed Rakasta is going to value economy over violence.
Also, they’re great hunters. Who would’ve guessed the cat people were good at hunting? But since they’ve eschewed traditional weaponry, do they hunt with their kasas? Do they stalk their prey on all fours and go for a full on sprint, only to strike at its neck and eviscerate its stomach with their back paws?
…that’s intense and makes them even more terrifying to deal with.
Again, who thinks it’s a good idea to fight these guys? At first I felt bad for them, being the under(cat)dog and getting the short end of the stick. But now I just feel sorry for any poor bloke who gets on their bad side.
Related Species:
So there are several subspecies of Rakasta, though they weren’t included in their original publication. Dragon magazine, Issue #247 instead gave a whole exposé about the Rakasta and their complicated culture and relationships among different prides. You can find it floating around the internet somewhere, which will go much more in depth than I’m going to go here. But for the sake of giving the whole picture, I’ll talk about a few noteworthy subspecies here:
Caracasta: Pariahs of Rakasta society, as they have adopted the usage of bows and arrows from the local human populations. As such, they’re looked down on by other Rakasta. They have large ears with black tufts of hair at the tips.
Cloud Pardasta: Arboreal Rakasta with innate magical abilities. They’re covered in leopard like spots and are especially proficient in leaping from treetop to treetop.
Simbasta: Essentially, lion Rakasta. They’re very proud and are the only Rakasta able of becoming Paladins. Also, insert The Lion King joke about Simba here. [Mod’s Note: HAHAHA I TOTALLY WANT LION-PALADIN-PEOPLE IN MY CAMPAIGN SETTING NOW. Even/especially if that would foster an endless amount of Thundercats references.]
Overall:
I feel like the Rakasta suffer from the same thing nearly every beast folk/monstrous humanoid race suffers from: they’re cast in a light that wants to simultaneously make them more like the other core races in terms of culture, but also keep them in the Monster Manual as something to kill and pillage the corpses of. But they’re not as bad as they could’ve been. Their culture is really interesting, albeit at some points contradictory, but I feel like that could be played up. They’re kind enough folk if you want to trade or make friends, but the moment you turn on them they strike you down hard. A culture that values strength is not inherently barbaric, and I wish that could be emphasized by exploring their religion or the significance behind the tapestries that they create. On the plus side, there was no gendered language used when talking about the Hatra or the chief, so that makes me believe that it is a very egalitarian society, which is good! Show me some badass tiger-riding female warriors that, on their down time, weave beautiful blankets and adorn their saddles with culturally significant beadwork.  You can do better in your setting. Give the Rakasta the attention and care that they deserve.
…you know, I’m glad that at no point was I given the opportunity to make a single skooma joke. Good job, AD&D.

  Dear Sir,
  A Letter of Complaints
I wish to draw your attention to some problems that we pupils of this great institution now face. In the first place, the noise that comes from the Ajibola block industry located at the back of the school is an unpleasant and disturbing. Hearing the noise when teaching is going on is enough to distract us.
We find it difficult to concentrate on our lessons when teaching is going on. One of our teachers made us to understand that the owner of the industry did not get the government's approval to locate the industry there.

  Thank you.
