I think the biggest culture shock I experienced in Finland so far is around friendships, as well as the area where I learned a lot of valuable things about myself. I might not be entirely right about this as I've only been here for a short time, but those are my main take-aways:

Trying to build real friendships takes time, much longer than in my home country. It is relatively easy to get in contact with Germans in my experience, especially if you live in a bigger city and speak the language, ESPECIALLY if you are a student and just starting out in a new phase of your life. You will naturally hang out frequently if you match well and spend a lot of time together. It might take a few meetings before people will invite u to their home, but generally there's not much distance as soon as the ice is broken.

Here I feel like people are much slower and more reluctant to open up. But that doesn't equal rejection, it's simply a slower process and you will still be able to tell the difference between being rejected and being on the path of friendship. In Germany, it's usually a lot more fast paced and there is a small window you have to catch to get into tight friendgroups. If you miss it, no chance of ever going back, vibe gone chance gone. Also people who might have found you interesting could lose interest if you wait for too long (meaning usually a month or so) to get back to them.

I actually realized that this way of socializing stresses me tf out. I much prefer a more laid back approach where you can get to know each other without time limitations (of course prerequisite is that you have the time). It is a much more sustainable, thoughtful and respectful approach to someone elses time. You're not treated as disposable, but rather as a person someone actively chooses to get to know.

Likewise, if people feel like they either do not vibe with you or if they already have a very busy social life or life in general, they will let you know and don't pretend to have time or like you. This was quite a new thing to me and felt a bit cold, but I actually really appreciate it now, as it's saving you from stressful, draining interpersonal connections. It also made me respect some people immensely, because they know their own self worth and boundaries quite well.

It made me reflect upon my tendency to be a people pleaser, and the strong yearning I have to treat my own relationships the same way as I've experienced it here. I've grown so tired of superficial connections that are placeholders for true, fulfilling friendships. I used to think being lonely was the worst thing in the world. It kind of is still awful, but what's worse is being surrounded by a bunch of people you don't really click with or can rely on, which leaves you lonely as well. I do think letting go of this is something that will slowly seep over into my own life, as it is so freeing.

I also intend on staying, or rather coming back when I've finished up all my business back in Germany (I am not really rooted to the city I live in). People who I've told about this recent development were very worried if I would be able to be happy in a country that is (generally) much more reserved when it comes to social interaction, as I need social interaction regularly. I don't really think it's that big of an issue, as I think I can balance out people's passive approach with my more active one in the beginning. I have a high social battery, so I'm fine with interacting with a few more people, before people get truly comfortable to hang out on the regular. Yet I also prefer quality interactions over a bunch of small talk meetups I don't care about. I also still have my core friends who I talk to regularly on the phone, and this has been a tradition for years already before I came here.

What I am immensely struggling with right now is trying to make sense of all the connections I made in the past 10 years. This is the 6th city I lived in the last decade, and the 8th move. All my relationships feel so spread out and scattered. I am holding on to some solely because those people were there when I moved somewhere new and I didn't have anyone else. Like back in school, when I was friends with people because they were the only ones there. It's all a bit confusing and painful right now, as my values and perspectives are changing. I think there are a lot of people moving from the friends to acquaintance category right now. I'm completely redefining friendships for me at the moment.

Embodying for Manifestation and Confidence Pt. 1

A little disclaimer again... I am in no way a professional astrology reader however I do my research and take into account my personal experience and observation... so some things may vary for others, but I hope a part of this post can also help you. To begin I want to highlight that this is focused more on our physical appearance... I will probably get into further sections over time...

We'll get into two things: Ascendant and Venus Sign As individuals, our sun, moon, and specific planets will give us our own personal fingerprint which at the end of it all will definitely be unique and different from others' experiences. So simply having the same sun or moon or rising sign will not be duplicated by others. But I want to touch more into the Ascendant and Venus sign.

The Ascendant sign (Rising Sign) is the expression to which we have become an independent existence in this world. It is also the behaviors and characteristics that enable us to cope with unfamiliar territory.

It is responsible for our self-awareness, identity, and our self-sufficiency. Furthermore, it reciprocates our goals, objectives, personal philosophy, mannerisms, physical appearance, etc. And our Ascendant is how we PROJECT ourselves to the world.

The Venus Sign is what we are attracted to in all senses. It rules... our nature of LOVE and LOVING... Our Venus sign shows us what we desire personally. It is our aesthetic. Our ALLURE. Our natural affection and beauty. At the same time, it reflects what we give importance to and how we take care of and prioritize ourselves. I believe that how we love others by nature-- is also a reflection of how we love ourselves.

HOW I USE THE ASCENDANT AND VENUS SIGN

We should understand that manifestations come at a different pace for each one of us. But the more comfortable you are and trusting with the universe, the easier you manifest. This is relational to what we want and who we want to be...

Wear materials that you can combine with your Venus and Ascendant... For example, I am a Capricorn Venus and Aries Ascendant. I like wearing Capricorn Venus-esque clothes: clothes that look smart, professional, girl-boss, mature, elegant, and timeless. However, I would choose colors that reflect the nature of my Ascendant... so powerful colors especially and specifically DEEP RED(s).

I apply the same rule to makeup and accessories!

Intuitively, our Venus is not only what we are attracted to but also how we attract things, relationships, and experiences from the universe, and our ascendant boosts our power without compromising our safety and comfort.

The only way we can ever feel confident... is when we understand ourselves and what benefits us without compromising who we truly are.

Babylon 5 S03E20 And the Rock Cried Out, No Hiding Place previous episode - table of contents

It's kinda wild how much b5 is exactly to my tastes. Take this (and many other!) episode titles for example. Pretentious? Maybe. Poetic? Certainly. Full of allusion? Definitely. Makes me get shivers? Absolutely.  They even give me things to complain about. I'm well settled into complaining loudly about Londo bullshit.

Last episode's beverage (for data point purposes) was straight tequila with pepsi chaser. The hangover was vile and I woke up in the middle of the night and couldn't sleep for three hours. Today's beverage - Bitterroot Brewing Co "Dirt Church" ipa. It's alright for an IPA.

"Z MINUS 14 DAYS"

I see we've moved several letters on from "t."

Yeah!! It's another Susan Ivanova personal log episode. The telepaths they've recruited are being dispersed. Sheridan is tired, and Franklin is still pacing the halls. 

All the telepaths are being accompanied by a single Narn bodyguard. Fingers crossed for some of those bodyguards to start developing some telepathy of their own after spending a long time in close quarters with a telepath!!

Londo thinks it's time to "take care of" G'Kar?? FUCK OFF.  He wants G'Kar tricked back to Narn and executed. Thanks to the previous flashbacks, I am well aware that this plot won't play out with G'Kar's actual death. But I still want to strangle Londo. Can I isekai into B5 just long enough to goddamn murder that man?? 

Religious Theo of the religious group whatevever is being highlighted this episode. In theory I appreciate how diverse B5 is, religiously speaking. In practice....ehhh. At least when it comes to people quoting the KJV and referring to "the lord" every other sentence. 

Sheridan does look rough. And there's Delenn!!! Pretty in pink. 

"[Ivanova] said you were carrying on cranky. I looked up cranky, it said grouchy. I looked up grouchy, it said crochetly. No wonder you have such an eccentric culture. None of your words have their own meaning!" 

LOL!! Delenn is so cute. Also, very seriously, I apologize to every person who needs to learn English as an adult. It's a mess. 

Once I saw a gif of Delenn propping herself up on a elbow in bed with Sheridan and I have been FERAL to see that scene ever since. Maybe today will be the episode? Delenn climbs in bed with Sheridan to make him sleep??

Na'Toth might be alive. Or her name might simply be a trap for G'Kar. I don't think Londo's plan is going to work out. If he didn't go back to Narn for literally every other Narnuan, I'm not sure he'd go back for his aide who is probably dead. Also I 100% have more faith in Vir than this. Idk where he got them, but he has a surprisingly well-developed set of morals and empathy. 

Vir: "I won't. I won't go. I won't do it."

VIR BABY. Just say you'll do it, then go and collude and G'Kar. Londo is unhinged, threatening to have Vir's family stripped naked and whipped through the streets of Centaur's capital. What a fuck. He ought to be directing his energies towards getting back Lord Whatshisface who killed Adira on behalf of the Shadows. Refa. The show reminds me in a timely manner. 

Speaking of Refa, he's giving very desperate vibes. Trying too hard to suck up, and that puts blood in the water for the sharks to scent!!

Well. Hopefully even if Vir gives into Londo's threat and tries to trick G'Kar, his obvious nerves give away that something's wrong. 

Back to Londo and the Centauri court shenanigans. Londo is, undeniably, good at putting on the type of political front that works well on Centaur. 

Susan's blowout is so good every day I have to assume it's part of the high-tech auto-dryer when you step out of the shower...or something. Because there's no way that SUSAN IVANOVA is spending twenty minutes every day achieving the most ideal blowout that has ever been hair-dried into existence. 

OK I like the religious cabal a bit better now that I know they're smuggling up-to-date information about Earth politics into Bably 5. 

GODDANG IT. G'Kar is trying to sneak back onto Narn. Well. At least I know he lives to die another day. 

Vir, I am disappointed in. 

Centaur attack on Vir!! He lives to become Emperor another day as well. Stakes drop considerably when you know certain characters' ultimate fates. 

You know who I'd love to see again? AUNT PROPHETESS! Majel!! 

Lord Refa's eyebrows deserve their own acting credit. 

oooh, Centauri telepathy attack!! 

Poor Vir. If only he had been able to keep his position on Minbar. He looked less stressed-out when he was spending most of his time surrounded by a tranquil environment. 

The Baptist pastor is hanging out with Sheridan, who is struggling to relax enough to fall asleep while also doing paperwork. Maybe. don't do paperwork while getting ready for bed. Which the pastor is also bringing up, more delicately than I would. 

the Pastor: DELEGATE IDIOT.

OK he can stay. He is speaking common sense. 

"When youre worry tank gets full people stop coming to you, because they don't want to add to it." 

Smart. "figure out how to relax or your people will stop reading you in in an attempt to protect you." 

"Z MINUS 13 DAYS"

Zha'ha'dum minus 13 days?? 

G'Kar made it to Narn. There's climate change from the orbital bombardment. Constant wind, particulate coming down from the upper atmosphere, poor air quality. And I doubt they had recovered from the previous Centauri occupation, and possibly not even the Shadows' occupation before that! 

Emperor Cartagia is going to be traveling to B5: that seems like a significant security risk! Maybe he'll get nerfed and we'll see the glorious ascension on Emperor Londo. 

Refa's plot is to capture G'Kar instead of letting Londo do it. Fingers crossed for neither of them getting that glory. 

Delenn says there's no pattern to the Shadows' attacks. The lack of pattern is probably the point - all over the place and unpredictable so the united forces are spread as thin and widely as possible. And the tactical data sorta supports that! They haven't attacked anything in the center of the sector, so refugees are going there. And Sheridan is picking this up now, too. They could nail all the refugees at once. 

"I think this is as much about terror as it is about territory." 

Yeah. 

Hm, Delenn is horrified by Sheridan saying he needs to think like them to beat them. Unless she has a really compelling argument against it, I'm going to have to disagree. How can you counter a tactic unless you understand it? 

Londo just knocked out a Centauri guard with a punch to rescue Vir. He gets no points from me, because he put Vir in that position. 

Unfortunately G'Kar won't get to kill Londo for quite a few years, but maybe he and the resistance will get to kill Refa and his goon squad instead. 

Damn it, Londo was two steps ahead of Refa this whole time. f.ucking annoying. Well. all Centauri warmongering genocidal politics are annoying. Refa being personally in charge of the bombardment of Narn is backfiring on his right now. 

Oh so this means that Vir was an unwitting stooge in the plot all along, and that's extra scummy, considering it resulted in Vir being mindraped and made to believe he'd just given up his mentor and employer. Very very cutthroat politics. No wonder Londo didn't name the embarassment he was planning to remove on behalf of the emperor to prove House Mollari's value. 

Baptist Pastor brought a gospel singer along with him, lol. That's very on brand. And super fucking amusing juxtaposition between her music and Refa being pursued and killed. "There's no hiding place down here." Refa being beaten to death. 

Buuuut as much as I dislike Londo, I am a fan of the person responsible for untold suffering and death getting a tiny fraction of that delivered back to them. So...annoyingly... *sigh* go Londo...

It's so fucking funny that Londo had the ability to slip refa the other half of the two-part poison all along but instead he had him beaten to death for political purposes. 

Vir is angry, but probably not enough to make him break from Londo entirely. 

Delenn has a surprise for Sheridan - "the White Star was never intended to be one of a kind, only the first..." and now there's a whole fleet. 

Hm. As far as first kisses on screen go, that one was pretty dated. I'm happy for them, but the "smear your face against the other person's face" is a style I'm glad has mostly gone away. It doesn't look very pleasant, hahah.

now don't start jumping around or being "weird" in the matrix if you're not alone. even small, hidden gestures are very valuable.

your unconscious beliefs about people could get you in trouble...but if you re alone at home, or if you can explain to the people around you something like "i'm raising my vibration", you can do the things you receive as a download from the question.

i was hospitalized 7 years ago for following "my excitement" in front of the wrong crowd, that's why i am explaining this as such. now i feel free within the societal rules, and although i can appear excentric sometimes, i am not pushing the limits that much. i am all for being ourselves, but the matrix isn't always. the more you evolve and escape it, the more freedom you get.

anyways, this game, this method, is about using your intuition and your feel good to manifest anything you want. for example, when i manifest money in this way, i feel the tendencies to rub my hands together happily, click my fingers, or open my arms to the sky and lower them slowly.

these gestures don t necessarily make sense to the viewer, but they raise my vibe immediately to the exact feeling of my desire.

now why i said to put reminders every 30 mins.... if you keep asking yourself these questions often and raising your vibe way too much, you could end up crashing to a very low level. less is more.

i often remember the questions between my reminders (2-3 times per 30 mins) and i express it, just not for the whole 30 mins continuously or the whole day. burned myself with that before. you have to download slowly and relaxedly. try to find a pace that works for u.

the reminders are only there to keep you on track, it s your job to keep being on the vibe of the desire.

everyone has their own codes, some could be okay with just the visuals, some could feel to jump around or dance. remember you can pretend to jump around laying in bed, just do the small gestures that imitate that and feel good.

i really hope this makes sense.

and of course, keep persisting!

and enjoy the present moment, the rest is living in the past or the future, which is not healthy to do all the time.

OH and im not in the toh fandom, but i did read ''The Death-Defying Flirting Methods of Captain Willow Park'' and i really really enjoyed it!! like i said, you write both angst, humor and romance so well and your writing is such a beautiful mix of everything!

i reblogged that post kind of in solidarity with other writers cause i know insecurity is something everyone deals with. it’s weird because I feel like at all times I’m simultaneously confident and insecure about my writing lol. I have enough experience/training that I know I can like put together sentences and paragraphs lol but I still fret over pacing and style and characterization and stuff like that a lot. the insecurities make me feel kind of silly bc I feel like at this point i should be over them!!! but I can’t help worrying about how my work will be received by the audience. i am always at least a little nervous to post something new, and sometimes I am very nervous! Cause I just don’t know if it’s gonna land the way I intended.

And the most frustrating part for me is when I read something REALLY good and sometimes feel like pouty and jealous I guess lol going “ugh I could never write like that! I should just give up!” I feel like such a baby!! but I get over it quickly and I’m sure I’m not the only one who falls victim to Pouty Little Binch syndrome. (I mean I hope I’m not the only one or that would be extra pitiful 😂)

Anyway it helps me to remind myself that it’s a good thing that I don’t write the same way my fav writers write! we all have our own ways of thinking and expressing ourselves, and even when we take inspiration from someone else, the Us-ness of our work is always gonna come through. If that makes sense. like if my fav writer is So-and-So, it’s really awesome and cool to enjoy the So-and-So-ness of their work and break down why I enjoy it so much and even incorporate some So-and-So-type flavors in my own writing, but at the end of the day my writing will always be full of carpisuns-ness and that’s cool too! I just think as creators we are so close to our own work and we’re so in the weeds about it that we don’t get a clear view of it like a reader does when they’re coming to it fresh, and that makes us sometimes judge it unkindly. More often than not, your work is better than you think it is. Sometimes when a creator I admire feels down about their work I just wish I could let them borrow my eyes and see it how I see it, because it’s really amazing and makes me feel so much!!

Anyway, I probably got off topic lol but I just wanted to shout out to all the writers who are feeling down about their work. You are doing amazing sweetie!! Better than you think. Dont stop writing.

Skip to Loafer Anime Episode 1, Part 1 - Thoughts and more thoughts? (Part 1/3)

WOW first of all - what an INCREDIBLE 1st episode! As someone who absolutely loves the manga, to see it in animation was something I was really looking forward to. I wouldn’t say I had high expectations, it was more so that I was simply excited to just see one of my favourite mangas be animated, but wow - honestly, I’d say rather than the anime doing the manga justice, I feel as though the anime does its own justice.

I watched the episode twice, on the surprise early livestream in the skip to loafer discord, as well as the pre-scheduled livestream, and then once more up until the halfway point to make screenshots.

My first impressions were as follows:

what studio ghibli vibes (this is a big, big compliment)

this pacing is awesome, and the anime has really awesome transitions/new perspectives that weren't in the manga

the visuals, especially the colours really stood out to me

the characters - the voice acting

the soundtracks coming in and the sound effects AHH!

but let’s take a deeper dive! with things that stuck out to me with the episode and differences between the anime and the manga that I thought were interesting!

NOTE: this does contain manga spoilers/ spoilers to episode 1 of the anime

1. Cherry blossoms and our very first visual scene

I’m going to mention cherry blossoms A LOT, because they’re also laid out throughout the whole episode. Interestingly enough, cherry blossoms are not in the first chapter itself, but they are the cover of volume 1 as well as chapter 1! I LOVE the inclusion of it. Throughout the episode it’s used often as a means to transition from one scene to another, but I think the use of it is also a standout in a certain scene (which will be mentioned later on in part 3)

How cool is it that as the anime has just released its first episode, in the SPRING season of anime, and that the sakura are in full bloom right now in Japan. (I was actually recently in Japan just this past week and Tokyo's sakura were in full bloom, which is why seeing this inclusion in the skip to loafer anime when the manga chapter didn’t have any of it, is a change I found really awesome and also personal!)

2. This shot that I am dubbing the Mitsumi dun-dun drone-shot

LOVE this pan-out of Mitsumi turning her head to make her pose on the balcony, SUPER cool shot visually, it gives me epic, it gives me life. Visually, it's just a great transition! And it's one of MANY great transitions

3. Train window reflection

In the manga, we don’t have any idea where Mitsumi is having these thoughts as she thinks about her friends and her hometown, but in the anime as she says "Growing up with my best friend, how cool is that" and is looking at the panda pin, we see that it’s while she’s on her train to Tokyo, which is different from the manga and is very cool - and...

... this then transitions gorgeously into this

4. Our first Magical Cherry Blossom Transition

With the petals blowing with the background of Mitsumi’s hometown, then focusing on a single petal (which, hmmm might be a symbol for Mitsumi? ) and then we see our petal-Mitsumi fly into a background of Tokyo

Sidenote: I saw this white car moving and was like huh? I’m 99% sure it’s the car Mitsumi’s friends used to drive to the station so they could see Mitsumi off! It's something SO small, but i thought it was lovely to see their car drive away, the last bit of Mitsumi's hometown going, and then seeing the gust of cherry blossoms transition into a single one and then we’re in Tokyo

5. Getting ready (well, most of them)

Quaking and shaking.  Here we are with some lovely getting ready shots of some of the significant characters at this point early on in the story. I think a lot of us manga-readers were absolutely pleasantly surprised by these shots! Our faves in action!!!

Third, Mika??? I zoomed ahead later on in the episode since this person had their nails painted and I wanted to see if Mika did in the shot of hers when she first talks to Mitsumi. Alas, no nails done, and honestly though I would think that having one character constantly have painted nails for everything would be a lot of work. Painted nails does seem very Mika to me though!!! I just want confirmation on who this is haha!

Fourth, Kinomoto? Was honestly surprised to see her included if this is who it is! I'd assume though, given the short hair, and the twirl does say Kinomoto to me!

Fifth, Makoto

Sixth, Yamada

Seventh……..SHIMA

VERY FUN that our intro to him is so contrary, not only in action of not getting ready as we see the different characters do in the previous shots, but also!! the colour schemes is pretty much in dark whereas everyone else is in bright light

Eighth!!!!!! Last but certainly not least: MITSUMI-CHAN (and the panda-pin I mean how cute is that!)

ALSO "Kanpeki"

C’mon, that attitude in the “Perfect." This little self-comment is another anime addition that is just so tasty!

Was listening to Goodbye by Bo Burnham, and it kinda gave me B-52 vibes, especially at the lines "So this is how it ends // I promise to never go outside again" Maybe finally agreeing with what everyone says about him being a machine, a device whose only power is to kill. The calm pace continues until "Am I going crazy? // Would I even know? // Am I right back where I started fourteen years ago?" Has he really come nowhere at all? Is he still the monster that he was at the start?

The rushed words and 'excuses' continue to the "I swear to God that all I've ever wanted was // A little bit of everything, all of the time // A bit of everything, all of the time // Apathy's a tragedy, and boredom is a crime" and then, it's extremely interesting at how it doesn't return to 'anything and everything, all of the time' like it does in 'Welcome to the Internet'. Instead the line is "I'm finished playing, and I'm staying inside" So he's given up on trying to be a human. He's realised that he'll only be a monster who will follow orders until he dies, so it'd be safer if he just hides away.

He's comfortable with his decision, tries to lighten the mood, until the line "Oh, shit, you're really joking at a time like this?" This is the point that means the most to him. He's completely lost control, and the chorus from Look Who's Inside Again returns, but this time, something is clearly different. The tone is distorted, almost like it's coming from a MACHINE and not his own voice.

In my mind, I'm thinking of a moment where he's with Brownie, where Brownie is trying to convince him that everything is fine, that he's not some monster, only for B-52 to make one comment about himself, whether it being that he's evil, or that he'll hurt Brownie, and in that moment of weakness, something takes over him. Maybe someone orders him to kill Brownie, or they do it simply by overriding his systems. The moment his voice goes from sad and defeated to empty and corrupted, only for the mechanical smile to fade, for him to come back to himself as soon as he sees the light leave Brownie's eyes, the soft whisper of 'It's not your fault...' being the last thing he'll ever say again.

Ough good question… but I don't think I have any fun answers for any of my current fics. I wish I were clever enough to insert easter eggs into my writing, but my brain partitions fandom content into specific little boxes that don’t have much interaction between each other

I DO have one Liufang fic that will probably remain unpublished where Sun Jing and Qiu Tong from Tamen de Gushi (她们的故事) have cameos as Bai Zhan and Qian Cao disciples! 

45. What’s something you’ve improved on since you started writing fic?

This is going to sound very funny, but. I have gotten better about sharing my writing lol. Not at autorial things that actually matter, like pacing, or analysis, or rising falling action whatever! I have gotten better at sharing my writing :) 

I write a LOT and I share very little. Mostly because I write solely for an audience of one (1) (me). Most of what I’ve written has never been read by anyone besides me, and probably won’t ever have any kind of audience except for me. And I’m totally okay with that!

The more I feel like I need to make my own food, the more I tend to write (by god ES21 i am looking at you with wet and pathetic eyes…) and I only publish if I feel like i have something good to contribute. I suffer from an overbearing need for perfection (self-perceived) so if it doesn’t pass my own vibe check/exactingly high standards, I won’t publish it. This means that there are tons of shorter minifics, character interactions, drabbles, AUs etc that simply languish in my docs bc I guess my internal metric for ‘contributes to fandom’ is longfic. I got a little better at sharing my writing with Moshang, mostly because I liked what I had written so much and at the time, it didn’t feel like anyone had done exactly what I wanted to see. Haha perhaps it was only my ego that got bigger, and not my writing skills? :')

ANYWAYS. I would like to try and use my brain more when engaging with things and creating instead of just devouring something and then smashing whatever is in my brains directly onto a doc and being like OOOO WOW!!!! COOL FIC!! I LOVE IT!! MWAH (all themes, motifs, and analysis fly directly over my head and escape like a flock of birds) but also my brainspace is so small and crammed so full of whatever the OTP of the era is that it’s quite difficult for me :’)

46. Do you prefer writing on your phone or on a computer (or something else)? Do you think where you write affects the way you write?

I write almost exclusively on my phone lmao. Lying in bed in the dark, on my phone, on gdocs! 

I edit exclusively on the computer, so any writing that needs to be added at this stage is on the laptop. This is the most grueling part of writing for me and makes me gnash my teeth so much. Editing is so hard and so time consuming and spurs the perfectionist in me like someone kicking a horse into gallop lmao.  

If i didn't write on my phone, i wouldn’t get any writing done, I think. This is also part of why chapter updates take so long. Always bottlenecked at the editing point!

I wanted to get into the spooky season, so these are the books that I read in October.

The End of Alice by A.M. Homes

This book was on my tbr for quite a while and I finally decided to pick it up, because the blurb sounded fitting to get into the spooky vibes. And oh boy. OH BOY. I felt so disgusted while reading The End of Alice. Really, really disgusted. Reading through the thought process of Chappy, the main character sitting in jail, is a page turner. His reflections of the mails that he gets from a 19 year old girl, the child memories that he shares with us or when he simply lives through another day in jail. And then every once in a while he brings up this super gross things, that I had to read multiple times (which was a mistake) because I couldn’t believe what I just read. It’s weird to say that I like this book, I know that, but it’s the same as when I tell people that I like Lolita by Nabokov: it is more about the writing skills of the author. Nabokov and Homes are talented writers who are able to create an atmosphere that awakens a strong feeling of disgust in someone. Yet Homes adds an unreliable narrator who lets the reader wondering if it is ok to feel sorry for Chappy or if we should feel sorry to over look the elephant in the room. In all I’d say that this is perfect to get into the spooky vibes because it will make you uncomfortable in your own skin.

The Eyes are the best Part by Monika Kim

It was ok. Imo the fast paced writing isn’t really fitting the story, because there are so many topics brushed on, but not really explored. A slow paced writing would have changed that. It is still a nice read, especially the ending. So, I’d say it’s beginner friendly if you are new to the horror genre and want to tip ur toes into it.

American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis

After reading the first pages my thouht was “This is the Barbie Movie for men”. Unfortunately most men don’t get the message. “Bateman is such a cool dude”. I get it, u also want to have a lot of money and a job which no one really knows what u r actually doing in.

Anyway, the writing was amazing, yet after the first 40 pages there wasn’t really a reason for me to keep reading, because I already got the main message. I only finished the book, because 1) I wanted to study the writing more and 2) I wanted to know if there will be a moral. There is a lot to take out of the story though it was published 30 years ago. 4 stars.

Was du nicht siehst by Franziska Elea

An autobigraphy about borderline. I really enjoyed how the author captured the thought process of a borderliner as well as how their feelings differ from a “normal” person. Towards the end Elea got way into depth about becoming a blogger and influencer. I get that she found a new sens in her life, but, imo, she just got way into detail. Like, how she found out that she can also take money for advertising products, how she gained her followers, etc. 4 star

Nineteen Claws and a Black Bird: Stories by Agustina Bazterrica

I picked this book up because I 1) wanted a quick read and 2) have “Tender is Flesh” on my tbr. I had high hopes for this esecially with all the praises at the beginning of the book. Some pages in I realized it is ok. I had the same feeling when I read E.A. Poe's short stories collection: I can see why people enjoy it, but as for me the stories are too short for what reason I couldn't get the horror vibes. Most of the stories gave me more of a “weird fiction” vibe. In all 2.75 stars.

Quick thought on the stuckness of culture that is probably not particularly novel but w/e: it’s not that we don’t have enough weird new stuff. We have weird stuff, tons of experimental artists, on the internet and irl. However everything is so scattered that none of it makes a or leaves an impression: I’m remembering how all Trump’s scandals that came to light during the 2016 election were so numerous that none really stuck, whereas the “But her emails/benghazi!” narrative was repeated so frequently that it just became the main anti-Hillary talking point. Trump’s critics couldn’t hammer down a single worst thing about him.

Similarly culture is so fragmented and fast-paced that nothing is sticking. There have been a couple shows that have made a splash, but I don’t see people really discussing them in the mainstream. I remember Gawker and Jezebel, for example, had a consistent tone and editorial oversight. I also kind of think that early breadtube had this sort of effect: a few content creators who spoke the same “language” and collaborated.

I consumed this content when I was younger. I have to wonder how many readers of the blogs I followed were older than late 20s—have I simply aged out of the zeitgeist? Very possible. The cultural conversation seems to have moved to tiktok, which I cannot watch without feeling kind of motion sick—It’s overstimulating I think (no wonder everyone thinks they have autism these days—we did not evolve for shortform video)

You know what I actually think the problem was? The comments section on mainstream blogs used to be worth reading. Those who wanted to add their two cents—generating free content for the website in question while still getting their voice across but remaining somewhat anonymous—all now think they’re worthy of their own Substack publication that maybe two people will read but no one will comment on—at best, they’ll use their response to form their own post on their own blog, stretching out a paragraph’s worth of vibes-based analysis into maybe five. WHO ARE ALL THESE BLOGS FOR???

Like I’m enjoying tumblr because it’s shitpost central. Fuck editing. Fuck dressing up my hot takes as important commentary. Its entertainment! It’s less than entertainment! It’s a form of socializing! I am not a journalist! I want to pretend that my imaginary friends are reading this and nodding along or maybe disagreeing—upvoting or downvoting, in essence—developing their own opinions that maybe they’ll reply with—isn’t that the point of yapping about culture? Any actual scholarship has to be conducted retrospectively, right?

Okay so I know this is my self-labeled TLT side blog, but I recently read this lovely novella and it’s sapphic and I just ate a brownie and it gave me a headache (is this what getting old is? desserts triggering migraines? woof) so you’ll have to indulge me as I stretch my book recommendation muscles.

Ugh, I hate summarizing plots though! Always have, ever since book report days…but I’ll try. Pleiti is a scholar at a university on Jupiter, where humanity has moved after they destroyed Earth, studying the interwoven ecosystems of old Earth in hopes of humanity someday restoring their home planet and returning there. Mossa, an ex-girlfriend of hers from university days, is an Investigator who returns to their university city to enlist her help in investigating a man’s disappearance.

Here’s how I described it to my friend: I am not sure I would label it as a cozy mystery as it has been marketed, but it is definitely not a stressful thriller type murder mystery. The pace is slow and steadier, and the relationship between the two leads is the beating heart of it, and there's some climate apocalypse stuff that is definitely thought-provoking without sending me into an anxiety spiral. Holmes and Watson vibes, if Holmes and Watson were better and more interesting people, and the queer subtext was just plain text. The romance is understated but pitch perfect.

Really though, tonight I am here to talk to you about Pleiti. Pleiti, my whole heart 😭 Most of the novella is her first person narration, and the way her feelings towards Mossa are shown, and the background of their failed past relationship trickles out, and how it affects her perceptions of the present, and her just the very slightest unreliable narration of her own feelings (hello, Gideon Nav)—it is just so damn good. The empathy I felt for this woman, Pleiti who anticipates needs and remembers personal preferences and trivial details about another, even years later, who takes this information into account to accommodate and make them comfortable—the quiet, sharp sting of not receiving similar consideration from the other person, of it seemingly not even crossing their mind or awareness. Even when you know it is simply who they are, but damn if it doesn’t hurt anyway. God, but I FELT it. And it’s not that Mossa just isn’t a details person—she’s a fucking Investigator, for god’s sake! This is all about Pleiti’s perception of things, though, and to Pleiti’s eye, that sense for detail just simply isn’t turned to her.

Obviously, Pleiti is not the most neutral and unbiased party to see the situation fully clearly. Seeing her internally discount and dismiss everything Mossa does or says that basically shouts “yes Pleiti, I am still in love with you” due to this perspective she has that is informed by their past—IT HURTS SO GOOD. And seeing Pleiti work through it, both of them honestly, as they reconnect and go through the awkward early moments before quickly fitting together again like two complementary puzzle pieces, and her REALIZING that they are actually two complementary souls—aw man, it’s just so good. A story about being able to be loved for who you are, as you are, even as, or maybe because, you change and grow.

THEY LITERALLY GO OUT TO EAT AT A RESTAURANT CALLED SLOW BURN. (And it sounded like a dope restaurant!)

The titular line in the book, how it parallels both the earth ecosystems plot and their relationship—chef’s kiss. The whole book I had been wondering about the title, and it was so incredibly satisfying for that little reveal.

One of my favorite lines, Pleiti to Mossa: “I don’t care how smart you are, I’m not stupid.” (Context is probably important here, but it’s a winner!)

A slim 166 pages, definitely recommend. It stands perfectly well on its own, but I am hoping for more! Hmm I wonder if there’s fanfic for it yet

I find it a bit hard to explain the way I write pairings. I’m uncomfortable writing explicitly romantic or sexual things. I’m aroace, so it just doesn’t come naturally to me. (It’s important to me that you guys know I’m not shaming that in any way, this is simply a choice for what I am comfortable writing)

That being said, I do write physical affection and close relationships. Could be platonic, familial, or queer platonic relationships. I hope this makes sense, idk why but I feel a need to explain myself lol.

My fics may be interpreted as romantic, but for requests I won’t intentionally write romance. So things like marriage, pregnancy, etc are just not my vibe for my personal writing.

Okay, my thoughts are as follows. (And these are all assuming the teamwork is 1-on-1, and also I did not think any of it through.)

I feel like Sokka would have the easiest time momentarily putting personal grudges aside on the basis of strategy. He would not be friendly, but he would talk through the plan without losing focus, keep a generally calm/light tone, and honestly he and Azula would probably have a mutual respect thing going on if they talk to each other long enough, because they are both huge assets to each other when on the same side. Unfortunately, this means that Azula would spend the whole time going, "Okay, as soon as his role in helping me through this is over, I've got to kill him; he's very good at what he does, and this is the best opportunity to remove him from my plate of adversaries." But Sokka probably knows this. Also, maybe enemies to lovers. What the hey.

Azula and Aang are two gifted kids who are at vastly different places in the gifted kid burnout journey and also with vastly different baggage about their own skills. After it's understood that they need to work together and Aang does that doe-eyed frowny face for whenever he's dealing with a serious enemy in close quarters, Aang will be floating around effortlessly, and Azula will hold herself to such high standards for keeping up with him. Like, normally Aang will drift ahead of his friends, and they either let it happen or ask him to slow down, but Azula takes it as an implicit challenge and goes out of her way to keep pace with him and not show that it's a strain to do that. (I don't necessarily mean the literal walking speed would be the point of contention; my main point is that there would be some area where Azula feels she needs to best or match him unnecessarily. Usually, she's great at teamwork and letting other people use their unique skills, but Aang's particular effortless vibe would be different because he doesn't acknowledge her as his superior like Ty Lee always makes a point of doing.) Until it reaches a point where Aang does that face of concern and slight confusion and says, "Azula, you're exhausted. Why don't we take a rest?" What I'm saying is, if this cooperation goes on for a significant length of time, it would turn into Aang cheerfully going "You know, it doesn't have to be perfect. You've been a big help anyway!" while flying circles around Azula and lowkey infuriating her. And she would have to bring him down to her level by subtly probing at old wounds. So, placing the two of them together would be the gifted kid burnout speedrun for both.

I'd say Suki would be hostile and uncooperative on the basis of the entire kidnapping and identity theft situation, but she got along with Zuko easily in the Boiling Rock, so clearly she can get over extreme slights for the sake of the mission. She's a professional. It would be a tense and unpleasant working environment, but they would get it done with unprecedented amounts of romantic tension that would not bear any fruit.

I feel like Toph would refuse to admit she even needs Azula's help. Like, I understand the constraints of the question, but I feel like in this situation Toph would just be like "I can do it by myself," for a while, and Azula would have to put on a persona that is easier to get along with just to gain access to Toph as a resource. Even so, Toph would do her part of things (whatever the plan of action/attack is) with an attitude of "I'm doing this for me, and I'm not relying on you to do your part; you're just doing that for you."

Katara's temper and Azula's needling would be a joy to watch in action. It would turn into flirting, they would be bickering full-time, and I would enjoy it tremendously.

(I need to be careful, because I am perpetually on the verge of writing a fanfiction where Azula is yandere for one of the Water Tribe siblings, and I simply should not.)

(Zuko isn't here, since Azula's relationship with him is a whole other mess).

Okay so, now that the EN translation's been out for a while, what are some things you like and dislike about it?

In general, the EN localization isn't bad at all! I see that the team does put care into the way they translate the character writing: what words should they use for translating someone's dialogue, what phrasing can they go with, etc. There are grammatical errors, sure, but what game doesn't have grammatical errors? XD It's clear that they are treating this seriously, and especially compared to some of the things I hear about Enstars' localization, I'm like, "Yeah. We got off really well."

I'm pretty content with how the Octavinelle trio is localized. Their writing is handled well. I really love how they write Azul's dialogue! He's a mix of brilliant and comedic, and I live for it. Jade and Floyd are also good. I like the way they capture Floyd's spontaneity. I like that they captured the "textbook spirit" (idk how else to word it) that Jade's dialogue tends to have. Honestly, as long as they don't totally fuck up Octavinelle, I won't be totally pissed off.

I also like some of the translated titles/event names! The Phantom Bride as the EN name for Ghost Marriage is absolutely gorgeous, and it manages to capture this whimsical Disney vibe in just 3 words. The 'Mean Bean Machine' is a title you earn from completing the first Beans Day event, and that has to be the cutest fucking thing on earth.

By no means am I saying that the localization is perfect, however. There are still terms that I dislike or prefer to not use simply because I don't understand the need to change them. I will still use dorm leader over housewarden, unique magic over signature spell, magical shift over spelldrive, magical wheel over blastcycle. I'm a JP player, so the habit will be difficult to break, and I do expect for a lot of players to have an awareness of the JP terms, especially on this blog. 😅

I will say that most of my issues with TWST EN are centered around how they localize certain terms for Jamil. 🤡 I'm Filipino and not Arabic or Indian or African, so I acknowledge that I don't really have much of a say in this. But I heard people from those nations/cultures reacting to Jamil's UM being Snake Charmer and Rook's nickname for Jamil being Monsieur Pyramide. 😭 And they dislike it for the reason that it's orientalist or that it's disrespectful. It's so weird that they'd take out Sam's bones but pull this shit off with Jamil. Rook's nickname for Jamil especially ticks me off because not even thinking of the connotations, how does a pyramid even describe Jamil? At least Monsieur Multi can let you infer on Jamil's talents, but why pyramid? To say Jamil's talent is great or something? That he's some complicated maze or something? 🤨

This is a small thing, but I also am miffed that Absolutely Beautiful was commissioned in the EN version, where in the JP version, it was written by Vil. Vil is known to work very hard for himself and his career. He knows that this is an event that people around the world will watch, and he also knows that Neige is going to compete against him. In one sentence, TWST EN just... undermined Vil's character. 🤡 Like damn, chapter 5 already kinda sucked in its execution, at least keep the part about Vil writing his own song.

In general, I do find that there are inconsistencies with the writing. You can identify which stories got the good writers and which stories got writers that decided to go fuck it with the canon lore. In the kind of format that TWST is, the inconsistency is a bit glaring. But it isn't a big enough issue, unless it's mistakes like Ruggie being Savanaclaw's vice dorm leader.

Lastly, although this isn't a problem with the translation anymore, I do get concerned about the pacing of events. I'm not personally too bothered because my main account will always be the JP version, but hearing people panic or complain about the pacing of the events is very worrisome. The intent for fast paced events is to incentivize more players to spend, and I also understand that if the content is there, why be as slow as JP? But honestly, this is also one very good way to lose players. 🧍 TWST EN has to be really careful because it's already harder to make money with mobile games in the west than in Japan due to cultural differences. They can't scare off their players.

So yes, there are good things about the localization, there are things that can be improved. Overall, TWST EN is being done with care, and I think that's what really matters. As long as they are also listening to feedback, then it's going to go well.
