I get why “everyone is a little [ND neurotype here]” is frustrating when it gets used to trivialize the marginalization that ND people face, but the idea that everyone falls somewhere along the spectrum of traits that make up these neurotypes (which is what people mean when they say it) is true, & i think we lose something when we write this idea off completely bc we’ve dealt with NTs misusing it

like, we know from a neurological standpoint that “neurotypical” & “neurodivergent” & any given ND identity are not inherent, objective, immutable categories that physically exist on their own. yes, the neurological makeup of our brains (which we have come up with these words to describe), those are a physical fact, but the categories themselves—where we say “on one side of this line you are ‘typical’ and on the other side you are ‘divergent’”—that is a social construct. what we are actually describing with these labels are different clusters of traits, none of which are strictly binary, and all of which everyone does fall somewhere along the spectrum of.

“everyone is a little autistic” may not be true in the sense that not everyone meets the diagnostic criteria of autism or is meaningfully disabled by the traits they do have, but what is meant by it—that a lot of people who do not have autism per se still do have some degree of some of the traits present in autism—is true, and I think it’s an important thing for us to recognize that & not kneejerk react to & dismiss it entirely.

The “average person” isn’t strictly real. The archetypal Neurotypical™️ does not exist as a physical person. No matter what the standard is, everyone diverges from it to some degree or another. So yes, “everyone is a little neurodivergent”.

i get the usefulness of labels, i get feeling protective of them, and i get why this phrase may rub some ND people the wrong way, but this understanding of neurological makeup—as something that universally exists on a spectrum where everyone is a little of everything and we recognize that the dividing lines are made up and just a matter of degrees—is a way more accurate way of thinking about neurology than the binary “you either are [label] or not [label]” way of thinking about it, so I think our time would be far better spent saying “yes and” to NTs when they say this than throwing it out entirely bc they misunderstand the implications of what they’re saying
