It started when Midoriya roped him into a charity event where they both grew their hair out

The results nearly leveled Japan

Shouto got his mother's hair genes: very fine and pin-straight, but also very thick. He looks positively regal

He started defaulting to a low braid because it was easiest to learn and also best for keeping it out of the way during long missions

When it came time to finally cut it there was a national uproar and even counter-fundraisers to prevent it

Ultimately though, you were the reason he kept it

It seemed like you were always playing with his hair now, absent-mindedly running your fingers through, twisting red and white strands together before carefully separating them again

Despite your insistence that you liked his hair at any length (and you truly did), he couldn't miss how often your hands found their way to the crown of his head now

He also saw the way your eyes lit up when he asked for help trying a new type of braid or up-do, or when he agreed to let you try out a tutorial you found online

The casual intimacy of it all is so important to him. It makes him feel loved and cherished and more connected to you, and he wouldn't trade that for anything.

So he keeps his hair long.

(And if it also makes him feel closer to his mother and upsets his father? Well then, all the better.)
