Until Dawn Fic Recs

This was supposed to be a simple fic rec list for @gloriousdarkangelsworld who just got into the UD fandom (welcome! :D) but I got carried away and it turned out to be longer than I expected. I figured I should share these with everyone? In case some of you are looking for something to read while you’re stuck at home or just want to escape the global crisis for a while. To the surprise of no one, these are mostly Josh/Sam because I am complete and utter trash for them.

I love this fic. I love it, I love it, I love it. It’s a character study of Josh, Chris, Ashley and Sam, spanning from the night the twins went missing, to the aftermath a year later. I sound like a broken record by now but if you’re an Until Dawn fan and haven’t read this then you’re seriously missing out. It’s so well written, the characterization is perfect, the dialogue is fantastic! It’s one of my favorite fics out there and much better than books I have actually paid for. I strongly recommend checking out Queenie’s blog and ao3 page for more Until Dawn stories! She has an awesome ghost hunting AU and a bunch of cute Chris/Ashley and Sam/Josh fics 💕

i may be answering this more like a writer than a reader, since i can certainly read both, but secretly dating is so much easier to write XD;;;; fake dating scenarios are super fun but I can get impatient reading them (probably because they’re often slow-burny). secret dating also usually provides me more smutty scenarios. >>;;

yikes okay i swear i’m not being lazy; this one is REALLY hard. i’m a big fan of both fill-ins and complete rewrites. they both have juicy, delicious centers. i am always in the mood for either of them. please, feed me.

Alternate universe or future fic?

as much as i like certain aus, i am probably always going to ultimately prefer a real canon-y feel to the stories i both read and write. a future fic makes the characters feel truly alive when the canon has decided it’s done with them. every fandom is different, but with persona 4 especially, I think future fics satisfy a very big craving, since the main game leaves off after 1 year (and a summer vacation if you’ve played golden), and the only thought in your head after you’ve completed the game is “??? I WANT TO SEE ALL MY FRIENDS AGAIN!! ATLUS DON’T DO THIS!!!”

i wish there was an option for college romance since those are usually more my interest, but high school romance is a fine default between the two. when i think “middle-aged romance” i generally think of 40-50′s and that’s a No from me for yu and yosuke. i prefer to stick to their initial romance in high school/college and the oldest i like to get is maybe in their mid-30′s.  

Time travel or isolated together?

HELLO stuck in a room alone together breathing the same air having long discussions telling each other secrets they never thought they’d share kissing when the tension grows so thick that they can’t stand it how does time travel even stand a chance???

10. How would you describe your writing process?

Ha ha ha, “chaotic at best.” When I get an idea for a fic, I can usually belt out the first chapter, easy peasy, and I do. I will usually make an extremely half-assed, aspirational “outline” that is not particularly helpful. I will write as far as I can linearly, and once I get stuck, I write whatever it is I feel like writing, which is usually the “big scenes” of the fic. I do not feel guilty about this, because I feel like those are the scenes that people read the fic for in the first place, and it’s perfectly legit to sort of build your whole story around them. I do try to write them in “order” in the story. Once I get through that first run-thru, any time I sit down to write, I write the thing I want to write the most. When I get close enough to done, I will sit down and force myself to write the glue that turns my disconnected scenes into a narrative. I only send stuff to my beta in chronological order, so if I want to send her ch 3, I gotta finish ch 2 first, which is a strong motivator. At some point, I will have a panic attack and start rolling around on the floor. I will go back to the outline and turn it into an “as-built”, where I describe all the scenes I have written, break it up into chapters with page counts, etc. This really helps me to see where I need an extra scene with a certain character, how to keep the pacing correct, how to sprinkle in stuff like flashbacks. When I am close enough to done, I can go really head’s down and write all the scenes I don’t care about because I love finishing things. I usually do not post a story until the entire thing is done. I re-read and edit my stories constantly throughout this process, so the “big scenes” have probably been combed over hundreds of times.

This is no way to live, do not be like me.

I am trying really hard with my current story, a little in love now and then, to outline and try to write it in order. The best I’ve been able to do is to not move on to the next act. I am a disaster.

20. Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)

Uh, I guess the most obvious meta to talk about would be the Zabimaru - Sode no Shirayuki thing that sort of threads throughout my Heart is a Muscle series, except I don’t know what to say about it. 😂 I mean, I know what’s going on, it was one of the earliest things I’ve decided about the series, and I’ve almost just come out with it a few times, and then backed off again. I am not sure how I am ever going to explain it, to be honest, because I’m worried it’s gonna come out stupid, but maybe it’s really obvious, I dunno. This was not an answer.

I am belated extremely proud of how deftly I wove the Rikichi/Hanatarou romance (with an entire side of Rikichi-coming-to-terms-that-it’s-never-gonna-happen-with-Renji) into the undercurrents of Call Me Back When the War is Over. It’s got a lot of stuff that is really only evident upon re-read, but there’s a whole-ass love story going on, starting during Between Tides, which is essentially a timeskip for Renji and Rukia.

Ch 1: Rikichi tells Renji he has “been learning kaido.”

Ch 2: Renji asks Rikichi to distract him while he’s cooking. “He told me this really long rambling story about going to a poetry reading? With Hanatarou? It was very distracting, that was for damn sure.”

Ch 4: At Poetry Night, Renji comments that Rikichi always writes poems about oak trees. Shortly thereafter, Byakuya observes that Rikichi switched over to poems about willows for a while (which obviously happened during Between Tides, since Renji didn’t know about it), but now he writes poems about oaks and willows.  Renji and Byakuya can both tell this a metaphor, but can’t figure out what it means. If this isn’t heavy-handed enough for you, Momo has compared Renji to an oak tree in both Hold On, Hold On AND A Supposedly Fun Thing We’ll Never Do Again (which are not even in this series, although Hold On, Hold On kinda sorta is). Poetry Night was a real rich tapestry, for what started off as essentially a shitpost scene.

Ch 5: Hanatarou admits that he and Rikichi started hanging out during the timeskip. Rukia: Are you trying to hit that? Hanatarou: ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Ch 10: Hanatarou gives Rukia what-for after she knocks Rikichi out with her reiatsu, implying there was an entire hurt-comfort scene.

Ch 12: Hanatarou and Rikichi are now dating.

This is the sort of thing you can pull off when you write your stories completely out of order, like a madwoman.

He realizes that this is her, trying to show up in a physical form, step out of the phone.

He doesn’t know where to look, but then his confusion wanes when a butterfly shows up, fluttering towards him. It lands near his phone, skitters a bit, flaps its wings.

“Lucy?” he asks, transfixed on the butterfly. Its orange wings are bright under the sunlight.

I THOUGHT I’D TRY SMALL, FOR MY FIRST TRIAL.

“Well, you certainly nailed it.” He smiled warmly at the butterfly, and he had the crazy notion that it smiled back at him.

Yeah, probably The Policeman lmao, I remember it today n I cringe a little at the very obvious refs to other fandoms I made. Despite that, it continues being one of my best hits!

Chancy_Lurking ( @lurkerviolin​ ) is one of my faves, n we’ve become friends, n their Felix+ Sense8 series is the reason for it all, and u know it’s good if it managed to make a friendship that’s last its good while, and also they’re so nice, and we vibe so well!!! thegoatz ( @daniel-bryan​ ) is also now one of my bestest friends ever, and I wuv him so much, he is such a good kid, n he’s so enthusiastic about writing, and I hope that spark never goes out!!! Gonna be real w u, the best comments I’ve gotten have mainly been from my friends, who either write a paragraph or two going into detail of the fic, or just send a one sentence comment that’s just “screams!” I’ve gotten very few paragraphs from other people, n they’re always so!!!

39. Do you ever get rude reviews and how do you deal with them?

The perks of being a rarepair writer is that the only people who read my fics are the ones actively looking for content!!! And they can’t complain about my work because No One Else Is Writing For It!!!!!!

For the TPTH Fic Club this month we read @scarletraven1001‘s Retribution. I have done a down and dirty review a while back when I did mini reviews of all the fics for the VBO Big Bang, but lets dig a little deeper, thoughts below the cut!

So first and foremost lets talk about what Scarlet does really really well. She is masterful at creating believable characterizations. And something that I have noticed is even though they all have the same canon/fanon feel as you would think they should in a canon or canon divergence fic, she takes those building blocks of personality traits and elaborates on them to fit her specific story. Sometimes Goku is a sweet, lovable clown, and other times he is almost the rock for Vegeta. Its a real special gift Scarlet has for this. Also, very rarely does she fall into the trap many of us fanfic writers do of making one dimensional characters. 

Also she comes up with the most interesting ways to incorporate winks and nods to canon in an alternate universe. They are hardly ever blatant and sometimes you really have to know what you are looking for to catch them, but there are always really great references to canon in her works. Besides Vegeta being blown up (poor ‘geets), which is another fantastic wink at the readers, I really loved the inclusion of Vegeta’s space pod as a toy he used to play with. And the fact that it changed hands, and even became a mini plot point later in the fic was special. I hope it comes back in part two, cause I want to keep seeing this little space farers journey.  

So I mentioned in my original review that it reminds me of Oceans 11 movies with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, with a character having a specialized role within the unit. When 18 leaves the group, it makes me wonder who is gonna fill her spot. She's the getaway driver, and as far as I know no one else is really good at that. We see Piccolo driving at the end but he ends up having to ditch the car. I feel like the character 18 is one that would have figured out how to not ditch the car, so I wonder how her absence is gonna affect later plot points. I would also like to see what her Krillin is like... so hopefully he makes an appearance later too when the action gets pumped up in part two. 

Really book one of Retribution feels more like the first act of a play. We know what the problems in the story are, we have been introduced to the world, and the characters, and even have had the first mini climax  ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° The romantic subplot is on point. They quickly fall in love, but the relationship is deep seated in childhood friendship. It is also hinted at physical attraction from the beginning of the story, so it doesn’t feel like insta-love. I don't think I need to mention how nicely Scarlet writes smut, but just incase someone out there doesn’t know, her smut is fantastic. It’s both erotic AND romantic, which I gotta admit is not something you see often. Smut is either romantic, or its panty soaking in a lot of fics, but with her smut it’s BOTH. 

I am so disappointed in how this ends. It is truly a cliffhanger of epic proportions. Bulma is lost to Vegeta, and Raditz is also gone (although I do have questions about this asshole in the guard house.....) and the WAIT FOR BOOK TWO!!! It is painful. Honestly though, this is my favorite story she has written, and I gotta say coming from the writer of Insurrection, Linked, and The Final Price (all great fics, click those links and read them if you haven't already read them) I came into this story with expectations. I really and truly hope that part two lives up to my expectations. Part one has really set up a wonderful premise that is right up my alley (much lighter in tone than some of the other stuff I rave about so if y'all are worried about that its not dark and heavy) and has romance, intrigue, enough plot to hold up under scrutiny and great characterizations. 

I am honestly amazed about what Scarlet was able to do in the first part, cause for all intents and purposes it happens in one freaking location. Bulma is stuck in a freaking house the entire time (except for the last chapter but I digress) and it doesn’t feel like the story stands still during this time honestly. There is action, the dialogue is nice, the characters interact in fun ways... I told her I wished she had made chiaotzu a dog, cause he doesnt do much more than guard Bulma, but maybe he will have a purpose in the second part?! 

It is really a fantastic piece. It is only HALF a story and I still think it is just fantastically written and the set up is really well done, so I know that when she starts writing part two it should flow really well. This is a story that you should 100 percent read. If you wanna wait until part two comes out, I honestly can't fault you for that, but I will tell you that the best way to get an author to update something is to go to their page and tell them how much you love what they have done in the comments. So if you want more of Retribution (or any of her other fics) you should go and comment on something you loved, so they know that they are reaching someone in this void called the internet. 

On that note, I messaged her the other day after the TPTH fic club discussion and told her how much I personally loved this fic and asked what her time table for dropping the first chapter of part two. She is wanting to finish Obsidian and update Insurrection before starting book two. She says she is already deep in the draft processes of the first bit so we shouldn't have to wait too long!

A/N: I told the SasuHina fandom that if given prompts, I would write new content for them, and an anon (who didn't come off anon so I could properly credit them) recommended a SasuHina one night stand, but being who I am, I couldn't just leave it at that, so I went all out and this is probably gonna be a SHORT multi Chapter fic

And with it came life

Chirping outside the ajar window, cracked open curtains spilling daylight into the room, caressing every inch it found, from the cool wooden floors, to the mute colored walls, following onto to the bed, touching his sleeping form

A touch of sun against slightly flushed cheeks, still holding a drop of pink on otherwise ghostly pale skin, marking the morning after of a night out drinking

Slowly, he stirred awake, only to be greeted with a pounding headache so intense, he winced, covering his forehead with the palm of his hand as he opened his eyes

What the hell happened last night...? He thought to himself, squinting at the brightness in the room as he sat up, taking in his surroundings, but drawing blanks

This wasn't his hotel room, and it wasn't Naruto home, either, having gone out drinking in celebration with the idiot on being announced to be next in line as Hokage after Kakashi, Sasuke was willing to spend one night in Konoha for his best friend before continuing his travels away in hopes of training to master his rinnegan and live alone, the village still holding too many painful memories for him to handle just yet, the wound still too fresh

But drinking sake at the bar was the last thing he remembered, Naruto being a lightweight had called it a night pretty early on, leaving him alone

Bits and pieces came back, of quiet lilacs behind indigo lashes, of soft pale skin dusted with pink, of someone filling the stool next to him with a simple 'hello'

He remembered it so clearly now, all the memories flooding back, from their conversation about their childhoods, fueled by the alcohol they consumed, the liquid courage shedding away any doubts of what was being said until the two stories seemed to merge into one, to the softness of her hand as she guided him to her estate, to the slim of her wrist in his grasp as he reached for her before she left the guest bedroom she had offered, to the surprise in her eyes as he stole a kiss in his drunken state, to how soft her body was against his as she melted into it, to the hesitation of them both, because it was all so NEW, but, it felt so right, they fit like puzzle pieces and neither could believe just how perfect it all was, in that moment, nothing else had mattered

15. If you could choose one of your fics to be filmed, which would you choose? Oh god, most of my fics are horrible and wouldn’t do well as films omg. I guesssss my Climbing Class Until Dawn fic? OKAY so, it’s an IronQrow fic about the animated show by Rooster Teeth RWBY right, and essentially it’s an Uncharted AU that takes place during the fourth game, starting at the prison. Being as it’s basically select characters from RWBY in the place of the Uncharted characters personalities are different and it’s pretty canon divergent and such. 1.How did you get into fandom? What was your catalyst to finding the Tumblr community? I was on break from uni, and I got bored so I downloaded the Tumblr app. At first, I looked at Haikyuu! posts, but then found out that SLBP posts exist... then, ta-da!

3.Which lords route do you like the most, and which one you dislike the most? Why?  I liked Ieyasu's the most. Character development was on point, and the MC was likeable! I guess I liked Mitsuhide's the least, but mainly because there was so much potential and it turned out flat??? It's a shame too, because Mitsuhide's story events are wonderful!

First story you ever wrote: It’s Just (Han)you XD Pun originally >///<  “It’s Just You”” now. Anyway, it was a very basic one shot of the IY gang traveling, getting attacked by a demon and some InuKag fluff at the end. It was so innocent despite what I was reading at the time. LOL. (I’ll Have a Lemonade and its sequel was like the first lemon fic I ever read)

A story on which you have been flamed: I’ve never actually been flamed. “A New Addition” recently got criticized, though. It sent me into a spin for half a day LOL I wanted it not to bother me. But, once I got over it, I think it will help push the fic in the right direction. So, I ended up thanking the reviewer personally for it!

Your favorite story that you have written or are writing: I have three that I’m working on, so they’re all fun in their own way. I guess I have to pick “Broken Paradise.” I think I finally have a good understanding of the characters and it didn’t go straight to smut, so I’m really taking my time and having fun fleshing it out. It’s a self-indulgent road trip fic. I have some one shots in the works, too. Writing for @inukag-4ever for Secret Santa was pretty great!

Favorite story on a fanfiction site: I’m reading quite a few at once. But, I have to go with ones I really enjoyed that got the most reaction out of me that I would re-read: Phony Digits for its wit and humor and InuKag fluff; Freak Attraction and its sequel Seven Man Circus by @artistefish cuz of the characterization, storyline and mostly cuz of the superb writing quality, very descriptive. MY ALL TIME FAV that never got finished: Our Love Affair by Cataluna, but really it’s what inspired me to write. (I’m not a SessKag, but it’s salacious that IY and Kag have like a forbidden love LOL In all seriousness tho I do not condone cheating!)

 Why you became a fanfiction writer: I wanted more and more of Inuyasha waiting week to week for it to air and I was obsessed (still am). I couldn’t get enough. I write what I want to read or don’t get from the fics I read even though we have such talented people in the fandom. I guess I didn’t realize I was sexually attracted to him until I discovered lemons LOL But yeah, the quality writing of the fanfictions and sheer amount of them delighted my 17 year old heart and here I am 31 (3 days away from being 32), finally confident enough to write smut LOL but also understand the characters more and continue to write my own to develop my writing.

 Favorite media to write for (i.e. Pokemon, Naruto, etc.): INUYASHA. He’s a goddamned HERO, flawed, but he just grows so much and makes friends and a life after he thought it was all over. He continues to fight and doesn’t give up! He’s a warrior. He’s my spirit animal.

I had a few Vampire Knight ones, but it had been too long since I’d updated and have no desire to continue despite that it’s one of my top mangas. I’m a ZEKI fan and hoped I would get back to their fics, but haven’t what with all the Inuyasha out there. 

Story you’ve reviewed the most: Whatever I’m reading. I ALWAYS REVIEW cuz I want the author to know and as a writer I know.

 Your most popular story among readers: According to my stats it’s “A New Addition,” which has been running for a decade so that makes sense. LOL. It’s the sequel to “In with the New��� and is about Inukag and Mirsan navigating married life with kids....

 A story on which you have/had writer’s block: I deleted my writers blocks. LOL. Those Vampire Knight fics and one Inuyasha one about their future daughter “transcending time.” Now, I’d have to say it was “A New Addition.” I hadn’t updated for like 6 years and if not for that critique I would be stuck even now…… Trying to keep with those monthly updates, but you can’t help when the muse strikes.

A story you deleted and then resurrected later: None. You shouldn’t bring back the dead. LOL. But, I’ve been thinking of bringing back Transcending Time maybe cuz it had one chapter to go, but I was just unhappy with it overall....

Your biggest qualm when reading fanfiction: Characterization. AUs to me are just putting our beloved characters in different situations, but they’re still themselves. If even I write them OOC then I want to know so I can fix it! Otherwise it may as well just be someone’s original fiction, which would be great in its own right. The other thing is I’m willing to read a “trash” fic if they’re in character enough. But, if Inuyasha says “wench” I’m turned off! I might still power through if I like the author or it was recommended to me. I’m reading fanfiction to fantasize/imagine the Inuyasha characters as I read. It’s nice cuz we all are so familiar with them, so we should be able to enjoy the lemons and plot of a story like just being indulgent cuz we know what/who we are picturing.  I’m reading IY in @richardiancox voice in my head, you know what I mean? LOL.

 Your biggest qualm when writing fanfiction: I doubt myself! Like is this worth someone’s time and sharing it. What if it’s not going anywhere? What if they’re OOC? WHAT IS THE POINT. LIKE WHY. Then trying to describe/write dialogue without repeating Kagome, Inuyasha, Kagome, Inuyasha (like the show it works LOL they scream each others names for 20 minutes) but with a different synonym for said. XD

A story you didn’t expect to get popular: I wasn’t expecting “In With the New” to do as well as it did. Especially re-reading it, GOOD LAWRD it’s like a DIARY of my 20 year old self right down to working in a restaurant and living in a house for students. YUP. Based on MY real life events minus hooking up with my roommate LOL Nope no man like Inuyasha in my life….

 Your favorite author: I just have this feeling it’s gonna be @artistefish, but @gypsin is also amaze. I’m basically gonna read everything they’ve written if I haven’t already. So really though everyone in this fandom really does have talent! I have a long list (thanks to @grapefruitwannabe) of fics I need to read. I’ve found joy in @keizfanfiction. One of her fics actually made me cry, so….
