💜 kaya / jake ;)
💜: who is more likely to say “I love you” first?
/ As much as I want to say the very first person to make the first move is Kaya, I refuse to let it slip because it would be too ooc after a year of having her as my muse and re-reading Syrup Village Arc for the fourth time which leaves the other party to be the answer [ Jake ].
We all know Jake [ seriously if you don’t then go read it ] has suffered both emotional and physically for at least eight years ever since the events of the Project X-7. There is trauma after so much pain, fear, and rejection that has only been healed by two persons, which are Jake’s adoptive parents. They literally opened their arms to welcome him to a life where he could be free and genuinely loved, which was something incredibly meaningful to him at that time until of course, the Marines found him once again and executed them.
I think he would be the first one to say such thing because Kaya did the same thing his parents did even if she does not know about his status as a criminal nor knows about his story. She might have a carefree personality and she might have been betrayed but she still believes in the goodness of people, which is why she lets him in. She expresses how genuinely she cares for him even if it is in a platonic sort of way at first. He is clearly taken off guard by that because he cannot believe she is actually risking her life —again, without her knowing in the beginning —and she is showing him there are people who are willing to accept him as he is. I believe he will turn out to be more protective when he realizes he needs to heal in order to be able to move on, and in an act of vulnerability, he will let those words slip.

As for Kaya’s part, all I can say is that the reasons why she is not the one admitting her feelings first is because of society —and her personality but that is on a LESSER extent because she always pushes her feelings away for the sake of other people’s wellbeing—. She is the second most important person in her hometown, so it is very likely people are always on the watch of her actions, putting her in a vulnerable place where even if she wanted to act upon her feelings, she just could not in fear of what people might think —that without counting the cliché of two people being from opposite classes, leading to a secret / forbidden / scandalous / and all the adjectives fitting for this situation romance where love wins at the end—.
