we are all fools in love(a theonsa/gendrya jane austen au)
The Starks of Winterfell Hall tend to keep to themselves, but when Sir Eddard's oldest friend, Lord Robert Baratheon, invites the family to Storm's End for the summer the Stark patriarch feels an obligation -- rather than an enticement -- to go. With eldest son, Robb, staying with friends in town, Sir Eddard, his wife Lady Catelyn, and their four younger children head south. Upon arriving, they are introduced to Storm's End's mistress, the severe Cersei, and her son, the charming Joffrey.
Miss Sansa Stark is a romantic at heart and always has been. She's dreamt of her wedding for as long as she can remember and is determined to marry for love, not station. With a fortune of twenty thousand pounds, she's sure to have her pick of suitors. Soon, she finds herself enamoured with the handsome son of her father's friend. Joffrey dotes on her and seems to have eyes for no other and it's not long before the entire neighbourhood is talking about them. The announcement of their engagement is expected by summer's end. Meanwhile, Sansa's younger sister, Arya, is having a much less satisfying visit. Arya has never cared for drawing or playing the pianoforte. The passtimes of proper young ladies have never appealed to her and her mother has warned her time and again that she's always just one step away from scandal. All she wants is to make it through the summer and get back to Winterfell where she belongs. Her only solace is her horse, Nymeria, whom she insisted be brought south with them. Her daily rides throw her into the company of the Baratheons' groom, Gendry, every afternoon and it's not long before Arya begins to develop feelings her family would never approve of. The Starks are quickly introduced to all the families in the neighbourhood, including the elegant Tyrells of Highgarden Park. Miss Stark soon forms a particular friendship with Miss Margaery Tyrell who invites her to accompany the Tyrells to Bath for the last two weeks of the summer. Loathe though she is to leave Joffrey, her father's general distaste for company has lead to a lack of society and experiences that most young ladies take for granted and Sansa can't bring herself to pass on the opportunity. Besides which, Joffrey has hinted at his own designs to visit the town before their stay is out and Sansa is hopeful that his presence will bring with it a proposal. In Bath they run into Sansa's brother, Robb, their cousin, Jon, and Robb's longtime friend, Theon Greyjoy. Theon's father is a gentleman, but only just. He made his fortune at sea and used it to buy a small estate just west of Winterfell Hall called Pyke Manor. Theon's two older brothers had been navy men as well and had both died at sea, leaving Theon his father's only remaining son and heir. Sansa has known him nearly all her life and considers him a friend but, as rumours of her potential engagement begin to circulate around Bath, she notices a change in his demeanour. He stops engaging her for dances, barely speaks to her at all, and when he does reverts to cold formalities. Sansa can't understand his behaviour but what she understands less is how much it bothers her. When Joffrey arrives in Bath he's more attentive than ever, going above and beyond in his courtship of Sansa and, the evening before their last day in Bath, he leaves her with the promise of calling on her in the morning for a private conversation. Before Joffrey, though, a letter from Arya arrives. She details the scandal that has befallen Storm's End at the revelation that Lady Cersei had been unfaithful to her husband and that Joffrey is the illegitimate product of adultury. Realizing that Joffrey's attentions have been nothing more than an attempt to secure her fortune for himself, Sansa vows to turn down any proposal he might make to her. But there's more to Arya's letter. She's left Storm's End, claiming to their parents that the tension in the house makes her uncomfortable. To Sansa, though, she tells the truth. She's running away to Gretna Green with the Baratheons' groom, Gendry. Sansa doesn't want to get in the way of her sister's happiness but this will bring scandal down upon the entire family and she knows it must be stopped. She goes looking for Robb but it's Theon she finds and it's Theon who informs her of the latest piece of gossip being whispered about at the Pump Room. Lord Robert, it seems, is not without an heir after all. Lady Cersei was not the only one to disregard her wedding vows and, though Joffrey may not be Lord Robert's son, apparently Gendry is. His mother had been a maid at Storm's End and Lord Robert had taken a liking to her. Unable to properly acknowledge his illegitimate son, Lord Robert had seen to it that the boy be given a job on the estate once he was old enough. Now, though, with little chance of ever having another son, Lord Robert has decided to dispense with propriety and name Gendry his heir. Sansa informs Theon of Arya's letter and he agrees to set off after them immediately. With the promise of Gendry's new station there's no more reason for them to fear Sir Eddard's disapproval and if Theon can just find them and inform them of all that's passed before they can follow through on their elopement, no one need ever know that they ran away in the first place. As Sansa watches Theon ride off to save her family's honour, she can't help but think over what her feelings for him have been and realizes that, perhaps, the romance she's been longing for has been right in front of her all along.
